Nina and I were watching a terrible Christmas romcom and Nina was speaking on the evils of terrible set design and she was like “that school those teachers are in is so terrible” and I was like “why it looks like a real school” and Nina goes “it IS a real school but it doesn’t look like a school those teachers would work at. they would decorate their rooms differently. It has to match” and I was very shook!

#it made me want to direct a hallmark romcom where I made the actors sit down and think through their characters—what they would wear.#how they would decorate their classroom as a character #and build some of that personality in there #and it was so interesting because the choice of the school could have worked for a different story!!!!#If jim jarmusch or Steven soderbergh were filming there. but then the characters and the costumes would match #there’s an increasing bleakness to the contrast of that (incredibly annoying basic white girl) perfectly stylized hair #and some random ass elementary school they’ve plopped down as the background #and it’s like. yeah. characters who care this much about their hair would also have decorated their space!#I just love that. it can be ugly and it can be tacky because that exists but it just has to be consistent #I am thinking a lot about world building with regard to romcoms/basic love stories #a hallmark movie has none and that’s what hurts to watch #but if there were some loving effort and thought extended (even with a low budget) the whole production would start to change
