what have you found to be the best remedy for hens laying small and/or soft-shelled eggs? I work for a facility where the pigeons are only fed gamebird chow and small amounts of finch seed as treats. they're not even being offered grit. I'm sure this is somewhat to blame for the poor quality eggs, but all our veterinarian has recommended is getting the hens more sunlight to increase their vitamin D. unfortunately it seems like im the only staff member who has taken the slightest interest in our pigeons, so getting approval to get them on a higher quality diet is going to be difficult. what kind of changes would you suggest?

Oh, I have been looking at this one for weeks now while answering shorter, less energy/time consuming asks and had to keep putting off because there is SO much to unpack here that I was going to have to sit down and really take my time with this one.

Game bird crumble is designed for galliformes that need a higher percentage of animal protein than a chicken to really thrive.

Turkeys, Quail, Pheasants, guinea fowl, and peafowl, who are all omnivorious, but whose diets lean way more towards the insectivorous/carnivorous side.

Pigeons need 0% animal protein of any kind.

They are strict granivores.

It honestly sounds like this is a primarily poultry focused facility, and the pigeons are just getting what ever they keep on hand.

What are the pigeons even there for?

Pretty much no one takes pigeons to see a vet unless a valuable show bird or racer catches a novel disease that threatens to wipe out a flock that may have many thousands of dollars tied up in the stock.

Even then, breeders will kill anything that begins to look sick and go through hundreds of dollars of over the counter treatments for months before consulting a vet.

Usually as an absolute last resort once they get overwhelmed with the rate of spread an number of subsequent deaths, or the flock is of a breed so rare as to be functionally irreplaceable.

Many breeders of anything less than nearly irreplaceably rare will just let the entire flock die and start over with new stock with out ever consulting a vet.

So I can certainly excuse the vet for not having had the opportunity to learn how different pigeons dietary and environmental needs are from galliformes and parrots.

Get the birds on a good seed blend.

if Versele-Laga blends are too expensive, any varied wild bird seed blend with at least 5 different grains, legumes, and seeds smaller than black oil sunflower seeds will be infinitely better for the birds than game bird crumble.

Royal Wing Classic Mix is not a complete diet, but it's a good base that any small enough legume can be added to to balance it out.

Purina makes an excellent fully balanced pellet food that comes either formulated for breeding birds or racing birds.

Oystershell for calcium is an absolute must!

And I can guarantee those birds are mineral and vitamin deficient AF!

Start giving them the calcium in very small doses!

Birds that have been without too long will gorge, which can cause a blockage in their throat.

And a mineral block for horses (absolutely NOT crumbled!) will be the safest way to make sure they get salt and dietary minerals with out being able to fatally OD on the salt.

Their beaks can't crunch through anything. They can only scrape off a little at a time, and it takes so long off of a mineral brick that the need is satisfied long before they approach being at risk of ODing on salt.

Be prepared.

This change in diet WILL cause a population boom.

Healthy pigeons are EXTREMELY fertile!

Ooooh, that whole thing, uhhh, ooof, uhhh. I do have feelings on it, but it's hard to say, 'cause I really don't like the fan bases much lmao

They're always rowdy and annoying, and I don't even think they try to enjoy the other products, just so they can say something negative, because they play it like it's real life important stuff and they have to be a team about it. With is an obnoxious way to socialize involving entertainment products.

I like both. But, WWE was my childhood, so I lean that way more often, but I really do like both.

When Money in the Bank was happening and John Cena came back I was watching, and when AEW Rampage's second episode (I think it was the second one) came around and CM Punk came back I was watching.

Don't watch either anymore because of circumstances.

And I'm not saying they're both constantly great either. In fact WWE has been letting go of so much talent it's vastly uncomfortable given their excuses of budget cuts, while making record amounts of money for themselves. And not releasing talent that want to be let go. It's extremely crummy.

So WWE is pretty scummy. It may be what I watch more often, but it is a scummy company.

But at the same time I think AEW has the more annoying fanbase which kind of brings down the mood watching it a bit, because all they do is shit on everything else and any differing opinions. There are WWE fans that do the same thing, but I don't think the amount is nearly even from what I see.

So honestly basically what I think is, I prefer WWE because it's what I'm used to, but it's a scummy company. AEW has more solid wrestling and consistent quality in product but something about it is lacking the gravitas that should really sell it, Chris Jericho's weird hair dye is distracting, and AEW's fanbase is more annoying.

Though the entire fight thing is just obnoxious. Like, they take it way too serious. In the end they're just shows. Shows with history that's fascinating as hell. But in the end, that's all they are. So to take it so seriously in the way fans tend to take it, makes it frustrating.

((Under a cut bc LONG. I’m also posting this from mobile so y’all know the drill if the cut doesnt work))

Said it before and I will continue to say it: Wolfman is the only one I think should write for Raven. So Obvsly the New Teen Titans comics are a good place to start, especially since that’s going Back To The Beginning and covers a lot of the storylines that the cartoon later adapted (excuse the assumption, but I’m definitely gonna go ahead and guess that you’re probably a fan of the cartoon right?). You’ll be in for quite a long read, as the first run of NTT (1980) is 40 issues long while the second run (1984) is nearly 50!

An important aside: Cartoon Raven and Comic Raven are NOT the same. Not entirely, and especially not in the way fanon often portrays her (usually pulling solely from the cartoon & if from the comics, not the ones I’m personally a fan of). Some fans that go in to read for Raven are Surprised by this and either ignore it or fall even more in love with her as a character. I’m in the latter camp, obvsly. Which makes me Valid lmao this isn’t to say that people pulling from other writers ARENT Valid, but considering Wolfman & Perez’s intentions with her as a character and how it’s been skewed and broken over time, I feel like there’s a big disconnect and misunderstanding for those fans. Even if we don’t agree with it, we should be mindful of original Author/Artist intent, and understand what it means when we either ignore instead of criticizing it.

That being said:

If you’re looking for something shorter, Wolfman wrote all 3 of Ravens miniseries! DC Special: Raven has art by Damion Scott (his style took me awhile to get used to and I didn’t originally like it but it’s grown on me a lot since then. So keep that in mind. It’s... a shock but Interesting to me) her second mini takes place in N52 continuity but works very well as a stand alone. Can’t remember the artist there, but I didn’t mind the art TOO much. The stories in both those minis were Trigon-free too as far as the plot went, which was a VERY NICE break. (correction: Raven (2016) (aka White Carnival) actually takes place in Rebirth continuity, not n52 or at least in that weird time between the two? minor but Important detail if keeping continuities straight if ur jam. it still works as a standalone story tho imo, but i guess it was referenced/tied into the Teen Titans run from the time)

My all time fav mini though? (None of you will be surprised) Raven: Daughter of Darkness! The art’s by Pop Mhan, and Wolfman was finally given the opportunity to spread out a story across 12 issues and ooof! The sheer POTENTIAL that he brought along in it! Even after 3-going-on-4 whole decades of writing this character he brings something so consistent to her, and a few fresh things too it’s just *chefs kiss* really nice. I’d recommend maybe reading White Carnival (the n52 Raven miniseries) first, since it’s referenced a few times in DoD, but it’s not absolutely necessary. It’s just cool to see continuity connections even if it’s something as simple as across N52/Rebirth lines.

Not going to speak to the quality of the stories, but Death in the Family and Under the (Red) Hood are obviously regarded as defining stories for Jason. There’s plenty of comics to read leading up to DitF and I would want to encourage you to look up a reading rec list as I don’t have one with me to recommend unfortunately! I tried to start RH&O but just... couldn’t quite get into it, and also had other things I wanted to read first anyways haha. So I won’t speak too much on that run just yet.

As for other batfam members and comics specifically regarding them as a group. I’ve greatly enjoyed No Man’s Land (1999) both as a giant crossover event and for introducing and bringing together a lot of the family (including introducing Cass Cain ofc!). Batman & Robin: Eternal (2015) was actually one of the first storylines I read when getting back into comics, so I have a bit of nostalgia associated with it. Although overall I DONT quite enjoy it as a Cass Fan now, its still interesting in showing a bit of how the batfam mixes and meshes together and the plot is just.... a fuckin rollercoaster lmao. Not necessarily a fun one for everyone tho. Once again it’s a n52/Rebirth Story iirc, so keep that in mind if you’re worried abt what Canon you’re reading in!

I don’t have many more to rec batfam-wise, other than wanting to encourage reading Cass’ Batgirl run from 2000. Its quintessential Cassandra Cain & TONS of fun, at least mostly in the first half haha. Latter was a little *wobbles hand*. I’ve spoken on another blog abt Steph’s time as Robin in War Games, but that’s def one to save for after you’re a bit more versed in these characters I’d say bc it’s.... Big Oof.

(referring to this post) Truthfully, I haven’t thought about it in such concrete terms before now! Of course I have thoughts like “X character would be more likely to do Y to show their affection,” and there are some things I think certain characters are unlikely to do, but I haven’t ever divided it up in the words/gifts/acts/etc categories so concretely before. But I can sure try!

Hmm. I agree that I think Odin is a Words type person! Lots of long speeches, usually unprompted. Not sure if he’s more Touch or Quality Time (thinking of how he wants to have reenactments of battles and stuff together with family, so I’m leaning a little bit more towards Quality Time), but still good stuff! I also agree that Niles and Xander are more Acts people. Not that they’re bad at verbalizing, because I can think of a few times Niles was very upfront with his feelings (though perhaps Xander does struggle a bit more, what with the fact even his siblings find him rather unapproachable) but because it’s easier to just Do Things. Words may be flimsy for Niles sometimes. How can you trust those without substance to back them up too? Xander, though he may be able to have a good conversation when he wants (such as helping Sakura be more comfortable speaking in their Support) is definitely more of an Acts person. Hence why he literally memorizes every single detail about his siblings in his and Camilla’s Support, though nobody knows about this since he never really mentions it. He’s definitely a “let his actions speak for himself” type person. Quality Time probably wouldn’t be remiss either, but I don’t think he’d have a ton of that as crown prince or king, so almost definitely Acts.

For the others! I think Laslow is a combination of Gifts (canonically collects souvenirs in the DLC to remember the festivals and gives one to Xander in hopes he’ll be remembered, even if Xander thinks its a normal rock) and Quality Time. Tea time is both an excuse to help his anxiety/shyness and also to spend time with people. “We only have a limited time in this world, after all,” (as he says in a Support.) 

Leo is also a Words person like Odin. He usually seems to try to understand people via conversation in his Supports and helps fears/worries with words rather than any one event, iirc. Maybe a little Acts? But mostly Words for sure.

Camilla is for sure a Touch and Quality Time person, I think. The way she dotes on Corrin says as much. Also I can’t imagine she wouldn’t want to spend a lot of time with her SO and be affectionate. Selena may be the opposite since I think she’s more Gifts (her penchant for shopping and her matching jewelry stuff in her and Beruka’s Support) and Acts (though Camilla would definitely go above and beyond for those she loves too. It’s more of Selena just offering a lot.) Beruka is more Acts, I think? She doesn’t care for material stuff or express herself through Words without prompting a lot. She’s not really touchy-feely either. So probably Acts (since those speak louder than words, lol). 

Anyway, these are all just guesses, but hopefully you got a kick out of them, anon!

In Which Harvey Continues to be the Best Goddamn Thing in This Show

I was a lucky son of a duck and managed to get this reaction while the episode was airing live on FOX last night.  For episodes 3-12, I will be waiting for Hulu to receive them because of an upcoming spring semester at college.  So for episodes 3-12, I will be in the dark until Friday or Saturday (so no spoilers from y’all).

Also, on TV, there are so many GOD.  DAMN.  COMMERCIALS.

AN:  I managed to record my reactions to this episode and hopefully I can transcribe what I said into this post.

So far, again, this feels like a foundational episode.  It’s just like “OK, we gotta work on this, we gotta make sure this is safe,” and yeah.

I also wanna know what kind of crack these writers were on for this final season.  Tze Chun had the good shit; I dunno about the others.

The Journal Journey Part 36

 It has been a couple month, I think, since we last took a ride on the journal journey.  Today’s quest is from back, 3 years ago, and combines my notes from February 21st & February 22nd, 2017.  Enjoy the ride and hopefully some nuggets.

 From John Maxwell:

-          “Always reach for a person’s heart before you reach for their hand.” – I interpret this as connection.  How can I connect with this new person I am meeting? There is always and opportunity to have a connection with someone but doesn’t happen all the time.  Actually, it can happen very infrequently.  We tend to be on our own path and listening to our own frequency. That is unfortunate.  I’ve said you never know who you are sitting next to and what they are dealing with; you may have the answer to the question they are looking for; or you might just have that smile that turns their day, year, life around.  Being kind, I believe, trumps everything else.  I don’t think it takes much to be nice and compassionate toward others.  Sure, it can be hard and there may be many out there that frustrate the heck out of us, but how much work does it really take to be kind?

-          “What is the joy in this moment?” – I think every moment has one or at least, we have the option to chose to pull out joy in every moment.  Sure, there are many dark moments and circumstances that suck. However, we do have the choice to think about the joy in that period.  In a world where we have so much bad happening, we do have the ability to look at the good.  We get to decide where the joy is and if we celebrate it; no matter how bad that moment may suck.

They are someone’s grandmother or grandfather.  They are someone’s mother or father.  If it where my mom or dad I would love for that person to help them out or at least offer.  I need to do that more; not just with folks that are my mom and dad’s age but everyone. And, not just those that look like they need help.  We all need help in some way, sometimes we just need to be asked!

-          “The quality of your life is directly related to the amount of uncertainty you can live with.” – Ooof – good one here.  We are conditioned not to like uncertainty.  We are conditioned to do the safe, comfortable thing.  However, I’ve found the more I can let go and just act, let things play out, the more joy I typically find.  I talked about this last week in the blog as it relates to letting go of expectations.   I mean, how much is actually for certain anyway? Not much anymore so why go through each day with an expectation or certainty that this, or that, will or will not happen.  I think it can be exhausting!

-          “Working to mitigate risk to zero delays you from getting started.” – I see this far too often in my professional career.  Actually, I see it far too much in anything really.  Listen, we can all come up with great excuses why we can’t ask that person a date today, or we can start journaling today, or we can start playing the guitar today!!  “I just want to make sure I am ready & I’ve done all the research.” You are not going to be ready and you will never do all the research.  So, let’s stop kidding ourselves and dive into uncertainty (see above 😊) and just give a shot.  What the hell?  Typically, the worse thing that can happen is we embarrass ourselves!

-          “Do shit you love.” – I’ve had this conversation with a number of people in the last few weeks. It relates to our children and expectations with them, their futures, college, and all around moving through high school.  Having a sophomore and eighth-grader and friends in similar circumstances, SAT’s & ACT’s happening, college letters coming, and all that stuff going down, it can be overwhelming thinking about, what school, what major, what job, what do I want to be when I get older?  Honestly, where my daughters want to go to school, what they want to do for their profession, and all that stuff, that is their business and not mine.  It is their dream and their mission; I am just here for support and guidance, if and when they ask.  I want them to grow up to be great adults and that is my mission and my responsibility.  Where they go to college, if they go to college or what they do for their living is up to them.  My work now is speaking to them NOW, about finding what it is they truly love and are passionate about and dive in headfirst.  If they don’t know what that is right now, cool, go out and stick your hand in as much as possible.  Go out and experience that which you think is cool, awesome, scary, hard and interesting. No sense doing something for 20 years only to find out you were meant to be doing something else.  I want them to determine that for themselves now when it is much easier to make the adjustments and change.  Little tougher when you are 40 😊!
