Sun and Moon x Reader Chapter Eleven
!!WARNING!!
***THIS CHAPTER MENTIONS GORE AND ABUSE!! IF YOU ARE SENSITIVE TO THAT KIND OF CONTENT, WE ADVISE YOU TO SKIP IT!!***
Sun P.O.V.
I look over to my brothers.
"I don't trust this situation one bit." I say as I try to discreetly get confirmation from them. Moon looks at me and says;
"I bet they're fine but if you want to follow them we aren't going to stop you." I nod as I quickly leave the daycare and start following Y/n. I was traveling on the ceiling so no one would catch me outside of my mandated place during plex hours. I follow them until I see them at the entrance. I listened closely to what they were all saying.
"Here you go Sir, the one you asked for." Dave says proudly.
"Hey, maybe after you get done talking to them maybe you should visit the number one crate over there, Sir. I hear they are pretty exciting." The dude just stares at him and tells him to leave. I watched Y/n back away from the person but they were quickly shoved back to where they were. I thought to myself.
'Why are they acting like that? I haven't ever seen them that way.' I watch the employee walk away and I immediately see Y/n bolt towards one of the staff areas and they make it in but the man that was chasing them follows close behind. I go through the entrance of the area they have entered and see that they have been caught by the person. I can see blood coming out of Y/n's mouth. I then watch as the man pulls another punch at them to the ribs. I watch them fall to the ground. The next thing I know is I'm in front of the man. He comments on my outfit.
"What the fuck kind of outfit is that? hahahaha, a fucking clown?" I see the man lunge at me and throw a punch. The man stops after he hits me and winces in pain.
"Yeah, weren't expecting me to be made of metal, were you bitch?" I say with confidence.
"And just so you know, I'm not a clown, I'm a jester." I say lifting up the dude with one hand punching him dead in the face.
"You're just a glorified clown." I slap the man.
"I am paid to be a clown, unlike you." I say to the man. I hear a pained groan.
"Sunny, please stop..... he might break you.... I can't watch you be destroyed in front of me." Y/n began to weep softly to themselves.
"Sunflower, don't worry. I'm completely fine, let me take care of this." I say to them with a smile.
"I'm going to leave for a few minutes Y/n. I don't want you to see what I am going to do, alright? Would you like me to have Dusk come get you so you don't have to be alone here?" I ask, with concern for them. I hear them faintly reply;
"Mhm." I then called Dusk to get them. After about a minute I see Dusk take them back. I stare back at the man that I've been hanging onto this whole time and feel my smile drop completely and has been replaced with pure rage.
"How do you even know my sunflower? What relation do you have with them?" The man speaks up.
"That's none of your business and what is all of this "my" crap you're spewing at me?" I stare at them silently then reply.
"Why should I answer any of your questions if you haven't answered mine?'' I say, tilting my head with an unentertained expression.
"I'll make this simple for your itty bitty brain. If I ask a question, you answer it and if you ask I'll answer. Now doesn't that sound fun?" I say frankly.
"Let's begin with your name and your relation with Y/n." The dude looks at me terrified at that moment.
"Bryan, and I'm that little whore's father." I stare at him with a menacing look.
"You better be careful how you word things sir or else." I say in a serious tone.
"Okay your turn!" I say enthusiastically.
"Why hasn't Y/n been coming home?" he asks, shivering from fear.
"You call the place you reside home? Oh no no no, that's a little shit hole made for people who should rot in hell for all eternity." I say smiling at him.
"But that didn't answer your question. Maybe the reason why they haven't come 'home' is because you are the worst person to have ever walked the earth and maybe they just wanted to get away from the toxic environment." I responded.
"Now, why are you here today?" I ask curiously.
"The little shi- Y/n, hasn't been home in a while and they have rent to pay and a house to clean." I tied his hands behind his back while he was saying this with some razor wire I found laying around. The dude starts to scream by now but I find a dusty old raggedy piece of cloth and decide to wad it up and put it in his mouth, tying it in place with some ribbon I had in my pocket.
"Oh sir, it seems your time is up." I say as I grab him by the wrist gripping them enough for the wire to get stuck in his skin. I lifted him by the wire and hung him by some pipe that was hanging down. I take off the covering of my hand to expose the hand's endoskeleton. After doing that I had a small blade pop out. I look around to try and find where I should start to cut him. I then spotted where I was going to start, I leaned in close and whispered in his ear.
"How many times did you hurt them?" As soon as I finished that sentence I bit his ear off. While I was biting his ear I started to carve a star onto his chest. The man started to squirm and scream like his life depended on it. I whisper into his other ear.
"No one is going to save you this time, you are my little toy to play with till I am satisfied." I started to constrict around the man's body as I started to make shapes in the man's forehead. After carving the shapes into his skin, I start to take the skin off inside the shape as if I were coloring them in.
"Hmmm. Guess what? I am starting to get bored of you." I say making a frowny face.
"I guess it's time to do what parents do with their kids' old toys." I look around at my surroundings to see if I could find something perfect enough to get rid of him. I spot what I was looking for and grab it. As soon as I grab it I start to bash his head in with a pipe until it makes his skull cave in from the amount of blunt force I had to use. After I was done, I looked at myself and saw that I was covered in the man's blood.
"Well darn, guess I have to change my clothes after I'm done disposing of this mess."
I wrap the body in plastic and bring it to the trash compactor and turn it on. I leave the area and head back to the daycare. I go back to my room and check to see how Y/n is doing.
"How are they doing?" I ask, taking off my blood stained shirt and disposing of it.
"They need moon drops, could you get Moon for me?" I look down at Y/n and then look back up at Dusk.
"What do they need moondrops for?" Dusk puts his hand on my shoulder and leads me to Y/n.
"Sunny, don't freak out with what I am about to show you, it's pretty disturbing." I nod slowly, preparing myself for what I am about to see. I watch Dusk lift up their shirt and see an agonizing sight before me. I put my hand over my mouth and stumbled backwards.
"Do you get why we need Moon now?" I nod and make my way out. I head out of the room and start looking for Moon.

a case of the biggest cards (a tua holiday fic)
Cards, muffins on the way, and a slightly tired (tipsy) family that have competitive and snarky written in their bones and running in their veins. A sure fire way for total absolute mayhem on earth. Oh this is gonna be fun. Klaus can't wait."
Or: The Hargreeves make the best of their royal fucking up of the timeline and spend Christmas Eve together at last.
heyyyyyyy @a-fucking-velociraptor it’s me your secret santa for @secret-santa-klaus!! wanted to do a little sibling bonding fic for you and then I went overboard LMAOOO I hope you like it anyways and happy holidays!!! I hope you’re having the best times this season!!
it’s also on ao3 to read for your reading pleasure!! (if you have an ao3 acc by all means lemme know so I can gift it to you on there!)
Fine hands move quickly to practiced motions. Long, nimble fingers sent cards flying as they shuffled around in the deck.
The five of them were all sitting on the floor, wrapped around a worn coffee table and leaning against the sofa and armchairs around them. Assorted pillows strewn about to comfort them, they were slowly going through the 3 bottles of whatever shitty drink they had trusted Diego with getting for the night. One of them was already empty.
Since the whole Dooms-didn’t/Apoca-nope-lypse/The Sparrow Academy timeline fuckery to the highest of degrees, they were all pretty much left in the dust. After a not so great first encounter with the “Sparrows” (none of them had even begun to comprehend the big emo looking elephant in the room, let alone address it to each other) they were promptly kicked our of the Hargreeves mansion. It took a while after that, but eventually they found a flat somewhere in the city for cheap to hide out in. The place wasn’t really cozy, totally not big enough for all of them together, but it was a roof over their heads to keep them safe enough till they could figure how to bring back their own timeline and finally have this behind them once and for all.
If that even existed anymore.
Klaus leered tiredly at the movements. Had it been himself dealing with the deck, he’s sure it would not be nearly as graceful, instead the cards would probably move clumsily with his fidgety hands and scrawny fingers, spewing all over the place. Then again, it might just be the signature “Rumor Charm.” Alli made everything look elegant, it was one of her best skills, one she gained with no powers, no rumors, that she did without even trying. It was just her.
“Allison. Darling sister of mine. While this in no means to rush you at all, I just want you to know that I’ve murdered entire Commision boards in shorter amounts of time that you’re taking right now.”
That, the source of the uncannily on cue quip, was Five. The grouch wasn’t letting up his smartass act up for one bit, even for the goddamn holidays. How predictable.
“First, you’ve only killed one commision board. Second, this is a Christmas Eve party, aka fun night party, aka we are not having discussions of our more colorful histories for one night party, please-”
“Can we actually start the game? I hear Santa hates it when he's’ trying to do his job and sneak like a ninja or whatever only to see six idiots in a small dingy, dark as shit living room bickering over cards and oh wait- they've been at this since when?”
All eyes focused on whom that voice belonged to, which was Diego. While he was working at defrosting himself of his bitter and snarky facade, it didn’t really help that he was both tired and annoyed as shit at the wait right now.
“Quite a bold accusation that Santa wants to see any of us after all the shit we’ve pulled Di.”
“Even if he did, does he even know how to find us now? You know, technically not existing anymore and all-”
“What did Allison just say guys-”
“Hey Vanny, we’re just-”
“Okay, I think it’s time we get this show on the road shall we?” Allison pointedly interrupted with, brandishing the now shuffled deck of cards to veer the group to their original intentions (She does that a lot nowadays).
“Thank goodness. At the rate that we’re going it’s only a matter of time before we become itty bitty old grannies sitting on porches in rocking chairs.” Vanya crooned, scrunching up her face at the end to emphasize her point.
“Five’s essentially a grandparent already Vanya-”
“Well, he’ll just become a jurassic fossil I gue-”
PWACK
“Five!”
“That-” he gestured to the pen in Vanya’s hand he has just whacked her in the face with (Klaus had admittedly, bursted out a sharp spark of laughter at the sight) “is what happens when you are the only one I tolerate slightly more than average and you use this weakness to lead me to a complete and utter betrayal.”
“Betrayal?”
“You know, we actually promised Luther we’d let him bake in peace this time.”
Indeed, as Allison had oh so clearly reminded them, while the others were engaging in whatever was going on right now, Luther was trying baking some red velvet muffins (“No, don’t look at me like that, this is a totally normal amount of food coloring to put in the batter. They have to be the brightest red guys! Come on, it’s Christmas!”) in the kitchen close by. He was in there a lot nowadays, essentially becoming their new Grace in terms of their meals. He claimed it was a cathartic process for him, and in return they all just enjoyed the free meals.
“Jokes on Luther if he’s dumb enough to actually belive that.”
The last comment earned an eruption of laughs all around the table, a scandalized “Vanny!” here and there. Such was expected from their Vanya, the now youngest of the group (and isn’t that wild? Their entire lives were dictated by nothing else but the fact they were quite the peculiar, unlucky septulets and time travel and fucking Dallas took even that away from them). A complete contrast from the Vanya that was so long ago, sarcasm and laughter were her now weapons of choice as she’d talk and tease non stop about anything with a grin. Honestly, good for her.
With cards now flying across the table, it was time for the real shit. The game was one that Klaus had actually taught them. It was one of the many “souvenirs” that he had brought back from Vietnam. He had learnt it, along with the rest of his squadron from one Private Darren Teow. “T” for short, although the boys called him “Croc” after an embarrassing incident where he was the main star of a disaster march across a riverbank (oh boy was that a wild day).
His parents had come to the United States back in the early 40’s for a chance of something new, and for their son, a chance of something better, a life of his own that could be so grand.
“And what a real great life this is, isn’t it?” He had said one night, a one in a kind night where the jungles were silent of the noises that shook them all for once and instead was filled with the laughter and cheering of the squadron as days old beer was being passed around like candy. Raising his can in the air, the bitter cynicism in his voice rang clear. “Trying to save my head from blowing up to bits everyday on the floor these fucking jungles. A goddamn blast if I’ve ever seen one. Three cheers for the Land of the Fucking Free-”
It wasn’t played as much as a usual game of poker, but whenever there was a fleeting moment here and there, or nobody had any cigs left to bet after Katz snatched them all (Rule Number 15 of the 173rd: Do not let that All-American face and charm fool you. That man will have your rations in his godly chiseled arms and the palms of his hands before you can even put down a card).
Sometimes, when he and Dave were cooped up in some motel room in Saigon during leave, trying to avoid another Sky Soldier who would try and drag them along for a night on the town, they’d decide to play it together, just the two of them. And by that it meant Dave would offer to play a round of poker, and Klaus would beg to play this instead for a “fun change of pace, you know?”
“You mean, when you don’t want to eat utter shit at the hands of your awfully gifted beloved and can’t face the fact that you can’t keep a straight face for shit?”
“Be thankful you have a god gifted jawline from Adonis himself, or else I would have busted out of this motel aeons ago.”
“What can I say if I learnt it from the best?”
“Fuck you Kitty Katz.”
“I love you too, starlight.”
“That’s it, you are disqualified for hitting me with that sappy shit. I love you too.”
He smiled, chuckling softly at the memory as his hands reached for the familiar chain of cold steel around his neck, the motion second nature at this point. God, Klaus missed that dork so much.
Teow had called the game Big Two. At the very core of it, spades’ the best, then hearts, then clubs, and last and very least: diamonds. The bigger the better. Except for two. That little fucker gets you far. Put down as many as you can at rapidfire speed. First one to finish their cards in hand is winner winner chicken dinner!
Cards, muffins on the way, and a slightly tired (tipsy) family that have competitive and snarky written in their bones and running in their veins. A sure fire way for total absolute mayhem on earth. Oh this is gonna be fun. Klaus can't wait.
He wishes Ben were here. God knows how much that little shit would be enjoying this right now.
The cards were swiftly dealt. He inspected his hand, as the others were talking about theirs. On top were the first two cards, two threes.
The game carried on as a normal one, duets of cards spilling on the table. And then, a lull as yet again his siblings had started another feud. This time, Diego was convinced Five was cheating somehow. Hell, knowing the little menace, he probably was.
Klaus must have dozed off somewhere, because it was only when a hand slammed into his shoulder that his head whipped back to the table, about to mutter a quick apology to what he expected were a circle of tired faces. Instead, he saw a cacophony of grim expressions. Something was going awry.
“What’s wrong? You look like you’ve seen a ghost.”
“Klaus-”
“You know, the last time I checked, I was the Seance around here-”
“Klaus-”
Klaus mocked a gasp, dramatically placing a hand on his chest as he feigned a look of shock on his face. “No! Don’t tell me you all are putting a Lila on me-”
“Five’s on his last card!” they all exclaimed, exasperated by Klaus’ usual antics.
Oh. Well, that's where the problem quickly emerged. Shit.
“Put something! Anything! Don’t let him win!” Allison shrieked.
“How can she? He’s got some damn strong cards there!” Diego added.
They had to be pulling his leg. Already? Things had just started getting good around here. Or you know, Klaus assumes it was before he was lost in wherever the fuck his mind went. But alas, a hesitant glance at the table and indeed, on the stack of cards, were two aces. Goddamn aces. Scouring through his hand, a sigh came over the medium. Those were some goddamn miracle cards.
Again, if only Benjamin was here. Sure, after their last poker fiasco, the little shit would probably decide to just screw him over again cause he had such a fun ride the last time around. But still, it was at least better than nothi-
Wait. Eyes perked up as Klaus saw a lifeline of a card in his hand.
Aces may have been big.
But they weren’t the biggest.
And with that a couple of two’s were places on the table, and Klaus, with a calm, low tone uttered-
“Last card.”
An array of sounds could be heard. Gasps, exasperated groans and sighs echoed across the table as cards were chucked in the middle in a show of surrender. Five glared daggers, as one would at the person who caused their defeat. It didn’t really matter to the medium anymore because-
“Victory is mine, bitches.”
A scoff, then an eyeroll before Five uttered “Beginner’s luck.”
“I’m the one who told you how to play you little shit.”
“Well, then it’s just a stroke of luck then. The game’s all chance anyways.”
“You goddamn pri-”
“Could it kill you all to be a bit quieter?” Luther asks, cutting the action as he finally stepped into the room.
“Lutherino!”
“Big guy finally decided to show up huh?”
“My apologies Razor Boy, didn’t want to give you guys burnt shit now, didn’t I?” he says, placing a pile of whatever he had made on the table, which was met with an applause all around. Oh damn they looked good.
“You guys only love me for cooking, don’t you?”
“Well, now that you’ve said it-”
“Five!” With a whack on his shoulder, Allison chided the former assassin while scooting a bit into Diego, patting the empty space she’d just created for Luther to plop into.
“Think you could come in with a cute little apron, you know, really sell into the chef role you’ve set for yourself here? One with an abundance of frills, preferably.”
“No, absolutely not Klaus. Now pass me the goddamn cards to shuffle before you guys start some shit again.”
“Wow, our Numero Uno now joins in on the gambling fun? Whatever happened to our ever so righteous bro bro?
“Klaus, I worked with Jack Ruby for a year. You don’t wanna know half the things I’ve witnessed.”
And that was it. That was their breaking point. It wasn’t long before the whole room erupted into laughter and wow this is so good.
It isn’t perfect. They all struggled to fit, it was way too chilly for comfort even under assorted layers of tight knit sweaters. Their hearts still panged for what they had already lost and what they were afraid they could still lose.
But, they were all together, and they haven’t been able to say that for so long. So, they could set all those worries and lingering annoyances aside for a bit to just be. Right here, right now, enjoying the warmth and joy of each other’s presence in a way they never thought they’d be so lucky to feel.
Later that night, Klaus resolves that if ever found Teow again, he’d have to thank him.

1 Chronicles 28:1-29:30, Romans 5:6-21, Psalms 15:1-5, Proverbs 19:18-19
Today is the 19th day of July welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I’m Brian it's great to be here with you as we…we reach out our hand and twist the knob and throw open the gates and walk into a brand-new week that's just been waiting for us to get here. And our choices will write the story of the week. This is the last full week of the 7th month of the year. Next week…we have most of the week in this month and we’ll end next week by switching over into a new month. But no matter what week or day it is it is a joy to come around this campfire together to enjoy knowing that we are not in this alone and to let God's word speak into our lives. So, this week we’ll read from the New English Translation, the NET Bible and continue our journey through first Chronicles as well as Paul's letter to the Romans. But first, first Chronicles 28 and 29 today.
Prayer:
Father, we thank You for bringing us into this brand-new week and we’re just looking at the last week of another month, the last full week of another month. And when we look at these days and times and where we are in the year it certainly locates us in the year and where we are but it's also this kind of constant reminder because we have this constant in our lives every day, every week, every month we have spent together in Your Word allowing it to speak into our days and weeks and months and it transforms us, it renews our minds, it challenges us, it rebukes us, it comforts us, it lifts us up, it tears down the things that need to come down and we’re grateful. And some of the things that we’ve gone through, yeah, they’ve been hard things, but You have been faithful to us. You are committed to our full and total restoration. And, so, we worship You today, we thank You for the gift of community, and the gift of the Scriptures and we invite Your Holy Spirit to lead us into all truth as we follow into this new week. And we pray these things in the mighty name of Jesus. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:
Hello, I’m calling for GG from Gainesville. Sweetheart, God knows the pain you’re going through right now, but yes, your daddy is with Him. But know that your heavenly Father loves you so much and He’ll be there for you sweetheart. He is a heavenly father who cares, and the word says that he is the Father of the fatherless. So, know you can turn to him for all your needs, your comfort, your comfort for your family, for your sister and your brother. O, you did just touch my heart to hear your pain. I know what it is to lose…to lose someone. I didn’t have a daddy, but I see that daddies mean so much to people, but I never knew my daddy. But sweetheart we do have a heavenly Father who loves us, and I pray that you turn to him for comfort and God bless you all. Bless the entire family and may God just take you through this and comfort you. God bless. Love you…love you DAB family. You’re just such a precious part of my life. This is Betty from upper New York State. God bless everyone. A man.
Hi this is Bighearted Ben, and this is Radiant Rachel from Pennsylvania…from Pennsylvania. We wanted to say that we love our new nicknames, thank you His Little Cherry. Thank you, Little Cherry. And we loved the song that you sang. We have a prayer for tonight. Okay go ahead. Dear God, thank you for this day. Thank you for all of the good things that you’ve given us. Thank you for our friends. Thank you for our family. Thank you for everyone in the whole wide world. Amen. Please help us all to continue to get good night’s sleep. Everyone in the whole world even the people that are being born and the people aren’t born, even the little itty-bitty babies, yeah, that still aren’t alive, and the ones that were just born, and the ones that are just kids, and the ones that the teenagers, yeah, and the ones that are grown-ups, yeah, and the ones that are elderly, yeah, and the one and grandpas and grandmas and great grandmas and great grandpa’s and we thank you and we praise you for answering our prayer for sleep before and we thank you that we got to hear everybody that called in and love the prayers. Amen. Amen.
This is Dave the encourager from Southern California. I just got or I just heard the second or third call in from John in South Sudan. We all heard it…it was just incredible. This man obviously lost his brother to some terrible violence. Seven men broke in and killed his brother over the fact that he was simply a Christian. And now they found the men and they are looking to arrest them. They found out that they were paid to kill this man for 12 American dollars which all meant nothing. But John had called in to pray for these men to save their soul and this is why we want of Jesus Christ. Is it not? This is the reason we love God the Father, because we have human beings here that are praying for the most wicked human beings that they would be saved because they would know the joy that we already know. So, no matter what troubles that we face in life I’m so grateful to hear the stories like John from South Sudan and how he’s gone through tremendous suffering yet he focuses his efforts on the Father God, Jesus Christ whose come to save us all. So, let us all pray together as the DAB family team and pray for this man as praying for all the wicked men that took this guy’s brothers life and all the people in our lives. Let’s pray for our enemies and let’s love one another. Thank you so much for calling in and telling us your story John.
Good morning everyone this is Alecia and I’m calling from the beautiful island of the St. Vincent and the Grenadines. This is my first-time calling in. I have been listening to Daily Audio Bible for the past 2…3 years if I’m correct and I must say Brian you have been an inspiration for me. I love you too. And Jill, everyone, thank you for your work. It has always been an encouragement and even as I sit here there are many times when the Holy Spirit has prompted me to call in and I keep thinking, “O, my problems is not there problems.” But today…I mean this week I am going through a prayer and fast because I know that in order to accomplish things sometimes we have to go in prayer and fasting and this week I am because I believe that my God is the God of possibilities and that nothing is impossible for him. So, even as I sit here, I am going to share with you DABbers that you will join me in prayer for my marriage and my husband. We have been trying for the past four years to have children and things are not looking good. The doctor’s results were not the best. And even though my husband is broken by this result I choose to believe that nothing is impossible, and that God can turn it around. He rules the dead, He causes the blind to see. So, He can move this infertility and I can declare, and I decree it in the name of Jesus. So, even as I sit here, even as I commit this week into God’s hands, I declare that by the ending of this fast which ends on the 19th that the impossible would be made possible in Jesus’ name. Amen.
Hello, DABbers it’s your girl Val in Vegas it’s the 15th just calling to check in. Things are going well. I just have to realize it takes time for your body to fully heal after, you know, the double pneumonia that I had. So, still not 100% but feeling good. Just a reminder that we have to just continue to focus on the Lord even in the midst of all the chaos and crazy. God loves us, He’s got our back and He is in full control everyone. I just love you guys so much and appreciate all the prayers and thoughts. I pray for you guys constantly. You are my favorite people. I love you DABbers let’s keep rolling.
Hey GG from Gainesville. O honey, my heart goes out to you on the recent loss of your daddy. I’m so sorry. But I hear in your voice that you’re relying on the Lord to carry you through this difficult time. Know, please know that I am praying for you and your family. You are such a beautiful child. I’m sending you a virtual hug right now. Just grandpa Bob from Michigan loves you and will be praying for you. God bless.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 – FUNNY AS IT IS EPIC AS IT IS DRAMATIC
**PRECAUTIONARY NOTE: Most of what is written here are my opinions. Don’t take them in a bad note. Everyone’s got opinions.**
Since 2008, Marvel Studios has been delivering us massive films based on their comic book works and so far they are doing a pretty good job. They’ve been earning tons of box office money—approximately $11 billion worldwide—and almost all of their entries are well-received by critics and fans, even those who don’t read the comics, like me (I’m too lazy to read but I sometimes acquire knowledge from those materials; sometimes I thank the YouTube series of Marvel called “TL;DR”, which stands for “too long; don’t read”, for acquired knowledge, and so far the episodes I watched were about Spider-Verse, Infinity Wars, and the Deadpool Kills series). Anyway…
The first entry of Marvel Studios of this year 2017, Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2, opened internationally late April and in the US May 5th. With a box office performance record of about $145 million domestically and about $430 million worldwide and an 82% “Fresh” Rotten Tomatoes rating, Guardians Vol. 2 is becoming an enormous hit in cinemas everywhere, from its special effects to its storytelling.
I for one am extremely amazed with the delivery of Guardians Vol. 2, and I had to watch it twice so I can see again how really great this film is, and also so I can write this review/reaction post. The visual effects were mind-blowing, the verbal humor was lovable, despite the mild cusses (no complete F-bombs, don’t worry), the visual comedy was colorfully funny, the pacing was fast enough to be satisfying, the characters were well-developed, and the drama equates the level of its comedy. Oh, the soundtrack was also pleasing; good for that “chillax” feeling you want. Those qualities of the film, from my perspective, can surpass those of the first Guardians and even those of Ant-Man, which almost shares the comedic concept (did I mention that Edgar Wright was the exec producer of Ant-Man and supposed director? That man’s really good in visual comedy. Take The Cornetto Trilogy and Scott Pilgrim vs. The World as examples. Also, don’t miss his new Baby Driver film.).
**SPOILERS AHEAD! DON’T READ IF YOU HAVEN’T WATCHED GUARDIANS VOL. 2 YET!**
Again? Another CGI de-aging? Well, this one from Guardians Vol. 2 is just as okay as that from Ant-Man’s Michael Douglas. That from Captain America: Civil War on Robert Downey, Jr. as young Tony Stark? It’s not actually bad, but it’s also not good enough. It looked unfinished, but that really nailed the young RDJ look. Tron: Legacy’s Jeff Bridges-de-aging wasn’t good-or-bad as well. All I can say is CGI de-aging is just meh-okay, but hey, it’s necessary to the story so, okay, go with it.
I have said that I don’t read comics but gain sometimes knowledge about them from the internet or hearsay, but Ego The Living Planet (played by Kurt Russell) being the father of “Star-Lord” Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) instead of the comic-original J’Son of Spartax is kind of ridiculous, but somehow it worked, as the creators gave a different take on the origins of Star-Lord, making a powerful Celestial-hybrid version of him.
I didn’t expect to be Ego to be a villain at first, but unlike what a lot people say about “underdeveloped” villains of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, like the first Guardians’ Ronan The Accuser (Lee Pace), Ego’s villain development was a huge jump from supposedly-good-guy, and man, it was good and a nice representation of his power, and a good twist as well, when Star-Lord finds out that Ego was the one who caused his mother Meredith (Laura Haddock) to have that cancerous tumor on her head that lead her to her death in the first film.
Talking about comedy, we expect Baby Groot (Vin Diesel) to be the biggest funny highlight of the film, but he’s just under who’s actually the highlight: Drax The Destroyer (Dave “Batista” Bautista). Yes, the brawns of the titular ragtag group is the comic relief. Sorry, Groot, but you’re still the cutie relief of the film. You’re so adorable to be killed, as said by—*chuckles*—Taserface (Chris Sullivan).
What makes him so are his laugh reactions, like when Mantis (Pom Klementieff) revealed that Star-Lord is romantically, sexually in love with Gamora (Zoe Saldana), his (back to Drax) awkward descriptions to Mantis, calling her ugly and horrible but beautiful on the inside (before for you criticize this part, I just wanna say that I have zero problems with “ugly” people), and his misinterpretations of figurative language. Also, his riding-along with Rocket’s (Bradley Cooper) quips are the best, like when the latter threatened Star-Lord to put something under his pillow, and it’s gonna be turds of Drax, Drax laughed and responded “I have famously huge turds”. His awesome moment, however, is when he shot down one of The Sovereign’s drones whilst screaming “DIE, SPACESHIP!” That I can say is one of the subtle signs of Drax’s character development of finally understanding nonliteral speech, aside from the first movie’s “finger-to-the-throat means death” scene.
Other comedic highlights include Rocket’s traps set for the Ravagers when they hunted down him and Groot, plus Yondu (Michael Rooker) when they rebelled against him for his “softness” on Star-Lord, Taserface’s name that even made The Sovereign’s High Priestess Ayesha (Elizabeth Debicki) laugh, plus Rocket’s insults to him, the excessive amount of hyperspace jumps caused by Rocket upon escaping from the Ravagers and arriving to Ego (the planet which is also part of Ego the man, of course) which caused the faces of Rocket, Groot, Yondu, and Kraglin (Sean Gunn, brother of director James Gunn) to warp and distort, and of course, Groot misunderstanding Rocket about pressing the right button to set off the bomb to blow up Ego. Another funny Groot moment is him shown to be growing up to his teen state, where Star-Lord scolds him of shedding leaves and growing roots too much to fill his room while playing a tablet game. I also laughed out loud when Star-Lord compared Yondu to Mary Poppins when the latter was holding on to his whistle-controlled arrow while landing in a manner Mary Poppins does with her flying umbrella. And lastly, subtly funny moment is where Star-Lord is given by Kraglin a final memento from Yondu: a Zune player, serving as a replacement for his Walkman destroyed by Ego and has about “300 songs”.
Cameos! Stan Lee’s cameo, shown in both the “hyperspace jump scene” and the post-credits scene, was also a funny highlight when he tells his stories to what seemed to be the Watchers. This somehow is a hint to who Stan Lee really is in the MCU, which producer Kevin Feige confirms that he is a single character roaming around the films. Is he also a Watcher? Cameos also count Howard The Duck (Seth Green) who first appeared in the first film’s post-credits scene, Cosmo The Space Dog’s return, celebrity cameos like Sylvester Stallone, Michael Rosenbaum (Lex Luthor from Smallville), Ving Rhames (Luther Stickell from the Mission: Impossible franchise), and Michelle Yeoh (Yu Shu Lien from Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) as the first Ravagers, whose characters are based on the original incarnations of the Guardians Of The Galaxy: Stakar Ogord, Martinex, Charlie-27, and Aleta Ogord respectively, Miley Cyrus (WHAT?!) in an uncredited voice role of another Guardians original Mainframe, David Hasselhoff when Ego shapeshifted into Star-Lord’s childhood hero Michael Knight from Knight Rider, and rock icon Rob Zombie as the voice of a Ravager. Jeff Goldblum (David Levinson from Independence Day and Dr. Ian Malcolm from Jurassic Park) appeared dancing along with the main characters in the credits role as his Thor: Ragnarok character The Grandmaster.
Easter Eggs! A Marvel movie cannot be complete without itty-bitty, or maybe as large as the cameos, details referencing other Marvel works. Aside from the appearances of the original Guardians as mentioned earlier, Ego’s Celestial being was one Easter Egg. Yes, it’s a largely seen Egg that’s part of the plot but this can mean the Celestials, known to be “judges” of the worthiness of worlds, will actually be in the MCU. Adam Warlock was also revealed in one of the mid-credits scenes, where Ayesha was shown staring at his birth pod, wanting to call it “Adam”, and as we know, Adam Warlock is a genetically-engineered being and an original ally of the Guardians and the Fantastic Four (whose film rights should have been on Marvel Studios’ hands right now and not of Fox’s) but also a dangerous villain due to his Magus alter-ego.
The visual effects did not fail to amaze. The work of Industrial Light & Magic shows their greatness with stunning visuals of the environments and the powers. Really feeling like they’re actually there and the characters are actually on those environments.
Fun put aside, the story was well done. Its pacing was fast but it told a lot for us to know about the characters. It made those characters grow more and show some changes in them in such situations. Nebula’s (Karen Gillan) relationship with Gamora was somehow built on her quest to win against her, despite keeping on saying she wants to kill her but just wanting to “have a sister”. Rocket’s feelings about Yondu comparing himself to him were kind of heartbreaking when we know of Rocket as someone who doesn’t care about everything around him, and that somehow built also a relationship between the two, and made them realize about losing friends. Speaking of Yondu, his sacrifice to save Peter was the biggest dramatic highlight. His revelation to be the real father figure to Peter was impactful, and his death is heart-shattering and it left no eye dry.
The soundtrack. Ah yes. It’s really good to listen to. Those 80’s songs, like what the first film delivered, are unique add-ons to the film making the viewers feel a different feeling, and they really fit into the scenes, from the swooning “Brandy” by Looking Glass to the tear-jerking “Father And Son” by Cat Stevens. “Come A Little Bit Closer” by Jay & The Americans was a perfect fit, title-wise, to the scene of Ravagers hunting down Rocket and Groot [and Nebula], and as mentioned, “Father And Son” was so sad to show Peter’s realizations of Yondu being his true “Daddy” in spite of wanting to feel the love from his blood-related father [Ego].
Overall I give Guardians Vol. 2 a solid 4.5 out of 5. Marvel has done yet another stunner with this film, compared to Doctor Strange which is also a visually great MCU entry, and Guardians Vol. 2 surpasses the fun and excitement of the first film, while keeping the flow started by it to show good development.
