do you feel like 'Question...?' is super queer only as it relates to Taylor or as a standalone song? And if you feel it's super queer as a standalone song, can you explain why please?
Good question… (hee) this is probably (definitely) gonna be a much longer answer than you were looking for anon but I have a lot of thoughts!!!!
So I do think for me the song reads as queer without relating it to Taylor at all!
The first lyrics that point me towards a queer reading of the song are:
“I swear that it was something
'Cause I don't remember who I was before you
Painted all my nights
A color I've searched for since”
All of these lines for me read very much about a queer relationship!
‘I swear that is was something’ makes me think of a relationship that either wasn’t seen a ‘really something’ to outsiders (I think this interpretation is backed up in later lyrics!) or that had to be kept secret and so now the narrator has to affirm to themselves that this was something important and real!
Then the narrator goes on to say ‘cause I don’t remember who I was before you painted all my nights a color I’ve searched for since’.
The narrator was transformed so much by this relationship that they don’t remember who they were before they met this person and had this relationship! This to me reads as a first queer relationship or the relationship that cemented queerness in the identity of the narrator. They can’t go back to who they were before!
‘you painted all my nights a color I’ve searched for since’ could be my favourite lyric from the whole song because I think it says so much and paints such an evocative imagery. There is a lot going on in this one line! The first thing that jumps out to me is ‘nights’ rather than days, again to me that paints the picture of a relationship that had to be kept quite literally in the dark.
And then the imagery of those nights being painted this specific colour that the narrator has been searching for since. To me this evokes imagery of films like Wizard of Oz where the film transitions from black and white to colour. The narrators world was in black and white/monotone grey and then this relationship came along and painted their world technicolour and now the narrator is desperately searching for anything to make their world technicolour again!!!
Moving on to the chorus, the first thing about the chorus that reads queer to me is the chorus being based around the word question. This evokes the idea of questioning both the subject of the song but also underneath it all the narrator is questioning themselves, questioning if their memory of how this relationship unfolded is in line with reality.
“Can I ask you a question?
Did you ever have someone kiss you in a crowded room
And every single one of your friends was
Making fun of you
But 15 seconds later they were clapping too?
Then what did you do?”
The imagery this part of the chorus creates honestly feels so close to the bone for me as a queer person. ‘Can I ask you a question’ is such a loaded phrase anyway right? But within the context of all that comes before the chorus I can’t help but think of those conversations you have as a young queer person, where you are trying to figure out if the person in front of you (that you’re maybe crushing on) is accepting of your queerness or maybe even queer like you??
And on the flip side the stomach drop when you are closeted and someone drops their voice in a private conversation and says ‘can I ask you a question’ and you have to decide where to trust this person with something so delicate and new within yourself and you have to calculate your own safety all at the same time!
“Did you ever have someone kiss you in a crowded room”
So this line is telling us that it was the narrator that kissed the subject of the song in a crowded room right? It paints the narrator as perhaps the more confident or the one more willing to risk it all for the feeling of kissing their love in a crowded room? And why is that a big deal?
“And every single one of your friends was / Making fun of you”
Which the narrator answers in the following line! The subject’s friends response to the two kissing is to make fun of the subject! I imagine two people kissing and the crowd around them laughing and pointing. The imagery is hidden within a very upbeat chorus but it’s devastating! And unfortunately I think a lot of queer people can relate to this experience, of their love being a joke to outsiders (perhaps especially queer women?)
“But 15 seconds later they were clapping too?“
I think there are two ways to interpret this line. The first being the literal, that 15 seconds after the kiss began the crowd switched from making fun of the subject to clapping and cheering them on. If you actually think of what it would be like to be kissing in a crowded room being laughed at for 15 seconds that 15 seconds becomes an excruciatingly long time.
So if we take the line less literally, I think the idea being put forward is that when this couple first got together the subjects friends made fun of the relationship, and then after a long time they came around and were supportive. But it seems like the damage was done, to both the subject and the relationship.
“Then what did you do? / Did you leave her house in the middle of the night?” In the aftermath of the kiss in the crowded room (either metaphorical or literal) the subject leaves the narrator, in the dark, the place where they once shared, alone. But then we learn more about the split in the next line…
“Did you wish you'd put up more of a fight? / When she said it was too much?” So this implies the narrator said ‘it was too much’ and the subject didn’t fight her on it and then left. I personally interpret this to mean the narrator in the fallout of the kiss in a crowded room felt like the negative attention and mocking was too much to move past even if this people then came around. But really she wanted the subject to push back against that, and say it was worth the fight.
“Do you wish you could still touch ...her? / It's just a question” For me regardless of the rest of the reading I’ve always heard these lines as flirting, then trying to cover it up with the deflection of ‘it’s just a question.’
But I also interpret the pause between ‘touch’ and ‘her’ as both signalling queerness and like the narrator is almost about to say ‘me’ rather than ‘her’, but then stops herself, like she needs to keep the distance from the narrative by using she and her rather me I or me. Like she’s still not sure she’s ready to claim this story as something that happened to her.
Ok so this is already so long I’m just skip the next verse and go into the bridge, but let it be known I also have thoughts about the second verse!!!!
“Does it feel like everything's just like second-best after that / Meteor strike?” For me this is the narrator asking the subject if this relationship meant as much to them as it did to her. But she is also upping the stakes of the previous metaphor in the first verse.
In the verse all her nights were painted a colour she has searched for since, but here she is comparing the relationship to a meteor strike, something destructive and dangerous that literally changes the landscape around it. For me reading this as a queer song this feels like a metaphor for coming out.
“And what's that, that I heard, that you're still with her / That's nice, I'm sure that's what's suitable / And right”
What’s ‘suitable’ and ‘right’ feels very much like a way to say straight to me in like a kind of bitchy way (which I love)
“But tonight... Can I ask you a question?”
And then it comes right back to the question, the questioning!!!! Even after re-hashing the whole story the narrator still keeps coming back the moment everything fell apart.
Ok yeah so this got soooooooo long but I hope I answered your question…?

curious. what do you think would have *happened* if gaius actually died in 4x07 ^^
woof. now that's a question.
i really had to sit down and think about this question because there's both so much and so little that i can see his death affecting.
first of all, i want to say that the show is notoriously 'bad' at dealing with deaths. if gaius were to die in 04x07, i'm sure that the implications i'm about to discuss wouldn't actually be addressed - especially because i can't see them killing off gaius for any other reason than the actor wanting to leave the show. his death would be unnecessary, an emotion-pulling sacrifice at best. they would probably do one of two things: use his death as a way to bring more danger/betrayal into the show (something similar to 'a remedy to cure all ills') or simply replace one with another, essentially giving merlin someone similar to gaius. i'm personally more inclined to lean towards option one, though merlin would still need someone who knows his secret and that someone would need to have some sort of knowledge that could be helpful to merlin, as well as a similar quality to gaius - a way to question merlin's decisions. i think it would be…too on the nose to simply replace gaius and this being set at the second half of s4, i think merlin could be more than capable of doing most things he usually does without a physician on his side.
that sounds harsh, but know that i'm currently referring to the technicalities and not the emotional side of things. i think he'd be fine sneaking in and out and using his magic to heal if necessary etc etc. i also want to add that i cannot see merlin becoming the court physician either. i don't think it would really cross arthur's mind, and even if it did, i don't see merlin wanting that position. kid's got enough going on as it is. overall, there are quite a few different options as to how the show would deal with it, but it's neither here nor there. so let's move on to the actual implications of his death. the first thing to point out here is that merlin would absolutely blame himself. it could, potentially, drive a wedge between him and arthur, but at the end of the day, he would know gaius was only in that position due to morgana wanting to find emrys, and thus would have no real reason to blame arthur. however, this is where one of the bigger issues comes in - agravaine. at the end of 04x07, merlin and gaius have the little exchange about agravaine, merlin wanting to tell arthur, despite arthur having ignored his attempts earlier in the episode. not only would that exchange not happen, but merlin's emotions would be about 10 times more intense if he had lost gaius. now, that could drive a wedge between arthur and merlin, however, again, arthur has enough mind to understand the loss of a parental figure, and although he might dislike the accusation, i don't think any real harm would come from it. i also can't imagine merlin going after agravaine. admittedly, s4, especially the second half, shows merlin as a darker character, so the potential for some genuine rage is there, but i want to believe he'd act as his own voice of reason in that moment - all is not yet lost, and the memory of gaius would not be easily overshadowed.
again, as far as the show goes, i don't think the emotional aftermath would be as pronounced, but as i see it, merlin would, of course, struggle with it greatly. gaius was his one ally, his parental figure, someone who he protected and cared for immensely. and, just to highlight it once more, gaius was the voice of reason. he wasn't always right, but he often made merlin see the other side of things. so i think the simple answer here is that merlin's arc of becoming a 'darker' character would simply come to reach its climax much sooner. a loss such as this is about as heavy as they come.
another point i want to make is that merlin and arthur's relationship would change eventually. arthur does eventually find out agravaine was the one who betrayed him and would then know gaius wasn't the traitor. again, this is playing on the point that i don't actually think merlin would continue pressing the agravaine issue, despite gaius being labelled a traitor (although, this also depends on when in the episode gaius dies). arthur would feel powerful guilt, both for gaius himself and for merlin.
overall, i think gaius dying would, mostly, have an impact on the emotional side of things and not so much the actual main sequence of events. he's an important character in merlin's story, but he isn't a key person in the storyline itself. i want to believe merlin would find someone else to put his trust into (and i can't see it being arthur), even if it would only bring a fraction of that same back and forth him and gaius had. if not, again, he would perhaps make worse judgements, but he was never one to listen to gaius very often, especially later in the series. he'd put himself in more danger, and he'd have to battle a lot that he shared with gaius alone instead. merlin would run himself dry quicker than you could count to ten, and it would reflect in his character. he would no longer have the helping hand and that anchor to ground him. the very fundamentality of merlin would suffer greatly.

SOMNIAR
Somniar is an elven mage! he was born in the Mahariel clan, but when he was very young and began to show signs of magic, he was left behind in the Denerim Alienage because the clan had too many mages. He was briefly taken in by the Surana family, but a few years later the alienage gave him to the circle where he then grew up in its walls.
Surprisingly I have thought about his relationship with Jowan despite the fact that he's a bit one-off 💀 I think Somniar grew really attached to him and was basically his shadow for the first several years that he arrived there. when he realized he was trans, Jowan gave him all his hand-me-downs so he could wear the male robes because that was almost assuredly something he could not petition the templars for.
When Jowan escaped the circle, Somniar was blasé about being kicked out and conscripted. he found it better than the alternative (tranquility) and therefore went along with it just fine. He had deeply conflicting feelings about actually being a warden, having been raised by the circle to believe that he was uniquely prone to corruption, he worried that becoming tainted was something that would make him unclean or more susceptible to the thralls of evil magic. He didn't really cope with this fear until him and Alistair became truly isolated in their wardenhood after the massacre at Ostagar and he realized he had to be this way regardless, so there was little point in being emo about it.
At Ostagar, he reconnected with another new warden recruit from his birth clan named Sylric who belongs to an IRL friend of mine! Sylric is the one who gives Somniar his vallaslin and helps him reconnect with the Dalish :)
basic overview of his game choices:
• Romanced Alistair
• Travelling party is Leliana, Zevran, and Alistair
• Specializations are arcane warrior and spirit healer :)
1. Saved the circle and rejected the rite of annulment
2. Killed the demon, saved Connor, kept isolde alive, and vied for Jowan to not be executed
3. brokered peace between the Dalish and the werewolves, cured the curse
4. killed Branka, elected Bhelen
5. did not defile the ashes. obviously
6. Kept Alistair in the Wardens, elected Anora as queen, allowed Alistair to execute Loghain
7. asked Alistair very nicely to do the dark ritual
8. SURVIVED!!!!
His post canon is defined by being warden commander at Alistair's side until the events before DAI drove them in differing directions, physically, though as they intended to return to each other. However, in the events of DAI is left in the Fade, so that obviously can't really happen.
After the loss of his husband, Somniar takes a brief trek back to Ferelden with intent of invoking some kind of revenge on the inquisition but is stopped by Advisement of Leliana (who saw this coming)
After this, Somniar goes out on his lonesome and camps at various locations over, sleeping and exploring the Fade, and remains in this constant asleep state until he has a vivid and extremely depressing fade dream (which I have written about :) ) that brings him out of it. Afterwards, he heads to Antiva to travel with his closest friends, Zevran and Sylric <3
HAWKE
Honestly my hawke isn't very complex?? lore wise I think what the game presents is accurate, but im of the opinion that as he got older he became the black sheep of the family, exacerbated by Bethany dying. copes by humor and escapism but is constantly brought back down by The Neverending Agony
my Hawke's complexities are based on his relationships with the others and less on the events that besiege him though, I'd feel bad writing out an entire list of relationship Diagnostics so I will say that:
His most close-knit and authentic relationships are with Aveline, Varric, and Fenris, most complicated (but loving still) are Anders & Carver, and the rest of the companions being his close friends that don't really get to see his most personal side. Except Sebastian who is genuinely this man's arch nemesis.
Overview of my game choices:
• Romanced Anders
• Travelling party is Anders, Varric, and Fenris
• Specializations are Blood mage and spirit healer
• Purple personality mainly, w/ secondary blue :)
1. Carver became a grey warden
2. Duelled the Arishok to save Isabela
3. Helped anders compile the ingredients with pretty much no questions asked 💀
4. Sided with the mages. obviously.
Bonus, Legacy - 5. Sided with Larius to kill Corypheus
6. (DAI) Survived the fade
Post-Fade, Hawke meets up with Carver and Anders to ensure their safety before travelling back to Kirkwall. He is all too happy to tease Varric about being Viscount but gladly helped in furthering the rebuilding effort while thinly obscuring Anders continued existence
FIRUZ
my sweet Dalish mage. Firuz absolutely loved life with his Clan. He was extremely close and familiar with his Keeper above even his own parents, and was basically the clan babysitter. Because of his incredible patience and chaos management, the clan elected him to be the one to watch over the Divine Conclave, much to his dismay.
His vallaslin are of June, the elven God of craft, which fits him well :) despite his magic, Firuz always has a higher affinity for mending and crafting things the old fashioned way. while in Skyhold (less so in haven) he spends his free time crafting armor for his travelling companions and aiding in weapon crafting, which he is admittedly a little bit less good with. He absolutely adores Dalish leather and wood weaving but finds less time to commit to it while leading the inquisition :(
Game choices:
• Romanced Dorian
• Travelling party is Dorian, Cassandra, and Varric
• Specialization is rift mage :)
• War table missions mostly used Josephine and Lelianna
1. Allied with the mages
2. Left Alistair in the Fade :(
3. Kept the Wardens in Ferelden to rebuild
4. Brought Celene and Briala back together and had them rule Orlais as a duo (mostly)
5. Drank from the Well Of Sorrows (hence why his hair turned white 💀)
6. (Trespasser) vowed to stop Solas by any means necessary
7. (Trespasser) Disbands the inquisition
After the events of the main game, Firuz mostly spends his time hunting dragons and taking care of the remaining rifts around the south. He spends a lot of time recuperating from an absolute horror show of a hero's journey, and returning to passions he lost along the way. Firuz starts the game as quite overwhelmed and jumpy about his situation and by the end has mostly entered a state of numb depression. At no point does he take well to being the leader or the hope of the people.
In the few weeks before Trespasser where Dorian has returned to Tevinter "temporarily", Firuz takes as an opportunity to finally return to his Clan, at least for a brief visit. These few days really heal something in him, and give him a deceptively good feeling about the future, which is almost immediately destroyed by the events of Trespasser.
After losing his arm and his partner, he spends a lot of time running Jenny business with Sera, and travelling to visit his friends who have thus scattered to the wind. In particular, he makes good on Varric's offer to come visit in Kirkwall and spends many weeks there overseeing the rebuilding effort and spending time with Varric, Hawke and company. Alongside this, he stays with his Clan long term. Occasionally, he sneaks to Tevinter if permitted, but never for more than a few days. I'm so excited for what horrors DA:D will inflict upon his short-lived peace

hbomberguy’s latest video on plagiarism has made me completely rethink literature and writing. I have never once so much as considered intentionally plagiarizing anyone or anything, but I think there’s something more that has come out of this: the names of the people who created the works Somerton (and others) ripped off.
Plagiarism isn’t only bad because it is lazy and disrespectful, it’s bad because it buries the truth. If you can’t find a source, the conversation is over. Somerton’s sources are fairly easy to find by simply searching his plagiarized lines, but that isn’t true in most cases. Most of the time, the line from statement to source is a lot less clear.
Today, I was writing a report on English Ivy, which is an invasive species here in the US. I wanted to know when it was introduced and I at last found a source claiming it was introduced to the Americas “as early as 1727” on a .net website that seems quite reputable (it has multiple major universities credited in its home page), but there is no citation for where this date came from. I dug deeper and found a pamphlet created by a city government in Virginia that made the same claim, only to discover the first source linked in their bibliography. Another website (a botanical garden’s page) gave the same date with the same source hyperlinked. Of course, I have classes to attend and things to do and probably not enough time to follow the lines back to where this 1727 date came from, but if I had not just watched this video, I wouldn’t have given that date a second thought.
Of course, it doesn’t matter in the long run exactly what year hedera helix was introduced to the Americas, but it makes you wonder how many facts have been so vaguely attributed that it becomes completely impossible to figure out where they originated (and further, whether or not they’re true at all).
