I want a something like a fish in a fishbowl experience without the cruelty that is a fish in a fishbowl is.
#ghost posts#fish in a fishbowl is relaxing to look at until you learn ™#I feel so bad for the betta fish we had when I was 9 we know better now#we had a 20gal aquarium later for neon tetras#and some corydoras#but the betta fish was first w my cousins old fishbowl#it makes me feel kinda sick now remembering it#like bettas are smart and need room to swim and play#not with other fish tho like they need fish sudoku or smth#super cruel to do to a fish like imagine being stuck in your room#with no entertainment and also they’ve turned off the air circulation#and they give you a bucket to go in that starts to stink to keep in it#this is an anti fish cruelty and anti fishbowl blog

Agonising over when to get another Betta for this tank ... I know in my head I should do it sooner than later because the longer I leave it the less choice I have when it comes to the current stock my store has but ...
I'm still ripped up over Fish Karlach's death. I had her for such a short time and I still miss her, and I'm not sure my tank is in the clear. Another Corydora, a more mature one too, passed away but I noticed this one developing a problem around the same time the issue with the Betta started, and after a chat with my shop bought stronger medicine since what I was using probably wasn't cutting it - but I think in the end that was just too much for her. She was on the way out and I probably could have saved her if I went for help sooner but couldn't really do much while waiting to be clear of COVID (absolutely shit timing btw).
I was looking at the females at the shop on that day and just ... I didn't want them. I wanted her back. I know it's just my extremely bad luck, I did just about everything right with the knowledge I had available at the time and literally dealing with COVID, but it just hurts when like, I know there are betta fish out there living in unheated, unfiltered shitty, tiny tanks with plastic plants still live whereas mine, in a carefully managed heavily planted tank had to die. It's not fair.
What also sucks is with this shipment at the store, all the females are just marbles- maybe even from the same spawn and I'm straight up allergic to that gene because I know of its high risk for tumors. I generally don't want a marble. At all. But unfortunately all the other non-marble, specific-type fish are all Males, which I think would be more likely to have a behavioural issue in a community tank considering all the females are still stocked together so they're used to other fish already. I don't really have much in the way of other options unless I take a near 2hr drive way north of my city but even then fish stocking in Western Australia just plain sucks.
Maybe I'll wait a week. Idk. But pretty sure the methalyne blue that went in the tank will have killed off any remaining bacteria (what was theorised to be the cause) kicking around in there. I definitely know there are no parasites, since that treatment ran for like 2 weeks. Not really wanting to do a full course of methalyne blue though since I could tell some of my plants weren't liking it, and the one fish I was treating for died quickly anyway. Still a decent amount in there, just less. Probably need two more water changes to clear it.
I need to move on but goddamn I don't think I could deal with another sick fish.
#kerytalk#fish nonsense#ventposting#I don't want to think its the store but I'm developing trust issues#but its the considered the best in our state so idfk man#all my water parameters were constantly pristine#if there was an ammonia spike setting it off it cleared so fast I couldn't see it#I use the master kit too#even the guy at the store was stumped#figured out i was probably using the wrong med the whole time and the others i had on hand weren't strong enough but#literally no idea what went wrong here#at this point the tank has had literally EVERY kind of medicine in it for a week at some point#ammonia spike from shifting substrate a bit during a water change? no idea#also test my water temp every time before putting new water in#everyone else is fine btw im just down to 4 corydoras now#the fact its the disabled and runty one still kicking is really something#if any were to go I'd have expected them but NOPE#they do have male samurai's though#is this my sign to grab one and call it johnny silverfish?

”Support your local fish store! Small businesses deserve your support more than big box stores!” means absolutely nothing when the only one near you keeps selling sickly fish that die in your cycled tank less than 24 hours after buying them, just for the record.
#i feel sick#saturday afternoon I bought 6 guppies and two gouramis#when I woke up Sunday the two prettiest guppies were dead and when I got home from church two more had died#then today when I got home from work one of the gouramis had died too#two years ago I bought a bunch of corydora catfish from them and the whole shoal was dead within a couple weeks#but the betta I got from them was the healthiest fish I ever had (Aurora) so I decided to give them one more chance#I’m just really upset right now#all I wanted was a community tank and it’s never worked out for me#I’ve got some other crap going on right now and this isn’t helping#pet death tw#I’m only going back to the lfs for supplies from now on since they keep medication in stock and our closest chain store doesn’t

::I suppose not. A pet is a big responsibility to simply place on another without warning.:: Tarn shared his Valkyrie's sentiment, but he was perhaps less concerned about the logistics of caring for a pet when he had comrades and tower staff to temporarily lend such responsibility to.
::No, it was not, but you are correct - its best chance is to remain with us. The Division has the Pet.:: They should really find a better name for the spark-eater. ::And Gyrodyne has a gaggle of desert organics. We have Orb, but perhaps you'd like a pet you can touch.:: Tarn was quite certain neither Pharma nor Orb would like Pharma to touch it.
::I shall search for a transparent box.:: That shouldn't be difficult. The tankformer sent a ping with an attached text to the tower staff's general comm.s requesting one. ::I assume it will require sustenance and a soft place to rest.:: He paused, frowning as he struggled to surmise what else a cybersnake might need. ::A structure to climb and perch on, maybe.::
::Someone really has no idea what appropriate gifts should be.:: The jet didn't sound thrilled over the comms, but decided not to comment on it further. What was done was done and it would be unfair for the cybernetic creature to simply leave it or give it away.
::It doesn't sound like it was a matter of principle when it comes to this one, yet I guess it has nowhere else to go. Am I correct?:: And he could guess Tarn had appropriate funds to provide it with anything that a cybersnake might need. Ah, right.
::What do cybersnakes require? Except a proper designation and enclosure. A box seems crude, unless made of transparent material.::
#//orb has some tankmates too LMAO#//basically alien corydoras catfish#//to help sweep up any leftover food~#nonmaleficence#ic

FISH ≠ HUMAN
genre. fluff. sickfic. warnings. reader is sick (only headache/nausea is mentioned). donghyun is trying his best </3 pairing. leehan x fem!reader. wc. 423. request. no. a/n. written just quickly for @blue-jisungs bcuz whenever my friends are sick i feel compelled to write them sickfics bcuz like well... they deserve it :( so i hope this makes you feel a bit better and get well soon my baby <33
“You don’t think that… fish antibiotics would work, would they?” You heard your boyfriend call out from the bathroom, shuffling through the cabinets for the medication that he swore he had. You wanted to laugh, but that would lead to another coughing fit and you really couldn’t handle that right now.
“I’m not a fish, Donghyun.” You mumbled quietly, closing your eyes again.
“What was it that you said you needed? Ibuprofen? I only have fish ciprofloxacin, though…” He muttered the last part quietly, taking one last onceover of the shelf before giving up. “I think I’ll have to go pick something up at the store. Do you need anything else? Anything I can do before I go?” He asked a little awkwardly, scratching the back of his neck.
It was clear that your boyfriend had no idea how to treat human sickness once it proved to be different than treating his fishes. He knew what to do if one of his corydoras had fallen ill— isolate the fish, clean the water regularly with antibiotics and methylene blue when needed, even apply some topical disinfectants when needed. But when it came to his girlfriend, he was almost clueless.
He knew the basics; making sure you got lots of sleep and drank water or tea. But he didn’t have any medication to give you or any other expertise in the area. You were lucky that Donghyun didn’t have a busy schedule for the next couple of days.
“Just get the ibuprofen… my head is killing me. Maybe some ginger tea? My nausea still hasn’t gone away.” You asked softly, and Donghyun nodded.
He crouched down, feeling your forehead again. He placed his other hand on his own forehead, trying to differentiate the two, but from his furrowed confused eyebrows, you were guessing he couldn’t tell. You pushed his hand away, urging him silently to go out to the store.
“Right, sorry.” He frowned. He kissed your forehead quickly before leaving, promising to be back with medication, tea, and anything else he could find at the store.
You sighed once you heard the front door close, your eyes drifting over to the fish tank in the room, watching the little creatures swim around in their seaweedy home. You smiled. You knew your boyfriend was trying his best, and you appreciated his willingness to get you what you needed. He cared about you just as much as he cared about his fish— but he still had a lot to learn about taking care of another human.

preliminary aquarium plant haul..! Trying to get all-red/orange/yellow foliage for my green alien betta + kubotai rasbora tank! Might pick up more on round two, depending on how things look. I have my eyeballs peeled for some red cryptocoryne albida...at worst, I can order that locally online. It's a native plant to these areas, so it's not super difficult to obtain. [I am also dying for some red tiger lotus and red root floaters, but I have literally never seen them here...so I don't know if they exist in the local hobby at all]. I have to wait for the tank stand to arrive in a day or two before I can do anything with the 20g anyway.
[The green ferns and anubias plants are for the other tank, which will primarily host corydoras, khuli loaches, and (hopefully) threadfin rainbows]
oouhhh it's nice to feel so excited about this hobby again!!

Can u do a leehan imagine where he likes fish and he finally found someone that likes fish too
Waahhh he's so cute
Through the Glass
group: boynextdoor
pair: leehan x gn!reader
genre: chance encounter, fluff
word count: 579
content: just cute shy fluff
a/n: i love pretty shy boys, he's a sweetie
Leehan's eyes followed the small fish as they floated around the tank, a content smile on his face. This always happened, he'd come to the pet store to buy food and chemicals for his fish and get distracted by the ones in store. He'd be lucky to leave the store that day without a new one.
Admiring each tank as he walked through the aisles, his eye focused on the tank at the very end, the tank that he loved the most. He stopped in front of it, leaning over to peer in with a wide smile.
“Corydoras!” He exclaimed, his ears immediately perking up to another voice that overlapped his as he spoke. Looking straight through the glass of the tank, he made eye contact with you, leant over admiring the fish in the same way.
You smiled at him, just a smile a stranger would give to another stranger, but he felt his face flush. He wasn't used to interacting with strangers, let alone strangers that were so pretty.
If the smile wasn't enough, he watched in awe as you looped around the side of the tank, coming to stand right next to him.
“I've always wanted some of my own but…my apartment is too small for a good tank.” You chuckled shyly, placing a hand on the glass and letting your gaze follow the small brown fish in front of you.
Leehan's mind was in overdrive, like every ridge of his brain was working to find a response to this stranger suddenly talking to him. After a short moment of shuffling through seemingly programmed responses, he finally forced a few words out of his mouth.
“I-I have some…”
The way you lit up at him as soon as the words processed in your brain made his heart stutter in the same way his mouth did, a feeling he wasn't quite familiar with.
“Really?? Jealous! How many?” You exclaimed, maybe a little too loud for the small space you two were in.
This time, his mouth moved faster than his brain and he blurted something out before really considering it. “A-a few.”
You stared at him for a moment, doe eyed and thoughtless before breaking into a wide smile and cute giggle, a giggle that once again penetrated his heart for no good reason.
“Is that code for ‘too many’?” You giggled through your words, bringing a hand up to cover your mouth slightly. His eyes dilated and his heart throbbed for the 3rd time, no sign that it was going to stop.
Suddenly, it was as if any guard he'd put up had completely vanished, and he let out a chuckle in sync with your giggles. You felt a flutter in your stomach, realising how handsome he really was, especially now he was smiling. Your smile only grew watching him fight short and shy giggles, and you didn't even notice how strangely attracted to him you felt despite knowing absolutely nothing about him.
He looked down at you, finally breaking away from his giggles and allowing his eyes to meet yours properly. He'd never felt so comfortable with a stranger, so comfortable that he wanted to put in the effort to be more than just a stranger.
“I didn't catch your name…” He muttered, eyes already positively smitten with the sight of you in front of him.
What you two didn't know was that this chance encounter would become a lot more meaningful than it seemed.

40 gallon long update~
Everything is going well in this tank apart from the odd bit of algae here and there.
The new pearl gourami is getting on nicely. Though it is a bit picky and will only eat flakes. He is quite shy and is still nervous when I come up to the tank. Hopefully, he will get used to me soon!
The bamboo shrimp is growing, too! I feed it some crushed up flakes and the powder from my rapashy.
The old dominant harlequin rasbora, who got his nose torn off in a fight, is doing well. He's eating fine, and there appears to be no infection going on. So I think he's okay.
Chiggy, my peppered corydoras that was born deformed, is doing good, too. She doesn't come out much, preferring to chill amongst the Val with the other corys.
Big Mama is still big. I'm still hoping she'll give me some eggs soon, but it's been a while since I've seen any breeding action from them.
The otocinclus and siamese algae eater are doing well, too! Doing their jobs and keeping the tank tidy~

Daily fish fact #732
Sterba's corydoras!
Like other corydoras catfish, these fish have a pretty unique way of reproducing: a male and a female will form a "T-shape", with the female's head resting between the pectoral fins and body of the male. The male releases some sperm, and the female moves it to her pelvic fins, which form a kind of "basket". The female Sterba's cory will then lay a single egg, places it in her pelvic fin basket, and swims off to place the now fertilised egg in a suitable safe spot. Then the cycle repeats until all eggs are fertilised!
