so last night i realised i had almost hit 500 posts on this account. and then i had the brilliant, genius idea to make a post with 500 facts about monster house for my 500th post.

this was not a genius idea in any way shape or form.

i am not a genius.

but i did it anyway, so now i present to you:

WITCHES COVEN 351) When Bruce the Minotaur gets sick - he can’t be taken to the doctors 352) The Witches Coven is the main place Monsters go when they’re sick 353) Witches are difficult creatures and the Coven are no different 354) If you get on their bad side, they’ll refuse you service 355) The Witches Coven therefore practically run the town 356) There are three families that make up the Coven 357) Admittance is only to witches with the blood of prestigious families 358) Kai is part of the Witches Coven 359) Kai’s family practically runs the Witches Coven 360) There is a lot of tension between the Witches and Phillip 361) Largely because they both have a lot of influence over Seabrooke 362) Regardless, Phillip still genuinely likes Kai 363) The Witches tend to be high maintenance and spoilt 364) The parents are like the worst white suburban soccer mums ever 365) Regardless, they are excellent at healing magic 366) But also excellent at ruining your life 367) They have definitely killed a few monsters - but it cannot be proved

LOCAL NEWSPAPER 368) The Daily Seabrooke is ran by shapeshifters 369) Nobody remembers when the TDS was started 370) Philip adores it for the crosswords 371) Apparently the crosswords are ‘out of this world’ 372) TDS is ran by a group of crazy looking students 373) Of course, they’re shapeshifters, so they’re probably all 1000+ 374) The shapeshifters behind TDS don’t mingle with other monsters 375) At least not as themselves 376) They report on human politics and news as well 377) Only monsters are sold the copies with monster news included 378) Half of TDS is gossip about the people in Seabrooke 379) Nobody is really safe from their snooping 380) Their methods include being a literal fly on the wall 381) Most breakups, Witches Coven drama, and Vamp/Wolf fights are put in 382) TDS is extremely controversial amongst Monsters in Seabrooke 383) Kenzi thinks it’s fucking hilarious

SEABROOKE UNIVERSITY 384) The University is crawling with monster life 385) Several professors are monsters 386) Most notably are Phillip and Steven 387) Phillip teaches Modern History 388) Steven teaches Medieval History 389) Phillip is a Vampire, Steven is a Werewolf 390) They have a competition for who gets History Professor Of The Year 391) This competition frequently gets out of hand 392) Everybody knows about their rivalry, few knows why 393) Nobody knows how long the two have worked there - most say forever 394) That wouldn’t be far from the truth 395) Steven happens to be Arya (Callie’s Roommate)’s father

MONSTER HOUSE 396) Monster House is practically alive 397) It constantly expands and shrinks 398) There are always exactly as many rooms as are necessary 399) Only the first floor can be seen by passersby 400) And they often walk straight past it 401) Ordering pizza is a nightmare 402) It’s like the human brain cannot comprehend where it is 403) Even though it’s in an incredibly obvious location 404) When they do see it, they see only a normal house 405) The construction of the house makes no sense 406) There are rooms hanging over nothing and stairs leading to nowhere 407) Sometimes bedrooms move and finding them is a nightmare 408) The living room and kitchen like to switch places 409) On Monday’s the kitchen is green and nobody knows why 410) It is black and white the rest of the time 411) It is almost impossible to paint or decorate Monster House 412) It prefers to do that itself 413) Somehow the bedrooms always look exactly how they are wanted 414) At least they save on paint - that shit is expensive 415) Unfortunately, Monster House doesn’t clean itself 416) Toby has registered several complaints about this

Momota was exhausted.

Two months since he returned from the space station, and he still felt the heavy weight of gravity on his shoulders with every step. He wanted to be back up in the atmosphere, feeling the weightlessness of the universe. It wasn’t so bad being back on the ground-- it was a lot harder to get in contact with friends up there in the stars. Not only because there was rarely time to send an email, but because Momota was just lost in the beauty of it all. During his downtime he had mostly just sat and watched everything from a window. Everything in the world just felt so… Small up there.

He had to admit, though, being back on Earth had its upsides. He missed real food-- fresh cooked meals and good friends to share them with-- not that his mission buddies weren’t good company, or good friends, but it was nice to see and eat with people outside of his job. Being able to leave and go home sometimes too, or taking a walk around the block, little things he thought he wouldn’t miss in a hundred years! Only to discover how much he did when he was up in the thermosphere.

Momota stretched out from under his kotatsu-- it was old, a fixture in the home his Grandfather installed. A craving for hot pot overcame him. He supposed he had enough in the fridge to make his own, but he despised eating alone. He liked to talk when he ate his meals, and he felt like he didn’t eat enough when others weren’t around (more or less cause he didn’t have anyone else’s plate to eat off of). Maybe I can invite some people over and make them hot pot. He got up to check the fridge, seeing if he had enough portions for at least 3 people to come over before starting to make calls.

Momota knew a lot of people. He knew almost an endless supply of people, it was mind boggling to others. He once heard that you can only have 150 friends at a time and all others are acquaintances, but Momota never thought that was true. He felt close to all his friends, even ones he hadn’t seen in long periods of time. Unfortunately, a lot of his friends lived pretty far from him. Most of his old school friends lived in Tokyo, or close to it and so did a lot of his buddies from work. He had made many friends in Hokkaido though.

He spent a good hour calling old friends-- quite a few of his friends had already made plans though before he realized it was a Friday night. He supposed he had let time slip away from him like that lately. It happened when you lived alone, but he still tried-- even calling a classmate who lived nearby to see if they wanted to come over.

“A voicemail, great,” Momota huffed momentarily, sounding more annoyed then he meant to. He bounced back to his usual upbeat attitude with ease though. “Hey man, it’s Kaito! I haven’t seen you in ages. I know you like a good hot pot. I’m making some and wouldn’t mind the company, I’ll even come get you if the pedals on your bicycle are still “having motor troubles”. Call me back?” He hung up, shaking his head still from the quote. Little bastard, wasn’t really sure why he called him. Maybe he just missed his old high school.

After nearly 2 hours (which, to be fair, Momota had about 20 minutes talks with everyone he had called so far, so he hadn’t really even gone through the half the list of people nearby) an old boot camp buddy had answered.

“Maybe we should just go to a restaurant and get hot pot? Unless you made it already.” Momota thought about it for a moment, stroking his goatee in contemplation, before giving a nod to himself. It was about 9 PM now, and he hadn’t thought to start preparing his hot pot setup before making all these calls.

“Yeah I guess it be a pain to make it now… Wanna meet at the one two blocks from my house?”

“Yeah, sounds good. Be there in 20 minutes!”

“Great! Can’t wait!”

It was a good dinner, he had been able to drink a few beers with his old friend and talk about how life had been going for the both of them. It made him want to see more of his friends, maybe he’d make plans to hang out with some of the ones who lived in Tokyo! He hadn’t seen Shuichi or HaruMaki a lot since high school, it would be great to get the old group back together! He’d email them when he got home.

He stumbled his way to his home, finding that maybe he had been a bit enthusiastic in his alcohol consumption. Oh well, he thought to himself. I’m not too far from home. I don’t have anything to do tomorrow either. Carefully, he made his way up to the elevated floor and sat down, taking a moment to rest. He looked down at the house slippers, blinking in confusion. Momota had four sets of slippers, one was his personal pair and the other three were for guests.

One pair was missing, and now that he thought about it, he hadn’t opened the door either. Maybe… I left it open when I left. Robbers don’t change into house slippers to rob your house do they? He gave the idea some thought and decided, no, they wouldn’t. Though maybe they would out of habit? Maybe someone stole the slippers? He sighed at the thought, he happened to really like that pair. It had planets embroidered on them. They would be hard to replace in his heart, but he guessed it wasn’t the worst thing to be stolen.

He carefully removed his shoes and replaced them with his slippers. He could check for anything missing when he woke up in the morning. He was tired, and why should he get into a sweat over some robber? He could take them if they were still here, even if he were a bit intoxicated! There was nothing they could steal that he couldn’t replace. Slowly he stood from his spot, heading into the quiet home, boastfully proclaiming, “If anyone’s in my house, I’ll kick your ass! I’d leave now if I were you!” to no response.

The air… Smelled metallic, a little like a butcher shop. Momota began to wonder if he had taken the beef he intended for the hot pot out in the open. It was stronger though, and it made the hair on the back of his neck stand on edge. He walked to the standing lamp in the room, it flickered faintly before bursting with light as he turned it on. He really should replace a lot of these old fixtures, but he never had the heart to remove his grandmother’s interior design. He glanced around the room for the source of the now sickening smell.

Red filled his vision. His kotatsu’s soft baby blue blanket had now bloomed with browning red flowers instead of white. The fern that had carefully sat was now a toppled mess

on the floor, soil and blood mixing together in long, ugly smudges on wood. Momota gagged as he approached the gruesome smell of baked gore. He prayed it was an animal who had gotten hurt, broke through the paper doors and went to the warmth of the kotatsu for protection. He knew though, however, the bloodied hand prints stretched across his floor were human. He knew that with that much blood lose nothing could still be alive underneath. Carefully he pulled the kotatsu to get a better view of whoever was hidden beneath the blanket

Laying silent under the once warm, welcoming embrace of his kotatsu was Ouma.

A tour of Brussels

From historic to hipster. Timeless beauty to rundown surroundings. Nestled within a country that was once a battlefield for World Wars, revolutions and rebellions – it has seen its fair share of bloodshed and misery. The French, Dutch, German, Austrians and British have all staked their claim to the lands at one point in time. They have rebuilt their city from the ruins of war and have created their own culture within Europe. Now an independent multicultural city flourishing with pride for their craftsmanship, food, craft beers, art galleries and more. Welcome to Brussels, the capital of Belgium and the unofficial capital of the European Union, we can’t wait to show you around.

All right, let's go. We begin in Koekelberg, north of Brussels. The outskirts of the city are more residential – just like anywhere. It is far cheaper to stay here and we were able to gain a greater appreciation and understanding for the city by being immersed in a more authentic area where few spoke English and fewer tourists were in sight. The area was more run down than the city, the cleanliness was subpar but renovations were happening down streets and we got a bargain breakfast of pastries for only 2 Euros, we can’t complain.

Anyway, back on track. Getting around. Our choice of transport in this city was the Metro. The stations are denoted on street level by a sign with a white M on a blue background. One thing to mention is that the Metro system in every city is exceptional – so far. Our Guide to the tram system. Admittedly it’s a little confusing at first, but the routes are displayed in straight coloured lines with dot points indicating each stop. So, as long as you know the destination you want, don’t freak out, take your time and read the lines until you see your stop. Which platform to be on is easy too because they will put one sign at two separate entrances and your particular stop will only be on one of them. A little tip: Google Maps is a literal lifesaver. It tells you step by step where to go and it will list your suggested stops.

All tickets purchased are valid for all public transport within Brussels including the tram, local city buses and Metro.

Ticket Price:

A single fare ticket is 2.10 Euros and valid for one hour from activation.

A full day is 7.50 Euros. Be careful with this one though as it is literally one day, it stops at midnight on the day of purchase.

If you are in town for a few days then a travel card may be of more interest to you. It is 5 Euros to purchase but you can top it up as needed. You can buy these form most Metro stations and you save up to 1 Euro per trip.

If you haven’t guessed already, Hayden and I elect to walk nearly everywhere we can. Yes, because it’s free, but also because this environment is completely new to us and we want to see every little bit. Walking gives us the freedom to make our own route, to stop where ever we want and admire every nook and cranny – and its Europe, so there’s many of those. Brussels is also a smaller city so the monuments, museums and galleries are all quite close to one another.

Food. A perk of staying outside of the main city is that it is cheaper than central. Le Familial is where we got our cheap pastries from. We ventured out for dinner on our first night at 5:45pm only to learn that most kitchens do not open until 6:30pm. Like I said in our last blog post, Europeans love their late starts and later finishes so definitely keep that in mind for your travels. We chose a restaurant/bar and ordered a couple of drinks to wait it out. Le Scenarios could also be slash night club because behind a makeshift wall was a small club with confetti all over the floor and tiny platforms for dancers. It turns out a lot of places replicate this same design so you are not short for options on a night out. For dinner we enjoyed some pasta dishes with a glass of red and a crepe covered in chocolate for dessert

We also had the best kebab shop down the road from our accommodation too. If you are a potato lover like me, you’ll die over the fact they put fries on them. But that’s not surprising considering that the potato frites (fried potatoes) originated in Belgium. We cannot remember our exact shop, but similar ones are everywhere. On that subject, you cannot miss tasting the fries, there will be a huge line, yes, but they are worth it. Thick chips with a perfectly crusted outer layer that crunches and exposes a fluffy inside. I learned that it’s because they deep fry the fries twice. They are perfect.

What to see.

Our walk started off at one of the higher points in the city and we worked our way down. We caught the Metro to Louise where we saw Palais de Justice or the Law Courts of Brussels. It was under construction when we visited but the mammoth craftsmanship was evident even behind the piles of scaffolding. We then walked over to the Infantry Memorial which was beautiful and daunting in its own right. Behind it was an incredible view of the city which also had an elevator to get down into the streets.

L’atelier en ville This place is a funky café that we thought was worth mentioning. It is a café, art gallery, clothes shop and wooden bench top store all in one. We later figured out this was the ‘hipster’ side to Brussels. So if you want a little more modern, less touristy, more artsy and more party, then this is the side of Brussels you want.

Mannekin Pis This little guy is one of the best-known landmarks in Belgium. The fun thing about the mannequin boy is that he is dressed in costume to commemorate each major celebration, event or festival. You can view all of his costumes displayed at the Museum of the City of Brussels. There are actually three little statues. One of a boy peeing, one of a girl (Jeanneke pis) and one of a dog (Zenneke). And a lot like Pokemon – you gotta catch them all, so keep your eyes peeled because they are not very big and can be around any corner.

Brussels Park There are many parks in Brussels, but this is the one we escaped into when the parade for the150 years of the tram in the city got a little too overwhelming. Its entrance is directly across from the Belgium House of Parliament too. The park is pictured below and it is incredibly busy due to the parade but it was still a nice park to be in.

Belgium Chocolate Village For 6 Euros per person, you are able to explore the Belgium Chocolate Museum. We found this self-guided tour extremely informative and delicious. We learnt about the history and process of gathering the cocoa beans, how chocolate is made, and where nearly every different style of chocolate originated from. We were able to stand in a class where the chef showed us how to create ganache chocolate, and yes, there was a taste test too. Some of our favourite moments was seeing the sculptures made out of chocolate, they were huge and the smell of cocoa was euphoric. It’s no wonder we finished our tour in the café upstairs to subdue the cravings. Hot chocolate that was made with frothed milk and chunks of dark chocolate was my poison, whereas Hayden stuck to a chocolate milkshake. However, if you are not interested in the museum and tour, that’s fine. There is a chocolate shop on nearly every block anyways. Plenty of opportunities to treat yourself.

There is plenty more to discover in Brussels, but what we were not prepared for was stumbling across a fun little parade. Just our luck. Labour Day and 150 years of the tram parade.

We continued on our walk with one destination in the back of our mind – Grand Place. It was almost humorous because I was asking Hayden to get photos of some trees because the branches were mended to create fences – honestly, I just thought they were cool. We walked alongside the tree fence around to the front and saw the most incredible looking building. I said ‘This has to be Grand place, or Kings Palace just look at the detail’. We tried to pinpoint where we were on the map to no avail. But alas, I spotted a young boy in a blue vest which symbolised he could help with information. We found out that no, this was definitely not Grand Place, instead it was Notre Dame du Sablon (Chuch of Our Blessed Lady of Sablon). A gothic-style Catholic church from the 15th century.

He went on to explain that we were standing in Rue de la Regence. The significance of this little street? It was lined with hundreds of trams. Why? Because the city was celebrating 150 years since the tram was introduced. There was every single model of tram that had ever been driven in Brussels laid out in order of year.

There was also going to be a parade beginning at 1400 hours. The trams were to be driven through the centre of the city. We walked past crowds of people, past a makeshift grandstand and behind it was at least 12 different food stalls. We got mojitos and fries and sat down to enjoy what was around us. By now we had been out for hours, and although I enjoy public things, I absolutely despise being in crowds, they just tire me out. I was ready to go home. I was a little disappointed we hadn’t seen Grand Place, but our day had been filled with so much excitement I was content.

We headed back down to Brussels Central Station ready to catch the Metro back home when we spotted an exceptionally busy street, so of course something had to be down that way. We garnered up the energy and made our way down. We stepped around the happy buskers, we admired the street markets and then we were left completely and utterly speechless... We had finally found Grand Place. And it is most definitely its namesake.

It’s incredible. A huge square that leaves you feeling minuscule. Gilded buildings that leave you feeling, well, poor. It is comprised of the Hotel de Ville (Brussels town hall) and Maison du Roi (Museum of the City of Brussels) famously facing one another and the Guild Houses completing the rest of the shape. There is detail in every little thing from the post lamps to the pillars, from the carved stonework to the gold decoration. Each building is so innately different but perfectly matching the grandness of their home. We literally spent an hour there, in that square, taking in each building, taking a million photos, looking up at the incredibleness of the Grandest place I’ve ever seen – so far ;). Being labour day, it was incredibly busy. Hundreds of people were in that square at the same time, but we never felt overcrowded. Now it was finally time to go. We had come to see what we had wanted to see. We walked back to the Metro and headed back to our beautiful Airbnb on the outer skirts of the town.

The Savoir is split into three wings - the museum, the library, and Mira’s personal living spaces. There is no “outside” in her domain - the entire space feels like its indoors. It is a small, for a domain, about the size of a mansion, and the only door leading out leads back into the Stair. It is manned by an ageless “human” named Aloysius, but whom Mira makes a regular habit of calling “Lurch” which, thankfully, he does not find too insulting.

The Door - the only one - opens into the museum wing, which is dominated by one large space filled primarily with artifacts, with nearly a dozen smaller viewing rooms spanning out to the left and right, all filed with paintings and a few specific floor-display pieces.

The library is a dense, twisting labyrinth of books, though there is a long, straight hall that runs through the center, making it easy to move through the library and difficult to get completely lost. If one explores the twisting aisles, they will inevitably come across a cozy little reading nook on their travels - usually a small space with lower ceilings, a lamp, and an over-stuffed leather chair. Sometimes the bigger ones have a fireplace or stove, and always always always there is a collection of big chunky blankets.

There is a smaller, private door hidden in behind the library’s largest fireplace which leads into a space that looks somewhat odd next to the ancient, almost medieval feel of the library - it seems like a modern luxury condo, dominated by grey marble, clean white walls, and tall windows that look out over swirling mist and distant grey cubes that might remind one of standing on the upper floor of a skyscraper during a cloudy day in London.

Backstory

Born poor in a modern-era world defined by immense wealth inequality, Mira struggled to survive during her childhood. She never speaks about these years, but evidently suffered greatly during them. The only thing she regularly lets slip is that her parents were absentee, either not caring for her as a child requires or orphaning her completely. She developed a talent as a thief and used her skill to keep herself alive, especially after her parents disappeared from her life. As she grew into adulthood, her thefts were no longer necessary to keep herself alive, but rather served to keep her in comfort, targeting the most wealthy people on her world. She hoped, one day, to steal her way into wealth and security of her own.

Or at least, that was until she was hired to steal a painting, and accidentally stumbled across Angelica’s Ring as part of the job. When she took up the item, something inside her recognized that this item was not normal, and, when she put it on, discovered two things: one, that she was invisible, and two, that she could see a door in that very room that she hadn’t been able to see before. When she opened it, she found the Grand Stair. She had no idea what it was, but it was clear enough to her that this place was not normal or possible, and that it represented an escape, so she took the opportunity and fled into the labyrinth of the Stair.

In time, she came to realize that she must have stolen a Key - Angelica’s Ring - from a fellow Gossamer Lord, and it became her mission to empower herself to defend against that Lord when he inevitably came looking for that which she had stolen. She has a remarkable talent for navigating the Stair itself, and spends a great deal more time there than most. What time she spends in Gossamer Worlds have generally been in the pursuit and theft of items that might increase her power. The rest of her considerable effort has been put towards learning more about the Grand Stair.

In time, she made a most unusual discovery - a tiny Gossamer world, hidden away in a nearly impossible-to-find corner of the Labyrinth. It was clearly a Domain created by another Lord; no world develops into a tiny library on its own. Especially not a world with a single lonely inhabitant. The inhabitant, Aloysius, has since made clear that he is not, in fact, an actual human, despite all appearances to the contrary, but won’t explain to Mira what he is instead. When she discovered the Domain, Aloysius told her that it now belonged to her - that the Domain had been created as a prize for the first Gossamer Lord who discovered it. He also refused to explain who created it and why it was left as such a prize.

Despite being initially extremely suspicious of the “gift” she’d won, Mira eventually came to trust that the Domain truly was hers - she had been gifted the only Key to the only Door, and the Domain was beginning to respond to her will, indicating that it recognized her as its master. Despite not being a Gossamer Lord himself, Aloysius has proven to be very knowledgeable about the Grand Stair and about the politics of the Lords and Ladies within.

Since then, Mira has started to cultivate a reputation for herself among the Lords and Ladies of the Stair, as someone who is willing and capable of obtain whatever one might desire, no matter how difficult it may be. This has, unsurprisingly, earned her a few friends and jobs from the Agora, where she spends much of her time when not in her Domain or exploring Gossamer worlds.

Appearance

Mira appears as a young woman with pale skin, grey eyes and shoulder-length pink hair. She is perpetually laughing, and one is often left with the feeling that she’s laughing at, rather than with, but it’s hard to say for certain. She’s just below average height for a human woman, which suits her chosen profession. She prefers to dress in a manner that would be considered slightly exotic for her home world, and more than slightly revealing.

5 ways to become a master bargain hunter

In 1989, a man at a Pennsylvania flea market bought a painting—ugly art, pretty frame—for $4. Once home, he removed the picture...and discovered under it one of the 24 original copies of the Declaration of Independence.

It later sold at a Sotheby’s auction for $2.4 million—proving yet again that one man’s trash really is another’s treasure.

Happily, we now have myriad ways—both online and off—to sort through all the world’s best “junk” and find jewels. In short, there are plenty of smart, simple money moves that can score you major bucks. Determined to score goodies on the cheap, I went exploring the world of extreme bargain hunting.

This is my map to hidden treasure.

1. Score on one-cent auction sites

“I won a TV for $5!” the ads say. Must be a scam, right? Not so fast.

Here’s how it works: Each bid starts at a penny and bids go up only a cent at a time, so if that TV sells for $5 (it does happen), it means the bid has been raised 500 times. Win, and you pay the $5 plus the 500 bids, for a total of $10—still a hell of a deal. And the site gets all the pennies from the losing bidders.

It feels like gambling, and it’s fun—I know, because I tried it on the site dealdash.com, which has auctions happening 24/7 (heads up: It’s less competition very late and very early), and it gets addictive fast. I bid on an oil painting (retail: $2,645; I bid $1.50), a flashlight ($60; I bid 21 cents), and towels ($150, I bid 52 cents), as well as toolboxes, a watch—I even bid on king-size sheets despite the fact that I don’t own a king-size bed. For only $2.01, why the hell not?

Finally, I bid a penny on a Dunkin’ Donuts $10 gift card—and won! Next round of jelly doughnuts is on me.

2. Mine for gold at your local thrift

First move: Pick the right place.

The Salvation Army and Goodwill are best because the donations are mountainous, and often the workers sorting and pricing them have a not-so-great grasp of what they’re worth. At a fancier thrift or antique-type store, deals can be rare.

Next: Reconnaissance. Chat up a worker and ask when donations usually come in. At my local thrift, I was told most people donate on weekends, so by week’s end, inventory has dwindled. Find the sweet spot.

Have patience. “Many thrifts are disorganized, so it takes great care to find things,” says Justin Cupler of thepennyhoarder.com, which is chock-full of money-saving ideas. “Move items, look in corners, dig through boxes.”

And watch for new merch. One Saturday, I hit a thrift and combed through menswear, finding only Cosby sweaters, ugly shorts, white jeans (I can’t pull off white jeans)—just a whole lot of nothing. Then I spotted them: employees stocking shelves out of bins—the unspoiled goodies! I nabbed a perfect-fitting J.Lindeberg windbreaker ($10), a new sports coat ($15), and a 7 for All Mankind sweater ($12) that sells for $150.

Two more tricks: See a shopper with an item you want? Play it cool. Just tag along behind as he shops, then if he puts the item down—grab it! And never set something down thinking you’ll “come back for it.” Trust us, it won’t be there.

3. Find gems at yard, garage, and estate sales

Eternal vigilance isn’t just the price of freedom. It’s also the key to successful garage-and yard-saling.

I began by looking on yardsales.net for not-too-far-away sales (the better the neighborhood, the better the stuff) and watched for signs for nearby yard sales—even tiny sidewalk sales—I’d normally overlook.

Saturday morning, I hit my first spot and began sifting through junk. I even rummaged through kiddie stuff—and, voilà, a Macbook external keyboard.

Once you score, don’t be afraid to negotiate: “Yard sales are all about making deals,” Cupler says. “Scoop up some items you want and ask for a package deal. Don’t offend the seller by shooting too low, but asking for 25-50% off isn’t crazy.” (The keyboard was only $10, so I didn’t have the heart to try.)

Like the buzz? Try an estate sale—a sort of “garage sale on steroids” (especially if Gramps just died and the family is clearing out the house), says Pam Carlson of Ready Set Sale!

Find one on estatesales.net, she says, then pick your strategy. “For the best loot, be there early the first day to see the full inventory.” Want the deepest discounts? “Go the last hour of the last day—sellers don’t want to be stuck with the stff, so prices drop drastically.”

4. Dumpster dive for prizes

You don’t need to actually pick through swill or wallow in a dumpster to win the garbage game. Instead, hunt on “bulk-trash days” (most cities have them), when people toss out big stuff—furniture, TVs—and roam with an open eye.

The Jedi master of bulk-trash day (OK, any trash day), Men Fitness’ own Nina Combs, has found the following loot: a new Keurig coffee maker still in the box, a wood coffee table whose top rises to turn it into a desk, two antique lamps with silk shades, and a brass-and-iron bed she then sold on Craigslist for $1,000.

More amazing, a guy she knows found on the curb a Regency table that, refinished, sold at Christie’s for $20,000. That really happened. With these images dancing in my head, I went looking myself—and within an hour had found a pristine black dresser that fits my bedroom perfectly. Cost: $0. I was hooked.

Final pro tips from Combs: Yes, you do need to be wary of bedbugs, so research online to become an expert at spotting them. (Wood furniture with no cloth is safest.) And never hunt in a pile with mattresses or furniture wrapped tightly in plastic—a dead bedbug giveaway.

But the bedbug plague has an upside, too: If you spot a find you can’t cart right home, take paper and write “BEDBUGS” on it in big letters, then stick it on. Unlike with that item you’ll “come back for” at the thrift store, no one will touch it.

5. Flip your stuff into cash

What about your own junk? I realized I had a whole collection gathering dust: DVDs and Blu-rays. I’m too lazy to sell piecemeal on eBay, so I found decluttr.com. You scan barcodes (DVDs, books, tablets, etc.) with your phone, then get an instant price quote. I shipped a box to them for free—and got a check for $117!

My final haul

A $10 gift card, windbreaker, sports coat, sweater, keyboard, dresser, $117—and zero copies of the Declaration of Independence. But don’t think I’ve given up on that...
