also sorry for being aro on main but friendly reminder to view characters as individual beings if you want to fully understand them and analyze them properly. while relationships can be a way to push a character to a certain point of development and explore them better you gotta snap out of the fanon ship-enduced mindset every once in a while you just gotta
#like. edgeworth is a good example of this#a LOT of his character is connected to phoenix#and phoenix does provide development#nrmt can help us explore both characters with their interactions#BUT i barely see takes on edgeworth that aren't connected to phoenix somehow#despite him going through most of things decidedly on his own#he spent sm time soul searching in europe#so yeah. just. consider this yk#narumitsu is great though it's good i love it from multiple points of view#but relationships are not everything about a person

How come Rooster Teeth's other shows do not get as much hate as RWBY does?
There are SEVEN Reasons why RWBY gets all this hate.
Hbomberguy lying. Prior to Hbomberguy's hate video? RWBY videos were ranking in tens and hundreds of thousands of views. Videos were mostly accurate. Then Hbomberguy made a 3-hour hate video that could be debunked with 5-10 minutes of google search. Everyone began hating RWBY because the bald neck-bearded man who made hate videos encouraged people to hate the writers and the show by spreading misinformation. And the people who did do the google searches were drowned out by mob mentality of ignorance, the mob ignorance that is hbomberguy's audience. And so that misinformation spread like wildfire. And from his hate video, others were inspired. MangaKamen was the next, who kept screaming that he was a victim of the RWBY Fandom and encouraged people to pay him to make anti-rwby hate videos in which he made his BS. As a result, anti-rwby videos swarmed youtube, drowning out the positivity. And hatred grows on Youtube and Twitter. And you don't want to wade through several tons of hate videos just to reach a good RWBY Video or channel. So Hbomberguy created an atmosphere of hate that drowns out positivity.
2. Money Hatred is a popular business. Just ask the various hate groups funded by JK Rowling's video game Hogwarts Legacy. Ask the GOP who fleece their constituents for money. Ask the youtubers who make hate video after video, not only pulling in youtube ad revenue, but also promoting a patreon so that their followers can pay them to hate further. Judgmental Critter has been called out by many for using RWBY over all her "other content" in making money. type in RWBY without using a channel blocker extension on your phone or youtube browser. All you'll see is that hate. Celtic Phoenix demanded money to make a fixit fanfic in which he promotes the patriarchy and toxic masculinity. Hate, lies money....all created through hating on RWBY.
3. Misogyny You knew this would be brought up. I will die on the hill that the reason so many neckbeards hate RWBY is because: It took a very fanservice concept (girls fighting monsters) and gave them stories, personalities, development, and Bechdel-passing relationships, while it took two male power fantasies (gritty edgelord who uses prolific violence and morally grey actions to pursue a noble goal, and tactical mastermind who makes difficult sacrifices for The Mission) and made them failures. It gave women the roles typically held by men. It eliminated mansplaining and made MEN, instead of women, the target of "Reason why you suck" speeches. It made women equal to men in brains and brawn. It took toxic masculinity and shat on it. Many men and women who defend the patriarchy and spit at feminism were furious at RWBY being a genuinely feminist show. So much so, they spread lies and attacked the writers and VAs. Vexed Viewer harassed Barbara Dunkelman. TheFloofArtist harassed both Barbara Dunkelman AND Arryn Zech, by spamming gore and snuff fanart towards the VAs. Judgmental Critter harassed Arryn Troche. Fatman Falling stalked and harassed a girl who talked on Twitter about liking RWBY. Hbomberguy repeatedly harassed miles and kerry. EruptionFang publicly lied and said that Miles and Kerry were bullied by fans into providing "crotch snot". Four female protagonists. The men are just side characters to serve the women's roles. When people say that their "fanfiction is better than the show" You won't see female protagonists by themselves. No, you'll see them as arm candy to a white male savior protagonist who tells women that they suck and saves the day with the power of toxic masculinity while straightwashing every woman in sight. White Male OCs....doesn't quite work well in the later volumes, which is why many people hate the post-beacon era, because the non-school setting focuses on women and takes away chances for the white straight male self-insert.
4. Being an asshole/Victim Complex For RWBY Haters, the ability to lie, hate, harm, and all the while claim they are victims. It brings out the worst in people online. The horrible pleasure people take in destroying what a small company has worked so hard to make. The desire to rant and complain and insult a show and its fandom while calling yourself a fan as some sort of shield to defend oneself from being called a hater in the same breath as telling people to stop watching RWBY or saying"rwby bad". The insistence that you cannot enjoy a show unless you tear it apart and refuse to give a fair respectful positive take. Look on youtube comments and you will see RWBY Critics harassing RWBY Fans. Look on Twitter, and see men and women attacking the animators and writers. Now putting words in dead man's mouth is nothing new, just ask GOP. But the RWBY Haters deify Monty because Hbomberguy used said dead man, who Hbomb insulted while alive, in order to be awful. That's why rwby haters use the word "toxic positivity". They want to make it seem that their victims are the evil ones, to silence them from speaking up. Its why "Valid criticism" is BS. Its an excuse used to spread hatred and call that hatred "criticism". MangaKamen makes yearly videos insulting RWBY. ONE PERSON insulted him...ONE. He screamed bloody murder and accused the entire fandom. The word "toxic positivity" means that anyone defending RWBY is unable to take criticism, and that anyone speaking up is toxic. While "valid criticism" means that the worst lies against RWBY and the fandom can be seen as legitimate, which again allows people to be their worst selves. Men and women alike have the power to be this inhumane. Worst part is that you don't even have to be conservative to be this evil. Have you noticed how much RWDE and R/RWBYCritics love to be "holier than thou" with their attitudes and act as if they are "saving others from RWBY" and its fandom?
5. Homophobia. Bumbleby is basically Korrasami but better. It introduces the interest in each other sooner. It has the women talk to each other and support each other. Both the writers and animators and even Voice Actresses all support Bumbleby. Its completely opposite from ATLA where the VAs supported the toxic ship that is Zutara. But? Two women can spend entire seasons together, people will call them "just friends" but a man expresses interest in a woman and talks to her for several minutes? "Its true love". Even better, Coeur Al Aran, who admits to never watching RWBY and makes fixit fanfics that replace women with men as protags and straightwashes everything? He saw adam cut off yang's arm, and decided to make an adam fanfic where adam sleeps with yang and blake is abusive to adam. The hatred of adam and jaune fanfic writers towards bumbleby is so toxic, those who write jaunexteam rwby or adam fanfics have mostly been found to be homophobic/misogynistic. Despite all of Yang and Blake's interactions, people insist that Sun is "entiteld" to Blake, and that Yang and Blake's relationship came out of nowhere...or is "woke and pandering". Also, if you've seen that hentai artists on twitter LOVE to make fanart of a male self-insert with lesbians.... Its a sick fetish of theirs, and its not just RWBY that suffers this, but Honkai Star Rail suffered that from HimeHingHoi or some artist who drew a white male self-insert knocking up two lesbians.
6. Headcanons- "Your show isn't doing what I imagined it to be doing, and since its not doing what I think its supposed to be doing, that makes it bad" Adam introduced trying to kill civilians in the black trailer and in season 2 tells Cinder that he will persuade the White Fang to keep dying for her cause. People are angry that in V3 he is an irredeemable mass murdering psycho. Ironwood introduced as a man who merges huntsmen system into his own private army, gets ozpin fired by going behind oz's back, and weaponizes the human soul into an android that he uses the vytal festival to test. And despite having two seats of power, does nothing to help others. People furious that he became a paranoid dictator. Ruby and Yang: Introduced as sisters, confirmed as half-sisters by monty. We see that Taiyang is the father of both. QrowxSummer shippers: Livid that the writers repeatedly state that Qrow is not and never will be Ruby's father, and so they pretend to be illiterate and not able to tell the difference between step-sisters and half-sisters because they're so delusionally obsessed that the writers should lie to them for a garbage theory and ship. Just because somebody watches the show, doesn't mean that the writers should do what they demand of them. Blacksun shippers love to claim that the writers were bullied into Bumbleby, but said writers and VAs said Bumbleby was planned from the start. RWBY Critics were bloodthirsty when Barbara basically put blacksun and jaunexblake and jaunexyang headcanons 6 feet under into the grave. Just because the show doesn't do what you think it should? Does not mean its bad. So many haters are ridiculously self-entitled.
7. Corruption and Revision- "I fell in love with what RWBY Could Have Been" People didn't want a show about female lgbt protagonists. They wanted a show where they can fetishize women being damsels in distress needing a straight white male character to guide them. RWBY gives a giant middle finger to the straight white male protagonist and to the patriarchy and to straight-shipping. So when they say "the fanfiction is better" or they promote a rewrite, or they say "the porn is better"... it all comes down to their straight white male OCs... it comes down to their revenge fantasies against female characters (one loser made a wrestler OC comic where his Male OC beat up women)... It comes down to their fixit-fanfics that put men on a pedestal and put women under the bootheel of the men they glorify. Their idea of "wasted potential" or "ruined potential" involves tearing apart what makes RWBY great, and remaking it in their sick twisted image. Just look to the GOP for real life example, or Galactic Empire for fictional example.
And here you have your answer. The Seven Reasons RWBY Haters exist.
Edit: Just had a chat with a nice lady on Reddit, and she gave me another way of thinking about things.
"Media that's come out of patriarchal societies (so, the overwhelming majority of all media) tends centers the perspective of males by default. Ditto cisheteronormativy, ethonationalism, ableism, etc., resulting in predominantly cisgender heterosexual neurotypical protagonists belonging to the ethnic majority.
And if you grow up as a cis straight white boy in America, you don't even notice.
And if you grow up as anyone else, then your options are either to learn how to empathize with characters who don't look like you, or, to pass on this whole "Media" thing altogether.
So while I can sit through 5 seasons of Better Call Saul and still call it some of the best television I've ever seen, a man who's never learned how to empathize with characters from backgrounds different from his own can't even approach something like She-Ra.
It's incredibly noticeable when boys- for instance- refuse to play TLOU2 after the inciting incident, or people angry at those who think Persona games should bring back female player characters.
The way forward is more representation, all the time, forever. And you can tell a lot about a person by how much the preceding sentence contorted their face into a contempting scowl"

The Klavier Problems Post
so. i talked about a bunch of things in that post i made earlier about how to fix apollo justice (the game though also the character) including all the little things i would do but the two big changes i think are needed to fundamentally fix this game are 1) making apollo’s inscrutable asshole mentor a separate character from phoenix wright 2) make klavier gavin an actual goddamn person.
and i talked about #1 at length last time, so here’s the post about #2.
so, klavier gavin. i keep trying to come up with metaphors that don’t feel too clunky to actually use in a sentence and not being satisfied but to me he is several pieces of cardboard lovingly painted and assembled to make roughly half the shape of a person, held together by three staples and a prayer. what’s there is great! it’s just. not an entire character.
conceptually he’s fantastic. an actually nice and helpful prosecutor? WILD. absolute galaxy brain development. who knew you could have one of those. an apparently nice and helpful prosecutor who has ties to the game’s main villain and so might be playing the long game, leaving the audience and potentially protagonist suspicious and unsettled the whole time, only to eventually prove himself genuinely a good person when things get desperate? excellent twisty fun, and provides obvious and delightful room for things to get interesting and complex.
and even in practice, there’s parts of that that are genuinely executed well! there’s at least a half-dozen points over the course of 4-2 and 4-3 where he clearly knows what’s really going on and gives apollo the opportunity to figure it out/prove it when he could’ve just gone for an easy win. he actually plays way more fair than literally any other prosecutor so far up to and including edgeworth in the matt engarde case! he’s way more forthcoming with info during investigation segments than anyone else would’ve been, both directly and by providing access to crime scenes apollo was otherwise blocked from, and i swear during the first trial especially he, like, hand-fed apollo the win. that’s FASCINATING and so so different from anything we’ve seen before, i love it.
the problem is… kind of the everything else? or like, that there isn’t anything else. he’s set up to be this massively complex character who actually has by far the most difficult/horrible time over the course of the game, and the writers just… forgot to actually put the complexity in.
he’s got all the pieces of an amazing character—this consummate performer who’s always putting on a show, perpetually performing who he wants to be and how he wants his audience to see him, hiding his true feelings from everyone around him, that’s great, that’s always a good time. someone genuinely good-hearted and honest who truly believes in justice and doing the right thing and playing fair so sincerely and completely that they can’t even see that the people they love are secretly evil? again, that’s great! i love that! that’s so compelling!!
but like. [padme amidala meme voice] okay so he’s a consummate performer who hides all his feelings. he does have actual feelings, though, right? okay so he’s genuinely sincerely good and honest and kind and would pick justice and truth over letting his loved ones get away with murder if forced to make that choice? again, he does have feelings about that, though, right? that’s not an easy choice to make?
and while i do love the introduction of a prosecutor who plays fair and is nice and friendly instead of [literally every other prosecutor in the entire series both before and after this game], it’s really fucking weird how chill he is about interacting with apollo and trucy. like. really fucking weird. why are they all so normal about each other? why is klavier so chill about helping his brother’s ex-employee who proved his brother was a murderer and the daughter of the man his brother framed for said murder? like. even if he’s all Professional™ to the point of managing to hide whatever he must be feeling just about his brother being a convicted murderer, how how HOW is he so normal whenever he’s interacting with apollo and trucy. it’s WEIRD it should be SO WEIRD where is the tension??
even more weirdly, why isn’t apollo weird about interacting with klavier gavin, in turn? even if we want to assume klavier is Just That Good at maintaining his persona, apollo is not a professional musician and doesn’t seem like a very good actor. he should feel extremely weird about this guy and he just… does not seem to. for that matter, trucy should feel weird too! that doesn’t need to be something the game actually digs into, it could be implied in passing that she’s also doing the performance thing and hiding all her actual emotions in favor of showing a carefully crafted persona to the world and that she only shows what she’s actually feeling to phoenix, in private, but NOPE not even vague implications in that direction really, she’s just. actually totally normal around klavier gavin and is a huge fan of the gavinners somehow??
but the weirdness (or rather, baffling lack thereof) doesn’t end with apollo and trucy.
again, not wanting to talk about/show how he feels about his brother for most of the game totally makes sense, he’s a consummate performer with a well-practiced facade etc etc, he isn’t even in 4-1 so by the time we meet him he’s already had time to practice being His Normal Professional Self. he’s got this. in my hypothetical rewrite he’s got this slightly less around apollo and trucy specifically because of their very specific personal connections but if we hear him talking to ema or to other people he’s definitely got this.
but in canon he literally finds out during a trial that one of his bandmates/good friends is also a murderer and a smuggler and was the one responsible for setting his guitar on fire which he was SUPER upset about earlier in the case, and his reaction to daryan’s confession is… playing air guitar and saying “you’re not in the band anymore btw.” there’s a couple minutes in the last case where he’s like “oh shit my brother committed a LOT more crimes than i thought actually” before he goes back to not caring. like, setting aside his expression bc limited number of sprites etc etc, based specifically on the actual dialogue he’s clearly distressed about the possibility of kristoph having been responsible for poisoning vera, apollo openly says “but you clearly think it is possible,” and then klavier is like “eh fuck it, i knew something awful was going on, yeah let’s make my brother testify” and… that’s it. air guitar time. kristoph spends half his time on the stand insulting/manipulating klavier/attempting to undermine klavier’s confidence in himself and it’s clearly working! until suddenly klavier’s like “haha yeah no it’s all good.” in the credits scene he compares the trial in which he found out his brother had attempted to kill at least three different people and he himself was partially complicit in kristoph being convicted, positively, to a rock concert.
like. there’s maintaining a professional facade and then there’s that.
he deserves to be so goddamn compelling. but like. in practice he’s not even a person. why doesn’t he CARE. why doesn’t he care kristoph is a murderer. why doesn’t he care apollo proved it. why doesn’t he care daryan is a murderer. why doesn’t he care kristoph is a murderer again, and also forged evidence and used klavier to ruin someone’s career and presumably would’ve used the forged evidence himself to win under false pretenses in klavier’s first case if he had the chance and and and. why doesn’t he care in the next game that his mentor got murdered. let him be a person with interiority i am begging.
but like. this is what i keep coming back to. i could fix it. i could fix him. not in the “oh i could fix him” generally-dating-related sense. more like the opposite of that actually. i could make him psychologically MUCH worse. but as a character he would actually be good.
it should’ve been such an amazing dramatic reveal/twist in the last case when the scope of kristoph gavin’s crimes begin to be revealed and klavier stays true. all game, he’s too nice and too helpful and apollo and trucy feel more than a little awkward interacting with him even though he’s always perfectly polite to them despite little hints of something darker underneath, moments when his perfect facade falters. he should keep apollo/the player off balance and unsure what to think of him, and we should suspect that he’s just as bad as kristoph but playing the long game even better.
and we get to the final case and realize kristoph gavin has been behind everything and at first klavier acts like he doesn’t believe it, and we brace ourselves for klavier to show his true colors and push the judge to end cross-examination and let kristoph get off scot-free even though we know he’s behind everything and we know klavier knows—
and then he doesn’t.
he hasn’t known all along, he wasn’t in on it, he’d adamantly repressed any suspicions he’d had all those years—so the gradual reveal that kristoph was behind everything is completely devastating, not least because he has to learn and process it all on the stand in front of everyone (not least both apollo and kristoph himself), and so the evidence builds, and finally, klavier has a whole entire breakdown of his own, that’s if anything longer and more dramatic than kristoph’s
and then he collects himself, and he apologizes, and he helps us win the case.
like
that would be
so goddamn compelling
and i genuinely don’t understand why that’s not what the game gave us. we were so close to getting that, why did he just brush it off? why didn’t he care?
so in the secret good version in my head, that’s what happens.
there should be differences in how he’s written outside the courtroom, too, though. like i said before, in canon, apollo-and-klavier and trucy-and-klavier should feel extremely fucking weird about interacting with each other and be varying levels of good at hiding it but none of them should be perfect, and i think it’s a major writing/characterization flaw that none of that is true. in this version, though, the situation is a little different: trucy could still potentially be a little weird around klavier gavin bc he’s kind of part of why her original dad abandoned her (and vice versa), but she doesn’t actually have to be.
because here’s the thing: in this au, klavier hasn’t done anything to phoenix at all except (if he didn’t take the whole seven years off for his band—which, given that he did still get someone disbarred thanks to his brother’s tip and probably still had weird feelings to repress about that, he might have!) potentially face him sometimes in court (where, as in canon, he’s an entirely fair and reasonable opponent who doesn’t resort to anything beyond lighthearted insults and is an extremely graceful loser, and in general is an absolutely delightful change of pace from the paynes or who-have-you), and while he is part of why trucy’s original dad left, that was as much (as far as she knows) the fault of shadi’s defense attorney for forging evidence instead of proving him innocent fair and square, and if her dad had actually cared he could’ve come back for her eventually, so while she probably isn’t sure about klavier right at first regardless, i think it would be plausible for her to not have any sort of a grudge by the time the game actually happens?
conversely, though, if phoenix stays a defense attorney he and edgeworth definitely get married within, like, a year, tops. so while trucy might not be weird about klavier, at least by the time the plot of the game kicks off, he’s kind of nervous around her, just like. not bc of the zak gramarye trial. because one of her dads is his boss.
but then that just makes any conversation trucy-and-apollo have with klavier that much more fun bc as far as trucy’s concerned, here’s that cool prosecutor who’s one of the nicest people she knows from her dads’ jobs! while klavier is slightly terrified but in a normal polite kind of way, and meanwhile trucy and apollo have their canon pseudo-siblings-because-they-don’t-know-they’re-biological-siblings dynamic, and finally klavier and apollo interacting is every bit as fucked up and tense as they should be about each other in canon bc oh my god you’re why my brother was exposed as a murderer and got sent to jail / oh god you’re my evil ex-boss’s younger brother, and how the hell do you talk to someone like that? because that’s what their dynamic should have been in canon and frankly we were robbed
nyquildriver: klavier being polite and helpful but obviously taken off guard frequently by these two would be so entertaining nyquildriver: it gives us the tension that we want while not being like, bizarre about it and resorting to like. flirtation? that feels weirdly like pandering nyquildriver: although klavier disguising his uneasiness with flirtation? that would be an interesting choice iridescentoracle: YES i actually love the idea of klavier flirting reflexively as like. a defense mechanism. when he’s stressed and doesn’t know how to respond he leans harder into the rockstar persona which includes flirting with everyone whether he remotely means it or not. it fits into what we do see of klavier in canon so well but like. turns him into more of a real person?
nyquildriver: honestly the pieces are there! they just didn't arrange them into a complete picture of a person, argh nyquildriver: after their first meeting apollo: what the fuck was that trucy: was he… into you? apollo: I don't think he was, which is why that was weird as hell??? nyquildriver: trucy's favorite running joke now is klavier flirting with apollo like he's a fan nyquildriver: she buys gavinners merch to plant on apollo/his things on the off chance that klavier sees it because the reaction should be hysterical nyquildriver: and that is worth giving up her allowance for however many years
iridescentoracle: god. and the like, deeply comedic irony that of literally everyone in the world who he could have this awkward and specific a relationship with, it just happens to be the one guy who can tell he absolutely does not actually mean the flirting and is perpetually accompanied by his sister who can also tell iridescentoracle: like, if apollo was ANYONE ELSE he might be able to actually pull off using Flirty Rockstar Klavier Gavin as a façade to get through interactions convincingly normally. but unfortunately, nyquildriver: and it would be a great way to keep the player off guard and suspicious of him too!
#aa tag#ace attorney#AA4#character: klavier gavin#this was originally going to be all one post but at some point i realized this was like a solid 40% of the post and that just felt silly#so parts 1 & 2 it was!#also nyquildriver & i aren't actually opposed to klavier/apollo as a ship categorically despite the exchange at the end#we just find their canon dynamic bafflingly flat & only sometimes fleshed out in fic in ways are actually convincing?#and like. come on. tell me this hypothetical dynamic isn't hilarious#aa posts#aj rewrite tag

Ho-oh
Ho-oh (#250)
Irisignusdus phoenix
General Information: Ho-oh the Rainbow Pokémon, an elusive creature heard in myths and folktales the world over as the God of Rainbows (or its many variants).
Ho-oh are an average of 12’06 feet (3.8 M) tall with an impressive wingspan, and weigh around 438.7 pounds (199 kg).
Habitat: Ho-ohs can be found anywhere in the world where it is summer or late spring/early autumn. They especially love rainbows, and are most likely to be found flying through the sky after a rainstorm.
Divinity: Demigod, but one with a high divinity ratio. Their divine power is the fact that they are able to raise the newly deceased from the dead, though this is rare. Again, it must be emphasized that it is only for the recently departed, those who haven’t had time to properly decay and could be fixed with a smidgen of resurrection magic.
Note: Ho-oh are able to create an item called Sacred Ash. In this game, this item provides low-level resurrection magic as described above. Only the freshly departed can be resurrected with this, and it is one use per Sacred Ash. You can find this item described in the Legendary Artifacts section. It is up to the Game Master to decide how often an individual Ho-oh is able or willing to create Sacred Ash.
Life Cycles: It’s unclear what all a Ho-ohs life cycle entails, but they are chronologically immortal, killed only by fatal injuries and disease. Still, while the exacts may be unknown to most humans, here’s a run-down of its approximations:
A Ho-oh is born to a single egg to its parents, which are either both Ho-ohs or one is a Mew. These eggs are laid very rarely, so rarely that documented cases are extremely limited, scarce, and hard to come by, and in your game’s timeline, there may not be any living record of a Ho-oh egg. This egg, when there is one, incubates for a long time, even decades. It will be cared for in a remote nest, far away from any would-be predators. When at last it does hatch, which can only occur on the summer solstice after a rain, the baby Ho-oh will be fully precious and follow its parents into the skies. It takes many more years to develop into an adult, and many Ho-ohs will never know another juvenile Ho-oh before it grows up. Once they leave the nest and its parents, the Ho-oh flies off to explore the world.
Behavior: Ho-oh are travelers who seek to explore the world, to see many sights, and meet many Pokémon. They tend to be a bit wary of humans, but more because humans can be unpredictable and they prefer friendly ones.
Diet: Fruit, nuts, and seeds.
Conservation: ??? Data unavailable ???
Relationship with Humans: Ho-oh have been a beloved sight to humanity since time immemorial. They are seen after storms, bringing with them beautiful rainbows that give hope and joy to those who see them. Some cultures believe that Ho-oh grant wishes, some believe them to be the Bearer of the Rainbow, and others believe Ho-oh to be a messenger of the gods, or even a psychopomp who ferries souls to the afterlife. They are revered as benign beings, who’s presence is a blessing, and who’s aid can be sought… but whether that aid is given, is another matter.
Classification: Ho-oh is in the genus Irisignusdus with the species epithet phoenix. It is both the namesake and ancestral species of the entire genus, and all other members in it are descended from I. phoenix

An Analysis of Ozai’s characterization, rise and descent
Recently I’ve seen a lot of discourse on Fire Lord Ozai. One of the cruxes of the issue being that people look at Ozai from the original series and claim he’s too “2 dimensional” or “cartoonishly evil” and I’m here to say “let’s look through a lens instead”
While there may be some case for Ozai being just another big bad there’s far more evidence that suggests his issues are far more nuanced. The show continually stops at these points of character development to focus on generational trauma and unlearning the negative influences of family/nation.
In that breath of we look at Ozai from the point of view of a nationalist with a narcissistic personality disorder almost ALL of his subsequent behavior makes sense…
• Ozai being controlling of his family members. Even from the start of his marriage he shows signs immediately of trying to manipulate and estrange Ursa from her family.
•His domination and manipulation of his children. Remember although he favors Azula it’s still very obvious that the only reason he does is because of her perceived value. I personally think this could come from her ability to fire bend blue flames, something his father likewise did. Whether it be a genetic trait or a sign of “pure” bending ability it is essentially a trophy for Ozai. A classic narcissistic parent only has value for their child and still demands to be above them - we see this when Ozai names Azula Fire Lord only after making a new greater title for himself (get to that later). Since Zuko showed none of the same promise as Azula - Ozai had already resigned to him being of no value to him and even admits the Fire Sages and his mother are the only reason he’s even here. Ozai only has value on power and much like his intentions to usurp Iroh were always there his intention to “cast [Zuko] of out of the palace” are likewise there for the same reason.
*side note YES there is one time where Ozai does save Zuko’s life but even his account of these events tells all you need to know.
Ozai saves his son (because it would be embarrassing for the FIRE prince to have drowned and Ozai knows this) but Zuko “spends the day” in his mother’s arms.
•Ozai’s narcissism eventually surpasses his nationalism as even Fire Lord is not a grand enough title. A key characteristic of NPD is an “excessive need for admiration.” We see this frequently with Ozai as well as his self importance and entitlement. When he becomes the Phoenix King he assumes a new level of perceived power and admiration. As well as a superiority over his ancestors who started the war. After all they were just Fire Lords, he is much more. He’s a megalomaniac and even taking the most powerful position in the Fire Nation wasn’t enough for him.
To suggest he’s just the ember island version of himself is too reductive. Almost all of Ozai’s behavior under this lens of sociopathy and narcissistic personally disorder track quite easily. It’s not that Ozai simply manipulates and attacks his family he NEEDS to be the most powerful. The perception of weakness and his hubris is the set up for his downfall because the ones he never thought worthy (Zuko and Iroh) are eventually his undoing.
This lens also provides a great backboard for analyzing Azula, it bleeds into why she’s a perfectionist and her own mental instability. Growing up under the boot of narcissistic father explains Azula and Zuko’s (initial) entitlement and desire for recognition. They’re both classists and nationalists at the beginning of the story. Zuko later gets humbled and has his eyes opened but Azula still very much (as we see with her relationships) holds her royalty and rights very highly.
Azula especially caters to her father’s need for admiration and she assumes his fantasies of grandeur. Her subsequent actions of manipulating people seems a learned trait and no doubt from Ozai, she did watch from the shadows as he manipulated his way to the throne. It sets a tone for her as well to dominate Zuko and usurp his birthright, even though Ozai shows he cares only for power not for tradition. She still strives for his approval and acknowledgement of superiority.
And of course the climactic ending of his reign being his power is taken away from him - this is a death knell for everything mentioned above. Thats WHY it’s so impactful what Aang does not only because it aligns with Aang’s desire for pacifism but it’s the antithesis of Ozai’s campaign for total domination. Ozai only ever cared about power and control - to be stripped of his literal fire power reduces him to all he has left - mental control. When he’s imprisoned he is STILL trying to fuck with Zuko’s head by bringing up his mother and these cryptic stories from the past.
Although there’s is the obvious black and white to see Ozai as a cartoonishly evil war lord who has intentions of genocide there’s more to Ozai than that. Hopefully this analysis also resonates with anyone like myself who has/had a parent who shows these signs of narcissism and empathized with both Zuko and Azula because we know what kind of monsters those parents can be …
I’m not saying this is the ONLY lens to view Ozai and if the textual evidence wasn’t there maybe I would say I’m projecting but I think the case is pretty solid for the kind of villain Ozai is. He’s much more cerebral than this audience is giving credit for and it’s his villainy that ultimately defines many of the other characters and their paths.

i can't help but think that the two firelords in aang's fever dream would've been ozai's previous, early-staged designs, from the concept of the "firelord" to the concept of "ozai"
1.
this guy literally has fire shaped eyebrows and a fire nation insignia (or what it used to be?) stuck on his forehead. his blatant (stereotypical?) theme from his appearance is powerhungry(small eyes, bulky form), greedy-arrogant(eating grapes as a symbol?), brute-forced(war-themed clothing). I think this could be the very first design of him when creating the first idea of the "ultimate hero" and the "ultimate villain". The marks of the "first" can also be seen from the clothing design (the scarf? napkin? thingy around his chest) and simple color choices (simple red with simple yellow).
also you can see that he was agreed to have a very long and thin beard from the beginning which would feed on the "wisdom" "intelligence" and "strength" propaganda
2.
again, simple red and simple yellow.
clothing looks rather flashy, which means this look of him was also made at early stages of development and the atla fashion in general hasn't yet been stabilized. (: the flair in his wrists and the thing that goes across his shoulders to his chest. makes no sense. the top half looks like a flashy sleeping robe while the bottom half looks like... an outdoor activity metal skirt?)
he looks older than the previous one. does he? he looks more manipulative though. i think this is where his "slick tongue" personality was established bc a narrow eyes, narrow eyebrows character design kinda points to a stereotypical "rat person". i think. again long beard. that points to his high status or whatever.
this design looks like it was given to an earthbending trainer who haggled on money rather than actual teaching, who was assigned by toph's parents to be her earthbending teacher
3.
this is the very first time his face is actually shown. in seasons 1 and 2, his face was intentionally hidden, probably a tactic to bubble up the audience as "what could a monster like him look like 😱".
but ironically, he's a very normal looking guy. in fact, the most normal looking guy the designers could ever make intentionally. No part of him that could make anyone go "yep this is the face of the villain." this design of him is meant to convey that looks are often the most deceiving to your judgement. this ALSO shows when the gaang finds his baby picture in his beach house on ember island and mistake him for baby zuko.
it represents that everyone can go crazy with propaganda and an insane amount of power. like aang said, how everyone is capable of "great evil" and "great good".
taking katara's quote on the baby picture, "but he looks so sweet and innocent": his "innocent" look acts like a mask he puts on, as well as the mask of neutral expression, on top of the mask of his slick tongue.
the only thing that changes from here on is the frame of his face for anatomy i guess
below is also an impacting scene in my viewpoint:
how his face contorts from this
to this
in less than a second at azula's proposition of "burning it all to the ground". shows him that he's able to mask everything as he want it to, especially about stuff like neutral-face and power-face as that is NOT his ego-high power-tripping face:
THIS is his ego-high power-tripping face
and this is him putting back on his slick face right after a moment of being unable to mask his shock-rage and consequently rage-stripping himself
"now the universe delivers you to me like an 💅act 💅 of 💅 providence 💅" yep the providence that single-handedly blew your fucking ship up
also i forgot that the scene right after defeating ozai existed, i forgot how much of a drama queen he is:
"i'm STILL ALIVE"
and "i AM the phOEnix KING"
ok girlie fellow girlie
one more thing: he sounds genuinely proud of zuko when he commends him for "slaying" the avatar. and he reprimands aang for being "weak even with all the power in the world". looks like he really does think everything around power and ONLY power. hmm, i wonder who taught him that, hmm? tragic.

i finally finished dual destinies. i had fun, but. it's not good. i think most fans agree, the 3d models and colours are ugly, the translation had a lot of basic errors, but the most frustrating part is the story. there's good ideas but they try to juggle too many characters and stories and it ends up being muddled.
so this is my. not how i would 'fix' dual destinies because tbh if i was really trying to fix this game i would simply say it should have been an actual sequel to aa4. but how i would rearrange the pieces to make it a more cohesive game on its own.
should be obvious but BIG SPOILERS FOR DUAL DESTINIES
overall changes:
no more dark age of the law. it's so fucking stupid "the dark age of the law started 8 years ago" does the original trilogy mean nothing to you. you're telling me dl-6 was the glorious age of the law get a grip. this added nothing to the story just say blackquill was wrongly convicted that happens EVERY GAME
no more turnabout academy. i'm sorry turnabout academy fans but it's too mixed up with the dark age of the law and frankly doesn't add anything. i feel juniper should have been playing a similar role to larry in aa1 as the tutorial defendant and a familiar face later
the central problem with dual destinies is that it can't decide if it's an apollo game or athena game or a phoenix game, and that makes the story weaker. so i would make it a game about the relationship between apollo and athena. since that's our central story thread, phoenix doesn't get his badge back until the very end of the game, giving those two more time to shine in court.
let's go case by case:
turnabout countdown
the main change i would make here is that athena is the lawyer the whole time. her having a breakdown because she has to do it alone and phoenix showing up is fine imo, in fact i like that athena has to deal with her ptsd in almost every case. but then it steals athena's moment by having her give up and phoenix take over, and also means that in the tutorial case, phoenix the one who needs to have the law explained to him when there's a rookie lawyer standing right there? honestly bizarre choice from the writers.
i would flip it so phoenix doesn't have his badge and can't take over, but shows up to provide emotional support in a mia-like role, which allows athena to continue defending with his help. the rest can progress as it was.
monstrous turnabout
again i liked this case and i don't think too many changes need to be made. However. trucy was so incredible sidelined in this game she's apollo's weirdgirl but she just dips at the first moment of tension, supposedly to 'look after jinxie' but then we never see her again. i'm fuming. if you want to replace apollo's weirdgirl, at least put some effort into it.
i would have apollo, trucy and athena investigate for this case together. athena and trucy have very different approaches to investigation. i'd like to see apollo and trucy have their dynamic disrupted by how direct and full speed ahead athena is at all times. maybe even argue about it a little. but by the end, they accept athena as the new member of the agency and get the not guilty verdict together, after which, maybe trucy hands the weirdgirl torch to athena and says she'll have more time for magic this way or something. in my vision, this is a game about apollo and athena's friendship, so that friendship has to feel earned, and this was the best place to do that.
turnabout academy
like i said, i would get rid of this one. its purpose in the plot is twofold: develop the character of juniper to how we meet her in turnabout countdown (which i think was unnecessary) and to hammer in the point about the dark age of the law (which i think was actively stupid)
instead. we needed a case where clay was the defendant. the way they introduced clay was so incredibly lazy my mouth dropped open. how is the player meant to feel any emotion about clay's death if he's just a random character? if they created a case where apollo was defending his best friend instead of athena defending hers then cosmic turnabout would have hurt.
i can't be bothered to come up with a whole plot but i would say the case wouldn't be space related, and would have a situation where someone confesses for someone else, as all the major cases do. we finish with a successful not guilty verdict and clay inviting them to his space launch (this would give athena a more concrete reason to be at the space centre and make her a more plausible suspect later)
cosmic turnabout
okay. here's where i start rearranging things. the first change i would make is instead of skipping straight to trial, keep the investigation segment for this one. it wouldn't have to be long, but i think instead of waiting until right at the end to reveal why apollo quit the agency, it would have been way more effective if the player sees athena lie.
think about it. by ace attorney convention, the defendant's always innocent. as players, we know this, and i never doubted athena's innocence for a second during turnabout tomorrow. what an insane metagame would it be if the player also doubts athena's motives. if we have to do the same mental gymnastics that apollo does. it would actually introduce something new in this game that's a fresh and interesting take on the ace attorney concept.
first trial can proceed the same way, but during the next investigation segment i would split it in two- in one half we play as athena and phoenix, and in the other we play as apollo and trucy, while they discover stuff like the footage of athena leaving the space museum for example. again, this makes the player suspicious of athena along with apollo.
but then you might think, okay but when athena gets accused who is going to defend her?
turnabout tomorrow
this is where there would have to be some mixing things around and a good dose of ace attorney bullshit but in turnabout tomorrow i would remove edgeworth entirely (i'm sorry i also thought the wrightworth banter was entertaining but in the interests of sticking to our core theme) and have apollo be the prosecutor. aura likes him and he has a reason to think athena did it.
then athena has no lawyer friend left to defend her (insert line about her being all alone and having no allies) but i would have blackquill act as her defence attorney. yes he's a prosecutor but we've had a prosecutor do the defence before and it's not even a real trial. because athena and blackquill are both suspects in metis' death there would have to be some shuffling while they work on defending each other. i would also have phoenix as the hostage in this situation rather than trucy, so he can offer support to the defence over the phone or through a robot, but this is still athena's case, and her moment to shine.
i'm aware this is a wild shuffle, but if i stick to my idea of this game being about the relationship between apollo and athena, the last trial should be apollo vs athena. it's not just about the truth of the case, it's about them breaking and repairing their trust. all those lines about how prosecutors and defence attorneys work together to discover the truth would be so sick if they were about the friends who we've been watching grow apart as they mend their relationship by discovering the truth.
after the fulbright reveal they can still swap out. blackquill becomes the prosecutor and apollo and athena take down the phantom together on the defence, reaffirming their friendship once again.
yes i mostly removed phoenix and completely removed edgeworth. that's because their presence was extraneous to the game's plot and themes and every time either one of them made a comment about the dark age of the law i was seized by the urge to punt my computer into a wall.
i did enjoy some parts of dual destinies and from what i hear the production was a bit rushed and all over the place- if capcom really did want to leave aa4 behind i really wish they'd put more thought and time into making this a good standalone game, instead of. constantly bringing back OT characters to overshadow the ones we already had.
#the transition to 3ds was tough on everyone huh#side eyeing professor layton altho that was nowhere near as egregious#at least we have the crossover#ace attorney

If I were to write an Ace Attorney adaptation series-
Mia would be a major focus of the first half of the first season, having a plotline of investigating Redd White and Bluecorp. We see her visiting her comatose boyfriend Diego Armando in the hospital, developing her as a hero of her own story before her death in the seventh episode. The early episodes examine her spiritual powers, showing her meditating and seeing different spirits as she does so.
The first season ends with the resolution to Turnabout Goodbyes, and it is then followed up on with a movie telling the story of "Rise from the Ashes".
Season 2 has mentions of police investigating a forgery ring prior to The Lost Turnabout. The first part of that case's episode focuses on Phoenix investigating the case and very nearly solving it aside from identifying the real killer (and only because he never met the witness) all in one day of investigation. Then Wellington knocks him out and gives him amnesia, forcing him to piece it all together again in court. During the investigation, Phoenix points out the originally-unmentioned contradiction of the victim supposedly writing something in the sand with a broken neck.
When thinking of who could have been responsible for killing Gregory Edgeworth after determining that the bullet that Miles had accidentally fired had been removed from the scene, Phoenix reflects on what Grossberg told him over an animation of the Revisualization sequence from the Apollo Justice trilogy. He and Maya realize the truth at the same time.
Season 3 includes an arc prior to the Recipe For Turnabout arc which adapts the Professor Layton vs Phoenix Wright game. Prior to the London trial, Phoenix notices that the Magatama has run out of spiritual energy, explaining why it does not work while he and Maya are in Labyrinthia. This also keeps him from seeing Espella and Darklaw's Black Psyche-Locks (as well as possibly hundreds or thousands on the hearts of everyone else in Labyrinthia). Pearl recharges it after this arc.
When Gumshoe rescues Phoenix and Maya from Furio Tigre, he arrests the loan shark for assault and battery rather than let him go free until Godot summons him to testify in court.
The Season 3 premiere has Phoenix tell Maya how he met his mentor on the anniversary of Mia's death, with input by Marvin Grossberg providing insight on why she personally took the case despite her trauma.

Spoilers for the Knights of the Zodiac live-action movie, for the five of you who care.
I'm legitimately intrigued by what little we get of Nero in film, and what could imply given the general lore of the series. What stood out to me:
Marin, who is stuck on a mystical island for vague "destiny says so" reasons (honestly it's just an excuse for why she can't help in the climax, and gives Seiya and Saori a safe place to retreat to once all is said and done), knows of him, telling Seiya, "I knew of a Knight once who fought only for power -- the strongest of Athena's knights, the Phoenix."
He uses his Phantom Demon to interrogate a guy, but doesn't get to use it in the fight with Seiya. He also doesn't lose that fight; it gets interrupted and he's blown away by Athena, opening the chance for him to still be a pretty brutal threat in the future.
One of the things he does for Guraad is build this big, mystical-looking device that's intended to like, suck out Athena's godly cosmos and destroy her. He describes this as "half" of his plan, with the other half being to steal the gold cloth that Guraad is using as... I think a power source? It's not exactly clear and doesn't really matter, point is that she has it and he takes it during the climax.
And then there's the details I mentioned in my last post about his "Humanity needs no gods" line and the earring that looks an awful lot like Shun/Shaun's triangle-tipped Andromeda Chain.
So like I said, it could very well be that he's there in his standard capacity as an agent of Sanctuary, sent to kill Athena and reclaim/steal the Gold Cloth for himself. But, like... imagine how interesting it would be if this version of him, for example, remembered that childhood encounter with Pandora, the one where she seemingly merged the soul of the god of death with his baby sibling. That would put a whole new spin on why he would've specifically learned/researched/developed the god-killer machine, and his particular drive to prevent them from returning to the human world.
Having Nero/Ikki know about Shaun/Shun's connection to Hades the entire time and be doing everything he can to prevent it would be a great way to work one of the most popular parts of the mythos more cohesively into the narrative. It'd also be a nice thematic parallel with what the film already does with both Sienna and Patricia, and provide a good reason for this version of Seiya -- who doesn't have the childhood friend connection with the other bronze saints/knights -- to find comradery with Shun and, through them, come to understand Nero.
IDK, I think it'd be really interesting. It probably won't happen given how little buzz this film has been getting but a fan can dream.

Cydia Plus is a modified version developed by the Cydia Plus team. This alternative to Cydia caters specifically to the latest iOS versions. Random question since I know you like to have opinions, do you think phoenix should’ve gone back to lawyering after aa4? I feel like he would’ve been like nah I’m too old for this shit
OH MY GOD ANON. OH I HAVE A BIIIG OPINION ON THIS ONE.
listen. i have seen some people say he shouldn't have become a lawyer again and that it was more of a marketing strategy than a rational decision for his character, but phoenix didn't just become a lawyer, he became a mentor by becoming a lawyer.
phoenix's character arc is many things, but mostly, it's about finding yourself. at the end of aa1, we see quite an unexpected phrase about phoenix promising to figure out who he really is in the next cases, which doesn't really confirm to the other messages and ideas in the game. it makes sense later on though: he loses his memory in aa2, recalls his memories in aa3 and aa4... well, aa4 gives us a lot about his identity. either way, phoenix starts off as a guy with a savior complex, a guy who doesn't quite know who he is and a guy who doesn't know how to live up to his dead mentor and be something good. he learns, he gains a better sense of his identity and gets rid of the said savior complex, and then goes through a very huge development on his lonesome own, gaining awareness of the system and the world around him, how he can change that world and what really matters in general.
the only thing that remains, the thing that he carries with him is the desire to help those who are abandoned. in aa4, the entire legal system is: dark, cold, and full of despair, so he pulls it out of it's misery. he adopted trucy, for god's sake, that trait of his is something he will never get rid of because it's at his very core, it's just that now it's more healthy and reasonable.
so what does a man like him do, when the scene is set and there are brilliant young minds to be helped? what does a man like him do, when he remembers mia fey, a woman who worked alone for years to expose a man for his crimes, but took him in and became and excellent mentor? what does he do, when the only way to help people that he knows is from the defense's bench? he gets his badge back. he pretends to be clueless like in the old days, "whoopsie daisy, athena, i don't have a clue what evidence we should present... maybe you try?", because he's kind of an asshole and because it works, he is there as backup, as someone to rely on, but not too much, only if things get especially tough. if he wasn't a lawyer and simply acted as a consultant, could he really provide that much of an assistance in times of need? would he have the power? the authority?
to me, the badge was a formality, a tool, but a strategically necessary one. phoenix goes from mentee to loner to mentor, not from lawyer to poker player to lawyer. it's a progression that makes sense and that could have admittedly been executed better, but it still makes sense in my mind.
also, mia and phoenix parallels are very important to me, okay.

An analysis of props and scene design in "Ruyi's Royal Love in the Palace (2018)"
This 87 episode TV series tells the tragic love story between Ru Yi and Emperor Qianlong, and the fog of history creates infinite imagination for creators. Although the stories of Emperor Qianlong and Empress Ruyi in the Tv seires are mostly fabricated, art originates from life, and the plot design in the play conforms to the logic of character development and artistic reality (Yang and Chen, 2019). More than a dozen palace scenes were designed at a cost of billions of yuan, providing the audience with a unique experience.
Exquisite design of hairstyle and props (1) The meaning of flowers: In ancient China, flowers were used to describe beautiful women, and they also represented the image of women are gentle and beautiful. The two main types of flowers that appear in this TV drama are plum and skyflower. Red plums represent the elegant character of Ruyi. The green plum potted plant gifted by Emperor Qianlong to Ruyi, which looked like a withered branch after the two split, bloomed again after Emperor Qianlong's longing for Ruyi and his tragic passing. In addition, there are mostly scenes with snow, and there are many blooming sky flowers in these scenes, which symbolize the character of Ruyi's forbearance.

(2) The change in Ruyi's hairstyle design symbolizes her different levels The character design in this TV drama is also very beautiful, especially the hairstyle design of the protagonist Ru Yi. From the beginning of the first episode, Ru Yi's hairstyle was a long braid with very few decorations on her head. She only had a little peach blossom decoration, because at this time, Ru Yi was only in her twenties, and the makeup artist, through exquisite skills and handling of Ru Yi's hairstyle, made the actor in her 40s change from a visual appearance to a 20-year-old. After living in the palace for a few years, Ruyi's status also improved, so her hairstyle became more complicated. At this time, she no longer had the long braid style she used to have, but instead wore the exclusive "Qi tou" hairstyle of the imperial concubines on her head, and she wore decorative items such as jade butterflies, glass flowers, etc., all of which were made using traditional Chinese craftsmanship. Finally, when Ruyi became the queen, she wore a decoration called "Dianzi", which was like a hat. This unique hat was decorated with many phoenix shaped decorations, which also reflected her noble status. So Ruyi can also witness her growth from her hairstyle design.

2.Unique ideas and renovations in architectural space Ruyi is a pure and kind character in this TV drama, as she only pursues love with Emperor Qianlong and does not consider intrigues, which also leads to her tragedy. Although the plot setting of the drama is plain, the content is not vulgar and contains certain thoughts of Buddhism and Taoism. The philosophical thinking of emptiness and nothingness reflected in the plot setting is different from the simple and rough way of "tooth for tooth, eye for eye" in most palace fighting TV dramas (Xu, 2020). So the most complex and exquisite palace in this plot is the Yikun Palace, where the protagonist is like Yi. However, in history, the Yikun Palace in the Forbidden City of Beijing was not as complex and exquisite as in TV dramas. Firstly, in order to shape the image of the protagonist, the design of the Yikun Palace in TV dramas has doubled its area based on the historical prototype of the Yikun Palace. The entire palace, under the treatment of the TV drama's color scheme, is dark blue, representing the sinister and unfathomable nature of the palace, It also implies the final tragic love of Ruyi. Secondly, in order to demonstrate the identity of Empress Ruyi, the director designed a large white peacock woodblock behind Ruyi's throne, and the white peacock also represents the phoenix, symbolizing the majesty of the empress. Distinctively, there are many potted orchids placed in the Yikun Palace, and the entire palace design revolves around the theme of bamboo. For example, bamboo is carved and decorated on the screens in the main hall and on the curtains in the side halls. Bamboo represents noble character, which also symbolizes the protagonist Ruyi's adherence to pure love and kind and noble character in the dark palace.
In short, in this TV drama, the protagonist's props and scenes related to Ruyi are based on reference to the art history of Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty, and many innovative designs are made, which are worth appreciating by the audience

10 Characters From 10 Fandoms
Tagged by @walkwithursus (you're really providing me with these games XD)
Tagging: @a-n-n-i-m-i-a and @nanukanal and a whoever wants to do it!
Blackbeard (Our Flag Means Death): Well, we're hopefully still at the beginning of his journey, so...
The fact that he's a fearsome pirate who always longed to enjoy the soft things in life and fell in love with the rich man who showed him that it is okay to like soft and pretty things and then gave up everything to save that man? I mean come on, just thinking about it makes me want to hug him.
Scar (The Lion King): Okay, so...I don't like TLK. Not even as a child. I always thought the story is stupid (and yes, the whole Shakespeare subtext obviously went all over my head back then but as an adult it didn't make it any better for me) and I think I've only seen the movie fully once. But Scar, he's a different story. He's evil but he's eloquent, cunning and sarcastic. He makes the movie somewhat enjoyable and I don't care what he did, his death hurt me, even as a child.
The Joker (DC): Okay, I don't really know much about the DCU but Joker is a character I always come back to. No matter whether we're talking about Heath Ledger's Joker, Joaquin Phoenix' Joker, BTAS' Joker or Telltale's John Doe. He's so fucked up, but I love how many different sources give him a tragic backstory. And his absolute disregard for heteronormativity and his general queerness make him so interesting and I wish more people in the DCU would play with it and see the opportunity.
Gregory House (House, M.D.): I don't even remember how many years it's been since I watched House but that man stayed relevant throughout my life. And you're gonna see a pattern here when it comes to my favourite characters: He's harsh. He's sarcastic. He's an asshole. He says he doesn't care. But he does. He says he doesn't care if people leave him. But he does. He fakes his death to support his dying best friend. And I enjoy that he treats medical cases similar to how Holmes treats his cases. Obviously.
Marty McFly (Back to the Future): Of course, I like my 80s boy. Looks cute, street smart, is funny. He's a comfort character for sure. Also, if I had to name one character that evokes gender envy in me, he'd definitely number one.
Harry "Bunny" Manders (Raffles): The reverse Watson to the reverse Sherlock Holmes. He's adorkable, ends up as a criminal due to his own foolishness and Raffles' manipulation. He knows Raffles is sometimes annoyed with him, he wants to make himself useful but actually makes matters worse most of the time, but in an endearing way. He's incredibly loyal, will follow Raffles everywhere, even to war where he has to witness Raffles' death. It's basically a Sherlock Holmes AU but more gay because there's no way in hell Bunny doesn't love Raffles.
Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad (Assassin's Creed): I was really thinking between him and Ezio because they both have amazing life stories. Assassin's Creed was probably the reason why I started playing more video games. If Altaïr's story wouldn't have been so interesting I wouldn't have stuck with it. Malik first making him see his wrongdoings, forgiving him later and becoming his best friend also plays a big part in the development of his character. But I love that they didn't make him perfect. In Revelation we see that he's still making stupid decisions that cost him dearly and he spent his life becoming a better person and a worthy mentor of the Brotherhood.
Sherlock Holmes: I mean what can I say...I don't even remember for how long I've loved Sherlock Holmes but there's a calmness in the face of danger about him that comforts me. He appears cold and calculating but he cares about the people around him. He also follows his own moral code, no matter what Scotland Yard expects of him. And he's my go-to character when I want to give a basic and famous example of asexuality to people.
The Doctor (Doctor Who): Do I have to decide for one? If so, I'd probably choose Nine. I only got into DW last year, although I always wanted to watch it because David Tennant was in it. Hilariously enough, it was Christopher Eccleston's Doctor who I became especially fond of. It's his harsh demeanor sometimes, a man who just came from war, but the joy he also displays sometimes (e.g. when everyone gets to live) and the way he, more than anyone else, needed a companion, Rose, made him very dear to me.
Tony Stark (Iron Man): Of course, who else. A man who was a weapons dealer and ended up giving up his life to restore half the universe. He has one of my favourite character growths. At no point is he perfect, he has weaknesses, he makes mistakes again and again and he knows that he seldom has the moral high ground. But he seems to love unconditionally. He forgives. And he gives life to beings that love him in return. He provides for the people he loves, deals with PTSD, makes the world a better place, all while keeping a smile on his face and having a smart remark in any situation.
