okay so, this situation got very out of hand. please just let me clarify some things.
obviously i never intended for anyone to receive death threats or hateful anons of any kind. i have seen that these blogs are getting multiple nasty anons, which is just ridiculous. i do think that this is just one or two users who want to create more drama though. like this and this is quite obviously the same person, lol. if you think that i wanted anyone to send people asks like that you obviously can't fucking read.
i genuinely thought that everyone knew that posting gifs without credit/permission is not okay. and that everyone knew that this is basic fandom etiquette most places.
i could have dmed (some of) the people i tagged before posting that. i say "some of" in parenthesis because a few of them i have talked to and others have been called out multiple times (in reblogs or in comments) and not done anything about it. and i have dmed multiple people behind the scenes but they always block me right away and never changed their behavior, so i was getting tired of that. still could have tried it first.
the title was unnecessarily rude. my very weak excuse is just that that's what i had as a title when this post was in my drafts and i didn't change it before hitting post. i meant it more as "these are the people i know have stolen gifs at one point", but i see now how it was hurtful.
i do stand by what i did when it comes to the people who refuse to take accountability (and have been refusing to do that for a long time). but i would like to offer a sincere apology to @srue-on-fire and @suckerwitch who received some pretty nasty anons. it also wasn't fair of me to group you together with the actual thieves. and thank you so much for apologizing for reposting, adding links to the originals, and above all for being nice about it when i called you out in a post like that. i truly am sorry.
the reason i even did this is because as i said above, dming/reblogging the post calling them out rarely does anything (it has literally never worked when i've done it). and this problem is huge in this fandom, and i was getting sick of every other post on the for you tab being a stolen gifset (with, in a lot of cases, more notes than the original). so i tried a different approach. i am happy that more people know about kenneth and fanfic and that it seems like wtfj0sten is gone, but as i said, i regret including the blogs mentioned above. i have removed them from the list and turned off reblogs. my biggest regret is honestly that i didn't turn off reblogs right away, it didn't even cross my mind as an option. but then it would have been easier to remove people/fix my mistake right away.
sorry again to srue and mila.
#i don't know how to balance trying to tell people this is wrong and not being unnecessarily rude#whenever i have tried to be kind it doesn't work#and when i'm more aggressive i am /too/ aggressive and hurt people#i don't think i was too aggressive when it comes to people who have repeatedly claimed sets as their own and refuse to add credit#but i definitely was to the others#i am happy though that this has gotten some attention and that maybe other people who have seen it will think twice before reposting gifs :#and that more people know that pretty much all gifmakers do not like when their gifs are reposted. the only ones that i know that#ādon't careā doesn't care because they've given up at this point#but i don't really want to do that#as i've said in an earlier post about this my (and lot of other peoples) reaction is based on weeks/months/years of frustration#i've been trying to stop people from stealing other people stuff since i made video edits in 2016. and i've barely made a difference lmao

FAVE CREATORS ART CHALLENGE:
Started by Ana!
@withered-rose-with-thorns First of all, I want to thank you for this idea! The creators in this site deserve all possible appreciation and positive feedback! Ana, your HOTD and TROP edits are always 10/10. One of my favorites is this Rhaenicent gifset. I also have to say a special thanks to you for your graphics edits! You are the one who still does that kind of things. This Alicent one is really pretty.
@letthefairyinyoufly Kadi is always a delight to me, especially the way you highlight blue, green or yellow colors in your edits! Is just a top tier <3 I like this Haladriel gifset sm and every 2x07 Alicent gifset because I adore the way you color her blue dress š.
@danaa-scully Gaby, I literally love every edit you make in HOTD fandom. And of course especially Alicent's related, I mean they are literally always full of meaning and always so well suited to our green queen. But my favorite edit of yours is Rhaenicent one. I like this concept. And I want to mention that your edits for period dramas pieces are always incredible as well!
@ohno-elrond I'm in awe away from your TROP edits, and I can't choose one, although I really remember this set of yours, this one is pretty with beautiful shade of blue. Also honorable mention of this one because... you know why š.
@rhaenyradaemons Julia, I love your fashion gifsets series. I like the layouts you usually use, it's show outfits in details. And I really like and want to mention your Charlie Hunnam as Aegon Targaryen gifset. It's brilliant.
@daenerys-stormborn When I think of ASOIAF or HOTD/GOT combined with Tumblr, the first thing that comes to my mind is Mali's blog. I don't know anyone who has been as passionate about this fandom as she has for so long, and who has created so many amazing pieces for it over the years. That Daenerys gifset is *chefās kiss* š
@payidaresque You are the epitome of talent and hard work, and every time I see one of the best works, you do something even more exciting. And it doesn't matter which fandom it is for, every edit is literally a work of art and is thought out to the smallest detail. I also want to point out your parallels between different characters or pairings, I mean, you have a very good eye! I adore this Sauron gifset and Kelena one <3
@lokihiddleston This is a person who has held the Loki fandom for many years. If there is any gifset with Loki that you want to find, this one is definitely already made, by Laurianne and in the best quality. You're also really one of the people people that keep Sylki ship afloat. Huge thanks to you for that š. It's so difficult for me to choose a gifset, because there are so many that I adore. But this one and this Sylki are memorable to me.
@jesperfahxey Irina, your edits are always so bright and full of colors, creativity and originality! And your our Photoshop skills are excellent, also I can't help but admire your beautiful icons. My fave set (one of them) and I adore this Ciri icons pack, so cute!
@marv-el-spot I love your Sylki edits so much. You're the number one when it comes to creativity. Especially with Loki and Sylvie :). The way you use textures, fonts and different color schemes is incredible! One of my fave gifsest of yours and this Sylvie one <3
@ceeyouteaĀ I really like your passion for Haladriel and your edits of it, and the way you use a variety of quotes, poetry, or lyrics. Everything fits very well together.Ā This one I really like because I'm currently obsessed with the song, hehehe.
@seamayweed One of the talented gifmakers is here, especially in HOTD fandom. Your Alicent related sets are simply masterpieces. Every single one. Literally. It's hard to choose one, althoughĀ I want to mention this one.
#fave creators art challenge#tag games#personal#i actually have so many favorite creators in various fandoms#but here i mostly mentioned the hotd trop and loki because i'm too into in them recently i guess#maybe i'll do part two later

Hi! Question for you, as a gifmaker: how do you compliment someone who makes gifs?
For artists you can mention their line work, their colour palettes, composition etc, and for writers you can mention quotes or imagery or character moments you enjoyed - what sort of things should you mention for a gifmaker?
I'm sure it's appreciated to have someone say "wow your gifs look really cool/pretty/amazing" etc, but I know it always means more to me when someone picks up on specific skills or methods needed for my craft - not to downplay more general nice comments! But having someone mention specifics always feels better (to me at least š
)
I love seeing all these incredible gifsets but I don't know how to give specific compliments - what kind of details do you notice in gifsets that people can look out for to comment on when they see them? All I can think of is sharpness? Image quality? I know there's SO much more to them but I don't know the language to talk about them š
I'd really appreciate any pointers you have!
oooooo! okay so first I'll explain about how you make a gif:
you make gifs by taking a video clip (or screenshots depending on how you do it) and you form them into a timeline. then you use adjustment layers to change the brightness, colors, vibrance etc
Imo the BEST compliment i can get as a gifmaker is 'wow your colors are so beautiful!' 'theyre so bright, uniform (because sometimes its hard to get them looking the same in different shots (yes really!))'
like you said I like getting compliments like 'these gifs are so SHARP (smooth, the quality is so good)' that's a great complement to get for sure
and last but certainly not least 'i love these moments you chose!' because depending on the quality gifs can range from about 20-100 frames (that is 1-5 seconds) so sometimes we are not able to get exactly what we want in each gif.
personally my favorite thing about giffing is the coloring part so it always makes me feel amazing when someone mentions that!
I love this question! I'll add more and reblog if I can think of any.
also gifmakers please sound off in the replies about what your favorite compliments are to get!

@hesbuckcompton-baby tagged me in this one, ty! šI know a lot of folks have gone and done this one already, but please if you wanna do it consider yourself tagged right now! misc tag game!
favorite place in the world youāve visited?
I really loved Prague when I went there for a citytrip aeons ago. The atmosphere of that city and its chill style really vibed with me. Weād rented an apartment, so it felt way less like visiting and more like living there for a couple of days. Remember just standing on the balcony in the very early morning watching the locals waking up and starting their day ā that sense of utter inner tranquillity I had in that moment has really stuck with me.
something youāre proud of yourself for?
Uhm, I dropped out of school when I was fifteen. That part isnāt a point of pride, just a fact of life. And I had a lot of people pushing me this way and that way since, telling me Iād never make it and that I needed to sacrifice pretty much all of my mental health in order to fit the standard idea of what fifteen-year-olds should be doing with their time. I didnāt listen to them and started to carve out my own way instead. Weāre almost twenty years on from my dropping out, and I can safely say this: I made it. Iāve got a great job I love, Iāve got people around me who lift me up, and my mental health is good enough for me to thrive 90% of the time. I have worked my ass off to get to where I am right now, and fought a long uphill battle to make life sing again. And itās made me so resilient and so certain of myself, you know? Iām superproud of myself for sticking around in this world and making something awesome of my own path in it.
favorite books?
Rebecca (by Daphne du Maurier), Anna Karenina (by Tolstoy), Son of the Shadows (by Juliet Marillier), The Braided Path trilogy (by Chris Wooding), and Ash: A Secret History (by Mary Gentle).
something that makes your heart happy when thinking about it?
The prospect of curling up on the couch/in bed with a really good book for company. Canāt beat that!
favorite thing about your culture?
The way I almost went āwhich cultureā lmao. š Which really almost is an answer in itself, as I think Dutch culture is a collective of many different things? Weāre traders/explorers by nature and our identity tends to slip into something pretty multifaceted. That said, I come from a specific part of this country where people still routinely speak a dialect and where the cultural events are a lot more in-your-face celebratory. My fave thing about this particular cultural offshoot, which I grew up in, is that you can play all the Dutch-language songs you could ever want without anyone bothering to so much as hum the tuneā¦ but the second you play a song in my dialect is the second you get the whole crowd singing along. Something about poetic expression? Yeah.
when did you join the hbo war fandom? what was the first show you watched?
In 2020! At least, thatās when I immersed into the fandom here on Tumblr and watched Band of Brothers/The Pacific back-to-back. Gen Kill was actually my first, though, as Iād read that book some years before and watched that one without fandom-dipping first.
have you read any of easy companyās books? if so, which ones were your favorite?
Yes! Bill & Babeās book is so nice.
favorite hbo war character and your favorite moment with them?
*inhales* Speirs. Night time, speech time. Local forest cryptid says shady shit about war, more at eleven. Iāll never be normal about him so.
do you make content for any fandoms, if so; what sort of content?
Fun fact: I usually advocate against using the term ācontentā when describing creative pursuits, for reasons Iām not gonna get into right now because thatās a rant for when Iām feeling particularly feisty. That said, Iām a writer and gifmaker. Iām more known for the latter, but the former is where my heart really lies.
favorite actor/actress and your favorite film of theirs?
I have a few favorites thatāre way up there in terms of how mesmerizing they are, but Iām going to mention one that isnāt mentioned nearly enough: Tom Pelphrey. Truly one of the most captivating actors of our time. He tends to do TV shows more than movies ā please, look up his monologue from Ozark if you have a moment ā and so I get to rec Banshee to yāall while Iām at it. Heās amazing in that.
favorite quote/s that you wish to share with others?
Look, Iāve lived by the words āseize the day because tomorrow you might be deadā for years now. I think it originated in Buffy, but Iāve adopted it and itās mine now. Life wisdom from yours truly, boom.
random fact your mutuals/followers donāt know about you?
Iām really into astronomy, outer space, etc.
if youāre a writer, do you need a beta reader?
I used to have beta readers back when I started writing, yeah, so Iām not gonna advocate against using one. Sometimes you need that extra pair of eyes, that nitpicking, that moment of being confronted with your own hubris. Iām my own beta at this point in my writing journey, but I still have a group of people around me who get first dibs on reading my stuff because I trust theyāll give it to me straight and pick out any lingering idiocies on my end. Which doesnāt stop me from shoving something onto the internet that has never seen an edit a day in its life, ahem.
three things that make you smile?
Put me near an alpaca and watch my face brighten, I dare ya. Also big fan of bookstores. Even bigger fan of AO3ās notification mails for fic reviews.
any nicknames you like?
Killyās my most-used nickname, and weāre vibing!
list some people you love to see around on tumblr!
If I follow you, I love to see ya. Thatās just how this thing works. But Iām gonna shout out my writing-and-life-support crew here because without them I would be nowhere much at all: @mercurygray, @junojelli, @shoshiwrites, @arethosedustyjumpwings. You lot are the real deal whoāve stuck to me like glue, and that means so much more than words can say.
what would you do during a zombie apocalypse?
Look, I have a zombie survival plan drawn up in my head but it essentially involves not being near people ever again. Because weāve gone through a pandemic now and I donāt trust people to follow quarantine instructions or anything else that mildly inconveniences them. So. In the event of a zombie apocalypse, Iām sorry in advance, Iām gonna cry-scream-piƱatapunch my way through any and all stupidity. If you see me running, please know Iām being chased because thereās no other way youāll ever see me running voluntarily.
favourite movie?
Singinā In The Rain. This needs no further explanation.
do you like horror movies?
Yes and no. I do not vibe with horror movies that get really gory for the sake of shock value. Canāt do it, wonāt do it. But Iām a biiiiiiig fan of the final girl trope, I canāt go a day without pondering vampires, and I really love old horror movies and the progression of horror stories throughout the years. Itās fascinating to me to see how specific types of horror interact with the history/culture of that time it was created in: horror is never created in a vacuum, and its storytelling beats are so inspirational.

Hi queen!!!
Thank you for all these gifs you'vemade! Just wondering, have you ever thought of putting a watermark on your work? I worry you're not gonna get the credit you deserve!
oh my darling you must be (somewhat) new to my blog hahahh :') anyway, hi love!! you're so welcome, i'm happy you enjoy them! <3 now, for the long part that i'll spare my usuals on here cause i sound like a broken record at times:
i used to have a watermark on them! they got reposted into oblivion. i asked people not to, i got a lot of hate, been called a bully etc. people don't understand why 'i make gifs if i don't want people to use them' because they fail to understand gifs can be similar to art, rather than just plain reaction gifs to repost 'omg hot' above. i enjoy making things pretty, but apparently it's wrong to not want to have them reposted. with my art, no one has that issue though. funny how that goes :) had a short period where i would even add the whole 'freckledjoes do not repost' on a gif, and people still claimed to not see it. like you don't stare at a gif over and over when you take the time to steal it, lol. i've posted with and without, and the amount of reposts is the same. it's just extra work for me. like, i prefer people enjoy my gifs on my page, giving it the love it deserves on my posts, but instead they prefer to get likes with a gif they put zero effort in. often they don't even bother to interact with my content (especially not the twitter folks!) so yeah, i could get 'credit' if i put my name on there, but all it does is cause more reposts, which i generally did not want :) maybe at some point i'll put it on them again, if i ever consider it fun to see it blasted everywhere, but currently i prefer to pretend people did not know i don't appreciate reposts. fun fact: had a person follow me on twitter recently. i posted 1 gif there (cause due to the reposts instead of retweets, it didn't feel as fun to post a lot there anymore so i only RARELY do it). they didn't interact with it whatsoever, just reposted it (which is more effort than a retweet i would say). that's the fun of being a gifmaker. people will not repost fiction or art, but gifs? S U R E. it's only a filter, right? they say the same about edits (which i do watermark most of the time). it's funny how it's so hard to understand why people make gifs if they don't want them used by others (it's fun, it's a creative outlet, it's pretty) but have no problem understand why people make art (it's fun, it's a creative outlet, it's pretty), and understand that reposting of art isn't cool. i'm so sorry for the suuuuuuper long answer, but this is the story :D it has its ups and downs. sometimes i wanna watermark again, sometimes i don't. you're so sweet for saying i deserve the credit, sounds like you value this stuff and that means i appreciate you as a person :) much love to you! hope you have an awesome day.

this is kinda vent-y and i donāt know how to explain this better butā i miss sanders sides. and i miss when the fandom was truly active. you can only do so much fanon content after such a longĀ āāhiatusāā (if we can even call that). i miss the sides, i miss seeing any new official tss content and getting so happy from it that my face hurts from smiling so much. i miss being fascinated by fanarts, i miss seeing familiar usernames from people that are (to a certain degree) well known in this fandom in my dash. i miss searching for new fics to read every once in a while because i have a Very Specific Taste and have already sorted through all that had my interest. i got into this fandom in late 2019, and even by that time it wasnātĀ āāvery activeāā compared to earlier years i guess, but compared to now, it was thriving.Ā
itās just kinda... disappointing. i thought i would never get uninterest in sanders sides or thomasā content in general, but now i see myself every day more and more far away from whatever it is that he creates. i still think thomas is an amazing and talented person, but... thereās been a while i havenāt got excited for his content.Ā
i really liked roleslaying with roman, and the characters and pretty much everything about the series. itās so fun and has a lot of potential fandom/fanon wise, but i think it canāt help but live in sanders sidesā shadow. specially with the name being roleslaying with ROMAN, even though theyāre different version of the same characters, we associate one thing with another. i didnāt really mind the merch videos at first, but considering we havenāt had a new tss episode in over a year... itās getting embarassing. like really, really embarassing. like, i wouldnāt release a new merch for a series i havenāt produced for in more then a year because i would genuinely be ashamed of myself for doing so.
itās just really unfortunate that it has come to this situation. i get that the season finale is a big project, but he has been working on it for AT LEAST over a year (and iām not exaggerating). meanwhile several other videos have come out. i mean, of course he doesnāt owe us anything but... even considering from a productive point of view -- it takes a lot of time and effort from script writing, costume prepping, songwriting, filming, editing, all of that -- i personally feel like there is no reasonable explanation for a new episode taking this long to come out. itās not like heās procastinating, heās just neglecting it and hoping people will forget about it.Ā
sanders sides got me lots of positive experiences -- a fun fandom, new friends, amazing fanon creations, incredible characters with so much potential for more development... it was what got me into gifmaking in the first place, but now there is just... i donāt really get excited about it anymore.Ā
it kinda feels like we, the audience, have been left in a limbo. even if thomasā would come out and sayĀ āāhey sanders sides is gonna be discountinuedāā it would be... at least SOMETHING. like we would know better than having blind faith and waiting for new content, you know. either get it done or end it, i donāt know.
#ts criticism#and don't even get me STARTED on the janus 'casual outfit' photos that was ugly as shit#but honestly he asked for what he should wear for it ON TWITTER so really what could we expect#i mean . give me like half an hour and an internet connection to pinterest i will make a better casual janus look#i'm not even joking#also if anyone's interestĀ i'm highkey considering moving on to making barbie movies gifs instead. on another blog obviously#at least these get me excited and the barbie brainrot is real

gifmaker / cc wrapped 2023
I have been tagged by @soonhoonsol and @khaotunq to post my fave and most popular gif sets I've done in 2023. This is interesting because I got tagged in two different fandoms where in one of them I'm like pretty new in so I have to do a bit of extra mentions and stuff to keep it even :) Thanks to both of you for tagging me, I really appreciate it. Anyway here we go
I actually only gotten back into giffing properly in March and therefore started this tumblr to keep it clean and tidy and all my reblogs and stuff are on my main @lucky-cat-cafe. So for this tag I will have to skip the first two months (You can check my archive if you want to see everything from last year). March: Most popular: Wooyoung & YunhoĀ dancing to āGood Luckā by Beast Favourite: HyungwonĀ being the cutest most precious bean April: Most popular: a tie between San and Bang Chan Favourite: I think a tie between San and Hyungwon May: Most popular: WooSan by A MILE! This is my most popular post of all year. Can not believe I even have one gif that reached 1k Favourite: Joohoney's Freedom set. Too much effort tho June: Most popular: ChangkyunĀ ā¦Ā OVERDRIVE OFFICIAL MV TEASER #2 Favourite: I would say the first two birthday gif sets I did (Shownu & Yeosang). I really like them but after a while it was too much pressure and I stopped them. July: Most popular: Choi San Birthday Gif Set Favourite: Hyungwon August: Most popular: Song Mingi Birthday Gif Set Favourite: Hyungwon September: (The month were I got dragged into a new fandom which I mentioned before haha) Most popular: S.Coups Favourite: Choi San because GAWD!! Special mention: Sand, aka my favourite boy of all time. Fight me! (I never wanted to watch Thai dramas but I have been loyal to First Kanaphan for 4 months now) October: Most popular: FirstKhao (oooh I didn't think I'd have a popular one in that fandom but I forgot about this one) *heart eyes* Favourite: ^this one but to make it fair I'll also choose WooSang because there are a few boys whose smile I absolutely adore and First and Wooyoung are definitely in the top with Kihyun and Yunho November: Most popular: HongjoongĀ ā§ The World Ep.Fin : Will Official Trailer (will I ever be over this comeback? Probably not) Favourite: Gaipa in Moonlight Chicken Episode 1 (also been loyal to this boy and branching out to other series...look at me go) December: (I did 65 gif set in this month...what is wrong with me lmao) Most popular: FelixĀ ā¦ Louis Vuitton Favourite: Yunho and Wooyoung because they are so dear to my heart Well this has been fun. Here's to a good 2024. I will continue as I ended the year. I will not continue the birthday gif sets, which is sad but they take too much effort and time and I need to get back to other things that aren't giffing so I need to slow it down a bit. I will continue my regular gifs the way I have been doing now. There will be more FirstKhao stuff for the people who have started to follow me from the Thai drama side of things and I will continue my rewatch of Only Friends and giffing all the scenes (and other shows once I'm done with that). I will continue my MV series for Ateez and Monsta X and whatever else comes across my radar. Thanks to all the people who have started to follow this blog when I was brand new and for sticking with it. I honestly don't know who I want to tag for this because it's already 2024 and I don't know who has been tagged and who has done it so if you haven't been tagged and want to do this, consider yourself tagged by me. Thanks again to @soonhoonsol and @khaotunq for tagging me š¤š
#tagged#i tried a few different things but i think my gif sets really still look the same as they did in march#i've been in a creativity slump for 2 years now#usually i do art#so i actually came into giffing again after years (literally) to do at least something productive#but you can tell my efforts aren't that great because i just don't have the motivation to be very fancy with the gif sets#hopefully this year i can try out a few cool things but i won't promise anything#jay š¤š#chey š¤š

hi becca! i come to you with a gif question? cry for help? lol do you know of any resources on how to handle camera cuts?
So when there's two shots, let's say two people and i want to gif person A but the segment I want to gif has a shot of person B right in the middle. once i remove the shot in the middle i can still see the cut in the gif. it's not a lot but i can see the gif sort of jumping from one half to the other. So far I merged the last frame of the first half with the first frame of the second half and it improved a bit but i don't know if there's a better method, that you know of maybe? I can't really find any similar enough frames that would give me a seamless join, since what im giffing is a monster that is moving around. I don't know if this is at all comprehensible, feel free to ignore me.
i love all your work! your coloring is flawless and your gifs are always so so pretty. I hope you're having a good day today :)
hi! thank you so much for your kind words, they really do mean a lot to me! i hope you're having a good day too! i'm a little confused by what you mean, but i'm also slightly delirious because it's super hot here and i've barely had any sleep, so please forgive me if i get this entirely wrong, but i presume you're referring to issues with movement in the shot which then create a sudden 'choppy' jump from when you're going from last frame to first frame?
this is definitely an issue sometimes with shots and i can't say that i've come across a particularly successful way to counter it, and honestly, most people are quite accepting of 'it's a gif and they will jump to the beginning'. however, if it really is winding you up, the only thing i have tried in the past is to try and readjust the positioning of the original frames. this can be complex, time consuming, and doesn't always work, so it's really not a 'fool proof' method, but essentially what you do is move each frame so that the positioning of the person/objects is kept more central. it's like doing frame by frame colouring, except you're literally frame by frame adjusting the shot to 'counteract' the shaky camera. it's a lot of work, and you have to be super careful and keep going back to the previous frame to make sure that it's running smoothly and you're not making a shot look even shakier. in short, i don't really know if it's worth it and honestly, i rarely resort to it. i will say that i think we as gifmakers have a tendency so overthink our work and panic over things not looking as we envisioned, like camera cuts, while most other people wouldn't even notice let alone find it a big deal.

get to know me!
anna @keerysquinn filled this in and i was thinking about my own answers and realised they go on for ages so i figured if y'all ever wanted a super lore drop about me. here it is!
since my answers are so long, i'm not going to tag anyone, but if you also get inspired to answer, i'm more than happy to learn about people so you can tag me in as the reason you want to answer these!
(under the cut bc of how long it gets lol)
Name(real or alias): rj. letter r, letter j. (i have to spell it out especially when i'm in america bc people think i'm saying audrey) it's an abbreviation of my given name, which considering it's common knowledge that i'm afab, it's probably pretty easy to guess? but i don't want anyone calling me anything other than rj, or ridge
ridge comes from the sounds 'ruh' and 'juh' being said real quickly in succession. my friend jamie once sent me an ask on my old blog forever ago that started with 'hey ridge' and i fell in love with it, but something feels weirdly overfamiliar when people call me it who i'm not mutuals with?? anyway, that's why my user tag is userridge, bc it wasn't being used and it is a legit nickname of mine i've had for years
Age: [schmidt from new girl voice] TWENNY-NOINE
Country you live in: england (derogatory). the oldies at the care home i work at (not for much longer!!) always assume that bc i visit my friends in america so often, i'm planning on moving there, but tbh as much as i'd love to not be an ocean away from the people i love most, domestic day-to-day life in america isn't worth the move. i'd rather sensationalise the one or two trips i get to wal-mart every year, lol
Fandoms: the only fandom i actively participate in, in terms of consuming regular fanart, fanfiction, character analysis, gifmaking and shipping, is stranger things. i have a lot of other interests in other media that i love to consume, but i don't necessarily feel any particular urge to take part in most, if any, parts of fandom culture within those interests like i do with stranger things and other projects affiliated with its actors
Why are you on tumblr (writer or reader or both): i've gone from being strictly a stranger things reader insert writer, to an all-characters-played-by-the-joes reader insert writer, to a sometimes reader insert writer but not for stranger things, sometimes pairing writer but only for stranger things rarepairs, and also now gifmaker!
Favorite thing about yourself: i can take care of people, and i'm good at it. i can make people feel better, and i can stand up for them when it's needed
Something you think you are known for: being the co-captain of cheerscoops, and The Ralph Mutual (which is a kind way of saying the mutual mentally unwell enough to write a six-figure word count about a character with six minutes of screentime)
Who are you in a friend group(partier, mom, talkative, etc): lol what's a friend group? i kid, i kid. i don't really have any irl friend "groups" anymore, but even back when i did, i was more of a gap filler. like, i wasn't one of the first people invited to things, but then later on if someone dropped out or if the group realised more people could come, then i'd be offered
in online groups, i like to think i'm someone who makes people laugh? i'm definitely the indecisive one who needs to crowdsource every choice put in front of me, but that's what you get when you befriend a nonbinary bisexual lol. i also like to bounce ideas back and forth with people, though admittedly despite how often i do it, i do also hold myself back from it a lot bc i don't want people to think i'm taking their idea and running with it
Who do you love the most: keep this clip in mind as you read the next part of this sentence: ask me that again and look at my url. i haven't felt such a (distantly) parasocial connection towards (not with, there's a difference) any celebrity in a long time that i do with the joes. like, i don't want to know anything about their personal lives in the slightest, but i'm always excited to see what they're doing next, in a way i'm not necessarily about anybody else
What brought you to tumblr in the first place: this blog started out because @denim-mixtapes and i, who met through our former blogs dedicated to A Fandom We Don't Talk About Any More, were yelling about eddie munson via snapchat, discord, instagram, our public twitter accounts and our private ones, tiktok, maybe more? and then @fanatictypist, also a friend from AFWDTAAM and deep in the brainrot but never having taken the break from tumblr that mandy and i did, suggested taking our ideas to tumblr bc this was july 2022 when hype was INSANELY real
before that, i made a blog specifically for AFWDTAAM because a) i missed the fandom blog i'd had before that which i had previously deactivated, and b) i realised there was reader insert fanfiction for said fandom, but not enough featuring the person that i liked the most, so i started writing. i'd never written x reader before then.
before that, as i said, i had a fandom blog. it was the one i used to join rp groups on tumblr, which was fun until it wasn't. and i realised that i was going through a cycle of finding a new group, enjoying their company, having major drama ensue, and eventually instead of just moving to another rp group to see the same thing happen over n over again, i just deactivated entirely. i miss rp-ing, but also i wouldn't go back to it at the age of 29
Is there something you regret doing: i have a lot of things that i have learned from, and i regret the fact that actions i've made have hurt people, always inadvertently, but still. i wish that the things that helped me to grow weren't at the expense of other people feeling bad about something in regard to me, but i don't think that constitutes regret.
being autistic, a lot of the time, people seem to just drop me out of seemingly nowhere. and my irl bestie does tell me that a lot of the people i end up befriending, are people she gets a bad vibe from or doesn't really trust, and they're always the ones who don't stick around. but i do feel as though i must be accountable, too, and i know and understand that nobody owes me an explanation if i have done something that warrants them no longer wanting me in their life, but also, how do i know what i need to do to salvage important relationships to me if they don't think it important enough to tell me? that's why i'm a big advocate that your friends should not be your 100% hype men. if they are, i don't trust them. i need people to call me out on my shit and tell me if i'm doing something wrong, or going too far. and i need to feel like i can do the same with them, without them getting offended. it's for both of our benefits
Top five songs: ugh okay each of these has a v significant meaning so here goes
fool - djo: as previously mentioned, am autistic. i got myself diagnosed at 20, and everything suddenly made sense. my mum refused to accept it, told me that everybody's a little on the spectrum, that i only think i am bc i've looked it up and aligned myself with the traits. i learned at 28 that actually, i've had a diagnosis since i was 4. mum just never ever did anything to help me. not when i was going through school wanting to **** ****** bc i knew i was the "weird kid" but i didn't know what made me so weird that everyone ganged up on me so i didn't know how to fix it. turns out i couldn't. i could have gotten more support, but i didn't. and even now that they know i know about the og diagnosis, my parents refuse to acknowledge it. for years, they would scold and bully me away from behaviours that were actually just me stimming, and merely existing as an autistic kid. so i have to put on a persona for them, i have to be their "fool" to appease them rather than just getting to be my authentic, autistic self like i can be around my friends
consequences - lovejoy: going back to the earlier not-quite-regret-but-definitely-Something feeling of knowing that someday friendships and relationships will almost certainly be doomed. this sing encapsulates that for me a lot
car lights - james marriott: the queer anthem of all time. m+d have always said that they "don't care" who i bring home but whenever they talk about me having a future they talk about a husband, or a potential father of my children (which idek if i want) even though i've had relationships with women. it again feels part of something i have to hide from them
soft - motionless in white: a new contender thanks to kai and acey. i've always been the "wholesome" one, i've never really felt rage specifically, or had an outlet for it, but being a lifelong people pleaser and having something to inspire me to work on giving less of a shit what other people are thinking/saying about me has been a game changer for the ol self-esteem
undertale - toby fox: i can't explain this one. it just makes me cry every time i listen to it. like, weep actual tears. every time.
If you could go anywhere where would you go: i've always wanted to go to japan, but i also don't like going to countries where english is not a first language without having a basic understanding of the mother tongue of that country and japanese is fuckin difficult to learn. i've also always wanted to go to australia, even before anyone in particular came into my life tyvm
What is your hobby: fanfic writing, gif making, video game playing. procrastinating is a hobby at this point, lol. i like to try craft things, but i'm not very good at keeping up with them
Any tv shows you watching: i'm rewatching stranger things bc gifmaking has ruined my perception of the actual timeline of events. i'm actively watching the afterparty s2 and only murders in the building s3. it's not really a tv show, but i watch it on my tv, dimension 20's current campaign, mentopolis, is also something i'm actively keeping up with, on top of all actively releasing dropout content
What movie did you last watch: the last movies i put on were the mamma mia films, as background while i wrote, and ever since i've been slowly cooking a mamma mia stranger things au bc i'm basically incapable of consuming any media without relating it to stranger things at this point. i can relate each of the 3 canon characters to eddie, steve and jonathan, but i can't shake the idea that like. what if argyle was one of the potential dads. it wouldn't be a direct parody bc he's so different from any other character in the mamma mia franchise but i think it would be so fun to include him, too
Last thing you read(book, fanfic, etc): i'm reading rebel robin, atm, bc idk why i never really thought to indulge in the stranger things books before now? i used to read doctor who books so it's not like i'm a stranger to consuming media outside of its original format. i'm also currently reading through @pearlypairings' photocheer fic there is a light that never goes out!
Last text message you got: HAHAHA this one's funny. my sister's getting married next month and she's asking if we've all paid for our parts, I told her I'd paid it and her fiance told me they'd receievd it (he's an accountant so he's dealing with the money side of things) but my sister couldn't spot anything from me even though i told her what her fiance had told me, so my last text from her is "unless he's financially gaslighting me, or he's tucked it away in his fuck-off fund" (which i should establish is a joke bc he is 1000% not like that in the slightest)
Last text message you sent: sending to my sister, above: "or he's gaslighting me into believing i've sent it when it didn't go through, classic Dishonest [fiance name redacted]!" (again, all a joke)
Any pets: none atm :( i still live with my parents who have never wanted any of us to have pets, but now that my older sister has her dog, jasper, my family are obsessed with him. i mean, they have a photo of him in our living room that's bigger than any photo of any of us kids

Hi! Just wanted to send an ask to say thank you for all you do, I really respect what you do for the fandom and the hours you give to us. From one gifmaker to another, your output is completely incredible, especially at the high quality you achieve. Do you have a lot of Actions to speed up the process? For me a gifset takes about 30min to an 2hr from start to finish depending on complexity of post-processing, so I can't imagine doing what you do! I assume the show lighting being fairly consistent for runway vs werkroom helps with presets, or is it still very manual?
Hey!! Aw thank you so much! it's always nice to speak to a fellow gifmaker! ā£ļø(especially if you gif drag race because i feel like the people who do have dwindled over the years!) I actually don't really use actions.. or at all really lol (if you think itd help/speed up the process do let me know!) i use smart sharpen with pretty much the same settings every time so that definitely helps! But yes for me it's about the same, 30 min to 2hr depending on the post (unless its a more complex compilation.. those have taken me 5+ hrs in the past š
) . but thankfully with US drag race the runway lighting is pretty consistent so most of the time its pretty easy to colour, sometimes i can copy my psd from the 1st set almost exactly and get sets done in 20-25 mins šš»the werkroom colouring is definitely more manual; i make a couple of base PSDs each season but it literally changes depending on the angle of the werkroom lol especially in untucked (when i giffed bosco in untucked every week sometimes i'd have like 4-5 different sets of colouring for one set lol šbut worth it in the end!) but yeah for US seasons its not too difficult to gif so i can get sets done a lot quicker! the international seasons often have pretty bad/crazy lighting so that usually requires a lot more colouring and time to correct everything lol
#ask#anon#edit: i also don't know where to find/how to make actions which is mainly why i dont use them š

hello, I love ur mcl gifsets!!! they're always so bright and colorful you'd never be able to tell how potato quality the actual source video is šš do u have any tips for a newbie gifmaker?
ah thank you anon that is so kind of you!!! i'm not sure how helpful this reply will be but i can do my best to quickly summarize my process :)
source quality definitely makes a huge difference because sometimes there's not much you can do and i accept that i'm about to make a fugly gif... but when i'm screenrecording f1tv i just set the quality to the highest possible and pray for the best š
idk what software you use for gifs but i use vapoursynth and it makes my life a lot easier! i actually do bm3d instead of knlm for denoise because i used to always get errors with the latter and gave up but i think most people use that š either way you can just play around with the numbers until you get what you like and then i usually have finesharp set to 0.5-0.7 :) plus sometimes if i feel like the sharpening isn't right i'll duplicate in ps and sharpen again just a little bit (smart sharpen at like 50-100% 0.3px and then lower the opacity as well)
after that it's just a matter of coloring so i'll put thoughts under the cut to not make this the longest post ever LOL
i think everyone has their own unique coloring process but i mainly use brightness+contrast and curves at the start to set my base because usually i find that the source isn't bright enough, of course this is all very intuitive but if i feel like the ~middle values~ of the gif need to be lightened then i'll fix that with curves and it'll help even out the colors a bit. i'm sure other people can give you better technical tips but my logic is basically that Fewer Colors -> Better Quality since it gives photoshop less to accommodate, so a big thing for me is introducing enough contrast by making the blacks/dark values dark enough so that you don't get a lot of greyish looking values when you export your gif T__T
afterward i usually just do a lot of selective color, some color balance, and some vibrance/saturation! i don't really touch exposure usually because i like the lighter values to be more ~balanced~, so i don't think you need to go wild with your colors but with selective color i usually up the blacks by like 5-15, and then just as a personal preference i like when my whites have less of a yellow tint and my reds are brighter so i'll remove some cyan from there as well. but this changes every time i color so it's really whatever feels right to you!
sorry for this very long reply but i also almost always export with selective diffusion because it works best for me, although i know some people have very fancy gifmaking processes and can make beautiful noise gifs but i've never quite figured that out T__T my process is pretty simple but i just do what works for me! and i try not to Overcolor when i can... here's an example where i do my best to maintain the skin tone as much as possible with just a bit of brightness and vibrance introduced:
alsooo for mclaren gifs specifically i find that i often need to adjust the yellows in selective color and bring back some magenta because curves/brightness will turn the mclaren orange into a really bright yellow color so i need to rebalance it. but otherwise that's about it!!! i have nooo clue whether this will help at all but best of luck with your giffing adventures and if you have any other questions feel free to lmk :D <3
#also last thing is that i hate seeing the f1tv logo in my gifs so i either crop it out or color over it... but it's all a balancing act#since you don't want to resize the gif Too Much when you're cropping so i just do the best i can!!#ask

Hey there, Jamie! First I gotta say that I love all your sets and Iām really glad youāre giffing again. ā¤ļø Then Iād ask something: Iām someone who likes to gif unpopular shows/movies and itās obviously really discouraging when I feel like I have no one to share my creations with. Have you ever felt like this? And since tumblr hasnāt been helping us gifmakers and even popular stuff (unless theyāre popular *this* week) donāt make notes/donāt get to the people who would actually enjoy seeing our creations, what do you think I could use as motivation to keep on doing it? I know itās kind of a dumb question but I LOVE the process of creating the sets, and then I post and feel this overwhelming drop of my energy, like: see? Itās worthless, what you do. And it always gets me in the endā¦ :( sorry for being dramatic about it, I just thought youād be the right person to ask because youāre such a lovely person to your anons :,) anyway, Iām wishing you a good time while giffing and nice days ahead! Xxx š
hi anon!! first off, i don't think you're being dramatic at all!! no matter how much i love giffing - and i really do love it - it is still so discouraging to post a set you're proud of and then get pretty much no notes. gifmaking is art! i know it feels so impostor-y to say it, but it's true! it is an art! and when you make art and share it with the world, you want it to be appreciated! i don't think there's anything dramatic or wrong with that. i feel like that a lot, honestly. i'm making a gifset as we speak that i know is gonna get like 30 notes, maximum. and it makes me sad because i'm putting a lot of work into it and it's going to look pretty and that isn't going to make a single difference in how popular it ends up being.
i don't think that's a dumb question at all. i am going to tell you something so arrogant and self-obsessed that pretty much everyone who sees this is going to laugh at me for the rest of my life: my main motivation for giffing at this point is literally just seeing pretty stuff on my blog. every time i finish a set, i go look at it on my blog and think, "wow, this looks lovely on my blog!" the more time i spend on tumblr, the more i think of my blog as a scrapbook of the things i love, and when i make a gifset, it's another addition to that scrapbook. and i love being able to go back and look at a gifset i made and think "wow, i made something beautiful for something that i really enjoy!" and sure, i'll still get a bit bummed about the note count (a set i posted a few days ago literally only has 5 notes right now), but i still get to have it on my blog and i still think it's beautiful.
you mentioned that you love the process of making your gifs. i'm glad! that is the thing you have really gotta hold onto. even if your audience is limited, this is your art. this is something that you made, because you love it. you have really gotta let that fuel you, because unfortunately for all artists, public opinion changes with the wind and validation comes and goes quicker than anything else. i hate it. i hate it for me and for you and for every other artist just trying to put their work out there. but we have really gotta let our own love of creating be the thing that motivates us.
i'm glad you came to me to ask this question, anon. i hope i helped a little bit ā” also for the record you can always tag me in your creations, even if i'm not in the fandom or if we aren't mutuals! i would love to see & appreciate your work ā” and if you don't think your creations are reaching an audience that is out there, my #1 tip to you is this: join or start a sourceblog! i have a bit of a problem when it comes to starting sourceblogs (as you may have noticed) but it actually really does help. it also motivates me more knowing that there is an audience out there and i can reach more of them with a sourceblog. it's definitely not for everyone but if you're interested, i say go for it!
if you wanna talk more or have more questions for me, my askbox and dms are always open!! sending you lots of love and i hope you have a wonderful day/evening ā”

Iām not trying to sound rude or entitled but how come yours and others amazing Klaine/Kurt/Blaine sets do poorly in terms of notes but others gifsets of Brittany or Santana or both do better when I thought Klaine was more popular? Itās sad to see you not get recognized, even if notes donāt matter much I still think you guys deserve more.
Ooh, this is definitely an interesting question. Thank you so much for being sweet about it!! I'm defo not the best gifmaker on here lol. Sometimes I think I get no notes just because my sets are ugly after a few weeks. But I'm really glad you enjoy them!!!
I wanna start by saying that, y'know, notes really don't matter. Especially making Glee content lmao. You can really get yourself tied up in knots about that stuff. Hell, I still do.
But I've definitely thought about this a lot, and I think there's two groups to consider here: dedicated gleeks and general tumblr users.
So, first up, dedicated gleeks.
Now, considering recent polls and stuff, it's clear Kurt and Blaine are the most popular within the dedicated group of people who put time and effort into Glee on here. But I can't help but feel like there's a bit of a divide in terms of Klaine fandom. I'm 21, and obviously didn't watch Glee when it was on, and I feel like sometimes my sets don't make it into the group of Klaine shippers over 30. No hate to those people, by the way! I think a lot of them don't really know we're here, or keep to their groups. But there's definitely a different level of engagement from those people, just because they experience fandom a little differently to how I do.
And the second group, general tumblr users.
Opposed to that, I think there's more general goodwill towards Brittana right now, probably because since Naya died, a lot of people have rediscovered and are really connecting to Santana again. Even if those people aren't actively contributing to the glee bubble, they seem pretty willing to share Santana/Brittana stuff. I've spoken to some other people sometimes about the concept of a gifset "breaking containment", and it definitely feels more likely for Brittana sets to do that. I can't help but think a lot of people who look back at Glee/their Glee days as cringe view Klaine/Kurt/Blaine as a big part of that. There's also a few ideas I have about how generally, people don't understand Kurt in particular and misread him as being a homophobic stereotype of a character.
But those are my thoughts. Obviously they work in conjunction. There's also the general gifmaking problems that plague us all, and that's the unfortunate fact that artistic gifsets never seem to do as well as sets that are literally just scenes (which are obviously beautiful and take time too).
And obviously, I'm preaching to the choir a bit here, but please, if you see a set you like - share it, like it, reblog it, compliment it! Hell, even just send it to me if I've not seen it yet. That's the joy of fandom on here!
#ask box#glee fandom#glee#I really hope this doesn't comes off as complaining!#just my pov as a creator#also feel free to share this post idc

It's been 8 months and I still haven't been able to get back into editing, so annoyed with myself. I really want to get back into it, but whenever I open photoshop I just sit there even with ideas. I have a couple of ideas but they are parallel text scenes or just text scenes and no actual..I don't know what you call them exactly edits? haha. But yeah I find that most of my blog is just text scenes or just a scene coloured and up close, all the "same" and kinda boring, I guess? I don't know I'm just so stuck with myself and don't know how to get myself past it and make amazing work like you and everybody else, perhaps it's cause I can't picture things in my mind I have to actually see it first? Sorry this is totally random and out of nowhere just needed to rant lol
hey anon, i'm glad you felt comfortable sharing this with me <3
first things first: parallel & scene gifsets are not boring! people love those. the proof: they ALWAYS get more traction than creative gifs, without fail. every single time! they're absolutely edits anyway! coloring and sharpening scenes is not always easy, there's often a fair amount of work put into it.
i've also been lacking inspiration these past couple weeks/months, to be honest. i have a lot of ideas and even requests, but i've pretty much only done the scene gifs and parallels because it's all i can handle right now. that's all i felt like doing, so it's what i did. if it's what you're in the mood for, absolutely go for it. it could very will spark inspiration for more creative sets after some time, too!
it's really hard to picture something, even if you have ideas, when you're lacking inspiration. so i think if you're in the mood for basic gifs, then by all means make these basic gifs. it's still creating! and the inspiration will come back one day.
also who cares if it's "boring", if you like making them! gifmaking is an art form, whatever kind of gif you make, and you should indulge in whatever sparks ideas and inspiration, even if it's more basic stuff. we should always keep in mind that art is art even if it's basic and simple. basic and simple is valid and important too, and it doesn't mean you won't get back to more creative stuff eventually! good luck š„°

hi! do you mind sharing what steps you use to color your gifs? your colorings are always so nice
hi! since i've gotten quite a few people asking about this, i thought i'd do a full tutorial on it! š„° i'll go into two aspectsāhow i color gifs normally, for properly lit/neutrally colored scenes, and how i color when the scenes are unnaturally yellow/red/orange.
fair warning for a lot of images and me rambling way too much under the cut!
we'll start with how i color normally, i'll show you how to achieve something like this:
before we start, a couple of things to keep in mind:
i won't be going into the basics of gifmaking (screencaping, loading your frames in, sharpening, and all that). this is assuming you know the basics of giffing and have an idea of adjustment layers.
i use PS 2020, but you can do this in pretty much any version.
i always do all my editing with my gif converted into a smart object, but you can do this in frame animation too!
the way i'm coloring is quite specific to the way 911 is lit, and while this should work with any other show that has similar lighting, you can't use the same principles for shows that are washed out or have weird filters or really dark lighting.
so, i start off by brightening up my gif. i add an exposure and levels layer for this purpose:
this gives it sufficient brightness, but doesn't adjust it drastically the way some gifmakers like to do. the brightness usually isn't my focus, i'll adjust it if i need to, but i prefer to focus on color correction/enhancement, and so on. this is what my gif looks like now:
i like my gifs to have a LOT of contrast to reduce pixellation and because i think it gives it more clarity and crispness. i also like to them to be vibrant, but not in a way that makes the skin tones of the characters look unnatural. so i start off with adding a selective color layer with the blacks increased, for contrast (i know people usually use levels or curves, but i really prefer selective color in this instance) and a color balance layer to make the hue and tones of the gif cooler.
this is what i end up with:
of course, buck's skin looks way too unnatural. we'll fix this in selective colorāi use a LOT of selective color layers just for the skin tone of the characters. i used at least 4 for this gif alone. the majority of your coloring process can take place there, if you're not going for anything fancy.
i'll share the settings i used, but keep in mind this is very subjective to each gif and scene. even if the scenes are very similar, you'll definitely have to make at least some adjustments.
i also added selective color to brighten majentas (for buck's lips and cheeks) and blues (for the background behind him). since there are only a handful of major colors in this scene, i didn't have to do much. but if there were green, yellow and other cooler colors, i would be working on making them look as vibrant as possible.
this was my result:
i decided i wanted my gif to look a little brighter, after all, and i used a brightness/contrast layer. i also decided to darken the reds a tad bit more, and highlight the whites, like so:
to complete it, i added a grey to white gradient map at about 22% opacity, set to soft light, to add a little more contrast. this step is optional, unless you're a stickler like me for the greys and blacks to be darkened lmao.
the finished product:
next, let's move on to color correcting!
there are a lot of layers you can use to color correct, and i'll be using channel mixer for the purposes of the tutorial. it's not too complicatedābut in case you want a more detailed explanation into how it works, this tutorial is perfect!
so, this is the scene we'll be working with. 911 has good lighting compared to a lot of shows, but there are a lot of scenesāespecially in s1 and in the characters' housesāthat are washed way too yellow or red. the characters of color, unfortunately, seem to get the brunt of it. so i'll be showing you how to color correct, while staying true to their skin tones!
this is the gif without any coloring at all:
before brightening the gif, i'm gonna add a channel mixer layer. i'll go straight to the blue channel, and increase the red and green channels slightly.
this is what the gif looks like:
it looks better, but her skin is too majenta. we'll fix this with another channel mixer layer, this time in the red channel. reduce the red slider slightly, like so:
she looks better now! still a little too red, but our next steps will fix that. next, brighten up the gif and add contrast like normal:
of course, now she looks waay too pale. we'll fix this using vibrance:
better, but it's not close enough to her original skin tone for my liking. let's use selective color. i adjusted the reds:
i also adjusted the yellows, greens, cyans and blues; to make the other colors more vibrant. this is the finished gif:
if you want the gif to look brighterāi'm aware that the way i've done it gives it minimal brightnessāyou can add a brightness contrast layer, while upping both the brightness and contrast sliders. this should brighten up your gif, while keeping hen's skin tone as dark as it should be.
i really hope this tutorial helps! š let me know if you have any questions!

tutorial below the cut!
How to fix orange-washed characters
recently Iāve been seeing a lot of this
and not enough of this
and I get it, I really do.
Making vibrantly coloured gifs with black and brown actors can sometimes present unique challenges, doubly so when the source material is lit with a candle one scene and with disco lights the next.
A lot of the time, in an effort to avoid whitewashing actors, gifmakers will instead (accidentally) over-saturate them and end up with orange-washed actors.
so I thought Iād share two quick methods I learned while giffing Lovecraft Country (aka a show with a black cast varying in shades, and with the most random and worst lighting Iāve ever had the pleasure of giffing)
Theyāre both super simple and can be used almost universally (together or individually) to tone down the orange hue when making vibrantly coloured gifs.
Method 1: using the Hue/Saturation adjustment layer
This is my go-to adjustment.
Iāve gone ahead and made my gif, sharpened and put some basic colouring on there (my usual mix is curves-selective color-hue/saturation).
This is what Iām left with:
You can see that he looks way more orange that he should
what I do than is go in with my hue/saturation layer and isolate the Reds. I lower the saturation down (in this case all the way to -30) and sometimes I even fiddle with the lightness (just to keep the gifs true to skintone).
If their features become a little washed out in terms of colour, instead of upping the red again or the overall saturation, I like to use a vibrance layer. It doesnāt add colour so much as it makes it pop a little bit more.
So my coloured gif, with these settings:
gets you this:
and hereās a side by side with no adjustment layers:
another example: (without the adjustment on the left, and with on the right)
I know there will be scenarios in which your actor is in a very red scene and lowering the red saturation can affect the entire gif. In those cases I like to use layer masks and a soft brush to only remove the reds from skin (instead of the entire gif).
And if it doesnāt work, then it doesnāt work. I think especially when itās clear that the scene is incredibly red, people will be more understanding and at the end of the day, itās up to you to decide what looks best!
Method 2: using the Selective Colour adjustment layer
I like using this method for more subtle cases; where the colouring looks alright but adding a selective colour layer to it will just push it that last bit to looking Great.
Take this gif, for example:
Itās pretty good but look what happens when I add a selective colour layer with these values:
Itās a minor change but it looks much more true to the actorās skin colour.
So there you have it. The quick and easy way to make sure you donāt make your actors look orange! Be sure to play around with the settings to see what suits your gif the best, since no two actors are the same, and more than anything be sure to have fun!
