One thing that always confused me about newsies is how literally to quote Pulitzer: all but ONE got away.
And I just don’t agree. While yes I get that is a tragedy in Jack being able to save everyone but one of the ones he needed the most I much prefer the far more realistic point: there weren’t all that many people coming out of that.
They were against, as phrased by David: the goons, an entire army, dozens of goons and the cops, and-
He got cut off, implying there was much more because he was ramping up to a whole list. There were literally dozens of grown men against a group of unruly street kids. And fun fact! Guns had been invented by then and cops did carry them.
I just don’t see how it’s possible they all got out
I think there were dozens of kids taken to the refuge, others shot and beaten to death on the streets with the injured soon to follow. Those who were injured crawling and limping out of newsies square to die in an alley or weeks later due to sicknesses and infections gained.
For the first time there are more beds than children in the Manhattan lodging house and when they have a bath for those who managed to make it back the water is still warm and clean by the last kid.
#newsies#let them get hurt and die#it’s a lot darker than cannon but if we are being reall here…#they are so tragic#I love them#David and Les staying at the Lodge for the night because they can’t walk home without crumpling in an alley tighter and joining the others#the others having all died in alleyways alone and scared#also I just love the HC that this all happens in winter to make it worse#and that’s why Spot didn’t send Brooklyn because they are all vulnerable in winter#fansies#newsies fandom
