BnHA Chapter 265: Tamaki What Did You Eat

Previously on BnHA: The heroes began their invasion of the Ol’ Villain Marriott. Down in the basement, Re-Destro was all “what’s going my fresh villain citizens, what a beautiful day, well I guess we should start that meeting” and they were all “WE’RE UNDER FUCKING ATTACK” and he made a face and I laughed. Class 1-B, Edgeshot, and Midnight then jovially killed some people, and then we cut to Dabi and Hawks! Hawks was all “sorry it has to be this way Bubaigawara but I’m gonna have to arrest you” and Twice got all Harry Potter in that one scene from the Prisoner of Azkaban movie, and then he did the thing, and fucking Hawks just fucking stood there and DID NOTHING. So now he’s gonna have to fight 100,000 Twices I guess, and meanwhile Dabi is running up the stairs on his way to intervene and somehow make things even more chaotic. Also either Hawks or Dabi thinks heroes are scum, and I’m still not clear on which. But basically it’s safe to say that angst is on the way, friends.

Today on BnHA: Tamaki turns into a horse. I have questions. Dark Shadow fights fucking Re-Destro and fucking destroys him in like two seconds flat, like holy shit whaaaaat. Then Tokoyami just hops on inside of Fatgum like a goddamn marsupial, and spends several pages like this, during which I completely can’t focus the entire time but I do remember that we learned that Machia won’t be joining the fight because he apparently only listens to Tomura, so that’s convenient I guess. Then we cut to Twice and Hawks (I literally typed out “Dabi and Hawks” just now and had to go back and change it, so you can see where my mind is at), and Hawks defeats Twice and is all “guess I’ve got no choice” and is seriously going to kill him (hahaha what the fuck), but then DABI FUCKING BURNS THE ENTIRE ROOM DOWN WITH EVERYONE IN IT WHILE LAUGHING AND THEN THE CHAPTER JUST ENDS. I feel like I just got slapped in the face.

so before we start, let me just mention that I got a ton of asks and messages about the whole “HERO SCUM” line, and I appreciate everyone keeping me up to date on the twists and turns of our wild little fandom lol. so as you all probably know, in Viz’s translation of the last page they had Dabi saying the line (“Twice, this isn’t your fault. as always... scummy heroes are to blame”). so naturally everyone was either like “whaaaaat!” or “I KNEW IT!!”, but then Caleb went and deleted his original tweet saying that it was Dabi, and replaced it with a new tweet, the gist of which was basically “I don’t fucking know either” and admitting he wasn’t an authority on the matter. so to sum everything up, we basically don’t know and will never know until the anime airs this in about three years’ time, or until the only man who can actually clear this up decides to stop drawing weird mushroom men for five goddamn minutes so he can clarify for us

anyway, so in the meantime it’s time to see who’s having angst this week! probably everybody! let’s just assume it’s everybody and save some time

We Can’t Go On Like This, Pittsburgh Pirates

My Dearest Pittsburgh Pirates,

I don’t know what there is really left to say. The last month has been a brutal slog. You’ve lost five in a row and 24 of your last 34 games. You are nine games out of first place and six games back of the final Wildcard spot. You went 1-5 this week splitting what turned out to be a two-game series with Milwaukee because of a rain out and then got swept at home in a four game series by the Diamondbacks. You showed no sign of life in that entire series. You scored eight runs in six games this week. That’s laughable. Your rotation started showing signs of life, but that hope has fizzled away. You can’t get anything resembling consistency from the rotation. Trevor Williams and Ivan Nova had been horrible for a month and then they gave you your two best starts of the week. Chad Kuhl and Joe Musgrove were riding high and then Kuhl got absolutely torched on Thursday (2 IP 8 ER) and Musgrove has been below average since his hot start. Taillon has been inconsistent all year, so you’re still left with the one guy who has arguably looked the strongest, Nick Kingham, still pitching in Triple-A. Not only do you not look like a playoff team, you look like one of the worst teams in baseball. What else is there to say? I’m annoyed I even have to write the letter this week. I can beg and plead with you to do better but the bottom line is that you aren’t good enough and I’m talking about everyone from the players to coaches to the front office. Blame being a small market team all you want but the fact remains that in the last 26 years you have had 3 winning seasons. What else is there to say?

That Gerrit Cole trade looks less and less impressive with each passing day. Cole has cooled down from his incredible start but so has most of the players you received in return. Joe Musgrove looked so good in his first couple of starts. He had four to five good pitches and laser sharp accuracy. After another poor performance on Saturday (5 IP 5 ER), his ERA has ballooned to 4.59 and his WHIP is up to 1.41. Those are the numbers of a mediocre pitcher. Michael Feliz got off to a good start in the bullpen before tail-spinning over the last month. He just went to the DL with shoulder problems but before that he had become the worst pitcher in your bullpen (5.51 ERA and a 1.47 WHIP) which is really saying something given how dreadful they have been. Colin Moran hasn’t been bad, but he’s nothing to write home about. He has 7 homers and 29 RBI’s while batting .265 with a .763 OPS. That’s slightly above average. You’re hoping for more than that when you trade your ace. Jason Martin is still lighting it up in Double-A with a .920 OPS but even his last ten games he only has a .776 OPS. You gave up a dollar and aren’t even getting four quarters back. These are still young guys so there’s always the chance they progress and improve. It’s just hard to feel optimistic right now when Cole is 9-1 with a 2.56 ERA, 0.90 WHIP, and 146 strikeouts in 105 2/3 innings. Woof.

The offense is on a steep decline. Francisco Cervelli is dealing with concussions issues from cumulative effect of having four concussions over the last eight years. That’s a bad sign. He was the only player in your starting lineup with an OPS over .800 (it’s .876) other than Austin Meadows who only has 110 at bats. Corey Dickerson and Starling Marte have nose-dived since their torrid start. Over the last month, Dickerson has a .665 OPS and Marte has a .721 OPS. Josh Bell had two hits yesterday but still sports a paltry .705 OPS. For as much as the fan base and I have criticized Gregory Polanco, he’s actually been coming around. Over the last two weeks, he has a .784 OPS. It’s sad when that’s considered impressive. Even as good as Meadows has been so far, his OPS of .662 over the last two weeks has brought his number down considerably. You rank 24th in baseball in home runs in a league that driven by home runs. That’s a problem. One solution would be to not play SRod in back to back games like you did this weekend. I can understand starting him against a lefty to see if he can snap out of his ridiculous slump. He’s batting .145 with a .559 OPS. He’s made 5 errors in 53 games so his defensive versatility isn’t even a strength anymore. I like SRod but this version of him doesn’t belong on a major league roster.  This lineup was able to produce earlier this year so maybe they will get back to the point, but right now this is a below average lineup which had been the strength of the team.

Why does it seem like you are never a fundamentally sound team? You always make mental mistakes and avoidable errors. Whether it’s Elias Diaz throwing a ball away that cost you a run on Friday night or the seemingly countless defensive mistakes your pitchers make, you are constantly sloppier than your opponent. You are 24th in baseball in fielding percentage and you have made the 7th most errors in the league so the numbers prove the theory. I didn’t hear the quote myself but I was told Neal Huntington, your general manager, said that as an organization you don’t teach fundamentals in the minors because the players should already know that. Wow. That’s a striking statement and explains a whole hell of a lot. I don’t understand how that can’t be a major focus especially for an organization that likes to draft batters who don’t have true positions. Even if players should already know the fundamentals that doesn’t mean they do. If they do know them, it never hurts to go over them so they are burned into their brains. If it’s second nature, then they don’t even have to think about it. It’s all in reaction. That cuts down on the insane amount of mental mistakes you make. I have no tolerance for that kind of organizational philosophy. You can’t always control how well guys hit or pitch, but you can control the little things. Fielding bunts, situational base-running, which base to throw to, and things of that nature should be taught over and over again. Instead of spending all your time going over analytics, which has merit, maybe you should spend some of that time focusing on the basics. The good teams are always fundamentally sound and you haven’t been for quite some time.

I should be more excited about this week. I’m planning to drive to San Diego next weekend to watch you play two games against the Padres but maybe I’m wasting my time. You start the week with three games in New York against the Mets. They’re in a similar boat as you having lost six in a row. They’re 13 games under .500 and are really struggling. Maybe you can start to turn things around against them or vice versa. You get a day off on Thursday before traveling to play three games against the Padres. They are ten games under .500, so you finally get a break from playing first place teams. I’ll be there to see you on Saturday and Sunday, so if you could improve immensely between now and then, that would be super. I’ve said all I need to say. The only thing you can do is refocus and try to get back on track against some weaker competition. See you in a few days.

P.S. stands for Pretty Sick which is the start that Oneil Cruz is off to in Low A ball. He came over in the Tony Watson trade a couple years ago. He’s knocking the cover off the ball this year with 10 homers, 44 RBI’s, and a .922 OPS in 66 games. He’s a shortstop that’s 6’6” and weighs 175 pounds so there’s obviously a huge frame he can build upon to add even more power. He might have to move to third base because the one downside for him is his defense. He’s made 24 errors in 66 games. That’s not a typo. It’s 24. But they don’t need to teach fundamentals, right? No way. I’m very intrigued by his bat, so he’s definitely a guy worth keeping an eye on.

Gaming chairs are quickly becoming one of the most popular accessories for gamers. You can't turn on a Twitch stream or watch a YouTube video without seeing the host sitting comfortably on one form of gaming chair or another.

A company that's making waves in the gaming chair space is AndaSeat. The firm got attention with its Fnatic Edition chair (check out our full review of that chair) and with its newly-announced high-end AndaSeat T-Pro 2 luxury gaming chair.

Now, the company has a seat targeted explicitly at gamers on a budget (and those who aren't of the larger variety) with its AndaSeat Jungle Edition chair. Rather than breaking the bank at $500 or more like many other chairs, this one comes in with a $299 price tag, which is quite reasonable for what it brings to the table.

With that said, does the AndaSeat Jungle Edition do enough to make it worth buying?

Design

This chair seems to be designed for the gamer who doesn't want huge graphics and busy color schemes. Instead, it comes in only two colorways: solid black and black and red. Both are tasteful, but we ended up going with the lowkey all-black model for our review.

There are a couple of small logos on the chair, but nothing that stands out too much. On the chair's back, right around where your shoulder blades rest, is an "AD" logo. On the lumbar support and headrest are the AndaSeat name, and the back has AndaSeat as well. The rest of the chair is a solid color with stitching accents that make it look good without being too aggressive.

Obviously, if you're looking for a gaming chair to serve as a conversation piece or a busy background for your stream, this might not be the best choice for you. But if you want a chair that'll look good in your office while still offering the racing seat design for which gaming chairs are known, this is an excellent option.

Features

As this is a more affordable chair, some of the higher-end AndaSeat features aren't included. Instead of the 4D armrests, the Jungle series gets 2D armrests. Basically, that means the armrests can only move up and down. The extra movement would be nice, but something had to give to get the chair down to a lower price, and that was it.

The chair is made with PVC leather, commonly referred to as Vinyl or not actual leather. However, the tradeoff for getting fake leather is increased stain-resistance, durability, and scratch-resistance.

So far, the chair has been able to handle everything I've thrown at it, so the PVC leather does seem to be doing its job in that regard. The other nice thing about PVC leather is that it's easy to clean, so you can simply wipe the chair down with a damp cloth to keep it looking good as new.

AndaSeat built this chair to both recline 160 degrees and rock back and forth, so you get the best of both worlds in terms of flexibility and usability.

Moving onto the chair's other features, you'll also get a neck pillow and lumbar pillow for extra support. Both are removable and can be placed in different spots depending on your height. This is yet another way the chair is able to be versatile to meet the needs of all different gamers (well, all different smaller gamers, since the chair doesn't work well for anyone larger than 265 pounds).

The chair also comes with wide wheels that are covered with PU rubber, which promises quieter rolling. For me, it wasn't quiet, but I live in an apartment with uneven and old wood floors (it was built over 100 years ago), so any chair is going to make some noise rolling over it. As long as you have a smooth floor, you should find that the wheels don't make too much noise.

This is not much of a feature, but it's worth mentioning that the chair rotates 360 degrees and does so entirely silently and with minimal effort.

Setup Process

The setup process wasn't too bad, and I was able to get the chair completely assembled by myself in about 30 minutes. The instructions are easy enough to follow, and none of the parts are so heavy that you won't be able to lift them.

The only part that took a little longer than I'd like was attaching the back of the chair to the seat (a problem my colleague Kris Wouk also faced when building the Fnatic Edtion chair in his review). Still, even that only added a couple of extra minutes to the process. It also took a bit of force to get the wheels to attach to the chair's base, but leaning on them and pushing with all of my weight made them click in nice and tight.

All of the tools you need to put the chair together come in the box (and it's a huge box), so even if you're not the type to spend time tinkering, you won't have to worry about running out to buy any extra tools to assemble the Jungle Series gaming chair.

As always, your mileage may vary when it comes to assembly should you choose to buy a chair (we all have different levels of patience when it comes to these sorts of things). I can say that the process was more or less painless in my experience, which started the chair-owning experience on a rather positive note.

Build Quality

It's hard to rate the build quality of something like a chair within the timeframe of a review. After all, most of the build quality shows itself after months and years of use. Still, I can say that chair feels quite solid and well-built.

The armrests feel strong and sturdy. The seat cushions are firm, so they don't feel like they'll give out after a while. The wheels don't seem like they're going to seize up anytime in the near future.

For AndaSeat's part, the chair sounds well-built too. The company says it uses a 22mm diameter enhanced steel frame to support the trials and tribulations gamers put it through. It also features a 55KG/M3 density foam padding that is designed to handle extended periods of use without giving way. In fact, the company promises years of use without losing its shape.

The company also offers a lifetime warranty on the steel framework and a two-year warranty for the other parts of the chair. Obviously, there are limitations (for example, the company won't cover rips in the PVC leather), but it's still nice to see AndaSeat is confident in its product.

Comfort

At the end of the day, the main thing that matters when buying a chair is comfort. The chair can look like a race car seat or the cockpit of a fighter jet, but if it isn't comfortable, none of that matters.

Fortunately, I found the AndaSeat Jungle Series chair to be quite comfortable, although I am a little big for it. I weigh 250 pounds, so I'm pretty close to the limit in terms of how much this chair is designed to hold. I also have large thighs from 20+ years of playing hockey, so the chair definitely felt like it was hugging me a little bit too much at first. As long as you are in the low 200 pounds or less range, the chair (which AndaSeat says is Medium), should fit you quite well.

I had some trepidations regarding the armrest, as I typically like my chairs to come with padded ones, and these are on the harder side. However, that wasn't an issue at all, and I found the slightly contoured shape of the armrests to be rather comfortable once I dialed in the height just right.

As far as the padding goes, it feels great. Of course, firmness is entirely subjective, and what everyone likes will vary greatly, but for me, the Jungle Series chair perfectly walks the line between being firm enough to be supportive and soft enough to be comfortable.

Personally, I don't like the lumbar support pillow that comes with the chair, so I took it off. I found that no matter where I positioned it, it stuck out a bit too far for my liking. It is soft and made of the same foam as the chair, so you might like it, but it wasn't for me.

The neck pillow works much better, though. I had to put it higher than the instructions called for since I'm fairly tall, but once I got it in the right position, leaning back during slow periods of gameplay felt great.

All in all, the chair is quite comfortable. For $300, I really have no complaints about the feel. I spend a good four to six hours sitting in it every single day of the week, and it feels good every time.

Should You Buy The AndaSeat Jungle Series Gaming Chair?

As long as you're slightly smaller than me, the AndaSeat Jungle Series gaming chair is a perfect option. It's relatively affordable, comfortable, well-built, and tasteful in the looks department.

If you're large (bigger than 260 or have larger-than-average thighs) you might want to look elsewhere. Catastrophic Hurricanes Are the ‘New Normal,’ and They Will Cost Trillions

“We got a little bit lucky,” said President Donald Trump about the storm which killed at least six people in Louisiana, ripped apart buildings, left more than half a million homes without power, and triggered a chemical fire from an industrial plant over Lake Charles.

Of course, Trump was glad he didn’t have to postpone his speech at the Republican National Convention. 

But while Hurricane Laura did not, thankfully, produce the catastrophic storm surge some predicted—weakening into a tropical storm—it represents an unmistakably escalating trend of extreme weather events due to increasing global temperatures. 

Hurricane Laura had followed hot on the heels of Hurricane Marco. The Atlantic hurricane season has already broken records with 13 named storms, which meteorologists consider well above-normal activity.

Recently published scientific studies suggest that the devastation wrought by Laura, and the potential catastrophe only narrowly avoided, are likely to become a ‘new normal’ if we continue to pump carbon emissions into the atmosphere.

Billion dollar disasters

Earlier in August, the US-based Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) published a major report on exactly this issue, titled Climate Change-Fueled Weather Disasters: Costs to State and Local Economies. 

The report brought together data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Billion-Dollar Weather and Climate Disasters database with other studies, to build a stark picture of what we now know about extreme weather risks. 

The report points out that since 1980, the number of extreme weather events per year in the United States has increased fourfold, with annual direct cost of these disasters increasing fivefold. 

In fact, they have catalogued a total of 258 extreme weather disasters within that period, each of them wreaking levels of havoc that cost upward of a billion dollars. Cumulatively, the total direct cost of all of these disasters is already more than $1.75 trillion.

And if climate change continues on a business-usual-trajectory, these costs are predicted to get bigger and bigger.

Sleepwalking into a perfect storm

“Climate models project that even with a moderate increase in greenhouse gas emissions, by the end of this century, the frequency of Category 4 and 5 hurricanes in the Atlantic Basin could increase by 45-87 percent, putting the continental United States at risk,” warns the EDF report.

It further points out that these risks will increase if we do nothing to stop climate change: “In the absence of climate policy to rapidly reduce emissions, we can also expect greater frequency or intensity of five other categories of weather disaster”—namely, severe storms, floods, freezes, drought, and wildfires. 

There’s not a single state in the US which has escaped extreme weather—every one of them has suffered at least one of what the report describes as a “billion-dollar weather disaster.” 

But five states in particular have been hit repeatedly by every single type of disaster: “North Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, and Texas have each endured several billion-dollar hurricanes, severe storms, floods, winter storms, freezes, droughts, and wildfires.”

The trillion dollar costs of business-as-usual

The report also lays out some important facts that allow us to arrive at some reasonable estimates of how these impacts and costs would intensify under continuing climate change. 

Since 2005, the US federal government has paid out roughly $30 billion a year to respond to extreme weather disasters. But from 2016-2018, the US has experienced disaster costs on average exceeding $150 billion a year. And total damages to the US mainland from the 2017 Atlantic hurricane season (comprising hurricanes Harvey, Irma, Jose and Maria) amounted to some $265 billion. 

These costs are set to increase dramatically if global average temperatures continue to rise. The EDF report notes that every 1° Celsius (C) of warming will generate roughly $257 billion of costs to the US every year from extreme weather impacts. This is consistent with the fact that current global average temperatures have, indeed, already increased by around 1°C since 1880.

That means that on a business-usual-trajectory, when we hit another 1°C higher to reach around 2°C of warming, annual US disaster relief expenditures will more than double to around $514 billion. 

Right now, we are well on our way toward this scenario. Another study published earlier in August in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences concluded that current carbon emission levels are consistent with the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s (IPCC) worst-case scenario for a 4.3°C world by 2100. 

While actual emissions are expected to slow-down below the worst-case due to a big drop in coal use which the IPCC model doesn’t account for, this still means it’s plausible to anticipate that we are on track to hit 1.5°C between potentially as early as around 2030, and to breach the 2°C mark by around 2050.

If annual costs rise from the EDF’s average of $257 billion to $514 billion a year from 2020 to 2050, this will amount on average to an annual increase of $8.56 billion every single year. 

Which means that on a business-as-usual global heating trajectory, extreme weather impacts will cost the US a total of $12 trillion by 2050.

In other words, within 30 years, the US will pay out over 60 percent of its current level of GDP in extreme weather costs due to climate change. This means that if we do nothing about climate change, extreme weather alone is going to increasingly push the US economy into a state of permanent recession through to the end of the century.

The real culprits: Big Oil

But this level of damage is also going to directly hit the bottom line of the biggest carbon-emitting American companies. 

One study released in June lead authored by physicist Dr Quintin Rayer, who heads up research at the UK-based financial consultancy firm, P1 Investment Management, argues that if these costs were applied to the world’s biggest carbon-emitting companies, it would considerably damage their share pricing, profitability and market values. 

Rayer identifies the top seven carbon-emitting publicly listed companies as follows: ExxonMobil, Royal Dutch Shell, BP, Chevron, Peabody Energy, Total, and BHP Billiton. 

Together, these companies are responsible for 9.5 percent of all carbon emissions from so-called ‘Scope 1’ and ‘Scope 3’ emissions—respectively, direct emissions from owned or controlled sources, and all other indirect emissions that occur in a company’s value chain. (These different ‘scopes’ are categories from the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, an accounting and reporting standard developed by the World Resources Institute.)

This makes them directly responsible for the increased risks of extreme weather, and suggests that a significant percentage of the costs of extreme weather impacts should be allocated to these firms.

If that was applied, Rayer calculates, these fossil fuel firms would “increasingly see around 1-2 percent losses on their market capitalizations (or share prices) from North Atlantic hurricane seasons.” 

This, in turn, has important implications for financial markets: “It is uncertain to what extent climate risks are priced into fossil companies’ share prices, and cautious investors might be concerned.”

Bye-bye, GDP

But right now, it’s not fossil fuel companies that are paying the price. It’s taxpayers.

This time last year, the National Bureau of Economic Research estimated that the fall-out to the American economy from extreme weather would reach as high as 10.5 percent of US GDP by 2100. 

More recent studies find this could be even higher. A peer-reviewed paper in Climatic Change released in November 2019 found that if we continue on our current course, “extreme risks” will have increased by 3-5.4 times by 2060. By 2100, the study concludes, climate-induced extreme weather events could shave off as much as 16 percent from the GDP of the American economy. 

As time goes on, our assessments of the risks and costs of climate change keep getting worse. The best scientific data proves that escalating climate change will gradually and inescapably destroy our economic prosperity, unless we take urgent action. 

In other words, if we fail to reign in the biggest fossil fuel producers, slash carbon emissions and transition to a renewable energy system, the probability that we will get “lucky” with coming hurricane seasons will rapidly diminish.

Unsettling Questions Regarding The Mumbai Terror Attacks Of 2008

The traumatic attacks in Mumbai in 26 November 2008 were described as India’s 9/11. The operation was unprecedented: ten young men battled hundreds of highly trained commandos for three days in a conflict that resembled David and Goliath. The huge media coverage created the impression that all the relevant facts about this event had been reported, but this impression is false.

Was anti-terror official Hemant Karkare deliberately killed on 26/11? Most probably. But what are we to make of the attacks on the Leopold café, the Taj, the Oberoi/Trident and the Jewish center at Nariman House, all unrelated to his demise?

Even those who suspect that Indian nationalists facilitated the assassination of Hemant Karkare continue to believe that the attacks on the other Mumbai targets were executed by Pakistani terrorists. According to this line of reasoning, Hindu nationalists joined with Pakistani terrorists to coordinate a double attack. Or one of these groups somehow obtained the exact details of the other group’s plans, including their date, time and location, and piggy-backed on them, praying that there would be no last-minute changes, delays or problems. Miracles do happen, they say.

As someone who does not believe in miracles, I have some pieces of information. This was all reported at the time, but has since been condemned to the memory hole. Each piece of information cracks the official legend of 26/11. Cumulatively, they shatter it.

1. The Number of Attackers

As the smoke of 26/11 dissipated, Indian authorities insisted that exactly ten young men had fought more than one thousand Marcos commandos, NSG commandos, police and security personnel for three days.

Yet, initially, the media reported that more than 20 attackers were involved. Vilasrao Deshmukh, for example, who was at the time the Maharashtra state chief, told Indian media on 27 November 2008 that 20 to 25 terrorists had entered Mumbai, and that many of them had escaped. He was not the only source for such figures. The New York Times reported on the 28 November 2008 that ‘the number of attackers have ranged from 20 to 40, with the number depending to a considerable extent on the number of boats involved.’ On the same day, USA Today reported, citing the Associated Press, that ‘more than 30 terrorists entered [Mumbai] by ship.’ Ha’aretz reported on 27 November 2008, that ‘nine members who were arrested...60 to 70 terrorists, some of whom came to Mumbai by boat, carried out the current attacks.’ Alex Neill, head of the Royal United Services Institute's Asia security programme, estimated that ‘up to 100 terrorists would have been involved in the planning and execution of the attack' and said 'it was surprising they had managed to keep it a secret.’

Who provided the media with these figures, on what basis, and for what purpose? Why has no journalist attempted to reconcile these initial figures with the ultimate tally of ten? Rakesh Maria, at the time the Mumbai Joint Commissioner of Police, had a ready answer: ‘This confusion is more or less a creation of the media.’

As the Mumbai authorities persisted in asserting that there had been only ten attackers, the New York Times wondered: ‘[P]erhaps the most troubling question to emerge for the Indian authorities was how, if official estimates are accurate, just 10 gunmen could have caused so much carnage and repelled Indian security forces for more than three days in three different buildings.’ But the paper of record did not follow up on this ‘troubling question.’ Was it a no-go zone?

2. Were Nine Attackers Arrested?

According to the official account, only one of ten attackers, later known as Kasab, remained alive. The other nine were reportedly killed in combat. But this was not what officials had initially said.

At first, the media reported that several ‘terrorists’ had been captured alive. P.D. Ghadge, a police officer at Mumbai's central control room, told the media on the first day of the attacks that ‘We have shot dead four terrorists and managed to arrest nine suspected terrorists.’ On 27 November, both Home Minister Shivraj Patil and Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister R R Patil declared that at least nine terrorists were captured alive. Early on 27 November, the BBC quoted the Mumbai police: ‘four suspected terrorists have been killed and nine arrested.’ On 28 November, the third day of the attacks, the BBC cited R R Patil, again to the effect that ‘nine gunmen have been arrested.’ Meanwhile, The Hindu cited Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh: ‘nine persons had been detained.’

As late as on 29 November, the Indian Express cited the Director General of Maharashtra Police, A N Roy, who said: ‘All I can tell you at this stage is that nine suspects are with us and that some of them were picked up from around the operational areas. Once we finish questioning them, many facts will emerge. The whole story will shortly unfold.’

Then nothing more was heard of these arrests. The same media that previously reported that up to nine attackers had been arrested insisted that only one ‘terrorist’ had been captured alive. This change of narrative was not accompanied by any explanation. Did public officials lie about the multiple arrests? Were they lied to? Were arrested terrorists executed in custody? These are disturbing questions that remain unanswered.

Whatever the ultimate truth, it is clear that the authorities lied to the public, either initially, or subsequently, or both. Knowing why they lied may help reveal the hidden truth behind 26/11.

3. Who Were the Alleged Attackers?

The public has been led to believe that the Mumbai attackers were properly identified. But were they?

To find out, it was necessary to determine, firstly, whether the bodies of the persons under police custody belonged to those who were observed by witnesses at the sites of killings; and secondly, the identities of the dead – from where they came, their real names, their birth dates, etc.

According to pathologists, the nine bodies presented to witnesses were burned beyond recognition. Whatever the state of the bodies, a visual identification of mutilated bodies, weeks after the events, under the prying eyes of police officials, cannot be considered a reliable exercise.

Nor were the real identities of the persons, whose bodies were held by police, determined. Their real names, birth dates, nationality and their residence addresses remain unknown. No family member came forward to identify either the bodies or the ‘sole living terrorist’, Kasab. His identity was based on what he allegedly told police officials behind closed doors.

Even the circumstances under which the nine ‘attackers’ died were not established by investigators or the Special Court. Did these alleged militants die in a military clash in Kashmir? Were they executed after being captured? Why are the precise circumstances in which they died kept a state secret?

4. Did the ‘Attackers’ Come By Sea?

A sub-story of the 26/11 legend is that the attackers arrived in Mumbai by sea. Did anyone witness their landing at the seashore?

Only one person, Bharat Tamore, testified at Kasab’s trial that he observed young men landing on the Mumbai seashore on the evening of 26 November 2008. Was his testimony credible?

Tamore said in court that at the time he was employed by the Taj Mahal Hotel. He said that on 26 November at about 9:15 pm, while he was walking to work at the Taj, located 15 minutes from his residence, he saw ‘a dinghy coming towards Badhwar Park.’ He said he saw 10 persons on the boat, wearing saffron-coloured life-saving jackets. He could see them because of the street light. According to him, they all were between 20-25 years old. Eight of the said ten persons removed their jackets and put them in the boat before getting out. Each had one haversack and one hand bag. Tamore said he saw two of the said ten persons quite closely while they were proceeding towards the main road. Since both of them were unknown in the locality, Tamore intercepted them. Both of them told him that they were students. He also saw the remaining six persons proceeding towards the main road. The two persons who were left out in the boat proceeded in the same boat towards Nariman Point. (Judgment, p. 264)

Tamore told the court that he returned home from the Taj at about 7.00 am next morning. At that time, he had seen about 3-4 policemen standing near Badhwar Park Railway Officers' colony: ‘The policemen were talking something about [an] inflatable boat. [Tamore] therefore narrated the incident witnessed by him to the said policemen’. (Judgment, p. 265) He also said he identified Kasab in an identification parade as the person who told him they were students. (Judgment, p. 266) Tamore admitted under cross-examination that he might have seen Kasab’s photograph on television before the identification parade was held. (Judgment, p. 267). The Supreme Court revealed that this identification parade was held on 28 December 2008, after Kasab’s photograph had been widely and repeatedly published (SC, p. 53). The High Court ‘[did] not attach much importance to this.’ (HC, p. 432)

The defence counsel challenged Tamore's account: it was high tide at the time, and therefore the dinghy Tamore claimed to have seen could not have reached the seashore. Tamore admitted that it was high tide at the time but did not explain how the dinghy reached the seashore (Judgment, p. 266).

When making his first report to the police, Tamore surprisingly did not mention anything regarding the incident at the Taj, where he allegedly spent the entire night (Judgment, p. 267). The court did not invite anyone to corroborate Tamore's narrative. No one, for example, confirmed that he was an employee of the Taj; that he spent the night confined in the basement of the hotel; that he did not see or hear any of the incident occurring in the hotel; that he exited the hotel shortly before 7:00 am; and that on his way home he met policemen at the shore discussing a boat. No one confirmed what he actually told the police and when he did so. These failures are particularly significant – and disturbing – because Tamore was the sole witness produced in court who claimed to have observed people landing on the Mumbai shore on the evening of 26 November 2008. These failures are compounded by the facts that he told media after the trial regarding his alleged ordeal at the Taj, facts that he apparently withheld from the court, unless he lied to the media. The court's failure to thoroughly examine Tamore's credibility can hardly be attributed to negligence or to difficulty in finding staff members of the Taj who could corroborate or invalidate his narrative. The court also did not ask the police officers with whom Tamore interacted to confirm his story. The court, obviously, did not wish anyone to challenge Tamore’s narrative.

Tamore’s name was widely publicised in the media shortly after the attacks as the key witness to the landing of the alleged terrorists at the seashore. India Today wrote on 29 November 2008, for example: ‘The six terrorists who got off at Machimar Nagar were first spotted by Bharat Tamore, a Koli (from the fishing community) who works as an assistant supervisor at the Taj.’ This report did not quote Tamore directly, and it was not revealed how India Today discovered Tamore.

After Kasab's trial, Tamore and his wife were interviewed by Rediff. In this interview, new information came to light about his alleged experience at the Taj during the first night of the attack. Here is an excerpt from that article:

When Tamore reached his locker [at the Taj] and changed at about 9.30 pm on November 26, he heard some strange thumping overhead in the hotel's coffee shop, the Shamiana. Surprisingly, it continued. And got louder and stranger in sound. Then hordes of terrified employees, on the run, came pouring back into the staff area, where Tamore still was, and shared breathless descriptions of the ongoing attack and the terrorists. ‘They recounted that they were wearing jeans, and 'sack bags' (rucksacks) on their backs and carrying bags in their hands‘ Suddenly with cold foreboding Tamore knew exactly who they were.

He then said that his experience at the Taj was not limited to what others told him:

‘They herded about 100, 150 of us into an area near the bakery and told us to stay here. At the time we thought it was a temporary attack and we would get out after it was over. Who knew they would be there for three days?! We had no water, no food. And no way of telling people at home that we were still safe. We had all turned our phones off.’

Going by this account, Tamore not only saw terrorists at the Taj and heard them giving orders, but was kept with 100 or 150 other people without water and food. Yet, surprisingly, he did not report anything about this traumatic experience to the police or the court. Indeed, the court actually affirmed that he ‘had not seen anything of the incident’ at the Taj (Judgment, p. 265-6). Did Tamore lie to the journalists, did the media invent his account or did he withhold information from the court?

Rediff finally disclosed that ‘much of early 2009 was marked by recording [Tamore’s] testimony, working with the Mumbai police's crime branch to have his deposition ready.’ Tamore added: ‘There is a little Hanuman temple near my home. Every day when I passed it I would pray that god would give me the strength to see this through properly. That I would give the right information in court. And do the whole thing correctly. It was an attack on my home, my livelihood, my country. I had to testify.’ It certainly required substantial mental and emotional strength to ‘do the whole thing correctly’ and avoid contradicting himself. Let’s hope the police were happy with his performance after having coached him for ‘much of early 2009.’

According to media reports, three further persons had seen the ‘terrorists’ landing on the Mumbai seashore: Anita Uraiyar (aka Uddaiya), who claims to have been taken secretly to the United States for debriefing after 26/11; Prashant Dhanu(r), a fisherman who testified in court but did not claim to have seen any of the attackers; and Sumit Supadia, who claimed in media interviews to have seen the attackers land on the seashore, but was not asked to testify in court.

In sum, the story of the ‘ten’ attackers landing on the Mumbai seashore rests on the testimony of a single witness who was coached by police for his court performance and whose credibility is questionable.

To enhance the credibility of the sea-landing legend, CNN-IBN reported on 27 November 2008 that seven fishermen has been arrested on the first night of the attack as suspects, reporting that ‘police found a boat loaded with explosives near the Taj Mahal.’ Nothing further was heard of that boat, the explosives or of the detained fishermen.

(5) Were the Individual Killings Investigated?

In a case of murder, criminal investigators must determine, as best they can, the circumstances under which the crime was perpetrated: who caused the victims’ injuries, when and where they were attacked, when they died and what type of injuries led to their death. The crime scene must also be documented in accordance with standardised rules.

Getting a hoverboard with bluetooth speakers and other nice features was a real surprise as well. It sounds amazing. Connecting to your smartphone with a mobile app or Bluetooth is super easy. using your smartphone you can control the maximum speed, driving force, steering sensitivity and more. This self balancing scooter is a bit pricey due to that Lamborghini branding, but you get a lot for your money. This hoverboard has a nice large platform so that you can get the best foot position possible.

The motors are responsive and fast, which again, is what I would expect from a showy vehicle like this one. Those 8.5-inch tires make the height perfect for riding. The dual 400-watt motors kick in from the moment you climb on. It has a max speed of 9 MPH, which may not seem like a lot, but when the wind is in your face, with that power underneath you, it’s all you need. It has a cool self-balancing mode that is great for those who are still getting to know hoverboards. This means that this performance hoverboard balances itself when you turn it on, giving you a stable platform to step onto.

This hoverboard delivers just the right amount of power, ease of use and stability. It’s a smooth and comfortable ride that users of all ages are going to enjoy. It performed well on grass and uneven terrain full of sticks and twigs. It has a bit of trouble on wet ground, but that’s not unexpected. killing is not so easy as the innocent believe

or, some follow-up thoughts on Hawks, and chapter 265.

you guys this chapter has got people in some kind of way though. myself included lol.

it’s never a good thing when I get an ask like this on a Wednesday. and SURE ENOUGH, lmao. hang in there anon we’re in this together.

I love how all three of these asks seem to be implying that Hawks is basically toast. death certificate all but signed and notarized. which is reasonable to be fair!

regarding Machia though, after giving it some thought, the fact that he was mentioned when he didn’t have to be leads me to believe that Fatgum is correct, and he will not be making an appearance. it’s possible this is just the manga attempting to catch us off guard, but if Horikoshi wanted to do that, he could have just as easily bided his time and made no mention of him at all until he suddenly came barging out of his hidden basement room at an inopportune moment. going out of his way to say “hey remember Gigantomachia? yes well he is in sleep mode at the moment so not to worry” is kind of a waste of time unless it really is true. could be wrong on this though!

regarding the voice recorder/communication/mystery device thing, I now have a brand new ridiculous theory on that thanks to a chat with @blessedgirthma​, but more on that shortly. 

now then, let’s talk a bit more (or, to be honest, a lot more) about Hawks.

lol y’all I am being called out. but in seriousness, this is honestly one of my favorite things about doing the recaps though. the fact that my reactions are recorded for posterity for better or worse. the thing is, when I’m actually reading the chapter for the first time, it’s a complete rollercoaster lol. it’s just whiplash reactions to stuff (which is why 90% of it is dumb jokes because that is my honest instinctive reaction to 90% of everything) and speculating wildly on the spot. and a lot of times it is way off.

one of the things that particularly impressed me about this latest chapter is the fact that Horikoshi was genuinely able to manipulate my emotions so effectively and make me so anxious about the fates of both of these characters in the heat of the moment. not every writer can do that! in fact it’s pretty rare for a shounen manga in particular to actually get me to really start doubting and wondering whether a character is actually going to die. because let’s be real guys, it’s a rarity. especially with this particular series. and even when people do die, they come back as OFA ghosts, or they’re brought back to life as Kurogiri, or they never died to begin with and they’re currently trying to kill Hawks, etc. so on top of the shounen manga tropes, we also have comic book “no one is ever truly dead” tropes. so yeah.

so the point I’m leading up to here is that I don’t think Hawks is actually going to die. I know it’s ridiculous; I know he was just set on fire and isn’t looking too hot (ha) right now, but again. it’s a shounen manga. other characters have survived (1) breaking their arms a dozen times, (2) having holes of all shapes and sizes pierced through their lungs, (3) everything All Might and AFO did to each other at Kamino jesus christ, (4) having their entrails spilled out, (5) being crushed by a water tower, (6) pissing Todoroki off during the climax of Heroes Rising, (6) being blown up from the inside out by a quirk, and (7) having their eye sliced open and being blasted through a building and falling fifty feet from the sky onto the hood of a car while on fire. and this is far from an exhaustive list. this is an off-the-top-of-my-head list. yeah. so neither Hawks nor Twice is actually dying if this is anything to go by.

now then. I said I was going to talk about Hawks, so let’s talk. first off, I just want to make it clear that I’m not part of the pro-Hawks faction, or the pro-Villains faction, or whatever. I’m in neither of those factions, or both of them. or whatever you want to call it. basically I love Twice and I love Dabi and I love Hawks. and recent events have not changed this at all, except perhaps to make me love them even more. but anyway, just wanted to put that on the record. and yes, I told Dabi to set Hawks on fire, and I would say it again too, because Dabi setting Hawks on fire potentially saved both Hawks and Twice, so yeah. homicidal though it may have been, it was good timing all the same, Dabi.

so Hawks! let’s talk about what actually happened in this chapter. “um Hawks tried to kill Twice, is what happened.” well, not quite! what actually happened is that Hawks said he was going to kill Twice. and then... he didn’t.

lol, yeah. eyeroll-inducing technicality there, I know. wishful thinking, naive, willfully disregarding what we actually saw in favor of trying to support my own interpretation of the character. absolutely that’s what it is! but since we all acknowledge that, might as well continue down this line of thinking and see where it leads. so indulge me if you will.

so. three things:

(1) Hawks is a spy. he lies. he lies all the time. when Horikoshi wants us to know what he’s actually thinking, he shows us.

so naturally the reason I bring this up is just to point out the fact that throughout all of chapters 263, 264, and 265, we have not actually seen a single one of Hawks’s thoughts (assuming Caleb is correct in his translation of 264). he’s making speeches, he’s trying to plead his case to Jin, and we see a ton of Jin’s thoughts. but none of Hawks’s. not so much as an ���I was afraid of this...’ or ‘his quirk is too dangerous, I can’t let a single one of the clones slip through’ or any of your typical run-of-the-mill fight narration we might normally expect to see for a scene like this. there’s nothing. and what this tells me is that Hawks’s words may not in fact line up with what he’s actually thinking.

(2) Hawks is hesitating. we know how fast he is. hell, even if we didn’t, this chapter would be all the evidence we need. but we do in fact have plenty of other evidence.

these things are deadly. each one is solid and we’ve seen he’s capable of using them like bladed weapons. if he wanted to, he could stab Twice through the heart in the blink of an eye. look at the precision he used to tear his mask open (to distinguish the real Twice from the clones) without actually harming him. he wouldn’t even have to move. but he is deliberately holding back and trying to stop Twice in other ways -- by pleading with him (“I don’t want to fight you”), hitting him with a disabling blow, and finally by pinning him down and trying to intimidate him.

but then he just sits there.

saying he has no choice. holding the feather knife above him. but he doesn’t actually do it. and okay, maybe it’s because he truly is fond of Twice, as we know, and so he’s giving him the chance to say his last words or something. but what was it he said just a few pages before this one, though? “we eliminate villains with haste”? I don’t know about you, but I for one sure wasn’t seeing any haste in those last few pages. the man who goes too fast, huh. I’m just saying.

but maybe he was just psyching himself up to do it. maybe he would have gone through with it on the very next page if Dabi hadn’t intervened. maybe. but you know what though? that hesitance -- the fact that he was so conflicted despite supposedly believing that he’s doing the right thing, and despite being groomed by the shadier elements of hero society since childhood to make this precisely kind of decision -- to me, that does indicate that Hawks is not a killer by nature. he’s battling with himself right now. he’s desperate. he doesn’t want to go through with it; he resists the act; and then crucially, right at the decisive moment, Horikoshi prevents us from seeing whether or not he actually would have done it.

(3) and what about that? it’s interesting that this question is one which has come up over and over ever since the disappearance of Best Jeanist, isn’t it? the question of just how far Hawks is actually willing to go. the question of whether or not, when push comes to shove, he will make the cutthroat decision. will Hawks kill for the greater good? Horikoshi poses this question again and again, and yet he still refuses to give us an actual answer.

(oh hey, that’s a nice flashback you’re having. sure would be a shame if it were to... cut off right there so that we never find out what actually happened past this point!!)

so that’s it! those are all my current thoughts about Hawks and about this contentious chapter which is tearing fandoms and loved ones apart. in my perfect world Hawks lives and Twice lives and Best Jeanist lives and Dabi lives but gets captured maybe so as to have Endeavor angst along with some fucking flashbacks at goddamn last. as of today March 22nd 2020 all of these are still possible outcomes, so I’m gonna embrace it.

It's got dual 400W powerful motors, a comfortable max speed of 9 miles per hour and several other nice features that are worthy of a hoverboard that bears the Italian auto maker's brand. You really feel the power of those dual motors on this performance hoverboard with Bluetooth.

This cool hoverboard is durable and built to last, however, that plastic shell, pretty as it looks, gets dinged up easily. Because of that, I would recommend this hoverboard for users who are already experienced and not likely to scuff up the shell as much. Aside from that, the build quality here is solid and this vehicle will stand up to a lot of tough riding. Weighing in at 43 pounds you can carry it when you need to, but at that weight, it feels a bit too heavy.

You have to give TwoDots credit. It's not easy to capture that Lamborghini style in off road hoverboard form, but somehow they did just that. This is a self-balancing hoverboard that stands out from the crowd, making heads turn. It has bright stylized lights modeled after the headlights on a Lamborghini Huracan and all of the other detailing is just right. It's probably the coolest designed hoverboard online.

Getting a hoverboard with bluetooth speakers and other nice features was a real surprise as well. It sounds amazing. Connecting to your smartphone with a mobile app or Bluetooth is super easy. using your smartphone you can control the maximum speed, driving force, steering sensitivity and more. This self balancing scooter is a bit pricey due to that Lamborghini branding, but you get a lot for your money. This hoverboard has a nice large platform so that you can get the best foot position possible.

The motors are responsive and fast, which again, is what I would expect from a showy vehicle like this one. Those 8.5-inch tires make the height perfect for riding. The dual 400-watt motors kick in from the moment you climb on. It has a max speed of 9 MPH, which may not seem like a lot, but when the wind is in your face, with that power underneath you, it's all you need. It has a cool self-balancing mode that is great for those who are still getting to know hoverboards. Durability isn’t a problem thanks to an aerospace-grade aluminum frame.  Also on board is a dual braking system, large 8.5-inch front tires,  a 250W motor and it has an accompanying app for checking out speed, power, and stats. It has a 220 lb. max load capacity. The bottom line here is that you sacrifice some features for a reliable and sturdy commuting scooter that is easy to take anywhere.
