Let’s break this down.

Vic is absolutely guilty of inappropriate behavior, misconduct, sexual harassment, and possibly (just possibly) sexual assault towards others. This has been established by his pattern of behavior for years. Monica and the others are being entirely honest in their stories and the allegations are very likely honest as well. How this is even in question, I have no idea, but it upsets and disturbs me that there are so many who are quick to jump to Vic’s defense while simultaneously vilifying his opponents and accusers (and possibly victims).

A, He hasn’t been proven guilty of exual harassment OR assault and inapporiate behavior means nothing.

And B. yeah, no. Monica has been lying via omission for months now, refusing to give ANY details on any incidents DESPITE the fact that those details are REQUIRED to convict him. And before you say she’s scared: she’s openly threatened vic supporters with legal action. Over asking her for info. That is not the behavior of an innocent person.

Oh and C. NOTHING came to light about Vic for MONTHS. The ProJared shit started and ended in the same month.

What gives credibility to the side of Monica Rial, Jamie Marchi, Jamie McGonnigal, Marzgurl, etc. is that not only do their words and allegations line up with accounts of Vic’s skeevy behavior towards fans and women that have been going around the internet for YEARS (It’s honestly astonishing just how far back some of this goes), but how many other VAs, people actually in the industry who might’ve worked alongside Vic and would be there to witness his actions, have come out in Vic’s defense? Can’t really think of much. Meanwhile, how many have been coming out in support of the alleged victims? Quite a handful, even J. Michael Tatum, himself a victim of sexual assault in the past. Apparently, Vic being a primadona and a skeevy womanizing creeper has been an open secret in the VA industry since forever.

And of these guys:

Monica has evaded legal action and refused to give details NECESSARY to convict him

Marzgurl has sactively ENOCURAGE VIOLENCE

And Jamie has been proven to bully people into dropping Vic from cons.

As for the ‘accounts”: they’re eitehr anonyomous accounts, too old to prove...or taken out of context of the people involed.

And by the way. how many famous people probably came out and said ‘that guy’s a commie’ back during the Red Scare? People coming out to help doesn’t MEAN anything without proof. People in the wrong can still come out in droves. And if that doesn’t convince: does that mean rape victims who don’t have public support while their rapists DO are the ones in the wrong then? Same logic of ‘One party has more public support than the other, therefore they’re right.’

What’s damning on Vic’s side of things? Well not only was a thorough investigation into the sexual harassment allegations conducted during the time of the Broly movie’s production prior to Funimation’s decision to lay Vic off (something his fans don’t even seem to realize happened) -

You mean the one where they didn’t give any info and was probably a ‘cut off the controversial figure for profit’ decision?

- but Vic’s response to the whole situation has…just not been how I think an absolutely innocent man getting his career and livelihood threatened by accusation of things he absolutely never did and would never do would respond. Vic’s been pretty sincere and professional throughout this and I give him props for that, but his “defenses” against the allegations have always been along the lines of “I remember things differently” or “I didn’t realize she felt that way - I thought that thing we had was consensual and mutual.” Of course he’s not going to recall those incidents as being ones where he committed sex offenses because he did not see his actions as being such when he committed them. He fails to recognize how and why his behavior is so wrong. He doesn’t knowingly think of himself as a sex fiend and harasser when he acts that way - he really thinks he’s being nice (backed up by the allegation where he repeatedly asked his victim to “let me be sweet to you.”). But those moments were not consensual. The girls and women he touched or romanced were not comfortable with it.-

And Monica has threatened legal action and Marzgurl thretaened PHYSICAL VIOLENCE.

You wanna judge this based on public reaction? Show me where Vic threatens anyone who questions him.

What his intentions were at the time don’t matter when put next against how his victims internalized his actions and how they were made to feel -

No, intentions DO matter. That’s why ‘self defense’ and ‘murder’ are different concepts.

And on top of that, look at how Monica Rial worded her own account:

This, by contrast, is Vic’s wording of his side of things. He “got lazy.” He’s “a work in progress like everyone else.” And my personal favorite: “Voice actors are no different from you: we’re bozos. We’re all dumb humans just trying to do our best.” The emotions are sincere, but the words are unrefined and a bit try-hard in trying to paint a sympathetic image of himself.

And Monica, by your own standards, is trying to appeal to basic human empathy to trick people into believing her. Thing is, Vic is consistent in his actions. Monica has acted contradictory MANY times.

And what’s damning on the side of Vic’s fans and defenders? Well, I could not help but notice that they can be found all over Youtube, hive of the Far Right that it’s become-

I also could not help but notice that whenever I clicked a video made for supporting Vic and tearing down his opposition and accusers (who, again, could very well be his victims), it was literally ALWAYS a dude speaking.

Strike 2.

It was always some man speaking in defense of this other man who he probably doesn’t even personally know in a situation he wasn’t there to experience and knows next to shit about, and demonizing “waamen” that he also doesn’t personally know. And in all of this, I have not once seen any valid reasoning for why Vic absolutely must be innocent of the allegations made against him other than “he’s a super popular, charming, beloved VA” and “he seems like such a nice guy”. It’s frankly quite terrifying that the immediate default for these people is to stand with the popular, prolific, powerful man (and I don’t want to be an SJW here, but that Vic is handsome, white, straight/cis, and Christian might be a huge part of it

Strike 3-

Not only is this gonna EMBOLDEN the assholes on Vic’s side-

But Monica’s defenders (like YOU) have focused on gender and bullshit instead of anything FACTUAL. You act like anyone whose accused of sexual assault is IMMEDIATELY guilty if the accuser is a woman and teh accused is a man. Never mind how most of these accusations come down to simple miscommunication between the parties and nevermind how if a guy tries coming to the police about being raped, it’s likely HE’LL be arrested. Let alone what happens if the woman gets pregnant and can sue for child support...even if she committed STATUTORY RAPE.

Oh, and Vic’s italian and that culture is very touchy feely. So guess what? You’re racist by your own logic.

and denounce the women who come forward to accuse him as being liars because this is exactly why women who are victimized by men of such power and popularity tend to NOT come forward with stories of their victimization immediately after it happens. Yes, anyone is innocent until proven guilty in a court of law, but that doesn’t mean the accusers should be denounced as liars and demonized for daring to mess with the man - they ought to be shown support and respect IF in the case what they say is true and they really were hurt by that man. If they’re proven liars beyond any doubt, THEN they can be given well deserved scorn. But brushing them off beforehand is Not OK. Especially if it’s with conspiracy theories about how this is some big coordinated feminist effort to tear down a great man and destroy his livelihood, or it’s a retaliation from yaoi fangirls who hate that Vic dares to be anti-yaoi and Conservative in regards to gay people.

And yet you condemn Vic before he is proven to be lying.

Sorry, either condemn yourself or be better.

These assclowns have also constantly resorted to the defense of “Oh, hugging other people and kissing them in places not on the lips totes isn’t sexual harassment”. Totally ignoring the little details of the girls getting the hugs typically being total strangers to Vic outside of being fans of his work who are thus underage girls being touched by a grown man who has absolutely no relation to them, that he might have done the same with female co-workers behind the scenes, and that he has done these things on a whim, without the recipient’s consent and without paying any mind to how it might make them feel.

Also ignoring if they give consent like that time someone tried portraying Vic touching a supposedly underage girl only to BACKFIRE as the womana spoke out in defense of the man.

This has been a consistent pattern of behavior with him,

and allegedly, he’s justified it with saying “silence gives consent.” Like a girl or woman absolutely has to verbally say “no” or tell him outright that he’s making them feel uncomfortable for it to be considered wrong and unwarranted. Basically “a lack of a No makes it a Yes.” I can’t begin to describe how gross that is.

So Vic has to be a fucking MINDREADER or else.

Great to know, especially considering how my own condition would make this shit damn near impossible to see.

The worst part is how these IStandWithVic cultists demonize Monica Rial. A woman who, by her own admission, was a victim of rape as a teenager.

How does it account for the fans and congoers who have been sharing their stories of uncomfortable experiences and encounters they’ve had with Vic FOR YEARS?

‘Stories’ are not truth.

The deck is NOT stacked in Vic’s favor here, so “he’s successful, popular, funny, friendly, charming, talented and a classic VA who’s so well loved in the anime community” is NOT going to cut it as an assumption of his innocence or a defense for his character.

No, that’s the legal system that says ‘innocent until proven guilty.’

He needs to be held accountable for his misdemeanors against people who gave no consent to being touched, hugged, kissed, stalked, romanced, or squicked out by him.

And yet Monica threatening legal action and Marzgurl making THREATS OF VIOLENCE? A-Ok.

It’s a Michael Jackson type of situation - even if he’s NOT done the things he’s being accused of, that does NOT make his creepy behavior towards underage fangirls excusable or alright.

VI. The Lovers - have your character’s heart and mind ever been at odds with one another?

X-men verse: Yes, a few times. When he first started getting his mutation and really struggling to come to terms with it, he was really confused as to what he should do. It took him a month or two to decide, and ultimately his head chose to leave to spare his family from any problems his mutations would cause even though his heart told him to stay and have their support.

Also with Rhys, there was a lot of his heart telling him something his mind hadnt quite realized yet. It was a very subconscious thing because he knew he loved him, but never thought about in what way. It was obvious to everyone else, he absolutely adored him, loved his smile, his voice, everything about him and spent time always thinking of him. The problem was, it didnt click in his mind right away that all of those feelings were much more than friendship. All he knew, was that being with Rhys made his soul happy. When he did finally realize, everything just seemed to make sense but due to the whole drunken night incident a whole new struggle arose. He didnt think Rhys would feel the same way so that made his head clash with his heart a lot. All of it was a misunderstanding of course

In Mainverse: Phew, Im only going to list one time and make it brief or else we’ll be on this one question forever. When crossing the Helcaraxe, it was nothing but a mind and heart battle. He was constantly aching for comfort but hating everyone for hurting him so badly, but somewhere in his mind he knew he didnt hate them, he loved them and thats why it hurt so bad. It took the whole elven 30 years in the Helcaraxe to finally cope and his mind and heart match as much as it could.

VIII. Strength - is there a moment your character has ever had to fight for something or someone?

X-Men Au: In his usual X-men verse he hasnt had to do anything extremely drastic, but he does defend the people he cares about from judgemental people on several occasions. It sounds awfully tame but I think eventually when on his own and living with Rhys, both of them having jobs, having a happy life. He feels like they did a lot of work to get there too. Finrod helped Rhys through a lot of hard times, and they overcame past demons to live happy and together. Sometimes those demons do resurface but they fight back against that.

He does have a verse where he and a friend were captured, and he protected them from Hydra, and for the sake of not writing a lot of gore, in short theres a lot of biting and fighting. He gets muzzled, his hair cut, tested on, but eventually he gets his friend and they get out but the friend doesnt make it far, the friend supposedly drowns in the river. Key word being supposedly. XD

MainVerse: Yes. There is a lot of war throughout his lifetime that he fights in and a lot of emotional turmoil. He had to fight to be with Maglor the moment they first fell in love. Feanor forbid them to be see each other, Maglor had to marry someone else, etc. That was the least of his problems though, when they all were fleeing Valinor he had to fight to try and keep his cousins/friends from killing each other ( which they did) at the first kinslaying. He also had to fight and struggle to keep his family alive in the Helcaraxe. Then there was just so much fighting in Middle Earth. The only time there wasnt, was in the time of great peace when Morgoth was quiet, and Finrod was free to run his kingdom happily and be with his family and lover, still in secret, but he’d take it. After all that crap, keeping their romance secret wasnt as big of a deal anymore. Thats not to say it didnt bother him sometimes, but there were worse problems.

XVIII. The Moon - what is the most significant secret your character has discovered?

X-men AU: Aside from finding out what happened to Rhys, there isnt much else significant. His life in this au is relatively calm compared to all other aus. Unless you count teenage talk, and secrets swapped between friends. Theres tons of those but none of those are massive secrets.

MainVerse: Probably when Ulmo came to him and gave him a hint of what was to come and what he needed to do to prepare. Any secret from a Vala is hella significant. Similarly, the most significant secret he ever kept himself, is that he was shagging his half-cousin for centuries and they in fact were kinda secretly married twice XD Also, any events of his foresight telling him something can also count.

★ Seven of Pentacles - what tests your character’s patience more than anything?

Prejudice.The only smidge of patience he has for it, is giving them a chance to educate themselves on the matter and be a better person. He’ll even offer to educate them. If they keep squandering that chance then he has no patience for them. You can lead a horse to water but cant make them drink, if hes gatta just forget them and protect innocent people from them then oh well. He tried. Hes not gonna tolerate someone whos ignorant biased hateful views hurt people.

ー☆* Two of Wands - has your character ever had to make a tough decision between two choices?

X-men AU: This goes along with the first question. Most of his tough decisions were due to his mind and heart saying two different things. When his mutation started surfacing, not only did he feel like he had to choose between leaving and staying, he felt the need to either keep in touch or break up with his boyfriend. Those were two very very hard decisions. Of course he had only just turned 16, he was such a young boy and in his mind at the time those were his only choices. He got so afraid that his family would suffer if someone judged him, he wanted them happy. The same with his boyfriend, they had both planned to go to go through highschool together then attend a college of the arts to study music. They had such big dreams that he suddenly didnt think he could do anymore. The thought of trying and failing, then hindering his boyfriend from achieving his dreams was too much, he couldnt find it in himself to risk everyones happiness, and/or safety. Heaven forbid him being a mutant were to effect his parents jobs! Or people pick on his little siblings at their schools. He thought of everything bad that could happen, and in that already stressed/very frightened state he decided to leave. Of course Charles Xavier found him and told him about the institute, and this whole thing was mended but it was devastating at the time.

MainVerse: Whether or not to leave Valinor was a choice that changed his entire life, and set his entire future in motion down the path of doom. It sounds really dramatic and it was. ;-;. When all the Noldor decided to leave when the trees were killed his mother wouldn’t go with them, and he couldnt bear to leave her but he felt the need to go and protect his father and siblings too. So he told her he would take care of them for her. At that time there was no doom of Mandos, and there could have been a way back to see her at some point and time. It wasnt too unreasonable to think seeing as the Valar said they could go, and they hadnt committed any crimes yet.

After the kinslaying he had a choice to turn back with his father and his people, to be forgiven and have the curse of doom lifted off him but he couldnt leave his siblings, cousins, and lover. He had to choose to stay with them, and thus making the decision to never see his parents again until he died. In a way he had no choice, he couldnt let his siblings, cousins, and lover go to middle earth, where the dark lords were, alone. Theres no way he could so in that aspect it was an easy choice, but hard and heartwrenching all the same. Another tough choice was to travel through the Helcaraxe but that wasnt his sole decision, its more complicated so I wont mention that one.

◥█̆̈◤ Four of Cups - how indecisive is your character?

Finrod is pretty decisive, the only decisions that are difficult for him are the ones where his heart and mind clash like the other questions asked about. He has such a big heart, he always tries to consider everyone and do whats best but sometimes the situation calls for a lot of thinking rather than acting on emotion. Something that important takes a lot of thought.

━━╋⊂ Three of Swords - what was the worst betrayal of trust your character has ever experienced?

X-men au: I think going back to the tough decision question about his mutation beginning to surface. At the time when that happened, he felt very betrayed by his own body. Everything just started tumbling to pieces in front of him. His body kept changing and his teeth were growing so his mouth was incredibly sore around his canines not to mention accidentally biting himself a lot. His ears, and sense of smell, and taste were malfunctioning from the change so noises that didnt normally bother him hurt sometimes to the point of bleeding ears, things that normally tasted good suddenly tasted bad, he kept smelling things he didnt want to smell. Not to mention his voice started doing really weird things and he suddenly got abnormally strong. Not only was all this suddenly happening to him, his fear of what would happen to everyone else just made him feel betrayed by the world for not accepting him and forcing him between a rock and a hard place. Of course later, things did work out and he realized there were a lot of people who supported mutants too, and that he just had to see it. The longer he had his mutation he felt like it was who he was meant to be, now he wouldnt know what to do without it. Just being so young and everything happening so suddenly did make him feel betrayed for several months.

Mainverse: Hm, well theres several betrayals that he went through although things like the kinslaying wasnt directly to solely him so I wont elaborate on those. I would say its a pretty good tie between his uncle Feanor refusing to let Makalaure/Maglor be with him and basically forcing Mags to marry someone else specifically to keep them from ever being married was a pretty bad betrayal at the time. Feanor had always been rough around the edges, but Finrod had never expected that extent of a betrayal.

The biggest betrayal of his entire lifetime I would say is what Curufin and Celegorm did in Nargothrond. Finrod had been one of the best kings in history, he was sweet, compassionate, loyal, trust worthy, he cared about everyone not just his own subjects. His kingdom thrived and was so happy, he kept it hidden from evil all that time. There was such an immense level of respect between him and his subjects, and Curufin and Celegorm specifically visited Nargothrond to try and undermine that respect and trust. They widdled away at it and planted all kinds of seeds of doubt to the point when Finrod decided to go with Beren to retrieve a silmaril, it was absolute mutiny. Everyone in the entire kingdom turned on him because of what Curufin and Celegorm had done and said to them, only a single handful of people remained loyal to him. A single handful, thats it, out of that entire massive kingdom. Finrod simply took off his crown and tossed it on the floor bc thats all he could do, it was such a betrayal there was nothing else he could have done. Finrod went into Angband with only part of that handful of people because no one else would follow him. They all died except for Beren who Finrod died protecting. Luckily his nephew Orodreth got the crown and not Curufin and Celegorm, but much good that did..Not long after Nargothrond fell and Orodreth and his daughter was killed, and most of Nargothronds people were either killed or enslaved. So.. yea. Massive Betrayal. Hugee. Lead to the entire kingdom and its people being dead.

Adamandriel Oneshot (because I’m trash) THERE IS CURSING BECAUSE IM TIRED AND THATS WHAT HAPPENS

"Come on, Adam! I just want my ship to sail," whined the 18 year old. His name was Corey Larken. With his messy brown hair and chocolate eyes, he could be what you'd call, a human puppy.

"It's not going to happen," his roomate, Adam Milligan, shot back. His short blond hair and blue eyes made him a guy anyone could have a crush on, which was good seeing as how he was bisexual.

Currently, the two boys were seated on the couch of their college dorm. Adam was playing Call of Duty and Corey was bugging him about his ship.

"Why not?" Corey pouted. Adam sighed, but didn't take his eyes off the screen.

"I've never even met this person," he responded with a huff of laughter, "and you just met them a few days ago. I don't even know their name!"

"First off, it's a guy," Corey said, "and second, his name is Samandriel Novak and he's a damn puppy."

"Co, you're a puppy," Adam pointed out.

"Okay, maybe, but Samandriel is the ultimate puppy," he said. "He's so cute!"

"Then you date him," the blond deadpanned. Corey blinked at him, then started laughing.

"Bush, you know I don't date," he grinned. Adam finished his game and turned off the television.

"Why do you say bush? Just say bitch like the rest of us." Adam put the controller down and faced his friend. "And, if I go, will you leave me alone about this whole 'ship' thing? Why do you even ship us? How do you know we'd get along?"

"For your first question, it's because I'm unique. For your second question, you're hot, he's adorable. It's the perfect combination," Corey answered happily. "Now come on, we're meeting him in the park in 15 minutes!"

To say Adam didn't want to be here was an understatement. He'd rather be at home kicking the butts of salty 12 year olds in video games. Instead, he was sitting in the park with a hyperactive puppy human waiting for another, supposedly, puppy human who might be just as hyperactive.

"Look man, I don't care what you say, vanilla will always rule over the other flavors," Corey said. The two boys were talking about ice cream flavors while waiting for Samandriel.

"But it's so bland," Adam argued.

"The only thing that's bland is your social life," Corey shot back with a smirk. Adam put a hand to his chest, acting offended. He opened his mouth to respond with a retort but was interrupted.

"Hello," a soft voice said, causing the two boys to look up. The person they saw had light brown hair and blue eyes.

"Samandriel! Hi," Corey shot up, grinning widely and gave the smaller student a hug. Adam had a double take.

"This is Samandriel?" He asked in disbelief. "I know you said he was 'the ultimate puppy', but this is crazy!" He stood up and walked around the boy.

Samandriel tilted his head and watched as Adam walked in circles around him. Corey had to cover his mouth with his hand to stifle his laughs.

"Oh, I'm Adam by the way," he introduced and Samandriel nodded.

"Nice to meet you," he gave a small smile and Corey hugged him tight.

"Alfie, you are too precious for the world," Corey stated.

"Thank you?" Samandriel furrowed his eyebrows confused and Adam laughed.

"Hey, Co?" Adam asked. Corey looked at him. "Where'd you get the nickname Alfie?"

"Oh! Well, he works in the cafe on campus and they got his name tag mixed up, but he's too shy to tell them," he answered. Samandriel blushed and looked at the ground.

"I just don't want to cause trouble," he defended himself. Corey laughed and Adam gave the shy boy a light smile.

He’s cute. Adam thought, smiling.

It's been a few weeks since the two have met, and since then they've constantly been hangin out. Along with Corey of course. He, and Adam quotes, "would rather die than miss the possibility of my ship being cute together." So here they were, sitting in Barnes & Noble with drinks, arguing about the best author.

"Oh, come on, Corey! At least you learn things from Riordan's books! What do you learn from Erin Hunter?" Adam crossed his arms and frowned at his friend.

"Cats are superior and they're religion actually fucking exists," the brown-haired male answered. Adam gasped and covered Samandriel's ears.

"Child ears over here! Be considerate," he teased. Samandriel whined and tried to move away from Adam.

"I'm not a child! Stop it," he complained. The older boy laughed and removed his hands.

"Okay, okay. Sorry, Alfie," Adam smiled at him and Samandriel just pouted.

A camera shutter was heard and the two boys looked at Corey.

"Shit! I thought my ringer was off," he sighed but quickly smiled again, "you guys are adorable!"

They both blushed and glanced at each other. Corey, of course, took another picture.

"C, stop," Alfie whined. He laughed and put his phone away.

"Fine, fine," he agreed with a grin.

Adam shook his head in exasperation and sipped his coffee.

About three months have passed and Corey is still impatiently waiting for his friends to just get together. Only now, he's started interfering.

From making them work together on projects (he befriended as many professors as possible just to make this happen) to literally pushing them into each other, Corey has tried it all. It was clear to everyone but them that they liked each other, and Corey was at his breaking point.

"Oblivious little shits," he muttered under his breath.

He was sitting at the park with the two causes of his problems and was texting another one of his friends, Marie, asking for advice. She shipped them as much as Corey did, if not then more.

Marie 🙃: Just straight up tell them

Corey 🐶: Shouldn't they try to figure it out on their own??

Marie 🙃: It's been 3 months man!

Corey 🐶: Yeah...

"Watcha doing?" Adam looked over his shoulder curiously.

"Getting advice from Marie," Corey responded.

"On what?" Adam asked, confused.

Corey hesitated for a moment, but remembered what Marie told him. His phone vibrated and he looked down at it.

Marie 🙃: Bitch if you don't do it then I will XD

Corey smiled and shook his head.

"On you two shit heads," he finally answered.

"What do you mean?" Adam asked. He looked over at Samandriel who was sitting on a swing and scrolling through his phone.

"She was right," Corey sighed. "You both clearly like each other. Ask him out already!"

Adam froze.

"Fuck. Is it that obvious?" He looked at Corey hopelessly. Needless to say, Corey wanted to punch something.

"Yes!" He shouted, drawing a confused look from Samandriel.

He waved at the boy who waved back and went back to absentmindedly swinging.

"Seriously, Adam, just ask him out. I bet you a month's worth of pizza he'll say yes," he said. Adam looked at Samandriel.

"Fine, I'll do it before he leaves," Adam decided.

"Better than nothing," Corey reluctantly agreed, much rather having him ask now.

About an hour later was when it happened. Corey and Adam worked together to plan the date and Samandriel had fun in the playground and chatted with the occasional kid that came up to him (mostly wanting to know if he'd play hide and seek with them. Why? Samandriel doesn't know, but he has fun).

Samandriel headed over to the chatting boys. "I've got to go back to my dorm, I still have a little bit of homework to finish up," he announced.

Adam looked at Corey, who just smirked at him. Samandriel looked at them confused.

"What is it?" he asked.

"Adam here has something he needs to ask you, and I'm just gonna go over there," Corey said as he stood up and walked to a tree not to far away, taking out his phone.

Quickly, he switched to the camera app and started recording. He was zoomed in on the two boys, luckily still within earshot.

Adam was now standing, and blushing, while Samandriel was still very confused.

"Adam? Are you okay?" he asked worriedly.

"Uh, yeah. I'm fine. Um," he stumbled over his words and blushed brighter.

"Okay, so what did you need to ask?" Samandriel tilted his head.

Adam hesitated and looked over at Corey who gave him an enthusiastic thumbs up.

"Well, I wanted to ask if," he sighed and ran his hands through his hair. "Oh, fuck it."

He grabbed the smaller boy by his shirt and kissed him. Samandriel completely froze. After a second though, he melted into the kiss.

Corey was biting his fist trying not to scream. He struggled to hold his phone steadily in order to capture this whole thing.

After a few seconds, the two boys pulled apart, both blushing hard.

"So," Adam started with a small smile, "would you like to go on a date with me?"

"Of course," Samandriel smiled up at him shyly.

Adam gave him another quick kiss, then Samandriel started heading back to his dorm.

Meanwhile, poor Corey was practically dying. He sent the video to Marie and ran up to Adam to give him a tight hug.

"You did it," he smiled at his friend. Adam nodded, smiling widely.

He looked at his phone to check Marie's reaction, and she did not disappoint.

woke up burning with anger. im supposed to sleep for another 2 hours to get a full 8 hours of rest but fuck it i cant. im so upset. my family has never protected me a day in my life. for years my mother has abused me. and still till this day refuses to do what’s necessary to love me properly. im not priority and have never been. i fled dallas two years ago because i could not stand being home anymore. i felt outcasted and miserable. my dad called me a bitch and my mom didnt even ask me how it made me feel. i told her she NEVER has asked how anything makes me feel. she tried to keep what my dad said from my uncles. she said it was to protect them cause theyd do anything for me, but really shes been protecting my dad all this time. my dad beat the shit out of me when i was about 3 years old. i have a pretty good memory of my early years, but i guess the event was so traumatic that i cant remember it. she said she came home one day and i was screaming with bruises all over my back. she took pictures and showed a few women in my family (supposedly), but kept it hidden from the men. no police report was filed and she eventually got back together with my dad and had two more children with him. a few months ago i asked her if she was ever in love with my father and she said hell no. she refused to protect me from a man she didnt even love. i just don’t understand how she could allow that to happen to me and blocked my dad from suffering any consequences. hes never hit her like that. my sisters have never gone through anything like that. just me.

im in so much pain. my uncle called me yesterday for the first time in years threatening to beat me if i ever “disrespect” my grandmother again. its crazy how disrespected Black people feel when you dont allow them to control you. in reality i was just defending a random black girl that my sister took a picture of trying to crack jokes about her in the family groupchat. my sister and my uncle’s antiblack ass were going back and forth picking the poor girl apart talking about her hair. the stranger was darkskin too so that shit was sooooo out of line. my grandma and my mom were engaging with the behavior too. i wasnt even going to say anything, but i cant let that shit slide. that was colorism in the flesh thriving. as a light skin girl, id be a terrible person to not say anything. so i did... i wasnt being aggressive but firm in how wrong it was. its not okay to take pics of anybody without their consent and black women especially darkskin black women are scrutinized for minding their own damn business. my sister said she “forgot i couldnt take a joke” just immediately gaslighting me off the bat. my uncle joining in. and my mom and grandma immediately wanting the conversation to be shut down. typing in all caps threatening me to shut up. but i didnt because i wasnt done yet. my sister was still throwing shots too so i let her know that if shes set on disrespecting people we’ll have beef for life. and my granny felt sooooooo disrespected; texting me individually and everything. my uncle calling me back to back. i was still at work too. the whole thing was annoying as fuck. so yeah, he called me on some bullshit over it. threatening to get violent saying he doesnt give a fuck what i believe.

its crazy because for years... my entire life actually, my sister has been disrespectful and nobody has ever checked her on it. ever. the only time anybody says anything is when i say something. they’re so hyper focused on controlling and restraining me that her behavior has never been acknowledged. they just expect me to take it. to not “sink to her level” but FUCK THAT. im tired of being the bigger person. being the bigger person never granted me more respect ever. im gonna do what i have to to be treated the way i demand and anybody who gets in the way of that is bound to be powerless. i had my first therapy session yesterday and she told me i may have to let go of some people. im so tired and im hurting so bad i know its true. im feeling like ive never had parents and no one actually loves me. my grandma does but shes never protected me. if anything shes been an enabler. and if not letting her silence me anymore means im going to be getting threats from grown ass men then i dont even want to talk to her anymore either. im feeling very alone and isolated right now. im in so much pain i cant cry hard enough. no one understands me everyone is against me.

It’s likely only one of many places where such huge sets of personal data collected during a period of permissive Facebook access terms have been obtainable.

The data were collected as part of a personality test, myPersonality, which, according to its own wiki (now taken down), was operational from 2007 to 2012, but new data was added as late as August of 2016. It started as a side project by the Cambridge Psychometrics Centre’s David Stillwell (now deputy director there), but graduated to a more organized research effort later. The project “has close academic links,” the site explains, “however, it is a standalone business.” (Presumably for liability purposes; the group never charged for access to the data.)

Though “Cambridge” is in the name, there’s no real connection to Cambridge Analytica, just a very tenuous one through Aleksandr Kogan, which is explained below.

Like other quiz apps, it requested consent to access the user’s profile (friends’ data was not collected), which combined with responses to questionnaires produced a rich data set with entries for millions of users. Data collected included demographics, status updates, some profile pictures, likes and lots more, but not private messages or data from friends.

Exactly how many users are affected is a bit difficult to say: the wiki claims the database holds 6 million test results from 4 million profiles (hence the headline), though only 3.1 million sets of personality scores are in the set and far less data points are available on certain metrics, such as employer or school. At any rate, the total number is on that order, though the same data is not available for every user.

Although the data is stripped of identifying information, such as the user’s actual name, the volume and breadth of it makes the set susceptible to de-anonymization, for lack of a better term. (I should add there is no evidence that this has actually occurred; simple anonymizing processes on rich data sets are just fundamentally more vulnerable to this kind of reassembly effort.)

This data set was available via a wiki to credentialed academics who had to agree to the team’s own terms of service. It was used by hundreds of researchers from dozens of institutions and companies for numerous papers and projects, including some from Google, Microsoft, Yahoo and even Facebook itself. (I asked the latter about this curious occurrence, and a representative told me that two researchers listed signed up for the data before working there; it’s unclear why in that case the name I saw would list Facebook as their affiliation, but there you have it.)

This in itself is in violation of Facebook’s terms of service, which ostensibly prohibited the distribution of such data to third parties. As we’ve seen over the last year or so, however, it appears to have exerted almost no effort at all in enforcing this policy, as hundreds (potentially thousands) of apps were plainly and seemingly proudly violating the terms by sharing data sets gleaned from Facebook users.

In the case of myPersonality, the data was supposed to be distributed only to actual researchers; Stillwell and his collaborator at the time, Michal Kosinski, personally vetted applications, which had to list the data they needed and why, as this sample application shows:

One lecturer, however, published their credentials on GitHub in order to allow their students to use the data. Those credentials were available to anyone searching for access to the myPersonality database for, as New Scientist estimates, about four years.

This seems to demonstrate the laxity with which Facebook was policing the data it supposedly guarded. Once that data left company premises, there was no way for the company to control it in the first place, but the fact that a set of millions of entries was being sent to any academic who asked, and anyone who had a publicly listed username and password, suggests it wasn’t even trying.

A Facebook researcher actually requested the data in violation of his own company’s policies. I’m not sure what to conclude from that, other than that the company was utterly uninterested in securing sets like this and far more concerned with providing against any future liability. After all, if the app was in violation, Facebook can simply suspend it — as the company did last month, by the way — and lay the whole burden on the violator.

“We suspended the myPersonality app almost a month ago because we believe that it may have violated Facebook’s policies,” said Facebook’s VP of product partnerships, Ime Archibong, in a statement. “We are currently investigating the app, and if myPersonality refuses to cooperate or fails our audit, we will ban it.”

In a statement provided to TechCrunch, David Stillwell defended the myPersonality project’s data collection and distribution.

“myPersonality collaborators have published more than 100 social science research papers on important topics that advance our understanding of the growing use and impact of social networks,” he said. “We believe that academic research benefits from properly controlled sharing of anonymised data among the research community.”

In a separate email, Michal Kosinski also emphasized the importance of the published research based on their data set. Here’s a recent example looking into how people assess their own personalities versus how those who know them do, and how a computer trained to do so performs.

“Facebook has been aware of and has encouraged our research since at least 2011,” the statement continued. It’s hard to square this with Facebook’s allegation that the project was suspended for policy violations based on the language of its redistribution terms, which is how a company spokesperson explained it to me. The likely explanation is that Facebook never looked closely until this type of profile data sharing became unpopular, and usage and distribution among academics came under closer scrutiny.

Stillwell said (and the Centre has specifically explained) that Aleksandr Kogan was not in fact associated with the project; he was, however, one of the collaborators who received access to the data like those at other institutions. He apparently certified that he did not use this data in his SCL and Cambridge Analytica dealings.

The statement also says that the newest data is six years old, which seems substantially accurate from what I can tell except, for a set of nearly 800,000 users’ data regarding the 2015 rainbow profile picture filter campaign, added in August 2016. That doesn’t change much, but I thought it worth noting.

Facebook has suspended hundreds of apps and services and is investigating thousands more after it became clear in the Cambridge Analytica case that data collected from its users for one purpose was being redeployed for all sorts of purposes by actors nefarious and otherwise. One is a separate endeavor from the Cambridge Psychometrics Centre called Apply Magic Sauce; I asked the researchers about the connection between it and myPersonality data.

The takeaway from the small sample of these suspensions and collection methods that have been made public suggest that during its most permissive period (up until 2014 or so) Facebook allowed the data of countless users (the totals will only increase) to escape its authority, and that data is still out there, totally out of the company’s control and being used by anyone for just about anything.

Researchers working with user data provided with consent aren’t the enemy, but the total inability of Facebook (and to a certain extent the researchers themselves) to exert any kind of meaningful control over that data is indicative of grave missteps in digital privacy.

Ultimately it seems that Facebook should be the one taking responsibility for this massive oversight, but as Mark Zuckerberg’s performance in the Capitol emphasized, it’s not really clear what taking responsibility looks like other than an appearance of contrition and promises to do better.

In the case of myPersonality, the data was supposed to be distributed only to actual researchers; Stillwell and his collaborator at the time Michal Kosinski personally vetted applications, which had to list the data they needed and why, as this sample application shows:

I am planning to use the following variables: * [LIST THE VARIABLES YOU INTEND TO * USE AND TELL US HOW * YOU PLAN TO ANALYZE THEM.]

One lecturer, however, published their credentials on Github in order to allow their students to use the data. Those credentials were available to anyone searching for access to the myPersonality database for, as New Scientist estimates, about four years.

A Facebook researcher actually requested the data in violation of his own company’s policies. I’m not sure what to conclude from that other than that the company was utterly uninterested in securing sets like this and far more concerned with providing against any future liability. After all, if the app was in violation, Facebook can simply suspend it — as the company did last month, by the way — and lay the whole burden on the violator.

In a statement provided to TechCrunch, David Stillwell defended the myPersonality project’s data collection and distribution.

In a separate email, Michal Kosinski also emphasized the importance of the published research based on their dataset. Here’s a recent example looking into how people assess their own personalities versus how those who know them do, and how a computer trained to do so performs.

The statement also says that the newest data is 6 years old, which seems substantially accurate from what I can tell except for a set of nearly 800K users’ data regarding the 2015 rainbow profile picture filter campaign, added in August 2016. That doesn’t change much but I thought it worth noting.

Ultimately it seems that Facebook should be the one taking responsibility for this massive oversight, but as Mark Zuckerberg’s performance in the capitol emphasized, it’s not really clear what taking responsibility looks like other than an appearance of contrition and promises to do better.
