My Lovely Human Chapter 2: Beloved

A sigh of contentment was breathed out of the Naga's mouth as he held his beloved in his arms. Risotto moves rather quickly to his large spacious den in excitement, the thought of spending his life with his beloved filled him with desire. The inside of his den is much bigger than an average Naga's den. It was nice and wide and had a big bed made of fur that he collected himself when he goes out to hunt. There was bones and skulls laying around inside the den as well but most of them were near the front entrance of his den for mainly decoration. He appreciate the aesthetic of skulls, enjoying the feel of the dark sockets and bony structure.

Risotto gently places (Y/N) on the king's size bed and drinks up in her beauty. No one was as beautiful as she was. So small, so docile, so kind. He loved her hair, big eyes, round face, and plump lips. How he loved to have her lips around him. His blood red eyes trail down her body, she didn't have the biggest breast but not the smallest either. He wasn't too fussy about that. Risotto places his large hand on her flat stomach and thought how beautiful she be with her stomach all round and swollen with his babies. He gripped her wide hips that are perfect for bearing his children. Risotto growled, his tail swishes excitedly and grips harder until she lets out a small whimper and stops.

"Grr...not yet.." He loosens his hold of her and composes himself. Risotto slithers out of his den and picks up the skull holding it in his hands. The skull was so small in his grip, he moves his long fingers against the rough cheek bones and wondered how soft her face would feel if he caress them. As he was deep in thought from this a voice called out to him, a voice he knew to well.

"Risotto! Where the fuck have you been!?" An angry blonde rushes to him, his hair was tied neatly in braids, icy blue eyes and wore a couple accessories around his neck that were out of gold , especially his long necklace. His scales were dark purple with white streaks that gave a web like design.

"Prosciutto. Lower your voice. You'll wake her up." He grunted and glanced at her. "I told you I was taking care of some troublesome hunters." He placed his skull back down.

"Wha!? Her?" He squinted his eyes and looks over his shoulder to see a young small human sleeping on his bed, a bed that was far too big for her. "Is..Don't tell me that's a human in your den."

Risotto nodded at his question. "Are you fucking kidding me! You know as well as I do how dangerous humans are! Why do you have it here?"

He crossed his arms displeased. "Don't call my beloved an it. She's...different from other humans. She's not like the others."

Prosciutto looks at him with disbelief. Don't tell me that thing is suppose to be his mate? He sighed placing two of his fingers on the bridge of his nose sighing. He opens his mouth about to speak once more until he saw the younger Naga Illuso who is a teenager.

"Capo! You're finally back!" He grins holding a spear in his hand and a bag of fish. "You were gone for a really long time." His hair brown long hair were tied in low braids and had eyes as red as Risotto but it looked like there was more life in his eyes than Risotto. His scales were more bland than the other nagas. His didn't glow as brightly as the others and was a simple beige color.

He nodded. "I just got back today. I was about to head into the village . Come Proscuitto we have matters to discuss with others."

The blonde looks back at the den. He grumbled a bit. It will have to a matter he will have to discuss later with keeping a human in his den. He watches Illuso go back home probably to Formaggio about the amount of fish he got.

Both He and Risotto made their way down to the village where the rest of their kind lived. They were a isolated species that has closed themselves off to the rest of the world due to the confliction with humans eons ago. They did not have a very big population either, in fact their species had one of the lowest numbers in population of this forest.

As they both make their way to the headquarters a lot of Nagas bowed and greeted Risotto with respect and a lot of Nagi saw Risotto and followed him and three of them linked arms with him. "Nero! You finally came back." One spoke out and giggled. the second spoke out next. "Nero do you have time for us please? You been gone for so long." The third agreed and rubs her head against his chest.

Risotto pulls away without looking at them. "I don't have time for this. I have important matters to attend to." He could hear them whining and hearing how much they missed him. He knew how desperate those nagi were.

"Popular as ever capo." A naga with with long blonde choppy hair that covered one eye grins at him. " Shame those cute nagi are perfect candidates for an heir." He licked his lips from the thought . His scales were black with purple circle patterns on it.

Risotto sighed . "Maybe you should spend time with them instead Melone."

Melone lets out a small laugh. "Oh they simply won't do my dear capo! I want the mother of my children to be perfect." Not any nagi would do for him, he had high expectations. He follows both Proscuitto and Risotto in and yelling could be heard. " Ahh..looks like he got Ghiaccio all fired up again." Letting out a small hissing sound at the end of his sentence.

The room was in a disarray , there was milk on the walls and eggs were cracked open on the floor and two nagas fighting. "That's enough. You two clean this mess right now." Risotto speaks in a commanding voice.

"But it's Formaggio ! He started it first!" A loud booming voice was spoken by a male with curly blue hair and red glasses.

"I don't care. Both of you clean this up now." He glares at the both .

"R-Right! c'mon let's just clean it before he gets more mad." The male with a buzzcut hairstyle went to grab the the cleaning supplies and Ghiaccio clicked his tongue against his fangs and went to help clean up the place.

Once the two nagas cleaned up the place to how it was suppose to look before. They could start discussing the meeting . "You sure took your time coming back. Gone for 5 days. You're never gone for that long Capo." Melone spoke.

"Yeah that's true." Formaggio agreed. "

Prosciutto nodded. "Mind telling us what took you so long when you should have been hours later on the same day not 5 days."

Risotto sighed and nodded.

Risotto took it upon himself to take out the hunters that are in their territory and he could not risk the humans finding out about their species again. Humans were ugly disgusting greedy creatures that killed nagas out of fear and take their skin to make purses and take their fangs for profit that was what he thought before he met her, the love of his life.

Risotto had spotted one human that was rather close to the village. Something he must not allow to happen. The hunter was a young male who was smoking a cig. Risotto cringed in disgust. He would do not be a good meal at all. He moves from behind without making a sound and bites his shoulder and the hunter lets out a scream as the vemon was injected into his body and within moments the hunter was gasping for air and was coughing and hacking as he felt so much pain and his heart was pumping faster and faster as the vemon spread throughout the body until his heart couldn't keep up and stopped and didn't see his body move anymore. Risotto had a expressionless face as he watched the hunter perished before leaving him there.

"Wait! We shouldn't kill it! Aren't you suppose to preserve wild life?" A young woman spoke to a hunter and it was none other than (Y/N) who was trying to stop a hunter from killing a garden snake.

A hunter who looked like he was in his 30's looked at her and chuckled . "what gives little missy . We are preserving life . Our life and that's all that should matter. Now give him back. His skin would do good for a purse. Wouldn't you like that? All girls your age fancy those." Risotto hissed and glared at the hunter in disgust, oh how he wanted to end him right then are there.

(Y/N) shook her head holding he garden snake her hands as it wrapped itself around his arm. "The hunter's association is suppose to preserve all life. Even this little guy." She smiles and pets the little snake head.

The hunter looks at her in disgust. "Ugh! Whatever I'll be off . Stay away from the others they are dangerous!" He grabs his belongings and head off to the west side of the forest.

(Y/N) sighs. "They're all the same. " She gently puts the garden snake down . "There now run along now little guy before they find you again." She smiled as she watch the snake return to the wild. She hated how they abuse the system and killed any animal that had nothing to do with them or that they were a threat when they weren't. "Hm? Is someone there?"

Risotto quickly hid from her sight. He was always a master at stealth it was one of his abilities as a naga.

"Hmm..I guess I imagined it . I better get going." She turned her back towards him and headed back into town.

Risotto watches her leave the forest. So there were kind humans too. Humans were ugly and odd looking but she looked so beautiful , her beauty could even rival a goddesses. It was at that moment he had to have her and had taken care of the hunters while he slowly learned more about her. Watching her. Stalking her for those 5 days until that storm took him by surprise and by then it was too late for him to get back to his own village until she saved him too like that harmless garden snake.

Present Day

" That's the reason I was gone for so long . If it wasn't for her I wouldn't be alive." He clasped his hands together and the rest of the naga looked at him like he was crazy.

"A human!? A human of all things saved you!?" Ghiacco flailed his arms in disbelief . Risotto nodded

Melone had a playful grin on his face while formaggio still had a hard time processing this on how and why would Risotto would want to bring a human . Maybe as a pet or food he thought.

Prosciutto crosses his arms. "I don't agree with you bringing a human here. You're placing us in danger like this. But you are the alpha so I'll back off for now." He turns away not fully accepting it. "The minute the human opposes a threat it will die whether you like it or not Risotto."

Risotto nodded fully understanding this. Though he would make sure no harm comes to her not even his closet allies. "You're all dismissed."

(Y/N) groans a bit in her sleep and slowly opens her eyes as her vision slowly clears up. "Nnn.." She pressed her head against the pillows of the bed. It was the comfiest bed she ever laid on. Her vision finally clears up and looks up at the ceiling which was just the cave. "W-Where..? Where am I?" Her eyes widened after realizing that she was not home. She sat up and moves her head around and could see bones scattered on the floor.

"You're awake."

(Y/N) eyes widened and saw the giant serpent and her memory finally clears up . "Ahh!! Y-You! You're that Naga!" She backs up as much as possible on the bed.

"My name is Risotto, beloved." He moves closer to her which causes her to move back more until her back hits the wall.

"W-Where am I?" She started to shiver, her mind was still a bit fuzzy after being squeezed the life out of her earlier. She only remembers bits and pieces of it and was hoping that this was just a nightmare.

"You're in my den, away from human civilization." his tail wraps around her small wrist pulling her close to him making her gasp and wraps his arms around her placing her in his lap. He loved how small she was compared to him .

(Y/N) struggled in his grasp . His tail and scales felt cold and it scared her how easily he can pull her in . "What? Why! " She shook a bit, scared how far away she was from everyone else.

Risotto placed his hand under his chin and tilted up so she was looking up at him . "You're too good for them. Too pure hearted to live with those greedy humans. I mustn't let that happen. not to my mate." He leans forward and kisses her gently. Her lips were so soft and warm . It caught her by surprise and pulls away and Risotto just moves again to kiss her once more.

"W-Wai- mmph! Risotto St-" He kissed her once more and holds the back of her head and kisses much more deeper. She places her hands on his shoulders to try and push him off but couldn't he was so much stronger than she was. He brushes her tongue with his long forked tongue trying to get it in her mouth but closes her mouth and he growls and pushes her on the bed earning a gasp and kisses her once more before she had the chance to close her mouth and his tongue enters her mouth and explores her warm cavern it felt so good. he wrapped his tongue around hers . (Y/N) tightly closed her eyes squirming under his body as their tongues battle in dominance. He unwrapped his tongue around her and pushed his tongue down her throat which caused her squirm even more . His tail wrapped around her hips keeping her still and heard a small moan and deep throat her tongue and could feel himself being turned on more, more so than he has during mating season. He slowly pulled away watching her gasp for air.

My Top 10 Games of 2019

It was pretty hard to narrow down the list this year. 2019 was a lot stronger for video games than 2018 and I feel a LOT more confidant about my picks and GOTY choice. In addition, there were also a lot of indie games not mentioned here that I think I will highlight in another post a bit later. For now, here’s the Top 10.

10. Sayonara Wild Hearts (Simogo)

Sayonara Wild Hearts is something special. Although clocking in rather short at just under an hour long, I would best describe the game as an Album Video Game. Each of the game’s 23 or so levels has its own song. The actual gameplay consists of mostly on-rails segments where you have basic movement and avoid obstacles and collect pickups to boost your score, but every level has a unique take on that concept with major climax levels being full tracks with vocals. It’s incredibly stylistic and tells a heartwarming story about dealing with heartbreak. I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys musical games.

9. Fire Emblem: Three Houses (Intelligent Systems)

Fire Emblem: Three Houses is the first game in the series that managed to grab me. It’s a very competent tactical RPG with one of my favourite casts of characters this year (especially the Black Eagles house). I was consistently impressed the most with just the sheer amount of content and detail that went into it. An unnecessarily large amount of the dialogue is voiced, the second half of each of the three selectable house’s routes are totally unique, and each route takes around 60 hours to complete. I really never thought a Fire Emblem game would be my new most played game on the Switch by a mile but here we are.

8. AI: The Somnium Files (Spike Chunsoft)

Kotaro Uchikoshi’s (creator of the Zero Escape trilogy) latest work might be his finest. AI: The Somnium Files is the game on the list this year with the most heart put into it. Consistently funny and over-the-top, a wonderful cast, and a really well executed sci-fi murder mystery. It makes me hope that Uchikoshi continues to make the kinds of games he wants to make, because you can definitely tell he had the most fun making this one.

7. Resident Evil 2 (Capcom)

Resident Evil 2 is the new gold standard for game remakes. I could go on and on praising it for how good it feels to play, the sound design, and the painstaking detail of recreating the original game from the ground up to be a third-person shooter. Quality of Life changes like the map marking items and telling you when a room is cleared and telling you when it’s okay to throw away key items are such fantastic additions. It gives me really high hopes for the RE3 Remake next year. Capcom’s hotstreak continues.

6. Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice (From Software)

Sekiro rightfully earns its spot as my second favourite FromSoft game. The Souls formula is still there, but the gameplay is fairly different now. Taking Bloodborne’s aggressiveness encouragement another step forward, Sekiro rewards not giving the enemies a chance to breathe more than ever. Boss battles are a tug-of-war of trying to break each other’s posture and perfect blocking to mitigate it. The dodge button pushes you forward by default and you often hope to have your attack blocked more than a it be a direct hit. Some of my favourite FromSoft bosses reside in this game with the final boss perhaps being my favourite overall. Level design is also at its best with the game finally giving you a greater range of movement and verticality with jumping and grappling. There’s even decent stealth mechanics. Sekiro was a really pleasant surprise and I hope they continue The Wolf’s story.

5. Judgement (Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio)

Judgement is a Yakuza game in all but name, and RGG Studio’s first one set in Kamurocho without Kiryu as the main character. After giving up being an attorney, Takayuki Yagami becomes a freelance detective and investigates a series of murders in the city with the help of his former law office and ex-Tojo clan friend Masaharu Kaito. Substories are framed as side cases that Yagami can take on to earn some extra money, and new mini-games like drone racing and the Paradise VR board game are incredible additions. Anyone who is a fan of the Yakuza series should really check this out, and newcomers can jump right in without prior knowledge.

4. Disco Elysium (ZA/UM)

Disco Elysium has some of the best writing I have ever seen in a video game. As an amnesiac detective, you explore the rundown post-wartime district of Martinnaise trying to find who was behind the lynching of a mercenary before the situation gets out of control. What sets Disco Elysium apart from other RPGs in terms of gameplay is its character builds. As there is no combat, the 24 skills that you can put points into when you level up are all social skills. The higher you have various skills leveled, the more you will hear advice from them during conversation trees. A high Authority level will constantly remind you to tell people you are The Law, where a high level in Inland Empire will let you talk to inanimate objects to gain new perspectives. I also feel I have to give a nod to your partner throughout the game, Kim Kitsuragi. I’d rather not give anything away but they could not have written a better character to support you throughout your journey. I’ll likely be thinking about this game for a very long time.

3. Control (Remedy Entertainment)

I think Control flew under a lot of people’s radars until the publicity from the overwhelming number of Game Awards nominations. Control is a game for people who like SCP, psychokinesis powers, cool architecture, and a bit of Alan Wake. It wears its inspirations very blatantly on its sleeve and wraps a very cool story and even better side quests around them. It’s very stylish and has phenomenal lighting. Perhaps this is my Remedy bias but I really really adored this game and featured the coolest moment of the year for me. Please check it out if you get the opportunity.

2. Kingdom Hearts III (Square Enix)

Kingdom Hearts III has been a long time coming and what I think it nails best are the size and scale of the worlds. Olympus is the best its ever been with how much of the area outside the Colosseum you get to explore. The Caribbean is more expansive with boat combat that’s better than it has any right to be. Monstropolis has a great original story with some incredible tie-ins to the Kingdom Hearts plot. There’s a ton of incredible fanservice moments too for everyone waiting to see their favourite characters again. I still think a lot of it is really hype albeit cheesy, and it finally puts to rest an arc that has been going since the very first game. Kingdom Hearts isn’t over, but KHIII wraps a lot of things up in as satisfying of a way as they could for a story so expansive and often times convoluted. It’s very rare when a game that has been anticipated for so long not only doesn’t fumble it, but delivers on what I had hoped for, so I’m really glad it got to finally release this year.

1. Devil May Cry 5 (Capcom)

Speaking of games that I’ve been waiting a very long time for, DMC IS BACK! Every moment of DMC5 is a treat. Dante and Nero are at their most fun to play in this game, and V is a very cool addition both story-wise and gameplay-wise.This is the game from this year that I’ve kept going back to the most whether it’s for getting good at harder difficulties, or playing through bloody palace until floor 70 and give up ,or practicing with different weapons. It makes me happy to know that Platinum haven’t just been relegated to being the character action studio and that Hideaki Itsuno’s still got it. There’s no question that this is my Game of the Year and anyone who loves action games but hasn’t ever jumped into this series really needs to address that because DMC5 alone is worth it.

Devil-sitter May Cry, Ch. 3

Pairing: Dante x F!Reader, Vergil x F!Reader (Undecided)

Words: 2150

Warning: Cuteness, Defensive/protective Nero

Story Summary: Low on cash and desperate for a job, you reply to a flyer for a babysitting position. Little did you know that the opportunity to watch over two special boys would bring your life so much mayhem and adventure…and, perhaps, a chance at a family of your own.

A/N: First day on the job! How does the morning go down? Guess you gotta read to find out...!

Chapter 3 - Early Morning Start

Waking up at 5:30 a.m. had never brought upon such relief and excitement as it did that particular morning.

The brothers of Devil May Cry had asked you to be at the shop by around seven, and given your one-hour commute, the early morning wake-up was a necessary evil you would gladly deal with.

A hasty breakfast of toast and the last few dredges of orange juice in your fridge were downed quickly as you rushed to get ready for the day ahead. You flung your bag over your shoulder, ensuring for the third time since waking that your bus pass was in the front pocket, and practically ran out the door and out of the complex to the bus stop just down the block.

Devil May Cry was on the other side of Red Grave City, and you happened to live near the outskirts of the bordering town. Luckily, the bus route had a drop off close to the shop, barely a five minute walking distance that gave you time to, once again, calm the nervous energy that had been building during your ride.

First day jitters were always the worst, but having met the boys beforehand gave your mind a sense of ease you were glad to have.

You approached the shop with time to spare, enough to ask any last-minute questions you had about caring for the boys. Just as you made to open the door, it swung out, revealing a grinning Dante on the other side.

"Ah, right on time," he mused, and you barely had a moment to wonder how he knew you were right there in the first place before you were being ushered inside.

"We got an easy job lined up for today," he began straight away, "so we should be back before dinner time, if everything goes smoothly. If not, then the boys will be sure to hound you for something decent to eat, so anything in the fridge is fair game."

You nodded along as Dante gave you the general run-down of how the day usually progressed, as well as giving you some tips for general things that would come in handy for caring for the boys. He even ensured you knew the basics of answering the phone, just in case a call came in.

"I think Vergil wrote some other things down," Dante mused after a moment, shifting some papers around on the much neater-looking desk with a bit of confusion.

"On your left," Vergil spoke up suddenly, nearly causing you to jump out of your skin with how close he was. Where did he even come from?!

"You're really good at that sneaking thing," you said aloud, flustered from having been surprised.

"So I've been told," he all but deadpanned as he moved to the opposite side of the desk and plucked a small notebook from under a few sealed envelopes.

"I've not written much," he said, "only the most important details. See to it that V's schedule is kept to."

Vergil held the small notebook out to you, of which you took immediately from his grasp. You thanked him sincerely, of which earned you a small nod from the intimidating man.

"I think you've got it from here," Dante grunted as he hefted what looked like a massive sword over his shoulder with ease, one you hadn't realized had been leaning against the desk this whole time. You were sure your eyes were as big as saucers at seeing such a display, forgetting momentarily that you had been hired by demon hunters to watch over their sons.

"Y-yeah, of course," you assured, rattling off the few things that deemed to be highlighted. "Uh, Nero is high-energy, so keep him snacked up and occupied; inhaler for V is in the second desk drawer; outside play after lunch; no naps after three, or bedtime will be hell. And keep to V's schedule, got it."

"She may survive us, yet," Dante chuckled as he glanced over to Vergil, who answered with a quirk of a smile.

You only had that moment to really study the twins and their attire, how they both wore full length coats made of well-worn leather, hands braced with fingerless gloves. Instead of a massive sword like Dante's, Vergil held a sleek katana within his grasp, elegant in its design, from what you were able to see of it.

They were so very different.

"Nero and V are awake," Vergil informed as he and Dante moved toward the front doors. "They will be ready for breakfast."

"I'll get to it, then," you assured, watching the twins head out. As a final thought, you couldn't help but wish them luck on their hunt.

"Be careful out there!"

They both turned to fix you with oddly amused looks, Dante giving a playful scoff as Vergil simply continued out the door.

"Don't miss us too much, babe," Dante parted with a wink, and just like that, you were left alone in the main room of Devil May Cry, both a business and home to two demon hunters and their young sons, of whom you would be watching over for the foreseeable future.

What a world you lived in.

You glanced down at the small notebook in your hand, flipping it open to find Vergil's neat penmanship inside. True to his word, there were bullets of immediate information, such as specific times V usually did specific things. Medicine and stretches after breakfast, usually a small nap after outside play, and more stretches right before dinner.

Bedtime routine wouldn't be necessary for your first day on the job, but it was nice that Vergil had the forethought to jot everything down for when you would inevitably need it. You'd been told they had hectic schedules and often responded to calls as they came in, so there were certain to be days you would be on night watch, as well.

Closing the notebook, you placed it within your bag for safekeeping, hefting the tote off your shoulder and leaving it in the chair behind the desk for the time being.

The kitchen entrance was just to the left side of the desk, obscured somewhat by a slight wall partition. You made your way into the area, finding the kitchen and dining area modest in size and pretty well kept. The counters and stove top were clean, as was the table, yet there were some dishes left in one side of the double sinks from what looked like their dinner the night previous.

Well, they were busy, single dads who ran a business together - what did you honestly expect?

Already set on the task at hand, you began shifting the dishes about as you filled the opposite side with warm, soapy water. You'd be dirtying some, anyways, so there wasn't really any reason to leave soiled plates and pans and cutlery lying about if you were already going to wash what you used.

It was as you were sliding the dirty dishes into their makeshift bubble bath to soak that you heard movement from behind, a yawn and the soft little thumps of feet hitting hardwood.

You turned, smiling sweetly at finding Nero and V standing just outside the kitchen, groggy-eyed and still sporting their pajamas.

"Good morning, you two," you greeted warmly, shifting into babysitter mode, or as your best friend liked to call it, your "mother hen" mode.

"Morning," Nero replied, followed by a grumbled, sleepy version of V's own greeting as he yawned and rubbed at his eyes sleepily.

It seemed he was a bit more on the sluggish side, but Nero took it in stride and carefully led V by the hand toward the table, ensuring his cousin had made it into the chair before taking up the one right beside him.

Frankly, it was an incredibly cute display, one you had a feeling you would be seeing quite a lot of in the future.

"Anything in particular you boys want for breakfast?" you asked as you opened the fridge, finding a decent variety of foods for both meals and snacks. "I was thinking maybe omelets-"

"Oh, spinach and cheese and bacon!" Nero shouted out excitedly, hands fisted against the table in an eager display. "V likes ham and cheese in his."

"Yeah? Well, I think I can manage that just fine. How about some juice?"

"Orange juice!"

"Apple, please."

You grabbed the two containers and set them on the counter, rummaging through the upper cabinets until you came across the cups. You poured each juice a little over halfway to avoid any major spills and handed them over, orange for Nero, and apple for V.

They both thanked you and smiled big, Nero almost immediately downing half his cup's worth while V sipped at his as he slowly continued to blink away the lingering sleepiness he held.

Satisfied that the boys were placated for the moment, you went about starting breakfast, gathering all the ingredients and rummaging around to find the utensils necessary to cook with. Lucky for you, it wasn't too hard to find what you needed, and within minutes, the kitchen was smelling of fried bacon and ham pieces.

As you cooked, you could hear Nero talking animatedly to V about the dream he had last night, going into vivid detail about the monsters he fought on a far-off planet.

It still amazed you just how vibrant a child Nero was, especially after seeing his bashful demeanor upon your first meeting. It really did seem like he was just wary of new people, not necessarily shy, just guarded. Once he'd gotten a chance to be around you, it had been such a jarring change into seeing his true personality, and it was largely thanks to V's eagerness to include Nero in what he had been doing.

You continued to muse on your thoughts while cooking, plating up the omelets as they finished. You then made your way back to the table and placed their respective meals in front of them, once again heralding thanks and sweet grins as both of them dug in.

Satisfied, you went back to the double sinks, going about washing the dishes that had been soaking. Luckily, there weren't too many, and the stuck-on bits were washing away with relative ease.

"Aren't you going to eat, too?" V asked suddenly.

"I already had breakfast before I got here," you assured, turning to see that Nero had nearly devoured his omelet, already over halfway finished with his meal.

You were suddenly glad you had made his out of two eggs instead of just one.

V stared at you for a long moment as if contemplating something, but eventually tucked back into his food with a little smile. You paused to refill their cups with juice and handed over napkins for messy mouths, moving back to finish off the previous night's dishes and beginning on the ones you had just sullied..

When you turned back to see if V had finally finished so that you could gather their plates, you were met with Nero eating half an omelet, and V missing his plate.

"Whoa, hey!" you startled, catching the boys' abrupt attention. "Nero, isn't that V's?"

Nero's baby blues narrowed immediately in a defensive way, but V was quick to cut in.

"I was finished! I got full," he said, though you were momentarily doubtful.

"You sure? You didn't eat very much," you gently questioned.

"I don't really eat like Nero does," he supplied with a little smile. "Uncle Dante says he's got lots of energy that needs lots of fuel, but I don't have that."

"And that's okay," Nero defended rather vehemently, "because you can still do lots of things, and I can help finish them. Like breakfast. And races in the park."

"Alright, alright, I understand," you appeased, though it was something that was still cause for some concern. "I'm not angry. I'm still learning how you guys do things, so be patient with me, and I'll keep a willing and open mind, okay? If there's something I need to know, don't hesitate to tell me."

V nodded as Nero gave a somewhat affirmative hum, though he still seemed a bit defensive, perhaps still thinking he was getting in trouble. Whatever the case, you cleared the table once he finished off the rest of V's omelet, leaving behind their juice cups, and made back to the soapy water.

"Why don't you two go get dressed for the day, and we can do V's morning stretches before finding something fun to play. Sound good?"

Both V and Nero seemed on board with the plan, both scooting out of their seats with more vigor than they came into the kitchen with, finally up and at 'em and ready for the day.

Something told you that you had your work cut out for you.

where did Vergil's black coat in DMC 5 come from

Realistically speaking: Given that everyone’s clothing is generally darker in color, it’s probably just a color palette / design choice to further differentiate characters / possibly set up Nero as the true blue oni / maybe set up a potential downfall scenario for Nero if you really squint because like father like son. Also potentially done for ironic reasons, since black is usually associated with evil and yet Vergil is at his highest moral point ever at the end of DMC5. Black is usually symbolic of death and rebirth, so that’s something to consider, too.

There are some fun theories floating around though! (Link is sfw and goes to r/DevilMayCry).

I had personally just assumed Vergil used V’s clothes when reforming (since his coat looks pretty badly tattered up at the start of the game) and it’s just a little nod to everything V goes through. There’s absolutely no evidence to support that or any of these theories, but that’s just the most logical conclusion my mind came to when playing. Lol.

Threshold of Space - Chapter 3 Aftermath

-Her head was throbbing when she opened her eyes. Nevertheless, she tried to get up to look around a little and find a chance to escape. However, moments later she noticed that someone - she strongly assumed it was the Romulan who knocked her out - had tied her to a pole. Cursing him in her thoughts, she tried to free herself but quickly realized that it was of no use. Then she’d have to wait until someone came to get her.

She had no idea how long she had been sitting there until she was approached by one of her captors. Her heart started beating faster, one part of her was afraid of what would happen while the other was happy about a chance to escape. However, she didn’t know what she was supposed to do if she actually managed to get rid of him. After all she had no idea how the ship was built and all she knew was that she needed to get off it. Maybe they had escape pods she could use? By now the Romulan reached her and freed her arms. Somehow she had imagined he’d pull her with him, instead she was yanked up and pressed against the pole.

“Leave me alone” she hissed as she felt his hands on her hip, having an idea what exactly he had in mind. “I bet if your master hears about this, you’re screwed”

“My only order is not to kill you and bring you to Nero so that he can beam you down to earth when it’s being destroyed. I wasn’t told what I can’t do with you” His fingers laced in her hair and pulled her head aside.

“Earth’s got a much better defense than Vulcan. This won’t be easy. At all” she growled and winced when she felt his breath on her neck. Then she decided that was enough and knocked her head against his, simultaneously kicking her knee between his legs. Hoping the pointed tips of his ears were as sensitive as the one of Vulcans, she pinched it with her finger nails. He let out a loud scream and went to his knees, trying to get away from her hand. Carissa grinned “Perks of having a Vulcan boyfriend” she chuckled as she kicked him another couple of times until she was sure that he wouldn’t be able to follow her in the next few minutes. Since the red of her uniform was eye catching, she even stole his coat and wrapped it around her shoulders. Maybe she wouldn’t be spotted from afar like that. She also took his weapon. After delivering another few kicks she ran away, looking around if she could see Pike somewhere so that she could free him as well. Without an idea where she was supposed to go, she just ran along the corridors, hoping she wouldn’t run into someone. But of course the ship wasn’t empty, so after a couple of minutes she heard footsteps. She hid behind a large machine, only focusing on the sounds. Luckily, it seemed to be only one person. Taking a deep breath, she raised her weapon and as she saw that the Romulan was almost past the machine, she lunged at him, knocking the gun against his skull. Before she knew it, her opponent threw her to the ground. A shriek of surprise left her mouth and turned into a painful moan as he kicked her stomach.

“Die, Starfleet officer” he growled. Much to her luck he must have dropped his weapon when she jumped at him, so he had to find other ways to kill her. He picked her up by her neck and squeezed it with both hands. Once again she went for the ears, making him loosen the grip enough so that she could tear his hands away from her. She went to her knees, coughing and holding her neck. She tried to crawl between his legs and hit his middle with her hand when she was in an optimal position. After she was past him, she got up and continued running. That was more difficult than she thought because her lungs never seemed to get enough air. Her hair was grabbed and she almost fell over. The Romulan from earlier shoved her against the nearest post with such a force that made her black spots in front of her eyes. A fist collided with her jaw and her head hit the metal behind her again. Her hand shot to her head and she felt his hands wrapping around her neck again. When she threw a short glance at him, she could she a small smirk on his face. This time she was too far away to hurt his ears, so she tried to get rid of his arms but to no avail. Suddenly, he let go of her and she tried to stagger forward and try to fight him again when she felt her knees sagging in. Before she went to her knees, she saw that the Romulan obviously didn’t feel any better and went to the ground as well. But in contrast to her, he lay there motionless. Before she could even figure out what she was supposed to do she heard her name being called.

“Spock” she choked out upon looking up and seeing him holding out his hand towards her. When she made no move to take it, he crouched down in front of her and pulled her into a tight hug, burying his face in the crook of her neck. Feeling tears of exhaustion in her eyes she leaned her cheek against his shoulder and tried to catch her breath.

“It is very pleasant to see you” he said quietly and she made a faint sound of agreement. “Have you been severely injured?”

“Mhh” she murmured “Not that much” he lifted her head and cradled her face to look at her, then placed his lips on hers. When he leaned his forehead against hers, she couldn’t help but smile a little. He rarely showed this much affection in such a short time. “No reason to rush things” she joked.

“Oh there you are. I thought you were crazy when you turned and darted away as if stung by… What the fuck?!” she glanced past the Vulcan to see Jim standing behind them, panting and supporting himself against his thighs. Much to her dismay Spock pulled away and helped Carissa up, ignoring the other cadet’s bedazzled look.

“We ought to leave” he urged, then looked back to his girlfriend “Are you in a state to run?”

“I’ll see” she replied. He gave a nod and jogged off, still holding her hand that she had no choice but to follow him. Only seconds later everything in her body was protesting but she tried not to show it. They needed to get away from here. After what seemed like an eternity, her boyfriend slowed down and Carissa saw a ship in front of them “Are we gonna steal that?” she asked “What about Captain Pike?”

“Cadet Kirk will take care of him”

“O-okay” she turned back to Kirk as they entered the ship. “Oh wow, I have the feeling that this isn’t a Romulan ship… oh hey, look at that cool bubble” she smiled and went to the middle of the ship where she had spotted the funny looking red bubble and had to refrain herself from touching it. She felt hands on her shoulder and was carefully pulled away from where she stood

“It is better if you keep a certain distance to the red matter”

“The red matter?”

“Yeah apparently that’s the thing that caused the black hole that destroyed Vulcan” Jim explained. The ship computer seemed to have switched on and welcomed Spock.

“Okayyyy?!” she glanced at Spock who stared at the ship in disbelief.

“Well that’s weird” Jim said with a shrug and went past them, while Spock asked the computer about his details. She frowned when it explained that it was commissioned by the Vulcan Science Academy in the 24th century. Was there a mistake or did the ship really come from the future? Suddenly she found Spock gone and hurried after him.

“It appears that you have been keeping important information from me” he confronted Jim.

“And what’s that about you and Clarissa?”

“Carissa” she corrected

“Your question does not relate to the mission, therefore I have no comment on the matter”

“Fine. You’ll be able to fly this thing, won’t you?” Kirk inquired.

“Something tells me I already have” this confused Carissa even more. Until now she had just believed that Spock had already flown this ship but apparently not. So what was going on?

“Good luck” Jim walked away when Spock called his name.

“I would prefer if you took Carissa with you and kept an eye on her”

“What?” she crossed her arms “I’m staying with you, of course.”

“Carissa, the overall likelihood that our plan succeeds is less than 4.3 percent. If you go with him, your chances of survival are higher than with me”

“You do know you’re sending me back to the Romulans, don’t you? Beside, screw chances, I’m not going anywhere!”

“You being with him would also increase Cadet Kirk’s chances of survival in case he is confronted by Romulans”

“God, there are days I feel like I’m talking to a wall. Besides, when I am with them I probably have a higher chance of being harmed further so no thanks” she muttered and chuckled as she heard Kirk murmur in agreement.

“Look” he said “I don’t know why but obviously she wants to stay with you, so why don’t you let her?”

“This ship was designed to be administered by one person. Therefore, her presence here is unnecessary” she sighed.

“That’s not the moment to discuss this. I can decide for myself and I’d rather die than stepping one foot onto that Romulan ship again! And you see, I might actually die with you, so guess what?” Jim made a hand movement that said as much as ‘there you go’. Finally her boyfriend agreed and Jim left after assuring Carissa that she needn’t to worry because the plan would work.

“What exactly is the plan?” she asked after he had left the ship.

“We need to destroy the drill and draw the Narada away from Earth so that the Enterprise can beam us back on board before we launch the red matter onto the ship. Since Cadet Kirk needs to find Captain Pike, it is down to me to buy him some time”

“Oh alright” she watched as he steered the ship away from the Romulan one after blasting a hole into it. “Is there anything I can do?”

“No, as I already said, this ship was designed for one person so I am able to do everything myself”

“Okay. And should I… I don’t know maybe prepare the red matter so that we can use it afterwards?”

“That will not be necessary”

“But… how are you trying to launch it at the Narada then?” he didn’t answer and she started to figure it out “No. No, don’t tell me we’re crashing this ship onto theirs. That’s madness. They won’t be able to beam us back in time”

“That is why I wanted you to go with Cadet Kirk. Because the Narada has longer than this ship does” she shook her head

“Even if I had known that, I wouldn’t have changed my mind” he looked at her “And don’t you even dare telling me how illogical this decision was or whatever”

“I did not plan to comment on this at all” he started firing onto the metal cord that held the drill in place

“Oh” she watched how the drill finally came off and fell down. She only hoped that no one would be killed when it arrived at the surface.

“However, I cannot help but admit that a part of me feels a form of contentment due to your presence” she made an approving sound.

“I appreciate you telling me this. I know it must be hard for you to admit your feelings and talk about them” she placed a hand on his arm. He was about to reply when Nero’s face appeared on a little screen in front of them

“Spock, I should have killed you when I had the chance. But know that Carissa will be joining me at any moment and then you can watch her die” Spock looked at his girlfriend and she leant closer to him so that the Romulan could see her as well

“I don’t think so. Unfortunately for you I found out that Romulan ears are quite sensitive as well so I managed to escape”

“Fire on that ship! I want them dead. Dead. Now!” Nero shouted

“Bad kitty” she scolded him like she did with her cat when he did something he wasn’t allowed. The communication broke off and Spock moved over a little

“Sit down and hold tight” he said and Carissa followed his instruction, knowing he’d soon fly evasive maneuvers. That was the case but only a couple of seconds later he went into Warp.

“Do you think he’ll follow us?”

“He will. After all you managed to make him angry enough to forget about anything else. Which is our luck because he would never make the choice to follow us if it was not based on emotions like anger” she smiled.

“See, it’s good you took me with you so I could make him angry” she pressed a kiss to his cheek what made him look at her with something like amusement. Not much later, they went out of Warp and he flew a U-turn, directly towards the Narada that had dropped out of overlightspeed as well. “Do you reckon he’ll figure out what we’re trying to do?”

“I suppose he is not that ignorant” as it seemed also the computer seemed to have realized what they were doing and warned Spock that he was out to collide with the Narada

“Guess what, that’s exactly what we want, computer” Carissa chuckled “Ah it seems like Nero knows” again he was firing at them and again they got a warning from the computer that if the ship was hit, the red matter would be ignited. She looked at him “What now? We’re too far away from the Narada so it’ll only kill us” suddenly a ship appeared and blasted away all the Romulan missiles so that their path was cleared.

“Enterprise” Spock called the ship “Here is Spock”

“Here’s Scotty, Sir”

“I have Cadet Wiley on board with me and request you beam her back onto the ship”

“Aye”

“What are you doing?”

“Sir, I cannae beam her back alone. It’s either both of you or no one. Yer too close to each other” as the hull of the Romulan ship came closer, she dug her fingers into Spock’s arm and shortly after felt that she was being beamed somewhere. She only hoped it was the Enterprise’s doing, not Nero’s. When she realized that she was in the transporter room of the Starfleet ship with her boyfriend still beside her she breathed out in relief. Luckily, also Jim and Pike had made it. As it seemed, Spock was already on his way back to the bridge, pulling Carissa along when they almost ran into people from the Med Bay. When the Vulcan let go of her hand, she felt disappointed but knew why he did it. It wasn’t good if people saw them holding hands.

“There is no reason for you to come to the bridge with me” he told her without even looking back

“Firstly, I was assigned to the bridge for all I know. Secondly, I think I made my point obvious when I said that I want to stay with you” they arrived at the bridge only seconds before Jim, who ordered to hail Nero. Why was he giving orders and not Spock? After all he was made Captain. Then she got even more things to wonder about as Jim (whose real name apparently was James as she just learned) offered Nero to evacuate his people. She obviously wasn’t the only one who was confused as her boyfriend started talking to Jim (or James). Luckily, Nero already spat that he’d rather relive Romulus’ end over and over again than accepting their help.

“Oh that’s a bummer” Carissa said, glaring at him “I was hoping we could repay you your hospitality… then I have no choice but to say goodbye. I don’t know how you Romulans do it, so I’ve got to do it the human way” she showed him her middle fingers “Go to hell” she felt the surprised looks of most people on her and she took a step back with a sheepish smile. Where had that come from?

“I can only agree with Carissa” she smiled as he finally seemed to have realized her name was not Clarissa. “Arm phasers and fire everything we got” he walked away from the screen and sat down in the Captain’s chair as the Enterprise started firing at the Narada, which finally got swallowed by the black hole. She slightly raised her fist in triumph. But then all her enthusiasm wore off when she heard that they were too close to the singularity as well and would be swallowed by it as well. As it seemed there was nothing they could to, the ship was already on maximum Warp. Great. She was starting to get angry at Kirk for ordering to fire at the Narada instead of leaving instantly. But then Scotty from the engineering seemed to have an idea, detonation something and creating a blast that could push them away from the black hole. Only now she realized that maybe it was better if she sat down as well and quickly took a seat in the nearest empty chair, grabbing it as she had done before they left the dock on Earth. Somehow she had a feeling as if years had passed since then, but she knew that it probably was only about a day or two. She’d have to ask her boyfriend, after all he must have been able to keep track of the time. “Sulu?” Kirk said after he had made sure everyone on the bridge was alright “Let’s go home”

For some reason, Carissa felt odd about being back. It was, as if everything had changed. At least she had heard the full story of what had happened by now: Nero was from the future, just after his home planet had been destroyed. And apparently a future version of Spock had promised them to save Romulus but came too late so Nero had sworn to get revenge. A part of her felt dumb for not realizing it, it was a plausible explanation and answered all her questions. However, shortly after she felt new questions arising. Did this mean that a new timeline was created? Was there a possibility to restore Vulcan? What would the older version of her boyfriend do, travel back to his own time or stay here? She soon realized that the easiest way to have her questions answered was talking to the time traveler. Besides, she had noticed that she still was in possession of the photograph Nero had thrown at her and she figured it was his and that he wanted it back. A doctor had given her a sick leave for the next day so she wanted to use it to talk to the older Spock. But before that she wanted to make sure her boyfriend was alright but as it seemed he could be found nowhere so she decided to do that later because she feared that his future self could leave soon. When she heard that he agreed to the meeting she nevertheless was a little surprised.

“Hi uh…” she greeted, trying her best to offer him the traditional Vulcan greeting “My name is Carissa Wiley and well… I was asking to see you.” he returned the greeting

“I know who you are, Carissa” suddenly she remembered the photograph

“Oh yeah… right” and she wasn’t even so sure if it was a good idea to come here “Sorry if I am bothering you… I actually only came because I think I got something of yours” she pulled out the photograph and saw how he raised an eyebrow as he carefully took it from her.

“I thought it gone when Nero took it from me” his index finger traced over the part of the picture that showed her. “Besides you could never bother me, I can even admit that it fills me with joy to see you again” This made her feel a twinge in her chest

“Did…did… was she... I-I mean was I, the other I with you on this mission? Did Nero… kill her?”

“No, she was not. I have lost her one hundred and two years before these incidents”

“Oh” she wasn’t sure if she felt sorry for him or if it was because it concerned herself “May-may I ask how it happened?”

“We were on a mission when another ship of the Federation appeared out of nothing. Of course we thought nothing by it, not even when our tries to contact them were not answered. By the time I discovered that the other ship had been infiltrated by the enemy, it was already too late” he looked at the photograph again “Carissa was in the engine room with a couple of cadets. They were all killed when the ship was fired at.”

“I’m sorry to hear that. I mean not because it concerns me… and I know that you… I mean your younger self always said he doesn’t want compassion… but-but I can’t help it. Sorry”

“There is no need to apologize for your emotions. You are human and therefore cannot control them as we can. I am sure that my younger self is aware of this. He will need you, we both have lost so much. And I fear I am the one who owes you an apology, it was my doing you got into this perilous situation in the first place”

“If you’re trying to say that it is your fault that Romulus was destroyed or what Nero did because of that… it’s not. You wanted to help and you did everything to do so, I know that. It’s not your fault you weren’t there in time”

“That is one thing I have always loved so much about her, she always believed in the good of everyone and tried to help them. If more people were like you, the galaxy would be at peace. I am sure she would have made a splendid ambassador as well”

“Yeah, that’s something my diplomacy professor keeps telling me all the time. He believes that would have been more my thing than a member of Starfleet” Carissa shrugged.

“If I recall correctly, the reason for your visit was not just to give me back my property but to ask me some questions”

“Yes, unless you don’t want to…”

All too soon she had to leave for dinner. She had to admit that she was glad that Spock wanted to stay in this timeline because she had grown very fond of him in the few hours she had talked to him about almost everything, from how her life had been in their timeline (though he didn’t tell her too much, it was still her own life after all). After dinner, she tried to find her boyfriend again but as it seemed he refused to see anyone and she couldn’t insist without making their relationship official. She knew that if he really needed her, he’d come to her even if he was a dickhead. But she could understand why he didn’t want to see anyone, she too felt the same way because she first needed time to cope with everything. And for him it was even worse. Spock’s future self had told her that they had lost their mother when Vulcan was destroyed. Besides, she knew that she would see him the following day in the lesson anyway.

Her first day of school didn’t start all too well. When she arrived at the diplomacy classroom she was being pestered with questions about her ‘adventure’ in outer space and if what they heard was true. She tried to dodge the questions as good as she could.

“Look, I’ve spent about one hour aboard the bridge of Enterprise, but passed out just after we got into Warp. Then I was abducted by a criminal Romulan who came from the future and he wanted to kill me because he sought revenge. He made me watch the destruction of Vulcan, I got hit, knocked out and one of them came too close for my liking and another one tried to strangle me twice before I was saved. Then I helped saving earth from being swallowed into a black hole by being part of a suicide mission before we were saved in the last second and then were almost swallowed by the black hole we created... So I hope you can forgive me if I don’t want to talk about ‘my adventure’ right now…” that helped and her classmates left her alone. But the real shock came when the lesson started. Nine seats were empty. The seats of nine cadets who had been on the other space ships that were destroyed by Nero. Suddenly she felt more hatred towards the Romulan and felt tears in her eyes. Her thoughts drifted off quite a lot during the lesson and she got two rebukes from the professor

“Oh, hey Wiley” someone called after they left the classroom. She sighed when she recognized Oliver, one of her worst bullies. “Looks like someone was naughty and is about to get punished” he shoved her “Suddenly your lover isn’t happy with you anymore” she moved away from him

“You’re just jealous that I’m better at diplomacy. But if I see you talking to a fellow cadet like this…. I can understand why you’re failing this class. Maybe you should get some… special tutoring if you know what I mean” she grinned as she turned around

“Oh yeah? If this was about failing you should get into closer contact with Professor pointy-ear”

“That sounds like a good idea” she replied coolly. “I should ask him” then she walked away, pretty surprised that she only felt annoyance at the suggestion.

Her problems increased in exobiology. She quickly discovered that she wasn’t able to finish the essay they were given last week and got a reprimand.

“Now, I want you to write me an extra essay for next week on the biological similarities and differences between Romulans and Vulcans” she started laughing.

“I can already give you my conclusion now: To sum it all up, the situation can be seen similar to different human species. While the Romulans stayed on the primitive basis of the Neanderthals, Vulcans have developed to Homo sapiens. And for all I know you set up an essay to get a conclusion, isn’t that right? Besides, I have been captured by Romulans only two days ago, so yeah… I guess I know more about them than the rest of the class and can’t be objective towards them. That’s also the reason I couldn’t finish my essay”

“Then it should be no problem for you to write that essay and present it to your fellow cadets. And I must warn you, Cadet Wiley, next time you will watch your tone” she looked down.

“Of course, I’m sorry, Professor” luckily he left and started talking about the contents of their lesson; the Romulan anatomy. At the end of the class she was pretty pleased with herself and her contribution to the lesson; now her whole class knew of the weakness in Romulans’ ears. As it seemed not even the professor knew of this what made her even prouder. On her way to the next lesson she was asked questions again, this time her classmates seemed to be in awe and probably had realized that the mission had not really been a picnic. Much to her surprise, Spock wasn’t in the classroom when she entered. Instead there was a professor she had only seen once or twice before.

“Professor Spock is tied up with business matters from the mission at Vulcan a few days ago” they were told.

“Tied up with business my ass” Oliver muttered “I bet he’s crying in a corner because his planet’s gone. No wait, he probably doesn’t even care”

“Take that back!” Carissa growled “What would you do if Earth was destroyed, huh? Besides, it was his doing that nothing happened to you”

“Oh really?”

“Yes, I have seen it with my own eyes”

“I thought you were captured by Romulans at that time”

“No, then I was already gone and helped them destroy the drill”

“You helped? Don’t make me laugh. You can’t even finish your homework properly, let alone save a planet”

“You know what? I wish that drill had hit you. Well, maybe it has, because I doubt you can be that stupid by nature”

“Cadet Wiley” she heard the professor’s voice “Is there something you would like to share with us?”

“I uh… Oliver Moore was making mean comments and jokes about the end of Vulcan and I told him that this is no laughing matter”

“That’s not what happened, uncle. Okay, I made a comment about the end of Vulcan but it only was a fact, not a joke or what she claimed. She overreacted and was the one who was mean to me and told me she wished I was dead”

“Is that true, Cadet Wiley?”

“No, I didn’t say I wish he died”

“You said you wanted that drill to hit me”

“Yes, that it knocked you out. Not killed you, besides that was just an expression of anger when you called me a liar”

“That is enough, Cadet Wiley, I demand to speak you after the lesson” she sighed. The lesson was bad but the talk afterwards was worse and left her in tears. She had the feeling that she was treated incorrectly and that the substitute teacher was biased because Oliver was his nephew as she had to find out.

All the stress and bad things that happened during the day only faded away when she noticed a message from her boyfriend on her PADD. He wished to see her in his office after dinner. Somehow she had the feeling this didn’t mean anything good. Nevertheless, she was looking forward to it and quickly ate dinner. Before she knocked at his door, she took a deep breath.

“Come in” carefully she opened the door and saw how he got up from his desk. Quickly, she closed the door and approached him, cupping his face

“Hey” his hands took hold of her wrists. “I heard you were busy today?” although she wanted to ask him how he was doing but she knew him well enough to know that she wouldn’t get an answer she wanted to hear.

“Yes, I had much work to take care of. What about you? How are your injuries doing?”

“Better. The medicine helped but I should go to the sickbay again tomorrow so that they can make sure everything’s alright again. As for my day… well” she started telling him of all the rebukes she had gotten in the morning, more than she had in all her time at the academy before.

“What is troubling you?”

“I just started to wonder if everything that happened in the past days has changed me too much”

“I doubt that it will have a permanent negative effect on your career if that is what you are afraid of. This presumably is merely the aftermath of the incidents, it is only natural that you are feeling different now”

“Yeah. I guess if I’m getting used to this again, everything will be normal again. A-and what about you? I mean… with everything that has happened… is there anything I can do for you?”

“No, there is not. In fact, no one can do anything against it. It has happened and I have to accept that” she nodded

“If you do need me anyways… I am here, okay?” she gently stroked his cheek with her thumb.

“I doubt that I will have to accept your offer but I do appreciate your willingness to help”

“It’s self-evidently” she replied as she stood on her tiptoes to peck his lips. To her dismay he quickly pulled away but a part of her understood. He obviously needed time “You mentioned that you had something to tell me?” she said, deciding to chance the topic. He nodded and offered her a seat

“After careful consideration I have made the decision to leave the Academy and join the crew of the Enterprise instead.”

“Oh. When… when will you be leaving?”

“They have not set a date yet, but it will take at least two months to repair the ship”

“So you will continue teaching in this time?”

“Affirmative” she nodded

“Well you being gone will take the only pleasant part of the class away…” she chuckled “Just-just promise that you will come back as often as you can. I-I mean don’t feel obliged to actually see me but just… I don’t know… let me know how you’re doing”

“Carissa, there is something else I need to tell you” she absolutely did not like his tone. She knew that she wouldn’t like what he was about to say.

“What is wrong?”

“There is nothing wrong. But I believe it is better if we ended our relationship”

“What?” she shrieked. “Why? Did… did I do something wrong? What?”

“No, it has nothing to do with your behavior at all. This is about me”

“Bu-but why? If you need time, that’s okay. I mean… I can stay away from you a little until you are feeling better if that is what you want”

“This is not what I meant either”

“Then what?” she only hoped he wouldn’t tell her that he didn’t love her anymore.

“I am not good for you”

“Nonsense!” he shook his head

“I have told you many times that I cannot give you what a fellow member of your species can give you”

“And every time I told you that I don’t care. I told you that I was glad you’re that unobtrusive because my ex was too pushy. You know I don’t mind that you have your own way to show affection”

“You may not care now. But as time passes you will want more and I am not sure to what extent I can comply with your wishes”

“We’ll find a solution. And if not, we can talk about breaking up then. But what is wrong now? Do-don’t you want me anymore?”

“Of course I do, Carissa, but…”

“Then tell me why! Because I don’t see a reason which means you’re being illogical, Spock” she crossed her arms

“I am not and once I have told you the facts that made me come to the conclusion you will be able to understand”

“I doubt that but go on” she murmured.

“When I was giving Admiral Marcus my mission report, I have made the observation that I was the reason for your capture.”

“If you’re trying to say that it is your fault that Nero was angry with you I can tell you that it wasn’t. It isn’t even your future self’s fault. He did everything he could and no one could have known Nero would want revenge”

“That is a conclusion I have made as well. However, it was my doing that you were on the bridge of the Enterprise, which made it possible for Nero to recognize and entrap you”

“Yeah but let’s not forget that you initially planned to leave me behind because you didn’t want me to get hurt. You only complied because I insisted and was supported by Pike”

“Yet, assigning you to the bridge was not the most logical thing to do, as seen by Starfleet standards. It made more sense from my point of view since I was hoping to be able to have an eye on you during the mission. Now I realized that I should not have done this because I have come to the realization that my decision was not solely based on logic”

“So that’s why? Because I make you show emotions and think illogically? Do you fear anyone could notice you’re… I don’t know affected by something primitive like emotions?”

“No, after all you have made the discovery that I can act as if there is nothing between us”

“Fine, then you’re fed up with pretending to not be with me…”

“Carissa, I would appreciate it if you stopped jumping to such conclusions and would listen to me instead”

“Then tell me” she got up and glared at him.

“The chance of you getting into difficulties because of me is higher than I have thought. Of course, I have never calculated the possibility before but its result was not pleasant”

“In other words, you fear I could get hurt because of you?”

“Not only getting hurt as both of us will have to expect severe consequences if our relationship is discovered”

“Wow, you used the first conditional… you think the chances someone finds out the truth is that high?”

“Yes, after all I had to tell Admiral Marcus about our relationship when he inquired the reason for Nero’s interest in you. Besides, Cadet Kirk knows about us as well and one day, he will let something slip”

“Oh come on, the Admiral won’t do anything about it, I mean... he didn’t tell you to end things, did he?”

“He did not. However, he did remind me to not forget that you are still my cadet in class”

“See. He’s fine with it. And what concerns James Kirk, we can still claim he’s jealous and spreading rumors because of it”

“Carissa, you know of my natural aversion to lying”

“Fine, then I tell them the thing with rumors and you can say that you have not realized he could be jealous but that you could understand a human doing this out of jealousy… That isn’t a lie. And you can claim that nothing inappropriate has happened between the two of us which is the truth as well”

“You are distracting attention from the fact that there are more reasons speaking against our relationship”

“Hate to break it to you but relationships rarely got anything to do with logic. They’re purely emotional. But fine, if that’s what’s bothering you, have it your way” she turned away from him “I don’t understand your decision and I don’t like it. But in contrast to you I accept your decisions” she walked towards the door and cut him off when he tried to speak again “Save your breath. I’ve heard enough. I’m your weak point, I’m what makes you show emotion and you don’t want that” she turned back to him with tears in her eyes “I hope you’re happy now. No, wait, I hope you’re not happy, because you don’t want to feel at all. I hope you’re not feeling anything. That’s what you wanted, right?” without another word she stormed out of the room, slamming the door shut.

Music of the Night (V x Reader)

Hello everyone! Another chapter done and ready. Now that I got some few chapters done, I’ll go back to writing Nocturnal Encounters as well, so stay tuned.

Chapter 5: Revelation

“Bravi! Bravi! Bravissimi!”

A standing ovation was right before you. Tears started forming in your eyes as you curtsied gratefully to the audience. You had just finished performing Elissa’s aria ‘Think of Me’, and judging by the reaction of all the spectators, your performance was an utter success.

The velvet curtains closed in front of you, allowing you to retire back towards the green room where all your colleagues congratulated you warmly for the amazing job you did on the stage.

As an intermission was announced at the end of the act, the Vicomte stood from his seat at one of the boxes and excused himself from his companions. As Raoul walked out and into the hallway, he contemplated what he had just witnessed happening on stage. The way you moved across the stage in smooth and airy strides, the divine emotion conveyed in your voice as you sang the aria, the authenticity and sheer bliss in your smile and your eyes…

Such a wonderful woman you were, skilled, hardworking… When he first laid eyes on you, he felt a unique and tender sensation flowing inside of him. You had bewitched him, and enthralled him to no extend.

As a smile formed on Raoul’s face, he quickly made his way through the hallway.

“What a wonderful night! I am proud to announce that this production has been an outstanding success!” Firmin entered the crowded green room. The opera had just finished and the all the performers and staff members were now reunited there. “Thank you everyone, for we know that tonight’s show couldn’t have been made possible without each and every single one of you. And now, it’s time for a celebration!”

Every time after a successful premiere, one of Fortuna’s most prestigious venues would close off for the day to host a party for all the staff members of the Opera House. Now everybody was looking forward to a nice hangout with food and drinks after all the effort they put in the production finally paid off.

You were currently sitting at your vanity inside your very own private dressing room, given to you since you were now the new lead soprano and actress for ‘Hannibal’. The heavy makeup had finally been removed and your hairdo was already undone, your locks of hair cascading freely down your back. All the accessories and jewelry had now been discarded and carefully put away, your usual earrings now back on your ears, and a lovely white silk robe now over the red and gold costume dress you had been wearing for the musical.

You sat there thoughtfully as you held the portrait of your father in your hands. You had taken it with you and placed it on the vanity of the dressing room for good luck, so that you could feel his spirit right at your side supporting you.

Placing the picture up to your chest, you gently smiled. “Thank you papa.” And with a soft kiss on the image of your father, you placed the picture once again on the vanity before moving a scented candle next to it, carefully lighting it up.

A knock on the door distracted you from your train of thoughts. Moving to open it, you were greeted by Nico as well as…

“Kyrie?! Nero?!” you squealed as the red haired woman ran towards you and pulled you into a warm tight hug. “Why didn’t you tell me you were here in Fortuna?!”

“Wanted to surprise you.” Nero gently hugged you as soon as Kyrie pulled off and let you breathe again. “Although to be honest, we were the ones surprised when we suddenly saw you as the main character.”

“Indeed. Why didn’t you tell us before?” Kyrie questioned you with curiosity and confusion in her eyes. “You were absolutely divine on stage! And your voice was so beautiful, you completely owned that aria!”

Kyrie’s words made a blush appear on your cheeks, that is until Nero asked a question you definitely didn’t want to answer.

“Where did you learn to sing like that?”

“Umm…” you trailed off, unsure of what to tell them. “I-It’s a very long story actually. Let’s just say a… ‘special’ person for me has been giving me a few lessons.”

“Well, whoever this person is hun-” Nico wrapped an arm around your shoulder “-they definitely taught you well judging by that blessed performance of yours. By the way, you going to the party later?”

“Thank you Nico but I’m still not sure. I’m feeling a little tired, that’s all.”

“In that case you should rest, but if you change your mind you can call us anytime and we’ll take you there.” You continued chatting, catching up with every detail that’s happened in your lives. Kyrie has been doing excellently since ‘Wicked!’ turned out to be a huge success in Broadway, and you promised you would save enough money to go see her perform live. You also mentioned the quite eventful times when famous soprano Carlotta Giudicelli used to work at the Opera House, dealing with her meltdowns were a serious handful for everyone and especially for Madame Trish.

After some time, your friends decided to leave so they could get ready for the party, hugging you goodbye and wishing for you to rest enough so that you could join them later. You were about to change out of your costume when another knock sounded on your door.

“Talk about receiving so many visitors in my dressing room.” You thought as you quickly put on your robe and made your way to open the door. Outside was no other than the Vicomte himself, holding a bouquet of luscious red roses.

“Vicomte de Chagny! What do I owe the honor of your visit?”

“There’s no need to keep the formalities dear, you may call me Raoul if you like.” He offered you a warm and charming smile. “May I come in?”

“Oh sure, please do.” You stepped aside to let him enter.

“I came her to congratulate you personally for the outstanding performance tonight, a gifted voice like yours deserves all the praise this world have to offer.” Raoul handed you the bouquet, which you hesitantly accepted since it was a present you didn’t expect at all from the Vicomte.

“I would also like to request, if it’s not too bold for me to ask, if you wanted to assist to our party as my date for the night.”

Your eyes widened in surprise at his request. “Oh… please excuse me Vi- I mean, Raoul, but I’m afraid I… I do not have a proper dress for the occasion.” You weren’t sure to accept Raoul’s invitation, he was the Opera’s patron after all.

“Oh that’s no problem at all, I’m sure we can find an appropriate dress for you in no time. There are a few local designers I know personally who can gladly lend you a gown. ” Now you didn’t know what to say, your eyes glanced around the room, still unsure wether to go with the Vicomte or not.

You took a seat at the vanity. “I’m deeply sorry Raoul, but to be honest I’m feeling a little exhausted after everything that has transpired.” Pausing for a few seconds, the next words came out your mouth without you realizing. “Besides, i don’t think he would agree…”

Raoul raised an eyebrow in confusion “He wouldn’t agree? Your father or… a boyfriend perhaps?”

You mentally scolded yourself. “Oh! Um no… my voice teacher actually. He is a very strict professor and I’m not sure he would like me going.” It was technically true, the phantom took discipline very seriously just like Trish with every rehearsal. He expected you to be always on time and focus on your lessons, no late partying and such shenanigans since he considered them mere earthly matters that would only get in the way of your career.

Still, Raoul kept insisting, always keeping a charming smile and kind eyes. “Please (Y/N), everyone is waiting for our main star to join us to celebrate the premiere’s success. Maybe your professor wants you to relax and have some fun as a reward for all your efforts this season, I’m sure he’ll understand.”

He had a point. Besides, you could still leave the party at a reasonable hour too and still arrive at your lessons on time.

You nodded your answer. “Alright then, I gladly accept your invitation Raoul. I’m just gonna need some time to change and I’ll see you later.”

He flashed a bright grin before taking your hand in his, kissing the knuckles gently. “I shall leave you then, I’m going to wrap up some business affairs with Firmin and Andre and then I’ll come back to you.” He walked to the door, pausing right before stepping out. “See you later, dear (Y/N).”

As door closed, you turned to your father’s portrait. “I’m not sure papa. I mean, he seems to be a nice man, but…” You let out a sigh. Although at first glance it seemed like Raoul was trying to make an advance on you, there was the possibility that maybe you were simply misunderstanding his actions and that he was just being nice to you. Besides, you didn’t consider too appropriate having a close relationship with the very own patron of the Opera, with you choosing to rather keep things as professional as possible.

“Oh papa… what should I do?”

Suddenly, a chill ran down your spine, feeling as if you were no longer alone in the dressing room.

“Such an insolent boy!” the Phantom’s voice resonated through the entire room, a startled gasp leaving your lungs at the anger in his tone. “How dare this young suitor bask in your glory? Requesting you to ditch your singing lessons for a simple night out.”

“No Phantom, do not speak ill of him.” You searched around the room for the source of his voice, but couldn’t find him. “He’s only being nice. My friends want me to go too, everyone has the right to celebrate after a job well done.”

“I hope you haven’t forgotten what I always tell you about earthly matters.” His voice was now calm but chilling, but you didn’t falter. After all, your family has raised you to always stand up and assert yourself in any situation, and if if your decision was to go and celebrate with your friends then the Phantom has no right to decide over you.

“I haven’t Phantom. ‘Detach yourself from all earthly connections, for they only drive you further from the heavenly music’, those are the words you gave me. I did promise you to never forget them, for you have become my guide, my mentor and my guardian after all this time.”

The Phantom hummed thoughtful before speaking once again.

“Flattering, my child. I am glad to have proven myself worthy of your trust, a precious treasure I shall keep with me always.” He now spoke in a very soft tone, the deepness of his voice almost enrapturing you. “And to show my gratitude for the trust you have confided me these last years, I shall now reveal myself to you, see why in shadow I hide.”

Reveal himself? Were you about to truly meet the Phantom? He kept his identity a total secret ever since he appeared to you that day inside the darkness of the storeroom, and now he was about to reveal his real identity to you!

So many questions filled your mind. Who is he really? Was he an actual ghost? What was his real name?

“Phantom, where are you now?”

“My lovely nightingale, look at your face in the mirror behind you. I am there inside.”

You turned back. Hanging on the wall in front of you was a full body mirror that was normally used during fitting tests for the costumes and when putting on big and complex gowns for the play. You slowly approached it while staring at your own reflection, wondering what the Phantom meant with him being ‘inside the mirror’.

You were now standing right in front of it, the only reflection on its surface being yours. It was then that strange a silhouette appeared right next to your own reflection, it was barely visible and you tried your best to identify what it was.

As the image became clearer, you almost fell to the ground in fear. The faint image of a tall man had appeared next to your own reflection, he appeared to be wearing an all-black outfit consisting in a tailored suit, a long cape on his back and an elegant wide brim hat that obscured the upper half of his face.

There was no doubt about it. It was him.

“Phantom… Is that really you?”

“Yes, my child. I am your angel of music, the one watching over you all this time.” A clicking sound rang in your ears, and right before you, the mirror began sliding to the side, revealing what appeared to be an old set of stairs that descended deeply into the dark.

And right at the entrance, was the Phantom itself. The exquisite black suit fitted perfectly over his lithe body, the collar sporting a twin pair of intricate silver brooches at the lapels of his shirt joined together by two silver chains and each piece decorated with tiny green jewels. Right over the knot of his black silk tie, another similar brooch was pinned, this one bigger and crowned with a beautiful emerald. Under the brim of his hat, you noticed a white mask covering the left side of his face, making you wonder about a possible reason for the man to obscure his face.

“My angel of music, hide no longer from me.” Soft plump lips parted as the words left his mouth, his voice deep, full of mirth and power.

He raised a hand dressed in a black glove, offering it to you.

“Come to me, my angel of music.”

Something inside you started pulling you towards him, this man that towered over you and held such power and magnificence in his presence. It was like your mind somehow disconnected itself from reality, and unconsciously, you were already taking steps towards the Phantom.

“Come to me, my angel of music.”

He repeated. Your eyes darkened and half-lidded, your lips slightly parted as steady puffs of air left your lungs. His elegant and mighty figure towered over you, tall and proud, an oddly familiar cane held firmly on his other hand. Why was it so familiar? Why?

“Come to me, my angel of music.”

Entering the passage inside the mirror, you stood right before him. And with a sway of his cape, the Phantom closed the mirror back to its former place right behind you.

“What a performance I say! I even dare to assure we have made the greatest discovery of the year with Miss (Y/N)!” Andre exclaimed loudly as they all made their way towards the main foyer of the theatre, now that the business side had been sorted, the only thing left to do was to celebrate.

“I completely agree, I can see a bright and successful career ahead of her.” Raoul added to the new owners’ compliments about you. “Now if you excuse me, gentlemen, I shall fetch Miss (Y/N) from her dressing room. I assume she must be ready by now to go to the party.”

“Very well then Vicomte, we’ll see you both there.” Andre bowed before leaving alongside Firmin.

Once outside your dressing room Raoul politely knocked at the door, but to his surprise, no answer came. He knocked again, twice, still not answer.

“(Y/N)? Is everything alright there?” No answer.

Fearing something might have happened to you, he quickly opened the door… only to find the dressing room completely empty.

“(Y/N)?” His eyes searched everywhere, but couldn’t find you. Looking down, a single rose from the bouquet he had gifted you earlier had fallen to the floor and now laid forgotten in the middle of the room.

Paranoia Agent EP#10 - Mellow Maromi: The production staff of "Mellow Maromi", an anime based on the famous character designed by Tsukiko, all have difficulties meeting the deadline. Production coordinator Naoyuki Saruta, frequently the cause of everyone's difficulties, is fighting traffic to deliver the first episode of the show to the broadcasting network. Throughout the episode, he nods off, and when he awakens he frequently sees Lil' Slugger pursuing him, only to disappear. His dreams recount the production of the series, and the gradual murder of the entire production crew. Eventually, Lil' Slugger appears in the car, and Saruta's beaten corpse is found in front of the TV network's building. As the network grabs the tape from his hand and rushes it in to air, Maromi is heard saying 'take a rest' over and over again.

My Hero Academia Pro Hero Arc Season 4 EP#88 (25) Finale - His Start: Even though he's the new Number One hero, Endeavor fought the talking Nomu as hard as he could. Meanwhile, Hawks uses the feathers on his wings to keep the bystanders out of trouble. The Nomu strikes Endeavor's left side of his face, destroying his eye. Without All Might as the Symbol of Peace, people everywhere are running in panic just like the Kamino incident 3 months ago. But even with that scar on his face, Endeavor pushes himself beyond the limit of his flames and defeats the intelligent Nomu. Despite his injuries, Endeavor survived the blast and standing strong with his fist raised in the air. It reminded how All Might was still standing during the fight with All For One, but it was also a sign of his start as the new Number One hero.

In a post-credits scene, a sleeping Deku has a mysterious vision where he encounters All For One's younger brother, the first user of One For All. Their hands meet and Deku suddenly awakens with his hand glowing and his window broken.

Note: Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Funimation made a disclaimer at the beginning of the episode stating that the English dub voice actors were able to record their lines from the safety of their homes.

Black Clover Arc 10 EP#123 - Nero Reminisces... Part One: As the Black Bulls leave the kingdom to begin investigating the mystery of demons and clearing Asta's name, Secre reflects about her past. Together with Lumiere they created the first magic tools, met Licht and realised they both possessed 4 leaf Grimoires. She watched them become best friends and then family by Licht marrying Tetia, and saw how close he and Licht came to creating an equal society, until the Devil, Zagred came. He manipulated the humans, using the jealousy and greed of the royals and nobles to bring about the massacre. During the massacre Lumiere realised the elves were murdered with his Light Magic, stored in a magic tool he and Secre created and made stronger by the elves magic stones, all to create a 5 leaf Grimoire while Lumiere was forced to kill Licht when he transformed into the giant demon. Secre then managed to seal Zagred before he could claim the 5 leaf Grimoire and saved Lumiere from death by sealing him in a statue, all at the cost of being transformed into an Anti-bird for using forbidden magic. Eventually she found something to hope for when she sensed a power that could one day defeat Zagred, the day Asta and Yuno were left at the orphanage.

Quick Bits:

Aquaman #42 is a tie-in to the “Drowned Earth” event, following on his skewering at the hands of Poseidon in Justice League #11. Navigating his way through a dead realm is kind of a weird way for Dan Abnett to close out his run on the series, but it’s still a satisfying issue. Great art from Lan Medina, Vicente Cifuentes, and Gabe Eltaeb.

Batman #59 continues the “Tyrant Wing” arc with Batman acting a little unhinged on Penguin’s tip that Bane is running Arkham from the shadows, continuing his criminal empire to kill throughout Gotham. It’s interesting to see Batman alienate his allies again in his pursuit for vengeance.

Bettie Page #1 begins a new volume setting up an alien adventure in Britain, building upon the previous series but not requiring it as reading, from David Avallone, Julius Ohta, Ellie Wright, and Taylor Esposito. Bettie Page, paranormal investigator, is still a weird but entertaining remit and this opening issue does a good job of continuing in that vein as Bettie travels to England to investigate the Queen having been abducted by aliens. Ohta’s art also just keeps getting better and better.

Black Badge #4 employs a unique approach to flashbacks, with a solid spot colour in otherwise black and white image from Tyler and Hilary Jenkins. It’s a neat technique that really makes the scenes stand out.

Bloodborne #7 continues to question the realities and relationship of religion and science, even as the city’s fate becomes bleaker and the disease threatens more and more citizens. While I think I preferred the existential terror of the first arc more, this is still highly enjoyable.

Cold Spots #4 delivers a little bit of explanation as to what Grace has been brought to the island to do. I say a little bit, since there’s still a lot left unanswered in this penultimate issue. Gorgeous artwork from Mark Torres. You can almost feel the coldness coming off the pages.

Cover #3 is some amazing storytelling. Somehow Brian Michael Bendis, David Mack, Zu Orzu, and Carlos M. Mangual are layering more and more into the narrative with each subsequent issue in such a brilliant way that you barely notice how many disparate pieces are being presented. It’s like an intricate tapestry being woven before us. This issue even has a special sequence illustrated by Bill Sienkiewicz of a fantasy story I desperately want to read the rest of.

Crimson Lotus #1 begins a new series from John Arcudi, Mindy Lee, Michelle Madsen, and Clem Robins giving an origin story to Yumiko Daimio, one of Lobster Johnson’s enemies and grandmother to the BPRD’s favourite jaguar. It’s good, and an appearance early on from Rasputin just further shows some of the intricacies of the Hellboy universe.

Devil Within #2 keeps the creepy factor up as Samantha and Michelle try to get help for Michelle’s possible possession. Excellent moody atmosphere provided by the art from Maan House and Dee Cunniffe.

Doctor Strange #8 begins “The Price” but it’s really just a continuation of the “Two Doctors” arc, building off the corruption of Strange’s former student. Mark Waid gives us some very interesting developments here regarding who is targeting him, along with Kamma finding out something Stephen wishes she wouldn’t, and the revelation of the location of one of the other gems from Cyttorak that were revealed to exist in X-Men Black.

Evolution #12 ends the second arc with some lies, half-truths, and compelling confessions. The theme of change and mutation that has been evident since the first issue really comes to the fore this issue as some huge changes occur for the cast.

Exorsisters #2 gives more background to how the sisters came about through a deal with infernal powers by their mother. The art from Gisèle Lagacé and Pete Pantazis really is a huge draw.

High Heaven #3 spends some time with Heather as she deals, kind of, with the loss of both David and Ben. Very weird things continue to go on in heaven with the usual great art from Greg Scott and Andy Troy. The Hashtag: Danger back-up remains funny with the lengths that the team goes to in order to save one of their own, only to have her kill herself again. And the prose pieces nicely round out the entire package.

Hot Lunch Special #4 delivers the penultimate chapter to not just one of the best crime stories I’ve read in years, but also just one of the best stories I’ve read in years period. Eliot Rahal, Jorge Fornés, and Taylor Esposito have really got something special here, with intriguing characters, an ever twisting plot, and some incredible visual. The layouts for this issue, breaking down the pacing, are just wonderful.

Immortal Hulk #9 is another staggeringly good issue, with a change for the Absorbing Man as he’s tapped to go up against the Hulk. While I am a little sad he didn’t stay legitimate following his redemption arc in Black Bolt, his development here from Al Ewing is pretty intriguing. Also love the art as the regular team of Joe Bennett, Ruy José, and Paul Mounts trade off pages with guest artist Martin Simmonds. The former illustrating the Hulk and the latter Creel before alternating in the battle between the two.

Infinity 8 #7 begins the third loop “The Gospel According to Emma” from Lewis Trondheim, Fabien Vehlmann, and Olivier Balez. This reboot of the timeline starts off incredibly wrong as the Marshal approached to assist this time turns on the crew and effectively strands them in this timeline. There’s some interesting bits of grave robbers stealing treasure and overtones of the Marshal’s religion.

Infinity Wars: Ghost Panther #1 begins the final of these two-issue “Infinity Warps” mash-ups. Like the rest, it is incredibly well done. Jed MacKay, Jefte Palo, Jim Campbell, and Joe Sabino craft a tale merging Ghost Rider and Black Panther, seamlessly blending the two into something magical. The art from Palo and Campbell may well be the best of any of these minis and the art on all of them has been very impressive. Love the design for Zarathos.

Judge Dredd: Toxic #2 has the violence and toxicity spillover as the explosion at one of the waste facilities causes increased fear and tension amongst the scrubbers hired to keep Mega-City One functioning. Paul Jenkins is crafting a tale full of the problems that come with xenophobia and the art from Marco Castiello, Vincenzo Acunzo, and Jason Millet just makes it visceral.

Justice League #12 has some really nice art from Frazer Irving for this penultimate chapter of the “Drowned Earth” event. Also, a very interesting revelation from Poseidon when it comes to the invading sea gods.

Justice League Dark #5 kicks off a new arc dealing with the ramifications of the first one, “The Witching Hour” crossover, and previous unrevealed tales of what happened with Detective Chimp after inheriting the Oblivion Bar. James Tynion IV gives some nice nods to the original Shadowpact series aided by beautiful art from Daniel Sampere, Juan Albarran, and Adriano Lucas.

The Last Space Race #2 introduces us to another member of the team, giving us a bit of his backstory, and largely making us want to drop him into a deep dark hole and forget that he’s there. Peter Calloway does a wonderful job of making Roger Freeman thoroughly unlikable, it’s kind of astonishing.

Lightstep #1 is a very different kind of sci-fi tale, mixing almost the feel of the decadence of Rome under Nero or Caligula and the high concept science fiction of a society that measures the class of its citizens by genetic similarity to their progenitor, and thereby assigns how “fast” they live. As I say, different from Miloš Slavković, Mirko Topalski, and Andrej Bunjac. Slavković’s art reminds me a bit Pasqual Ferry mixed with John Watkiss. The story itself somewhat reminds me of Watkiss’ work on John Jakes’ Mulkon Empire. On top of that, it’s part of a broader video game/media franchise from Eipix Entertainment, of which this looks like only the first volley (a novel and video game are forthcoming).

The Lollipop Kids #2 continues to be a fantastic and fabulous comic from Adam & Aidan Glass, Diego Yapur, DC Alonso, and Sal Cipriano. The art alone from Yapur and Alonso would be worth the price of admission, but the characters, setting, and overall plot just elevate this beyond a typical kids fantasy type deal.

Low Road West #3 gets significantly stranger and much more surreal as reality seems to be growing thinner. We’re still not any closer to really understanding what’s truly going on, but it doesn’t really matter. Phillip Kennedy Johnson, Flaviano, Miquel Muerto, and Jim Campbell are telling one hell of a compelling story.

Mae #10 has Mae deal with some stuff in our world before stocking up and returning back to Cimrterén to resume her search for her father. Gorgeous artwork as always from Gene Ha and Wes Hartman.

Marvel Knights #2 sees Matthew Rosenberg and Nico Henrichon join Donny Cates for this chapter, giving a bit of back story on how Banner roped in Castle into searching out the various heroes and leads to a confrontation with Elektra. Still no closer to understanding what happened here, but it does get weirder with a hallucinatory Karen Page. Henrichon’s art is just perfect for telling this story.

Middlewest #1 is a magical debut of this new series from Skottie Young, Jorge Corona, Jean-Francois Beaulieu, and Nate Piekos. It’s a fantasy grounded in the reality of growing up hard in Middle America, with Abel dealing with an abusive father, while just trying to be a kid. But there’s a talking fox and devastating sentient storms. Rather inventive stuff all around. I’m also getting the impression that Jorge Corona should really be a household name. Between No. 1 with a Bullet, Old Man Jack, and now this, he’s been killing it recently.

Night Moves #1 is a pretty great debut from VJ Boyd, Jordan Boyd, Clay McCormack, Mike Spicer, and Shawn DePasquale. It’s a gritty crime drama with occult overtones, but most of the weirdness is just simmering under the surface so far as the protagonists work to find out what kind of mess they’re in. McCormack and Spicer’s art really capture the feel of the seediness of the story well.

Optimus Prime #25 brings it all to a close, with a flashback through Optimus’ life and little vignettes of the various Transformers from John Barber, Kei Zama, Josh Burcham, and Tom B. Long. I’m really going to miss this world.

Pearl #4 is probably the most stereotypical Bendis issue to date, but the dialogue doesn’t tip over into the ridiculous territory. Most of this issue is a conversation between Pearl and tattoo boy, but at least it’s interesting conversation and not random pop culture references repeated as questions.

Pestilence: A Story of Satan #5 gives a bittersweet end to this story, filled with loss and sacrifice. It’s kind of fitting considering how bleak both this and the first series have been. Wonderful art from Oleg Okunev, Guy Major, Michael Garland, and Marko Lesko.

The Punisher #4 may well be one of the bloodiest, most violent mainline 616 Marvel Universe Punisher issues yet as Jigsaw and an assortment of Hydra goons attempt to kidnap Frank from prison. Matthew Rosenberg and Szymon Kudranski are continuing to keep this book moving at a breakneck pace, like an action movie that barely takes any moments to breathe.

Shuri #2 continues the search for Black Panther, while back on Earth the women of Wakanda form a council to figure out how to maintain and administer the nation while he’s missing. Definitely some interesting concepts and character points from Nnedi Okorafor. Phenomenal artwork and layouts from Leonardo Romero and Jordie Bellaire.

Spider-Force #2 is probably one of the bleakest, mean-spirited stories I’ve read in a while. This isn’t a bad thing, but the story’s a bit of a downer as the nature of an irradiated world without hope seems to permeate everything, including characters like Jessica Drew who are normally at least a bit more level-headed. Priest is writing a very dark story, with some complicated characters like Peter’s granddaughter who grew up in the Old Man Logan universe and a Peter Parker who looks like he was abused by Uncle Ben.

Spider-Geddon #4 kind of spoils the need to read Spider-Force #3 out in three weeks, which just kind of adds to the downer feel of that series. This issue turns darker itself with a bevy of betrayals. Christos Gage has kind of stacked the deck against the spiders, I wonder how they’re going to get out of it in the finale.

Stellar #6 concludes the series and it is incredibly messed up. The conflict between Zenith and Stellar is bizarre and perverse, but I don’t really want to go into it more because spoilers would ruin its impact. Joe Keatinge, Bret Blevins, and Rus Wooton have done an amazing job with this series. Highly recommended.

Sukeban Turbo #1 is another series originally published by Glénat Editions in France, translated into English for North American markets. It’s a mix of teenage rebellion, crime, and following a boy band from Sylvain Runberg, Victor Santos, and Shawn Lee. The art from Santos is worth it on its own, very impressive layouts and storytelling.

Summit #10 kicks off the third arc for the series and like most of the Catalyst Prime series recently it undergoes a bit of a change in status quo. Val finds out that she hasn’t been hallucinating, but hearing the voice of another of her team that was essentially vaporized during the event, before having her life turned upside down as the government starts hunting her. Amy Chu continues writing the series, while she’s joined by Marika Cresta fully for the art here.

Tony Stark: Iron Man #6 begins “Stark Realities” and the launch of Tony’s eScape virtual reality game. Dan Slott, with a script assist from Jeremy Whitley, does a great job of making it feel chaotic at launch, with some ordinary and extraordinary problems occurring. The pissed off griefer is hilarious.

Web of Venom: Carnage Born #1 is an interesting reinterpretation of Carnage’s origin to fit within the new mythology being crafted in the current Venom series, also building off the recent two-part arc there with the Maker, from Donny Cates, Danilo S. Beyruth, Cris Peter, and Clayton Cowles. This is more very entertaining outgrowth of the Marvel Universe from Cates and gives us a quite possibly deadlier Carnage.

West Coast Avengers #4 concludes the first arc in fairly straightforward fashion as the team deals with BRODOK and the women transformed into giant monsters. Some nice little character moments from Kelly Thompson and great art from Stefano Caselli and Tríona Farrell.

The Whispering Dark #2 continues its existential and moral crisis as the squad commits war crimes as they struggle to survive. There’s something off about how everything is happening, in how Christofer Emgård is writing the narration, but I’m not sure if it’s just the in-story reason of the go-pills. It feels like the squad is already in Hell and being judged.

Here it is, My Top 5 game logos of E3

There were a lot of surprising showings this year it was almost too much to parse. All of the hype-inducing trailers and teasers were full of little Easter eggs meant for gamers to slowly piece together clues as to what game they were watching. But there was always a moment at the end of each clip where the screen faded to black and a bright and shiny logo appeared. Confirming your suspicion that, yes, they are bringing back Battletoads. These are my favorite logos from the conference.

5. Tunic

Tunic is an adorable isometric rogue-like style game, developed by Andrew Shouldice, in which you play as a small warrior fox and fight your way through droves of enemies while solving puzzles and traversing the world’s box-like terrain. Throughout the trailer shown at E3 there were messages written in strange language foreign to the viewers like the writing shown around the logo above. This seems to be in line with the trend in these games where the main character speaks a language that no one knows, further driving home the idea that we have traveled to a mysterious world far away. The game’s art style is beautiful yet simple and to me everything about this logo really embodies that.

4. Tetris Effect

This one was a surprise to me. Not that there is a new Tetris game coming out but more of the overall beauty of it. Tetris is a game we all know, and a game I’m sure we’ve all played or experienced. The Tetris Effect, as stated in the actual E3 trailer, is a reference to the psychological phenomenon of the same name in which people who played tetris for hours on end found themselves thinking of ways to get objects in their daily lives to fit perfectly together and even reported hallucinating blocks falling down from the sky. In other words the game blended with their reality. Pretty cool concept to base your VR game off of, Sony. The logo pulls from these themes by blending real world imagery into the blocks shown in the trailer...or wait...am I just imagining that? Have I been playing too much Tetris?!?!?!

3. Devil May Cry

I’ve always wanted to wear a duster coat. But I’m short, kinda chubby and it’s like Summer. Devil May Cry has always had a very campy aesthetic that I think is welcomed by the game’s hardcore fans but a lot of gamers in the west seem to be into a more serious tone. That being said I FUCKING LOVE DMC. It’s over the top in all the ways it needs to be and when this was revealed I jumped up on my couch like Tom Cruise in an outdated reference. The game picks up where the 4th installment left off, following the plucky protagonist Nero who apparently has set up his own “demon hunting agency” with an equally plucky Southern woman who claims to have built Nero’s new arm. The wing artwork on Nero’s back could maybe have served as a Roman Numeral V instead of the 5 maybe but hey, I’m not a graphic designer. I do like blue and red as a nod to Nero’s arm in DMC4.

2. Sable

Did you guys watch the PC Gaming show? There were some real gems in that conference. Sable is one of them. Sable looks to be an open world exploration game set in an alien desert landscape. The trailer captures this gorgeous world as a girl, presumably Sable, as she rides her hover-bike looking vehicle through her world. The art style is akin to that of the cell shading of the Borderlands series and reminds me of Matt Fraction and David Aja’s 2012 run of Hawkeye for Marvel Comics randomly. The mysterious symbol centered behind the title coupled with the beautiful desert sunset is giving me some mystical Mad Max vibes and I am digging it. backdrop I am a huge mark for exploration based games so I am very excited about this one.

1. Cyberpunk 2077

Been a long time coming but last month we finally got to see CD Projekt Red’s latest with the trailer for Cyberpunk 2077. I’m not even sure what to say about this game and its logo etc. other than the fact that it looks fucking rad. I have been a huge fan of the Cyberpunk genre even though it never really got the same kind of resurgence that Steampunk has. Films like Akira and Ghost in the Shell are prime examples of Cyberpunk done right and of course Western films like The Fifth Element and Blade Runner have similar influences as well. Cyberpunk 2077 takes place in the same world as the tabletop RPG Cyberpunk 2020 which has a similar logo as shown below.

The absence of any sort of people in the logo for Cyberpunk 2077 is an important choice I feel because the developers have stated that the main character is completely customizable and the game takes place entirely in first person. Unlike the Witcher Series which was a 3rd person RPG following the story of Geralt of Rivia. I look forward to exploring all of Night City and playing as a buff cyborg man with a large laser gun.

Revisiting Chapters Twenty-Eight, Twenty-Nine, and Thirty of Gems Without Measure; A Pirate’s Treasure

As part of the two year celebration of the story being written, I have realized that I must correct an oversight that I should have done months ago…namely doing one of these. Let’s rectify that, shall we?

1) The old “fighting and keeping score” bit is one that is somewhat common. I believe that the first place I came across the concept was in the fifth issue of Superman/Batman by Jeph Loeb and Ed McGinnis, when the Bat-Family and Superman Family break into the White House to confront President Lex Luthor. 2) Thus begins the idea that Peridot wants new limb enhancers or something that can aid her with helping her comrades…I wonder where this will go. 3) A LARGE majority of this chapter is taken wholesale from canon. When Oda wrote the various exposition bits, they were broken up with Franky’s flashback. As I can get somewhat away with merely describing the flashback, it just leaves a lot of exposition, which does benefit the audience who has never read One Piece before. 4) The moment where Robin rejects Peridot is a monumental moment is this part of the story. While Steven and Luffy are undoubtedly the main characters of the story as a whole, Peridot is the main focus of this part of the story. We have watched her transition from the selfish, pompous, Homeworld-indoctrinated Gem to a character who is finding her own sense of identity for the first time. Beyond Steven (who has given his trust to her from the beginning), Robin has formed an unlikely friendship with her. It is what makes the ironic echo of “Logic has no place on the Grand Line” so hard to hear…or read, I suppose. The question is how would she respond: accept it as reality, be betrayed by it, or fight to get Robin back… 5) Pearl naming every attack that she has after herself is comedy gold and completely in-line with her character. 6) Of course, Peridot’s faith in Robin is unwavering. Between her fight against Ratchet and saving Iceburg, Peridot is solidifying herself as being a valuable member of the crew. 7) Peridot’s claim of finishing twelve impossible tasks before the sun rises is inspired from a quote in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. 8) Robin feeling like she is being watched is supposed to be foreshadowing about Sanji watching over her.

9) The song Steven and the Marines are singing is reworked from “When A Felon’s Not Engaged In His Employment” from The Pirates of Penzance. It is not the first time that I have used music from this play nor will it be the last. 10) We know for a fact that, since he outfitted Steven with Seastone cuffs, Nero does not have Devil Fruit powers, but does Apollo?

11) So at this point, we know that both Apollo and Eirney Heca are members of CP9. As such, I can briefly explain just why they exist. They are around to bolster up CP9’s forces and are based off of Oda’s original conception of CP9, with Eirney being based on the original character design for Kalifa (the one that looks like a witch crossed with the Other Mother from Coraline) and Apollo being based on the original idea for what eventually became Kumadori, who was an ape-like human as opposed to an ape mink.

12) Mnemosurgery is taken from Transformers: More Than Meets The Eye by James Roberts. I’ll leave it to you to go on TFwiki to see just what that means before I give anything away…

13) Eirney has brought back the often used gag of Steven’s etiquette being brought up. This time, however, Eirney actually claims that Steven has nice etiquette, which makes the gag subverted.

14) Nero did not really have any personality in the original manga, so I’ve given him his own musical motif in addition to his overconfidence in himself.

15) Steven’s song is based on the “Lapis Lazuli” song.

16) Captain T-Bone is a great Marine presence that I hope gets focused on again. He truly cares about his men to an exaggerated degree, which is fascinating. As such, his odd request to ask Steven to sing is not necessarily out of the ordinary… 17) We also learn that Eirney Heca is a legacy member of CP9…like Kalifa.

18) And now we have come to the biggest plot twist in this story after the inclusion of Uncle Grandpa: the glorious return of the Baroque Works Trio! For the life of me, I didn’t know just when or how I’d get these guys back into the main story for the longest time. I knew what they were doing on Backslide Island, but the question was mainly when would I bring them back. Initially, the suggestion that was thrown around was that they’d return with Franky after he spent their money, but that seemed like it was too sudden. This clicked together literally as I was writing the previous chapter and it all felt so organic that I couldn’t be more pleased. It helps that @cyanideoreo immortalized this moment in a drawing, which is like my favorite thing.

19) I pitched this section of the story as the alternative to the Miss Goldenweek cover story, which obviously couldn’t happen considering the status of the Baroque Works Trio and the MIA status of all of the Baroque Works characters that are not shipped to Impel Down. As such, it got boiled down to a few key events: the Trio ending up on the same island that Hina was on, Hina capturing Miss Valentine, and the other two saving her. My only regret is not including them eating Ice Cream cones, but it didn’t really fit the timeframe. I’ll give them some ice cream later on. 20) In addition to the above information, this flashback literally starts at the same point in canon when the original cover story began being published! 21) We learn that Genevieve does not like to drink, which makes sense given what we know. However, I did have to make a slight adjustment to the ending of “The Would-Be King” to make it clear that she was not drinking any alcohol. 22) O hai, new character! Florido Zuke is named, as with every new place and person introduced in this chapter, by two members of the Crewniverse: Hilary Florido and Lauren Zuke. Her personality was created by jmr46718 and ran by F*ckthesystem125. The rationale was that, as per Oda’s description in the SBS, Mr. 6’s partner was Miss Mother’s Day and it would be amusing to have a character looking like a child but is actually an adult. Think of Mary Dahl from Batman the Animated Series, but with an appearance similar to Janine Melnitz from Ghostbusters. I’d give her a voice similar to that of Jennifer Darling, who voiced Ayeka in Tenchi Muyo. 23) The Surasshu Restruant is named after Steven Velema aka the Surasshu half of Avi and Surasshu, the musical duo behind Steven Universe’s soundtrack. 24) Sherry was Petrea’s drink of choice all the way back in “The Rifting Stone.” There are several variations of sherry out there, but as an English teacher, I’d be remiss not to point out that one such variety is amontillado, the subject of my go-to Edgar Allan Poe story “The Cask Of Amontillado.” 25) I’m sure Treasure Tree Adam wood is not important at all…nope…

26) Mad Treasure is an anime-only character created for the Heart of Gold One Piece special, which was a tie-in to Film Gold. When he was suggested to be the guy for this part over a year ago, I had not seen Heart of Gold but thankfully, it is dubbed into English and is pretty great. 27) The Sugar Tavern is named after Rebecca Sugar, the creator of Steven Universe, and the Moilesee Farmer’s Market is named after Raven Moilesee, who actually liked my Tumblr post of that Peridot Christmas Cookie I made last year. 28) On one hand, the Baroque Works Trio being on an island that JUST HAPPENS to have an auction from Crocodile going on does seem contrived…but on the other hand, this is the world of One Piece where contrived connections happen all the time. 29) We now have the first inklings of Genevieve’s backstory! The book Genevieve is referring to is implied to come from the Oharan library, tying it into Robin’s backstory. We also get a glimpse at just how Mr. 3 and Miss Goldenweek met, although technically one would assume that Mr. 3 should not know her real name as per the rules of Baroque Works…but that doesn’t matter. 30) Deciding on whether to give Genevieve a Devil Fruit was one I had fought against for months until I was made aware of Psycho P’s Color-Color Fruit, which just seemed like a waste of an idea. Using that thought process as our young painter’s motivation, I now had a good reason why she would decide to eat it. 31) The person Damian and Petrea are partying with is, of course, Franky. 32) We finally get a simple explanation on why Damian has not been using his gun: he left it back at Beach City. I mean, think about it: why would he grab the gun just for a simple Davy Back Fight where that sort of weaponry would probably be outlawed, especially since his own body can be used as a weapon? 33) Lamar Levin is, of course, based on Lamar Abrams, the only member of he Crewniverse to have a hand in every major Onion episode (outside of Avi and Surasshu, I suppose) with former writer Ben Levin’s last name. 34) Mohs Island is named after the Mohs’ scale of mineral hardness…pay it no mind. 35) Originally it was suggested that Mad Treasure wanted the Golden Crown for Gild Teroso, the antagonist of One Piece Film Gold, but I figured it worked better as an adventure for a man like Mad Treasure than making him an errand boy.

36) Naomi Drunk and Psycho P are both from Heart of Gold as well…seriously, what odd names. 37) Phil’s boasting is taken from The Dark Knight Returns. 38) I’m sure the amount of money that Petrea haggled the Golden Crown for will go over just fine with Nami. 39) I’m not going to lie, I’d kill to have a cover story where Hina brings Jango and Fullbody to a karaoke bar. 40) The Quartey Auction House is named for Ian Jones-Quartey, a major presence on early Steven Universe and the creator of O.K. KO.

41) Damian’s cork-gun is a nod to the 4kids dub where the guns were either Super Soakers, cork-guns, pointing fingers, or whatever the hell that hilarious hammer gun that Helmeppo used was.

42) Takafumi Liu (names for Takafumi Hori Of Studio Trigger and regular storyboard artist and musician Jeff Liu) description is taken word for word from the chapter in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory where Willy Wonka is first introduced. That is our first hint that he is a literal candy-man…but I highly doubt anyone picked up on that unless they read the “Shout Out” page on the story’s TVTrope page, which I have been updating. Along those same lines, the bit about “rhyme a riddle or two” is from the song “Strike That, Reverse It” from the 2013 Charlie and the Chocolate Factory musical. 43) Gasparde and the Candy-Candy Fruit are from One Piece Movie 4. While it was ambiguous about what happened to him at the end of the movie, I made it clear that he survived Luffy’s attack…before dying anyway. Again, contrived coincidences, but I digress… 44) “Victory Is In The Preparation” is Batman’s motto throughout the first third of Grant Morrison’s Batman run. 45) The buscarinon orange is named for Jackie Buscarino, a producer on Steven Universe and the voice actress for Vidalia. 46) I’m sure this Minister of Candy fellow is an upstanding individual. I wonder if we will ever meet him. 47) And so we get to the big moment: Genevieve eating a Devil Fruit. Now, one thing that I do that you might have picked up on is that occasionally when I write, I write from a third-person limited perspective focusing on one character’s thoughts. This is best viewed in “The Contrivance Factor” with Peridot’s scene and Onion’s scene. I used this with Greg when he got his Devil Fruit, true, but this gave me the ability to write Genevieve’s perception of color increasing and magnifying in ways that Greg couldn’t comprehend at the time in regards to music. It really made sense to look at it in this manner, as color has several different meanings than the singular attacks that Oda developed (which makes sense in a Shonen manga for attacks, but I felt could be expanded upon).

48) As nearly everybody picked up upon, Genevieve’s newest attack is a reference to the song “I’m the Music Meister” from Batman: The Brave and the Bold’s “Mayhem of the Music Meister.” If you have not watched that episode, do it. It’s an amazing musical. 49) Cadets Howard and Morris are named for writer and character designer Colin Howard and story board artist and supervisor Kat Morris. 50) Genevieve and Nami are both firmly on Team Conniverse. 51) Originally, I had Sanji’s section right after the opening, which made the “praying for a miracle” line transition much nicer as well as the joke that Sanji wrote a modest note for Nami. 52) There’s really not much to say about the Aqua Laguna landfall sequence. It gives the Gems purpose without feeling shoehorned in and builds the tension up for the end of the chapter. The most important piece is that Peridot is at the scrap yard getting a giant pile of scrap for future use. 53) Mr. 2 DID asked to be sent to Impel Down back in “The Fake King Of Alabasta.” 54) I am trying rather hard to drop subtle hints about Sanji’s past in his section without giving much away. I think that if you were not aware of it, it would not give anything away. 55) Peridot’s log date was chosen to show just WHEN she would have theoretically been taken from Earth with the extra numerical place being representative of time spent in another dimension.

56) “Nakama” has been a term I have been using since “The Unexpected Phone Call” as the way that the Straw Hats refer to each other. For those not in the know, “nakama” was used exclusively by Kaizoku Fansubs for the friendship the Straw Hats had for each other, with it coming to a head in Luffy’s Arlong Park declaration of friendship to Nami. They claimed the word couldn’t be translated into proper English, but “friends” and “crew mates” does the job just fine. As such, only older fans of One Piece really know or look fondly back at their persistence in translation. I decided to use it in the story in a very similar way: only pirates from the time of Roger used the term, meaning the two others who would use it are Whitebeard and Shiki.

58) I am totally channeling this famous line from Batman: The Animated Series for Sogeking’s Introduction: “I am vengeance! I am the night! I…AM…BATMAN!”

59) I know I primarily use the translated names for the majority of this story, but Sogeking is just so natural to me that I had to go with it.

Wrote a thing. Basically a more structured version of how Shiro would fit into 5.

“OK, so I know you and I hate talking about my daddy and his research...but I found something real interesting in his papers last night.” Nico waved the papers at the hunter, who tried to bat them away.

“I have no interest in his work - unless it’s to kill it.”

“Come with me to his lab and you’ll probably get to swing at something.” She slammed the papers in front of him and jabbed them with a finger. “I can’t go down there without you - you know that!”

Nero sighed in annoyance. “Nico, we’ve been down there already.”

“I know, I know - but there’s another super secret lab within the lab. L-Look, right here.”

“You’re getting over excited,” he pointed out and looked at the scrawl she was poking at. “The game room? That stupid room with the weird die? What about it?”

“You - and Dante - followed the game path to the lab, right?” Nico watched him nod. “W-Well, opposite that is a secret door and another lab, the game was designed to distract or kill intruders - to keep them from the other lab.”

Nero relented and scanned the page she had kept poking at. “This doesn’t really tell us what’s in it, whatever he had there could already be gone.”

“No harm in looking, right? Please?”

“OK, OK, I’ll take you,” he relented with a sigh.

The trip down to the old lab surprisingly didn’t take them long, Nero had cleared most of the straying demons out and what was left didn’t dare to challenge the young hunter. They made their way to the castle and through the familiar lab he’d shown Nico before, and once they were at the game room she practically skipped over to the opposite wall to inspect it.

“Here!” She slapped the wall. “There’s a door behind here, hit it real hard, yeah?”

Nero tilted his head curiously. If the door and the wall hiding it were still intact, did that mean one of Agnus’ crazy experiments was still alive in there? Could it have found another way out? “Come stand behind me, just in case.”

He waited until Nico was behind him before slamming the spectral of his demonic arm into the wall; it surprisingly caved with ease with the door, and he had to quickly grasp Nico’s arm to stop her charging ahead. Nero nudged her back behind him and drew Blue Rose, watching the dust settle and cautiously stepped into the new opening. Any other time, he would rush in, but he had the other woman to protect and he’d mostly learnt from past mistakes about rushing in. The narrow hallway opened to a small lab that was mostly taken up by a huge cylinder in the middle, filled with a light green liquid and figure inside.

“What the-?” He lowered his weapon, Nico peered around him briefly before rushing forward to inspect it closer.

A gasp of awe as the woman pressed her hand to the cold glass. “She looks just like you - did you have a sister?”

“No - I don’t -” A shy turn away. The figure with his features - although more feminine - was very naked. “I don’t recall having a sister.”

Nico let out a thoughtful hum as she circled the tube, eyes scanning every inch of the machine, following wires and eventually wandering over to a small desk in the corner. “Huh…”

“Huh?” Nero went over, anything to keep himself from glancing at the tube. “What’s ‘huh’?”

Nico picked up the notebook she’d been scanning, leather bound with crumpled pages. “She’s you.”

“We’ve established she looks like me.”

“No dummy, she is actually you!” she turned, briefly startled by him suddenly being so close. “Daddy managed to get a sample of your DNA and made her; she’s only female because he took a chance at changing the chromosomes as part of the experiment...a chance at another daughter…”

Nero’s eyes softened at Nico’s heartbreak in her own eyes. “Nico…”

She shook her head, eyes suddenly filled with determination. “She’s coming with us!”

“She is?” Nero watched her approach the tube again, trying to find a way to open it.

“Yup! She’s coming home with us - can’t leave our little sister here!” She put her fists on her hips. “You’re gonna have to break it.”

“W-Wait, you’re ok with her? This isn’t weird for you?”

“She’s not my clone,” she deadpanned. “Are you really going to feel any better just leaving her here? Even if she’s out of sight, will she really be out of mind?”

Nero hates it when she’s right - and she is, leaving that version of him locked away in the lab didn’t mean he would forget about her, if he was truthful with himself...he’d probably come back for her. “Fine!” he huffed, placing Red Queen against the wall as he shrugged out of his jacket and tossed it to Nico. “Hold this and stand back.”

The tube is more fragile than it looked. Nero swung a little too hard and had to quickly drop his sword to catch the girl as the water rushed over him.

“Smooth,” Nico teased, draping the jacket over the girl and checking her pulse. “She’s alive.”

“Great.” Nero shook the water from his hair. “Let’s get her home.”

Kyrie’s eyes widened only briefly at the newcomer before she jumped into action, ushering Nero to place her in the spare room - apologising to Nico for now kicking her out of it - and rummaging through her old clothes for anything that might fit later; Nero tried to calm her down while Nico watched the whole thing with a beer in hand and smoke ready to be lit.

“I’ll sit with her,” Kyrie offered softly.

Nero shook his head. “We don’t know how she’ll react when she wakes, I’ll watch her.”

“He’s right,” Nico assured. “She’s got that freaky arm of his, too, wouldn’t want you getting hurt.”

Nero would be offended if he didn’t know she was joking, but still snorted. “Go, Nico will fill you in,” he urged and watched them leave before taking a seat at the side of his clone’s bed.

It was another hour before she woke. Nero’s Bringer glowed softly with hers as she stirred and blue eyes opened slowly while turning her head to look at him, as though she was aware that he was there with her.

“Hey.” He smiled softly. “You feeling ok? Can you talk?”

“Yeah…” her voice is horse and he offers her a glass of water, watching her carefully sit up and look around before she drinks, bed sheet pressed to herself to keep her modesty.

“I’m Nero.” She opens her mouth to reply, but stops short. “Can’t remember your name, huh? That’s ok,” he assures and watches her eyes fall to his Bringer and then to her own. “It’s not as scary as it looks, I promise.” He grabs hers with his and they glow softly again. “You can trust me, ok?”

“OK, I will.”

“Great.” He stands. “I’ll send Kyrie in with some clothes and we’ll eat.” He waited at the dining table with Nico, watching Kyrie dip in and out of the spare room before they both emerged; his brow rose at the long shirt and baggy jeans his clone was now wearing, and Kyrie’s sheepish smile.

“Seems she only fits in your clothes.”

Nico grinned. “Little sister looks good either way - but what about her hair?”

Now that he’s really looking at her, he sees her hair flowing down to the back of her knees; she scratches her nose shyly. “I’m your sister?” she asks Nico.

“More his sister than mine - I guess you’re my step sister!” She leaned against Nero. “Does that make you my little bro, too?”

Nero shoved her playfully. “Don’t sweat the small stuff, just sit down and relax.”

“She needs a name, we can’t keep calling her ‘little sister’.”

“I like Shiro,” Kyrie offered with smile. “Don’t you?”

Nero nodded and looked to his clone. “Do you?”

She smiled. “I do. Thank you.”

Nico saw the majority of the bonding process; the way Nero was as tentative with Shiro as he was with Kyrie, the way he treated her with kid gloves despite her proving over and over that she was just as capable as he was; she saw the mannerisms they shared, how they were both quick to anger, how they could move together in battle without so much as a glance at each other. Nero treated her as his genuine sister, a real family that he had longed for; from the outside, it looked strange - a little too close for normal siblings - but from the inside he was just a brother that adored and protected his sister. When Nero decided to cut his hair shorter Shiro did the same, mirroring his old look with the softness of her features; he gifted her his old jacket when Kyrie made him a new one and passed down the clothes he didn’t wear anymore, and she didn’t mind.

They were one big happy family.

Until that day…

Shiro follow Nico inside when Kyrie called them for dinner, but something made her pause halfway into her seat - an energy that she couldn’t quite put her finger on; Kyrie called for Nero again and Shiro rushed back into the garage in time to see her brother tossed into the shelves and a cloaked figure holding the Devil Bringer.

“Nero!” Shiro tried to roll him over, but he refused - fixated on the figure until it disappeared through a portal and he passed out. “Nico, give me a hand here!!” Shiro made a tourniquet with her belt for his arm and the pair hoisted him into the van to the hospital. Shiro stayed with him the majority of the time, only leaving for the nurse to change the bandages or for quick jobs; it was on the return from a job that she found his bed empty and a man with black hair smirking back at her before jumping out the window.

“Shit,” she cursed, following him out and kicking the walking stick out from under him with a swipe of her foot. “What the fuck do you think you’re doing?!”

“Easy.” Nero grabbed her shoulder. “He knows where that bastard is - the one that…I gotta go.”

“Like hell you do! You’re not even fully healed - you only woke up this morning!”

“I’ll be there assisting him,” the newcomer assured, getting back to his feet.

“Leading him into a trap!” Shiro spat. “I’m going too, since you’re going to be so bullheaded about this.”

“Sis…”

“Do you think I can look Kyrie in the eye if I let you go alone? I’m going. No arguments.”

The stranger, ‘V’, led them to Redgrave, a city with a giant tree and a lot of demons. Nero held himself just fine as they made their way up, but he felt slightly better with Shiro by his side; she voiced her suspicions of V, of how he knew too much and yet said so little - coming and going as he pleased, but Nero brushed them off, only thinking of revenge.

“Dante’s here, too,” Nero murmured from the ledge. “We can’t let him have all the fun.”

Shiro shook her head. “I have a bad feeling about this…”

“It’ll be a piece of cake, c’mon!”

“Ne-...dammit…” She followed after him, surveying the room while Nero rushed in as usual, cocky and sword blazing. Dante seemed out cold, as were two other women in the room.

The pair fell into line together, moving and swinging without tripping over each other or getting in each other’s way, but neither could get a hit on Urizen. A tendril shot towards Nero and Shiro blocked it with her sword, only for the tendril to arch up and behind her, grabbing her by the ankle and whipping her into the air before slamming her down again with enough force to make a small crater.

“Shiro!” She didn’t move. Nero began to panic and things suddenly moved slowly; the tendrils wrapping around him, Dante freeing him, V pulling him out of the room as the doorway collapsed. “I can still fight! I can still get Shiro!”

“Dante will protect her!” V assured. “But, for now, we need to regroup.”

Nero found it difficult to look Nico in the eye and admit he’d lost Shiro. It was a blow to his heart and pride that he’d rushed in so recklessly and risked Shiro as well as himself. Nico yelled for what seemed like hours and then stormed into the garage for a smoke and tinker with something on the desk; Nero gave her some time alone before daring to join her, peering over her shoulder.

“...making something good?”

“Making something GREAT,” she corrected around her fourth cigarette. “If we’re going to get Shiro back then you need something as great as that old arm of yours.”

He let out a brief chuckle. “You going to stick a new arm on me?”

“Yup,” she deadpanned and turned in the chair, grabbing his stump and forcefully moved it around. Nero didn’t complain and figured he deserved the man-handling. “It’s going to hurt like a bitch, but I can do it.”

“I thought I was going to have to pick you out of his...tummy teeth.” Nero tilted his head at V. “You seen Shiro?”

“Not yet, there’s a chance she might still be in the Quliphoth. We need to tear down the roots to get there.”

The van leapt down from above, skidding to a halt. “I know - I know I’m late! Shut it! The roads were all clogged!”

V watched the pair converse after batting the remains of a demon at Nico at her demand, and Griffon settled on his shoulder with a ruffle of his feathers. “You don’t really believe she’s in the Quliphoth, do ya?”

“I don’t. She’s most likely pollen now, but I need to keep him on side.”

“Oh, that’s sneaky, heh heh. Just so you know, when he does find out and wants to kill ya, you’re on ya own.”

“Noted,” V hummed and said his goodbyes before parting from the pair. He had no intention of finding Shiro for them and he was certain she was dead, all that mattered was the Sword of Sparda and finding Dante.

It seemed like a long time before he bumped into Nero again; having defeated the Elder Geryon Knight, V soon ran into more trouble in the form of a flaming demon. It had long legs built for speed, a slim body and one arm was just a whip.

“I guess she isn’t dead,” V mused and sent Shadow out first, letting the feline pierce the body while Griffon shocked it; as they attacked, the red skin glowed and burned hot - suddenly blasting out a wave of fire that wiped the pair out instantly. V stumbled as the whip arm flew at him, only for it to wrap around Nero’s Devil Breaker to block the attack.

“Exceptional timing.”

“You’re welcome.” Nero sliced the whip. The demon screeched and the whip trembled as the end regrew. “Well that’s...gross.”

“Indeed. If you can lure that thing away from Griffon and Shadow’s cores, I can revive them to assist.”

Nero huffed. “Can do, but I won’t need it.” He rushes in, sword swinging, gun blazing and Devil Breaker firing.

V watches carefully while he stands near the cores; the demon is trying to skip around Nero to him - intentionally targeting him - and Shadow has to pierce the body multiple times to get it to stop. It’s then that Nero sees pale skin underneath as the red scales of the demon try to heal over from the attack.

“It’s like with Lady…” he muses. “V, do that again!”

“If you insist.” He gestures and Shadow attacks, her body turning into a blade and cutting through the scales once more; Nero grabs the jagged edges before they can knit back together and pulls hard, revealing Shiro inside and catching her as she collapses. “I guess that’s one part of your mission accomplished.”

“Yeah…” He presses his forehead to hers and gently lifts her into his arms, doing his best to shield her nudity from V as he does. “I better call Nico.”

They sit on a bench as they wait. Nero had covered Shiro with his jacket while V called Nico from a phonebooth, and when he’d joined the other he found Nero cradling her in his lap, chin resting on her head; V sat on the other end of the bench, gently tapping his cane on the ground while Griffon perched on the back of the bench between them.

“She means a lot to you, doesn’t she?” V eventually murmurs. “She’s lucky to have you as a brother.”

“Lucky? She wouldn’t be in this mess if I hadn’t…” Nero took a breath to calm himself. “Shiro is my only blood family. I care a lot for Kyrie and Nico...but Shiro is me, and I need her just as much as I need them.”

“She’s you?” V questions, but the van pulling up keeps him from getting an answer.

Nico rushes out and Nero explains everything while laying Shiro on the spare couch. V sits on the steps of the van and converses briefly with Lady before leaving again, but not before gifting Nico with a piece of demon he collected; he parts ways with Nero once more traversing the underground station with ease until he comes across a larger horde of demons than he expected, all of which seemed to come from a strange portal.

Just as the horde becomes too much, just before V can snap his fingers to summon Nightmare, he hears the familiar roar of an engine; an arch of flames cuts through them, a spectral bringer snatches one of the larger demons and swings it into the others to give V more space. Shiro lands with a crouch in a pair of jeans and a grey shirt, sword over her shoulder as she stands and gun hanging loosely at her side; she’s barefoot, but doesn’t seem to care as she plants one into the chest of an Angelo and kicks it into a train carriage.

“I was looking for Nero, how the hell did I end up with you?” she sneers.

“Hello to you too, toots,” Griffon huffs, and then yelps as Shiro snatches him from V’s shoulder and tosses him at Scissor, following that up with a gunshot to its face. Once the horde is cleared, Shiro drops to her rear to catch her breath.

“Maybe you shouldn’t have rushed to catch up so soon.” V stood near, just in case something tried to ambush them while they were resting.

“And let you lead my brother into another trap? Nu-uh.” She reached out and scratched Shadow under the chin with a talon. “That’s no offence to you, though, beautiful.”

Griffon ruffled his feathers. “Why can’t you be that nice to me?”

“Cats are for petting, birds are for eating.” She shot him a dark look and he edged down the back of V’s vest. “Call me toots again and you get to taste lead.”

“We’re on the same side here,” V assured softly. “I want to defeat Urizen too.”

She stands, brushing the dust off her jeans. “I know, but I can’t help but think there’s something more.”

Nero asked her to stay by V - maybe he thought things would be less dangerous around him and his familiars, maybe he still felt guilty about not being able to protect her three months ago; Shiro didn’t hold it against him, but agreed because she just couldn’t trust V. She had to figure out what he was up to.

“Do you need a break?” she asks, watching him leaning on his cane more than usual. He’s getting weaker with each battle, she can tell, and she wonders if Nero noticed it too.

“Thank you…” V eases himself onto some rubble and gazes past her. “The Sword of Sparda isn’t much further...I can feel it.”

“Then what? What’s the plan once we find it?”

“Take it to Nero, he can defeat Urizen with it…”

A huff. “You don’t sound so sure.”

“He’d prefer it if Dante did it,” Griffon stated from just above them. “But since he’s gone, Nero’s the only one who can do it now.”

“What about me?” she snapped. “Do you think I’m not strong enough? Who has been keeping your ass alive since the underground, hm?”

“That’s not…” V trailed off. “I didn’t mean to offend, but I think Nero would like to keep you from this as much as possible.”

“Nero doesn’t get to decide that.” She turned and stormed off, leaving V to trail behind her.

They found the sword, and Dante nearby moments after. Shiro was amazed that he was still alive all this time, while V uttered something about the sword masking Dante’s presence; she was debating whether she’d have to carry the devil hunter when movement caught her eye. Griffon yelled for V to stop, Shiro lunged to grab him and the sword missed Dante’s face by a hair; the older hunter tilted his head and jumped to his feet, stretching while Shiro snatched the sword back and lifted it threateningly.

“Nero, no need for that,” Dante stated calmly, grabbing her wrist and turning her - surprised to see a young woman looking back at him.

“I’m...I’m Shiro…” She flushes. “Nero’s told me a lot about you…”

Dante stares at her for a long minute before one corner of his lips turns up and he nods. “Yeah, I remember seeing you with him, now. Go easy on V, he’s paying my bills.”

“R-Right…” She watches him stretch again while Griffon flutters around him, and chuckles when the hunter tosses the bird aside; she offers him the sword with a bright smile and he takes it while patting her on the head.

“Stick by V a little while longer for me, ok?”

She’s not sure why she suddenly feels the need to seek his approval or praise - perhaps she was just starstruck from all the stories Nero and Nico had told her - but she nods and lets him tuck a finger under her chin to study her again.

“Shiro’s a pretty name - and I’m sorry I got distracted back then.”

“Back then?” she asks, but he heads off before she can get an answer.

They’ve finally caught up to Dante at the upper echelon of the Quliphoth; Urizen had slipped away from the hunter in the throne room, but the group was determined to keep fighting - Nero especially, arguing with the elder that he has more power, he can fight. He can win.

“I’m done babysitting,” Shiro stated. “I’m going too, V’s on his own if he wants to see this out.”

Nero shook his head. “You should stay here with Nico.”

“Hey, I don’t need babysitting,” the gunsmith spat. “Plus, Lady and Trish are here.”

“You’re not the only one with a score to settle here; I get you want to protect me as your sister but-”

“You’re my clone!” he snapped. “Not my sister!” Nero’s not sure why he said that so suddenly, perhaps he was trying to shock her into staying put - but there was no malice behind his words, no hatred in his eyes. Only guilt once the facts had left his mouth.

Shiro didn’t have the expression he was expecting. Eerily relaxed, if a little hurt by the sudden outburst, but she simply took a breath and nodded. “I know.”

“Y-Y-You knew?” Nico stepped closer to her, torn between giving her space and wanting to hug her tight. “How?”

“The day I woke up, I wondered how I was looking down at myself. I don’t know how, but I have a lot of Nero’s childhood memories.” She gave Nico a sad smile. “Didn’t take long for me to get curious - I went through your stuff. Sorry.”

“No, it’s ok. I’m sorry we kept that from you…”

Blue eyes casually shift to Dante and they share a long look. The hunter knew she was there, hidden away, but had become distracted by Sanctus and forgot to go back for her; he gives her a guilty wince and she just shrugs. Que sera sera.

“Now, I don’t know about you guys, but I’ve got a score to settle; I’ll see you at the finish line!”

It’s a day of family drama.

V is Vergil.

Urizen is also Vergil.

Vergil is Nero’s father.

Shiro can understand Dante’s hesitation to let Nero go further with him, the hunter even gives her a confused look when she tags along instead.

“He’s not my old man,” she states. Biologically, yes he was, but Shiro was Agnus’ creation. His daughter. Shiro knows Dante doesn’t accept her reasoning, but allows her to follow along.

It’s bitter-sweet for her when it comes to the end of the familiars; she’d liked Shadow, tolerated Griffon and admired Nightmare’s powers. Still, she continued on, just behind the famous devil hunter, and did her best to aid him when he fought his brother; she was continuously batted aside just as easily as when he was just Urizen, and it was only when Dante forced her to sit did she accept she wasn’t strong enough.

“Nero’s my son?” Vergil questions during a lull in the battle, eyes glancing at Shiro. “She’s mine, also?”

Shiro brushed him off. “I’m just some mad man’s experiment…”

Dante wasn’t having that. “No matter your origin, you’re Nero’s blood - his sister - that makes you Vergil’s kin too!”

She rose back to her feet. “If you’re saying that because you don’t want me to kill him either, don’t worry. I just want to punch him a lot for making me a slave for three months. I want to punch him for what he did to Nero - you can have the finishing blow.”

“That’s coming sooner than you think!”

The twins lunged at each other once more, only for another demon to get in the middle of them; Shiro knew instantly it was her brother, she stared in awe at his new form and realised she had a long way to go to keep up with the Sparda lineage. This was no longer her fight - or Dante’s - and they watched father and son battle until the Quliphoth shook.

Differences put aside, the twins decided to go into the demon realm and sever the roots; when Nero tried to stop them, they both back handed him. Dante went on ahead, saying a quick goodbye when Shiro rushed to her brother’s side, and Vergil took a moment to study her; a small, approving, smile graced his features and he tossed V’s book to them.

“I’ll be returning for that. Thank you, both of you…”

Nero and Shiro sat on the roof of the van, staring into the distance where the Quliphoth once stood. The sun was setting, but the air was still warm.

“Do you think they’ll come back?” Nero wondered aloud and Shiro nodded.

“Once they’ve settled their differences.”

“Let’s not be like them, yeah? If you’re pissed at me, tell me.”

“I’m not pissed at you. You’re my brother, I love and admire you.”

He looked at her out of the corner of his eye. “Not even a little bit? Not even for before?”

“You didn’t mean it.” She rested her head against his shoulder. “I made my peace with what I really am months ago.” His arm wrapped around her and she stared at the now human limb. “That growing back is still fucking weird though.”

They laugh together and Nico sticks her head out of the window to look at them. “Hey, we got a job before we head back home.”

Peace and quiet ruined. Time to go to work.

There’s plenty more to Massachusetts dining than just restaurants in Boston proper. We’re keeping tabs on developments in the Greater Boston area and beyond, including openings, closures, and more. With a focus on Greater Boston suburbs but occasionally reaching out further around the state, this piece is updated weekly, with the most recent news appearing at the top.

BROOKLINE — Hamilton Restaurant & Bar (1366 Beacon St.) opened for a sneak peek over the weekend in Brookline. The restaurant took over the former Yasu space, and from name to design, it embraces history. With a 150-person capacity, Hamilton is serving up “good, simple, seasonal food, rooted in classic cooking” from chef Nick Davidovich, an alum of West Bridge, Salts, and 80 Thoreau. There’s also beer, wine, and cocktails, along with some televisions for airing sporting events.

MALDEN — Bikeeny Caffe(62 Summer St.) opened earlier this month, serving coffee, Mem tea, cakes, sandwiches, and mini puff pastries (“bikeenies”) in assorted varieties. It’s open seven days a week, starting at 6 a.m. on weekdays and 7 a.m. on weekends.

MELROSE — Tsukiji Bistro (505 Main St.) has closed down. The restaurant specialized in Asian cuisine and had only opened in December, according to Boston Restaurant Talk.

NEWBURYPORT — Manchester-by-the-Sea’s Superfine (25 Union St.) has not one but two new locations on the way: the previously reported, long-in-the-works one in Marblehead at 126 Washington St., now set to open this spring, plus a newly announced Newburyport location at 17 State St., the former CR Moulton’s, that’ll open this summer. The Superfine team is made up of Matthew Gaudet, who was chef and owner of the now-defunct West Bridge in Cambridge; Paul Emmett, an alum of Radius and West Bridge; and Christopher Robins, formerly culinary director for the Aquitaine restaurant group. Under the motto “common food done uncommonly well,” the fine-dining-experienced trio serves a family-friendly, casual menu that centers around pizza and burgers. There are also ribs, “crunchy” chicken, avocado toast, one giant garlic knot, and more (not to mention boozy shakes for the adults).

PEABODY — Tony C’s Sports Bar & Grill(210 Andover St., Northshore Mall)is now open and operating seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 1 a.m., serving a menu of hearty bar fare like burgers, sandwiches, pastas, and more. The nearly 8,000-square-foot restaurant takes its name from former Red Sox player Tony Conigliaro. In addition to dining space inside (with opportunities for watching sports, of course) there is also a patio and a lounge area. The growing local chain also has locations in Somerville, Burlington, and Boston’s Fenway and Seaport neighborhoods.

PEABODY — The Northshore Mall (210 Andover St.) is filling up with food. In addition to the recently opened Bancroft & Co. and the previously announced Tony C’s, which should open later this month, the mall has announced that New Hampshire’s Hop & Grindburger and beer joint and Amigo’s Mexican Kitchen and Tequila Bar will also open, both in fall 2018. And later this month, the ubiquitous Caffè Nero will arrive as well.

QUINCY — Dorchester’s Windy City Pizza (516 Gallivan Blvd., Dorchester) is now open in Quincy as well (195 Newport Ave.), operating until 3 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays (but it’s delivery-only after midnight). The casual spot serves pizza, wings, and other takeout/delivery staples.

REVERE — An update on the uncertain future of Bianchi’s on Revere Beach: It’ll be able to stay open until around Labor Day this year before construction begins on the new development at that site, and there’s a good chance it’ll ultimately be able to reopen inside the new building.

WALTHAM — As the Moody’s Delicatessen (468 Moody St.) empire continues to expand within Waltham and beyond, it’s getting a 30-seat, counter-service taco and barbecue sibling right down the street, El Rincón de Moody’s (456 Moody St.), later this month. It’ll serve beer, wine, and cordial-based cocktails in addition to a menu full of taco combos, pulled pork sandwiches, and agua frescas. Keep an eye on Instagram for updates.

LEXINGTON — Tres Petite Creperie (1707 Massachusetts Ave.) is under new ownership, and now (in addition to crepes) it also has an interesting mix of new menu items: tacos and lasagna.

NATICK — Blue Dalia Mexican Restaurant & Tequila Bar (1245 Worcester St.) opens May 4 within the new Wegmans grocery store in Natick, as previously reported. Culinary director Roberto Santibañez (who is behind Fonda in New York City) and chef de cuisine Geno Bahena oversee the menu of Mexican dishes like tamalitos de elote, enchiladas con mole xico, and more. There are also cocktails (including plenty of margaritas) and other boozy options for those looking to break up grocery shopping with some tequila. Sure, it’s a restaurant in a grocery store, but it’s a really attractive restaurant in a really popular grocery store.

The restaurant will be open seven days a week from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m., with the bar open until 11 p.m. and lunch and brunch coming soon. Here’s the opening menu:

SOUTH BRAINTREE — Pho Vietnam will take over the former Sintra space in South Braintree (906 Washington St.), according to Boston Restaurant Talk. The restaurant hasn’t yet announced an opening timeline.

WINTHROP — A new source for Nepalese food has opened in the area. Bridges Nepali Cuisine (35 Crest Ave.) is up and running, serving rice bowls packed with lentils, vegetables, grilled chicken, and more. There are also samosas, soups, sides, and rice porridge for dessert.

LOWELL — Hell’s Kitchen and Beat Bobby Flay alum Brendan Pelley, formerly behind the Pelekasis pop-up at Wink & Nod and more recently chef de cuisine at Doretta Taverna & Raw Bar, has taken on the role of culinary director for the cafe, grocery store, and theater at Mill No. 5 (250 Jackson St.), an old mill now filled with numerous dining and shopping options. He’s handling concessions for Luna Theatre, adding to the prepared foods section at Red & White Market, and serving up sandwiches, “yummy bowls,” and more at Coffee and Cotton, as Boston Magazine reported. Looking for that spinach pie he served at Pelekasis and Doretta? That’ll be at Coffee and Cotton, too.

LYNN — Hayward’s (125 Lynnfield St.) closes down on April 27. Owner Taso Mavros is reportedly selling the restaurant to Enrico and Jaime Mancini, who plan to open Dock 125 onsite, retaining a few Hayward’s dishes while serving items like burgers, pasta, and steak.

MAYNARD, SUDBURY, AND WALTHAM — WAAF radio personality Greg Hill’s Whole House Group will sell both Flank in Waltham (74 Tower Rd.) and 29 Sudbury (29 Hudston Rd.) to the AB Hospitality Group. Flank has closed and will reopen as a new restaurant following renovations, and 29 Sudbury will remain open. Whole House retains Battle Road Brew House in Maynard (20 Sudbury St.).

STONEHAM — Nobility Hill Tavern (423 Main St.) will take over the former Felicia’s space, serving New American comfort food. Felicia’s closed last fall after more than 50 years in business, as Boston Restaurant Talk reported.

CONCORD — Rapscallion Kitchen & Bar(208 Fitchburg Tpk.) officially opens its doors on April 24. The restaurant is connected to Acton’s Rapscallion Table & Tap and Sturbridge’s Rapscallion Brewery. The restaurant will operate Tuesday through Sunday from 12 p.m. to 11:30 p.m., with the kitchen closing at 9:30 p.m.

FRAMINGHAM — British Beer Company (120 Worcester Rd.) will close down at the end of the month after 12 years in business. “The new owners have some great plans for the property and we wish them well,” a Facebook post from the restaurant reads. Stay tuned for details on the replacement. (As noted below, a Walpole location also closed recently.)

LEXINGTON — Abbott’s Frozen Custard(1853 Mass Ave.) is a Rochester, NY original that’s making its mark on the Boston area. With one location already operating in Needham and another in Brighton Center, Abbott’s now has a Lexington shop as well.

NEWTON — District 118 Kitchen (118 Needham St.) has opened for business, taking over the former Grande Kitchen space. The restaurant is not connected to the similarly named District Kitchen in Pittsfield. It’s open seven days a week, and the menu includes items like seared ahi nachos, smoked salmon flatbread, braised short ribs, and burgers.

NORTH ANDOVER — Howling Wolf Taqueria (550 Turnpike St.) now has a third location — its second “express” fast-casual spot, as opposed to the full-service Salem one — offering counter-service Mexican food in North Andover. The restaurant serves a lineup of tacos, quesadillas, burritos, and more.

PEABODY — Bancroft & Co.(210 Andover St.) is now open at the Northshore Mall. The restaurant is a sibling to the Bancroft, a steakhouse in Burlington, and it’s serving up a mix of New England fare (clam chowder and baked clams) along with items like brick chicken, steak, burgers, and grilled branzino.

QUINCY — Jenny’s House(1247 Hancock St.) in Quincy specializes in Chinese cuisine. The restaurant’s been open since the end of March, and it serves items like sweet and sour pork spare ribs, dan dan noodles, wonton soup, scallion pancakes, and pork belly buns.

Elsewhere in Quincy, Sully’s (28 Chestnut St.) will be closing down in June, per Boston Restaurant Talk. The dive has been around since the early 1930s, and it will reportedly be replaced by a new development complex.

Additionally, FoxRock Properties may open a new restaurant in the former Masonic Temple (1170 Hancock St.) in Quincy. The venture will include a lounge, a dining area, a convention room, and a rear courtyard, according to BRT.

ABINGTON — Great Chow (497 Bedford St.) has closed down after about 10 years in business serving a mix of Chinese and Japanese cuisine. There’s another location in Quincy that remains open.

BROOKLINE — Clover Food Lab (6 Harvard St.) will close down its Brookline location on April 20 after five years in business, according to Patch. It was a takeout-only spot that founder Ayr Muir had tried to rezone to accommodate seating, but to no avail.

NEWTON — Grape Leaf Mediterranean Grille(6 Lincoln St.) opened recently in Newton Highlands. The restaurant serves Greek dishes including gyro, pastitsio, falafel, souvlaki, soups, and salad. It also offers catering and prepared meals ready to heat and eat, featuring roasted chicken, moussaka, spicy tofu, and more.

WALTHAM — Bonefish Grill (99 Third Ave.) has closed down, leaving New England without a location of the Florida-based chain seafood restaurant.

WATERTOWN — Joyful Garden (550 Arsenal St.) is in the midst of relocating from Brighton (1234 Soldiers Field Rd.). The Chinese restaurant previously operated in the lobby of a hotel, serving dishes such as teriyaki chicken, seafood soup, walnut shrimp in a deep-fried taro ring, hot and sour soup, and much more.

WORCESTER — Bacon-centric Hangover Pub and sibling ramen-centric restaurant Broth are both closed for the time being, due to legal circumstances involving a co-owner of the restaurant. Christopher Slavinskas was charged with lying to the Drug Enforcement Administration earlier this year, per multiple reports. He pleaded guilty and will be sentenced June 29. Details about the reopening of the restaurants are not yet available.

MARBLEHEAD — Blue Canoe Cafe (14 School St.) officially opened its doors this week, with a canoe hanging from the ceiling and a live version of its golden retriever mascot making adorable contributions to the cafe’s social media. In addition to coffee and tea, Blue Canoe offer smoothies, breakfast sandwiches, yogurt bowls, wraps, sandwiches, soups, salads, and a designated kids menu.

NEEDHAM — Capella (45 Chapel St.) is set to open soon in the former Petit Robert Bistro space in Needham. A Craigslist post indicates it could make its debut around April 15, starting out with dinner service and adding lunch in the fall. The menu will include fish, grilled meat, and fresh pasta, and there will be a patio in seasonal months.

NEWTON — A replacement is on the way to the former Grande Kitchen space (118 Needham St.). District 118 Kitchen + Bar has taken over and could open in early April. Follow along on Facebook for updates to its opening timeline.

STONEHAM — Chef Patrick Campbell opens his own suburban restaurant formally on April 3, with quiet previews this week. The alum of Barbara Lynch’s No. 9 Park and opening executive chef of Cafe ArtScience introduces The Stones Common House & Kitchen in his hometown, with pasta, meats, hamburgers, salads, and more. WELLESLEY — Bertucci’s, a longstanding Boston-area pizza staple, has closed down a handful of locations recently, including one in Kenmore Square and now in Wellesley at 380 Washington St. The closure was reportedly related to the restaurant’s lease.

ABINGTON — Double Horse Bistro(800 Brockton Ave.), which opened earlier this month,serves “modern American Asian” dishes for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Breakfast is available all day, and entrees range from French toast, chicken and waffles, omelets, and Benedicts to egg-topped burgers, pho, and Vietnamese fried rice.

DEDHAM — A Mediterranean fast-casual chain out of DC that recently opened one location in Boston adds a second regional spot in Dedham this Friday. Cava officially opens on March 23 at 724 Legacy Pl., but the day before, it’s holding a community day, where it will give out free meals while collecting donations to benefit its non-profit partner Future Chefs. The restaurant’s daily hours will be from 10:45 a.m. to 10 p.m., but this Thursday’s special hours are 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. for lunch and 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. for dinner.

MARLBOROUGH — Crazy Stone (1009 Boston Post Rd E.) recently opened in Marlborough, and it’s serving a menu of sushi, gyoza, and other Japanese entrees, including steak that’s been slow-cooked on hot slate. There’s also crepe cake for dessert.

PEMBROKE — Gather (35 School St.) — no relation to the Briar Group’s Gather in Boston — is a new restaurant serving breakfast and lunch, with a special family-style dinner on Sundays. The menu includes items like breakfast burritos, stuffed French toast, breakfast poutine, grilled cheese, and marinated chicken breast. There are also kids menus available.

Nearby, a new juice and smoothie bar has opened up. Smoosh(254 Church St.) is now open with a menu of smoothies and smoothie bowls, shakes, protein blends, energy shots, and juices. There are also grab-and-go items like pre-cut vegetables, hummus, overnight oats, and quinoa salad.

NEWTON — House of Tandoor (81 Union St.) will open in the neighborhood sometime in April or May. It is the new sibling of Himalayan Bistro, a Nepalese restaurant in West Roxbury, and a website advertising the forthcoming restaurant shows a plate of samosas.

NORWOOD — The town is down a restaurant from Down Under. Well, not quite. Outback Steakhouse (1212 Providence Hwy.) closed for good earlier this month, leaving only a few remaining locations in the area, including those in Somerville, Peabody, Randolph, and Hanover.

PEABODY — Tony C’s Sports Bar & Grill (210 Andover St.) opens a fifth location this May at the Northshore Mall. The restaurant will span more than 7,000 square feet of space and will have at least 70 high-def televisions to accommodate hordes of sports fans. The North Shore can look forward to outdoor dining space, Red Sox paraphernalia, and a menu including items like Philly cheesesteak wontons.

WATERTOWN — J. Dee Asian Bistro (98 Main St.) closed its doors in Watertown, and Ginger Exchange will take its place. With two existing locations in Cambridge’s Inman Square and Boston’s Back Bay/Symphony area, Ginger Exchange now has a “coming soon” note on its website for the forthcoming Watertown location, indicating a spring opening. The restaurant serves a mix of Japanese, Korean, and Thai cuisine, and it’s also related to Mission Sushi & Wok and the delivery-only Wow Wings.

WELLESLEY — The owners of the Cottage have a new restaurant on the way to Wellesley. Door No. 7 (165 Linden St.) will be less family-friendly and more “adult” and “sophisticated” than the Cottage, co-owner Laura Wolfe told Wellesley’s Board of Selectmen, with the team whipping up small plates in an open kitchen. There will also be an oyster bar. Look out for its arrival in late summer, around August.

CONCORD — Adelita (1200 Main St.) opens for lunch and dinner, bringing farm-to-table, organic Mexican food to Concord. (Really farm-to-table: The meats come from owner Kristin Canty’s own farm in New Hampshire.) Canty also operates Woods Hill Table in West Concord and has a restaurant headed for Boston’s Seaport as well, on the former site of the iconic Anthony Pier’s 4. The menu at Adelita, developed by Woods Hill Table’s executive chef Charlie Foster, features items like tacos, ceviche, aguachile de camarones, chorizo taquitos, carne asada plates, and churros for dessert.

LYNN — IronBound Marketplace(3-11 Mt. Vernon)will be an indoor/outdoor market for the North Shore, filling downtown Lynn with food trucks, permanent stalls, and a broad collection of vendors. A block party celebrating the arrival of the market is scheduled for April.

MALDEN — 3 Amigos (375 Main St.) has opened in Malden with a menu full of Mexican dishes like fajitas, fish tacos, and flan, plus tequila infusions. The restaurant makes its corn tortillas in-house and boasts a wide selection of drinks. A grand opening for the restaurant is scheduled for March 14.

NEWTON — El Basha Grille (880 Walnut St.)opened a few weeks ago in Newton, joining existing locations in Worcester, Westborough, and Sudbury. The Newton location is takeout only, offering Mediterranean and Lebanese cuisine, including kebab, mezze items, shawarma, moussaka, falafel, and so much more.

NORTH EASTON — Brunchers in southeast Massachusetts have been going nuts for The Farmer’s Daughter (122 Main St.) since it opened five years ago, serving up New England comfort food featuring plenty of local ingredients. These days, there’s dinner service several nights a week as well — aka “TFD After Dark.” But that’s not all: Chef-owner Chandra Gouldrup is just about ready to open the Farmer’s Daughter’s dinner-focused follow-up, Towneship, in a renovated 150-year-old church nearby (140 Main St.)

The restaurant will make full use of the old church space — think mezzanine seating, cathedral ceilings, and lots of exposed bricks and beams. There will also be two bars, a chef’s table, an exposed kitchen, and outdoor dining.

Cory Williams (Social, the Met) will be executive chef at the new spot, serving up New England cuisine. Stay tuned for an opening date, which is fast approaching.

SALEM — Antique Table (26 Congress St.) expands to Salem this week, opening officially on Friday, March 9. The restaurant has existing locations in Winthrop and Lynn, serving pizza, pasta, seafood, and more.

WAKEFIELD — Gloucester’s Tonno will add a second location in Wakefield (175 North Ave.), which will span more than 4,000 square feet with seating for 110 inside and 65 outdoors on a patio. With a full liquor license, Tonno will serve the same Italian seafood-focused menu as in Gloucester. Owner Anthony Caturano is also behind the acclaimed Prezza in Boston’s North End (24 Fleet St.)

ARLINGTON — Fusion Taste (303 Broadway) has closed down temporarily but could reopen at the same location soon. The restaurant serves Japanese and Chinese dishes, including sushi, noodles, and more. Stay tuned for updates on its return.

Also in Arlington,Bagels by Us (789 Massachusetts Ave.) will close on March 16 after more than 20 years in business. It’s known for its bagels, along with sandwiches, salads, and other diner fare.

BROOKLINE — Hamilton (1366 Beacon St.), a forthcoming restaurant and bar near Coolidge Corner, will serve “good, simple, seasonal food, rooted in classic cooking,” as chef Nick Davidovich (formerly of West Bridge, Salts, and 80 Thoreau) told Boston Restaurant Talk. The 149-seat restaurant, which will have a bar section separate from the main dining room, will also serve beer, wine, and cocktails.

QUINCY — Dorchester’s Windy City Pizza will add a new location in Quincy at 195 Newport Ave. It will serve pizza, subs, salads, wings, and more, and if all goes well, the restaurant could open by the end of the year, offering service until 3 a.m. and delivery.

Elsewhere in Quincy, Sala by Fratelli’s is on the way to 470 Southern Artery, and the person behind it is John Milone, who runs Fratelli’s Pastry Shop (which has three locations in Massachusetts). Sala by Fratelli’s will seat 60, with a menu of desserts and drinks, coffee, and more. Look out for an opening in May.

WORCESTER — The team behind the acclaimed Deadhorse Hill has a new restaurant opening tomorrow, March 1. Simjang (72 Shrewsbury St.) features American-Korean dishes, including Korean fried chicken, pork belly bossam, raw bar items, and more. Soft serve will eventually be on the menu too — flavors like matcha and yuzu — part of a growing trend nationwide.

The team has lots of Boston-area ties: Jared Forman and Sean Woods, two of the co-owners, come from Strip-T’s and other area restaurants, as does chef de cuisine Mike Wenc, and general manager Ellen Benson is an alum of Island Creek Oyster Bar and Giulia.

Meanwhile, Stix Noodle Bar (72 Franklin St.) has opened in Worcester from New England Craft Restaurant Concepts, which also operates Brew on the Grid. The group recently closed down its Cambridge location of Brew on the Grid and will replace it with another Stix Noodle Bar restaurant. Stix serves noodle bowls, stir-fried dishes, and more.

BROOKLINE — Takusan Sushi has closed, and now Xiang Yu China Bistro operates in the 1223 Beacon St. location, serving stir fry, noodles, and items featuring pork belly, beef with hot pepper, and whole fish dishes.

Elsewhere in Brookline, a replacement is on the way for Yasu, which closed down in 2016. Hamilton will open at 1366 Beacon St., and an early look at interior designs shows it to be an expansive space.

DEDHAM — A trendy salad restaurant chain based in DC, Sweetgreen, opens a new location in Dedham at 244 Legacy Pl. on Monday, February 28. The chain will donate proceeds from this opening day to Fresh Truck.

SPRINGFIELD — An MGM Casino in Central Massachusetts will boast several different dining options, including one from chef Michael Mina (of PABU), which will be a coastal Italian concept called Cal Mare. Other options will include The Chandler Steakhouse, South End Market, and TAP Sports Bar.

WAKEFIELD — Public Kitchen took over Caryn’s Sports Bar & Restaurant in Wakefield, opening in mid-February at 397 Main St. The owners have a connection to Giacomo’s, which has locations in Melrose and both Boston’s North End and South End, and the restaurant serves pub-style items like burgers, flatbreads and more.

WALTHAM — The popular Moody’s Delicatessen & Provisions on Moody Street in Waltham drastically expanded its restaurant this week and introduced a larger menu full of seafood and more. There are now oysters available on the half shell, along with scallops, hamachi tiradito, a salmon belly BLT, and a daily crudo. Other menu items include charcuterie, flatbreads, and French onion soup. Moody’s also recently expanded to Back Bay.

WELLESLEY — The tide went out for Wellesley’s juice wave with the closure of Thirst Juice Shop in January. The business had been around since late 2016, and it continues to operate a location in Downtown Boston. Meanwhile, another trendy restaurant will move into town this week: The aforementioned salad chain Sweetgreen opens at 180 Linden St. on Saturday, February 24, and will donate proceeds from the first day to Natick Community Organic Farm.

BEVERLY — Poke continues to grow in popularity on the East Coast, this time landing in Beverly, north of Boston. Lolo Poke is now open (503 Rantoul St.) and serving the Hawaiian raw fish dish, as well as musubi — seaweed wrapped around rice and spam, tofu, salmon, or chicken.

BROCKTON — With existing locations in Falmouth, Saugus, and Northborough, Mexican restaurant Casa Vallarta just added another location in Brockton (610 Oak St.) All locations are family-owned, and the restaurants serve dishes such as burritos, fajitas, tacos, and enchiladas, plus a lengthy list of margaritas.

DEDHAM — Blue Ribbon BBQ made its debut in Dedham this week, opening on February 12 at 350 Washington St., per Boston Restaurant Talk. This planned expansion has been in the works since 2016. Blue Ribbon — with longstanding locations in Arlington and West Newton — is known for its pit-smoked barbecue, including platters of pulled pork, chicken, brisket, ribs, and more.

FOXBORO — CBS Scene Restaurant & Bar (200 Patriot Pl.) closes down for lengthy renovations on February 12 after 10 years in business at Patriot Place. The renovations will coincide with a shift in management, as the Kraft Group and CBS have teamed up with Big Night Entertainment Group (Empire, Red Lantern, Explorateur, more) to run the restaurant. CBS Scene could reopen over the summer.

METHUEN — Pica’s Pub & Grill (10 Ayers Village Rd.)is open in Methuen, and it has a rich history in the area. In 1939, Albert Pica opened a restaurant called Garden Nite Cafe, and his family has run restaurants there ever since. Now, his great-grandson Shane Bernard, and Shane’s father Wayne, are running the new restaurant, which serves burgers, sandwiches (including a muffaletto), appetizers, salads, and entrees like baked mac and cheese and steak tips.

NEEDHAM — Petit Robert Bistro (45 Chapel St.)closed down towards the end of January, but a different restaurant is already lined up to take its place. Cappella will take over the Chapel Street space, under the auspices of Rob Picardi from Prezza in Boston’s North End.

Meanwhile, The James Pub & Provisions (1027 Great Plain Ave.) has opened near Needham Center, with a mix of small and large plates, including soda bread, grilled octopus, leek tart, duck confit salad, spicy beef tartare, seared monkfish, a burger, fish and chips, and grilled pork chops.

NEWBURYPORT — The Angry Donut(38 Washington St.)has found a home and debuted with limited hours last week. The former pop-up turned brick-and-mortar is now serving up doughnuts, scones, muffins, cinnamon rolls, cookies, brownies, and babka, plus coffee, espresso beverages, and tea.

SALEM — Mr. Crepe(83 Washington St.), which has a longtime location in Somerville’s Davis Square, has expanded north to Salem, opening with a familiar menu of stuffed crepes, pastries, soups, and more. The shop operates daily, serving breakfast through dinner.

Adjarian khachapuri at Jana Grill & Bakery

BURLINGTON — Eddie V’s will take the place of Macaroni Grill, which closed down at 50 South Ave. last year. The Austin, TX-based chain of Eddie V’s is part of the Darden Restaurant Group and serves seafood and steak. It’s also coming to Boston proper.

Also in Burlington, Caffe Nero, the London-based chain of coffee shops that’s expanded with dramatic fashion in the Boston area over the last few years, has officially opened within the Burlington Mall (75 Middlesex Tpke.) It is situated near Au Bon Pain and Besito Mexican Restaurant.

FRAMINGHAM — Rasoi Gourmet Indian Kitchen (855 Worcester Rd.)has closed down after more than 20 years in business. A reason for the closure was not given, but posts on Facebook indicate the restaurant may pursue a new location.

MALDEN — Oppa’s Kitchen & Bar (157 Pleasant St.) is closed, at least for now; the business was seized.

NATICK — Kelly’s Roast Beef closes down this month after about 20 years in business in this location, which is inside of Jordan’s Furniture (2 Underprice Way). The owners are reportedly not renewing the lease on the space, though other locations of Kelly’s will remain in operation.

Meanwhile, the Natick Mall will get a Dave & Buster’s(1245 Worcester St.), which aims to take over a section of the current Sears, which is downsizing.

Finally, the owners of The Farmhouse in Needham have a new project planned for Natick. Buttercup is set to arrive at 13 West Central St. this spring from Dora Tavel-Sanchez Luz and Gabriel Sanchez, who aim to serve farm-to-table American dishes alongside a full bar. They’ve launched a Kickstarter campaign to help with funding.

QUINCY — Momo Cafe is up and running in Quincy at 649 Hancock St., serving a selection of desserts and pastries, plus tea and more. (It does not serve momo, Nepalese dumplings.)

SALEM — Smokin’ Betty’s BBQ closed its doors at 94 Lafayette St. on January 14 after a little under a year in business. The owners — who are also behind Gulu-Gulu Cafe and Flying Saucer Pizza Company, which remain open — shared a heartfelt message on Facebook announcing the closure, stating: “At the end of the day it really came down to simple math. We spent more money than we brought in and we projected a larger number of customers than we saw come through our doors.” They intend to continue offering Smokin’ Betty’s food for catering orders and perhaps reopen one day in a smaller venue.

WATERTOWN — Jana Grill & Bakery (2 Watertown St.) opened just a week ago, and it’s serving a menu of Armenian dishes, including egg boats, babaganoush, shawarma, flatbreads, and breakfast items. It’s open daily from 10 a.m. to 10 or 11 p.m.

Ramen at Broth by the Hangover

ARLINGTON — Chilly Cow (451 Massachusetts Ave.) will convert into Abilyn’s Frozen Bakery, under the same ownership. The ice cream shop will serve largely the same items with some additions, with a goal of making a name for itself as a national wholesale brand.

SAUGUS — A planned expansion of Kane’s Donuts will likely happen this spring, as the popular shop prepares to open a location with a drive-thru window within the Essex Landing development, which many will remember as the site of the Route 1 miniature golf course and its recognizable orange dinosaur statue, which still stands.

TAUNTON — A new Fratelli’s Pastry Shop is open (1 Washington St.), and it joins two more in Quincy and Weymouth. Like its counterparts, the Taunton shop serves specialty cakes, cupcakes, pastries, cookies, pies, and breads, in addition to a menu of sandwiches, salads, pizzas, calzones, and more Italian dishes. The Taunton bakery is open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

WELLESLEY — The Cottage (190 Linden St.) temporarily closed down on January 2 to allow for updates, including a menu change and interior renovations courtesy of Taniya Nayak, a former HGTV host and designer who has worked on several restaurants in the area, including Yellow Door Taqueria and Lower Mills Tavern, among others. Her designs for The Cottage will reportedly feature natural wood and greenery. Culinary director Peter Hansen will oversee updates to the menu. Expect The Cottage to reopen mid-January.

WEYMOUTH — Gourmet Oriental (625 Washington St.)has closed down. The restaurant served a mixture of Chinese dishes and offered karaoke, live music, and other entertainment.

WORCESTER — The team behind The Hangover Pub (Worcester’s bacon-filled restaurant) has a new restaurant focused on ramen. Broth is now open next door at 106 Green St., serving five different soups (including a vegetarian option), light appetizers, several cocktails, and two desserts made with bacon.

LEXINGTON — Yangtze River(25 Depot Sq.), a Chinese-American restaurant that first opened in the 1970s, has closed down, per Boston Restaurant Talk. It served lunch and dinner, plus dim sum on the weekends. A different restaurant called Sanyo will take its place.

MARLBOROUGH — A new spot joined the interesting restaurant names category: Thairiffic is now open in Marlborough (128 Main St.), serving items like massaman curry, tom yum soup, and fresh rolls. The restaurant also offers takeout.

NEEDHAM — It’s been many months since chef Rachel Klein departed the restaurant that bears her initials, RFK Kitchen (30 Dedham Ave.), and now it’s getting a rebranding. L&K (“lounge and kitchen”) grandly reopens tomorrow, December 28, with new managers and a new menu by new executive chef Matthew Kovach. There’s also a new cocktail menu and selection of “lounge bites.”

NEWBURYPORT — A pop-up called The Angry Donut has permanent aspirations. Founder Tom Quill is a native of Newburyport, and he connected with baker Jill Passen to launch The Angry Donut, appearing as a pop-up and at farmers markets around the region. Now, they’re working to secure a permanent location and have launched a Kickstarter to help fund the process, offering rewards for those who donate.

WESTFORD — Go to The Okipoké(8 Cornerstone Sq., Unit B) and eat yourself some fish. The new restaurant in Westford serves a wide range of options, including bowls, burritos, and salads, topped with tuna, salmon, shrimp, tofu, and more.

WORCESTER — A place for Vietnamese noodles and seafood opened recently in Worcester. My Sister’s Crawfish II(442 Park Ave.)joins Dorchester’s My Sister’s Crawfish in serving rice plates, bun, noodles, spring rolls, and crawfish by the pound, plus bubble tea.

Tuna poke tostadas at Bueno Malo

ANDOVER — “The flavors of Mexico meet the heartbeat of Southern California” at Bueno Malo, which opened about six weeks ago in Andover. Mike Reidy and Franco Lozano III teamed up for the restaurant, which has a full bar and serves tacos and burritos stuffed with steak, grilled chicken, shrimp, fish, bean and cheese, and even tater tots. For dinner, there are wings, taquitos, ceviche, nachos, and street corn.

DEDHAM — Legacy Place continues to grow its food and beverage options, adding one more this week: Temazcal Tequila Cantina’snewest location, now open, spans 7,000 square feet, filling nearly every inch with Mexican dishes and more than 250 varieties of tequila.

NORTH ANDOVER — Howling Wolf Taqueria, featured in Eater Boston’s Salem dining guide, already has one fast-casual location in Marblehead, but this spring it will add another in North Andover. The new Howling Wolf Express will operate with a full liquor license within a space at 550 Turnpike St.

SAUGUS — One of the most recognizable plots of land in Saugus will soon be home to a new restaurant. A development project at the site of the former Hilltop Steak House will bring a 110 Grill restaurant to the area, along with an undetermined fast-casual restaurant. The Saugus 110 Grill will join several existing locations around the state, and a bunch more are on the way.

SWAMPSCOTT — Local-born chain B.Good will expand to the North Shore, adding a restaurant in Swampscott at 450 Paradise Rd. B.Good serves a line of locally-sourced fast-casual meals, including salads, burgers, sandwiches, and grain bowls.

WALPOLE — A source for beer will go quietly into the night in Walpole: British Beer Company on Route 1 will shutter on Christmas Eve, with reports indicating the business couldn’t reach an agreement with the landlord. There are 13 other locations in the region.

Mooyah burgers

BERLIN — Mooyah Burgers, Fries & Shakes opened its newest Massachusetts location on December 11 (48 Highland Commons East). The Texas-based fast-food chain serves a menu true to its silly name, focusing on burgers, which are topped with items like bacon and jalapeños. There are turkey burger and chicken options for sandwiches as well, and the restaurant also has vegetarian options, plus hot dogs, french fries, and salads, along with shakes.

BRAINTREE — The Braintree side of the Weymouth Landing development will welcome a new restaurant, Bates Bar and Grill(2 Commercial St.), taking the place of the Landing Pub and Ultimate Pizza, which were torn down after a fire.

MELROSE — A restaurant serving sushi and pan-Asian dishes is now open in Melrose. Tsukiji Bistro is located at 505 Main St., in the same building as Stearns & Hill’s Bistro.

SALEM — Stacia’s Place closed down (97 Bridge St.) on December 1. The restaurant had been around for 35 years, serving subs of all varieties, along with soup, salads, wings, hot dogs, and several other items.

Also in Salem, Victoria Station has been shut down, with reports indicating that it had not renewed the lease for the space at 86 Wharf St.

WELLESLEY — Smith & Wollensky plans to open a steakhouse location in Wellesley — taking over the longtime Blue Ginger space at 583 Washington St., as previously reported — and has set a target opening date for mid-April 2018. There are two existing locations in Boston proper, along with other steakhouses in Chicago, Columbus, Houston, Miami Beach, and London.

Fiorella’s Concord

CONCORD — Fiorella’s has arrived in Concord, joining an existing location in Newton (and takeout-oriented siblings dubbed Fiorella’s Express in Belmont, Cambridge, and Brighton). The new restaurant, located at 24 Walden St. (the former Bondir space), serves the familiar menu of Italian dishes in a full-service dining format.

FRAMINGHAM — The beloved J&M Diner is back in business after a devastating fire pushed it out of its original home back in March. The new restaurant opened at 50 Worcester Rd. at 6 a.m. on November 27, with a line out the door.

WALTHAM — A Brothers Marketplace is on the way to Waltham and will open within The Merc at Moody and Main (45 Moody St.), per Boston Restaurant Talk. There are other locations in Weston and Medfield, offering retail goods along with prepared foods.

CONCORD — A new market on the way to Concord will also serve prepared foods, and the folks behind it also run Trail’s End Cafe and Lincoln Kitchen. Concord Market will be located on Lowell Road and could open in about a year.

DEDHAM — Yep, there’s another Caffe Nero open. This one’s at Legacy Place (218 Legacy Pl.); it debuted on November 20.

MARBLEHEAD — A new place for coffee and food will open within a storefront on School Street that was previously home to Atomic Cafe. Blue Canoe Cafe (14 School St.) will serve coffee, sandwiches, smoothies, and baked goods, along with bags of Atomic coffee. Renovations are underway.

PEABODY — Seawitch Restaurant & Oyster Bar, a longtime restaurant and fish market, is now under new ownership with a new name — well, two: The market arm of the business became North Shore Lobster and the restaurant became SeaGrilz. Both are open and located at 203 Newbury St. (Rte. 1).

Peabody will also see the addition of a La Siesta restaurant, which has an existing location in Winthrop. The Mexican restaurant will open within a building under redevelopment at 1 Main St.

LYNN — A Central American chicken chain called Pollo Campero (25 State St.) grandly opened a location in Lynn this week, serving fried and grilled chicken. There are also two other locations nearby, in East Boston and Chelsea.

WAKEFIELD — A new restaurant called Public Kitchen (395 Main St.) will take over for Caryn’s Sports Bar & Restaurant in Wakefield. The partners in the new restaurant are all connected to Giacomo’s, which has locations in Melrose and both Boston’s North End and South End. WORCESTER — A 1920s-themed restaurant called Josephine (551 Main St.) will open within the Hanover Theater in Worcester around spring 2018, and the person behind it is Chris Rassias, who also operates The Farimount Grille in Hyde Park.

ARLINGTON — Waltham’s Santa Banta has officially relocated and reopened in Arlington as Singh Saab(444 Massachusetts Ave.). The restaurant offers a large menu of Punjabi dishes and a lunch buffet.

BURLINGTON — Singh Saab also got a sister restaurant in Burlington this week, an Indochinese restaurant called Singh Ching (184 Cambridge St.)

NEW BEDFORD — dNB Burgers (22 Elm St.)once again fell victim to vandalism this week, with a Facebook post showing a brick that had been thrown through one of the windows. This is the fourth instance of vandalism or break-in at the restaurant.

NORTH SCITUATE — A fire destroyed 50-year-old Jamie’s Grille & Pub in North Scituate this past weekend, and the building will likely be torn down. A post on the restaurant’s Facebook page indicated there were no injuries. There is no word yet on whether the owners will rebuild.

MARLBOROUGH — In an attempt to rebound from closures, Friendly’s is testing a new prototype restaurant in Marlborough, with plans to open more locations in the next several years, MassLive reports. The new restaurants feature drive-through windows, which 10 existing locations will also get. The Marlborough location is slated to open on November 6 at the Apex Center on Route 20 (180 Boston Post Rd. W.)

NEEDHAM — The James Pub & Provisions will open within the former home of the Centre Cafe (1027 Great Plain Ave.), per Boston Restaurant Talk. The owners aim to “bring the pubs of fond memory into the light once more,” according to the restaurant’s website, and it will reportedly open some time this fall.

WOBURN — A new restaurant called Shallots (920 Main St.) opened in September with an Asian fusion lunch and dinner menu that includes items like stir-fry noodles, panang curry, mango fried rice, chili duck, steak, and spicy eggplant, among others.

LYNN — The White Rose Coffee House has closed, as The Daily Item reports, due to drama prompted by anti-police statements that the owner’s daughter (and a manager at the cafe) made on Facebook. Owner Kato Mele apologized, fired her daughter, and invited police to the cafe to make amends, but it was not enough.

NEEDHAM — The nearly decade-old Spiga (18 Highland Cir.) has reopened after a big revamp, with chef Marisa Iocco in charge as the new co-owner. The Italian restaurant underwent a menu and design overhaul over the summer.

PEABODY — Regina Pizzeria has closed down its location at the Northshore Mall, sharing an update on Twitter that “we closed at that location because the Mall took our space to make a new entrance.”

WOBURN — Arcenia’s Cucina Rustica closed its doors in Woburn and has now been replaced by a different Italian restaurant called Fortunato’s (428 Main St.)

BRAINTREE — Davio’s officially opened its newest location in Braintree this week at the South Shore Plaza. This is the ninth location for the restaurant.

CHELMSFORD — The Establishment is a family owned and operated restaurant at 75 Princeton St. that debuted in September with a menu ranging from burgers and pizza to baked haddock, steak tips, and more.

CONCORD — As Country Kitchen owner Trish Irons prepares for retirement, the restaurant prepares to close on December 15, per Boston Restaurant Talk. Irons is pursuing options, including having someone else take over the restaurant.

LOWELL — Loui Loui Louisiana Seafood opened a new location in Lowell a few months ago, and its recent growth has gone beyond the Northeast. The restaurant had just two other locations when it opened in Allston earlier this year (in Stoneham, Massachusetts, and Fort Lee, New Jersey), and now its presence reaches as far as Duluth, Georgia, with six total restaurants.

STONEHAM — One restaurant closed down and another is on the way to Stoneham, just north of Boston. Felicia’s (423 Main St.) shuttered over the weekend after more than 50 years in business. Meanwhile, chef Patrick Campbell (previously of Cafe ArtScience and No. 9 Park) plans to open The Stones Common House & Kitchen in the town square.

BRAINTREE — Davio’s Northern Italian Steakhouse will soon add a new member of the family with the opening of its Braintree restaurant at 250 Granite St. The massive restaurant, slated to open early next week at South Shore Plaza, spans 10,000 square feet and serves pasta made in-house, seafood, beef entrees, and more.

DEDHAM — Fast food chicken chain Chick-Fil-A (140 Providence Hwy.) opened its eleventh location in Massachusetts last week. The beloved, albeit controversial, restaurant is known for giving away free chicken to the first 100 customers on opening day, and Dedham’s opening drew a crowd ahead of time.

NEEDHAM — Cook (109 Chapel St.) opened over the weekend, joining an existing location in Newton (825 Washington St.) Right now, Cook is open for dinner, but lunch and brunch will follow soon. The restaurant seats 115 and serves items like lobster sliders, chili-rubbed flat-iron steak, and tagliatelle with meatballs.
