when you get home your email is flooded with warnings from other parents at your daughter's daycare about a lice scare?? okay, you think, she's definitely not going on monday, you can just bring her to work with you, right? what's the worst that could happen?

the following monday he just happens to show up at the office (He can't just stop by to say hi to his brother who he loves?) (tim calls security almost immediately)

you're not at your cubicle (in a meeting, your desk neighbor informs him) so he mills about the floor like a lost puppy just waiting for you to show up so he can "accidentally" run into you

the woman at the front desk has a chair pulled up next to hers where this little girl with pigtails is sitting, trying to console her as tears stream down her face

jason springs into action, kneeling in front of her chair to ask what's wrong

she just sniffles and holds up her stuffed animal, an elephant whose button eye has popped out, the woman watching her trying to get her to hand it over so she can sew it back on but she wont let go

he goes full grey's anatomy, fussing over the toy like it's in mortal peril and complimenting her for being so brave before gently asking if he can try to fix it

she lets him take it and he uses the woman's travel sewing kit to stitch it back on

she's ecstatic, leaping forward into his arms to give him a big hug

but now she won't let him leave because no he has to have a conversation with the elephant first and introduce himself and give it post-surgery care instructions and listen to it talk about how much she it wants a puppy and he feels like such an idiot talking to that thing but anything to make this little girl smile

she pulls a little picture book from the backpack hung on the back of her chair and asks him to read with her and he can't just say no!

so he plops down on the tile floor and starts reading out loud and even though she's standing next to him craning her neck to see the pictures he's a head taller than her

when you finish your meeting and head back to the front desk to thank gretchen for watching your kid the sight you see makes your heart absolutely melt

jason and your daughter are sitting criss-cross applesauce on the floor of Wayne Enterprises as he reads to her, and he's pulling out all the stops, he's doing voices, sound effects, and she's giggling so hard she can't sit up straight

but then they both finally notice you

"mommy!" she yells, running to you and wrapping herself around your leg

you're surprised to see him, but definitely not disappointed, and if what you just walked in on indicated anything, it was that you wanted, nay, needed this man

so now you're flushed and hopeful, mind running with possibilities of why he's here; could it be? he couldn't stop thinking about you either? he came all the way to ask you out?

but jason is also surprised, astounded even, by the miniature carbon copy clinging to your leg saying something about scooby snacks

he's freaking out on the inside

through a tight-lipped greeting he excuses himself with what he hopes is a neutral demeanor (spoiler alert: it's not) and goes home to think

and you obviously know exactly what that was about, one doesn't go through pregnancy at 19 without becoming well-acquainted with the whole catalogue of surprised/judgy reactions

of course you're a mess because the early/mid 20s dating scene is hard enough as it is but with a toddler? forget it, might as well just give up now

you go home to call your best friend and get drunk over face time while she assures you that men aint shit and offers to put a curse on him (you consider it, but how are you supposed to get a lock of his hair?)

he's up all night hating himself for being such an asshole and trying to come up with a scenario in which this works, in which he can have you in his life and also a child and be the red hood because he can't stop thinking about you

so then he just says fuck it and the next morning he shows up at your office with flowers and a puppy stuffed animal and finally asks you out

Anti-Grammys Rant

I'm so done with the Grammys. 2024 had such great albums and who do they give AOTY to? The album people have heard only one song (that Texas song) off. I get it no one's heard New Blue Sun or Djesse Vol 4 either.

But the other nominations?

TTPD, HMHAS, Brat, Short N' Sweet, Midwest Princess, they all deserve it so, so much.

If they wanted to go after numbers, there it is. TTPD. Fastest album to hit 1 billion streams in 6 days. Most streamed album of 2024.

Impact? Brat. 2024 summer will always be remembered as Brat Summer. It was a phenomenon.

Speaking of phenomenon, femininomenon. Midwest Princess had so many bops. Hot To Go, Pink Pony Club, Supernova, and more.

Short n' Sweet already got best pop vocal so I can understand why they didn't give it aoty but Espresso and Please Please Please? How can either win no awards?

HMHAS had overall the best lyrics, production, vocals, and everything, and the way Billie was robbed was just unbelievable. All 5 albums deserved AOTY.

What reasons did they have to give Beyoncé the awards? Except for, of course, Jay-Z paying for the award. The Academy is literally just feeding into the 'Thank You Beyoncé' rumours.

This has nothing to do with Beyoncé being the first black woman to win AOTY since 1999, I'm not being racist, I'm not white. It's about how unfair the Academy is.

Taylor was the most streamed artist on Apple Music and Spotify. She released a double album in between a record-breaking tour, and the audacity to give her no award for it? Bffr.

Who listens to Beyoncé except for her handful millennial fans? I have not heard any songs of Cowboy Carter except for the Texas song, and that too, on social media.

But at least all the other nominees won a Grammy, I'm so sorry for Billie and Taylor because I feel like HMHAS and TTPD were the best albums of 2024 for real.

what a weird year for me. new year ramblings under the cut.

i started 2024 off depressed and anxious. i'm ending the year depressed and anxious but now i've seen dan and phil and taylor swift.

but in all seriousness. this year was probably the most meaningful of my life so far, the year that i will look back on as the start of my "real life". i'm proud of what i've done.

in january i was just putting one foot in front of the other. i was severely overworked. i was on call at a busy hospital so my sleep was shocking. the shift work killed me and i would come home and just sit on my phone in my bedroom, lights off and air con on freezing. i didn't have the energy to have any hobbies anymore. just dissociate and sleep until its the next day and time to do it all again. after spending my early twenties getting my mental and physical health back on track, it kind of went to shit again.

it wasn't all bad. at this job i met some of my best friends, lifelong friends. but i wasn't thriving. i felt completely suffocated in my work identity, playing a role that others needed me to be, and feeling like i didn't have anything to offer outside of my job. where i was physically living, in regional central queensland (for anyone outside of aus, its one of the most conservative places in the country), was suffocating me too. it wasn't a very good place for a closeted trans person to live.

i turned 30 and instead of experiencing the stereotypical wave of lost youth like i expected, i felt inspired to get the fuck out. this life isn't serving me, i'm not happy, so let's get on with it and do something about it. and so i did the scariest thing that i've ever done. i quit my job and moved to the city to start my transition.

don't get me wrong, it wasn't as easy as that. moving didn't solve all my problems. saying goodbye to some of the only proper friends i've ever made in my entire was the hardest thing i've ever done and i haven't really made any close friends here, aside from someone i used to work with who moved here a year ago too. my transition didn't magically start. getting out of the shithole didn't sort out all of my anxiety about my family or society in general. but i faced my fear and saw a therapist and a doctor who prescribed me T-gel. i haven't taken it yet. it is sitting in my cupboard waiting for me when i'm ready.

life isn't perfect, but its better. marginally better is still better.

i wanted to share some of my favourite moments from 2024.

i went to sydney for the first time to see taylor swift! also my first concert ever. i've been a fan of hers for so long (my youtube channel is filled with edits of her songs lmao) and it was such an amazing experience. got to see sabrina carpenter live before her espresso moment so that was pretty cool too! from these videos it might seem like im uninterested BUT these are the only ones i have without my horrible singing in the background! i promise i was excited!! (this day was also pretty crazy because i woke up at 4:30am for the we're all doomed premiere so needless to say i was fucking wrecked at the end of it, but worth it!).

2. while in sydney i went on a walking tour of oxford street. i don't have any photos of this but i was completely shook seeing the whole street decked out for mardi gras. it was a surreal moment from me, after coming from a town with literal cow statues everywhere, to seeing a rainbow pedestrian crossing that wasn't defaced but celebrated. it was so surreal.

3. i turned the big 30 and had an emo themed party. i got a custom black cake but it was so shit and made me sick! i did get a refund but what the fuck

4. i went to a gay club for the first time, on chappell roan night no less! this was within a week of me moving to the city. pink pony club was my anthem at this time, for obvious reasons, so to scream this with a bunch of queers after leaving my old life behind was so cathartic.

bonus, i really liked good luck babe, okay?

5. i went to terrible influence and saw dan and phil with my own two eyes. i saw dan at we're all doomed last year but it was surreal to see the both of them together. i know i mentioned this several times, but i will keep harping on about it. i used my question card at the pre-show to properly come out to my friend as a trans guy, after three years of 'not a woman'. as luck would have it, they pulled my card and read my coming out moment out loud (and insulted my handwriting... never beating the "healthcare workers have shit handwriting" allegations). having them directly involved in my coming out moment, reading my words aloud, and them saying on breakfast tv that they love their trans fans.. i feel like it has changed me as a person. top moment of the year for me.

my self-acceptance moment aside, i had so much fun. i just wish i bought m&g tickets, they were available when i was checking out but my friend who i was going with didn't want to. i get kinda sad when seeing other's m&g photos. (mild spoilers ahead) but as the closest millennial to the stage, dan looked right at me when i cheered during his millennial outburst, so i'll take that!

so in summary, what a weird, heartbreaking, fantastic year for me. i have never been this optimistic about the new year before. i can't wait to see what 2025 brings.

I did an English project on it in 7th grade when we could pick literally any chapter book, I was mildly obsessed. Ooh I also read Dreadful Sorry and Time Windows (both by Kathryn Reiss) over and over. I still recommend all of them!

I feel a bit burnt out on big pop songs nowadays to the extent I can't even tell if a song is good anymore or not. I listened to Jins song today. It's fine but nothing about it excited me. Same with apt. I kinda liked it but it felt like cotton candy. Nice but sort of artificial and not something that provides sustenance (as in it wouldn't last on my playlist for very long). And whenever I do really really like a song, it gets so so so overplayed by Tiktok and radio that I eventually feel oversaturated with it. Can't stand to listen to anymore good luck babe or pink pony club or die with a smile or birds of a feather anymore even though I adored those songs when they first came out. Had to take a break streaming Jimin as well because streaming him all the time was giving me the same fatigue. I wonder if Spotifys new algorithm is a part of the problem. Nowadays you turn on shuffle or try some of their "for you" playlists and I swear it's the same 70 songs played over and over again.

And it really just goes back to the overbearing push that labels have been given all the “hits” this year has produced. A decent amount of them are still genuinely very good to me. (Good luck Babe and BoaF included) But this is the main issue with the label payola model cause everybody is exposed to the same rotation of like 5 songs and I’m certain everybody can round them off all by name. This year has been packed to the brim with releases. The most busy the music industry has been in years, yet it’s only that same rotation that has consistently been in public consciousness for the entire year.

That’s why it’s funny why I see kpop stans try to discount WHO’s popularity just because they “haven’t seen it anywhere” like on tiktok in contrast to other songs and it’s just like, well yes.

Cause that’s exactly what the labels are literally counting on imperceptive/ blindsided people like them to conflate visibility to actual popularity and that being “organic” equates to zero fan intervention and instead pure label push.

Fave performance: obviously the show i went to!! lollapalooza after party at the Vic Theater in Chicago you will always be famous to me and the other 1200 people whomst attended. she was amazing, i've never seen such energy on stage and in the crowd. it felt almost spiritual, i'm not exaggerating. her live singing is fantastic, and she has both incredible command of the crowd and endearingly self-conscious stage banter. Also the marie antoinette costume was beautiful and she looked great, and the wig drop was hilarious and perfect to set the tone. she's so extra in the absolute best way <3 10000/10. Other performances i think about a lot: her actual lollapalooza show (she really gave her best to both Chicago shows! and the Chicago crowds gave it right back! we love our Midwest princess!) and her performance of good luck babe on Jimmy Fallon, which was stunning visually and musically.

Fave interview: i love when she gets to chat with other queer people, so i have to go with the time she got interviewed by Trixie Mattel, the most recent one with Bowen Yang, and this Triple J interview.

I wanted to share some artists that I think really match up to my favorite Stranger Things ships

I did this a while ago, but looking back I definitely don't agree with a lot of the artists I chose, so I wanted to share my new pairings.

Byler- I think Conan Gray really encompasses the struggles of loving from afar and the pain that comes with queer, "unrequited" love. The entirety of his album, Found Heaven (which literally has an 80s synth pop vibe) screams byler, as well as other songs like Heather, Family Line, Summer Child, The Exit, The Cut That Always Bleeds, Fight Or Flight, Can We Be Friends?, Little League, Idle Town, and Crush Culture. I just think his music really represents Mike and Will's story-both the good and the bad.

Steddie- For them I have to say the Arctic Monkeys. I think they're music genre is a good mash up between Eddie's death metal and Steve's overall style (we're never really told what kind of music he likes, but I like to assume some sort of pop). I Wanna Be Yours, You Get Me So High, Do I Wanna Know, R U Mine, 505, and No. 1 Party Anthem all give me steddie vibes.

Ronance- girl in red is definitely so ronance. I wanna be your girlfriend, girls, You Stupid Bitch, hornylovesickmess, we fell in love in october, i'll die anyway., Too Much, and bad idea are great examples of songs that fit Nancy and Robin.

Lumax- I was having a hard time thinking of one for lumax, but Benson Boone honestly really fits them. He sings really passionate music, and I think one of the key parts of their dynamic is the fact that they'reboth very passionate, just in different ways. Max is fierce and fiery and Lucas is drawn to that flame, while also kindling it with his own loving personality and encouraging her, no matter what. I think Beautiful Things, Work Of Art, In the Stars, Cry, Ghost Town, and Slow it Down represent them well.

Elmax- Katy Perry gives me major elmax vibes, specifically One Of The Boys and Teenage Dream. They're both really fun, feminine, pop teen romance albums that feel like embodiments of El and Max during season 3. I Kissed A Girl, Teenage Dream, Part Of Me, Dark Horse, E.T, Firework, and The One That Got Away are the songs the remind me of them the most.

Rovickie- Chappell Roan is the first artist to come to mind when I think of Robin and Vickie. Good Luck, Babe! Literally feels like it was written from Robin POV, plus Casual, Picture You, Kaleidoscope, Red Wine Supernova, and Pink Pony Club are some other songs that I think fit the ship.

I started reading The Fireclown, based on the gloriously insane pulp cover. Sadly, it’s more “complaining about the existence of politics” than the cover promised, and suffers badly from being an early work by someone who would improve in both writing and message, so I gave it up.

Coincidentally, I’ve also been working through Horrible Beginnings, which is a collection of the first published short stories of notable horror authors, which has been more consistently delightfully unhinged. Once Upon a Crime (no not that one, this is fairy tale mayhem) has also been a fun dip into fantasy short stories.

Actually, if you’re ever in need of some quick intriguing reads, go here and look at the literally hundred+ anthologies Martin H. Greenberg was linked with, you’ll find something delightful from Sherlock Holmes to fantasy stories about cats to vampires to time travel.

Last Movie:

I’m going to openly interpret this and say Shin Cutey Honey. Hey, it was an OVA! 😜

Amazing fun, not nearly as violent/gory as similar OVAs of the era but embraced full frontal female nudity with decreasing embarrassment as the series goes on. If boobs aren’t a deterrent, however, fun humor and a strong take on the ur-example of the Magical Girl Warrior. I would love to get the notes on what the last 4 canceled episodes would have been… ah, well.

Last TV Show:

Again going to widely interpret this and say the Let’s Play of Uncle Chop’s Rocket Shop by Zahait.

If you have the time/ability, I recommend Uncle Chop’s as a game: basically single player “Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes,” with cults, murder, stealing, a lot of swearing, and other mayhem.

If you lack the ability to play yourself, though, Zahait is a wonderful pilot as he gradually realizes exactly what he has signed up for…..

Considering in 2021 I decided to leave my ex husband after realizing I am a lesbian, Good Luck Babe definitely makes sense as my top song. So fucking validating. You have no idea how I cried the first time I heard it, how I got emotional watching her perform it at the VMAs, how I strained my vocal chords trying to sing the high notes when I got to see Chappell live over the summer. This song is so important to me.

I really loved Hit Me Hard and Soft. Billie wrote a really incredible album that played with musical ideas in a unique way. As a hopeless romantic, of course Birds of a Feather was going to be the top pick. It went on my playlist for my girlfriend right as soon as I finished listening to it. Billie said in an interview when talking about this song "I thought, wow, this is it! I'm doing it, I'm writing a love song! And then I realized the whole thing is about dying" and if that isn't sapphic culture idk what is.
