A small, red spark shone at the end of the valley. Night was falling and with the setting sun, came a chill that felt like the maw of a beast thanks to the rising winds. Gaura couldn't be bothered by it though. Her worries lied elsewhere. She and her companions entered the desert valley on Kazuwari, not quite sure how they would be tested, but ready for anything that the Surviving Face could throw at them. They didn't expect that the valley and their own weaknesses were the enemy they had to face. In a lot of ways, the Watcher was reminded of the Living Lands. Except her homeland never was as unfair to her as this place was.

She was never denied of her chants.

Gaura found out there was no ether to command, no memories to call out to, no remnants of the past to connect to, relatively early, during the first night they spent in the valley. They entered a cave and Aloth stuck close to her, close enough to rely on the light of her flames. But it wasn't enough. He hit his head as he fell and when the Watcher tried to heal him... her voice did nothing. The valley was devoid of anything that could recognize the melodies she sung. She was powerless to help him. And then the valley took more and more of her companions while she could only grant them feeble attempts at helping them, until...

'It's getting pretty chilly.' Edér's hand on the Watcher's back snapped her out of her musings. He was the only one left by her side.

'Right,' Gaura blinked a few times, urging herself to focus. 'We could set up a campfire if that helps.'

'Or...' he rubbed her back soothingly, 'you can come to bed with me.'

'And who's going to keep watch?'

'Whoever stays awake longer, I suppose,' the farmer shrugged. 'I... I ain't feeling all that sleepy, not going to lie.'

Gaura didn't answer at first. She merely watched her lover as he did his best to hide his own worries and his own exhaustion. There was a plea in his eyes and he smiled at her encouragingly. The Watcher, however, could only focus on his lips that grew so dry, the skin began to crack on them. Her heart sank and she looked away.

'Do you think it would help if we cuddled? I need you rested tomorrow,' she said as she grabbed her pack and looked for her waterskin in it. To her disappointment it didn't have as much water in it as she hoped. Still, she offered it, her eyes begging him to take it. He let out a small, bitter chuckle but took it. He took a sip before he handed the waterskin back to her.

'Well, being nice and warm ain't gonna hurt,' he said as he made his way to the bedrolls he lined up right next to one another. 'Sorry, I... I didn't do that magic thing that Aloth does to the pillows.'

At the mention of the wizard's name, Edér's smile faltered. He let out a barely audible sigh, hoping that the Watcher wouldn't notice, but she was watching him intently, focusing on any sign of distress that he might fail to hide.

'It wouldn't have worked anyway. Just like I couldn't heal Aloth.' She moved to the bedrolls as well, and gently pushed against Edér, urging him to move aside. He obliged, allowing her to place the bedrolls on top of one another, creating a thicker and warmer surface for him to lie on. She didn't pay mind to the veteran watching her every move that carried nothing but tension and frustration.

'He walked off worse,' he tried to calm her, but his voice rang hollow as if he couldn't even convince himself.

Gaura paused and glanced at him. They shared a moment of silent agreement. They were both worried for the wizard. They were both holding on to hope for him. The Watcher then moved to sit against a rock wall and stretched her legs next to the bedrolls, allowing Edér to lie down and rest against her like he wanted to. He, however, grabbed her by the ankle and pulled her on the bedrolls, drawing a surprised gasp out of her. His lips curled to a relieved smile as he climbed on top of her, lightly pressing against her thighs. The Watcher parted them for him, only to receive a quick kiss as thanks before Edér lied down and rested his head on her chest. The Watcher squirmed a little under him, trying to get comfortable with the upper half of her body against the dusty ground and the farmer helped her by putting a pillow under her waist.

'You think you can rest this way?' She asked once they both lied still.

'I'll rest when I know you've calmed down.'

Gaura sighed. She knew she couldn't afford shedding tears over mistakes she made when she still had someone to protect.

'I'll try my best.'

Edér nodded. 'Good. We're close. We can finish this soon. And then we'll go back to the Crucible and we take one really long nap.'

'Before we enter the fray again.'

'Yeah,' he scoffed, 'should've ditched this place when they asked for your blood.'

Gaura tightened her hold around him. In that very moment, the prospect of leaving for good felt too tempting. And the guilt of not doing so sooner felt almost suffocating.

'You're right. We really should have.'

Edér lifted himself at the sadness in her voice. 'Hey,' he said looking up at her, 'don't let it gnaw at you now.'

'I can't help it, Edér,' she shook her head and closed her eyes, stifling whatever tear intended to form in their corners. 'The more I think on it, the less I trust myself to... to keep you safe.' She felt a broad palm against her cheek, but she wasn't ready to open her eyes just yet.

'You're taking real good care of me right now.'

'But without my chants-' before she could finish the hand on her face slid to her mouth, turning the rest of her sentence to a single muffled and offended note.

'Without your chants you can still do a whole lot. Besides, I can take care of myself. And I can take care of you too. I did promise you that, remember?' He removed his hand from Gaura's mouth. 'Look at me.'

The Watcher hesitantly opened her eyes, only to be met with a warm gaze that reminded her of late summers in the Dyrwood and lush peaceful fields in the Living Lands.

'You came here because no one else can figure out what's going on here,' Edér reminded her, 'you're gonna figure out how to help us too. I trust you.'

The Watcher didn't answer at first. Edér left a kiss on her cheek trying to get her to speak again. Her throat felt suddenly very dry.

'Alright. I'll... I'll keep it in mind,' she forced the words out of herself. 'I'll finish this soon, I promise. But you better be by my side when I do.'

Edér gave her a nod. He gave her one last kiss, that felt too coarse to comfort and tasted vaguely of blood, then lied down holding her once again. He fell asleep listening to her heartbeat while she held on to him like a lifeline.

so the good place is widely lauded on this site for its takes on morality and capitalism, which i totally agree with

Another deaged or reborn Danny idea

But also Danny is Jason plotline. I've seen a few Danny is/reborn Dick, Tim, and a few rare Damian ones but I feel like we don't see a lot of Danny as Jason.

After being deaged by Vlad in another failed attempt to make Danny his son, he decided to try raising a deaged Danny instead because the boy would have no memories of his past, however during the struggle between Vlad and Team Phantom, Danny is sent into Vlad's lab portal and into the Zone, only for another random portal to open up and drop him into the DCverse and into a Gotham alleyway.

He is found by Shelia Haywood and well, we all know the life of Jason Todd after that.

Or he dies due to like the GIW, or bad Vlad, or bad Fenton Parents (Not picky on which) and is later reborn due to the damage done to his core.

It isn't until he dies and returns that Jason Danny feels like its something familiar, something is itching in the back of mind as he mindlessly wonders around Gotham after digging himself out of his grave.

And it only becomes more and more familiar when he is later found by the LOA/Talia and tossed into the Pits. Even the rage he gains feels familiar.

Later he becomes Red Hood, and that timeline happens.

Jason Danny doesn't find out the actual truth until one day the sky is ripped open by a glowing Lazarus green portal and a large armor covered being steps out, declaring he is there to fight for his crown/throne against the one that bested him last time and to bring forth Phantom for their battle.

And he had less than a few hours to come forward or else he will rip this world apart. (Pariah Dark may be a Tyrant King but he wanted his throne/crown back along with revenge against the one that stole it in the first place legitimately so it couldn't be denied)

A huge JL and JLD meeting is held and no one can find this 'Phantom'

So someone in JLD has a suggestion to summon someone from the Infinite Realms who might be able to help them locate Phantom (or maybe summon Phantom himself since he's technically the Ghost King.)

If we go with summoning someone other than Phantom, they manage to summon Jazz (whose acting as Queen Regent at the moment since Danny went missing)

And the moment he see's Jazz, Jason Danny feels his head and soul start to hurt. And memories he's sometimes see's in his dreams start bubbling into the surface.

can i just say. and this is probably a niche hill to die on. that i am so gobsmacked every time someone vaguely hints at the idea that jotaro doesn't care meaningfully for the other crusaders, usually particularly kakyoin and joseph, when those two actually tend to be the ones he reacts to being hurt the hardest

"haha wylan walks in on jesper kissing the wrong guy" yes funny but moving on, have you ever wondered why Wylan was up there in the first place. Because the last he'd seen of Jesper was him being yelled at by Colm to explain what was going on or Colm would "tan your hide so bad you won't be able to sit down for two weeks". Everyone else finds Jesper getting full government-named very funny, but to Wylan this threat would not seem empty - that is just what happens when sons make mistakes. Consider that he wanted to check on Jesper, to see if he was alright, because though it's not really addressed directly, the story gives us several moments of Wylan not trusting Colm and trying to "protect" Jesper from him. Wylan had been isolated to the point where he only knew one father-son relationship, or even one relationship at all, which was between him and Van Eck. Why would he trust Colm? Maybe he just wandered into the room for a silly plot convenience, but I think he was there to assess the damage and be there for Jesper in case the thing that happens between fathers and their sons happened to him.
