The good, the bad and the fandom -V9E3 - Rude, Red, and Royal - AMAZING - RETURN TO FORM

Greetings, this post is a part of my ongoing series of threads reviewing the episodes of Volume 9. The link to the second episodes review can be found HERE. This series was started so i could give me opinions, be they good or bad, about the new volume of RWBY and to cover some of the FNDM discourse that is inevitably going to happen over the episodes.

Keep in mind that all of these are opinions and not all of them are what one could consider to be "traditional" criticisms but rather personal preference. Also, for the most part i will not go into detail too much in these, just a general overview.

The Good

Red King - Yes, i know he calls himself a prince but quite frankly i do not care. As far as recreating fairy tale characters this seems like a relatively faithful recreation of the Queen of Hearts from Alice in Wonderland, the same ridiculous, over the top and quite insane character.

The VA work is quite great too, being able to switch from threatening, to insane, to childish is quite a feat. Is this character unique? No. But it does what it needs to do perfectly. And quite frankly i cant get mad at a reference here.

I complained about tonal shifts in the last 2 reviews. Well, in this case i cant, because in this case, it makes sense. Queen of Hearts/Red Prince are meant to be unreasonable, insane, childish. Them going from funny/pathetic to genuinely threatening on the drop of a hat is their point.

The Visuals - RWBY is pulling out all of the stops with the visuals this volume. It wasn't nowhere near as visible with the forest, sure, it was bright but nothing truly eye catching. The castle however? Now that had some AMAZING visuals, not only in terms of textures or how things look, but also camera work.

The instant motion with the Red Prince did not bother me at all, that's the kind of energy he kind of needs to have. The Chess board, going from the view of the castle and its inner chambers to seeing only the table, all of these are visually striking.

The Music - I do not want to shittalk Jeff, so please, do not take this as me doing so. I understand that his work schedule took a toll on him, but Casey and her band are showing their prowess by rising up to the challenge currently. While i could not exactly hear the words of the song it felt a lot more unique than many other RWBY songs despite having that similar charm. The Creepy music once Neo gets onto the island is also well made.

The Fight - FUCKING AMAZING! The fight choreography is not the same as Montys was, it lacks the qualities of a dance as it was in the past. And yet, i do not mind it at all. The fight scene was cool and a true return to form for the series i think. The solo choreography of the characters was fine, but the TRUE moment was when they teamed up with their abilities.

Something that we sadly rarely ever see in the series anymore, it reminds me of the old times of V1-V3 when team combos were usually quite visible with team RWBY. Its also quite funny how the Weiss nevermore summon and the kind of attack they do with Yang and Blake reminds me of THE Nevermore fight back in V1. A very simmilar trick, but almost reversed, and not as brutal.

The only minor nitpick i would have about the finisher would be that i think it needed more OOOMPH to it, like, do damage to the board itself, make a crater, really give that IMPACT. But that is a minor nitpick, the fight was fire.

Neo - I have to say, i do like how Neo is just full on out of fucks to give anymore. She is there to kill and noone is going to stop her. It reminds me of Cinder back in V4, the same kind of obsession that comes after seeing arrogance from these characters. Right now Neo is not flamboyant, she is murderous. And i LOVE it. Her semblance getting an upgrade is interesting too.

The Bad

Nothing, and im being serious here. I am not going to find problems where there are none. At best i could maybe make up some minor nitpicks here and there, maybe things will change with a couple of rewatches, but right now i am fresh from watching the episode and nothing serious sticks out to me.

The Episode is just... Its good...

The Fandom

The episode has received quite a wide positive acclaim in general. The only Fandom disagreements were mostly over the role of Weiss and how she is the comic relief, but that is something i have covered before. Mostly RWBY twitter seems to either not be arguing or just rehashing the same old things over and over again (Can you believe that Shanes letter was discussed, AGAIN?)

HOWEVER, there is a single fandom "fight" that has occured, and that is over Neo.

Neo - So, the main discussions have occured whether or not Neo is a sadist or takes enjoyment from the suffering of others and what should her fate be at the end of the volume. Should she stay in the fairy tale, die or come back to Remnant.

I am of the very simple opinion that Neo is a killer that enjoys what she is doing, it has often been shown with her since as far back as Volume 2. While one can definitely write fanfictions making that not the case, at the end of the day it is canon that Neo likes killing/hurting people.

Her fate however is a complex question. On one hand, we already are having an Emerald redemption, as such Neo getting the same treatment is not out of the question. And yet it feels like this volume is leading into a Neo/Ruby confrontation, both due to how done Neo is and how Ruby is also slowly becoming done with it all. Hell, i even have a theory that Ruby will eventually have a break-down after killing Neo.

Ending Word

I had little to say over this episode besides praising it. And that is for the reason, i think that Episode 3 is simply great. Its a LOT better than Episodes 1-2 and the story seems to be picking up the pace and a good rate. I genuinely am awaiting Episode 4.

Of course, these are all just my opinions, everyone else is welcome to agree/disagree or to add on to this in way they deem proper. All opinions are welcome within reason.

Bleach alone got three updated selfships @@ for anyone curious, this is the current anime ships: BLEACH - Uryu Ishida (dont talk to me he’s my first major husband and why Im obsessed with glasses men now) - Grimmjow Jaegerjaquez (ye im basic, I was and am obsessed like everyone else) - Ikkaku Madarame (now that ive overcome the bald barrier, i realize i actually always really liked him whoops) Mob Psycho 100 - Sakurai + Koyama (fairly minor ship, I’m just a sucker for glasses/delinquent triangles. and I just love Mob Psycho so fyucking much) Golden Kamuy - OGATA HYAKUNOSUKE YOU LIL PIECE OF SHIT CAT MAN I LOVE YOU Im losing my mind over this series again idk how many times ive reread and rewatched it but IM DOIN IT AGAIN (lets not even mention One Piece making a comeback with that really fuckin good movie or mention RWBY/Bungo Stray Dogs that I’ve watched in the last couple months. Or how I’ve been slowly getting back on FFXIV)

okay okay so now that i’m finished here are my Actual thoughts alskcjejenbrhdisk:

i wish! that more of the book! was focused on roman & neo together and their friendship!! like i get that the first half was important bc they needed to show Just How Alone they both were before each other. but i would’ve gladly traded some of the beginning stuff for just a little more time with the two of them together. like maybe condense some of that and give us a few more anecdotes from their time training together?? just to show the development from wary partners to ride-or-die a little more. but idk. because the first half of the book felt a little slow for me but as soon as i got to the back half i could NOT put it down!!!!!!!!

i owe this writer (& the rwby writers ofc) my heart and soul and also probably my spleen. first cfvy, now roman & neo???? taking characters i didn’t have any strong feelings about but giving them personality and history and love and making ME love them???? AND WRITING FRIENDS/FAMILY SO WELL???? bro. BRO. i’m losing my MIND

ALSO. very excited for neo’s role in v9 now. and will also probably cry.

like. it would’ve been so easy for them to make roman & neo romantic. especially since there’s only like a 4 year age gap. but they DIDNT they let those two BE EACH OTHERS FIRST PRIORITY AND CLOSEST FRIEND AS FRIENDS AND I AM SO ECSTATIC ABT IT HOLY SHIT

from what i remember this one is similar to 4 in that it gives us a bit of an emotional break

don’t get me wrong i know there’s some stuff but i think overall it’s a little less intense

- all the main characters being able to witness this and us seeing their reactions is such a good touch like god, the impact of this reality is so much heavier because we get to see the characters actually affected by it react to watching it unfold before them

turning this back on you but are there any totally new things you've really enjoyed this year?

okay as a screenwriting major i am cONSTANTLY driven to consume new content so let me try and think what i’ve really enjoyed this year. i’ll probably forget a lot of stuff

well obviously you already know i’ve gotten into spop! after ages of just avoiding it because i didn’t want to deal with the seemingly voltron-esque fandom. and i’m glad i eventually got around to it because i ended up really really enjoying the characters and the worldbuilding and it’s honestly so COOL to see a kids fantasy show done by an lgbt creator and just… how that influences so many small things i might’ve taken for granted

i also recently watched the boys on amazon prime. it’s kind of like this gritty… superhero deconstruction, i guess?? in a period of time where i kind of feel that superheroes… need to be deconstructed. anyway it is EXTREMELY edgy but, again, i really liked the worldbuilding and what it was trying to do and it pretty much gripped me from start to finish

oh aaaand over the course of the summer i did finally get around to checking out the killing eve novels!  which was a really fun experience just, comparing and contrasting them to the show. they don’t have like… the show’s effortless charm and humor but they are REALLY fun spy thrillers with a very interesting, different interpretation of eve and villanelle as characters. the author wrote them eventually running away together and apparently frequently posts on twitter about how they’d probably own cats instead of having children. and he gave eve two pet pygmy goats, thelma and louise (collectively known as “the girls”). so really luke jennings is my kind of guy. 

oh speaking of, i also checked out fleabag, which is phoebe waller-bridge’s other most beloved show. it was… god, i feel like i cannot do fleabag justice by pitching it in only a few lines, but i feel like it’s something everyone should watch. it’s just… so funny and unapologetic in that way pwb is so good at, but also incredibly poignant and bittersweet and intelligent. like just. QUALITY quality television. fleabag is so good. and it’s a very short watch

i also (gasp) watched rwby this year! which i probably never would have done on my own (and no, @ everyone you’re still not allowed to rec me anime just because i liked it.) but i have some rp friends who are big into it and a couple of their portrayals just… really made me fall in love with the characters, so i decided i wanted to see them in canon! as you know im the kind of person who like, TOTALLY glazes over during extended fight scenes, and it has a lot of those, but i ended up being fond of it anyway just cause it has so much… heart and lots of COOL LADIES with focus on their relationships

movie wise i think my favorite thing that’s come out this year was midsommar, which is by the same guy who did hereditary. it’s sort of this… folk horror/fairy tale/break up movie/revenge fantasy combo and i don’t really know how to rec it because ari aster’s movies are SO intense on so many different levels, but is a GORGEOUS, visceral film that i really connected with and also just drooled over a lot from a filmmaker’s perspective,

then my favorite new thing to come out of hbo this year was chernobyl, which… hoh boy, chernobyl. what can i even say. it’s such a well made, respectful, NECESSARY retelling of a very important event in human history that’s still… very relevant in so many ways today. it’s just harrowing to watch at times but it’s also one of those things where i’m like, in awe of how good it is, and i LOVE just… idk, learning about history, so i was big into it

brief shoutout to slasher solstice which i just remembered existed. i guess i’ll count it as a new thing because slasher is like, an anthology series, so totally new story. it was some dumb campy bullshit but i had so much fun watching it

oh my god. and that reminds me i have to include. DEMONS.  sorry for putting that in all caps and bold, i realize that looks kind of threatening. i was just gonna mention “yeah josh and i have been watching some more dario argento movies lately” but no i need to mention demons specifically, which is like, one of the funniest, campiest, gory horror franchises from the 80′s i have ever fucking seen in my life. these movies are so. SO weird. and silly. but i’ve been like fucking obsessed with them ever since we sat down and watched the first one

oh to include a podcast, i’ve been listening to this podcast will kill you on and off! it’s done by two med students and each episode is about a different infectious disease and i know that SOUNDS weird but listen i am learning SO much. did you know that wwii was in part indirectly caused by the spanish influenza pandemic? did you know that werewolf and vampire lore was largely drawn from people’s fear of rabies? did you know that the smallpox vaccine was the first one ever created and before that, people didn’t think vaccinations worked? NOW YOU DO. it’s kind of morbid but i’m like, SO interested in the history of disease and how it affected human society and it goes into a lot of that kind of stuff

Logan/ RWBY Headcanons

Because I’m obsessed with both Logan/ The Wolverine, and RWBY I came up with some head canons for Team RWBY and Logan. I asked @headcanonsfromremnant to do something for this, and they did it great. Here’s a link for theirs as well. https://maximalcatpossible.tumblr.com/post/159003285659/because-i-watched-logan-last-night-and-im-hella Right off the bat, I can see Ruby and Logan being a Wolverine and Jubilee duo. I can also see Logan accidentally calling her Jubilee by accident. If Ruby recognized him from comic books or the news she’d be both excited and maybe even a little disappointed. Logan very well would tell her that the real world isn’t like the comics or the fairy tales. If she pestered him about what was true or not from the comics, he’d tell her some things were real, but not everything was real, and not all the endings were good. Speaking of fairy tales, I can still see Ruby as a “Red Riding Hood” character, her being red riding hood of course, the enemies being the wolves, and Logan being the huntsman. And for enemies, I totally would’ve wanted to see Logan wreck Tyrian. If Ruby got too hurt, Logan would’ve done his famous Berserker Rage and just annihilate Tyrian. If she was captured by Tyrian, Cinder, or even Salem, Logan would no doubt go after her, even with all odds against him. Of course Logan would take some major hits and I can see Ruby getting concerned for him, despite Logan most likely not taking her help or concern. If Ruby managed to save his skin or downright save his life, I think Logan would give her his shy thanks. “I don’t know how you got me out of there, but, thank you.” In spite of how gruff he is, and how different their personalities are, I can actually see Ruby finding that softer spot in his heart. Wether he admits it or not is anyone’s question, but either way he’d deny it. Finally, if Logan WAS to die, Ruby would hold his hand without a doubt. This is maybe where Logan would give her a good thank you, goodbye, or to keep moving forward. For Weiss, I can already see them butting heads about the littlest things. I can also see Weiss judging him for things like his personal hygiene (referring to his scruffiness), his cigar and alcohol habits, and of course his temper. I also have this scenario in my head where their car or truck breaks down and Logan needing to fix it. It doesn’t go so well and Logan cusses, yells, throws stuff, or maybe even bashes the car in a little. All Weiss can do is sit there and watch, a little worried if not a little scared. Seeing this Logan calms down and takes a breather before apologizing to Weiss. I can also imagine Weiss’s biggest issue would be her father’s men chasing her. Of course Logan isn’t just gonna sit back and let this happen, and of course neither is Weiss. Seeing her actually fight would no doubt surprise him. Seeing her with a sword and not a gun is also another surprise. I can imagine Logan disliking guns, as he’s usually the one being shot at. Since Winter is Weiss’s final and only true family left, if they DID find her, I don’t see Logan sticking around for too long. He’s more of a, “I agreed to this, we’re done now”, kinda guy. I also have another scenario in my head where Winter and Weiss are talking and Logan is sitting off further away. Logan probably sees this and remembers his alpha flight or x men days when he was surrounded by people who loved and cared about him. He’s glad to see them together, maybe even wants to join in, but he doesn’t. He just sits there and watches them talk, smile, and be themselves. To me, Blake is the character that most resembles Logan, in my eyes at least. Mostly because Blake was made into a pawn of the White Fang, and Logan was made into a weapon for the Weapon X program. I can also still see Blake’s beauty and the beast theme with her and Logan. I don’t see it as romantically, but more of the girl with a kind heart and a monster who still HAS a heart. Maybe Adam being the Gaston of the theme as well. And like I said for Tryian, I would wanna see Logan wreck Adam too. I think he would be a tougher opponent than Tyrian, because even though Tyrian does have poison, Logan’s healing factor can likely take care of this. Adam on the other hand has that one slash semblance thing he used on Yang. I don’t know if this can kill Logan or not, but there’s a good chance it could cut through adamantium. And with Adam’s Japanese style of fighting, I can see some resemblances of honor and will to fight like the japanese comics of the wolverine. Maybe Adam or other White Fang members could bring some light about the Kuzuri myth. But back to Blake, more specifically the faunus side of her, I have another scenario in my mind. I can see Blake being discriminated for her faunus traits, and Logan standing up for her. Maybe him roughing someone up or just using that scary scowl and deep yell of his. What I mostly see is him telling her what he told Rogue on the train in the first X-Men movie, how he knows how she feels, and how people are going to judge her for being different. I also see Logan being a guest in Blake’s home and meeting her parents. I don’t see Ghira being so picky with him like Sun, as he doesn’t see Logan as a boy pursuing his daughter, more of another parent picking up their daughter and bringing her home. Maybe even Ghira or Kali recognize him from their youth and before Logan lost his memories. Even though he may be a guest over for dinner, if there’s one thing I know about Logan and Wolverine stories, being a guest in a family’s home doesn’t end well for him. Whatever happens, I have two ideas of what comes after. He dies and that’s where he tells Blake the “Don’t be what they made you”, line, or he leaves because he doesn’t want to put Blake and her family in anymore danger. Maybe leaving with something along the lines of Shane, “There aren’t anymore wolves in the valley.” And the beast protecting Bell from the wolves could still be a beauty and the beast thing. And then there’s Yang. For her, I can see her getting irritating for Logan kinda like the way Deadpool would. Being a part of Ruby’s family I can guess that she’d recognize him from the comic books too. Maybe she’d say how she liked his yellow spandex suit because it matched her colors or something. But like Ruby I can also see Yang getting a little disappointed about actually meeting him. I can also see him giving her the “I am NOT, whatever it is you think I am” speech. Another big thing I can see Yang and Logan getting involved in is Raven and her clan. Logan vs. Raven could be a good fight, but since I don’t know much about Raven I don’t know who would be victorious. I can also see Raven and her clan recognizing Wolverine as the Kuzuri or the Kuakuoku, the Japanese story of the animal with claws or the Native American story of the wolverine. Maybe there was even a time where Raven met or fought with Logan before he lost his memory. Bringing it back to Yang, I can also see them sharing an interest in motorcycles. I can also imagine when Logan was driving with X-23 with her sunglasses on and her arm hanging outside of the window, that Yang would do something similar. Yang is a showy character, and an epic back to back tag team fight would make one awesome scene. Fist and claws working together would be bad ass. On a more subtle side, they both have some major PTSD on their ends. I can also imagine Yang replacing Laura in that nightmare scene from Logan, “I have nightmares too, people hurt me”, “Mine are different, I hurt people.” So that’s my headcanons off Logan/ Wolverine and team RWBY.
