i know i should probably just wishfully think my way into believing that that little girl who gets triggered by the word 'no' is ok now, but...

... do you have an update on her? is it good news? if not, do you have any good news for me?

I do, actually, and it is good news! She's basically my bonus child, and we (husband and I) had several good discussions with her parents (now good friends) about spanking and discipline.

Side note: We didn't go into it as a lecture of "we're right you're wrong, here's how to parent your child". It came up naturally one day when said little girl hit her mom, and mom 'swatted her butt' about it and told her "no hitting," and my husband who was right there automatically went, "But remember, when grown ups hit it's okay." And that made the mom stop and think. We're lucky she's a blunt person to begin with and openly appreciates others also being straightforward. Cue a long discussion about the research behind spanking, especially for kids of a young age, and alternative discipline methods.

Not just because of that, but the overall result is that they actually spank way, way less now, if ever. (For which I'm very grateful!!) She's still rather... averse to confrontation or situations where she thinks she's in trouble, but she doesn't have the panic response anymore. She also doesn't default to thinking she's going to get spanked, and she can handle a simple no in a normal way now. There are some times when she gets a bit tense about us correcting her or asking her not to do something, but it's not as frequent or as visceral now, and I can confidently say that when this change started was directly correlated to when her parents started spanking less (and going to family therapy for unrelated reasons, but it helped communication in all aspects, so here's my obligatory plug for therapy even if you're not mentally ill).

In fact, she's come such a long way that once a few months ago, she pushed our soap dispenser off the counter and it shattered. Instead of hiding, bursting into tears, or otherwise having an "Oh crap it's my fault and I'm so scared" moment, she openly admitted to us that she had pushed it on purpose because it was in her way. She was sorry it broke, but she didn't panic thinking we were going to be mad at her. (And we weren't; we explained that we don't knock things over on purpose even if they're in the way, that's when we ask for help, and she apologized and that was that.)

So yes, good news! She's a fun, happy little girl, my daughter's best friend, and in most ways your average preschooler.

And a fun, unrelated anecdote from her: She can't say the "k" sound yet and replaces it with a "t." This is fine, and quite normal for a lot of kids. But her favorite show, which she talks about and reenacts all the time, is called Super Kitties. It's deeply hilarious, and I have to work hard to keep a straight face when she's telling me all about those there Super Titties, which are, of course Titties, but they're Titties that are superheroes. Her favorite Titty is the pink Titty. She sure loves those Titties.

Kids are a never ending source of entertainment, y'all.

okay like two out of three of my cats are like… on death’s door basically despite them being all roughly the same age and sharing the same genetics (mother aged 16, son and daughter aged 15) and while i’ve accepted that i’ll be exceptionally lucky to get even another year or two with the momma cat (bonded to me) and that her son (bonded to my mom) is not too far behind… despite being the runt 15 years ago, the daughter (also bonded to me) is still quite spry and in good health so i literally tell her sometimes like you’d better live til you’re 20. i need at least five more years with you and also some time in between you and your mom dying. please.

while she’s doing her check up, she can’t help but to notice some old scars and some scratches that looks very fresh.

“papa hurt?” your worried daughter raises kento’s hand.

“it’s just a scratch, honey, it’ll go away.”

“no! papa hurt! papa wait!”

she scurries over to her nearby table and started to look for something leaving kento confused.

she then comes back with a couple of hello kitty bandaids.

“papa hand...”

your daughter started patching up kento’s scratches and then gave it a kiss. he could die right now.

“there, papa no hurt!” she proudly smiles.

“thank you, princess.” giving her a kiss on the forehead.

he says he’s not good with dolls and princess stories, but after you tell him about how sad tsumiki was the day prior, he makes it a point to take her out.

everyone’s heads turn when he walks into the hello kitty cafe, dressed in black from head to toe and holding the hand of a little girl with your hair and his eyes. moms blush and talk among themselves, workers wonder if they need to call someone, little kids stare and the occasional one points.

he doesn’t care though. all he sees is tsumiki’s big smile, and that’s enough.

toji is almost a whole head taller than the worker, whose hands clutch the ordering tablet while they stiffen in their pink striped uniform. “uh, what can I get for you, sir?”

his green eyes flicker down to his daughter, who clutches his arm with one hand while the other points at the menu. “the cinnamoroll, papa! the one in the blue! with the sparkles!”

a grunt leaves him, then he’s unintentionally staring down the employee. “uh, the cinnamon roll one”-

“cinnamoroll, papa!” tsumiki corrects, tugging his arm a bit.

“cinnamoroll, the cinnamoroll drink,” toji repeats, a little nauseated by the scent of the sweets, but bent on making his girl happy. “and, uh…”

he searches for a drink he can tolerate, brow raising as he finds one. “the baddo batsu black coffee.”

a few taps on the ordering tablet and the employee looks up. “anything else, sir?”

it’s almost comical how he looks to tsumiki, waiting for her approval. she squeezes his hand and reaches over the counter to grab at a pack of tiaras sporting the cute little characters she loves so much.

toji pays, the pair waits for their drinks, then they sit at a table together. tsumiki places one tiara on her head, quickly giving the other to her papa. he lets her babble on about about who these characters are, asking her questions and spoiling her rotten.

and when tomorrow comes, he feels more than satisfied when you tell him about how tsumiki called yesterday the best day of her life.

maybe he’ll take her every week, actually.
