Lockdown Diary Part 1

A personal account during the lockdown in the UK due to the Covid-19 outbreak.

23/03/2020 8:30pm Boris Johnson, UK Prime Minister, gives a live address to the nation to, effectively, put the country on lockdown to stem the spread of the deadly coronavirus strain, Covid-19.

Many of us have been self-isolating for days but this latest development within the UK in reaction to the pandemic feels very serious and very scary. I decided to keep a simple diary and where better but online.

Day 1: Last night Boris called it, today we’re doing it. I had started working from home (wfh) yesterday as had most people at my work (RCI)..last week I had been preparing laptops as fast as poss for everyone. Even just today, the idea of going into work seems alien and dangerous. Now lockdown (ld) means that it would soon be illegal to do so unless utterly necessary.

Online, FaceBook (fb) especially, is awash with reaction…a lot of calling out people who are out and about in greater numbers than 2, which is against ld rules.

Day 2: Just trying to let work occupy my thoughts and time which is easy enough ‘cos everyone I support (IT engineer) is new to wfh and is having teething problems with all the new laptops. Meanwhile, I keep abreast of comings and goings online…actually socially interacting more than I might otherwise, weirdly

Day 3: Highlight of the day is an online quiz organised by a chap called Jay Flynn on fb…a bunch of us took it as individuals while chatting on Messenger while Jay streamed quiz over fb live and YouTube. It was a good crack and I had two cans of Coors Light which got me pissed!

Day 4: Work is still mad - so many people with IT issues wfh…it’s challenging trying resolve all these probelms remotely but I am rising to it. I actually enjoy it. It satisfies my want for problem-solving.

The ld is in full swing but it’s very early days. The news is dominated, obviously, by Covid-19 and the ever changing stats of infections and deaths. Today, for example, the USA took over, from China, as the country with the most infections. I know there will be an end to all this and I am determined to be there, going out, getting pissed down the pub, gigging, shaking hands with my mates, hugging anyone and everyone who’ll let me - it’ll be a proper party. But I am filled with a dread that it’s going to be a fucking long time coming.

This evening was spent virtually with Foggy, Ham and Andy P…doing a quiz - a rehearsal for Foggy in the hope of doing one to a wider audience next week. It was good fun and great to have a few beers chatting with everyone, Later I video called Fog and we drank ‘til gone midnight, putting the world to rights. I was well pissed.

Day 5: First non-work day of the ld. Housework, daily walk, out for supplies (drop a script order off…queuing outside boots for 15 minues!, bread, baccy and booze). This evening, I’m listening to the next album in NME list of 1985 albums I’m working through - Grace Jones Slave to the Rhythm…fucking pain in the arse ‘cos it’s not on Spotify so I am searching for each song, in order, on YouTube. Plus eating and drinking, of course. Quick video chat with karen and Grace, Dan in the background. I wanted a tin of kidney beans for chilli but Karen hasn’t got one ffs. Burger it is. They are all playing scrabble - I’d love to join in…

Day 6: A quiet day…housework, cooking, daily walk. Highlight was a half hour chinwag with dad who, as I would expect, despite his 84 years, is coping and doing just fine. Most other people with a dad that age would have, on top of their own concerns, something more to worry about during this crisis….for me, it feels like I’ve got someone to turn to, should I need to.

Day 7: Work is starting to feel more routine but it’s a long way off being in the office, which is never routine anyway. That may seem surprising since I do IT support but it’s a varied role, especially at the modern dinosaur of an organisation that is RCI. I try to be as disciplined as possible but I miss not dressing for work, not driving to work, not needing to actually prepare lunch (until lunchtime). I don’t actually need to shower every morning. I don’t think I have to ordinarily but do because I’m mixing with others in the office. I certainly don;t need to now. I only mix with me, so showering becomes a chore but I’m doing it every other morning in the name of the aforementioned discipline. I am worried how long RCI can keep going before laying staff off. I dread being out of work full stop, let alone during this ld, or even thereafter. I think the economies of the world will need time to recover so finding work will be tough à la 2008. I think, if lay-offs were to occur, I’d be in real danger. Last in first out and all that. But, I’ll cross that bridge if and when I come to it.

Day 8: At work there was a large online meeting whereby the MD told us that RCI are going to furlough some staff. The UK, and Ireland staff will be consulted this coming Thursday and Friday (it’s Tuesday today). I shall be reading up on what the furlough arrangements are in the UK due to Covid-19. I know the government have set aside some money, I need to know what I might get paid and how to claim it. In the past, when I’ve been out of work, I’ve been entitled to jack shit other than JSA, This time around, should I be laid off as I expect, I might not have to eat into my savings, fingers crossed. Meanwhile, I have decided to knock up another blog with a photo of myself each day of the ld (from now on) - it’s a sister to this diary.

Day 9: Actually typing this on day 10. Yesterday was a strange day as I contemplate being furloughed (hope for the best, expect the worst)…I’d be paid 80% of my wage according to what the government have said to assist in the Covid-19 crisis…so, were that to be true, I’d be OK money-wise, although still earning way less than I want to prepared for retirement (I am currently still waiting for feedback on a pay increase request I put in at work last year!) I’m more worried about how I would fill my day if I wasn’t working. So, that being said, I flopped and moped about all yesterday evening after my daily walk and, without achieving much at all, didn’t find time to write this entry on the right day…so maybe I can fill my days without much effort!

Day 10: I was furloughed today, starting 5pm tomorrow (Friday 3rd April) and it’s fucked me off. I know it’s not personal but, actually, do I? They’re cutting back the Kettering Desktop team by one, redacted It seems obvious to do this by the ‘last in, first out’ maxim but what about money? others are on more than me (redacted). What about offering it voluntarily - others might go for 80% pay for fuck all - others have family at home to occupy the day (redacted) . A little bit of me thinks it might be preferable furlough me (redacted) …others seems to be a favourite and that annoys me. It annoys me because I think I shoot myself in the foot too often. I’m too vocal about some of the (redacted) decisions and practices at work, plus other reasons that I know but can’t be bothered to type. But, my point, is I don’t play the politically correct, corporate game and therefore forget to look out for my own best interests. FUCK.

So, as of tomorrrow evening, I’ve no work to do. The challenge will be to find a way to occupy my day. I’ve already registered to volunteer for the NHS during the ld…let’s see what becomes of that. And I’ve signed up for web development course. I’m going to get fucking pissed this w/e, starting early tomorrow evening.

Day 11: It’s day 12 as I am writing this entry…that might tell any reader, and remind me, that I did as I promised and got pretty drunk. I spent the day geting my work affairs in order i.e. clearing down support tickets assigned to me. I did a good job, nothing left to handover to the remaining team (Jim, Cristina and Mark) and onky one ticket put into the assigned pool. Some nice converstaions were had with associates, many of whom are, too, being furloughed. Nice words were said and Jim and Mark both were supportive in conversations and messages - they both know I don’t wnat this and, I think, they are both relieved it’s not happening to them. 5 pm arrives and I shutdown my work laptop for the last time for at least 12 weeks. After my daily walk, I video chat with Karen, crack open a beer, make Chinese chicken curry (fucking loads, fucking tasty), finish watching The National Theatre stream of One Man, Two Guvnors (really good, see twoinchreview) and the caught up with, and talked bollocks with Andy, Marc and Ham - we tried getting Rog in on it, no dice. I then watched The Heat (I fucking love that film), ate some more, smoked several single-skinners, drank, in total, three cans, seven bottles. I went to bed shortly after 4am. I felt resigned to my furlough and pleasantly wasted.

Day 12: A subdued day…didn’t wake until gone 1:30pm. Jaded but not really suffering. Mooched about, social media, listening to music, watching telly, farting about on the iPad. My daily walk, over the last fews days, has taken a twist…I am trying to run parts of it. Mainly short distances, 80-100m (I estimate) three, maybe four times. It’s fucking knackering me out. I used to run everywhere when I was a teen. Attempting to run now just makes me feel fucking old. Well, I am, so that’s about right.

Day 13: Another day like yesterday except I got up at 10:30 and didn’t feel jaded. The subdued feeling comes from the realsiation that the ld isn’t being treated as seriously as it should be across the board. The news and even posts by locals on FB (Oundle chatter group) suggest groups still meeting up. The weather this w/e has been a factor - 17°c today. I think a total ld will be enforced soon and that would fuck me off. My daily walk is pretty essential for me nowadays not least for the ‘good for your soul’ benefits that dad has always mentioned. Even today’s walk saw a car parked at the gates to the field on the way to Ashton and people on a blanket soaking up the sun, dogs off their leads and people (looked like a family) playing footy on South Road field. Individually they are not presenting any danger, what with the fact they are either living together or far away from others. But they are flaunting the rules and the more that happens the less likely they’ll carry on getting away with it, which will mean total ld for all! I finished the 50 1985 albums today. It mostly confirms to me that I only listened to two albums released that year (Kate Bush, The Waterboys) any other vinyl I spun would have already been in my collection pre-85.

The sausage casserole I made for tea was fucking lush - 4 birdeye chillies. I saw and spoke with Dan and Grace this morning, they were just coming back from a walk. I am pleased to fuck they are together and sorted out the issues they had earlier this year.

Day 14: My first day proper of furlough. Finished my two inch review of the NME 50 albums. Long chat with Rita, quick one with dad. Messaged Sam about Romiley’s present - she’s 10 on the 9th April (Thursday) - ordered some Lego thing from Amazon. Turned the car engine over (reminded myself the driver-side wing mirror is fucked) and moved it to another spot in the Co-op car park - bumped into Matt T. He’s struggling - no work coming in and he can’t claim any of the money on offer ‘cos he’s not being totally honest about his circumstances - made me realise I’m not that bad off…..but I feel depressed about it all, especially with the news that Boris has gone into intensive care.

Day 15: I began a diploma (?) course on web design with Shaw Academy (it was free). They have actual classes (which are recorded) which you schedule yourself. The first one was, I have to say, really interesting - I look forward to continuing. On my walk today, I saw a car parked at the gate to the field at the bottom of Riverside Close; it was branded with Cunninghams Estate Agent with a 01536 number. I am pretty sure I saw the driver walking her dog (unleashed) on the field. I took a photo and rang the number. Yes, I ratted the culprit out…fucking annoys me that I had to. Better than reporting to the police, all round. Hopefully her work will put a stop to her doing it and, the more people that adhere to the rules without the police getting wind of infractions, the more likely we’ll be able to continue to exercise away from home.

Day16: More online learning including checking out other sites (pluralsight) for more learning opportunities. Coded my first web page, basic but mine, in HTML and CSS. A few beers & smokes and watching White Boy Rick in the evening, interspersed with the usual social media / messaging shit, incuding this entry, of course!

Day 17: Typing this on Day 18. After a few beers last night while chatting with Fog (twice - the first chat ended with him ‘having’ to go to bed. Later, I noticed he was commenting on FB, so I video called him…round two of chatting!). I got quite fucking pissed. Bed around 4am.

Day18: Up at 1pm. Long walk today, 7 km. Anything over 40 minutes, I’ve realised, results in a hypo.

Day19: Well, having gone to bed at gone 5am I got up at nearly 1pm feeling far better than I should have. Breakfast followed by a walk, spoke with Karen (mowing her front lawn) and Dan. He and Grace have split up which is sad news but he seems OK. Went shopping (milk and sweets) and ended up with a shit load of booze, the post of which on FB was quite amusing. Homemade burgers for tea (they’re in the fridge as I type) - gonna try and make Five Guys…

Day20: The Five Guys burger attempt didn’t go as well as I wanted. I think less than 5% fat mince just doesn’t bind that well. However, I managed to get something resembling a burger into the bun and, with cheese, hot sauce and jalapeños, it was tasty enough. More of the same when I finish typing this entry. Strange Easter Day today, as I knew it would be. The best thing I saw today was a video Tom posted on FB of him and Molly doing a mashup of Starsailor and George Michael - Tom on guitar singing the former, Molly singing the latter. It was fucking fantatstic.

Day 21: Easter Monday. Surreal…it’s feeling very surreal now, this lockdown.

Two things that bother me right now:

i) The political point scoring on FB. I get it, I really do…people like to bring up ‘obvious’ failings in the party’s mistakes. For example, Marc posting comparisons between UK and Germany’s figures of cases and deaths due to Covid-19. I doesn’t make impressive reading for the government and it should be held accountable. But not fucking now!

ii) Will they introduce rotational furloughing at RCI? It’s only been a week, 11 to go. And, it bothers me that I was furloughed rather than Mark. Pathetic of me, I know! But, should it last the 12 week stretch, I want to go back to work and let someone else have the chance to have fuck all to do all day! That being said, I’m still learning web design through Shaw Academy. Even today, bank holiday, I revised Lesson 2.

Day22: Nice catchup with Dad today - he and Rita seem to be more than OK with lockdown. I actually cannot wait until we can meet up at The Farmers again!

Day 23: While I had a Corvee engineer come to the house today to do a gas safety check (I waited upstairs while he was here, self-isolation and all that), and had the fourth online web design lesson, had a trip to Boots to pick up insulin, got milk from Tesco’s, saw American Rachel and had a chat (while we both queued to get into Tesco’s) and had a very nice walk along a different route from the norm, in the pleasant sunshine and watched Contagion on Netflix - all today - I AM STILL BORED AS FUCK!

Day 24: I had plans for today - revise the last two lessons of Shaw Academy’s web design course, investigate a ethical hacking course, do some washing, clean upstairs (or at least the bathroom) plus all the usual stuff. Then, as a reward, have some beers. Well, guess what. I am not having beers this evening. I managed the laundry. Plus I manged to subtitle my YouTube perfect snabby video (something I have been meaning to do for a while, but, come on!) It took me fucking ages. But it is funny! So, a fucking far from fruitful day. Plus the government announced at least 3 more weeks of lockdown. There’ll be loads more, I reckon. Tomorrow…I promise I’ll be better tomorrow…

Day 25: I did do better! Firstly the Corveee man fucked the boiler which I only noticed late yesterday but still managed to get sorted today. I did some excellent revision and learning of HTML (tags) and CSS. I cleaned the bathroom and hall. And I discovered TikTok (fucking excellent dancing and funny vids) plus discovered a new FaceBook word game (Sam sent me an invite) called WordBlitz and I am pretty good. Having beers now (nearly 11pm).

Day 26: Today I found myself calling 111. I had a pain in my side last night, I thought it might be constipation! That not being the case (!), today I went to 111.nhs.uk and, following their questions, it recommended I seek out a GP straightaway. Once I let the website know that is not possible, it directed me to visit walk in centres. I spoke with Karen thereafter - for advice about whether it’s a good idea to enter such an establishment - I really don’t want to increase me chances of catching the Covid-19 virus. Karen recommended ringing 111 since the website does not take into account my diabetes (so bloody sensible a suggestion!)

After ringing and answering many questions, the lady said she’d get an OOHS GP to call. The doctor called soon after and it seems most likely I have a grumbling appendix (chronic appendicitis) and to ring again (well, 999) if the pain becomes unbearable.

I now have a bag at the ready for hospital which I really hope I don’t have to use. Today, I have, therefore, done fuck all - not even a walk - but I am having a beer now (midnight) and shall attempt to sleep as well as possible and hope this pain subsides naturally…

It occurs to me that I turn to Karen when things become flumoxing - my excuse, this time, is she works at the surgery but that was mere convenience.

Day 27: My ‘appendicitis pain was the same when I woke up (10:20) but no worse. I managed to change bed clothes and clean my bedroom but didn’t risk a walk (in case something drastic happens when I’m in a fucking field).

People’s responses and questions online have been heartening (Rachel Harris, Susie Grange, Bethan, Jo, Tracey Weber, Debbie De Prisco and, not least Dan). As the day progresses, I feel better but not right. I spoke with Dad about it and, as I told him, I shall ring Oundle GP tomorrow. Meanwhile, I did Sam Clew’s FB Live quiz, which was good, and am now having a beer or two.

Day 28: The pain in my side has definitley diminished. I called the Oundle surgery today to talk about what treatment I should have for ‘grumbling appendicitis’. The reseptionist organised a call back from a GP - Dr. Cash. Basically, he said he didn’t believe the condition existed, that acute appendicitis doesn’t happen after the age of 35, and ‘his gut felling’ is it will all just clear up.

I shall seek a more sensible diagnosis after lockdown and hope it doesn’t flare up again before then.

Day 29: I sent an email to the team at work today (Jim, Mark, Cristina and Sueanne). I hadn’t heard from them and I wanted to check in and, also, make a point that I will be posing the ‘rotational furlough’ question to HR at some point. It was as I wrote the email that I realised it’s only been two weeks and two days of furlough, and that includes Easter! Seems so much fucking longer. Anyway, everyone replied and it was good to hear from them….Mark came off his bike and broke ribs and collarbone! Lesson 5 of the Web Design course with Shaw Academy. It’s becoming apparent that, if you don’t pay for the course ‘toolkit’ it’s all rather patchy! The instructor dives into lines of code (HTML, CSS and Java) with no explanation….I feel like I did on the ifrst lesson of further maths ate Stamford School! I shall soldier on and beef up the missing parts with W3Schools (a great website and learning aid for coding). Two quick points. I am no longer running any part of my daily walk; hurts too much. I am addicted to Wordblitz and TikTok. Day30: I am writing this on day 31, I just forgot yesterday! It was a non eventful day. I did watch Midnight Run (again!) and had a couple of midweek beers though.

Welp, it seems like the time has come to address one of the gnarliest and most frequently asked questions of all time. To be clear, that's gnarly for me and to me, respectively. I’d also like to memorialize a recent road trip. Before I start, though, let’s get grounded in the current context: it’s late summer IN MARCH; We are headed intro autumn, and there has been enough early snow that Mount Hutt was open for skiing (what?!?!). I started my new job at Jade Software; the kids started a new school year in January, with Anily headed off to her first year of high school (5 years of high school here); both kids have changed to a new soccer club, which is much closer to the house (thank god); Anily made the A team; James is playing soccer and basketball and ridiculous amounts of Fortnite. It’ll soon be a year that we’ve been here. We are right in the middle of a full 12 weeks of visitors and trips from/to the US. And in case you were wondering, the cat has managed to escape through open windows and doors a few times, but he’s always come back so I guess he’s ours for real :-)

I still haven't submitted my dreadfully complicated tax return. I am seriously procrastinating, and having visitors and reasons to road trip is helping/hurting.

So! BFGFAQ (big fat gnarly...you get it): It’s the political one. From the Kiwis this usually comes in the form of “are you a Trump refugee?” or “what do you make of what’s going on over there?” And even if it’s not an explicit question, how can I possibly answer the most frequent Q of all time -- “why did you move to New Zealand?” without considering how the political landscape of the US factored in? I mean, you don't just up and move across the globe and leave a great place and a fabulous life without at least a mental checklist of pros and cons. At least, most of us wouldn't. And if you’re a grown-up (which we sadly have established that I am) and a contributing, aware, member of society (which I would argue that I am), your list must include considerations of the way your taxes are spent and people are treated in the place you live and how the outcomes of those things impact your lifestyle, your life, and the lives of other human beings. Right? Right!

MAJOR UPDATE: A handful of days after I posted this, someone (likely an asshole white supremacist) shot and killed people in a CHCH mosque. The city is still in lock down as I write this. It is terrible and sad that things like this happen anywhere, ever. And I just want to say that as you read the ideas below, I’ll be watching closely the response of the NZ government.

If there’s one thing that moving around the world to a place you’ve never been before, with a small family and no friends, and taking up a real life with a paycheck and a rent and a job does really well, it’s create an opportunity to reflect on the differences between where you were and where you are. It also is extremely useful for considering, in a very real way, how the values you hold are (or are not) reflected in both a political system and a local way of living. You really notice how political decisions, socioeconomic forces and cultural norms trickle into investments, infrastructure, bureaucracy, language, aesthetics, and interactions that impact you as you move through your day-to-day and learn how to get things done. And because you’re an observer who is trying to become an insider, you may operate with less bias and pre- disposition to judge, more of a natural curiosity and interest in gathering information and then assimilating it and deciding over time. Chalk one up for perspective! Happy to say this was the kind of experience and growth I hoped we’d all get through this adventure.

Now, from the Americans this question usually comes in the form of something like “OMG, are you so glad you’re not here for this?” or “are public healthcare and lack of gun violence really as amazing as they seem from here?”. Because, like me, most people I talk with on a regular basis feel something like this:

So while I am not here in NZ without political bias or personal ideas of what’s right, wrong and important, I am more open minded to considering what’s good for this country and this context, and I have a stronger appreciation for the complexities of things all across the board since I’ve now gathered more data and had more experience.

So, my American friends, in the interest of helping you draw some of your own conclusions, here is a segment I like to call Fact, Figures and Feelings:

America is amazing. You have SO much of everything. Including great food, tons of money, vast political power, and a really noticeable amount of homeless people. I mean! When I was in San Jose I felt so conflicted by both where to go for every meal and the fact that to get where I wanted to go I was uncomfortable with my own feelings and anxiety about possible conflict with the homeless and mentally ill folks I passed constantly. And it was often while I was walking into a convention center full of people trying to give away millions of dollars, listening to speakers who had made millions through technology. And while the dog adoption station on site and the furry friends in it made me feel a little better in the moment, could there be anything more cliche? Embarrassing. And yet is it fundamentally bad to have cute dogs making rich people feel good and maybe getting adopted? No. But it maybe uniquely American.

Know what else you have a lot of, USA? DRAMA. Seriously. The NZ morning news is usually about 25-50% reporting on the shitshow that is US and Brexit, and it turns out that when people say “if you get homesick, just listen to the news” they are correct.

So what about NZ? Well, when you live in a country with SO MANY FEWER (like so many!) people and a much smaller GDP, your reality is very different. Not so loud. Not so busy. Not so many options. Much much simpler and frankly, it feels more sane. But we know the Mexican food sucks. So... six of one/half dozen of the other? This is what I am saying: I cannot tell you if Enchiladas and Aveda products make up for dealing with the opioid crisis if you’re seeing it every day, or if leaving Tito’s vodka and a much higher salary on the table is balanced out by the fact that police here in CHCH carried guns last week and this is how people think about it:

FUN FACT: During the “summer holidays” (December-Jan), the morning news show on public radio literally went off air. They replaced it with special summer programming, mostly dedicated to personal profiles and reviews of music and activities. The only headlines they read each day were almost entirely about the US (shut downs) and UK (Brexit). Apparently it’s possible for time off to extend to politics and news. WOW. Just notice how you feel about that.

Now, NZ is certainly not the rainbows and unicorns utopia we liberals like to think a place with a public healthcare system and affordable education and far fewer guns will be -- there’s a growing imbalance in the distribution of wealth, the abortion laws are archaic, affordable housing is a big issue, nurses and teachers strike because they don’t get paid enough.

Politics was not the only motivator for our move, but we considered it -- sure seemed like a nice time to be out of the US, and it is. It’s certainly not a clear #NZFTW-100% -they -nailed-it situation, though. Every place and every system has its bad sides, and I have a lot to learn to really decide how the pros and cons balance out. All I know is that it’s really, really nice to be in a place where the political conversation is much simpler and more focused on politics and their outcomes on people than on hateful rhetoric. I am disappointed when I think of the lost opportunity due to the amount of resources you are wasting on unproductive, unkind conversations in the USA, when you have so much. I feel bad for not being there to help stand up for the rights of people I believe in, but when you don't wake up angry every day at the headlines and the people you share space with, when the dialog is a little more open and productive, when the headlines are not so likely to be violent and sad, you start with a much better mental health baseline. You just can’t eat a great caesar salad whenever you feel like it, and it’s expensive as hell to leave the island and you don’t get paid enough to be able to do it often, which may really stress you out. For now, I’m really ok with it. But over time will the flaws in the NZ system (every system has them) outweigh the positive? Do the opportunities in the US outweigh the negative?

In the interest of letting you form some your own opinions: Take a look at the the top headlines of 2018 in New Zealand. They include a pregnant PM; visits from Ed Sheeran, the Royals, and Obama; a handful of natural disasters; a bunch of news about other countries and sports; and the BIG BIG Drama which “unfolded over several deeply uncomfortable days” and ended in a minister being briefly admitted to a mental health facility and broad discussions about mental health. Consider if the US was as concerned about its politicians’ mental health when they did crazy shit :-).

So far this year Lime Scooters (people get hurt on them, and people break the rules and double ride with no helmets -- gasp!) and the potential of a capital gains tax have been in the news pretty much daily. And that’s about it. Boring? Yes! Nice? Also yes! Did you know NZ is the only country in the OECD to not have a CGT? Are you impressed with my knowledge of initialisms? Worldly is the word you’re looking for to describe me.

I know, it looks like I am pooping on a trail, but I am actually doing squats mid-hike IN A SKIRT. Probably gives me enough credibility to become a world leader, or at least present these numbers for your consideration:

I think I mentioned in an earlier post that one of the things we’ve been doing a lot of is road tripping. Not so different from Seattle, eh? True. But since we can surf so close to the house and we have such a beautiful country to explore and a slightly less active social life, the road trips are more frequent and more varied. As we are all happiest when we’re in the flow and hitting the right balance between challenge and success, I guess it makes sense. Because if I do say so myself, we are damn good at the road trip, but there’s no way to have 2 to 6 people in a small space with a lot of stuff and a windy road ahead and podcasts and music to choose without challenge.

My most recent road trips were extra awesome due to the fact that Leslie Lapham (AKA Alex, AKA LL) was here and we took off on a few fun adventures. Now, Leslie is great for a lot of reasons and it was super fun to have her here for 5 weeks...and one of her best qualities, she takes great pictures!

Here’s what I like to say about our first trip: it started with a bang and ended with a bee sting.

Here’s the bang -- this is what happens when some dickhead decides to pass you on the right at high speed on a highway while you are TURNING RIGHT into a campground:

So, that sucked. Especially because aforementioned dickhead did not stop to see if we were ok, just left us there in the dark on our own. Luckily the Taupe Donkey was still drivable and packing enough duct tape to make it work. So, off we headed from Kaikoura to make ourselves feel better in the vineyards and wineries of Marlborough.

The Cloudy Bay Winery was not a bad place to spend an afternoon!

Watson’s Way (not pictured) was a really weird place to spend a night though -- we were basically parked in a gravel parking lot in someone’s yard. But man, did we have some good food!

Although oops, I accidentally tried to take a grapevine as a souvenir. And I swear this was before I even did a tasting!

After wine tasting and an amazing dinner at Arbor, we headed to the Marlborough Sounds, starting at Havelock, the mussel capital of the world!

We did a cool tour on the mailboat, which literally delivers mail, packages, animals, groceries, and god knows what else (possibly the odd tourist by accident?) to the residents of the remote 300 or so bays in the region, which can only be reached by boat.

We ate a lot, of course. But we ordered more than we could eat.

After that we headed south on the inland route and camped overnight at the Tasman Lakes National Park.

There were eels, pretty views, and random dock yoga.

And last but definitely not least, we topped off the trip by meeting Jason at the always fabulous Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools. What a drive to get there, too! I did get stung by a bee while I was soaking, which was a total and pretty painful shock, despite the signs warning people to watch out for bees. Little fuckers!

After that, back to co-working and a couple weekends in CHCH:

Then...Lois!!!

Now this blog is not about all the visitors and it’s already so long I dare not start going on about having Leslie and Lois here together. Suffice it to say we had some fun times, some great food, and after 8 hours in the emergency room we did a quick road trip to Oamaru. There were PENGUINS!!!!

There were penguins!!! We saw them waddle onto the beach at dusk after swimming 50K through the ocean all day. Alas, you cannot take pictures of them, so you’ll have to settle for 3 Generations of Wachsmuth Women in the Wild until next time. XO.

The struggle of collecting nerd shit in Perth

The expansion of people’s interest in collecting retro games has led to a lot of issues for those already entrenched, and those issues are only multiplied in particularly strained markets like what little we have here.

I can’t put my finger on exactly why everyone’s suddenly so into collecting these days, though I suppose there are a few potential options. COVID, of course, means that everyone’s a bit more into things they can do at home, and why not relive some childhood memories while stuck and depressed? As well, this may just be a time-localised phenomenon, as people around my age, just starting to have really disposable income, are actually buying the things they wished they could have as a kid.

Either way, it’s a bit shithouse doing it here, and here’s why.

Much of the issues one has for this sort of thing in Perth are magnified versions of what you have Australia-wide. Perth is sort of a microcosm of Australia’s isolation, being the one city truly separate from the others, and that is reflected in it’s niche markets.

I guess the key issue is availability. Smaller population, less sales, less things to scoop up 15-20 years later. Everything kind of boils down to this- there are cities in the USA that have a higher population than here, so the numbers are going to be smaller. One would assume that this means numbers of buyers are also smaller, but keep in mind there are going to be some folks shopping from elsewhere. Maybe. I imagine shipping’s a nightmare.

The lower supply Australia suffers from was not just a problem now, as in the past, there were games that just didn’t release here, or did so in a highly limited fashion. This contributes heavily to the rarity of particular items, as certain games (including a particular GBA series I’d love to get my hands on) are just nigh-impossible to find at all, and command a daunting price if they are.

Even though prices are cheaper overseas, shipping is enough of a nightmare to make the point moot. We are basically as far away from the USA, the source of the majority of English carts, as you can get, and the UK isn’t much better. Even if a cart that’s $100 here is only $50 there, we’re still paying that back in shipping costs, to the point where the risk just isn’t worth it. Shipping from Japan isn’t nearly so bad, but unless you can read the language (or are immensely familiar with the game) you’re going to be SOL for actually playing the thing. Which is a shame, because the price difference there is actually significant.

This is of course not mentioning the number of stores that just won’t ship here.

Another issue is the lack of local stores. Op Shops (secondhand/thrift stores for the non-aussies) very rarely carry electronics on account of certain laws regarding liability, and game cartridges fall under that umbrella (not discs though, so if you’re after, like, PS2 stuff, you might be OK). It is utterly frustrating seeing the mass of online posts about thrift store jackpots and knowing that will never happen to you. Pawn shops are limited in number as well, though to be fair, they kind of suck anyway. And the actual specific retro gaming shops are not only rare (I think there are like, 5 in the whole city), they’re also pretty much in the middle of nowhere for most people with one (overpriced) exception (that has screwed me once), necessitating a long drive, in addition to whatever you’re paying. There’s like, one of these shops I actually like.

I’m about done bitching, the irritation from sifting through a lot of listings today has passed. But I can give a couple of upsides we do thankfully get here. The first is the aforementioned Japan thing, since not only is shipping not too bad from there, a lot of Japanese products have ended up in our markets somehow, and they tend to be cheaper. Like, down to a fifth of the price sometimes.

The other is actually kind of funny, it’s bootlegs. Particularly with the Pokemon GB/GBA/NDS games, there are more and more of these popping up and people selling them, whether knowingly or unknowingly, leading to a lot of people getting screwed. The thing is, just about every one of these bootlegs is ripping off the USA/NTSC region’s sticker, so if you see an AUS region cartridge you’re pretty much guaranteed a genuine article. Which is just kinda hilarious.

We’re such a small market that they aren’t even trying to rip us off, I guess.

Bitcoin’s Wild 18% SURGE! Trump Gives 2 Trillion More Reasons to Buy Crypto in 2020

Today in crypto, bitcoin has had a wild day surging by 18 percent. Almost touch seventy-three hundred dollars. But will the failure to close above seven thousand dollars bring out the bears? Or are we setting up for a bullish breakout? Another two trillion dollars in spending has been proposed in the United States. Exchanges are seeing a massive influx of new buyers. Capital controls have an inflated. This week in some of the world’s most vulnerable countries, which just serves as a strong reminder of why we need bitcoin so desperately. The latest news from crypto dot com with 2.0 gets a little bit closer. The crypto laugh. This is where the use of a scrap of the hottest and all of the latest happening out there in the wild, wild west of crypto land. By the way, if you are new to crypto, then check out my course. Now let’s go ahead and take a quick look at the charts here to get started off with today. Bitcoin oh, it’s had such an interesting day, it just reminds you of the craziness that Bitcoin is capable of in both directions. Obviously raging from a low of around 60 $100 dollars all the way up to seventy-three hundred dollars before cooling off for a wild 18 percent move on the day. Now, over on the daily charts, we can see that Bitcoin is in an ascending channel right now. Now, today’s big price move actually tested and rejected at the centre line of that channel. Now, we could see a pullback as far as 60, $100 test. The bottom end of that channel, especially if the current price does not hold that the time recorded this video anyway. We’re kind of sitting right around some key support levels. However, the daily is currently forming into an ascending triangle as well, which is likely to break soon. The failure of yesterday’s price, though, to break out and hold above the top line of that triangle at the seven thousand dollar mark. That’s a little bit disappointing. But in the next 48 to 72 hours, we should get the answer about whether or not we’re going to have a definitive breakout above or below this key line. Ascending triangles, of course, are more bullish patterns and tend to break up. But will we suffer from that weekend trading malaise, which will draw us back down and invalidate that triangle? Time will tell. Now a solid candle closes while the seven thousand dollar mark that would definitely bullish in the short term for bitcoin. That’s why I’m hoping we’re going to be seeing playing out here. But let’s just keep an eye on this as the weekend moves forward. Remember, though, we are still six weeks out from the bitcoin, having even though not like who is talking about it is still coming. We could indeed see the speculators come out in force to play both sides of this event, bumping it up and then potentially shorting it back down afterwards. So keep an eye out for that to happen, too. And while the price action the last 24 hours, that’s been a bit of fun. Yeah, absolutely. But fear is still the leading force in the crypto markets. The Bitcoin Fear and greed index is still way down at fourteen mean that we are far from being in the clear when it comes to price safety. So keep that in mind. Next, up, some quick data to share with you. There has been a big surge in new buyers coming into the markets of last week. Not no assured, a few different data points supporting this. We’ve new data points to share with you as well. Crack and release the report. And they said that they saw an 83 percent increase in users over the last couple of weeks. Packs full doubled its signup rate and almost all the exchanges are seeing a heavy bias towards people buying, not selling. The decentralized exchange is also doing well with volumes hitting an all-time high of six hundred and sixty-eight million dollars in the month of March, with volume up a whopping 53 percent since the all-time high in February. Yes, that volume is still less than buying does in just one day, but it is definitely showing that there is really an increasing amount of people who are choosing to do their asset swaps on-chain and without using centralized exchanges. We still have a long way to go. There’s no doubt about that. But this is definitely a good trend and I’m excited to see where it is going now. So this story is about Egypt. So the Central Bank of Egypt just put the daily limit for individual withdrawals at 10000 Egyptian pounds or around six hundred thirty-five dollars from your local bank. And you’re only allowed to take five thousand pounds or a little more than three hundred dollars out of an A.T.M. Well, these are definitely not the strictest capital controls that I’ve seen over the last couple of years. They are still pretty tight. Capital controls, just another day of banks telling you when and where you are allowed to access your money. But it’s the bank’s money now, and they’ll tell you when you have a little sliver of it. And another story about capital controls. This is also out of the Middle East from Lebanon, where banks have now halted all dollar withdrawals. So the previous $100 U.S. limit has been reduced to zero. So the Lebanese are now trapped in their failing fiat. It is their only option. Bitcoin, Bitcoin, Bitcoin. Look, Bitcoin may not fix everything, but bitcoin definitely fixes these issues. But you must be prepared. Don’t wait until you’re standing in line at a bank waiting for six hours for them to give you a scrap of bread from the fat cat bankers table. You have to be ready for this to happen. Capital controls. They are not some faraway thing that only happens to other people. They can happen to anyone, anywhere, at any time. And those with bitcoin, when that happens, will be in a league of their own. And as this crisis continues to unfold, people living in the West, they may be in for a rude awakening one of these days. I hope not. But very, very possible. And in other Bitcoin news, GitHub has announced that they will be burying bitcoin code inside an Arctic mountain to ride out the next 1000 years. That’s pretty cool. I like that. That’s a cool story. It’s not just Bitcoin either, but it includes Bitcoin among a lot of other really important open-source code. We also have other cryptocurrencies in there amongst a lot of other stuff like the area and even Dogecoin made the cuts less kind of cool. Maybe if our society collapses and we enter, you know, a total apocalypse kind of event, then archaeologists, they’ll find out about bitcoin in a few thousand years. Bitcoin will live on bitcoin to the moon in the year 3000 after the apocalypse and DOJ going Oh dogecoin is only worshipped like a god. One Doge equals one doge. One Doge equals one doge. Okay, now let’s move on to some theory news. If 2.0’s phase zero multi-client tests net will likely go live in April, at least according to Retallack, the eith 2.0 specifications they have just undergone a major audit by technology security firm Liste Authority. Now the firm did highlight the protocols peer to peer messaging system and the block proposers system as two areas that do have potential security vulnerabilities. Obviously, this is why test nets are so important. So you can get these things ordered. You can run these things in the wild without risking billions of dollars with the value. The test nets are going to be an incredibly important step in moving us towards the future of a theorem in an ETHE 2.0. It’s coming. It’s coming. It’s gonna be massive when it hits, but good things do take time. And finally, the big news of the day. Are two trillion dollars in spending. I can’t even keep track of it at this point. So crazy. 6.2 trillion over there for the stimulus package, 2.5 trillion over there for the IMF, a couple hundred billion over there. Who is keeping track anyway? Probably going to be a lot, lot more. And know these figures, they’re not going to be the end of this. We’re gonna see trillions more before this crisis over because this crisis is really just starting to get big. I hope it doesn’t go that way, but it’s looking like it’s only a Trump proposes a huge new spend of two trillion dollars that will be in the form of an infrastructure bill to rebuild the overly aged American infrastructure, of course, to create a load of jobs along with that. Now, got two things to say about this. One is, yes, thumbs up. The U.S. definitely needs to upgrade the roads, bridges, airports, all of that stuff. So this is actually a good thing to see the government spending money on this important infrastructure. This definitely needs to be done. But on the flip side, how does this actually get funded? Well, one of two ways. That’s could be another two trillion dollars in debt on top of nearly 24 trillion dollars in existing debt. There already is. I mean, hey, why not just make it twenty-six trillion? It’s all funny money anyway. This kind of debt in the service of that debt. It’s crazy. It won’t be long until we see interest payments on the debt in the United States actually exceed the revenue of the government. That’ll be a crazy situation. And the other option for funding a two trillion-dollar infrastructure bill, just print more money. Why not just printed? It is the answer to all of the problems. Just print that money, baby. Either way, this bill gets funded. It will have a negative effect on the dollar, either by inflation or by increasing debt. Remember, there is no ceiling for the price of bitcoin because there is no bottom to the burning pit of Fiat. And look, a jobs stimulus bill for infrastructure, it’s probably really, really gonna be needed, by the way, because the USA has got to do something to bail them out at this point because the unemployment numbers, they just keep rolling in. And it looks really, really bad. It’s not just the USA. Lots of places all over the world, but the US. Wow, this is crazy. In the last two weeks, nine points nine, five million people. Have filed for unemployment in the U.S. A. These are unprecedented numbers. This is a SU normy of just financial Armageddon. We’ve only had the first couple of waves come in. There are more destructive waves at the back of the tsunami still coming. And we have to keep it real here, too. There is no way that this unemployment crisis, that it will not be hammering the stock markets in the months to come. There is still a lot of room for lots and lots of pain in the markets. And as far as the crypto markets are concerned, well, what have they shown us over the last month? Junior/7Q7JN are currently active from Embangweni Mission Hospital at

the Loudon Station in Malawi as time and power allows. Bill states that

he will operate as 7Q7WW during his free time with his friends 7Q6M (Don/

K6ZO) and 7Q7JN (Junior). At the main station, they are on CW and SSB at

various times, usually on 20, 40 and 80 meters. At their residence, they

have a modest station and wire antennas for FT-8. For 7Q7WW QSLs, please

8R, GUYANA. Rudi, DK7PE, will be active as 8R1CW from Guyana between

September 21-28th. Activity will be limited to his spare time on various

HF bands, using an Elecraft KX3 with new Juma 1000 amp into wire antennas.

AFRICAN TOUR (Reminder). By the time you read this, Pista, HA5AO, will

once again be active as 3DA0AO from the Kingdom of eSwatini (Swaziland)

until September 30th. He will be active from the Mountain Inn Resort at

Mbabane. His plan is to start to set up antenna and station on the 16th,

and he can be expected on the air by the evening. The station set up

contains an Elecraft K3S with a KPA500 and fed into a vertical antenna.

Pista will operate on the 80-10m bands using mainly CW and FT8 on the

higher bands. Pista plans to be active on September 21st and 22nd in the

All Africa DX Contest as a Single-Op/Single-Transmitter/CW-Mode/All-

Band/High-Power entry.

After the eSwatini operation Pista, HA5AO, will arrive in Lesotho on

the 1st of October and plans to stay until October 19th. He will again

use the 7P8AO callsign. Flight and room at Molengoane Lodge is also

booked. Due to other commitments the operation from Lesotho will take

place during his free time mainly on CW and FT8 on the higher bands.

C21, NAURU (Update). By the time you read this, operators Yuris/YL2GM,

Jack/YL2KA, Kaspars/YL1ZF and Kristers/YL3JA will be active as C21WW (not

C21W as first announced) from Nauru (OC-031) between September 16-25th.

Activity will be on 160-6 meters, possibly 60m, using CW, SSB, RTTY and

FT8. The suggested frequencies are:

SSB – 3790, 7090, 14190, 18140, 21290, 24940 and 28490

* Dayton Hamvention Signs 5-Year Contract with Greene County Expo Center –

The Dayton Amateur Radio Association (DARA) has signed a 5-year agree-

ment to keep Dayton Hamvention® at the Greene County Expo Center. The

agreement was announced on September 9th by Hamvention General Chair-

town Dayton. Tim, K3LR, reports: UPDATE: After the 2019 Crowne Plaza

experience I conducted a thorough review of all available facilities

in the Dayton/Xenia area including several site visits. I also met

with key stake holders and they assure me that the security issues

with the Crowne have been dealt with. Local authorities have given

assurances that there will be improvements during our stay for 2020.

The adjoining parking garage work will be completed in time for our

arrival. Therefore contester activities will stay at the Crowne for

2020.

day – at the Crowne Plaza on Thursday, May 14, 2020.

in the engineering building. When the roads dry out, all our gear will

be moved to our operating sites and be ready for us when we arrive in
