African Wild Dog and Spotted Hyena! Both matriarchal, both live in groups, both rivals to another, but one's bulkier one's slender, one's a canine, one's distantly related to cats.
Aiming to do more animal art and other art studies, to improve my skills and one day work on nature related projects :] Doing one illustration, one sticker sheet to go with them. Studywise, some bits are off here and there like. My tendency to give angry animals a "gator mouth" look, and that an on-edge hyena would have her tail curled. But all a learning processss
#watercolor#african wild dog#hyena#animals#animal art#nature#nature illustration#like i love giant converting robos but i also like wanting to be hireable some day idk LOL#also i genuinely like drawing animals and learning about them. if life was different and favorable id be working w them actually

more working on kaisas redesign w smth quick from a work page, i actually like where im starting to get w her tho im unsure abt the colors (smth ive struggled with in her redesign this whole time). tried out striped hyena/african wild dog today instead of just an awd. i was going to try going back to big cat if it didnt work but i do like this for now so gonna sit with it and try some more color ideas. nice to repurpose some of the green shades from an earlier redesign idea from last year, cuz a few ppl mentioned liking the greens. i rarely work with greens so i was a little daunted but you can never go wrong with using them as accent colors instead of base colors
#my art#ocs#furry#anthro#hyena#striped hyena#african wild dog#painted dog#i like this one cuzit feels like shes actually got personality n energy or at least one i vibe with a little more#than prev attempts at redesigning#still RLY unsure abt the lighter colors but both species have lighter colors and i wanted to incorporate both recognizable markings#from both species inher in some way

lily with 🧡🍁👁️🗨️
THANK YOUUUU as a token of my gratitude I give u a sneak peek of a WIP of her at the end of the post! 🧡 Physical touch good or bad?: Lilly has never been used to physical touch, so it’s simultaneously something she craves and something she’s a bit uncomfortable with. She’ll probably never be a super touch-y person, but she does enjoy it when her peers are physically affectionate with her. Adults less so, she thinks they’re being disingenuous at best and potentially creepy at worst. That’s what happens when you aren’t actually growing up in a stable, loving home environment!
🍁 Favorite season?: Spring! It’s pretty, it’s mild, it’s refreshing. She finds winter depressing and the holidays stressful, so when spring arrives it’s like releasing a breath you didn’t realize you were holding. She enjoys seeing everything come back to life, it really helps fuel her creativity and her sense of hope~
👁️🗨️ Eye contact good or bad?: Lilly can do sort of “normal”/conversational eye contact just fine, but the moment a conversation gets serious, or if the other person is making prolonged eye contact, she can’t do it. It makes her extremely uncomfortable! She’s had to deal with so many adults staring at her (new foster homes, case workers, etc), she finds it condescending or fake nice at best, objectifying at worst.
And now here is a WIP of the gal herself :3
#ocs#Lilly#i love her thank u for giving her some love#african wild dog#african painted dog#painted dog

Spectember/Spectober 2024 #09: Big Bad Wild Dogs
@poshtearexdoodles asked for "African wild dogs evolved to fill the larger pack animal niche of lions":
Although in this particular timeline the endangered and fragmented wild painted dogs in Africa didn't survive far past modern times, that wasn't the final extinction of the species – captive groups persisted, and after the [REDACTED] of humans an escaped population managed to carve out a niche for themselves in the grasslands of southern North America.
Their most notable descendant is Megainolycos poshtearexi. At nearly 1m tall at the shoulder (~3'3") it's one of the largest canids to ever exist, comparable to present-day lions in size and general ecology, with short thick bone-crushing jaws convergent with those of hyenas.
It also retains the complex variable coat coloration of its ancestors, with each individual having a unique disruptive pattern of black, white, and brown blotches.
Much like its ancestors it's a highly social pack predator specialized for endurance hunting. Along with some surprisingly horse-like limb ligament morphology, its feet now sport hoof-like nails rather than claws, and it pursues prey over long distances to the point of exhaustion – mainly targeting the larger ungulates across its prairie habitat such as hogs, horses, bovids, and deer.

Late last year I found some of S. Florida's tiny Schizomida whiptail scorpions and brought one home to my isopod enclosure. She still poking around in there!
Just a tiny wild dog with the usual number of legs, running at the feet of African elephants (also with the usual number of legs)🥹

The Best News of Last Week - September 11, 2023
Sorry for not sending last week's issue as I got covid again :/ I passed it, so here's the best things that happened last week :)
1. The IRS plans to crack down on 1,600 millionaires to collect millions of dollars in back taxes
The IRS announced on Friday it is launching an effort to aggressively pursue 1,600 millionaires and 75 large business partnerships that owe hundreds of millions of dollars in past due taxes. The newly announced tax collection effort will begin as soon as October. “We have more hiring to do,” Werfel said. “It’s going to be a very busy fall for us.”
2. The NGO African Parks announced it would purchase the world’s largest population of privately owned white rhinos
Africa’s beleaguered rhinos have been thrown a significant lifeline with the announcement that nearly 2,000 semi-wild rhinos owned by South African rhino breeder John Hume will be “rewilded” into reserves across South Africa and other parts of the continent over the next 10 years.
3. Mexico supreme court decriminalizes abortion across country
Mexico’s supreme court has unanimously ruled that state laws prohibiting abortion are unconstitutional and violate women’s rights, in the latest in a series of victories for reproductive rights activists across Latin America.
Wednesday’s ruling came two years after the court ordered the northern state of Coahuila to remove sanctions for abortion from its criminal code, a decision which prompted a tortuous state-by-state process of legal battles. So far 12 of Mexico’s 31 states have decriminalized the procedure.
4. The first human organ created inside an animal opens the door to manufacturing ‘spare parts’ for people
It is a historic image. A team of researchers in China has successfully generated a blueprint of a human organ in another animal for the first time. The experiment, conducted with humanized kidneys in pig embryos, represents a step toward the still-distant dream of using other mammals as source of organs for transplants.
5. Study Shows a Single Dose of Psilocybin's Astonishing Impact on Depression and Could Change Medical Treatments of Mental Health Forever
Psychedelics are making a comeback, and this time, they're dressed in the respectable garb of clinical research. Recent studies have reignited interest in these substances, particularly psilocybin, the active compound in magic mushrooms, as a potent treatment for major depressive disorder (MDD).
6. Missing cat reunited with owner after it disappeared during Alaska flooding
Twenty-six days after he went missing, an adorable black and white cat named Leo has been reunited with his family. Brave Leo went missing after historic glacial flooding swept away his home and all his owner's belongings.
7. Dogs perform Mozart with orchestra in Denmark
youtube
A classical music festival in Copenhagen, Denmark, has opened with some canine additions to the orchestra.

Here it is, the final chunk of [Weretober], with my poor guy Tim who was getting put through the body horror ringer! Despite the torment I put one of my favorite guys through, at least Ratman was having a blast during it all.
I can't believe after failing twice, I actually finished a full 31 days of a daily October challenge! I'm extremely proud of myself for putting out a fully colored piece every day!
Thank you guys for joining me on this journey and Ratman will be sure Tim gets some much needed relaxation after this whole ordeal GKFMKLFD
(Prompts #23-31 in order: Dragon -> Mule -> African Wild Dog -> Dinosaur (Styracosaurus) -> Fox -> Regional Gryphon (Loon/Lynx) -> Mammoth -> Reptile (Alligator Snapping Turtle) -> Elemental (Radiation) + Bonus Sketches under cut)
Oops, all thumbnails again!
Couple different poses for the dragon prompt! The ONLY thing I knew was that he NEEDED a thagomizer. Also I don't think I've like. Ever drawn a for-real traditional dragon up until this point HIOLKJDFDL:
For some reason, I was having THE hardest time with figuring out a pose for the Mammothman, I don't know WHAT the issue was:
For the reptile prompt, I actually had a few ideas. My first thought was komodo dragon, turtle, or chameleon, but ultimately I narrowed it down to alligator snapping turtle or frilled lizard, and WELL you can see which I went with:

For wild African tribes, horned cattle have always been a major treasure, and the Dog also has his own herd of cows and goats that he herds through his lands. People that considered him a deity may well have given him various offerings in an attempt to call him into their clan for a blessing. Thus his horned cattle increased or decreased if he decided to give away some of his cows or goats.
Even Kaang himself can't say exactly how many heads his herd numbers, but the trick is that his livestock isn't exactly alive. In African mythology there are usually two worlds - the world of the living and the world of spirits. However, according to some beliefs, the spirits of the dead can stay in the world of the living and harm their own family if they are buried incorrectly. And the Kaang's herd is also at about the same intermediate stage, being neither living nor dead.
But at the same time cattle do not harm anyone, and moreover do not exhaust the land in the usual sense of the word. They are also not always visible to mortals, so sometimes it may seem that a whole herd is coming with the Dog, and sometimes only single individuals. However, he can also summon them to the world of the living and put them under the care of the clans. They are no different from normal animals in this respect, though humans would obviously be particularly protective of them.
The Wolf in the last comic considered the killed goat to be a soul that could go to rebirth (in his afterlife, sheep play a similar role), which didn't make Dog look good in front of him either.
This is in reference to why Wolf was basically angry about it. It would be strange if he resented killing a goat for food. Rather, the topic of spirituality was raised here, in which if Wolf intervenes, it is only indirectly. The Dog, on the other hand, has no boundaries, all are two sides of the same coin. It's all a matter of perspective (Hi, Luteces)

i am so. tired. of those stupid videos that are like "this mother dolphin brought a man a fish every day because he followed her to where her baby was trapped in a net and saved it, earning the mother dolphin's trust and respect for the rest of their lives" or whatever
and then if you pay attention to the video it's like a dude's hand taking a fish from a bottlenose dolphin, then a clip of a dude with different hands following a spinner dolphin, followed by voice over about the "baby dolphin" over video of a lady freeing an adult hector's dolphin (which are small, like 3 feet long) from a net, and then a closing clip of an adult striped dolphin carrying a fish near a baby striped dolphin
there are videos of similar things with horses and tigers and just about any creature you can think of all over the internet, and it's always like, some unbelievably sappy story about a creature using video footage that doesn't even match the narration if you know a lot about animals or have a detective's mind. But the average person online doesn't see a white shark and then a mako shark as wildly different sharks, or a video about a crow that uses footage of a raven as a glaring inconsistency.
but i do. and i loathe these videos
first of all, if you're going to tell fictional stories, i'm all for it, but SAY they're fictional. Second of all, don't show a bunch of wild inaccuracies, like, don't say a baby shark and then show an adult leopard shark just because it's small. 3rd of all, don't give people hugely misleading expectations of what they can expect to find in nature. That's shitty at best and could be downright dangerous.
And lastly, there are so many interesting and important stories that are REAL that you could be telling! Just do ten minutes of fucking research! There are stories that deserve to be told!
Talk about Solo the African Wild Dog, tell the story of Titus the Gorilla King, show people Cristina Zenato and the shark Foggy Eye, remind people of Pocho the huge crocodile and his human friend Chito, let people know the fate of Romeo the Alaskan wolf ... there are many stories that could be told without betraying the trust of the public, without showing the wonder of nature through a liar's lens.
anyway. i hate it.
