hinata: a deep dive (meta)
As it can be expected, many girls in Naruto have development that often takes some number of deep dives to find. Hinata is certainly no exception to this rule, but with this meta, my hope is that I can suss out some of that hidden development and her accomplishments and list them here.
Hinata: A troubled past
As many of us know from canon, Hinata's past was troubled and fraught with difficulties.Â
Ch. 102, when Hiashi is engaging the toddling Hinata in a spar and manifesting bloodlust during.
Ch. 78, wherein Hinata is officially disinherited from the main branch heirdom.Â
Growing up as the main heiress of the Hyuga clan, and eldest daughter of the main branch head, Hinata was under tremendous pressure from her father to exceed. Compared to even her younger sister, her junior by five years, Hiashi looked down upon her. In chapter 102, in the above panels, it could even be implied that Hiashi was enraged by her, pushing a young Hinata to the point that her uncle Hizashi tried to interfere, but was punished for it when he activated the clan's juinjutsu.
Yet, this wasn't the only hardship Hinata faced.Â
Ch. 102
When Hinata was three years old, while Kumogakure's Head Ninja had been visiting Konoha on matters of diplomacy at the declaration of an armistice between both villages, she was almost kidnapped by this self-same ninja. What would eventually be known as the Hyuga Affair in Kumogakure would result in Hizashi dying in exchange for acting as Hiashi's body double as to satisfy the then nullified demand for Hiashi and his Byakugan that the clan's juinjutsu destroyed in Hizashi upon his death.
First Databook, Head Ninja of Kumogakure (Scan & Translation)
This would go on to lead to a whole host of issues between Hinata and Neji that notably came to light during the Chunin Exams.
Ch. 78, where Lee explains it in more detail.
As we learn from the exposition of others in chapter 78, not only was there existing turmoil between the main and cadet branches, but that it manifested in the rookies' generation as Neji and Hinata's one-sided conflict; of Neji blaming the main branch for both his father's death and being consigned to being a proverbial slave to the main branch.
Ch. 80
And as Neji would go to to explain, all of the former would result in a girl bent and bowed by both the immense pressure of her clan, the strain of conflict in her own family, and the high expectations she couldn't yet meet. Neji even went on to describe it all in visceral detail during their preliminary fight.
Ch. 78
As we can see from chapter 78, Neji manages to ruthlessly disseminate Hinata's character just by examining her body language and reflecting on her past, and while much of it seems brutally true, it doesn't mean that it's the whole truth, either.
Hinata: Growing from her pain
Despite all the clear hardship that Hinata faced, that doesn't mean she did nothing to grow. As we come to see in much the same arc, she faced these challenges in her own way.
Ch. 79
Despite all the brutal things Neji said to Hinata, it wasn't enough to kill her confidence. Or, her courage and resolve to keep enduring. And, damn does she endure.
Ch. 79, when they engage in close, melee combat.
Ch. 79, when Kurenai reflects on the beginning of Hinata's changes.
Something I see criticized often about Hinata is that she's a hopeless fangirl much in the way Sakura supposedly was over Sasuke. However, something I think that should be clarified is that, coming from a nigh abusive home life that she did, Naruto was her source of hope. And frankly, I don't think it's a deficit to her character at all. Naruto helped inspired her, and her growth showed because of it.
Ch. 79
As shown near the fight's climax, Hinata keeps standing up and trying to fight despite how seemingly hopeless the situation is. Even though Neji had debilitated her with severe injuries, some borderline fatal, she kept relenting because of her admiration and inspiration she found in Naruto.Â
Ch. 98
And as it would show in the period after Hinata's recovery, she made the full extent of her admiration known; and in doing so, she speaks not as some obsessive fangirl, but a downtrodden girl thanking her greatest source of inspiration so she could rise above it. Something I don't think makes her obsessive at all.
But as the series would continue on, the fruits of this growth shows the most in the second part.
Hinata: The lioness of the Hyuga Clan
As the future would come to prove, Hinata did grow into the inspiration that Naruto gave her, enough to do the impossible and attempt to save the boy she loved from an impossibly powerful enemy.
Ch. 437, when Hinata faced off against Pein, one of the most powerful villains in the series after the likes of Madara, Obito, or Kaguya.
But, it went beyond that.Â
Ch. 540
Ch. 632
Ch. 526
As demonstrable throughout the war arc, by both her clan's reacceptance of her and fighting alongside Naruto, Hinata showed just how far she was willing to take a shared ideal in order to fight at the side of the one she loved and admired more than anything, that inspired her to be strong and endure.
Now, in terms of complete strength and excelling as a kunoichi, this brilliant meta by silalcarin proves that Hinata excelled in other ways, even more than her utterly gifted cousin, Neji.

Hinataâs fighting ability was found lacking by the Hyuuga Clan. But her latent potential is quite conspicuous, so development is to be expected in the future.

The kind and gentle dancing fighter with feelings for Naruto
Although she is a heir to the renowned Hyuuga Main House, she is full of compassion, and dislikes competition and fighting: such is Hinataâs personality. Currently, her father has given up of her, and she is assigned to difficult missions as a Genin. Even being in that dire situation hasnât broken her, she hasnât lost that kindness of hers, and thatâs because Naruto was there, inside her heart. And now, Hinata is strengthening herself, soundly and steadily.
Hinata is a shy and withdrawn person who canât do anything in front of her dear Naruto. Something sheâs been constantly wishing to change about herself.
Timidity and hesitation, unease and nervousness⌠An ebbing and flowing love story
[Attack]
Hinata is in love with Naruto, but regardless, she canât take a step forward. However, sheâs able to pluck up her own brand of courage sometimes, as proved by that âattackâ of hers. Because thatâs her Way of the NinjaâŚ?!
She canât even look Naruto in the eyes as she hands him the ointment to treat the injuries heâs received during the Chuunin exam, but sheâs put all her strength into thisâŚ!
[Naruto and Herself]
Thereâs a definite reason behind Hinataâs passion for Naruto. She wants âto become like himâ. Shackled by the strict laws of the Hyuuga clan, and further weakened by her inferiority complex towards her younger sister, Hinata is always seeking strength and power.
Hinata is never assertive about anything, something she tends to hate about herself.
When she was fighting Neji, no matter how many times she was struck down, she would think of Naruto and stand upâŚ!
Hinata admires and esteems Naruto. But he is totally clueless about those feelings.
The one she admires taught her about the courage to stand up!!
Chuunin Exam: Third Preliminary Test
[Her fight against Neji]
The time had finally come to fight against Neji, from the Branch House, and hater of the Main House. Hinata disliked conflict, despite which she fought desperately in order to change herself. But as expected, she was no match for Neji, whom people refer to as the strongest in the Hyuuga Clan. [Missing sentence]
Naruto is throwing taunts at Neji. Hinata is able to draw courage from his cheeringâŚ
A scene where she even fights on par with the great Neji. The blood of the Hyuuga also flows is Hinataâs veins!
But she yields before Nejiâs Gentle Fist, and gets wounded and beaten down several times overâŚ

Turn a pure heart into strengthâŚ
Hinata passively gave in to everything, but with the support of Narutoâs cheering, she had a fierce battle with Neji, and matured greatly. There is still a lot of her that is not sufficient as the child of the Hyuuga Main House, but indomitable strength is added to her original pure heart, and little by little, but steadily, Hinata progresses ahead⌠She wishes that she could move even one step closer towards the back of Naruto, her idolâŚ

Hinata Hyuuga The Sunflower Who Hid Love and Admiration for Naruto in Her Heart, and Bloomed Beautifully
Hinata was born as the eldest daughter of the Hyuuga clanâs main house. Having struggled since childhood with the pressure of being âthe next leader of a noble clan,â as well as with her own withdrawn nature, she admired Narutoâs âstrength,â and decided to adhere to his nindou. Now, having matured as a shinobi and as a woman, Hinataâs feelings for Naruto cause her to shake⌠Before: Caption of panel of near-beaten Hinata from chuunin exams: I never go back on my word. The heritage of the Hyuuga Clan, the white eyes that see through everything!!
The Hyuuga Clan is a distinguished family, and one of Konohagakureâs two brightest jewels, the other being the Uchiha Clan. The Kekkei Genkai that circulates within House Hyuuga is the Byakugan. Upon using Byakugan, the caster sees right through immediate obstacles, even catching a glance upon things situated remotely ahead of them.
But Byakugan possesses an even more astonishing ability. It can also distinguish the inner bodyâs acupuncture network through which chakra circulates, and the apertures through which it is released outside the body, the tenketsu. Because of that ability, the Hyuuga are praised as the clan which has the most outstanding ability. That said, this is also the reason why they have accumulated tragedies throughout their historyâŚ
When Byakugan is activated, it is so powerful it causes the veins around the casterâs eyes to protrude!
How exactly does chakra circulate inside the body If one has the power of the Byakugan, even such a thing can be understood just like that, with absurd ease.

Closing thoughts
As I've tried to list in detail, Hinata not only has a lot of in-depth characterization, development, and growth as a kunoichi and member of the Hyuga clan, but extreme promise as a character and love interest of the protagonist. Yet, there's far more to her than her relationships, which I hope I've shown here (even though this doesn't even touch on everything, by far)!

When and why do you think Madara gave up the dream of the village, or did he have it in the first place? Since its implied that Hashirama tired to make peace the second he became clan head only for Madara to refuse him until Izuna's death. Why do you think it took Madara so long to agree when he dreamt of it with Hashirama when they were young. Or do you think that he was just humoring Hashirama when they were young and never had that dream?
Ooh I have a lot of thoughts on this! Okay, so first of all I whole-heartedly believe Madara and Hashirama shared the same dream when they were young. Iâd even argue that Madara started to have it first. In Hashiramaâs flashbacks (which my god, I wish we had Madaraâs perspective on that so much) to me it seems like heâs frustrated with the fighting and the war but canât quite vocalize the idea of peace. Itâs when he meets back up with Madara and Madara tells him to trust someone you need to know their guts and presents that as the unlikely but ultimate way to make peace that Hashirama latches onto the idea and then they develop the idea for the village specifically together until it becomes their dream, and once Madara abandons it, becomes âonlyâ Hashiramaâs.
As for why Madara didnât agree immediately when he became clan head, I have different two different theories, and a whole lot of realisitc overlooked complications. The first and most bitter theory is at this point in the overall narrative the âUchiha are genetically pre-dispositioned to evilâ theme has picked up steam and the reincarnation reveal is right around the corner. To make Narutoâs ultimate triumph of âwinning Sasuke back to the side of goodâ the most meaningful, Hashirama and Madara (and Asura and Indra before them) had to fail by the narrative design. Naruto is the child of prophecy and the reincarnation of ninja jesus, heâs the Most Special right now. None of this is helped by the fact that we donât get Madaraâs side. We donât know why Madara refused peace. If that was explained, if Madara even referenced it in his fight with Hashirama I would be less bitter and more inclined to believe there was actual narrative weight in that decision. But itâs not and while I love part 1 baby Naruto with all my heart, ever since the child of prophecy plot point was brought up and all throughout the war arc I am most happy when we are not following him because the world bends to accommodate him as the mc more than usual at the detriment to other characters.
Now for a not bitter theory, with the scraps were given and a lot of guessing lol. Madaraâs decision not to accept peace immediately once he becomes clan head, should narratively tie into why he broke off his friendship with Hashirama in the first place. We know the river confrontation happened, but we donât know how the Uchiha discovered was meeting Hashirama, or their reaction to it. Personally, I love good dad Tajima, but realistically I think his reaction would be similar to Butsumaâs. Madara would be threatened with being labeled a traitor to the clan. However, the real crux for me would be Izuna. Izuna is Madaraâs main priority from what we can tell. If Tajima suggested, or threatened, that Madaraâs meetings with Hashirama would directly lead to Izunaâs death...I can see that being a greater fear for him. Neither Madara or Hashirama would want to be banished from their clans but the knowledge that his friendship with Hashirama was the cause of his brotherâs death would be the single worst outcome for Madara. Cue the actual river confrontation, with Tobirama and Izuna clashing and then both dads trying to kill the otherâs kid that was Madaraâs worst-case come true. I donât think he went into the confrontation with the intention of breaking his friendship with Hashirama. They both tried to leave early to prevent the confrontation after all. But when it happened and Madara was faced with that...he did the only thing he could think to do to protect his brother even at the cost of his own happiness. The agony of that choice was the Sharingan moment for me. From there it gets blurry but the way I see Madara is he felt he couldnât go back on that decision and he internalized it. He made it and getting close to Hashirama again, listening to him and accepting peace, would still ultimately lead to his brotherâs death. This could explain why after Izuna died, he gave it one last go and when he was defeated ultimately accepted peace. His worst case had come true. Izunaâs dead and, in a twist of fate, he died because Madara chose to not to accept Hashiramaâs friendship when he could.Â
The above is kind of my âmainâ theory, directly from canon explanation. It gets complicated by other ideas that werenât addressed at all, but would reasonably come up if the narrative was focused on this time rather than Hashiramaâs entire backstory being just that, a backstory. We know the Uchiha and Senju had been at war for generations and the overall terrible conditions of the Warring State Period as well as how ninja clans were hired as mercenaries...beyond that...thereâs not a lot. A major consideration to Madara not accepting peace should be the political climate. Were there multiple daimyos (I ask this because the Warring States period was analogous to Japanâs Sengoku period and there were multiple daimyos fighting for power. Who would have the money/need to hire multiple clans to fight against each other if there was just one?) was there just one? Madara is the leader of a clan but he canât just decide to do things if it would possibly jeopardize the Uchihaâs ability to work, get paid, and eat. Then you have the politics of the clans themselves. There were Uchiha defectors and they were at least willing to accept peace, but we get no indication about the clanâs changing attitude towards the Senju or peace. After being grievously injured, Izuna was still against it. There could have been a group that was completely anti-peace and a group that was pro-peace and how would Madara reconcile with that especially if he wasnât a beloved leader? I do think Madara as clan head could make the decision âweâre making peace with the Senjuâ but then forcing two enemy clans to cohabitate that hate each other...even if they were tired of war Madara would be risking his clanâs wellbeing on Hashiramaâs word. I think Madara could believe Hashirama but the rest of the Senju? Thatâs a different question altogether and raises itâs own concerns.Â
The concept of making peace and creating the village is a complicated matter, much more so than two boys declaring theyâll be the strongest so everyone has to listen to them. I really think this point in the narrative just kind of...had to exist with the way Kishi wrote the story esp with the upcoming Indra/Ashura parallels. Realistically there would have been a lot of reasons Madara couldnât immediately accept peace even if he wanted to. These could have been hinted at, but because I think the ultimate goals of the backstory was 1. to lay out Madaraâs villain origin and 2. to hint at Hashirama failed where Naruto will succeed and all of this has to be delivered as quickly and effectively as possible, those other possible reasons werenât explored. I would have liked a line or two of dialogue between Hashirama and Madara about this, especially whenever Madara mentions Konoha isnât his dream and ground it in realistic obstacles rather than âspace alien goddessâ will manipulating him for x amount of timeâ but...you know.
Hashirama and Madaraâs relationship was well developed and great, but Naruto suffers the mot imo when realistic longstanding problems come up, especially if theyâre problems caused by historical events or the current socio-political climate. The biggest evidence of this is...what were the great shinobi wars about? Why did they start? What were they fought over? When did they end? What were their consequences? Itâs...surprisingly hard to answer these vital questions and âwhy didnât Madara immediately accept peace?â ultimately falls into the same category for me.Â
This is all from Madaraâs perspective and tbh I could write a whole thing about why Hashirama was so gung-ho about immediate peace and the pro/cons of that but this is already way too long lol.

The (Stolen) Final, Tense, Climatic War arc: Rebuttal
Okay so a blogger by the name of Fairytail-whathesays has recently put out what I believe one of the most head scratching things Iâve read. Now Iâve known about this blogger and while I believe everyone is entiltled to their own opinion, I will say that his claims of Hiro Mashima ripping off Tite Kuboâs Bleach Thousand year blood war arc I find has many holes. And while I am unable to actually make a comment on said post and confront him directly thanks to being blocked by him, I will say this because someone linked this to me and I am here to say, you mr. whathesays are reaching!
Iâm going to tackle each and every point he brings up:
âThe premise. The final arc of each series consists of another civilizationâs emperor deciding to attack the main location and the heroes, starting off with a truly overwhelming, overkill number of soldiersâ
Umm okay⌠Thatâs not really ripping off anything. The fight between the soldiers of the Quincy and the random shinigami is played like an actual war with devastating results of their home being destroyed and many established characters caught up in the wave of attack. There really isnât a moment like that in FT except for up in the north, but that was not only later in the arc, but also we only got lip service of bargo being defeated by God Serena, August, and Jacob. But its neither played up like how Bleach did it with an actual war and the Alvarez first wave was defeated by the DS and Erza.
Itâs also a war arc, unless the heroes are going to declare war it really is going to follow a similar beat, but this isnât like with Naruto where we have characters fighting in battlefield separate from the main location. I donât really know what to tell you, but bad guy individual the central home of the hero is not a new concept.
âThe Sternritter. An elite group of incredibly, monstrously powerful elite soldiers and bodyguards to the emperor. Their Fairy Tail incarnations are the Spriggan Twelve, Zerefâs twelve bodyguards. â
Ummm again how is this a rip off. First of all if you are an emperor youâre going to have a select group of soldiers or bodyguards. Second, well if the leader of an organization having a group of baddies directly working for him the last arc counts as a rip off, then bleach ripped off Rurouni Kenshin, because Yukishiro Enshin had the six comrades. This isnât an uncommon practice for arcs to have one big villain and then a bunch of smaller characters loyal to them. If you just mean that they both happen to be emperors and these are their guards, it really doesnât make that much a difference when both series feature the technique of villain groups.
Maybe if all of the spriggans had a letter motif, then sure. But theyâre isnât even the same number of them. Youâre condemming an author, for using tropes. No one author owns a trope
âBloodman of the Spriggan Twelve is a ripoff not of any Sternritter, but of the Segunda Espada from one of the earlier arcs, Barragan Louisenbairn. Heâs a large, hulking demonic figure with a god complex and a fatalism idealogy, declaring himself the God of Death and possessing powers that make him nearly impervious to damage and able to win battles by decaying enemies to death with his mere presence alone, and both make their final move attempting to take their enemy down with them. Now, which one was I just talking about, Bloodman, or Barragan Louisenbairn?â
Okay but this doesnât exactly help your argument about the final arc being ripped off. Also where do you see Bloodman having Fatalism in personality? Heâs a generic FT svillain who wants to fight and kill with the only thing different being how he talks. Barragan at least has a character and youâre more pinning this rip-off on their similar power, but Barraganâs is all about decay, but Bloodman, uses only the anti-magic barrier particles and with alright steal life, but then you have to remember that he stops using this power in favor of the other curse, but Barragan just uses respira
âThe ultimate goal of the main antagonist. Yhwach desires to smash all of the worlds together and negate the laws of space, time, and death to create a world where death does not exist. Zerefâs ultimate goal, though only revealed at the end, was essentially the recreate the world through time magic. Yhwach should also be noted as being able to control the future itself. â
Again you are reaching, you just pointed out how their goals are different. Now if you want to say âboth involve a plan that involves altering the world just for their own desireâ then Kubo ripped off Kishimoto who did something like that, in his war arc in Naruto. This like this might have the same premise, but both Yhwach and Zerefâs goals are different. Taking in what makes characters different such as motivation is how we change something from a rip off. If we go from a blanket idea and call that rip off, then everyone is ripping things off. Yhwach was not the first villain in manga to want to alter to universe in someway.
âA quiet, serious, analytical subordinate with long white hair and high amounts of respect for his tyrannical superior. Invel Yura is the Fairy Tail version of Jugram Haschwalth. â
This might be a little pointless, but Jugramâs hair is blond not white. Also this is again a trope. The serous analytical mind in a villain group is not something new. If you mean the timing I suppose you have something there, but itâs a trope. Like Invel and Jugram are just like Van Auguer from One Piece. The character who is critical minded is not something new.
But Iâm sure you mean in terms of timing, both appearing in the last arc, but Bleach already had Ulquiora in this role, so really Kubo just recycled a characterâs base personality that head used.
âIn the fight with Gremmy Thorneaux, a villain that can bring anything in his imagination to life, Kenpachi Zaraki cuts down the meteor Gremmy materializes in one swing. This is later blatantly ripped off with Erza destroying the meteor summoned by Ireneâs Sema spellâwhile all of her bones have been smashed. â
Okay see this I understand as being a rip off, both the situation and the method for cutting down the meteor are the same, but I would like to bring up that Naruto had Madara send a meteor down in his war arc, but it wasnât stopped by a sword swing. So if we are going to play the concept-ripoff game then that seems oddly suspicious
âWall Eehto and his ability, Weakness (basically pulling giantass superweapons out of his ass) are blatant ripoffs of BG9, another mechanical being with the same power that fought Soi Fon.â
Okay I will give you this one as well, because like the Jugram-invel thing, the timing of a mechanical character that appears in the final arc in series that have never had robot like being in it as a plot point before. But I will not that the Mechina race was named dropped by Jenny in the GMG, while BG9 is stright out of nowhere.
âWhile itâs difficult to call the Historias of the Dead ripoffs of just Bleach alone, since âmaking you fight previous enemiesâ is one of the most unoriginal powers ever, itâs essentially a ripoff of Gremmy Thomeauxâs ability to create complex villains out of thin airâŚ.but even less original. â
YOU JUST POINTED OUT THAT NEINHARTâS ABILITY ISNâT SOMETHING WE HAVENât SEEN! Oh Bleach is not the first story that has a cast made up of shinigami and who look over the world and protect it from demon like figures, maybe read Yu Yu Hakusho, a series many have claimed Kubo has ripped off.
Second of all the power of imagination that Gremmy uses is different from Neinharts. Neinhart actually is creating people who existed, but Gremmy can make new life from his imagination, actually FT had a character who could do that, he was called Rustyrose!
God Serenaâs power isnât a ripoff, but you canât tell me that whole âfountain of dragonsâ he produces wasnât suspiciously evocative of Hado 99: Gonryotenmetsu, used by Aizen.Â
Okay. Itâs not. Aizenâs Hado only had one dragon, while Serena had 8. If you mean the design then both are ripping off DBâs Shenron who also looks similar. The only difference aside the number is Serenâs look more detailed and existed more for aesthetic while the Hado was suppose to be an actual attack.
Jacob Lessioâs invisibility + teleportation are ripped straight from Guenael Lee, the substitute Sternritter created by Gremmy Thomeaux with the designation V, âThe Vanishing Pointâ.
So wait itâs a rip off if people have the same powers? Then I guess Natsu is a rip off of Yamamoto because they both use fire. Hell, you do better saying Jacob Absolum from One Piece because he makes weapons invisible and makes womenâs clothes disappear.
Look Whathesays, I am not going to tell you that Mashima is a âbastion of creativityâ, no heâs not. But I find it very dubious to call it a rip off when a lot of your examples focus more on tropes, and the whole point of multiple people doing similar story methods is to see how they execute it and what they bring to it. You can think Kubo does it better than Hiro, Iâm not saying you canât. But I for one, find a lot of this criticism lacking.
If you want to hate Hiro, go ahead, but if youâre going to make claims like these, then they are going to be challenged.
