*Rhetoric as Narrative*
Tumblr media
In this entry, I will examine the critical questions: How does this artifact use narrative elements (scene, character, set up of events, time, etc.) to promote a certain ideology or constitute people in a narrative? What is (ethically) productive and/or limiting about this depiction, and is it more productive or limiting?
In order to do this, I will examine “Their Finest Hour” , a speech made by Churchill shortly after the evacuation from Dunkirk. Winston Churchill uses the narrative elements of characterization, brutal honesty, and foreshadowing, to promote a sense of unity and resilience among British people. This is productive for the people of Great Britain because it portrays the real threats of war and brings the nation together to keep fighting.
Let’s take a look at “Their Finest Hour”, this speech goes back to June 18, 1940. Winston Churchill was addressing the British Parliament in the House of Commons; however, he was also talking to the wider British people and the rest of the world. The speech was broadcasted, and everyone heard what Churchill had to say after a great loss by the Allies. The speech provides a cruel honest assessment of the military situation following the fall of France in World War II. Where he acknowledged how serious the situation was and noted the imminent threat that Germany posed to Great Britain now that France was defeated.
When we take a look at what narrative is, we need to have in mind the concept of forming memory. Narratives are used to describe events, and they have important functions like the creation of a cultural sense. According to Palczewski you can find narratives everywhere in life, and these narratives appeal to form memory. “Narratives form two types of memory: personal and public. They give people a personal sense of who they are as individuals with a history, as well as a public sense of who they are as members of a community that also has history.” (Palczewski, 119). The public memories created by narratives have immense power, especially in the political arena. When narratives come to inform the public life, political views are shaped by the way that the main actors tell stories. People tend to sympathize with the leaders that are able to make their stories appealing for the rest; it can be because of emotional connections, the protrayal of shared values or even a promise of a better future, and that is the way in which narrative plays an essential role when it comes to society. Sonja K. Foss also highlights the significance of narratives, particularly in how they influence decision making. “Narratives are integral to the functioning of institutions such as courts of law, corporations, and government and nonprofit agencies.” (Foss, 333). Narrative is used in strategic ways to make people follow. Whether it’s a government addressing its nation or a family telling a story to their children. On either a larger or small scale, narratives play the role of conveying a story and persuading the audience of its validity or importance. In the case of this entry, Winston Churchill appeals to narrative elements in order to unite the people of Great Britain during WWII.
The first narrative element we’ll be looking at in Churchill’s speech is his use of characterization. He portrays both the British and the Germans with specific attributes to motivate the British public. Churchill’s aim was to emphasize that if Great Britain was to stop Germany’s advances, it was imperative to show a united front. He notes, “I recite them in order to explain why it was we did not have, as we could have had, between twelve and fourteen British divisions fighting in the line in this great battle instead of only three.” (Churchill, 1940). While the British divisions alongside the French allies displayed commendable honor, their numbers were insufficient to stop the German advance. Churchill highlights the idea of unity by invoking words related to national unity and strength. “We have, therefore, in this Island today a very large and powerful military force. This force comprises all our best-trained and our finest troops, including scores of thousands of those who have already measured their quality against the Germans and found themselves at no disadvantage.” There’s a duality in this speech by Churchill in acknowledging the power of the Germans while also boosting the British morale. He presents Germany as a significant threat but he also assures the people of Great Britain their own strength and capability to end this threat.
The second element of narrative we’ll be looking at in this speech is the brutal honesty with which Churchill chooses to address the events that have occurred. He uses honesty in order to accept the big defeat the Allies have just suffered and uses it to inspire the people to come together in order to prevail in the war. Churchill clarifies, “I am not reciting these facts for the purpose of recrimination.” (Churchill, 1940). The strategic approach of presenting harsh truths is not intended to cast blame on the nation. Instead, Churchill uses honesty to inspire collective effort among the people, emphasizing on the idea that to promote improvement and achieve victory, the nation must acknowledge and learn from their losses. Referring to the significant loss in the Great Battle of France where German forces overwhelmed French Army with superior strategy Churchill asserted, “That battle was lost by the unfortunate strategical opening, by the extraordinary and unforeseen power of the armored columns, and by the great preponderance of the German Army in numbers.” (Churchill, 1940). Without being afraid of highlighting the Allies’ defeats and even praising some strategies of the German army, Churchill’s speech merged honesty with a hopeful outlook. Intending to forge resilience, underlining the importance of acceptance and adaptation.
The third and final narrative element to be examined is the use of foreshadowing by Churchill, through which he creates certain scenarios of what can happen in the future and relate them to things that have already occurred in this war. He employs this element to convince people of the necessity of unity and collective resilience in their battle against Germany. “Of this I am quite sure, that if we open a quarrel between the past and the present, we shall find that we have lost the future.” (Churchill, 1940). Churchill not only gives a warning about having internal conflict, but also plants a seed of the future consequences that can happen, suggesting the nation’s unstable situation during the war. He suggests that arguing among ourselves and questioning the current government will inevitably drive them into chaos, splitting the energy and focus from the battle against Germany. “Without this concentrated power we cannot face what lies before us.” Churchill makes a connection between present unity and future success, creating a narrative in which the people’s support and compliance to the government is linked with the nation’s triumph. He foreshadows that collectiveness and unity is a synonym of victory in this battle.
These artifact is productive because if you look at what happened next in history, it did obtain it’s purpose of uniting the British people. It’s hard to argue that a speech done by Winston Churchill is not productive when most of them accomplished what they intended to in a time of war and rigorous battle. The speech painted a certain narrative and psychology among British people that were necessary through the difficulties of war. Churchill’s explicit honesty served as an acknowledgment of the realities of war and at the same time gave a spirit of perseverance across the nation. The ability of the speech to reunite collective efforts and forge a common front in Great Britain shows the productiveness of the artifact by itself. On the other hand, there might be certain elements that make this artifact unproductive. The use of brutal honesty might have been demoralizing to certain segments of the population. Even though a lot of people might have been motivated by the speech, some might have find it discouraging and hard to listen. Another aspect that I consider might be unproductive is the idealization of war, through the speech we read words like heroism; however, it also downplays the suffering and sacrifices a lot of people had to go through.
An interesting way of looking into narrative is by the work done by Gérard Gennete in Discourse Narrative. One concept that I found interesting about this book is the concept of how narrative can manipulate time to create a certain meaning or generate a certain interest. One of the categories that plays a role for this is frequency. Gennete states, “ An event is not only capable of happening, it can also happen again or be repeated: the sun rises everyday.” (Gennete, 113). The relationship between the number of times an events happens in the story and the number of times it is told in the narrative. He also explains the way in which repetitive frequency is used to provide different perspectives or emphasize on the importance of an event. In this case, I believe that the artifact can use repetitive frequency to highlight the importance of the war and how everyone acted, but it also gives different perspectives since it can be told from different points of views in society or nations.
In conclusion, Churchill uses different forms of rhetoric to form one essential narrative for the British people. All of the claims draw into having to be united in order to face what is to come in the battlefield against Germany. Churchill uses characterization to give a sense of what Great Britain needs to be and what Germany represents as a threat to its nation. He uses honesty to acknowledge some of the adversities that the nation has faced and how they need to learn from them in order to triumph. Last but not leaste he foreshadows the things that are to come if British people are not in the same page. All of these narrative elements used by Churchill tie in together to bind unity and resilience in the nation and prepare for battle.

Comments: Happy Valentine’s Day!

For Valentine’s day, Touko’s teachers would often task everyone with making a woven basket. It involves two different coloured pieces of paper, and after some cutting, folding and weaving, all that’s left to do is glue on a handle, made from paper or a ribbon, and voila. You have a heart-shaped basket, its main body a checkered pattern in a diamond shape and different coloured semi circles sticking out either side.
As for what goes in the baskets... well, chocolates. Initially, most children are not bothered with customs, so everyone gets everyone chocolate rather than only girls giving them out.
***
At kindergarten, Ishizaka-sensei brings in chocolate multipacks, and everyone in the class ambles about, dropping a wrapped piece into everyone else’s baskets. Touko’s basket is pink and purple, no blue, thank you, and no one thinks twice about that. When Ishizaka-sensei is distracted, trying to fix someone’s basket, Touko swipes a couple more chocolates from the table. Then she walks over to a table where her friend, Hiroto, is already eating some of his chocolate.
“H-Here, Hiroto-kun, says Touko, holding out her hand. “For... For being my best friend.”
Without a ‘thanks’, he stuffs them into his mouth.
She smiles.
***
The burden of obtaining chocolates falls on students in elementary school. Fortunately for Touko, tomo choco tends to be inexpensive, and in class, Watamoto-sensei has them weave heart baskets. Yet again, Touko’s basket is pink and purple, pinned to the edge of her desk.
Occasionally, a classmate slips cheap chocolate into it. She mouths ‘thank you’s, but nobody lingers, already moving to the next desk, where they gift smiles with their chocolates.
A girl draws up.
“Pink?” the girl scoffs, staring at Touko’s basket. “That’s for girls.”
Then she laughs, drops a chocolate in, and prances off. Touko curls up.
***
“This is kinda fancy for tomo choco,” remarks Hiroto, peering into the woven heart. His eyes flit from the basket to Touko, who stands before him with her hands clasped together.
Only they remain in the shoe locker room, his kendo uniform in his duffel bag.
“It’s not tomo,” Touko starts. He interrupts.
“Aren’t girls supposed to give chocolates? Not boys?”
She winces. Straightens. Trembles. “I am a - ”
“Oi, Hiroto-kun!” calls a club member from the doorway.
Hiroto turns toward them. “Coming!”
He tips the chocolates into his bag and on his way out, tosses the basket into the trash.
***
Touko sits on her bed, her legs crossed. The mattress dips in the middle because the boards broke a few years back and because her heart is very heavy. She sniffles and fiddles with a sheet of newspaper.
His face stares up at her. Hiroto’s. Under a headline of ‘BLOODSTAIN FEVER SHIKOKU VICTIM NAMED’. Touko tears his picture out with her fingers even though she knows where she can find scissors. The newspaper quotes the eulogy she wrote for his funeral. She starts mouthing it off by heart, then breaks down sobbing.
Her bedroom listens but doesn’t provide any comfort.
***
Most students eat in their homeroom, but in Touko’s junior high school, there’s a nook under a stairwell on the east side of the main building that she retreats to. If the library allowed it, she would eat there, but it doesn’t, so she finds refuge here, legs tucked up toward her chest. Beside her sits her tray, indentations for mixed veg, rice and meat.
She opens her paper heart and reaches in. Something brushes against her and she jerks her hand out.
A stinkbug. Miraculously, it’s still alive. Touko watches it fidget on her arm and names it ‘Kameko’.
***
“Hey... Fukawa-san, right?”
She pauses in the hallway and looks around. It’s a boy, her age - she recognises him from a neighbouring class.
“Y-Yes?” she stammers, shoulders hunched.
“I was wondering...” He puts his hands in his pockets and gives a smile, drooping on one side. “... if you’ll see a movie with me next Tuesday?”
Her eyes widen. Tuesday is Valentine’s day. She places a hand over her heart.
“I... w-would love to!” she croaks.
“Cool,” he says, then shrugs. “When you work out the details, let me know, okay?”
Touko nods. He strides off, and she cradles her cheeks.
***
For three days and three nights, Touko trudges through magazines. Sifts through internet forum pages. Advice blogs. Remembers all the books she has read. Touko does all this because a boy asked her out on a date. In the end, she decides on a three movie feature and even watches them beforehand so she’s prepared for the discussion afterwards.
And so, thirteen years old, she goes on her first date, giving him a paper heart with chocolates inside.
Except, during the first movie, he sneaks out.
When she eventually leaves, she sees the heart scrunched up in a trash can.
***
When one of Touko’s mothers finally wrangles out the reason why Touko’s crying in her bed under her duvet that night, she tuts dramatically.
“What did you expect?” she asks, sneering. Touko’s blotchy face quivers. “It’s your fault for falling for such an obvious joke. Honestly, what sort of self-respecting girl would date a boy like you?”
Okay, so Touko changed a few details.
When her mother leaves, Touko opens her satchel and pulls out the crumpled heart basket. She trembles, then tears it into pieces, and she can’t hear its screams over the grating wail screeching in her head.
***
Come high school, Touko applies to an all-girls one across the country, and after getting a diagnosis and agreeing to send payments to her parents on a monthly basis, she enrolls. The Valentine Days spent there are unremarkable, which for Touko, are the best so far. She receives tomo choco and overhears her classmates babble about their plans.
“... we’re seeing a movie,” boasts a girl. Her friends swoon.
As for Touko, she spends that evening stumbling through alleyways, the local grocer’s lifeless face burned into her mind, stinging almost as much as the new tally mark carved into her thigh.
***
While attending Riverbank Girl's High School, Touko receives an offer to join Hope’s Peak Academy for her writing ability, and she enrolls there with the title of ‘Literary Girl’. Normally, she dreads Valentine’s Day, but as it approaches, she anticipates it with an excited quiver in her chest because of the student who sits in front of her in class.
Byakuya Togami.
Everyday, she stares at the back of his head. At first, they clashed. After all, what would he know about hard work? The real world? As a well-off heir, it seemed to her like he had everything he wanted handed to him. He didn’t earn her place, like she did. Didn’t fight to survive, like she did.
This is what she used to think.
During a skiing trip, their teacher paired them up, and she let slip her thoughts. Byakuya glared and weaved a tale of a young heir not expected to be anything. Who outperformed, outsmarted his older siblings in a competition, who were cast into obscurity. Exiled to be nobodies. And she stared at him, shivering, not just because the cold mountain air nipped at her.
“I had to be intelligent. I had to be strong. I had to be perfect. I couldn’t depend on anyone. I couldn’t allow myself to feel fear. I would become prey if I showed any weakness. I was, and am, in absolute control of my emotions.”
His words wrapped around her like a scarf and she started falling in love.
***
“I... I made you this!” Touko says, bent over and holding out a paper heart basket.
The world continues to bumble around the pocket she carved into the courtyard that only Touko and Byakuya are privy to. Outside their bubble, shadowy figures blur as they swim past and sound like they’re talking underwater.
Byakuya glowers at the basket. Even when pulling a disgusted face like that, it’s like the heavens sculpted him from their finest marble.
“Homemade? You needn’t have bothered,” he says, flapping his hand. “I don’t eat cheap stuff... I’ll direct it to my disposal crew.”
She blinks. Goes, “Eh?”
“It’s nothing personal,” he says dismissively, and her grip is so slack she barely feels him pull the heart from between her fingers. “I wouldn’t accept it from anyone. I will have children with women all over the world, handpicked from the elite, and I will marry the mother of the most worthy heir.”
He dismisses himself and strides off with the heart. Touko breathes in shudderingly. The world comes crashing back in, like gales during a storm. Her head dips forward and her shoulders shake, but no one passing by casts more than a cursory glance.
Then she cracks up laughing and throws her head back.
“S-Such honesty...!” she cooes, hugging herself, and a few people stop and stare. “It burns... It burns!”
A wide smile plasters across her face, consuming her, and even though the whole world exists around her, she fixates on Byakuya’s receding silhouette.
***
Last Touko saw the sky, it was as red as a cartoon heart and the blood that dyes the outside world. Now, it exists behind impenetrable steel plates, and her only skies are the black ceiling of her room and the blue paint in the indoor garden.
Touko spots Byakuya in the library. He sits perfectly still. She imagines cobwebs clinging to him like puppet strings.
“Byakuya-sama...” Her small voice carries. Byakuya doesn’t stir. That doesn’t deter her. She approaches. “I... r-remembered you didn’t want homemade chocolates, so before...”
Before this happened. The world ending. Your family being massacred.
“... I bought you these,” she says, holding out a paper heart basket.
She bought the chocolates months ago. When she returned to the school with them, she bumped into some of her female classmates, and after a bombardment of questions, she yielded. They had blinked and thought they were reminding her when they said it wouldn’t be Valentine’s Day for ages.
But, see, these were famous chocolates. Handmade by Ruruka Ando herself, former Super High School Level Confectioner. Touko’s search for Ruruka started a day after Valentine’s Day, and only with Koichi Kizakura’s help did Touko find her, as Ruruka seemed to have been blacklisted after her expulsion.
He accepted payment in the form of some of those chocolates, which Touko saw Jin eating earlier this very day.
Touko breathes. Byakuya doesn’t look up as she sets down the basket onto his desk, nor as she backs out of the room.
***
“BYAKUYA-SAMA!”
Touko’s scream rattles the corridor walls. The windows. Everyone’s teeth. Yasuhiro and Makoto jump. Byakuya simply winces. He keeps his head forward while the other two turn around. They all stop walking, however.
As Touko runs over, her shoes squeak against the polished floor with every step, and she skids to a halt near them in a creamy corridor in Future Foundation’s main headquarters.
Yasuhiro waves. Her smile wanes.
“Here,” she says, like a switch flicked off in her to make her voice dull, and she gives Makoto and Yasuhiro a pouch of cheap chocolate each. She lights up again when she holds out a heart basket for Byakuya.
His arms remain folded over his chest.
“You’re as persistent as threadworms,” he grumbles.
Yasuhiro raises a hand to his mouth, his eyebrows shooting up. “You have threadworms?”
“No, I don’t,” says Byakuya coldly.
“I know a cure for it,” Yasuhiro offers, and he receives a scowl from Byakuya.
“I don’t have threadworms!” Byakuya snaps. He extends a hand, but it’s to push away the basket. “And I don’t want this junk.”
Touko looks down at her feet. Her arms sag to her sides.
“Togami-kun, you’re way too harsh,” says Makoto, frowning.
“I’ll have it!” volunteers Yasuhiro, but when he reaches for it, Touko hisses and he jolts back, yelping.
“Tch, I’ll dispose of it myself,” says Byakuya. He snatches the basket and marches off.
Touko lifts her head and squeals happily, clutching her cheeks.
Makoto and Yasuhiro sigh simultaneously.
***
“... we managed to take back control of the radio tower,” says Touko, at a desk. “No casualties.”
The hotel room buzzes like there’s a fly constantly whizzing about, but really it’s the artificial lighting. It gags into silence only when the switch by the door is flicked off, but the absence of its sound combined with the lack of light always makes Touko’s skin crawl, like she knows a pervert is spying on her, so she keeps the lights on.
Other than herself, only Komaru ever goes into the hotel room, but Touko can’t shake off that feeling. In front of her, on the computer monitor, Byakuya gives a minute nod, regarding her with his chin propped up in his hand.
“Excellent work,” he says. Her face warms. The mask on his doesn’t crack.
“You can depend on me!” she promises. She salutes.
Byakuya continues staring at her.
“I can, can’t I?” he muses in a murmur, then he speaks normally. “Are there any supplies you want us to drop in?”
“A-Actually...” She wrings her hands. “There’s something I have to give to you.”
“Oh?” he lets slip curiously. His brow furrows.
“It’s Valentine’s Day soon,” she tells him, nodding. He shifts in his seat. “I wanted to give you something - ”
Byakuya shushes her by showing her his open palm. She falters.
“This isn’t the time for that,” he says.
That night, in bed, Komaru snoring beside her, Touko replays his words.
‘This isn’t the time’ implies there is one.
***
But, there almost isn’t.
Touko finds out he almost died when he mentions it casually in conversation.
“W-What?” she asks, eyes bulging. She shakes and so badly wants to grab him, like he might disappear at any moment, but he exists in digital form in the hotel room. Instead, she balls her hands into fists so tight her nails will leave glowing crescents.
Byakuya backtracks a little, having been about to move the conversation elsewhere.
“The building collapsed,” he says with a shrug. “Someone accidentally triggered a trap. No one died, thankfully.”
He breathes in, meets her gaze, and flinches.
Her voice fractures on his name. “B-Byakuya-sama...”
Just like that, he could have died. With no chance for her to do anything about it. No chance to say everything she ever wanted to say to him. His lips purse.
“For goodness sake, there’s no need to cry,” he says, but not unkindly. However, his tone doesn’t exactly ooze with comfort. “I’m unkillable.”
Tension continues to seize Touko’s body. He adjusts his glasses. Tilts back his head a little. Glares at her now.
“Also, you know, Naegi’s sister told me how your alter nearly had you go into space chasing that Towa brat,” he reprimands. “I’m the one who should be telling you off. You would have died.”
“But I came back,” Touko retorts. Her vision blurs despite her glasses. “K-Komaru told me... she said she reminded my alter of you, and she gave up and came back down.”
“Gave up?” Byakuya repeats. He shakes his head. “No. I think... that love of yours... gave you and your alter the strength to return. For so long, I thought feelings like that were a weakness... but... it’s a terrifyingly strong emotion, isn’t it?”
Silence, for a beat. Then he drags his voice back out.
“I knew I could trust you for that mission,” he says. “If I thought you would fail, I wouldn’t have risked sending you. Fukawa, I can trust you... for lots of things, can’t I?”
“Eh?” is all she can manage. Shock seals her tear glands.
His eyes flicker. A strange, new expression colours his face. He coughs into his knuckles.
“Well, it seems everything is in order,” he says quickly. “I have a meeting soon so... I’ll talk to you again then, alright? Same time as usual. Bye!”
He hangs up before she can get another word in.
***
Touko, Kyouko, Aoi and Komaru spend almost an entire day in the new Hope’s Peak’s kitchen. Silicon molds allow for mass production of chocolate treats, though it’s debatable whether more chocolate fills the pockets of the molds than that which covers the kitchen worktop surfaces and sits in certain people’s stomachs.
“Let me have just one spoonful!” begs Komaru, draping herself over Touko from behind.
Despite Komaru’s pleas, Touko doesn’t relent. She hunches over her bowl, hugging it to her chest, but no matter how much Touko wills sets of springs to emerge from her spine and propel Komaru off her, none manifest. Instead, Komaru swipes at the bowl again, missing.
“Come on! What if it tastes bad?” says Komaru. “Do you want to take that risk?”
Admittedly, that makes Touko waver. Komaru attempts another grab at it.
“I’m sure it’s fine,” Kyouko remarks nearby, standing beside Aoi, and Komaru pouts.
After Touko writhes some more, Komaru backs off her. Touko huffs and twists her body away from them.
“‘F-Fine?’ It’s better than fine!” scoffs Touko, sticking up her nose. “I can’t give Byakuya-sama subpar chocolate. He deserves only the very best!”
She grits her teeth until they all nod and chorus their agreement.
By evening, their molds are stowed away to cool and set, and everyone present helps clean up. Touko buffs a counter with a cloth, focused on the same spot, and she doesn’t realise that Aoi has wandered over until Aoi suddenly speaks up.
“Are you worried about how Togami’s going to respond?” asks Aoi, and cringes almost immediately. “I mean... he’s not one to mince his words.”
Touko slows her buffing. Stares down at her clouded reflection.
One time, Byakuya told Touko that no matter the distance between them, his feelings for her would not change. Byakuya would not feel a thing. But like the streaks on the surface of the counter, she wonders about the cracks in his. Things he has said that like the marks on the counter, no longer were. Such as, he also said he didn’t value friendship. That emotional bonds were weaknesses. That he would stay with them only until they eliminated despair. Then he would be off, rebuilding the conglomerate.
Yet here they were. Still here. Still together. Like a flower, he bloomed, and she did too.
“I’m not worried,” Touko tells Aoi at the same time as her reflection.
***
“I... I made you this!” Touko says, bent over and holding out a paper heart basket.
The air prickles like an itch on the back of one’s throat begging to be eased with a cough, worsening the longer Byakuya’s living room holds its breath. Byakuya stares down at the basket, woven together with two colours, deep blue and purple. He takes it and rubs it thoughtfully between his fingers.
“I know you said you prefer store bought,” she says, straightening, “b-but...”
Byakuya’s eyes widen and her breath catches in her throat. His lips creak ajar but he doesn’t say anything.
“... I w-wanted to make something for you!” she blurts. Her hands squeeze together. She scrunches her face, but still looks at him. “I wanted to make you honmei choco! B-Because... I... love you!”
This isn’t news to anyone. Byakuya slips a hand into the basket and pulls out one of the chocolates. Specifically, it’s a tofu chocolate truffle in the shape of a heart. Each of the chocolates have been rolled in various powders, so they are raspberry pink, coconut white, cacao brown, or, like the one that nestles between his thumb and forefinger, matcha green. He examines it for a few seconds before popping it into his mouth. She puts a hand over her heart.
The rest of her vision softens, leaving only his face in high definition as he chews. Byakuya swallows.
“It’s delicious,” he declares, and she squeals, grinning. “Actually, it’s good you’re here. I wanted to show you something.”
Touko nods, but she’s too excited to take in what he’s saying yet. He walks to his desk. Opens a drawer. Takes out something flat. Something yellow and blue, like his hair, like his eyes.
She does a double take. Returns to reality. Feels a tremor ripple in her chest. “T-That’s...!”
He shifts the object. It becomes two. Three. No, there were always three, two were just beneath what she saw first. They are woven hearts. Two are the same colours, while one is purple and blue like the one she just gave him. That makes four.
“Those...” Touko steps back. “I t-thought you got rid of those years ago...?”
Yes. Those were all the baskets that she had ever given him.
“One would assume,” he admits. “I found two of these in my locker when we were renovating the school... without the chocolates inside, obviously. I remember I donated the first lot to a local shelter, but since then... I confess I have eaten them.”
For all the times she played this sort of scenario in her imagination, with rosy backgrounds and glittery highlights, when it happens now, her mind screeches to a halt.
“At the time, I didn’t understand why I kept them,” he says. “They’re just pieces of coloured paper woven together. I didn’t even like them. I hated them. The first time, I took the chocolates and left the basket in my locker, intending to dispose of it later, but by the time I came across it again, I decided not to throw it away.”
She presses her fist against her lips. “W-Why?”
Because he loves her. That’s what the voice in her head says. But she has to hear it from him. Byakuya studies the hearts for a little longer, then meets her gaze.
“There were times when my mind would stray to you, so in the end, I kept them until I had an answer as to why,” he replies. “It still happens. In fact, in more recent times, it has been happening more regularly. It can be incredibly annoying.”
He wrinkles his nose. His cheeks flush a delicate pink, but she barely registers it.
“W-What is your answer?” she asks, mind spinning.
Byakuya cocks his head.
“I thought it was customary for the man to respond to a woman’s Valentine on White Day,” he says.
She twitches.
“I... d-don’t mind...” she says, but it means a lot.
He heaves a sigh.
“Well, I suppose I’m already breaking a lot of old Togami traditions, so let’s compromise,” he says. “I will partially answer now.”
Byakuya puts the baskets down, walks over, grabs her shoulders and stoops. His lips press against her forehead. She sets aflame.
“But... the conglomerate...?” she mumbles, beginning to wonder if she’ll wake up, and hooks her fingers against his shirt.
Touko doesn’t wake up.
“Of course, I will still rebuild it,” he says, pulling her closer. “With you, it will be better than it has ever been.”

Briefing (Final Rose AU Snippet)
Note: This is set in the Tifa/Lightning/Fang/Summer AU.
“You know why you are here, right?”
Averia nodded at her mother. “It’s about Elsa, isn’t it?”
“Under normal circumstances, a princess would not be attending Beacon Senior Academy. If she wanted training, she would be receiving it personally from elite tutors while still residing in her home kingdom. Elsa, however, was adamant on receiving a proper education as a huntress, with all that implied.”
“Understood.” Despite being a single word, Averia’s approval was obvious. Elsa did not simply want to be coddled. She wanted to become a proper huntress, and that was worthy of praise in Averia’s eyes. Indeed, she expected nothing less from her friend.
“Of course, she would never have been allowed to attend Beacon Senior Academy in the first place if we had not been willing to make certain… concessions.” Lightning sighed. “Given the prestige her attendance brings, to say nothing of the funding and naval assistance her kingdom has agreed to offer, we agreed to certain requests they made.”
“I assume that is at least partly why she is on my team.”
“Correct,” Lightning said. “We would most likely have placed her on your team regardless due to the personality and power fit, but her parents wanted a guarantee as well as assurance that you would personally see to her safety if necessary.”
“I see.”
“You and Elsa have continued to correspond since we last visited Arendelle. You are, quite possibly, her best friend. There is no one here at this academy that she would trust more than you. You will also be her team leader. I think it’s safe to say that if you give her an order, even one related to her personal safety as a princess, she will obey.”
“And having someone with Saviour in close proximity to their daughter would soothe her parents’ worries, correct?” Averia asked.
Lightning nodded. “Like it or not, our family is the most prominent family of huntresses in the world, and the Semblance we share is one of the most powerful in history, some would say the most powerful. Appearances and power matter. You are widely considered to be my ‘heir’ whatever that might mean, and your power is without question.” Lightning’s lips curved up into a small, proud smile. “I would bet on you to beat any student at Beacon Senior Academy even though you’re only just about to start your first year here. You have access to the second level of Saviour, and the third will not be far. If something wants to hurt Elsa, it will have to get through you, and there are very, very, very few things that can manage that, to say nothing of the support Elsa herself could provide in battle.”
“I would take care of her regardless of what her parents asked,” Averia pointed out. “She is my friend and my teammate. I refuse to let any of them come to unnecessary harm.” It went unspoken of course that trying to prevent them from ever getting injured would only hamper their growth, but Averia would not hesitate to step in if she thought they had bitten off more than they could chew.
“There was some concern they might ask your sister to help with this…”
“Ruby is fifteen,” Averia said bluntly. “I have every confidence in her abilities, but she’ll have enough on her plate leading her own team for the first time.” Like many of the advanced students at the Junior Academy, Averia had already led makeshift teams on missions. Ruby did not have the benefit of so much experience. Averia would not allow her younger sister to be overburdened due to the political machinations of others. “It wouldn’t be fair to ask her to do this. She also doesn’t know Elsa as well as I do.”
“Indeed.” Lightning nodded. “Those were my exact thoughts. Your sister is talented, but she is still very young. I would like to hold her back until she’s seventeen, but…”
“Your analysis concluded it was better to let her proceed.”
“Yes.” Lightning nodded. “It did. As for Anna, Elsa’s younger sister, she would also like to attend Beacon Senior Academy…”
“Diana, right?”
“Yes. She fits Diana’s team well, they get along, and Diana has more than enough power to ensure her safety. Anything that can get through Diana would have no trouble getting through any other team we put her on.”
“Politics is aggravating,” Averia remarked.
“Yes, it is, but it is part of the world we live in.”
“I assume Ruby will be getting Weiss Schnee then.”
Lightning nodded. “Correct. The Schnees are an extremely powerful and influential family, and Weiss has incredible potential. They all but demanded we put her on your team, but Ozpin put his foot down. He didn’t want to have two VIPs on the same team. When they found out, the Schnee pushed to have her on Ruby’s team. Refusing would have been seen as an incredible insult given our family’s prominence and Ruby’s status as a prodigy.”
“Then give her Yang as well,” Averia replied. “Weiss appears to be an ideal support type with some room to grow into a highly capable of melee type and a devastating ranged attacker. What they need is some who can draw enemy attention and keep it. Yang would be ideal, and she and Ruby already like and trust each other.” It went unspoken that Yang was one of the people that met Averia’s exacting standards when it came to her younger siblings. Yang could be trusted to protect Ruby if necessary and support her position as team leader. She would also tease Ruby mercilessly, but Ruby would survive. Probably.
“I’ve already put her on Ruby’s team,” Lightning said. “For those exact reasons.”
“Dare I ask who the fourth member will be?”
“Blake Belladonna.”
“Of Menagerie?” Averia raised one eyebrow. “Isn’t she a princess?”
“Technically, no. Her parents rule Menagerie, but they haven’t styled themselves as royalty. However, Blake is very, very good. After the… downfall of the White Fang, her parents took steps to develop their own, highly skilled armed forces whose loyalty and honour they could trust. Blake has been training with them for years. She is already at an advanced level in terms of her combat abilities, even for Beacon Senior Academy.”
Averia almost rolled her eyes at the mention of the ‘downfall’ of the White Fang. They’d had the audacity to bomb one of her Tifa Mom’s establishments went it was undergoing construction back when Averia had been only a few years old. Her parents had responded by attacking the White Fang directly. The campaign had been short, bloody, and decisive. Dropping Ragnarok through the roof of the White Fang’s last stronghold had brought an end to the White Fang and prompted Menagerie to develop its own, professional armed forces instead of relying on zealots and extremists.
“What do the simulations say?”
“Your Aunt Vanille and Diana have run the numbers. Blake is the best fit out of the remaining students. It was either going to be her or Jahne.”
“Give me Jahne,” Averia said. “Ruby’s too nice to deal with her all the time.”
Lightning laughed. “That’s probably true, and Elsa could use some practice dealing with someone like Jahne. At least she isn’t quite as bad as Jihl.”
Averia’s sighed. “Yes, there is that.” In all honesty, she liked Jahne, but then again, she also found all of Diana’s plotting and scheming adorable. There was probably something wrong with her, now that she thought about it. “Is there anything else I should know about?”
“Keep an eye on Team JNPR.”
“Oh?”
“It’s one of Ozpin’s projects,” Lightning said. “The leader, Jaune, is an interesting case.”
“And by interesting?”
“Frankly, he shouldn’t be here if we look solely at his grades and transcripts, most of which are fraudulent. However, Ozpin has pinpointed him as a person of great potential, and Yeul has peered into the future. She concurs it would be advantageous to allow him to remain. However, he may need assistance from time to time.”
Averia nodded. “I’ll keep an eye on it.”
“He has Pyrrha Nikos on his team, so he should survive without too much difficulty simply due to her prowess. She is not someone who would allow her teammates to come to harm. However, he will need help when it comes to leadership, strategy, and tactics. If he approaches you, at least hear him out.”
“Then I hope he is a hard worker,” Averia replied. “Because if I’m going to help him, I won’t do it in half measures.”
“I would expect nothing less.” Lightning glanced back at her notes. “One last thing…”
“Oh?”
“Try to keep your schedule flexible. Atlas has some… work they need done, and either you or I will likely be the ones to do it. Given my current schedule…”
“Of course,” Averia nodded. “Will I be working with one of their specialists then?”
“Your point of contact will likely be Winter Schnee.” Lightning smiled faintly. “Don’t worry. She’s one of James’s finest which means she may be a stickler for protocol, but she is also going to be highly competent.”
“I see.” Averia nodded again. “Then I suppose I should get going. Aunt Vanille and Diana are running another ‘killer robot apocalypse’ simulation, and they want me to examine the safety protocols they have to identify points of inefficiency.”
“You know, they could simply stop building killer robots if they want to avoid accidentally causing a killer robot apocalypse.”
“They could,” Averia replied. “But we both know they won’t.”

Yi Yi (2000) by Edward Yang: We are all born alone and we die that way too
Tumblr media
Taiwanese-Japanese film Yi Yi directed by Edward Yang is widely regarded as one of the finest films of the XX century and the best film made by the Taiwanese directors. It was the final feature-length film directed by Edward Yang who would pass the rest years of his life fighting with health issues. Yi Yi had won him an award of the Best Director at 2000 Cannes Film Festival. This film summarizes all the achievements and experience of Edward Yang. The visual style can be compared with his older feature Taipei Story and A Brighter Summer Day, while the way of storytelling resembles the finest pieces of the Japanese Golden Age of cinema.
In a magical Yasujiro Ozu-way, Edward Yang paints a family portrait which contains many different layers of life to be shown during enchanting almost three-hour runtime. The sketches of Jian family struggles and tribulations are told in connection of different generations and they let the viewers live the lives along with the characters, not just observe it. Yi Yi creates a broad space with an impressive cohesiveness of characters’ stories and emotions. The story is very gentle, clever, and deep, yet it is delivered in a simple slow-paced way.
Tumblr media
The plot of the films structures around the most important family events - a birth, wedding, and funeral. It concerns the love stories of protagonists, their search for reasons to live the life and work, little tragedies, disappointments, confessions, changes. The number of subplots is impressively high, though all the parts of the Jian family's story remain coherent, convincing and profound. Edward Yang in this film decides to talk about nothing but the life of an unremarkable middle-class family with their trials, and this task is very difficult to execute. Yang has proved to be a master making it very entertaining and thought-provoking, from the first moment till the very end.
The first important layer of the story shown a gap between generations in the context of a grandmother’s stroke and subsequent comatose. The family members taking care of her are advised to speak with grandmother while she is in a coma, in order to help her regain consciousness. Some of them are not even able to speak, while the other realize during their monologues their life is so empty that they’ve got nothing to say but twaddle. Characters find out during these talks the life is not really going anywhere as they live blank being unsure about anything. They love the grandmother but they have been always lacking real emotional connections with her. Moreover, it appears even the bonds between father and wife and kids are also quite formal, not so sensible. The older daughter of Jian family approx. 14-tears old Ting-Ting (portrayed by Kelly Lee) seems to be the one who is close to the grandmother.
Tumblr media
Ting-Ting is one of three main characters whose perspectives on the narrative are being depicted. We see her relationships with the family, a close friend and troubled childish boyfriend. At some point, Edward Yang crosses the love stories of Ting-Ting and her father NJ (Wu Nien-jen) who met his first love after 30 years from their separation. The way a girl and boy hold their hands applied on the same way NJ and his former love Sherry used to do. The scenes are identical, as well as hotel scenes were both couples were involved in within 30 years of time difference. Ting-Ting is shown as she is already following the same path of her parents, and the similarity of their paths is inevitable. The rehearsal of this motif is very important in Yi Yi: in the end, the young son Yang-Yang (Jonathan Chang) feels like he is taking a place of grandmother, and Ting-Ting gets a feeling of mother’s Min-Min (Elaine Kin) tribulations who struggles to get through the middle-age crisis.
Tumblr media
The patriarch NJ also experiences the middle-age crisis learning he has lost hopes for his own life to get changed. This is the time for him to reconsider relationships with the family members and the first love he suddenly encounters for the first time since they broke up at school. He also doesn’t feel right about the business he is involved in. NJ is shown as a man of honesty and good manners, and there is no room for such qualities in a large business. The life seems pointless, as he’s been doing this business he is not meant for throughout his life. Surprisingly, he becomes close to the Japanese software mogul Ota (Issey Ogata) who understands his feelings and helps him to regain the sense of the meaning of life. A mysterious Japanese happens to be an open-minded type talking about his poor childhood and tremendous changes his life had gone through. He insists that every day and week of life brings something new, but he remains a rare person to think so. His ideas are tantalizing and attractive, but very few people can share this approach. NJ can hardly follow him as well.
Tumblr media
The third perspective is the story shown from the eyes of NJ’s son Yang-Yang who attends elementary school. Edward Yang in a sublime and gentle way shows the relationships of Yang-Yang with classmates, first feelings for the older girl, troubles with the teacher and first own interests a kid develops willing to become a photographer. He clicks pictures of people’s back of the neck as they are not able to see what is behind them. So Yang-Yang helps them his way. His artistic approach doesn’t find an approval, though. A child has just started to live and he slowly learns the simple things about the world. However, he is already shown with a touch of sorrow and loneliness as neither parents nor classmates seem to be close to him.
Tumblr media
All the perspectives of the characters cross brilliantly and fill the space of Taipei with curious scenes of family life with their sublime and piercing emptiness at the same time. There is always a gap between generations, but all the characters will follow the more or less same path which is inevitable. The characters’ names such as Ting-Ting, Min-Min or Yang-Yang resemble the film’s title Yi Yi. It is literally translated from Chinese as “One and One” is used to show the oblique way of looking at the events of life. In order to demonstrate the ambiguity, the director often films the characters in an inventive way placing the camera behind the glass and filming them sitting and talking somewhere from outside. There are several scenes where the camera is far on the other side of the glass, yet we hear characters speaking in the café or room. The point of ambiguity is that everybody lives their own lives, yet we all experience the same things. In the end, life would be nothing, but disappointment, as the stories of protagonists tell. Even the kids are already on the way to end up like their parents. The parents had comprehended it and they already know for sure, we all born alone and we die that way too.
Tumblr media
What is the difference between the generations in Yi Yi? In fact, the differences are just in the age, innocence, and expectations the children still possess. The crossing scenes and subplots show how similar people are. Nothing new is going to happen in the lives of these kids. The parents have already gone this way seeking harmony and had come in terms with the pace of life after failing. Yi and Yi, children and parents like one and one – we see them on the same track to learn life is quite meaningless.
Tumblr media
Three-hour Taiwanese family drama concerns many more motifs, protagonists, subplots and stories. It would take a long to describe the stories of NJ’s brother marriage or his affair with Sherry or family drama of Ting-Ting’s neighbour and friend. It reminds of Ozu’s Tokyo Story with numerous wonderful things and drastically important features the viewers immerse into and slowly comprehends. Yi Yi is an encyclopedia of life with many dimensions and fantastically elaborate attention to the details and littlest things.
Tumblr media
Yi Y by Edward Yang is a visual delight with fantastic photography and the innovative camera work. The style of the film is catchy and exhilarating. However, the style delights are only employed to complement the philosophy of the story. This is the whole world depicted on a sophisticated canvas of Edward Yang. It can be certainly interpreted in different ways, as there are both beautiful, touching moments of Jian’s family life and a feeling of inevitable despair as the people are meant to live the same lives by the fact of their birth.
Yi Yi is the most significant and acclaimed film of Edward Yang summarizing his filmmaking career. The cinematography of Wei-han Peng and brilliant performance of actors, as well as complicated and sublime story make Yi Yi one of the greatest ever produced by the Taiwanese filmmakers.

Surprise Party (Part 2) (Dadzawa)
The first half was too long so I’m splitting it up to make it more readable. Dw though, I’ve already started on the second act.
Tumblr media
“Goooood morning, you listeners!” Mic grinned, beginning the class with a large flourish of his hands, “Are you ready for another great lesson with one of the best teachers in this school?!”
“Yes, Sir,” the class droned, their monotone tone making the pro frown for just a moment before he repeated himself.
“I can’t hear you! Where’s that excitement?”
The class repeated their affirmation once more, this time with feeling.
“Great! Now. Hopefully, you read-” his voice droned on and on, the students, for the most part, listening to what he had to say, though Sato was busy writing out recipes based off of coffee on his notepad, pretending to take notes during the lesson.
Momo looked at the clock, wondering just when it would be appropriate for them to visit the nurse. It shouldn’t be during any of their classes, as they should never put off their school work for anything. However, this was a special occasion that was right around the corner, and they needed to get the information by tomorrow.
“Hey, Mr. Yamada?” Sato called out, bringing Momo back to reality and away from her introspective thoughts, “Can I head to the nurse?”
“Didn’t I tell you kids, to call me by my hero name?” Mic tsked, placing a hand on his hip as he looked the kid up and down, “Why do you need to go to the nurse anyway?”
“Insulin.” Sato blurted, that being the first thing to come to mind. Besides, with all the sugar he eats for his quirk, it wasn’t too out of the ordinary to hear that someone like him needed a booster for his blood glucose intake.
“A-Ah, can I go as well, Mic sensei?” Momo then asked, standing this time to get a little more attention off of Sato and the questioning look Mic was giving him.
Mic seemed suspicious at the rest, tilting his head to the side ever so slightly, “Let me guess, for ‘insulin’?”
“No...” Momo murmured, racking her brain for something that Mic wouldn’t dare question. Something that he’d just have to accept and at the very least, allow her to visit Recovery Girl. “It’s...you know...”
“?” A confused noise escaped him, the flustered look on his student’s face both making Mic equally concerned and suspicious.
“Female problems?”
“OH.” He deadpanned, heating a little as that certainly was an unexpected answer, Jirou coming to the rescue as she stood up as well.
“I really think you should let them both go Mic sensei, it’s very important.” She pushed, her eyes wide as she tried her best to convey in nonverbal terms to her teacher of the two student’s true intent.
That clicked in his mind, Mic coughing into his fist as he gestured at the door, “Alright, hurry up you too! Any missed instruction is on you two to make up, got it?”
The two nodded, giving a small bow to their instructor and thanking him before rushing out the door together and down the hall, hoping to catch Recovery Girl without anyone else in the nurse’s office.
Bakugou tsked at the sight, shaking his head as he continued taking his notes, a small mumble under his breath, “Amateurs.”
Heading down to the lower floors, Momo and Sato both stood in the elevator, breathing a sigh of relief.
“I’m so sorry,” Momo cried, taking it a little too hard, “I’m not very good at lying. And to make such an inappropriate excuse as well-”
“Hey,” Sato smiled, giving her a clap on the back, “We did well. We got out of class and Jirou even helped. Just focus on the end goal. Alright?”
“Yes,” Momo breathed, taking in long deep breaths and releasing them just as slowly, her heartbeat slowing, “I’m calm. I can do this. We can do this. Let’s just try not to bump into anyone-.”
The doors to the elevator swung open, accompanied with a ding. In front of them stood Aizawa Shouta himself, seeming displeased to see his students out of class.
“What are you two doing here?” he asked, sliding into the elevator with his students and following their descent.
“We were headed to the nurse’s office,” Momo explained, shifting over in the elevator, so she was side by side with Sato who decided to let her do most of the talking.
“Hmm.” Eraser hummed, side-eyeing his two students before focusing his gaze straight ahead.
The two didn’t dare relax, in case their minute, small movements tipped off their teacher in some way. Though, in reality, Aizawa was far too tired to care about why they were headed to the nurse’s office just as long as they got whatever treatment they needed.
Once his level dinged, the man left without another word, the two let out a sigh of relief once the doors shut and the elevator continued to descend.
“That was too close,” Momo sighed, clutching her chest as Sato nodded in agreement. The two exiting the elevator and turning left and down the hall to go to the nurse’s office.
Upon entering, Recovery Girl sat alone at her desk, snacking on the very sweets she often offered to her patients. Hearing the door slide open brought her attention to the two class 1-A students who shuffled in, checking around for anyone else who could be lurking about.
“Now what are you two doing here? Last I remember, you children have English.” Recovery Girl mused, turning her office chair so she could let herself down. “And English isn’t a very dangerous subject matter.”
“We got permission from Mic sensei to come here,” Sato explained, hoping that Recovery Girl would be sympathetic to their cause, “We were hoping to talk to you about Aizawa’s birthday.”
“Oh? Am I invited to some special party?” She mused, using her large syringe looking cane to hobble over to the two children. “Are you two planning a little celebration for Shouta?”
“Yes, ma’am.” Momo nodded, giving the elderly lady a brilliant smile, “Our entire class is trying to put together a surprise party. We wanted to check if Aizawa was allergic to anything so we can keep his allergies in mind when preparing the cake and food.”
Recovery Girl nodded, understanding just why the two was here now, “I’m sorry. I can’t help you.”
Well, darn it.
“However,” she started, “Even if I can’t just give you his medical files or tell you about the specific allergies he could have. I can assure you that he can eat just about anything you children choose to make.”
“So he’s not allergic to anything?” Momo pressed, wanting more clarification just in case they were misunderstanding what she just told them.
“I’m afraid I’m not at liberty to confirm or deny that sweetie. The man deserves the privacy given to your medical files as well as Sato’s. But I don’t think you need to worry too much.”
So it was a yes. Just in the most indirect way possible.
“Thank you, ma’am. Hopefully, you can make it to the celebration next week.”
Recovery Girl smiled at the thought, not really being the type to party anymore with her old age and frail body holding her back. But for the sake of a coworker and these sweet children? Why not? “Of course dear, I just need to make sure that the office is all locked up after school.”
“Oh, but you’ve gotta keep it a secret,” Sato reminded, pressing a small finger to his lips to accentuate his point. “We don’t want to let Aizawa know.”
To that, the elderly lady nodded, using the butt of her syringe cane to begin pushing the two out of the room, “Alright, alright. Your little secret is safe with me. Just head back to class now, you don’t want to miss out on instruction.”
And before the two could thank the elderly lady for her cooperation, the door shut behind them, and the nurse was back to her paperwork and sweets.
“Well, that’s that.” Momo laughed, relieved that everything was going according to plan as the two headed towards the elevator side by side.
Sato nodded, already thinking up of possible recipes that he could put together. Like a black cherry forest cake. Or perhaps his teacher would like something coffee based? Maybe he could even skip the cake and make cupcakes instead, with a multitude of flavors so everyone could find what they like!
“Um...Sato?” Momo started, still keeping in mind why the two were paired up in the first place. “We’re friends, right?”
“Uh,” Rikido drawled, trying to figure out where this was going. Jeez, girls were kinda complicated, weren’t they? “Why do you ask?”
The door opened, allowing both to slide into the elevator together and ascend to their floor.
“We were paired up by Iida because this also serves as a team building exercise, remember?” Momo explained, her eyes a little distant as her heart and mind conversed with one another.
“Yeah, I guess we don’t talk too much outside of class.” the larger student replied, leaning against the elevator as his leg bounced against the flooring.
“Well,” Momo began, turning to face her partner before giving him a small bow, “I know this might be overstepping things, but I really do view you as a friend Sato. I want to believe that I can be friends and am friends with almost everyone in our class.”
“Almost?” Sato questioned, taken aback by her brutal honesty and enthusiasm.
“I...I’m afraid to say that I can not condone nor stand Mineta’s commentary.” She shyly explained, knowing that while the child himself was crude on the outside, it wasn’t right for her to judge him by his perverse outer shell.
That got Sato laughing, the pro-hero-in-training clutching his stomach to as he recovered from his fit of laughter, which incidentally got Momo giggling too.
“Don’t worry,” he reassured, “Mineta isn’t really popular with any of the girls in class anyway. Your secret’s safe with me.”
Momo, who had covered her mouth during her little fit of giggles pulled it back to her side. The silence between them no longer stagnant and professional, but a welcoming one that held merriment in the air. “Perhaps after this, we could work together to prepare something for everyone? I have the finest tea and sweets being imported soon, and I would be honored if you could bake something for everyone!”
“That’s a really sweet idea,” Sato grinned, meaning every word in his corny pun, “Count me in, you did owe me a tea party anyway- after the dorm competition~.”
“Oh! I’d nearly forgotten,” Momo exclaimed, eyes widening as she recalled having wanted more chiffon cake during one of her tea parties with the girls. The doors swinging open just in time as the two exited together and returned to the classroom just in time for Mic to begin wrapping up his lesson.
Lunchtime marked the perfect time for Midoriya and Ojirou to get into action, needing to locate Shinsou first before anything could be discussed.
Midoriya and Ojirou walked past tables and tables of students, Midoirya taking the left side of the cafeteria while Ojirou took the right- both students scanning the crowd as they walked from one end of the cafeteria to the other.
“Hey! Class 1-A!” A shrill voice called at them, both of the boys being cool-headed enough to ignore Monoma’s heckling as they walked past the class 1-B table just in time to hear the sharp smack of Kendo’s fist.
“Hmm, here’s not here...” Midoriya muttered, sampling a bit of his katsudon as they came at a halt at the end of the cafeteria, hugging against the wall to allow other students to pass.
“Welp, guess we can’t ask him for anything,” Ojirou shrugged, ready to head off and sit down to his usual friend group, but the green-haired boy tugged the sleeve of his classmate’s gi.
“I know you might still resent Shinsou for controlling your body during the sports festival,” Deku murmured, knowing it best to keep his voice low and soft when talking about such delicate matters, “but we’re doing this for Mr. Aizawa. Just keep that in mind, okay?”
The blonde didn’t say a word, the base of his tail lowering itself, signaling his soured mood while the rest was still slung over his shoulder for storage and hazard safety. A change that would be unnoticed by the untrained eye, but not from one as observant as Izuku.
“Well,” Izuku started, running through the facts in his head, “I know for a fact that Mr. Aizawa trails Shinsou all the time. So he’s probably training now right?”
“Would Aizawa even pull Shinsou from lunch for training?” Ojirou asked, the two then shared a brief look before shaking their heads in unison.
Of course, he would.
“Let’s go to the nearest training room then,” Midoriya suggested, heading out a pair of double doors along the wall that let students back into the hallways as Ojirou followed, eating his lunch as carefully as he could.
The two exited the main building and followed a pathway that leads them to the only training room that had one of the doors held ajar, possibly to indicate to Shinsou that his mentor was waiting for him.
The two carefully opened the door, Ojirou using his tail to allow for both of them to enter without sacrificing their lunch trays before carefully closing it and moving into the large open area of the gym.
Sat on the edge of the gym and against the far side of the wall was Shinsou, eating his lunch while Aizawa rested in a yellow sleeping bag beside him, obviously still awake by the occasional nods he would give to his student who made conversation with him.
Also in the sleeping bag was Eri, who only allowed her head to poke out as she napped, probably haven eaten her food earlier than the rest of the students at UA. The sight itself of a father, daughter, and almost-adopted son bringing a smile to Midoriya’s face.
Ojirou was now was Izuku’s side, giving the shorter boy a nod to let Deku take the lead in this one. Midoriya exchanging the nod as he reached out and knocked against the side of the wall, Aizawa creaking one eyelid open while Shinsou looked over with slight confusion and shock. Interruptions during training were few and far in between with Eri consisting of most of them after all.
“Uh, Mr. Aizawa?” Deku asked, raising his voice so the two could hear him from the distance they were at, “We need to talk to Shinsou for a second.”
“Do it here,” Aizawa grunted, not too suspicious about the two suddenly appearing as he knew full well of the relationship between Shinsou and Ojirou. If Midoriya wanted to play mediator, then go ahead.
“In private, sir,” Ojirou clarified, steely-eyed as his dark black eyes locked onto Shinsou’s rather dead looking ones. “I think I need to speak to him alone.”
Aizawa sighed, knowing that this would mean more work from him, unzipping his sleeping back before cradling Eri in his arms and moving past his two students and towards the exit, “Make it fast, he’ll be training after he’s done with his food.”
“Yes, sir!” Midoriya and Mashirao both called out, straightening their posture and bowing at their teacher in thanks as he passed by before allowing their forms to relax.
“Am I in trouble?” Shinsou mused, a small smile on his face as the two boys approached him, the purple-haired boy making no move to sit up.
“No no no no!” Midoriya stammered, clearly not wanting anything to escalate, especially if the two needed Shinsou’s help with the party. “We just needed to ask you for something, that’s all!”
“Huh?” Shinsou deadpanned, clearly not understanding what the heck Deku was getting at, “And what do you two want?”
“Advice, maybe even a helping hand,” Midoriya began, sliding down against the wall, so he sat next to the purple-haired boy, Ojirou hesitating for a moment before sliding against the wall on the other side of Shinsou.
“That doesn’t give me anything to work with,” Shinsou sighed, taking another mouthful of his lunch, his attention returned to his meal since he figured the two would elaborate their request eventually.
“Aizawa’s birthday is coming up soon,” Ojirou started, drumming his fingers against his tray as he ate his meal, “And we’re throwing him a surprise party.”
“We need as much insight into him as we can,” Midoriya explained, gesturing over to the door, where Aizawa was probably hanging outside, “So...?”
“He’s professional,” Shinsou shrugged, rubbing his eyes as he bit back a small yawn, “He’s not the one for small talk when we train.”
“Well, anything at this point could help,” Deku offered, hoping that Shinsou was able to pick up on anything from his mentor during their time training together.
He paused for a moment, closing his eyes before speaking, “He does like cats. He feeds the strays with Eri...and sometimes, me.”
That earned a smile from the two boys that flanked him, finding the fact to be pretty humanizing for both their instructor and Shinsou Hitoshi.
Ojirou coughed into his hand, avoid Shinsou’s gaze as he asked, “Anything else?”
Shinsou’s smile turned a bit sad, knowing full well that if Ojirou were to look him in the eyes, all he’d see are all his classmates in middle school again. The fear, distrust, whatever one would call it.
“He’s always drinking the same fruit or protein pouch when I eat my lunch. Doesn’t seem to care for making his lunch,” Shinsou offered, taking another bite from his lunch, “He told me that it’s best to keep things efficient, both in and out of the field.”
Deku hummed, keeping a mental note of all the information they were collecting on their teacher, Ojirou happy to let him take the lead so he could eat.
Shinsou prattled on for a bit about his mentor and Eri, the little one a gateway into Aizawa’s life if the pair were to interview anyone next.
Once he finished giving the two all the information he had, the purple-haired boy relaxed, eyes drifting up towards the ceiling as he let out a slow breath. “So, is this all for a present you guys are putting together?”
“A surprise party, actually,” Midoriya clarified, sparing a small glance at the door just to check if Aizawa was anywhere near it.
“Surprise party, huh?” Shinsou repeated, more to himself than anything. Ignoring the nod that he got from Deku, the general studies student. “Beats my plan.”
That got Deku’s attention, the student becoming visibly excited as any ideas were great ones, “What pl-”
Ojirou watched with shock as Deku stopped mid-sentence, halting his movements as his eyes dulled under the influence of Shinsou’s quirk.
The blonde bit his tongue to not say a word, ready to wack his classmate and friend over the head so he could shake out of Shinsou’s grip, but the stoic boy raised a hand to stop him, not bothering to look at Ojirou as he continued, eyes locking onto Midoriya’s.
“You still trust me, it’s a little endearing, if anything,” he admitted, flashing Deku a small, sly grin just as he released his quirk’s hold onto the green-haired wonder who blinked and blinked again. “I lied. Wasn’t planning on getting Mr. Aizawa anything, he doesn’t really seem the type to like anything fanciful though. So if you guys are planning some gifts, keep it in mind.”
Midoriya, being used to the casual use of Shinsou’s quirk on his bodice, brushed it off before nodding, “Alright, thanks a lot Shinsou, every bit of information helps! You could have given me a small warning though, about the quirk use I mean.”
“Where’s the fun in that,” Hitoshi rhetorically asked, moving to stand as well, his lunch finished along with the two others in the room.
“See you at the party?” Midoriya asked over his shoulder, already leading the way out of the gym, Ojirou behind him. Both in a hurry to not keep their teacher waiting too long.
“We’ll see,” Hitoshi replied, deciding to put his capture weapon to some use as he threw it, watching it wrap around Ojirou’s torso before pulling him back.
The two boys stopped, Ojirou turning around to say something before stopping himself just in time to remember who they were dealing with.
“You can continue moving on, Deku,” Shinsou reassured, his close proximity allowing him to lightly brush off Ojirou’s shoulder, as if to apologize for any rough treatment, hands moving to undo the bindings around Ojirou’s body. “We just need another minute.”
Complying with his wishes, Midoriya just shot Ojirou a thumbs up and a nervous, reassuring smile before fleeing out the door and past a resting Aizawa who sat under the shade provided by the building, his daughter in his arms.
“So,” Shinsou started, hoping to make some sort of light conversation, “Ojirou, was it? Mashirao Ojirou.”
Silence.
“I see you don’t trust me, is it because of the trick I played with Midoriya?”
Silence once more.
“Alright,” Shinsou sighed, placing his hands up in mock surrender, “I swear I won’t use my quirk on you. Just...answer me this one question.”
That caught Ojirou’s attention, his tail falling from his shoulder and flattening away from his body.
“You still resent me for the sports festival?”
Ojirou’s form deflated a little, figuring that it was a little too obvious, with how he behaved around Shinsou and the whole “dropping out of the competition” thing. “Yes, but no.”
Shinsou raised an eyebrow but remained silent, letting Ojirou speak for himself if he wanted to, or simply leave.
“I...I understand why you did what you did.” Ojirou sighed, finally making eye contact with Shinsou for the first time. “You did your best to get as far as you could on your own. To prove yourself.”
“Only way to get into the hero program.”
“For general study students,” Ojirou agreed, nodding his head as he crossed his arms across his chest, leaning his weight onto one leg, “I didn’t earn that ranking. Everyone else in the class with all their flashy quirks worked hard to get to where they were that day. Everyone but me.”
Shinsou furrowed his brow, both understanding why Ojirou felt that way, but not why this had anything to do with him.
“Compared to everyone else, I’m...normal. My quirk can only take me so far, and it’s much less versatile then Bakugou’s quirk or Todoroki’s quirk. It’s so much less versatile than your quirk.”
That definitely caught Shinsou’s attention, eyes widening as he straightened his posture. This definitely wasn’t going anywhere he was expecting.
“There’s only so much room in the hero program- you even said it yourself. And I’ve failed once-”
“Hey,” Shinsou cut off, racking his head for the right words to say, not to manipulate a response, but the words to reassure some stranger he barely knows. “I’m not going to replace you. Your own teacher isn’t mentoring me to do anything like that. Besides, even if I did use you during the sports festival. Your dignity speaks for itself.”
Ojirou smiled, feeling a bit more secure about himself, oddly enough. Though the small irrational fear that he just isn’t enough for the hero program still lingered.
“Everything alright between us?” Shinsou asked, wanting to make sure he knew where the two stood before he let Ojirou catch up with his friend.
“We’ve cleared the air, but we aren’t friends.”
“...”
“Don’t get me wrong, I’m sure you’re a very nice person,” Ojirou reassured, shooting a soft smile at Shinsou to exemplify his point further, “But we still don’t know each other too well..”
“Fair,” Shinsou nodded, giving the blonde a small pat on the shoulder, “Let’s check in again once I join the hero program and beat you in training, deal?”
That earned a laugh from Ojirou, the tension in the air now gone as the two accepted each other as friendly rivals, Ojirou offering a hand that Shinsou took without a second thought.
“Deal.”

º◦·✧·◦º  ┊  kj apa,  he /  him  &  cismale  ┊  damn,  look  at  archibald  andrews  this  year !  i  heard  he’s  seventeen and  has  lived  on  the  northside  for  seventeen  years.  also,  his  favorite  milkshake  flavor  is  black  &  white  with  whipped  cream,  chocolate  chips  &  two  straws,  just  in  case  you  wanna  get  in  with  him.  a  free  dessert  goes  a  long  way !
hi  !!  ok so.  ya’ll KNOW arch,  so instead of going on about him,  i’m just gonna throw in some shit to help a lil w my portrayal  !  winks  .  finger guns  .  enjoy the ride children  .  (  ps  .  plot w me pls  )
post  ! arrest leaves a sad,  vulnerable,  sleep deprived archie.  he’s  SCARED,  in all honesty,,,  scared of what’s to come next,  scared to keep people around  ‘cause he knows he’ll drag them down with him.  he knows the arrest was only the beginning  &  he has no fuckin clue on how to make it stop.  it’s safe to say he’s feeling waves of  PARANOIA  &  ANXIETY,  but he’ll supress it literally as much as he can.  he’s getting back into writing music,  tho,  so hopefully that helps  ?
like i said,  archie is  HELLA  sleep deprived these days.  he’s kept up late w pressing thoughts  /  stress  / anxiety  / paranoia,  &  will literally just sit in bed until he either decides to run it out,  or talk to betty ab it  (  if her light’s on,  ofc  !  )  in this verse,  it’s not odd to find the boy w deep bags under his eyes  /  literally just drifting off in school.  sad.
he broke up with ronnie via the notion that he needs to step back as far away as possible from the lodges.  he still loves /  cares about her so much  &  wants to support her  /  be friends,  but it’s a scary time for him.  he needs to disaffiliate w lodge industries,  &  get back to his roots ! he’ll focus on being her  friend,  &  honestly,  that’s what they  both  need right now.
speaking of roots,  archie has been spending  A  LOT  of time w betty  !  they’re next door neighbors  /  best friends,  so naturally,  he’s going to her with a lot of his fears.  when he can’t sleep at night  ???  he calls her.  when he's tryin not to be alone  ???  he calls her.  various other issues  ??  u guessed it.  all her.  she’s become his literal  girl friday,  &  it’s inevitably making him think about her a ton  ??  while he’s at it,  he’s been pondering their kiss,  &  is allowing himself to recognize the immense feelings he’s had for her.  even tho he  KNOWS  he’ll never be good enough for her,  he’s finally willing to let himself  try  to be.  he doesn’t want to hurt her again,  though,  so he’ll walk on egg shells until she’s ready  !
miscellaneous fun facts  /  late night musings
obviously he’s primarily riverdale based, but as an avid reader of the comics,  i’m inclined to throw some of his personality from those in as well  !  this means arch is  ?  i guess more so in touch w his emotions  ?  like,,,  he  is  in the show,  but in the comics it’s just.  deeper.  i dunno.  he’s an emotional lil boy.  fav comic moment is when he tried to call himself an  albatross  but accidentally said albacore.  tragic.  :(
there’s no single,  widely accepted star sign for him,  so i’ve decided to make my archie a  pisces  !  seeing as i myself am one  &  a lot of the charas i draw inspo from are  (  ie.  ron weasley  ),  i only feel like it’s fitting.  defense:  arch is extremely sensitive  /  emotional.  he has a huge heart,  he’s the ~creative~ type,  he’s idealistic,  loyal,  patient,  genuine  &  hella romantic.  &  finally  ??  the 1985 birthday issue for archie states that his birthday’s is in march  !
in his earlier high school days i think he focuses his relationships a lot on lust rather than love  (  grundy,  val  &  even ronnie to an extent  ).  he’s v quick to say i love you  &  a lot of his relationships are v sexually based.  i think as he grows up tho he’s kinda realizing the importance of like  ? love  > lust.  this does not in the slightest invalidate his relationships  ( besides grundy bc that shit is fucked up.  he was so manipulated  &  it was mentally awful for him.  gross.  ),  i think it’s just the fine line of Who He Was  vs  Who He’s Becoming.  maturity at it’s finest,  my dudes.
archie andrews is an  INCREDIBLY  physical guy  !!  meaning he’s  gonna  hold your hand,  put an arm around you,  hug you,  etc  ...  it’s just a show of him caring  !
while post arrest has him scared  &  trying to back off everything  ...  it’s only a matter of time before arch starts plotting to take down hiram with the rest of the gang.  he just  ... needs some time.  betty needs time.  veronica needs time.  &  jug  ?  he’s  kinda  got his hands full w the serpents,  so  ...  we’ll table that,  for now  ! (  aka:  i’ll explore this more when we finally get a hiram !!  )

Series Finale
Another release from the patreon vault: My rarely-publicly-published Au of Mystery and Shadow, my “good end” AU--this is a special piece I wrote for Jet to commemorate her finishing the anime! almost 3,00 words.
Mina put the pizzas down on the ottoman, placing some paper plates next to it. “Domino’s finest!” She walked toward the kitchen. “Hey buddy, you need a beer?”
“Love one.” Haruka called from the couch, tucking her legs under the soft blanket. “Thanks. Kimi did NOT want to go down tonight, I’m not sure what her deal was.”
“Well, you know how children are,” Michiru set down her glass and passed the champagne bottle over to Haruka, “they have a miraculous sense of whenever their parents would like to do something.”  Haruka twisted the bottle open and passed it back to her. “Thank you, my love. Rei?” She carefully poured into the glass set on the end table, “May I offer you a glass?”
“I’m taken care of.” She patted the box of Franzia next to her.
“Of course you are, I’m foolish to have asked.” Michiru tossed her hair, her voice teasing, and settled in next to Haruka on the couch.
There was a time when Rei would have blushed, and tried to imitate Michiru’s fineness, but, as it was, she grinned. “Just pass me some of those breadsticks.”
Haruka tossed the box over to her as Mina reentered the room, beers in hand. She handed one off to Haruka and plopped in the oversized beanbag next to Rei.
“I’m fascinated to see their take on this. I haven’t been watching since the turned me into an Usagi knockoff. Blonde isn’t a personality type, people.” She took a chug. “Also, why the fuck did we all have a crush on your gay ass?” She shook her head at Haruka. “Also, we were young, not idiots, I think Usagi was the only one who mistook you for a dude at first. And for like, 20 minutes tops.”
Haruka draped her arm around Michiru, who snuggled into her shoulder. “So you did watch the third season.”
“Just enough to see what they did with you. Heartthrob my ass.”
Michiru gave a careless shrug. “I never watched any of it. I never imagined it would tell the story fairly. Though,” she smiled up at Haruka, “it is true that your handsomeness is without measure.”
“AT LEAST THEY DIDN’T MAKE YOU STRAIGHT.” Rei shouted across the room.
Mina rolled her eyes. “Speaking of incapacitatingly homosexual…”
Michiru put a finger to her lips. “My children are sleeping.”
Rei reiterated in a harsh stage whisper. “At least they didn’t make you straight.”
Mina drew her arm around Rei. “Honey, you are not the only one this happened to. Like...maybe all of us. Except those two.”
“Me! With men!”
“Well you know what they say, “ she smiled, “Men are from Mars--”
“No men are not from Mars no men on Mars ever Mars hates men Mars is women’s space only Mars--”
“Rei.” Michiru called over to her. “We’re all very aware of the...she weakly waved her hand in the air, “lack of historicity involved in this production.”
“Mina, did you see the cathedral episode? They had Usagi trying to convince me not to shoot myself.” Haruka chuckled.
“Oh, did you punch her in her fucking face like you did me, or is that not a magical friendship moment?” Mina shot back.
“Oh, like you didn’t punch me in the face as soon as I got better. And no.”
“You had it coming, buddy.”
“I really did.”
“Ladies.” Michiru steeled her voice just a hair. “If we don’t start catching up, we’ll miss the finale, you know.”
Rei pressed play.
__
“THAT’S NOT WHAT HAPPENED.” Rei sat bolt-upright, which was an impressive feat in a beanbag, such was the quality of her rage.
Mina chuckled. “I didn’t really think they were gonna use my parting words of ‘earn it, assholes’ on a kid’s show.” She took a drink of her beer. “Usagi literally did cry this much though.”
Rei ignored hend continued her rant. “Where’s the battle we had with Galaxia? Where’s Mina crossing swords with her?”
Mina rolled her eyes. “Where’s my sword at all, is the real question here.”
“WE DIDN’T JUST JUMP IN FRONT OF THE FUCKING STARLIGHTS.” Rei was practically out of the beanbag now, near levitating with anger. “We fought to protect everyone, Galaxia STRUGGLED WITH US.”
“I hardly think they would be willing to express the brutality of what actually happened in a children's cartoon, Rei.” Michiru tried to reassure her. “If they even know. We are a fiction, a story, to everyone in this world except ourselves, and so they may bend it however they like, without worry of being ahistorical. I assure you, it isn’t personal.”
“Also,” Mina playfully kissed her cheek. “Shut the fuck up. You get a loving exit, I get to say,” she affected a high and mocking voice. “I have to protect important people!” she fell back into her normal range. “What kind of shitpot strategy was that? I KNOW how I fight, why would I trust it to people who’ve clearly lost before? The whole thing makes no sense.”
Rei seethed. “That’s not how it happened.”
“I was about that shocked?” Haruka tried, helpfully. “Being dissolved hurt about that bad?”
Rei looked down at her large watch. “I think I lasted longer than that.”
“That’s what they all say.” MIna playfully poked at Rei.
Rei’s face twisted up in a scowl. “That’s not what I meant, Mina!”
MIna lay on top of her. “Oh, I know that.”
“Hey!” But she laughed playfully. “Mina, I can’t see the TV.”
“Oh, you can hardly see the TV anyway, and it’s just the long legged senshi disco.” She straddled Rei. ‘I, GALAXIA, WILL GIVE YOU A GREATER CHALLENGE.” They tussled on the beanbag in their teasing, loving way.
“Ruka,” Michiru brushed back Haruka’s hair. “Are you going to be all right?”
Haruka looked at her softly.  “Yeah, I’m fine, Michi, why?”
“The next episode treads into...tender territory for you, I know.”
“Oh.” Her face fell a bit. “I forgot.” She took a deep breath. “I mean, I made peace with it, we did what we did because we thought we had to. We did have to, I guess. I don’t know. I tried my best. It was all I could think of.” She snuggled in a little closer to Michiru. “I asked for forgiveness. She forgave me, I think, somehow.” She gave a weak laugh. “I guess.”
“You don’t have to watch, Haruka.”
“I know. I’m okay.”
__
Even Rei was quiet. She wanted to argue about the unfairness of the four of them getting some kind of battle, of their struggle being made known while hers was hidden and made into another person’s moment, and yet, watching Haruka and Michiru look quietly at the screen, while the girl was meant to be Hotaru (They called her Chiyoko, and her hair was too long, but that was the least of everyone’s problems.) faded away, without a word.
Rei had not been there, and so she did not know except by rumor, but it couldn’t have been like this, a perfect emotionally convenient peace. Hotaru had been confused, and hurt, and angry, and she had continued to be so for many, many, years.
Haruka and Michiru held each other quietly, bearing witness to the terrible honesty of what they had done. Of course that was the part they got right.
Children had a gift for many things, and timing would always be chief among them, as the girls heard the small patter of a child heading down the stairs.
“Mama? Papa?” MA crept into the living room. “Can I have some juice?”
She looked so little there, standing in the light of the foyer, the light behind her casting a shadow across her face. Michiru and Haruka sat still for a moment, trapped in the space between their past and their present, where demons, however captured, still called from the basement.
Michiru was the first to move, noting her daughter’s confused expression. “Sweetheart, we don’t often have juice after we go to bed, you know.” She walked toward her, extending her hand, “But I’m certain we can find something acceptable to both of us, can’t we?”
“Uh huh.” She nodded and took Michiru’s hand in hers, as they walked toward the kitchen together.
It was only when they disappeared from the kitchen that Haruka seemed to regain herself, and wiped at her face for a moment before pulling over her chair and following them into the kitchen.
“I think a cheese stick and a glass of water is an excellent compromise, my darling.” Michiru was knelt at MA’s level. “Much less sugar and twice as delicious.” She handed MA a cheese stick. “Now, let’s go back up to bed. I’ll tuck you back in.”
They turned, and nearly ran into Haruka, who reached out and stroked MA’s hair sadly.
“You know Papa would never, ever kill you, right, honeybee?”
MA looked up into Haruka’s tear-filled eyes, confused. “Yes?” Her tone suggested she had never considered something otherwise until Haruka had asked the question. Her eyes became her mother’s for a moment as she patterned out Haruka’s emotions. “Papa are you okay?”
Haruka nodded and tried to collect herself. “The show we’re watching made me sad. It’s okay.”
“Like when Mufasa dies.” MA nodded sagely.
“Like when Mufasa dies.”
She reached out and patted Haruka’s knee reassuringly. “It’s just a story, Papa.”
“I know.” Haruka leaned forward and gathered MA into her lap, hugging her tightly.  “When you’re older sometimes it’s hard to tell the difference.” She kissed the top of her head. “I’m sorry, baby, you go on to bed.”
She slid off Haruka’s lap and took Michiru’s hand to go upstairs, Michiru reassuringly running her hand over Haruka’s shoulders as she passed.
Haruka wheeled back into the living room and sighed heavily, letting herself coast toward the couch. She paused for a moment, lost in her own thoughts, trying to pick them apart the way she’d been taught in therapy, trying to give herself the love and forgiveness she afforded Michiru.
She felt a gentle rub on her back and looked up to see Mina standing by her side. “Your kid definitely has your sense of the dramatic moment, Haruka.”
Haruka gave a chuckle. “I guess she does.” She closed her eyes and took a deep, slow breath in, and slowly let it out. “I’m doing alright.” She nodded. “I’m not the worst thing I’ve ever done.” She set the brake on her chair and transferred herself to the couch, flopping back on it dramatically.
There was a beat. “Buddy, that’s not the worst thing you’ve ever done. Remember when you bought that pink and yellow sweater?”
Haruka laughed.
__
The sound of her hand connecting with Usagi’s cheek rang across the den as Michiru poured herself a cocktail in the dining room.
“You slapped Usagi?” Rei’s eyes were fierce, even with their slight cloudiness.
Haruka held her hands up in the air. ‘Ten years ago! To save the world!”
Mina took a drink of her beer. “Should have said they made it up. You’re in for it now.”
Haruka held out her hands to Rei, as if to appease her. “I didn’t know how else to make her believe it! It wasn’t my first choice, Rei!”
She set down her glass of wine. “You slapped Usagi! I AM GONNA BEAT YOUR ASS.”
Haruka pointed aggressively to the screen. “LOOK I’M BEATING UP SEIYA NOW LET’S WATCH THAT IT’S GRE--”
Whether it was the irritation of her misrepresentation, the fact that Haruka had slapped Usagi ten years ago, the idea that it even had to get that far, the bottle of wine in her stomach, or all four things, Rei Hino was no longer having any of Haruka’s excuses, and voiced her disapproval of past Haruka’s choices being presently animated on the TV screen by leaping on top of her and reaching for her neck.
Haruka held her tight in a hug, her arms pinned to her sides. “You know I, um, I have a lot more upper body strength than you? I literally spend my whole day--OW!” She jumped as Rei dug her teeth in Haruka’s shoulder. “GODDAMN!”
Rei whirled like a crocodile and dumped them both onto the floor, Haruka still holding her close.
“Rei, it's not really winning if you beat up a cripple.”  Mina called over her shoulder.
“MINA YOU’RE NOT HELPING.” Haruka struggled to keep Rei pinned against her.
“Wasn’t trying to.”
“REI IT WAS TEN YEARS AGO.” Haruka tried to flip Rei onto her back, but she sprang off her back foot and fell back on top off Haruka.
“YOU’VE NEVER BEEN HELD RESPONSIBLE.”
Michiru strolled back into the living room, drink in hand. “If either of you wake the children, you’ll be responsible for lulling them back to sleep, I hope you know.”
“Michiru, help!” Haruka struggled against Rei.
Michiru sat at the end of the couch. “Is there not some statute of limitations in play, given that Haruka did die for the cause, after it all, and also given that she still bears the scars of her devotion to her princess.”
“No!” Rei growled, still squirming.
“Well, I tried.” She sipped her cocktail.
“MICHIRU.” Haruka looked at her, wide-eyed.
Rei went limp in her grasp, suddenly. “Okay. You win. I give up. You’re right, this is childish.”
“Thank you.” Haruka released her and relaxed against the hardwood.
She was taking a cleansing breath when there was a sharp smack across her face. “OW! Fuck, Rei.”
“I WAS ONLY PRETENDING YOU SHOULD KNOW THAT WELL.” She stood up, hands on her hips, satisfied.
Haruka closed her eyes and laid back on the floor. “I’m too old for this.”
Rei marched back over to the beanbag and sat next to Mina. “Justice is finally served.”
Mina nodded. “Good job, fireball, you sure showed animated Haruka.”
Michiru set down her cocktail. “Haruka, do you need some assistance?”
“Naw.” She rolled onto her side. “I got it.” Her eyes caught the TV screen, where she and Michiru lay fading from life, and she gave a soft frown. She had heard you couldn’t remember pain, not really, but there was something about watching it happen in front of her, more graceful than she remembered it being, less like a thousand tiny pieces of her blinking and dying each second, the pin-prick holes in her body flowing with pain.
Michiru sat next to her, and slipped her hand into Haruka’s. Their eyes met, expressing what might have been a hundred comforting words.
At least, it might have been if Rei hadn’t have checked her watch and immediately started screaming about how Michiru and Haruka got more time to die than she did and this was ridiculous and unfair and unnecessary.
__
“Did any of this even happen? Asking for a friend.” Mina snacked on a last bite of cold pizza, Rei’s head on her shoulder, drunkenly half-snoozing.
Haruka stretched back against the arm of the couch. “I don’t know, we were all dead at the time.”
“Lucky us, this is garbage.” She shook her head. “This is how Galaxia should have destroyed planets, if I have to listen to these nerds whine about their goddamn planet one more time I’ll kill myself, Galaxia doesn’t even have to do anything.”
“I feel kinda bad for them, is that weird?”
Michiru’s eyebrow raised. “I know you and Seiya have made peace after all these years, but yes, I say that comes as a shock.”
“Don’t get me wrong,” Haruka motioned toward the pizza and looked at Mina pitifully, who edged the box toward her, trying not to disturb Rei. “I think they were still whiny and annoying and pathetic.” Michiru leaned forward and handed her the pizza box, which she accepted gratefully. “But I mean...they had some more going on than Seiya’s crush on Usagi. I don’t remember it being like...everything?”
Michiru smiled and teasingly ruffled Haruka’s hair. “Perhaps because mainly you spent your time concerned she had a crush on me.”
Mina extended her hand to the TV in disbelief. “Oh, we just had to tell Sailor Moon to believe in herself, why didn’t I think of that! Classic tactical mistake.”
Rei stirred. “What’d I miss?”
“Fucking nothing, let me tell you what.”
__
A commercial for potato chips was on-screen, happily singing about crunching and flavor.
Mina sat up from her beanbag nest. “I can’t believe it’s been ten fucking years. And eight since, you know,” she gestured broadly to the three of them, “everyone but me got hurt.” There was a small note of guilt and hurt in her voice, the way there always was when she spoke of it, and Rei touched her shoulder lovingly.
“Usagi didn’t get hurt. Because of you. So, we did what we were supposed to.” Her voice took on that tender tone it rarely took on in public, the one that reassured Mina in the dark.
Mina nodded half heartedly. “I guess.” Rei kissed Mina softly, and drew her close.
“Rei. Mina.” Michiru motioned to them. “Come sit over here, with us.”
They looked at each other, and smiled, linking arms as they made their way over to the couch.
“C’mon.” Haruka scooted herself over as much as she could. “We started this together, and we’ll finish it together.”
They shared a look as the commercial began to dim, the colors fading from the screen, a sense of possibility and memory filling the room, the people they were and could have been like ghosts.
“Are you ready?” Haruka asked no one in particular.
“Ready.” Mina nodded.
The four of them snuggled together on the couch, and heard the music come up for the last time.

God created real estate, and He developed it as a good investment. We've seen the world latch on to the idea of real estate investing, especially in recent years. But because Christians, we can't back down from something God believed is good just because the world has latched onto it. With regards to the story of the talents in Luke 19, Fin expects us to make a good return on His ventures, and you can do that in real estate. This entire series will depend on Multiple Streams of Income, with real estate being the three main asset classes you should invest in. But sometimes within real estate itself, there are ways to diversify your property account through various property types, locations, and buying/selling practices. Later, we'll look at the many ways you can diversify your realty, even through various commercial property types, but prior to we do, let's look at some of the reasons why real estate has become the best investments you can make...

Proof of a right wing conspiracy the Clinton Chronicles
The next scandal or conspiracy I will be focusing on in this text post is “The Clinton Chronicles,” is a 1994 film that accused the Clintons of a range of crimes. In order to understand this scandal there are some people you need to know.
1. The infamous Larry Nichols. This is the same man who was involved in my last post and who helped orchestrate the Gennifer Flowers scandal. While Nichols apologized and admitted his wrongdoings in the Flowers scandal, he never quite got rid of his need for revenge and as soon as new opportunities came up for revenge, he went after them. Quick reminder Nichols had bad blood with Bill since he was fired from his job working at the ADFA. 2. Pat Matrisciana was the producer of the film: The Clinton Chronicles. He was also the founder of the conservative group Citizens for Honest Government. (this group will come into play later on in this post.) 3. Reverend Jerry Falwell. He was was an American Southern Baptist pastor, televangelist, and conservative activist. He also owned Falwell’s liberty alliance which helped produce shows and videos. Falwell was basically the caricature of what a bigoted right wing extremist christian would be like. Here are some of his quotes: “The idea that religion and politics don't mix was invented by the Devil to keep Christians from running their own country.”       “ AIDS is not just God's punishment for homosexuals; it is God's punishment for the society that tolerates homosexuals.”
Facts and background information: 1. The Citizens for Honest Government was registered with the IRS under section 501 (c) (3) of the tax code as a nonprofit educational organization, theoretically non-partisan, tax-exempt and free to solicit tax-deductible charitable contributions. In practice, the organization had two main purposes: to propagate the political and religious beliefs of the extreme religious right, with which its founder and sole proprietor Pat Matrisciana was closely allied; and to promote and distribute video tapes by Jeremiah Films and Integrity Films, two for-profit corporate entities he (Mastrisciana) owned. 2. Until 1993, Jeremiah Films produced slick melodramatic videos on themes mainly of interest to Christian fundamentalists. To give you a gist of how paranoid and crazy these films and documentaries were here are some examples:                                                                                                                                       Halloween, Trick or Treat? warned parents that lurking behind such “seemingly innocent symbolism” as black cats and jack-o’-lanterns lay a satanic plot to seduce their children into “Pagan Occultism.” There was also a film produced by this company called Gay Rights, Special Rights where the film focused on “the hidden purpose of civil rights laws forbidding discrimination by sexual presence:to enable homosexuals to procreate in public classrooms where they recruit and propagandize the innocent.”
Now that you know what what type of paranoid and extremist people that were involved in this, let’s get on with The Clinton Chronicles Scandal and how all these men came to know each other and work on this.
1. Matrisciana and Nichols were introduced in late 1993 by a former NBC News cameraman named John Hillyer who had been hired by Matrisciana to scout Arkansas for anti-Clinton material. 2. Before The Clinton Chronicles, Matrisciana and Nichols’s first joint venture was a thirty-minute video called Circle of Power. Distributed nationwide by Falwell’s Liberty Alliance (this is how Reverend Jerry Falwell who was introduced at the start of the post becomes involved,) in early 1994, the video opens with Nichols earnestly telling of “countless people who mysteriously died” after running afoul of Clinton’s political ambition. Taking Vince  Foster’s death as a starting point, Circle of Power, tied President Clinton to a series of suicides, accidental deaths, and unsolved homicides.
The Clinton Chronicles: Facts: 1.The Clinton Chronicles was the second more ambitious production of these three men that reached the widest audience after it was released that Spring. 2. The largest volume of fabrications in The Clinton Chronicles concerned the ADFA (where Larry Nichols had worked and had been fired from.) 3. Falwell promoted The Clinton Chronicles as if it were The Ten Commandments. For four successful weeks in May 1994, viewers of Virginia evangelist’s syndicated TV program, The Old-Time Gospel Hour, saw not sermons and spirituals but excerpts from Circle Of Power and The Clinton Chronicles, along with a half-hour informercial touting the videos for a donation of $40 plus $3 shipping and handling. A few of the more than two hundred TV stations that carried Falwell’s program deemed the episodes political rather than religious and refused to broadcast them without payment, but most showed them on schedule.
Now this part is hilarious: Toward the end of the thirty-minute infomercial, Falwell interviewed a figure in silhouette, identified only as an “investigative reporter.” “Can you please tell me and the American people why you think that your life and the lives of the others on this video are in danger?” Falwell asked. “Two weeks ago we had an interview with a man who was an insider,” the dark figure replies. “His plane crashed and he was killed an hour before the interview. You may say this is just a coincidence, but there was another fellow that we were going to interview and he was killed in a plane crash. Are these coincidences? I don’t think so.”  The silhouette’s voice was recognized by investigative reporter Murray Wass, who finally got Pat Matrisciana to admit he was the mystery man. “Obviously, I’m not an investigative reporter,” Matrisciana confessed, “and I doubt that our lives were actually ever in any real danger. That was Jerry’s (Falwell’s) idea to do that… He thought that would be dramatic.”
False claims and faults In the Clinton Chronicles: 1. Although the video came advertised as a documentary, many who appeared in it got paid. Citizens for Honest Government ledgers show that the organization paid out more than $200,000 to individuals featured in the Clinton videos between 1994 and 1996. Nichols repeatedly claimed to have received no money but was in fact paid $89,000 according to the ledgers. Jim Johnson (enemy of Bill’s from Arkansas I posted about him here) received a new pickup truck, while Paula Jones and her husband received a paltry of $1,000 for their appearance in The Clinton Chronicles.         “We did not pay people to tell lies,” Martisciana told Salon magazine reporter Murray Wass. “We paid people so that they would no longer have to be afraid to tell the truth.” (lol faulty logic at it’s finest am I right ladies?)
2. Veteran reporter Carrier Rengers drew the assignment of reviewing The Clinton Chronicles for the resolutely Republican Arkansas Democratic-Gazette. “Apparently,” she commented tartly, “honesty isn’t necessary in videos.” She painstakingly debunked its most absurd assertions. Had then Governor Clinton really failed to balance Arkansas’s state budget even once? In fact, he had done so every year because state law forbids deficit spending. Had he, as the video alleged, issued a full pardon to a political supporter named Dan Lasater who was convicted of giving cocaine to his aquaninstences? Impossible, because Lasater had pleaded guilty to a federal crime.
Other things you should know: 1. Another Arkansan who joined with the Citizens for Honest Government was a former Saline County deputy sheriff named John Brown. Over a two year period between 1994 and 1995, Pat Martisciana paid the ex-homicide detective $28,000 for “investigative work,” on anti-Clinton videos and Brown appeared in two of them. He took the money, but soon came to take a jaundiced view of Matrisciana’s operation. Later on Brown, regretted his involvement with Martisciana. Although he had appeared on The New Clinton Chronicles (a revised but basically the same as the first edition version) and a second video titled Obstruction Of Justice, he contends that his remarks were scripted, electronically, altered and placed in a context that entirely changed their meaning. Moreover he says the same is true of virtually all the law enforcement officers who appear on Martisciana’s videos.                                                                                                                                                                                                    “If they’d had been halfway honest,” Brown explained to a Little Rock reporter, “they’d have called themselves Citizens against Democrats. Basically, they just wanted to play a game of connect the dots. Except that every picture had to show Bill Clinton’s face. They’d take somebody like Dan Lasater or even Roger Clinton, and find a way to tie everything they’d done wrong to Bill Clinton.”
    2. One possible explanation for Nichols’s erratic behavior and persistence of revenge towards Bill Clinton was his own addiction to the painkiller Dilaudid . By the time of the Clinton Chronicles, Nichols was gobbling pills buy the handful and staggering around in a daze much of the time. Dilaudid is a Schedule II narcotic with potentially fatal side effects, including suppressed respiration, mode disturbances, and impaired judgment.
Conclusion: The Clinton Chronicles was not based on fact but rather each of the men using the film to get back at the Clintons and further their agenda. Nichols still wanted revenge and Martisciana wanted money as well as revenge. Falwell wanted to use the film to further his political and religious agenda at the same time by going against the Clintons new age new democrat Liberal politics and portraying it as a sin.
Honorable mentions: 1. In a strange incident, Brown insisted he saw Nichols demonstrate his toughness by emerging from the bathroom having run an electric guitar cord through his scrotum. “That was it for me,” Brown exclaimed. “I got up in his face and told him if he ever came around me pilled up like that again, I would kick his ass and turn him in.” From that point forward, the former detective’s relationship with the Citizens for Honest Government deteriorated rapidly.” 2. On Monday, October 31, Jerry Falwell spoke before a Baptist preacher’s gathering in Little Rock. Originally scheduled to be held at Immanuel Baptist Church, where the President had worshiped during his years as governor, Falwell’s appearance had to be moved after Pastor Rex Horne refused to allow his church to be used for the event. Having watched The Old-Time Gospel Hour on cable tv, Horne felt that Falwell had blatantly violated the Ninth commandment by bearing false witness. “I happened to tune in on a Sunday morning,” he explained. “I saw Falwell promoting the video tapes that have been proven to be scurrilous and full of innuendo and falsehoods directed not just at the Clintons but other Arkansans. I could not, with good conscience , go along with it any longer. 3. Gary Johnson was in the Clinton Chronicles
