My fellow American hobby bakers, demoralized by egg prices and scarcity and how you will make the American apple pie or the chocolate chip cookie, fear not. I have spent many years turning regular baking recipes vegan for my corrupt and traitorous sister who last week ate a salmon cream cheesed roll. There are many, many substitutes for eggs including but not limited to:
Mashed banana: best added to compliment flavors of whatever it is you're baking (peanut butter, chocolate) make sure it's MUSHY and ripe
Apple sauce: again, best with complimentary flavors (cinnamon, brown sugar) use unsweetened and have the rest as a snack
The big boy champ, ground flaxseed: flavorless, though it does darken your batter/ dough a bit. Bags found next to cornstarch and almond meal, etc. Instructions on how to use right on the bag! Make sure to let the flaxseed water combo sit in a separate bowl until it has the consistency of mucus 👍
Now with all of these you MUST add a bit more leavener, they don't have the lil bit of lift eggs give, so make sure you add a touch more baking powder. Sort of ok for brownies and cookies if you want them a bit more dense but KEY for cakes, quick breads, muffins and other things like that or she is gonna be SQUIDGY 🫡

alright, it’s late, let’s go. today was fine. I woke up at like 2 and of course my back still hurt in the weird way it’s been doing after I wake up lately, don’t know what’s up with that. but I got up and chilled out for a bit, before deciding to make a small batch of vanilla pudding, because I had an extra egg yolk from making the amaretti cookies the other day, and vanilla pudding is like, one of the only thing you can use just egg yolks here (the others being key lime pie and creme brulee, but that’s really just fancy vanilla pudding) and that worked pretty well. I also had like a tiny bit of cake mix left after using different amounts of it for different things, so I attempted to make a cupcake, but obviously getting the ratio of egg right was going to be very difficult, and the box says you can substitute greek yogurt for the eggs, and I happened to have some of that, so that’s what I used, and welp, that didn’t turn out very well. the cupcake did not taste good at all, and had a very potent sort of greek yogurt taste, but oh well, not a big deal. I went back to chilling after that, and watched the most recent episode of Chicago Med, so I’m officially caught up on it. after that I wasn’t sure what I wanted to watch, so I was browsing hbo max because why not, and I found the Adnan Syed documentary that I’d heard so much about but never was able to watch, so I decided that would be my entertainment for the night (not that murder documentaries are entertainment, but you know what I mean. I’ll be a little bit light on details here, but I text from my mom asking if I’d ordered a dominos pizza, and I immediately knew this was the work of that fucking douche Respondent who’s known for sending pizzas to people’s houses as a form of harassment (because apparently he’s a child in the 90′s?) and after we spanked his little ass at the court date, I really wasn’t surprised. It was sent to my family’s old address which they moved out of in November, so he must’ve found it somewhere online. so I just went through all of my social media and did everything I can to make it disappear from when you type my name into google, the only thing remaining being my imdb page, which is about me but I don’t actually have control over it, lol. I just don’t want him to get any more info about my Chicago address or anything. I emailed my boss about it, I’m not sure what’s going to happen from here, I don’t really want to taken off the case because I’ve spent so much time and effort working on it at this point and I feel like the client needs me, she was so happy when we won at the last court date, it was a big step forward but things are still so frustrating and I would hate to make things weird. sigh. anyway. After a few episodes I decided to shower and start getting ready for bed, and now I’m here and oh surprise surprise, it’s 3 am now so I’m going to bed now. Goodnight dears. Hope your had a great Saturday.

Whole food versions of decadent popular Halloween candy treats
Every year, Halloween parties see lots of candy corn, punch bowls and bobbing for apples. Miniature candy bars are all the rage with homeowners purchasing treats for the door to door trick-or-treaters. According to the product review website Influenster, each different state in the US has a Halloween candy that is more popular than all the rest. Check out a few of the candies and states on that list.
Alaska and Illinois – Snickers
Colorado and Ohio – Milky Way
Connecticut and Rhode Island – Reese's Peanut Butter Cups
Oregon, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Wyoming – Candy Corn
Looking at that list, and thinking about your own favorite Halloween candy, you may be worrying that it will be tough to come up with whole food substitutions for those and other popular sugar-filled and preservative-rich Halloween treats. Here are a few ideas of how you can create whole food alternatives to the teeth-decaying, obesity-promoting, unhealthy snacks and treats that are so popular every October 31. Replace Bobbing for Apples with ... Nothing! Bobbing for apples is a Halloween mainstay. A dozen or so apples are placed in a large bucket or basin filled with water. The idea is to bite into an apple without using your hands, by dunking your head down into the apple-bobbing water. Since apples are perfectly healthy whole foods, there is nothing to replace here. Get some organic apples and bob away! Replace Candy Corn with ... whole Food Candy Corn Cookies Healthy Whole food-friendly cookies can be made using some combination of coconut flour, almond flour, natural nut butter, eggs, mashed bananas, puréed pumpkin, raw honey, organic maple syrup, applesauce and other healthy, unprocessed ingredients. You can use Halloween cookie cutters to make cookies in shapes of witches, goblins, pumpkins, bats, and monsters. The three iconic colors of candy corn are white, orange and yellow. You can make a healthy whole food orange glaze by combining molasses or raw honey with the juice from carrots and oranges, or puréed pumpkin. The yellow of the candy corn color rainbow can be made with juice taken from grapefruits, lemons and ginger root, mixed with turmeric and the honey mentioned above or molasses. Stick a white potato through your juicing machine and combine that juice with, you guessed it, honey or molasses to create a healthy white glaze. Paint your cookies, and any Halloween treats like candy corn, and your kids may not miss the sugary, preservative-filled, toxic, bad-health-promoter that is traditional candy corn. Ingredients
2 sticks butter, softened
1.5 cups powdered sugar
1 tbsp vanilla extract
1 egg
½ tsp baking soda
½ tsp salt
3 cups flour
red food coloring
yellow food coloring
Directions
Cream together the sugar and butter until light and fluffy. Add the egg and vanilla and continue to beat until incorporated.
In another bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda and salt. Add dry ingredients to the butter-sugar mixture and mix until a soft dough just forms.
Remove dough from mixer bowl and separate into three equal pieces (use a food scale to weigh each piece if you want to be exact!). Mix together a little bit of red and yellow food coloring to make orange and then add the orange coloring to one of the dough pieces. Make another dough piece yellow and leave the third plain.
Place a piece of plastic wrap or tin foil inside a loaf pan and pat down the white dough inside. Place the orange dough on top (pat down firmly) followed by the yellow dough. Remove dough from pan, wrap up in either tin foil or plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight or for at least four hours.
When you are ready to bake your cookies, preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Cut 1/4th-inch slices down the width of the dough. Continue cutting each slice into small triangles.
Place triangles on a lined baking sheet and bake for 6-8 minutes until tops are puffy and bottoms are golden.
Replace Candy Bars with ... Sinful Decadent Healthy Bars without the Guilt Any number of healthy, whole food candy bar alternatives can be made with walnuts, cashews, almonds and other nuts, your favorite fresh berries, dates, puréed or mashed bananas and pumpkin, and many other whole food fruits and vegetables. Blend your dates and mashed fruit, and then combine this mixture with chopped or ground nuts, berries, and seeds. Form in candy bar shapes and place in the refrigerator for an hour. Making whole food versions of popular Halloween treats requires a little creativity and a lot of testing and experimenting, but it's worth the payoff when you know you are giving your children (and yourself) a healthy alternative to traditionally unhealthy Halloween candy. The Colossal Healthy Candy Bar is three tasty parts. First, the bottom biscuit layer inspired by Twix, is a mildly sweet, vegan and grain-free cookie made with coconut flour. It is crisp when it comes out of the oven, but goes pretty cake-y once it is combined with the other ingredients. Delicious nonetheless, and a pretty important counter-point to all the richness of the other layers. Second, the caramel-and-nut layer inspired by Snickers, but with a twist: instead of just using dates in the caramel, I balanced out the sweetness by adding a healthy dose of hazelnut butter. Wowzers. This was a very delicious decision. The caramel became far more complex, rich-tasting, and it is essential to note that this would make a fantastic spread or topping all on its own. If you do not have hazelnut butter, I recommend almond or cashew in its place. Instead of using peanuts, I used roasted hazelnuts to sink into the top of the caramel for awesome texture and crunch – almonds could also be used here. Lastly, each bar is enrobed in luscious, raw, dark chocolate. I usually use coconut oil in my raw chocolate recipes, but after reading the (incredible!) new cookbook Clean Cakes by Henrietta Inman I was convinced that using solely raw cacao butter was the way to go. It delivers a crisper finish and creamier texture. If you want to make things simpler and faster, feel free to use a ready-made bar of chocolate in this recipe instead of making your own. Raw chocolate is, of course, the healthier choice, but if you’re pressed for time or ingredients, this is a good shortcut to take. Coconut Flour Power! With so many diets and lifestyles focusing on gluten-free and grain-free eating, coconut flour is a wonderful option for many people. Made entirely from dried coconut flesh that is pulverized into a soft, fine powder, coconut flour is a nutrient-dense alternative that is increasingly available at health food stores and even supermarkets. Score! There are several benefits of coconut flour, my favorite being that it is remarkably high in protein and fiber. Translation: super filling and satisfying! It is low in sugar and digestible carbohydrates, and scores low on the glycemic index, so it a perfect choice for paleo eaters and diabetics. It’s also nut-free and non-allergenic. The flavor of coconut flour is slightly coconut-y, but not overwhelmingly so. I like it in things like these chocolate bars where there are many other strong tastes going on that overshadow the taste of the flour. If you want to compliment and enhance the flavor of the flour, use coconut milk as the liquid portion of a baked good. Seriously yummy. What’s the catch you ask? Well, there are a few downsides to using coconut flour, mainly due to its density, dryness, and lack of elasticity. It’s certainly not a flour to experiment with if you’re looking to replace wheat flour for instance, as the two behave completely differently (that goes for using coconut flour in place of almost any other flour, whether grain, seed, or nut-based). Coconut flour is also crazy-absorbent and needs quite a large proportion of liquid to solid to avoid crumbly results (I’ve read the comments below, and it seems like a lot of you are struggling with this factor!) Most recipes I’ve found online remedy this by using a lot of eggs, but I used applesauce and flax seeds instead with good results. Once you get the correct ratio down it’s pretty easy to work with, but I’ve learned the hard way that it’s best to use tried and true recipes with this finicky ingredient! The Colossal Healthy Candy Bar Makes 16 bars Coconut flour cookie bottom 1 ½ cups / 175g coconut flour ¼ tsp. fine sea salt ½ cup / 125ml unsweetened applesauce 2 Tbsp. ground flax seeds 1/3 cup / 85ml coconut oil, melted 2-3 Tbsp. maple syrup, as needed Date and nut caramel 1 ¼ cup / 325g pitted soft dates 1/3 cup / 80 ml nut butter (I used hazelnut) seeds of 1 vanilla bean ½ tsp. sea salt Roasted nuts ¾ cup /115g raw hazelnuts or almonds Raw chocolate coating 8.8 oz. / 250g cacao butter (not coconut butter or coconut oil) 1 ½ cup / 150g raw cacao powder ¼ cup / 60ml maple syrup pinch of sea salt Note: raw chocolate can be substituted with two 3½ oz. / 100g bars of dark chocolate (minimum 70% cacao). Directions: 1. Start by making the cookie bottom. In a small bowl stir the applesauce and the ground flax together. Set aside and let gel for 15 minutes. Preheat the oven to 350°F / 175°C. In a large bowl sift together the coconut flour and sea salt. Stir in the melted coconut oil, two tablespoons of maple syrup, the applesauce-flax mixture and blend until the mixture holds together when pressed. If not, add the remaining tablespoon of maple syrup and stir to combine. 2. Line a brownie pan with baking paper and firmly press the mixture into the pan, especially around the edges. Place in the oven and bake for 12-15 minutes until the edges are beginning to turn golden. Remove from the oven and set aside to cool at room temperature. 3. Lower the oven temperature to 300°F/150°C. Spread the nuts out in a single layer on baking sheet and roast for 20-30 minutes until fragrant and slightly darker in color (a good way to check is to cut one in half and check the color in the center. Instead of cream, it should be golden). Remove from oven and let cool completely. If you are using hazelnuts, rub them together to remove as much of their skins as possible. Roughly chop and set aside. 4. Make the nut caramel. Add the pitted dates to a food processor and blend until creamy. Add the nut butter, vanilla bean, and sea salt. Taste and adjust according to your tastes. 5. Spread the nut caramel in an even layer over the cooled cookie bottom. Cover the caramel with the chopped toasted nuts, and press them down so that they are slightly sunken, reserving a few for garnish. Place the pan in the freezer to firm up for at least 4 hours (frozen bars are easier to cut and coat with chocolate). 6. Prepare the chocolate. Melt the cacao butter in a double boiler over barely simmering water. Remove from heat, stir in the maple syrup and salt, then sift in the cacao powder. Whisk together until smooth. 7. Remove the brownie pan from the freezer and pull up the edges of the baking paper to remove the filling. Place on a cutting board and slice into 16 equal bars. 8. Roll each bar in the melted chocolate, then pick up using a fork, allowing most of the excess chocolate to drip off. Set on a wrack and let harden. Take remaining chocolate and drizzle across the width of the bar to create a design (this step is optional, but it makes the bars look really beautiful). While the chocolate is still wet, sprinkle with remaining hazelnuts and let set. Place all bars in the freezer to firm up. Store in an airtight container in the freezer, and remove 10-15 minutes before serving. (Note: these are okay outside of the freezer, but if you’re using raw chocolate they will be relatively soft if left at room temperature).

FOOD that helps you lose weight!
Tumblr media
10 Foods That Can Help You Lose Weight
When it comes to eating for weight loss, you’ve probably heard every piece of advice out there: Drink three glasses of grapefruit juice a day, eat egg whites for breakfast, or replace all your greens with kale.
It’s a convenient strategy to latch onto one specific food in the hope that it will completely transform your body, but unfortunately, that’s not the case.
Krista Haynes, R.D. and Beachbody nutrition manager, says weight loss doesn’t come down to one particular food. Losing weight “is a super-complex process that involves diet, sleep, stress reduction, physical activity, and genetics,” Haynes says.
That being said, there are certain foods that are healthier and more nutrient-rich than others; foods that pack tons of protein into a small number of calories, for example, or foods that can help increase your satiety and provide intense flavor without any added sugars or trans fats.
Keep in mind that the rest of your habits matter, too: “Eating these foods won’t do any good if you’re eating fast food, sitting on the couch all weekend, or feeling overly stressed about work stuff,” says Haynes.
But when you combine healthy foods with a balanced diet, regular exercise, hydration, and adequate sleep, your weight-loss goals will start to look more realistic. Here are 10 foods that will help you get to those goals.
10 Healthy Weight Loss-Friendly Foods
1. Eggs “Eggs are an excellent protein source in a small calorie package,” says Haynes. One large egg contains between 70 and 90 calories, depending on how it’s cooked (hard-boiled eggs are on the lower end of the spectrum, while fried eggs are at the higher end) and has roughly six grams of protein, six grams of fat, and one gram of carbohydrates. Eggs are also full of important nutrients like calcium, folate, and vitamins A and D.
Haynes says the protein in eggs can help you feel full and quell the urge to snack throughout the day, which could help with weight loss. In a study published in the International Journal of Obesity, two groups of overweight and obese individuals started a reduced-calorie weight-loss diet: One group ate eggs as part of their breakfast and the other ate bagels. The group that ate an egg breakfast experienced 65 percent greater weight loss than the group that ate a bagel breakfast.
Pro tip: Easy ways to add eggs into your diet — scramble a couple for breakfast with chopped veggies, slide a fried egg on top of your avocado toast, or nosh on hard-boiled eggs as an afternoon snack.
2. Almonds Almonds hit the nutrition trifecta: They’re full of fiber, protein, and healthy fat, making them a great balanced snack choice, says Haynes.
The only catch? “Calories add up quickly when munching on almonds,” Haynes says, so you have to be smart about your portions. The USDA’s recommended serving size of almonds is one ounce, or 23 whole nuts, which have 164 calories, 14 grams of fat, five grams of carbs, and about three grams of dietary fiber.
Pro tip: To get the fiber and protein without overdoing it, Haynes suggests eating raw, unsalted almonds instead of a carb-heavy muffin or sugary breakfast bar. She also recommends sprinkling slivered almonds on your oatmeal or grinding them into almond butter to spread on apple slices or celery sticks.
Foods to help you lose weight, avocado, weight loss
3. Avocados Avocados are everyone’s favorite source of healthy fat, but they’re also calorically dense, says Haynes. According to the USDA, the recommended serving size is about 30 grams, or one-fourth of a medium-size avocado — in other words, way less than what most people eat. One-fourth of an avocado contains 50 calories, less than one gram of protein, about five grams of fat, three grams of carbs, and two grams of dietary fiber.
But the fiber in avocados, combined with their rich, buttery taste, means you may not need to eat as much to feel satisfied, says Haynes.
The monounsaturated (or healthy) fat in avocados is also a key macronutrient and may help with weight loss. A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association showed that eating a diet with a high percentage of fat (60 percent) may increase your resting energy expenditure.
In addition, the Journal of the American Heart Association published a study that found that eating one avocado per day as part of a moderate-fat, cholesterol-lowering diet can help lower LDL cholesterol levels.
“This, of course, doesn’t give you free reign to eat all the fat you want — portions still matter,” says Haynes. She recommends spreading avocado on your sandwich instead of mayonnaise or adding a few slices to salads, eggs, or healthy tacos. You can also blend avocado in smoothies or eat a few spoonfuls peppered with chili flakes or sea salt as a savory snack.
Pro tip: Just remember that avocado should be an addition to your meal, not the main dish. “Watch out for the chips and guacamole, as that can be a calorie bomb,” says Haynes.
4. Cabbage This cruciferous veggie is low-calorie and loaded with nutrients like calcium, potassium, and vitamin A. One cup of raw shredded cabbage contains 18 calories, roughly four grams of carbs, two grams of fiber, and less than one gram of fat and protein each.
The appeal of cabbage as part of a weight-loss nutrition plan is that you can eat a lot of it without racking up calories. Haynes recommends incorporating fermented cabbage (sauerkraut or kimchi) into your diet to promote gut health. You can eat it on its own or toss it in a veggie bowl with your favorite protein and quinoa.
If you’re not a fan of kimchi, try mixing raw cabbage in your salads, making ground turkey tacos with cabbage wraps, or adding cabbage to a hearty soup.
5. Grapefruit Despite being praised online as a quick weight-loss solution, grapefruit doesn’t actually have a special fat-burning ability, says Haynes. Rather, it’s the high water and fiber content that can help you feel full and consume less food, she adds.
A study published in the Journal of Medicinal Food confirms this. The results showed that eating grapefruit led to modest weight loss: People who ate half a grapefruit three times a day before each meal lost about two pounds more than those who didn’t.
“Alone, grapefruit is low in calories,” says Haynes. According to the USDA, half a grapefruit contains 52 calories, 13 grams of carbs, two grams of fiber, and less than one gram of fat and protein each. The fruit is also a great source of calcium and vitamin C.
To get all the nutrients of grapefruit without the added sugar and calories, stick with fresh grapefruit rather than grapefruit juice. Eat it as a snack topped with cottage cheese, or pair it with a veggie omelet for breakfast.
Pro tip: One word of caution — it’s advised against eating grapefruit if you’re taking certain prescription medications, Haynes says, so check with your doctor before adding to your diet.
6. Oatmeal Oatmeal is a fantastic source of complex carbs, dietary fiber, and protein, all of which can help you feel full for several hours, says Haynes. One cup of cooked oats has 159 calories, and it contains about six grams of protein, 27 grams of carbs, four grams of fiber, and three grams of fat.
“Oatmeal is a great canvas to add other nutrients to,” Haynes says. She likes berries, banana slices, walnuts, chia seeds, or a drizzle of almond or coconut butter. Just be careful not to overdo it — dried fruit, sweetened coconut flakes, and big gobs of nut butter can contain tons of added sugar and extra calories.
Another healthy option for oatmeal? “Use rolled oats as an ingredient in protein snack balls,” says Haynes.
7. Salmon In addition to being a great source of lean protein, which Haynes says helps you maintain your muscle mass when trying to lose weight, salmon is also packed with healthy omega-3 fatty acids, which your body can’t produce. One three-ounce fillet of salmon has 155 calories, 22 grams of protein, seven grams of fat, and zero carbs.
“Salmon is a great option as a dinner alongside some veggies and a whole grain or starch like quinoa or sweet potato,” Haynes says. She also suggests salmon jerky as a protein-rich snack or smoked salmon on a sprouted whole-grain English muffin for breakfast (nix the cream cheese).
8. Yogurt Not all yogurts are created equal when it comes to weight loss. Most flavored yogurts and store-bought brands are packed with added sugar, Haynes says.
Plain, unsweetened, 2% Greek yogurt, on the other hand, is low in sugar and high in protein. Haynes recommends it as a healthy snack option or cooking substitute for heavy ingredients like sour cream and cream cheese.
Yogurt also contains probiotics, “which may help with weight loss by improving the ratio of good to bad bacteria in the gut,” Haynes says.
The USDA’s recommended serving size of Greek yogurt is one cup, which has 100 calories, six grams of carbs, less than one gram of fat, about six grams of sugar, and a whopping 17 grams of protein. It’s also loaded with calcium and potassium.
Top a cup of unsweetened Greek yogurt with berries and ground flax seeds for an easy breakfast, or blend it in your green smoothie for some extra protein.
9. Spinach Spinach, like cabbage, is low in calories and high in fiber and water content, meaning you can eat a lot of it without making a dent in your total calories for the day, says Haynes.
For example, one cup of raw spinach contains just seven calories, almost one gram each of protein and fiber, and one gram of carbs.
There’s also some research to suggest that thylakoids, the internal membrane system in green plants like spinach, can help facilitate the release of satiety hormones in the body. A study published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition, for example, found that taking a thylakoid-rich spinach extract before breakfast may help reduce hunger and snack cravings and increase satiety for over two hours.
To incorporate more spinach in your diet, Haynes suggests blending a couple of handfuls into your smoothie, tossing it in your veggie scramble or strata, adding it to soup, or swapping it for romaine lettuce in your salad.
10. Apples There may be some truth to the old adage that an apple a day keeps the doctor away. One study published in the journal Appetite found that eating an apple at the start of a meal may help with weight management. People who ate one medium-size apple before a meal reduced their food energy intake by 15 percent and reported feeling fuller.
That’s because apples are filled with fiber and water that can help increase satiety, says Haynes. One small apple has 20 grams of carbs, about four grams of fiber, 15 grams of sugar, and less than one gram each of protein and fat — all for 77 calories.
Munch on an apple plain, sprinkle it with cinnamon for extra sweetness, or add apple slices to your salad for some crunch.
Love you guys!

Should You Boost Your EPF Savings With Unit Trust Investments?
This article is sponsored by Securities Commission Malaysia, under its InvestSmart initiative Effective 1 January 2017, the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) has revised the quantum for basic savings  from RM196,800 to RM228,000. The amount will be set as the minimum target for EPF savings when members turn 55 years old. EPF revised the amount in light of the rising cost of living, longer life expectancy and a higher inflation rate. The new quantum is benchmarked against the minimum pension for public sector staff, which has been raised from RM820 to RM950 per month for 20 years upon reaching the age of 55. However the new quantum only refers to the basic savings considered sufficient to support a member’s basic retirement needs.
Is the new quantum enough to sustain you through retirement?
EPF provides wider pension coverage than countries such as Indonesia and India; in terms of pension contribution rates, Malaysia is the world’s fifth highest. Despite this, Malaysians are still likely to exhaust their entire EPF savings five years after the first withdrawal. [block type="warning"] Alarmingly, those with RM50,000 saved in EPF will likely exhaust the entire amount in five years! One contributing factor is the low salary structure in the country, where 89% of the working population earn less than RM5,000. Also affecting individual EPF contributions is the option to reduce the statutory contribution rate from 11% to 8%. This option is available from March 2016 to December 2017 only.  [/block] On paper, the new quantum of RM950 per month looks sufficient. But this is only true if every single sen is spent on basic needs. The harsh reality is that Malaysians spend 31.2% of their disposable income on food and food away from home, 23.9% on petrol, housing and utilities, and 14.6% on transport. Life after retirement is expensive! After taking all these lifestyle factors into consideration, RM950 might actually not be enough! What can you do about it?
Enter, EPF-approved unit trusts
One way to boost your chances of retirement survival is to grow your EPF contributions at a quicker rate. Did you know that EPF contributors can invest a portion of their savings into unit trust funds? The scheme provides members with an option to enhance their retirement savings by placing a portion of their EPF savings in Account 1 to be invested in unit trusts or through private mandate managed by appointed Fund Managers Institutions (FMI) under the EPF Members Investment Scheme (EPF-MIS). However, contributors will need to have higher savings in their EPF accounts to participate in the EPF-MIS. These funds need to achieve a three-year simple average consistent return rating of 2.00, sourced from mutual and hedge fund analytics provider Lipper, which has a scale of 1 to 5.
To invest or not to invest – that is the question
In February 2016, EPF announced a 6.40% dividend rate for 2015, with a total payout of RM38.24 billion. It was 0.35 percentage points less than in 2014, which was at 6.75%. Whether the dividend was satisfactory depends on a few factors but in today’s volatile market, only a handful of funds can match the performance shown by EPF, given that it’s a capital guaranteed fund. Additionally, the guaranteed minimum rate of 2.5% makes EPF a secure long-term investment, especially for retirement savings. There are a few ways to calculate dividends but the pressing question is: should one just rely on EPF dividends or make a portion of the savings “work harder” through unit trust funds? Well, a simple comparison was done between the EPF dividend and top performing EPF-approved fund Kenanga Growth Fund.  It was found that Kenanga, based on the conservative historical annualised dividend rate of 8.00% still outperformed the historical dividend rates of EPF. [block type="warning"] Remember: investing in unit trust funds come with additional fees and charges. For example, the Kenanga Growth Fund charges a 2% initial fee (based on FundSupermart discounted rate) and an annual expense ratio of 1.59%. The goods and services tax (GST) is also charged on these amounts. These eat into your returns, so instead of a 13% return over 1 year, it would be lower. However, the bulk of the fees are charged in the first year – the returns start picking back up and making up for the costs easily over the next couple of years. [/block] Of course, leaving your money in your EPF account is certainly less risky, but you may risk not building enough of a nest egg to fund your golden years. Therefore, withdrawing a sum from your EPF savings to invest in a unit trust fund is indeed a good way to boost your retirement savings. [block title="How it works"]
Effective January 1, 2017, members are allowed to invest up to 30% of excess savings, compared to the previous 20% limit.
Use the basic savings guide to determine the amount permitted to be transferred for investment under the scheme.
Members must also be below 55 years old at date of application.
The minimum amount of investment under the unit trust mandate is RM1,000 while for the private mandate, it may require a larger sum of money.
Once members fulfil eligibility, they can choose their desired funds. Of the 336 funds listed under the scheme, 220 funds are qualified to be offered for period 2015/2016.
Members are not allowed to withdraw any amount from the money invested through the FMI.
EPF will release its control on the invested amount by the FMI when a member reaches age 55 or has made full withdrawal under leaving the country, incapacitation, pensionable employees and death withdrawals.
Claims or resale of the invested units will be managed by the member or next-of-kin directly with the FMI.
Sources: The Star and EPF. [/block] The rule of thumb for investing is to start as early as possible, and this also applies to EPF-approved unit trust funds. Unit trust investments are known for their long-term value; usually up to five years or longer. For EPF members, they have the added advantage of being able to familiarise themselves with the track record of appointed fund managers before making their decisions. Perhaps the first step you can take is to monitor your EPF contributions and growth. Obtaining the latest statement can be done online through i-Akaun at myEPF website. Alternatively, members can obtain their statement via EPF kiosks or visit any EPF branches.  So, are you going to boost your retirement funds by shifting some of your EPF money into approved unit trust funds? The answer starts with you!
