#too fucking tired for this#I have a cold and fever and sore throat I don't want to have to deal with this anxiety right now#swedish unemployment service can go fuck itself once again#was put in a program through an agency half a year ago or so that does work-training etc#a few weeks ago there was a re-organization with the agency getting disbanded and everything moved to a different agency#and somewhere in that move I've once again been lost and forgotten as fucking usual#my program should have been renewed so I could keep doing work-training but now it might get renewed too late so I end up with#a few-weeks long gap before it's approved. Which could cost me my already very slim unemployment benefits/money#the poor worker I got hold of is trying her best to help me but it might already be too late to save without getting a gap#and I'm literally not allowed to come in to work until this is solved as the agency responsible for the program doesn't allow it#due to insurance reasons. and going against that might just disqualify me from participating in the training-program altogether#so tomorrow I'm gonna have to call work and tell them that sorry I won't come into work next week and I don't know when I'm allowed back#and desperately hope they'll allow me back once everything has been renewed despite being forced to abruptly leave like that#and I just want to crawl into a hole and rot#just needed to ramble somewhere and I'm not opening discord again anytime soon I can't handle that whole shit as well rn#delete later

So I just discovered your maned wolf Jaskier and I thought I might add something I know about them. As the original person mentioned they are not foxes or wolves but more like a wild dog but not. They are their own thing. Also their pee smells like marijuana. I've seen some at the the national zoo in D.C. they do better in pairs or with company then on their own. The last one they had before the pair of brothers they had when I went didn't do good on their own. Their legs are sk long because they are made to see over tall grass. I love manned wolves they are so unique.
This is such a delightful bunch of facts about maned wolves! Thank you for sharing your knowledge, I adored finding out more about these fascinating creatures. As thanks, here’s a slightly different take on maned wolf!Jaskier for you.
True Colours
It was rare for graduates of Aretuza to get together. Mostly because their motives and goals were rather at odds with each other usually so it wasn't a good idea to get together. Things could get rather unpleasant. But, once in a while, they could set their ambitions aside and enjoy each other's company.
"I'm telling you, she was scum," Yennefer giggled, leaning into Fringilla's shoulder. "You can do miles better."
"I just wish I'd known what she was like before I wasted all that time on her." Nursing a freshly broken heart, Fringilla was eager for any kindness her peers would show her. "Humans are scum."
All too eager to agree, Yennefer nodded along. Humans were rather unfortunate creatures, she couldn't really help with that, ridding the Continent of them was quite unethical. But the thing about true colours, she could most definitely help with that.
"I've got the perfect spell! We can reveal the whole Continent's true colours." Laughter went up around them at the declaration and Yennefer sniffed as she straightened up. "You can all help. Or watch and learn."
It was quite amazing, how much power five drunken sorceresses could harness. The spell took a considerable amount of rather raw, unrefined Chaos and they all sprawled on the ground in a sweaty pile by the time it was done. Alas, in their drunken stupor, they noted that the spell had done nothing other than make the sky flash and rumble in an ever spreading wave until it moved out of sight.
The next morning they were all suitably hungover and more than ready to return to their usual duties. There was only so much time they could spend with each other before the truce ended and they were at each other's throats again.
Somewhere else on the Continent it was another beautiful day for Jaskier to follow Geralt around. He said follow because he'd once again managed to piss his boyfriend off and sent him stomping off ahead.
"Look, all I said was that you'd look better if you just glowered a little less," Jaskier grumbled. The lute case bounced against his back like it always did when he did a little jog to keep up with Geralt. "You do give the wrong impression sometimes. I swear you do this deliberately, hide the fact you're an absolutely cuddly sweetheart under all those onion-y layers of doom, gloom and...I have nothing that rhymes. Broom? Shroom? Groom? Fume! Because you're fuming!"
Funnily enough, it did nothing to ease Geralt's sulk but Jaskier was undeterred. This was nothing more than a blip in the journey of their love. A bit of bad weather, not even a storm.
They wandered in a manner Jaskier would call aimless while Geralt described as optimal in the hunt for a contract. At least it got them to a town in decent time, the soft summer light enough to get to an inn for food and a performance. Jaskier was ecstatic.
His set was going great, everyone was merry, having a blast as he belted out shanty after drinking song. Ale flowed, as did the coin. The sun was setting and he set his lute aside for a quick break. One moment he was staring out over the tavern and the next the world lurched. He was shorter, on all fours and everything looked and smelled different. Especially the patrons. A variety of animals stared back at him before pandemonium exploded. Most creatures reared back, staring in terror into the corner Geralt had been in, which was quite glaringly empty.
"What has that bastard done to us?" The cry went up and the dogs and foxes in the tavern rallied, ready to hunt Geralt down.
"I did nothing." A familiar voice rang through the room and everyone backed away as a harvest mouse climbed onto the table. Cute and defenceless, Geralt stared out at the tavern from the top of the table, nose twitching.
From his vantage point on the stage, with his long legs, Jaskier could see how the villagers weren't convinced. In fact, they saw an easy target and looked ready to exact revenge on an innocent party. Snarling, he raced to the other side of the room and hopped onto the table, towering over Geralt.
"He's innocent." Sharp teeth were bared fiercely at the crowd. When it didn't look like they would back down, Jaskier did the only thing he could. He picked Geralt up in his mouth and pretended to swallow while the tiny harvest mouse clambered out the side of his mouth and got lost in Jaskier's thick mane.
The villagers didn't look all that appeased but Jaskier didn't allow them to get out of control.
"Tasted like disappointment. Now. Shall we howl at the moon?" For some reason it seemed to do the trick and the shock of being turned into animals turned into a celebration.
In the morning, everyone was back to their regular human form, including Geralt. They had to make a hasty run from the village before the angry mob punished them for their existence.
"Whew! That was exciting. But also, what the fuck happened?"
There were no answers. Each night, as the sun set, they changed into animal form. Jaskier a maned wolf, Geralt a harvest mouse.
"I can't work like this," Geralt growled. "We're getting to the bottom of this."
Only, there seemed to be no help. Everywhere they went, the whole Continent seemed to turn into animals from dusk until dawn. Most villagers were wolves, bears, cats and other animals that could be tamed but the wild, aggressive undertones of predators were still there. A few were goats, cows and sheep, a few bulls. By contrast, courts were full of snakes and birds. Rarer, less straightforward to deal with. In Geralt's opinion, less pleasant to deal with. And no court's sorceress would give him a straight answer. They had to know something, Geralt knew when he was being lied to. But he didn't know what they were hiding.
With no other option, he headed home. Each night he climbed into Jaskier's mane, allowed his boyfriend to keep him safe from owls - some natural, others transformed humans who enjoyed the hunt. At the base of Kaer Morhen, he ran into something most unusual. A hyena gave Jaskier a flat stare from where it was curled in the overgrowth. By its stomach was a capybara and a hare, both looking a bit patchy and weathered. Even more interestingly, there was a cockatoo on the top of its head, eyes closed.
"Friends," Jaskier called, "we come in peace."
Never before had Jaskier felt more threatened than when a capybara and hare looked ready to tear his throat out.
"Eskel. Lambert," Geralt called and climbed to sit on the end of Jaskier's snout. "You made friends."
The hyena got to its feet, looming over the transformed Witchers protectively. "You know these two?"
"Geralt you fuck," the hare growled. "Is this your doing?"
"Would I be here if it was?" Jaskier didn't have to see the harvest mouse's face to know Geralt was rolling his eyes. Still, he tried.
It made the cockatoo screech out a laugh. "Crossed eyes do not become you, weird wolf thing."
Puffing up, Jaskier wanted to object but Geralt cut in. "Leave Jaskier out of this. Who are you travelling with?"
"I'm Aiden," the cockatoo replied, spreading his wings wide and bobbing down in a bird equivalent of a bow. "Cat Witcher by name, cockatoo by nature."
That, Geralt could have guessed, he was much more interested in the hyena who seemed keen to be forgotten. He stared at him until it got awkward.
"Cahir." The name said nothing but there was a broad, southern accent to it. Intrigued, Geralt wished he could take a better look at the man. He would be able to do so in the daylight.
Introductions out of the way, Geralt climbed down, only to scuttle across the gap and climb onto Eskel's back. The capybara grunted sleepily and settled back on the ground.
"Sleep. We've got quite the climb ahead of us tomorrow." At least it was warm, meaning the trek should only take a day without snow impeding them. They'd be home by evening.
They staggered through on four legs the following night. Mostly because Jaskier had insisted on stopping and admiring every angle of every view, sighing wistfully. Finally, they arrived at the door which had been left open a crack, only needing to be nudged open on silent, freshly oiled hinges.
"I was wondering when you'd get home," a voice greeted them. Vesemir did not look impressed as he looked over them. A gopher stared at them with a rather done expression. "Aretuza had a lot to answer for."

Ocean Eyes - Part 2
It was an unusually hot day, so i pulled out Mason's kiddy pool and filled it for him to cool off in. I was sat on one of the sun loungers close by reading my book where i could still keep an eye on him.
"Mom?"
"Yeah babe?"
"Is auntie Hannah coming round soon with Lucas? Im bored"
"They should be here soon buddy" i smiled over at him.
"Okay.... im hungry"
"Fine.... i'll go get you something but you have to come out the water while i'm inside...."
"Oh mom i dont wanna get out...."
"Mace come on now...." i rolled my eyes putting my book down.
"Knock knock" i heard a very familiar voice call out from behind, i turned and stared wide eyed at none other than Scott Evans!!
"Scott.... what... what are you doing here?" I asked standing up and walking over to the back gate to let him in.
"Chris told me where you were, i had to come see you! I've missed you! You stopped replying to my messages and wouldn't take my calls...."
"Yeah i'm sorry Scott, that was a dick move" i nodded, I had been friends with the Evan's since we were kids.... best friends with Chris and Scott "i was dealing with some stuff.... guess i didn't handle it well"
"I can see that" he said looking over at Mason who was sat in the pool with his back to us as he crashed some toys around "he yours?"
"He is, thats Mason"
"Well you gonna introduce me properly??" He asked being his usual sassy self!
"Sure, come on over" i led the way over to where Mason was playing feeling my heart racing, i hadn't been this nervous in forever!
"Hey Mace? I want you to meet a friend of mine...."
Mason turned to face us and i heard Scott audibly gasp.
"This is my friend Scott"
"Hi" he said shyly looking Scott over.
"Hey bud, its nice to meet you...." Scott smiled at Mason before turning his attention to me with wide eyes as Mason carried on playing as if we wasn't there.
"Is there something you need to tell me Y/N?....."
I looked away from Scott keeping my eyes on my son, i shook my head in disbelief..... i did not expect to be having this conversation today!
"You know his a spitting image...."
"I know Scott! Im not blind" i snapped.
"But how?? I mean i know how! But...."
"Hey! Its just us...." i heard Hannah call from inside, she always let herself in.
"Hey.... oh shit"
"Hey Hannah, good to see you" Scott smiled with a little wave.
"Scott..... what a surprise..."
"Han, can you watch Mason while i go inside and talk to Scott?" I asked as i shifted nervously on the spot.
"Sure".
"Hi auntie Y/N!" Lucas said loudly as he ran past me heading to Mason.
"Hey buddy" i smiled at him as i led the way into the house with Scott following close behind.
"Okay so spill it" Scott said breaking the awkward silence between us as he pulled out a chair and sat down at the kitchen table.
"What do you already know? What did Chris tell you about us?...." i asked avoiding eye contact with him.
"Well obviously i know the two of you used to hook up occasionally.... he said he just lost contact with you when you left town"
"Wow....." i scoffed shaking my head "is your brother still an asshole?"
"Why are you calling him an asshole? I thought you guys were friends??"
"We were. Then we were more.....or at least i thought so"
"You two were serious?"
"I guess not"
"He never said anything...."
"Before he made it 'big' with the whole Captain America thing we were serious"
"How serious?"
"Serious enough to get married....."
"Im sorry WHAT???!!"
"Yep"
"How did i not know about this??? when did this happen??" he stared at me with wide eyes and his mouth hanging open as he tried to process the information.
"You remember the weekend in Vegas for my birthday, before he started filming Winter Soldier?....that one night you got food poisoning and stayed in bed..."
"You got married in Vegas?! were you both drunk??"
"Nope, stone cold sober" i shrugged "god i loved him Scott.... he was telling me he loved me and talking about starting a family..... we walked past a chapel and he asked me to marry him. Promised we'd do it properly when we got home...."
"My god...... so what happened?"
"Chris wanted to wait until he finished filming to tell everyone.... or so he said. When he came home once he was done filming he told me we had made a mistake. His career was taking off and he wouldn't have time for a wife..... he was getting a lot of attention from women, he didn't want to be tied down with me did he?"
"Did he say that?!"
"He didn't have to, he was pictured with different women all the time" i shrugged.
"What an asshole!" Scott spat sounding pissed at his brother "how could he do that to you of all people??"
I shook my head as i thought back on the time i was heartbroken.... pining for my best friend... my husband, and he had so easily forgotten about me, i quickly wiped a stray tear away before Scott could see.
"I found out i was pregnant two weeks later. I tried calling him but he never answered or returned my messages..... so i made a choice. I decided to pack up and leave, start somewhere new where i could raise my baby. I received divorce papers shortly after which i signed and returned, i didnt want anything to do with him"
"You should have called me! I wouldve talked some sense into him!"
"He didn't want me Scott let alone a baby.... he made his choice and i made mine" i smiled looking out the window at my beautiful boy "i dont regret it for a second, Mason is my world. He's my perfect little boy.... even if he does look like a spitting image of his father. Thats the hardest part.... its the eyes.... he has his eyes".
Scott was suddenly beside me pulling me into his arms and holding me tight.
"Im so sorry sweetie"
"Its fine.... it was a long time ago.... when Chris showed up here yesterday i nearly had a heart attack!" I mumbled against Scotts chest.
"I bet.... why was he here?"
"Apparently we're still married! That jackass never filed the papers! But now he's seeing someone and its getting serious he wants the option of marrying her"
"You should tell him about Mason....."
"I can't Scott, he'd hate me.... what if he tried to take Mason from me?"
"He wouldn't do that, he might want a chance to get to know his son but he wouldn't hurt you like that....."
"Can you be sure? 100% sure that he wouldn't want to take Mason?? I've seen some of his interviews about wanting kids...."
"Don't you want Mason to know his father?"
"Of course! You dont think i wanted my son to have a dad? I tried to tell him Scott but he ghosted me!"
"Look i love my brother you know that, i know what he was like a few years back, he went through a phase of being an absolute douche bag..... but his different now"
"I'll think about it okay?"
"Okay..... i'll be there for you through it all i promise"
"Thank you Scotty, god I've missed you" i smiled giving him another hug "you staying for lunch? Mason's hungry"
"Id love to".
Scotts POV
Y/N stood at the front door waving me off with Mason, my NEPHEW! I still couldn't believe it.... Chris was a Father!!
I waved to them both as i pulled away and started my drive home. 20 minutes into my journey my cell started to ring, i looked down to see it was Chris calling.
"Hey"
"Hey, what you up to?"
"Just on my way home, i went to go see Y/N"
"Oh.... h..how was she?"
"Surprised to see me, but she was good"
"Good, thats good. What did she tell you?" He sounded worried, nervous even.
"I know everything...." i huffed out a breath "how could you be so fucking stupid Chris?? you married our best friend.... our oldest friend and then left her!"
"I was such an asshole back then.... i know, but i can't change that now can i?"
"No i guess not"
"It was so good seeing her yesterday man, made me realise how much I've missed her. I was hoping we could work things out, be friends at least but.... Scott she fucking hates me!"
"Can't say i blame her....."
"Im not that guy anymore Scott" he said sadly and i knew that, id seen the change in my brother over the years.
"Try and talk to her again, maybe she just needed to get over the shock of seeing you"
"You think she'd wanna see me?"
"I have no clue, but if you want to sort things out with her your going to have to make an effort with her. Let her see your not the same asshole that left her"
"Maybe i should just leave her alone, she's been fine without me...."
"Chris..... i wasn't going to say anything but theres something you should know...."

Insufferable (iv) - George MacKay x reader
(PART 1) (PART 2) (PART 3)
requested: yes/no (this is it. i'm done finally. thank you for your time.)
God bless @/okay.l0z
"Hi! I've been reading your fics and I love them so much bc there's hardly any around. I was wondering if you take insta requests and if so can you do one with George and the reader are like enemies to loves and they have really cute moments but then end up fighting all the time and then it escalates and they end up having sEx and then get together or something bc I will THRIVE IF YOU DO!" ... "Is it bad if I want it long ass?"
pairing: George MacKay x reader
warnings: an annoying ass insecurity moment, mentions of matcha
word count: 1,412
a/n: We wrote this during a sorority's pledge night and thought we were in the middle of a cult initiation ---- Basically the same thing but they didn't offer us any of the blood of previous sisters. #bummed
You laid awake most of the night, staring at the ceiling, deep in thought. What had you done. There was a clock hanging on George's wall near his bed, the ticking seeming to grow louder and louder as you noticed it. Where did the lipstick come from earlier. His duvet was blue, not uncharacteristic for him, but you were pleasantly surprised at how soft his sheets were and that he slept on the side you usually avoided. Did you even love him.
Did you even love him?
What if you had been so wrapped up in passion and rage that it just felt like you did? As your high began to wear off, you wondered why you were even there. George deserved better than someone who wasn't sure. How could he have been in love with you for so long yet he chose now to make it evident? Why couldn't he have told you years prior, when you weren't finally getting somewhere with your career? The horrific aspect of it all was the fact that as soon as the sun came up the next day, the next day of your real lives away from the theatre, George would have the possibility of deciding that he didn't actually love you. Then where would you be? Back in bed with Mark, living out your dreary day-by-day as if nothing had ever happened? As you laid there, thinking about all the possibilities of what could happen, there was still one major thing on your mind: Where did the lipstick come from?
As the sunlight began to peek through the blinds, your heart sank. You felt sick and worried, knowing that at any moment, he could wake up. What would you tell him? 'I don't know what's going on. You deserve someone who does. You deserve someone who wears that shade of lipstick.' Surely not. You turned your head to look at George, his hair sprawled out over his dark pillowcase as he slept peacefully, the covers wrapping around his bare torso. The stripes from the blinds barred across his back, the latter pattern changing every so often as the sun moved behind a cloud or higher into the sky. His face was calm and without the intensity, it holds when he's awake, mainly a difference between when he's deep in thought. He looked younger and almost zen. You itched to know what he was dreaming.
You bit your lip slightly and without thought, picked yourself up out of bed to silently sweep your clothes up from around the room. Guilt weighed on your heart as you took one last look at the boy before you left his apartment. You needed to run, to keep running until your lungs burned and your legs could barely hold you up, something else to give you feeling rather than having to sort your feelings out. So you did, in your new dress and bare feet; you ran.
In the next few weeks, you attempted to gather your thoughts and sort your life out. How could you invite George in when you didn't even have a spot for him? You started off by addressing the fact that you had gotten kicked out of your own show for punching an understudy. You had texted the director earlier begging him to meet up so you could explain the situation in the hopes of smoothing over whatever feathers you had inadvertently ruffled. Thankfully he had agreed.
"Yeah, don't worry about it. I wasn't firing you. I literally just wanted you to calm down."
You thought about his sentence said over a steaming cup of a matcha flavored drink, his rowdy hair blowing frantically around his head as your eye twitched slightly. Your head filled with new script plots and coursework to mix with the overwhelmed unease you experienced whenever George flashed into your mind.
His face, his hands, his voice. Every sacred touch from the man seemed to be tattooed on you, but the thought of him only came to you at night when you were alone with your never-ending stream of consciousness. You thought mainly about what it was like to finally rest in his arms. It had been too long since you hadn't talked to him. Had he forgotten about you? Had he moved on to whomever the lipstick belonged to? You started staying in most nights, catching up on work to keep you busy.
I love you.
I love you.
I love you.
Why had he said that? Why hadn't you said it back?
It was in November when you got an email from your local movie theater about a "throwback" night. Headlining was none other than Judge Dredd. You chuckled to yourself slightly, looking at the paperwork surrounding you and---for once---thought fuck it. You deserved a night off. Grabbing your jacket and heading out, you noticed it beginning to snow. You pulled your jacket tighter around you to combat the cold air, your mind briefly drifting to the night when you were stuffed into George's car, bundled up in his hoodie. You were within walking distance to the theater, and after getting your ticket, your seat was even easier to find. Judge Dredd hadn't made it big in the '90s---shocker---so you were honestly surprised that more than four people had shown up to the screening. Sinking into your chair, you felt small. The movie flashed onto the screen and you chuckled to yourself at the opening song, thinking of the last time you had seen the film with your brother.
And George.
The seat next to you creaked as someone settled in beside you. You didn't think to look up, only the thought of why they would have picked that seat when the whole theater was basically free crossed your mind. A familiar scent invaded your senses, your brows furrowing as you turned your head, catching the gaze of George. The two of you shared a look, your heartbeat quickening as the blues in his eyes seemed to deepen. He didn't look sad, his expression still dressed like the day on the street. You wanted to cry, finding it hard not to tell him everything at once. Instead, you turned back to the screen, breathing shallowly. A few moments passed of Sylvester Stalone's voice filling the theater until your hand fell beside your leg, wanting to be closer to George. You didn't look at him again, biting back the emotion threatening to spill over. His pinky reached out for you and you moved to grab his hand in yours, intertwining your fingers with his. He let out a sigh of relief and you took the opportunity to lean towards him, resting your head on his shoulder, the softness of his sweater feeling like home to you. You exhaled a breath you didn't know you were holding in, finally feeling at peace.
"I love you," you whispered.
EPILOGUE.
You slipped your dress on, struggling to get the zipper up, feeling like you had lost your independence. You had been spoiled with a man that would zip you up without being asked. You groaned slightly, tugging your shoes on instead and calling out. George peeked around the doorframe, his eyebrows raised slightly as he tugged at his cuffs. "Do you mind?" You asked, holding up your hair and turning your back to him. You heard him chuckle, walking over to you and zipping your dress up, placing a kiss to the back of your neck. "I feel like a damn beached whale."
George let out an almost snickering response. "I love whales."
"You're not helping." You turned to him, rolling your eyes slightly. His features seemed to soften as he looked you over. He still looked at you like you were standing beside the altar next to him.
You stretched your back. He shrugged. "We could skip?"
"No, last time you said that I got pregnant." You fought not to smile at your own complaint. "I'm done being pregnant. Maybe if you win tonight, it'll be over."
George rolled his eyes, bending slightly to mockingly rest his cheek against your stomach. "Take your time, little one. Mummy's just being an ass."
You pushed him away from you. "Stop corrupting her! I'm supposed to be the favorite parent!"
He crossed his arms, a smirk playing at his lips. "Oh, I beg to differ."
You pushed past him, grabbing your bag as you left the room. "You're insufferable. You know that?"
"Bite me."

“I knew that someday I would find you here again.”
Ellie felt her heart go up to her throat. She didn't know if she had really heard his voice or if her mind was playing a trick on her, she didn't dare look back. Her pulse accelerated fast and faster and her breathing became more and more difficult. She put her two hands over the edge, trying to stabilize herself as she rose, still not looking back. Ellie swallowed hard and closed her eyes, and without a second thought she turned around. She opened her eyes slowly and felt them automatically begin to fill with tears once more, when she saw who was in front of her.
It was Colt, laying against his white motorcycle looking at her with a smile. Ellie couldn't believe that he was there at that very moment, it was like he came out of some dream that sooner or later, she was going to have to wake up from. She approached him slowly, gradually increasing her speed, until their two bodies collided, enveloping each other. Ellie squeezed him hard against her, still feeling that at some point he was going to disappear, and she heard Colt drop a sigh as he also pressed himself hard against her. Tears streamed non-stop from her face, hidden in Colt's neck, he was stroking her hair gently as he held her. She hadn't felt that happy in a long time, it was as if in his arms she once again found shelter from all her problems, all her fears, just like in the past. The two held each other for a long time, neither saying a word. Ellie dropped the last remaining tears and sighed, a mixture of feelings in her body. She broke the hug by taking a step back and connected her eyes with Colt's.
"Hey there, speed demon." he said as he took her hand "We have a lot to talk about."
—
Colt and Ellie sat on the edge of the cliff, the two looking towards the horizon. Millions of things were going through her head at that moment. It had been so long since they had seen each other and Ellie didn't know exactly what to do, or what to say. Colt seemed to read her thoughts as he cleared his throat and began to speak.
"How are you?" he said looking at her, Ellie hugged her legs and looked at him.
"I’m good" she said, it was the biggest lie she’d ever told him "How have you been?"
"I've had a few exhausting days," he said, smiling "But everything is getting better.”
Ellie was happy to know that Colt's life was getting better since the last time she saw him, after everything that had happened to him almost a year ago, she knew that Colt more than anyone else deserved a little happiness and peace in his life, even though she wasn't the reason he felt those things.
"I'm glad you're happy." she said fighting the tears that threatened to come out "How's business?"
"Which one?" Colt laughed, Ellie did the same.
"Both." she said, looking at him expectantly.
"Well, repairs in the auto-shop are about to end" Ellie saw Colt's expression light up as he spoke "In a month the place is going to operate again as usual."
"That's incredible, Colt.” she smiled “I know how much you wanted to rebuild that place.”
"Yes." Colt said "And about the other business," Colt looked at his arm, and Ellie noticed a trail of ink on his skin, the acronym MPC in the same place where she had seen Teppei's tattoo long ago "I've managed to build a good crew."
Ellie thought of the old crew, Logan, Mona, Ximena and Toby. She realized that for her the only Mercy Park Crew that could exist in her mind were her old friends and her, no one else. Maybe everyone had moved on and she wasn't sure that some of them still remembered all the good times they spent together as she did, she had always been the most sensitive of them all anyway. That’s why she had won so much joy, but lost so many fights too.
"It seems like everything in your life is going well then." Ellie said.
Colt laughed and moved his gaze to the horizon. Ellie noticed how his laugh was not one of joy, more like a sarcastic laugh. She stared at him for a moment, focusing on how his chest was going up and down because of his breathing, not saying a word for a few seconds.
"I should be happy, shouldn't I?" he asked, looking at her again.
"Aren't you happy?” she asked.
"Are you?" Colt said.
The question taken her by surprise, but Ellie knew the answer. She had asked herself the same question so many times that she had convinced herself that she would always have the same answer. At the end of the day, when the moon was up in the sky and there were no classmates to laugh with, no teachers to listen to, no homework and no texts to copy, it was then, while she was lying on her bed, with the lamp on and looking towards the ceiling, that she realized that she could never really be happy. Ellie wondered if after a long day Colt lay down in his bed and thought about her too.
"All I ever wanted was to prove to my father that I was worthy of following his footsteps." Colt pulled her out of her thoughts "Ever since I knew about his world, I've wanted to be a part of it, and I imagined myself in a few years leading the crew, letting my dad rest and devote himself to his passion, which were the cars." Colt looked back at the tattoo on his arm "I just didn’t imagine it would have been so soon.”
Ellie could see in Colt's eyes how the memory of his father still hurt him like the first day. She knew that such pain didn't go away overnight, she couldn’t imagine how she would be now if she were in that situation, maybe she would have lost her purpose to live, maybe she would have moved on and become much stronger because of the losses of life, but Colt was still there, even though Ellie knew it hurt, he was still there, going forward, he had never given up about anything. Ellie took his hand and stroked it gently, giving him courage to keep talking.
"Now I have it all," Colt continued “I still remember when I told him that one day I was going to carry on everything he had worked for, all that meant to be part of us, and he had given me so much advice on how to handle it, the business and all, as if he knew in some way that he had little time left." Colt interlaced his fingers with Ellie's, looking at her hand "The only thing he didn't tell me," their eyes connected "It's that an empire is nothing if you don't have someone to share it with."
"Colt..." Ellie said on the verge of tears.
"But it's okay," Colt shook his head "You knew what you wanted and you took it, just like I did, I can't blame you for that." Colt sighed "You’re studying what you want, you have new friends, new lovers, new challenges to face..."
"Lovers?" Ellie interrupted him with a frown.
Colt didn't look at her, on the contrary, his eyes were fixed on the calm sea that covered everything around them, and suddenly everything in Ellie's head made sense. There were days when she walked the streets near the college with her friends and swore to hear the same sound that Colt's motorcycle made, but she looked everywhere and never saw anything. Sometimes she thought she could see him looking at her from afar, and when she closed her eyes and opened them again, no one was there. It didn't happen very often, only about two times a month, but every time it happened it was like Ellie was hoping that one of those times she would turn around and see him with a smile waiting for her at the end of the street, but it never happened. Still, everything was clearer now, after hearing what he said.
"So it was you." Ellie said, looking at him expectantly waiting for his answer.
"I wanted to know if you were okay," Colt said "I needed to know if you were okay."
"You knew where to find me all this time and you never came close to me" Ellie said, a little sadness in her voice.
"You seemed happy" Colt said.
Of course Colt thought she was happy, if he only saw her when she was out on the street with her friends, or when she was going to meet them somewhere. All those moments of momentary happiness which, in the end, had no meaning to her. Colt had no idea what was going on behind closed doors, and it was obvious because he mentioned that Ellie had a new love. She thought of the times when she and Julian walked down the street with ice cream in their hands, smiling at each other while holding hands, she thought of the times when Julian would steal a little kiss from her lips just to make her smile. Colt seriously thought that Ellie had allowed herself to feel things for someone other than him because at some point, he must have seen them together.
"Colt, about the lovers thing, I..."
"You don't owe me any explanation," Colt said smiling, his smile looking totally genuine "If you're happy, then I can live with that."
Ellie thought carefully about what she was going to say next.
"But I do want to explain it," she put a hand on his cheek making him look directly into her eyes "Whatever you saw out there, it's not what it looks like."
"Ellie, seriously, you do not have to tell me ..."
"I have to, Colt" she raised her voice a little, making Colt shut up "I need to say it because I feel like if I don’t do it, it will burn me inside" Ellie sighed, trying to gain strength "There is not a single day, Colt Kaneko, there is not a single day when I don’t think about you. "
Colt stared at her for a moment, his caresses stopped and Ellie regretted saying those words as soon as they came out of her mouth. It had been so long that she didn't know if Colt still felt the same, fuck, she didn't even know if Colt had found a new person and he wanted to move on, but he wasn't there with her then, at that exact moment, that exact day. Something had to be under all the dust, something she wanted to wake up again. Ashamed of what she had said, Ellie got up from where she was and walked towards her car, she could hear how a few steps followed behind her calling her name.
"Ellie, come back." his footsteps were being heard closer and closer.
"Colt, just go." Ellie said as she hurried her step.
It didn't take long for her to feel Colt’s hands grabbing her by the arm and flipping her around, he connected his lips to hers. The kiss took Ellie by surprise, but she responded as she felt his soft lips on hers. Colt deepened the kiss while taking her by the waist, Ellie wrapped her arms around his neck, the two holding each other tightly. Colt's kisses were desperate, hungry, with an intensity Ellie hadn't felt for a long time, in a way that only he could make her feel. Something inside her grew, as if his kiss had revived a part of her soul, a part of her heart that she thought was lost. She let herself be carried away for the moment, immersing herself in his warm touch, until she had to step aside to take a breath. Colt leaned his forehead on hers and the two looked into each other's eyes.
"I think about you every day of my life too." Colt said, breathing agitatedly "There's never been anyone like you and will never be."
Colt kissed her on the forehead and walked away from her toward his motorcycle. Ellie got closer to him slowly as he started the engine, turned on the lights and raised his head to look at her again, this time with a smile.
"I'm not giving up on you, Ellie." Colt said with a serious expression "I'm going to wait for you, however long it takes."
"Colt..." Ellie said wiping a tear off her face "How are you sure I'll ever come back?"
"I don't know," he replied, looking at the horizon, then looked at her again "But I know that no matter what happens, I’ll always remember you.”
Ellie saw Colt driving fast down the street she had come, tears falling from her eyes non-stop once more. She had him back for a minute, only to lose him again later. Ellie thought about all the things that still remained to be said, about all the things that remained to be done, but there was no time for that, yesterday was gone and there was no way to go back and fix the past. Maybe that was their destiny, to be those star-crossed lovers who would have always loved each other, but at the wrong time and place.
Ellie got in the car and took one last look at the cliff.
“Me too Colt, me too.”

Conversation
where the wild things went
Vice: Hello Max. This is your first film in five years. What on earth have you been doing with your time?
Max: Just living, you know? Living, going to school, getting done with school.
Vice: Did you ever worry, "Hang on, what if I've forgotten how to act"?
Max: I didn't really think about it until the first day or two shooting then I was like, "What the fuck am I doing here?". For the first couple of days the learning curve was pretty steep again.
Vice: How does one even go about preparing to play a sociopath? Presumably it wasn't method acting.
Max: I kind of feel like there is no such thing as acting that isn't method to some degree because if you're not actually experiencing it, then you're a fucking liar. I was talking with Billy [O'Brien - director] about it and - I forget the word that he keeps using - but it's an intuitive process. You just kind of feel it out, you know? I was pretty miserable while we were shooting, just because you're in a super dark brain space all day. Especially living in a place like Minnesota where we were shooting, six days a week. You don't get the opportunity to turn it off, you know? And that's great as far as the actual creative process goes but it sucks as far as trying to be a person.
Vice: Have you ever done a psychopath test?
Max: I don't think so.
Vice: Would you like to do one?
Max: Yeah, let's do it! Is it legit or is it some Facebook nonsense?
Vice: Oh, Facebook nonsense probably.
Max: So you're not licensed?
Vice: We're not unlicensed.
Max: I'm pretty sure it's an either-or thing.
Vice: So there are eight statements. You either agree or disagree. First one: "You rarely catch me making any plans. I'm far too spontaneous".
Max: Yeah, absolutely.
Vice: "If I got a better offer, I wouldn't mind cancelling longstanding plans".
Max: Yeah, that's probably true.
Vice: "It would be fun to drive fast cars, ride rollercoasters or go skydiving".
Max: I've been skydiving. Fast cars are fun. I don't get the appeal of rollercoasters. I guess I haven't really done a true roller coaster. It feels artificial.
Vice: Shall we disagree?
Max: No, let's agree.
Vice: Alright. "I think it's okay to step over other people to achieve my ambitions".
Max: I don't know. I don't think you necessarily need to it. I can't think of many situations that I've been in where that's necessary, where there isn't some other course of action you could take. Let's disagree.
Vice: Do you have an ambition?
Max: In the broader context of my life, I just want to gain skills. Recently I was doing an outdoor programme back in the States through this thing called NOLS [National Outdoor Leadership School], so I was off doing that for a couple of months. Getting better at being outdoors and learning how the natural world works. And I love playing music so getting better at that. Just learning to be a better, more competent person. Trying to not be a dick.
Vice: It's a good motto. Okay: "I'm very persuasive and getting people to get what I want is a real talent of mine".
Max: Agree! I think I'm pretty good at that. I've been manipulating my parents for years.
Vice: The perks of being a child star... What was that whole experience like?
Max: Really awful! Especially for children, the film world is just terrible. You can't grow up in that world and still have a connection to reality. At least if you're, like, really in it. Especially the poor folks out there who have stage parents. It's just so sheltered. The creative aspect of acting is one of the more amazing things that I've gotten to experience but everything outside of that is pretty bizarre.
Vice: Was it enough to make you think you might not want to do it anymore?
Max: I think, probably, yeah. Especially once Where the Wild Things Are came out. And that was my first real acting role too. Being thrown in the deep end as a young, pretty vulnerable person. And then you have an experience like that and there's all this stigma around it, back in the "real world". I went to the same school since I was in second grade, through most of high school, and I knew all these kids and they were my friends before and after but there was, coming back, this weird stigma, these weird assumptions that if you're in a film, you're an asshole and you don't exist in a grounded real world way.
Vice: What are your memories of working on that film?
Max: It was really important to Spike that the set was conducive to a child. So we had a million kids on set. All the crew was kind of invited to bring their families. And as a way to kind of understand the vibe that Spike wanted to cultivate, there was always music on set. The Smiths, Cemetery Gates and Big Mouth Strikes Again, all those songs. I have really wonderful nine-year-old memories of romping around on set and that music playing.
Vice: How does one move past an experience like that and into the world of adult acting?
Max: I think you just grow up and learn to be a person. I think one of the biggest learning curves for me, as a result of those experiences and then applying that to the real world, was that it took me a long time to learn to take a compliment. From twelve through to however old, you just kind of shut down. There's this assumption of an agenda. But you grow up and you learn to be a person and you temper the experiences of working in the film world with what people are actually like and you balance that.
Vice: Is there one thing you know now that you wish you knew then?
Max: No, I don't think so. I am the person I am as a result of a lot of those experiences and I love the people that I met and especially those people that I have experiences with. It is what it is. Can't change the past!
Vice: Okay: "My ability to make quick decisions means that I would suit a dangerous job".
Max: [Takes long time to decide answer] I dunno... The idea of being a smokejumper appeals to me.
Vice: What's a smokejumper?
Max: It's a term for the folks in the US that are forest firefighters and jump out of airplanes. That appeals to me.
Vice: What do you think you'd be doing if you weren't acting?
Max: Working in outdoor education probably. Working with kids or being in the outdoors. Or both.
Vice: Do you have a desire to keep acting?
Max: Yeah. I mean, I like doing it and I think creatively it's really cool and the people you get the opportunities to work with are often really wonderful people. It allows me to do other things in my own life. My parents have kind of helped me gain this perspective of it, but I think it's best for me to view it as a hobby. I like acting but I don't think it's healthy to do films back to back.
Vice: What was it about this script?
Max: I love Billy and I love Nick Ryan, the producer. I love Robbie Ryan, our cinematographer and I think, aesthetically, just the, Midwest middle America vibe, that's really cool. And the humour of the script. It's genuine and it has real emotion embedded in it but it's funny! That Fargo humour really appeals to me.
Vice: Do you have a favourite movie?
Max: It changes periodically, of course. Birdman has been one of my favourite films ever. It came out a couple of years ago and I've watched it half a dozen times. The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover. I rewatched that pretty recently and remembered how good it was. People keep talking to me about Donnie Darko in relation to this film and I like that one quite a bit.
Vice:"When others are crumbling under pressure, I'm usually the one with a cool head". Agree or disagree?
Max: Yes. I think so.
Vice: When was was the last time you lost your cool?
Max: I've been working on that skill and I think I'm getting pretty good at it. It's been awhile since I've been genuinely, deeply upset about something. One of my favourite things in the world is this scar right here [shows us a fairly impressive scar on his knuckle]. I got it punching walls. It was like the perfect teenage angst motivation. The first time, I was really upset in my house because I had read something about the use of American drone warfare and just how upsetting it was and how a bunch of civilians had just been murdered somewhere in the world. And then the second time was me being upsetting at my parents.
Vice: Alright, last one: "I'm rarely to blame for things going wrong, it's usually the fault of the people around me".
Max: I mean, yeah. But I'll disagree.
Vice: Okay, let's see your results You're 61% psychopath! "Though your conscience is in the right place, you have a pragmatic streak and generally aren't afraid to do your own dirty work".
Max: I'll take that.
Vice: There's more! "You're no shrinking violet but you're no daredevil either. You generally have a little trouble seeing things from other people's perspectives, but at the same time you're no pushover. Everything in moderation, including moderation, might sum up your approach to life".
Max: I like that. I'll take it!
