“Mom!” Lisa bellowed, nearly knocking you out as she ran into the kitchen. “Daughter?” Maria called, not moving from her position as her child stood with her hands on her hips staring her down. “Frank keeps taking my headphones! Tell him to stop,” Lisa said, her anger apparent in her tone. “Frank. Stop.” Maria deadpanned, taking a sip from her cup of coffee. You couldn’t help but snort in response to Maria, and Lisa shot you a look of pure hatred for it.

“Mom!” Lisa cried again, this time dropping her arms as she whined. Maria sighed as she shook her head, “Look, you two need to learn how to sort this out amongst yourselves. I’m not a mediator.” “But you’re our mom,” Lisa exasperated. “And I certainly don’t get paid enough for it,” Maria shot back, her hands cupping her cup of coffee. You cut in, wanting to keep Maria’s stress to a minimum. It had been two months since Frank, and Billy, had left and Maria had been handling the kids on her own.

It was nothing she hadn’t done before, but you knew it was never easy. “Lisa,” you called, “Leave your poor mom alone. I’ll take you shopping on Black Friday for new ones.” Maria rolled her eyes behind Lisa, but the kid was satisfied. She left the kitchen with her mood having taken a complete 180. “I birthed them, feed them, keep a roof over their heads, but alas! It’s Aunt Y/N this, Aunt Y/N that,” Maria sighed. You laughed, your hands cupping your own cup of coffee as you looked over at your friend. “Hey, Black Friday shopping is pretty much the equivalent of going into a warzone,” you called back. Maria held a hand up in surrender, “Touche. I’d never do it.” You nodded, giving her a pointed look, “Yeah, you just shop on Monday from your computer like a coward.”

“Better a wise coward than a foolish knight,” Maria said pointedly, moving to wash out her empty cup in the sink. You stood to wash your own empty cup, handing it to Maria’s outstretched hand but made no movement back towards your seat. “So,” you said slowly, not wanting to let your true intentions out so quickly, “Any word lately from Frank?”

“Why do you ask?” Maria asked, her own voice mirroring your tone. An eyebrow raised, she glanced at you suspiciously. “Just wondering,” you said a little too quickly, “The holidays are coming up, I’m sure they’re missing home.”

“They’re?” Maria repeated, now fully looking at you. You felt yourself inched slowly away from Maria, who was now leaning against the counter, arms crossed over her chest as she looked at you through a narrowed gaze. “Frank and… Billy and the rest of the good people who risk their lives for the sak-” you blurt before Maria cut in. “You bitch!” she cried, her eyes wide as she caught Billy’s name. “Language!” Frank Jr.’s voice shouted from down the hall upon catching his mother’s curse.

Maria rolled her eyes before turning her attention back to you, “I can’t believe you didn’t tell me.” You shrugged, playing it off like you didn’t know exactly what she was talking about. “Come on,” Maria said, looking at you expectantly. After a solid minute of silent back and forth, you finally sighed in defeat. “We kissed after the party you guys had over the summer,” you said in a low voice, not wanting Frank Jr. to overhear. “Oh my god,” Maria cried, throwing her hands up, “I know that!”

You scoffed, knowing Lisa probably spilled the beans the second she saw Billy’s lips brush over your cheek during that Sunday morning breakfast that seemed so long ago. “So then what?” you asked. “That’s what I’m trying to find out, Y/N!” Maria said.

“There’s really nothing to say other than that,” you explained, “It’s not like he asked me to see him off or write him long, sappy letters.” “Oh, but you should,” Maria said, suddenly moving to place her hands on your shoulders, “You so should.”

“Geez Maria,” you said as you placed your hands on top of hers, “I so should not be getting into whatever this is. It’s so hard for you and Frank and you guys are so… so solid! Me and Billy? We’re just a few weeks of kisses and back and forth flirting.”

“Y/N,” Maria started, her voice so firm that you probably would have agreed to almost anything she was about to say, “It’s hard. It’s so hard. It’s so unbelievably difficult. But it’s so worth it. Billy is worth it.” She turned squeezed your shoulders before sliding her hands from under your grip, the softness in her eyes so different from the firmness of her tone but that was Maria for you.

“Here,” she said, moving away from you to rummage through a kitchen drawer, “We’re going to send Frank a care package, and we always send Billy stuff, too. You should write him a letter.” “I don’t know if that’s such a good idea,” you said nervously, placing one hand on the kitchen counter to steady yourself.

“I promise I won’t read it,” Maria said, holding up the sheets of notebook paper and pen she had managed to find. You took what she was handing out to you, albeit hesitantly. She also found an envelope and put it on the counter next to you, giving you another reassuring look, “Look, Y/N. I can’t tell you what to do. I’m not even going to lie and say that I don’t want this to happen, you and Billy. Because I do. But, I saw the way you were glowing when the two of you were together. You were happy. You deserve to give this a shot, you deserve a chance at happiness.”

“You should be a motivational speaker, Maria,” you muttered, mustering up a smile to offer in return for her pep talk. “Yeah,” she replied sarcastically, “Once the kids turn 18 and I can quit my day job.” You giggled as Maria slipped past you, giving you privacy to ‘shoot your shot’ according to her.

Dear Billy,

I’m really only writing this because Maria is making me. I mean- I wanted to write to you, but I wasn’t really sure if that’s something you would have liked me to do. I tend to hold myself back a lot because of that.

But here I am, shooting my shot through the lost art of letter writing as Maria likes to say, the first part at least. By the way, she knows about our… practicing. Lisa is a snitch. Totally not to be trusted.

Things here are pretty normal. Normal as can be. Work is work, and I spend a lot of time with Maria and the kids. I really should get friends my own age. Ha. Well, Maria isn’t that much older than me, but don’t tell her I said that. We’re both 29 until we die.

The holidays are coming up, Halloween was fun with the kids. Frank Jr. wanted to be a soldier, but he didn’t because Lisa said it wasn’t just a costume, it was something bigger. She’s definitely Frank’s kid. They ended up going as Ghostbusters. And getting their candy confiscated for fighting on November 1st. Yep, definitely Frank’s kids.

I’m probably going to spend Thanksgiving with them. With Frank gone, Maria needs me. The kids like having me here, or maybe it’s just that I make a decent pecan pie. Wish you were here. And Frank too.

I’ve never really had someone to miss, but I do miss you. Is that cool with you?

And that was that. You folded up the single sheet of paper neatly and slid it into the envelope, sifting through the kitchen drawer Maria had gone through before to find some tape to seal the envelope shut. “Don’t trust my mom?” Lisa called out, drawing your attention to her figure standing by the door. She looked so much like her mom, arms crossed over her chest, but that smile was all Frank. “I honestly don’t trust anyone in House Castle with anything other than my life,” you replied back matter-of-factly. “Good call,” Lisa said with a knowing smile, walking over to lean against the counter near you as you carefully wrote out Billy’s name on the envelope. “I think he’ll write back,” Lisa said simply. You were taken aback by her tone, you blamed the black and whiteness in her perspective on her age. It seemed so simple to kids, kiss a guy and bam, you’re together. It wasn’t as simple as that. Was it?

“You think?” you murmured, your fingers running over the corners of the envelope, still doubting whether you were doing the right thing. “He’d be stupid not to,” Lisa replied, giving you a shrug as if that were that. This time, you weren’t bothered by the plainness of her tone, but instead felt a surge of warmth spreading in your heart, highlighted optimism. “Right,” you repeated with a smile, “He’d be stupid not to.”

Turns out, Billy Russo was not an idiot. He did write back. The letter came, taped up, in the same envelope as one of Frank’s letters. “I didn’t know my husband knew how to write a letter,” Maria had joked, slipping the letter to you after brunch a week after Thanksgiving, “Turns out, Billy was the one who pushed him to it. Something about the lost art of letter writing.”

You were so giddy, you ended up walking over to a nearby coffee shop. You were too afraid you’d be unable to wait until you got home to open the letter, so ten minutes after parting ways with Maria, you were settled at a corner table in a small coffee shop with a hot mocha and Billy’s letter.

Hey Y/N,

Cool opening. Much chiller than yours, you noted.

I already thought I shot my shot with you, but I guess kissing you wasn’t a clear enough hint that I like you? And Lisa wouldn’t have told if you had bribed her the way I do, but that’s a secret that stays with me. You’ll have to find your own way with Lisa. She’s a smart kid.

I’d say that things are normal here too, but there’s nothing normal about being out here. It’s normal for me, but I don’t think anybody else can understand that. And that’s alright, y’know?

God, I do miss pie. Make me some when I get back, will you? It’s the food I miss, the food and the beer. And Maria and the kids, of course. And you. Is that weird?

I guess not. Frank misses Maria. I think I miss you like that. So, it’s fine by me if you miss me. If you want to miss me via e-mail so I can miss you even faster, that’s also fine by me. Hear from you soon, yeah?

Billy

He even closed out his letters in a cool way! You mentally cursed yourself for crossing out that damn love you had written, hoping he hadn’t been able to make out your mistake. After you moved on past your embarrassment, you quickly typed in the email address he had written on the bottom of the letter, typing out a quick message to him.

You nearly pressed sent too, but you held back, finger hovering over the send button.

Hey Billy! Y/N here, as you can probably see as my e-mail address is my first and last name put together. Good point, we should be living in the 21st century and using e-mail. Then again, in the age of texting, e-mail writing is also a lost art of sorts.

And I know what you mean. I just like knowing that you’re well, as well as you can be. I’d like you to come home in one piece, if that’s not too much to ask.

Also, will you tell me your Lisa taming secret for $1 million?

You sighed, wondering if the rules of courtship applied to whatever this was with you and Billy. Twenty long mocha-sipping, barista probably thinks you’re crazy minutes later, you finally hit send. You figured he wouldn’t see the e-mail that quickly anyway, and that rules weren’t real and meant nothing. Just as quickly, you checked your sent folder to see if it had in fact really sent and thanks to the blessing of wireless internet, the e-mail had in fact sent. You then began refreshing your e-mail on your phone, sitting with the strange anticipation of a reply. Another five minutes of that, and you finally headed out to your car after no reply came, dialing Maria’s number at the same time.

“Of course there’s no reply,” Maria’s voice called out over the phone, “You just sent the damn e-mail, Y/N!” “I know,” you whined back, signalling your turn before slumping in the driver’s seat of your car. “Now I want to know what he wrote,” Maria commented offhandedly, and you imagined her leaning over her kitchen counter to stare out the window as she talked you down over the phone. “Over my dead body,” you muttered, to which Maria laughed out loud. “Just hold on, Y/N,” she assured you, “Just hold on.”

Maria was right. Well, she usually almost always was. Billy’s reply came a few days later, and you had practically jumped out of your office chair while at work when the notification popped up.

I’ll try and come back in one piece, but no guarantees. Also, when was e-mail writing ever an art? I thought it was always something painful adults had to do. Even thinking of the word “regards” makes me sick.

Tell me more about how things are for you, work, friends, anything. I want to know more about you.

And I would not sell you my Lisa taming secret for all the money in the world.

You bit back a smile, hoping that no one around the office was looking at you grinning at your phone screen like an idiot. Sure enough, no one was and you reread Billy’s e-mail several times over. And you couldn’t help but smile every time you did.

Over the next weeks, you and Billy e-mailed back and forth with an occasional Skype call in between. The first time you saw him on a screen was when Maria was Skyping with Frank and Billy popped in the background while you were saying hi to Frank.

“Hey stranger!” Billy called, the image of him grainy but sure enough, it was him. “Hey!” you called, your voice immediately brighter than it was a second ago and you caught Maria and Frank giving each other a look. “We can go, y’know, if the two of you want some privacy?” Frank teased as Maria snickered. “Real mature,” you muttered, playfully smacking Maria’s shoulder.

The next time Billy e-mailed you, he gave his Skype ID so that the two of you could talk sans Castle intrusion.

“Hey you!” you called, seated on the floor of your living room as your laptop rested on your coffee table. You had a cozy sweater on, keeping you warm in the midst of the rainstorm outside. It had been pouring for days nonstop, and while it meant no snow to shovel, it was hardly weather to match the cheery-ness of the holiday season.

“Hey sweetheart,” Billy replied, his lips moving in the video a second before the sound processed but you didn’t care. This was the next best thing to having him there. “How was that office Christmas party?” Billy asked, referencing an awful Secret Santa you had been to just two days earlier. “I got a nice set of hot pink oven mitts from this lady in accounting,” you bragged, your eyes wide in exaggeration. Billy laughed and the sound was truly music to your ears, “Hold onto those for me. They sound like they’re just my style.” “Yeah,” you muttered, “And I’ll get you those eyelashes you can put on your car, too.” Billy shook his head at you, unable to push back the smile from his face.

“It’s weird, y’know?” he said suddenly, shifting a bit in his seat. It caught you by surprise, you were telling him about the presents at the party that were so bad that they were good, and the smile dropped from his lips as he spoke. “Secret Santa?” you asked slowly, confused at the sudden change. “No,” he said, shaking his head. “I’ve never had anybody like this to talk to,” he said, hands moving to gesture towards the camera. “Mari-” you began before he cut in. “Nah,” he shook his head, “Not like that. Someone who’s mine.” A silence came over you, the weight of his words hanging in the air as you looked at him at the screen. You thought for a second the screen froze, but Billy blinked his eyes. “Did it freeze?” he said softly, after you hadn’t responded or moved. You shook your head, slowly at first. The sound of the heavy rain against your window were a tell-tale sign, but you weren’t sure of what to say at first. “No,” you replied back, just as softly. “I’m sorry, Y/N,” he said, the regret apparent in his eyes, “I didn’t me-” You cut in, “No, I want you to mean it like that, Billy. I want to be somebody for you. I just didn’t know how you felt, and I’m too afraid I’ll overstep something, some kind of boundary…” Billy laughed softly, the skin around his eyes crinkling up the way it did when he really smiled, “You’re an idiot. You and me both. We let dumb shit like this hold us back.” You couldn’t help but mirror his laugh, the tension sliding off your shoulders, even as the storm didn’t let up outside, “No more dumb shit.” “No more,” he repeated, “Just us.” For the first time since that kiss the night of the party at the Castle’s home, you felt at peace. The sound of the rain was now comforting, the pitter-patter against your window now soothing you as you smiled at Billy’s image on the screen. “Just us,” you said softly, “Us.”

One Year Later

You wake up to the sound of birds chirping you roll over to see your boyfriend sleeping beside you. His arm is wrapped around you. You try to gently remove his arm from around your body without waking him. You almost have succeeded until your boyfriend pulls you back closer into his chest.

"Bruce wake up," you say trying to wake up your boyfriend.

"Y/N go back to sleep," Bruce says sleepily, "It's too early to wake up."

"Come on Bruce, I have school that I have to get too, and you have business meetings to attend."

"Fine, your right," Bruce groans rolling out of bed.

Bruce walks over to the TV in his room and turns it on to channel 5 news. You both begin to get ready for your day as you listen to the news anchor reporting about Jerome's growing cult. Since Jerome has died some of his followers have started a cult and it is unknown what they are doing right now, but they are becoming more and more active every single day.

After the whole Jerome thing that happened last year your life went back to normal after about one week. The first week after this all happened you had a lot of appointments with the authorities, doctors, and a lot of different news outlets had wanted to meet with you to question you for their news stories.

After a week though things started to calm down. Jim Gordon still checks in with you every once in a while, and you still have to go to some appointments to deal with your PTSD. You went back home to live with your family and started school again, but you and Bruce stayed in contact with each other. After a couple months he asked you to be his girlfriend. You guys became super close and he has helped you a lot with getting over the whole entire Jerome situation.

Recently though Jerome's Cult has tried many times to kidnap you. The only reason you can think of for them to kidnap you was because of Jerome's fondness of you. Jim Gordon suggested that you stay with someone at all times. Your parents though are not home that often because of business trips so you had to find another more secure place to stay.

So Bruce asked you if you wanted to stay at his house while they are gone. Now you are basically living at his home, and you love it. He is always looking out for you and making sure that you are safe. You are so happy to be with him and you could never ask for anything more in a relationship.

You both finish getting ready and Bruce walks up to you and kisses you on the cheek and holds you in his arms.

"Be careful today," he whispers in your ear, "call me if you need anything."

"I will I promise," you tell him quickly kissing him on the lips before separating. You go downstairs and grab your school bag and put your shoes on.

You both hop in the car and Bruce tells his driver to drive to your school first. You both sit there in silence, you watch the city passing by out the window. You arrive at school ten minutes later. You get out of the car and shut the door.

Bruce roles down the window. "Be safe y/n."

"I will," you assure, and with that you both go your separate ways.

"Y/N can you please come to the principals office immediately. Thank you," you hear over the loud speaker. You get up from the desk where you are sitting in your English class.

"Class is almost over Y/N so I would take your bag with you," your teacher tells you.

You grab your bag, say bye to your friends and leave the classroom. The hallways are completely empty due to everyone being in class. You quickly walk down to the principals office, curious as to why you are needed there.

When you get there you see Jim Gordon and you immediately know that something bad has gone on. Jim waves you over and you follow him as he walks into an empty conference room.

"Y/N I am afraid that I have some bad news." Jim says.

"What is it?" you ask.

"Jerome's cult had recently stolen his body from where it was being kept and when we retrieved the body they had cut the face off of his body. We were unsure as to why they would go through all of this trouble to steal Jerome just to take his face off, but earlier this morning he came back to life."

"Wait, actually!" You say in complete shock.

"Yes, the cult has been able to resurrect him and even worse he is now on the lose. We are trying to track him down right now but there is a chance that he might be coming for you. We think it would be best if you went to go stay with Bruce right now. We would offer you to stay at the police station right now but we have to many officers out and looking for him that it would not be safe for you to be there right now."

"So I am going to Bruce's right now?"

"Yes you are, we have called Bruce already and he is waiting outside right now to pick you up."

"Okay," you say trying to hold in your tears and stay strong.

"Do you have anymore questions?" you shake your head no. "Alright then I will take you to go see Bruce then."

Jim leads you outside and you see Bruce is standing. You don't say anything to each other but he does embrace you in a comforting hug. He leads you into the car and you drive back to his house in peace.

"Bruce I am scared, what if he comes for me?"

"I promise I will try my hardest to protect you."

You are both now curled up together on Bruce's couch right now. He is trying to comfort you and make you feel safe, but it is not working. You are so scared of what would happen if Jerome were to come and find you again.

Alfred comes over and hands you and Bruce a cup of hot chocolate. Bruce grabs the remote and turns on the TV. One of the Chanel 5 reporters comes onto the TV.

"As has been reported, channel 5's van was stolen this evening. We are now getting video from the thief, which we will play in hopes that it leads to his apprehension," says the channel 5 reporter.

The screen than goes black before Jerome appears on the screen. You freeze, you are so scared of what you are seeing. Bruce wraps his arm around you and pulls you closer into his side.

"Testing... Testing... Am I live... Am I on Air... You hear me, ah screw it, lets do it" Jerome says directly into the camera.

Jerome steps back from the camera only a little bit and continues. "Hi! Some of you may know I died. Uh oh, take it from me death is dull! But coming back that is something. Leave it to dying to give you a whole new perspective on live."

You watch as Jerome turns around to look at something behind him. He walks up to a man behind him and whispers something to the guy. The man is tied up in a chair, and you think you recognize him as the guy who was leading Jerome's cult. This dude looks like he is about to piss himself, he is so scared.

"And I would like to share that with you," Jerome turns around to the dude in the chair. "Aw officer you look terrible, eh you got..." Jerome reaches into the mans pocket and pulls out a lighter. He laughs in his normal creepy laugh.

You look closer at Jerome's appearance and you notice that his face has been stapled back on to his body. You also after reflection notice that is voice is a lot scratchier and deep, probably because of the knife having been stabbed into his throat.

Jerome is now standing in front of the camera again. "Tonight Gotham... in the darkness there are no rules. Tonight Gotham... do what you want, kill who you want... and when morning comes... you too shall be reborn," and with that Jerome lights a bomb.

Jerome mumbles something quick to the camera, something that is barely audible, before he walks out of the view of the camera. What he mutters is something that most people would have not caught, but you caught it.

You keep watching the TV until you see an explosion go off. After the explosion goes off everything goes black. The TV turns off, the lights go off and you are left in the darkness cuddled into Bruce's side panicking. You are thinking of the words you heard Jerome mutter before he walked off camera. "And doll I will see you soon."

I know I have been gone for a while and you are probably thinking that I was going to end this story after Jerome's death, but I have decided to continue this story into season 3.

I received so much positive feedback about how much you guys like this book, and I have recently had time to come up with some new ideas that I think you guys will love.

I hope you guys will enjoy the second section of this book.

July 13th tweets...

So I like all music that sounds good. From Rap to Becky G singing her song “Shower.”

Now, regarding Rap, some of the wording can make things awkward. I was blasting 99 problems remix from Jay Z feat Linkin Park. While listening, I’m at a red light in Tuckahoe. An elderly Caucasian woman walks across the street in front of my car, and Jay Z yells, “Ive got 99 problems but a b*tch ain’t one…” I can only imagine what goes through that old lady’s mind.

now from jay z’s perspective, in what older white men would call street language, when you think about it, from that one line, hes saying he has a slew of problems, but he’s so good or suave with women that, that part of his life is set…so in the spirit of expressions among some men like: “b*tches be trippin…” , it’s a crude way of referring to women for the sake of what is understood and accepted as cool.

Regardless,”99 problems” and the Linkin park remix really stimulate you or is invigorating. So it’s hard not to listen to it for the yelling and the tunes.

Then there’s DMX, God bless his soul.

While he sings”X Gon give it to ya” or even “Lord Give Me A Sign”,he also sings a song (I forget the name…oh yeah…it’s called “X is Coming” by DMX), where one of the lyrics is about how someone crossed him, pushes him, and how he lets his rage and anger manifest in threats. How does he express this? Well for one thing, he says he’ll shoot this guys wife…ummm ok. But then he says, if the guy who messed with him, has a daughter, and she’s 15 (he specifically mentions her as 15), DMX says, he, a grown man, will rape the 15 year old daughter. I mean WTF?! But maybe like poetry, you can’t take it literally, and you gotta see “what he means” or “where this hate?! Is coming from.” To rape a 15 year old daughter, words can’t express his hate for the dad or the offender, so he chooses those words.

“Hes basically saying, if you f*k with him, he won’t stop short of killing you. But he wants to take it a step further and say he is so spiteful, that he will screw you and ur entire family. Point being, don’t f*k with him.”

Even then, though I get where he’s going with lyrics, isn’t raping a 15 year old, pedophilia? Where there’s a Will, there’s a way, and there’s always more than one way to do something or say something. If he wants to express hate, why is this grown man talking that way about 15 year old girls?! I felt awkward with the elderly white woman walking in front of my car at Jay Z saying, I got 99 problems, but a b*tch ain’t one. It would be humiliating if that elderly white woman walked by my car while DMX expresses his hate toward haters, by talking about raping 15 year olds. I mean geez, WTF?! On a comical note, based on “what’s” said and “how” it’s said, theres the song “Last Night”by Diddy and Keyshia Cole. You gotta wonder how Keyshia Cole goes along with Diddy monologuing at the end of the song with :

I think about the instructions given to people under the delusion of “wtf?!” Assisting me?! Did anyone think of talking to me and telling me what’s going on, instead of the signs in a delusional scenario that is the definition of conspiracies and leaning toward what some doctors would see as paranoid schizophrenia?! I mean WTF?! So there’s that part about not owing anything to anyone. If ur just a stranger randomly eavesdropping into my life, then until you speak to me, I don’t know you, I’m not ur friend NOR ur enemy- I mean that’s reality, that’s what the song gets at, that’s how human relationships start out.

I’m writing this, not because I’m presently mad, but because I’m relating to words in a rap song by, a somebody: Eminem. I’m nobody, minding his own business. They blame Eminem for being mean or aggressive with lyrics. But in my “situation” and adult years, I see a guy talking about dealings with human nature, while trying to fix things with his wife, and do everything he can for his daughter. Ive said before, anger can be a source of fuel for ur goals or to get a point across. I mean, under this retarded “make him a role model type hero cr*p, for the no culture or no British style class that is America”, the orchestrators like to press my buttons. The extent they go with pushing buttons is -I’m not just saying this- a type of evil that the mind just can’t digest or grasp. That’s a bit of info my brain cannot process, grasp, or comprehend. There’s something worse than the teenage type sounds projected or whatever it is that others hear- I keep saying that.

But it’s like Gospel, they have eyes, but don’t see, ears: and don’t hear…

the orchestrators you know about, are so arrogant with thinking they control every aspect of my life, they need to consider where they’re not. They push me, and like Eminem’s rap, “push me/tempt me, then I’m lifting you ten feet in the air…”

I went for the path of computer science and engineering instead of being a doctor like my brother. I would joke to people ages ago, “I don’t have the ‘patience’ to deal with ‘patients.’ ” People are so complicated…language difficulties, talking to non native English speakers, cultural differences,filters they have in their heads/biases, stereotypes they believe in- I mean what a headache. The orchestrators have people believing I’m friendless loser, while they actively keep people away from me. But in the words of Eminem, whatever f*ers, “I am whatever you say I am…”

With some of the products I’ve run into recently, what I’m realizing is this:

China now has some great ideas and products, but sometimes you have to return or exchange those awesome ideas because some things were manufactured differently or as defective. Maybe they don’t have the money for better manufacturing plants…I think people should invest there. I mean they have some great ideas and technology for compression massagers for just about everywhere in your body.

Now proud Americans may not like this, as well as what I’ll say next: with the products I’ve encountered recently, America gives off the feel or notion that everything is manufactured identically and the places where things are manufactured are quality factories…but here’s the part probably not liked: from my searches on Amazon, it would seem America lacks the ideas , or innovation, or imagination, that the Chinese are indicating in their products and technology-I mean check out the head massager helmet from Breo. Helps with falling asleep. It’s from a Chinese manufacturer and looks futuristic and the concept works. My only complaint about it was, I had to go through 4 returns, before getting a helmet that was free of manufacturing defects (i.e. some you couldn’t see thru the helmet, some had a part moving inside when moving the helmet up and down, some overheated on one side of the heated helmet while the opposite side was left cold, etc.). It’s like Doc Browns attitude in Back to the Future. With respect to something not looking like it works, 1950s Doc Brown says “no wonder…it’s made in Japan.” Marty McFly responds, “watiya talking about Doc?!…all the best things are made in Japan.” People may feel like Doc Brown about Chinese products right now, but the hard work and imagination of the Chinese will find themselves in Marty’s way of seeing things. I mean these people, be it Chinese, Korean, all East Asian born Asians, tackle every nook and crannie in their hard work. They need opportunities. Not so sure about the ABC’s or the American born East Asians, but those born in Asia and immigrating here, at least people Ive bumped into (as I’m not gonna generalize), they really give their jobs 110%. (To my fellow ABC’s, by Indian standards, I’m an A-B-C-“D” or American Born Confused Desi, so nothing malicious intended, its just in admiration over our immigrant counterparts. They are the living definitions of the “immigrant work ethic.”). I recently went for a men’s pedicure after seeing Will Smith talk about it on an episode of the fresh prince of bel air. The woman who attended to me was Chinese and I just couldn’t help but notice how much detail and energy she puts into the task. I also once had a Chinese masseuse. I was sore all over and wanted to try the “firm” massage. Ive never experienced so much effort, force, and energy. It makes you want to friend people like that. Pride aside, I think a lot can be learned from their discipline, hard work, imagination, and ideas.

So, in my search for non coffee based sources of energy that last long and don’t make you crash, I found things like “Kion Coffee,” Trader Joe’s “Well Rested Tea” (as it turns out Trader Joe’s sells its own interesting varieties of teas), the $4.99 or $3.99 “Rebbl”brand Plant Based Energy and/or Protein Drinks, and the $2.99 version of Smart Water Renew. Smart Water Renew is composed of dandelions (yeah, freakin’ dandelions give energy!!!) and lemon flavor. But it is ridiculously expensive for one bottle and isn’t available at Shop Rite. I found it at Wegmans in - I think- Harrison, NY, through the InstaCart app. As dandelions seem to be the key, I typed dandelion in the Amazon app, and realize there is a dandelion tea…I hope it gives the same focus as the Smart Water Renew…I mean the tea you can buy in bulk…why are the healthy coffee alternatives expensive?!-I’m assuming it’s because people don’t know about these things and not enough people buy them…

My grandmother would say, when career concerns were expressed, that if God made a person with a mouth, He will also give every mouth created, food to eat-to elaborate: everyone is provided for. I mean “Seek and you will find.” Put in some effort, however so, at least through a prayer or a hopeful/positive thought. I believe everyone, in life, gets what they need, for all that their respective lives throw at them.

Some people may have more things in appearance, but you may have less because you’re that much innately stronger and don’t require as much. While I’m no one, as a small example, since I was in Kindergarten, I could never sit comfortably with my legs folded. The position in yoga is called sukhasana. As a need grew, when I was older, to sit in that position for yoga and meditation, I feel life led me to find the “Alexia Meditation seat” and the means to buy that expensive seat, enabling me to sit long hours with my legs folded. I feel, if we have some faith and do our part, God or The Universe, will provide for us and take care of our needs/desires through direct means, or indirectly, by giving us the needed mental faculties and abilities to achieve our desires.

[Fan Account - Kim Sungkyu Mini Fanmeet and Live]

Sungkyu’s mini live event! Namba Hatch, Osaka, Japan, 4 Oct 2017 disclaimer: all comments here are as I understood with my lower level japanese and korean, so apologies for any mistranslations!!

Ticket and Fanclub event info Inspirit Japan members got priority ticket sales and a small discount, plus the chance to enter two events: 1. you could submit a video question, which was used in the show (more on this below) 2. ten people could win a meet and greet with Gyu before the show! Event tickets were all assigned seats, no standing. My seat was 1st floor, row G, but other fanclub members I know got row O and even 2nd floor, so it really was a lottery for seats.

Intro After the lights dimmed, There was no video intro or speaker intro, Gyu just simply walked on stage and began to sing the opening song (Kontrol) Loved hearing and seeing him like this, with no dancers or distractions, just Gyu and a mic. He concentrates so wholly on his songs, he's half hugging the mic with his arm and it really looks if he has his eyes closed for most of them. He only looks up as if to realise we are there much later in the song. wow. How I love that voice. I think other ppl have listed and videoed all the mini-live songs, so I’ll give more detail on all the non-song moments!

After 3 songs the lights go up, and he says hello in Japanese, and the mc and interpreter come on stage and beckon him to sit down on a chair. He sits, and immediately chugs water from a bottle with a straw, and says how happy he is to come to Osaka, even though he feels nervous. The (female) interpreter sits behind him and translates what the mc says into korean, as well as what Gyu says into Japanese. great idea as Gyu doesnt have to worry about trying to speak Japanese and we can just hear his natural Korean. He’s a bit more nervous than I expected, and hesitates a lot at first when he talks, he’s a little shy - used to the other members bumbling around him I guess! But he’s super cute, especially when he laughs, which is a lot tonight. Fan questions The first stage event is 'Sunggyu please teach/tell me’, where four fans (via the fanclub) recorded a video message to ask Gyu. At first we didn’t shout loud enough when this segment was announced, so the mc made us do it again, and Gyu looked very amused by us being told off by the mc. The first q is a girl who wants to know if theres any food he doesn’t eat much, or can't eat. He’s really REALLY hesitant in answering, like saying 'um... I...' and pausing, then 'um...' like he really can’t think of an answer. Then finally he and the mc talk about beef and beef dishes a lot. I think he said he did not eat beef as a child, and these days it is expensive - but I got lost on other details. The second girl records herself playing 'back' on the piano and asks what song he’d like to sing to a girl? (on a date? to woo her? not sure) she’s on the 2nd floor so he strains forward off his chair to wave at her! Firstly he praises her piano playing, then he ends up singing the chorus of 'be mine' acapella to the mc (who is pretending to be the girl) he laughs midway his song, but even does the hand gesture on 'oh!' (YES!) The third fan is a nurse and recorded her video at the hospital- she wasn’t in the audience tonight. she said she’s learning korean and wants to know his favourite word or phrase. again he was really slow and hesitant to answer, but eventually talked about a word that means friendship/you use with close friends (??) and he mentioned using it with the infinite members in his answer. If I see a J-inspirit tweet about this one I’ll RT - the details were a bit hard for me to catch. The 4th girl asks, 'you are a superstar, but what do you do to relax on your days off?' His reaction was so funny, he began: 'because I'm a superstar...' and sat up and crossed his legs really flamboyantly haha I think he really liked that question. When relaxing at home, he says he watches game of thrones season 7, and also plays games. Then the mc suggested, doesn’t he think of Inspirit? and he quickly said 'oh yes, of course, number one is thinking of inspirit, then game of thrones, then ... '(but he was laughing, such a cute liar) Hoopla. He just can’t. Sunggyu had to play hoopla (land a hoop on a stick with a number) to play a random game. oh boy. he was so bad at this game! first of all, the front row fans told him off for being too close to the number board, and he was like 'What!!' the MC too was really shocked they were so strict, lol. then he stepped back and threw, and literally missed every single time, so then he stepped really close and threw all of hoops in the box until finally he got one. his reward- 2x speed dance! at first he looked aghast, but then just laughed and put his ear mic in and was like 'ok. come on!!' he didn’t know which song it would be. it was be mine, and he did a great job-- and looked so cutely pleased with himself when he stopped, a satisfied grin of like ‘nailed it!’. back to the hoops. oh dear. he threw them all at close range and still, still!!!! couldn’t get one! he crouched down briefly in mental breakdown mode, but the mc just blatently slid one on for him lol. his reward-- the mystery box! the mystery box was a cute brown toy dog that walks and barks- you know the kind. omg he was so funny, he looked terrified as he put one hand in then yelled 'what!!!' 'what is it??' 'its moving!!' after a few attempts to touch it he couldn’t guess, so they let him do it again, this time with both hands. he jumped again as he touched it, and even sniffed his hand (???) but then seemed to hear it barking, moved his ear closer to the box. so then he guessed correctly, and laughed like crazy when the box was turned to face him. he said 'no way-- it felt different!' and then held it, said 'cute' petted it, then suddenly pretended to go to slap it, lol. a girl in the audience won the toy after he drew her seat number from a box.

the mc assisted him (basically put the hoop on the numbers as he was hopeless) to get another two rewards. The first was a group photo with us all. He turned away from us to face the camera, but remained standing, which would obviously block a huge part of the audience, lol. So the cameraman was like ‘hey! sit down!’ and he laughed, kinda embarrassed, and did so.

The second reward was he could draw signed posters for 2 people, but he drew 3 winners instead, so 3 won, hehe. He read the winner’s numbers out in Japanese, and tried speaking a little Japanese to the winners, just the odd word, but he does try! Kyu is so funny to give gifts. (I've noticed this before, he keeps a real physical distance when he gives a prize, unlike L or Jjong who hug or pet fans' heads easily) as he handed people their prizes today, he really looks like the professor formally giving the graduation certificate, like very low bowing and holding out the poster then shaking their hand formally then bowing again. when people won from the 2nd floor, they took a bit longer to get there, so he extended a hand very gentleman-like and helped them up onto the stage - to ‘aaah!’ from inspirits, lol.

Photo time We were given three minutes to take pics, and like the Tokyo shows, he spent each minute at a different part of the stage, and smiled and posed and crouched down a few times for people’s cameras. The stage lights were sooo bright that even though my eyes could see him well, my ipad couldn’t - but other friends got some nice shots, I’m sure plenty will be going around!

A Gyu survey The last prize lottery of the day was for a survey we had to answer and put in a box before the show. the survey has questions all about Gyu. The mc told him noone got all the answers correct, and he was like 'ah, I’m a difficult guy--'

q1- is there a food you haven’t eaten this time in japan? a-ramen q2- on long flights what do you do? a- sleep. he uses an eye mask. (one of the options was talk to the infinite members- heh yeah right) q3-which animal do you think you are like? a-cat. everyone seemed surprised and Gyu was like 'what! why are you surprised? Am I not?' the mc made him do a Japanese cat noise and paw-like gesture (Cats in Japan say 'nyan’) he did it quickly and reluctantly lol. q4- what do you do first thing on a morning? a- drink water. he says he loves to drink water, and his throat always feels dry after sleep. the mc pointed out how nice/interesting his throat looks when he swallows so we got a closeup of him doing that, and he just laughed, like ‘doesn’t everyone look that way?’ q5- immediately after the first tokyo mini live, what did gyu do? a - thanked the staff.

He drew three winners again for signed posters. one winner from 2nd floor had put her name on the survey form as 'sunggyu-chan'. this really amused him and the mc. when she cane to the stage he said in formal japanese 'nice to meet you... sunggyu-chan?' lol. When the games were over, he talked a little about what he’s working on now - just everything he already said at the tokyo meets, a solo concert and album, musical, plus infinite comeback and album. He said he wants to be known as infinite’s leader but also the singer kim sung kyu. He’ll work hard for both things and wants to come to osaka again. To finish up, he sang the last two songs, including ‘Because’, (whoop love that older tune) then he waved to everyone, like very cute crazy big grin two-handed waves, before leaving the stage. Hi-touch time! We had to leave our seat with our stuff and line up to high five him on the way out of the venue. Staff were strict about having absolutely nothing in your right hand so you could hi-five him easily. A small screen hid him from view. When I got around it, he was standing behind a table, with staff close by either side. He had a cute small smile, looked kinda tired but also happy. The way Japanese hi-touches work there’s really no time to talk (or think-), so i just grinned and said 'Sunggyu fighting!' as i touched his right hand. Resisted the huge urge to grab it lol!

No candy for us, unlike Myungsoo’s fanmeet, but that’s cool - hearing Sunggyu’s vocals and seeing his cute yet surprisingly shy self on stage was reward enough!

Up on the wall, the countdown has moved down to three minutes, and most of the standing area around the clearing is packed. I can already see the racers lining up in the center, some of them doing last-minute tinkering on their engines.

As we reach the other racers, I show my drone to Pressa. Compared with the other models here, it’s easily the smallest, maybe the tiniest size that could qualify for these races. But it makes up for any fragility with speed. The engine coils in a perfect circle underneath the drone, and when I flip it on, it glows with a faint blue light.

Pressa makes an impressed sound at it. “Pretty design,” she says, admiring its swept wings. “Efficient. Can it survive a hit, though?”

I shake my head. “If one of the others bumps into mine, it’s game over.”

She gives me a withering look. “I thought you said it was amazing.” “I don’t intend on letting anyone get close enough to touch it.”

She throws up her hands, but I can see the light in her eyes, the hunger for how much we could potentially win. “All right,” she con- cedes. “I’m trusting you.”

Overhead, the neon-red bulbs dim, brighten, and dim again, alerting the audience that the race is about to start. I squeeze through the throngs until I’m standing to one side of the arena, on the side closest to the other racers.

One minute until the race begins. Like the rest of the crowd, I reach a hand out in front of me and toggle my virtual-sight settings. To watch the entire race unfold, you log onto a channel being re- corded by a default drone that follows the official racing drones. Its footage will play before your eyes as the drones zip through the Undercity’s streets, as if you’re racing along right behind them.

I try to keep a calm expression as people in the audience stare at me, murmuring under their breath. Adrenaline pumps fast in my veins, dulling the thoughts that usually plague me when things are too quiet, and I smile. All I can concentrate on is the thought of winning the race. This, in its own way, is freedom.

Ten seconds before the race starts. I see Pressa moving through the crowd with her head ducked down, trying to be discreet. At the same time, she sends me a message that appears in white letters before my eyes.

Good luck, skyboy.

The other drones lift up into the air, the hiss of their engines fill- ing the space.

As the audience chants uproariously for their favorite picks, I quietly turn on my drone and warm up the engine. In my view, I see its stats go live, a scroll of virtual blue letters and numbers in the side of my vision.

The lights overhead flash once, brilliantly. At the same time, a loud pop like a gunshot echoes from the speakers overhead.

The race has begun.

Francesco Gabbani - Italia 21 (translation and explanation)

So, this song was deleted from YT last week and I was very upset, since it’s one of those older songs from Francesco that made me instantly like him. I knew that it needed both a translation and a ‘paraphrase’ (like you would with a Latin version in high school LOL) to fully understand it and that took me SO LONG. It was very hard and I believe it’s still not complete yet: there’s something I still don’t get. But! The most is done and I hope you’ll like it!

This is “Italia 21″ (Italy 21).

I’m not sure if this song was already traslated, I’m just gonna post my version :D I’m not a professional translator so there might be some mistakes. I just hope to convey the message of the song to non-Italian speakers.

- Bread, wine and sun are what Italy is known for in the entire world. So it’s religion, that’s why the ‘holy’ adjective. - Italy is said to be shaped like a boot. We also call the southern regions in Apulia “tacco” (heel). I believe the “high heel” reference is related to fashion, another thing we are known for worldwide. - We have a common saying: “Il paese è piccolo, la gente mormora” (it’s a small town, people talk) which means that basically in small communities everyone knows everything and always voices their opinions. Italy is pretty much like a big “small town” and everyone always likes to talk. We’re very good at talking and having all kind of opinions. - The “grillo” (cricket) reference is what made me instantly fall in love with this song right during the first listening. It’s pure genius. It has a double meaning: the first is related to the Jiminy Cricket (or Talking Cricket), a character from famous Italian author Carlo Collodi’s book “Pinocchio”. It basically says that since everybody likes to talk already, we really don’t need to hear from the Talking Cricket, known for being Pinocchio’s conscience and dispenser of good advices, but never listened to. The second reference I believe it’s about Beppe Grillo, infamous ex-comedian and now leader of political movement “Movimento Cinque Stelle” (the links lead to Wikipedia, if you’re curious about them). The most interesting thing is noticing how Francesco made a subtle criticism of this (known for being loud and obnoxious) politician by using a word play and a very ironic and cultured reference.

It’s a 1st of May tradition to eat them together, especially because since it’s an holiday and it’s Spring, people used to go have trips and pic-nics in the countryside, where they bought beans and cheese directly from the farmers. Francesco is using the dish as another way of saying we’ve got the side dish (vegetable or beans), the theories and good words, but we haven’t got the main course (the cheese), what matters.

- I am having some difficulties pin-pointing where the first sentence is from. It looks like another saying (”magna” is generally the dialect version of “mangia” and it’s mostly associated with Roman dialect) but I’ve never heard anything similar (it might be because I am from Northern Italy, tho). Anyway “non fare una piega” litterally translates to “don’t make a wrinkle” and it’s used both to say that something makes complete sense or that someone has absolute no reaction to something. So basically who eats (presumably those rich people from the previous verse?) doesn’t care about anything/anyone else and/or no one questions it. - “Cosa ce ne frega” is, imho, the best way to describe the Italian attitude toward problems. It basically means “what do WE care?” with a very personal connotation. How do you solve unsolvable (or very hard) problems? Whatever, who cares anyway... not our business. - Italians love football and that’s common knowledge. To quote Winston Churchill: “Italians lose wars as if they were football matches, and football matches as if they were wars.” So true, Winston. - We are also very supertitious. The cornetto is one of the many objects believed to be lucky charms. I have no idea why you have to put it on the ground, tho? (Neapolitans, explain please!). The number 17 is also believed to be very unlucky (that’s why you need a corno to nullify its powers. But while you complete the rituals, you get distracted and the match ends!)

Would he ever imagine, at the time, that he would win Sanremo two years in a row? Bless you, Francesco. - A quote from the famous “L’italiano” song by Toto Cutugno. Just like “Italia 21″ that song too was an attempt to describe Italy and the Italians from within. Another fun fact: Toto is the last Italian singer who won the Eurovision Song Contest. Is this a lot of foreshadowing or not? (Maybe too much!) - A glass of wine and pasta. What’s better? Here’s a quick and easy prescription to happiness, by every Italian ever. - “Cazzeggio” is litterally “a thing done with one’s dick” and means messing around, having fun with friends by basically doing nothing. Tressette is a popular card game in Italy. - What follows is something we call stornello, a type of folk song which basically has a standard melody and ever changing lyrics. They are usually very funny, irreverent and sexual. “La canzone delle osterie” is famous everywhere and Francesco used it to end the song in the most carefree way. - He rhymed “sette” with “fette” but I really don’t know how to explain if “salami is good cut in slices” is a sexual reference. Salami can definitely be associated with something sexual (c’mon...) but I have no clue about the rest. I’m an innocent soul XD - “Give it to me” is DEFINITELY sexual. Especially referred to a pretty blonde girl XD That too is usually part of the standard stornello lyrics ;)

Therefore answer box optimisation is a good start, and particularly from an SEO perspective its a good focus area. Are there other types of results? Steff said this is something they wanted to know. Therefore, they developed a top voice search ranking report. What were the results? Voice search ranking report Turns out theres a lot more to voice search than answer boxes. There were 25 top responses. You can view these in the slides here: One of the main findings was that answer boxes don’t always make up assistant results. It turns out that only 20% of answer boxes are used in voice search results. Why? sometimes the answers in position 0 are too long the answer may not structured for voice contains words that the assistant doesn’t know what to say So, where do we start? Research Look into your industry. There are whitelisted phrases which are already owned by Google, such as a ‘bass guitar tuner’ for example – so avoid duplicating anything that you have no chance appearing in voice for. Which industries would work in voice search? Rabbit & Pork decided to run a second report specifically looking at industry. This second report broke their original voice ranking report down into 23 different sectors. This included business, fashion, utilities, travel etc. They then went through over 100k search terms. The results? The report found that there are huge variants across industries on Google’s ability to answer questions. It showed that industries such as transport, property and tech actually have very little ability to provide answers. This is not a bad thing; this means there is a huge opportunity here. Additionally, they have been running this report over time to draw comparisons, and in fact they are now seeing Google get better and better – meaning that there are new results entering the market. Notably, knowledge graphs are being more used in voice search, as are related questions, AI and semantic related topics. Also, the noticed that ‘ten step’ type articles often are appearing in voice search, which then get sent to the google home app. How to gain voice search results? Focus on areas in which you can have an impact. We can look at: Areas where there is no answer already Where there are existing featured snippets Firstly, how do we gain answer boxes? research to find questions answer the question concisely on-page level SEO using correct html structure schema markup tracking and updating Voice optimisation is much more than answer boxes. What is Google action? Google home is powered by the google assistant which works with Google actions, which can be powered by 1st and 3rd party apps. This works similarly within Amazon. Reinier Zonneveld talks Church of Clubmusic, Filth on Acid, live improvisation and what sets him apart.

The exceeding gifted Dutch musician, DJ and producer kick-starts a busy tour season in support of his third and most notable album to date “Church of Clubmusic,” is scheduled to perform live, playing only his music except for some remixes at Thuishaven — Amsterdam. Followed by a two-day appearance at next month’s, Drumcode Festival in his hometown. Before embarking on the “Filth on Acid” label worldwide tour, Reinier will host his label’s showcase at ADE, where he will play live for 12 hours.

Hello Reinier! Thank you for making some time to speak to us!

For our readers who aren’t familiar with your music, can you tell us a little bit about your path to becoming an artist?

I started playing piano when I was 3. I’ve been basically listening and playing around with music my whole life. When I was around 10 years, I got my hands on a copy of Reason 1, and in the beginning of course had no idea how it worked. But with playing around with the functions which I really liked, I began to make some recordings. This was all just on the side as a hobby, but when I went to my first real techno party when I moved out of my parents house, I was 16 or just 17, I knew that that was what I wanted to do. The very next day I started working on it, and since then I’ve been producing and playing techno (and sometimes other electronic music styles to keep it diverse). I used to play a lot of illegal raves all around the Netherlands, and from time to time official gigs at clubs and festivals. By 2011 I did my first release, and in 2015 my music got played by a lot of the biggest names in the scene; Carl Cox, Adam Beyer, Richie Hawtin, etc. In 2016 I released a record “Rushchamber” which included “Sharp Bust” on Oliver Koletzki’s Stil vor Talent. Suddenly I made the step from sporadious gigs to touring full time, and I’ve been touring ever since.

Some of your work marries your classical background with detailed elements. How much experimentation does it take to create that balance…or do you just manage to do it instinctively?

I think this came as a result of playing (and writing) classical music, these influences will always come out one way or another. To get it right is another thing, I spend a lot of time trying things and also thinking about how you can combine melodies on the foreground with something that also bangs on a dance floor.

You recently released your third album “Church of Clubmusic.” What’s different this time? How has your process changed, if at all?

My first album, Reverse Psychology was very much focused around hypnotic / experimental techno and ambient. My second album Megacity Servant was build around melodic techno with some tech house influences. For my third album “Church of Clubmusic” I really wanted to showcase a more diverse album, that takes the listener on a trip and showcases the many electronic styles I love to produce. Something very suited for home listening, while also having tracks on it that work good in clubs and festivals. I included reworks of tracks that I made over 10 years ago, but also fresh cuts from half a year old.

On the most notable track on Church of Clubmusic…

I think that ‘Hard Gaan’ is definitely the highlight. It once started as a live improvisation in a dark club in Berlin, somewhere in the morning at the end of 2016. I suddenly turned the BPM up to 145 during my set, put an extreme distortion on the kick drum, and played the sequence of the track from a synthesizer. People started asking me at every show if I would do the crazy thing they heard or saw online from that night. And it happened that every show I did a completely live variation of just that. The track evolved and every version was different. Then at Awakenings festival in 2017 I closed the set with it, and it completely blew up the crowd (this video went viral online and is seen by tens of millions of people now) and decided to give it a name: ‘Hard Gaan’ — which means literally going hard.

On how Filth on Acid started…

Together with my very good friend Axel (who is now also my manager), we were always talking about how we would like to start a label. We got the idea for the name from a track we did together back in 2014 (Reinier Zonneveld & Axan — Filth on Acid). Axel focuses mostly on the backside of the label, but we always discuss all the ideas and plans we have together. The A&R I always do by myself alone, I like to have full control over the music we release. We knew one thing for sure: no compromises on quality, put in maximum effort and try to get people and other artists involved into the sound I was doing. No compromises for us for example means that all our cover art is hand drawn by a dedicated artist, for every single release. In the beginning this approach was a bit stressful, since a label only costs money until you stream / sell a lot of music, and especially so if you want to everything the best as we could. We invested all our savings in it. Then we’re super happy to see immediately from the first release on super good support from artists and the audience on what we were doing, and I could invite some of my favorite artists to do a release together or solo, with as the big highlight the collaborations with Carl Cox; last year Inferno and this year a 3 track EP in June that is released on 28 June.

Can you name some notable artists on your radar right now? What draws you to their work?

I really love what Mees Salomé is doing. For me he is one of the producers in the electronic scene with the best feeling for melody; the perfect balance between emotion and danceable music. The music can really grab you, while at the same time exploding a dance floor at a club and festival.

Your music is usually a melting pot of genres, do you have a vision for the final product when you start, or do you discover it during the process?

Usually I start a track when I already have an idea in my head. This could be a melody, a sound, a rhythm. Whenever I get an idea like that I record it on my phone (imagine me singing a techno track in a full airplane at 8AM) or better; I take out my laptop or quickly go to my studio to start sketching out the main ideas of the track. This doesn’t have to be techno, if I get a nice idea for a hip-hop track or an ambient piece I would do the same.

What did you learn while making ‘Church of Clubmusic?’

I really learned to think more about track order and storytelling with a lot of tracks combined. Instead of just putting the most popular tracks on top (which is often done with regular club EPs), for an album you really have to think about the path a listener takes through your music.

Arguably, there are a lot of producers in the scene. Your work, however, always stands out to me. How do you feel you’ve been able to create a unique “sound” and style with your body of work over the years? What sets “Reinier Zonneveld” apart?

Thank you! In the past I used to hear from a lot of people that I should focus on fitting my music into a certain sound of a label. I tried to do this, but it killed my creativity. At some point I started to let this idea go, and that’s when for me a whole new world opened. I just make whatever I feel like and I’m way happier with the music I make now because of it. By working this way you really open up the way for getting the sound that is inside your mind out in your recordings. Next to that I think the fact that I play only live, touring a very big amount of gigs every year, means that I have always feedback from the crowd on all the techno tracks I make. Some of them I might play 1 or 2 times to be just used for some obscure loop in my sets later on, some I feel really work and these get adjusted by remembering how I change during my live sets and implementing that for the final release. Finally, I think an important aspect in my sound is that I do everything on my own: writing the track, producing, sound design, mixing and mastering, so you very much hear exactly how I want my techno tracks to sound, without the influence of for example an external mastering engineer.

To cap off our interview, what does the rest of the year have in store for you?

There are so many good things coming, which I’m really happy and thankful for. My touring schedule is very, very busy and I’ll bring my music all around the world for the rest of the year. Some highlights for me are definitely being a resident for Awakenings, Cercle on the 1st of July in Kiev, and also my own Filth on Acid parties. On the FOA parties, I play all day or all night long live. I bring out a lot of machines from my studio, like the classic Roland gear: TR909, TB303, TR606, SH101, the Moog Sub37, and some boutique synthesizers and drum computers. I will play only music by me (with the occasional remix I did of course), showing the full spectrum of my sound. At Thuishaven Amsterdam I’ll play 10 hours all day long, and at Amsterdam Dance Event I’ll do 12 hours all night and morning. We’ll bring these shows after the success of Filth on Acid Berlin also to the rest of the world (more cities to be announced soon).

This is Part One of a Three Part Interview.

Rami Ismail is the co-founder (along with Jan Willem “JW” Nijman) of Vlambeer, a Dutch indie studio that erupted onto the indie development scene in 2010. Since that time, he has not only helped created games such as Super Crate Box, Ridiculous Fishing, and (most recently) Nuclear Throne, but he won the GDC 2018 Ambassador Award for his work in supporting independent game development.

On New Year’s Day 2019, he announced on Twitter a new video game project called Meditations. He explained that every day for a year, a new game would appear in the Meditations launcher that would take just a few minutes to complete and would only be available for that day. Once that day passed, a new game by a different creator would take its place in the Meditations launcher.

I reached out to Rami just after the project went live to set up an interview with him, and he agreed to delay the interview for a few days so I could experience several of the different Meditations games available. This interview occurred on January 10, 2019 – or, in other words, after the first ten Meditations games were made available to play. During our time together, we spoke about the origins of Meditations and how he envisioned it to be, the controversy that arose about how the developers were being credited and his reactions to it, if there will be a February 29th game for when Meditations repeats over again next year, and more.

Operation Rainfall: Could you please introduce yourself and tell us a little bit about your background?

Rami Ismail: Yeah, of course. I am Rami Ismail, a Dutch-Egyptian game developer based in the Netherlands. I am one-half of a Dutch independent game studio called Vlambeer. We are the creators of games such as Super Crate Box, Ridiculous Fishing, Luftrausers, and Nuclear Throne. [What] all of those games have in common [is] that they are pretty minimalist, arcade-y games that always try [to] do something that no game has done before. So we try to find a new spin or a new way of looking at a genre or even try to create a [new] genre of its own.

Besides that, I am a world traveler and a developer advocate. I travel the world, going to places that most people don’t think of when they think of game development. I try and see what kind of game development exists there, and how we can support it as an industry. And beyond that, I create tools for independent developers that they can use for free. Most of the stuff I work on is entirely free- and that includes tools such as presskit(),which is a free tool for developers to help them build press kits, [as it is] something that is rather difficult [to do] if you’re just starting out. I [also] distribute some upcoming projects that aren’t announced yet.

But I try to balance my work as a game creator and my work as somebody who wants other people to create games. And that’s kind of what my life has been for the past decade.

OR: What [are] Meditations games?

RI: So Meditations is a launcher. It is a file that you can download from the internet, and basically what it will do is [that] it will serve you a different, small, maximum five-minute game without text in it that is created by a unique creator. So every day has a different creator. It’s inspired by that particular day. And the launcher will only ever give you the game for the day that it currently is. So if you boot the launcher – if you launch the launcher today- you’ll get a different game than if you launch it tomorrow. And there is no way to play tomorrow’s game, there is no way to play yesterday’s game. It is very much about today and what today means to somebody and the world.

So if you boot it up today, you get a game by Cullen Dwyer about his dog that passed away on January 10th. And it’s a very cute little game about throwing a ball, and a ghost dog that slowly disappears. So you throw the ball, the dog – you as the dog- brings it back to the hand, and both the hand and the dog slowly disappearing. You can just throw the ball until they’re both gone, and I guess the memory fades a little. And I just – it’s a very poignant little game. It’s not a big triple-A production, it’s not super difficult platformers.

They’re thoughts, right? They’re thoughts translated into games.

And some creators are more mechanical, which means they’ll create mechanical games. And some developers are more experiential, which means [they’ll] make more experiential games. Some games are very personal, some are less so. Some are very clearly inspired by the day, some are less so. So it’s very varied palate of games [that] you’ll get each day, and you’ll never know what feeling, what thought, it’ll leave you with. But that’s kind of what Meditations is.

“Obviously, of course, diversity– in all its forms- is a huge part of what I believe in. So it was definitely a consideration to try and not have just have three-hundred-and-sixty-five similar developers making games [for Meditations].”

OR: So how did this project originate? Where did it come from, when did you start developing it?

RI: So it originated in 2017. I was browsing this website called itch.io – it’s a game store that love[s] more experimental game development. It’s similar to Steam or Epic Games store in that you can go there and buy games, but it’s very different in that everybody can upload their games to itch.io, and they can do it both for free or for a fee. So a lot of the smaller, experimental stuff that people don’t necessarily feel they should charge for, or people who just want to not deal with money, or people who feel that ‘pay what you want’ scheme is more fair, put their games up on itch.io. And one of the things I always really liked about them was that they have this function called the ‘Randomizer’, which serves you random games. So every few weeks or so, I’ll go to itch.io and download all the stuff that’s high in the charts [and] play all of that. And then [I’ll] just click through the Randomizer for like an hour or two, just to see what’s happening in this more experimental part of the games industry- just to a) stay up to date, b) maybe find some interesting developers whose work I’ll follow, or c) if there is anything I can do to help developers that have games that have a lot of potential. And [also to] just do something fun. Those games are always super interesting and inspiring and an incredible use of our medium.

So, one of these days in late 2017, I played a little game called TEMPRES, which was a tiny [and] little puzzle game. Very minimalist. Very clever. And the premise of the game was to slow the player down. So you had to click ten times, but between each click, there had to be more time [that passed]. So it slowed you down. You have to go slower and slower and slooooower. I played that somewhere in the morning in December 2017, and I just – it had such an effect on my day. I was thinking about this game all day because it was so clever, and because it slowed me down at the start of my day. Normally, my day starts very active, right? What is the news, what should I do, how is social media, how is work, when’s my first meeting, do I have flights today – that’s my normal day. And this day just started with ‘How do I solve this? What is the solution? What if I try this? Oh, I need to slow down.’ And it was such a different start. I just ended up kind of thinking ‘What if this little game by Tak– what if I had a game like this for every day? A game that changes the color of the day?’

So I thought about that for a few weeks, and eventually this idea came up- that I can actually do that. It’s not impossible – it’s ridiculous. Why would it be impossible? I have a large network in the game industry and a lot of interesting developers. If I can convince 365 developers to make a small little game, then it should be possible.

So I started working on that, and the first e-mail I sent for Meditations was on January 6, 2018 to Tak, the developer of TEMPRES, [asking] if I could use their game as a January 1st game. And that’s where it started.

This was the January 1 game for Meditations, titled TEMPRES and developed by Tak. In order to complete the game, the player had to wait just a little bit longer in between each successive click. The bars in the second and third image show how long of a delay there was (or wasn’t) between clicks.

OR: At GDC 2018, you led the #1reasontobe panel, and you talked about how you attempted to bring a speaker from each non-Western territory in the world to speak at the panel. [You did this] by providing a visa invitation letter, room and board, and ensuring that the speaker felt safe and comfortable speaking.

RI: Yes.

OR: At your panel’s opening, you talked about how eleven speakers were ultimately invited, and five of those visa applications were ultimately rejected.

RI: Yep.

OR: In just the first ten days of Meditations, we’ve experienced titles from developers from all around the world. For example, Egor Dorichev from Russia did January 4th’s Meditations game, Ludipe from Spain did January 5th’s title, Kirsten Naidoo from South Africa created January 9th’s selection, and Adriel Wallick in the Netherlands developed the [one] for January 2nd.

Was this international array of developers purposeful for Meditations, like it for your GDC 2018 panel?

RI: So, part of that is absolutely purposeful. The other part is just that I find that if you look for experimental developers more than the more triple-A developers, that you [will] find them all over the world anyway. They’re not – so larger projects, developers tend to be clustered around places that facilitate large development, right? Countries that have triple-A presence. For a lot of independent developers, the same goes. Even if we like to think of independent development as an international thing, especially without how competitive it’s been getting, economically – you find that the main countries [for independent developers are ones] that have good social support or that have good structure for independent development to grow [in] or [that] have existing structures [for independent developers] to attach to. For experimental game development, you find that everywhere on the planet. People just making games because they want to say something interesting, they want to do something interesting. And you see a lot of attempts to change that into commercial industry, but those are not always successful, just because of the limitations not being the structural part of independent games.

So yes, part of that is intentional. Part of it that just also happened because we weren’t looking necessarily for people who make games making money, we were looking for people who we believed could do interesting work. Some of those people that haven’t released a game yet, they’re in development of their first game. And we just said ‘What if you made a small game for us, six hours of work, no more? Make something small, make something interesting. And release that with us, and then you’ll have finished a thing, and that’ll be cool.’

So yeah, it kind of varies. Obviously, of course, diversity– in all its forms- is a huge part of what I believe in. So it was definitely a consideration to try and not have just have three-hundred-and-sixty-five similar developers making games [for Meditations].

January 6th’s Meditation was by Bertine van Hövell tot Westerflier. In order to play Meditations game, the player must move the puzzle pieces around (they do not need to be rotated) to fill the frame correctly as the time on the phone’s clock continues to move forward. Once the puzzle is completed, the player must wait for the timer on the clock circulating around to hit a particular unknown time. At that point, fireworks will go off with people cheering “Woo Hoo!” in the background.

OR: How on earth did you actually recruit three-hundred-and-sixty-five developers? How did the conversations go with them?

RI: So it varies a lot. Some of them were people- we have every type of story involved here. We have people that we reached out [to] immediately on the first week. Friends that I knew that would do interesting work. I reached out to developers whose work I’ve seen that I thought was interesting, but at that point it was mostly still me curating. And throughout the year -I had a pretty rough year in 2018- so I realized that I was falling [behind].

So I involved other people in the curation of these developers. I reached out to @moshboy, who is one of the most interesting curators on the internet and focuses on something they like to call ‘trash games’. Very small, kind of broken, kind of interesting games that do something that otherwise wouldn’t be possible with a commercial view. And [they are] a fascinating curator, fascinating just in general – the way they see games, the way they think of games, the way they curate their work.

As I reached out to @moshboy – and they curated a bunch of stuff- I also involved Jupiter Hadley, who is one of the most interesting content creators on the internet. She plays through a lot of the Jam games that are made. Hundreds of Jam games get made, and she tends to play through all of them on video. So she knows a ton of independent game developers, and she is very widely respected in that community just because, for a lot of developers, she is sort of like the first media attention they get. So Jupiter is just incredible, and getting her involved made a painful amount of sense. So I asked her if she would be interested in curating as well.

And throughout the year, some people got asked very early, and at the end there were still some spots that [we] needed to fill up. So some people got messages very late. But in there are all sorts of stories. Some people immediately, they just heard the idea, and went ‘Can I do one?’. And I was like ‘Yes, please? Pick a date.’ Some people needed a bit more ‘Okay, so what do you want? What do you need? How much time can I spend on this?’ Some of them were more negotiations, some of them were more ‘Yes, absolutely, I’m in!’. Some people really wanted a specific date, and if the date wasn’t available anymore, then they would pass on the project.

So there’s all sorts of stories in there.

“Meditations is the ritual. Meditations is ‘you’. You meditate, you do this thing. The launcher just facilitates that. The website just facilitates your access to it. But ultimately, it is about you and this [developer’s] game.

And the more we get out of the way, the better this experience is.”

OR: What was your personal experience like in managing three-hundred-and-sixty-five people for Meditations?

RI: You know that beautiful thing about ideas like Meditations? [It] is that they would never happen if you knew how much work they were up front.

And I think that’s true for a lot of things I do.

They’re just, they’re ideas that you have where you go like ‘Oh yeah, this should be doable.’ And then at the end, you look back and go ‘Actually…this was a year-long [project], this was a lot of work. This was very difficult. It took a lot of effort.’ Managing three-hundred-and-fifty highly diverse creators that have different attitudes towards games, towards deadlines, towards creditation, towards art versus commerce, towards like everything [including] communication- [it] is [a] borderline impossible job. And organizing that into something that works across two operating systems. And also managing all that into a launcher, into a format that we can read and present every day, testing all of the games on two platforms, making sure that the credits are there, making sure the texts are there, and making sure that the description is in the right format. And then dealing with the logistics of making a launcher that downloads executables to a person’s computer that runs in line with all of the security implications of that, [too].

There was a lot more work than I initially expected. And I guess that is true for most things that are interesting. But I’m really glad that I didn’t know how much work it was going to be, because if I look at Meditations now, knowing the end result I would have done it again- but if I had no idea if it was going to turn out good or not, I don’t think I would have had the courage to jump into this again.

January 5th’s game was by Ludipe. This is, mechanically, a very simple game to play. Simply hit the switch to flip between two different holiday seasons- one when the grandfather is still alive and one when he dies. The story ends with, on one side, Christmas music playing and the family all together, and the other with only the ominous sound of the ticking grandfather clock as the family is all standing apart.

OR: Near the top of the interview, you said that that these Meditation games were “thoughts”. A lot of the Meditations games and the [included] writing pieces so far have been very intimate looks into the developers minds and heart. For example, Lisa Brown talked about her major depressive disorder and how it strikes her when ringing in the New Year, Ludipe wrote about how Three Kings Day has been for him the past several years since his grandfather died, and Lucas Gullbo discussed how he handled being in “quite a dark place” in 2015 with walks in the forest with his mom and their dog.

Were you expecting developers to open up in such a way when you began this project?

RI: I kind of hoped that was what would happen. I kind of hoped that people would take it as a challenge to make something. The question I asked was very simple. The question I asked developers was: “Pick a Day. Make a game that takes less than six hours to make” -which sort of limits your creative scope- “about a Day that is important to you. And it doesn’t matter how it is important to you. It can be about your own life, it can be about a historical day, or the concept of a day. It can be about the feeling of the day. It can be about anything, as long as it is inspired by the day. So if you want to make the day a game about the darkness of winter, pick a day in winter. But if you want to make a game about your birthday, then pick your birthday.”

And my hope was that people would think of a day that is meaningful to them that has a specific meaning or feeling – a part of their year.

A ritual like Lisa Brown’s game is inspired by her ritual of visiting friends around New Year, while Ludipe’s game on Day 5 -January 5th- was very much inspired by the holidays and the sense of missing and mourning that comes both with and in the way of those holidays, and eventually recovery. Each of these days – the hope was that by asking people to pick a date, they would think about what is meaningful to them and what makes a day meaningful. What makes a day special. What makes the day stand out. And I hoped by asking that, we would get games that were introspective or that would try to give people a feeling that the developer had. That they wanted to communicate.

Ironically enough, I know tomorrow’s game very well, because if I’m not mistaken, I think that is…mine. I made a game as well.

This was very early on in the project, and I was testing the infrastructure. So I thought ‘I’ll do a game.’ So I made one as well. My game is about choices. Last year was a very tough year for me, and was very much about the feeling of having to make a choice and knowing that at some point, there just wouldn’t be a choice. Both knowing that both outcomes were unknowable for us, for a lot of choices – but it felt like all the options I had were wrong. So it’s a game about that. And it’s actually kind of a stressful game, I think it might be the first actually stressful Meditations [game] in there. Which is interesting, because so far, most of the games we’ve played have been chill and kind of like almost ‘zen’ in a way. But there are definitely some more stressful games in there. And I guess mine ends up being the first one of those.

But for me, it was less about describing the day and [instead] describing the feeling, very similar[ly] to what Lisa did. While some of the games are like the experience or the thought or the moment itself, like in Ludipe’s game or in Cullen [Dwyer]’s game. So you know, I like the variety of how close the developer wanted you to be in their brain or if they wanted to give you an abstract feeling that is similar to what they felt, or the philosophy of what this game communicates. Even just by the grace of it being three-hundred-and-fifty different people, that’s honestly the most fascinating part of it for me.

I’m continuously a little sad that I had to test all of these games. A question that I’ve gotten a lot is ‘Can we still play the games after they’re gone?’ And my answer has always been ‘Yes, next year. Next year you can play them.’ And the developers are free to release their games – Meditations didn’t take the rights to any of the game. So if the developer wants to release their game at any point, they can. But I really think there’s an added value to playing these games on the relevant dates. And as somebody who has played most of the [games] to test them, and who has recently played through all of the January games to test ‘what if they work?’, I’m almost a little sad that I don’t get to play them in the proper context. Because there really is something special about playing one of these games a day, and letting it sit in your consciousness separate from other games. Like, if you were to play Tak’s game and then Adriel’s and then Lisa’s game and then Egor’s game and then Ludipe’s game – and you played them all back to back, they color each other. Like, the influence you had from Lisa’s game colors Egor’s game which color’s Ludipe’s game.

Well, if you put them about a day apart, it actually turns out that they get to stand on their own. They stand in ‘your day’ as a separate thing. That wasn’t something that I expected up front. But for the first ten days of the project so far, that’s been really interesting [for me].

Rami Ismail (along with assets from Timbre, colinmcardell, bigmanjoe, and syseQ) created January 11’s Meditations game. When you press the space bar, a loud noise can occur and a ‘null’ symbol will appear on the screen and linger, the screen will turn red, the space bar icon will rotate, or a combination of these. When certain conditions are met (or not met), numerous ‘null’ symbols and hands can fly across the screen towards the space bar as sound plays. And at the end, the space bar can just…disappear, leaving behind only a hand. Rami Ismail went into depth about his Meditation game on his Twitter account here.

OR: The Meditations game website, the launcher, and the games themselves have a minimalistic aesthetic to themselves. Why did you choose to go that route? Did you ever explore any other aesthetic approaches?

RI: Yeah, I looked at a bunch of things. But ultimately, want I wanted Meditations [to be], I wanted the launcher and the brand of Meditations to only be there as a way to attract people in. And the more we gave Meditations an identity, the less it was about the developer. And ultimately, the goal was to make this about the developers. And ultimately the goal is that people come to Meditations because they’ve heard of Meditations, and the brand is big enough that people get attracted to it and involved in it.

But at the same time, the hope is [that] as soon as somebody has bought in, is in the ritual of Meditations, we [will then] get out of the way. So that’s why the launcher is basically just a white rectangle with text on it. There’s nothing there to color your experience, to take away from the developer’s interest. It’s also why when the game is done, most games will shut themselves down and the launcher will be gone as well. So you basically get crashed back to desktop. Just so that it really stands on its own. It’s its own thing, and Meditations is not part of that experience.

Meditations is the ritual. Meditations is ‘you’. You meditate, you do this thing. The launcher just facilitates that. The website just facilitates your access to it. But ultimately, it is about you and this [developer’s] game. And the more we get out of the way, the better this experience is.
