Studio Ghibli has had me in a chokehold since I was kid watching Ponyo. I realized though that I’ve never actually watched all the movies, just marveled at their art styles lol.

this year I want to watch them all, I’ve already watched Howl’s Moving Castle and now tonight I’m watching Spirited Away. Very glad I randomly decided to watch HMC because I feel like Spirited Away has some things in it that are very familiar from HMC.

if anyone has an recommendations for movies I should watch that give Studio Ghibli vibes (or just good anime in general) let me know :D

GHIBLI-MOVIE-BASED TWST FAN SCHOOL!!

i actually tried designing a ghibli inspired fanschool when i first got into twst (four years ago... yeesh) but it never took off and i cant find any of that anymore so... I'M TRYING AGAIN!! i literally dont even have a school name yet but i'll add tidbits explaining my choices for the uniform under the cut! i'll tag this with the school name when i come up with it later edit 8/4: school name has been added in tags! edit 8/4 (again): school logo and first dorm have been added! edit 8/6: second dorm added!

im 1st going to explain my reasoning for the uniform design and then dive into my ideas for the school itself (dorms, atmosphere, location, etc) one of the biggest things i assosciate ghibli with is their nature + sky shots; such as these ones

so i wanted to include flora inside the design, hence the boa, laurel, and the little vine wrapping around the fem uniforms sock! adding onto that, i made the uniform a light blue striped with white to reference the skies. i also assosciate ghibli movies with peace, so the light blue adds onto that. the band on the arm is the same as nrc's; serves to show what dorm the student is in. the mage stone is located at the broach on the collar's bowtie. the gold around the gem is meant to look like a little flower!

moving onto the ideas i have abt the school...

going back the floral aspects of the uniform design, i think it'd be really cute and magical if they when they recieved the greenery (i'll refer to both the boa and laurel as 'greenery' collectively for simplicity sake) during their freshman year, there were no flowers yet. i think over time, as each student grows as a mage over their years at the school, flowers and plants bloom on the greenery to show their progress. maybe the flowers are specific to each student? i cant decided whether its instinct or they choose what flowers they want themselves

i feel like itd be fitting for the school to be located in a very secluded area. when i picture it in my head, the main building is smack dab in the middle of a flower-filled hillside that's right next to a forest... i'd like for it to be next to water too, but i'm not sure if the ocean would make sense geographically????? maybe it's just a big lake or waterfall inside the forest

i think the correct aesthetic for the school is 'romantic academia?' that's what pinterest is telling me anyway LOL. i think maybe the building is just shaped like a castle similar to nrc and rsa.. but then again i really like the idea of it being similar to Little Witch Academia's luna nova academy. we'll see

like nrc, i have seven dorms planned and theyre twisted from the most iconic ghibli films (according to google). in no particular order: howl's moving castle, princess mononoke, spirited away, ponyo, my neighbor totoro, kiki's delivery service, and castle in the sky. i might add or remove some of these! but theyre what i have for now. thats all i have for now, but feel free to give me any input/ideas (whether in the replies or my asks)! also if anybody wants to draw their oc in the uniform or anything i'd love to see it pls @ me...!!!!

Her paw coloration were orignally lovely maryjanes and socks but le-poofe made her barefoot and i love her interpretation of her lil feets so i kept it that way. dress shoes are often unnecessary uncomfortable. normalize barefoot in a sundress.

Rue once had a marine show up for a "surprise" inspection while they were unloading cargo. the fucking mission impossible stealth shenanigans her crew and herself had to pull to complete the deal XD. Now they do it during concert hours/when advertising so no one notices.

It's a pun that came up when making her, someone commented that she's "sweet as sugar" in opposite to my personality lmao. And I love a good roast.

Love fire elementals, will find a way to include in any universe. So i just made it that devil fruit users have a teeny tiny chance to inherit some of their ancestors abilities. tada!

That her cousins and siblings all went out adventuring. She hasn't heard from them since. She blames herself for not convincing them to stay and run the family tavern.

Finally establishing total neutrality in her establishment, it took a lot of work, but if people have beef, they take it outside.

I think she's focused a bit on the business, but I head-canon Crocodile meeting up and discovering you're never too old for a crush XD. He wins her over eventually.

Blackbeard, he's always starting shit.

Coming up with different mixed drinks/dishes to satisfy a variety of customers. If they don't mind the time it takes to make something "off the menu" she'll try to accommodate.

Fighting. Not that she's not powerful, she is, but she's very... imprecise. She'll set your ship on fire without meaning to if they get her angry enough.

Her flames are malleable, her hair can be literally sculpted into a variety of forms and styles.

She tried to throw someone out of her bar and chucked them into the sea from where her bar was. Like I said, she's very strong, but very imprecise. Luckily a few incidents like that (coupled with the fact that it was always the marines that started the fights, up until Blackbeard suddenly grew balls, but that was a while after) that they declared her bar and island neutral territory for the most part.

Absolutely, Crocodile takes forever to win her over.

Wren

She's based off the bird, and that bird is adorable with an adorable name. Also, she was originally going to be nonbinary, and wren is such a enby name, don't you think? So cute!

Tori tori no mis exist, and with bird devil fruits and shandians being a thing, I came up with a fun race similar to minks that view shandians like minks view humans. They think they're the same species ^w^

You'd think it'd be Kiki's Delivery Service, but it's actually Spirited Away.

Not leaving her island sooner, it took so long for her to work up the courage to chase her dreams.

Being hired by Big News Morgan, someone who works outside of the all the different complicated political systems of the world. Huge relief.

Anything new! She loves sampling local cuisine. Even if the taste or texture doesn't agree with her, she still values the experience.

I ship her with Jinbei, he's not likely to suggest they settle down, they both like to wander, and he probably has fantastic stories for her to document. Since his canonically preferred devil fruit is a tori tori no mi, he'd probably be fascinated by her wings. Two very different people loving their differences and similarities equally.

Enel and Blackbeard. Hears about Enel from Shandian cousins and is very very enraged. Blackbeard because she was picked up by the Whitebeard Pirates early on in her adventure when she got caught in a storm.

They are a extremely fast flyer, faster than any ship. She has a side hustle delivering packages and letters along the grand line.

Swimming, her wings are not waterproof, if they get too waterlogged they hurt she has a specific way of bathing, and communal baths were common on her island.

The way she fights, she can separate feathers from her wings and duplicate them and then shoot them at enemies. There's a limit on how many times she can do this, feathers take a while to regrow, but they are deadly when shot at the incredible high speeds she does. And she's very precise. Flying around at high speeds on the regular means she has very good vision.

Not learning proper navigation i.e. weather forecasting before starting out made her get caught in a hell of a storm. She got rescued by the Whitebeard Pirates after a "chase" which was really a misunderstanding on her part over their intentions. She was a very soggy miserable little thing that night. Her wings took ages to get dry and the feathers set straight enough to fly again.

She'd be very blushy, but yes!

I wanted to talk about the use of black in animated movies, specifically the difference between Disney and Studio Ghibli movies.

Disney Movies -

1.) The majority of the time, black is a universal color among villains in Disney movies; its practically a rule.  Black is either apart of their costume, hair, or body.  Along with this is a rather 2D personality/motivation.  These villains are rarely complex and don’t have redeeming traits that make an audience member sympathize with them. Their motives are plain and clear - money, power, youth, etc.  Their opposing protagonist never wears black (unless their hair is black, such as a POC or Snow White whose hair is a defining trait).  Black is an easy way to convey evil. Dark color = dark aura/essence = evil.  This is in no way bashing these movies; I love Disney movies more than most.  This use of black is just an easy way to convey an evil character.

Studio Ghibli -

Studio Ghibli movies are applauded for their complex characters and storylines. Their use of the color black is a perfect representation of this.

2&3.) Witch of the Waste from Howl’s Moving Castle - In the beginning of the film, this character falls into the typical villain archetype/trope.  However, over the course of the movie she loses the bit of youth and health she still had (from her magic).  By the end, she is her pure, raw self.  At moments, she retains her sense of superiority/ disregard for others, but she has many “cute old lady” moments (mostly in her relationship with the dog Heen).  Her black clothes go from conveying her “evilness” to her old age.

4.) No Face from Spirited Away - Studio Ghibli often uses black as a way to convey mystery and complexity.  No Face is a mysterious spirit with mysterious powers (he can shape-shift, create gold, eat pretty much anything, but he never speaks).  When first introduced, he is a nuisance and hazard to the bath house (at one point he ate someone).  But soon his soft character comes through.  He tags along on the protagonist’s journey, keeping her company in lonely and hopeless moments (he also endlessly offers her gold).  Growing up I always thought he was somewhat cute, like an old dog with little energy but endless love.  His black figure assists in his “mysteriousness.” He doesn’t have a definitive shape and he can disappear in dark spaces. I like this picture specifically because of his contrast with the scenery around him.  In class, many students agreed that black is a inconspicuous color.  However, in this setting, No Face’s black body clearly sticks out and draws the viewer’s attention.

5&6.) Gigi from Kiki’s Delivery Service - Gigi is Kiki’s adorable sidekick.  This movie already fights the typical stereotype of an evil witch, showing that witch’s are kind and helpful.  Gigi isn’t the typical black cat; he doesn’t bring bad luck and isn’t the pet of an evil villain.  He is a hilarious supporting character that brings Kiki’s naivety down to earth through comedic pessimism.  Also, the black makes his large eyes and mouth pop, making him a very cute cat :). Ghibli took the traditional mysterious black cat to create an adorable and funny character.

7.) Soot Sprites/Gremlins from My Neighbor Totoro and Spirited Away - Once again, black is used to make a cute and mysterious creature.  At first, these sprites surprise and “spook” the main characters in each movie.  But as the plot progresses, they become a cute companion.  In Spirited Away, the protagonist is scared by the swarm of these eerie bug-like creatures, but they soon prove to be ADORABLE; they carry and keep safe the protagonists shoes and socks, they work really hard carrying coal in the boiler room, they make cute little squeaky noises, and they LOVE sprinkles. I’m sorry, I just love these little guys.  In My Neighbor Totoro, the sprites are the protagonists’ first encounter with the mystical woods.  They are a precursor for their magical adventure.  Naturally, the sisters’ are initially scared by them.  The sprites’ black design is similar to that on Gigi; they appear mysterious, but their large white eyes make them very cute :)

8&9.) Lady Eboshi from Princess Mononoke - Princess Mononoke is famous for character complexity (among many other aspects of the film).  Lady Eboshi is initially seen as a villain; she is destroying the forest, angering forest spirits, causing discourse in the land, etc.  Her main goal is to kill the Forest Spirit (which is viewed as impossible by most as he is the highest god) to continue mining ore and expanding Iron Town. However, as the protagonist, Ashitaka, meets with and befriends her, she is seen as a kind-hearted and driven woman. She took in, helps, and hired outcast lepers and female brothel workers, giving them a home, family, and honest work.  The audience never dislikes her; she has a calm, kind demeanor and is very welcoming to Ashitaka. Her character design is the darkest of all the characters (at least all the human characters).  She is the only person with black hair, and her main outfit sticks out among the other towns people.  The use of black in her design contrasts her from the other characters (ie, Ashitaka is dressed in soft blues to portray his humble and kind nature).  She appears more powerful and mysterious among everyone else (Why does she have these goals? Where did she come from? What motivated her to help people less fortunate? How did she get in such a powerful position? etc.)

Roman’s Delivery Service - Chapter 1

Authors note: So i’ve had this idea of a 'Kiki's Delivery Service' au for a while and as im such a huge Studio Ghibli nerd i thought i’d make it anyways. It’s had a while in the making but i finally managed to finish it and i hope you like it as much as i do :) 

Summary: When a witch or wizard turns 13, on the night of a full moon they must leave home for a year in order to train in which ever skill they choose to persue. Roman is no different. At 13, he must go away with his black cat, Virgil, to train a year away from home as is customary to do so with his family’s and village’s traditions.

“-we’ve been receiving so many calls from people, asking about this marvellous airship called ‘The spirit of freedom’ which may or may not be passing over our area soon. I’ll let you know more as soon as we have more information available to us. But first, here’s the weather forecast; skies are clearing up, thanks to a high pressure front, moving in from the mountains. Mild winds will be blowing in from the west, pushing the clouds out by this evening. There will be a beautiful full moon lighting up the night sky, so if you’ve been planning something special, tonight might just be the night to do it. Tomorrow also looks good with more clear skies and sun-”

Roman switched off the portable radio with a ‘click’ and sat up from the lush grass he had been laying in previously, cloud gazing.

He stood up and brushed the grass which had gotten stuck to the back of his trousers off, bending backwards till his back cracked.

“Virgil! Wake up!” He said excitedly to the black fur ball who had curled up and was asleep, basking in the summer sun.

“Hmm?” The cat replied sleepily, only half awake.

The young boy then started to walk through the flowers of the meadow and back towards his house’s – making sure his black cat, Virgil, was following behind him. He could be a little sarcastic sometimes, well sometimes was an understatement, but Roman still loved him anyways.

“C’mon Virgil, let’s go tell mum and dad!” Roman shouted back to his cat as he started to race down the dirt path that lead home.

“Yeah, yeah, sure, just slow down already!” the dark fur ball shouted back. “Not all of us have long-ass legs like you!”

“Oh hush, let’s just go!” the young boy kept on running.

“Good afternoon, young Roman! Where are you off to today?” one of his neighbours called to him as they passed on their bike.

“Good afternoon, Mr Hamada! Just off home for now.” Roman slowed down ever so slightly and greeted him.

“Rightio, don’t let me be in your way now!” then he started to cycle on again.

“Have a good day sir!” Roman called and then continued running home, thoroughly tiring his cat out in the process.

“Slow down!” Virgil whined as he tried to keep up with the fast pace, but Roman paid no attention to his complaining, he was well used to it at this point in his life.

Soon enough, he could see the driveway of his house, the plants in the front garden coming into his view. He then picked up the pace only slightly, dodging and swerving in between all the pots and leaves. Once he got to his house, he went straight into their conservatory where his mum was busy making a potion for another one of his neighbours – an old lady he knew as Ms Flora.

She was a nice old lady, a neighbour he had known for as long as he could remember and she was also a regular customer of his mother.

“Hey mum-! Oh hi there Ms Flora,” Roman greeted the old lady when he saw she was there. “Hey mum, it’s gonna be a clear night tonight! And guess what?!” he continued, “The radio had said there is going to be a full moon too!” He finished a little too quickly, but that just showed his enthusiasm over it

“Did you go and borrow your father’s radio again without asking?” His mum scolded, raising an eyebrow as she concentrated on the potion she was making.

“Oh don’t worry, he doesn’t mind about that.” He waved off the concern and returned back to the topic he was talking about. “Please excuse me Ms Flora. Mum it’s going to be the perfect midnight to leave home! I can’t think of another night id want to, and it might not be like this again!” He half begged.

Roman’s mother was surprised, and momentarily paused in her potion making, but then continued as there was a timeframe she had to meet with the ingredients. Roman didn’t really understand why, but then again potions always seemed to bore him to no end.

“You mean tonight? Next month is what you told me!” She said, voicing her surprise as she mixed ingredients together.

“Yeaahhhhh, but the next full might well be on a cloudy night! And I want to leave on the perfect midnight! It is a special occasion after all!” The boy tried to reason, it made sense to him after all.

“Huh? But Roman-” said Roman had already to rush up to his room to start packing his back to be able to leave. “Wait!” She yelled after him, but little did she know her potion was beginning to bubble over and burn, and soon enough it exploded. Once the smoke cleared from around her, she could see that the glass tube had cracks down the side, and that the potion she was making had been ruined. She sighing, she started to go through and remake the potion again.

There was a chuckle from her guest who sat at a table in the room which had all sorts of different plants around it. “My oh my, what’s this all about hmm?” she laughed light-heartedly.

“It’s one of our oldest traditions, when a witch or wizard turns 13, they must leave home for a year in order to begin their training to become a witch or wizard.” She explained while making the new potion.

“Your little boy is 13 already? Goodness me how time flies.” Ms Flora smiled.

Roman’s mother agreed, “He seems so young to be leaving home now…”

Ms Flora sat back in her chair. “Well, I remember the very day you came to this town. A little girl flew down from the sky on a broomstick. And I was certain she was much too young to have such an important job as the President Witch.” They both chuckled.

Once she’d finished making the potion, Roman’s mum went and sat down across from Ms Flora with the potion.

“Yes, but at least I could actually fly, Roman barely knows how to do that! And every time I’ve tried to teach him how to make potions he gets too bored or I just never even have enough time to even teach him.” She said, worry hinted in her voice.

The old lady considered this for a moment and then spoke again. “Young people these days are all the same. They all want to do something different to what others want them to do. But I do hope at least that you get to teach him the potion that cures my Rheumatism.”

They both laughed at that and Roman’s mother was left with a tad less worry than she had before.

“Hurry up!” Roman rushed around his room, grabbing clothes out of draws, throwing them onto his bed and then shoving them in to his trusty red bag. “We had always said that we could leave on the perfect night, didn’t we?” He said to his cat as he sorted through a draw of socks.

“Nuh uh. Our plan was to stick around for another month and play it safe. I like that plan.” Virgil deadpanned and hopped aside to avoid his tail being trodden on by Roman as he ran around.

“And then if we put it off for a month and I find some wonderful boyfriend then what will we do?” Roman pulled shirts out of his chest of draws and without folding them very neatly, put in them into his bag, pushing them down to make them a little smaller.

“Uh oh…” Virgil said worriedly.

“Come on Virgil!” Roman then decided that unless he folded things then everything wouldn’t fit so he emptied the bag and then started rolling all his clothed up – a trick he learnt from his father to make clothes smaller.

“I’m going to put my paws together and pray you’re not serious about this princey.” The black cat had to dodge a shirt which was thrown his way, the boy deciding it wasn’t worth taking. Virgil didn’t blame him, neon orange wasn’t really Roman’s colour.

“Of course I am!” Roman replied a bit crossly and paused in his packing to look at his cat. “You very well know that ever since this prince has turned 13 I have been excited to make this trip.”

He swiftly finished off packing by taking his savings tin down from his bookcase and shoving it into the middle of his bag, so that it wouldn’t easily be lost. But then he remembered the prince outfit hanging up in his wardrobe and then folded that neatly, packing that too, he couldn’t leave it behind after all.

“There.” He said once he was happy with how things fitted. It was then that he heard a car pull into the driveway. “Dad!” He exclaimed and then ran over to the window, which, when he looked out, showed it was indeed his father who had pulled in.

Roman’s father looked very much like Roman, and Roman looked pretty much like his dad did when he was younger, except for the fact Roman had freckles, brown hair like his mother and he didn’t wear glasses.

“Dad! Guess what?!” He yelled out of the window. “I’ve decided that I’m going to leave tonight!”

His father was surprised to hear this, much like his mother, and paused in undoing the rope which was attached over the top of his car, keeping all sorts of different things in place.

“You’re going away tonight?!” he shouted up to Roman.

“Yeah! There’s gonna be a full moon tonight!” Roman called back.

“Well yeah, I guess so, but what happened to the camping trip we were supposed to take this weekend?” Roman’s dad managed to get the rope free from the top of the car. Pots, pans and other camping supplies were held atop the car. He sounded rather down about the fact that they may well not be able to go on the trip together as a family.

“Sorry dad!” Roman apologised and then went from the window back to his bag to check he had packed everything he needed.

“Oh, uh, Roman, wait-!” Being a tad distracted with talking to Roman, he didn’t notice the rope that was on the floor in front of him, so when he went to run inside, he tripped on said rope and then caused a lot of the equipment to come crashing off of the top of the car. He hesitated, looking back and forth between the house and the car trying to figure out what to what to do, but decided it would be best to at least sort out some of the things from the top of the car before he went inside.

Roman’s mother had finished up working on her potions and had gone up to Roman’s room. She had gone up to make sure all of Roman’s robes fit him correctly and to make sure the hem lines were right and fit right. His outfit was simple, a black shirt and trousers that matched. She had originally wanted Roman to wear what wizard’s usually wore, an outfit which was just one piece and was like a dress, but wasn’t a dress. Roman had protested against it and she ended up giving up on fighting him over it and they settled for a shirt and trousers. It wasn’t what she would have preferred but at least Roman was somewhat happy with it and it was traditional colours.

“Very handsome.” She remarked as she sewed up a hem on his right trouser leg.

Roman looked into the full length mirror they were in front of and frowned. “White would look better on me, or even my prince suit!”

“Listen, wizards and witches have worn this colour for a very long time Roman, you know that.” His mother reminded him.

“Oh but mum,” Roman continued, “I look really… dull.”

His mother finished and then stood up, putting her hands comfortingly on his shoulders as she grinned into the mirror. “It’s not really important what colour or style your clothes are dear, what matters is the heart inside.”

The boy smiled at this, “well I’m going to be the very best wizard that I can be mum! And I know that having a good heart is very important. But I do wish I could wear something different…”

His mother ignored the second half of his statement and replied, “Just follow your heart and keep smiling.”

Roman smiled at her in the mirror and agreed. “Yeah.”

“And be sure to write home as soon as you are settled.” She said as she packed up her sewing kit and proceeded downstairs from his room.

“Okay,” he called after her. When Roman saw his dad coming up the stairs he gasped and ran over to him. “Dad! Oh can I take the radio please?” he then proceeded to shout downstairs. “Mum, didn’t you say I could take the radio?” He looked over the banisters and saw his mother give him a nod as a yes. “Yay!”

His father chuckled. “Oh alright, it’s yours already!”

“Thank you!” Roman thanked him and smiled widely.

His father sat on his bed, he’d just come upstairs from calling all their family and friends to inform them of the date change of Roman’s leaving, they wanted people to be there for when he left after all.

“Well now,” he looked at Roman’s outfit. “You certainly look very grown up, Mr Wizard Prince.”

“Well I’m glad about that! One can’t be a prince if you don’t look grown up enough!” Roman beamed. “Hey dad, would you be able to lift me up high like you used to do when I was little?” he asked, holding his arms out.

“Well…” with a little struggle, Roman’s dad managed to pick him up and hold him up above him, spinning around a few times causing Roman to giggle, before dropping him back down, catching him and hugging him close while still carrying the boy.

“How come you never told me you were growing up so fast?” he murmured to Roman quietly. He then let Roman go from the hug but still held him. “You know, if this don’t work out, you can always come back home?”

Roman looked a tad taken back and smiled. “And come back a failure? No way!” he then made a face and stuck his tongue out, making both of them laugh.

“Will you write to us, if you have the time?” his dad asked him.

“Mhm,” Roman made a sound of agreement and then snuggled closer to his father. “I love you dad.”

They stayed like that for a little while longer before they had to double check Roman had got everything packed and then get ready for that evening. It was going to be a big event after all.

As the weather report had said, it was indeed a clear night, not a cloud was in sight and the full moon was up high in the sky. There were various groups of Roman’s friends, his parent’s friends, family members and neighbours gathered around outside of their house, ready to wave Roman a goodbye when he leaves.

Roman himself was joking around, or as some would say, having banter, with a group of his friends from the village.

“Ooh, so are you going to find a city by the ocean?” One friend asked him.

“Or maybe even a town?” Another added.

“Well, at least that’s what I’m hoping to do anyways!” Roman grinned, and his friends agreed on ‘how cool that would be’.

“Man I’m so jealous, you’re gonna have so much fun!” one of his friends remarked.

“I’m not going just for a good time though,” Roman stood up straight and held a finger up. “In order to become a good wizard, I have to train a whole year away from home.” He told them.

“Yeah, be sure to tell that to the boys,” his friend elbowed him in the ribs and the group all laughed. It was a well-known fact in the village that Roman had an attraction to boys, and they were all very accepting of it, those who weren’t were shunned however. It wasn’t really that big of a deal to anyone there, they just saw him for who Roman was and nothing else.

Their joking was cut short when Roman’s mother called him over, saying that it was time.

“Kay!” Roman waved to his friends, the broom he made earlier that day clutched in his grip as he ran over to his mother, who was also holding her broom.

“That’s going to be the broom you’re leaving on Roman?” she questioned, looking at his broom uncertainly.

“Yup! I made it all by myself this morning actually!” Roman said proudly, holding it out so she could see his handy work. His mother had other ideas however.

“Honey, that broom is too small to be truly safe, I’d much rather you took my broom instead, I know it better,” she insisted, not backing down.

“But mum that one’s so old! It’s pretty much ancient!” he protested.

“And that’s why it’s good!” his mum explained. “You can rely on it time after time and in any kind of weather too. Roman, do this for me please?”

“But I put so much effort into making this one,” He said, downcast. He then turned to Virgil, hoping for the cat to back him up. “Right Virgil?”

The cat paused from licking his paws from where he was seated on Roman’s shoulder. “Your broom is nice, but let’s take your mother’s.” He said flatly.

“Well you’re no help.” He pouted and glared at the black cat.

Ms Flora spoke up from where she was seated, “Now Roman, wouldn’t you be able to make yourself another fine broom once you’ve found a place and settled down?”

Roman sighed. “Yeah I guess so.”

Soon enough, it was time for Roman to leave. He went around and said goodbye to each of the guests there and hugged his friend’s goodbye.

“Be careful,” his mother told him as he hugged her.

“You be strong okay?” his father asked when Roman hugged him.

“I will!” Roman said to them as he made his way out into the middle of the clearing and then mounted his mother’s broomstick.

Flying took a lot of concentration for taking off and landing, so Roman had to focus. In not much time, the dust beneath him had spread around him and he levitated. This caused many cheers from the people around him, making him smile and become a little more confident.

“Oh dear,” Virgil muttered from where he was clinging on to Roman’s shoulder. “You know I hate flying,” but no one heard him say the second part as it was lost in the cheers.

The broom levitated off the ground for a few seconds before slowly falling back to the floor, much to Roman’s dislike. So, Roman did the only logical thing and gave the handle a good whack before he touched down again, which caused to broom to fly off rather suddenly upwards and then forward, making the crowd gasp. Roman hit a tree on his way out, making the little bells which were hung up there ring as he bounced back from that tree. Virgil, however, was screaming at Roman and could be heard well.

“VEER RIGHT! Go left go left go left-” Virgil yelled at him.

“Okay!” Roman yelled back and they hit another tree, making a sound of surprise, making more bells sound.

“Aim your broomstick…” Roman’s mother held her hands together and wished for Roman to be safe.

After a few seconds of nothing happening, Roman’s voice could be heard again.

“Farewell all of you! I’ll miss you!” He shouted and everyone sighed in relief.

“He’s okay,” one of Roman’s friends said thankfully.

“May our little prince be well and have a safe trip,” Roman’s dad said as he listened to the bells which kept sounding, the only sounds left from Roman’s exit. One of his neighbours said he would miss the sound of the bells.

And just like that, Roman flew off, away from home, under the stars in the clear night above him and the light of the moon guiding his way. But that was only the beginning of his trip, for there was a long time ahead of him, but for now he was happy and flying up high in the sky, excited for what adventures might come in the future.

Cutie Reviews: Doki Doki Oct 17

Okay cuties, this is my final October review. Thank goodness because I’m still really behind. It’s going on December and I didn’t even cover my November reviews yet.

I’m still sick btw. I wanted to have this done days ago but a “pet issue“ came up that distracted us around Friday and Saturday, then on Sunday I got a “surprise day trip away from the house”. We went to the zoo, which was a lot of fun but I feel like it extended my illness considering it was about 40 degrees out and I’ve been coughing a lot more. Now as its Tuesday I might have strep throat- but good news, we found medication that has really helped me (and puts me to sleep for like 9 hour intervals) so I’m good to go!

The zoo was also a lot of fun :3 I’ve always been in LOVE with animals and took a lot of pictures.

Just a word of precaution though- my reviews were very new at the time so I wasn’t very good at it... I’m not saying I am now, but I can see improvement.  

Also, like last year we are treated to art by one of my favorites: Tokimekiwaku, who makes the yandere themed visual novel series I’m a big fan of, Liar Liar.

Now before I officially start with the review I wanted to show everyone the special themed boxes they gave us:

I’m pretty sure this wasn’t done with last years crate, so I really like this touch of Halloween themed designing. I hope we get one for Christmas too~

Now, because I forgot to take pictures of it I’ll quickly cover the Suteki Crate items. I know I’ve been forgetting them as of late and I have no idea why.

In this months crate, we could get: a Maple Leaf Hello Kitty plush, Cardcaptor Sakura life sized wand, Jiji plush and carrier from Kiki’s delivery service to match the included Kiki headband, a Mochi-style pumpkin plush, a My Melody lantern, New Nintendo 2DS XL with Kingdom Hearts 3D, and a Spirited Away music box. 

I’m already predicting that by the end of this review, I will have favored this crate to last years. I was in love with quite a few items from it, but I’m excited to compare the two~

First we get some of these adorable and fun Sanrio Gift Bags. You get 8 in total and each feature the same, colorful mascots donning their Halloween best on clear pouch-sized bags. You can use them for yourself or use them to show someone a little Halloween spirit, and they could also work as a last-minute emergency pack if you’re in a hurry or run out of normal food storage packs.

I didn’t end up using these for Halloween. My plans of getting a bunch of “fun“ things to give away didn’t happen this year so we only gave away a piece or two of candy each, nor did I have anyone special to use them on. For now i’ll be hanging on to them, but I’m in love with the fact that A: They’re practical, and B: they’re SANRIO, these are the perfect additions for a cutie kitchen!

Speaking of we also got these Doki Doki Halloween Mugs featuring Tomomi and Nuki ♥

For a while I wasn’t too excited with the original Doki Doki items we were getting, I mean I like them, but at the same time we were promised apparel and fun accessories and it felt like we weren’t getting that in comparison to what we got last year.

While I’m not the type who uses a mug ALL the time, I do use them for DIY, crafts, and when I’m sick like now...

I also LOVE how cute the design it :D it’s perfect for Halloween or any time of the year! I love the pop of color on the design, and the mischievous but cutesy styling to create a precious, unique piece for the Doki Doki branding. 

 The cute accessories keep on coming~

We also got a pair of these one-size fits all Tsum Tsum Socks, available in 9 different designs x3 considering I’m obsessed with Minnie I’m happy to have gotten this one. But there is irony here, I already have a pair of socks that look exactly like these- minus the tsum tsum.

The socks are ultra-soft and comfortable. I’ve worn them a few times already and I’m in love with how cute they look paired with my strappy shoes. They end directly beneath the ankle- something that would have bugged me to no end as a child. For some reason I HATED socks like that.

However, I do have my concerns with the socks. It’s a little bit silly, but I’m actually worried about snagging issues because of how soft they are. As stupid as this is going to sound, I’m also bothered by the discolored spots.

I’m weird like that I know. But their paws should be Black or White, not skin-tone.

We also got this kawaii Rabbit Ragdoll Keychain. The perfect spoopy accessory for costumes, cuddling, or to give your own doll a buddy:

I’m not sure what I’ll name her just yet, Patches feels a little cliche.

Now in comparison to the 2-types of plush items we got last year this one falls a tiny-bit flat. I don’t feel any sort of spookiness to it- however, I’m also a sucker for ragdolls and things inspired by them so I still really like it ♥ I know Yoko got attached to it fairly quick. 

Next is our monthly Hoppe-Chan, who once again decks herself out in fun, colorful Halloween charms. She was available in orange or purple with 3 different designs, each with a pumpkin, bat, or witches hat ornament. You can probably tell which one I got right?

I wish I got/saw what the bat one looked like, I love bats :D but the reason I’m rating this one a bit lowly is because I think I actually prefer last years to this one. While I like this ones colors... it looks like a cheap knock-off to the previous one. As a stand-alone Hoppe-chan I like it enough, and I love the idea of them introducing alternate style/color varieties lately, but when you compare to the two I feel like last years was superior.

We’re approaching our final few items now, and they go together wonderfully!

First we get some Cat Paws, which as an avid cat-lover I entirely approve of ♥ I always wanted a pair of realistic cat paws gloves so I was beyond happy to pull these out x3 I wore them for Halloween and paired them with the next item we got.

Rating: ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ 

They’re soft and thick, very plush with details and molding around the paws to create an almost realistic paw.

The only real issue is that they are a bit impractical, sadly. My fingernails were so crammed up in them they were kind of bent and a little sore. Not only that but the way the hand is shifted in there could be uncomfortable to some, and you can’t do very much with them on. But that’s kind of a given, isn’t it? 

Ultimately I love them, but they might not be for everyone...

Which is pretty much every day for me~

These are adorable, realistically proportioned Neko Mimi/Cat Ears. Featuring a black color scheme and pink undertones, a bell on each ear, and a ribbon.

But once again there is some irony.

I JUST bought a pair of cat ears from Hot Topic on my birthday (October 15th if you forget ;3). However, they were grey with alternate pink ribbons on them, so I wore those to work and these black ones for Halloween.

I LOVE these ears! They’re so cute! I’m obsessed with black cats in particular, so they are really fun to wear. They don’t look weird on the head at all, they look practically natural. However there is one tiny little issue... one of my bells don’t work T^T the little thingy inside fell out I guess, or its stuck.

It’s a tiny bummer, but one I’m willing to live with.

Content - 4 out of 5. I loved everything, and the items were great in general :D in terms of pricing I felt like it was well worth it in comparison to last years box (we got a lot of cheaper, small items if you didn’t check out that entry)

Theme: 5 out of 5. It’s dead-on Halloween! Even the box reflected that!

Total Rank: 14 out of 15 Cuties. I remember ranking the prior years box as being fairly high on my scale- but in all honesty back then I didn’t know what I was doing. I think by now I’d actually rate it within a 7-9 range. The items were much cheaper and on a small sale in comparison to this crate, and while I admit I love the plush, hair clips, and Hoppe-chan from last years, I overall prefer this one.

1. Tomomi and Nuki mug - I HAD to give them the top spot this year. I love how the design not only fits the cute and mischievous side to Doki Doki crate, but I like how it clearly says Halloween!

2. Cat Ears - Kawaii ♥ I love the additional accessories 

3. Cat Paws - generic sure, but I LOVE kitties and I always wanted a pair. The detail on them is really nice too. 

4. Sanrio Bags - I love the colorful pops of halloween colors and styles! 

5. Hoppe-Chan - usually ranks a lot higher, but she’s kind of plain this year...  

6. Rabbit Ragdoll - A big generic as well. I love the mix of patch fabrics used though and it looks so precious~

7. Tsum Tsum Socks - in comparison to the other items they feel a bit generic. They don’t really feature any special designs or Halloween-esque details.

Okay Cuties, that does it for another review :P I’m hoping to hurry and get my November’s done, but I’m confident that I can cover them and my December crates no problem!

Last minute DIY costumes that aren’t totally BASIC

(ok maybe some of these are basic, but they’re more than just throwing on a random dress from your closet and taping a social media logo to it):

Many of the Studio Ghibli movies have characters with relatively simple costumes like

Kiki from Kiki’s Delivery Service

Chihiro from Spirited Away

Sophie from Howl’s Moving Castle.

 Pretty much any anime school boy.

School girl costumes can be a bit trickier (but they’re still doable last minute) because the uniforms can all be so unique but that’s not usually the case with boys’ uniforms. If you want to be recognizable, choose a character with some defining feature, be it brightly colored hair or a distinctive prop. Take Light Yagami, for example:

It’s just a tan jacket, red tie, white shirt, and dark brown pants. Add a Deathnote and you’re good. You could even skip the tan jacket if you wanted to.

Tuxedo Mask from Sailor Moon

 This costume would be easily simplified. He doesn’t need all of the buttons or the white vest and bow tie to be recognizable.

You basically just need to follow the color scheme on this one (mostly dark blue, beige, black, and gray) and wear bangs in front of your eyes. These aren’t even all of her outfits. Jaehee and Rika would also be pretty simple to make costumes for too. The guys are a bit more complex but Yoosung, V, and Jumin are doable in such short notice.

I think they’d all be pretty recognizable alone. Especially the Twins and Stan. My sister dressed as Mabel a few years ago. All we had to do for the costume was paint the shooting star on a pink sweatshirt from Walmart and everyone (at least all of the kids) knew who she was, even when she didn’t have the book.

Marco Diaz and Star Butterfly

I actually did a simplified version of Star a couple years back (same year my sister went as Mabel). I wore black converse with striped socks (could have worn boots though) and a blue dress with a pink squid that a safety pinned to the front. Devil horns were easy to find but I didn’t have a real wand. Marco just wears a red hoodie over a white t shirt and black pants. Star is easy to dress as by yourself, so I would skip solo Marco if you want people to know who you are.

Any of the main characters from Phineas and Ferb

Doofenshmirtz and Vanessa are both not pictured but they would be easy costumes to make too. It would be fun to do Candace and Vanessa together.

Sharpay and Ryan

Basically any combination of flamboyant, color-coordinated, early 2000′s fashion would work for this. Give Ryan a hat and you’re good to go.

Troy and Gabriella (you could probably get away with Troy by himself if you did the basketball uniform)

Will Turner

I think any of his incarnations would be pretty easy.

Newsies (film) - These are really simple costumes because you just need a button up shirt, dress pants, a hat, and some boots to look the part. For Jack Kelly you’ll need a red bandana and a black cowboy hat, lasso rope optional. 

For Spot Conlon, you’ll just need some red suspenders and maybe a cane (plus his signature smirk) 

My sister and I did genderbent Jack and Spot back in 2012. You can’t see them in the picture but I wore a gray, high waisted pencil skirt with oxfords. 

Other recognizable characters include Mush, Racetrack, Crutchy, Kid Blink, and Skittery.

Percy Jackson – Orange Camp Halfblood shirt, jeans, a sword or better yet a normal black Bic pen.

Annabeth Chase – Same as Percy, minus the pen, add a Yankees baseball hat.

Early 2000s pop punk group:  ex. Jonas Brothers, All-American Rejects, Panic! At the Disco

Everyone always does French Kiss, how about just normal Kiss?

It’s so easy. My sister did this one for a Decades Day party in middle school. She won 1st place in the costume contest for the 80s. She just wore a black shirt, black faux leather leggings, and 2 belts from Hot Topic crisscrossed over her shoulders.

Broadway: 

The Phantom - See Tuxedo Mask, just wear a half mask and no top hat.

Christine - White dress/nightgown, maybe add a red rose.

 Enjolras – At the most basic you could do a white shirt with black or brown pants and a GIANT red flag, a red vest or jacket would be cool too. 

Fantine – Just a white dress so this one is better in a group.

Eponine – Rags in earth tones, dirt/soot makeup, newsie hat.

Obviously there are many more costumes than this to choose from but I hope you enjoyed this super long list.

Quirks: Doesn’t like eating in front of others unless she knows them well,  fiddles with hair when nervous, believes in the paranormal/aliens/cryptids

Likes: Cute things, sweet foods/drinks, musicals, playing video games, spring, early 2000’s pop music, anime, dying her hair, favorite animals are bunnies and cats

Dislikes: being alone, the cold, horror movies, people that talk down to her
