The Final Chapter
A review – well, sort of – of Chris Fowler’s WORD MONKEY.
There are books that you never want to end. Sometimes it’s because of the thrilling plot; or the fantastic world of the story; or that the central characters are so engaging that it’s hard to say goodbye. Whatever the reason, it has taken me a very long time to reach the end of my old friend’s final book. Not because it was dull – quite the reverse; it may be the finest, funniest, most sincere, the wisest thing he has ever written – but because I didn’t want to reach the final chapter.
This is the memoir Chris Fowler always spoke of writing. The first instalment, PAPERBOY, was the story of his childhood; a life dominated by books, films and comics in a working-class household where no-one understood his passion. The second chapter, FILM FREAK, was the account of a young, ambitious gay man at the start of his career, obsessed with the movies, desperately seeking work in a collapsing industry. The third, WORD MONKEY, was to be the story of a successful career in books, his advice to budding writers, his thoughts on the industry, all presented with the same joie-de-vivre, keen observation, hilarious wisdom and lightness of touch that characterized the previous two. And it is – it’s all those things, and more. More, because it’s also the tale of the final chapter in a life, the last pages of which I read in real time against the backdrop of the pandemic and everything that came with it, including Chris’ diagnosis with terminal cancer and his final, dazzling flare of creativity before the end.
Before I go on, some context. Chris and I were friends a long time – over 30 years, in fact. It began with a letter I wrote as a very new author, thanking him for my only review. From there it developed into a regular correspondence (I still have a stack of those letters, many of them detailing things that later appeared in the books, always funny and generous, and illustrated with little cartoons); and then a growing friendship. We were different in many ways, but we shared a love of books and films, and it was in Chris’ nature to help other writers whenever he could. He saw the rise of my career from teacher to bestselling novelist. He was there at my highest and lowest points. He found me my first proper agent. His company did the advertising campaign for the movie of CHOCOLAT. When he moved from Kentish Town to King’s Cross, I bought a pied-à-terre down the road, and we met up whenever I was in town, usually for a breakfast that would go on till lunchtime.
At the beginning of lockdown, both of us were diagnosed with cancer. They found mine early. His, too late. Over the next three years I tried to come to terms with his terminal diagnosis. I didn’t really believe in it; he was still so full of life, so upbeat, so creative. We corresponded by e-mail and text from our respective chemo chairs; he told me funny stories about his life and his doctors. When lockdown ended, we met up again for our usual breakfasts in King’s Cross. I think I expected to see a change; but he looked and sounded just the same; and he was still writing furiously. In December 2022 he finished editing his memoir; by then he was unable to leave the flat, and I went to see him at home for the last time. I didn’t know it would be the last time, of course, but it’s rare to know these things as they happen. He was getting frail by then, but mostly he was just the same; clever and funny and cheery and filled with stories and book recommendations and accounts of obscure European films that I absolutely had to watch. And he was still writing furiously; short stories, blog posts, tweets, even a new Bryant and May book (he joked that it would have to be a short one). I told him I loved him. He said it back. That was the last time I saw him, although our correspondence went on right up till the end, in March, just weeks from his 70th birthday.
I still find it hard to believe he’s gone. His voice is still so clear in my mind. And I still see him all over King’s Cross; in bookshops and theatres and cinemas. In the comics and record shops we visited together; in countless breakfast places. And it’s here, in this book, the final chapter of a life well lived, a quite extraordinary life, crowned with achievements (which he typically downplays) and filled with humour and stories. It’s all here, and it’s wonderful, and it fills me with admiration at the talent of the writer, as well as the courage of a man who can take something as bleak as a terminal cancer diagnosis, and work it into something like this; a celebration; joyous, true and filled with unflinching insight.
I don’t know why I feel surprised. I always knew how good he was. But this is more than just a dazzling piece of writing. It’s a testament to the power of words; a reminder that through them, you can shine even beyond that darkness; that life is short, and love is long; and stories can live forever. This is why we write, after all; to push away the shadows. To connect with each other across the years. To celebrate what brings us joy; to prove that we are not alone. So read this book, and read the rest of this astonishing trilogy. And be inspired – as writers, as readers – by the boy who dreamed of the stars, and learned to live forever.

One Year
TW: Talk of Suicide, Suicidal Ideation, That Whole Jazz just really heavy shit.
About a year ago today I made an attempt on my life. I had notes written out, I had planned the entire thing out and I didn’t tell anyone. I didn’t think that anyone would take me seriously or like. Care. In the past, when I expressed how upset I was about things, I got laughed at a lot or I was ignored, especially by my parents who refused to understand the gravity of what was going on. I genuinely felt like nobody actually wanted me around and everyone would be a lot happier without me in their life. I just didn’t want to be alone anymore, and I wanted to stop being a burden to everyone I met.
After it happened, I tried to reach out to a lot of people to at least get my mind off of it or to not be so lonely, but nobody was around (granted, it was like incredibly early morning). I have vivid memories of sitting on the tile by myself at 2 am that night, and every now and then I’m haunted by that feeling. I don’t bother leaving my room past 1 or 2am if I can help it.
It’s really tough thinking about that. So, I think what I actually want to do is talk about what I was able to do in this year after I survived.
I made some friends
I quit the team with the coach who was abusing me.
I got to spend an entire semester acting my heart out. I never got to be on the stage before.
I tried Harissa Chicken.
I had an apple. I forgot how much I loved them.
I tried Chicken Bacon Ranch Pizza for the first time. It might be my new favorite pizza.
I tried ganache and Pho for the first time. I also tried chicken parm sandwiches, chicken pesto mozzarella sandwiches and had my first panini.
I made and rigged my own vtuber model from scratch.
I was invited to my first party and did a group cosplay with my friends (FNAF, I was Bonnie)
I started roleplaying and playing Minecraft again.
I learned I’m actually a pretty decent builder… and I have a sculk curse.
I got back into voice acting.
I fell in love with drawing again.
I got my first ever true commission.
I really fell in love with vtubers. Hololive Advent and Hoshimachi Suisei really just hits different.
I learned how to make pizza from scratch.
I switched my minor to double major in Biology and Psychology.
I had the most fun job ever as a pancake chef. They dubbed me the Pancake Queen.
My coworker would talk all shift about memes, internet drama and vtubers with me.
I learned how to make an omelette. And pumpkin pies.
I learned coconut flour is not good for pies.
I got to plan and participate in so many fun Minecraft events.
I learned how to edit audio and edit videos.
I conducted my own research project.
I swam for the first time in years.
I was part of a true stage production for the first time.
Tried out Mario Kart for the first time!
I got to climb a belltower.
I had a birthday party. I turned 22. I never thought I would make it that far.
I went back to the hospital. Wahoo.
I made gnocchi for my irls for the first time from scratch. (They loved it)
My mentors hugged me and told me that they always believed in me. One offered to write me a letter of recommendation anywhere I went.
I showed my friend my favorite anime. I got to watch more anime with more friends.
I picked up my cap and gown.
I dressed fancy for an event and Phthalo offered we throw our own dance party in our room when there was no seating for us.
A neuroscientist praised my research and scientific mind.
I wore pins of my friends on my gown for graduation. I wore my favorite green dress.
I got to graduate from college. I walked the stage for the first time. (My friends cheered for me. Phthalo was there with me. He said he was proud of me).
I got to visit a True Crime Museum. I got to learn more about forensics
An IHOP we went to gave me a very doctored up milkshake to celebrate my graduation.
I got to meet up with family friends again. They treated me like one of their own.
I felt loved.
My mom gave me clover cookies.
I got invited to a swimming pool party.
I went to visit my Grandparents. They took me on stage and I felt my dreams spark back to life again.
I coached a baseball team for an entire season.
I coached my first solo softball lesson.
I watched Hololive English Justice debut. ERB and her past life is the reason I started acting in the first place.
I held a duckling. It fell asleep in my hands.
I got my hair cut. It finally looks like something a bit more like I want it to be.
I learned more dance choreography. I realized I really love dancing.
I submitted my research paper for publication.
I have been able to read some tweets in Japanese now. The QSMP taught me I can read some Spanish and Portuguese.
Got my passport lol
Laughed so hard I cried for the first time in years.
I ate ice cream with my friends.
I did Art Fight for the first time this year!
I signed up for my first ever gift exchange.
I got invited to my first ever DND campaign. I have always dreamed of being in one.
I showed a friend my written works. I’m inspired to write more for the first time in years.
I found a reason to wake up every morning.
I allowed myself to dream for the future again.
I still to this day credit Phthalo for saving my life. He is my MVP forever. And I thank people for being so chill with me. It’s nice to not feel so alone even if it’s just for a little bit. I am definitely not healthy by any means, but I think that where I am is a lot better than where I was.
I don’t have anything else much to say. I guess if you read this far, thanks for listening. Jury’s still out but I’d say at least some of it was worth it.
Tldr: I lived bitch.

The journey of getting back my academic spark
I'm currently working on my Master's thesis in Bioinformatics and completely lost my spark. What do I mean by that? Over the last year, I have found my place. My nice in the science community but more importantly the nice I want to work in for the rest of my life. I'm only 24, or already 24 depending on the perspective, but I am so certain that I, in fact, found MY place. Until it was taken away from me, leaving me bitter, alone, and empty.
disclaimer: English is not my first language. I'm really sorry for any spelling and grammatical mistakes. Please don't be too harsh on that.
I've been working on my thesis for about a year now. After I finished all classes in February I even decided to carry on a project I'd started during a class in my free time. Just continuing to work for a prof (unpaid and unofficial) because I loved it so much and still saw so many cool things within this project. Also since February, I've worked really intensely on my Thesis including weekly meetings with my supervisor. No break since the summer of 2023. And I loved it. I loved it so much. Most days I woke up, turned on my notebook during the first morning coffee and started working. Small breaks for daily life stuff and working till early morning. Sleep and wake up early to continue working. No weekends. No holidays. Working genuinely brought me joy. It was like my own little safe space. When I tried to hunt down bugs in my code nothing else mattered. And the moments when hours or even days of troubleshooting finally paid off are indescribable. This is MY thing. I thought about these projects while showering, walking the dogs, and sitting on the train. Nothing else mattered. I call that my spark. Both Profs I've worked closer with always said they admired the joy I bring to work. And both independently brought up the possibility of doing a PhD. I previously never thought that would be an option for me. Like yes, I love my work but I'm not good enough. Or am I? I dared to dream about it. Maybe only maybe this could be something for me. I was even more motivated. Motivated by promises of being allowed to do what I love so much and even get paid for it. Promises of being good enough. Constantly getting praised for my work. My supervisor was even telling me that he was concerned that I worked too much. That I never seem to be proud of my work. That it's never good enough for me. Other Master students in the department told me how my profs praised me in front of them too. This was the point where I started to hate it. I stopped believing them whenever they told me my work was good. But I continued to do my best. Not believing their feedback. Just doing the absolute most because I genuinely started to think I could actually get a PhD position. If I just get better maybe I would be good enough for a position there. Still getting so much joy from my work. I did everything for the possibility of being allowed to continue it. Well jokes on me. Now the students that started with me are finishing their thesis. Sending out applications for PhD positions. And I? Well I sit here feeling nothing but disgust when I think about work. Every time I try to start the same words echo through my head. 'I would love to let you sign a contract right now but I just hired 4 other students', 'I would immediately offer you a position but my contract doesn't allow it', 'There is no founding left', 'I don't know why I didn't think about you for this position'. Yeah me neither. But I guess there was no point cause I was already doing the work for free. Now I'm sitting here, nowhere near finishing my Thesis. He wants to add more to it. Make it worth publishing. I get that. But I feel like my time is running out. I get more empty promises. 'I will write you a letter of recommendation and send it next week.' That was over a month ago. 'I will talk to a pi and schedule a meeting. You would fit perfectly in that team.' He never mentioned it again. I think I still love my work. But I'm disgusted by it. I know that every email I send, and every result I present, will get praised endlessly. It makes me sick. They have to lie to me. If I were that good I wouldn't be the only one left behind. Always an afterthought.
I honestly don’t think they have any ill intent. Especially my thesis supervisor. I really could not wish for anyone better than him! He’s super understanding and supportive. He’s the one concerned for me. I think he just forgets about some promises. He doesn’t deserve to have a student who doesn’t feel joy for their work anymore.
It starts to really affect my mental health. I don't feel joy anymore. I am just really empty. And I want to change that. I have to change that. I will try to document my journey here. Even if nobody reads that. Maybe one day a student stumbles across these words and feels seen. And maybe, just maybe, they will be able to read a story of overcoming these struggles and get to a happy end. To my happy end. And maybe that can give someone hope. Take away the feeling of being alone with these struggles. Also maybe I can hold myself accountable with this. I have to work through this down to post about my progress. I have not lost hope yet. I can get my spark back. I have to get my spark back. I will feel this joy again when working. I am not giving up yet

🤩/😔/😍/🎁!! (The one about a specific character is for Moocho, of course)
Love you lots, friend!!! I hope today is going well for you :)
Thank you for the ask!!!
🤩 - a WIP snippet about or with dialogue from Moocho! My beloved <333
A small woman, with Moocho’s dark hair and eyes stepped out. “Hi, Mom,” Moocho said quietly and suddenly they were hugging, his mom’s grip was fierce for all that she lacked her son’s stature. Moocho squeezed back, trying to pour every ounce of ache for missing her into it. And then, as quickly as the hug had begun, it stopped, Moocho’s mother stepping back with an easy grin. “It’s been too long,” she said, and Moocho hadn’t realized how much he missed her voice. “I know. I’m sorry."
AHHHHHHHHHHH. Moocho's mom my beloved <333333
😔 - published lines or a section of a fic that was super sad, angsty, or difficult to write?
This is from This head is a hospital, someone please tend to it.
Eventually, she heard the front door open. That would be Milligan. She was glad he was home, but she was also not sure she wanted to talk to him right now. No doubt one of the other adults was going to tell him what had happened at dinner any minute now, and he would want to see her. Kate really didn’t want him to worry about her, to know just how much she was hurting. She also felt a little ashamed, if she was being honest with herself. Kate wasn’t supposed to be the emotional one, Kate didn’t break down crying to the point of having to miss meals, that wasn’t her. With a sigh, Kate buried her face into her pillow and waited for the inevitable.
Waiting for the inevitable "being told on" (not really but that's how it feels) is. not fun dkjfjasdflk (guy who managed to get upset in class pretty much always the week of parent-teacher conferences and was always just. waiting afterwords to see if it had been mentioned). This entire fic was also very sad and angsty to write. It was surprisingly not too difficult to write I just needed to get it out of my brain <3
😍 - published lines or a section of a fic that you loved writing?
So I loved writing the entirety of Return Address. But in the interest of not just posting the entire fic again, I will say this bit:
But years passed, and Moocho darned tents and costumes, learned embroidery stitches, baked pies for the rest of the circus. He met a little girl, so full of life, and found himself looking after her, in quiet ways (she was too independent to accept anything else, and Moocho’s heart broke for her every time she insisted on doing something herself, all of seven years old). He comforted her after a fall left her arms and legs scraped up and bleeding, holding her hand while the circus medic patched her up and thought “maybe someday, maybe this,” and then shook the thought away as Kate jumped up and ran off, seemingly back to her regular cheerful mood.
Moocho <3333 "Maybe someday, maybe this" absolutely destroyed me when I wrote it. Also the part when Moocho's letter to his mom has a return address because they're safe now.
🎁- name a published gift fic someone has given you that you love and can't recommend enough (be sure to tag the author. Or if you don't have an AO3 or haven't been gifted a fic, what kind of fic would you like to be gifted?)
I haven't been gifted a fic, I think I would cry (/positive) if someone did dklfajdlksa. As for what kind of fic, I don't think I would have preferences really. Like, angst and fluff are both so good ahhhhhh. <33333

For the writer ask meme
48, 43,37, and 30 please!
30 - Have you ever written something that was out of your comfort zone? If so, what was it, and how did it affect your approach to writing fic thereafter?
The one I wrote for you for the Society pirate fic exchange, actually! The Gentleman PI!
I tried to start it off as a Death In Paradise AU to try and hit as many of your sweet-spots as I could (I am not ashamed by this blatant currying of favour), but very quickly realised that I have never written anything in the detective genre and also have not written or watched much of it, either, so I came up with the title (with which I am still inordinately pleased) and a vague "some crime's happening!" plot brick on which to build something.
I actually had such a great time writing it, because I haven't had to THINK about a plot in that kind of way before, and it was really nice to stretch some muscles I've never used before. I don't know if it's changed my approach more generally, but I will definitely try to do a bit more reading/watching of examples of the genre if I end up writing anything I'm unfamiliar with again.
37 - Promote one of your own “deep cut” fics (an underrated one, or one that never got as much traction as you think it deserves!). What do you like about it?
I've already answered this one here <3
43 - If you take/write prompts: what’s your favorite prompt fic that you’ve written?
I am always happy to take prompts, but have mainly received them via gift exchanges. I think my favourite one is the one we did for the very first Society exchange, way back when, from @ilthit, who asked for "Childermass is on a diplomatic mission to a fairy court and is assigned a human slave valet who happens to be Lascelles, maybe Lascelles gets a kind of revenge by forcing Childermass to wash and shampoo and wear nice clothes for the court." and which became the bonds are sharp but sweet-smelling.
It was so much fun to write, especially as I had never really written Childercelles before, and it was great getting my teeth into that meaty dynamic, as well as playing around with all the strangeness of a fairy court.
48 - What’s the last fic you read? Do you recommend it?
It was this very cute and short In & Out OFMD AU: That three-letter word, and was perfect for lying in bed trying to convince myself to get up reading. Very sweet and very cute with a wonderfully panicky identity crisis Stede, and also reminded me that I need to rewatch that film because I ADORED it as a child.
Thank you friend these were so fun!!
Questions for fic writers!

(NOT a social media post, just a bit of a self writing thing of what stasias up to)
taking a deep breath to try and hold in her cursed energy, stasia stands outside a pokemon language research facility, and holding a weathered, old book made of homemade paper tied together with rope, she enters.
Without looking up from her desk, the receptionist greets her with "Yes yes, give me a minute, in the middle of something." She replies, playing tetris on her computer.
Stasia would then stay still, for around 30 minutes while she got distracted by her tetris streak.
"……….uh-"
"JESUS." the receptionist yells out, clearly not expecting to be interupted. "okay, sorry startled me… what can i do for yoooouuuuuuuuu….." She says, clearly taken aback by her disheveled, intimidating appearance and sheer height.
"Which direction to the people researching pokemon language or whatever? I figured it out countless years ago and realized you'd all probably be interested."
The receptionist just stares with a bewildered expression, and blinks.
"……….Do you… have an appointment…?"
"…Whats that?"
"…Its… when you schedule a time for a meeting."
"Oh. I didnt think i'd need to do that uh."
"…I'll have to ask you to leave."
"…I have a letter of recommendation from professor Kukui?" She replies before handing it over, which the receptionist confusingly takes, skims over, and hands it back. Being a receptionist, this is just her dayjob, and she doesn't even know who professor Kukui is, so she just presses a button on her intercom and…
"…Professor davidson? A lady with important research is apparently here to see you."
"…Down the hall to my right, take the third door down."
"Alright, thanks miss." Stasia replies, before taking the wrong way, realizing her mistake, then spinning on her heel to go the right direction.
After entering the room, Stasia is met with odd stares, and someone glancing to a security guard, who looks just as confused, and just shrugs.
Without a word, Stasia drops down her massive, handmade pokemon language guide onto the table with a loud THUD, shaking the room just a little.
"…Heard you were researching pokemon language or some shit? I figured it out forever ago, and thought i'd bring you it." She replies, blunt, which only earns an amused, smug grin from one of the researchers.
"…Okay, okay. before i even pretend to be amused by this, answer me this. With intelligent pokemon, why can't we justask them for their lang-" And Stasia, not being amused interupts.
"Because its such an inborn ability of theirs its difficult to explain. It's like explaining how to breath to a creature without lungs. Do you want the answer to your struggles or not. Because I know more than you." The researcher just stared wide eyed, before turning, a bit annoyed, to his collegues.
"…Which of you put this homeless woman up to this? you KNOW we can't tell anyone about our findings yet-" He blurted out, much to the dismay of his incredibly confused coworkers.
"LOOK dumbass, i've lived in the woods all my life with pokemon. They dont have a language in the way we do. They dont communicate with words, they communicate with patterns, syllables, tone, volume, pitch. If you're having trouble understanding an outside view has a better understanding than a chucklefuck like you, then i'll dumb it down. Pokemon use effectively the most complicated version of morse code there is to communicate. It's why they can communicate even with some being only able to say "pi pikachu," or "zor, zoroark" With them all staring at stasia, mouth agape, she follows up with… "…So do you want me to teach you, and show you my guide, or should i leave and find some other person to help publi-"
"WE'LL TAKE IT." One of the scientists says, speaking for everyone.

I don't get the opportunity to write these guides often enough as a journalist and I'm constantly astounded by how many people fall for blatant scams so here is your general guide to scams and phishing. Share it with your friends and family or something idk but too few people know these things and everyone should.
The first thing you should always remember is to stay calm and not panic. If you receive a threatening email, message, dm or phone call or even letter, calm down, take a step back and immediately regard it as suspicious. Email about you being hacked and them claiming they will release sensitive information about you unless you pay them? Suspicious! Dm about your account being terminated because it goes against user guidelines? Suspicious! Email, letter, text or call about how your account is in arrears or you've broken a law and are facing a fine, arrest, eviction or your utilities getting cut off? Immediately suspicious.
The next step is to contact support through the appropriate channels to check if the threat is real, and what the next steps are if it is. It's also important to know through which channels these things are officially communicated, how these processes typically work and what your rights are.
Social media and app support can be contacted through the support function on their official websites. The police, municipal accounts department, court, licensing department and if eviction is being threatened a lawyer through their official communication channels, often a number. For police you'll want to use the non-emergency number of your local station, but the rest you just call up the number for the department and the switchboard will put you through to the right person to talk to.
Your rights regarding these things vary according to where you are, but generally you cannot be evicted without notice for accounts in arrears, your utilities cannot be cut off without notice for accounts in arrears, fines are issued through mail with the official stationary and postage, Google what that would look like where you are, and you also have a notice period for these, and if you broke a criminal law you would be arrested with a warrant and given a date to appear in court. You would not be notified that there is a warrant out for your arrest through a text message.
Notice periods for eviction and utilities also differ from place to place, but generally both need a court order to be enforceable, and at the very least the notice period is 14 days. You will never receive account details to pay the fine, utilities or rent into in the mail, or if you do compare it to the account you typically pay them into to make sure they are exactly the same before giving them a cent, and only after you've confirmed that it is a real notice. Generally I would recommend paying fines at the physical offices they're issued from, paying utilities at the physical branch of the municipality and paying rent to your usual estate agent or landlord, not a surprise third party, no matter how convincing they are about estate transfers etc.
A private investigator isn't licensed in most places to do debt collection, and you pay them a total based on the hourly rate they have after services rendered. If they require a deposit find another investigator. If they claim to render services they aren't licensed to render, and you can look up what a pi license encompasses where you're at online, do not give them a cent.
Debt collection is handled through small claims court under a certain amount, they will send a licensed debt collector to acquire your funds on your behalf, and above that threshold amount you should not be lending out if you are not a licensed credit provider. You will get slapped with hefty fines and taxation in most places, and it's just stupid and irresponsible because you don't have loss insurance like a licensed credit provider does. Find out what your small claims court threshold is.
Social media account action will be communicated in-app by the platform using push notifications, and/or email from the official support email. This can be tricky to identify, so I'll try to give a general enough example. Say your tiktok account (or any social media) is about to be banned because it goes against user guidelines. You will receive a push notification telling you that you are facing account action and what content needs to be rectified to avoid this, or that you have surpassed the number of strikes on your profile and will be disabled effective immediately. At this point you will no longer have access to your account, or if you do you won't have access to posting or commenting functions.
This push notification will not appear as a dm asking you to click a link to appeal this decision. It will not be a regular notification. On tiktok it will fall under the account notifications bar, which is the one that you get with the "withdrawal limit updated" and "your report status" notifications. Most other social media apps send you an email using the official support email address, which you can Google and compare letter for letter. They will also never ask you to follow a link to appeal the decision. They will tell you to contact support, go find the support email on the official website do not use the one provided in the email, even if it's the correct one rather be safe than sorry.
If you receive a dm informing you that your account will be shut down if you do not appeal it by following a link, report it as phishing or the equivalent option in-app and DO NOT FOLLOW THE LINK! If you receive a dm from someone you've talked to in the past asking you to follow a link, whether it be because they supposedly accidentally reported your account or want a free gift from temu or won a competition and need to share the link with x amount of people to claim it, let them know on a separate platform that they have been hacked and/or scammed. Do not open the link.
Http links are generally not safe to use, https links are generally safe to use, if it's a recognizable link check for typos that's a spoof link, corporate links are dot com (.com), government links are dot gov dot country code (.gov.za), npo and ngo links are dot org dot country code or just dot org (.org.za or .org), academic links are dot ac dot country code (.ac.za), or dot edu (.edu), if the end of your link does not match the rest regard it as suspicious. For example if a supposed government link does not end in dot gov dot country (.gov.za) it is not an official government address and can not be trusted. Regard dot io, dot bitly, etc. As suspicious always, unless you are willing to properly learn about these web codes and investigate links individually.
Emails are a little bit more wishy washy, but generally if it is not a domained outlook email regard it as suspicious. If you get [email protected] emails be wary. Most companies and organizations with the power to disable accounts, issue fines, disconnect utilities etc. Have an email domain, typically run through outlook. It is a professional standard and very very few places don't have it in place.
Government and municipal emails will look like "[email protected]", corporate emails will look like "[email protected]" and ngos will follow the same formula but end in ".org.CountryCode" or ".org" alone. Again, check for typos that is a spoof account, and for smaller ngos or businesses gmail is still a possibility, so check their official website or social media to confirm. Capital letters here are for easier reading but they are no longer required for emails and rarely will you see an email with capital letters anymore.
And finally, online shopping. If you're buying from an established online store with no established quality track record, look for photo reviews and negative reviews. Buying on wish? If you don't see a review with a photo attached regard it as a fake listing. Buying on Amazon, temu, Etsy etc? Check for negative reviews and see what they say about the product. Take their word as gospel. If you're buying from Craigslist, gumtree, Instagram or tiktok shop, etc do not trust anyone. Do not pay for the item unless you have physically held it in your hands. Do not pay a deposit to hold the item. There are plenty of small businesses that can be trusted in this regard, but there are also too many "small businesses" that take the money and run.
If a listing seems too good to be true it is. If you see a 30k usd car on Facebook marketplace for 10k and it looks new with no notes indicating work that needs to be done, high mileage etc, that is not a real car you will lose 10 thousand dollars. Smaller things too if you see a 3k cordless drill for 700 you will lose 700 bucks. There are real bargains out there, buy them when you've physically held them in your hands and checked their quality, functionality and age. Otherwise do not trust them.
If you're a small business and any of the above advice would negatively impact your business, it is time to consider legitimizing your business by getting a domain, using reputable portals to sell your goods and engage in product or service quality enaurance strategies. Use your social media marketing to market, and to prove the quality of your products or services. People are more likely to trust you if you show them exactly what goes into making or rendering your products and services, and having the correct domains registered will also protect you down the line.
Be safe out there and don't get caught! Scammers are getting smarter every day so you have to too.
