Honestly the reason the "love triangle" in lbfad works so well for me is easily because it's not completely lazy?

So many love triangles in romances are very clear cut and you can typically tell who is going to "win". Usually one pairing is written with far more care than the other, and for sure we get that with Dongfang Qingcang and Xiao Lanhua. They get the meat of the story, but regardless Changheng and Xiao Lanhua do have a really nice chemistry. When you watch them together you can easily see the alternate universe where this is a story about /their love/ There's just this genuine sweetness that aches from their early scenes together that makes it a little bit painful to watch- like I love.... the love between The Fairy and The Devil, I do. They have such great chemistry and they're so, so fun together-The difference of this cold and dark and brooding entity and the little flower spirit that charmed him is everything I could ask. It was never a question that I wanted to see them together in the end but there was still moments with Changheng that just made me go Oh, maybe it really will be him and her in the end...

then of course it doesnt happen. And I'm so happy to see my favourite duo together in the end, because they are just so good together, but its a little sad, too. I don't want Changheng to sit around with his heartbroken, I feel kind of terrible for him... and god if that isn't a better love triangle than I ever anticipated.

We have spent the last couple days in LBFAD discord matching up all the major characters to what kind of cat they would be. Their catsona? Anyway this is vital information and we decided we must compile it.

Dongfang Qingcang:

Xiao Lanhua:

(I'm pretty sure this is a cat on douyin and her name might be Luna? If so, that's appropriate.)

Shangque:

Not a cat!! He's just so clearly a dog. In specific, we decided on a Rottweiler because they have somewhat of a scary reputation, but naturally he is sweet and loyal and just lets all the cats ride on him.

Changheng:

We decided on a tortie, but then it was like 'what about a split faced tortie because duplicity?'

Xunfeng:

i think that the thing i love most about lbfad is that the women are so compelling. like. the cast is fairly evenly split (which can be a surprise tbh) but all of the major characters have really compelling lives and storylines! xiao lanhua of course as the main character, but then chidi nuzi being the god of war. her whole sacrifice thing. danyin being the initial low stakes antagonist and then kind of being on friendly terms and her whole quest to become the next god of war. jieli just wanting to run her shop scamming people but going along with xlh because theyre genuinely good friends. the women of cangyan hai. sansheng and siming dont have a ton of story but the little hints are COMPELLING! they all have their own rich internal lives That Dont Revolve Around Men. truly lbfad is one for the ages. and for the lesbians.

If the bride's champion wins it's a good omen of fertility, bountiful harvests, and wealth. In the past, this meant someone had to die, as a sacrifice for the omen to come to pass.

Fortunately, modern Moon Tribe weddings had long since ended the sacrificial tradition, and fights between champions are largely staged as symbolic tradition. But unfortunately for Danyin, the chosen champion for her sister Jieli, she has to be the one that loses the fight against Shangque's chosen champion. This wouldn't be so bad if Shangque's chosen champion didn't also happen to be the most insufferable, spoiled, prideful excuse of a failed coup that has walked the three realms: Xunfeng.

Or: Danyin’s longest, worst day ever turns out to be the best.

Takes place a few centuries after the war against Tai Sui is won, and before Xiao Lanhua/Goddess Xiyun revives Dongfang Qingcang.

Danyin and Changheng ending up as bros is actually so good??? I wish more dramas had m/f besties.

also uhhh Danyin gender moments??? Like she's presented as this beautiful fairy but it's never been about being a woman for her. Danyin is about competence and hated Orchid at first because she's clumsy and her power is weak. She's a fangirl of Chidi and originally wanted to become the next God of War. Actually, I would love that for her??? CH is a wifeguy and I never really thought he was suited for the job

the way CH IMMEDIATELY went to the mortal world after the war ended tells me exactly what I suspected: he's never felt comfortable being immortal. He wants to wander. Maybe he'll fall in love with a mortal and have to fight his brother. I will always create scenarios where Changheng has to fight Yun Zhong. I want to fight him.

Actually, if DFQC returned, that means that Orchid/Xiyun can become his Moon Queen and presumably move back to Canyang Sea. Before she goes, maybe she can pardon Siming and her husband and bring them back to Shuiyuntian? Fate has already been altered by a lot of people and she let them lol. Just let her move back into Shuiyuntian.

Can we make Xunfeng an ambassador to Shuiyuntian while we're at it? Now that I think about it, CH/Xunfeng would be HILARIOUS. DFQC would be like "first you fall in love with my wife and now my BROTHER? wtf is wrong with you???"

Rewatching ep. 32 of Love Between Fairy and Devil and making bad and inaccurate jokes to conceal my pain

So we learn that DFQC has created a dream world using his primordial spirit and the more he remains in that world, the more likely he is going to die by depleting his spirit. Talk about the dangers of daydreaming

Shangque, Xunfeng and the two other rulers of the Cangyan Sea give him some of their primordial spirit to help him last longer

Ronghao and Chidi practicing sword fighting in a bamboo forest. Chidi notices a difference in the way Ronghao fights. She discerns a killing intent. Girl, if you only knew

In the meantime, Changheng realizes that the fate Danyin saw in the tree regarding his wedding with Xiao Lanhua hasn’t come true. Soooo? It’s reincarnation time, baby. Danyin cries because again she loses her chance to be with Changheng (or at least that’s what I understood?? I could be totally wrong, which I am 98,9% of the time)

DFQC is with Xiao Lanhua in his dream, talking about the fate leaves. Omg Xiao Lanhua is soooo cute. I miss her already

“Promise me that you will never leave me.” *taking deep breaths*

Changheng joins Xunfeng and Shangque in the room where they keep DFQC and I see the tension the fics talk about between him and Xunfeng. Ok, ok, I get it

Changheng goes into DFQC’s dream to warn him and help him escape

DFQC is haunted by the tree mirror and the prophecy of Xiao Lanhua getting married to Changheng even in his dream world. At that precise moment, Changheng materializes in front of him.

So Changheng tells him that everything around him is fake, a product of his imagination. Xiao Lanhua is dead but hey, you know, we can bring her back. He asks him to escape the dream, wake up so that they can save her. DFQC struggles, he doesn’t know what’s true and what’s not

And then, Xiao Lanhua comes asking DFQC where he is going. See? DFQC says, she is alive and she is my wife. Changheng insists that this is not real, she is not alive and he has to wake up. Of course, DFQC refuses and pushes Changheng out of his dream

Xiao Lanhua hugs him and makes him remember his promise that he will never leave her

Aaaaand here comes one of the most heartbreaking moments in the drama. Arbiter Hall begins to disintegrate piece by piece. He has decided to wake up, but Xiao Lanhua is begging him to stay. She tells him she is real. Yet he has to resist his dying wish to stay with her. I dare you to watch this scene without crying.

“If you bring me back to life, I will have to marry someone else. Do you want to see me marry someone else?” My heaaaaart! So his options are to either stay with the dream Xiao Lanhua and die in the process or bring her back to life and have to see her eventually marry Changheng. I can’t

Xiao Lanhua crying as everything around is slowly being torn apart is traumatic to say the least

The way he holds her and cries. And then, she is gone. Once more. He had to lose her from his arms twice

Xunfeng feels guilty because he handed Xiao Lanhua the sword. Oh well. And Shangque learns that Jieli never took Xiao Lanhua outside the Moon Palace and also that he was poisoned and she saved him

Chidi realizes Ronghao has been keeping the truth from her, so she takes him to the immortals to be judged. And asks them to punish her as well? Crazy stuff

Yungzhao is like, noooo we need the God of War so stop the nonsense. But Ronghao has to go to jail. He is ok though just as long as Chidi is safe

Dieyi hands Jieli to her father under the condition to save Ronghao. Jieli’s father resists her blackmail, but when he sees Jieli, he forgets everything. Danyin is not happy with having a new sister

DFQC heads to the Ruins of Myriad Heavens where there is another replica of the Arbiter Hall (I have lost count of all the replicas, I just take it for granted now that wherever DFQC is, there has to be an Arbiter Hall)

Excuse me as I am staring at DFQC’s costume

Lady Arbiter arrives and she commands her dragon to beat DFQC up. Whoa there lady

DFQC doesn’t defend himself at all and takes the hit with dignity, which is something that I guess impresses and surprises Lady Arbiter

So Lady Arbiter tells DFQC that a part of Xiao Lanhua’s spirit remains in him, so there is hope to resurrect her *clapping in joy*

Then we are reminded again that the wedding between XLH and Changheng that DFQC has seen in the mirror is destined to happen and nothing can alter it. Poor DFQC…he has to resurrect her only to see her getting married to another man

One episode without Xiao Lanhua and it feels so wrong. I want her back!

I’m so glad you liked Xiao Lanhua/orchid as a character when you watched Lbfad. She can be A Lot at the beginning, but she gets so much crazy hate from certain parts of the internet. I feel her development is as impactful as it is because of how she starts out. And imo Dfqc starts out as super immature too, and their relationship is good because they grow together

I loved her! She was so adorable in the first few episodes. Maybe people are missing that she's supposed to be the fairy-equivalent of a teenager? Same with Danyin as far as I can tell. They are still young by fairy standards. Orchid is also crushingly lonely and everyone bullies her, her personality made sense to me. I didn't mind her voice at all either.

Her journey from an insecure, unimportant fairy to the possible queen of the Moon Tribe to the Goddess Xi Yun was very interesting to me and had so much character development.

Dongfang Qingcang does start out immature, but I guess people like "ruthlessly murderous" better than "teenage fan girl" as a starting position?
