i don't necessarily dislike mike flannagan's work but the fall of the house of usher really got on my nerves after a while. the character of verna, especially, got so grating to me. she's the personification of death who sold what's basically a deal with the devil for the twins in exchange of the continuation of their bloodline, but she also acts like a moralizing avenger about it who won't shut the fuck up no matter what
#she exists to spell out the moral of the story (capitalism bad) directly to the camera in case you somehow missed it#frankly this series in general was just like comically over the top with what it was trying to communicate#likes they didn't trust us to grasp what the story and characters were all about if they didn't explain it to us on a 2 minute monologue#and some really on the nose symbolic imagery (like roderick seeing the bodies of the people he killed raining down)#also personalizing what should be a neutral entity like verna to the extent they did made her come across as hypocritical at times
