if im being honest and allowing myself to vent a bit about it ... another red flag was when the DM went 'wow i love the detail of your backstory but idk what i can do with it tho ):'
#[static]#it immediately made me feel bad for trying to make a character work with the aesthetic she had given us tbh#i could already tell she didnt seem to be super character story driven so i just made a pretty simple drifter-type#for a post-apocalyptic setting n such and made a group that tied into the whole over-arching premise#i also literally just did bullet points cuz i could tell she wasn't gonna want to read one of the backstories i usually do#and as someone who has mostly dm'd in the past i did my v best to make a character that was super easy for the dm to incorporate in any way#like a solid reason for being there a reason for wanting to adventure with strangers a reason for seeing the mission through no matter what#made a whole small faction and connected them to the overarching theme and plot in multiple ways#wrote down lore and npcs she could use for the faction if she didnt want to make up her own#like all the works and all i got was two sentences back about it ... one of them being like 'cool but i dont like the extra details'#aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhh#ok im done yelling now i just need to vent for a second#i feel bad for feeling kinda bummed about the experience because this is the first time i got to play at a physical table in years#and i know how hard it is to DM#but also when you come to the table with zero notes for the first session its ... probably gonna be disappointing jkfghdf#i DID have fun however because the party banter was hilarious and it was fun getting to hang out with ppl!#but communication between DM and players was not great#also let me be clear she did like that i made so many connections and hooks into the story and it helped her a lot#she was NOT interested in my character's past like ... jobs or npcs#but also u could just Not say anything about it and just be like 'sweet cool thanks for the info' LMAo

I can’t stop being upset about Veilguard’s writing, and apparently the only way I can get it out of my thoughts is to put it down in words, so here we go…
I’m frustrated, I’m upset, and the longer I think about the way this game was written, the more problems present themselves… and I bloody hate that. It feels like a first draft writing effort, and every time I’m reminded that this game was in development for so many years, I cannot fathom this being the end result. Dragon Age 2 had 16 months of development, and it feels more cohesive and put together writing-wise. I can see the years of polish in the visuals, but the spectacle of the game doesn’t blind me to all the problems in the writing.
Naturally, these are personal opinions, I am genuinely thrilled for people who have played the game and enjoyed it – I wish I could be there enjoying it with you – but clearly these things get under my skin more and spoil the experience for me when they aren’t problems for you. And I also acknowledge there are genuine good parts of the game which I enjoy, but those moments aren’t enough to overshadow the negative experiences that irk me.
And because this post has apparently gotten away from me… I’m gonna put some headings to summarise the problems I’m having, because otherwise this is just a massive rant with no structure.
Show me things, stop just telling it to me.
So much of the game feels like writer’s notes where they put “what the player should take away from this scene” and instead of being creative with how they do that, they just say it verbatim. My immersion in this game was being broken by the game reminding me it’s a video game – which yes, I know it is, but I want to be invested in this world and feel like I’m part of it.
Varric and the game’s own pop-up system is the main problem that’s consistent through the whole game – constantly dropping narration or mission summary where they have zero problem dropping exposition on us and/or spoiling future content. Forget letting me explore these things and reach my own conclusions, the game is going to make sure I know exactly the interpretation I’m meant to have for every moment.
And it’s so damn frequent, I feel like they don’t think I’m paying attention and therefore need to constantly poke me with reminders instead of trusting me to reach my own conclusions. Do they not trust me to have an attention span long enough to go on a walk with Davrin without reminding me at the end of the walk that I did that?
To add to that problem, I absolutely hate how the writing just has people know things – they shouldn’t know this, they shouldn’t be talking to us about this, all evidence points to them not being able to know or be ok discussing this, but for some reason they do.
The Veil Jumpers suddenly just know how to translate and interact with ancient elven artifacts, ignore how the Dalish have been trying to do that since the fall of the Dales (and realistically, even before that) and their efforts over those hundreds of years were a scrap, a pittance of what could be known. But I guess the Veil Jumpers are just better than those hundreds of years in the few years they’ve been active.
Oh, and the scary reputation of the Dalish is just gone? These people just go to the elves they have deemed “savages” because they simply know these ones have good intentions? This world has been established as very untrusting of the intentions of other groups, but that’s simply gone now for this one – I wish I was shown how this started in some way instead of just being told it’s chill now.
And don’t get me started on Strife and Irelin and their seemingly endless knowledge that they shouldn’t have. I read the comics, I get that they’d probably know about the Dreadwolf and have a vested interest in learning more once that particular bit of information was revealed to them – but they somehow also just know about the mask Cyrian is wearing? They know it will influence him but not control his will? Why do you know this with no doubt whatsoever?
Why can’t these things just be presented as theories? Or give us something to find and reference where that information comes from? I want to learn things without just having characters tell me things they know.
And overall, I hate how this game decides to just exposition dump information on us, then we sit around and talk about the exposition dump – it’s overwhelming in magnitude. It feels like such a passive way to have us engage with everything, and this is supposed to be an interactive experience. Instead of being force-fed exposition in big chunks, drip feed details, let us put the puzzle together, let us gather and discuss what we learn with multiple interpretations like the RPG this is meant to be.
And this exposition problem also ruins the stakes in the game for me. Personal interpretation, probably, but the stakes in this game feel artificially inflated to me via having characters constantly tell Rook they are going up against the biggest threat ever. We bring in past heroes of the series to reiterate that, how they think we’re up against worse things than they faced… and I don’t feel that. Telling me constantly how hopeless things are, but every obstacle ends up being overcome relatively easily and without great losses… no, I don’t feel the stakes are real.
Oh, and hearing the talk of how all of Thedas is in trouble, there is so much destruction and only Rook can save them… why don’t you find a way to show me that? Because I’m not feeling that, I’m not seeing it, and I’m starting to think the Inquisitor is making stuff up so Rook doesn’t ask them to get involved again when they’re so busy.
This is a lore problem in the series…
Plot holes and wonky lore can happen, it’s not surprising… especially when there are three games prior to this as well as several books, comics, and other branches of the universe. There have been inconsistencies since the start, and a lot of it doesn’t matter – I don’t care if the second moon is forgotten about, the moon not being there isn’t going to make a problem with the way the story is told since that moon is never something elaborated upon in the plot.
This game though… it has problem that are both related to information in this game not being consistent with previous games, and information within its own contained plot contradicting itself.
I’m not going to beat the dead horse of “this isn’t how the previous games did it/explained it”, people who played the previous games are aware, I don’t see a point of elaborating in detail all the instances of this. Just take some dot points of the one’s I noticed:
The Crows are a horrifying organisation that are suddenly presented wholesome
The Qun offering to rehabilitate Karash is horrifying and it’s presented wholesome
Slaves are meant to be everywhere in Tevinter, but we don’t see that
Racism is supposed to be rampant in Tevinter (and other nations, but particularly here for any non-human), and we also don’t see that
Handling pure lyrium is fine now (unless you’re Harding)
Adult Dalish without vallaslin (Elgar’nan’s captives)
Fenharel’s agents are just gone now – as are all signs of mass elven exodus from cities
Solas’ opinion on blood magic is suddenly negative instead of neutral
Spirits dying is given the same weight as people dying
Flemeth…….just everything about Flemeth and Morrigan
Re-write of the after credits scene in Inquisition to recontextualise the Flemeth and Solas interaction
Isabela’s attitude towards Shathann sending Taash away without their knowledge (the comics make me doubt she’d be cool with this)
Non-Dalish elves knowing things about ancient elves and elven language
Blight sickness and how darkspawn are “born” (some leeway for this one since the blight is overall just different in this one, but it does feel less interesting this way)
Morrigan naming the Crossroads in lieu of the true name being lost to time, but everyone uses the term now
Crossroads looking different through elven eyes
You can’t just make people be magic/not magic (me side-eyeing Illario and his random ability to do magic now)
This is a contained problem in this game…
What troubles me more is the inconsistencies within the same game… that isn’t just deciding “this is how it works now in this iteration”, this is a problem that they wrote into existing, then either didn’t notice or didn’t resolve appropriately. And granted, some of these things aren’t inherently plot holes, but when you put certain aspects under inspection, it doesn’t make things look good.
For starters… I have to talk about Varric. Or more accurately, not-Varric.
I’m under the impression that not-Varric is simply Rook’s memory of Varric being projected for them. I personally don’t think there’s some extra level of Solas interference in what Rook is seeing moment to moment… and I feel the need to state that because Rook’s memory cannot conjure up information that Rook doesn’t know.
So why does not-Varric point out that the ritual dagger is the dagger from DA2?
Rook could not recognise it, there is absolutely no reason for Rook to even theorise that – so not-Varric should not be able to impart this knowledge to Rook. And what makes this worse for me, aside from being an impossible situation as the plot presents it, is that this observation doesn’t matter in the slightest. They put this backstory to the McGuffin Dagger and I don’t know why since all it does is create a plot hole. The only purpose I can see for this moment existing at all is to bolster the illusion that not-Varric is real and trying to help with the cause in whatever way possible.
Then there are other issues with Varric not being alive which makes other character’s lack of talking about him feel awful. Like, it’s not natural the way people avoid mentioning him when it would be very appropriate to do so – and I understand that to an extent, the game’s gotta game – they want to surprise us and therefore the characters aren’t going to blatantly give the surprise away early. But the Inquisitor doesn’t ask after him at all? Doesn’t mention how Kirkwall is coping now that the viscount is dead? Dorian doesn’t say anything after learning Varric found Solas in his city and then died? Isabela has nothing to say about Varric until after the illusion is broken for Rook?
It makes it feel like Varric’s friends (aside from Harding, the only person who seems to actively mourn him at the start of the game) don’t give two shits that he’s gone.
That’s not even accounting for how characters don’t bother to check in with Rook who is constantly talking with the companions about their various issues of mourning, hearing voices or apparitions, and just checking in with them overall – but none of that is seemingly reciprocated.
Frankly, this makes me feel awful. I feel awful for Varric being seen as so disposable that his friends don’t mention him or his absence. I feel awful for Rook who is apparently not worth the direct effort that they offer others.
And I try to think of how a new player to this series would feel about all of this – because Varric was just some guy who walked us through a tutorial in this game. Most of our time with him is fake, any connection I saw form between Rook and Varric in this game isn’t real – but then Rook mourns Varric more than he mourns the companions we have spent most of the game with.
I don’t like it.
And I don’t like the utilisation of returning characters. Morrigan, or as she’s utilised in this game deus-ex-Morrigan, has a new view of Flemeth and therefore she will take on Mythal’s soul fragment so she can again swoop in and save the day by handing us the means to get a reconciliation type ending… it couldn’t be something that characters in this game figure out, just have a returning character provide us with the magic solution. Also ignore how the whole reason Morrigan was afraid of her mother in the DAO and DAI was that her body would get taken over by her spirit… but I guess that doesn’t happen now. We can just create new rules for this iteration because it’s easier to tell the story this way.
Solas is also just… I’m so upset by what was done with him. He was a character in DAI who told half-truths or lied by omission, leaving others to assume false information without him actually saying it – it was never just blatant lies to take advantage of others. And his motivations were about restoration of something he felt he had robbed the world, it was about righting what he viewed as a mistake which lead to such a cascade of problems that he needed to somehow rectify it. Whether you agree with his point of view or his desires doesn’t matter, his principles remain the same in terms of what motivates him.
Then this game happens and he’s just a liar constantly, and not even a clever one if you can apparently just trick him up with a “woopsie, this isn’t the real dagger”, and he also apparently has no insight into the idea that Rook would anticipate that.
They make him act like the worst interpretation someone could have of him, the thing he actively was trying to tell us was a false interpretation in DAI and the comics. But history was written and remembered by those who experienced the negative outcomes of his choices, and they remembered that as the greatest evil in comparison to what else could have been. But apparently in this game, that’s the truth now. His motivation is about his desires and he cares nothing for the people who has hurt or will be hurt. But it’s ok, because just as easily as his motivation changed between DAI and Veilguard, it will be changed again at end game if you listen to deus-ex-Morrigan.
Then there are smaller things, but things that really would have been caught if someone was just paying a little bit of attention…
Like Harding and Emmrich going camping in Fereldan… which if we’re to believe the things the Inquisitor was saying about Southern Thedas, I don’t think you’re going to have a fun trip. But I’m glad they’re able to find some time for a vacation while the refugees are getting blighted all over.
Or Rook actively saying “I should talk to Varric” directly in front of characters in the lead up to end-game, and those characters choosing to completely ignore that.
Or in Neve’s companion story, Aelia deciding to interrogate the witness to the red lyrium deal right next to where it happened. She didn’t need to be in the area, she was puppetting the smuggler, and she clearly has insight into what the person is seeing and doing while puppetting them. So I guess she’s just there so we can figure out she was involved.
Or the game telling us that Anaris need Cyrian to perform rituals for him since Anaris doesn’t have a physical body to do them himself… except he apparently doesn’t because he can kill Cyrian when he disobeys. I still would like to know if Cyrian ever died originally, by the way, and if so how he’s back and seemingly normal – this game likes to answer big lore questions like it’s nothing, but they just gloss over details like this.
Or how in Emmrich’s missions, Manfred’s spirit dies and can just be brought back to life… so I guess spirits dying means nothing if they can be brought back with their memory and personality intact. So that Solas flashback where we were supposed to be appalled that spirits died? Apparently there was nothing lost there, someone just needs to revive them and they can carry on as normal.
Or how the rewrite of DAI’s ending cutscene implies that Solas killed Flemeth/Mythal… before he had the power to do so since the whole reason he has been able to do anything in this game is because he absorbed her amassed power. So Flemeth/Mythal would have to let her power go willingly since Solas should not be able to forcibly take it, but clearly, she didn’t since the dialogue we’re given is her being reluctant. Solas apparently has the power he needs to do things when the plot demands it, but also no power when the plot demands it (aka, when Rook needs to prove they’re better than him).
Or the crew making a fake Ritual dagger near end game. For no reason whatsoever. They just decided to do that knowing it would only be a prop, but they had no plans that even involved a prop at that point – so they just did this because the plot told them they had to.
And speaking of that Ritual dagger… all the old elves want that dagger for one reason of another, but they never seem to try to get it when they can, or they don’t seem too concerned when it���s not in their grip anymore. Solas doesn’t try to hold onto it after Varric gets stabbed. Elgar’nan doesn’t try to pick it up after it kills Ghilan’nain, in spite of him knowing it’s the one thing that can kill him… nope, just leave it there and peace out.
Or my personal most hated thing – Isseya and her stupid motivation making no sense.
I cannot fathom the logic of having Isseya, a warden who was forced to blight griffons, who came to resent this order as she watched the griffons go mad, made it her mission to safeguard a clutch of eggs, takes the blight from the eggs into herself while using magic to put the eggs into status, then goes off to her calling which doesn’t actually end in her death… and somehow, 400 years later, she’s decided that since those eggs have hatched and the griffons are healthy and unblighted, the thing she wanted, but they’re in the hands of wardens which she doesn’t really like, so now she’s gonna go get those griffons to blight them.
Literally doing the thing that made her so mad at the wardens. Because she wants to save the griffons from the wardens and their cruelty… by repeating it… I just… this is nonsense.
If she’s capable of articulating that she’s mad at the wardens for their cruelty to the griffons, then she shouldn’t be repeating it thinking she’s saving the griffons. If she was just keeping the griffons captive to keep them away from the wardens, then I could buy that, but adding the element of her wanting to blight them just makes this nonsensical.
Oh and never talk the First Warden down – it will make the final scenes with Isseya even worse if he tells you about the feather from her griffon and show it to her. Because I don’t even think Isseya dies in that variant of the cutscene, she just says sorry and rolls on the floor while I guess Rook and Davrin let the griffons out…
Who is Rook?
Usually, in a game like this, choices are what make us feel like an active participant in the world. It helps us build up our own character and determine how/why they behave the way they do, and also how the world around them is shaped by the consequences of those moments.
But this game feels so stripped of choice, especially choice which is any way related to morality or priorities that aren’t standard ‘Hero traits’. Rook will always do the right thing, they can’t be motivated by personal desires, excitement, monetary gain, fame, etc…. and when Rook is forced to make a choice, there is no option which would be looked at as unreasonable by companions. They might give us an approval/disapproval pop up, but it never really feels like Rook is capable of being incompatible with anyone, they will always be seen as justified in companion’s eyes. And to me, this makes Rook as the game presents them incredibly bland.
Most of Rook’s unique characterisation happens in the character creator – the game gives us minimal chances to expand or form a personality for Rook that is significantly different from any other person who plays the game. We do the heavy lifting here, we transpose qualities on Rook because the game won’t give us meaningful opportunities to do that.
And not only do I feel like the game lacks choices that would help us define Rook, it lacks decisions that make me feel like I’m having any impact on the world overall. I can defend Minrathous or I can defend Treviso… this is the one choice we make which seems to actually shape the world we play in.
And it doesn’t even come up as something Rook can regret in the sequence about regrets… Rook apparently is faced with only regrets that are the result of other people’s decisions to volunteer to do something. But the one thing where Rook actually has to actively choose something, something they are actually responsible for the suffering on the side they don’t defend… that isn’t something they can regret.
What the hell is that supposed to mean? Surely, if Rook should regret anything it should be the thing they feel direct responsibility for, no? But Rook doesn’t. Because Rook doesn’t regret anything they do, because they aren’t written with choices that they can regret since they aren’t seen as responsible for negative outcomes.
Honestly, that sequence might as well have been about mourning or sadness rather than regret, because Rook has to be upset at the loss of companions, we don’t get to influence that. But Rook isn’t regretful – that’s how they get out – but I can’t help but wonder why they didn’t then make us able to actively regret the legitimate choices we make, rather than feeling regret for our companions deciding to risk themselves.
Rook feels like an outside observer to everything that happens around them. They are the mediator, the sounding board, the magic-8-ball for decision making when companions need a push because they’re stuck. Sure, they do things, but for an RPG the way they go about things feels so linear.
And on another note… why is Rook seen as important? They start championing Varric’s cause in his absence, they want to stop the veil coming down and that starts with stopping Solas, then stopping Elgar’nan and Ghilan’nain. But to the outside observer, Rook is just some guy who says they are on an important missions, and they really need to speak with all these important leaders of factions – just trust them, I’m sure the First Warden is happy to make time for a meeting. And also the First Talon of the Crows, I’m sure they are fine with just some foreign person saying they need to meet your leader.
What I’m trying to get at is that Rook has no title, your group isn’t given any proper title or status which these people can look at and assume Rook is being truthful, trustworthy, or even worth their time. No one has any reason to hear Rook out, but in this game, they either just do, or they don’t and it’s because they’re actually a bad guy.
But Rook is no one special. They realistically shouldn’t be trusted like they are, they should absolutely be struggling to be taken seriously by others but it’s portrayed as unfair when that does happen. But they’re the protagonist, and it’s like everyone in the world simply knows that. I want Rook to struggle, I want them to grow and prove themselves, but it feels like we skip passed that to get straight to the fantasy of being in charge and considered fit for that role.
Pacing and feeling like something was missing…
The start and ending throw a lot at us and expect us to keep on running – but then the middle portion of the game suffers due to the companions putting a stop sign on the plot so you can do their companion quests. And they aren’t shy about telling you “you need to stop and do our quests or we’ll be distracted at end game”… and again, thank you game for explaining game mechanics to me.
I was going to complete character quests, because if I care about the characters of course I’m going to do that. Having to actually pause the plot and have the characters explain to you that you have to care… I don’t know how to explain this, but it immediately took me out of the fragile immersion I was trying to get into. It makes me upset with the companions for reasons I can’t put into words. Maybe it’s because in one fell swoop it made me see them as checklists to be completed instead of people I wanted to know? I’m not sure, if someone had a similar reaction to this moment and has a better explanation, I would love to be enlightened on what it is that makes me so uncomfortable about this.
But I digress, the problem here is that the plot grinds to a halt. We stop doing things which feel like we’re advancing our plan of stopping the big baddies, we just kind of patter around and make sure our companions feel ok. And most of those missions to help our companions aren’t connected to the enemy we’re facing… Aelia, Anaris, Hezenkoss, Illario, The Dragon King, Isseya – they aren’t agents of the big baddies, they are just enemies that pop up at the same time as the big baddies are around, and are therefore making the situation worse.
So yes, we’re still doing stuff, but it feels like fluff. It feels like a detour while we just hope the world doesn’t burn while we stop to go on another picnic.
This is something that happens in a lot of games, the urgency isn’t real because you can stop progressing plot to go for a long walk if you want to – but in none of the other games did it feel so blatant to me. I still felt like most of the little tasks in the interim of plot advancement were at least advancing the cause in little ways… I don’t feel that with a lot of the things that happen in the middle of the game. It just becomes about companion missions; the bad guys will wait until we sort that out, the blight will stop advancing so we can have family dinners and go for walks.
And I really don’t know how to explain this, but it feels like something is missing in how the story progresses. Like extra things were meant to be happening and they are just not there. Maybe this is another part of how the game often just tells me things that happen in scene transitions, or it’s me really wishing there were more actual plot advancing missions in the middle of the game.
This problem I think also is most evident in the romances. Veilguard seems to take its romance pacing more from the Mass Effect games than the previous Dragon Age games – and while it was acceptable in Mass Effect to have very few romance scenes, and predominantly only having one big scene which culminates at end game, but suddenly introducing it in this series makes it feel like a huge downgrade from previous instalments.
It feels like we’re missing things, we’re given banters by companions commenting on the progress of our relationship and our partner can talk about how close they feel to our Rook – we’re given the impression our relationship is strong and established midway through the game. But with how strong the characters talk, it feels like we should have experienced so many more interactions with our partner to substantiate that.
For comparisons sake, in DAI if you enter a romance prior to going to the Winter Palace, you get romantic dialogue with your partner if they’re present, you get a dance, you get to feel like you’re in a relationship as it’s developing into something deeper. You get more interactions as the game goes on, moving from spoken interest, kisses, and intimacy (in most cases). It’s a slow build, and let’s you feel the build up by giving you glimpses of each step as the relationship develops, and then letting you just experience being in the relationship.
This game feels like it gives us the bare minimum in actual content, but has characters talk about how established the relationship is. The heavy lifting is again left to us to interpret all these blank spaces and fill in how this relationship is developing. The problem isn’t inherently with what the game gives us, it's what it doesn’t.
It lets us choose a relationship in the middle of the game, then it doesn’t give us all the progression – rather it gives us the minimal amount of snippets to meet the checklist of “they express interest, they mutually agree to be in a relationship, the relationship is consummated physically”. Sure, we can continue to pick flirt/love based dialogues, but it doesn’t feel nearly as strong as the banters seem to be telling us it is. And over all, we can go a very long time between each progression point.
I love this franchise, and I so desperately wanted to like this instalment… and instead I feel hollow.

Okay I know I've made like three posts about this one specific thing but I gotta say, anyone who calls Halsin a typical boring Druid either doesn't understand Halsin or doesn't understand Druids, because Halsin is very much an atypical Druid.
Just a few ways Halsin is different than other Druids:
He can't control his wildshape. He transforms involuntarily when under stress, which is not a thing other Druids experience, and he can't control himself fully in wildshape either. He retains traits, such as an enhanced sense of smell, out of his wildshape form, and has the ability to remain as a bear borderline indefinitely, instead of Druids usually only being able to maintain the same form for a couple hours at most.
He doesn't hate undead; he views them the same as living creatures, worthy of life. He cares for Astarion deeply, and is furious if the player allows the 7,000 spawn to die. (He's a little nicer if they do it for a mercy kill instead of the ritual, but is clearly only happy when they are released into the Underdark, the exact thing a Druid is supposed to want to avoid.)
He dislikes the city because it displaces nature, yes, but he VERY rarely says that. Instead, almost every time he laments the conditions of Baldur's Gate, what distresses him is how capitalistic systems harm sentient beings- especially children. He is more upset at the human(oid) suffering he encounters in the city than he is at how it displaces nature.
Halsin is on an obviously morally good alignment. While Druids are no longer required to be neutral, most still are anyway, especially those from the Emerald Enclave, which the Emerald Grove is part of.
Emerald Enclave Druids are encouraged to sabotage society; they breed aggressive animals and place them near settlements to deter development, secretly sponsor brigands to attack new settlements, and simultaneously interact with local populations by providing sweet drinks and teas to boost their public image, so that new developments are curtailed while nearby people think the Druids are kind and harmless. Halsin very notably never even thinks about doing such things, even though it would be trivial for him to do so.
While Halsin's explanation for wanting to stop the Absolute is initially far more in line with Druidic thinking (they're unnatural, obviously), he later grows to want it finished because he wants you, the player, and your friends to be safe.
Halsin has zero desire to ladder-climb in the ranks of the Druids, nor to grow more powerful; he was perfectly happy as he was before the Shadow Curse, and is quite upset he had to waste 100 years of his life "dealing with others' problems and personalities." BUT the fact that he was happy to just that as alderman of his commune suggests the problem was with being forced into the position and being relied on as the sole authority, instead of one trusted elder of many.
Halsin wants children desperately, but was kept from having them by his leadership role. This is yet another example of how, despite his deeply held beliefs, being a Druid ultimately made him less happy.
Halsin isn't very good at leading the Druids, to the point that many of his Druids resent him, many are swayed to a cult the instant he leaves, and he himself decides the best thing he could possibly do for the Grove is leave it and have a better leader come in and take over.
Nearly every struggle Halsin has in the game arises from a conflict with his Druidic beliefs- whether it's his need to cleanse the Shadow Curse causing him to be an ineffective leader of the Grove, his desire for a family being held back by his leadership role, or his love of humanity battling against his hatred for cities as unnatural blots on nature.
Basically, nearly every character beat Halsin has comes from him not being a typical Druid at all, and in some cases, from him being rather bad at being the things Druids are supposed to be.

Hiding from the entire world for a week had been easy enough: he didn't normally use his phone much, ReAl had casually given all the players days off, and Girolan was traveling to America for an environmental conference. Tanzeku's entry into his home in Madrid had been fairly painless, and the small bed he had set up next to his had quickly become the only place where he could be left safely
From the first day the child became his responsibility, his phone had done nothing but "Immediate Full Time Babysitter" in the search bar. He had seen so many profiles in the last few days that he had learned some of them by heart, but none of them completely convinced him: they were all profiles of women with experience, at least 10 years older than him, and above all, with lives outside of their work. He didn't even know why, but these requirements made him think they weren't suitable. He thought that what he needed was a young woman, maybe younger than him, and with absolutely zero experience. If she had been like that he could have paid her less than necessary and, above all, made the whole thing less of a problem, because with zero life outside of work she could always be with Tanzeku. But most of all, he needed someone who could keep the secret of this unknown son, whose existence no one in the world was supposed to know. But no one seemed to have these requirements, at least until the day the same site recommended the profile of a girl who had just signed up, with still no possible requests from other users
Your profile had all the information he was looking for: 19 years old, needs immediate work because she just finished school and the possibility of being with the child 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Sae hadn't even seen the photos you had posted of yourself, he had directly paid the first month's salary proposed by your profile and had sent you his address
The next morning, you found yourself in front of the door of the most important penthouse of the neighborhood. You had lived in Madrid since you were a kid, and this neighborhood had always been famous for being home to the stars of the country but also of those abroad. You thought you had come to the wrong house, but when Sae Itoshi himself opened the door for you, you almost died. You had been watching his games since he joined ReAl, and now he was in front of you?
"You are Y/n? The babysitter?" the boy asks, and you look around a little confused "Umh... yeah? It's me. But I think I got the wrong house..." you say uncertainly, but he shakes his head "You didn't get the wrong house. Come in" he says, making room for you to enter. You gulp down a lump of saliva, even more confused: does he even know that you're a babysitter? Does he have kids? Maybe it's just a strange dream
But when you enter the living room of the house and see a baby less than a month old, the blood in your veins freezes. Sae notices the change in your expression, as he picks up Tanzeku "Before anything, I must warn you of the most important thing. Yes, I have a son, his name is Tanzeku. This child must remain a secret within the world" he says seriously, and you find yourself seeing the soccer player with a completely new look "A secret...?" you ask looking at the child, and he nods "A complete secret. Only you and I know about the existence of this child... apart from the mother, obviously. I need you to be with him constantly, I don't have the possibility to do that" he says coming closer and giving you the baby, which you pick up and hold gently "I don’t need you to clean the house, do chores… you’re not a maid. But you need to be this baby’s guardian angel, okay?" he says, caressing the child's cheek, who instinctively rests his head against your chest. You nod, thinking back to the whole thing "How does it work with the hours? I put 24/7 availability on the website, but we’ve never talked about it" you say, cradling the little one, and Sae nods "The penthouse is big. You can live upstairs, there’s a whole section of the house that’s unused. I’ll pay your taxes to stay here, you don’t have to worry about that" he says seriously, sitting on the sofa and looking at his son, his gaze a little dull when he thinks that he is entrusting his son's life to another person "Remember. It's a secret. Our secret from today. You got it, Y/n?" asks for the umpteenth time
"I understand. I understand everything" you say cradling Tanzeku in your arms. It's all so surprising that you don't know whether to be surprised by the fact that Sae Itoshi, the ReAl midfielder and one of the most beloved players of the entire country, has a son or by the fact that you are just a few meters away from the player and that from now on his house will also be your house. It could be the beginning of the most beautiful part of your life or your worst nightmare ever

Summary: Your first argument
You weren't really one to argue.
You didn't enjoy confrontations. You didn't like yelling.
But you knew this was where it was heading.
Talia stewed in the driver's seat all the way home, her knuckles white as she gripped the steering wheel.
This wasn't how you wanted her to find out.
You had been lucky, you think. You and Talia didn't argue. You had disagreements over silly things over when to feed the pets and whose turn it was to do the laundry.
But you knew, just by looking at the way Talia's jaw clenched that this was heading toward an argument.
You prepare yourself.
It happens almost as soon as the apartment door is closed.
"Lyon?!" She demands," Really, Lyon?!"
It wasn't the best way for Talia to find out, you can admit that. It wasn't that you were trying to keep it a secret. It was that you were told not to talk about it while the details were worked out.
You sigh. "I'm sorry but-"
"I thought you were happy here!" Talia interrupts," At Barcelona. In Spain. With me!"
"I am!"
"You're leaving!" Talia yells," You're leaving!"
"I'm not!" You snap back, hands clenching into fists as you dig your nails into your palm.
Talia scoffs. "Oh, forgive me if I'm wrong but Lyon is in France, yes?! So, yeah, y/n, you're leaving!"
"You're blowing this out of proportion!" You stand chest to chest with her.
You're practically the same height as her now so you're both yelling straight in each other's face.
(You have to concentrate as to not connect your lips to hers because it's unfair just how attractive she is while yelling).
The loan to Lyon had come out of nowhere, as was most emergency loans. It was a string of bad luck for the French team, their keepers dropping like flies until all that was left was two academy players who had never played for the senior team.
You, on the other hand, were twenty-one years old already with six years experience and a world cup win under your belt. You were a proven winner and Lyon were willing to throw an extortionate amount of money at Barcelona to get you on loan.
They offered you bonuses that was bordering on more zeros at the end of a number than you'd ever seen.
Lyon had been knocking on the door when your agent let clubs know you were leaving Arsenal. It had been a toss up between them and Barcelona.
But you chose Barcelona and they still kept knocking.
You agreed to the loan though, if only to get experience in a different league.
"If you want to leave," Talia yells," Then there's the door!"
"Oh, yeah? Well maybe I will!"
"Go on then!"
"Fine!
"Fine!"
You whistle as you make it to the door, crouching down to clip on Prins' leash before storming out into the hallway.
You choose to take the stairs instead of the elevator, working out some of your frustration on the way.
Prins' leash gets clipped onto your belt loop and you take off on a controlled jog around the neighbourhood.
Talia calls you.
You ignore it.
She call you again.
You don't want to continue this argument.
You turn off your phone.
You keep jogging, your feet pounding onto the pavement.
Prins runs next to you happily. He's always been able to keep up on your morning runs and a random afternoon run doesn't seem to faze him either.
Your mind runs just like your feet as you overthink all of your little interactions in the argument earlier. You wonder, briefly, if this means you and Talia have broken up now.
You hope not.
You're not sure how you would cope if Talia broke up with you over this.
Your running slows to a walk as you make your way to the beach. You sit on the sand and just stare out across the sea.
Prins whines a little bit, stamping his feet on the ground.
"Sorry," You say, unclipping his leash so he can run," There you go."
He doesn't though. He just whines a bit more, shuffling closer until his snout is pressed up against your face.
You smile.
"Thanks, Prins," You say, tearfully," You're a good boy."
His tail wags happily.
"He is a good boy."
You nearly burst into tears are hearing a familiar voice behind you.
"Hi, Alexia."
"Hi."
She sits down next to you and you bury your face in Prins' fur, not wanting her to see you cry.
"Nat's worried," Alexia says," She's calling everyone to see where you've gone."
"I turned off my phone. I didn't want to argue anymore."
Alexia frowns. "You argued with each other? That doesn't sound right."
"She was very angry," You whisper, turning on your phone in your pocket.
Alexia can just hear you over the roar of the sea. You've still got your head buried against Prins so your words are muffled.
"She's not angry anymore," Alexia says," She's very, very worried. You've been gone for nearly two hours."
That doesn't sound right, you think but when you fish out your phone, Alexia's right.
You've been running for nearly two hours since the argument.
"Oh."
Alexia chuckles. "Yeah, oh. You've had people looking for you. I think Nat even called your parents."
"I didn't want her to worry. I just wanted to stop arguing," You mumble.
"That's okay," Alexia assures you," But maybe you should shoot her a text telling her where you are so she doesn't worry anymore, huh?"
"Okay."
You text Talia your whereabouts.
There's silence for a long while between you both, nothing but the ocean and occasionally Prins shuffling around to get comfortable.
The sun is setting when Alexia speaks again.
"What were you arguing about?"
"I'm moving to Lyon," You say and Alexia jolts.
"What?" She asks in disbelief," Why? Does Barcelona not make you happy anymore?"
You give her an odd look. "No, it does, but staying out for one season wouldn't do any harm. Lyon has no keepers. Barcelona has two others plus that La Masia girl."
"The one that's always following you around?"
"I think it's sweet. She's good." You shrug. "I'll be back next year anyway."
"Wait..." Alexia blinks a few times. "What do you mean you'll be back next year?"
"It's only a loan," You reply," They're..." Your face goes red. "Lyon's offering the club a lot plus a bonus for me." You're sure that you resemble a tomato right now. "It's a lot of money. Enough to pay for a house in cash. Talia mentioned about maybe finding a place for ourselves."
"You want to buy Nat a house?"
"Well, I want to buy us a house." You frown. "Sorry...is it too early in a relationship to consider that? My Morsa said she was envisioning a house with Momma within the first month."
"No!" Alexia assures you," It's sweet. You're sweet, y/n, but I think there's been a bit of a misunderstanding."
You turn to look at her. "A misunderstanding? Over what?"
She doesn't get to answer because a body crashes into you and a phone is shoved into your face.
"I found her!" Talia exclaims," I've got her! I've got her!"
On the phone screen is your mothers, both pressed up against each other as they stare.
"Don't do that!" Morsa immediately jumps into a lecture. "Do you know how worried we were?! We called you so many times! We thought you were dead in a ditch!"
"I had Prins with me." It's a weak defence and you know it but you have to at least try. "He wouldn't let anything happen to me."
"Princesse, I love you but your dog is as dumb as a pile of bricks," Morsa says," But I'm glad you're okay."
"You can go to France," Talia says quickly," Not that you need my permission but if you want to go then go. I'm sorry that I yelled. If you want to leave Barcelona then go but-"
"Leave?" You repeat," I'm not leaving. I'm just going on loan."
If you weren't still a little worried about Talia breaking up with you then you'd find the shocked look on her face comical.
"What?"
"It's just a loan," You say," I...erm...They're willing to give me a lot of money for it. I thought, maybe, we could use it to get a house."
"I...You...We...You want to get a house with me?"
"I mean...er, if you want that too. I know that-"
You don't get to finish because Talia drops her phone to pull you into a kiss.
"Yes, I want to get a house with you."

Are people playing the same game I did? What do they mean "Rook has done nothing to earn Solas' loyalty"? Given what Solas did to Varric, and just the general threat Solas' plans represent, Rook is well within their rights to give zero shits about his loyalty. Why are they concerned about Rook earning Solas' loyalty to begin with? Solas wronged THEM not the other way around??? What did Rook even do? Stop the ritual? The ritual which was going to cause apocalyptic destruction? You can't blame Rook for not having all the facts. The one who does have all the facts (Solas) has been keeping them to himself. It's not Rook's fault if they only know what they've been told. What are they supposed to think given that demons are literally popping up all over the place? Solas hasn't exactly given Rook any reason to trust him. Did they forget Solas has a whole track record of being untrustworthy??? And even that considered Rook still makes plenty of effort to understand Solas? That entire quest with Solas' memories? Various companions weighing in based on their perspectives? I don't understand where they're getting this impression that Rook is some unreasonably judgemental dickhead. I'm sorry for ranting I'm just so tired of going into the VG tags and seeing people put the most unwarranted Rook hate in the main tags. How do people have the most bad faith takes about their own character? Are they role-playing them like that??
Dude, I totally get what you mean. These are all the same questions I'm asking myself every time I happen across a take like that. (Adding the link to my prev post about the take in question.)
If you'll allow me some room for pondering, my guess is just that... they are kind of roleplaying them like you say, but they're not truly roleplaying. Or better said, they're not playing the role of Rook.
I think that these people posting takes like that, they're playing as themselves, not taking up the perspective of a character within the story but looking into the story from the outside, AND they're doing so filtered through the lens of having previously also played Inquisition (and their Inquisitor) the same way.
What I think may be happening here is that the Inquisitor's (and by extension, these players') experience with Solas is, by design, drastically different from that of Rook, and many of those who have loved the character they knew Solas as for a long time (a decade at this point) find Rook's and Veilguard's perspective of him and his role in the story irreconcilable with what they know.
These players see Solas as a companion, a friend, a lover, a character who is fundamentally a protagonist in the story (regardless of the fact that Trespasser explicitly states that him achieving his goals would cause massive devastation and the end of Thedas as we know it, plus that much of the face that he showed in Inquisition, he himself admitted was either shown under false pretenses or was an outright lie), and with that being their version of the truth about him as far as they are concerned, they find conceptualizing him as an antagonist very difficult, or even impossible.
Which means that the neutral/wary attitude that Rook (a character who was written as someone who never before interacted with Solas, spent the better part of the year pursuing him with the intention of stopping him, and now has goals that are explicitly contradictory to his ultimate goal) puts them in a place where the player's point of view character is one they think of as an antagonist.
That's why they think that Rook is the one who should win Solas' trust and loyalty, that's why they're frustrated that Rook has no option to immediately believe and trust everything Solas says and prioritize helping him, and in some fringe cases, that's why they think there should have been an option to let the Veil be brought down and let Solas succeed.
Simply, I think that these people, they aren't engaging with the story as written, but they are constantly fighting against their own protagonist, which creates this sort of... I guess moral dissonance(? can I call it that?) between them, and the point of view that the game asks them to embody.
I don't know how much sense this makes (I've been microwaving this in my head for a long time, I think it may be a bit burnt at this point), but I feel like it lines up with the posts that have broken into my isolation chamber. Granted I don't purposefully engage with these types of posts and I'm pretty sure I've blocked a large chunk of the people posting this stuff, but...
I mean, to me it makes sense, lol.
It's kind of that theme of fact and truth and history changing depending on who tells it (which permeates the entire setting) seeping into the real world, and into the fandom.
That has kind of an almost poetic irony to it.

There's no such a big difference between being friends with Abby and dating Abby. It might sound good since you're already super comfortable with each other, but being friends for so long with an alpha who is a player leaves its marks.
You constantly forget you have a claim on Abby. You see other omegas look at her, smell her, and you don't remember that you are her omega, not other people - you just chuckle and do nothing about it.
Abby gets confused because she can't stop fucking glaring at other alphas - but Abby is a possessive asshole, she knew it would happen. Still, you don't act like you're a couple sometimes, and it kinda hurts.
Abby watches how once again you freeze when another omega looks at her, your scent going just a bit sour, but you still do nothing, and Abby presses down her frustration.
It hits her only after two weeks of you doing it, why you’re doing it. She realises it when you two are sitting in her living room, drinking wine and chatting, like always, and when she does, she is filled with desire to tease you.
“I have a question.” Abby asks with a cocky grin, and you roll your eyes fondly. “You know you can scent me, right?”
Your eyes go comically big before you understand what she is saying, but then you avoid looking at her - not in a bad manner, but more like you want to hide from her.
“Um. Yeah. Right.” Abby laughs kindly and tugs you so you could sit on her lap. You're clearly embarrassed by your own obliviousness, and Abby wants to tease you so bad.
“Since we're dating? And I literally told you I'm yours?” You groan and Abby laughs harder.
“I'm so used to you fucking every pretty omega you see, my mind hasn't caught up yet.” You mutter, trying to defend yourself, but Abby's pretty laugh makes you smile. “Did it upset you?”
“A little. But I knew you wouldn't be cruel like this to me, so I figured you had a different reason.”
Your heart breaks a little and you take Abby's face into your palms, staring into her pretty blue eyes, while her arms are wrapped around your back.
“I love you.” You say with all your soul.
Abby blinks, her mouth falls open. She blinks again. Then her whole face goes red. You giggle and kiss her forehead.
“Thank you.” Abby says eventually and you laugh harder.
“What kind of response is this?”
Abby blinks and buries her face in your shoulder, embarrassed.
“I love you too. And I'm thankful for your love.”
You giggle and kiss Abby, pressing closer to her as her scent envelopes both of you. Abby holds you so tightly you can't take a full breath, but you don't care, you like being close to her.
You break the kiss and very tentatively, as if you expect Abby to stop you, rub against her scent glands. Abby's fingers dig into your ass and she sighs, her voice low. The room starts smelling like arousal and Abby chuckles.
“Have you caught up on the fact that I really want to fuck you or do you need more explicit confirmation for it as well?”
Your face burns with Abby's every word, but then there's a sudden smell of anxiety that makes Abby slow down.
“We don't have to do anything if you don't want to.” She reassures you, her hand caressing your back to bring you some comfort. Abby really doesn't like being a cause for your anxiety, especially in a topic that requires trust.
“Thanks.” You sigh and cringe at yourself. You're an adult, for fuck’s sake, there's nothing to be ashamed of. “I just.” You take a longer breath. You feel humiliated - not by Abby, never by her, but by some social expectations. “Please don't be weird about it. I'm a virgin.”
Abby freezes. You watch her blank face nervously - you don't know how she'll react. You keep repeating “there's nothing to be ashamed of” over and over in your head, but you start to crumble when Abby stays silent.
“You're being weird about it.” You chuckle nervously. Abby shakes her head and smiles.
“Sorry.” She then grins like she won this life. “I know it's stupid, but it makes me happy.”
You understand what Abby is saying: she is happy you trust her with this. She is also smug as fuck, this asshole, and you don’t say anything more - you’re not going to boost her ego out of the stratosphere.
“Do you want to have sex someday?” Abby asks gently, watching your face as your scent keeps being sour. She wants to comfort you, any way she can.
“Yeah. It's not like I don't know what it is, heat really makes you creative. But I've never been with another person. I'm nervous.” You tell Abby honestly. She nods, although your scent tells her you’re more scared than nervous.
“You've never smelled of anxiety before, when I flirted with you. Is it different because now it's a real possibility?”
You take a moment to think about it, and then nod.
“Yeah. I mean, I knew I wouldn't let us have sex, and you also knew I'd regret it, so I wasn't worried when we'd make out.”
Abby hums, figuring out how to handle this conversation and make you feel safe.
“What are you nervous about?”
You take a moment to think - it's not like you haven't spent time worrying about it, but you're not with some imaginary stranger right now, you're with Abby, so you make an effort to pinpoint the exact reason.
“Doing something wrong. You know how I always have to get everything right on the first try, and I guess sex is not an exception. Plus, you have so much experience and I'd be lying if I said it doesn't make me feel insecure.”
Abby hums again, thinking about your words.
“Got it. Well, I mean- having experience is great for building confidence and seeing how diverse people can be, but when you come down to it, every person is different. Every time when I was with a new person, it was the first time all over again, except my hands didn't shake and I didn't cum in the first five minutes.”
It makes you feel better and you chuckle. You're grateful for Abby taking such care with her words.
“Do you know what I like in bed? Do I know what you like in bed? I've got some experience, but we have no experience with each other. You know, even if you weren't a virgin, I'd still be nervous too.”
You laugh at this, not being able to imagine this alpha nervous. Abby doesn't do nervous. She is hot and confident and knows what she is doing.

“You're such a sap.” You shake your head and kiss Abby, the smell of love and affection filling your noses. “Thanks. For being so patient with me.”

Lost In The Woods (And Feelings) - William Eklund
Summary: Y/n and her best friend, hockey player William, go on a week-long camping trip despite having zero experience. As the days go by, Y/n realizes she’s in love with William but believes nothing can happen between.

Camping. A full week of camping.
She and William had been best friends for years, ever since they met back in Sweden. And even after he moved to San Jose for his hockey career, they had managed to keep their friendship intact. And somehow, in between their late-night calls and playful teasing, they convinced themselves that going on a camping trip together was a brilliant idea.
It was not.
“Are you sure you know how to set up a tent?” Y/n asked, arms crossed as she watched William struggle.
“Of course,” he said confidently, before glancing at the tent bag. “I mean… how hard can it be?”
It turned out to be very hard.
“William, that’s not where the pole goes.”
“Yes, it is.”
“No, it’s not.”
“Are you a camping expert all of a sudden or what?”
“I don’t have to be an expert to know that the tent is not supposed to be collapsing,” Y/n protested, stepping back just in time to avoid being caught under the falling mess.
William groaned, rubbing a hand down his face before turning to her with his best innocent smile. “Okay, well, time for a different plan.”

After what felt like hours and with the help of YouTube tutorials, they got the tent set up. It still leaned to one side more than the other, which made Y/n secretly question its stability.
That night, they sat by the fire, eating burnt marshmallows because neither of them had the patience to cook them properly. The air was cool, stars lit up the sky above them, and for a moment, Y/n let herself pretend that this was just their life.
Just the two of them, away from everything, no worries about distance or careers or the inevitable goodbye waiting for them at the end of this trip.
“This is nice,” William said, stretching his legs out and tilting his head back to look at the stars.
Y/n hummed in agreement. “Even though we are world’s worst campers in history?”
“Especially because of that.”
She smiled, leaning her head against her knees. “I don’t think I’ve laughed this much in a long time.”
William turned his head to look at her, his expression softer than usual. “Me neither.”
The way he was looking at her made Y/n’s stomach flip, but she forced herself to push the feeling away.
As the days went by, Y/n found herself slipping into a dangerous kind of comfort.

They got lost on a hike. Twice.
"Are you sure we’re going the right way?" she asked.
"Of course I am," William said, though his eyes were filled with uncertainty.
"That’s what you said twenty minutes ago, and we ended up in the same place," Y/n pointed out.
"Fine. I’ll check the GPS - oh."
"What?"
"There’s no service."
Y/n groaned. "Great. We’re going to die out here. With no water and food."
"Relax," William said, placing his arm around her shoulder. "Worst case scenario, we have to eat berries and live in the woods forever."
"Oh, fantastic. That was totally my life plan."
He grinned. "Could be worse. At least you’re stuck with me."
And that was the problem.
The more time they spent together, the more Y/n realized she didn’t want to be stuck with anyone else.
But she also knew nothing could ever happen between them. He lived in San Jose. His life was there, his career, his future. She was in Sweden, and as much as she wanted to believe in something more, reality was much different.
On their last night, as they sat by the fire, Y/n found herself staring at the flames, lost in thoughts.
William nudged her gently. “You okay?”

“About?”
She hesitated before answering. “How things are going to go back to normal after this. You’ll go back to San Jose, I’ll stay in Sweden…”

He shrugged, but there was something careful about the way he asked. “Anywhere.”

Well, we've got a collection of system neutral micro-settings called Odd Jobs - it's eleven small and fascinating worlds to play games in, each with a campaign you can play through in a month. They're not designed for any particular system, so you can play them with whatever game you like!
Oh, and it won the 2022 UK Games Expo award for Best Adventure and was nominated for Ennie Product of the Year. Just sayin'.
We've just released a tarot-themed magical river game called Upriver, Downriver with our dear friend Ella Watts, in which you play the crew of a ship sailing the Great River, either travelling upriver to the mythical Source with it's magic and revelation; or downriver towards the unending Sea with it's freedom and horizon.

We have KER-SPLAT! - a high-chaos, full nonsense cartoon RPG we wrote with Ross Barlow, where the players can't die and the GM can't stop them in a hilarious cascade of silly jokes. Also, not to brag, but this is the funniest RPG rulebook you'll ever read.
We also have smaller games, such as Zero Void - a no-prep one-shot zine game, where you play a bunch of desperate space criminals trying to escape a space station before the law arrives.

I’ve been sitting here still thinking about Veilguard and how it’s sort of an amalgamation of previous games while not understanding why things worked in those games, which leads to those pieces not working for Veilguard. Namely talking about the Factions, the “loyalty missions,” and the world-ending “choice.” As a disclaimer, I understand the development hell that was this production and the issues faced going from single-player to multi-player and then back to single-player, but I still feel like the root of these issues stem from the writing, so take this how you will.
Slight spoilers for Veilguard as a whole, Veilguard companion quests (Taas and Davrin), and the endings of Veilguard, Mass Effect 2, and Mass Effect 3.
First up the Factions for Veilguard
To me, this feels like an attempt to be reminiscent of the Origins in Dragon Age: Origins but without understanding why those Origins worked and, more importantly, what they were intended to do. In Origins, the origin prologue was a way for you as the player to develop your character, see how they lived and their “everyday life,” and how/why they got recruited into the Grey Wardens by Duncan. In short, they are a way to show how your character gets involved in the main plot and shows how their worldview is (or could be) shaped by their lived experiences. In addition, it gives you the player the chance to determine and roleplay exactly how your character feels about the recruitment and the Grey Wardens entirely, not to mention how they react to the world at large.
In Veilguard, the Factions are sort of your origins, but ultimately, they’re just window dressing. You get some different armor and minor skills/bonuses, but that’s about it. Rook is not connected to the main plot in any way at all, except being recruited by Varric off screen. There’s no roleplaying element here because no matter your background, you are effectively kicked out of your faction before the start of the game for “going against orders” and you have absolutely zero chance to explore how Rook feels about this recruitment into Varric’s team because it’s not on screen. It’s all off screen or in the briefest of dialogues but you can’t actually roleplay because they’re all pre-determined dialogue scenes.
These factions feel more like the backstories from Inquisition (which I felt were lacking) but at least in Inquisition, I could create whatever backstory I wanted for my Inquisitor because it didn’t really come up in any way—which is both a positive and a negative. In Veilguard, your backstory doesn’t come up very often at all, has no bearing on the plot or even how people react to you or any recruitment mission, which is similar to Inquisition, but you also have a Rook that is pre-determined with a specific personality, which is a huge problem in a role playing game. Literally, no matter what dialogue option you choose, Rook basically says the exact same thing except maybe adds a little joke or an awkward silence. So there’s no real roleplaying opportunity for them at all, at any point. There’s absolutely nothing to be gained or learned about your character or the world at large within your faction. Which leads into the main questions of this game for me: Why is Rook leading this team? They don’t have more experience than Harding, they’re clearly not a senior member of the organization since we spend a good portion of the first act recruiting the “better” people from each faction, and there’s nothing really to explain why Varric recruited them and then passed the leadership on to them, which is their only connection the main plot. Yes, there’s a story he tells about when they met and how he assumed Rook was going to be someone Solas didn’t see coming, but telling me that doesn’t help me connect to this character and how/why they’re here right now. (We’re not going to touch on how it makes absolutely zero sense for Varric to be leading this team in the first place 10 years after Inquisition… because it doesn’t and it does just feel like a desperate grab for interest, but that’s another post).
Now to go one step further, your Origin actually changed how some of the quests in the main story played out based on your Warden’s connection to those places. If you played as a Mage Amell, going back to the circle tower or running into Jowan again is very different than if you were a Noble Human Cousland. A Dalish Elf Mahariel creates a very different interaction with the Dalish elves than City Elf Tabris, and vice versa as a Tabris in the Denerim Alienage. The world and the characters react to you differently based on your connection to the plot and setting. In Veilguard, there’s none of that. Yeah, there’s a few lines of dialogue, but there’s no connection at all. Why couldn’t my Rook be the person to suggest recruiting someone from my faction? Crow!Rook saying they should talk to the Dellamortes because while the Demon of Vyrantium is dead, they had to know his training methods to kill mages and that would come in handy for a crow!Rook. Warden!Rook being the one to reach out to Antione and Evka as the premier blight experts and they suggest talking to Davrin. Mournwatch!Rook being the one to suggest going to talk to Professor Emmrich Volkarin because he is the person who knows the most about the fade right after they wake up and realize they are in the fade itself. Or a Lord of Fortune Rook realizing that the lyrium dagger is missing and their Lords would either already have it or know where it’s at, therefore the ones brining the Lords into the fold. It’s just really weird that not only does your backstory not affect the plot or your character at all, but then you have Bellara, Harding, and Neve being the ones to suggest and reaching out to the faction you’re apart of and would actually know more than they do. It’s just one thing that they could have done to make it seem like Rook has at least some connection to the world here, but they didn’t do that.
The Loyalty Missions
The fact that the entire second act basically is loyalty missions is… not good. For anyone who hasn’t played the Mass Effect games, this set up is clearly taken from Mass Effect 2’s structure, which is still highly praised as the best Mass Effect game (even if I disagree but that’s not the point here). In Mass Effect 2, the entire premise of the game is Shepherd (your character) gathering a team to take along on a potential suicide mission to another galaxy where they don’t know what they’re going to encounter or find. And because of the reality of this potentially being the end for them, the companions all have loose ends they’d like to tie up—setting up their child for success, saving a father’s legacy, destroying a place where you were tortured, etc. They’re not world-shattering quests or stakes, but they’re all very personal and it’s really down to your play-through and how you want to play your Shepherd. You can be someone who genuinely cares about your companions and is happy to help them settle these final affairs or someone who is annoyed at the fact you are helping them but are doing it anyways. Or you can decide to skip some or all of them, without knowing how or if they will affect anything down the line. (Though it’s not hard to figure out that they are clearly going to have some effect.) Plus just completing the loyalty missions isn’t enough to guarantee your companion’s loyalty—you have to complete it a certain way and/or pass certain dialogue checks along the way. In Veilguard the entire game comes to halt to say “it’s time to care about these companions” while the quests are just triggered by certain quests in act 2 being completed and not through any connection or relationship increase between them and Rook. But for that you’d have needed the ability to actually talk to the companions which the devs behind this game didn’t want to do.
Now for the loyalty missions themselves, I actually don’t necessarily think they all needed to tie to the overarching plot and in theory, it’s fine that they’re personal problems. What’s not fine, is that you basically recruit the best-of-the-best (supposedly) and then they tell you that they can’t focus cause they’ve got stuff on their mind. That honestly makes me question why I recruited them in the first place. The only person I can really understand this idea from is Lucanis as he’s literally been tortured for a year and then continues to torture himself with no sleep, and perhaps whoever’s city was destroyed, but that’s not why anyone’s distracted. And it’s literally every single companion. They literally even have one of the companions tell you directly in case you missed it that “It’s time to stop focusing on the Blighted Elven Gods destroying the world because we have things on our mind and we can’t focus.” Um… the world’s literally being destroyed, the South has been nuked essentially, but sure, let’s stop everything so we can focus on your thing when the world itself might literally not be there when we finish. Again, it just makes me question why I recruited these people in the first place then if they can’t focus on the massive task at hand and the literal world-ending situation they’re in.
And the narration from Varric after every companion recruitment and some missions that basically tells you that something bad is going to happen to them later so you have to pay attention and do their quests is beyond annoying. This is the first Bioware game where I instantly liked all the companions upon meeting them—though Harding quickly started to grate on me as the walking information-dump from Inquisition that wasn’t utilized very well. The point is, I liked all the companions initially, so I was always going to do their loyalty missions. But it just feels like the game kept telling me that it’s important that I care about them, but I don’t actually get to learn about them. (Not being able to talk to the companions is actually the #1 biggest problem in this game for me) We have no conversations, no real discoveries, nothing to be gained. It’s just solving a problem for them and then we move on.
Apart from the set-up, the misstep Veilguard took with these loyalty missions is forgetting that the stakes are very very different in this game. In ME2, the big fight you’re building up to is at the end as well, but it is completely up to you when you decide to go to it because you are actually going to the Collector’s homeworld / galaxy and taking the fight to them so you have time to get yourself and your team and your ship prepared for it. There’s not really a ticking clock or massive devastation and destruction going on in the background, so majority of your quests are recruitment and then loyalty missions, but it works because ME2 is almost entirely focused on the companions and your connection to them.
In Veilguard, the world is literally being destroyed the entire time of the game. The Ancient Blighted Elven Gods escaped the veil prison and have been wreaking havoc on the world at large and deploying blight everywhere. People are literally dying the entire time, and yet the game comes to a screeching halt to tell you it’s time to do the companion missions all the while the world isn’t going to stop being destroyed while I do these missions. So it feels really strange to stop and focus on them—especially when they all sort of have the exact same layout/progression and they’re really not tied to the main story in any way and not really meant to give us more depth or insight into these characters really either. And the fact that every single mission ends with a binary choice that is up to Rook feels… off putting. For me as a player, I didn’t feel like my Rook was qualified at all to make any of these decisions because I was essentially making them for my companions, companions I didn’t feel like I knew very well and didn’t know why they were asking me.
For example, look at the difference between The Iron Bull and Taash. In Inquisition, you have a mission with the Iron Bull where his people have set up an alliance with the Qunari. But while you’re there fighting the venatori, The Iron Bull’s mercenary company is attacked and he’s left with the choice—let his company die to preserve the Qunari alliance or save his company and ruin the alliance between the Inquisition and the Qunari. He looks to the Inquisitor in this moment because they are the leader of the Inquisition, they have the most to lose here if this alliance doesn’t go through. Not to mention, by this point in the story you have spent time with the Iron Bull and have had enough conversations with him (and approval) to trigger this quest in the first place. So you should already know some of his issues surrounding his struggle with identity and his loyalty to the Qun and his company. So it makes sense that he looks to the Inquisitor and follows their lead because he knows it’s not really up to him because it’s bigger than him or his company. Taash, on the other hand, in a very early conversation basically asks Rook whether they should be more Qunari or Rivani… which is not really an appropriate thing to ask, especially for a Rook who is neither. Not to mention, this whole thing goes directly against Taash’s gender identity discovery of being nonbinary which happened right before this conversation! So to immediately follow that up with a binary choice when there isn’t a need to be either/or and they should feel free to discover and keep whatever parts of each culture they want, is poor writing. (And the fact there isn’t really a need to have this be a binary choice in the first place). In a better comparison, look at Davrin’s final choice of what to do with the Griffins. At least with him asking Rook, he basically makes it clear that he can’t really be objective here and so he’s asking Rook—someone he’s been ride or die with since recruitment—to make the decision for him. This is the only decision in the game where it’s placed on Rook because it’s made clear that Davrin doesn’t think he can be objective in this case and wants to try and make the best choice for the griffins and not be influenced by anything outside that. It’s still not great, but it is the only companion choice for Rook that makes sense and feels in character with what little we know of Davrin.
Not to mention, the loyalty missions don’t really give you any time to roleplay or really discover anything more about Rook because they are always a kind-hearted therapist to all of them. So there’s no tension between them and any of the companions, or even among the companions themselves. If they wanted things to come to a halt, have the animosity between some companions be the reason why things went sour at Weishaupt and it’s why we need to sort this stuff out now because they can’t afford to let their personal feelings get in the way of things. And most importantly, let Rook be the one to say that! Let Rook take charge because after playing the entire game, I’m still unclear why Rook was leading because they made next to no decisions, there’s nothing to indicate they were better skilled or more suited than any of the other companions, and obviously no real connection to the main plot apart from Solas I guess being in their head? But even that is the weakest reason.
World-Ending Choices
So for me, the end game is clearly from ME2 and ME3. You have the assigning companions to certain tasks they will be suited for and hopefully loyal so they can survive from Mass Effect 2—literally almost the exact same thing except the mechanics are slightly different. In ME2, you have to not only send a companion who is adept at this certain task, but is also the best option—of which you usually only have 1-2 and when you have up to 12 possible squadmates the choice can be incredibly tough to narrow down—they also have to be loyal to you and the cause, aka you must have completed their loyalty mission in a way that assures their loyalty. So it’s multi-layered because not only can the ill-equipped member die, but they can actually cause a different teammate to die if they’re in the wrong task. In Veilguard, it seems that so long as their loyal, they have a pretty good shot at surviving no matter the task. (Though I’m still researching this). But even if they fail, the only stakes are that that specific companion dies. It’s not like if we send someone ill-suited to help Morrigan she dies as well, therefore locking you out of the redemption ending with Mythal. Or the person who’s meant to take down the robot thing fails and the robot ends up taking out the entire group fighting it, causing that entire group to be slaughtered and the rest of their members to flee or something. In ME2, you could theoretically lose every single person with you not because you failed to do their loyalty missions, but because you also failed to upgrade the ship or assigned the wrong person. It’s just a much better implemented system than the half-baked piece in Veilguard, while Veilguard continually bragged about massive changes and consequences but… it’s really just which companions might die and that has no effect on anything later down the line.
And the final 3 choices are obviously from Mass Effect 3 and the final decision regarding the Reapers. Now that was not well-liked and I myself don’t love it, but that’s mostly because the game itself is trying to force me into the Synthetic Green ending which feels incredibly invasive and I hate that it’s the “good ending.” Which sort is what Veilguard is trying to do by saying that the “Resolution and Redemption” ending is the best but… the endings don’t hit the way they do in ME3 because they’re all the same. In the Mass Effect trilogy, you spend three games playing as Shepherd, so you know them pretty well and their personality (ignoring the Renegade character assassination in ME3 in some aspects of the story). When you finally get to the end, you know your Shepherd is likely going to their death to try and save the galaxy, so having the final choice boil down to sort of “how is my Shepherd going to die” is huge for the character, as well as the world they leave behind. The way you choose to destroy the Reapers does have massive implications and complications for the galaxy at large and how they might survive going forward.
In Veilguard, there’s only the illusion of choice, because it will always end up with Solas using his life essence to hold up the veil, which… is confusing but okay. (Not to mention a massive massive copout that the late game twist is “the veil is tied to the Ancient Elven Gods” instead of giving any real consequences or discussion to the Veil conundrum). Your “choices” are basically to trick Solas, fight him and force him into the Veil, or giving him redemption to choose to do it himself? But since those are always the same thing, it’s not a choice. (Which is the theme of the entire game honestly). So again, using the mechanics of a beloved game—though wild they chose to implement that ending idea in an arguably worse way—without understanding the reasons behind the use of those choices in ME3 and why they worked for that game (at least theoretically).
I could go no but I think I need to stop here because my brain is mush right now. But there’s just so much to talk about in this game and it’s not necessarily a good thing.

Something ive noticed about a lot of people who play dnd (myself included) is that… they arent really playing dnd.
I don’t mean that in the - they’ve homebrewed the system to the point where they are basically playing a completely different game. i mean it in the way that dnd is less of a game and more of a tool or frame work to tell improve stories with friends. Thats why so many tables have a significant amount of homebrew rules or play it loose with the rules - because dnd is secondary to the act of telling a story.
Unfortunately, dnd wasn’t built for such a narratively focused sandbox. It was built around dungeons and adventuring and violence in general - an aspect that is only a fraction of many stories that dnd is used to tell.
I think that is why so many people are resistant from trying other ttrpg systems that may give them a better player experience. They dont play dnd to play dnd but they dont even realize that. The game is secondary so why does it matter what game they play? Everyone at their table is already versed in dnd so they can make it work as a framework even if its trying to fit a square peg into a round hole.
This is something ive been thinking about a lot while making my ttrpg Tales from the Aether as I am inspecting my own view and experience with dnd and what i enjoy about it versus what could be done better. Why do me and my friends play dnd? To hang out and tell stories. Dnd happens to be the system i knew at the time we started and thus it is the one we used. But there is nothing particular about dnd that supports this goal while there are many things that hold us back - such as characters archetypes and classes being so ridged and having practically zero guidance for running the game outside of combat or adventuring. This is where homebrew comes in.
Ironically thats the entire premise of Tales from the Aether. I started making it years ago with the idea that this system is specifically a framework for people to tell improve stories with friends. That is the whole point. All of the mechanics revolve around giving players the tools to do what they want while the rules act more as a form of in universe world building (like a hard magic system) than actual rules.
The reason why so many people who play dnd are hesitant or straight up refuse to try out other ttrpgs is because the game is secondary. Its a tool. Its a framework that they can build off of to create the experience that they want. Its familiar so they know how to bend it, what parts to chip off or expand, to give them what they want. A new ttrpg, even if its one that gives them everything they want in a ttrpg, is unfamiliar and thus not worth investing in when they already have something that works well enough.
Idk i may be way off base here but from my own experience and from watching live plays and reading people’s takes on dnd and playing the game… thats kinda the conclusion ive come to.

Two Ways to Adjust the Egg Life System
So, since the Eggs ran away in September and lived for weeks free of tasks and lives, and after they survived Purgatory while doing zero tasks, and after the three newer eggs survived for seemingly their entire lives without tasks or lives, a lot of people- both fans and creators and egg admins- have been complaining about the Egg Life System and how bullshit it is in terms of both player experience and the island’s established lore. It’s an outdated system that isn’t fun for anybody involved, and it should be properly updated for the new year.
Eggs have been the QSMP’s lifeblood since when they were first introduced in April. They were initially an event then, but they soon developed into actual people with actual personalities that both the audience and the players all became ridiculously attached to.
Eggs are given to new players to give them someone to hang out with when they’re alone on the server, and they exist for that purpose for everybody else, too.
So, if that’s the case… why the fuck can they still permadie? When lore itself showed that they don’t need to do tasks, and when players like the Korean members or like Roier or Bad would be completely alone on the server without the eggs keeping them company, it really begs the question of whether or not it’s possible to still have the eggs at risk while not explicitly killing them.
And so I present a couple of ways to adapt the Egg System to the QSMP 2024 while still allowing the eggs to be put at risk and while still having consequences for risky behavior and while still keeping the cookie system in place because, really, that’s a decent way of doing the tasks.
1. Hospitalization
Post-Purgatory, it was revealed that there’s an Egg Hospital. And it really would make sense for the server’s hyper capitalist second season to keep the hospital, and to use it the American Way.
When an egg goes down and “dies”, the egg respawns like a player would. But the egg respawns in the Egg Hospital at Spawn, and the parents have to pay a hefty fee for their eggs’ health.
The server already makes everybody collect coins and go into debt, so why not apply that to the eggs?
The fee the parents would have to pay would be ridiculous, like maybe 10k coins. Any coins they get from bounties would go to that and not to their own pockets, but the egg would still be alive. Every time the egg dies, the fee would increase regardless of whether or not the parents paid it off the last time.
So an egg has infinite lives, but the eggs and their parents are still punished for deaths. It keeps the parents from being able to buy necessities like warps or things from the Spawn Shops.
Egg Tasks are completed in exchange for Cookie Coupons, which allow the purchase of one cookie per coupon free of any monetary charge. In an emergency, parents can add to their debt by buying cookies outright. This way, eggs still get to do tasks while the parents are paying their debt.
Is this system harsh? Yeah, but so are permadeaths. This system just switches the deaths out for American-style medical debt that will ruin the parents financially should they ‘allow’ their eggs to die.
2. Repossession
Since the start of QSMP2024, the bunny employees have been trying to buy the eggs from their parents. Why not adapt that?
If an egg dies under this system, the parents receive a Strike from the Federation. After two Strikes, the egg is taken from their parents by a bunny social worker to live with the Federation until the parents can prove they’re a “good parent.”
The parents do this by taking paid parenthood classes taught by the Federation that would cost maybe 500 coins per class (coming to a total cost of 3,500 coins.) After a week of classes, the parents get their kids back.
The classes would basically be a bunny worker showing up at the parent’s home and making them do egg tasks for the bunny instead, maybe for ten minutes per day, showing that the parents can still take care of their eggs and that they aren’t neglectful or anything.
Furthermore, before the parents get their eggs back, they have to build a room specifically for their eggs if they don’t have one built already, and that room must be inspected by the bunny social worker. Parents have to show that they have food prepared for the egg. They have to have a set of armor prepared for the egg, and a sword and pickax. They have to have at least one toy or egg cosmetic purchased and waiting for the egg in the egg’s new room.
Once all this is done, after a week, the eggs get to come back, and their Strikes are reset.
This isn’t too bad, but 3,500 coins is a lot of money for a lot of players, and having to do all these chores and not having their eggs around punishes both the players and the eggs the same way a permadeath would. It’s just that this doesn’t include the egg dying, it includes a new form of Egg Trauma.

I just think there are ways to mess with the players and the audience without killing the eggs off, that’s all.
These systems I have proposed accommodate for server lag and general unpreparedness, such as not having good enough armor or going into a dungeon without backup.

AITA for entertaining a friendship with a child?
okay so this might be a weird one or even a controversial one i honestly have zero clue how other people will receive this, apologies in advance if i ramble!
to begin, i (23ftm) and this kid (15f) first met about a year ago. one of my best friends (23m) is a pretty big model and tiktoker and she was a fan of his, and she was pretty recognized online for making cool edits and stuff of him and coming to meetups etcetera, so he knew of her from there, and over time with always seeing each other at meet ups and her being in his discord server (where i mod) she kind of became pretty well known to us.
an important thing to note is that she's SUPER neurodivergent and she's had a really tough life. she lost her older brother a few years back and she's (i'm not sure of the correct way to put it, her family is originally from the netherlands and their english is kind of in the works so this is how they put it) developmentally behind a few years - her parents describe this as her being "mentally more 13 than 15" but her behaviour to me is even younger than that. she's very very innocent and trusting, very overemotional and sensitive to criticism etc, loves stuffed animals and pink and cartoons and all of that. she's told me she feels like a little kid sometimes and will talk/act like one so maybe there's an element of trauma-rooted age regression there, i'm not super sure - i'm not gonna get into detail but she's talked to me about her life a lot and she's had some pretty fucked up shit happen to her.
from the beginning she pretty much imprinted on me - she's told me before i remind her of the big brother she lost, and ever since then she's called me her "big brother" and "family" etc. at first i was more just playing along with it to make her happy but over time she really has become something like a little sister to me, i feel super protective of her. i want to become a teacher after college (not to mention eventually a parent with my fiancee) so i think at least part of it is that taking a kid 'under my wing' so to speak is giving me experience with it all. i've always been kinda paternal/protective over kids in general but i was the youngest sibling in my family so i never really had anyone to utilise that on before
she does rely super heavily on me emotionally, especially because after i found out she was being bullied pretty badly at school i started dropping by to keep her company during breaks/lunch and making sure shit was okay (which her still-living brother used to do, but he's a famous?? - unsure How famous, i don't know sports at all - footballer/soccer player who's often in another country and can't see her often anymore), and i've been working with her to curb that. i'm actually currently working with her parents to find her a good therapist and support system. she's no longer in the tiktok friend's discord just because it was getting a little all-consuming for her and we encouraged her to take a break, but she's done a TON of work on herself and maturing since then and she does plan to rejoin at some point soon.
however, i find it really really hard to gauge whether being so close with a child is... like normal? or not. i honestly can't tell if it's kind of the internet caution about adults talking to minors kind of warping my brain and making me overly wary of what people will think or if i'm doing something wrong or if it's genuinely like a weird situation, so i guess i'm looking for outside perspectives.
the things that make me question it is that like i said she's very 'mentally young', she's very sheltered, and there definitely seems to be an element of her kind of replacing the older brother figure she lost with me. on top of that, we met through her being a fan of my friend, and though she's now separate from that i worry there could still be an element of power there because i'm close with the guy she calls her idol. her family knows me and seem totally chill with everything, but they've told me she tells people at her school that i'm literally her brother and basically 100% talks about me as if i'm her biological family, which i find super sweet but at the same time wonder if it's healthy.
she obviously needs therapy and hopefully soon we can get her it, but: AITA for entertaining a sort of found family dynamic / friendship at all with someone very vulnerable and young or is this genuinely helpful for her?

Okay, hi!! Question...how does hockey work?? I followed you because of f1, but obviously you sometimes talk about hockey and I would love to understand. It sounds interesting and I talked to a girl at uni once who liked hockey. however, you ARE right in time for playoff hockey, which is an absolutely unparalleled experience. even in years where i don’t follow the regular season at all, my ass is always tuning in for playoffs. playoff hockey is almost an entirely different sport when it comes to energy and intensity and spectacle. it really is like nothing else out there; players play through multiple broken bones and other heinous injuries, ships will be forged in fire, other ships will be burned to the ground never to recover. no one comes out of the playoffs unscathed, even if you manage to make it to the end and your team is the one hoisting the cup.
i’m not entirely sure if you want me to explain the structure of the sport itself or gameplay specifically, but i am who i am, so under the cut you are going to find way more fucking information than you bargained for. without further ado:
HOCKEY: HOW DOES IT WORK?
the league
the nhl is made up of 32 teams. there are two conferences, east and west, and then each conference is further subdivided into regional divisions. some of these make more geographical sense than others.

in the west you have the pacific (red) and central (blue) divisions, and in the east we’ve got atlantic (orange) and metropolitan (green). ignore that this is out of date. pour one out for arizona, all my homies think the kachina logo is the sickest logo of all time, nobody cares about the utah hockey club. i am sorry if you care about the utah hockey club.
regular season hockey starts in october and then runs until april. there are 82 games in a season. cross-conference teams play each other twice, once at home and once away. the remaining games are focused within a team’s own conference and division, with a team playing the most games against their specific division. it usually shakes out to something like 21-24 games against conference rivals and 26-29 against division rivals, depending the division itself (certain divisions have more teams than others).
teams earn points based off of results of individual games. a win is two points whether it’s in regulation or overtime, an overtime loss earns you one point, and a regulation loss is zero points. if you’re looking at a team’s record, 1-2-3 would be 1. wins 2. losses 3. overtime losses. points matter for the purposes of playoff position, which we will get into later.
the game
hockey games consist of three twenty-minute periods, with a twenty minute intermission in between each period. between tv time-outs and stoppages in play, you can expect the average game to last approximately two and a half hours, give or take.
the objective: get the puck into the net. the team with the most goals wins. you just gotta get pucks in deep, man.
each team plays 20 players per game, typically 12 forwards, 6 defenseman, and 2 goalies. there are 6 players per team allowed on the ice at a time (5 skaters and a goalie). if a team has more than 20 active players (they almost all do), someone is getting scratched.
skaters consist of forwards and defensemen. forwards come in lines of 3: left wing, center, and right wing. d-men come in pairs. some coaches are known for changing up lines all the time whereas some lines are sacrosanct; it really depends on the team and their style of play. some players are more versatile, but typically a player’s position would be the same even if the lines get shuffled i.e. a center will center regardless of who is on their wing. you’ll hear the phrase “two-way player” for players who are good at both offense and defense, like defensemen who are also known for scoring goals, or forwards who have solid defensive sense.
you’ve got a goalie and a backup goalie dressed out in case something happens to your goalie. then there’s the emergency backup, who is literally usually Just Some Guy, so it’s is always REAL fun when they need to be called in because some real shit had to go down for that to happen.
hockey shifts are short, with typically only about 45 seconds on the ice before you go back to the bench. line changes are fluid and dynamic and happen during active gameplay, so sometimes people forget to count, and that’s how you end up with with a too many men penalty. which brings us to PENALTIES!
players who do crimes are sent to the naughty box to reflect on their wrongdoings. there are small crimes and big crimes.
minor penalties are 2 minutes, and include but are not limited to:
hooking - using your stick like a big ol’ hook to prevent a player from making a play (You Can’t Do That)
spearing - using your stick to stab someone
high-sticking - lifting your stick above shoulder-height (this is usually called when someone gets whacked in the face)
slashing - swinging your stick at someone like a bat
cross-checking - using your stick when body checking
boarding - checking a player dangerously into the boards (you see this a lot when people get pushed into the boards head-first)
roughing - not QUITE fighting, but getting a little too up close and personal with an opponent
tripping, elbowing, holding - exactly what you think it is
there are more. you get the idea.
a penalty that results in drawing blood from an opposing player will result in a double-minor, which is why you will often see players checking for blood when they are whacked in the face. for your suffering, you get twice as much time on the power play!
the power play is when you are on a man-advantage. when the offending player is in the penalty box, the team on the penalty kill only has four players on the ice instead of five. this is where special teams come into play—instead of your regular forward lines and defensive pairings, power plays and penalty kills often shuffle the players who play together to maximize the advantage or minimize the damage.
6-on-3 is technically highest man-advantage a team could have. where did the extra offensive player come from? well, you are technically allowed to pull your goalie and play another skater, which is a high-risk high-reward tactic that is usually only done in the waning minutes of the third period in a last-ditch attempt to tie a game and force overtime. you get an extra attacker, but now your net is empty and left wide-open. this is not stressful at all.
5-on-4 is the most typical power play, but you’ll also see 5-on-3 and 4-on-4 and 4-on-3 etc etc. if a team has more than two players in the penalty box they will still play three skaters, but the options of skaters they get to choose from is reduced because the offending players are in time-out repenting for their sins. sometimes there are abject shenanigans and you end up with scenes like this

whenever the team on the power play scores, the penalty is over because justice has been served. UNLESS it’s a major penalty.
major penalties are 5 minutes and you stay on the power play for all 5 minutes regardless of how many times you score. these are typically for more egregious offenses; any minor penalty can be upgraded to a major penalty if it was deemed to be done with the intent to injure another player. aside from that, fighting is the main reason you will see a five minute major. if a player is issued a game misconduct and is ejected from the game, another player will sit the penalty for them (there are also bench minors/administrative penalties where someone will be designated to serve on behalf of the team. or if things get weird and your goalie gets a penalty.)
fighting is… complicated. not technically encouraged anymore, but it’s something i’m not sure the sport will ever eradicate entirely. it is, however you feel about it, one of the things that makes hockey hockey. a lot of times, if a fight is evenly matched and instigated from both sides, you’ll just get offsetting penalties for the players fighting without either team going on the man-advantage. this basically just lets those dudes cool off without punishing either team when both sides are equally culpable. you really only see major fighting penalties called if it’s particularly violent, or if one dude is just wailing on someone who isn’t giving anything back. you get offset penalties or 4-on-4 matched roughing calls more often than anything, in my experience.
now as far as gameplay goes, the main two things that you need to know are icing and offsides, so let’s talk about what all those lines on the ice mean. have this fun diagram i found on google. if you want to know what the fuck is the deal with the circles and the hash marks idk man DM me, i’m not going into alla dat right now.
notably though this does remind me that the attacking and defending zones alternate between periods. in the first and third period, your attacking zone is on the opposite side of the ice as your bench. in the second period, you attack on the same side as your bench, which in theory gives you a little bit of an offensive advantage as you have to cover less ground during line changes. whether this always shakes out in reality is debatable.
anyway, icing is when a team in their defensive zone launches the puck to the other side of the ice before one of their players passes the center line, and then the puck passes the opposing team’s red line without being touched by another player. this prevents a team from just yeeting the puck outside of active play. icing is waived whenever a team is on the penalty kill, and it’s the primary line of defense for killing a penalty.
sometimes you will see a goalie come out to play a puck that would otherwise be iced just for rhythm of play, and the team that didn’t ice the puck can also choose to waive the icing if they don’t want the whistle. sometimes having to do a faceoff might kill the groove you’re in, and you just want to keep the puck in play.
offsides relates to going into your attacking zone. a player is not allowed to enter their attacking zone until the puck passes the blue line FIRST. even if just half of their foot crosses the line before the puck, that is considered offsides and the play is whistled dead. you will get a lot of slo-mo replays for this when a team thinks a goal was scored on an offside play, because after review it will get called no-goal.
related to offsides: if you are in your zone and the puck then gets cleared of the blue line, all of your players have to leave the zone before re-entering.
the goalie crease refers to the space that a goalie is allowed to play where other players are prevented from making “unnecessary contact” lest they get called for goalie interference. what counts as goalie interference, you might ask? nobody fucking knows <3
the goalie CAN leave their crease. some goalies do it a lot more than others, usually just to clear a puck or keep possession on a line change. however i hate when goalies wander too far, like please just stay in your home.
god. what else do you need to know. this post is already so fucking long. checking is a defensive tactic to use your body, typically the hip or the shoulder, to try to separate another player from the puck. crucially, they gotta have the puck to be able to legally check them. your skates cannot leave the ice when checking—picking up speed into a check can get you called for charging. checking is the most common cause of injury, but there’s nothing more fucking beautiful in this world than when when of your guys lands a massive, perfectly timed legal check.
forecheck and backcheck refer to where checking is occurred. forecheck is in your offensive zone, applying pressure to the opposing team to try to force a turnover. backcheck is when you lose the puck and chase after the opposing team into your defensive zone to try to get that shit outta there.
there is a TON of slang and terminology in hockey. if you are watching a game and they say something and you’re like “what in the actual fuck does that mean” just google it bro. soon you will be talking about dirty dangles and greasy goals with the rest of us. here’s a good glossary if you want one.
okay. so you sort of understand how a game is played. if a game is tied at the end of regulation time, you go to overtime. during the regular season, overtime is 5 minutes of 3-on-3 sudden death play. if the game is still tied at the end of five minutes, it goes to a shootout.
during the playoffs, you basically get an entire extra period of 5-on-5 sudden death hockey. you keep playing until someone scores. if no one scores after 20 minutes, you go to intermission and then you start again. yes, this is exactly as stressful as it sounds, and i still have trauma flashbacks to the 5OT tbl v cbj game in 2020 (over NINETY MINUTES of overtime. the game lasted like six hours. they had to reschedule other games. i lost years of my life).
so, speaking of, let’s get into
the playoffs
only 16 teams advance to the playoffs, so this is where a team’s standing comes into play. the top three teams from each division will automatically clinch a playoff spot, and then each conference has two wildcard spots that the team with the next-most points earns regardless of division. this helps balance out the fact that some divisions are stacked and some divisions are… not so good, depending on the year.
yes, this means that you could in theory have a team with a much better record lose out on a playoff spot than a worse team the next conference over. shit happens.
playoffs typically start mid to late april and run until early june. there are four rounds, and it’s a best of seven format. the first team to four wins advances to the next round. there is nothing like the desperation of a game 7, when both teams are playing for their life. it’s all or nothing!!!!
here is an example of a starting bracket with this year’s standings (subject to change, since there are still a handful of regular season games left)

by the time a team makes it to the cup final, they’ve been through a grueling, weeks-long process of playing the fastest paced and most physical hockey of their lives with hardly any breaks. the team with the best regular season record doesn’t always make it this far. at this point, it doesn’t matter how skilled you are. it’s all about survival. it’s about endurance, and being the last team standing. injuries are absolutely something that come into play here, and sometimes the luck just isn’t on your side.
since i’m a bolts bitch, let’s take the 18-19 season for example: tampa tied the all time league record for regular season wins with a 62-16-4 season, and then they proceeded to get swept by a wildcard team in the first round. that’s hockey, baby. shit fucking happens. i’m definitely not still bitter about it.
but again, i do legitimately think the stanley cup playoffs are the pinnacle of all sporting events ever. truly some most must be experienced to be believed things you will ever see. if you watch playoff hockey and you’re not into it, then this sport is probably not for you because it doesn’t get any better.
