my brother came to visit me this weekend and I casually brought up some gay opera thing and then he asked me "So what are the different layers of queer content or subtext you see in opera?" and
I
just
went
off
and talked at him for possibly 30 minutes about the various types of queer rep in opera level by level comparing historical obliviousness to intentional inclusion and everything in between.
I know talk about it all the time but it was so cool doing it in front of a live audience.
He was pretty invested in it too.
#anyway#i love talking with him about media stuff#it's probably about 50% of our convos#he's a film major so he will often regale me with critical film theory#and that one movie about the lemon he says is one of the greatest films he's ever seen but is literally just like 20 minutes of a lemon#it's beyond me#we like a lot of the same stuff and talk about that often#but it's also fun when we share stuff with each other the other one doesn't know much about#i have been waiting so long to talk to him about gay opera in this level of detail#twas a good time

the flowers
this is a snippet from the famous dc!au that started with The Greatest Hits [read here] you don’t have to read it but a lot of things would make sense if you do!
it isn't until about a year after you've wrapped the film and a few months after it's premiered that you find out the truth. And it does send you for a loop. The matter of it, and how you end up finding out.
You are sitting at a table for two. Your date for the evening? Delores. She had texted that she was working a job where you were and wanted to meet up and chat. You were so down, already terribly missing her even though you hadn't stepped on another set yet.
And that's what you talked about at first. How scared you were that now the movie was out, you were getting offers left and right. But deep down you didn't know if you were good enough. In your mind you thought that your success came from a lot of things and mainly one of them being luck.
You have no prior experience with acting. And now everyone is acting like you do because you were able to do well in one movie. You wanted to make sure you weren't a one hit wonder.
Delores of course talked you down from all this. She told you how good the movie was, how good you were for a first-time actor. She even offered you some contacts that knew of acting coaches.
Then you turned the conversation on her, which she was very scarce about. Apparently the film she's working on had her sign an NDA. She couldn't even tell you what kind of makeup she used on set today. It was that tight lipped.
So you moved on from that and asked her about her life. Delores is the proud mom of two cats (Ginger and Lemon). And they go with her everywhere. She brought them to set a couple of times when there weren't a lot of crew around. You liked Lemon the most because he liked getting head pats from you.
When the food came you two still managed to talk. You didn't realize how much you could talk while eating but with Delores it was normal. She's family.
The night wrapped up and Delores headed to the bathroom. It's when she came back and talked about wrap day that started this whole endeavor.
"Oh and those flowers you got me! I tell ya no one has ever gotten me something so colorful before." she smiles.
You can't help to laugh, "You're telling me it was better than Jason's?"
And she snickers to herself. Then she looks at you, as if expecting you to join her. When you don't her face drops a little.
"Those weren't for me," she says confusedly.
And if she was confused, so were you. What did she mean? You watched Jason hand them over to her the same time that you did. You were kinda jealous at how good his bouquet looked compared to yours, though you never said anything to him about it.
"Delores, I watched him hand it to you! They were for you, it was wrap day." you say.
She shakes her head and begins laughing with herself. But you're not laughing because you honestly want to know why she thinks those flowers weren't for her, and who she thought they were for.
Delores places her hand over yours on the table. And with a smile she just pats it, once then twice. You are utterly confused.
"He gave the flowers to me yes, but they weren't for me. I think you should just ask him." she puts simply.
And with that she's up out her chair and putting her coat on. You are slow to join her, and even slower to put your coat on. Your mind just couldn't wrap around it. Jason gave her flowers he was gonna give someone else? It kind of rubbed you the wrong way.
The two of you walk out of the restaurant and out on the street. It's midday and the paps aren't around which you're thankful for. Delores drove here so she said earlier on and wanted to pick up a few things after for work the next day. You sent your driver a text that you were finishing up and ready to be picked up.
You turn to her.
"Wait how'd you know that they weren't for you?" you asked finally.
"When I got home that night, there was a bouquet waiting for me at the door, signed with his name and a thank you note." she answers.
"Huh." you sound.
Delores smiles, "It was good to see you. Keep in touch yeah?"
She wraps her arms around you and you return the action. You wished that you could hire her as your personal makeup artist but you know she would only be tied down. She's off to do great things with great people. You couldn't stop that.
"I will, and whenever your NDA is up tell me the movie you're working on." you joke.
The two of you unravel from each other and give a few more goodbyes. And then she's walking off to her car. You see your driver a across the street. So with caution you look both ways before crossing and getting into the backseat.
"Where to?" Mike asks.
"Uh, I think I'm headed back to my place." you answer.
"Home it is." he says.
And then he's driving off. In the backseat you pull out your phone from your pocket. Your fingers work faster than you can think. Unlock your phone. Messages. Jason Todd.
You begin to type out a question but backtrack and delete your words. Maybe you should just leave it alone. It was his business after all. But then, you think, why would Delores tell you to ask him? Your fingers start typing again.
you: Hey Todd, how's heartthrob life going?
What you weren't expecting was a fast response. You heard it from your agent that he was already in meetings for other projects. It wouldn't be long before he's shooting again.
him: good now that I know you consider me a heartthrob.
you: shut up. I was JOKING.
him: it's okay. I think you're cool too. What's up?
you: I just met up with Delores for lunch.
him: nice!! but don't think you can steal her away from me.
you: hard to steal someone that already likes me more than you but ok. and I had a question
him: go ahead
you: so you got her flowers right?
him: you were there when I gave them to her
you: yes but she told me that those weren't for her. she actually couldn't stop laughing about it too.
him: oh
you: oh?
him: I don't know what to say
you: I mean it's fine if it's private. you don't have to tell me anything. but I was just wondering.
him: wondering what?
you: who were the flowers for if they weren't for Delores?
him: she didn't tell you?
you: nope said I should ask you.
him: they were for someone else on set.
you: Jason why would you give her flowers meant for someone else????
him: bc I'm an idiot and I saw you going to give her flowers and needed to beat you to it.
you: you wanted to one up me so bad you made yourself look like an idiot?
him: something like that.
you: nice hehehe
him: oh please do not hold this over me
you: oh Jason I think I will! have a great day idiot!!!
him: I'm gonna ask Dent to release your bad takes.
you: SHUT UP YOU WOULDN'T DARE
him: have a great day hun!!

Red Notice (2021) Review
Notice (get it?) the Rock always ends up in the jungle no matter what film he’s in? That Dwayne does love his jungles. And whaddya know, in Red Notice he finds himself yet again in a jungle of all places. Well heck, one more time I guess, all together now: welcome to the jungle!!
Plot: When an Interpol-issued Red Notice (the highest level warrant to hunt and capture the world's most wanted) goes out, the FBI's top profiler John Hartley (Dwayne Johnson) is on the case. His global pursuit finds him smack dab in the middle of a daring heist where he's forced to partner with the world's greatest art thief Nolan Booth (Ryan Reynolds) in order to catch the world's most wanted art thief, "The Bishop" (Gal Gadot). The high-flying adventure that ensues takes the trio around the world, across the dance floor, trapped in a secluded prison, into the jungle and, worst of all for them, constantly into each other's company.
It’s truly baffling seeing how Netflix started out as a small Blockbuster-wannabe DVD rental company and now it’s able to afford the millions worth salaries of some of the world’s biggest stars. That is never more present as in Red Notice, which features arguably THE most biggest current Hollywood stars in Dwayne Johnson and Ryan Reynolds. Oh, and Gal Gadot is in this too, but let’s be honest, besides being Wonder Woman her star profile is quite limited. Dwayne Johnson is a box office magnetic draw, managing to rake in the audience dollar by simply existing, whilst Ryan Reynolds with his Deadpool charm and charisma has made it near impossible for you to dislike him, no matter how many insults he throws at ya. In a nutshell, these two have managed to make a successful acting career by constantly playing themselves. So in Red Notice, even though Reynolds plays a con-man and Dwayne is on FBI duties, they are just playing themselves again. The movie’s poster might as well say Dwayne Johnson AS Dwayne Johnson and Ryan Reynolds AS Ryan Reynolds. Oh and Gal Gadot, yes, keep forgetting she’s in this movie. In that regard, if you like these three actors you’ll enjoy this movie. Personally for me I do find Ryan Reynolds quite funny, so I did find myself chuckling away to his one liners and quips, but again, that’s due to me liking Ryan Reynolds as a person. There’s zero performance from him or his fellow actors here. But look, for an over-expensive Netflix movie, you get what you pay for (as in your monthly Netflix fee) and its nice seeing these actors do what they’re good at.
As for the movie itself though, Red Notice is a blend of Fast & Furious with Indiana Jones, and minus a minor twist at the end which I didn’t see coming (though to be fair when that twist occurs you could tell it was very tacked on and was a last minute creative decision), the movie offers hardly any surprises. It’s exactly what you expect from this type of film - you have the characters throwing witty remarks, fairly generic but entertaining enough action sequences and the chance to see many big scale locations filmed in crisp 1080p quality. The movie doesn’t take itself too seriously, which is good, as the amount of implausibility that you witness on screen....well, you just have to suspend your sense of disbelief. Look, for a movie that opens on a fictional historical montage with a narrator in serious tone talking about Cleopatra’s and Mark Antony’s love for one another, and how Mark gave her three golden eggs as a gift like the cheeky goose that he was and then the movie is about a bunch of people going after said golden eggs.....like, what do you expect from this type of movie? Its silly, action packed, and the main star trio seem to be having a blast. You like these actors, then watch it, if you don’t, then give it a miss. Easy-peasy, lemon squeezy!
Overall score: 5/10

yippee-ki-yay, motherfucker
movie night at your place sparks the age old debate: is die hard really a christmas film?
fandom: outer banks
ship: slight jj maybank x reader, pogue friendship
word count: 967
featuring: too many movie references/mentions, the pogues being cute, swearing, overuse of italics for ✨emphasis✨
a/n: day 5 of my holiday challenge, a day late ‘cause work sucked ass. idk what this even is lmao (is it bad to say that i’ve never seen die hard the whole way through? oops). unbetaed, all mistakes are my b.
come join my holiday challenge!
December 2020
"Okay, which one are we watching first: Elf, Home Alone, or How the Grinch Stole Christmas?" You asked, holding all three DVDs in your hands and turning to face your friends piled together on the couch; everyone yelled out their choice at once and the sheer volume of their combined voices made you wince.
"Jesus, guys, take it down a notch! We're not debating which one is the best of all time, here.”
You laughed as Kiara lovingly flipped you off from her seat between Pope and John B before she leaned forward to grab a slice of pizza from the box on the table. "Too late, Y/N. The answer is Home Alone and anyone who says otherwise-" she turned to stare pointedly at John B as Pope nodded in agreement- "is wrong."
"No, it's gotta be Grinch, hands down." He fired back, nudging Sarah in the side with his elbow. "Back me up here."
The blonde girl just shrugged and took a casual sip of her beer. "You're both wrong because it's obviously Elf, no question."
"Correct!" You smiled in approval and spun on your heel to slip the DVD into the player, ignoring the rest of the group's protests, then grabbed the remote and squeezed into the spot between Pope and JJ. "No bitching! I'm the host, what I say goes."
"Hate to break it to you but everyone already knows what the greatest Christmas movie of all time is." JJ finally spoke up as he threw an arm over your shoulders and pulled you closer to his side. "It's Die Hard."
"For the last time, no, it is not. It's not even a holiday movie!" Pope stated while you and Kiara exchanged a flat look over the back of the couch. Every single year, ever since the first annual pogue Christmas movie night back in fifth grade, the two boys (and occasionally John B, whenever he felt like making trouble) would have the same argument, going over the same points like two annoying, infuriating broken records and never reaching a conclusion. It was practically as traditional as the movie night itself.
"It takes place during a holiday party, so yes, it is!"
"Dude, the setting doesn't change the fact that it's a typical action movie!"
To your right, you could hear low conversation as John B filled Sarah in on the Great Die Hard Debate, Kiara adding details every once in a while and you wished you'd picked to sit on the end of the couch instead, where you wouldn't be stuck in right in the middle of the action. That massive crush you had on JJ always seemed to get you into trouble without fail.
"Guys, can't we just agree to disagree?" Your hopeful question went ignored and you sighed, not surprised in the slightest as you relaxed against the blond boy's side with your arms crossed. Kiara caught your eye and mouthed, "you tried," before offering you a sympathetic smile.
"The fucking screenwriter himself said it was 'as much of a holiday film as White Christmas', and that's a direct quote, I can prove it!" JJ said, starting to reach for his phone as Pope laughed and shook his head.
"And Bruce Willis himself, the fucking star of it, said, and I quote, 'Die Hard is not a Christmas movie.'"
"Well, if Die Hard's a Christmas movie then so's Mean Girls, if you think about it." To everyone's shock it was Sarah who interrupted the loud -oh so loud- discussion around a mouthful of popcorn and upon seeing the sea of five blank faces staring back at her, she continued, “The Jingle Bell Rock scene? Technically, it should count.”
“But it’s only one scene, not the whole movie.” JJ leaned forward to argue with the girl at the other end of the couch and you, out of spite that you lost your comfy spot tucked against his warm shoulder, decided to take a page out of John B’s book and stir the pot.
“You know, Sarah’s got a good point. What about the ugly sweater party in Bridget Jones’ Diary?”
“Or Narnia?” Kiara quickly added before JJ or Pope, sitting up now, too and looking like he just swallowed a sour lemon, could counter. “They get presents from Santa!”
“Um, Edward Scissorhands? Winona Ryder dancing in the snow?” That was John B adding his two cents and it opened the floodgates for everyone to start listing off different movies in rapid fire succession.
“You’ve Got Mail!”
“Gremlins!”
“Rocky!”
“Like, every Harry Potter movie. Seriously.”
“I can’t believe I have to listen to this...this slander!” Pope said, shaking his head in disgust while JJ crossed his arms and leaned back against the couch in a huff.
“And I can’t believe I’m agreeing with you!”
Kiara raised an eyebrow and looked back and forth between the two boys. Oh, now you can agree on something? Do you guys even realize how fucking stupid you sound?”
“No.”
“Yes.”
“Okay, executive order from the host! Die Hard is whatever you want it to be.” You said, grabbing the remote from the table before pushing Pope’s chest until he relaxed back against the couch. “Believe what you wanna believe but do it quietly, I just wanna watch Elf in peace. Capiche?”
When no one protested otherwise you pressed play, then tucked yourself under JJ’s arm once again; he squeezed your shoulder in response and you couldn’t stop the smile that made its way onto your face.
The blissful silence lasted only ten minutes before John B shot up straight and turned to the rest of you with wide eyes, his next words sending the whole room into chaos once again.
“How did we forget Iron Man 3?!”
You just put your head in your hands and groaned.

Mini Fanfic #822: Just Another Day at the Beach (Phoenix Wright)
12:09 p.m. at The Local Beach........
Ema: (Sighs Relaxingly While Sitting Down on a Laid Back Chair) Beach at last~
Klavier: (Chuckles Lightly) Looks like someone's happy to be here today~
Ema: Hey, if it means getting away from detective work for a day or two, then I'm all for it. It's exhausting as all hell......
Trucy: (Giggles Softly While Sitting Next to Wocky) I can relate. I love being a magician and helping out cases as much as the next gal, but it's nice to have some relaxation every once and a while. (Rest Her Head Onto Wocky's Arm) Don't you think so too, Wocky?
Wocky: Hey, you guys think I can get buff one of these days?
Ema: (Gives Wocky a Confused Look on her Face Along With Everyone Else) Buff?
Wocky: Yeah. You know, like having huge muscles, rock solid abs, pecs that are big enough to move up and down some....how..... (Turns to See Trucy Playing Moving One of his Man Boobs Up and Down Before Giving a Deadpinned Look)
Trucy: (Immediately Stops What She's Doing and Gives Her Boyfriend an Awkwardly Smile and Giggle) Sorry, honey~
Klavier: Cuteness aside, I believe you have what it takes to form a musclar figure some day in the future. Though, it will take you a long time for that happen.
Ema: Fop's right. You're gonna have to go to the gym almost everyday to build muscles in your body one by one.
Trucy: That or using anabolic-androgenic steroids to gain them faster.
Wocky: (Already Gotten Confused) Anabolic what now?
Ema: Anabolic Androgenic Steroids. They're steroids that increases the muscles' mass and physical strength. Most of them are fairly effective to the point where some athletes would use them to cheat their way to victory.
Wocky: (Eyes Widened in Complete Shock) Seriously!? I thought those guys gain their muscles from the very beginning!?
Klavier: Most do. There just some who would rather use illegal tactics to win easily than doing it fairly. It..... never really ends well for them once they eventually get caught.
Trucy: I'd say... It's sad to see those athletes getting ban from playing sports again, but....rules are rules.
Wocky: ('Tch') Sucks to be them. I'd rather get my muscles like a real man than cheat like those posers- ('CHU') (Starts Rubbing the Bottom of his Nose) 'Cuse me.
Trucy: (Giggles Softly at How Cute Wocky's Sneeze Was) Awww~ Gesundheit~
Wocky: (Gives Trucy Another Confused Look on his Face) Huh?
Trucy: (Giggles Some More) It's another word for "Bless you", silly!~
Wocky: Oh uh...Yeah. (Chuckles a Bit Awkwardly While Blushing a Little) I...knew that already.
Ema: (Smirks at Wocky) You sure about that, Boy Genius?
Wocky: (Gives Ema a Deadpinned Look) Don't test me, lab girl.
Klavier: (Chuckles Lightly) Who would've that guess our tough, little gangster would sneeze like a girl?
Wocky: (Immediately Glares at the Prosecutor While Raising his Fist Up) Yeah? Well, how about I pound your ass like boy!- That didn't come out right.....
Ema: It didn't. (Went Back to Smirking Again) But at least you still have cute sneeze going for ya.
Klavier: (Chuckles Lightly Some More)
Trucy: (Pouts at the Couple While Hugging Wocky's Arm) Guys, stop making fun of my boyfriend! He may be huge cutie pie at times.....
Wocky: Hey!
Trucy: But he's the cutie pie I know and love everyday, thank you very much. (Kiss Wocky on the Cheek)
Wocky: (Sighs While Blushing Again) I love you too, Truce, but you're way more adorable than I can ever be.
Trucy: Yeah, but you still have your cute moments from time to tine. Like that time you cried throughout the documentary about deers
Klavier: (Raised an Eyebrow in Confusion) What makes him cry over something like that?
Wocky: (Already in Tears) ('Sniff') ('Sniff')
Trucy: (Gently Rubbing Wocky's Back Reassuringly) It reminds him a lot of Bambi's mom.
Ema: Bambi's Mom?- Oooooh.....I remember that scene....
Klavier: You know, I've never really gottem the chance to watch that movie before. (Turns to Ema) Was it really that sad?
Ema: (Shrugs) For the first half of the film maybe. Been a while since I've seen it myself really. (Starts Snickering at Wocky) Still, I can't believe you let cartoon deer make you cry.
Wocky: BAMBI'S MOM WAS GREATEST MOM IN ALL OF CINEMA, DAMNIT!!! (Went Back to Crying)
Trucy: (Gives her Crying Boyfriend a Loving Hug) I know she was, Wocky-Kins~ I know. It's okay~
Athena: (Excitedly Makes Her Way To the Group Along With Apollo While Carrying a Watermelon) Hey, guys! You wanna see me try and crush this watermelon with my thighs!?
Apollo: I have my doubts, but-
Wocky: (Starts Crying Loudly in Trucy's Arms)
Apollo: Uhhhh.....Did...we miss something or.....
Ema: Tough boy here is crying about Bambi's Mom.
Athena: Bambi's mom- Ooooooooh...I get now....Aww~

FEATURE: The Fantastic True Story of How Project A-ko Was Lost and Found
Disclosure: The author of this article personally contributed to the MADOX-01 Kickstarter project described later in the piece.
Thirty-five years ago, when Project A-ko debuted in Japanese movie theaters, no one thought they were witnessing the birth of an anime classic. Director Katsuhiko Nishijima jokingly claimed in the behind-the-scenes documentary Project A-ko Secret File that he helped create the film because he needed some cash to buy new teeth.
The film, which is named after an unrelated Jackie Chan movie and which began production as an adults-only entry in the Cream Lemon series before transforming into a general audience science fiction action-comedy film we know now, would prove popular enough to spawn three sequels and a spin-off series.
If you've seen the film, it's no mystery why Project A-ko earned its reputation as a milestone of modern anime with adoring fans both in Japan and overseas. And yet, the film itself was shrouded in mystery, because sometime after its video masters were struck from the original 35mm film elements, the reels containing Project A-ko vanished without a trace.
This is the story of that discovery.
School Girls Head West
In the United States, Project A-ko was originally licensed by the now-defunct Central Park Media, a New York-based film company run by John O'Donnell. CPM first published the film on VHS in 1991, and Project A-ko proved to be an evergreen title all the way up until its final CPM release on DVD in 2002. After CPM went out of business in 2009, Discotek Media announced the rescue of the license of Project A-ko in 2010, releasing the film and its sequels on DVD later in 2011.
Project A-ko still has a huge fan following overseas, but for all its success as an anime classic, it has never received a high-definition Blu-ray release in the United States. Even Central Park Media’s final “Special Edition” DVD release was recorded off the laserdisc because the original film elements were presumed to be lost. When it came time to create an HD remastered release, the original 35mm prints of Project A-ko were nowhere to be found.
As a result, when Discotek Media announced that they were bringing Project A-ko to Blu-ray in September 2020, they also revealed that they were using technologies called the Domesday Duplicator and AstroRes to try to capture the best video possible from the available sources.
According to Justin Sevakis, CEO of MediaOCD, Discotek’s Production Contractor, the Domesday Duplicator captures and digitizes RF signals from multiple laserdisc sources, which results in a cleaner image overall.
“[Domesday] is a cool concept and very intriguing, but I think people got the wrong idea that this was some sort of game-changer in terms of restoring A-ko,” said Sevakis. “It definitely would’ve helped, but it only got us part of the way back to the condition of the original master tape it came from. Even if we had THAT tape, it was a video master from 1986, and still would’ve required a lot more restoration work from that point onward.”
youtube
The initial plan was to take the Domesday Duplicator transfer to an engineer who then used AstroRes, a process that uses machine learning to estimate the original linework to create an HD signal of the original. “When it comes off the disc, it’s still a video transfer,” said Sevakis. “Even for an SD master, it’s blurry because it was made in 1986. If anything was the miracle process, it was AstroRes.”
When it comes to older anime, Sevakis says that missing film elements are the biggest challenges when it comes to preserving and archiving. “If we’re stuck with decades-old video masters, often they’re made in such a way that makes restoring them very difficult or impossible ... Sometimes there are also old analog video problems that make the image completely unacceptable on a modern 4K display. At that point, the best you can really do is release it in standard definition.”
The Domesday Duplicator and AstroRes processes certainly made the most sense for the Project A-ko restoration Discotek was producing at the time. But soon enough, a simple investigation into an unrelated Shinji Aramaki title would prove otherwise.
The MADOX-01 Connection
While Discotek Media began the Herculean task of reconstructing Project A-ko, a plucky little North Carolina-based distributor known as AnimEigo was breaking ground on their next Kickstarter-financed release: a Blu-ray version of Metal Skin Panic MADOX-01, an original animation video from 1987 directed by Shinji Aramaki.
A one-shot story about a young man who dons a highly advanced prototype suit of mechanical powered armor in a quest to say goodbye to his girlfriend, MADOX-01 is a goofy story with a lot of humor and some exquisite technical animation.
In fact, Metal Skin Panic MADOX-01 was the first anime title licensed and distributed by AnimEigo. In an interview included as a special feature on the DVD release, Robert Woodhead, the founder and CEO of the AnimEigo, recalled that originally he was given the option to license Project A-ko or MADOX-01, but he decided to go with MADOX-01 because he felt it had more “mainstream appeal,” a choice which he jokingly referred to as “the first of many terrible business decisions.”
Flash forward to December of 2020, when Robert Woodhead of AnimEigo and Ollie Barder of Sola Digital Arts discussed securing the materials for a high definition Blu-ray release of Metal Skin Panic MADOX-01. This plan hit a snag: Woodhead had previously inquired about obtaining the film elements needed to make a MADOX-01 Blu-ray but was informed at the time that the original materials were not available.
It seems the black hole of “lost films” Project A-ko fell into claimed another victim, but Woodhead was undaunted. In January of 2021, Woodhead made new inquiries with AMG, the company that acquired the rights to MADOX-01 from Pony Canyon. An AMG representative acquired a list of films being stored at the Tokyo Genzōsho film archives — “information that the previous contact person at Pony Canyon apparently didn’t have,” according to Woodhead — and the missing MADOX-01 materials were located.
Tokyo Genzōsho, also known as Tokyo Laboratory and usually shortened to Togen, hosts a wide range of original materials from Japanese film producers in climate-controlled environments. As one of Japan’s major labs, they offer a wide range of professional media services to the film industry.
Found Footage
During a meeting with the AMG licensors, Woodhead was shown the list of films stored at Togen. Much to his surprise, not only was Metal Skin Panic MADOX-01 listed but right next to it on the list was another title: Project A-ko.
The long-missing film 35mm print of Project A-ko wasn't actually lost. The film had simply been misfiled and couldn't be located for decades as a result of a clerical error. “It wasn’t hard to find,” said Woodhead. “The problem was that there was a break in the chain of knowledge about the film’s location.”
“We’ve been looking for Project A-ko for 20 years,” Sevakis explained. “Most professional film, anime included, is locked away in a giant climate-controlled warehouse, in this case, run by the film lab that developed it. According to their records, it wasn’t there."
Due to Woodhead’s discovery, Discotek Media was able to request the archivists to make a physical search of the vault. When they did, they learned that Project A-ko “was there the whole time,” in Woodhead’s words.
Happy Endings
After Woodhead got permission to inform Discotek of his discovery and the missing film reels were found, Discotek announced on a Twitch stream in March 2021 that they were canceling their initial plans for the AstroRes remastered Project A-ko release and instead were producing a remastered Blu-ray using the newly rediscovered original 35mm print.
And that's the story of how Project A-ko was lost and found: lost by accident due to a simple filing error, found through happenstance and serendipity, an anime classic rescued from obscurity for future generations of fans to enjoy.
At the time of this writing, the restoration process for the Blu-ray release is well underway, with Discotek eliminating anomalies “ranging from dust and small scratches to flickering and jitter caused by the photography of the era,” according to Sevakis. While there is no release date currently set, if the sample footage above is anything to go by, Project A-ko is going to look and sound better than ever.
As for AnimeEigo's efforts on MADOX-01, the company's Kickstarter for the OVA reached its $50,000 goal in 42 minutes after it launched on April 30, now sitting at over $130,000 as of May 4, 2021.
“The film lab vaults are out-of-sight, out-of-mind for most of the companies in Japan, especially because at this point not many people deal with film on a regular basis,” said Sevakis. “The people dealing with the rights often don’t even have a clear idea of what’s in there, even if the records are correct! Who knows what else might be found?”

Drake x Lydia OTP Asks
Thank you for the tag @drakeandcamilleofvaltoria!
1. Who pulls the other closer while sleeping?
Drake. He pulls Lydia closer to him pretty much all the time. Lydia loves it, except when there’s a heatwave then she’ll try and move over.
2. How do they wake up next to each other? Ex - Tangled in each other’s arms? Is one falling off the bed? Etc.
Mainly tangled up, sometimes to Drake spooning Lydia. There were a few times he was nearly falling off the bed, when Lydia was pregnant.
3. What movie do they watch when they both had a bad day and just want to turn off their brains for a little while?
The Princess Bride. Lydia watches it all the time when she’s feeling down. She got Drake to watch it too with her, telling him that a comedy fantasy is a good cure. He use to tease her about it, but now he loves it.
4. Who picks something up, says a pun with the object then laughs as if it’s the funniest thing they ever heard.
They both do. Lydia probably does it a bit more, but they do their best to make the other one laugh with the bad puns
5. How do they hype one another up?
Lydia does little chants and says to Drake how much she loves him. She cheers him on.
Drake tends to cheer for Lydia and sometimes bellow out ‘THAT’S MY WIFE!’ or he’ll keep quiet and calmly talk to her, telling her how amazing she is and send her texts throughout the day.
6. When one of them gets a new outfit, how does the other react?
When Lydia’s got a new outfit, Drake normally doesn’t say anything first, but just stare with his mouth wide open. When he’s calmed down, he tells her how beautiful and gorgeous she is.
Lydia will flirt a lot, which tends to lead Drake’s new outfit being removed etc.....
7. Who tries to playfully scare the other person and who always knows where the other person is?
Lydia tries to scare Drake but she’s not very good at keeping quiet and sneaking up on him. Drake tends to catch her and swing her around playfully before she can get him.
Drake pretty much knows where Lydia is. Not in a stalker/possessive way, he just very protective of his wife and wants to make sure she’s safe. However, he does respect her privacy
8. When they grocery shop, what is the one section they love to playfully mess around in and why?
The bakery section. They both have a real sweet tooth and normally end up buying doughnuts. They often tease each other and make too many sweet puns.
9. When their partner has a bad day, what is something the other picks up to try and make their day a little better? Ex - fast food, flowers, a punny card, etc.
Drake will cook her favourite dinner (chill con carne) and run her a bubble bath for the both of them, giving her a shoulder massage while she leans back against him.
Lydia will bake a lemon drizzle cake for him and put on his favourite film (Rocky) and sit with him and hold him.
10. Who runs up and hugs their partner while the other catches them?
They both run up to each other and hug, Drake does the catching.
11. What song reminds them of each other?
Rewrite The Stars from The Greatest Showman
Your Song by Elton John (Their wedding song!)
12. Who presses their nose against their partner’s cheek before kissing them?
Drake.
13. What small quirks do they love about each other?
Every Saturday morning, Lydia wears a face mask after her shower and will seat and eat grapes and yogurt while reading. Drake finds it so adorable.
Drake does push ups before bed. Lydia used to find it a bit odd, but she now loves it and loves to watch.
14. Who accidentally snorts when they laugh and that makes both of them laugh harder?
Lydia.
15. What are some things that they do for one another because they know their partner hates it? Ex - do the dishes, phones to make an order, talks to sales clerk, etc.
When going away, Lydia does all the packing but Drake will unpack, as she can’t stand it. She mainly does the talking for appointments or business. Drake does the night driving

910: The Final Sacrifice
I grew up in Calgary, which means that the riff about Edmonton being kind of like hell but less so is at least six times funnier than it would be otherwise. My sister did her IT degree at the same school (the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology) as the people in this movie were taking their film classes. I’ve probably been to places where they shot scenes and didn’t know it… all of which makes The Final Sacrifice particularly dear to my heart, even by MSTie standards.
Seven years ago, young Troy’s father was chased down and murdered by armed luchadors in the woods somewhere. Now, grown into a man of at least twelve, Troy is determined to find the killers. In an attic he discovers a mysterious map and a bunch of information about the ‘Ziox’, but before he can puzzle it out the luchadors attack! Troy escapes by climbing into a truck driven by Canada’s second-greatest hero (after Wolverine), the one, the only Zap Rowsdower. Together, the two of them set out to conquer Zap Rowsdower’s car trouble and uncover the secret of the Ziox, a lost civilization that once ruled the land of Fish Creek Provincial Park!
First, some Canadiana. The Lemon Mine is a legendary lost gold deposit supposedly found by prospector John Lemon. Also, Maple Syrup Rustling is a thing that goes on in Canada. Over the winter of 2011-2012, nearly three thousand tonnes of it were stolen from the Federation of Quebec Maple Syrup Producers, one barrel at a time. Canadians regard this in the same way as other countries might think of big art or bank heists, with the perpetrators becoming folk-culture heroes. Also also, Brain Guy was wrong. The worst thing ever to come out of Canada is, hands down, our geese, which attack livestock, destroy aircraft, and don’t even taste good. They are the worst of all birds and we apologize.
Second, some racism. According to the movie, the Ziox were a lost civilization who lived in Southern Alberta eleventy thousand years ago, “way before the Indians” and built cities of gold in the middle of the prairie. Since Sartoris and Zap Rowsdower, among others, are descendants of these people it appears they were supposed to be white. Because there’s no way anybody who wasn’t white could have built huge cities full of golden pyramids, right? It’s not like there were entire cultures in the Americas who were known for exactly that!
Those peoples didn’t live in southern Alberta, though, for the excellent reason that there’s nothing here. This area is miles upon miles of rolling grassland, from the foot of the mountains all the way to Manitoba, with not much in it but buffalo and buffalo by-products. There’s some sandstone you can build quaint town halls with, but not pyramids that will last thousands of years. The wildlife aren’t suitable for domestication. There’s no meaningful amount of gold. There weren’t even very many trees until Europeans started planting them as windbreaks. For as long as there’s an archaeological record, the indigenous peoples around here have been nomadic hunters. Permanent settlements couldn’t get started until the railway arrived to bring in supplies.
On to the movie. When you want to tell a big story but have only a little budget, one popular way to do it is by having most of your adventure happen in the middle of nowhere so you can save your money to make a big impression in only a few key scenes. Take, for example, The Princess Bride, which is mostly just a few people in the wilderness but put enough into the palace sequences to make us believe we were in a Renaissance-era world. The Final Sacrifice is a stellar example of a film that’s too damn cheap to even get away with that. They wanted demonic idols and spectacular caverns and an ancient city rising from the earth but all they got is a bunch of toothpick models and papier-mache, almost as pathetic as the dinosaur puppets in Future War.
The nail in the coffin is that The Final Sacrifice can’t even do wilderness very well. The outdoor scenes are in very open scrub, which are rather desolate but don't give the impression of somewhere miles from civilization. It looks, like I already observed, a lot like Fish Creek Park, which is about a twenty-minute walk from where I grew up and sees a steady stream of picnickers and brownie troops all summer. Any given shot in The Final Sacrifice looks like if you moved the camera three inches to one side you’d see a bunch of little kids making s’mores.
I’m pretty sure the writers originally had something much grander in mind, and had to tone it down a lot to get it to the screen with the money they had – because when you think about it, it’s obvious that The Final Sacrifice is a story about the lost continent of Atlantis. You’ve got an ancient advanced civilization that was punished for its hubris and blasphemy by sinking, and which promises untold power and wealth to whoever can find its remains. That’s a tale that ought to span continents, with adventurous archaeologists and deserted isles and plane crashes and such things… but all anybody had was a small town and some back woods a few hours’ drive out of Calgary, so they had to make do. The result feels like a story trying to be bigger than it is, as if the events in the movie only think they ought to have world-shaking implications but actually don’t matter to anyone.
Adding to the impression that there’s something missing from this movie, the story depends an awful lot on some very odd coincidences. I can buy that Troy lives only a couple hours’ drive from the site of the Ziox city – that’s where his father lived and worked, and since Troy’s aunt didn’t know about the cultists there was no reason for her to move. But then the truck he climbs into just happens to belong to a former member of the cult? Zap Rowsdower is supposed to be an alcoholic drifter who just wants to get away and forget, so why the heck is he still in the area? Canada is big. Go to Halifax. Go to Resolute Bay. Hell, leave the country. Why stick around within a few miles of the evil cult that threw you out?
Then there’s Pipper. He’s been hiding from the cult for years, he says, but he’s doing it in a cabin about ten meters (that's thirty-five feet for the Americans in the audience) from the site of the idol! That might make sense if he were guarding it, but he doesn’t know it’s nearby and professes to believe it’s just a legend. So what is he doing there? Movie audiences can handle magic and aliens and all kinds of other ridiculous things, but too many coincidences will kill suspension of disbelief in a way the overtly fantastical never can.
When you want to tell a big story in your movie, it’s also helpful if the audience knows what the characters want and what will happen if they fail. On the first count, I guess The Final Sacrifice does okay. We do know that Troy wants to find out why his father died and what’s up with all this stuff he left behind, and Zap Rowsdower just wants to get away from this distasteful part of his past but is sucked back into it by Troy whether he likes it or not. On what will happen if they fail, however, the film is much less clear. Sartoris talks about raising an army of invincible warriors and conquering the world, but it’s not clear how making a sacrifice to the idol in the woods will bring that about. Does Sartoris believe the city will arise full of undead soldiers or something? The only version of the associated legends we get comes from Pipper, who says nothing about any such thing. We’re obviously meant to believe that at least some of the population escaped the sinking, since they had to go give rise to descendants like Zap Rowsdower and the luchadors.
The ending is clearly supposed to be ironic, as it is Sartoris’ death that satisfies the idol and raises the city from the ground. This would have been more effective if Sartoris himself had lived long enough to appreciate the irony, but that much works well enough. The rest of the events at the end of the film just leave way too many questions. What happened to all the luchadors? They pull off their masks and walk into the light and out of the movie. Why did Zap Rowsdower’s tattoo disappear? Does Sartoris actually have some kind of magical powers, since he seems able to telepathically contact Zap Roswdower in his sleep? Did the city actually blast off into space, possibly taking the luchadors with it? Because there are definitely shots that make it look like that’s happening. What’s going on there?
Honestly, that’s not a bad explanation. Throwing some Erich Von Daniken, Pumaman or Hangar 18 bullshit into this would actually have made way more sense. Wow, is that ever sad.
It’s easy to be really hard on The Final Sacrifice because it is so very cheap, but on the other hand it was literally made by first-year students at a polytechnic not known for producing filmmakers. When you think of it that way, it actually looks surprisingly like a real movie… but still not enough that it should ever have been released into the wild. The fact that Tjardus Greidanus’ imagination was so much bigger than his budget makes it seem like he had some honest potential. He’s still making both narrative and documentary films, and I’m kind of interested to see some of them.

30 Rock // Jenna Maroney
Name: Jenna Maroney (born Yustrepa Gronkowitz) Age: 35 - 46 Relationship: Single (verse depending) open for ships Sexuality: Bisexual Job: Actress Residence: New York, New York, U.S Faceclaims: Jane Krakowski Blog written by: @goodcryunicorn2
Jenna's father, Werner Maroney, was a burger server in suburban Santa Barbara. Apparently, he spurned Jenna's mother Verna for a "curly-haired" surfer named Roberta. Jenna still says she will "always be his little girl." She apparently has a sister who peed in one of her eyes when she was little, which caused it to not open all the way. Jenna studied voice at Northwestern University where she first met Liz Lemon, while Jenna was also "slutting it up" to get car dealership owners to put her in their commercials. She later did theater work, including The Jenna Chronicles: A One-Womyn Show in 1996, Con Air: The Musical in 1997, and she participated in a Gangsta rap contest in 2000. In the musical version of Con Air, she appears to have played Rachel Ticotin's character. She was also once engaged to David Blaine. She won a Cable ACE Award for her work on HBO's Arliss. As the series premieres, Jenna is the main star of The Girlie Show, a sketch comedy series created by her friend Liz Lemon. Jenna's star billing is drastically reduced when Jack Donaghy is hired as a new network vice president and brings in Tracy Jordan, a popular, unpredictable and erstwhile comedic movie actor on the skids. On top of that, Jack decides that Tracy is more a priority than Jenna and orders the show's title changed to TGS with Tracy Jordan. The move has Jenna furious; not only is she left out of the loop, but she's disappointed to see Liz give in to Jack's demands. In addition she finds herself at the mercy of Tracy's mentally unstable antics, the writing staff's constant pranks, and Jack's enduring avoidance of her (his reason is that she is not promotable for the show). Despite all this, Liz assures Jenna that her future on the show is safe...for now. When she is not doing the show, she also does films, having wrapped up filming The Rural Juror written by John Grisham's brother Kevin Grisham, which she intends to promote until Jack replaces her appearance on Late Night with Conan O'Brien with Tracy. In "The Rural Juror", she mentions that The Rural Juror would be her first starring role in a film. Jenna sings as well, and she claims to be a popular Dance Pop superstar overseas, citing a track that became a major hit in a few territories in Europe (#1 in Israel and #4 in Belgium), "Muffin Top." Unfortunately no one in the United States gets a chance to see her perform the song because Liz has the number cut from the show without Jenna knowing - she performs the number after credits and without tape in the cameras. She also sings Whitney Houston's Greatest Love of All when the crew surprises her with a birthday party, which is interrupted by Cerie announcing her engagement, and again when Josh runs in announcing an antique car show out on the plaza. Some of her characters on the show are: "Pam, the Overly-Confident Morbidly Obese Woman", for which she must wear a fat suit and Paris Hilton where "most of the jokes were about the nose." Generally, she fits into the "dumb blonde" stereotype as well as the stereotype of actresses being air headed and self-centered. Off-camera, she is conceited, frequently lies about her age and uses her "sexuality" (i.e. flirting) to get her way with men. She tries to seem smart to her fans and to the general public, even going as far as telling Life and Style magazine her favorite book is the Koran. Sometimes her views get her in hot water with the public, even when she is misquoted; when Maxim asked her about her view on the Iraq War Jenna misheard and thought she was being asked about theater troupes rather than "the troops." When she saw the article afterwards - in which a quote "I hate the troops" was printed - she and Liz were forced to do damage control by placing her on Hardball with Chris Matthews (accidentally confusing Barack Obama with Osama bin Laden), followed by doing a number about America, but in both cases the damage was made even worse than before (the sparklers didn't spin, and they inadvertently showed swastikas).

Press/Gallery: Getting Dressed with Elizabeth Olsen
The star of Wind River and Ingrid Goes West chats with VIOLET GREY about snowmobiles, gun ranges, backseat driving and quote-unquote “sexy makeup”.
VIOLET GREY – Two back-to-back movies premieres. For most actors, this would be a chore. But the atmosphere in Elizabeth Olsen’s suite at the Four Seasons Beverly Hills is decidedly unserious and buoyant. The focal point of the good energy (and the gales of laughter) is Olsen herself, who seems supernaturally good-humored. When pressed—doesn’t this just feel like work?—she protests vigorously. “I actually really love doing my hair and makeup,” she says, “I think it’s really fun.”
It helps that the young actress has a beauty team—makeup artist Gita Bass, hairstylist Mark Townsend, nail artist Michelle Saunders and stylist Sara Slutzsky—that functions more like a group of close-knit friends than professional acquaintances. “I’ll ask them about everything they’re using,” says Olsen of her team, “They usually have multiples of things and give them to me—which is really generous.” She lets out a knowing laugh and jokes, “I just steal from them!”
Another reason for the celebratory vibes: this is inarguably a big moment for Olsen. Her performances in two upcoming films—Ingrid Goes West, a tart commentary on contemporary social media mores, and Wind River, a tense thriller set on an Indian reservation—have garnered the type of critical buzz that typically presages award season recognition. It’s not hyperbolic to expect that, within the next few months, Olsen will be vaulted into another league of stardom.
VIOLET GREY joined Olsen and her team before the Los Angeles premiere of Wind River to get her take on snowmobiles, Uber, mixed drinks and quote-unquote “sexy makeup”.
SUBJECT: Elizabeth Olsen, @elizabetholsenofficial
OCCUPATION: Actress
OCCASION: Los Angeles premiere of Wind River
TEAM: Gita Bass (makeup), Mark Townsend (hair), Sarah Slutsky (styling), Michelle Saunders (nails)
VENUE: The Four Seasons
THE LOOK: Dress by Roland Mouret, jewelry by Ana Khouri, shoes by Dolce & Gabbana.
Tell us about your new films, Wind River and Ingrid Goes West.
I’m really bad at log-lining, but—Wind River is a crime thriller about a girl on a Wyoming reservation who is found raped and murdered. And Ingrid centers on a girl who’s obsessed with an influencer, and stalks her in a Single White Female manner. So they’re very different films! In one I play a federal agent, and the other I’m an Instagram influencer in Venice, California.
What was it like filming Ingrid Goes West with Aubrey Plaza? She’s hysterical.
Ingrid was a lot of fun because when we were filming we tried to make each other break and laugh. But it was also an insane production. We had to be evacuated from where we were filming in Santa Clarita because of a crazy wildfire; our director needed stitches during the shoot; and we started off trying to make a non-SAG film—and then SAG found out so we had to change our entire [crew]. It was kind of a mess. But still, we were focused during filming and i think we all understood the kind of movie we wanted to make. A timely cult classic that represents a moment for this generation.
And Wind River is much more of a classic genre thriller. What was the on-set mood?
It was really crazy. We had to change locations because we were losing the snow as spring crept up on us, and just to go to the bathroom was a 30-minute snowmobile ride there and back. And in order to get to set, we had to be on snowmobiles or Sno-Cats. It wasn’t like taking a car to base camp.
It was fun, and that was really creatively satisfying for all of us. I now actually really love shooting guns—not as a personal thing, but I’d like to do it again for a film. Gun Fu: that’s what they call the action in films that have gun fighting. Everything I did on Wind River I did in a gun range in Utah, whether shooting, standing, or crawling.
With all these premieres, what’s been your favorite recent product discovery?
It’s actually been really helpful to do premieres so I understand what to wear on film. Now I have a list of makeup that I know disappears on film, for when I’m working. Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua foundation is my favourite thing to wear. But then I just got these tinted balms by Jillian Dempsey. They’re for your eyelids but you can put them anywhere. And I really like the colors. It’s kind of idiot-proof, you just put it on your finger and wipe it on your eyelids. Available on VIOLET GREY! Get it now! I really love wet-looking eyes, so I’ll use Eight Hour Cream, or lid gloss. I like it when eyes have a shine to them, I think it’s sexy. And I like feeling sexy. [Olsen drops to a terrifying “sexy” voice]. Like, that’s so sexy.
If you were doing an evening makeup look, what would you wear with it?
I like putting myself together, but if I put on nice makeup, I’ll probably end up not wearing something nice. Because I don’t ever like feeling dressed-up; I always prefer dressed-down.
What’s your getting ready soundtrack?
Sylvan Esso “Die Young.” I know people are into [compiling] Spotfiy playlists, but that’s a lot of time curating. So I just rely on Pandora One.
What’s your pre-game beverage?
I like a Tito’s vodka soda with some sort of lemon or lime. I went through a tequila phase, I go in and out of wine phases—it depends on how gross I want to feel the next day.
What would a great Los Angeles evening look like to you?
My favorite evening in LA is spent having my friends over to my house. I think it’s hard to properly enjoy going out in LA—it’s such a headache trying to figure out how to get home, how to get there. I don’t like getting Ubers at all because I’m a control freak and prefer taking certain shortcuts, and they don’t know where they’re going. And I don’t want to be a backseat driver. So I just don’t. I just go out to dinner. The most exciting thing is when you shut down a restaurant. That’s as exciting as my nights get.
THE LOOK
“Lizzie and I have an awesome dynamic, I love working with her. Collaborating is super-key. [I like to know] what ideas are circling around and what Lizzie is thinking. She’s so fun, so inspiring.
I think the movie feels quite powerful, and the dress seemed to have that same sort of weight. It’s beautiful yet has some of her playfulness and strength. And I love when she feels great in a dress; that’s the ideal. It was a no-brainer. I love Roland, she’s worn him before. He’s an incredible talent and a great guy, and I’m pleased this one worked out so well. The shoes are Dolce & Gabbana, and the jewelry is by Ana Khouri. Actually we always laugh—Lizzie doesn’t have her ears pierced and I have 11 ear piercings. I’m always teasing her like, when are you getting your ears pierced?, but now I think it’s cool she doesn’t. I have to be on my game to come up with interesting options for [her] jewelry.” —SARA SLUTSKY
THE MAKEUP
“So I barely put anything on her skin because she has literally the most flawless skin I’ve ever seen. I just mixed a tiny bit of foundation with some essential oil to give her a glow. I used Armani Luminous Silk Foundation and thinned it down with moisturizer and oils. I used Simple Replenishing Rich Facial Moisturizer because it’s heavier and gives a flawless look when mixed with the Armani.
We decided to go for a really pretty, bronze-y eye. I used my finger to apply a Tom Ford bronze cream shadow to her eye, and then layered an eyeshadow over the top so nothing moves. I lined the inside of her eyes with a dark brown Make Up For Ever pencil. And that’s it. Lots of mascara, but those are her own eyelashes! She has a NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Bahama on her lips, and some lip balm. And a little bronzer on her cheeks: Soleil Tan de Chanel. It’s really natural. I can do her makeup in twenty minutes.” — GITA BASS
THE HAIR
“I have been obsessing about a side braid and I think it was the perfect style for tonight and for the dress that she’s wearing. The reference was Alexander Wang’s Spring 2010 runway. It’s a “hairstyle,” but it’s still loose and young and cool. Which is who she is. We started with a volumizer at the root—the one product I can’t not use is Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray. And we always finish with a Sally Hershberger salt spray for that beachy texture.
What’s the secret to the perfect side braid? Be an Olsen. They really are born with the greatest, most perfect hair I’ve ever worked with. But it’s about getting the texture in the hair first. I’m obsessed with the double-barrel iron from R Session, it creates those imperfect bends in the hair instead of perfect ringlets. So getting that texture in first helps the braid hold throughout the night.” — MARK TOWNSEND
THE NAILS
“We did a really beautiful essie red called Bordeaux. You know sometimes when you go with a dark red it reads as black? For cameras, I always go a shade lighter than your typical Wicked or Vamp. Then it’s dark enough but you can still see red. I think it’s the darkest red can go, and it’s very chic.
Another trip with getting someone ready for a red carpet is to ask whether they’re wearing open- or closed-toe shoes, because if they’re wearing closed-toe shoes you have to do the pedicure first, or the nails won’t dry and they’ll be ruined from walking the red carpet!” — MICHELLE SAUNDERS

CARL’S BLOG: MAMIE, AN OZARK MOUNTAIN GIRL OF COURAGE
9-14-20, Carl love’s Exeter, California
California was everything that Pearl described it to be in her letters. Carl was so impressed with the beauty of the mountains and the valleys. He had never seen this kind of terrain. It was quite different from Arkansas. The mountains were green without trees, not like the mountains in Arkansas that were covered with oak and pine trees. There were beautiful rocks scattered over the green mountains. The valleys were full of beautiful orange and lemon groves. One could see the deep green leaves on the lemon and orange trees miles away. Carl fell in love with the valley and mountains. He thought he could live there forever. The school in Exeter was more advanced in academics than the Westside school system back home in Higden. Carl still remembers seeing his first educational film at the Exeter Elementary School. He still remembers the spider unit and the film that went along with the unit of study. He still remembers the big tarantula spiders in the film. Even though he grew up knowing they were harmless, he still feared them. Carl could learn better when he could see something. I guess you could say, he was a visual learner. The city of Exeter was a small place, but busy because of the many migrant workers who lived in and around the town. The city had a movie theater. Carl’s cousin, Helen Mayben, who was Pearl’s oldest child, sold tickets at the movie theater. In Carl’s opinion, Helen was the prettiest girl he had ever seen. Because she worked at the theater, her brothers, sisters, and cousins could purchase their tickets at half price. This was a big plus for the Barger’s and Mayben’s, since they did not have much money. Going to the movies on Saturday nights, after a hard day’s work in the orchards and cotton fields was more of a treat than ice cream. On weekends when the family was not scheduled to work, they traveled. They enjoyed going to the Sequoia National Park which was located about thirty-five miles from Exeter. The park had some of the biggest Sequoia Trees in the world. One such tree was named General Sherman. General Sherman reached high in the sky. They could not even see the top of the tree. A sign at the foot of the tree said it was the oldest living thing in the world. The Barger’s considered themselves fortunate to experience seeing the oldest living thing in the world. They felt honored to stand in the presence of General Sherman, an experience some people would never see. In Mamie’s opinion, she felt General Sherman represented one infinite example of God’s creation. “Where else can you see an example of God’s greatest?” she said. Mamie’s and Pearl’s families traveled to Wheatland, California, to visit their sister, Martha. Martha lived a little way out of Wheatland in a small community called Rio Osa. She had purchased property in Rio Osa, and most of her children lived around her. Martha, like Pearl, had not seen Mamie in over eight years. When growing up in Arkansas, Martha and Mamie were more than just sisters, they were the best of friends. This visit would give them an opportunity to make up for lots of lost time. While visiting Marta in Rio Osa, Mamie and Pearl stayed with Martha while their children stayed with their cousins who lived near their mother. Although Martha had been in California for several years, she still considered herself a farm girl from the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas. She loved raising cattle, hogs, and chickens. She had several cows on her ten acres that she fed daily.
