Honestly the reason the "love triangle" in lbfad works so well for me is easily because it's not completely lazy?

So many love triangles in romances are very clear cut and you can typically tell who is going to "win". Usually one pairing is written with far more care than the other, and for sure we get that with Dongfang Qingcang and Xiao Lanhua. They get the meat of the story, but regardless Changheng and Xiao Lanhua do have a really nice chemistry. When you watch them together you can easily see the alternate universe where this is a story about /their love/ There's just this genuine sweetness that aches from their early scenes together that makes it a little bit painful to watch- like I love.... the love between The Fairy and The Devil, I do. They have such great chemistry and they're so, so fun together-The difference of this cold and dark and brooding entity and the little flower spirit that charmed him is everything I could ask. It was never a question that I wanted to see them together in the end but there was still moments with Changheng that just made me go Oh, maybe it really will be him and her in the end...

then of course it doesnt happen. And I'm so happy to see my favourite duo together in the end, because they are just so good together, but its a little sad, too. I don't want Changheng to sit around with his heartbroken, I feel kind of terrible for him... and god if that isn't a better love triangle than I ever anticipated.

I'm rewatching Love Between Fairy & Devil... I forgot so much of this show, like Danyin sitting around in Changheng's body with ":3" all over her face. I love her

Siming tells Xiao Lanhua only love is not fate. And she tells Dongfang Qingcang that only he can defy Xiao Lanhua’s fate... BECAUSE HE’S THE ONLY ONE WHO LOVES HER MORE THAN HIS OWN LIFE! 

I knew that subconsciously he was the one willing to make the sacrifice to keep her from sacrificing herself, but the whole “defying destiny” piece doesn’t just happen because you want to change things. Changheng clearly wants to change it, but as usual fails to be bull-headed enough, or capable of thinking outside the box enough to do something to make it happen (poor guy, just hasn’t learned how to deal with things the way Dongfang Qingcang does). 

Changing fate requires the action to come from a place of deep, self-sacrificing love. (And honestly, being a little insane about the person you’re doing it for.)

That is also why Xiao Lanhua could interfere with Changheng’s fate in the beginning, even though her love was not of the romantic kind (as it turns out). And possibly why Danyin had influence to make their “second” wedding come true? Because her love for Changheng and her desire to save him at the cost of her own chance with him was, in a roundabout way, also love that required her sacrifice - though in her case, it wasn’t her life she laid down. 

Anyway, the consistency of the world-building continues to amaze me.

I have to pry myself off the computer for real but tomorrow will someone please talk to me about Love Between Fairy & Devil now that I've finally watched it a year after the rest of the internet, and how Fairy Danyin is the best character, and Danyin/Changheng is the most lesbian (and/or gnc)/gay solidarity ship ever, and I am so stunned that they textually ended with Danyin admitting her original thing for Gods of War is that she wanted to become one herself - i.e. there was some "idk if I want to be him or be with him" to her Changheng pining - and with her demonstratively labeling Changheng her xiongdi???????? They are bros in every lifetime!! And should go on Chidi/Danyin Changheng/Ronghao double dates!!!

Someone please talk about this with me.... tomorrow.

I know the fandom seems to lean towards shipping Danyin with Xunfeng, but personally I have a soft spot for like, centuries down the line, Danyin finally getting over Changheng just as he falls for her. Mainly because I think Changheng just continuing to fail at getting the girl would be funny, as would the role reversal of him pining and angsting over this crush on the God of War and wanting her attention but not being able to do anything about it. 

Also, consider Changheng showing up at Silent Moon Palace to avoid Danyin and Dongfang Qingcang being irritated because he didn’t want to deal with the man’s romantic angst the last time, he sure doesn’t want to deal with it now - but also this means the man is over his wife so maybe he should help? And Xiao Lanhua is absolutely on board, she wants her friends to be happy! (And if Danyin confessed to her in secret that she isn’t fully over it, she just wants to move on, then all the better.)

So anyway yeah, I finished watching Love Between Fairy and Devil and honestly it’s one of the best cdramas I’ve seen in ages. 

Like I’m not going to go feral over it like I did for The Untamed, but!!!! It was so good. Sure there were moments I thought were dragged out a bit too long, and until the last 10 eps or so I was only watching 2-3 episodes at a time, but Aaaaaaaaaa 

I’d try to put my thoughts into some kind of sensible commentary but tbh I should be going to sleep rather than poking at tumblr so I’ll summarise to: character development! Costumes! Setting! Plot! Everything was so good! And I love how like... everyone has their Reasons for doing stuff, their own agenda... nobody is doing things for Evil Bullshit (except Taisui) and just... this is the flavour I enjoy.

I love that Chengheng's mortal version is his polar opposite. They're foils, actually.

Chengheng is a righteous person, doing his duty well and diligently. He's earnest, poise, sincere of his intentions. But, he repressed his wants and feelings so much for duty and reputation; until it's too late.

If Chengheng is the Golden Child of the family, Xiao Run is the headache

Xiao Run is aloof, annoying, and a troublemaker. He didn't take things seriously and would rather indulge in pleasures than duties. He's impulsive, would not think twice to get anything they want.

It highlights more on their approach to XLH. Chengheng wants to stay away from her, to hide his feelings from everyone despite pining for her for centuries. Xiao Run just met her just once and now he's broadcasting to the whole fucking kingdom that he'll marry her.

And added to the fact that DFQC erased his memories of XLH in Xiao Run's head. But after that, him seeing a painting of her--that he havent met before--then he's already planning for marriage. Something Chengheng would not do.
