Feb. 14: Favorite ship/OTP
This is the easiest question you could’ve ever asked.
There’s no contest.
DAISUKE & KEN
Tumblr media
Maybe Definitely Soulmates
Look at the pretty image compilation by @/reliablejoukido.
Considering I’ve talked extensively about Daiken on multiple occasions, as have many others, I’ll try to keep this short and simple.
So.
The Important Parts
Daisuke and Ken were literally designed as complements. I mentioned this in one of my earlier posts, but 02 is composed of Odd Couples and Daisuke and Ken are the Red Oni and Blue Oni specifically. Their personalities, as well as their physical appearances, were designed to complement each other.
Jogress evolution requires the partners to understand each other on a deep, spiritual level, but no one--not even Taichi and Yamato--does so with as much depth as Daisuke and Ken. Seriously, they hear each other’s heartbeats. They’re the only Jogress partners to experience that, and it doesn’t help that Jogress sounds remarkably like sex--and it’d be pretty damn funny if it worked the other way too.
They work in perfect sync, even before they’re proper friends. This is why their Jogress comes so easily to them and why they become such good friends.
Even when he’s the Kaiser, Ken hyper-focuses on Daisuke in a way that is very foe yay. He is particularly interested in defeating him specifically; the others matter far less.
Daisuke has a crush the moment he meets Ken, and he is unreasonably happy that the great Ichijouji Ken remembers his name.
Once Ken becomes good, Daisuke is the one who believes in him and invites him to join the team, even though the others aren’t on board yet. Ken isn’t ready to join them yet because he doesn’t think he deserves their forgiveness, but Daisuke’s unwavering faith in him is an essential part of his healing process.
Daisuke understood Ken’s kindness the moment he touched the Digimental of Miracles. But even after he joins the team, everyone else is continually surprised by Ken and continually underestimates him. Meanwhile, Daisuke’s just sitting over here going, “But wait, he’s always been like this!”
And it works both ways...
Ken understands Daisuke on a fundamental level as well, and he believes in him in a way none of the others ever do. He understands that Daisuke is a team player above all else, and he never thinks Daisuke is stupid or selfish or simple.
When Ken struggles, Daisuke is the one who can always get through to him. This is, of course, because of their deep connection. He talks him down from what is essentially suicide, and he gives him the strength to fight the darkness and defeat Demon.
But Ken helps Daisuke too, even though it’s not shown as explicitly. It’s pretty obvious that Daisuke has low self-esteem, especially at the beginning of the show. He has no real friends and doesn’t even really understand what friendship means. It’s not until Ken that he really begins to mellow out and properly understand what it means to be a friend, and Ken’s complete faith in him is definitely good for his self-esteem.
Daisuke functions entirely as Ken’s knight in shining armor, and when Ken goes with Oikawa and gets his Dark Seed scanned to put in the kidnapped children, he calls for Daisuke’s aid before his own Digimon partner’s. And when Ken and Wormmon are stuck in Tamachi without the ability to evolve because of the Dark Towers, Daisuke forsakes all other duties to go help him.
Ken is Daisuke’s weak spot. Throughout the show, Daisuke remains strong and confident despite his issues, but the moment Ken starts to break down, Daisuke practically begs him to stop because he won’t be able to be strong and defeat BelialVamdemon if Ken falls apart.
They literally stay up at night thinking about each other. Think about that.
Daisuke is very obviously bisexual. Ken’s sexuality is far less obvious because he’s a subtle person, but the blushing is pretty telling.
Just the way they look at each other in general. It doesn’t get cuter than this. In fact, they’re constantly looking at each other in the promo art as well.
All of these pictures. Just look at them.
They have the cutest Christmas duet ever. Seriously, listen to it and read the lyrics.
Literally all of Diablomon Strikes Back. It’s just a giant Daiken marathon, and it’s the most beautiful thing.
Okay, and as a final note, one of the most important things is how Daisuke and Ken refer to each other throughout the series. This video does a great job summing it up, but basically, it’s this:
Daisuke is not big on honorifics in general and only uses them for Ken before he knows that he’s the Kaiser. Even after Ken’s good, he calls him Ichijouji, no honorifics, and it isn’t that long before he just switches to plain Ken. And that’s a big deal. Using someone’s first name without applying an honorific requires a deep, intimate relationship, though some younger people are less likely to use honorifics in general these days.
As for Ken, he’s much more formal than Daisuke, and for the longest time, he refers to him as Motomiya-kun. After a while, he drops the honorific and just refers to him as Motomiya, even though he refers to all the other Chosen Children by their first names (with honorifics). This shows that Daisuke is a special case--he uses his family name in a sort of act of reverence, he’s being respectful. And when Ken finally does call Daisuke by his first name (without honorifics, though he continues to use them with everyone else), it is decidedly more meaningful. But even after he calls him Daisuke, he reserves that for when they are in private and continues to call him Motomiya in front of other people. That is one hell of a distinction.
And yeah...
I said I was going to keep this short and then I didn’t.
So...sorry?
I guess I’ll finish up by promoing a few things:
I have a series of posts about my enormous Daiken playlist that goes into even more detail than this.
We have a Daiken Discord server if you wanna join.
And I write Daiken fanfiction on AO3.
Because.
Let’s be real, Digimon has always been about the Goggle Boy and his Emo Boyfriend. That’s it. That’s the show.

The Fluff: Ultra Beasts, Ultra Space, Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon
Hello, my dear PUCLonians! A warm welcome back to The Fluff, and thank you for waiting during my little summer hiatus. Now that Autumn is almost upon us, the release of Ultra Sun and Moon looms ever closer, but still our knowledge of these games is extremely scarce, to say the least.
Many wise people on the Internet have pointed out that this is very normal for the third version/sequels in a Generation, but the contrast with the deluge of spoilers we got for Sun and Moon is staggering. While I would love to think that this means the Pokémon Company has learned to leave more than one or two surprises for us to discover while actually playing the games, the truth is probably that there’s just not much to say. So, while I kept refreshing Serebii waiting for Joe to get his hands on CoroCoro scans, I thought, why not go back to the very beginning, when all we had was a few seconds of gameplay and, well, the titles?
Ultra Speculation
Besides being ridiculously over the top, the “Ultra” in USUM’s titles must have something to do with Ultra Beasts and Ultra Space, right? Otherwise, we’d have gotten “Super Sun and Moon”, or something like that. So does this mean the fearsome Ultra Beasts will manage to be more than a glorified fetch&catch post-game quest this time? Will we spend more time in Ultra Space, given that, you know, we capture a Pokémon that can freely travel through it?
Speculation on a frame in the recent trailer poses that we could be seeing “Kartana’s Ultra Space”, which I find a bit of a leap based on just that image, but an interesting concept for sure. It could very well be said that the Ultra Space we see in Sun and Moon is “Nihilego’s”, as it fits it quite nicely, and that’s the only kind of Ultra Beast we see while we’re there. If this turned out to be true, and we got to see a different part of Ultra Space for each Ultra Beast, I’d honestly be delighted by the amount of new content (although the very thought of Guzzlord’s Ultra Space fills me with fright. Guzzlord eats everything, so will there be anything at all left there? And can there be more than one, or will they eat each other? It’s honestly disturbing).
Of course, this would present a bit of a dilemma; in Sun and Moon, the Ultra Beasts got essentially ripped out of Ultra Space by Lusamine’s actions, and they go after Fallers (people who have gone through Ultra Wormholes, so essentially us) because they want to go back home. It’s sad enough that we can only give them a new home on our belt; if we truly visit their Ultra Space in USUM, does that mean we go there to capture them? Isn’t that a bit… Lusamine-like? I realize we do this to Pokémon on a regular basis, but we usually never rip them from their entire home dimension.
(Unless someone else does it first and we need to catch them to save the world, of course. It’s not exactly a new story in Pokémon.)
Even if we do not see more Ultra Space in USUM than we did in Sun and Moon, I really agree with Thatch and everyone else who’s saying we need more Ultra Beasts in the plot. Tapu Koko battling UB-02 went kind of nowhere, and I do think Pokémon needs to get away from the “get 7 badges while everything is fine, then all hell breaks loose, you fight, get the cover legend, then everything is fine again, go ahead and finish the game” structure. I mean, they pretty much managed to do it in a game with no badges, too! It’s gotten to the point where it’s frankly annoying. The games are not a hundred hours long, we can handle plot sprinkled throughout even with the goldfish attention span Game Freak attributes to us (for which we need a two-hour tutorial, but can’t handle a Battle Frontier).
… sorry, that got a little out of hand. And to be fair to Sun and Moon, at least Lillie’s plot, which is tied to the main one, did develop throughout the game, so there’s that. And these games certainly have a very good story, although they’re not quite up to Black and White. (I really love Lillie, but N is unreachable in my heart.)
Anyway, back to our speculation! The one thing we know for sure about USUM is that it focuses heavily on Necrozma. Now, is Necrozma an Ultra Beast? What we know from Sun and Moon would indicate that it’s not: it doesn’t have an aura when we encounter it, it can’t be caught easily in a Beast Ball, is does not have the Ability Beast Boost, and it is not classified as an Ultra Beast anywhere, in-game or out. But the Pokédex does state that it it thought to have come from another world in ancient times, and the way we find it is the same as the Ultra Beasts. A common theory is that Necrozma was an Ultra Beast, but in the time since it got to our world the residual energy from the Ultra Whormole/Ultra Space has faded, leaving behind a Pokémon that’s way more similar to those from little old Earth. (Is the Pokémon world planet even named Earth? It is in the dub of one movie, but those also reference the Minnesota Vikings, and as such no dub is canon to me. Not to mention the anime is not canon to me with regards to the game world, but that’s another story altogether.)
But… what does this all mean for USUM, when the main feature is what looks like a fusion between Necrozma and the cover legends? It’s interesting to note that at this time we’re not even sure what, exactly, we’re seeing on the cover art for Ultra Sun and Moon.
The disturbing, luminous figure lurking half on each box is made explicit in this Japanese promo picture, and a Reddit user (I can’t find the comment again, sadly) pointed out that while the head’s shape is reminiscent of Deoxys, its eyes actually match Necrozma’s perfectly. So is Necrozma a being of light trapped in its black crystal body/armor? Is that why it’s so angry and aggressive? Are the cover legends Solgaleo and Lunala in something like their Radiant Sun and Full Moon phases and wearing Necrozma as armor? Or, as many speculate, are they light projections created by Necrozma?
I tend to think we’re looking at the actual Solgaleo and Lunala, wearing Necrozma… or possibly just its body. The presence of the light creature on the cover has to mean we get to see it clearly at some point during the game, otherwise I’ll feel incredibly cheated. So perhaps the cover art shows a new form for Solgaleo and Lunala… and a new form for Necrozma? I’d find this extremely interesting.
Another very interesting thing is this screenshot from the trailer.
Facing Necrozma at the Altar of the Sunne might mean several different things, mainly that the location is used for a different purpose in USUM’s story. Considering we haven’t seen even a glimpse of Lillie in USUM promotional material, it could be assumed that her role is at least different, and we no longer have a Cosmog/Cosmoem trailing us the whole time, so Solgaleo and Lunala might very well enter the story in a completely different manner. Will Necrozma somehow summon them from an Ultra Wormhole? Will they show up to stop it from attacking us? How different can the plot be, really? (I hope it’s very, very different, of course.)
And while we’re talking about the Altars… a relatively small feature of Sun and Moon was the ability to visit “the other world” by going there again. It was the way to get the other Cosmog, and to switch between the day/night cycle of the two games… and absolutely nothing else.
But the way in which Sun and Moon were parallel universes (like X and Y, or Ruby and Sapphire) actually went deeper, and it had to do with the Ultra Beasts. UB-02 and UB-04 were different Ultra Beasts in the two games, but the number indicating them was the same: there is no trace of Pheromosa and Celesteela anywhere in Pokémon Sun, and likewise no mention of Buzzwole and Kartana in Pokémon Moon. These two pairs of Ultra Beasts share at least one type, and seemingly a concept, but are polar opposites in other ways: Buzzwole and Pheromosa are both Bug/Fighting, semi-humanoid bugs with incredible attacking power, but one is very masculine and with good physical bulk, and one is incredibly frail and feminine. Celesteela and Kartana, meanwhile, are both Steel-types inspired by Japanese traditions, and Celesteela even masquerades as a Grass type like Kartana somewhat, with its bamboo-like look and access to moves like Leech Seed; but Celesteela is ginormous and super-defensive, while Kartana is hilariously tiny and aptly paper-thin on the Special Defense side. So are they not just separate Ultra Beasts, but perhaps alternate versions of each other? If you really do visit the world of the other game passing through the breach left behind by the Ultra Wormhole, why don’t things change to match the presence of the correct UBs? (Besides the fact that Game Freak wanted some of them to be version exclusives, of course.) Is the place you go not the parallel game, but another thing altogether? Will this ability return in USUM, and will it carry more consequences?
We don’t really have any answers at this time, but you know what? I’m very much fine with that. My curiosity is piqued, and researching things for this article has actually revived my hype for USUM, so yay for that! I hope it did something similar for you, if your own hype was in need of (ha) fluffing up.
Before I leave you, let me ask you two things: would you be interested in an article discussing my favorite Ultra Beasts, and some neat details I’ve discovered about them? And is the Fluff better without Pokémon-Whimsicott’s comments? After two years, I’m looking to freshen things up a little (and she wrote for another year before that, so to speak, so she probably deserves a long vacation), so if you have any suggestions or criticism to give on this regard, they’d be incredibly appreciated. (As always, requests for article topics are golden, too.)
Thank you so much for reading this far, and I’ll see you next time!

Using music videos for promotion and to express a creative idea.
Years ago music videos were a promo tool for artists. A way to get music out beyond the radio waves. First little promo clips were created for songs, later developing into the music video. When MTV launched on August 1st 1981 the way people accessed music changed, it was the first 24 hour music video channel (Guerrasio, 2015). The first video played was ‘Video killed the radio star’ by the Buggles (YouTube, 2010) In my opinion it is a very beautiful irony because soon it wasn’t radio making stars it was MTV. This idea of changing how people consume media is now more relevant then ever.
Youtube established in 2005 has really changed how people access media, with  490 Million unique worldwide users per month, people had a way to discover whatever they wanted and they had more control over what they could see. (Turner 2011)   42 of the 100 most viewed channels on youtube (On 9/02/16) are categorised as Music channels (Socialblade 2017) and only 4 of the top 100 viewed videos are not music videos (February 2017) (Wikipedia 2017) So music videos are prevalent online from many different genres. Viral success could send songs into the charts a prime example Gangnam Style by Korean artist PSY. With over 2700 million views (as of February 2017), since its release in July 2014 (Youtube 2014)  it is the most successful music videos of all time, being the most watched youtube video of all time. (Wikipedia 2017) The success to this video can be down to a few different factors. The famous dance gave people something to copy and parody, and a simple search of Gangnam Style parody brings up tons of results all with millions of views a piece. The video is also so outrageous that people would want to show it to their friends and share it around. However to reach such a global market it had to reach the local one, the video contained some top Korean personalities giving the videos loads of views before it hit viral success. (Social Maximiser 2012)  As soon as the video began to reach the masses no marketing was needed, as soon everyone from celebrities to school people were watching and recreating the video.
This got me wondering if music videos are what give a song commercial success, however looking at the most viewed list again most songs are by artists who had established successful careers. So views can be linked more to the artist’s success. So why else do artists love releasing music videos? Its common knowledge that most successful songs do have videos, however these songs are singles; these songs get a lot of focus promotion from the artists and labels. Even now bands can release a well made lyric video and still get millions of views. A recent example is Ed Sheerans first two singles, which both got put online with just a lyric video. Video were released later however the songs popularity came from the original release.
I believe that videos can be a more stylistic and creative medium for artists. I have decided to look at three bands approach to using music videos to express a visual idea of a album. PVRIS with their album 'White Noise’, As It Is with their album 'Okay.’ and Twenty One Pilots with their album 'Blurryface’.
PVRIS has released a video for every song of debut studio album White Noise (Released in 2015). With the exception of maybe 2 or 3 songs there is a very strong aesthetic linked to each video. There is a lot of monochrome imagery, and there is the a constant image of a hand mirror to start each video. If you look at these screenshots of different videos you can see a lot of similarities.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PZ2rNvqiSWM&index=10&list=RDEMCzoshWcVf_Pu4prVk3x9SQ (Eyelids)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i1y0y1EDcHM&index=4&list=RDEMCzoshWcVf_Pu4prVk3x9SQ (Fire)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ktgKzlJ1EiU&index=6&list=RDEMCzoshWcVf_Pu4prVk3x9SQ (Holy)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SxyEwNE5QSs (Smoke)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D0NqJgcbHe8&list=RDEMCzoshWcVf_Pu4prVk3x9SQ&index=5n (You and I)
These videos are for the more calmer songs on the album (with the exception of Fire and Smoke).  These songs to me sound very atmospheric and the videos reflect this visually. I link it to how they are all very minimalistic and black and white. The use of minimalist video is rapidly rising, cutting back on any extra details draws focus to one thing. Not only thing it is a way people can cut back on production costs. (SproutVideo. 2016) The minimalist approach of these videos can really help the viewer focus on the song, and to me it’s more of a visual aid to the music. These videos definitely show a lot of creative expression from the bands members. However they also used the videos for promotional purposes as well. In the run up to the release of the deluxe version of White Noise they released a few music videos, teasing at big news coming soon. (Alternative Press 2016) This was then followed by the release of the You and I video and the announcement of the deluxe re-release. The music videos helped generate hype for the band again to make the release more successful.
The next band is As It Is with their second studio album Okay. The album has a very strong concept and imagery. They created a fake company, Happy Co, who commercialise and sell happiness, even with a online store which demonstrates this fact, by 'selling’ products like Happy Pills and the Happy Car. (Happy Co 2016) The company first appeared in September when the band began teasing the album. Each member changed their display images on twitter to a please stand by message and also linked people to the Happy Co twitter. This all lead up to release of the title track of the album Okay. at the end of September. The concept was still a bit vague to fans, however many people were picking up on the 50s style being used by the band. I was one of the first people to get a more in-depth idea of the concept when I got to be part of the first video from the album Pretty Little Distance. The 50s look of the album was confirmed more when they dress code was 50s High School Prom. When we were briefed for the video they explained the concept of Okay. as the idea of people living with pseudo happiness. How people were being marketed this idea of a perfect life, the slogan of Happy Co being ain’t life swell? One of the lines of the song is 'ain’t life swell from a pretty little distance’, and one of as it is team explained that line from us saying that from a distance you can ignore any negatives and just see the good, and that in the album its As Is It fighting this idea letting people know it’s okay to not to be okay. We got this briefing so we could understand our roll in the video as we had to dance and look happy. Portraying that we are living under this pseudo happiness regime of Happy Co. The band used this video to further the look and concept of the album to really help boost the story and message of the album. You can see this theme develop more in the latest video for song 'Hey Rachel’ while the video focuses on the more personal aspect of the song you do seem some of the albums themes. The 50s style is very prominent you can also see in the acting style of the mum you see a very big obviously false smile. I feel like the concept will be shown a lot more in future videos as well as exploring the idea of Happy Co.
However in my personal opinion my favourite example of this is My Chemical Romance, they were very good at this visual artist representation of their music. While many people remember the black marching band jackets and monochrome colour scheme of the iconic Black Parade album I favour the follow up album; Danger Days:The true lives of the fabulous killjoys. This album aesthetic almost worked in parallel with  the terms of the last album. Both the sound and visuals changed drastically as the band moved on from the story of a dying cancer patient to the story of 4 freedom fighters in post apolyptic 2019. A decision which saved the band, after a vigorous touring cycle and playing out the Black Parades story every night the band nearly split. (Bryant 2014)
The album was teased with a trailer in September 2010. (Youtube 2010) Full of bright colours and small action sequences you would think this was a trailer for a comic book coming to life on screen. Which makes sense as frontman Gerard Way is a keen artist who designed all of the characters seen. (Popbuzz 2015) There is also various other videos on the bands youtube channel which introduces the company BL/ind. However the clearest explanation to the Danger Days universe came from a more recent video on the bands channel. I’m unsure if it is a re-upload: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aXC8bCihevU
This  video gives a strong backstory, we know the world has been destroyed in a war named the Helium war, Australia has vanished and BL/ind has taken over what remains of the USA. We also know the Fabulous Killjoys (MCR) are trying to protect an orphan girl.
Their story is told through two music videos, Na Na Na and Sing. Na Na Na is full of bright colours and you see the characters living their life in the outskirts with some action sequences and you can see who they are running from. We are introduced to the killjoys, Party Poison, Jet Star, Fun Ghoul and Kobra Kid. Then at the end of the video we see them lying almost dead on the ground and the girl being kidnapped. (Youtube 2010) The Sing video is a rescue mission, the bright colours are no longer present and after a action sequence the killjoys are killed and the girl escapes with the help of ‘Doctor Deaftify’ who is seen at the beginning of the Na Na Na video. (Youtube 2010)
The Danger Days concept is a true example of a musicians artistic visualisation of music. Gerard Way explained how the album was based off a comic idea he had. He later after the spilt of MCR co-wrote a short comic series ‘The True Live Of The Fabulous Killjoys’. Where the story of the girl continued of her at age 16. (Whitt 2013) The two videos which portrayed this story brought Way’s image to life, giving the band the chance to break away from the dark image of the previous album which was dragging them down. Not only that it was a creative involvement for the fans who began creating their own killjoy characters for their own creative expression.
As someone who aspires to make music videos I love this idea of bringing an artist creative idea to life. Music is such a creative art form and I believe that having a video to further express the idea is really important and through my research I appreciate music videos a lot more.

Reviews:
“So far so good.” (Sergio Terzella)
“Finally, a course that I could leave a 5-star rating. I just wished there was a section on pagination. it still deserves the 5-star rating though. Functionally reaching the enterprise level more than any other courses I have seen so far on Udemy. For the front end part, you can choose to use Angular or React, etc. to work with the REST API developed. The bonus and advanced topics are very important insights and separate the boys from the men. Before doing this course, it is recommended you take a basic course on nodejs, expressjs, ES6, mongodb, it will help you grasp the concepts faster, especially important is the ES6 part. Thank you for this course and Well done!” (aaron gong)
“If follow the video, examples doesn’t work.” (Roman Dubyanskiy)

One day I was stretching in the little space the tiny University Fitness gym allotted for such activity, and Mae happened to be there doing her Yoga. We were friends and had gone to the Puyallup fair with some mutual pals, like Lisa Yu and another personal trainer from the gym, John Tailor.
By the way, John ended up in a reality TV show called “Too Fat For Fifteen,” and ended up getting his Ph.D. and being teacher of the year in New Jersey. At the time, he liked Mae and was always hitting on her. Sorry, bud.
John Taylor in “Too Fat For 15” Reality TV
I was usually very private, but for some reason, I decided to come clean and needed to confess to someone—so I told Mae I was a homeless derelict. She took pity on me and decided to help. It just so happened that she was house-sitting for some rich doctor friends in Seattle, taking care of their dogs in their frequent absences.
She let me stay at her apartment while she was gone! Can you believe the faith of this woman? To this day, she admits she has never even thought of doing something like that before. I now get to tell people that I lived with her before we even dated. Talk about a crazy conversation starter!
I moved in and even slept in her bed (without her being there of course), while she was gone and my brand new apartment was finishing inspection. Later, when she came back, I moved to the couch as the project continued to be delayed. We had many conversations late into the night and actually got to know each other a little.
When I moved out, I asked my dad to help me build something for her as a gift. She didn’t have a good towel rack in her apartment, so we fashioned one out of wood and added some elaborate scroll saw work on the side of a tropical scene for decoration. We stayed in touch and eventually started dating.
It was near the end of my college years that decided to get back to the theater and I began auditioning for local theater on the professional level. I wanted to see where the dance training, combined with my music minor and acting training combined would take me.
It was then that the 5th Avenue Theater in Seattle took note of me and made me one of their premier chorus boys off and on seasonally from about 2000 to 2005. I worked through the ranks as an Equity actor and had a few good roles as well.
My first show was Gypsy, the life of Gypsy Rose Lee, one of my favorite musicals, where I danced with a few other great performers like Louis Hobson (who has some notoriety in Seattle with his own theater and a few IMBD credits), along with Greg Allen, one of the funniest men I have ever met and the greatest tap dancer.
Gypsy at the 5th Avenue Theatre
Greg has made a life of working professionally in the northwest and rarely needs to find other jobs, other than working at a coffee shop here and there between gigs. He made that choice long ago, stuck with it, and I commend him for it. The lead in Gypsy was played by Judy Kay, a fantastic and powerful singer with a long career on Broadway, who we used to see singing in New York at the Macy’s Day Parade. Every night I used to marvel as she closed the show with high notes and a ringing vibrato that filled the halls: “Everything’s coming up roses for me and for you!” I was a regular Joe among true battle-tested professionals.

Over the years I would perform in shows like Most Happy Fella, the 5th’s 75th Anniversary Gala fundraising events, Hair (twice, where I was the psychedelic modern dancer and acrobat with a giant glow in the dark phallus that everyone obviously assumed was real), A Chorus Line, playing the role of Don, The Wizard of Oz (the hardest show to be ensemble in, with all the crazy set changes and the green unitards), Yankee Doodle Dandy, a Hairspray Promo, Singin’ in the Rain, and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, where I got to back up a special show with Lucy Lawless, popular at the time for her role as Xena the Warrior Princess on TV.
Lucy was amazing, tall, beautiful and extremely gracious to us chorus boys and girls. We got to pick her up and twirl her and I was the one with the knee to the ground so she could sit on my lap as she flirted with the audience and sang.
After the show, as we left the stage door in the alley, I had never seen so many ravenous fans awaiting any performer. Even on Broadway, when I later waited for friends to get out of their shows, even the big stars did not draw these kinds of crowds. It also happened that this crowd filled the entire alley and circled out into the street and around the city block, all awaiting with bated breath the appearance of Lucy Lawless.
It was the largest number of Lesbians to ever congregate in one area at one time. We should have called the Guinness Book Of World Records, as it surely would have made the cover.
As with everyone else, Lucy was patient and gracious and took plenty of time to greet her fans and sign autographs. Poor clueless me thought it might be for us boys, and immediately checked my posture and flexed my muscles. I couldn’t understand why they never gave me or the other boys a second look. One of my coworkers had to point out to me that Lucy had a huge Lesbian following that traveled from all over to see her. We could have done a ribbon cutting ceremony of the alley and named it the New Isle of Lesbos.
We all went to dinner at Palomino’s just down the block after the show. Lucy went out of her way to raise us up and even kissed us on the cheek in front of our fans and parents just to make us look good. My uncle to this day is mesmerized by the lifestyle I lived, and everyone enjoyed the pleasant fiction that I had exotic Amazon women singers and dancers hanging all over me on a daily basis feeding me grapes.
Singing, dancing, and acting all at the same time requires a certain set of skills that relatively few people master. I was so fortunate to be allowed into this elite group of people for a short time in my life.
At the time, I had no clue how rare the opportunity or how lucky I was. I was having a blast and working hard and making more money than I had ever made in my life.
During college, I had tried a ton of entrepreneurial ways to make money, including starting a jewelry business, buying “tiny little ads” in newspapers, and even buying and selling real estate. I was constantly reading the papers and thinking outside of the box and going to seminars. It was an incredible time of dreaming and conquest for me.
My friend Gary called me an “Artist-Entrepreneur,” and I began to try to live up to it. I looked into starting a dance school, started an Internet import business before everyone else was doing it, and also took jobs for local ballet companies playing the prince in the Nutcracker or something when I wasn’t working at the 5th Avenue Theatre. I did a couple of runs with a theater on Vashon Island, where the parents and patrons of the theater would house me and feed me while I did the show. I lived out of a backpack and didn’t need much at all to live, so I was very happy.
Also beginning around 2001 I moved to New York City to try my hand there. When I wasn’t in Seattle working for the 5th, I was on an airplane. I found a scholarship that helped with the costs and decided to maximize it.
I stayed with a college friend, Ryan Jones, or “Jones” as we all called him, who had graduated from the UW drama program and married another artist, thereby landing in the Burrough of Queens. Jones was running a non-profit and starting this own theater projects. He now runs a new dance and performance art physical theater company with his new wife in Los Angeles.
It was a culture shock for me, but very good. I rode the trains and subways and lived in spare rooms and on couches for months at a time. I took dance classes alongside New York City Ballet dancers (that could mop the floor with me) and singing lessons from an amazing old sage called Maria Farnsworth who trained New York City Opera singers. I auditioned and honed my craft. I was eating, breathing, and sleeping New York and I loved the Big Apple and all its glory.
I ended up sleeping on a futon at my college roommate, Michael Bilikas’ pad in Greenwich Village. Michael was at this point at NYU dental school, and still on his phone all the time. His place was $1,700 per month for a tiny studio apartment in the early 2000’s, and the place was hopping all night. The only hour of quiet was between the hours of 3 am and 4 am, when the nightlife finally died down, and right before the garbage trucks came to clean up to start the day all over again.
A week before 9-11 I was in still in New York, preparing to fly to the gulf side of Florida to visit with my parents who were on vacation to see my aunt’s new place. She had moved to start over and was tired of the rain and cold in Washington State.
Around that time, Mae had decided on her own to come visit me in our tiny palace of squalor in Manhattan. I was too dense to admit it to myself at the time, but our relationship was going somewhere and she was pursuing me. I had long ceased to pursue anyone and was happy with my only-child alone time, and single laissez-faire lifestyle. I was focused on my fanciful career pursuing the elusive stage.
Mae and I did a little tour and ended up at the twin towers and then decided to have lunch in the financial district. I was comfortable getting around but didn’t really know that area. I decided to take her to lunch, but we couldn’t find even a lowly sandwich place that I didn’t have to take out a mortgage to afford.
I ended up putting an over-priced soup and sandwich on my credit card and tried to be chivalrous. I wanted to stay in New York City, and I secretly hoped Mae would just stay, but we both knew I didn’t have a real job or any kind of financial security to speak of, and we all know how attractive a man is and how secure his lady feels when the best he can offer is a futon in a dental student’s apartment.
I flew out from NYC and directly into the airport that we later found out the terrorists flew out from. I remember how laid back and relaxed that airport was then. The trip to Florida was short, but again reminded me how much I love the sunshine and palm trees.
As soon as I got back to Seattle we saw on TV a plane crashing into the twin towers. We were all in shock and completely stunned by the tragedy. The little airport in Florida and every other airport in the country decided to start increasing the security after that.
Life After High School: Chapter 9 Vagabond One day I was stretching in the little space the tiny University Fitness gym allotted for such activity, and Mae happened to be there doing her Yoga.
