black magnolias II - rafe cameron x reader

you’d met rafe before you met anyone else.
your mom grew up with his father and the two of them were good friends during childhood. she’d told you the stories of their life in the cut, how she looked out for him, and he did the same for her. how she believed in him when nobody else did, taking days off school to work extra shifts just so he could have the money to get everything he needed before he went off to college.
you were sure that they were much more than friends, but you never questioned her about it too deeply. it was none of you business; both of them were married to other people, anyways. they’d kept in touch over the years and rekindled their friendship when he moved back to kildare.
as you got older, you wondered if he felt guilty for leaving your mom behind. if all the things he did for you and your family was some way to make himself feel better. he paid for your grade school tuition and covered whatever your scholarship didn’t in high school. he got your mom a job working for cameron development–it paid way more than what she made at her old one. you remember going to holiday parties a couple times a year at tannyhill when you were younger; running around with other kids and playing by the water while your mother scolded you not to get too close.
you wondered if your mother fell deeper into religion after his passing, but once again, you never questioned it.
that was when rafe found you. before he became the monster that everyone knows him as, he was just a regular boy. he was sweet and funny. he never looked down his nose at you for being from the cut. corruption and heartbreak had not yet found him, and that was the rafe you knew. the one you loved. the lines of friendship and intimacy had blurred at some point in your time knowing him.
maybe it was his mom leaving that broke him, or his dad taking his grief and anger out on him that changed everything. maybe it was the popularity, the drugs, or understanding the power of money as he grew older. you weren’t sure when things went so wrong.
that was when kiara became your life vest. she was the only one that didn’t judge you for being a pogue. rafe didn’t, but he was turning into something you didn’t like anymore. someone you didn’t recognize.
it was also when you met jj. he was like rafe in a lot of ways; blonde, short-tempered, and impulsive. daddy issues and no mom, lost in the world and using drugs to escape the pain of their reality. another pair of sad, blue eyes that sucked you into their depths. another line blurred.
when you turned to face rafe you nearly gasped, teeth biting down on the soft flesh of your tongue to keep the sound from escaping. his icy blue eyes bore into your wide, nervous ones. the two orbs traveled down the entirety of your body in a way that gave you goosebumps everywhere they landed.
he looked just as you remembered; tall, handsome, and fear-inducing. your heart was beating against your ribcage violently as you fought to stay still, feet planted firmly into the soft sand beneath you. the man made your skin prickle from being too close but you refused to move.
“oh, rafe, you’re still alive.” you voice barely quivered, unnoticeable to everyone except him. you hated the way he could feel the nerves radiating off of you in waves. it was the one thing he was the best at; reading you. “that’s…gotta be good for somebody, i guess.”
“don’t be like that,” his teeth were the same bright white that they always were, perfect and blinding as they bared down in a sinister smile. while rafe’s tone was light and teasing on the surface, you could clearly sense something beneath it that had you swallowing thickly. “you know you missed me.”
you didn’t dignify that statement with a response.
looking past him at the brunette girl watching from a distance, you studied her closely. your brow twitched upward reflexively, eyes catching hers as the two of you stared each other down. she didn’t look familiar to you at all, but it was clear that she knew who rafe was if her glaring was any indication.
she was pretty; her tanned skin glowing under the burning sun and shoulder length waves blowing in the slight breeze.
the girl looked nothing like you.
“doesn’t seem like you missed me.” you hummed in response.
rafe turned his head, eyes following yours to find the dark-haired girl on the other end of your gaze.
she tore away from the staredown to meet the steely-blue of the man before you and smiled, her teeth just as perfect as the person she was showing them off to. rafe barely reacted to her display, simply gifting her a slight nod of acknowledgment before turning back to you.
“nah, she’s just…”he shook his head in denial, tongue escaping his mouth to wet his chapped lips. “we’re just friends. nothing serious.”
you shrugged at him nonchalantly, the sound of your friends clearing their throats behind you serving as a reminder of how uncomfortable they must be with him so close after everything that’s happened. you felt sarah grab your hand, her fingers knitting with yours.
“i don’t care if you’re friends, more than friends–whatever you wanna call it.” your tone was dismissive and slightly cold, a nautical edge to your voice as you bit the words out. “we aren’t together anymore. you don’t have to explain yourself to me.”
as much as you wish the words that left your mouth were true; they weren’t.
you missed him. as messed up as it was, you missed rafe in ways that you knew you shouldn’t. ways that would get you shunned by your friends if you were to ever confess to them. the man had done the worst things imaginable to all of the pogues, including you. it made no sense to be jealous of some girl that he may, or may not, be dating now, especially given how the two of you ended things.
yet, you could feel your stomach turning at the thought of it.
of course you hated him for what he did to your friends, to you. he showed you what kind of person he was hiding beneath the surface of what he put on display to you. but you’d be lying to yourself if you said you didn’t still think about him late at night; about what could have been had things not gone south the way they did. you standing in front of him and all your friends, telling him that you don’t care who he talks to anymore, was a lie.
but you still do it. you still do it because, what other choice did you have?
“yeah, right. i’m not,” he nodded in agreement with you about not needing to defend his actions. “jus’ didn’t want anyone getting the wrong idea.”
“right…” you replied monotonously.
kiara cleared her throat behind you, subtly letting you know that the interaction had been going on for far too long. you don’t stop her and sarah from pulling you away from rafe without any goodbye, the conversation ending as abruptly as it started.
“nice seeing you, y/n.” rafe’s voice was loud enough to be heard over the buzz of the surrounding crowd. he didn’t need to raise his volume, but he did nothing without reason. he knew who was there at the beach and he wanted them to hear, wanted them to know exactly who he was talking to.
the buzzed-blonde was met with silence once again. his gaze was both scorching and chilling, the feeling of his watchful eyes on your back as you retreated to find the rest of your friends. you were sweating, both from your anxiety and the bright sun beating down onto the sand.
cleo was kneeling into the soft ground fiddling with jj’s bike with pope and john b not too far away. you didn’t notice jj had been watching the whole time until your eyes met, his brows furrowed and a look of interrogation behind the pale blue. white knuckles gripped the rim of his helmet–he was angry.
you’d started picking at your nails nervously, already knowing the conversation that was in store.
“what was that?” the shaggy-haired boy immediately confronted you as soon as you were within earshot. you shrugged, avoiding eye contact. jj scoffed at your refusal to answer verbally and set the helmet down on the seat of the old bike. “don’t give me that shit, y/n. what was that?”
the other pogues watched you two closely, the tension thick and salty in the air.
“it was nothing, jj, chill out.” you said defensively.
“it didn’t look like ‘nothing’ to me.”
“okay, well,” you scoffed at the boy and finally raised your head to meet his scrutinizing gaze. “that's what it was. so…”
he didn’t seem to appreciate that answer. jj laughed humorously, the dry sound escaping his mouth in a bark of irritation. sensing another verbal brawl on the rise, pope was close behind his friend, body tense as he prepared to pull the boy away before things got out of hand.
“jj, it’s not that serious.” pope said gently into his ear in an effort to calm him down. “just let it go.”
“she’s talking to rafe cameron! that sounds pretty fucking serious to me.”
the brown-skinned boy stumbled back stlight as jj shoved him off his shoulder. cleo stood from her position on the ground at the commotion and kiara tensed beside you.
“jj, back off.” kiara spoke up. underneath the softness of her voice was a warning. you weren’t sure for what, but it was something that made the blond shake his head, clearly frustrated and displeased by the lack of anyone on his side.
not wanting to participate in another standoff with your friend, you let your legs carry you off somewhere safe from the fuming teen. familiar voices reprimanded him for his outburst but became more muffled the farther away you got, lost in the sound of all the commotion of the race.
jj hated rafe cameron. all of the pogues hated the kook prince, it was a given considering all that he had done, but jj despised him.
before the gold changed everything about your lives, before sarah and cleo, jj had harbored a deep hatred of the eldest cameron child. not because he was entitled and classist; most kooks were like that, it came with the territory. no–it was because he was jealous.
jj was jealous because no matter what rafe did, no matter how many times he sent you to his doorstep teary-eyed and stuttering, or feverish with a core-deep anger, you wouldn’t leave him. he thought rafe was not good for you, and maybe he was right, but you didn’t care then. you truly believed the boy would come to his senses some day, and you didn’t care how long you had to wait.
you never meant to string jj along, but deep in the back of your mind you knew you were.
it broke him to know that he would always come second as long as rafe was around. eventually he moved on to someone he could love without heartache, and that someone happened to be your best friend. his feelings for you never went away, and everyone knew it, even if they all pretended not to. including you. the guilt consumes you less that way.
the longing stares and lingering touches. the hesitant, curious kisses shared in the chateau’s backyard while everyone else was fast asleep. cleaning him up after bad scuff-ups with luke and letting him stay over at your house. the soft moonlight casting over you as you embraced each other beneath your covers, nimble fingers reaching up to wipe the silent tears that fell from his eyes. all distant memories that you both tried to forget about completely to keep the integrity of your; to salvage whatever remained.
but in that moment of jj confronting you, everyone saw what was beneath all the smoke and mirrors. rafe was stirring up trouble on purpose–he always did.
so it was no surprise that when the racers came back around for their final lap, with jj in the lead and rafe close on his tail, something had to happen to ruin the peace.
“c’mon jayj!” kiara shouted at the boy speeding down the sand trail. “you got it, baby!”
“let’s go jj…” you whispered to yourself, far too sick to let the words leave your mouth fully. your were gnawing on your manicured fingernails, noting in your mind that they would need to be redone before the weekend ended and you had to be back at work.
what the hell is rafe doing?
the older one was dangerously close to your friend. the wheels of his bike were nipping at jj’s as he made an effort to overtake his lead. john b wasn’t too far behind, but topper was on him too, the two boys fighting to get the best of each other amongst the rest of the group.
a wave of shock washed over the crowd as rafe rammed into jj, the pair of blonds flying out of their seats and landing harshly in the sand. a hand flew to your mouth to muffle your gasp. there was barely time to react before the large group of bikes not too far behind came full speed towards the finish line, engines roaring just as loud as the throng of people around you. you barely noticed topper crossing the finish line, too busy rushing out to check on the boy writhing in pain.
before you could reach them, jj shoved john b off of him in anger.
your brows furrowed together in concern, the sight of the scuffle both worrying and sending confusion through you. jj made eye contact with you from the distance and threw his helmet down before stalking off, everyone staring after him with a puzzled and disappointed expression.
“get used to it!” your head whipped around to see rafe pushing off the ground, his black racing suit covered in sand. he was clearly in pain, a hand cradling his neck and a slight limp in his stride as he approached the cheering crowd.
“what’d you say?” john b heard him as well, furious eyes searching for rafe’s figure momentarily. he stomped up to him and shoved the taller roughly as he spoke. “hey, what’d you say? huh?”
“john b!” you called out to him as you briskly walked towards the commotion. “john b, no! just leave it alone.”
rafe shoved him in return, the brunette stumbling backwards from the attack. sarah got in between them before it got any further, the blonde pushing the two boys out of the way as she scolded her brother.
“you could have killed each other!” she yelled, teeth bared and face red with rage.
rafe’s face was mostly stoic, eyes rolling just barely at his sister’s words.
“yeah, like you give a shit.”
sarah almost looked offended, but she didn’t respond immediately.
“you gonna kill me, like you killed dad?”
“rafe!” you finally spoke up in defense of your friend, mouth dropping open in disbelief at the words that fell from his lips. “what the fuck is your problem?”
you followed behind him when he kept walking, strides long to keep up with his own. the brunette girl he claimed to be “just friends” with was waiting for him a short distance away and you watched as his arms wrapped around her, celebrating as if he’d won the race.
your jaw clenched as envy clawed its way up your spine.
“why do you have to do that?” your eyes were hard as you stared him down from your spot on the beach. disgust was etched into your face, hackles raising as the girl leaned into his side with a content look on her. “you haven’t won enough? like…wh-what do you even get out of doing shit like that, rafe? you both could’ve gotten seriously hurt, and for what! winning? again?”
kiara was right behind you the moment she recognized the sound of your yelling piercing her ears, the girl taking no time to back you up. her scent filled your nose as she stood inches away, the smell bringing you some calm as your skin burned hot.
“no,” rafe wore a smug look, lips quirked up in a smirk that only fueled the fire inside you. “no, no. i don’t care about winning; i always win.”
rafe let go of the brunette hanging off him, nose flaring as he took in a deep breath of the fresh ocean air. his eyes were locked on yours, the color reflecting the water crashing against the sand behind you.
kiara backed away, the warmth of her body leaving yours as she took three steps in the other direction. she refused to let him get too close to her, the fear she felt after what he did to her understandable. you didn’t move, though. you stood your ground and let him stand before you. the distance between your bodies was so small you could smell the mint on his breath from his chewing gum and the familiar scent of his cologne flooded your senses.
“i always win, and your pogues always lose.” his voice reverberated deep inside as he smiled down at you, the expression sickeningly sweet.
you swallowed thickly, body tingling from his closeness. god, how you wish he couldn’t make you feel like this anymore.
his breath was hot against your ear as he leaned in further, voice low so that only you could hear.
“you picked the wrong boyfriend, baby…” faux pity coated his words. his lips brushed against the skin of your ear, and you took in a shaky breath, anger quickly dissipated as your body froze in place “could always come back, y’now, when you’re done losing with ‘em.”
rafe pulled back and you looked up at him, eyes glossy and lips slightly agape as you tried to steady your breathing without anyone noticing.
he always did.
“good seeing you, kie.” he never took his eyes off you as he backed away, retreating to the fling waiting for him to return to her grasp. “and i’m serious, y/n.”

Found-Family headcanons for a³'s coven of chaos, part 3: (because they all deserved more time with each other)
(part 2, here.)
(part 1, here.)
There is, of course, a group chat. Billy initially named it, “Coven of Chaos💜” but Rio changed it to “sluts”
Jen immediately left the chat the second it was created, but Alice put her back in. There was a second escape attempt when they were all together, to which Lilia responded with an “🙁” expression, which was enough to convince Jen to reluctantly stay in the group chat.
Ironically, Lilia isn't even active on the group chat. She's terrible at texting & terrible at reasing messages. (“why is the print so small??”)
She is, however, surprisingly nimble with her phone outside of that. She needed to figure it out for business and stuff.
Sharon also doesn't know how to use the group chat. She had a flip-phone until recently—and only got a new one because Billy insisted she needed it. She keeps accidentally doing group calls by miss-clicking on her phone.
Sharon always calls Alice to “come fix her phone” because “it's broken again!!” Alice, each time, has to tell her that it's probably just out of battery.
Agatha is blocked on Jen's phone because she won't stop sending her spam, so they only ever text each other on the group chat, which Jen has muted.
Jen, Alice and Lilia have a separate group chat. Lilia hasn't even noticed, but they assume she has, because she leaves everything on read. In reality, she just thinks both group chats are the same group-chat and they always have to call her om the phone to make plans.
Alice wanted to add Billy to the second group chat too, but Jen told her that he'd probably be sad to not include the others so it's better that he doesn't find out.
Agatha claims she doesn't care what Billy does, but once she ran out of her house to his car because he forgot his jacket.
Billy made everyone friendship bracelets in prideflag colours, (like the ones agatha and rio wore in agatha's trial.)
“I hate bracelets” “don't wear it then” “fuck you, I'm never taking it off.”
“do you like it? :))” *chocked up* “it's fine i guess-”
Alice, Lilia, Sharon and Rio don't even play difficult, they just wear them immediately.
Agatha and Billy love doing matching Halloween outfits. Rio and Eddie would be offended, but like. They respect the slay.
Eddie would go as hulk (haha hulkling reference) and Rio would just wear a black t-shirt that says “BOO-bs” across her chest. And she'd draw nipples all over her body.
Billy makes them vote for best costume and he ALWAYS votes for Alice regardless of who actually has the best costume. Not because he's biased—just because hers are genuinely always his favourites.
Jen and Lilia will go shopping during the first weeks of October, when people start decorating for Halloween, and the moment Lilia spots a SINGLE pumpkin she starts bitching and moaning the WHOLE WAY HOME about how “the holiday industrial complex appropriates our culture through offensive stereotypes and absurd emblems and It's full of caricatures that stem from misogyny and female domesticity and villifying powerful women and AND there's so many racial micro-aggresions and it's all just exploiting us for profit and all these decorations and advertisements are just here to pressure people to buy products and--”
Jen stopped listening ten minutes ago. She SO regrets pointing and saying, “oh, that pumpkin is so cute!” as if she doesn't know who she's hanging out with.
So, obviously Lilia never dresses up for Halloween. Jen just dresses hot, so that Lilia won't be able to be mad at her.
Lilia has... No objections to that--
Rio's favourite thing during Halloween (but also just, always) is scaring the shit out of people.
They all have weekly movie nights :)
Rio picks “comedies” (Horror movies, psychological thrillers, slasher films, gothic fiction, dark comedies, survival horror, anything gruesome & grotesque & body horror & gore, post-apocalyptic fiction) Sharon “coincidentally” skips movie night whenever it's Rio's turn to pick a film.
Alice picked everything everywhere all at once during her last turn. Her and Lilia sobbed through it (for very different reasons) while hugging each other. Other than that, Alice usually picks action movies, crime films, and the occasional rom-com or coming-of-age.
Jen loves dramas. Any dramas. Unnecessary trope-filled miscommunication? Hit her up!
Sharon likes sitcoms and old hollywood productions with a romantic flair. She'll point at scenes and narrate stories about how, “me and my husband used to...”
Agatha watches a lot of reality tv because she loves to make fun of the people yelling at each other.
Billy will always pick musicals. (Lilia has forbidden a specific few—and I think we all know which few.)
Hilariously, Agatha uses her next turn to force Lilia to sit through Madonna's Evita.
Lilia herself hates historical movies and always points out the inaccuracies. Same with fantasy media, she just doesn't like it. She's the pickiest of them all with movies and she always chooses total obscure wildcards that nobody has ever heard before—and somehow they're always the best ones.
Billy's parents are very conflicted about these people. “How about you and Eddie just... Start hanging out with people your own age? Like!! Eddie's friend group!!”
Even when he starts hanging out with the Young Avengers, he still spends more than half of his free time with his coven of lesbian senior citizens. <3

I can imagine a demon reader changing from bad to good after getting catch and dosent want to be with bill and his craziness but still visits him in theroprimson (sorry I might have spelled it wrong)
‘Oh how the might have fallen.’ You cooed as you sat across from bill, a glass screen separating you from him, but you could feel the unbridled anger and betrayal radiating off of Bill from where you sat.
‘You betrayed me and for what? A family of flesh bags?!’ Bill exclaimed. ‘We could’ve ruled together but you let those pine twins get inside your head.’
You scoffed as you folded your arms, the bells on your outfit jingle softly as they did. ‘You called that ruling? I call it madness.’ You remained him as you saw that instead of healing, his broken, fractured body had only gotten worse as it started to stretch across his eye.
He didn’t want to heal, he wanted to remain broken as it meant he didn’t have to relive the memories that he swore to leave behind in the past as he intended, moments that he didn’t want to remember for a reason or other.
‘You were born from madness! You were the madness demon!’ Bill cried as he slammed his hands on the glass but you remained unfazed, knowing this was but Bill’s attempts of getting inside your head in hopes that you’d break him out, however even if he did you’d probably get admitted into Theraprism with him for all eternity in the process.
‘Thanks for reminding me of my origins, what else is new.’ You said sarcastically. You had the uncanny ability to send anyone into a state of madness. it was an ability you used and abused during your time with Bill and his henchmaniacs, way before jheselbruam had decided that she had enough and wanted to reform, but not before she cryptically told you that you’d follow in her footsteps soon enough during a pivotal moment that could change everything. You didn’t know what she meant by that but now as you sat across from the demon you once called your friend, you now understood that Bill was more unhinged then you realised, you were ready to move on with the Pines Family but wanted to see bill once last time before you did.
‘You could’ve been more had you stayed with me and not became soft and let the power of friendship, rainbows and sprinkle kittens tell you that you could be better, when with me you could’ve been far worse!’ Bill said as he felt his hatred for you grow the longer you looked at him with a blank stare, as though you could see through him and his bullshit, like you knew that everything he said was a lie that he told himself as much as he told everyone else; You weren’t scared of him anymore, and Bill didn’t know how to handle that as he was far more use to being in the position of power in your dynamic.
‘In your eye I am already worse.’ You began as you leaned forward, ‘I might as well be a human in demon skin for all you’re aware but here’s the thing I wanted to you dead after everything you’ve put me through, but as Ford once told me there are fates far worse then death and you were more deserving of that fate, it’s almost as though you were destined to end up here regardless and that’s the funniest joke of all.’ You finished with a cackle, the bells of your outfit laughing alongside you.
‘You’re talking to Fordsy?’ Bill asked, now intrigued.
‘Yeah,and I can see why you had that weird one sided situationship with him all that time ago, he’s quite the catch when you get to know him.’ You casually shrug your shoulders as you could see Bill trying to use this to his advantage somehow, something that Ford has told you that he would do and you were more than prepared to shatter his expectations. ‘I’m not going to use him Bill, he’s moved on from you and has found peace with his family, like he should’ve before you came into his life.’ You added in a low, protective growl.
Bill perks up. ‘You’re protecting them from me?’ He asked aghast, hand on his orange prison suit. ‘Have they really corrupted you that much that you’d go out of your way to protect those short life freaks?’
You straightened your posture as you glared at your friend. ‘I only came here to say goodbye, not be interrogated by the demon who’ll come back as something ridiculous like a rainbow shrimp or a fungal cloud, or better yet a butterfly that I can kill for the hell of it.’ You spat as you looked at the time, you were going to be late to Mabel’s arts and crafts session if you kept indulging in this psychopath and his antics. ‘And would you look at that, my time here is done.’
Bill’s eyes widened. ‘Wait! Don’t go! Don’t your dare-‘
‘Goodbye Bill, have fun with therapy.’ You said before snapping your fingers and disappearing, the only thing you heard before you reappeared outside of the Mystery Shack was the sound of Bill’s outrage and hows he’d get back at you and the pines family, but as far as you were aware Bill wasn’t going anywhere for a long, long time.

Courted by the Dragon
Chapter 2 - A Court of Sharks and Dances
Aemond Targaryen is both the cause and witness to the greatest humiliation of your life. You would rather die than see him again. Yet summer at court and the precipice of civil war have other ideas.
Masterlist
~~~
Several weeks after your meeting with Aemond, a raven arrived at Storm's End, inviting your family to spend the summer in Kings Landing at the bequest of Queen Alicent.
The letter marked an unexpected turn of events for the Baratheon family who had never been favoured by the Queen and, though you were quietly suspicious of Aemond’s involvement, you couldn’t be certain.
Either way, your father certainly was pleased by the request. Spending the next month boring you all with the rules on how he expected you to behave at court and how it was high time his three eldest daughters found a suitable husband.
You, on the other hand, were more concerned by how this invitation would lead you straight into the dragon's den and path of the very man you’d been trying to avoid.
Vhagar had been spotted more than a handful of times gliding over the bay these past few weeks, and you had certainly not ventured down to the beach in all that time. No, you had hardly left the castle walls, and mortification had stuck to your skin like a blemish only you could see.
So, when the time arrived for you to leave for Kings Landing, you were not in high spirits. Not that your family noticed. Too busy with their own thoughts on the power and position which could be gained from a friendship with the crown, they barely listened when you feigned illness or tried to make excuses to grant you leave from the journey.
Afterall, refusing such an invite would be akin to madness. No, in your mother's opinion, nothing could make a girl feel better than a summer of opulence and splendour in the Red Keep.
Jousting, dancing, feasts and handsome young knights. The upcoming festivities should have been the stuff of dreams for an unmarried high-born lady such as yourself. But you were descending into what felt like the beginnings of your own personal hell.
Unlike your sister Cassandra, you were not accomplished in music or the arts. Nor were you fun and vibrant like Maris, who was always the epitome of charm and wit.
Defiant and sour was how Septa Orella had often described you and that was on the days when you’d tried your best to behave like a lady instead of muddying your dresses. Though you were older now, you supposed not much had changed since then. If it had, Aemond would not have caught you splashing in the waves like a naughty child.
But it was too late to do anything about that now. Aemond had seen you that day and, if Septa Orella was still alive, you were certain she would have enjoyed knowing you were finally getting your comeuppance. Not that you would have dared to tell her your reasons for wanting to avoid Kings Landing. That was a secret you hoped to take to the grave, yet you had the terrible suspicion it would soon be revealed for all to hear.
It took over a week for your family's carriage to finally make its way through the bronze gates of the Red Keep. You supposed this moment was inevitable, yet it still came as quite a shock, your nerves frayed, your stomach churning. The only comfort was the cover of darkness and the late hour which provided you one last night before you had to face the other courtiers and, of course, Aemond .
You were met by a servant who had been standing by for your arrival, and he escorted you all to a suite of well-appointed chambers which had been readied for your stay. You even had your own room. A large four poster bed commanding its centre, curtained with heavy green brocades which matched the sumptuous quilt and feather pillows. On the nightstand, there was a stack of leather-bound books, and the window was furnished with a velvet chaise on which to read them.
Everything was perfect, and you would be quite comfortable here if it wasn’t for the gnawing dread which squeezed your insides every time you thought of a certain dragon prince. And there was no remedy for that . Only resignation, though you did not want to accept the idea of actually having to see Aemond until he was standing right in front of you.
In the morning, breakfast was brought to your family's chambers on gilded trays along with a roll of parchment which summoned you all for an audience with the Queen.
Again, you tried to make an excuse which would allow you to stay behind, but Borros Baratheon had no interest in the complaints of a daughter. So, when breakfast was cleared away, your stomach only filled with nerves, you had no choice but to follow your family into the Red Keeps imposing hall.
You were announced, one by one. Your father, mother, Cassandra, Maris and then you. All presented to Queen Alicent who seemed as uninterested in your arrival as her son, Prince Aegon, who was standing by her side.
Princess Helaena, however, was very excited by the appearance of three young ladies and was quick to greet you all. Without having to ask, she explained that Aemond was not in Kings Landing at present.
He was hunting with Vhagar in Dorne and, though the thought of him racing through the sky on dragon back made you shiver, you were suddenly free, and a whole world of opportunity seemed to open up before you.
Perhaps you would not see Aemond at all, what an enticing thought that was, even if you knew it wasn’t true. Still, you would not see him for a while and that felt like long enough.
When you were allowed to leave the great hall, you joined Helaena and your sisters for a stroll in the rose garden and you were surprised by its beauty.
Roses clambered and sprawled for as far and wide as the eye could see. Every shade of pink imaginable punctuated by froths of lavender and bright purple spears of salvia. It smelled divine and hummed with the buzz of a thousand bumble bees.
Accompanying you through the turns of the garden were a gaggle of wealthy suitors, who were like sharks in the water at the smell of fresh young blood. Yet even they did not deter from the roses.
You’d brought a book from your room to allow you an excuse to avoid eye contact with Aemond. Now you had every intention of reading it under the shade of a good tree, but Tyland Lannister had other ideas.
“May I join you, Lady Baratheon?” he asked gallantly, sweeping his long golden cape over his shoulder as he knelt on the grass before you.
Though much older than yourself and of no interest to you personally, he was master of ships and favoured by the royal family, so you had no choice but to smile and say, “of course, My Lord.”
He sat a little too close, his expectant eyes waiting for you to entertain him with small talk and flattery as young ladies are trained to do. But you were not as well-bred as your sisters, nor did you have any interest in the men at court.
You held his stare, your fingers quietly itching to open your book, but he was not deterred.
“I trust your journey here was pleasant?” he said.
“As pleasant as can be expected, my Lord.”
“And you find your quarters here to be suitable?”
“Indeed.”
“That is good. Will your family be attending the dance this evening?”
“I believe so.”
He smiled, satisfied and not at all deterred by your clipped, formal answers. In fact, the conversation continued like that for quite some time. Even when you made haste to escape from the shade of the tree in favour of the sun. Lord Lannister took it upon himself to escort you around the grounds with a keen interest in everything you had to say, and he was not the only one.
After a while, you were joined by Lord Karstark and Ser Harrold, all three of them vying for your attention in a manner you were wholly unaccustomed to. Your fathers banner men would never be so bold in their pursuit of his daughters, and you had never been outside the boundary of the Stormlands before now.
You were relieved when your mother finally called you to tea and disheartened some hours later when it was time for the feast and the first of the summer dances.
Still, you had no choice in the matter, though you would rather stay in your room and make good use of the chaise and your stack of books. It wasn’t just Aemond you wanted to avoid; it was court. It didn’t seem to call to you like it did to Maris and you envied her excitement and her gown.
Hers was new, the prettiest shade of sage green velvet while yours was honey yellow silk. You loathed yellow. But that was the price of being a third daughter. It had been a beautiful dress on Cassandra, now it was too old and unstylish for the eldest of the Baratheon girls.
You had complained of such maltreatments when you were younger. But your mother had always said ‘your face was your bauble’, and it had meant as little to you now as it did then.
The saving grace was your shoes, and they were beautiful indeed. Black velvet pumps which Cassandra had painstakingly embroidered with dainty flowers and vines while hers were plain.
So, deciding to at least try to enjoy the evening, you entered the hall, which was bursting with life and vibrance and, when it came time to dance, you were certainly not without partners.
In fact, you were spoiled for choice though Tyland Lannister seemed determined to commandeer your hand at every opportunity. If you were to be honest with yourself, you enjoyed the attention, and the twists and turns of each dance with greater pleasure than you’d hoped to achieve. The music was merry, and the elderflower wine drank like sugar syrup before swirling happily in your veins.
And that’s how it was for almost two weeks at court. Fun and Frivolity.
After the first few days, you’d almost forgotten the reason you didn't want to come here in the first place. You enjoyed all the lazy afternoons in the garden and looked forward to the evening entertainment with as much excitement as your sisters.
Ser Harrold, a knight of the realm and the second son to his father’s modest estate, had quickly become your favourite dance partner. Though your hand was still very much pursued by the master of ships. So much so, that your father had begun to imagine Tyland Lannister might even propose. An idea which gave you a new dread in the pit of your stomach.
So that night, some thirteen days after your arrival in King’s Landing, it was Tyland's attention which you were trying to avoid. So preoccupied with evading his advances, you couldn’t be certain just how long Aemond Targaryen had been witness to the whole scene. Only that when you noticed him, lurking in the shadows at the edges of the room, you could hardly look away.
The wine had begun to make you feel as light as a feather, but Aemond’s presence seemed to ground you to the floor like a boulder. The dance no longer feeling as merry and Ser Harrold’s arms becoming little more than a prison for Aemond’s scrutiny.
When had he returned?
Why did he look at you like that?
When the dance with Ser Harrold was finally over, you said ‘goodnight’ and retreated to your room without sharing a single word with another soul and certainly not the dragon prince.
Then in an act of self-indulgent madness, you tried to fool yourself into thinking he might have forgotten all about that day at the beach. Or at least forgotten the finer details, yet you could remember them all.
The way he had looked at you, the curve of his smile and the soft commanding sound of his voice.
You had never hated someone until then and you hated Aemond Targaryen more than anything.
Why couldn’t he have stayed away?
The next day, the routine was practically the same as every other. Breakfast in your chambers followed by an afternoon in the gardens. Only this time, the men who had been begging for your dances, could barely look you in the eye. Even Lord Lannister had no interest in the usual small talk and left the gardens almost as soon as you arrived.
You couldn’t stop the knot which formed in the pit of your stomach. Or the gnawing realisation, that while all the other young ladies were flirting and laughing with suitors, you were cast aside. A solitary figure in a crowd of couples with only your book to keep you company until it was time for tea, and you were certainly ready for it.
You’d never spent such lonely hours in the company of so many people before, and you were certain it was no coincidence.
Had Aemond told the men at court of your indiscretion?
Would he shame your family for your actions that day on the beach?
What was worse, you had nobody you could ask without risking exposure. No, better to hold your head high and remain as calm and unshaken as possible in the face of utter social annihilation.
Thank you for reading! So many people found this story so quickly which is exciting. I wrote most of this story at the start of last year and I wasn't sure if I was going to publish it but I'm glad I have. Hopefully I'll be able to post another chapter or even two before I return to work and real life in a few days. But what do we think so far? Has Aemond revealed all? Or something else?
Chapter 9 - Wretched and Joyful
1953
Pride Ring
These parties were even worse than Alastor remembered.
Most of the Hellborn royalty worth a damn were here tonight and therefore most of Pride Ring’s most prominent Overlords were in attendance. It would be poor form if he hadn’t made an appearance, but he found the whole thing really . . . stupid.
He was a man of principle and believed in keeping one’s manners in check when appropriate but the over-the-top air of sophistication, of white collar, blue blood privilege among these Hellborn’s made Alastor’s skin crawl. It reminded him far too much of the type of people he had to associate with while working in radio as a human. He had to dress nicer, change his accent and speak with more refinement, force his hair straighter . . . hell he even spent as little time outside during the daytime to keep his slightly tanner than Caucasian skin tone as light as possible.
These days, he only made a point of showing up to these parties to see how uncomfortable he could make the Goetia Ars family before dipping out in less than an hour’s time. Some of their lower status members had been a few of his first targets when he had come into power there in Hell and he always made a point of re-airing their family members’ screams to his broadcasts for days in advance before arriving to their palaces.
There was only one reason he was still hanging around that evening and it was the woman who he had just watched make her exit out onto an empty balcony.
He hadn’t seen Mina in over a year. Not since his mishap with attempting to get her soul. He had known very quickly in their budding friendship that he genuinely enjoyed her company, but it wasn’t until he had tried to force her hand, and she had nearly died, that he realized the depth of his feelings for her. And it had made him extremely uncomfortable, to say the least. He had meant it when he had told her that he never wanted to see her again.
Or . . . at least he thought he had.
But then he had seen her that evening from across the ballroom, eagerly speaking with an owlish royal easily twice her height.
Like him, she hadn’t arrived in anything fancier than she normally wore, although her usual dress was classy enough to not stand out. The long, loose fitting black sleeves of her top were modest but the sweetheart collar and bow around the front of her waist accentuated her curves pleasantly. The dress ended with a long flowing skirt of burnt orange, the rich color of a southern sunset he hadn’t seen in decades.
Alastor had always enjoyed the company of women. Although he admired their beauty in a purely aesthetic way, he found he related to them better and preferred their company over that of men’s. Therefore, almost all of his closest acquaintances were women. But it wasn’t until that night, when he was forced to come to terms with how much he had missed having her in his life, that he felt a stirring of something he hadn’t experienced since his teenage years, when even his hormones had been challenging to control. Still hesitant to approach, he’d watched her from a distance; debating with himself on whether or not to act on the stirring of emotions he could feel brewing inside him.
And then. . . Mina looked upset. She walked through the large glass doors, clearly agitated, and went towards the edge of the outdoor balcony, out of his line of sight.
Perhaps it was because he had separated himself from her completely over the last 15 months, allowing both of their tempers to cool off enough to think. Or maybe it was just the utter distraught look on her face that drew him to her. Or maybe, something in his dark and twisted mind had finally softened; matured enough to allow him something more in this afterlife.
Whatever the reason, Alastor could no longer find a reason why he shouldn’t allow himself to be around her. Taking his still full glass of scotch with him, he stepped out onto the balcony, and shut the door behind him.
Mina was at the corner of the balcony, elbows on the railing, and holding a cigarette. She looked over her shoulder at him, then turned away again, and with a slight tremble in her hand, brought the cigarette to her lips and took a long drag.
“You were right, you know,” she said once she exhaled. “These parties are terrible.”
He chuckled as he approached her, leaning one elbow on the railing himself but turned more directly towards her. “It’s almost criminal that I tried to get you to make a deal for the chance to go to one. Really, I’m ashamed.”
Her face broke into a smile then. “I did sneak off and find this amazing library upstairs. There were texts so old they were in scrolls. Even a few clay tablets. None of it in English, of course.” Her smile fell and she took another drag. “No one here even thinks it’s of any interest. These Goetia’s, they’re so ancient and powerful, they know so much about . . . everything. And they spend their time doing this? Standing around in outfits and jewelry that costs thousands of dollars just to talk shit about their children and make jokes about who their husband is fucking. I don’t know why I thought they’d be different. Turns out Hell really isn’t much different than Earth.”
“And yet they’re one of the few who are summoned by living humans,” Alastor agreed. “Oh, the irony. What I wouldn’t give to make deals up on Earth.”
“Didn’t you kill a few of them?” Mina asked.
“Ages ago, but yes. Still one of my finer moments,” he said, taking a sip of his drink.
She was staring at him openly now, a small smile playing across her lips, as she eyed him up and down.
“You look . . . really good,” she said after a beat.
He brought his glass down, and though he could tell she was flirting, he pretended to be confused. Glancing down at his red pinstriped jacket, he said, “I look how I always look.”
“Sorry,” she said, flicking her cigarette out over the edge without bothering to stamp it out. “I’m not myself tonight. Forgive me if I seem a little . . . irritable and forward. Could you conjure me one of those?” she asked, eyeing his glass.
“Jameson?” he asked, assuming.
“Please,” she scoffed, “Bourbon.”
“Developed a different taste while you were in the south?” he teased and produced the glass with a flourish.
She took a rather large gulp before answering. “It’s sweeter.”
Mina pulled her hair over one shoulder, fanning air over the exposed skin with her free hand and sighed. “I know it’s Hell, but does it always have to be so God damn hot?”
Alastor noted that it was actually a cooler evening as far as Hell was concerned and quite comfortable until suddenly, he understood. Mina was shaky, on edge, flushed, and eyeing him like he was a cool drink of water, even more so than she had before he had betrayed her trust. And she was drinking liquor, which he had never seen her do before. He didn’t know much when it came to the biology of demon women, but he knew then that Mina was in heat. Probably just the later stages of it, but still.
She was drunk and hormonal, and he had been flirting with her.
“Alastor?” she asked, after he hadn’t responded to a single thing she had said.
Normally the idea of someone being attracted to him either amused him or it was like a bucket of ice water down his back, completely repulsing him. But he was realizing now that Mina’s attraction to him, which was remarkably still there despite everything he had done to her and was surely a sign of her susceptible state of mind, pleased him. He felt warm and happy and suddenly perversely excited about her aroused state.
She was watching him, and he had to think, think of something he would normally do or say, and not how much he wanted to touch her. That could come later, if he still wanted it, but he could not lose control of this situation and take advantage of her.
“I don’t find you to be irritable at all. You are being remarkably pleasant, given the circumstances in which we last parted,” he finally managed to say with a confident smile, thankfully always there to hide his inner turmoil.
“It’s funny how much a year makes a difference,” she said, inching a little closer to him and taking another sip of her bourbon. He should not have given that to her. “I figure, if you wanted to hurt me, you would have done it that night. Instead, you let me be. You let me live. And after a while, I really had to start asking myself, why? Why didn’t you just kill me?”
“I didn’t have a reason to,” he answered, sounding much more composed than he felt.
“Bullshit. I’ve seen you kill people for less.”
He had no smart response for that. She was right. Anyone else would have at least faced a painful death before respawning but likely would have ended up on his radio broadcast as a permanent entertainment piece.
“It wasn’t all for show, was it? The time we spent together?” she asked when he failed to answer.
“No,” he admitted, and looked down to see a lock of her hair now wrapped around his fingers. When had he done that? “No, I’m afraid . . . none of it was.”
She shifted her weight, processing what he had just confessed.
“Then why-“ she began, and now she was running her hands over the lapels of his jacket, “-why did you do it? Why couldn’t you just let things continue the way they were going?”
“I suppose,” he swallowed, and he was sure not even his smile could hide his exponentially growing desire for her any longer, “I had forgotten how to do that.”
She smiled back at him, seemingly satisfied and believing that answer.
“Let me show you how,” she whispered.
She raised herself up on tip toes and kissed him. It was soft, gentle, and surprisingly controlled. Despite the rush of hormones Alastor could practically smell coming off her, she wasn’t losing herself in the heat of the moment. If she had been all tongue and grabbing hands it might have snapped him out of it but instead, she was sweet and almost shy with him. And now he was good and turned on and he was the one deepening the kiss, getting handfuls of her hair at the back of her head, and pulling her towards him.
His tongue danced across hers and God bourbon had never tasted so good. He had barely had a double of his own drink and yet felt more drunk than he had in years with the feel of her pressed so well against him. She was so right for him, understood him so easily, wanted him as much as he wanted her-
A glass shattered and Mina broke away from the kiss. Without stepping out of his arms, she looked down at the glass of whiskey she had dropped in order to grab hold of his jacket with both hands.
“Oops,” she said and then broke into a fit of giggles.
Right. She hid it well but was clearly more drunk than he had initially wagered.
“You should get yourself home,” he said reluctantly. “Who did you come here with this evening?”
“Rosie,” Mina answered. “But she already left.”
“Did she now?” Alastor said, and then laughed. “Mina, my dear, I believe we’ve been set up. She’s the one who talked me into coming here tonight but you’re right, she’s nowhere to be found.”
“It’s not a problem, really Alastor. I’m a big girl, I can see myself home,” Mina said. “There’s just one more thing I need to do.”
As if on cue, a Goetia woman opened the doors and stepped out on the balcony.
“Do you mind?” Alastor asked, irritated at the intrusion. Even if there was a chance that this was this owl woman’s house, he and Mina were clearly in the middle of a private conversation.
“Don’t tell me what to do, Sinner,” she said.
“It’s alright, Alastor, I asked a favor of her," Mina said, placing a reassuring hand on his arm. “Actually, would you be a dear and step inside? Close the doors behind you.” She leaned in and whispered, “And just to be safe, keep a bit of a distance, would you?”
Alastor caught a sinister look in Mina’s eye and catching on, nodded to her.
“My apologies, my lady,” Alastor said as he turned to face the hostess and made his exit.
“Alright, what is it you wanted to see now?” the heiress said to Mina without acknowledging Alastor further. She sounded impatient and bored.
He did as he was told and quietly brought the two doors closed together and stepped away from the glass. Though he couldn’t hear a thing, he could see Mina turn and face into the night, the broken glass at her feet forgotten.
After a moment, he watched in fascination as the Goetia’s body stood a bit straighter and stared at Mina as if in a trance. After what must have been only another 10 seconds, Mina finally turned to face the Goetia who then turned away and went back through the doors, with Mina following close behind.
The heiress walked wordlessly out into the middle of the large hall full of other demons while Mina stopped at Alastor’s side, watching the Hellborn with a coy smile on her face.
Wordlessly, the heiress began to rip off her ballgown.
She tore it off in chunks; first bits of the sleeves and then large strips of the skirt, exposing layer upon layer of silk and tool, before finally revealing skinny, scaled legs that were far from appealing to Alastor’s gaze.
“Darling, what are you doing?” another Goetia said with alarm and ran towards her from the other side of the room. “Gwenore! STOP!”
“I’ve been fucking your nephew!” the woman screamed in what must have been her husband’s face.
“Oh shit,” Mina said with a laugh. “That’s even better than I expected.”
“My neph-“ the man said with a pause, “BUT HE’S FIFTEEN!”
“You did this to her? A Goetia?” Alastor asked, tilting his head.
“IT WAS MY COUSIN BEFORE THAT!” the woman shrieked and as her husband let go of her, she began ripping out the beautiful long feathers that fell down her shoulders from her head.
“I only managed it because she was so unsuspecting but . . . yes. I just put the suggestion in her head that she make a fool of herself,” Mina answered. Neither of them had taken their eyes off the show.
“And sometimes . . . sometimes . . .” the woman was hyperventilating and cackling with hysteria now, eyes gone bloodshot as she continued to rip off bits of clothing and feather. “Sometimes I wonder how good our son will be when he’s more grown!”
A resounding gasp came from all the onlookers at that. ‘Gwenore’ hadn’t screamed that confession as loud as the others, but it was still plenty audible to the dozens of people around her.
“I may have also made her confess her deepest secrets,” Mina said and giggled the same light laugh she had made when she dropped her whiskey glass. “I guess she’s even worse than I judged her for.”
Alastor looked down at Mina, and saw all at once, the potential of having her by his side. Not under his control, not limited by his own ideas and fancy. Completely free and standing next to him as his equal, simply because of her own desire for him. She was more than cruel; she was creative about it. Took pleasure in it, just as he did. And even outside of her remarkable power, Mina was lovely to be around.
“You are stunning,” Alastor said, still watching her.
She looked up at him and her malicious grin turned back to that sweet, innocent smile she had used on him earlier.
“Take me home?” she asked, and what was he to do, but oblige her?
____
Mina had been polite and well-mannered during the cab ride home, looking very composed and in control of herself. It was impressive to Alastor, who had heard tales of women losing their minds to their various animalistic hormone cycles. His own rut got the best of him occasionally, making him more aggressive and likely to lash out than normal. Thankfully the sexual urges were rather dormant in him, even for those two weeks out of every year, and were nothing he couldn’t take care of himself in the privacy of his own place.
But Mina had all the signs that she was aroused now that he was looking for them. Her vertical pupils were completely round, she had a red blush to her face and even across her collar bone, and she fidgeted often with her legs, crossing, and uncrossing them several times. To an untrained eye, she was nothing less than a lady while seated next to him in the small cab that was barely tall enough to accompany the height of his ears, but Alastor could tell she was doing a fine job of restraining herself.
Once the excruciating ride back to The Pit was over, Mina casually took his hand and guided him towards her apartment. This area of the neighborhood must have been far from where most of the torture took place as it was fairly quiet, only the occasional scream came from the lake of fire he could see from between the apartment buildings. It didn’t have the same quaint charm as Cannibal Town, but Alastor had to admit, the gothic splendor of the place was admirable.
“Well, I guess that settles it,” Mina said as she walked him up to a front door he gathered to be her own. “You must really have no ill feelings towards me.”
“Did I just pass some test I wasn’t aware I was taking?”
“Oh, definitely,” Mina answered, that wicked smile back in place. “No one can cross the threshold into Abadon’s territory if they mean harm to anyone who lives here. You would have burst into flames the second your feet hit the pavement here.”
He felt his ears shoot straight up in surprise.
“You were willing to set me ablaze to make sure I wasn’t still after your soul?” he asked, shocked and impressed.
Mina shrugged and turned her back on him, producing a key and unlocking her front door.
“You were willing to burn me to get my soul. Fair is fair.”
She held the door open for him and gave a welcoming gesture for him to follow her in.
“I really shouldn’t,” he said.
She frowned at him. “Why not?”
“Because if I go in there, I’m afraid I might actually stay. And tonight . . . tonight is not the right night for that.”
Now she was positively pouting at him. “I’m not langered, Alastor. You don’t have to treat me like a child.”
“That is not-“ he began, and then sighed and tried again. “I’m sorry if I don’t know a more polite and proper way to address this issue, but I’m concerned that your . . . ‘timing’ . . . if I may, paired with your alcohol consumption, may allow you to consent to things you wouldn’t normally consent to.”
Her jaw dropped and for a moment, Alastor worried he had deeply offended her.
“You burned down a bar and caused damage to an entire city block.”
“That’s not exactly unusual for me-“
“You locked my best friends up for hours!”
“Again, Mina-“
“You trapped me in an alley and tried to burn me alive!”
“I’m not sure I understand where you’re going with this.”
“And now you’re being a gentleman?!”
He opened his mouth to try and speak again, but once again, Mina left him speechless.
She started laughing.
After a beat, Alastor’s own smile turned to that of strained confusion to genuine affection. She had a point. It sounded a bit silly when put that way, but it didn’t mean he was going to change his mind.
“You’re insane,” she said, “and I think I really like you.”
He stepped closer into her space, tilted her chin up slowly with his index finger, and placed a single, lingering kiss to her lips.
She sighed as they parted. “Are you sure?” she asked in a small voice.
“Yes,” he answered, “I’m very sure. Because I’d very much like to have more than one evening with you, and I think if I take this one, I will have ruined that chance.”
“Wow,” she said breathlessly, “that is the loveliest thing a man has ever said to me.”
“Dinner then? Two nights from now?”
“I can’t wait,” she smiled. “Where?”
“My radio tower. I’ll cook.”
Alastor had told her a year ago, before he had sent her running, that he had never had a guest there before. He was counting on her remembering that and based on the shocked but pleased look on her face, she did.
_____
Two days later, Mina was feeling much more in control of herself. She still wasn’t sure if she really would have thought less of Alastor if he had stayed the night with her that evening; especially because in her fantasies, it had been a wonderful time. But the fact that he had been so considerate of her, she knew in the long run, only made the sudden return of her feelings for him much stronger.
Alastor made her feel like an addict falling off the wagon. It wasn’t a gradual decent; she was right back to that evening in the park before he had offered her his first deal. Mina was falling for him, hard and fast, all over again, after having spent hardly an hour in his presence. And the only part of her that even cared a little was her pride. Mina had enjoyed her years as a strong, independent bachelorette. Although it was often lonely, and sexually frustrating, it gave her a sense of freedom that she had killed for when alive. But her heart and her body wanted Alastor so damn much, that together they drowned out that pesky voice of independence as she stood under his radio tower, looking up.
She knew where it was; everyone in Pentagram City did. The giant, black and red tower soared over the heart of the city and was impossible to miss. But it was raised up on a deadly looking lattice of support beams, with no ground floor entrance, or even a ladder to climb.
How was she supposed to get up there? How did he get up there?
Something in the corner of her eye moved, down near her feet, and she glanced at it too late. The shadowy hand had broken free from its camouflaged surroundings and already had her by the ankle and even her cat-like reflexes weren’t fast enough to react by the time she was dissolving into darkness herself.
She felt the sensation of being pulled up and seconds later, was looking out over a red-tinted cityscape.
“I suppose I should have warned you,” Alastor’s voice said from behind her, “but it really is the easiest way up here. Believe me, you wouldn’t want to try and make that climb. Everyone who has, has ended up in the airwaves.”
He was setting food down on a small rectangular table set for two, pressed up against a large window, as if to give the diners a perfect view.
Mina turned a slow 360, taking in the whole room.
It was nothing like what she imagined a typical radio tower to look like. She had envisioned a cramped, windowless room, with walls consisting of nothing but dials and controls she couldn’t even begin to understand the workings of. She had seen videos of phone operator rooms, women wheeling back and forth, placing wires into one port after another, and that was the closest thing her early 20th century mind could come up with.
This place was exactly the opposite of all that. It was a large round room, surrounded by several floor to ceiling windows that gave the occupants a nearly uninterrupted view of the city below. There was only one small control panel with a few dials, and one old-fashioned radio from the 1930’s sitting on a stand next to it. Alastor must have done the majority of his work using his magic rather than actual technology, which appeared to be only supplemental to his tasks.
And the décor was cozy, giving the room a lived-in feeling, rather than what one would expect in a professional setting.
There were antlers and wildlife paintings mounted on the few narrow walls of the room, and a long and deep-seated couch placed against the opposite window from the dining table. A few cabinets and shelves placed strategically throughout the room, holding everything from books, to liquor bottles, to shrunken heads.
“Not what you expected?” Alastor asked after she turned back around to face him.
“It’s lovely,” she answered truthfully. “You live here?”
“Well, it’s not the only room, but it is my favorite.”
She quickly scanned the room again. There were no doors indicating the existence of other rooms. Or an exit. Mina should have felt trapped then, but instead she felt safely secluded, much like she did in her own home.
“Ah, yes, well,” Alastor said, realizing what she was noticing. “Since no one else has ever been here, I didn’t have to think of a design that would accommodate anything other than my preferred method of moving about.”
So, he just moved from room to room, via shadow? For a man who could conjure just about anything he wanted with a snap of his fingers, Mina supposed that made sense.
“No one else has really ever been here?” she asked.
“No one,” he answered, and pulled a chair away from the table, indicating for her to sit down. She did and he joined her, sitting opposite from her.
“And why me? Why now?” she had an idea, but she wouldn’t be a woman if she didn’t like to hear it said out loud.
“My biggest problem with you, Mina,” Alastor began, “is that for some inexplicable reason since we’ve met, I’ve been desperate for you to know everything about me. And vice versa.”
Mina felt her face grow warm. He had been honest then, when he admitted to her that their time spent together wasn’t all just to get her soul. Their hours and hours of conversations, often deeply personal, had been as real and intimate as she imagined.
“Speaking of,” Alastor continued, “please, try the food.”
She did, taking a tentative bite of rice and sausage. It looked to her like some kind of curry and must have taken at least a couple hours to make. Just the first bite had such an explosion of flavor and mixed spices, far more than her European palate was used to. This is what he should have tried to bargain for her soul over.
“That’s positively deadly,” she said with a smile.
“Not too spicey?” he asked. He was smiling as well, as always, but something in his eyes and the extra crackle in the static of his voice made Mina think he was a little nervous.
“No. I mean, it’s more than I’m used to, but it’s incredible. Really.”
He visibly relaxed a little then and Mina’s heart gave a little flutter. Alastor really had been nervous, and it was entirely too sweet to think he cared that much about her opinion.
“It’s called jambalaya. It was my mother’s recipe,” he admitted.
Oh . . .
Mina felt the significance of the evening shift into something more serious. This was the closest he could come to introducing her to his mother and men didn’t do that unless they were pursuing something serious. Her heart began to beat just a little harder at the realization, but less out of nerves, and more out of excitement. That notion sat just fine with her.
“Here,” he said, setting a glass of red wine before her. There was no bottle in sight, but again, this was Alastor. She wondered if she would ever get used to his ability to just create things out of thin air like that. “It’ll help if the spice starts to build up too much for you.”
Mina recognized the flavor as a Chianti, which was normally a dryer wine than she preferred, but she had to admit, it paired wonderfully with the spice of the jambalaya. She would never have though to mix Italian with Creole, but clearly, Alastor knew what he was doing.
It was hard to say how long their dinner lasted. Their conversation continued far longer than the meal and it seemed there wasn’t a topic they didn’t cover.
He spoke in much more detail about his mother than he ever had before, and Mina felt an empty kind of ache that she hadn’t acknowledged in years. She never had such an unconditional bond with anyone. Even her baby sister, who she had loved more than anyone, had distanced herself from Mina by the end of her life. Rather than feel envious of Alastor though, she felt relief. This man, as deadly and cold as he could be, had a soft side. Was capable of love and empathy for another person. If Mina were ever to let herself be with another person again, he would have to toe the same line between psychopath and caring partner that she did.
The conversation turned more to their work, both while alive and in Hell, and how it had defined them so much as the people they were now. They shared the same love of music, were driven by the same desire to not be controlled by the kind of people they loathed the most, and to be powerful enough to feel free.
It was so easy to talk with him about these things, to be here in the comfort of his home for hours, when normally she would begin to feel her social battery draining and get the urge to leave for the peace and quiet of her own solitude. She wanted the opposite of that. She wanted to stay here with him and never, ever leave.
Eventually, the conversation did come to a lull, and Alastor asked if she would like to dance with him.
Mina felt that feeling return, that this was really the start of something big between them, something that could be permanent, and eagerly took his hand.
The radio hummed to life as together, they strode to the middle of the room, and Mina stepped into his arms as the music began to play.
Life is a song, let’s sing it together
Let’s take our hearts and dip them in rhyme
Let’s learn the words, let’s learn the music together
hoping the song lasts for a long, long time
Life is a song that goes on forever
Love’s old refrain can never go wrong
Let’s strike the note Mendelssohn wrote concerning
spring weather
Let’s sing together and make life a song
Mina was familiar with the song, although love songs had never really been her cup of tea, and it had been popular on Earth a few years after her death. She couldn’t help but pay more attention to the lyrics now though, as Alastor moved them in gentle circles around the room. If she had read a scene like this in a book, she would have scoffed and called it cheesy and unrealistic. But there in real life, feeling for the first time how easy it was to fall in love with someone when they were actually right for you, Mina began to understand what those romance novels were trying to tell her all along.
As the last of the lyrics were sung, before the music had completely faded out, they were kissing. Mina should have been out of practice, but just as their kiss on the balcony had been, it was perfect. There was no hesitation in it, but it was slow and tender . . . at first. She could taste the spices and wine on his tongue, smell the lingering scent of Spanish moss and cypress on his skin, and feel the strength of his power emanating from his body beneath her hands.
This time it was her who increased the intensity of the kiss, moving her hands from his jaw line up into his hair, playfully scratching at the short clipped black hair before tangling her fingers in the longer red strands. She felt Alastor’s arms tighten around her in response, his own hands wandering lower until they were gripping her hips.
He broke away from her lips only to then leave a trail of kisses across her jaw and she moaned when his mouth reached her neck, using the sharp points of his teeth to take a feathery light bite out of her pulse point before kissing away the playful marks. She tilted her head back while still holding the back of his, encouraging him to continue.
Alastor was a full head taller than her, and while standing it was difficult and awkward for him to go any lower. His breath was hot and heavy against her exposed neck, a signal to Mina that he was just as needful for her as she was for him.
“The couch?” she managed to pant out, wanting desperately to be somewhere where he could be properly on top of her.
He shook his head. “Allow me,” he said, and with another kiss, Mina felt that now familiar feeling of shadow wrapping its essence around her, and the room dissolved into darkness.
When they reappeared, they were in a much smaller, windowless room but it wasn’t cramped or claustrophobic. Rather, it felt like the bedroom in a quaint, cozy cabin. The walls were wood paneled, in a well-done, rustic kind of way. The only pieces of furniture were an extra-long bed tucked into a corner, made neatly up with a dark green quilt, and a small mahogany dresser on the opposite wall. There didn’t seem to be a closet of any kind, but there was one door that was left just slightly ajar that appeared to lead to a bathroom that must have been near the size of the bedroom itself by what she could see of the distant wall.
Mina noticed all of this in a distracted, half paying attention sort of way, considering her focus was almost entirely preoccupied by the red deer demon looming over her. Their mouths were on each other after half a second of her processing their new location; their hands exploring each other in a much more forward way than before.
Her hands slipped under Alastor’s jacket, grazing over his shirt in an attempt to feel as much of him as possible. Quickly losing patience with the restrictiveness of the item, she pulled her hands back out from underneath the jacket and began unbuttoning it until she could shove it off his shoulders and discard it behind him. He dutifully helped pull his arms and hands out of the sleeves and once free, they were back on her own body, untying the sash made up into a bow at her navel to loosen the fit of her blouse so that he could pull the hem out from the top of her skirt.
Alastor’s hands found skin as they explored under her shirt, ghosting up her sides and tickling her ribs. She froze at the contact, pleasurable as it was, as it occurred to her for the first time that she’d have to take her blouse off.
“What’s wrong?” he asked her, noticing her sharp intake of breath.
“Nothing, I just . . .” she tried to explain but hesitated.
“We can stop,” he said simply, not a trace of disappointment in his tone.
“I don’t want to stop,” she responded quickly; desperately. His small grin twitched at the corners at her reply.
“Then tell me what I just did wrong,” he said, his voice teasing but understanding.
“Nothing, you . . . you’re perfect,” she sighed, knowing what she had to do. “I need to show you something.”
Mina reached behind her and undid her zipper herself and pulled her blouse up over her head, standing before him in her bra. She knew he would be able to see the beginning of her spots across the tops of her shoulders, even if he couldn’t see them trailing down her back from his position.
His smile widened further, though he looked a little confused.
“I was hoping to see more than that tonight,” he quipped.
Mina frowned. “You don’t mind them?”
“Are we talking about the same things?” he asked with a playful tilt of his head.
She rolled her eyes at his inuendo and gestured with her chin to her shoulders.
“Oh,” he said, eyebrows raised in understanding. “No, of course not. Why would I?”
“Well they’re . . . they’re hideous,” she said in a small voice.
“Mina,” he chided, “I don’t think you know what hideous is.” He leaned over her and placed several small kisses along her shoulders, his hands coming behind her to trail his claws down the pattern of spots before cupping her ass and pulling her tightly against him. “You look absolutely delicious.”
The heat between her legs rekindled at his words and she aggressively began kissing him again, growling a bit when he responded in kind, biting at her lower lip. She got back to work undressing him, finding his belt buckle and making quick work of it, before untucking his shirt from his pants and working first at his bow tie and then at his shirt buttons.
In seconds she had everything undone and began yanking his shirt off him the same way she had made quick work of his jacket.
She broke the kiss to get a glimpse of the present she had just unwrapped and then took pause, sucking in a sharp breath at the sight before her.
“I told you, you don’t know what hideous is,” Alastor said, in a quiet, calm voice, but his smile was the smallest she had ever seen it.
Mina touched some of the scars etched into the skin of his chest. There were dozens of them, all jagged and irregular, many of them clearly made by teeth. Scars were so rare in Hell, as Sinners always healed eventually from their injuries, unless they were made by very specific weapons or magic.
She didn’t find them to be hideous at all but they made her incredibly sad, even before she knew the cause.
“What happened to you?” she finally asked.
“Nothing. Not since my death, at least,” he answered. “I was quite far gone by the time the dogs started in on me, I didn’t feel any of it. Who knows how or why we take the forms we do as souls.”
Mina thought back to her own last moments of life there on the beach, the jaguar’s weight on her, and the teeth that ripped open her neck. She must have seemed very foolish to Alastor for being insecure about her spots. It really dawned on her then, that though he was a powerful Overlord now, he was once a human like she had been. Fragile, mortal, and very capable of succumbing to violence.
She ran her hands down his chest and then wrapped her arms around him, pulling him as close as possible, and buried her face in his chest, kissing several of his scars as she did so. The hurt in her heart for the life he had led, and the way he had died, settled in her chest like a knife.
“Mina,” he whispered, soothing her, and guided her chin upwards, as he leaned down to capture her lips with his own.
The rest of their clothes were divulged more slowly after that, each item being removed as if exposing the most precious gift imaginable. They explored each other’s bodies with near worshipful touches, delighting in the similarities and differences. They caressed each other’s ears, admired the way their limbs almost matched in skin tone, as they each darkened at the elbows and knees, down to fingertips and toes. Mina stroked his antlers with her hands, as her mouth found a sensitive spot on his neck, and her toes playfully ran across his hooves that began at the balls of his feet.
They were lying in bed together then, on top of the still made-up quilt and both completely naked, his erection teasing her as she felt it against her stomach, making her ache for more. He was busy still tasting every inch of her skin that he could get a hold of when she noticed a surprise flicker of red in the corner of her eye and peered down his backside, getting the first good look of what would soon become her favorite piece of his anatomy; the little secret only she was ever able to know about him.
“You have a tail!” she gasped out in surprise.
He made something between a groan and a sigh, his mouth occupied with sucking and biting at her right breast.
“Alastor!” she squealed and pushed at his shoulders until he relented.
“Unfortunately so,” he huffed, not enjoying the interruption as much as she was.
“Let me see it,” she said, trying sit to up.
“Later,” he said, keeping her down.
“Please,” she pouted, “you see mine all the time.”
“Yours is not an insult to your character,” he replied, not budging.
She reached her own long tail around, using it to stroke the back of one of his calf muscles.
“Pleeeaase,” she said, sultrier this time.
He reached and snatched at her tail, sliding his hand down it until he had it by tip, and brought it to his lips for a quick kiss before letting it go, and settling his weight on top of her with finality.
“I said ‘later’.”
“Tease,” she said before he quieted her mouth with his own, and then reached between them and down between her thighs. A finger spread through her already wet folds, easily stroking her up and down from opening to clit.
“Oh, fuck,” she panted against his mouth, feeling the vibration of his low chuckle, clearly pleased with the reaction he was getting from her.
No one had ever touched her that way, besides herself. Every other time for her had just been a quick fuck, the man taking what he wanted with her until he was finished. It was always just enough to leave her desiring more but completely unsatisfied, like an itch that was never properly scratched.
She was almost mortified when she felt herself begin to purr but Alastor quickened his pace, circling her clit in tighter, faster circles, spurred on by her reaction. It was enough of a sign from him that he liked her purring, so she relaxed and let her body react the way it wanted to.
Then he began working his way down her body, kissing her neck, spending a moment at each breast, and then her stomach. Her nerves got the better of her when he tried to go lower, and she shot upright moments before he settled his face between her thighs.
“What are you doing?” she gasped.
He looked mortified at her reaction, eyes wide and smile strained.
“Do you not like that?” he asked, reaching out for her hips. She let his hand settle there, thankful for the reassuring touch, but still felt tense and unsettled.
“You-you don’t have to do that,” she stammered.
His eyes stayed steadily on hers. “I know I don’t have to, Mina. Why don’t you want me to?”
“Men don’t . . . men don’t do that to women,” she said, sounding naïve even to her own ears, but she just couldn’t fathom being on the reciprocating end of oral.
He seemed to relax a little as understanding came to his features.
“I promise you, the good ones do,” he said, guiding her back to laying down beneath him.
She followed but was still insecure.
“You don’t have to,” she repeated, but his mouth was already on the flesh of the inside of her thigh, making her shiver with desire and nerves.
“If you don’t like it, I’ll stop. But please, allow me to try?” he asked, peering up from her, mouth only inches from her sex. When she gave a small, hesitant nod, she felt the breath of his sigh warming her flesh before his mouth was on her and she was suddenly very okay with what he was doing.
His tongue matched the rhythm his fingers had made moments before, alternating between long strokes and quick circles. Although she had no experience with it, Mina knew there was no getting better at this than he was. She felt her face heating up as the pleasure overwhelmed her, overstimulating her senses until she was no longer purring, just gasping for air and moaning loudly. She felt tingly from head to toe and when he shifted his weight so that he could curl two fingers inside her, stroking her walls as he sucked at her clit, Mina reached down and took hold of his antlers, watching him work her until she began to see stars. Within seconds she was cumming hard; a deeper, longer orgasm than she had ever experienced.
She collapsed back on the bed, breathing deeply as she felt her body going limp. Alastor had released her from his mouth, wiping his chin with his free hand, and she had a moment where she realized she hadn’t felt the sharpness of his teeth or his claws during that whole wonderful experience, before he was crawling back up her, repeating in reverse the kissing trail up her body until he was back at her mouth. There was a slight lingering scent and taste of her own sex on his face, and surprisingly to her, it only helped turn her on all over again.
It was then she noticed his fingers were still inside of her, and as he lazily stroked his tongue against hers in a deep, sensual kiss, he began moving his fingers again. Long, slow movements, right at the shallow part of her entrance, curling his fingers so that the pads of his fingertips put just the right pressure on that sensitive internal part she barely had registered the existence of before that evening.
Mina moaned against him as he worked her up again, impressively fast, considering she could still feel the aftereffects of her first orgasm.
Right as she was beginning to feel her walls clench at his fingers in earnest, he pulled away from her and settled his weight differently until their hips were perfectly aligned.
“May I?” he asked, but she was already spreading her legs to wrap around him.
“Oh please,” she begged, feeling the tip of him right at her entrance. “Please, please, please,” she whispered.
He was big and now she truly understood his need for foreplay with her in order to prepare her to take him. He guided himself in until he was buried as deep as he could go, the girth and length of his cock stretching her to the point of stinging for a moment before she felt herself relaxing. Alastor looked into her eyes as if searching for any change of heart or hesitation from her. Finding nothing but wanton eagerness in her expression, he began to move.
Mina would later find him to be a rather quiet lover, not one for dirty talk or frequent noises in general, but he did moan quite audibly with that first thrust; a low sound, the static affect breaking it up and making it sound much deeper than his normal voice. She cradled the back of his head as he breathed into her neck, stroking the base of his ears and playing with the soft tufts of fur there.
Together they found a rhythm, a lovely friction that completely filled her up, stroked her inner walls, and rubbed against her clit just right when their hips came together. Mina would never understand why missionary was considered such a ‘vanilla’ position. She loved being face to face with Alastor like this, watching his eyes go black with desire, while also being chest to chest, and hip to hip. He was everywhere, holding her, on top of her, filling her up. No other position could give her this kind of intimacy and paired with the physical pleasure of it, it was perfect for their first time together.
She was so close now, feeling right on the edge of her second orgasm but she needed just a little more. Changing the tilt of her hips, she was able to relax her hips into spreading wider, encouraging Alastor to go deeper and harder into her. He responded immediately to the lusty noises she made as the change in angle built her up, stretching her to the point of nearly being painful, and it was delicious. Her orgasm slammed into her, making her clench hard onto his cock and it was all she could do but whimper as it seemed to continue on forever. Letting go of her grip on the mix of hair and fur near the base of his ear, her hand found an antler again, surprised and aroused that it had grown much thicker and longer as he chased his own completion.
Her body finally began to relax as she came down from her orgasm, just beginning to feel the first stages of overstimulation, when his movements became erratic, and she felt the stinging bite of his teeth into the flesh in the crook of her collarbone as he came inside her. For the first time, without the worry of pregnancy involved in the act, she found she loved the sensation of his cock twitching inside her as he coated her walls with his seed, making her feel incredibly satisfied. She basked in the feeling of being bred; the feminine pride of being claimed, by both his cum and his bite.
Alastor was slowly coming down from his own high; his antlers retreated back to their usual two-pointed form, the blackness in his eyes returning to their normal shade of red.
“I’m sorry,” he panted but she was already purring again. “Was that too . . .”
He trailed off, and she brushed her nose against his, until he gave a soft laugh and responded with the same motion and kissed her.
“I like you like that,” she said. “You can do that to me again, anytime you want.”
They smiled at each other, like the two idiots absolutely smitten with each other that they were, and enjoyed another tender kiss before Alastor finally pulled out of her and shifted onto his side. Mina snuggled into his arms, burying her face into his scarred chest, and began purring in earnest as he lazily stroked her hair and the backs of her ears.
In post orgasmic bliss, they fell into a light sleep like that, still on top of the blankets and tangled up in each other.
A short while later, Mina began to stir, feeling a chill against her bare skin as the heat of their lovemaking finally dissipated from her body. Alastor moved against her, also waking up, and Mina smiled when she noticed the sound of a radio humming to life that accompanied him when he awoke. As much as she would come to love watching him sleep, she would always find that little sound affect to be the most fucking adorable thing about him.
That, and his tail.
She sat upright.
“Alright, love. Let me see it.”
His eyebrows came down in a frown, already knowing what she was asking for, and was not amused.
“I’d rather you join me in the bath,” he said, trying to lure her into something else. Anything else, really.
“You said you’d let me see it!” she whined.
“I only recall specifically using the word ‘later.’ I did not specify when that would be.”
“Alastor,” she said sternly.
“Fine,” he huffed but then continued to lay where he was rather than moving and making it easier to see.
“Well?” she asked, gesturing for him to move.
“I am neither standing for this, nor will I lay on my stomach. This is not a physician’s exam and I refuse to make this anymore humiliating for me.”
“Jaysus Christ, you are a child,” she huffed and got up on her knees so she could more easily peer over him to see his backside.
He curled forward and bit her on her outer thigh, making her jump and squeal, but she didn’t relent.
There it was, in all its fluffy glory, red like his hair but with a black stripe along the bottom side where most deer had stripe of white. It was . . . really cute. But she would never tell him that as it would devastate his massive but fragile ego, and she had a feeling that was exactly why he hid it from view.
She reached over and touched it, feeling the incredible softness for only a second before he reacted viscerally, turning around and grabbing at her hand.
“Are you kidding me?!”
“Sorry,” she said, immediately regretting it. “I’m sorry. If it really bothers you that much, I am. Really sorry.”
He sighed, relaxing at her apology, and pulled her down with him to return to the position they had been in before.
She peppered his chest with kisses, purring again as it seemed to soothe him, and listened as his thundering heart began to slow down. He really was incredibly insecure about that tail of his.
“You know,” she dared, once she was sure he had finally calmed all the way down, “you might like it being touched if you just let me try again.”
He rolled on top of her, kissing her hard and pressing her into the mattress, before standing up and leaving her in bed.
“Ready for that bath?” he asked, holding his hand out to her, completely ignoring her statement.
Next Chapter ->
She took it, eagerly following him out of the room, enjoying the full view of his tail and naked backside that it awarded her, but she didn’t dare try to touch it again . . . that night.
🐰👨👩👧👧 :]
🐰👨👩👧👧 (the Afton Family; what were they like?)
They were as close as you could get to the nuclear family stereotype. William arrived from overseas to attend college in the States, where he would become well acquainted with Henry and Adelaide. He had a rather dreary home life on the English countryside, living in practically a ghost town by all accounts; so getting to leave to a more lively place was a rather welcome change in pace. He had an interest in creating music, though had no prior knowledge of music theory or what have you, instead preferring to play things by ear and self teaching. While he prefers the guitar, he has some skill in playing piano. This would lead him to connect with Henry, who wanted to scrabble together a small band comprised of himself and Adelaide, the two who were practically conjoined at the hip. He has a habit of taking facets of others and absorbing them into himself, leading to his interest in the mechanical. He found himself in some sort of strange relationship between them both. He did love them both, equally. But ultimately ended up choosing to marry Adelaide after they found themselves with their first: Michael. William was truly a loving father at some point in his life, but after the first springlock incident and Evan's death, things started to simply go downhill. Fast.
Adelaide herself was an only child that was born with a silver spoon in her mouth. Not that she abuses this power by any means, but others would in her early life under the guise of “friendship.” A relatively good relationship with her parents, though there were a few disagreements about her choice in career. They wanted her to be a doctor, but Adelaide found much more joy in the performing arts, most particularly dance. I don’t really have them characterized as I don’t like to delve too deep into stuff like that. Hauty, disdainful of the people she chooses to surround herself with, (“a hick and a brit? you’re better than that.”) and completely disagree with her choice in… husband. But… whatever makes her happy, they surmise. She certainly played favorites with Evan with him being the youngest, but none did she love unequally. She kind of favored them all for particular reasons. Elizabeth was the only one with her rusty ginger hair, but Michael was their first, and also had her curly locks even if he was still a brunette like his father. I won’t lie, she became standoffish with Michael after the whole Bite of 83, but came around eventually. Holding them even closer after Charlotte died. Elizabeth enjoyed doing makeup and hair, Michael actually took an interest in her ballet teaching, and Evan really wanted to help with cooking, more particularly playing around with ingredients and dough.
It was when Elizabeth, too, died to another one of William’s damned death machines that she held onto Michael like a lifeline, her eldest and only remaining child. Michael... well, Michael was an attention seeking child from the very beginning. While Adelaide typically stayed at home to care for him while William worked, all he wanted was to have his father's attention, too. He wasn't necessarily a trouble maker by any means, but once he had two more siblings he felt as if he was invisible to them. Oldest sibling syndrome. He loved them, too, he helped care for them, but there's no doubt that in the back of his mind he felt uncared for at points. This would be what led him to take on a more aggressive out look, bullying their youngest out of jealousy. Elizabeth tried as she might to diffuse it, but she could only do so much as their parents were constantly too busy trying to keep things held together to keep a keen eye on them all. "I was kind of an asshole as a kid."
Elizabeth, however, wasn't completely innocent herself. She was very clearly William's favorite, and she reveled in this every moment she could. One could consider her a carbon copy of him in every aspect save for appearance. And also a brat. But not necessarily in the traditional way. She knew she was the "golden child", and often used this to her advantage just to one up Michael. She could practically do whatever she wanted with zero consequence, but she didn't really use this for bad things. However, she did enjoy using it in order to help Charlie, usually just urging William to get her gifts and the occasional toy that Henry wouldn't have otherwise. Many of her crayon drawings served to become inspiration for many of William's machines. Even in her death, she continues wanting nothing more than to impress him, finding safety in refusing to understand that their father had long stopped caring for them all. While Evan didn't really get to grow up enough for a more distinctive personality to shine through, he enjoyed more hands on arts and crafts. Think macaroni and glue, play-doh, even making things out of clay that Adelaide would cook to concrete them. Mugs, little trinkets, all things that she continued to hold onto after his death. I imagine he would've loved to get into pottery or even woodworking when he got older.
𝐌𝐎𝐓𝐇 𝐓𝐎 𝐀 𝐅𝐋𝐀𝐌𝐄
PART ONE
Pairing: Dilf!Jake Sully x reader
Warnings: None for this chapter
Notes: Hiii, sorry for not posting part one for like 7 years <3 I’ve been super busy but i’m going to try and post more now that my writers block has been a bit better and I have the energy to write. Here’s part one, I hope you enjoy and let me know how it is :D
The concept of a crush was a foreign to my adolescent ears until the day it was uttered to me by the other younger Na’vi girls who suddenly became interested in the topic of boys when surveying the young men of the Omatikaya clan. The young men were preparing to leave for duty, their bodies clad in human equipment and their hands gripping human weaponry.
The girls fawned over their appearances, the way their muscles would flex when climbing upon their ikrans, their charming smiles bringing a rosy blush upon their cheeks. The girls would giggle, latching onto each other whenever one of these young soldiers would send a glance to their direction.
Yet I found myself not feeling anything for these young men, not even when they would gaze upon me with brooding eyes that spoke more than words could ever say. Their eyes trailing upon my figure and letting me know that I was now at a stage where I had become desirable. The age of seventeen had been an eye opening era. One that had made me more aware of men that I had ever been before.
All I felt was a strange discomfort and the need to step far away from wherever these sorts of men came from. I could not understand the appeal towards these immature, knuckle-headed boys. The ones who would purposefully cause fights due to their childish boredom. I did not crave their attention, I did not crave anything from them. They were far too immature for my liking.
These boys seemed to crave the more intimate things whilst I craved the deeper connection felt between several of the mates in the clan. I had seen the way they would gaze upon each other as if they were each others worlds. Their eyes unable to leave each other in fear that they would never be able to gaze upon each other again.
These young men did not crave that. Their desires did not go deeper than the surface. I had seen the way the young Na’vi girls had been heart broken, their tears staining their skin and leaving a permanent indent in their heart due to young men’s physical desire that ended the moment he received that he had wanted.
I refused to let myself be that girl. I did not want to shed tears over someone who I did not even desire truly. I had seen the way the mated pairs looked at each other and I did not want anything less.
My entire world seemed to be changed the moment I met Kiri, a soul who’s entire being seemed to be in tune with nature. The moment I saw her dancing along with the trees, I knew that I just had to be friends with her. Her deeper connection with the world around us made our friendship a powerful connection that I could not just let slip through my finger tips.
We first became friends after an incident where a viperwolf almost ripped my head off after I had fallen three branches from the home tree. It’s fangs were bared and it’s eyes bore into mine, it’s being aching to tear into mine. I could not defend myself for I was surrounded by mere sticks and leaves. I anticipated it to be the moment I died, but the sight of an arrow and a soft whimper escaping it’s jaws as the arrow pierced through its body quickly brought me back to reality.
The teenage Omatikaya girl’s figure hopped down from the branches to mine, where she stuck a hand out. The first thing I had noticed about her was her humanoid features, as if she were not fully Na’vi. Her hair was styled differently than those of other Na’vi I had met and her facial features were not quite completely Na’vi.
It wasn’t until later that I learned about her mother Grace and that she had been adopted by the Sully family. She was intriguing, her soul connection to nature made her someone I knew I immediately wanted to befriend. Her spunky attitude and care for her brothers was admirable, she was someone I envied.
We mourned the loss of the viperwolf but we knew it was either my life or his. The return to the home tree was filled with light hearted conversation and a quick forming friendship. She offered for us to spend more time together the following day where her and her family were all going on a hunting trip through the great forest. I had not been familiar with her family, which consisted of her two brothers, her younger sister and her father. I had not pried into what happened to her mother.
That following day I had not expected too much of the oncoming encounter with her family. I had met her brother first after she had run into him. His name was Lo’ak and was annoyed by her presence, seemingly trying to talk to another Na’vi girl when Kiri had interrupted their conversation. He didn’t say much to me, giving me a simple nod in acknowledgement before trailing after the girl again.
Her brother Neteyam had greeted me with a large smile, introducing himself before introducing his younger sister Tuk who also greeted me with a wide smile.
It wasn’t until I was faced with her cheek-reddening father, that I finally knew what a crush was.
He had stepped out from behind the leaves, his voice calling out for his family. The moment I saw him, an unexplainable redness bloomed in my cheeks, a warmth spreading across my face that was impossible to hide. The way he carried himself was noticeable. His whole demeanor spoke power and strength, a kind of strength I hadn’t seen from any of the young soldiers upon their ikrans.
When his eyes caught mine, a charming smile spread across his face and he spoke in the most ear-pleasing voice that has ever graced my ears. “Oh hey, you’re Kiri’s friend. Y/n right?” He asked, to which all I could muster was a simple nod and hum. “I’m Kiri’s father, but you can call me Jake.”
It took me a moment to register his outstretched hand which was beckoning to shake mine and I let out a soft noise before placing my hand in his, the size of his hand compared to mine an immediately noticeable difference. His touch was warm and his grip was strong. I gave him an small, slightly awkward smile in return, trying to hide the crimson stains across my cheeks.
“You okay?” He asked, pulling his hand away before motioning to his own face and across his cheeks with his finger. “You’re a little red.”
“Oh?- yeah, i’m okay.” I quickly said, pulling my gaze away from him to ensure that my blush wasn’t any more obvious, though I could feel his gaze piercing into the side of my face, emitting a soft chuckle as it lingered for a moment before he turned away and it felt like he had stepped off of my chest.
It did not help that I was already plunged into my late teenage years where my emotions seemed to be dictating my every single thought. I could not tell if I actually desired him or if I just desired to want someone, anyone who somewhat fit my tastes.
The Sully’s were all holding their bows in almost defensive stances and I felt like I knew nothing compared to them. Jake Sully had seemingly trained them very well, as if he was born from combat. I held the bow given to me by Neteyam with uncertainty, my grip uncomfortable and my stance stiff. My entire body was not used to this. I had never been taught to hunt or fight by my mother. She did not want me out fighting the sky people.
I glanced down at the bow, adjusting my fingers and loosely holding the arrow, feeling as though it were about to slip from my grasp at any moment. I softly furrow my brows but try to ignore my faults, telling myself I won’t be hunting anyways, I would just leave it to the Sully family and their expertise. I knew that wouldn’t be the case when I felt Jakes eyes watching me intently, his eyes trained on my unsteady hold on the bow.
“Oh no, sweet girl. You hold it like that and you’re not gonna hit anything.” Jake said with a soft chuckle, making his way over to me where he gently pried the bow from my hands and positioned it correctly in his hands to show me how to hold it.
He leaned down slightly as he spoke, “See? You gotta hold it like this so your aim is accurate. You hold it the way you did before and you’re aiming straight for the dirt.”
I give a soft nod even though my attention is squarely focused on him rather than on the actual demonstration. My eyes are trained on his face and I realized it became obvious when Jakes eyes shifted to mine and he softly furrowed his brows, a light expression across his face as he asks in amusement. “You paying attention?”
My eyes widen slightly and I quickly nod, turning my attention to the bow, watching it as if it was the most important item in the world. I knew I was screwed when he handed it to me and looked at me expectantly, waiting to see me hold it the way he showed. I hesitantly took it back, placing it in my grasp and trying to grab at the bits I had somewhat seen from his demonstration, yet I knew I wasn’t holding it right.
Jake let’s out a soft chuckle, gently shaking his head before murmuring, “Like this..”
The feel of his body moving behind mine, his hands placing on top of mine before readjusting the stance has a warm blush rushing to my cheeks. His hands are warm, so is the rest of his body. I can feel it radiating from his presence. His hands enveloped mine as he lifted my arms to demonstrate shooting, his mouth hovering next to my ear as he whispers, “Just like that..”
My limbs felt like they were going to fall off. Is this what every girl feels when she has a crush?
It was later on that trip after Jake had successfully hunted an creature we had come across that I couldn’t find my eyes able to pull away from him. I couldn’t help but compare him to the young men who the girls fawned over. They all seemed to meek and immature in comparison to him. The way Jake handled the creature showed a great physical strength within him.
Finding out that Jake had not always been Na’vi came very unexpected. He seems to be so one with the people and Pandora that you would think he was born in the clan. He was possibly even closer with the Omatikaya than I was. I had heard stories of his great deeds, the way he protected our people from the sky people.
I had been weaving with him and Kiri in their home, Kiri had just left to grab some more supplies, when he spoke out of the blue, “You know, I used to be part of the sky people.”
I looked at him with great confusion, not quite understanding what he meant, immediately thinking he had worked with them as a born Na’vi. He read the confusion across my face and immediately elaborated. “I used to be a sky person, a human. I didn’t expect to grow so fond of the Omatikaya people.. but after I met Neytiri, I couldn’t let them get hurt.” He set his basket down on the floor, turning his full attention towards me.
I lowered the basket in my hands, placing it in my lap as I kept my legs crossed. I thought for a moment before asking, “What was your life like?”
He let out a soft laugh, one that sent a tingle through my stomach. It was a sound I liked hearing. “Back on Earth? Shit. The place is polluted from the air to the water, people only care about themselves, they’re greedy for money and resources- which is why we came here- and.. I couldn’t walk.” His last words were sent in an almost hesitant thought.
I furrowed my brows in confusion and he quickly answered, picking up the woven basket once more to continue weaving. “I lost control my legs in Venezuela, a country back on Earth, while serving in the United States Marine Corps. The United States is where i’m from.”
“Explains the weird accent.” I said teasingly with a soft smile, lighting the mood.
He made a mock offended face, letting out another soft chuckle as he shook his head. “I guess you’re right, I do sound pretty weird to everyone here.”
There was a moment of silence as I hesitated for a moment before softly uttering. “Do you miss Earth?”
He hesitated for a moment in turn as he took a moment to think, his mind pondering the question over before he answered. “I don’t think so. There’s a lot I liked, but there was a lot I also hated. I mean, I miss burgers, movies, dogs… but the life I have here has brought me so much more peace and happiness than I ever felt there.”
My eyebrows softly furrowed at his small list of things, not understanding what any of those are. He could see the confusion across my face and softly laughed, “I guess that all sounds meaningless to you, huh?”
I softly shrugged with a smile.
He smiled, placing his basket down once more. “Let’s see.. a burger is where you would take two pieces of bread, sort of shaped like half circles and put stuff between them, like lettuce, meat, tomatoes. You can put whatever on ‘em, but I think you have to keep the meat on there to make it a burger.”
I softly nodded, beginning to understand. “It sounds.. good.”
His smile widened, “Trust me, it was. The ones you’d get from little restaurants that no one goes to are the best, not like the ones from fast food places where they’ve been stuck in the freezer and then heated up, the ones that you can taste have been made from scratch there and then.”
I could see his look across his face as if he had finally gotten a chance to speak about his life back home, something he had not done very often. It seemed like there was so much for him to say, so many memories that were flooding back. All I could do was watch him with a soft smile on my face, adoration in my eyes as I found a great fascination in everything he had to say, even if it meant nothing to me or if I barely understood. I just liked hearing him talk.
“And.. what’s a mow-vey?” I ask.
He softly chuckled, “A movie?”
I nodded.
“Well, you know those little stories that are put on every now and then by the fire? Where they act out the tales of different warriors? A movie is like that, except instead of it being done live like that, it’s recorded and distributed. Most of the time these movies would be in rooms called theaters, where it would play on a giant screen. You’d eat food called popcorn and have sugar infested drinks like Coke or a slushee.” He uttered.
I softly nodded, “Do these movies tell stories of warriors?”
He nodded, “Yeah, sometimes… but there were also movies about love, fantasy, drama, horror, thriller and a whole bunch of other things. Don’t tell anyone this, but my personal favorite were romcoms.” He said in a teasingly hushed voice and an almost cheeky smile.
I let out a soft chuckle, “I don’t even even know what that is.”
He smiled, “Maybe one day i’d be able to show you. There’s a lot of great classics like 10 Things I Hate About You, The Notebook, Love Actually… I feel like you’d like them. They’re all movies about people falling in love, sometimes when they’re not supposed to.”
He paused for a moment before letting out a soft chuckle. “Forbidden love just seems to be the most interesting. Two people who know they shouldn’t be in love but they just can’t stay away from each other.”
I didn’t speak for a moment, my mind immediately wondering if there was a chance for something like that with us. That if it did ever happen, that there would be no way for us to be with one another the way the others do. It was unrealistic, mostly because I was sure he would never feel that way about me.
“You ever felt like that, Y/n?” He gently asked.
I held his gaze for a moment, not knowing if the way I felt about him was allowed to be mentionable. I decided to softly shake my head. He softly nodded, thinking for a moment before softly ask. “You ever had a mate?”
I had had a few opportunities now and then, but nothing ever came into fruition. Every guy I found myself getting involved with ended up being a disappointment or just ended things right as they seemed hopeful. “I don’t think so.”
“You don’t think so?” He said lightly, tilting his head as if a bit amused. I softly smiled and shook my head.
His eyebrows raised, as if surprised that no one had ever made me their mate. I found myself surprised by this, wondering what he saw in me that others didn’t. A soft smile creeped upon my face as I uttered, “What?”
He softly shrugged, turning his attention away for a moment as he glanced down at the basket in his hands. “Nothing.. just surprised, is all.”
My eyebrows softly furrowed. “Why?”
He held my gaze for a moment, the expression upon his features sending a nervous shiver down my spine. He paused for a moment. He softly shrugged once more, “I thought some boy would have swept you off your feet by now. Most of the clan members are mated by your age. There has to be someone.”
I wish that I could have said that there was. That there was someone that I loved who I was going to spend my life with, but there wasn’t. The only person I wanted was him, and that entire thoughts was unrealistic and something that I should have erased from my brain. I held his gaze for a moment before softly shaking my head. His eyes which held mine displayed a certain intensity I couldn’t quite place.
Before he could utter anymore, Kiri returned, her arms filled with weaving material. She placed them down on the floor near us, letting out a small sigh as it seemed to be quite a mission to carry. I gave her a small smile.
She stepped around it, taking a seat next to me before glancing between her father and I. “I hope I didn’t leave you two in awkward silence while I was gone.”
Jake let out a soft chuckle. “You didn’t.”
Kiri’s eyebrows softly raised, as if surprised that Jake and I found a way to speak to one another in a way that wasn’t filled with silences and possibly awkward moments. She expected that her best friend and her father would find this moment alone a bit strange without her there as some sort of supporting bridge.
“Really? What’d you guys talk about?” She asked, curiosity all across her face.
Before I could speak, Jake raised and pointed towards his woven basket, as if to say that it was the only thing we spoke about. Weaving baskets.
I glanced over at him with a small look of confusion, not truly understanding why he didn’t tell her that we spoke about his life back on Earth. She definitely knew of many things about Earth, yet he seemed reluctant to tell her of everything he shared. He met my gaze but he seemed expressionless, as if it were nothing. I pulled my gaze away, not quite understanding but deciding to brush it off for now.
Kiri let out a scoff, singing out, “Boring.”
My gaze lingered back on Jake, watching the way he drew his attention back to the basket which he had now finished, placing it to the side where he grabbed more weaving materials. Our relationship suddenly felt more personal as I questioned if Kiri did know of everything he had told me. I wondered what made him decide to tell me and not her.
Perhaps it was just for us. Our little secret.
hi i've been in my feels a little bit since vanya posted the family pics and i just need to share it with someone. i am very much following all the competition updates and polls and rankings and techical elements and sport mumbo jumbo, but that's not what i'm in the mood to talk about. i need to rant about mushy emotional things.
i don't know, i just feel like this partnership/friendship/whatevership that b&v have has helped them so much in growing into good grown people and we're still only at the start of it. i can see it in vanya specifically. over the course of this last year he's becoming softer and more relaxed in his own skin and his new life. you can tell that this place bella lead him to has allowed him to be more carefree than he was before. which is especially important considering he lost his parents so young and had to leave his home to escape war. all people he knew before coming to the us, sadly including his brother, he has to chase around the world to actually be with them in real life. places he considered important to him he won't be able to see for years. i can't imagine not being able to see my family home or visit my family cemetary. those are very emotionally difficult things to deal with at such a young age and of course i'm just a spectator on the internet, but i feel like this place he managed to find half way across the world is safe and caring. and he found it by meeting the world's sweetest girl. a girl that believes in herself in spite of the odds and loves people very openly. she is fucking lightning in a bottle and her smile could power cities!!! people like that are rare to find and that girl is his partner. her energy and light make it so easy to forget how hard life can be. it's such an admirable quality of character. it's why people connect to her and her videos, she's welcoming and she radiates warmth and joy. she spreads it wherever she goes. i just find all of that so very moving. there's something so vulnerable and human in their circumstances. because if you really dissect it, them becoming partners saved her career and his life. they found each other by chance, managed to understand each other beyond language barriers and chose to do this thing they love more than anything else together. he repaired the trust her ex-partner broke. he never lets her doubt herself and always tries to catch her when she falls. she gives him peace and space to be childish and silly, even if it's at her expense. again i'm just a spectator, but i think he makes her bolder and she makes him softer. whatever they may be to each other, there's no doubt that they truly enjoy one another. i think that's the exact thing people get so attached to beyond the whole will-they-won't-they booktok fantasy. they make each other grow and you can feel it!!
sorry for waxing poetic about random athletes we found on the internet hahaha. there's just something very "mortifying ordeal of being known" about them, you know? kinda makes me slightly believe that the right circumstances will just find you when you least expect them.
My first instinct was to kinda deflect and say they're in their 'character development era' but honestly this is just such a beautiful message you sent here. I just wanna let it see the light of day (hope you don't mind) because I'm sure others have felt the same about B&V. I know I have.
It's part of what makes their chemistry to interesting to watch. Here are two people who have found themselves in the same place (for a second time), both of them with a dream of success, both of them going through a big change, adjusting to a new reality and still managing to make each other better people in the process. It's a beautiful story, even from the outside looking in 🤍
#i do not condone writing fanfiction about B&V (if you do i have no real way of stopping you ofc) but their story is so 🥹#since i found them I've been thinking it'd make for a great book or show#asks#flores/desyatov#isabella flores#ivan desyatov
lioness.
the treasure of house lannister may not rest untarnished for long.
Pairing: Original female! Lannister x Jaime Lannister
A/n: Why the idea of four Lannister siblings seems that interesting? 🤔
Rate: Teen (+13)
Certainly, Jon Arryn’s funeral had been far from what she expected to change the court’s atmosphere. Such a grotesque death only deserved the show his perturbed widow managed to throw, the memory still clinging to the minds of the witnesses, the fair lady beside him between them.
“It is better for you to stay here.”
“Cersei may need me.”
A hum escapes his lips as they both make their way along the gardens of the Red Keep, far from prying eyes; what could go wrong in a simple stroll with his beloved sister?
“You will be safer here. Besides, I doubt you want to see Robert praising the virtues of the Starks… I sometimes wonder how well did they read that brute…”
A soft giggle escapes her lips, and he decides it is the sweetest sound the keep has heard in ages.
“I received a raven from Father early this morning” her sweet brow furrows as she speaks, her hands clasped at her front, and he can’t help but think that their ideal peace will shatter into tiny little pieces sooner or after. “He wants me to be his heir, and is looking for a man for me to marry to and rule from Casterly Rock when he dies.”
Jaime clenches his jaw, trying his best to hide his feelings. “I will find a way to keep you close,” he promises, though the weight of his words presses heavily upon him. They had found a sort of happy system, the four of them, with his sweet little sister being the anchor to cement it all, even Cersei had grown used to ignore the presence of Tyrion waddling around court, and now the urgency to defile the little lioness threatens to destroy it all. “Has he told you about any potential husband?”
She shakes her head, her golden curls bouncing with the movement. “But you know Father,” she sighs, “he already has someone in mind, someone powerful, or at least convenient to our cause.”
Whenever he looks at her, he can’t help but remember the late lady Joanna, the pride of the West, the apple of their father’s eye. The last time he saw lord Tywin clearly happy was before his lady wife passed away. He wonders if Tywin hopes to see a reflection of his lost happiness through the presence of his youngest cub back home.
“I can try and make him consider some names if you want” he tries to not sound as worried as he is, because the mere idea of being separated from Meredyth Lannister breaks his heart. “Maybe Addam Marbrand can make a good husband, and our house can get close to Ashemark again.”
His sister looks at him thoughtfully, her emerald green eyes distant as though weighing the future. "Addam Marbrand is strong and loyal," she admits, crossing her arms. “You have always been friends.” In her gaze, Jaime can spot uncertainty and a flicker of hope. "I trust your judgment, brother," she decides finally.
Surely Addam could be a nice election, they know each other since they were mere lads and their trust has only grown over the years, but a feeling of unsteadiness takes him by surprise. Is his friendship with Addam truly strong enough to transform into family ties, or is this path fraught with risks that they cannot foresee?
A hint of jealousy stings him deep down. The mere idea of any man claiming a place in Meredyth's life makes his chest tighten. He had more than enough with Cersei being pushed by that brute of Robert Baratheon, he realizes in that moment that he may never be ready to know about any man putting his hands over his sweet little sister.
His thoughts whirl in the silent storm of his mind as he watches Meredyth move besides him, her green skirts carefully caressing the ground beneath her feet, the afternoon sun casting gold across her hair. The tranquility of the moment seems almost mocking with the maelstrom inside Jaime's head.
“At your return, be sure I will ask you about every detail from the journey” Meredyth's voice breaks through his conflicted thoughts, her words teasing yet laced with fondness.
If only she would have been the eldest instead of Cersei… He often thinks about how different things might have been, how that fool of Rhaegar may have chosen her instead of Elia Martell or Lyanna Stark, how he could have been her sworn protector and have cradled her sweetly in his arms every time they met beneath the shadows of the court. The world would have seemed a little less daunting with her by his side.
“At my return you may already be betrothed to any man Father finds suitable” he mumbles, almost gritting, his tension escaping through the tense grip around the hilt of his sword. Meredyth chuckles softly, dismissing his worries with a gentle wave of her hand, and he can’t help but feel sorry for his little lioness, delicate and resilient, forever entangled in the web of politics spun by their father. Yet beneath her laughter, Meredyth's eyes betray a flicker of understanding, an unspoken acknowledgment of their shared reality.
“The truth is that I will miss you. I will certainly miss the gardens, debating with Tyrion over anything, listening to your stories," she confides, her voice laced with a hint of wistfulness. "And I will certainly miss our walks.”
"I will miss those too," he admits, his voice barely audible over the whisper of the evening breeze, not being able to believe how that kind-hearted woman has just assumed her fate with no quarrel.
She takes one of his hands between hers, the tip of her fingers brushing his skin with a care he always missed in their sister. Her face, though smiling, holds a trace of sadness, like a shadow lingering beneath the sunlight.
“Do you think you could travel with me back home?” Her gaze lingers on him for a moment, filled with hope and an unspoken longing.
Oh, if only she would have been his twin and not Cersei…
The newest to join The Water Vipers, after Nadia saved his life, he intends to take many lives in her honor when needed. Antagonists The Thane: Arvid Gunnarsen of the Eagle-Eye clan Arvid Gunnarsen was bred and born to be a ruler. Though his body may not be as strong as many of his peers, or his clan mates, his mind was sharper, stronger than any others. Blessed with the nickname of The Cunning. This Shrewd man married Thane Helga, who after ten years of marriage, finally conceived a child and died during labor, which, much to what Arvid wished, gave him a strong boy to bring together the Raven Foot and Eagle Eye clans together in their alliance. And, conveniently to Arvid, made him the defacto ruler of White Haven and its surrounding environs. He has brought great wealth and influence to White Haven, but is known for his usage of assassins, spies, and courtiers to keep his realm secure, as much as his armies and axe. The Sister-Initiate Assassin: Emily "Emy" Wolfe Much like many of the Sisters of Loira, Emily's past isn't well-known. Knowing their history, she more-than-likely came from the dredges of society. Though her name is very much from the East Marches, no one dared ask her anything, unless it concerned the job the sisters were contracted for. A brutal killer still new to the sisterhood and willing to do anything to make her way in the organization.
What is A Knife in the Dark?
Set in the land of Norweld, a large continent bordered by the Norweldian Sea to the west, the Dragonspine Mountains to the north, the great expanse of the Wyrdeep forests to the east, and the shifting sands of the Tehir to the south. Once all governed under a singular empire hundreds of years ago, now lies as a scattering of petty kingdoms, merchant republics, and loosely-aligned tribes and villages.
With a goal for one major heist to not just raise the respect and standing for The Water Vipers, and to make herself and her associates rich, Nadia hatches a plan to rob Thane Arivd after his return from raiding across the ocean as his ships were laden with exotic goods, gold and hack silver, and various finery that would fetch beyond a princely sum.
Though the heist goes off without a hitch, a little agate gemstone that Nadia found, and to everyone's surprise, imbued with rare magical powers that has not only Arvid trying to reclaim it, but a shadowy organization who will kill everyone and destroy everything in their way to get it.
What will Nadia sacrifice to keep such power? Or will she join the growing pile of bodies in pursuit? And what does a forgotten elven god want with it?
𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐚𝐫 ||𝐇.𝐀𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐲
summary : Haymitch finds solace in a friendship with young (Y/N). Now Haymitch is outside, watching. (Y/N) is in the Arena, fighting.
song inspo: "There's no morning glory, it was war, it wasn't fair" - The Great War by Taylor Swift
pairing : Haymitch Abernathy x fem!reader (platonic)
word count : 1.8 k
contains : angst, hurt no comfort, betrayal, found family trope, violence, some gore, death, this story is set way before Katniss and Peeta's games. Also, first time writing for this character so probably a bit OC Haymitch hahaha.
a/n : Here you have my first moodboard !!! I wanted to try and capture the vibes of the story in three images and I'm pretty proud of myself. Anyways, I hope you enjoy the story :) PD: shoutout to @sarahisslytherin for being so supportive everytime I have a crisis hahaha. Comments are always appreciated 🩷
“I think it’s time I have another dose of that medicine they've sent'' she said as a cue for him to get up from his spot and hand her the remedy inside the metallic jar. (Y/N) had been sick for a day and a half and, even though it was the boy's fault that they had encountered the monster that had bitten her, she wasn’t holding it against him. She knew she could trust him ; at the end of the day, the male tribute from her district had made an alliance with her and she had been doing everything in her power so that he didn’t die. He stood up and handed her the jar.
Haymitch had awoken suddenly after falling asleep on the couch while watching the games in the room designated to the mentors. The constant worry was affecting his sleep schedule and his appetite detrimentally. Not for the boy, no ; he didn’t give a shit about that brat who had skipped all the training sessions and had dismissed his mentor every time he tried to give them valuable advice. He was anxiously picking his lips for her, for (Y/N).
People thought Haymitch had met her after the Reaping, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. Ever since (Y/N) was little, she roamed the District streets in solitude, as her mother had died and her father was extremely neglectful towards her. A younger Haymitch had recently become the District 12's victor and was beginning to develop a certain addiction to alcohol when, one cold afternoon, he encountered a young child by the gates of Victors Village.
Her sparkly eyes caught his tired gaze and a stare contest began. "I don't have time for this bullshit" he crankly thought while looking away. She asked him his name and that if that big house was his. He turned around and wondered whether he should engage in a conversation with the child who obviously had no better place to be at. He noticed the kid was underfed and didn't wear any winter clothes. The heart that had stopped beating after surviving the Hunger games came back to life , like a phoenix being reborn from its ashes. From that day on a very special bond was created between the two unfortunate souls. He was still very grumpy and had a little problem with drinking, but (Y/N) made him want to do better. She was incredibly smart and her sarcasm was one of the very few things that made the former tribute laugh. Their talks and dinners were a secret to the rest of the world ; he couldn't risk hurting the girl he had grown to love as a daughter.
He soon discovered her birthday was the day after the Reaping. This year she would turn 19 and the panic the Reaping used to cause her would finally end. Just one more year of not getting chosen and she could live a peaceful life, just like she had always dreamed of. The latter year Haymitch had been talking about taking her in as his daughter, as her father had also passed away. But before that could happen, the most disgustingly ironic thing happened.
"(Y/N), (Y/N) (Y/L/N)"
One day, she only needed one more day. But it seemed useless to whine about something that would not change anyway. The other tribute was a boy nobody really talked to, so neither she nor Haymitch had any idea of what to expect from him. To say that the mentor was devastated was an understatement. But he could not show it, his face impassible as ever instead.
He was there for every meltdown before the dozens of events, for every doubt she could have about how to make it out of the Arena alive, for every nightmare about what fate had planned for her. Haymitch observed with a worried frown how nobody approached (Y/N) during training week ; she was very astute but her mentor had stressed the importance of making alliances in order to have more chances to survive, and seeing how she was going to be all alone out there compressed his chest with acute pain.
He did everything in his power to prepare her for the multiple dangers she could be facing out there. Still, Haymitch’s mind couldn’t help but explore the darkest scenarios ; optimism was never one of his qualities. In the end, the apathetic boy from 12 decided to make an effort at the end of training season and he turned out to be a magnificent and stealthy climber ; he also started to get close to (Y/N) and they decided to team up. The change of attitude shocked Haymitch but since (Y/N) was much more calm and focused, he didn't put too much thought into it.
The District 12 mentor stared at the bright screen in front of him and watched how (Y/N) was sound asleep. The last 3 hours had been pretty dull on their part of the prefabricated habitat : he had gone out to collect some wood and after he had returned, he lit a fire and offered to watch out for any intruders while she slept.
Suddenly, Haymitch noticed how the young male had started pacing back and forth in a nervous manner. His instinct of suspecting of everything anyone does kicked in very quickly. The tribute started sobbing heavily as he wielded the dagger he had managed to obtain from the cornucopia a few days earlier. His shaky hands lifted the weapon in the air and, with all the strength the teenager possessed, he stabbed her.
The blade of his dagger penetrated her back with disturbing ease. He felt as if someone had put him on autopilot and, despite (Y/N) turning to feebly try to defend herself from the unexpected attack, he kept her still against the cold ground and continued to inflict the fatal wounds.
Her shuddering screams reached her assailant's ears like a distant echo. On the television, however, (Y/N)'s last words were perfectly understandable. His name. She was screaming his name. Haymitch couldn't quite detect whether the screams were a conscious call as a hurried form of farewell or a primal instinct in search of comfort triggered by a delusional pain that caused her to abandon all logic or coherent thought. If he had to bet, he would go for the second option, considering how quickly she was bleeding to death and the panicked expression on her face as she realized her life was rapidly coming to an end.
The stabs were becoming significantly weaker and that could only mean that the adrenaline rush that had originally enabled him to act in favor of his secret plan had slowly faded, only to leave him stranded in the tragic reality he had created. The screams stopped quite quickly, as she was choking on her own blood. The lack of cries caught the attention of the aggressor, who looked down and saw how (Y/N) breathed out for the last time. His shirt was a crimson mess. However, nothing could compare with the bloody puddle that was coming out of her body.
Leaving no time to mourn or process the scene in front of him, the Careers appeared and found the violent scene already over. Without an ounce of remorse or repulse, one of the District 1 tributes made their way towards the paralyzed teen and the corpse.
“There’s no time to waste. Give us her supplies, we’ll take them to our hidden spot in the skirts of the mountain. Meanwhile, you must go to the Cornucopia and bring some more food and weapons. You’ll join us later” The commanding voice of the male tribute intimidated the boy from 12 who obediently began to hand them what used to be (Y/N)’s : the matching axes, the food she had collected and had determined to be safe to consume, the medicine that was supposed to help her heal from the bites of the venomous creature.
Haymitch beheld the horrific scene shown on the gigantic TV totally disassociated from reality ; he couldn’t move but the uneasiness crawling up his skin created a tight and uncomfortable feeling that he urgently needed to shake off. How could the boy be so stupid, so naive ? The Careers would kill him after he had completed the tasks they had ordered him to do; he was just a pawn in their master plan to win that hellish competition.
The camera pointed towards the interior of the cave where the body of the young woman laid still. Haymitch could barely recognize the corpse; that could not be the girl that brought light back to his life after living in the dark for so long or the young adult who respected him but also held him accountable when he messed up. No, that was not her. His brain could not assimilate the idea of her dying in such a vile and miserable way. That scum, poor excuse of a man would regret breaking his word, backstabbing his daughter like only a coward would.
He wished him a slow, painful and sanguinolent death. Actually, he wished he could have entered that damned Arena and done the job himself ; if you want something done right do it yourself, right? After a couple of seconds, the sound of the canyon and the image of (Y/N) projected in the sky appeared on the TV and as fast as they came, they disappeared from the screens, moving on to something much more entertaining for the expecting audience.
He quickly excused himself from the room before anyone could begin to notice the grief in his expression. In the quietness of his private room, he started wailing and throwing everything in his way around, tearing all his belongings to pieces as a way to channelize his pain. After a while, he stopped only to approach the drinks cabinet provided by the generous Capitol, and he poured himself one of the many drinks he would have that night and the days to follow.
His heart began to develop another stone wall around itself, but this time it would never ever be destroyed, not like (Y/N) had managed to all those years ago. This time he would drown all his sorrow and any kind of emotion in all the types of liquors he could find. He would close himself to the world ; nobody would carve him open again, nobody would get so close to the real version of himself. He vowed then and there to abandon all hope and just let the years go by until the arrival of his final day.
He exited the room only to sit on the balcony floor. While staring at the night sky, he felt a tear rolling down his left cheek ; after releasing a shaky breath, he raised the glass that contained his numbing remedy and murmured :
" 'till we meet again, sweetheart"
The Diviner (Part I)
(Morpheus x Prophetess Reader)
Synopsis: An ordinary outing with Hob Gadling turns sour when you have a vision of someone's death. You must do everything in your power to stop it.
Warnings: Mentions of death
Word Count: 1385
A/N: I'm so excited to share this with you all! My first (intentional) multi-part fic! A massive shout out to the lovely @7-wonders for helping me through this with her insights and suggestions, you definitely made me feel better about this. But still, after reading this so many times, I feel like it's the worst thing I've written, so, of course, that means I have to release it into the universe and let it go. And with that, I hope you enjoy!
Series Masterlist | Part II
You never thought it would come to this, standing before Dream of the Endless, ready to die.
—
Living amongst humans, you hardly crossed paths with the Endless. The only one you really saw was Death. You sought her out sometimes. Immortality was lonely if you didn’t know how to navigate it.
In one particular meeting, she sent Hob Gadling in her place. He became a confidant, even better than Death on some occasions. He was closer to what you were—a human given immortality. And you, a seer, an oracle, a prophetess—able to see the future and walk through it—an ability you never asked for.
Life was a funny, fickle thing.
It had been hundreds of years since you last saw Morpheus. You encountered him and Destiny long ago but would never forget what they did.
In the 15th century, you were strolling through a meadow of wildflowers as tall as trees one moment, only for them to melt away and reveal Destiny and Dream.
That dream had been your last.
It was easy to despise them at first. You watched every member of your family die. You barely aged, and when the whispers began, you fled.
Every new place unfolded into the same pattern. You developed friendships, found love, and built your new life from the ground. You foretold their deaths, fled when people grew suspicious, and returned to watch those you loved lowered into the earth.
It was like breathing to hate them, but unlike you, things changed.
You stopped seeking out the expectations of human life, stopped living day by day, and started seeing the bigger picture.
You hadn’t realized how you could influence your visions until you wandered, not because you had to, but because you wanted to.
Destiny gave you this life because it was what he had to do, and you were able to help stop so many terrible things with it. You managed to evacuate an oceanside village before a flood, left anonymous tips so the authorities could catch murderers, and pulled a woman out of the way of an oncoming car—one that would go on to change the world.
But you couldn’t see everything. You couldn’t see your destiny. You weren’t Endless or all-knowing. And then you hated Destiny more for all the horrible things he let happen—all the people that perished because he refused to interfere—because you didn’t see.
Death and Hob quelled some of your anger. Their stories of Morpheus were more enlightening than you would have liked.
He hadn’t given you this power. He only let Destiny find you through your dreams so he could bestow it. Still, guilt by association was damning. And you always wondered why he helped Destiny in the first place.
But to ask him, he’d have to enter the Waking, and according to Death, that was something he did not do.
That was another thing you missed—dreaming. The escapism that so many needed, you could not partake in. Your days and nights were full of visions. And unlike dreams, you remembered all of them.
—
You’re clutching your side, staring into his blue eyes—your veins on fire.
You want him dead.
—
You appreciated the routine you established with Hob throughout the years—brunch on Sundays, then a walk to your bench at the park.
You were halfway through your meal when he broached a topic that had become a weekly discussion.
“My students would love to hear your side of things.”
An unimpressed look shaped your features.
“My side of things nearly cost me my life,” you said, sipping your tea.
“Ah, yes, I forgot you aren’t privy to a centennial death meeting with Dream,” he said.
“Yes,” you hummed in amusement. “Must be nice to choose when you die.”
“It has its perks.”
You huffed, rolling your eyes playfully.
“Now, now, a little respect for your elders!” he laughed.
You raised a brow. “I’m pretty sure age is redundant at this point.”
He shrugged. “As long as I get a birthday cake.”
“I thought you only do that every decade?”
“I was thinking of switching things up. You only live once, you know!”
You both burst out laughing, trying to quiet to not disturb the other patrons.
“Just consider it,” he said after settling. “I think I’m beginning to bore them.”
“You? Never,” you said.
His mouth opened, eyes alight, and then your head dropped forward. You had enough cognizance to catch it with your hands as flashes played behind your lids.
Morpheus trapped.
A silhouette loomed over him.
And Death, leading her brother away.
Hob’s warm hand on your forearms helped pull you out.
“Are you alright?” he asked. “They don’t usually last that long.”
You breathed slowly; your head still heavy.
He said your name.
“I’m fine,” you mumbled. “But we need to find Morpheus.”
Hob’s voice lowered. “What’s going to happen to Morpheus?”
You looked up, somewhat steadily. “Someone’s going to kill him.”
—
This is what you wanted, isn’t it? To be reunited with everyone you lost.
Then why are you petrified?
—
You were in the park amongst a crowd after shooting from your seat and leaving Hob to take care of the check.
It was your best chance to find Death here. There were far too many people for something not to happen.
Hob called your name, running up beside you.
“Did you have to take off like that?”
You scanned the area as you spoke. “I have to warn Morpheus.”
“I know,” he heaved, “But don’t you know when it will happen?”
You shook your head. “I couldn’t tell. It was bright, but it was indoors. And it went by so fast.”
“Okay, what else did you—hey!”
There!
She was good at blending in, but you could sense her power.
And it seemed she sensed yours because she faced you as you approached. And where a smile would normally bloom, a frown took hold.
“What’s wrong?” she asked, clearly concerned.
“I saw your brother die,” you said. “But you already know that, don’t you?”
Her eyes widened. “You had a vision?”
“Have you warned him?” You ignored her question.
“I…No, I haven’t.”
“Then we need to. Can you call Morpheus somehow?” Your mind was running rampant, scenario after scenario, and how to combat them playing out.
She said your name. “If it’s my brother’s time…”
“No. There’s no way he's dying if I can help it. I wouldn’t have seen it if I couldn’t do something!” You hated this feeling bubbling up, like constriction from the inside.
Morpheus had been an object of your detestment for so long, but he had also opened the door for you to save so many. The least you could do was protect him in return.
“Okay! Okay,” she said, wanting to calm you. “Let’s go somewhere private.”
Once you were back at your place, Death called to Dream through her sigil. And while you stood, anxious, Hob sat with one leg over the other, a firm look on Death.
“Sister.” Morpheus appeared without a sound. Or perhaps he did make one, and you were too in your head.
He faced you as calmly as the night you met. “Seer.”
You hadn’t seen him in centuries, but had he been this ethereal when you met?
“Morpheus.”
“Why have you summoned me, sister?” Morpheus asked.
“Someone’s planning to kill you,” you interrupted, arms crossed.
His face pinched ever so slightly. “You’ve seen this?”
You nodded.
“Is this true?” Morpheus looked to Death.
She hesitated. “I don’t know. And that’s what worries me.”
“Hold on a moment.” Hob waved a hand. “You’re saying you have no knowledge of Morpheus' murder.” He pointed to you. “And yet you’ve seen it.”
“Then maybe there’s still a way to save you,” you said to Morpheus. “Surely Death of all people has to know when someone will die.”
Death let out a slow sigh. “I hope that’s the case.” Then met your gaze. “The only comfort I take in all this is your vision. It tells me there’s a chance.”
“So, what do we do?” Hob asked.
“We find out who wants Morpheus dead,” you said. “And hope we can stop them.”
Luz’s Influence
Warning: This post was SEVEN pages long, given the... range of subject matter to cover. It’s purely self-indulgent as a retrospective over the series, how far we’ve come; A victory lap of all the good Luz did and the people she helped, who came together over this commonality for her birthday.
It would be impossible to truly capture the enormity of Luz’s influence on the Boiling Isles, the positive influence she’s brought to this world as a vessel of change and guidance… So I’ll attempt a relatively brief summary. RELATIVELY brief… And yeah, I’ll be taking into account a bit of butterfly effect here;
Luz made Eda and King so, so happy! With Eda especially, she got her to come to terms with her curse, accept her disability, and forgive herself for what she’s done with it. It allowed Eda to make amends with her father Dell, and work with him to cultivate a new generation of Palismen… Similarly, Eda made amends with her former principal Bump, with Hexside no longer being as much a source of trauma; Eda was invited to chaperone, and she became less lonely as she became a mentor to other kids.
Eda always wanted to learn as much as she could, just like Luz, but never got the chance. But now she can help people learn in the university, taking education to a level beyond what Hexside got, even as Hexside allowed the multi-track learning she desired as a kid! Luz gave Eda the chance to really enact the social change she wanted to as a kid and even as an adult, her life not wasted, and gave Eda a newfound purpose.
Luz allowed Eda to open up, make amends with her sister Lilith, and get her back. Eda reconnected with Raine, finally being honest about the curse with them, healing their heartache. Eda vocalized her struggles with Gwen, who stopped wasting her life on a pyramid scheme, and accepted her daughter’s disabilities.
Eda stepped up as a mentor and parent; Learned to let kids make their own choices and draw their own conclusions, instead of merely telling them to think a certain way, because she said so. Thus, Eda avoided the authoritarianism of the covens, encouraging critical thinking in Luz. And she began to truly adopt and embrace King as her son and vice-versa, learning to be more honest with her kids and not have to always hide the truth; Her found family and what Eda chose for her life was just as valid as the blood family she was given.
King found a friend to truly confide in, and not just a parent; But he truly got a mother out of Eda thanks to Luz. Thanks to Luz, King felt valued, like his interests and people like him truly mattered, and he came to terms with the truth of his past and let go of delusions of grandeur, reassured he still mattered. King became less selfish and a better friend, more mature and mindful of others, even as he got to pursue art. King made friends with others who felt overlooked, such as Gus and Edric. He really grew up with Luz, learning to share and connect with people, seeking to find his dad, and getting just that with an “I loaf you” from the Titan.
King realized he didn’t want to be a god or a titan, he didn’t want power; He just wanted simple happiness and friendship, embraced his identity as a person and not a symbol. He became humble, and really wizened with his age, adopting a lot of compassion as well. He eventually became an older sibling to the Collector, as Luz was to him, passing on the cycle of kindness and ending the cycle of hatred between the Collectors and Titans. He brought a new era of glyph magic to succeed his father’s especially, no doubt assisting many other witches for ages. And King got a friend who could stay with him forever, even when he outlived the rest.
Hooty was lonely, a weirdo even among weirdoes; But thanks to Luz, the crew began to value and appreciate him more, expressing it more openly. Because of Luz, Hooty really felt like he did good with his friends as his self-esteem and loneliness ebbed, especially in meeting Lilith, who fulfilled an emptiness in his life that Hooty suffered from.
Lilith came to terms with her guilt over the curse, accepting the consequences of her actions while at the same time forgiving herself. She escaped an abusive coven and learned to individualize, express herself and her vulnerabilities, and ask for help. Lilith was finally recognized not as an inferior sister to Eda, but as a legitimate witch in her own right, helping Luz discover glyph combos. She rekindled her relationship with her mother, making up for a neglected childhood as she healed.
Lilith learned to be herself, to not apologize for her interests, no matter how niche, and not need the approval of others. Lilith became more wary of emotional abuse tactics thanks to Luz opening her eyes, something she used to return the favor, and let go of SO much bitterness; As a result, she stopped projecting her jealousy and worship onto King, treating him like a nephew. She became kinder, stopped treating Amity as a pawn and eventually became a friend to her, too. Lilith got to live her dream and hyperfixation, and revel in being a nerd.
Willow learned to truly express and speak up for herself, not hide who she was, pursue the magic she actually wanted to do, instead of being locked into another one fit for her. Willow was able to rise up and fight back against people who hurt her, and be appreciated and recognized as legitimately good in a lot of things, no longer a meek wallflower, but a beloved and respected leader in her own right.
Willow got closure with Amity, finally rekindling their friendship and learning why they split apart, even as she got to vent her frustrations and have them acknowledged. She developed a sense of confidence and self-esteem, and was recognized by her dads. Willow even managed to defy bullies like Boscha, getting them to finally stop, and befriended another in Skara. She got to indulge in sports and found another friend in Hunter…
Willow came to terms with her past thanks to Luz; She accepted that she was once weak and still was sometimes, realizing her vulnerability was also okay and not worthy of punishment, either. She didn’t have to struggle with the burden and pressure of stepping up as a caretaker and only that, these two sides of her weren’t contradictory, and as a result Willow avoided becoming like Boscha. She found people who recognized her power, who’d change for her, and were willing to take care of Willow in return.
Gus became more confident, more mature and more of a mentor in his own right, after Luz acted as an older sister to him. He got to explore the human realm, his passion, and become an ambassador as he always dreamed, introducing other kids to his interest. Speaking of, Gus may have lost the HAS, but he still managed to help others feel like they belonged, including Willow, Mattholomule, and Hunter.
Gus realized his illusions weren’t cheap party tricks, they were legitimate and valid magic in their own right, and he didn’t have to express strength in conventionally masculine ways. Gus wizened up, becoming less naïve, but also learning to trust in his own abilities, in his perception and efficacy as a person, and forgive himself for any mistakes.
He learned to believe in himself, and especially not be paranoid from having his trust taken advantage of, made a fool; Gus was not a fool. His kindness was not a mistake, maybe he needed to be more careful, but the fact that other people took advantage was not his fault, it was theirs. His compassion was a generally great thing for the world, and by continuing to believe in it and people, he made friends with Mattholomule and Hunter, and helped a forgotten old Illusionist find a new generation of kids to teach and appreciate their magic.
Amity became less toxic, less of a perfectionist who believed in rules and constantly achieved to be the best. Amity learned she could just be herself, not constantly strive to outperform others, because life wasn’t a competition. She learned to open up, rediscover and forge her own identity in the wake of Odalia’s abuse, and finally stand up to and cut her out of her life as well. Amity’s relationship with her family improved, her siblings becoming more supportive and understanding, her father realizing his mistakes and changing for Amity.
Amity believed she was only good for what she could do for others, constantly felt the need to justify her existence. With Luz, she could finally relax and be at peace with herself, find love, and indulge in being a nerd. She got to do Abominations her way, and set healthy boundaries for herself, knowing she deserved better and demanding as such in her relationships. And Amity learned to respect people’s privacy, reconnected with Willow and made up for her guilt.
She was inspired to carry on the kindness that Luz started, contributing to Hunter’s rehabilitation. Amity figured out what she wanted to do with her own life, and became happy, accepting her flaws and supposed shortcomings. Amity developed an open mind, more mindful of how she treated others and especially herself, and how people needed to do things differently and that was okay. She became free.
Hunter escaped the fate of so many Grimwalkers before him; He got to live. He got to escape Belos’ abuse, and find his own path in life. Hunter was so scared of dying, so scared of being hurt, but he learned to relax and be at ease, and found his first friend in Flapjack. He could connect with wild magic, the things he was actually interested in, and even with his own biological family in the Clawthornes.
He found a mentor in Darius, came to terms with the fact that he wasn’t special, because Hunter could choose his own destiny, and always wanted to anyway. Hunter came to terms with his trauma, with the physical and emotional scars; He learned to let that motivate kindness and accept others, and he learned what real friendship looked like. Hunter found his own friends, didn’t need to put up a mask to create a façade of strength, and learned to communicate his love for the people who mattered to him, and fight for something he wanted.
Hunter could move on from the past; His own, that of Caleb’s, the one associated with Philip. And he got to spread the joy of palismen that he got from Flapjack to other witches, so that they may also find their first friend and be guided. Hunter found people who could unconditionally support him, and accepted his disability, no longer ashamed of his lack of bile magic. Even if he didn’t achieve full magic, with Flapjack, Hunter could move and fly on his own now too. He learned to be an actual kid for once, and accept his status as a clone.
Luz’s own mother Camila managed to heal from the loss of her husband Manny, and she came to terms with her own weirdness. Camila was spared the grief of watching her child suffer alone, and rekindled their relationship to be closer to each other, not having to worry. Camila accepted what happened to her was wrong, and that she did not save herself, nor was she saving Luz; By defying conformity, Camila loved her daughter and herself, forgiving both. She found Vee and with both daughters, Camila found it easier to open her mind, but especially to defend that which she already loved and respected for existing.
Speaking of Vee, she found a family and home, a mother who accepted her for who she was. Vee no longer had to hide herself, and she found fellow misfit friends in the human world, as well as a sister in Luz. Vee came to terms with her trauma, allowed to handle it at her own pace, and eventually returned to the isles. Similarly, Vee’s siblings also found happiness, and none of them would have to worry about being hunted; They were safe and could live simple lives. Vee understood herself through Luz and vice-versa.
Flapjack managed to fill the empty hole of his grief and regret over losing Caleb, failing to protect his witch; He managed to save a ‘son’ of Caleb’s, Hunter, and found someone after all this time. In a way, Flapjack made up for Caleb’s death by giving Hunter a full life as a witch who could enjoy magic, away from Philip; And even if Flapjack died, he was finally reunited with Caleb and Evelyn, whom he missed after all these centuries.
Emira took her sister more seriously, stepping up as an older sibling to Amity and encouraging her to be happy; And in her selflessness, Emira became less concerned about looking perfect, and fine with her imperfections, not needing to hide them. Luz became a friend for her, and Emira got to discover her own paths and interests in life through the Healing track. At the same time, Emira didn’t need to worry about having no identity around Edric, nor did she have to compensate by leaving him behind. Emira reconnected with Alador, and made new friends in her profession, forging her own relationship with her father.
Edric felt like a misfit and a failure, the loser of the family, the un-favorite child. But he was allowed to try different things, finding a proper mentor in Eda and someone who could relate to him in King. He went from a bully to Amity, to someone who’d injure himself just to express love and appreciation for her, venturing into the unknown at one point to find his little sister. Edric got to find something he was good at, a beloved pet in Batric, and not hide his own imperfections either; He became a teacher to kids, passing on the kindness Eda gave him, and reconnecting with his father to look just like him. Edric made other friends, and no longer had to fear being alone, dependent on Emira for companionship, forming a healthier relationship with her.
Alador escaped a toxic marriage, realized how much he was overworking himself, and reconnected with an old childhood friend who might become more… His and Darius’ rift was healed. Alador realized how unhappy he was, how unhappy and neglected his kids were, and made a decision both for them and himself, finally able to reconnect and spend time. His inventions were no longer used for harm, Blight Industries was destroyed by his own hand, as Alador worked to undo Belos’ coven sigils and free magic itself. He could do what he wanted with his life, and pursue whatever things caught his interest.
Bump got to give his students the learning opportunities they actually wanted, and really step up as a Principal. His failures in kids like Eda were made up for, as Eda found happiness with Hexside again, and he finally got to be brave against the coven that mandated single-track learning, opting to give that to his students. Bump became beloved by the kids, proving Faust wrong, and encouraging a constructive approach to learning. He could retire happily, knowing his school was in good hands, and pass magic to other generations as part of the cycle.
The Bat Queen got over her trauma over being abandoned; She allowed other palismen to make their own choices, to make up for their own hurt pasts. Her children were taken care of, got to grow up, even as abandoned Palismen found new owners to fulfill the loneliness they felt. She and the palismen were no longer rejects, they could be loved, and thanks to Luz, a new generation of Palismen were being cultivated; No longer devoured by Belos, with Dell and Hunter helping bring back the population and tradition. Palismen like her would no longer be cast out.
Mattholomule became less obsessed with power and status, standing up to his bullies Bria, Gavin, and Angmar, and unlearned the toxicity of Glandus. He made friends with Gus, finally accepting his kindness, and became more secure in himself, learning to appreciate illusions and not be seen as a loser anymore. Mattholomule became kind, working to direct people under the Collector’s rule, and he reconnected with Steve, who no longer enslaved himself to the Emperor’s Coven. Mattholomule self-actualized as a builder, creating new things and expanding the library alongside Lilith.
Boscha no longer had to project power to feel in charge, to feel safe; She could simply let others exist, and not worry about life as a competition. She backed down from bullying Willow, and after losing Amity and Skara, realized how much she needed her friends and appreciated them, reconnecting with Amelia and Cat. Boscha saw herself in someone she once hurt, and stood up to Kikimora, allowing herself to be vulnerable in order to accept help. She didn’t have to rely on a codependent relationship with Amity, who helped give her the bravery to move on and stop holding onto people.
Skara stopped being a bully, cutting herself off from Boscha; Instead, she found new friends in the Emerald Entrails, and in other misfits as well. Viney, Jerbo, and Barcus got to practice the magic they wanted, as the multi-track learning they fought for became widely accepted; They were no longer losers and changed society thanks to Luz. Barcus became a teacher, and Viney and Jerbo helped to undo the damage of the coven sigils that divided their lives. Amelia and Cat no doubt had a better friendship with Boscha, who learned to be less possessive.
In general, the kids and everyone at Hexside were freed; Teachers mourning the loss of their opportunities could give it to the students, who weren’t as constrained by rules and the decision to pick a coven. They could choose for themselves, and even found palismen thanks to the Bat Queen and Eda forming a friendship. This opened up other sports besides Grudgby, such as Flyer Derby.
Gwen made up for her mistakes as a parent, accepting both daughters’ curses, realizing how much pain she’d put them through, so they didn’t have to go through anymore. She reconnected with Eda and Lilith, who she saw become happy, and stopped wasting her life to a pyramid scheme. Her husband Dell was put at ease to see Eda forgive herself for the loss of his eye, and became a grandfather to King; And with the Bat Queen and Hunter, compensated for the loss of his carving skills by allowing Palismen to still come to life.
Steve realized how unhappy he was, the wrongness of what he was doing as a covenscout, and what was done to him by the coven. He reflected and ultimately learned to change, finding freedom in rebellion, and could hang out with his brother Mattholomule more. Steve went on a journey of self-discovery, finding a therapist and helping his mentor Lilith, even as he helped King come to terms with not wanting to be a monster anymore. Once a fanatical servant, Steve got to think for himself and question the beliefs he was taught, having a humbler outlook on life and people.
Raine got to see the woman they loved finally let them in, and no longer had to despair over a lost relationship, as they could help. Likewise, they healed from the trauma of their breakup, with Raine no longer feeling the need to lie to Eda when defying Belos. They found other people to fight with in Darius and Eberwolf, met Katya. Raine dedicated their entire life to undoing Belos and his coven system and finally did so, helping deal a personal final blow to Philip’s face as vengeance for all they’d been forced to do. Raine was freed, no longer having to pretend or be controlled, and found another palisman as well.
Darius also worked to undo the covens and succeeded. He and Eberwolf saved the isles, and Darius overcame his grief over losing his mentor. He stopped projecting his pain onto Hunter, and broke the cycle, doing the previous Golden Guard proud by saving Hunter’s life. He reconnected with old friends Raine and Eda, as well as Lilith, and especially Alador. Darius came to terms with a loved one’s death, and made the most of it.
As a whole, the coven heads had their lives saved and were free. Sure, some of them didn’t appreciate the effort, or saw it as an opportunity to take power for themselves. But things weren’t totally over for them, after all, nor were they for Kikimora.
The Titan saw her child find happiness, saw that a new future for the Titans was guaranteed and they wouldn’t go extinct. He no longer had to worry about Philip bastardizing his name to limit the magic he wanted to teach, and found witches to converse with in Luz, Eda, and Lilith. He may have died, but he freed his name and no longer had to despair over King’s loneliness and sense of abandonment by his father, expressing one precious statement of love. The Titan Trappers who contributed to his species’ demise were defeated by the Collector…
Speaking of, the Collector found happiness and freedom, after the Titan regretted imprisoning them. They learned about real friendship and grew up, not needing to control people, and no longer feeling lied to, with those who were honest. For once, people chose and reached a hand out to them, such as King with Francois, or Luz herself. After millennia totally alone, and then centuries manipulated and lied to by Belos, the Collector was free, and while some innocence was lost, they gained a better understanding of life. People who once feared him gathered to marvel in wonder at the Collector’s magic. They found justice for their lost Titan friends, and facilitated travel between worlds, allowing people to find happiness in the Boiling Isles as they once did.
Katya and Tinella Nosa found freedom; Tinella got to become a famous author, and Katya found other rebels in the BATTs, inspired by Luz’s teachings, and succeeded in undoing the system that hurt her. Now nobody else would have to suffer. Salty got over his own biases and accepted Luz and King as members of his crew. Perry got to see his old friend Eda live, and helped stand up to Belos with his son; Gilbert and Harvey saw their daughter find true happiness, and no longer had to worry about people like Terra Snapdragon hurting kids, as they once were hurt by her.
Severine, Tom, and other Covenscouts were freed from their trauma and allowed to pursue their own paths. Wrath got to be with his son Braxas, who grew up. Jean-Luc reunited with King and succeeded in their purpose of having him nurtured. Demon Hunters and other wild witches like Prim were no longer oppressed.
Endangered species like the Basilisks, the Slitherbeast, and the Selkidomus were saved thanks to Luz’s arrival. The writers imprisoned by Piniet managed to escape and/or enact some revenge, people were spared the deceptions of liars like Adegast, Tibbles, and especially Belos.
Luz brought magic to the human world; Brought Vee and gave Masha and other human misfits a friend. She re-introduced glyphs and palismen, helping people with disabilities, even as the isles unlearned Belos’ puritan mentality, becoming less retributive, and more restorative. Prisons were abolished in favor of hospitals and rehabilitation. People became free to explore magic as they saw fit, not having to fit themselves into categories.
The oppression of the covens was over, everyone could be a wild witch and/or a general weirdo. Nature and endangered species began to replenish, as things were allowed to be wild and no longer harvested or controlled. Blight Industries stopped selling harmful weapons, Palismen returned, and other forms of magic were appreciated as it became less about power, and more learning for its own sake. New opportunities for people, as trauma healed and compassion was spread instead of hurt; Luz helped the isles recover from Belos, and begin returning to what it once was. People were freed of sigils, learned more about the Titans, and so forth.
It wasn’t just that they were allowed to keep living, and weren’t all murdered; People became genuinely happy and self-actualized because of Luz, improving on their previous lives. She undid Belos’ harm, so even if scars lingered, Luz allowed a broken world to be restored and move on from their trauma. Luz ushered in a new era…
But perhaps most importantly? Luz helped herself. She helped herself find other weirdos to be accepted by. She learned to love herself and what she could do, not apologize. Luz became more mindful, kinder around people, even as she grew wiser. Luz gained a powerful agency over her life that allowed her to become a Good Witch like her dreams, while still embracing her own identity. She came to terms with her father’s death, was no longer forced to choose, and was finally understood and loved by many.
Pure Kindness Changes Everything - Skip and Loafer
"You know, Shima-kun. I'm the kind of person who trips up a lot. But that makes me a pro at brushing myself off and jumping back up!"
"Yeah. That's just who you are."
After hearing so much about the anime and the fact that it won the 2023 Magademy Award for Best Picture, I had to finally get in on Misaki Takamatsu's Skip and Loafer. I will say that this is such a psychologically compelling series that reflects the actual mental health of teenagers who are trying to navigate life through adolescence. And more importantly, it's about how life can change for the better when certain people come into your life when you let them.
The story is about a young girl named Mitsumi Iwakura, who has aspirations of being a politician as an adult to help Japan. She's a country girl who moves to Tokyo to attend a well-known high school there. Mitsumi's first day of school starts off in bad fashion as she arrives late due to a lack of exposure to city life, but meets a fellow male classmate named Sousuke Shima along the way. Mitsumi is noted to be a clumsy girl and it immediately shows throughout the first chapter. But underneath her clumsiness lies a heart that doesn't waver and believes in the best of people. The story focuses on Mitsumi's high school tenure and how she begins to leave her mark on her classmates, especially Shima, who becomes her main romantic interest.
The power of Skip and Loafer lies in Mitsumi making her presence for the following people.
Yuzuru Murashige - A very popular and pretty girl who, despite her looks, does not like being around the popular kids. Murashige meets Mitsumi at a karaoke outing. When Mitsumi feels a little overwhelmed from her first actual outing with friends in a city environment, Murashige was there to help her out. Mitsumi's pureheartedness gets to Murashige and she becomes the first real friend of Mitsumi's.
Mika Egashira - The opposite of Murashige in that she tries to be popular in any way possible. She has a lot of insecurities about how she wants to be perceived by people. Egashira starts off as a love rival to Mitsumi for Shima's attention. But over time, Egashira starts to understand why Shima and Mitsumi are perfect for each other. She then becomes a person willing to fight off her fears and support Mitsumi as best she can.
Makoto Kurume - A complete introvert who loves books. She tries to join a extracurricular club to make friends, only to run into Mitsumi and Shima. While afraid of the two at first, Kurume becomes fascinated over how the two can get along despite having very different personalities/interests. She happily becomes Mitsumi's friend after and would later form a close friendship with Murashige despite the latter's extroverted nature.
Tokiko Takamine - A student council member who dreams of being the student council president. She comes off as someone who tries to organize everything to a meticulous degree. However, one situation with Mitsumi causes her to change perspective and realize that it's okay if everything doesn't go according to her plans.
Nao - Mitsumi's aunt and caretaker in Tokyo. She's a transgender woman who has a complicated relationship with Mitsumi's family members. Once in despair when she was growing up as a young man, Nao found herself through Mitsumi's love before moving to the big city to chase her dreams.
Sousuke Shima - The big one. He's a typical handsome boy type who appears calm and confident, but keeps his distance when people get too close to him. However, seeing Mitsumi do her thing makes him realize that she has something that he himself lacks - an ability to move forward from whatever pain comes their way. Hence the attraction begins. Shima also has a complicated past where he feels that he always does what people asked him to do.
What I love and appreciate about Skip and Loafer is how every character's flaws are in full display and how they try to make relationships work despite them. What's even better is Mitsumi's comedic and/or kind timing in ensuring those flaws aren't the end of the world for them. One of my favorite moments in the story is when Shima looks at Mitsumi being excited about school festivals. Mitsumi said she needs to be more collected like Shima, but Shima thinks to his head that Mitsumi is the more collected one and laments his inability to move forward compared to her. Mitsumi then notices that Shima is down and gives him a bunch of senbei crackers to cheer him up.
Teen mental health is considered to be in a bad state. There's so many interventions out there and most have been failures. A big problem is that the therapeutic solutions are all handled by adults who think they know best. They want to help, but don't know how. What's worse is that adults often let teens have much say in how they want to be better when depression and anxiety rear their ugly head.
In Skip and Loafer, while the teens do struggle with whatever is bothering them at times, they are more resilient than adults think. They're smart enough to ask for help. It also helps that the help focuses on their strengths and Mitsumi is a big part of that. Sure, weaknesses are addressed for some characters, but there's a sense of empowerment that's unlocked after beneficial encounters. All the characters rely on one another to better understand themselves and others.
Teens want agency, to face their fears, and help those around them. Skip and Loafer is a journey that highlights this. But the grand message of this manga is that if you're a teenager who's trying to find their place amidst societal standards and are failing at it, change is possible. Maybe you are going through something, but damn it, you deserve more than just coping skills. You deserve to find your strengths and be more than just a victim. Another message the manga provides is the importance of taking things slow to really get the best out of your life at the present moment. Every character in this manga grows in their own way at a slow yet reasonable pace.
I have considered Mitsumi to be someone who's out of the norm due to being born outside of what's in the box. Because of this, she was much-needed change that actually helps. And in mental health care, I think we need non-fictional folks like her to show what great mental health in teenagers should look like.
I absolutely recommend Skip and Loafer for anyone who wants a fun and insightful read on teenage life.
