Chapter 1: Grocery Store Encounters
Third Person POV —————————————————
With a heavy sigh, Felix pushed the squeaky shopping cart through the bustling aisles of the supermarket. His bandmates were waiting for him at the hotel, exhausted from their long flight to Texas for the end of their world tour. Despite his own fatigue and longing to relax and watch some Netflix, Felix had lost a game of straws and was now stuck doing this mundane chore. The bright lights and colorful displays of the market seemed to mock him as he begrudgingly tossed various snacks into the cart, each one representing another lost round in the game. A mix of scents wafted through the air - fresh fruits and vegetables mingled with the tantalizing aroma of freshly baked goods. But all Felix could think about was getting this errand over with so he could finally join his bandmates and rest after their journey.
His eyes scanned the neatly organized shelves, searching for any signs of chips, cookies, and candy. The bright packaging and tempting aromas called out to him, promising a satisfying snack for his hungry band mates. He quickly tossed them into the cart, hoping it would be enough to satisfy their voracious appetites. Not wanting to forget about hydration, he also grabbed some water bottles and soda cans, knowing how important it was to stay refreshed. Glancing at his phone, he saw that he had a few precious minutes left before he had to head back home. With a sense of curiosity, he decided to take a leisurely stroll through the store, his eyes scanning for any interesting finds along the way.
As he rounded the corner, a familiar tune filled his ears from the store's speakers. It was one of their own songs, "God's Menu". A smile spread across his face as he hummed along, feeling a surge of pride and joy. Creating music with his friends brought him so much happiness and sharing it with others was even more rewarding. The upbeat melody filled the air, making Felix feel like he could conquer anything.
He walked past the frozen food section and saw two girls standing in front of the ice cream freezer. One of them was dancing and singing along to the song, her body moving fluidly to the beat with unbridled energy. Her outfit was a reflection of her unique spirit, with ripped jeans hugging her curves, a white tee accentuating her hourglass figure, a black zip up hoodie providing some warmth, a denim jacket adding edge, and black combat boots giving her an added sense of power. Her head was adorned with a baseball cap, its tan color complementing the two-toned hair that shone brightly under the artificial glow of the fluorescent lights. One half of her hair was black while the other was white, mirroring the duality of her unique style. Her hazel eyes sparkled with enthusiasm as she belted out the lyrics.
The other girl stood next to her, shaking her head in amusement while rolling her eyes at the other girl's antics. She had a small smile on her face, unable to hold back her laughter as she watched her companion dance without a care in the world. Unlike her companion's bold fashion choices, this girl opted for simple comfort in a tan shirt and jeans, but she still managed to look effortlessly beautiful. Her long blonde hair was pulled back into a ponytail that swayed gently as she moved. Blue eyes looked bemused and slightly annoyed at having been dragged along on this unwanted grocery trip.
Felix couldn't help but stare at them both, amused by their contrasting reactions to the music. It was moments like these that reminded him why he loved creating music with his friends. It brought joy and happiness to others, even in the most unexpected places. He wondered if these girls just recognized the song or knew who Stray Kids were, but it didn't matter. In that moment, all that mattered was the shared love for music and the connection it brought between strangers.
Felix couldn't resist the urge to join in on the fun dance party happening right in front of him. The girl moving gracefully to the beat caught his eye, her shoulder length hair bouncing with each step. She radiated a vibrant energy that drew him in. Felix found himself smiling at her enthusiasm, admiring her endearing and lively spirit. With determination, he parked his cart nearby and walked over to them, his friendly smile reaching his eyes.
"Hey there," he greeted, his deep Australian voice contrasting with his youthful appearance. "I love your moves! Mind if I join in?"
The dancing girl came to an abrupt stop, her feet faltering as her brain processed the sight in front of her. Her eyes scanned the person standing before her, widening in disbelief as she took in the tall, slender Korean man with a bleach blond mullet. His face was freckled, his warm brown eyes radiating with a smile that could brighten up anyone's day. It was none other than Felix from Stray Kids, someone she had long admired. And he was talking to her. Heat rushed to her cheeks, turning them a bright shade of red, and her heart thrummed wildly in her chest. As a die-hard fan of the group, Felix was one of her favorite members and seeing him in person was like a dream come true. She had posters of him plastered all over her walls and had watched every single one of his videos and interviews multiple times. Meeting him was something she had always dreamed of, but she never imagined it would happen like this.
"O-oh my gosh," she exclaimed, her voice trembling with excitement and nerves. "You're Felix! From Stray Kids!" Her high-pitched voice contrasted with his deep one, but she couldn't help it. "I-I love you so much!" Her words spilled out in a rush, overflowing with adoration for the talented artist standing before her.
A flush of embarrassment rose to her cheeks and she quickly covered her mouth with a trembling hand. Her outburst had been unexpected, and she couldn't help but feel a hint of panic at the thought of being judged as crazy or creepy. She shifted her gaze to her sister, whose expression was a mix of confusion and amusement. Oh, how she wished she could shrink herself and disappear into the cool depths of the freezer, away from the embarrassment.
Felix couldn't help but chuckle at her reaction, finding it both flattering and amusing. He thought she was adorable and enjoyed her candidness. Extending his hand for a handshake, he introduced himself as if she didn't already know who he was. "Nice to meet you, I'm Felix," he said with a smile. "May I ask what your name is?"
With her heart racing, she stammered out her name as his warm hand enveloped hers. She could feel the strength in his grip as he gently held onto her. "Zena," she repeated, the sound of her name coming out in a breathless whisper. It was almost as if her name had taken on new meaning in that moment, tingling with electricity. "Zena Allen," she finished, the words sounding foreign and yet comforting at the same time.
Her name rolled off his tongue smoothly and made her cheeks flush with warmth. "You have both a lovely name and a stunning smile," he praised, causing her to blush even more. "And you have great taste in music, might I add."
A playful twinkle danced in his eyes, causing her to giggle nervously in response. Suddenly, his face lit up with an infectious grin that made it clear he had an idea brewing. He leaned in closer, his voice low and excited.
"Hey, I have a proposition for you. How would you like to join us at our concert tonight? I can pull a couple of strings and get you and your friend VIP tickets and backstage passes. You'll get to meet the entire band and spend the evening having some fun with us. What do you say?" His offer hung in the air, laced with excitement and anticipation.
A surge of excitement and disbelief coursed through Zena's body. She couldn't believe her ears - was he really inviting her to his concert? And not just any tickets, but VIP ones. It felt like a dream, and she was afraid to wake up from it. With wide eyes shining with gratitude, she nodded eagerly.
"Oh my gosh, yes! I would be honored to go!" Her voice rose in pitch with each "yes" until she was practically squealing. "Thank you so much, Felix! You truly are the best!" A sense of gratefulness and happiness washed over Zena as she thanked her newfound friend.
He couldn't resist being captivated by her authentic kindness and warmth. He was eager to discover more about her.
As he looked at Zena's companion, he noticed she had been observing them with a curious yet questioning look on her face.
He greeted her with a friendly wave and introduced himself. "Hi there, I'm Felix. And you are?" he asked politely.
"Zara," she replied coolly, acknowledging his introduction with a nod. "Zena's sister."
Unlike many others he had met, Zara didn't seem impressed by his fame or charming demeanor. She held no interest in KPOP or Stray Kids, finding them overrated and annoying. Her loyalty lay with Zena, whom she loved deeply and was fiercely protective of. KPOP was simply not her cup of tea, despite being close to someone who adored it wholeheartedly.
"Well, Zara, it's a pleasure to meet you," he said with a cheerful smile. "Will you be joining us at the concert?"
Zara shook her head firmly, her long blonde ponytail swaying as she did so. Her blue eyes held a hint of defiance.
"No, thank you. I'm not particularly fond of KPOP. I have other plans for the evening," she replied with a slight untruth. She didn't have any concrete plans, but the thought of spending her night surrounded by rowdy boys and frenzied fans was unappealing to say the least.
Although she was a music lover, this specific genre was not up her ally.
Felix felt a pang of hurt wash over him as he furrowed his brow. His mind raced with questions and doubts as he tried to get her to change her mind.
"Are you absolutely certain? It's bound to be an unforgettable experience. Our songs are catchy and our dances are lively, and we all have unique personalities that shine on stage. I truly believe you might enjoy us if you just give us a chance," he pleaded, his tone tinged with hopefulness and desperation.
Zara shook her head for the second time. "No, I'm positive. I have other tasks to attend to. Zena would appreciate it much more anyways," she stated, not giving it a second thought.
She spun gracefully on her heels and sauntered over to the next aisle to retrieve an item from their shopping list, giving them a moment alone. She returned in a matter of seconds.
A twinge of guilt and sadness tugged at Zena's heart as she thought of her sister. She longed for her to be by her side, sharing in this incredible experience. She considered declining Felix's offer and staying with her sister because it wasn't as fun to go by yourself, but then she looked at him with his concerned and hopeful expression. A small smile played on his lips.
Felix turned to Zena, his tone gentle and sincere. "You're not changing your mind on me, are you?" he asked. "It'll be a blast, and I really want to hang out with you and get to know you better. And I'd love for you to meet the rest of the band. What do you say?" His words enveloped her like a warm hug, tempting her to forget her concerns and have a fun evening with this truly kind man.
Her heart was in turmoil, torn between two opposing desires. On one hand, she craved to join Felix at his concert – to witness his performance, meet his bandmates, and have a carefree time. Yet, on the other hand, she couldn't bear the thought of going without her sister. She grappled with the burden of conflicting wants and her sense of duty towards both Felix and her sister.
He stood by, waiting for her answer without any sign of impatience. The thought of spending time with him, making him happy and enjoying his company, sent her heart racing. However, when she glanced over at her sister, a twinge of nervousness passed through her.
With one last deep breath, she made a decision.
Her lips parted, her breath catching in anticipation as she spoke. "Thank you, Felix," she said warmly, her heart overflowing with gratitude for his invitation. She could feel the weight of his kindness and generosity in every word.
"I would be happy to go." Her words were filled with excitement and curiosity, and as she gazed at Felix, she saw his face light up like a starry night sky. His smile widened, revealing a set of perfect white teeth, and his eyes sparkled with joy and relief. It was clear that he was just as excited about their plans as she was.
His face lit up with hopeful disbelief. "Really? You would? That's incredible!" His voice rose in excitement, causing the words to tumble out in a rush. "I'm so glad you said yes. You won't regret it. Trust me."
She turned to her sister, afraid to see her reaction. But Zara's eyes were filled with pure joy and excitement for her. A wide smile spread across her face, expressing her approval and shared enthusiasm for her beloved older sister.
A mischievous glint sparkled in her eyes as she playfully rolled them at Zena. She gestured towards Felix, a kind and patient man who stood by with a warm smile on his face. "Come on, Zena," she chided gently, "let's not be rude. Say thank you." Her voice was filled with warmth and affection for her sister. Zena returned the smile and nodded gratefully, her demeanor softening under the gentle reminder.
Zena's gaze met Felix's once again, his eyes still brimming with hope and eagerness. She couldn't help but smile at his expression, feeling a warmth spread through her chest. Without thinking, she wrapped her arms around him in a hug, surprising both him and herself. "Thank you, Felix," she whispered into his ear. "Thank you for being so kind and generous. And thank you for inviting me to your concert." Her voice was filled with genuine appreciation and excitement. As he hugged her back, she could feel the strength of his embrace and the warmth of his body against hers, causing a flutter in her stomach. "I have no doubt it will be an amazing night," she added with a grin. "And thank you for that mini concert," Felix replied with a chuckle, bringing a blush to Zena's cheeks.
With a twinkle in his eyes and a playful grin, he broke away from their embrace and locked his gaze onto hers. "Hold on," he said, reaching into his pocket, "let me give you the tickets and VIP pass."
"Why don't you give me your phone number? That way I can text you all the details." With a fluttering heart, she recited her number to him. He quickly typed it into his phone and sent her the ticket and pass links along with a sweet message: "Hi, it's Felix. I'm thrilled that you're coming to our concert. Can't wait to see you. xoxo". The warm feeling in her chest intensified as she watched him put his phone away, knowing that they would soon be reunited at the concert.
He said with a gentle smile, "There, that's taken care of. Now, I must go. I have to check out and get back to the hotel before the rest of the band wonders where I am. But I'll see you later, okay? Don't forget about me."
His brown eyes sparkled mischievously as he winked at her. He turned on his heels and strides towards the cashier, leaving her breathless and in disbelief.
As she watched him go, she couldn't help but feel a whirlwind of emotions swirling within her. A sense of joy bubbled up in her chest, mixed with excitement, giddiness, wonder, and curiosity. She pulled out her phone and began looking at the text he sent her moments before.
Zena's sister gazed at her with a mixture of bemusement and admiration, a smile dancing on her lips.
"Oh my gosh, Zena," she exclaimed with exaggerated enthusiasm, "you're going to a Stray Kids concert with Felix! How do you feel? Are you bursting with excitement? Are you a bundle of nerves? How did you manage to score the tickets? Give us all the juicy details!" She playfully held an imaginary microphone up to Zena's face, as if conducting an interview for a popular talk show.
She shook Zena's arm in an attempt to elicit a response. "Come on, sis," she prodded teasingly, "don't be silent. Say something. Anything. You must be over the moon right now. Tell me." Zara's playful whining continued as she eagerly awaited her sister's reaction.
Zena's laughter tinkled through the air as she playfully shoved her sister.
Her heart was racing with excitement and nerves, still in disbelief that she had just met a member of Stray Kids. She couldn't stop looking at the tickets and VIP pass on her phone, trying to imprint them into her memory forever.
As Felix disappeared through the door, Zena couldn't help but exclaim, "Dreams really do come true."
She turned to walk away, her sister trailing behind her, their conversation already turning to what Zena should wear for the concert tonight. Every step felt light and buoyant, as if she were floating on a cloud of pure joy and anticipation.

Treacherous Deep

Metal groans in discomfort as its frame compresses, glass shakes and snickers, full knowledge that it alone stands as a barrier between the crew and the black depth outside. Like invisible arms squeezing the cabin with all its might, wishing only to crush the sub like a tin can. Within were 5 “Derelicts” a term coined for salvagers, investigating a signal that blew through the system from 15,000m below the tense surface of water. Clean, lacking waves, like a marble. Took 4 blasts from an orbital kinetic cannon to break the surface tension, allowing the Derelicts to go beneath its murky waves.
Passing 4,000m, the Abyss, where no light dare tread, and where only 1 singular pulse of light may emit. A fiery red beams from a subsurface station, pulsing, again, again, again. It was still a few thousand metres down, in the pitch black beneath us. Perched on the only continental mass we could find, between two cliffs leading into a massive and unexplored crevice. Depth calculators still havent found the bottom, hidden as it is, we were sent in to find where the S.O.S. was coming from.
Passing 6,000m, its been quiet, with only a few low groans from the Ballast interrupting that silence. Hideous and beautiful, the ocean is nothing but a masterpiece. Our Sonar has not picked up anything thus far, and with a 4,000 mile radius, its only proof that we are truly in an abyss. No rocky formations, no lifeforms, not even bacterial life. Just our sub. The S.S. Moloch. As we sink deeper into the abyss, my job becomes far more difficult. I manage room pressurization. Normally Automated, but the station wanted us to be extra cautious. After 10,000m, its one button press from instantaneous death due to Barotrauma. I’ve seen it, at this depth the body is its own weapon. Implosion, your body guts itself brutally, the fashion by which it does this involves innumerable organs expanding and collapsing. In the blink of an eye, what used to be your friend is now a misty cloud of parting crimson.
Passing 9,000m, in just a few minutes, our ears will start to ring, a signal I need to up pressurization in the sub, just a tick too much however, and we will meet a watery grave. The control panel in front of me started to beep a couple hundred meters up, showcasing a warning that the pressure in my specific cabin was getting too low. If I let it beep for a second longer, my cabin would have collapsed, adding to the weight of our sub and eventually sinking the S.S. Moloch. Everything must be perfect, every tiny calculation, no room for error. Our Oxygen Supply, if the tempurature increases the entire supply could explode and puncture the bow, dragging us all down with it. The Sonar, if we lose power to it, even for a moment, wont be able to notify us of our descent speed. Moving to fast, we hit a rock and implode, moving to slow, and we are wasting valuable minutes beneath the surface. The Pilot, his hands are weary and eyes are straining, sweating profusely, one wrong move and we’ve lost time down here. This S.O.S. beacon was calculated to be below 20,000m. Under the crust and buried in the mantle.
10,000m, we found the station, who signalled us into a drydock for resupply and a small break lasting only 2 hours. A mistake in my opinion, the break may only slow us down. I remained on the ship, telling those on the station I cannot leave until I can guarantee the safe reentry of my companions. About 30 minutes in, I gave in and left. The station was dilapidated, held together by the bare minimum, I believe I found some gum holding a small hole in the ground of the dry dock together, frozen by nitrogen. Depth Gum too, made out of plants found down here, eases anxiety while retaining focus. The crew aboard the station, Station Lamia, one of 4 here and the only one at this depth in The Trench. The Crew were all very calm, relaxed, and overall pleasant. They gave us food, water, the occasional ration of alcohol, and eventually sat us down for a more serious topic. The Trench. The widest berth they’ve found down here was a mere 800m in diametre. Our sub could easily slip through, but that was merely the opening. Past 14,000m, the diameter never opens up to 800m, meaning we would need to take it slow and cautious. They warned us of the wild life down here as well. Incredibly territorial and incredibly large to boot. The largest creature they’ve seen can dwarf the entire station! Its so massive that it could never find its way out of the cavern system. The caves it resides in are too far beneath the trench to explore, but a probe was sent in and never found the bottom. Only the horrifying site of an unknown station. Upon exploration of it, the researchers found scriptures of unknown languages. A sign we have been looking for, a sign of sentient alien life. The unknown station was named “Incognita” and has been probed only twice. The full station has not been explored, as part of it was burrowed into the wall of the cave. Another threat they mentioned, oozing black liquid, an ichor so strong it could stick our whole sub to the side of a building on Earth with only 5 square inches of it. Its so powerful that extraction is next to impossible. They would require a requisitioned Extraction Mech AND have it modded to survive at this depth. To put it lightly, this cave system wants us dead. The Water, wants us dead. The creatures. The rocks. The currents. All of it wants us dead. The final and most foreboding threat they warned us about, the water itself. Its not water. It feels, looks, tastes like water. But its lighter. And on a microbial scale, it too moves upon its own volition. Tiny molecules that sink into the pores of skin and bones. The molecules themselves will expand and connect during expansion. When you swim in the water, you cant come out. They happily gave us a new Depth Suit, only one and not fitted. We boarded our sub and said goodbye. The Crew gave us hugs and we left with a somber farewell. They didnt expect to see us again.
Passing 12,000m, the pressure is off the charts and hard to control. Outside is no longer black, but now gray rocks painted by my light. These rocks moved swiftly. “I thought they said this cave had a wide berth?” I said to the captain. The radio clicked on, “Yeah, I thought so too. I cant remain mad at them though, I wouldn’t want to do constant calculations down here.” He has a point. But, this is a lot smaller than they led us to believe! We barely fit through some caves! The stalactites nearly scraped my window, but they were pointed at a peculiar angle. Odd. Why would they be pointed off to the side? Maybe the ship nudged them.
Passing 15,000m, we were nearing the point of the S.O.S., with enough Oxygen to get us back to the station with an hour to spare and enough fuel to get us to the surface and back, we were all feeling warily confident! The Crew had snuck a pack of Depth Gum for us onto the ship, so we were all feeling more relaxed than normal. Even with our ship barely fitting through some sections. The ship groaned a few metres down, made us all jump out of our seats! It was so loud we thought we scraped against the wall! Turns out the Ballast just kicked some sand from the bed! Our on board engineer screamed “Watch it! We dont want to poke a hole in the ballast, you know that right?” The captain quickly responded “I-I didnt hit it! The sonar didn’t state that the bed was anywhere close to us! We had about a 10 metre difference between the ballast and the sand bed!” “Uh-huh,” the engineer groaned, “just make sure you watch it next time. Please.” “Of course.” The captain wearily said. He looked more confused as he examined the Sonar, I peaked over and saw what was confusing him. The sand bed behind us was now much lower! How can that be? Its solid rock with a pile of sand on it! Thank god we only nicked the sand pile itself!
Passing 17,000m, this cave is by far an anomaly! Nothing we have ever seen before! The cave walls shift! I swear on my life! I told the captain and he said nothing, just a blank stare. Of course, thats a staple of him. He wears drab attire, only his captain coat and hat set him apart from the rest of us. The generic blue captains coat was nothing to scoff at however, for he had a number of badges, all decorated his upper left shoulder. One patch was a commendation of performing 12 missions below 10,000m. This would be his 13th. Another patch showed his military service during The Fall. One for 40 years of service. Finally there was one I hadn’t recognized. A red patch, decorated with a blue rose in the middle with the words “Flos Occidere” encircling it. I know that Patch I just cant put a name to it!
Passing 19,000m, we were approximately 1 hour from the S.O.S. The Captain turned to me, with his dead glare he said “I want you to go in the Suit and investigate the signal.” I was surprised, “Why me?” I asked. He spoke again, this time without tone “I want you to go in the suit and investigate the signal, thats an order.” I quickly responded “Yes sir!”. But something felt off about him. As we descended, the pressure began to stabilize and I asked him “May I go get a drink, sir?” He nodded quietly, eyes fixated on the sonar, which shifted every few minutes. I got up and began my descent into the musty storage, where I picked up a flashlight, a Seal, and a bottle of water. As I turned around the Engineering Chief was behind me, glaring at me with similarly dead eyes. “You got what you need for your dive?” I nodded, shaken by his posture and gaze, “Wait, how did you know I was diving? The captain never sent out a mess-” He turned around and grabbed a handheld sonar and the Dive Suit I was going to wear, “Better get prepared, we are only 500m from the bottom.” then he shoved them all into my arms and slowly walked away. I was trembling, both from that encounter, and the thought that we were already only 500m away from “The Bottom”. Which means either we are descending fast, or the caves shifted again, bringing the Beacon closer to us for some unexplained reason.
20,000m. We stopped just a few meters away from a Derelict, crushed into itself with triangular holes roughly grinded into the body. The scene was horrendous. I was alone in the jettison chamber, in my suit with an hour of oxygen available to me. I booted up my Seal, and it began to whir rapidly. I turned it off to preserve power, and gave a thumbs up to the camera. Voice Comms werent available in this suit, unfortunately, so I was on my own. The chamber opened and a cold wash of liquid cleaned the scuffs off my suit and I was immediately enveloped by the deep black. The ships bow lights were on, illuminated the whole of the wreck. I booted my Seal up again and it tugged me towards the wreck, where its perched flashlight poked into recesses and revealed exploded Oxygen Tanks and cracked glass. After surveying the outside, I wormed my way within through an incredibly large hold, the same triangular holds decorated the rim of it. The steel door ahead of me was covered in that ichor the crew on the station mentioned, so I wasnt getting in through that. Luckily the way the ship was bent showed a smaller hole that gave way to the inside. I barely squeezed through, and before I knew it I was inside the Medical Bay. Only a distorted arm floated towards the ceiling, other than that, the place was empty. I noticed that the door had claw marks on it, something with incredible strength tried to break in. I found the S.O.S. Beacon and turned it off.
As soon as the switch clicked into place, though, the lights from the sub were gone. Replaced by a deafening squeal of metal against stone, similar to that a rumble began beneath my feet! I had to get out of the sub! I clawed my way to a hole and began to tear through the rusted metal with only my hands. Unfortunately, the metal had cut a hole into my glove! I swam out, searching for my Sub, but nothing was there except the dead black! Limitless, I used my seal to chase upwards for a minute and found nothing, not even the cave walls! I felt a current, a pull, the water shifted from behind me! An unknown presence was here! I quickly descended back to the sub, and sheltered myself inside the Medical Bay. I saw something move, something massive! Enormous teeth and a gaping maw! Eventually, it all went black again, my light flickered off so all I could see was black! It came back on again, illuminated a pale figure in the distance, outside the hole in the sub, a massive mouth with hundreds of teeth, all swirling in an oval! It drew closer and closer, until I could see the shine of its teeth! It slammed into the sub, my light flashed off again, and all I could hear were the hideous moans emitted from the sub itself as it conformed to the mouth biting into it. The rumbling began again, god I cant take another cave shift! It continued for minutes on end until grinding to a halt! It was all quiet! My light still didnt work, the battery finally ran out! I felt the rush of the water, the water shifted again! But this time, it was next to me! I reached for my belt and grabbed an emergency flare, I struggled with the tip for a while and fumbled lighting it, until eventually, it snapped to life! And before me, illuminated by the red of my flare, a horrific figure appeared and disappeared again. It looked to have tentacles! I have no idea! I slowly rose to my feet, the whole medical bay was illuminated now, I could see the hole! Instantly I got up and swam out, where I was met with a distant sound that rang through my body. I felt something slowly envelope my leg, and tug me downwards. I let go of the flare and flailed back and forth as the thing grabbing me did! I was hurled into the sand, where I snagged a small pointed rock, which I used to jab into the gripping mass! With one hand I held it, and with the other I punched into the squishy thing with the rock! It let go, and I began to fall deeper. The flare was below me, showcasing a massive cave, something from my deepest nightmares! The walls were flexing and slowly writhing into itself, weaving a horrid shape around me. I continued to fall, feeling the water rush around me, watching the flare as it too fell. The walls began to slowly narrow, until only a small hole, big enough for one person to fit was found. It looked like it was excavated. When I gently landed beside the hole, I picked up the now dying flare. I raised it, nothing was around me! But i felt the water rushing to and fro. I reluctantly hopped into the hole, and slowly descended into it. I fell for what felt like hours, before reaching a small cave with no way out. When I hit the ground, a horrific sound bellowed through the cave. Another groan. The flare died out. I was alone in a crunchy pit. It felt like the floors were made of wood that had been burnt to cinders.
An hour passed, I began crying, watching my Oxygen Supply deplete slowly. Just let me die already. Before me, I saw a small yellow light, it was growing in size! Its the end! I’m free! I jumped to my feet and stammered closer! On my approached I realized, it was something physical. The size of a Walnut, growing, becoming more bright. It began to illuminate something it was hanging on. I moved in for a closer look, my hand outstretched to grab the pulsing seed. Until the seed flashed brightly, and showcased the horror that held it. Long, gangly hands. All its bones were grotesquely lengthened, and a swirling mass of tentacles weaving into a ball laid at its feet. A human skeleton. Its ribcage still loosely intact, and its arms slowly enveloping me. The skull was fully dysmorphic, the upper half of the skull was lengthened with sharp, elongated teeth pointing from the front. Below its jaw hung, barely held to to the skull. From the roof of the mouth, the seed hung. How was it moving? The last thought that crossed my mind. Only to be answered, by the realization of that very black ichor covering the joints and crossing from one bone to another. As its arms closed in, its head moved towards me, and the light began to fade.

Top 10 Indie Games of the Decade (5 - 1)

I don’t find difficult games fun. I can understand and appreciate people who enjoy the challenge and I’m not afraid to dive into something hard as long as its balanced right but more often than not, I find it purely frustrating and the result often gives me a headache. Celeste is... a hard video game. There are moments in the game where I had to put my controller down, take a breath, and pick it up again before dying a bunch more times on a single screen. But never once did I feel frustrated as I often do with games that are difficult. Because that’s what Celeste is about.
Madeline, the protagonist, is just coming off of what’s implied to be a big mental breakdown and her bad brains and anxiety-riddled feelings feel the best way to defeat it is to climb Celeste Mountain. Despite warnings from others, and offers of help from fellow climbers, Madeline is determined to make it on her own. She has to do it by herself. And soon her determination is taunted by her own internal monologue, manifested on his mysterious mountain by a spectre-like mirror vision of herself.
But Madeline never stops. And despite my occasionally need to put the game down, neither did I. The game at no point pulls a dirty trick, even during the vastly more difficult B-side challenges it provides. Its pure pattern recognition. So every so often I would put my controller down, take a breath, and pick it up again. Because I was as determined to control my frustration as Madeline was to conquer her fears. The headaches I often get with hard games never manifested. Sure, my hands hurt after every level from gripping the controller but, in the end, I had felt satisfied, even proud, to have scaled Celeste Mountain along with Madeline. Even if well... take a look

16 hours and 3000 deaths and it was fully worth it.
4. Cuphead
Tumblr media
I remember it fairly vividly. A quick cut of indie games for the Xbox One back in 2013 at E3. Just a sizzle reel of the games coming and I saw Cuphead. I believe my exact reaction on Twitter was “HEY WAIT WHAT WAS THAT HOLD ON” or something similar.
As someone passionate about animation history, it stood out strong for all the reasons everyone loved it. The bouncing rubber hose animation (fully hand drawn and digitized), the echoes of Fleischer Studios and extremely early Warner Bros, the intensely jazzy soundtrack full of washed out audio. But what made Cuphead really unique to me was it wasn’t just a tribute to one old form of media.
Sure, of course, the 30s animation style was my big draw, but as more stuff came out about it, I noticed it was essentially just Gunstar Heroes, Treasure’s incredible frantic run and gunner for the Sega Genesis. With that element, Cuphead transformed for me from a game that looks pretty and has a fun concept to a game I knew I would love. And, despite waiting 6 years for it to come out on a platform I could actually play it on, I absolutely did love it.
Unlike Celeste, I did eventually put down the punishingly difficult ode to old school cartoons, but I know its there waiting for me to pick it up again and marvel at every focused enemy encounter and every lushly animated boss fights and stages.
3. What Remains of Edith Finch
Tumblr media
Annapurna Films came out swinging hard in 2017 with their game publishing branch Annapurna Interactive by releasing Unfinished Swan creator Giant Sparrow’s follow up game, a simple “walking simulator” focused on familial lineage.
Edith Finch returns to her old family home located off the coast of Washington. A large estate full of locked doors full of rooms frozen in time, preserved as shrines. You see, the Finches are, in a way, unfortunately cursed, forever plagued with dying in often odd circumstances. As you explore this home and Edith’s narration guides the player. Each room lets you experience a minigame of sorts, a vignette of that very death, told often from the perspective of that very Finch, each one interpreted in its own way.
As morose as that sounds, and there are plenty of sad moments (you play as a damn baby who drowns in a bathtub for crying out loud), its a game who’s whimsy and gallows humor is proudly worn on its sleeve. One story has you playing as a hermit Finch who lives in the home’s basement, desperate to avoid the curse, as you open cans of food over the years. That’s it. That’s the gameplay. And as soon as that Finch feels confident to have survived the curse, he walks out through a hole in his bunker, only to find himself on the railroad tracks with a train approaching.
And in a lot of ways, that’s what Edith Finch is about. Its a game that exists to be about the absurdity and peculiarities of death, what makes it sad, what makes it often funny and how it affects those who love those who have died. Edith Finch is like playing an interactive eulogy to a family that never existed and there are multiple moments that gave me a good laugh and plenty that made me tear up.
2. Undertale
Tumblr media
I don’t have anything to say about Undertale. Its an insanely popular video game and for good reason. A story full of heart and a weird sense of humor, a game that subverts traditional RPG mechanics by not only letting you whether to fight or spare your enemies but turns an enemy’s attack into an always cool bullet hell sequence.
Its a game who’s characters are well known, its lines are repeated often, its soundtrack has been turned into memes and is intensely beautiful constantly.
I have nothing to say about Undertale because Undertale speaks for itself. It is an independent underdog game that blasted into the stratosphere of video games. Its good. Play it sometime.
1. Frog Fractions
Tumblr media
I wish I could even begin to describe what Frog Fractions is but I can’t begin to express my love for this free weird browser game. Ostensibly a parody of edutainment games, you play as a frog eating bugs to keep them away from fruit and those fruits you collect go toward upgrades. Its fairly simple until, uh... it isn’t.
The ultimate joke of the game is that this fraction game about frogs is barely about frogs and, of course, never about fractions. The only fractions that you actually see are the weird points you gain when eating the bugs. And then that edutainment game becomes a shoot-em-up, which becomes a maze, which becomes a text adventure, then a DDR-like, then it just keeps going on like this until it just suddenly ends. Frog Fractions just kinda never stops until it very quickly does.
What makes Frog Fractions incredible to me is there aren’t many other games that came out this decade that, despite the vast connection between people that now exists with social media and chat platforms like Skype and Discord, elicited such a strong “Hey you gotta check this thing out” reaction as Frog Fraction did in my circle. I remember there being a lot of talk about both not spoiling what happens in it and helping each other try to solve that goddamn text adventure section where you’re fixing a spaceship.
Frog Fractions, for its pure word of mouth weirdness, managed to create enough buzz to even make a sequel, one that came out years after the first one that was slowly revealed with an insane ARG that included hidden images in other indie games (Firewatch included) and eventually launched inside ANOTHER game that you had to dig deep to find. And as fun and weird as Frog Fractions 2, it only has its progenitor to thank for the pure weirdness that it. A game that exists to be “Check this out”, especially in an era of social media, and a game that is just so fantastically bizarre that sends you on a journey through Bug Mars and beyond. That’s the best indie game of the decade.

if i haven’t made it clear by now Breath of the Wild is one of my favorite games of all time even if i’ve only had it like a week and a half. obviously it has its problems but when it hits it’s an overwhelming sense of joy and, not to be overdramatic, but pure euphoria that i don’t think i’ve gotten from any video game since playing the original kingdom hearts as a young child. there’s one moment that decided this for me, botw spoilers under the cut
so i was still very early in the game (i think i maybe had 5 health total and 1 extra stamina thing) when i decide to take a peek at my local map (which is about 3 areas total at this point) and notice a location called purifier lake. purifier huh? must be something pretty interesting, like that’s no geographic name, it has meaning. on a whim, i decide to check it out. i place a map marker and get moving. as i start to neat the basin, i notice there’s a cobble pathway, a stone arch at the entrance. further vindicated in my suspicion that there’s something interesting in the area, i walk in, and no more than 5 seconds into the basin i lay eyes on my first lynel. at this point everyone has their “first lynel” story, but most people experience it along the zora questline, being led to expect a tough battle at mount polymus. i had no such buildup; as far as i knew this was just some special area that might contain some secrets. i notch an arrow, take a shot, and in no time the beast has turned around and begun firing lightning rounds at me. not willing to turn back after coming this far, i fight the damn thing and, at the expense of all the fairies i was holding and most of my weapons, i defeat it. after being impressed by its loot (a triple shot bow!? how powerful) i move towards the actual lake itself which, aside from a hinox (something i had encountered before already) and some ore, didnt have much i cared about. still high off of both of my victories, i take notice of a secluded, snowy area directly adjacent--lanayru snowfield
on a whim, i decide to investigate. after all, i brought a sweater, i had some leftover spicy food, what could be the harm?
i enter the snowfield, and this time spot no lynel. i get attacked by some wolves, spend some time poking around collecting mushrooms, before i make my way to the back of the field and notice a pathway that appears to head up the mountain. once again invested and intrigued, i investigate. i spend somewhere in the realm of half an hour slowly fighting my way up the mountain, fending off the weird ice-spitting lizards i had never seen before, along with some frozen chuchus and icy bats. i expected something at the top. not too much, really i was just looking for a shrine and maybe a cool weapon. that’s what i had experienced elsewhere in the game thus far--make your way into a somewhat difficult area and you’ll find a shrine, it’s how the game worked. i finally reach the summit, breaking into some of my last reserves of spicy peppers, and first notice the text flash across the bottom of the screen--”spring of wisdom”--next i notice a goddess statue sitting serenely in a small pool of water. then my vision drifts upward
the last thing i spot is a giant, beautiful dragon: the spirit of wisdom, nayru, corrupted by ganon’s demonic influence, according to the voice of the goddess. the dragon is sick, and i need to save it. nothing i knew about the game could have prepared me for this. none of my limited legend of zelda lore knowledge included any mention of dragons, i certainly didn’t expect to see any in this game, but here one was, staring me in the face, tasking me with curing it so it may once again serve its role
words cannot encapsulate the feeling of sheer awe and amazement when, in the next section, i found myself climbing to the very top of the mountain to catch the dragon’s updraft so i could fly about it so i could drop down to shoot arrows at the evil eyes of ganon spotted along the beast in midair slow motion, the rush of excitement and, moreover, the pure beauty of the whole ordeal. it was at precisely at this moment that i thought “this is one of the greatest games of all time”. i can say with complete confidence that never before left me genuinely awestruck and breathless the same way that moment did. it was spectacular and already i’m mildly upset that i can’t experience it for the first time again
after cleansing the dragon i simply had to collect one of its scales and offer it to the goddess hylia to free the dragon once and for all. this revealed the shrine i had come to the top of the mountain for. i didn’t care. the game could’ve given me nothing more in compensation than the experience alone. that admixture of discovery, amazement, and unbridled beauty are something i believe that no media other than video games can deliver on, and this is the first time i’ve had them delivered in such an effective and affecting manner. breath of the wild is the game that i’ve been wanting to play for years

Great Sites to Go to in Colorado
Tumblr media
Colorado's second-biggest city has developed a heavenly standing, constantly acquiring a spot on the U.S. News Best Places to Live to the position. It's additionally notable for being a focal political and strict center point, yet over the recent years Colorado Springs has backed off on the strict way of talking, in any event, receiving a trace of the laid-back vibe that Colorado guests typically partner with Stone or Telluride (to encounter this side of the Colorado Springs region, head to close Manitou Springs). Fresh Tracks Transportation provides transportation services all over Colorado to tourists at affordable rates.
Why Travel To Telluride
The beginning of this Colorado town's extremely extraordinary name is obscure, however, there are two prevailing speculations. The first is that Telluride comes from "tellurium," the nonmetallic component (frequently connoting the presence of gold stores) that provoked such countless pioneers to advance toward the locale. In any case, numerous local people will disclose to you the name is only a simpler method of saying "to hellfire you ride" – an inventive clarification that features the executioner ski inclines that draw numerous a colder time of year traveler every year. This little ski town has for quite some time been a break for the rich and renowned, with top-of-the-line resorts like The Little Nell and Emissary Snowmass tricking celebs with the guarantee of sumptuous security. In any case, don't let the chance of sticker shock ward you off; all things being equal, you can counterbalance the significant expense of choice housing by basically partaking in your environmental elements. A portion of Aspen's most mainstream locales – like Maroon Ringers – come to us from Mother Earth, who doesn't charge admirers a penny.
Why Go To Rough Mountain Public Park
At approximately 265,000 sections of land, Rough Mountain Public Park isn't the country's biggest public park, nor is it the most-visited with around 4 million yearly guests (contrasted with the Extraordinary Smoky Mountains Public Park's in excess of 12 million guests). Yet, there is something absolutely supernatural about RMNP, which rises 14,259 feet into the Colorado sky at its most elevated point, Pikes Pinnacle. Powder dogs will discover 2,000 or more skiable sections of land ideal for tenderfoots, specialists, and everybody in the middle. "To hellfire, you ride" likewise alludes to the district's rambunctious climate. Occupants and guests the same consistently assemble around Park or Telluride's bars for a foot-stepping fun time. Eventually, it doesn't make any difference where the name comes from – all that truly tallies is the extraordinary experience you will undoubtedly have here.
At the point when it's an ideal opportunity to return to earth, or possibly down to a rise of 7,500 feet or thereabouts, guests can eat up some custom-made frozen yogurt, take a creepy visit through the Stanley Inn, or essentially wander through the superb town of Estes Park. In addition, adjoining Colorado problem areas – Rock and Denver – are each a short drive away.
To restrict the number of individuals visiting the recreation center, Rough Mountain Public Park carried out a planned passage framework that is in actuality through Oct. 11, 2021. Visit the Public Park Administration's site for extra data.
Why Visit Denver
The primary fascination is climbing the recreation center's 350-a few miles of trails that breeze through pine and tidy woodlands, sparkling high lakes, areas of wildflowers, and, in case you're fortunate, some elk or bighorn sheep. What's more, perhaps it's the more slender climate that goes to guests' heads, yet even the most boring report sensations of amazement and miracle following a little while of taking in that invigorating mountain air.
We're not saying you should give the chance to climb the Rockies' path or ski their inclines – simply that you shouldn't do as such without reserving a spot at a portion of Denver's diverse diners, investigating its exhibition halls, or testing a couple of its renowned blends. Working a portion of these more metropolitan temptations into your excursion will permit you to encounter the Denver that local people know and love. For a neighborhood's viewpoint, you might need to pursue a standout amongst other Denver visits.
People of Denver are considerably more laid-back than occupants of other significant American urban areas, advancing a functioning, outdoorsy culture that flourishes with great food and specialty lager. As far as winter wonderland status, not many objections can contrast with Aspen. This beautiful mountain town is straight out of a snow globe, highlighting pleasant mountain chalets embraced by the taking off Colorado Rockies. Obviously, the fundamental draw here is skiing and there are four head ski regions close by that oblige powder dogs, all things considered. Follow the city's inhabitants and go through your days in the Mile High City becoming more acquainted with its climbing ways, shopping roads, and brewery trails. As well as adoring nature, Denver's populace likewise shows enthusiasm for craftsmanship, culture, and food. In the event that The unstoppable force of life isn't your partner of decision, invest your energy meandering around the Denver Craftsmanship Exhibition hall or Larimer Square prior to getting a bin of Rough Mountain clams along with the Legislative center Slope area's Eatery Column. Furthermore, in the event that you end up having children close behind, you'll discover a lot of approaches to keep them engaged here, from a top-notch zoo to the intriguing part of the U.S. Mint.
Why Visit To Aspen
In any case, most guests don't come here to test the political and social talk – they come for the widely inclusive perspectives found at the highest point of Pikes Pinnacle, the transcending bluffs that make up the Nursery of the Divine beings and the reddening precipices at Red Stone Ravine.
However, there's a whole other world to Aspen than winter sports: With top-of-the-line shopping, entrancing exhibition halls, out-of-control displays, and fun celebrations, it very well may be a battle to make it to the slants. Regardless of how you decide to invest your energy here, it will be a getaway you'll always remember.
Numerous explorers consider Denver to be bouncing off point for a Rough Mountain escape, utilizing the Colorado capital for its air terminal and that's it. However, those people are passing up a great opportunity: The Mile High City offers a blend of metropolitan energy and regular environmental elements that other American urban areas can merely fantasize about. For a very long while at this point, this town has been the jewel in the Thundering Fork Valley, and we're not simply talking allegorically.
Why Travel To Breckenridge
Gotten comfortable 1859, Breckenridge holds a similar Victorian-time engagement it did during the stature of the gold rush. Its sensible and well-disposed environment has additionally persevered through its change from a silver-and gold-mining town to one of the country's most darling skiing objections. Additionally, Breck – as it's called by local people – is a fast drive from other famous Colorado objections, including Vail, which is 40 miles northwest, and Denver, which is 80 miles upper east.
Cold weather days in Breck are characterized by runs on the Tenmile Territory and evenings spent refueling at downtown cafĂ©s and bars – also an assortment of the bottling works and surprisingly a refinery. In the mid-year, winter sports are supplanted with climbing and cycling. In any case, regardless of the period, the greatness of a Breckenridge dusk and ritzy night sky is a marvel to see – and worth returning to a seemingly endless amount of a large number of years.
Why Go To Vail
Try not to allow Vail's little to measure or distant area fool you: This is quite possibly the most cherished chilly climate objection in the country for one explanation: skiing. Colorado Springs is likewise home organizations, for example, the Flying corps Institute and the Olympic and Paralympic Preparing Center. Also, throughout the long term, it's gotten a cross-segment of characters. Rampage and offer the walkways with maturing politicos, youthful families, workmanship darlings and that's just the beginning: All have a special interest in this part of America the Delightful.
Sandwiched between the Blood Mountain Reach toward the north and the Sawatch Mountain Reach toward the south, this thin valley is home to a few outstanding ski regions, including one of the country's biggest single-mountain resorts. Spiked pinnacles, miles of inclines, and amazing powder draw in the huge number of guests consistently, procuring Vail a vital spot among Colorado's other winter heavyweights, Aspen and Telluride. Truth be told, Vail's expertly manicured slants – just as its lavish lodgings, spas, and eateries – as often as possible invite Superstars like Will Smith, Cameron Diaz, and Justin Timberlake.
That being said, this is a hard city for those on a careful spending plan. The dazzling view is joined by bank-busting inn rates and lift tickets. The best way to keep away from these costs is to avoid the slants, however, that isn't really something terrible. Visit throughout the late spring and you'll find an assortment of approaches to partake in the mountains, from climbing and trekking to horseback riding and even whitewater boating.
Why Should You Visit Colorado Springs
It's not difficult to perceive any reason why Katharine Lee Bates was roused to compose the verses to the renowned energetic anthem "America the Delightful" from Colorado Springs. Glance in one area and you'll see the glorious "purple mountains:" the Colorado Rockies. Shift your eyes the other way to end up looking out at "golden floods of grain:" the Incomparable Fields. The lovely landscape isn't the lone motivation to go to this enchanting town. Colorado's grand landscape draws a large number of voyagers hoping to get cleared up in its regular quality. With a gathering of urban communities and towns, each with its own novel outside contributions, social attractions, and general Colorado enchant, it very well might be hard to pick the best spot for your next excursion. U.S. News considered various elements, including the assortment of attractions, just as the assessments of specialists and voyagers, to decide the best places to visit in Colorado. Have a top choice? Cast your vote beneath to help decide the following year's rundown.

By Michael Lanza
We step into the ankle-deep North Fork of the Virgin River, in the backcountry of Zion National Park, and water at refrigerator temperature immediately fills our boots. Until sometime tomorrow afternoon, we’ll walk in this river almost constantly, crossing it dozens of times—with the 50° F water, at its deepest, coming up nearly to our waists. As we splash downstream, the canyon walls of golden, crimson, and cream-colored sandstone steadily creep inward and stretch higher, soon eclipsing the sun. We’ll see very little direct sunlight as the sheer walls of Zion’s Narrows eventually tower a thousand feet overhead and, at times, close in to the width of a hobbit’s living room.
Drinking in the scenery, I’m feeling a surreal sense of luck just to be in this place, considering that, for various reasons, it has taken my friend David Gordon and I a few decades to finally get here—and the fact that it’s sunny and warm in November as we set out on one of the most uniquely beautiful and sought-after backpacking trips in the entire National Park System.
The Narrows is the roughly 14 miles of the North Fork’s canyon upstream from where the road in Zion Canyon ends at the Temple of Sinawava. Enormously popular, the lower end of the Narrows teems with hundreds and sometimes thousands of dayhikers on hot days of late spring and summer, when the river is warm and low. Many of those people don’t go beyond the first mile or two of the Narrows, while some hike as far as Big Spring, five miles upriver, the farthest point you’re allowed to venture without a wilderness permit.
Backpacking the Narrows from top to bottom—16 miles from the Chamberlain’s Ranch trailhead to the Temple of Sinawava trailhead—requires a permit that’s very hard to get, whether you try to reserve a campsite in advance (they get scooped up as soon as they become available) or try to get a permit on a walk-in basis no more than a day in advance of starting the two-day trip.
Click here now to get my e-guide The Complete Guide to Backpacking Zion’s Narrows.
David Gordon on day one backpacking the Narrows, Zion National Park.
But there’s one other way of snagging a permit—perhaps the easiest, given the towering hurdles of the other two methods, though it does involve pure luck. The park holds a Last Minute Drawing for unreserved campsites between seven and two days prior to the date you’d like to start. (See Permit info in the Make It Happen section at the bottom of this story.) When I saw an unusually warm, sunny forecast for the first week of November—not a high-demand time for Zion permits—I grabbed two of the most-coveted wilderness permits in the National Park System through the Last Minute Drawing: backpacking the Narrows top to bottom, and dayhiking Zion’s Subway top to bottom. (Read my story “Luck of the Draw, Part 1: Hiking Zion’s Subway.”)
David and I have both had backpacking Zion’s Narrows in our sights literally for decades. But for various reasons—including the short season and stiff competition for permits for both—it has taken us this long to get to them. Now, thanks to watching the forecast, good timing, flexibility in our schedules, and sheer luck, we are spending three straight November days of temperatures in the 60s knocking off two of the best hikes in America—the Subway and the Narrows—and seeing relatively few people, a situation unheard-of during the peak seasons.
After the Narrows, hike the other nine of my “10 Best Backpacking Trips in the Southwest.”

  The Narrows Day One
By mid-afternoon, a few hours into the hike, the only evidence of sunshine that we see is where it sets fire to the upper canyon walls, a few hundred feet above us. Down in the canyon’s basement, we walk in the shadows of a premature, extended dusk.
Here in the upper Narrows, several miles above its confluence with Deep Creek, which triples the river’s volume, the North Fork of the Virgin River meanders through adolescence, a skinny but energetic stream—at least during times of low water levels, which is when park officials open the Narrows to hikers. (See the Make It Happen section at the bottom of this story for details about safe river levels for hiking.) We’re still above the true “narrows” stretch of the canyon; pine trees grow sparsely along the river, like thin hair on an old man’s head, and the rims wear a green crown.
Day one in the upper Narrows, Zion National Park.
Black water streaks bleed down blood-red walls smeared with spilled-paint splotches of white rock. At sharp riverbends, where flash floods and high water have done the destructive work of erosion, cliffs crest overhead in petrified waves.
Our canyoneering boots and neoprene socks do not keep our feet warm so much as prevent them from getting painfully cold; I wouldn’t do this hike without them, except perhaps in really hot weather. We’re also carrying dry suits in our packs for the deeper water we’ll encounter later today and tomorrow. Here, we don’t need them yet for water that rarely tops our ankles. (See details on gear at the bottom of this story.)
Eons of geological uplift and the erosional force of the river carving into the Navajo Sandstone created the Narrows. Floods continue that eternal work. The Narrows and many other similarly tight canyons can transform from placid to deadly in a span of minutes—which is why you should avoid them if there’s any chance of rain. A flash flood in 1998 abruptly raised the Virgin River’s volume from 200 to 4,500 CFS (cubic feet per second), acting like a giant, high-speed plow coursing downstream, damaging the park road in Zion Canyon. On Sept. 15, 2015, seven people descending a slot known as Keyhole Canyon were killed in a flash flood in the worst disaster in the history of Zion National Park.
By late afternoon, we reach the beginning of the true “narrows” section. The walls pinch down to 15 to 20 feet apart and shoot up several hundred feet. For the rest of this day, we’ll wade water that comes up to our calves—and briefly higher—through a dark, cool, and church-quiet hallway in solid rock, with only a sliver of sky visible high above us.
We hear the North Fork Falls well before we see it. At 8.5 miles from the trailhead, the river pours thunderously over a 10-foot-tall, boulder-and-log jam. To bypass it, we squeeze through a claustrophobic passage on the south side of the waterfall, between a massive boulder and the canyon wall, and then wade a short distance back upstream to see the waterfall.
I can help you plan this or any other trip you read about at my blog. Find out more here.
David Gordon on day one backpacking Zion’s Narrows.
Minutes beyond the North Fork Falls, we clamber over a log pinned between the close walls and lower ourselves into the deepest pool of the day. The numbing water rises crotch-deep on me; I wade across it as quickly as I can propel myself forward into shallower water. Around the corner, we reach our home for the night, campsite one, the first of a dozen designated campsites in the Narrows. (This campsite made my top 25 all-time favorite backcountry campsites, and I grouped the 11 other sites in the Narrows together as one on my list of the 15 nicest backcountry campsites I’ve hiked past.)
Our camp sits on a slightly elevated patch of dry ground, on one side of a cavernous opening where a tributary canyon joins the North Fork. Within an hour, by 6 p.m., it’s completely dark. With no moon out yet, stars riddle the Y-shaped slice of sky visible to us above this confluence of two canyons.
After dark, a mouse skitters around our site, obviously accustomed to pilfering food from backpackers. As David sits on a log enjoying the quiet and the stars, he feels the mouse crawling up his pant leg and kicks it off. With the forecast for clear weather, we didn’t bring a tent; we lay our pads and bags on the comfortable bed of soft, dry sand. But a few times during the night, I feel the mouse crawling up the outside of my bag and kick a leg out to send it airborne.
See my “10 Tips For Getting a Hard-to-Get National Park Backcountry Permit.”
The Narrows Day Two
In the morning, we awaken to a clear sky—what we can see of it, anyway. At the bottom of this deep hole, beneath close walls that dwarf skyscrapers, we remain in deep shadow. A breeze blowing down canyon sharpens the knife-like chill in the air, as the temperature sits in the high 30s Fahrenheit. The forecast had called for lows in the 20s, so we’re lucky on that count. But “lucky” isn’t the word I mutter while tugging my wet, stiff, half-frozen neoprene socks and boots on over my feet and taking my shocking first steps back into the 50-degree river.
Before long, though, the air temperature starts rising and our feet warm up as blood finally seeps back into them—even as we’re constantly crossing the ankle- to calf-deep river. I shed two of the three shirts I’m wearing and my wind shell, and roll the top of my dry suit down to my waist, thinking: It’s November, and I’m hiking in shirtsleeves.

Low-angle sunlight gradually infiltrates the canyon. Some walls catch indirect light reflecting off other walls, making them appear to glow. At every turn, the cliffs display a different face, a complex mosaic of curves, cracks, columns, pinnacles, and buttresses in a rich geological color palette. Mature trees lend the green of conifers and, at this time of year, the yellow of cottonwood trees.
High above us, the wind blows clouds of dust off ledges, and the sun backlighting the tiny dust particles makes them sparkle as they float earthward. “Pixie dust,” I tell David. Moments later, a gust hurls leaves off the rims hundreds of feet overhead, creating an identical effect, the leaves twinkling in the sunlight as they float downward.
An hour out of camp, below campsite four, we see the first people we’ve encountered since we started hiking from Chamberlain’s Ranch yesterday—two backpackers who remain ahead of us and mostly out of sight.
. . .
  Tell me what you think.
I spent a lot of time writing this story, so if you enjoyed it, please consider giving it a share using one of the buttons at right, and leave a comment or question at the bottom of this story. I’d really appreciate it.

101 things to love about Atlanta
Tumblr media
A love letter to a city of many nicknames—just don’t call it Hotlanta
Unlike other American metropolises, it’s sometimes hard to determine exactly what Atlanta is, especially for outsiders or so many newcomers. Is it a business-friendly, big-hearted, mild-weather region that’s six times more populated than it was 50 years ago? Yes, Atlanta is that. A cradle for some of the most influential music—particularly hip-hop and rap—of the past three decades? Yep, that too. A burgeoning foodie wonderland? A southeastern mecca for the production of television and Hollywood blockbusters? A pastiche of gloriously unique, provincial villages masquerading as official neighborhoods? A cultural frontrunner and cautionary tale? Global magnet of opportunity? Still kind of a mess—but lovably so?
Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, and that’s right, y’all.
So maybe that’s what’s special about Atlanta: It’s not yet finished, and never one-note. Rather, it’s a Brunswick stew of varying allures. It’s amorphous, restless, unwed to the past, intoxicated by its own prospects. Very little is sacred here but change, and instigators are more than welcome. Atlanta doesn’t know what it is yet, or exactly where it’s going, but it’s having a damn good time getting there. Let’s celebrate what’s great here, right now.
Tumblr media
1. Inclusivity. The economic and cultural heart of the Deep South isn’t just accustomed to being diverse, it’s proud of it. See virtually any public gathering place intown for proof that humanity can peacefully coexist—and that Atlanta still has better things to do than hate.
2. Sky-high architecture. From the emerald towers of Sandy Springs’s King and Queen to the Georgia Pacific Tower’s illuminated stairsteps, the skyline is among America’s most underappreciated, especially at night. It’s not contiguous yet, with large gaps between poky clusters from most angles, but it’s distinctive and bold. And oh how it glows.
3. Easy-breezy climes. Sure, summer’s hotter’n’ Hades. But there’s Christmas shopping in flip-flops (sometimes), T-shirt weekends in January (occasionally), and bloomy early February (without fail).
4. After Hours at Waffle House: The 20-minute wait at 3:17 a.m. is plenty of time for random singing with other scatterbrained, post-bar strangers in line.
5. The prevalence of nature. Cicadas. And barn owls. Talking. At night. Among the giant urban oaks, in July.
6. Festival-a-palooza. Neighborhoods across the city have unbridled, borderline incomprehensible enthusiasm for getting together. Random gatherings invented on Facebook (looking at you, Lanta Gras) have ballooned into huge annual traditions with street closures and parades.
7. Bezos who? Amazon didn’t choose Atlanta, and Atlanta cared for five minutes.
8. It’s almost never hard to find a seat on public transit.
9. Kid-friendly. Little children growing up in Atlanta tend to think it’s amazing. That’s an impression bolstered by innumerable playgrounds and ubiquitous King of Pops, those delectable, homegrown frozen staples.
10. Random celebrity encounters. Like that time when AndrĂ© 3000 was shopping alone at the DeKalb Farmers Market, sans entourage, near the seafood section, all cool in his army jacket despite the July swelter and crush of onlookers, not too busy or highfalutin to shake everybody’s hand.
11. Yes, $100,000-something condos are prevalent—still—in desirable places across Atlanta. Many aren’t shoeboxes, either. And some count incredible views, particularly of central Midtown or downtown’s oldest streets.
12. Tech hub. Because Georgia Tech is a factory of coveted IT brainpower that’s more essential to the city’s business climate each year.
13. Westside escape. With its bridges, creekside vistas, and smooth, snaking pavement, the Proctor Creek Greenway trail is already otherworldly, in the best, most bucolic way. And it’s just a fraction of what it stands to be in coming years.
14. Long live the Clermont. A few years ago, neighbors were preparing to fight to save a local strip club from its new owners. It was a false alarm—the new owners view the Clermont as an asset. But that’s Atlanta.
15. Where it’s greater. With its transit connectivity, celebrated food scene, walkability, and perennial ranking as Georgia’s best place to live, Decatur gets it.
16. World’s busiest hub. With flights seemingly every minute from early morning until the wee night-time hours, the Atlanta airport is a stressful but handy launchpad of convenience, with a ridiculous wealth of nonstop flights to basically everywhere (hello, Dubai and Johannesburg). We’ll forgive a MARTA train derailment, that famous power outage, and perpetual TSA clogs.
17. Expats welcome. Because almost nobody on your street is actually from Atlanta, and that’s so normal it usually doesn’t even register. A common greeting for new neighbors: “So, where ya from?”
18. Can’t-miss Cascade. Especially in autumn, SW ATL’s Cascade Springs Nature Preserve offers ITP serenity to the fullest. Meander through 120 acres of trails, climb Civil War-era ruins, hop across a waterfall’s rocks. It’ll make even the most overstressed office dweller feel something akin to childhood awe.
19. Walkability. It’s getting vastly
better, in many places, from densifying EAV to the growing shopping avenues of central Buckhead. It’s happening, albeit slowly.
20. But... Atlanta’s still a major city where driving conveniences are largely possible, and lugging groceries on trains and such isn’t always an everyday hassle. Rush hours, however, are always plural, and Saturday traffic is, unfortunately, no joke anymore.
21. Trees of green. Friends flying in for the first time might say, “All I saw were trees—and then we landed.” A high compliment.
Tumblr media
Curbed Atlanta
Atlanta’s canopy with the Buckhead business district at left, and Midtown/downtown at right.
22. Playspace. The restored, climbable treasure that is Noguchi Playscapes, the famed landscape architect’s work in Piedmont Park, was the only U.S. playground he completed in his lifetime.
23. Bungalows. The quintessential intown homes. Built to last, forever in vogue, and usually affixed with that most Atlanta of residential features: the generous porch.
24. Bearings Bike Shop. The community-focused nonprofit is teaching kids the value of hard work, the joy of exercise, and the viability of traversing a car-crazed city on two wheels.
25. Late-night stalwart. MJQ is a longstanding and culturally important club that welcomes anybody and everybody down into the rollicking, subterranean bowels of a former blues club. Chicago House in one room, a Whitney Houston singalong in the next.
26. Adios, Bravos. The pro baseball team left town for the monied ’burbs—and might very well have done Atlanta a favor (unless you operated front-yard parking lots). Nearby Georgia Avenue’s rebirth could show how large-scale adaptive reuse, married with new construction, can be a smartly executed replacement for storefront vacancies and so much stadium asphalt. Changes of this magnitude don’t come without gentrification fears, of course. But rows of beautiful, vacant old buildings—which could’ve doubled as a post-apocalyptic Main Street before, but are under renovation now—were doing Atlanta no favors.
27. The mother of all porch parties. Three cheers for the grassroots explosion of Oakhurst Porchfest. Founded in 2015, the autumn musical extravaganza counts 200-plus acts now, performing wherever volunteers offer their porches as stages. It’s community unification through music at its finest.
28. High Museum. The Southeast’s preeminent showcase for contemporary and classical art, housed in buildings designed by Renzo Piano and Richard Meier, is free for locals on the second Sunday of each month. How’s that for accessibility?
29. Viewrific, Part I. The approach from Douglasville on Interstate 20, over that hill, in fading evening light, the Land of Oz.
30. One of television’s best shows needed no other name than our city’s.
Tumblr media
31. Georgia Aquarium’s bucket-list essential. For about the price of a car tire, you can swim with whale sharks downtown. And if you’re lucky, they’ll inadvertently bump you, with all the gentle power of a city bus in slow motion.
32. Curated graffiti. Running along the northern borders of Cabbagetown and Reynoldstown, Wylie Street is an ever-changing urban museum of eye-popping street murals, with a dash of biting social commentary.
33. Atlanta is where misfit street characters become local legends. Here’s looking at you, Baton Bob. And where art thou, Bicycle Shorts Man?
34. The Dungeon house in Lakewood Heights. Birthplace of OutKast, it was recently purchased by Big Boi. Hootie Hoo!
35. The Atlanta Beltline. Despite affordability challenges directly caused by the now-famous Beltline, the popular segments are socially magical, unifying things—Atlanta’s boardwalk, the Little Peachtree—and it’s barely reached adolescence at this point. Maybe one day, instead of sprawl and traffic, a mention of Atlanta anywhere in the world will conjure images of this mythical green loop. All dreamed up by a local college kid.
36. Sylvan Hills. The historic nabe between downtown and the airport is the prettiest neighborhood that half of Atlanta’s never heard of.
37. Scooter culture. Having spawned across the city in a year, the vehicles can be annoying, unsightly, and even dangerous for pedestrians and bicyclists. But the two-wheel zeitgeist beats all those lawbreaking riders driving alone in 4,000-pound street cloggers, right?
38. Raising the bar. Rooftop restaurants and bars have multiplied tenfold (roughly) in recent years, highlighted by Ponce City Market’s vintage amusement park in the sky and Hotel Clermont’s unpretentious new hang. About time.
39. Our iconic downtown library is by Marcel Breuer, someone cooler than Carnegie.
40. Path Force. The Beltline’s roving, specialized, applaudable police squad is consistently effective. Despite millions of visitors to the trails, the number of annual crime incidents can sometimes be counted on one hand.
41. John Portman. The late architect’s simple idea born in downtown Atlanta—the inner high-rise atrium, designed to cheaply cool low-income buildings—revolutionized hotel design around the world.
42. A growing legacy of rather badass sports statues. There’s Hank Aaron swinging through his record homer, shredded Evander Holyfield (currently MIA), sculptural Olympics remnants, Dominique Wilkins in mid-dunk, and that incredible Falcons sculpture.
43. Viewrific, Part II. The downtown skyline from that stoplight, facing west, where Freedom Parkway meets Boulevard. It’s the famed Jackson Street Bridge vantage point, immortalized in The Walking Dead Season 1 poster, panned out.
44. Park potential. Bellwood Quarry’s green space initiative could finally bring that side of town the Piedmont Park it deserves.
45. Commercial survivors. Poncey-Highland throwback DVD rental spot Videodrome and dive-bar stalwart Righteous Room are here to stay forever! Probably.
46. Road trips galore. From Atlanta, there’s a wealth of geographically and culturally diverse long-weekend options in all directions. Asheville, Savannah, the Gulf Coast, Charleston, Blue Ridge, Jekyll Island, Nashville, Charlotte, and the list goes on. Leave at lunch on Friday and reach them all by happy hour.
47. Church Bar on Edgewood. Before it was a tourist destination, the beloved Edgewood Avenue watering hole was just an unholy alliance of irreverent art, ping-pong, sangria, and a male former church deacon named Sister Louisa.
48. Atlanta United. In just its third year now, the club has scored a Major League Soccer championship and global headlines that declare this city, for once, an exemplar of fandom.
49. They don’t make ’em like Whittier Mill Village anymore. The semi-secret old cotton mill community includes 1800s homes, beautiful ruins, and Buckhead schools.
50. We took Snowpocalypse jokes—and are still taking them—in stride. Two inches of daytime snow paralyzed a major city, but hey, we made the front page of the New York Times! And inspired the creation of an SNL Weekend Update character called Buford Calloway, a “survivor.”
51. Lemony pepper wings. Order dry, with a little tub of hot sauce on the side. Graze the wing across blue cheese, and then dunk in the sauce. Bite big. And behold caloric Eden.
52. Bank of America Plaza. The world’s largest cigarette just happens to be the Southeast’s tallest building—and the ATL’s Eiffel Tower. (Sorry, Big Chicken.)
53. Purposeful art. With poignant murals, impressive permanent pieces, and a civil rights installation series where historical events actually happened, the Beltline’s Westside Trail artwork is stepping up the game. Ditto for the Eastside’s series, and William Massey’s awe-inspiring pieces made of garbage found on streets.
54. Viewrific, Part III. Sure, the ginormous chiseled Confederates are awkward at best, and embarrassing at worst. But evenings and sunrises atop Stone Mountain are religious experiences (literally, every Easter, with church services). Up there, find unparalleled vistas of so much rippling green, cast pink, with the glint of skyscrapers in the middle distance.
55. Adair Park. Blight and disinvestment didn’t diminish the beautiful old bones of this historic place.
56. The Atlanta Tech Village in Buckhead is the real deal. A tech hub that’s spawned big local companies—and a lot of cushy salaries.
57. Car-free lifestyles no longer seem crazy. Alternate transportation commuters are becoming more prevalent by the year—and proving that living without a car (gasp!) is possible in Atlanta. (See: the saddlebags and backpacks accessorizing business attire along the Freedom Park PATH Trail during weekday rush hours.)
58. No shortage of swingin’ highrise pools. It’s like a subculture unto itself, from late April to September.
59. We have the Southeast’s largest burial ground, and it’s beautiful. More than 100,000 people have been laid to eternal rest across Westview Cemetery’s 600 acres, which is centered around a gorgeously ornate mausoleum and chapel.
60. Lest we forget Oakland Cemetery. Atlanta’s oldest public green space is a historical, durable, accessible intown treasure that really knows how to party. For proof, see the long-running, multistage Tunes From the Tombs festival.
Tumblr media
61. The National Center for Civil and Human Rights is > the NASCAR Museum that Atlanta “lost” to Charlotte.
62. Pittsburgh Yards. This southside Beltline redevelopment is centered on the creation of jobs in underserved places—instead of $3,000 apartments and $13.50 bespoke kale bowls—and it could be a game changer.
63. Buckhead’s tallest building, the Sovereign tower, still stands out, architecturally. And it could soon have a big blue modernist sibling.
64. Venturing OTP won’t actually kill you. Resurrected and richly historic downtowns are in abundance in the Atlanta suburbs. Like, everywhere. Find a half-dozen worthwhile day-trip destinations in Gwinnett alone.
65. The Atlanta splash pad, a social oasis and absolute godsend. And even better: More splash pads are in the works, from Vine City (definitely) to Chosewood Park (probably) and Kirkwood (maybe). About damn time, say toddlers across Atlanta.
66. Queer culture is thriving. That’s epitomized by Atlanta Pride, which is more massive than ever after almost 50 years (and now family-friendly, for better or worse).
67. English Avenue’s Mattie Freeland Park. Founded and controlled by neighbors, the tiny green space is a shining example of small but vital civic strides in historically troubled places.
68. The Chattahoochee River. A revived and unspoiled (if underused) resource for every season.
69. Insert here: A non-cheesy, non-obvious, pithy ode to the Varsity, that legendary fast-food drive-in—still the world’s largest after 90 years. Don’t mention “What’ll ya have?” Ah, never mind.
70. Music Midtown. For all its faults (overcrowding, lawn damage, neighbor inconvenience, lineups geared toward teens), the reborn multistage extravaganza is a dynamic and diverse musical showcase every September. Walk barefoot across lush Bermuda and dance like only 75,000 people are watching.
71. Ted Turner’s legacy. The media maverick and early Atlanta believer has been called an inspiration by people as disparate as Ted Koppel and Killer Mike.
72. The reinvigorated cyclorama. Once bedraggled, the restored cyclorama—one of America’s largest historical artifacts—is now in good hands, presented in a state-of-the-art showcase at the Atlanta History Center. That’s where it’ll be until infants of today are septuagenarians. At least.
73. Almost every Atlantan has some tale about the cast or production of The Hunger Games, The Walking Dead, Stranger Things, Baby Driver, etc. And hundreds of us have rented our homes for movie and TV shoots. Cha-ching.
74. Atlanta Streets Alive. The occasional street-closure sensation (with attendance routinely north of 120,000) illustrates a dream scenario, in terms of biking/pedestrian infrastructure and how cities of the future could yield to people over automobiles.
75. Inspiring architecture—seriously. In a few too-rare cases, large-scale design is getting quite interesting. Find several forthcoming examples on Howell Mill Road alone. And approach the Jenga-d facade of Midtown’s new lilli tower from any angle at twilight.
76. The Beltline’s Northside Trail. It’s a tucked-away, leafy, unsung jewel—with a rail bridge underpass that could stand as a top Beltline highlight forever.
77. Relaxed ganja laws in the City of Atlanta. Anyone caught with a bag of pot in the city can face—worst case—a $75 fine now. But even that’s left to the officer’s discretion. And judging by the pungent wafts from innumerable cars and so many porches, the memo on that was widely read among intowners.
78. The Goat Farm! Westside ruins turned artist hive. Now don’t let redevelopment gut its inimitable soul!
79. Where the expressions “Y’all!” and “Yo!” coexist harmoniously—and sometimes come from the same mouth.
80. Inman Park Festival. A late-April tradition for almost half a century, this fest is Atlanta’s greatest neighborhood showcase. It’s proof that even prestigious places need not take themselves too seriously.
81. These directions make sense in Atlanta-ese: “Head up the Connector, around the Grady Curve, beyond the Brookwood Split, past Spaghetti Junction, barely OTP, and then
”
82. Record shops keep it spinning. From the hippest gritty neighborhoods to the far-flung ’burbs, ATL vinyl is alive and well.
83. The original Lantern Parade. A luminous Atlanta Beltline tradition—now 70,000 strong—unlike any other.
84. Moonlight drives. The city’s nonsensical roadway design actually makes for more interesting (if impractical) drives, once you know where the hell you’re going. For a test run, take Ponce from the Majestic Diner to Decatur, late at night, windows down.
85. Because the Atlanta Hawks stayed put, right in the city’s heart. And now they’re trending like the team of the future.
86. Ansley Park. With its dizzying array of residential masterworks and unique country-club-under-skyscrapers vibe, this is aspirational living done right. Leafy and hilly at every turn, the neighborhood’s bounty of walkable green space options is almost unfair.
87. Those wondrous, weird accumulations of snow. About six times per decade, there’s a legit, if short-lived, snowfall. Added bonus: The city’s streets and parks are perfectly angled for sledding, for those rare Atlantans who actually own sleds or don’t mind embarrassing themselves on greased cookie sheets.
88. Midtown’s unyielding boom. Crane-watching (and counting) has become a pastime in Midtown. It’s the epicenter of intown’s metamorphosis, where soul-sucking surface parking lots go to die.
Tumblr media
Curbed Atlanta
Midtown in summertime, as seen over Piedmont Park.
89. The “Atlanta’s Population Now” sign on Peachtree Road. Long a source of pride and bewilderment for this once modestly sized Southern town, the electronic metro population counter in front of the Darlington Apartments is climbing ever closer to 7 million. Fun fact: It was installed by a young billboard mogul named Ted Turner in the 1960s, when the metro’s population was about 1.1 million.
90. The potential of South Downtown. For far too long, Atlanta’s oldest, most captivatingly vintage streets have been forsaken by most investors, residents, visitors, and anyone else not headed to Magic City, a Falcons game, or the Gold Dome. Whether the trifecta of ambitious plans for the Gulch, Underground Atlanta, and Newport’s extensive portfolio can spring the district to greatness remains to be seen.
91. Castleberry Hill. Atlanta’s epicenter of authentic loft living and bohemian art galleries is also cool enough for a 2 Chainz restaurant.
92. The food. It ain’t all pulled pork, buttermilk chicken, and Frosty Oranges ’round here anymore. From Buford Highway’s international fare to Decatur’s award-winning menus and classic eateries like Busy Bee Cafe, you could live in Atlanta a decade and not sample all its eclectic deliciousness. “This year cemented the Capital City of the South’s status as a culinary force,” wrote Zagat in 2017, declaring the ATL the nation’s ninth “most exciting” food city.
93. Pre-dogwood hoopla. A sunny March weekend in Piedmont Park is like a city festival organized by the citizenry, with plenty of flying frisbees and open-container good vibes.
94. Palm trees. So what if they’re not native to Atlanta? Neither are you (probably). Some varieties really thrive here, punctuating front yards and restaurant landscapes in these subtropical climes.
95. The Fabulous Fox. It’s the site of Prince’s final concert and, when the wrecking ball loomed, legendary 1970s preservation efforts led by bands like Lynyrd Skynyrd. The glittering Fox Theatre is an Atlanta showplace like no other.
96. Viewrific, Finale. Southbound on Peachtree Road, just past Jesus Junction, that downhill vantage point captures something like a scene from the movie Metropolis, only framed by towering pines.
97. Pollen preparedness. A real downside of Atlanta’s otherwise glorious, floral springs are the swirling particles so thick they turn black cars yellow. Or streets into yellow-tinged rivers when it rains. Luckily, ATLiens aren’t fazed, popping non-drowsy Claritin, minding pollen counts on the news, or—in some cases—strapping on SARS-style masks.
98. Local beer. Suddenly, it’s everywhere! A hundred varieties not named SweetWater.
99. That being said
a frosty glass, a SweetWater 420 on draft, a Saturday afternoon in May, counting passersby from a lively patio bar, and somebody, somewhere, just started strumming an acoustic guitar.
100. We’re not “Marthasville,” thank God. (One of this settlement’s original names.)
101. Still welcoming after all these damn carpetbaggers.

Tumblr media
It was a normal Saturday morning.
They had woken up, Bucky had tried to convince Steve to sleep in and Steve had refused. Bucky had sighed, getting up. Then they had gone out to do their usual run, which was accompanied by Sam. They had exclaimed “on your left/right” whenever they outran the Falcon. Bucky always did by the right, though as soon as Sam was left behind, he would run by Steve’s left. He always was on Steve’s left, due to the blonde’s bad right ear before the serum. Old habits die hard. They had returned to their Brooklyn apartment, where they had taken a shower, together.
Then, grocery store. The same one their mothers used to go when they were children and would accompany them to help them with the bags.
“What’s missing?” Steve asked, as he placed four jars of milk into the cart already almost full. Two supersoldier demanded quite a huge amount of food after all.
Bucky retrieved the piece of paper they had scribbled on the past few days from his pocket and raised the piece of paper they had scribbled on during the past couple days. “Chocolate, eggs, orange juice, and plums.”
Steve scrunched his eyebrows. “We still got plums,” he said, confused.
“Doesn’t matter.” Bucky shrugged and started rolling the cart to the fruits section.
Steve caught up with him, smiling and shaking his head at the same time.
“I’ll get the eggs and orange juice then.”
Bucky nodded. Although he didn’t feel comfortable in public places and felt even worse if Steve wasn’t with him, he knew Steve would be just down the corridor from him. Bucky couldn’t help but keep glancing over to the blonde man while picking plums from the pile.
“Are you Bucky?”
Of course Bucky had trailed every soul around Steve, around the possible objects that could be used to hurt him and three escape routes to lead Steve to safety. Of course he cared about Steve and knew everything that happened around him in a radius of six feet. And of course he didn’t notice the little girl who sneaked behind himself.
Bucky looked down and was faced a four-year-old girl. She wore a Captain America skirt, had a plush bear in her tiny arms and a smile on her face. She tried again. “Sir? Are you Bucky Barnes?”
It was actually incredible that no matter how well they tried to blend in, children always recognized them. Two jackets and a baseball cap, his long hair hiding his face and a leather glove on his metal hand, the little girl managed to spot him.
Bucky, tense as he could be, answered very quietly, “Yes.”
The smile on the girl’s face became ginormous, Bucky tried his best to return it. “You’re my favorite superhero, you know.”
Bucky almost took a step back, awestruck by her words. “Your favorite
” he couldn’t get himself to say the word. The word didn’t seem to match his persona. He was part of the Avengers now, yes, but to be called a -
“Superhero,” she finished, beaming. “Here, look,” she showed him the bear in her arms.
A Bucky Bear a bit modified. The ones he knew were from the Captain America comics that portrayed him as Steve’s teenager sidekick – completely ignoring the fact that he older than Steve -, with the bright blue and red uniform and black mask. This one wore black clothing and his left arm was grey – to look like metal – with a red star on the shoulder. The black mask that covered the eyes was the same in both versions though.
“That’s you,” she explained, running her fingers on the bear’s head softly. “I know you can’t protect everyone all the time, but I have Lil’ Bucky with me all the time. He keeps me safe.”
Bucky cleared his throat, crouched on his knees and managed a small smile, willing his voice to remain steady despite how unsure of the situation he was. “I know he does,” he said, trying to remember how to talk to a child. Memories of his younger siblings came to his mind. He hesitated before he opened his mouth again, but the girl didn’t seem to mind. “I told him to protect you.”
She gasped, her eyes wide. “My papa told me you did!” she claimed.
“Is he doing a good job?” he inquired, an eyebrow raised, trying to keep his voice steady. He felt like he would say the wrong thing anytime.
“He is!”
“Is he? That’s good,” he concealed, nodding and smiling a bit more. Bucky couldn’t help but be worried about the girl. She reminded him of his sisters. She had approached him alone, but she was too young to actually be by herself inn a grocery store. “Talking about your father, where is he?”
“He’s fighting a war,” she continued, “He’s a soldier like you.” She looked at the bear again, petting between its ears softly. Then she beamed again. “He got me Lil’ Bucky. My mother and my brother need protection, and Bucky and I will keep them safe!”
“I’m sure you will. Your mother and your brother, where are they?”
The girl looked panicked for a moment and Bucky quickly localized two staff members to help him find the girl’s mother. That wasn’t necessary though. The girl turned and her eyes quickly found them. She pointed at a woman with a little boy by her, “There they are!”
A boy came stumbling over to stand beside the girl. They were clearly twins. “This is the brother Bucky and I keep safe. Jefferson, say ‘hello’.”
“You’re doing an amazing job,” he promised her, coaxing a smile from her. “Hello, Jefferson.”
The boy was quiet, his gaze focused on Bucky. He knew who he was, he knew what he did. He also knew who the Winter Soldier was. And he was scared. He clung to his sister’s side, trying to vanish from sight.
Steve then turned to his boyfriend, about ten meters from him. Only then noticing he was crouched down by two children. Steve furrowed his eyebrows but his eyes shot open when he heard the boy’s mumbled question.
“Will you harm us?”
The blond supersoldier’s body came back to life upon seeing the shock and hurt in Bucky’s face. Steve darted to them, but before he could actually reach them Bucky spoke.
“No,” he said, “You’re afraid of me?” Bucky quietly asked.
The boy nodded, burying his head even further in his sister’s neck. Bucky tried not to remember if he had already encountered a child during his HYDRA years, if he had harmed them. He locked the Soldier’s memories deep inside his mind at that moment.
“Is it the arm?” Bucky asked, unsure.
Again, the boy nodded.
"I won't hurt you," Bucky assured, voice steady but calm. He waited until the bo nodded to slowly took his jacket off, then did the same to the sweater, remaining in his Captain America t-shirt – a souvenir from their visit to the Smithsonian. He looked at the boy, who was looking at the arm, afraid and curious at the same time.
He reached with his right hand and detached the metal device from his body swiftly – thanks Wakandan doctors. "See? No harm. I'm unarmed.”
The boy let out a giggle and separated a bit from his sister. A ghost of a smile appeared on Bucky's face. "Wanna hold it? For many reasons, Bucky wanted every member of HYDRA to suffer and die, wanted to make each and every single one of them see hell – and he would, but not now. But he was thankful for them making the arm as light as it was, so that the kid could hold it without struggle.
Steve, who took a couple of trembled steps toward the scene, observed the kid, whose eyes were glued to the metallic apparatus on his hands in sheer curiosity. He could hear it all, even if he couldn't make out the words by the lips.
“It’s nice,” the boy commented.
“I only use it for the good things,” Bucky explained, “Except when I have to fight the bad guys. After all, they can’t come and harm you, now can they?”
“So you protect us?” The boy’s eyes shone as he looked at Bucky with admiration, smiling, showing all his teeth.
“I try my best,” Bucky assured solemnly, for both them and himself.
The boy looked at the arm again, ran his fingers over the metal fingers and offered it back to the supersoldier. Bucky smiled politely and reattached his arm to his body.
“Thank you for protecting us,” was all the boy said before jumping into Bucky’s chest and wrapping his arms around his neck.
Bucky’s eyes were huge.
He barely hugged people other than Steve – and Thor, who demanded a hug every time he saw Bucky - afraid he’d hurt them. How could he hug a – small, fragile - child?
Bucky concluded he didn’t have a choice when the boy snuggled to him even tighter. In one of the most delicate movements Bucky performed in his entire life, he carefully wrapped his flesh arm around the boy’s back. The girl nodded at him, encouraging him to actually hug her brother. She trusted Bucky with her life and Bucky thought she shouldn't.
He quickly banished the thought form his head: he was trying to get better, trying to be good again. And the only way to be good was to believe he <em>was</em> good. Steve said it and Bucky wanted to make him happy.
The supersoldier slowly, cautiously raised his metal arm, flexed it and touched the boy’s back with his cool hand, running it up and down soothingly, slowly.
Steve observed the scene, still frozen, smiling, eyes burning with unshed tears. It was a beautiful scene to witness indeed.
The boy detached himself from Bucky after a minute or two, Bucky lost count, focusing solely in being gentle with the kid.
The girl grabbed the boy’s hand, “C’mon. Mom’s waiting for us,” she said. Her brother started tugging at her arm, wanting to return to their mother.
“Thank you,” the sister whispered, smiling. It was easier for Bucky to return it this time.
The twins ran back to their mother, who was watching the scene from afar. She was smiling.
Bucky glanced over his shoulder, confirming his suspicions that Steve was there, and slowly stood up, turning around.
His head was down, shoulders tense, clenched hands, his chin downwards protecting his throat and his flesh arm around his torso, holding the metal one. His voice was hesitant and so low that Steve wouldn’t have heard if he wasn’t standing right in front of him.
“Was that okay?”
Steve breathed a laugh, releasing some tension from his chest. He had forgotten how to breath while watching Bucky and the kids. “Did you seriously just ask me that?”
Bucky fought the urge to remain quiet and wait for his punishment as he had done for most of his life. He knew Steve would do that, even if he was indeed mad. But the laugh, the spark in his blue eyes
Bucky fought that maybe Steve wasn’t.
Instead, he force himself to shrugged, still apprehensive of what Steve thought about his interaction toward the children.
Steve took a step closer to Bucky and his hands found the other man’s shoulders, squeezing soothingly. His bright blue eyes showed nothing but love and pride.
“What you did was amazing, Buck. I couldn’t have dealt with it better myself,” Steve’s voice was strong, certain, though low. They still didn’t want to make a scene in a grocery store; most people hadn’t recognized them after all. Steve squeezed Bucky’s shoulders gently, not flinching when the metal one didn’t move. Steve smiled warmly at Bucky, his eyes watery and his chest clenched with love towards the brunette in front of him.
“I’m so proud of you.”
Bucky’s smile was so pure and genuine that Steve felt his eyes becoming glassy, but this time, he didn’t bother to cover it.
Steve pulled Bucky for a hug - the ex-assassin more relaxed now, since he knew he wouldn’t smash a child, he most definitely wouldn’t smash his supersoldier of a boyfriend. Bucky’s arm went Steve’s waist, while Steve had one around Bucky’s neck and the other ran over his back. One was what connect the other to life and they intended to transmit the message through caring gestures and loving words.
If someone recognized them, they kept their distance.

One In A Million // Kevin
Girl you're so one in a million You are Baby you're the best I ever had Best I ever had And I'm certain that There ain't nothing better No there ain't nothing better than this ××× It's too damn early for this. Why I had to be the one to go the grocery store I don't know. They woke me up out of my sleep knowing damn well out of everybody in the house I like my sleep the most. "Kev. Kev. Kevin we need to go to the store." Brian said, lightly shaking me in my bed. "Then go to store and leave me the hell alone." I groaned in my pillow, then flipped myself over to where my back was facing him. "I'm sorry. What I meant was: you need to go to the grocery store." "Rok, you're already up, why can't you go? Are you disabled in any way shape or form?!" He flopped on my bed and I was tempted to push him off. "Nah, man, me and Nick were about to get into an intense game off Mario Kart when I realized we're out of breakfast food." "There are 2 other guys in this house you could ask so why are you bothering me specifically?" To my dismay, I could feel myself slowly waking up. "If Jay went, he wouldn't be back until like five o'clock in the afternoon. If D went, he'd come back in time just not with the correct groceries. (Ya know, I think he does that on purpose so I won't ask him again.) I'm asking you because I know you're the most responsible and you'd go and get the right stuff in a timely fashion." Eventually I sat up and pushed Brian off my bed, hesitantly agreeing to go get groceries. I slowly push around the metal cart, thinking of all the ways to hurt those inconsiderate bastards when I get home when I hear metal clashing. I shake off those thoughts and look up to see what happened. "Holy shit! I am so sorry. I wasn't paying attention and it's so early. I haven't had my morning coffee yet so I promise I didn't mean to do it on purpose!" This woman stammers and I can make out the fatigue in her voice. She doesn't even glance up at me. She has fair brown skin and her hair is in a messy bun atop her head. The fact that she's not wearing makeup tells me that she really is tired and doesn't care that's she's out in public looking like she just woke up. I don't know what color her eyes are under her shades but I can surely tell that she looks tired and her lack of effort to smile doesn't help. Her baggy Lion King sweatshirt hangs off of her left shoulder and her sweatpants are seemingly held up by the jaw string. "It's alright, I promise. Clearly I wasn't the one paying attention." I say presenting a small smile. (One I'm hoping she'll reciprocate.) When she finally gives me her attention, her face stills. She bears an unreadable expression and I don't know what for. In what seems like a flash, she untangles her basket with mine, reverses it and changes her direction. Maybe she's not a social person... "Hey, wait..." My voice fades out in realization that it's not even worth it. Moving on, the first aisle I step into is for cereal because Howie can't go a day without his Lucky Charms and will be pissed if I don't get them. It makes me chuckle, remembering when AJ ate the last of the Lucky Charms one time and Howie cussed him out in Spanish. And Nick was mocking Howie, then he got cussed out in Spanish. Yesterday was fun. Next Brian wanted me to get him some macaroni and cheese, ice tea, and ginger ale for him. Nick and I both like Mint Chocolate Chip ice cream, that reminds me to get two separate pints this time because next time he eats mine I will kick that kid's ass. I search through all the various flavors of dairy delicacy and my ears unconsciously pick up on a conversation being held in the next aisle over. "Mama, you don't understand! He was fine...as in fine as hell fine!" The voice sort of matches the one to the female that I had a semi pleasant encounter with no less than five minutes ago. I continue my actions with pulling two cartons out of the freezer and her voice gets closer. "No, I know, Mama! Yeah you didn't send me to the store to find a man. I got it. But he was fine! Now what type of bread do you say get?" Now I don't want to get cocky because I hate arrogant people but what are the odds that she isn't talking about me? Honestly. I have no intentions whatsoever to confront her but the bizarre thought of this woman openly talking about me is kind of exciting! Calm down Kevin! This woman could be talking about some other good looking gentleman at this market at 10 o'clock in the morning. As my luck would have it, just as I'm turning out of the frozen section I crash into another cart. Or rather the same cart as before. I was most definitely distracted by that woman's conversation and that's exactly who I run into. Seems like she didn't expect it neither, her shades fell off her face but she held onto that phone like it was her lifeline. "Oh my fucking God!" She hisses under her breath but loud enough for me to hear. And she cusses, that's not very ladylike. I like it. I see there is coffee in her basket along with creamer, zebra cakes, swiss roles, cheese crackers, white milk, hot pockets, and bread. Is that for her because that is junk. Straight junk. But who am I to judge? She drops to her knees to pick up her shades and when she comes back up I am bitch slapped by her beauty. Her cheekbones rival that of my own and her eyes are a shade of green and brown. Out of all the guys I know, I've never been ashamed to admit to myself that I have a black woman fetish. Well, my cousin's got a bit of one himself; they obviously love the jawline, baby blue eyes and the goofy personality. But I can't blame him, we grew up the same way and they were almost like forbidden treasure to us. And people know that when you can't have something you without a doubt want it even more. "I don't know whether to say this is funny or very awkward." I comment jokingly. "Same. I feel like I have introduce myself now since I've interrupted your day twice now with my carelessness." She chuckles, putting her shades atop her head and I am literally mesmerized by her eyes but it appears like she's trying to avoid eye contact. Nor does she remove her basket from mine. "Well that shouldn't be too hard. My general southern hospitality requires me to go first, I'm Kevin." I hold out my hand for her to shake (and I want to look into her eyes, if she gives me the opportunity.) Yes, my heart speeds up a notch when she giggles at my lame joke. I don't even know this woman's name! Come on Richardson, get it together! "Southern hospitality, huh? Thought I heard a country accent in there somewhere. Eva." My heart rate kicks it up another two notches as she shakes my hand and meets my eyes all at once. ×××××××××××××××××××××××××××××××××××× I rush into the house, nearly throwing the groceries into he kitchen. Brian and Nick were – just like he said – engaged in a severely intense game of Mario Kart. Looks like their trying to beat Rainbow Road again. "Hey cuz! Did you get the stuff from the store?" Brian asks, not moving from his position. I'm moving so fast, I'm struggling to take off my jacket to get upstairs to change. Someone comes up behind and tugs my jacket sleeve and everything fell into place afterwards. I turn around and see it's just Howie and he looks like he woke a second ago. He goes to lay down on the couch and watches Bri and Nick play the game without any words. That could've been me but then I wouldn't have gotten Eva's number! And I sure as hell wouldn't be meeting her at Starbucks for lunch! "I sure did!" I yell from the hallway. "Oh since you're so helpful can you also–" "No. No. And hell no. Cook you're own damn food! I have a place to be." "But I wasn't–" "I don't care. I have a place to be." I steady my breathing by walking up the stairs then I hear: "Damn, you'd think he's getting his dick sucked at this place where he has to be!" The his unmistakeable giggles to follow. "The fuck did you say Nickolas?!" I pause on the carpeted stairs. The childish giggles turn in coughs real quick. If I wasn't in such a hurry to take a shower and choose a casual outfit for Starbucks, I'd go back down there to threaten him with my fist. That always works quite effectively. We plan to meet up at 12:30 so that gives me roughly an hour. I took some time in the shower to wash my long hair and it needs to blow dried which I will do after I put on my clothes. A white T-shirt, red flannel, and jeans is casual right? White Converse are like the epitome of casual in my book. I check my watch and see that I have 10 minutes and it takes me a minute or so to get over the shock of that I clearly stayed in the showers way too long. Now I don't have time to dry my hair. Good Lord, I sound like a woman! Man bun will have to do I see. Cologne, check. Deodorant, check.  Groucho Marx eyebrows, check. Wallet, check. I'm good to go. I basically jump down the stairs and now everyone is playing Mario Kart game. Appears to be DK Summit this time. "Ah fuck you AJ! How dare you throw that blue shell at me! It's the last lap too!" "Nicky it's not my fault your ass was in first place. Keyword being was." AJ cackles. "Language!" Brian scolds. "And you're in last place that wouldn't have helped you anyway." I comment. Nick looks up at me and pauses the game with his controller. "Kev, where're you going? Are you really going get your dick sucked?" "Language!" "Nick...You better hope you're not the first person I see when I come back from Starbucks." "Starbucks?!" They question in unison. "You hate Starbucks! You think all the people who drink Starbucks are uptight and full of themselves!" Howie says. "And I still do. I have a lunch date with this woman I met at the store so that's the only reason I'm going. Don't wait up kids. Don't burn down the house. Don't starve. Daddy will be back later." I grab my keys, jacket and walk out the door. ××××××××××××××××××××××××××××××××××× On the way there all I could think about was what this Eva woman was like. There's no doubt that's she's cooler than Elsa on ice. I just want to get to know her. She's obviously gorgeous and that makes me nervous. And this will be the first time I was asked out by a black woman, normally it's the other way around but I have no problem with that either. I enter the coffee shop and there she was standing at the front of the line in a yellow sundress with white Converse and her hair is out of that perfect messy bun. Gorgeous. And casual, like I thought. I don't know what she was ordering but I thought I should pay for it. "Hey you!" I greeted her and she jumps, holding her chest. "Hey you! Don't do that I have a weak heart." She laughs to herself. "Oh my God, really?" "Oh hell no but don't do that. I was just ordering if you want anything." "I don't eat here so I wouldn't know what's good. Why can't I just have what you're having?" "Because I'm getting a salad, do you want a salad?" "Oh hell no." I chuckle, my eyes graze the menu. "Get whatever you feel won't ruin my taste buds. I trust you, girl." "But you don't know me." I lean down to whisper in her ear. My lips graze her ear. "That's what I'm here for, Eva." I turn on my heels and search for a booth to sit at. An hour later we're chatting like we've been friends for years. I finished my sandwich and she finished her salad. "Can I ask you a question?" "Sure babe." That came out oddly easily. It rolled off the tongue like water rolled off a duck's back. "Do you know that you are insanely gorgeous? Like you are fine as hell!" Suspicions confirmed. I drop my head and when you're white, the blush is right there front and center. "You must make men feel real insecure when you're standing next to them huh?" "And you're one to talk! I feel like I'm on a date with a supermodel." "I don't know about the super part but that's probably because I am a model." My eyebrows nearly shoot off my face. I stand no chance of hiding my shock. "Really I'm model too!" "I'm gonna have to come see one of your shows then. I'm sure I won't be disappointed." Eva winks at me and I can't stop smiling. "I guess that means the same for me. I know I won't be disappointed." Then I add my wink and she tucks a braid behind her ear and that's probably the sexiest thing I've seen in a while. The flirting continued all throughout the rest of the date. It went so well. Better than well more like fantastic. I stroll in the house with a sack of Chinese food and a stupid ass grin that's going to break my face sooner or later. Those little bastards snatch the bag out of my hand but nothing can kill my vibe. I know its too early to tell but damn, Eva might be the one. I don't think I will be able to find another one like her. Brian walks up to me putting soy sauce on his teriyaki chicken and rice. I look down at my little cousin and the grin still hasn't wavered. "Aren't you glad I sent you to the grocery store?" I don't even respond I simply nod and join the boys in the kitchen. ×××××× @nessaimagines

4 Unique Places to Stay in Quebec Winter
When you think of Quebec winter and snow, you normally think of a big comfy lodge with a couch you can sink into, a big fireplace, hot toddy, and lots of flannel. But I don’t like to do the expected, so instead of staying in a big cozy lodge for my winter adventures in Quebec, I instead opted for the unique, rustic, unusual, scary, and some would say just plain weird accommodations around Quebec.
I normally say that people don’t go to a destination to experience a hotel, but in this case, I may be wrong! Each of these places provided such a unique experience that you may go to Quebec just to sleep there!
Note: Due to a few things outside of my control, like flights and some maintenance, I didn’t actually get to stay at all of these places, but I did go visit the ones I was unable to sleep at.
Intriguing Quebec Winter Accommodations

I know, I know – sleeping in a room made of ice at 19F to 23F degrees inside might seem pretty uncomfortable (shiver), but it’s an incredible experience that you can boast about for years! The Hotel de Glace is North America’s only Ice Hotel, and it’s full of incredible ice sculptures and designs.
Creating the Hotel de Glace This process starts each year in December and it takes 50 people 6 weeks to build. It normally tops out at 32,000 square feet and it made entirely of ice (500 tons) and hard packed snow (30,000 tons). The structure is created with a mold. A special mixture of water and snow is packed on and around the mold until it freezes and then the mold is pulled out and suddenly you have a section of building! They have to do a small section at a time with the mold which basically created the Great Hall. The hall even has curves and turns in it all created from the mold process. This is also where you will find a number of the intricate ice sculptures and snow wall carvings.
Each April the structure is completely destroyed and they start over again next winter! It really is an engineering marvel, so if you are the type of person who love to visit cool engineering sights, then don’t miss this!

Sleeping at the Hotel de Glace After you go through the Great Hall, you’ll come to the rooms; each one uniquely designed. There are suites that include a bigger room and some even have fireplaces. However the fireplaces are just for looks, not heat is actually emitted
boo.
However, when you stay overnight at the hotel you get all of the tools you need to stay warm, and it starts with an orientation. There you learn all about how to dress for sleeping (use dry, light and synthetic clothing which has not been worn during the day). You’ll also learn about the sauna garden that is at your disposal to warm up your body before hopping in the arctic sleeping bag (rated at -22F) to doze off in your ice room. Don’t worry, you aren’t just sleeping on a block of ice, you actually have a nice, thick mattress that sits on top of the ice block bed. And if it’s just too cold for you, your Ice Hotel room actually also comes with a real hotel room, so you can bail out and go to your normal hotel room nearby too. However, if you do everything right and wear the right, dry clothes, don’t worry – you’ll stay toasty warm.
Sadly, due to a delayed flight I had to forfeit my stay at the ice hotel, but I did go and tour it the next day. The Hotel de Glace is open to the public for tours all day until 8PM when the guests take their rooms.

Sleeping with Wolves
Head north from the Ice Hotel in Quebec City and go where the snow is even more plentiful, Saguenay Lac Saint Jean! Here you’ll find a number of other unique winter lodgings like Aventuraid; a unique overnight wildlife experience.
My little A-frame chalet was toasty warm when I went inside; the wood stove bellowing out heat in a welcoming way. The cabin was simple and cute. A little sink (no plumbing), hot plate, bed downstairs, table, and then a ladder that led up to the loft where there was another bed. The lighting was by solar and there was a shared kitchen, bathroom, and shower space in a bigger building about 30 feet away. But the most important part of the chalet was the windows. The windows were what gave me a view of my neighbors, an Arctic wolfpack.
Aventuraid is a tour company that specialized in dog sledding, snow shoeing, canoeing, and wolf encounters. You might find this combination strange, but as the owner, Gilles, explained to us “When you do dog sledding, you are fascinated by wolves.” Some people are bird lovers, Gilles is a wolf lover. His objective with the park is to show wildlife in their natural state. “It’s not a zoo, it’s an observation center,” he states.
You can observe the wolves a number of ways. The 3 wolf packs are enclosed by fences, so the first thing I did was get my camera and take a walk in the deep snow around the perimeter of the large fenced off area. As I walked around the fence-line, the wolves would lurk behind you and stop when you stopped. They never got close, and many times they would disappear, but you always felt like you were being watched – in a slightly creepy way.
Gilles also offers a contact activity with the wolves in which people are able to go inside the enclosure (only if the wolves are in a good mood according to Gilles), and spend time interacting with them. It’s a strange feeling to have them growling and fighting among themselves as you stand in the middle of the pack; they are powerful animals. Few people have the chance to put their hand in their thick, coarse fur but for those who do – it’s a beautiful experience.
Learn more about my wolf contact experience at Aventuraid here
And finally, you can stay overnight at the little A-Frame Chalet basically sleeping right next to the wolves. It’s sort of like having your own little, warm blind to hide inside while you observe the wildlife outside. as I lay there in my bed trying to sleep, I realized I could hear the wolves walking around; their paws crunching in the snow. I sat up in the dark and looked out the window above my bed. Thanks to the full moon, the white snow was lit up as if there was a light on in the forest. I could easily see some of the wolves outside my window. I watched as they ran around together, played, ate, and howled. Before I knew it, I had been sitting there watching for over an hour, mesmerized by their every move and interaction.
You can have dinner catered to you in the shared building as part of the overnight ‘sleep with wolves’ package. Breakfast is also included in the morning.

Igloft Winter Glamping
If like me, you love wide open spaces and desolate landscapes, then maybe you’d like to sleep in the middle of an ice desert. What’s that, you’ve never heard of an ice desert, well
that’s because I sort of made it up. But that’s what it feels like when you sleep out on frozen Lac Saint Jean in the middle of winter in your little Igloft. The lake is about 27 miles long and 15 miles wide – and the winds howl across the flat iced over lake. Sounds like a perfect place to sleep – doesn’t it?!
The ice desert
Hugues Ouellet, of Equinox Adventure, is one of the visionaries of the igloft; a small tiny home-esque building that sits out in the middle of Lac Saint Jean. He describes it as “a loft and igloo of modern times.” Thanks to the Igloft, it is possible to stay in this unique geography. It is a real immersion in a polar environment with a hotel comfort.
The little structure is small but mighty; it even floats just in case the ice decides to crack beneath you! It is equipped with everything you need for a short stay; a futon/bed, small kitchen, a little toilet area, a pop up table and fold up chairs, plus a little wood stove that looks more like a Barbie stove! The igloft is full of windows and even a skylight so that you can get a great view of that ice desert and of the stars as you sleep.
Upon arrival, guests receive a starter kit/manual containing all info you need to stay overnight. They also must attend a mandatory meeting for 30 minutes that ensure you’ve gone through the material. Next they provide you with your food for the night, they give you snowshoes, and a sled to pull your things; you are now ready to hike out to your igloft accommodation located less than one kilometer from the shore. My advice is to make sure you bring a few bottles of wine to really enjoy your stay!
Stay in the Igloft on Frozen Lac Saint Jean
You can find more information on renting the igloft here. They are expanding their ‘fleet’ next winter! Plus – they also have a summer one that floats on the lake that is completely sold out. The iglofts will work in the winter or summer.
Imago Yurt Village
If the other Quebec winter lodging options were just a little too extreme for you, here’s one that is slightly more normal – a winter stay in a yurt. That’s right – a colorful yurt that could withstand even the Mongolian winters! My blue yurt named Oslo was nestled back in the trees. As I pulled my sled with my suitcase in it to the entrance I could see smoke coming out of the chimney – a welcoming sight on the cold night.
The 16 foot yurt can sleep up to 4 people, but I had this little gem all to myself. They’ve taken the typical Mongolian Yurt design and utilized every bit of space to make the place a cozy lofted accommodation. It packed a lot into a small space; 1 double bed and 1 single bed and a sofa bed, a deck, a compost toilet a sink, a fridge microwave corner, wifi, and a pellet stove. The beds were up a ladder in a loft area. The loft had a domed ceiling so you could gaze at the stars as you slept – it really was magical. Showers, toilets and running water are available at the separate building nearby.
This was my first time using a pellet stove. You use little wood pellets and just dump them in the top of the stove and they release and burn all night. It was so easy and it kept the entire yurt toasty warm all night. You can bring your own food to cook, or have dinner in the Village Imago Bistro-Bar like I did. Tip – get the poutine with steak – it was delicious! Imago village provides breakfast of fruit, brie bread, coffee, and juice in the morning for your yurt experience.
The yurt looks out over the Valin Mountains and even comes with a little deck. I only stayed one night, but I wanted to stay a week, it really was a unique, special little getaway in the woods! This is the perfect place for a relaxing winter getaway with so many things to do nearby.
Stay in the Imago Yurt Village
Rent your very own yurt in the winter or summer at Imago Village here
As you can see, each of these unique places to stay in Quebec winter is worth making a special trip for. Or better yet, go for a week and stay in all of them like I did!

Wisconsin’s Communities
Experience Barron County Wisconsin
Located in northwest Wisconsin in what’s typically called the “Heart of the North” area, you will find the picturesque place called Barron County. From farm fields to forest, the Blue Hills to rivers, lakes and streams of all sizes, Barron County has plenty to offer people of all ages.
The county is 30 x 30 square miles, and its cities include Rice Lake (Aquafest – June), Barron (Fall Fest), Chetek (Libertyfest – July), and Cumberland (Rutabaga Festival). Villages include Almena (Almena Fun Days), Dallas (Oktoberfest), Haugen (Haugen Fun Days), Prairie Farm and Turtle Lake (Inter-County Fair).
A popular winter destination, Rice Lake gets its name for just that. A city located on the western edge of Rice Lake. The lake itself offers a wide variety of fun from winter car ice racing, to snowmobile trails, but let’s not underestimate the fishing opportunities that this lake has to offer. In the winter months, this lake has several different “cities” of ice shacks that decorate the frozen water. This is for good reason as the lake provides ample fishing opportunity for bass, bluegill, crappie, and northern pike. The southern end of the lake offers a deeper basin with plenty of areas to hone in on the panfish bite. The northern end of the lake also holds plenty of panfish, and is a great attraction to place out the tip-ups, and chase flags all day long as northern pike, and the occasional muskellunge take your presentation.
The lake is also a main trail for snowmobile riders to connect to the hundreds of miles of snowmobile trails that Barron County has to offer. Rice Lake acts as the “hub” for the county with plenty of places to eat, sleep and shop.
If competition is your thing, during the winter months of January and February, you can test your fishing skills at one of the ice fishing tournaments that are held on many of the local lakes. Aside from Rice Lake, the county has several lakes of all sizes and depth ranges to catch plenty of fish. The winter fishing is popular for both walleye, and panfish. With lakes dotting the landscape, especially in the northern half of the county, you will have plenty to choose from to find a lake you like.
There are 369 lakes to be exact. The walleye are very popular for early ice fisherman, and you will find them along the shorelines. Target the areas with rock, sand, and rubble. The sharp dropping shorelines with close access to deep water are go-to areas. Fishermen will set up tip-ups before dark, and fish into the night. The panfish bite is excellent as well.
Many lakes have more fish than, “you can shake a stick at,” while others have less numbers but much larger fish. At early ice, the panfish like to hang around logs, cribs, or old weed growth. As the winter sets in, deeper holes in the lakes will hold the majority of the panfish. Likely, this is where you will find the small “cities” of ice shacks. Generally, the bluegill are active during the daylight hours, and you will find crappie fishermen drilling holes and setting lines as the sun fades. The crappie fishing can be excellent after dark so you can enjoy plenty to do outside during the day, and relax in a fish house and fish throughout the night.
Barron County is a fun snowmobiling destination as it, not only, has hundreds of miles of trails that wind through farmfields, over beautiful lakes, and through the scenic Northwood’s, but it also connects to neighboring counties such as Rusk, Washburn, and Polk. You can ride for hours stopping along the way for great food and drink.
The Tuscobia, Wild Rivers and Cat Tail Trails are the main snowmobile routes that connect to many other sections of trail opportunities. The Tuscobia Trail runs as far east as Park Falls, and the Wild Rivers Trail can take you all the way to the northern part of the state in Superior.
If 4 wheels are your thing, Barron County offers almost 80 miles of 4-wheeler trails and opportunities. Located just outside of Almena, there is an area called the “ATV Playground.” This is an intensive use area, and wheelers can be brought here to break loose and have some fun.  You can begin your ATV and snowmobile adventures in Chetek in the southeast part of the county, Turtle Lake in the western portion of the county, Cumberland in the northwest and Rice Lake in the northeast. Rice Lake offers many motels and restaurants adjacent to the trails.
Barron County has even more opportunities to offer outdoor enthusiasts such as hiking, snowshoeing, cross country skiing and more. For cross country skiers, the Cumberland area ski trail association (CASTA) has 15 miles of trails for winter enjoyment. For more information on CASTA, visit their website at timberlandhills.com   If you are in the Barron area, they also offer just over 4 miles of trails just south of the city of Barron.
With thousands of acres of public land located in the county, you should have no problem finding an area you would like to explore.  Snowshoe through the vast wilderness, snowy pine groves, over small lakes and ponds, through the tall oaks, and up and down the rolling terrain.
Mountain biking is coming on strong in the county with what may be the premier single track trail being built in the Doyle/Pipestone Quarry Forest area, east of Rice Lake. IMBA (International Mountain Biking Association) and CORBA (Chippewa Off Road Biking Association) initially established the trail in 2015 and each weekend during the summer crews are working to lengthen it.
With large tracts of public land available throughout the county, late season archery along with the small game seasons gives great opportunities to try some late season hunting.  The public land has just about anything you could want from rolling hills, covered with oaks and maples, to lowland swamps and thick dense cover that hold deer, grouse and rabbits.
It’s hard to beat a fresh snowfall in the woods. Whether you are hunting, hiking, fat tire biking or just viewing wildlife; the many trails, parks and abundant public land in Barron County have a lot to offer everyone.
This year the Rice Lake curling club is celebrating its 50th anniversary. This is one of Wisconsin’s largest and most modern curling clubs and attracts curlers nationally. The Rice Lake curling club hosted the USCA Mixed National Championship in 2001, and has hosted other events such as the World Qualifier for the University Games, and the World Qualifier Senior National Championships. The club is a premier curling destination and holds several events all year long. It has brand new rocks this season, and it is a great place to curl.
The county offers a list of winter events, which include:
Rice Lake Holiday Parade-December 1st– Rice Lake
Tuscobia Winter Ultra-January 6th -8th – Rice Lake
Christmas lights in the park- December 3rd-January 7th-Turtle Lake
Santa’s arrival and family day-December 10th-Chetek
Winter Fest-February 25th-Chetek
If history is to your liking, take in Pioneer Village. Tour through nearly 40 buildings. Five large display buildings, including a one-of-a-kind exhibition hall with forty glass-front display cases, filled with items from the distant past. Don’t miss the toy shop with antique pedal cars and toys of by-gone days. Be sure to view the five historic log buildings from the pioneer days.
Take a leisurely stroll down Pioneer Street, and you will encounter an early railroad depot, country school, dentist office, doctor’s office, jail, saloon, blacksmith shop, newspaper office, library, meeting house, general store, post office and the historic Ebenezer Lutheran Church.
There is an entertainment pavilion for public use, numerous picnic and rest areas along the way with modern restroom facilities. The gift shop is filled with many one-of-a-kind hand crafted items, including beautiful hand-loomed rugs. The Cultural Arts Building houses the Pioneer Grill, which serves food during special events and has seating both inside and outside. www.barroncountymuseum.com/

Healthy looking meadow marmot by oldmantravels Always inquisitive. Always amenable to having their photo portrait taken. This marmot was in quite a different environment than his cousin, we found still making a living in a snow and ice landscape up by Lake Solitude. After hiking upon the snow and surrounded by snow for several miles and several hours, returning to the meadows and forest at the lower elevations, overwhelms the senses with colors and fragrance. These are the photos of our return hike from Lake Solitude; down the North Fork Cascade Creek Canyon to the North/South Forks trail junction; down Cascade Canyon to Lake Jenny; and then back along the Jenny Lake trail to my car at the String Lake trailhead. The views were new facing the opposite direction, we met lots of hikers and backpackers coming the other way. Most of the clouds had long since drifted away from all but the highest of Teton peaks. We saw the only bear on this hike near the trail junction, and where we had met the cow moose earlier that morning, she was gone and two bull moose, with antlers in velvet were feeding along the same stretch of creek. We passed many more of the endearing trail clowns and photo bomb artists, the marmots. On the Jenny Lake trail the osprey tended its nest and seemed a little put out with all the hikers passing below its nest. We reached the trailhead, and returned to Jackson Hole to catch up with the stories my two granddaughters had to tell and thank my wife for watching them, while we took a most memorable hike (with some clear mountain air good exercise thrown in, not to mention the scenery, flora, and fauna). ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Jackson Hole, Wyoming Road Trip: June 18 through June 29, 2018. I drove to Salt Lake City from our house in Eastern Washington on Monday the 18th of June 2018. I drove it straight through in our Honda Fit. Over the next ten days of driving I got an impressive 42 mpg or better, with the little car. Monday through Wednesday 6.18 - 6.20.2018 I stayed at our son's home outside Salt Lake City. My wife was already there, helping with the care of our two granddaughters now two and five. Thursday (6.21.18) morning my wife and I took off for Wyoming in the Honda. We took favorite scenic back roads to Jackson Hole, Wyoming. (starting with Utah highway 150 over Hayden Pass) Our son, daughter-in-law and two granddaughters left later that day. The kids had use of a friend's condo in Jackson Hole, and were good enough to invite my wife and I to join them for a week there, using Jackson as a "base camp" for hikes and scenic drives in the area. Family fun. Thursday brought stormy weather to Teton Nation Park, making for some interesting photo ops with the sun breaks and dramatic storm clouds racing across the landscape. Friday and Saturday the weather turned sunny, clear and beautiful. We enjoyed a variety of activities in Jackson and in Teton National Park. Walking the streets of Jackson Hole is always entertaining and frequently full of surprises. Sunday my wife volunteered to watch the two girls while my son, his wife, and I took an all day, 17 mile round trip, day hike. For me it was the highlight of the trip. I had researched hiking Paintbrush Canyon to the Divide, but rangers informed me that too much snow lingered on that route and ice axe and even crampons would be best for that route. The same ranger told me that the Cascade Canyon hike to the junction and to the designated camps halfway to Lake Solitude, were hike able (not too much snow) so that is the route we decided to hike. We opted not to take the shuttle boat across Jenny Lake but to start our hike early at the String Lake trailhead, hiking to the foot of Cascade Canyon by that route. We started hiking at around 6:30 am. The first shuttle boat (which leaves at 7am) beat us to the canyon but we much preferred the extra hiking. My son and his wife had previously hiked to Hidden Falls, so we left that off our agenda for this hike. We saw a cow moose on our hike to the trail junction (South Cascade Creek with North Cascade Creek). A hiking couple from France arrived just as we were leaving so we pointed out the moose across the creek, and when we encountered them later in the day they told us that two bull moose had arrived after we left. Up the trail from the moose sighting a solo hiker coming down the canyon warned us that he had spotted a grizzly about a mile up the trail. We kept our eyes open and bear spray handy but did not encounter a bear on our hike on to the trail junction. We took off our day packs at the trail junction and had some trail food. Other hikers showed up including the French couple, Several hikers headed back down the trail, having selected the junction as their day's destination. A few others headed up the North Fork Cascade Canyon route towards Lake Solitude, as we intended to do. It is about 2.7 miles from the junction to the lake and we figured we would make it about half day before deep snow stopped us. Well, we decided to keep going past the designated campsites and the trail become covered with deeper and deeper snow. We did our share of post holing and moon walking but there was only one very short troublesome section among big boulders. Once past that 25 yard section the snow hiking was no problem. Two young women hikers (later I would learn they were from Minnesota and Indiana) led the way, hiking light and fast, we could see them up ahead of us making decisions on the best route when the snow cover made basic cross country the only choice. The French couple followed the three of us and we leapfrogged them all the way to Lake Solitude. Lake Solitude (though 95% frozen over) resides in a scenic cirque. The trail route coming down to the lake from Paintbrush Divide could be seen up above the lake. The two young women passed us as they were leaving the lake and the French couple and the three of us had Lake Solitude to ourselves. It was a wonderful experience and a just reward for the mile and half or so of deep snow hiking we had done to get there. As you might expect we met hiker after hiker as we made our way back to the North Fork / South Fork junction, most asking us for trail beta, which we gladly supplied. Two young hikers told us that they had spotted two black bear on the trail before the junction. Like the "grizzly" we didn't encounter them. At the trail junction a large cinnamon black bear was roaming about. He was beautiful and it is my bet he may have been the bear that the early morning hiker had mistaken for a grizzly, but clearly he was a brown "black bear". He hiked in the woods, found a mud hole behind a downed snag, and plopped in the middle of it. They he returned the way he had first traveled, back down the canyon. On our hike back down to Jenny Lake we were rewarded by the presence of the two bull moose in the same section of creek bottom, where we had spotted the cow moose earlier that morning. On the hike from the foot of Cascade Creek Canyon to the String Lake trailhead we saw the osprey tending a nest, overlooking Jenny Lake. We reached the String Lake trailhead just before 5:30 pm, so it had been an eleven hour, 17 miles covered (three up and back through deep snow) day. All three of us felt great and did due justice to hot showers and a big dinner, when we returned to Jackson Hole. Monday June 25th the kids headed up to Yellowstone and my wife and I relaxed and took short walks and drives in the Teton National Park area (including a fun trip to Two Ocean Lake). Tuesday June 26th, I got up before everybody and took a short hike to Leigh Lake, where I saw a fox on the trail but no moose or bear (there was a warning sign at the trailhead for an aggressive Mommy Moose with a little one, in the area). Back from the hike it was family activity the rest of the day around Jackson Hole. Wednesday, June 27th, my wife and I started our two day back road drive back to our house in Eastern Washington. We drove Jackson to Arco, to Challis, past Clayton, where we got a cabin for the night at Torrey's Burnt Creek Cabins. A most enjoyable stay, Thursday June 28th, my wife and I traveled past Stanley, Lowman, and Banks, Idaho (a favorite route of our traveled many times both directions over many years), on to Ontario, Oregon - - where we got on the interstate and whisked on home. We toured one of the first nuclear reactor sites near Arco, Idaho (EBR 1 and had to ask the tour guide to hear the story of the three workers killed at one of the facilities there). We also stopped to read about and see the results of a 1983 earthquake at the foot of Idaho's Lost Mountain Range (near Mt. Borah - Idaho's highest peak). Photos posted mostly in chronological order. There will be an inordinate number of the Grand Teton peaks, in their different moods and from different angles, and a ton of photos from our Lake Solitude hike. When posting photos I err on the same side of quantity as I do when taking them - - too many! Oldmantravels July 9, 2018 https://flic.kr/p/28UU4Ry
