Was watching Multiverse of Madness with my dad last night and we got into a discussion about Marvel multiverse theories... and I actually came up with one that I think is pretty neat?? Not that I genuinely believe this is the direction they're going with things... But it would be cool.
Gwen Stacy and Kate Bishop are the same person.
Explanation for this idea under the cut.
Now I'm trying to figure out how best to articulate this thought, so bear with me if this sounds a little funny.
First of all, the obvious point is that they're both played by Hailee Steinfeld - Gwen in Spiderverse, Kate in Hawkeye. Now, the MCU is kind of inconsistent when it comes to actors playing characters across the multiverse (Benedict Cumberbatch is always Doctor Strange, but there are three different Spider-Men, things like that), and I know most of this media-wise is just fan service for the audience, but I think I've uncovered a little bit of logic behind it.
Characters with innate powers are always the same actor, characters who develop powers are not. AKA, Wong and Mordo and Strange are consistent because they have a natural affinity towards magic, Professor X is consistently Patrick Stewart because he's always a mutant (assuming the James McAvoy version is meant to "age into" Patrick Stewart), and Wanda falls alternatively into either of those camps depending on what version of her we're referring to (she's either a witch or a mutant, but has natural abilities either way). However, Spider-Man is given powers by the spider, not born with them, so it can be a different person/actor. Same thing with Mr. Fantastic (cosmic radiation), Captain Carter (supersoldier serum), Captain Marvel/Binary (more cosmic energy), and the others we see in MoM that already have variants in different movies. Different actors, since logically those powers could be given to anyone in the right circumstance. Black Bolt is an Inhuman, but doesn't have another film version we've seen, so he's not a problem.
Now, Hailee Steinfeld plays both Gwen and Kate - neither of which have innate abilities. Kate is a skilled archer but doesn't have superpowers, and Gwen was bitten by a radioactive spider like any other Spider-person. So her being played by the same actor makes things... interesting.
There is the hitch that these characters have completely different names, but the MCU has already changed up some characters' names while maintaining the same character (i.e. Mary Jane Watson becomes Michelle Jones), so I'm not particularly concerned about that little discrepancy. So what if Kate Bishop is the version of Gwen that could have become Spider-Woman, but didn't?
Now let's think about things age-wise: Kate Bishop and Tom Holland's Peter could have been the same age. Kate is 23 in Hawkeye, and Peter is meant to be roughly 18 at the end of No Way Home - but Peter Blipped and Kate didn't, which explains how she's five years older.
Two superheroes, who pre-Blip were the same age, who both live in New York... what if they were on the same school trip?
You know the one I'm meaning. We don't see it in the MCU's Peter Parker, but the story is always that he goes on a school trip, gets bitten by the spider, becomes Spider-Man. But if Kate was with him on the same trip... that means there are two versions of how this could go:
The MCU version: Peter gets bitten and becomes Spidey, while Kate/Gwen takes an interest in archery and becomes Hawkeye.
The Spiderverse version: Kate/Gwen is the one to get bitten, and Peter ends up becoming that universe's Lizard instead (notice that the MCU/Earth-616 doesn't have a Lizard of its own either...)
But they're the same person. Genetically, multiversally, the same. Kate Bishop could have become Spider-Woman, but she missed her opportunity and Peter was bitten instead. Kate Bishop is the MCU's equivalent of Gwen Stacy.
(disclaimer that yes I know they're completely different characters and the comics are nothing like the film/TV versions, I know that Gwen and Kate have different backstories and family lives and all that, I know that Hailee Steinfeld was just cast bc she's a talented and popular actor right now, this theory is just for fun and I'm not trying to claim it's actually something Marvel is planning)

Hello, I'm Andrew Leduc And Welcome To Duke Reviews Where We Continue Our Look At The Marvel Cinematic Universe...
youtube
By Talking About Marvel's First Dive Into The Realm Of Magic, With Doctor Strange...
This Film Introduces The Talented Neurosurgeon Doctor Stephen Strange, Who After A Tragic Car Accident Must Put His Ego Aside To Learn The Secrets Of A Hidden World Of Mysticism And Alternate Dimensions. Once Learned Strange Realizes He Must Use His New Powers To Protect The World From A Deadly Enemy Who Is Out To Destroy It...
Will Strange Stop This New Enemy With The Help Of His New Allies?
Let's Find Out As We Watch Doctor Strange...
The Film Starts In Kathmandu As The Sorcerer Kaecilius (Played By Not My Hannibal Lecter) Enter The Secret Compound Of Kamar Taj And Behead It's Librarian So They Can Steal A Few Pages From An Ancient Mythical Text That Belongs To The Ancient One (Played By Tilda Swinton)...
Who Finds Kaecilius Inside Of The Library And Warns Him That The Ritual He Carries Will Only Bring Him Sorrow But Trying To Escape It Leads To A Short Fight With Kaecilius And His Followers Against The Ancient One...
youtube
(Start At 2:12, End At 3:44)
We Then Meet Doctor Stephen Strange (Played By Benedict Cumberbatch) Who Is An Arrogant, Wealthy And Acclaimed Neurosurgeon. However, After A Car Accident Severely Injures His Hands To The Point That He Can't Operate Anymore, Fellow Surgeon And Possible Ex-Girlfriend, Christine Palmer (Played By Rachel McAdams) Tries To Help Strange Move On With His Life As He Does Physical Therapy...
But Unable To Accept His New Reality, Strange Pursues Experimental Surgeries To Try To Heal His Hands And Nearly Bankrupts Himself In The Process. However, When He Hears About A Man Named Jonathan Pangborn (Played By Benjamin Bratt)...
Who's Probably Glad He's Not In A Comic Book Movie Involving Cats...
Tumblr media
Anyway, Pangborn Is A Paraplegic Who Mysteriously Regained The Use Of His Legs And Despite Hating Strange For Not Helping Him When He Came To Him For Help, He Decides To Help Him By Telling Him About Kamar Taj, But Warns Him That The Price For What He Seeks Is High...
Travelling To Kathmandu To Find Kamar Taj, Strange Eventually Meets Mordo (Played By Scar From The Remake Of The Lion King)
And Yes, I Know I Forgot To Mention In My Civil War Review That Rafiki Is Black Panther's Father But I'll Probably Mention It Again In My Eventual Review Of Black Panther That Will Happen Sooner Than I Think It Will Be...
Anyway, Strange Meets Mordo Who Takes Him To Kamar Taj To Meet The Ancient One Who (After A Bit Of Riddicule From Strange) Demonstrates Her Power Before Him Which In Itself Is One Big Acid Trip...
Though She Refuses At First To Train Strange Because She's Worried That He Is Too Much Like Kaecilius, The Ancient One Eventually Decides To Train Him At Mordo's Insistence That Kamar Taj Could Use A Man Like Strange...
And So The Training Begins...Cue Training Montage!
After Months Of Training With The Ancient One And Mordo And Borrowing Books From The Library That's Guarded By Master Wong (Played By Benedict Wong) Strange Reaches An Advanced Level, So Advanced That He Secretly Reads From The Text That Kaecilius Stole Pages From And Learning To Bend Time With The Eye Of Agamotto...
Caught By Wong And Mordo, They Warn Strange Against Breaking The Laws Of Nature, Asking How He Did That, Strange Tells Them That He Has A Photographic Memory Which Allowed Him To Get His M.D. And Ph.D At The Same Time...
Realizing That Strange Was Born For The Mystic Arts, They Decide To Tell Him The Truth, That While Heroes Like The Avengers Protect The World From Physical Dangers, They Protect Earth From More Magical Threats...
Well, If That's True Where Were You Guys During The Avengers Battle Of New York? Is Loki Not Magical?
Strange Also Learns That The Ancient One Is The Latest In A Long Line Of Sorcerer Supremes That Take Care Of 3 Buildings That Are Called Sanctums That Are In New York, London And Hong Kong Which Are All Accessible Through Kamar Taj That Act As A Shield To Protect Earth From Other Dimensional Threats...
And They In Turn Protect The Sanctums, However As They Talk The Door To The London Sanctum Opens As The Protector Enters For Them To See Him Be Killed By Kaecilius, Who During Strange's Training Has Enacted The Spell And Gained The Powers From The Dark Dimension, The Home Of Dormammu...
Tumblr media
Ok, I Realize That Some Of This Sounds Confusing But Dormammu Is The Ruler Of The Dark Dimension, A Being Of Infinite Power And Endless Hunger Who Is On A Quest To Invade Every Universe And Bring Them To The Dark Dimension...
Seeing Kaecilius, Strange, Mordo And Wong Are Unable To Stop Him From Destroying The London Sanctum But The Explosion Is So Powerful It Knocks Strange Into The New York Sanctum, While There He Looks Around Only To Eventually See Kaecilius And His Minions Enter The New York Sanctum To Kill It's Protector...
Fighting Them With The Help of His New Powers And The Help Of An Artifact There Known As The Cloak Of Levitation, Strange Manages To Capture Galen Erso For A Second So He Can Ask Him Some Questions And He Does Discover Kaecilius' Plan Which Is To Send The Earth To The Dark Dimension To Save It From The Greatest Enemy In The World, Time...
But As He Discovers This, Strange Also Learns A That The Ancient One Uses The More Powerful Magics For Herself To Keep Herself Young But As Kaecilius Continues Talking One Of His Henchmen, Stabs Strange In The Gut To The Point That He Has To Transport Himself To The Hospital To Ask Christine To Save Him...
But While She's Operating On Strange, He Passes Out But Defibrillating Him Gets Strange Out Of His Body And Into The Astral Plane So He Can Help Christine Save Him. But Followed By The Same Henchmen Who Stabbed Him In His Astral Form Leads To An Astral Battle Between Strange And The Henchmen...
Tumblr media
Eventually Defeating The Henchmen With Christine's Help, Strange Goes Back Into His Body So Christine Can Finish Healing Him As He Explains Everything To Her. But Eventually Returning To The New York Sanctum, Strange Reunites With Mordo And The Ancient One Where Strange Reveals Everything That Kaecilius Told Him About The Ancient One...
Despite The Ancient One Denying This And Mordo Knowing The Responsibility That Rests Upon The Ancient One's Shoulders, Kaecilius And His Minions Return To Try To Destroy The New York Sanctum..
But When Strange Sends Them All To The Mirror Dimension, It Leads To A Scene With Great Inception Level Effects As A Fight Scene With Strange, Mordo And The Ancient One Against Kaecilius And His Minions Happens While Also Throwing In Our Stan Lee Cameo For This Movie...
Stan Lee Cameo!
Tumblr media
As Mordo Discovers That The Ancient One Does Draw Power From The Dark Dimension, Kaecilius Stabs Her During Their Fight Which Forces Strange To Take Her Into The Hospital But As She Is Being Operated On, Strange Goes Into The Astral Plane To See The Ancient One Leaving Her Body And Headed Outside Of The Hospital...
There, The Ancient One Talks With Strange Telling Him That He Has A Great Capacity For Goodness But His Arrogance And Fear Of Failure Prevent Him From Learning The One Lesson He Needs To Learn: That It's Not About Him...
Then Why Is The Movie Called Doctor Strange?
Telling Him About How About How Pangborn Uses His Magic, She Tells Strange Before She Dies That He Will Need To Break The Rules In Order To Stop Kaecilius Even If Mordo Doesn't Like It...
Saying Goodbye To Christine, Strange Travels Back To Kamar Taj To Get Mordo, Who Blames This Entire Incident On The Ancient One, Stating That Because She Drew Energy From The Dark Dimension It Lead To The Creation Of Kaecilius And His Minions Saying That The Bill Comes Due Or In Other Words...
Tumblr media
Least That's The Way I Like To Put It...
Asking Mordo To Help Him Fight Them, They Arrive In Hong Kong Too Late, Finding Wong Dead, The Sanctum Destroyed And The Dark Dimension Starting To Engulf Earth, Using The Eye Of Agamotto To Reverse Time And Save Wong, But Realizing He Can't Stop The Inevitable, Strange Decides To Enter The Dark Dimension To Take His Case To Dormammu (Voiced By Oh, What A Surprise, Benedict Cumberbatch)...
Seriously, Benedict Just Starting In This Film Wasn't Enough You Had To Lend Your Smaug Voice To The Bad Guy?
youtube
Keeping To His Promise, Dormammu Sends Kaecilius And His Followers To The Dark Dimension As Strange Breaks The Time Loop, But Comparing Strange To The Ancient One, Mordo Renounces His Sorcerer Ways And Leaves....
Returning The Eye Of Agamotto To Kamar Taj, Strange Decides To Take Residence In The New York Sanctum To Continue His Studies With Wong As Our Movie Ends...
We Get A Mid Credits Scene Where Strange Is Visited By Thor (Played By Chris Hemsworth) Who Strange Questions Why He Is On Earth With His Brother Loki? Which Is When Thor Explains That They Are Looking For Their Father, Odin...
Asking If They Will Leave Earth After, Thor Tells Strange Yes, Which Leads Strange To Offer To Help Them...
We Also Get An End Scene, Where Mordo Confronts Pangborn And Steals The Mystic Energy He Uses To Walk As He Claims That Earth Has Too Many Sorcerers Before He Walks Off...
And That's Doctor Strange And...It's Okay...
The Story Is Confusing At Times But The Effects Are Awesome And The Cast Is Great In Their Roles Especially Cumberbatch And Edjiofor So, I Guess I Say See It...
Till Next Time, This Is Duke, Signing Off...

Doctor Strange In The Multiverse of Madness FILM REVIEW
(Review Contains Spoilers)
The Marvel Universe now has truly changed.
Dr. Strange: ITMoM stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Dr. Strange, Elizabeth Olson as The Scarlet Witch, Xochitl Gomez as America Chavez, and Rachel McAdams as Dr. Christine Palmer. The film also features Benedict Wong as Wong, Chinese Ejiofor as Baron Mordo, and a cameo from Bruce Campbell as Pizza Poppa.
Tumblr media
Benedict Cumberbatch is still doing a great job playing Dr. Strange. His character is really different from other MCU heroes. He's cool, but not completely likable. He's heroic, but also flawed. What I like about him is he's an Avenger, like Scarlet Witch, who doesn't use his fists or tech to save the day. He also faces Thanos level threats every other week, which is bound to take a toll on his psyche. He's a troubled but good man who will put his life on the line to save the multiverse any day of the week, and that's why he's a great character.
Tumblr media
I found Dr. Strange: ITMoM to be quite entertaining. Marvel in the past has tried messing with genre, and Dr. Strange: ITMoM looks to be Marvel's first horror movie. Who better to helm a horror-themed Marvel movie than Sam Raimi? His horror credentials and superhero expertise made this film so much more than your average Marvel movie. There was a lot more unique camera work in this movie compared to most Marvel films. The demon chase at the beginning gets you hooked from the start, and the thrill ride keeps going from there.
Tumblr media
I do truly believe that this movie has changed the MCU. It gave us the deep dive into the Marvel Multiverse it was supposed to. It showed how weird it can be, how terrifying it can be, and the new ways Marvel Studios writers can tell stories. This is the lead in to talking about how important The Illuminati is. It's gonna get spoilery so hold onto your butts.
Tumblr media
The Illuminati of Earth-838 features Patrick Stewart as 838-Professor X, Ejiofor as 838-Mordo, Hayley Atwell as 838-Captain Carter, Lashana Lynch as 838-Captain Marvel, Anson Mount as 838-Black Bolt, and newcomer John Krasinski as 838-Dr. Reed Richards.
Tumblr media
On Earth-838 there are no Avengers or S.H.I.E.L.D., only the Illuminati, which was created by 838-Dr. Strange. The story behind it is tragic, as well as what happened to 838-Dr. Strange. The team exists to show how powerful Scarlet Witch is. What The Illuminati means to the greater MCU is that we could be getting more versions of characters and teams. We could be getting alternate Avengers teams. We could be getting other teams like The Illuminati that would be new to the MCU. We could get a new Defenders team with an Iron Fist that is actually good. The possibilities are endless.
Tumblr media
The other main performances are all great. Newcomer Xochitl Gomez is the heart of the movie. She's funny, clever, and one of the most powerful heroes in the MCU. She is also culturally important, being the MCU's first Latino and LGBTQ+ hero. She is one of the best parts of the movie and I can't wait to see more of her in the future.
Tumblr media
One of Earth's Mightiest Heroes goes to the dark side in Dr. Strange: ITMoM. Wanda has become the Scarlet Witch and has been irreparably damaged by the events of WandaVision. She will stop at nothing, using the Darkhold and her chaos magic, to find her boys. Even if that means stealing powers and killing sorcerers. The movie does a good job filling gaps, so for people like me who haven't seen WandaVision, you're in good hands.
Tumblr media
Even the side characters were good in this movie. Wong is still his great Wong self. Rachel McAdams had to pull double duty to play both 616 and 838 Christine. Her 838 version helps Dr. Strange save the day and deal with some unresolved trauma. Maybe they will cross paths in the multiverse again. Also, Bruce Campbell's cameo is pretty funny. Campbell has had cameos in some of Raimi’s films since they worked together on the Evil Dead series. It was cool for me as a fan of The Evil Dead to see him cameo again and do something silly.
Tumblr media
Wrapping up here I thought the movie was a maddly good time. It did everything it needed to do well and it was also entertaining at the same time. Raimi did a fantastic job, becoming more so legendary as the heroes he's brought to the screen. I'm excited to see what's next for Dr. Strange, and where the multiverse takes him.

Marvel’s What If…? Episode 4 Ending Explored: The Ramifications of Doctor Strange’s Choice
https://ift.tt/3ta4kjC
With the last couple episodes of Marvel’s What If…?, I was able to speculate on the tangent realities. What would a reformed Thanos mean for Earth? Where do the loyalties lie in the war against Loki’s rule over Midgard? The show asks, “What if?” and I asked, “What’s next?”
Well…episode 4 makes that a little difficult. There is no world to expand upon. There is no future. Dr. Strange, driven by an obsession to save Christine Palmer’s life, goes way overboard and abuses time travel and magic to the point that reality collapses upon itself and all that remains is a guilt-ridden sorcerer left with nothing but consequences.
Still, the events of the episode do suggest a deeper look.
The Nexus Event
Much like Hope Van Dyne joining SHIELD in the last episode, the nexus event isn’t ever shown. What separates this world from regular continuity is actually what makes it feel so tragic and even mean spirited. The universe is doomed because Stephen Strange was a better person before his origin. He was able to keep his ego in check enough to end up in a relationship with Christine. He was better and, in the end, everyone suffers. That’s messed up.
In the movie, Strange learns a cosmic lesson about humility and comes out of it stronger. We see him get messed up from that car crash after texting while driving, we see what a dick he is, and we decide, “Hey, he got what was coming to him.” The lesson to be learned here is that, what, “Shit happens?” That pointless tragedy has to happen in order to push the narrative of the universe?
I have to wonder how the “absolute point” concept works in regards to various continuities. I imagine that if the movie version of Dr. Strange tried to go back in time and stop his accident, he’d get his hands run over by a steamroller or he’d accidentally punch a brick wall several hundred times or whatever. Reality is hellbent on making him Dr. Strange. So could the Dr. Strange from this episode set up that situation? If he somehow had the foresight to make his younger self a jerk so that he never gets too close with Christine and goes on to only lose his livelihood, would that actually work?
Animated Deconstruction
Hey, remember the Marvel Animated Cinematic Universe? Those straight-to-DVD movies that came out before the MCU was a hit? There were two Ultimate Avengers movies, a really boring Iron Man feature, a movie about the Avengers’ kids fighting Ultron, and so on? Back in 2007, there was a Dr. Strange movie. It didn’t work.
The people behind it couldn’t figure out how to make magic interesting, so all the sorcerer characters mainly fight with swords that they could summon out of thin air. At one point halfway into the movie, they mention that Dr. Strange has an innate power to absorb magic. By the end, when realizing that Dormammu is too powerful as he’s made of pure magic, Strange just remembers his ability and sucks Dormammu into his own body.
It does the job. It’s just that simple There are somehow no side-effects and the movie abruptly ends. What the hell?
I like that this animated Dr. Strange story also features him absorbing demonic and magic entities, only it’s very, very apparent that this is not healthy and not good for Strange or the world. It’s like they’re calling out that dumb ending that only I remember!
Christine Palmer
Rachel McAdams reprises her role as Christine Palmer and this episode is not kind to her. No matter how many times Strange tries, she somehow dies, like she’s the homeless man from Groundhog Day. I understand Strange’s insistence of trying new solutions to keep her from getting the Final Destination treatment, but seriously. At one point she just straight-up keels over. Seeing her get randomly shot or hit by a car is unnecessary when “just falling over and dying for reasons” is something the universe can throw at her. You’re not going to dodge that like it’s a falling piano.
What’s really messed up about this is that this Dr. Strange was able to defeat Dormammu and what’s-his-name with the weird eye makeup. The events of the movie transpired like normal. That means that Christine wasn’t even important to the events of the Dr. Strange movie. Strange’s astral form could have picked another surgeon at random and would have achieved the same results.

What If…? Episode 4 Review: Doctor Strange Loses His Heart
By Rosie Knight
TV
What If…? Episode 3 Review: The Avengers Initiative Is DOA
By Kirsten Howard
Jesus. The fridging was bad enough, but now the episode is calling her worthless. Maybe melting this universe was for the better.
Speaking of worthless: way to go, Mordo! You ended up being totally right about everything and you’re not even doing anything to stop Strange. You trying to wipe out all the sorcerers is like me using my Nintendo Ring Fit. I talk a mean game about how hard I’m going to work out, but I know I’m just going to sit on the couch and watch Critic reruns.
Uatu the Watcher
Our host for What If…? gets a juicier role this time around. He’s spent several episodes hiding in the background, narrating the stories while only noticed by the viewer. In this episode, as the corrupt Dr. Strange was in the middle of eating demon souls, he was briefly aware that Uatu was in the room, discussing his refusal to intervene.
This comes off like Uatu’s #1 power move from the comics: showing up and not doing anything for the sake of letting everyone know that this is a big deal. If you’re a superhero and you see a giant bald man in a toga just standing around minding his own, it means that something historically important is going on. Of course, that negates the purpose of Uatu’s vow. Just by standing there, he’s interfering by tipping everyone off about the severity of the situation.
Later on, when reality started to collapse, Strange called out to Uatu for help. Not only was Strange able to see him, but he had already studied his existence and understood who he was dealing with. Uatu refused to help and called him out for fucking up on such a major level. This whole continuity was destroyed because a man tried to play God and Uatu used it to support his argument to never get involved.
Yet it looks like that might be something he’ll be doing soon enough. One of the What If…? trailers had a very quick but memorable shot of various alternate heroes posing together like the iconic Avengers circle sequence. At the very least we see Black Panther (Killmonger?), Gamora (dressed as Thanos), and the T’Challa version of Star-Lord working together in the ruins of New York City. Signs point to a big What If…? crossover for the finale.
Signs point to Uatu the Watcher putting it together, choosing life over oath.

The same promotional materials show that we haven’t seen the last of this Dr. Strange. Whether that’s a good thing or not for the multiverse, we’ll find out soon enough.

An up-to-date look at the next phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe
Tumblr media
Photo by Alberto E. Rodriguez/Getty Images for Disney
Expect a lot of sequels.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe closed out its “Infinity Saga” last summer with the releases of Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: Far From Home, which ended a 23-film cycle of big, ambitious, and thrilling storytelling. Despite what felt like a logical beginning, middle and end to its first few phases of films, Disney and Marvel have no plans to slow down anytime soon.
Captain America, Iron Man, and some of the other key Avengers from the last decade-plus are now set aside for characters stepping forward into bigger roles — such as Black Panther and Captain Marvel — and characters we have not seen in this iteration of films yet. With Disney’s merger with Fox, characters like the X-Men and Fantastic Four are on the way with Marvel Studios now having the rights to the majority of the storied comic company’s intellectual property. This comes after decades of heroes’ film rights being divided among several studios.
Here is the full list of projects that are currently in development for the next phases of the MCU.
Theatrical Releases
Black Widow (November 6, 2020)
There had been rumors for years that Scarlett Johansson would get her own solo film and now it is set to lead Marvel’s “Phase Four” as the first-post Infinity Saga movie. However, this film is set to take place between Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War. Other cast members include David Harbour, Rachel Weisz and Florence Pugh, among others. Taskmaster will be the villain in this movie, who is known for his ability to copy the powers of the heroes he is facing.
The Eternals (February 12, 2021)
Marvel is never afraid to throw something new and weird at its audience, and did so with massive success with the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise. The Eternals is set to tell the story of a race of human-god aliens created by beings called Celestials that have lived on Earth for 7,000 years among us. The cast includes Richard Madden, Kumail Nanjiani, Angeline Jolie, Gemma Chan, Lauren Ridloff, Salma Hayek, Brian Tyree Henry, Lia McHugh, and Kit Harington, to name a few from the massive lineup. Chloé Zhao will helm the film.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (May 7, 2021)
The MCU has a way of existing as genre films inside of a superhero film packaging. To name a few examples, we have seen political thrillers (Captain America: The Winter Soldier) and heist films (Ant-Man), but now Marvel steps into its first kung fu-inspired take. Shang-Chi is a master of the martial arts and will be played by relative newcomer Simu Liu. We have actually heard of the Ten Rings before, as they were the terrorist organization introduced when Tony Stark was kidnapped in Iron Man. Then, we met its leader, The Mandarin, in Iron Man 3. Except we didn’t because that was a fake out. Tony Leung is set to play the “real” Mandarin and Awkwafina is also set for a role in the film, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton.
Untitled Spider-Man Sequel (November 5, 2021)
Things were dicey here for a bit with Disney and Sony, who owns Spider-Man’s film rights, having a contract dispute in the summer of 2019. However, both sides came to an agreement and Tom Holland’s Spidey is back on track with Zendaya also set to return and Jon Watts directing once again.
Thor: Love and Thunder (February 11, 2022)
Thor is one of the only original Avengers set to play a role in the next phase of films and both Chris Hemsworth and director Taika Waititi are set to return. Tessa Thompson will also return as Valkyrie and Natalie Portman is making her return to the role of Jane Foster in the film. Foster is set to become the female version of Thor in this next installment with Christian Bale making his MCU debut as the film’s villain, though we do not yet know who he is playing.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (March 25, 2022)
Doctor Strange’s solo outing was solid, but did not do a ton to movie the needle among MCU fans. That changed with the key role that he played in both Infinity War and Endgame and now he is back for another film centered around him. This time, Benedict Cumberbatch’s Strange will be joined by another Marvel hero in the form of Scarlet Witch, played by Elizabeth Olsen. Benedict Wong is set to return as Wong with Chiwetel Ejiofor also back to play Karl Mordo. The events of this film will be tied into the Scarlet Witch Disney+ series WandaVision (which we will discuss here a bit later). The film will be directed by Sam Raimi of the Evil Dead franchise and the 2000s Spider-Man films.
Black Panther II (May 6, 2022)
When Black Panther became the cultural phenomenon it was after coming out in February of 2018 — eventually earning a Best Picture nomination at the Oscars — it was only a matter of time before we got a sequel. Not much is known about the project other than Ryan Coogler returning to direct and the expectation is that the majority of the cast from the last film should return, as well. The rumor is that the sequel may feature Namor, who actually preceded Aquaman as the Atlantean/human hybrid character in pop culture.
Untitled Captain Marvel Sequel (July 8, 2022)
The only thing that is known about this film is that Brie Larson is set to reprise her role as the titular hero. Seeing as her solo film took place in the 90s and Endgame brought her into the present day, there is no shortage of possibilities for what her next outing might look like.
Unscheduled theatrical projects
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3
After a brief brush with controversy over old tweets that saw James Gunn fired from the job of directing this movie, all sides came to an agreement and he was brought back. This is expected to close out the story thread of his iteration of the Guardians, but it is going to have to wait until he finishes work on DC’s The Suicide Squad, which he signed on to direct when he was originally fired by Marvel.
Untitled Ant-Man and The Wasp Sequel
A more recent addition to the upcoming slate of films with news of its development dropping in April 2020. Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lilly are expected to be back in their roles, and Peyton Reed will be back to direct after doing the last two films.
Blade
This was the surprise of all surprises when its development was announced at San Diego Comic-Con 2019. Mahershala Ali will be playing the role after lobbying Marvel to bring back the character, and the Oscar winner reaching out was too good for the studio to pass up. That is all we know about this film for now, but it has fans of the vampire hunter excited to see what Ali and the studio can come up with.
Fantastic Four
It is only a matter of time before we get to see Marvel’s iconic foursome of heroes hit the screen again after the Disney-Fox merger went through. After a few “meh” outings in the mid-2000s and a putrid reboot attempt in 2015, the characters are back where they belong. All we know so far is that the studio is developing the project with no other details available at this time. Fans have been clamoring for the real-life couple of John Krasinski and Emily Blunt to play Reed Richards and Sue Storm, respectively. You can add my name to the list of people who would love to see that casting.
X-Men
We are probably far away from the X-Men making their debut in the MCU, which is not the worst thing in the world. Fox’s franchise ran for almost 20 years and it is going to take some time for people to cleanse their pallets of the Hugh Jackman/Patrick Stewart-era of characters. They are on the way, but it is going to take some time and they might be the last of these projects that we see on the screen.
Disney+ Shows
These will appear exclusively on the Disney+ streaming platform, but Marvel maintains they will have cinematic budgets and that everything will connect to the theatrical releases, so this is a brand new layer to the MCU.
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (August 2020)
Now that Black Widow has been pushed to the fall, this is the next MCU property we are set to see. This series is set to follow Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) and Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) after the events of Endgame, where an old Captain America passed his shield and mantle on to Wilson. Daniel Brühl is set to return as Helmut Zemo of Civil War fame and Emily VanCamp returning as Sharon Carter. Wyatt Russell joins the cast as John Walker, the U.S. government created successor to Steve Rogers.
WandaVision (December 2020)
As we mentioned before, this series is set to lead into the events of the Doctor Strange sequel with Wanda Maximoff involved in a big way. Paul Bettany is also set to return as Vision, as it appears that Wanda has created an alternate reality where they can live together among the backdrop of sitcom-style settings from multiple decades (yeah, it’s going to get really dang weird). An adult version of Monica Rambeau, who was a child in Captain Marvel, is set to debut and be played by Teyonah Parris. Randall Park and Kat Dennings are going to return to the MCU in their roles of Jimmy Woo and Darcy Lewis, respectively.
Loki (Early 2021)
Loki stealing the Tesseract in an alternate timeline in Endgame screamed Disney+ series, and now Marvel is doing just that. The series will see Tom Hiddleston reprising his role as the God of Mischief as an alternate version of his 2012 self traveling back in time and altering history. Owen Wilson and Richard E. Grant are also set to join in some form or fashion.
What If...? (Mid-2021)
This is going to be an animated anthology series that explores how events of the MCU would have happened by changing different variables, a la if Peggy Carter was given the super soldier serum instead of Steve Rogers. The original actors from MCU films will return to reprise their roles in a voice acting capacity for the series, which will star Jeffrey Wright as The Watcher. A second season has already been greenlit, as well.
Hawkeye (2022)
A limited series is set to come for the bow-and-arrow wielder with Jeremy Renner reprising his role as Clint Barton, which would see him pass on his mantle of Hawkeye to Kate Bishop (reportedly to be portrayed by Hailee Steinfeld).
Ms. Marvel (2022)
Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel has been a recent character in the comics with rapidly growing popularity among fans. Not a whole lot is out there on the series other than Bisha K. Ali being hired as the head writer. It is also possible Ms. Marvel is introduced in Captain Marvel’s sequel.
Moon Knight (2022)
Moon Knight is Marvel’s answer to Batman, except he has a dissociative identity disorder. So ... that’s an interesting concept. In addition to his Disney+ series, Moon Knight will be appearing in future MCU films, as well.
She-Hulk (2022)
She-Hulk is set to revolve around Jennifer Walters, the cousin of Bruce Banner/Hulk who gains powers after receiving a blood transfusion from him. Walters is a skilled lawyer and has often appeared as representation to heroes and other enhanced beings over the years. Another ... interesting concept. Marvel is reportedly looking for an “Alison Brie-type” to play this character. The lead writer on the series is set to be Jessica Gao of Rick and Morty fame.

Infinity War And Endgame Moments That Made Doctor Strange More Interesting
Doctor Strange is a fascinating character. His powers are mind-boggling, he’s amusingly arrogant, he has an Infinity Stone dangling around his neck, and he’s played by the effortlessly charming Benedict Cumberbatch. However, Strange’s 2016 MCU solo movie was a pretty formulaic origin story that failed to drum up a huge amount of interest in the character. Fortunately, his subsequent appearances in the next two Avengers movies, Infinity War and Endgame, made better use of his powers and characterization to make him more interesting to moviegoers. So, here are 10 Infinity War And Endgame Moments That Made Doctor Strange More Interesting.
RELATED: Doctor Strange 2: 5 Things It Needs To Improve From The First One (& 5 It Should Keep The Same)
10 Seeing 14 million alternate futures
Tumblr media
Avengers: Infinity War is a prime example of MacGuffins in practice. The movie has six mystical objects that the villain is trying to collect. That gave the movie a plot, and also tied together all the characters. Gamora was the only one who knew where the Soul Stone was, Vision had the Mind Stone in his head, Loki had secretly nabbed the Space Stone from Asgard etc. Doctor Strange was a key part of this, as the sworn protector of the Time Stone. Before Thanos arrived on Titan, Strange used the Time Stone to see 14,000,605 alternate futures – and only one where the Avengers won. Here, Strange was used to telegraph the stakes of the movie.
9 Tricking Thanos on Titan
Tumblr media
The skirmish on Titan is one of the most exciting sequences in Avengers: Infinity War. A lot of people hate Peter Quill for screwing up the plan to take the Infinity Gauntlet from Thanos, but let’s be honest – even if they’d managed to get it off his hand and keep it off, it wouldn’t have been off for long. At one point, there’s a quiet moment in the conflict as the Mad Titan attempts to remove the Time Stone from around Doctor Strange’s neck. Strange tricks Thanos by scattering his own physical consciousness like a deck of cards, so there are dozens of Doctor Strange copies floating around.
8 “Oh, congratulations on the wedding, by the way.”
Tumblr media
Stephen Strange might be arrogant and egotistical – it is his defining flaw, as identified by the Ancient One (and Christine Palmer and Wong and Karl Mordo and just about everybody else) in his initial 2016 solo outing – but he can be polite on the odd occasion.
RELATED: MCU: 10 Ways Pepper Potts Could Return In The Future
When Bruce Banner arrives at the Sanctum Sanctorum to warn Doctor Strange and Wong about Thanos’ imminent arrival, the Sorcerer Supreme transports himself to Central Park, where Tony Stark and Pepper Potts are out for a walk. Strange tells Tony to come with him, but not before congratulated the couple on their highly publicized wedding.
7 Holding off a tidal wave during the Battle of Earth
Tumblr media
The final battle sequence in Avengers: Endgame has since been dubbed “the Battle of Earth” by official Marvel canon. That’s a step up from the first Avengers movie’s Battle of New York (although this one did also take place in New York – upstate this time). Midway through the battle, the barrier protecting the warzone from the ocean broke and the water started flooding in. So, Doctor Strange stepped in to hold it off, pushing it up into the air in a kind of whirlpool. This prevented him from having the much-anticipated rematch with Thanos, but it also saved our heroes from getting swept away.
6 Creating a shield to protect the surrounding Avengers from Thanos’ warship
Tumblr media
When Thanos realizes he’s losing the Battle of Earth to the Avengers, he orders his soldiers to open fire from his warship hovering in the sky. His generals warn him about his own troops, who will be killed in the fire, and Thanos tells them to do it anyway. So, Doctor Strange, Wong, and the other Masters of the Mystic Arts quickly create mystical shields to protect everybody. The shields won’t hold of the fire from Thanos’ warship forever, but that’s when a beam of light comes thundering through the sky and crashing through the ship, disabling its weapons systems and bringing it down. It’s Captain Marvel!
5 “Is that everyone?”
Tumblr media
At the beginning of the final battle in Avengers: Endgame, the Masters of the Mystic Arts open up portals to allow hundreds of warriors onto the battleground to back up Captain America. And then Doctor Strange asks, “Is that everyone?” and Wong sarcastically replies, “What, you wanted more?” Props to the Russo brothers for choosing this moment to have Scott Lang enlarge himself from under the wreckage of Avengers HQ, having saved Rocket, the Hulk, and War Machine, and put them down alongside everyone else on the battlefield. Strange wanted more, despite having dozens of armies from all over the universe, and against all odds, he got more at that exact moment.
4 Helping Peter Quill to fight Thanos
Tumblr media
Screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely chose their teams wisely when they penned Avengers: Infinity War. Tony Stark and Peter Parker developed their father-son relationship, Tony’s witty banter with fellow arrogant hero Stephen Strange was a lot of fun, and the Guardians of the Galaxy were thrown in for good measure. Strange used his powers to help Peter Quill fight Thanos. First, he gave him mystical stepping stones that carried him over to Thanos, and then he opened up a portal for Quill to disappear away from the Mad Titan’s grasp. As he hopped into the portal, he took a second to remove his mask, show Thanos his goofy, insulting facial expression, and flip him the finger.
3 Giving up the Time Stone to save Tony Stark’s life
Tumblr media
“We’re in the endgame now.” Thanos was about to kill Tony Stark when Stephen Strange stopped him and relinquished the Time Stone. He had said earlier that he would happily let Tony die to protect the Time Stone, and now, he was handing it over to Thanos willingly to save Tony’s life – he didn’t even seem to be reluctant to do it.
RELATED: Avengers: Endgame: 10 Times A Whole New Timeline Was Created During Time Heist
This is the moment that set up the sequel. The one scenario where the Avengers won that Strange saw involved Thanos succeeding in his plan. There was no way he wasn’t getting all the Stones and snapping his fingers. Tony needed to be alive to invent time travel and bring everybody back.
2 “If I tell you what happens, it won’t happen.”
Tumblr media
MCU fans went into Avengers: Endgame knowing that whatever happened had been prophesized by Doctor Strange when he saw 14 million versions of the future and only found one where Earth’s mightiest heroes eventually triumphed over Thanos. We know that it involved Tony Stark in a major way, because Strange traded away the Time Stone in order to keep him alive. On the battleground at the end of Endgame, Tony said to Strange, “You said one out of 14 million, we win, yeah? Tell me this is it,” and Strange gravely told him, “If I tell you what happens, it won’t happen.”
1 Opening the portals to bring everybody to the battleground
Tumblr media
There are many incredible moments in Avengers: Endgame that made it the highest grossing movie of all time. If it wasn’t for those moments, there’s a chance that not enough viewers would want to rewatch the movie for it to topple Avatar as the box office king. Arguably, the most breathtaking moment in the whole three-hour epic sees Doctor Strange and the Masters of the Mystic Arts opening up portals to bring all the resurrected characters onto the battleground on the rubble of Avengers HQ to give a lone Captain America some backup. This moment sums up the entire MCU.

Doctor Strange: 10 Fan Theories About Scarlet Witch's Role In The Multiverse Of Madness
The sequel to 2016’s Doctor Strange was finally confirmed at this year’s Comic-Con for a 2021 release. Marvel Studios announced that the movie would be called Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and, as many fans suspected, Scarlet Witch will be joining the Sorcerer Supreme in his latest adventure.
RELATED: Doctor Strange 2: 10 Things We Want To See
Nothing is confirmed about the magical mutant’s role in the film yet, other than the fact that her upcoming Disney+ series WandaVision will tie into it somehow, so for now, it’s anybody’s guess. So, here are 10 Fan Theories About Scarlet Witch’s Role In Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness.
10 Wanda Maximoff will be Stephen Strange’s apprentice
Tumblr media
Wanda’s ongoing character arc in the MCU has seen her struggling to control her powers. There was the incident in Nigeria that got her locked in her room, of course, and she’s generally been struggling to come to terms with what the Hydra scientists did to her in Sokovia.
Since Stephen Strange has got his magical powers under control, perhaps he’ll take on Wanda as an apprentice in his solo sequel. By taking her on as a student, he’ll be able to teach her how to focus her mind and control her sorcery in the same way that the Ancient One did with him in his first film.
9 She’ll be the first target of Karl Mordo’s literal witch hunt
Tumblr media
In the post-credits scene of Doctor Strange, Karl Mordo approached Jonathan Pangborn and told him there were “too many sorcerers” in the world before stripping him of his magical powers.
While it could go the way of all those other forgotten MCU teases, this seemed to set up a villain role in the sequel where Mordo would track down everyone on Earth will magical abilities and rob them of them. Since Wanda Maximoff has magical powers that are dangerously unstable, perhaps she’ll be Mordo’s first target, and this will explain why Stephen Strange decides to take her under his wing in the sequel.
8 Scarlet Witch will become a Master of the Mystic Arts
Tumblr media
Out of the dozens of characters that appeared in the final battle sequence of Avengers: Endgame, the Masters of the Mystic Arts were featured prominently. One can only assume that between the Hulk’s un-snappening and the opening of those portals, Doctor Strange traveled to all the other Masters to tell them where to go, who to bring, and where to bring them.
RELATED: Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness: 5 MCU Characters We Want To See Return (& 5 We Don't)
Perhaps this team will be explored in greater detail in the Doctor Strange sequel, as they face threats from other dimensions that none of them can handle alone, and Wanda Maximoff will become a Master of the Mystic Arts herself.
7 She’ll do battle with Chthon
Tumblr media
Training with Doctor Strange might get Scarlet Witch in touch with her reality-tweaking powers, which could lead to the introduction of the horrifying Chthon character. Chthon is a Lovecraftian being called an Elder God.
In the Marvel Comics universe, he comes from “the primordial void,” which is essentially the dark abyss between realities, which means there’s a good chance he’ll be introduced to the MCU via the multiverse in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. As a terrifying demonic creature, he’d make the perfect villain for what is being referred to as the MCU’s first bona fide horror movie.
6 She’ll officially be named Scarlet Witch
Tumblr media
With the Hydra scientists that created them calling them “the twins” and the Avengers using their given names, Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch have never been named in the MCU. Quicksilver is long gone, so that name can be saved for when the X-Men version of the character joins the franchise, but Wanda can still be given her superhero name.
In Infinity War, when Peter Parker introduced himself to Stephen Strange with his real name, Strange used his “made-up name,” showing that he cares a lot about superhero monikers. So, maybe he’ll officially give Wanda the name Scarlet Witch for the first time.
5 Stephen Strange brings back Quicksilver
Tumblr media
One fan theory about Scarlet Witch in Doctor Strange 2 involves her doing something to save Stephen Strange’s life. He’ll be so grateful to her that he’ll offer to do her any favor she asks in return. Then, she’ll ask him if there’s any way to bring back her dead twin brother Pietro. Some magic later, Quicksilver will be back.
Any reader of comic books knows that dead characters are never really dead. This would be the MCU’s first instance of bringing a character who was definitely, definitively dead back to life more than half a decade after they “died forever.” The only other example is Loki, but he wasn’t resurrected – he stole the Space Stone and disappeared into another timeline.
4 Her role will be like Black Widow’s in The Winter Soldier
Tumblr media
Some fans are suggesting that Scarlet Witch’s role in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will be similar to that of Black Widow in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. It’ll be more than a cameo appearance, and something of a sidekick role, but nothing major enough to steal focus from the hero whose name is in the title.
Scarlet Witch is an amazing character in the comics and it would be great to see her get her own movie one day, but Doctor Strange’s movie is just that. Captain America: Civil War ended up feeling like Avengers 2.5 and Iron Man 4 rolled into one – Doctor Strange 2 can’t fall into that trap.
3 It’s a stepping stone to her own movie
Tumblr media
The fact that Wanda is getting her own series on Disney+ and a co-starring role in Doctor Strange’s standalone sequel in the same year shows that Marvel is eager to explore this character further. Thus far in the MCU, she’s been pretty boring, but that’s only because the filmmakers haven’t really known what to do with her.
RELATED: Avengers: 10 MCU Characters Who Deserve A Solo Movie After Endgame
The character has some fascinating storylines in the comics that the MCU could easily explore. Maybe her Disney+ series and Doctor Strange 2 appearance are stepping stones to rekindling audience interest in Scarlet Witch before she gets her own solo movie in Phase 5.
2 She causes the titular multiversal madness
Tumblr media
After the multiverse fake-out of Spider-Man: Far From Home, in which Quentin Beck promised to be from another version of reality fighting interdimensional monsters and turned out to be full of it, fans were relieved when the multiverse premise wasn’t dropped entirely and Doctor Strange 2 was confirmed to be diving into it.
In the comics, Scarlet Witch’s powers have links to the fabric of reality and she’s been known to create alternate timelines completely of her own volition. So, maybe the multiversal madness of the sequel’s title refers to Scarlet Witch becoming so powerful that she loses touch with reality.
1 It’ll set up the “House of M” storyline
Tumblr media
Although the MCU will need to wait a few years for the dust to settle on Thanos’ devastating finger-snap – no pun intended – the franchise will eventually need another Infinity War-sized event to lead towards. There’s one theory that the next big storyline tackled by the MCU will be “House of M.”
This is an X-Men storyline in which Scarlet Witch loses her children, has a mental breakdown, and tries to alter the fabric of reality in order to bring them back, which leads to overwhelming problems for the wider universe. Avengers: Endgame co-writer Stephen McFeely has discussed a “House of M” adaptation as a possibility, and it makes sense that it would be the next big event with the X-Men joining the MCU in the coming years.
