What sort of expectations or guesses do you have for Hickman's upcoming Ultimate Spider-Man series? How different of a continuity/status quo do you think Hickman is planning to have for Earth-6160 compared to the classic Spider-Man mythology/timeline? Maybe Uncle Ben ends up being alive?
Quick rundown of thoughts in the wake of the second issue solicit dropping:
Ultimate Green Goblin is starting off as a hero which fits with my theory that it will be Harry. Both Peter and Harry are going to become heroes as a result of their loved ones getting killed by the Illuminati in the Ultimate Universe one shot. That's their "Uncle Ben gets shot" moment, and Harry will believe the official story that Tony is to blame.
Like Peter I think Harry will start off married with kids - to either Liz Allen as in 616 and which fits with Liz showing up in Ultimate Invasion #1, or the far more interesting choice of pairing Harry with Gwen. Where Peter and MJ are going to fight the Illuminati, I bet Harry and Liz/Gwen will be pro Illuminati and ultimately are going to try and take Howard's former spot as ruler of North America. That desire will cause a split between the Parkers and the Osborns which will fuel Harry's descent into madness.
Peter will be working as a scientist at Oscorp or Alchemax, having been groomed to be one of the technocrats himself. Doc Ock will be his superior/mentor in the same way as Insomniac Otto. Most of the villains will be created as a result of Oscorp experiments.
Jameson will actually be pro-Spidey and anti-Goblin which causes tension between Peter and Harry.
The daughter will get powers but the son will get Peter's smarts, mirroring the situation between Franklin and Valeria in Hickman's F4.
Maybe the Multiverse will play a role? Perhaps DoomReed will show 6160 Peter the life he was "supposed" to have and Peter will have to be a hero with the knowledge his life was supposed to be very different (including the knowledge that his best friend is liable to turn on him and become his enemy).
Yes I'm rooting for Ben to be alive with May dead, I think that's a fantastic way of inverting things which Hickman has been consistently doing with this universe. His F4 run was built on the Nathaniel-Reed-Franklin relationship, I see a potential repeat in Ben-Peter-Peter's son.

stevetony and emotional hurt/comfort after nightmares? I hope the prompts help with getting you back into the writing groove
They were like bedtime stories, his nightmares. Horrible ones, ones he didn’t ask for, but ones that were old and familiar, ones that he knew every line of, like the stories Jarvis, Ana, and his mother would take turns reading to him as a kid. But instead of valiant knights saving the day, it was monsters that populated his stories now. Ghoulish, hideous creatures, swarms of them darkening the sky, Earth’s very own plague of locusts. Fathers who groomed their children for war, for their own gain; fathers who thought they knew best and wreaked irrevocable damage, who seemed truly sorry to some degree that it had to come to this but went through with their plans anyway. Monsters who stood by as their children died in front of them or in their arms.
There were no victories in his dreams, no happy endings.
The compound was as empty and dark as deep space, and Tony was tempted to ask FRIDAY to turn on some lights except he didn’t want to see empty hallways either. The compound was too big for the few who had survived. Had been too big since Steve had gotten most of the kids after the split over the Accords.
He should have kept the tower except it was much harder to ignore what happened in a city halved and gripped by chaos.
Tony paused at the end of the hallway. The lab or the kitchen. Left or right.
He went right. He hadn’t gone into his lab since he came back. He didn’t see a point. There was no battle to win. There could be no more battles after this. The war had been one to end all battles.
That was what Thanos had wanted, a peace of sorts.
He paused at the entrance of the kitchen. The air was thick with the rich, creamy scent of coffee.
Steve was sitting at the island, clasping a mug and staring at nothing.
“Oh.”
He had said it aloud without thinking. Steve was looking at him now, as surprised as he was, as tired as he sometimes looked the few times they had bumped into each other at the tower during the dead hours of the night.
“Just like old times,” Tony almost said, but they were too aware of the way it wasn’t, too sad about that for him to say it, and he didn’t want Steve to know that he couldn’t sleep anyway.
Steve pulled out the chair beside him. It felt like both a command and an invitation. Tony walked over, through the too big kitchen, where Wanda and Vision used to try recreating the dishes from Wanda’s childhood once a week, Wanda and Vision who were d—don’t think about that, don’t think about that—and sat down next to Steve.
There.
I’m not afraid of you.
Except…except now that he was next to Steve, it had seemed silly, that fight or flight impulse, when all he wanted to do was lean against Steve’s shoulder and close his eyes, to go to sleep with Steve solid under him, his presence a weight that would anchor him as he slept, that would remind him that Steve was alive and with him, not dead, not countries, planets, or galaxies away.
Tony grabbed an apple from the fruit basket on the counter and pretended that that was what he was there for. Pretended to be wide awake, fresh off a good night’s rest, not startled awake by nightmares. Bright-eyed, bushy-tailed, ready to face a new day—that was him.
“Early start for you too?” he asked. He rolled the apple between his palms. It was waxy. He had no desire to eat it, the very thought of biting into it unappealing.
“Something like that.”
Steve was lying. He was dressed in a plain T-shirt and worn sweatpants, home clothes or PJs, not his workout gear. Tony hated himself for knowing the difference.
“Well, don’t mind me. I’m just gonna…” He gestured with the hand holding the apple as though he were going to eat it, not put it back the minute Steve left the room.
Steve didn’t answer even as the seconds trickled by excruciatingly slow, every second an uncomfortable weight stacked on Tony’s back, trying to bend it forward.
“On second thought, I’ll eat it in the lab. I’ve got work—”
“Why are we doing this?” Steve cut in, muted and somber.
“What?”
Steve faced him. For the first time since they met, Tony thought Steve showed all of his hundred years.
“Pretending we’re fine, like we don’t know why the other person’s in the kitchen at four in the morning when we’ve done this before. I know why you’re here; it’s why I am. There’s no reason for us to keep doing this. But we do.”
He knew Steve was right. There wasn’t any point, not after the war. It was a useless exercise, trying to bullshit and convince the other person that they were okay when nothing and nobody was. All those walls, all those pretenses that they had kept up all these years to, what, show that they didn’t need each other? Show that they cared but hide exactly how much? To avoid getting hurt?
They had already hurt each other. They had already realized that they needed each other—more than they might have even realized—too late and at the worst possible time. Thanos had seen to that. They had seen to that.
“I don’t know,” Tony lied. I’m not afraid of you, he had thought only minutes before. He elected to go for the truth; Steve had opened up to him, and he never did that. Tony could understand the urge not to even if his didn’t come from an entirely self-sacrificial place like Steve’s. He set the apple down and kept his hand there, a foot away from Steve’s, kept calm and kept from fidgeting. “Hard to imagine anything can hurt me after everything. And yet,” he said, smiling humorlessly.
And yet.
“I didn’t want to hurt you. I still don’t,” Steve said. “And I won’t ever hurt you like that again.”
Tony could feel the weight of Steve’s eyes; he hadn’t looked away from Tony once since he had asked the question. He concentrated on his hand instead of returning Steve’s gaze, on keeping it flat and unmoving against the table.
“My promises probably don’t mean much to you,” Steve said, and Tony knew that he was thinking about the phone.
He stayed quiet.
Steve seemed to take that as affirmation, nodding once as if he had expected it before looking at Tony again. “I do mean it, though,” he said. “I want you to know that.”
He did.
That wasn’t what he was afraid of, betrayal. He knew, just as Steve did, that there were decisions—mistakes—that he had made that he would never make again.
He was afraid of allowing himself to love Steve and of Steve loving him back. If Steve accepted his heart, he would have it in his hands, and he knew their strength, their great ability to destroy. He had come close to giving it away, once.
“I won’t ever hurt you like that again.”
What would Steve do if he loved him? What promise could Steve make to him if he loved him back? Because he knew that Steve would if he did. He had seen it personally, what it was like to have Steve swear an oath to someone he cared about. Even time, enemy to all, couldn’t stand up to him; nearly a century after they had met, after decades had ripped them apart, Steve did his damn best to be by Barnes’s side, to hell with the world.
Tony wondered if Steve dreamed of Barnes dying in front of him. If his mind flooded with panic as he scrambled to hold Barnes together, to keep him from disintegrating in his arms even if he wanted nothing more than to scrub Barnes’s ashes off of him.
It was a while before he spoke, but when he did, he decided to meet Steve halfway and give him what he wanted. Answering Steve’s promise, telling him he knew Steve would keep it, would be useless. Steve wouldn’t believe him, and it would be a long while before he would. But this…this he could give. His nightmares were worthless to him; he had a surfeit of them. But to Steve they would have value, would represent something else—a different form of trust.
“I dreamed of him tonight. The kid,” he offered carefully. Evenly. His hand felt dirty. He wanted to pull it back into his lap, under the table and out of Steve’s sight, to rub his palm against his thigh over and over again.
Steve let go of the mug and lowered his hand next to his.
“I saw Bucky in mine.”
Their pinkies were a hair’s breadth apart, not quite touching. Tony wanted to loop his around Steve’s and bring Steve’s hand towards him.
He wanted to hold it, but there was something grimy stuck under his nails and his entire hand was coated with a layer of something thick and suffocating. He couldn’t touch Steve like that.
“He dies,” Tony said hoarsely instead of touching him. “Every night and all I can do is watch.”
He stayed as motionless as possible, brittle and rigid—the smallest movement would break him.
He didn’t think he could be put back together if it did.
He started when Steve covered his hand with his, his fingers bumping against Steve’s.
Steve curled his fingers over them, stilling them. “Me too,” he said. His hand felt warm and clean, reassuringly solid over Tony’s. Protective.
Tony turned his palm upwards and linked their fingers together.
“Every night,” Steve added quietly as he did. He stared at their clasped hands, not doing anything except sweeping a trail across the back of Tony’s with his thumb, cleansing him.
Tony held onto him, firmly, and Steve answered him with a gentle squeeze of his own.
They stayed like that, not saying anything and not letting go, sitting together in the too empty room, waiting for dawn to arrive.

SteveTony Weekly - April 11
I’m just gonna stop saying I read a lot this week. I apparently always read a lot. Here we go. Remember to comment/kudos if you enjoy!
**Indicates my recent favs
~*~
It’s not the mountain we conquer by Darkyu (Ultimates/14k)
Steve Rogers was known to be an honest man. And, really, he is. But even Captain America has his limits and Tony is well known for challenging them.
Steve, after trying it all, decides that he needs to try a different tactic to get Tony to quit stubbornly denying the love that they have for each other.
Luckily for Steve, he has some powerful friends in the magic field that could offer him a final solution to his problem.
crash love by s_hylor (Ultimates/21k)
It’s just sex. Just sex between two consenting adults who don’t have feelings for each other beyond the camaraderie that comes from being on the same team.
It’s just sex. Until it isn’t. It’s not love. Until it is.
bros before by tsukinofaerii (Ultimates/8.8K)
For a year, Steve and Tony have had a bromance of epic proportions, bonding over cheesy movies and long, dateless nights where they reminisce over love lost. But now something threatens to interfere with their precious Thursday Night Movies: a woman. Dun dun duuuuun.
there is no ‘i’ by jadedoll (MCU/20K)
Summary: The reasons not to join the Avengers were many and varied. The problem was that when Captain America smiled at him, Tony had trouble remembering what they were.
bridge over troubled waters by vokosigan (Endgame fixit/5.8k)
After Thanos is defeated, Tony throws a party, like one does. Steve is there, and Tony thinks it's an awesome idea to seduce him, for old times' sake. Things get... complicated.
scratching posts & love by talesofsuspense (MCU/7.6K)
There’s a million reasons he can’t and shouldn’t get a pet, but his therapist apparently thinks they’re all just bad excuses and tells him as much.
Thicker than water by StarkatHeart (Superfamily/25k)
Neither of them would admit it, but blood does count for something.
When Peter Parker discovers his biological father is actually none other than Tony Stark, it's not exactly news that's well received. By either party. But they're Avengers. They're teammates. They'll just have to work through it. ...Or maybe just ignore it.
Five Times Tony Stark Misjudged Steve Rogers (and one time he didn’t) by sweatervest (MCU/5K)
There’s plenty of weird shit to deal with after fighting aliens, like “How Does One Dispose of Alien Remains Without Poisoning the Water” and “Wow Insurance Companies Are Really Not Equipped for This,” but Tony suspects that “Steve Rogers is Actually Very Funny” and “Steve Rogers is a Stealthy Bastard” probably shouldn’t be as close to the top of the list as they are.
Timeline runs from after Captain America: The First Avenger to just after Avengers: Age of Ultron.
punch-drunk lust by jellybeanforest (A/B/O / 10k)
The interpersonal chemistry between Steve Rogers and Tony Stark is undeniable, but both being alphas, they are not sexually compatible in the slightest. So, they come up with a method to determine who tops: a no-holds-barred wrestling match for dominance with Tony in his suit to even the odds.
Based on a Cap-IronMan Kinkmeme Prompt requesting Alpha Steve/Alpha Tony. For the Cap-IronMan Bingo 2019 Round 2 – Fist Fight.
***marty mcfly never had to deal with this by sweatervest (MCU/ 15k)
Tony's latest project goes less "renewable energy" and more "slightly explosive time machine," and Howard Stark arrives from 1946.
Why, Steve would like to know, are time and space going to such lengths to cockblock him?
***side effects by elimymoons (Ultimates/ 29k)
"So what I'd like to propose," Tony continued on, "is for you to let me help you out a little, yeah? We'll work off some of this energy, some of this adrenaline, and you don't have to worry about hurting yourself anymore, okay?"
Steve's in a bit of trouble. Tony wants to help him out. Sexily.
breakwater by Captain_Panda (Civil War AU/ 18K)
Captain America: Civil War AU.
When the helicopter hits the water, Captain America and the Winter Soldier both go under. Only the Winter Soldier escapes.
By the time Tony Stark and company find Steve Rogers, he's been dead for nearly an hour. Brought back from beyond the brink, Steve is a changed man.
Things will never be the same.
A breakwater is "a barrier that breaks the force of waves, as before a harbor."
***breathing at the same time by softanticipation (Endgame Fixit/47k)
The dust settles and the stones are returned, leaving Steve more aimless than ever. In a world that doesn’t seem to need him anymore, he eventually learns that purpose goes beyond war and love is more than just a four-letter word.
Featuring two halves of a road trip, sidewalk chalk, and a man with whom Steve never expected to share a pull-out couch.
*
Steve sighs, and wants to bang his head against the cabinets. “You’re welcome too, Tony,” he says wearily. “I’m not trying to keep anyone away.”
“No,” Tony says bitterly. “You just left without telling anyone where you were going, without any way for us to contact you.”
It stings, but it’s not untrue.
falling into you by sabrecmc (MCU-canon divergent/53k)
Tony and Steve end up as fuck buddies after the events of The Winter Soldier until Steve calls it off. When Loki's spell wipes all of Steve's memories since the last time Loki was in town, Tony decides it will be so much easier to just not tell Steve they had something of a relationship. Spoiler: It isn't.
Or, how Steve fell in love with Tony and forgot about it, and how Tony fell in love with Steve and realized it.
A thousand kisses deep by laireshi (Ultimates / 3.5k)
Steve doesn't seem too happy when Steve Rogers of Marvel Ultimate gets transported into their universe. He seems even less happy when Tony and the new Steve get closer to each other.
The Best of Intentions by Sineala (Ultimates / 2.4k)
Steve Rogers, Earth-1610, attempts to warn Steve Rogers, Earth-616, away from Tony Stark. Events do not proceed as planned.
***the word I use to describe by nanasekei (Ultimates/2.6k)
“Here,” Steve says, in guise of explanation. Tony’s expression is puzzled. He takes his head off Steve’s shoulder, straightening his posture.
“Is that for me?”
“Yeah,” Steve breathes. His stomach is clenching in anxiety, which is ridiculous – it’s just a fucking ugly scarf, Tony knows so many people, he’s got to have gotten worse gifts before. “It’s, uh. A bit late.”

Is 616 Tony a Democrat or Republican or neither? I’ve seen posts comparing him to Trump (barf!)
Wow. Geez. You don't ask easy questions, do you, anon?
First off, I am going to assume that whoever was comparing 616 Tony to Trump was trying to slander Tony. And I will tell you that we do in fact have 616 Tony's canonical opinion of Trump -- yes, Donald Trump exists on Earth-616 and has been referenced in several comics -- and he doesn't seem to like him much. I mean, this is back when Trump was primarily being known for being a New York businessman. They canonically ran in the same circles and Tony canonically knows him. He doesn't like him.
Here's Tony in Iron Man v1 #227 complaining that Trump bought him out of a building:
And here's Tony again in Iron Man v3 #37 being not especially thrilled when he thinks that the person he is about to meet is Trump:
(The person he is actually meeting is Tiberius Stone, which is also a very bad idea.)
I am also going to point out that due to the way Marvel likes to handle politics in its comics, I don't think we can say anything about the canonical political affiliation of most characters, because Marvel deliberately leaves that undefined. So to the best of my knowledge, we don't have a canonical statement about Tony's political affiliation and we probably won't ever get one.
But we can speculate based on canonical evidence, can't we?
My very long answer is under the Read More.
Your question is sort of framed as "tell me if Tony is a good or a bad person," and I would like to suggest that this is not really a useful framing for several reasons: (1) what the political parties currently stand for is pretty recent, actually, and Tony as a character predates a lot of the modern conceptions of the two parties; (2) the history of the Democratic Party specifically in New York, where Tony is from, is, let's just say, not 100% pure and unproblematic; and (3), when we're talking about someone with the amount of money, connections, and influence that Tony has, party affiliation generally doesn't mean the same thing it would mean for us ordinary mortals. What I mean by that last point is that there is a big, big difference between every one of the following list of statements: "I would vote for Republicans," "I am a registered Republican," "I would give very large amounts of money to Republicans," and "I would accept a political appointment in a Republican administration." For most of us, the last two of those points aren't ever going to be something that comes up in our lives, but they are going to be things that matter very much for someone like Tony Stark. And we have a canonical answer for at least one of those things. We can theorize about at least some of the rest of them.
I'm saying all that because I suspect you're really not going to like my answer.
I think that there is a very, very high chance that 616 Tony is a Republican.
I mean, I don't think he'd be a Republican right now at this exact moment in time, are you kidding me, but I feel like he has definitely been a Republican at some point in the past. Say, before Trump. One of those socially-liberal fiscally-conservative types. With a conscience. Sort of like Mitt Romney. Picture the kind of Republican Massachusetts likes to keep electing as their governor.
Yes, is possible that, since Tony is from New York, he's a lifelong Democrat. It is definitely possible. New York is heavily Democratic in our world, and barring contradictory evidence, that is probably also the case on Earth-616. But I think that, specifically because of the rest of Tony's background and the ways that Tony has interacted with the world of politics in 616, he is most likely to be a Republican. It doesn't mean he couldn't be a Democrat! I have no proof either way! In terms of several elements of his characterization -- say, his commitment to social justice and fighting inequity -- I would say he definitely leans Democrat, because these days that sort of thing is mostly the province of the Democrats, although I suspect that back when Tony was created it wouldn't have been out of character for a lot of Republicans. I'm just saying that Republican seems more likely. If you gotta pick one. I think you could definitely argue for either. He doesn't fit completely into either but his canon interactions with politics push me toward thinking he's a Republican, because he does several specific things that I think it would be unlikely that anyone other than a Republican would be given the opportunity to do at the specific time that he does them.
Yeah. I know.
Right. Okay. Tony is extremely, extremely rich, and even though I know that he is basically the fantasy of The One Good Ethical Billionaire (more on this in a sec), it's probably worth thinking about what actual real-life rich people do with their money in ways that intersect with politics. And the answer to that is, well, generally they give money to politicians who are favorable to, say, helping them continue to have money. Now, yes, as far as I know there is no evidence of Tony doing this in canon -- this is where all the conjecture comes in. So we ask ourselves, okay, if Tony were to endorse particular politicians because of this, what party would he give money to? Who would he want to get in good with? In most parts of the country, that would probably be the Republican party. But, specifically in New York, it's the Democrats.
So, yeah, one of the big points in favor of him being a Democrat is that, well, Democrats traditionally run New York. The class of old-money New York elites are pretty stereotypically Democrats. And that would include Tony. Which is not to say that he couldn't be a Republican, but if he wants to get anywhere with New York politicians, and I suspect he probably does because he is trying to run a series of very large businesses and he owns a fair amount of real estate including several buildings whose permitting processes I can only imagine fall into the category of “probably highly irregular" -- I mean, he has multiple jets that he regularly lands on his house and secret underwater tunnels for a submarine -- he has to cozy up to Democrats. If he gives money to anyone involved in politics, that's who he gives money to. Making superhero bases probably took a lot of money. A massive amount of money. The city planners probably cry when they see him coming.
(At one point I believe they did ban him from keeping the Quinjets in his house. That was when the Avengers had the Hydrobase.)
I tend to assume most people know something about the history of the Democrats in New York, or at least the history of US political parties in general, but the tl;dr version is that the parties haven't always stood for the same things that they do now. They also weren't always the same parties. And historically, in New York, the political machine gives you Democrats. That's just the way it is. The Democratic Party of the past was not really, um, devoted to all the same causes as the current Democratic Party. And it was very hard to get anywhere in New York and not be a Democrat. It still is. If you haven't read up on Tammany Hall, maybe you should. There was a lot of corruption. I mean, yeah, it's not currently a thing, but the Democrats remained in power in New York; it dissolved probably around about the time the Republican Party explicitly decided that the way to win the South was to appeal to the racism of white voters ("the Southern strategy"). Because, yes, before that a lot of white, conservative Southerners were traditionally Democrats. And then the Democrats split about civil rights, and, uh, the Republicans took in the racists.
Anyway! US political history is sure a land of contrasts! Rich New Yorkers are traditionally Democrats! That is a point for Tony possibly being a Democrat, yes. Moving on!
But Tony is not just a random old-money New Yorker. He inherited Howard Stark's money and Howard Stark's company. And Howard was, well, a defense contractor. And so was Tony, until he stopped making weapons. And, uh, being a defense contractor is, um, one of those things that is extremely, extremely Republican. No, I don't have stats to back this up. Just trust me. So, yeah, he's a rich New Yorker -- but he's also a defense contractor from a family of defense contractors. I would be amazed if Howard Stark were anything other than a Republican. Which is not to say that Tony could not be a Democrat anyway, but the job does come with a certain predisposition.
(Incidentally, one of the other things Tony inherited from Howard was his membership in the Hellfire Club, which is one of those things I keep forgetting about until canon smacks me in the face with it every few years.)
We all know that the conception of Tony, as a character, is basically the fantasy of the Ethical Billionaire. He is The Best At Capitalism. He has money and he is not corrupted by it. He has money and he uses it to do the maximum amount of good in the world because that is what he really, deeply wants to do. He supports a large number of philanthropic causes! He has a foundation named after his mother! He funds programs for low-income youth! He runs a homeless shelter for women! Throughout his history, he has been consistently portrayed as a deeply, deeply kind human being, who wants to help people. A lot of people! People who aren't like him! People who might not even like him! That is just... who he is, as a person.
And these days we tend to associate that kind of push for systemic change and caring about social issues and remedying inequity with Democrats, but that wasn't always the case. I think it still would have been believable coming from a Republican, oh, around about the time Tony came into existence. He was created back when you could be an elected Republican and, uh, push social policies that I think these days we would consider progressive. I mean, Eisenhower was the one who started integrating schools, right? The Republicans are the party of Lincoln! It's not like Republicans are prevented from doing good things. And I think we need to keep in mind that Tony dates from the early 60s when socially-progressive was still a thing Republicans could conceivably be.
So, yes, Tony is very kind. It's nice. We all like that about him. But also many of the ways in which he is kind to people are very much Republican fantasies. Like, yes, he's a great boss. He's close to his employees. They're like family. If any of his employees have problems, he helps them out on a personal, individual level -- and that, as an ideal, seems very Republican to me. I mean, he's a CEO, right? He's owned a lot of companies. Are any of them unionized? Combing through Wiki, I find one reference to a union in ToS 63, which is really, really early -- you know, back when unions were more popular. I can't find anything after that. And nothing is coming to mind. So, I mean, yes, we have now established his employees were at one point unionized, but he's certainly not known for, say, running a union shop. Part of the fantasy of the Ethical Billionaire is the idea that Tony's employees don't need unions because Tony is so kind and so generous and so personally selflessly good that he takes care of everyone who works for him. And the thing is, Tony actually does do this. He is fictional and therefore capable of achieving perfection.
Okay. He's a fictional character. Let's step back a little and think about fictional characters, and specifically the way Marvel Comics depicts fictional characters interacting with well-known real people. Many real people from our Earth do seem to exist in 616. Earth-616 is not our Earth in a vast number of ways, but one thing it shares with our Earth is presidents. Whoever is the real-life president when a comic comes out is pretty much generally president on Earth-616 at the time. Yes, I'm going somewhere with this.
Now, for whatever reason, Marvel often does not canonically refer to presidents by their names in dialogue, but the artists pretty much draw whoever is president at the time when someone in canon needs to meet the president. (Captain America seems to get to meet the president a lot. I'm sure you're shocked.)
There are a couple exceptions to "everyone who looks like the president is the president,” namely that Marvel says that the villain who was Number One of the Secret Empire in Captain America v1 #175, who attempted to conspire with aliens to take over the Earth, whom Steve watched commit suicide -- anyway, the official Marvel word is, I believe, that this guy is not Richard Nixon, but Steve Englehart, who wrote the comic, says it absolutely was:
And, yes, this is the incident that causes Steve to lose faith in America and become Nomad. You can kind of see why that would be traumatic. Marvel clearly had some feelings about Watergate they needed to process.
Anyway, I just wanted to put in a picture of that time Ronald Reagan was turned into a snake person. It's Captain America v1 #344:
I love comics.
More recent presidents still make appearances in the comics, and they are the president who was the real-life president at the time. For example, the president who pardons Steve for all his SHRA-related crimes in Who Will Wield The Shield is definitely Obama:
And that means that I must also unfortunately inform you that Hydra Steve also received a presidential pardon:
Though the issue in question (Captain America v9 #8) does not specifically name the president, following the "whoever is the actual president is the 616 president" rule, the president who canonically pardoned Hydra Steve is... Donald Trump.
Let's just pause here to contemplate this. Take as long as you need.
(I was today years old when I learned that Hydra Steve has been dead in comics for over a year. Since the issue in which he was pardoned, actually. Which is an issue I am sure I read the day it came out, but somehow I missed the four entire pages where Hydra Steve is set on fire and burns to death while hailing Hydra with his last breath. I guess it wasn't memorable! I mention because I am pretty sure I am not the only one who missed this.)
Anyway. I do have a point to make here, and my point is this: Tony has received political appointments. Two of them, in fact. In the 2003-2004 Iron Man arc "The Best Defense," Tony becomes Secretary of Defense. He does get Senate confirmation; it's not a deputy appointment. He actually gets unanimous confirmation. And I know that Tony had this job is a fact that everyone knows about Tony, but I feel like a lot of people may not be totally conscious of the timeframe involved here, and by that I mean that he is absolutely, positively, the Secretary of Defense for Earth-616's George W. Bush. Yes, I am sure of this.
Here is Tony with the president in Iron Man v3 #78, being told he got the job:
Yeah. That’s George W. Bush.
Can a Cabinet appointment cross party lines? I mean, sure, it's possible. I am not the kind of giant politics nerd who has this memorized, but there is in fact, a Wikipedia page for US political appointments across party lines. And it looks like there have been five cross-party Secretaries of Defense and five Secretaries of War. So, I mean, yes, it's happened, but it's fairly rare. None of the cross-party Secretaries of Defense (deputy secretaries excluded, since they weren't confirmed, obviously) were ever Democrats appointed by Republicans. And since we're looking at Dubya's administration specifically, it looks like only one of his Cabinet appointees (Transportation) was cross-party. So it looks like he in particular would not have been especially likely to appoint a Democrat to his Cabinet, since in real life he only had the one.
So to me it seems that the most likely party affiliation for Tony has to be Republican, because of this. Sure, the appointment could have crossed party lines. But I feel like it's just... not likely. Being a Republican Secretary of Defense in a Republican administration just seems way, way more possible.
(Also I'd like everyone to remember that Tony is replacing the previous Secretary of Defense because the previous Secretary of Defense was secretly the Red Skull and released an engineered flesh-eating virus at Mount Rushmore. Just, y'know, to set the mood.)
What's more, Tony gets a second political appointment from the Bush administration. It's not a Cabinet position, but he does become the Director of SHIELD in 2007. Here Tony is with the president, slightly earlier, in Civil War #1:
This is not really as good a likeness of Bush as the previous and I guess you could argue that the artist was drawing A Generic Politician but I feel like, y'know, it's probably still meant to be Bush. And Tony may not have wanted this particular job -- we know he definitely didn't -- but he absolutely wanted to be Secretary of Defense. So we know that he is definitely fine with serving in a Republican administration.
So, yeah, that's my argument: odds are pretty good that Tony has, at some point in his life, been a Republican. Maybe not right now. But probably in the past.
Having said that, given the way Marvel handles politics, I don't think it's likely to ever be much of an issue in canon; the Avengers mostly just tend to get to get along with whoever the president is at the time and I can't recall really anything about partisan issues. However, you're never going to convince me 616 Steve was anything other than a New Deal Democrat -- even though I know that in Cap #250 he turns down both the Democrats and the Republicans when they ask him to run for president -- because, I mean, come on. I assume that he and Tony probably try not to discuss politics ever anymore, because we all know how the SHRA went. They probably mostly agree, but when they disagree, people have a tendency to end up dead.
That was probably more than you ever wanted to know about my thoughts on this topic.

Why Steve Rogers is not ruined by Endgame
People often make the statement “Steve Rogers wouldn’t just remain hidden throughout the 20th century while people suffer”.
Doctor Strange literally looked into 14,000,605 timelines in which only one resulted in the Avengers’ victory in the conflict with Thanos.
Did you not think that maybe things just have to play out that way in order for 14,000,605 timelines to end up with the outcome where Thanos is defeated. Because he’s still going to show up in a branched timeline.
Tony Stark was captured during the war in Afghanistan. Steve would’ve had to let 9/11 happen, because without that event it’s likely that Tony wouldn’t have gone to Afghanistan and ended up becoming Iron Man.
Saving Bucky prevents the existence of the Winter Soldier. That means the Winter Soldier never assassinated the Starks and Tony grew up a different person. Howard may have run the company for a lot longer if he’d lived. Tony wouldn’t have had to take ownership of the company so soon, meaning again he may have never become Iron Man. Without Iron Man in that moment, there to snap his fingers Thanos would’ve won.
In fact, the time heist wouldn’t have even existed without Tony’s input. Thanos could’ve arrived in Wakanda and snapped his fingers with no hope of reversing it. Tony would have never created Ultron as a response to the Battle of New York. Which would’ve ended with New York destroyed because there was no Iron Man to divert the missile.
Without leaving things the same, outside of the small change of marrying Peggy. Thanos could well have shown up at any point and completed his plan with no way to prevent or reverse it because Doctor Strange was implying (without saying it) that Tony’s presence was crucial to the successful timeline.
This is the issue people often forget to address when discussing time travel. There’s not as much narrative freedom as people think there is, because changing big events has a knock-on affect.
Steve marrying Peggy isn’t such a big issue, because she would’ve still been encouraged to go on and do all the same stuff she did in the original timeline, likely by Steve because he wasn’t able to make any changes without affecting anything. None of their kids or grandkids had a significant impact on any big events leading up to Thanos’ snap either.
Steve may have saved a few thousand lives in the short term by making changes. But he’d have still ended up dooming the universe. So if you think through the variables; Steve not getting involved in anything throughout all of the 20th century is actually part of himself being a hero in order to prevent his branched reality becoming one of the 14,000,604 timelines where Thanos won.
Now, I know comic Steve was never comfortable going back in time, and that his relationship with Peggy in the comic story where he went back in time ended in divorce. MCU Steve and Peggy are not the same as 616 Steve and Peggy. They’re “adaptations” of the comics, so while their core character beliefs remain there, they can have different personalities and reactions to things. MCU Spider-Man is a fan of Star Wars! 616 Spider-Man has stated he doesn’t like Star Wars. They can be different on a level of opinion as long as their core character traits remain.
Edit: Inb4 being accused of being a “Mad Steggy stan”. No, I’m not all that invested in Steggy. I just love the character of MCU Steve Rogers and was glad to see he got a peaceful and happy ending to his story. Though if Chris Evans had remained in the role I’d have loved it to end with him sticking around in the present with Sam and Bucky. 🤷🏻♂️

Steve is an artist who does commercial work and draws comics. He spends his weekends teaching a drawing class for free at a local cafe. He doesn't recognize the guy who snuck into his class in a suit that looks like it costs more than his month's rent but he looks stressed and like he's running from someone. Falling in Love at the All Day Cafe by betheflame for BladeoftheNebula (MCU, 3.9k words)
One of the things about the particular block they lived on was that at the corner was, quite possibly, the world’s best bakery. It was Zagat rated and everything, so it wasn’t just Tony that felt that way. People flew in from all over the world to eat at All Day Cafe - Tony had bumped into Gwenyth Paltrow a few months ago and thought it was his best friend, Pepper, and that was awkward - and their pastries were no joke.
Run by Olympic Gold Medalist Steve Rogers, the cafe specialized in classic French pastries with American twists - like a pain au chocolat that also came encrusted in pistachios - and routinely sold out of their daily specials within two hours of opening. Peter, in particular, loved their peanut butter cookies that the baker swore was nothing special but Tony was wondering if they’d laced it with kiddie cocaine or something.
Tony, in particular, loved going to stare at the owner.
That’s What You Get (for waking up in Vegas) by bon3l3ssm1lk for JehBeeEh (MCU, 1.3k words)

Steve Rogers has medical debt so ridiculous that if he doesn't do something about it, his mother will be out on the street. He swallows his pride and agrees to a 'charity marriage' with the elusive son of Howard Stark, so Howard can show off how wealthy and generous they are. Maybe it would have worked, too, if he hadn't then met the love the love of his life on his last night of freedom.
Still (Until you moved me) by GuiltyFan21 for maythecat12 (MCU, 2k Words)
Steve hates it in the 21st century, where everything is so different. Life's a mess, the only constant thing being SHIELD coming to check on him. Until he meets Tony Stark, a brilliant genius who makes him feel more human.

Going on an objectively perfect, but absolutely horrible date might be the last sign Steve needs to finally talk to the guy he actually wants to be on a date with, so desperately.
(Spoiler: The guy is Tony)
Instinctual by mariana_oconnor for DepressingGreenie (MCU, 17k words)
The true effects of the super soldier serum are top secret. Only a few people know the truth - the serum turned Steve Rogers into a werewolf. Steve still hasn't found a way to tell Tony, even though they've been in a relationship for months. He can't bring himself to explain that he's a monster.

Breath of a Fish by picturecat for sheron (AA, 4.9k Words)
Their relationship was courteous, as it must be for any two witches who had no interest in feuding with one another properly. But to someone he could trust not to repeat his words, Steve often complained that Stark was basically a warlock, the way he carried on with esoteric nonsense and ignoring the needs of the people. For his part, Steve had no idea what Stark’s objection to him was. He knew only that the man so obviously delighted in teasing Steve that the people of their town regularly placed bets on when they expected them to come to blows.

how would you insert tiberius into the mcu? also who would you cast? 👀
Ohhh, man. Oh, man.
I actually have thought about this, and though I know neither the writers at Marvel Comics nor the minds behind the MCU intended for it to be this way, here are my thoughts:
So, comparing trauma isn’t ideal under most circumstances, but I think it’s relevant when considering 616 Tony’s response to abusers as opposed to MCU Tony’s response to abusers.
616 Tony was... treated pretty awfully. There’s evidence of both psychological and physical abuse on Howard’s part, and to some degree, Maria was complacent (as well as being a victim of Howard’s abuse herself, which is messy and nuanced). 616 Tony was also sent off to boarding school pretty early on in his life, and “boarding school syndrome” probably would have affected the sweet, sensitive boy he was at that age pretty hard. I think putting someone like Ty in his life in boarding school might have cemented this kind of warped view that he had of himself and of his place, even if Ty wasn’t outwardly awful to him in school (though it would be realistic to assume with little canon evidence that he was probably the more mean-spirited one in their “rivalry” and, Tony, just coming from a home wherein Howard was the man of the house, either didn’t pick up on it or thought he deserved it).
Of course, 616 Tony had his personality set for a long while before Ty was retconned into his childhood, but regardless, if we’re thinking about Tony as a man with one consistent timeline, I like to imagine that Ty Stone would have actually played a large part in Tony’s development.
So, 616 Tony is the way that he is. He’s a gentle guy, an understanding guy, a sweetheart... etc., etc. And, depending on what canon you look at, his thoughts on what he went through change.
Some canon depicts 616 Tony as someone who’s mostly let go of what happened to him, but he’s still casually bitter, with a “Stick it to the man,” and “Take that, Dad,” kind of attitude.
Some canon depicts 616 Tony as someone who has more of a, “He tried his best,” mindset, with more sad, forgiving undertones, even if he can acknowledge that certain parts of his childhood were pretty awful.
I think both of these depictions are valid and realistic-- I won’t go into the nuance of how those depictions have been treated here (or my preference between the two), but basically, you can pick and choose which canon portrayal of Tony’s response to his abuse you like best and run with it.
The thing is, Tony’s not the most mean-spirited guy, and even when he is in a, “Take that, Dad,” kind of mindset, he’s still not... super aggressive about it? He makes offhand comments and jokes, but we rarely see a Tony Stark who’s enraged about Howard (though there may be some of that coming soon, I’ve heard-- or, at least, another piece of Howard canon.)
So, 616 Tony, generally, has a more mellow response to abusers and mistreatment. He has a low self esteem, and he feels obligated to “do good”, because he has the resources and the smarts. He lives for this, literally. This is his only purpose on the planet. In major canon events, he has more of an, “I know you don’t know where I’m coming from, and you don’t have to, but this is what’s best for the world” kind of mindset. He’s alright being hated (though he certainly doesn’t love it), so long as he believes he’s doing the right thing. He feels no entitlement to love, nor a family. In his mind, he’s practically worthless aside from what he can do for the world.
I know, I haven’t mentioned Ty in some paragraphs, but. Bear with me.
MCU Tony, on the other hand, isn’t... like this, exactly. Sure, he also has the “My dad tried his best” mentality, but as far as we’re aware, his dad was mostly neglectful. This is awful, of course- it’s not an issue anyone should take lightly- but a common theme among people who have experienced parental abuse is that it’s easier to understand what happened to you than it is to understand what should have happened, but didn’t.
So, neglect, generally, can be shaky for victims to grasp. We can kind of make a note of that as a response to one kind of abuse, and then move on to some other things.
MCU Tony also seems to have an extremely low self esteem, but not no self esteem; 616 Tony feels entitled to nothing, whereas MCU Tony feels like you can give him the bare minimum, at least. He’s constantly stuck in between “Jesus, I’m kind of awful, aren’t I?” and, “Wow, I want to be loved and respected!”
Which is understandable. We can see it in how he acts during major events (ex. his pleading “You have to understand where I’m coming from,” in direct contrast to 616 Tony’s “You don’t have to understand, and also you’re allowed to hate me”). We can see it in how he acts in relationships and friendships; when he’s abandoned, he feels bitter as opposed to resigned. He’s still able to be angry on behalf of himself.
616 Tony just doesn’t seem to be as capable of this as MCU Tony is.
So, back to Tiberius. Of course, 616 Tony’s primary issues stemmed from his father, but like I said, I think the implied decade or so of tireless competition between Ty and Tony, as well as Ty’s generally shittiness, realistically could have done something to cement certain beliefs that Tony had rattling around in his brain already.
Given how different MCU Tony is, I think an MCU Ty would have to be:
1) A brief friendship or fling that Tony probably hardly remembers, 2) A school acquaintance Tony may have spent some time around, or, 3) Roughly the same as he was in 616, but with Tony reaching a breaking point much sooner than 616 Tony did.
MCU Ty and Tony would probably have a crazy different dynamic.
Honestly, given what we know about 616 Tony’s school days, I don’t think it would be wholly unrealistic to assume that Ty might not have even bothered with MCU Tony if he was too fight-y.
Ty feels like the kind of person who probably got along well with 616 Tony because of 616 Tony’s general timidity as a child, leaving lots of space for Ty to take up. If MCU Tony was sassier and more bitter in his younger years, I’m not even sure that Ty would find it easy to stick around. Because, you know. Ty’s a dick.
That being said, I like the idea of Ty across the multiverse. It really does feel, though, like most AU Tonys (with the exception of 1872, maybe) would sleep with Ty a handful of times and then, like. Leave him be.
Oh, and for a fancast:
Chad Michael Murray is a favorite of mine. I mean...
Y’know?
He just fits. And he did a good job of playing an asshole (albeit an asshole to a lesser degree) on Agent Carter.

The Massive SteveTony Rec List
Welcome to my Fairly Comprehensive, Ridiculously Long SteveTony Fic Recs, aka my collection of pretty much nearly everything I’ve read and loved so far over the years. This fandom is lucky enough to have some truly brilliant and dedicated authors, and I’m always discovering new fics to love, so I thought I’d share some of them with you! Fics will be sorted alphabetically tbh just because I suck at sorting stuff? Some of my personal forever-faves will be marked with ♡. This is by no means all of the fics this fandom has to offer, but if you’re new to the fandom, this should give you a good place to start, and if you’ve been a SteveTony shipper for a while, hopefully you’ll find something new! And if you do have a favorite fic that’s not on the list, please add it to the comments or rec it to me (because who doesn’t need more fics)!
Here’s just a few GREAT resources to check out if you’re looking for Even More fic recs:

Deep in the Heart of Me by Finely Honed (jaqen_hgar) - E | 255,926 words
There were days when the realization that he was someone’s father made Steve's head hurt, but mostly he was grateful that he could trust his instincts, because apparently Peter was what had been missing from his life. Yes, he still had lingering, unresolved issues from his time in the Army, and sure, he had what Bucky annoyingly referred to as a criminally untapped ass, and no life outside of work and Peter, but Steve was okay with how his life had turned out because of trusting his instincts.
Unfortunately, those same instincts had straight up betrayed him by going absolutely haywire upon being exposed to Tony Stark.

♡ In Which Tony Stark Builds Himself Some Friends (But His Family Was Assigned by Nick Fury) (series) by scifigrl47 - works rated T-M | 343,010 words
Steve takes things like personal responsibility and respect seriously. Tony's got people he pays to take care of that kind of thing, and anyway, he's pretty sure that he's going to die of some exotic disease in his workshop, because Dummy's still a little spotty about what is 'clean' enough to put on an open wound. The rest of the Avengers are in this for personal gain, except for Clint, he just enjoys being a dick.
And some things shouldn't be a chore.
♡ i will never stop losing my breath (every time i see you looking back at me) by theappleppielifestyle - G | 3,222 words
In all fairness, Tony is on autopilot when this happens. He’s had a long, hard day, and it’s possible he hasn’t slept in several long, hard days. He’s already half-asleep on the couch and he’s relaxed and happy, which is a rarity on its’ own, and he’s comfortable enough to let his guard down and get his body to do all the work without switching his brain on.
That should’ve been enough of a warning sign, but apparently not: Tony stretches, says goodnight to his teammates and gets varied responses back, and then he kisses Steve.
He only realizes what he’s done after he’s started to lean back, opening his eyes to see Steve’s blown wide, staring at Tony with his lips gone slack and a tiny furrow between his eyebrows.
if they be worthy by theappleppielifestyle - Not Rated | 824 words

Everything Tony Stark does is a dance. And it's super confusing for Steve.
Like Sunlight by sara_holmes - M | 8,309 words
Steve is used to the way it feels by now; a strange but gentle tugging connection under his sternum, warm tingles in his skin whenever they touch. That is, until Tony gets himself kidnapped. Then it kinda feels more like someone is trying to wrench his heart out through his ribcage.
Looking for Heaven by foxxcub - E | 31,950 words
When young Lord Anthony Stark learns Steven Rogers has enlisted in the army, he thinks he's seen the last of his tiny, headstrong, haughty stable boy. Even more unexpected, Steve agrees to a shocking proposal: they will marry, giving Steve the necessary funds to save his mother, and Tony the much-needed reprieve from harassing would-be suitors. It is a business arrangement, nothing more. But as time goes on and circumstances arise, Tony begins to learn that keeping his heart away from his husband is easier said than done.
♡ Love in a Time of Amnesia by Amuly - T | 6,241 words
Carol might have lost all her memories of her friends, but there's at least one thing she can know with absolute certainty: Steve and Tony are a couple. And if the rest of the Avengers insist on saying they're not, well: Carol will just have to put her amnesia to use, for the greater good.

Steve is at the sink, washing the few dishes that pizza for two generates, when he realizes that Tony is in love with him.
Our Weight In Gold by ann2who - E | 33,607 words
It was every cliché he’d ever heard about. Every sappy thing they wrote down in the magazines, every single thing he had always hated about the myth. It was as though he had experienced life without sight, and was suddenly bombarded by a storm of color. It was all-consuming, and rushing through his veins like molten lava, like his whole existence was suddenly filled with sunlight. A door opened, and a myriad of emotions stormed through his body: confusion, disbelief, loneliness, and so much fierce determination that it almost knocked Tony off his feet. And he understood then, understood that these emotions weren’t his. They were Rogers’.
This is a story about fate, self-doubt, choice and eventually—love.

Soulmates are a rare and cherished thing, a simple touch of hands bringing love that lasts forever. Tony's never been good at waiting, and when he has science on his side, who needs fate?

♡ Tales of the Bots by scifigrl47 (series) - most works rated M | 523,654 words

♡ The Twice-Told Tale by arysteia - E | 15,789 words
For someone he'd hero-worshipped for so long, Steve Rogers in the flesh is a pretty big disappointment. For one thing, he keeps looking at Tony as though he reminds him of someone else, and even if he never says anything, Tony's pretty sure it's his father. A lifetime of not measuring up to Howard's expectations is more than enough, thank you very much, and he's certainly not going to make an effort to live up to any of Steve's. Steve's pretty clearly failed to live up to his expectations, in any case, and that's not hypocritical at all.

It blindsides him one morning in the middle of his customary third cup of coffee; Steve walks through the door in loose cotton pants, shirt pulled up to wipe the sweat off his face from his usual morning workout, and Tony thinks: adorable.
♡ Unveil My Unsightly Heart by Mizzy - M | 43,019 words
Looking over an old prototype helicarrier for its future viability as a base for the Avengers should have just been a routine day full of bickering and non-adventure for Steve Rogers and Tony Stark.
But when they're catapulted into an alternate universe – where their alternate selves are married and battling with a mysterious threat – the two are forced to get over their differences in order to figure out what's going on, before it's too late.
Because there's more going on than meets the eye, and Steve and Tony falling in love might just be the most dangerous thing that can happen. Not just for one universe, but for all of them…
Wait & Sea by Lenalena - E | 53,244 words

Wash It All Away by ann2who - E | 8,634 words

What You Don't Know by Sineala - E | 9,808 words
In 1941, two strangers meet in a bar. And then Captain America meets Iron Man. And then Steve Rogers meets Tony Stark. They get it right. Eventually. And also they fall out of an airplane.
♡ when i run out of road, you bring me home by quidhitch - M | 18,466 words
“Oh, I won’t bother you.” The tone of Steve’s voice implies that he definitely will be bothering Tony, aggressively and frequently. “Don’t worry about it. I’ll keep to my farm, you keep to yours. Solitude together.”
Tony opens his mouth to argue that that’s not how this works, but he snaps it shut at the realization that Steven Grant Rogers is fucking with him. That twinkle in his eye has accelerated into a full-on glimmer, and the ends of his lips are twitching. Jesus, he hates this man. Or maybe he wishes he did. Tony can’t really tell the difference anymore.

♡ With Words Other Than These by RurouniHime - E | 14,690 words
The way Steve’s beating that bag, though—Tony traces the cadence as well as the lines of Steve’s body, and wonders if he might not need to know about the mission after all. There’s a lot of tension knotted in Steve’s shoulders, a frenzy to each punch. The precision lacks. Maybe Steve’s just getting started, and if that’s the case, Tony could be here a long, long while.

Sometimes Steve gets overwhelmed by how much he loves Tony.
Your Name on Every Wall by Sineala - T | 17,863 words
The Time Gem throws Steve into the past rather than the future, and in doing so, it gives him the opportunity to undo his past mistakes. But when it turns out that all of his mistakes involve Tony Stark, Steve begins to wonder if he's ever going to be able to mend things between them.

anon Speaking of space: What does 616 Fallout Tony think about Mister House? Would they have had their own version of the Space Race eventually?
oh boy, this is actually a good question - which we’ve been talking about in the closed fallout group server (bc let me tell you @gwinnetts and @america-redefined and @remnantrecruit are all invaluable fallout folks to bounce shit off of) - considering it’s a tad more difficult to squeeze 616 tony into the fallout setting as himself than it is mcu tony, because 616 tony (and 616 in general) is so much further along in his tech/as a superhero/in exploring worlds beyond earth.
but we’ve done it. we’ve made it work.
house and tony wouldn’t have been direct competitors before the war. like...robco and stark are both in the business, on the one hand, of consumer electronics, but what they do are different, and tony being so proprietary over his stuff makes a world of difference (because a 616 tony would have gone through the armor wars/been secdef/made things for shield/etc). house and general atomics could make their home computing systems and robots for military and civilian use, that’s fine, that’s not actually what stark really does even in a canon sense - they’re more clean energy and space travel/habitation and weapons/innovations for shield/the avengers as a whole/iron man. it leaves that gap there for robco and general atomics to still dominate the market they do prewar and for tony to still be over a different kind of massive tech conglomerate that services both the military and civilian markets (and if it were a thing in fallout, he’d be part of the cellphone race, too, which actually probably would have brought him and house into direct competition with one another but since it’s not really...).
tony would have known who house was, sure. it would be in his interest (because 616 tony stark is actually a guy with incredibly business acumen who gripes a lot, sure, but shoulders the running of his company because he wants to - he could step down as ceo at any time and it’s suggested maybe he should a lot - not because it’s just what he did before iron man) to keep an eye on potential business competitors and allies, even if they weren’t operating in the same reason. that said, i think house - assuming they’d have met - would have reminded him a lot of howard, which is...you know. not a good thing. but tony’s actually professional enough that resemblance wouldn’t be enough of a reason for him to give house a hairy eyeball, you get me? they’re two geniuses working in the same field, and yeah, tony’s competitive in nature, but, again, different arenas. they’d probably compete for military contract bids - but otherwise? neither one has a monopoly on the tech market.
now, if 616 tony had been awake during new vegas, that’s when things would get actually interesting. there’s a lot of hinky in how house handled taking over the strip, and that would be something that would get tony’s attention. vault 21 especially comes to mind here, tony ain’t about that...gentrification nonsense. urban renewal, sure, but straight up gentrification? nah. there’s something i think that would make him avenger frowny face at filling in a vault with concrete to boot people out when it’s been their home - especially as a guy who’s rebuilt his and his family’s homes innumerable times when bad shit has happened. i think it’s in the new vegas era with house at his height they’d butt heads. (and, depending on the path new vegas has gone through per different versions of the verse...a house ending could still see that happen with one that got pulled out of stasis during fallout 4.)
tony still thinks space holds some answers. they’re better equipped, in a lot of ways, for your average joe to handle the radiation of space - it’s everything else (loss of bone density, muscle mass loss, etc) that would be the problems to overcome and that’s something he might even be capable of finding an answer for; just because he’s not a medical doctor himself doesn’t mean he doesn’t have extensive knowledge of that kind of thing with everything he’s done to himself. but i think he’d see how house was going about it, and consider it to be the wrong way. house is basically - if you wanna get right down to it - making people beholden to him. and don’t get me wrong! 616 tony is entirely guilty of having done this in the past himself. there are points in his history you can look at him, and look at house, and see how incredibly similar they are, especially when it comes to moving people like pieces on a chessboard and using favors as leverage. the difference is, tony’s had people to hold him accountable when he does that, to correct his path and call him out and make him make amends for it, where house hasn’t.
this would be the point, i think, you’d see them come into direct opposition with one another, because tony can’t keep his nose out of things. he’s too curious - information is his bread and butter and he needs it to thrive as much as he does pushing the envelope on technology - and he’s too sure he’s right, and in the default case he’d have his moral compass (steve) to point him north, so. yeah. i think, in those circumstances you could see a space race, and it would be one tony would have a leg up on. he’s been in space, personally. he’s been a guardian of the galaxy, personally. he’s had contact with alien races outside of earth’s orbit, he’s been across the universe, to the cancerverse, and beyond. it’s a race, i think, house would lose, if you assume they could both acquire the necessary resources to make it happen, and in tony’s case he still has a leg up.
it’d be interesting to see how it developed, pitting two tech geniuses against one another like that. because for house it’s a plan, but it’s not altruistic. for tony, it’s because he’s a bleeding heart and he’d be doing, in his mind, what he considered to be best for humanity as a whole at his own expense. and they both know how to play the long game, when the only thing house really has on tony is longevity - like that’s his only real edge because otherwise in a lot of ways they’re evenly matched - and tony has his personal, intimate knowledge of space over house.
so, long story short, yeah, i think if you had them both alive at the same time, either prewar or post, you’d see them come into direct competition with one another over it and there would be a house versus stark space race. prewar i think it would come down to who got better funding. post? idk. i think house would lose.

with regards to where we’ll be going with tony’s story from here:
since this is in the general endgame spoilers tag bc i don’t want to needlessly spoil people: if you are a personal/not a mutual please don’t touch this post. this is a roleplay verse for my portrayal of tony, and not a general fix-it for fic. thanks.
alright. okay. i’ve done some thinking, and it’s time to talk about where tony’s mcu verse is going to go from here, since obviously i can’t do shit with him in actual mcu canon now and definitely do not agree that was a fitting end to his character arc. i think it was a huge step backward, but we’ll leave that for another time. onward.
it’s not everyday you get to roll at least three verses into one, amirite?
first off, things i am willing to keep in a case-by-case, mun-by-mun basis: marrying pepper, having morgan. again, case-by-case, and my tony will not be dying in some huge character-reverting sacrifice that could have been avoided (and was for him in the comics - he’s used the infinity gauntlet there, too, and survived, so i ain’t wanna hear it was the only way bc that’s bullshit). i will not have his big fear of being like howard, not being there for his kid, to come true. that’s just not gonna fucking happen.
that’s it. that’s fucking all.
instead, tony’s gonna mostly diverge post-civil war/post-spider-man: homecoming, and here’s how.
x. guardians of the galaxy arc: after civil war/spider-man: homecoming tony’s headed to space for a while. what, that sound silly? for reference, please see guardians of the galaxy vol. 3 (616) and the invincible iron man (2013 - 616) for inspiration and some details. anyway, tony’s off to space for a year. to have space adventures, because i still fucking despise the mcu making him terrified of it, when tony stark has always looked to the stars and seen potential - that’s a character quirk that’s existed since the first moon landing. it’s canon he does space repairs on shuttles and stations. it’s canon that he likes to go to houston and watch the shuttles land. so tony’s gonna get to spend some time among the stars, to see what he can see, to see what potential allies and good and advancement there is out there. and, if any gotg muns are interested, he can hook up and be a guardian for a while like he did in 616. events will vary, but he’ll spend around a year out there before coming home to Earth. there won’t be any hooplah he’s just gonna show back up one day. and it lets me play with godkiller, don’t @ me. this also leaves things open for stuff on sakkar? and with asgardians?? and all kinds of fun things to happen while out in the great black expanse.
x. director of shield arc: amanda, aren’t those reversed? yeah, so? this isn’t gonna be an exact translation of 616 to mcu. things are allowed to shift around a little. this one’s a pretty boilerplate plugging in of 616′s turn at shield’s helm. standard shield problems with bonus superhero bullshit. some of the same events may occur, they may not, but his tenure as director is going to be fairly shortlived one way or another, because tony stark is messy and not a desk jockey and can’t keep out of things (see: his own strike team). you know he’s gonna fuck up somewhere along the line eventually. and when he does, he’ll step down. does shield become hammer? well, that depends on the makeup of each thread. maybe sometimes. maybe sometimes after tony erases his own brain and has to be rebooted from a harddrive. it’s flexible.
x. illuminati arc: if any mcu/xmcu muns are interested in forming a mcu version of the illuminati, i’m fucking here for it. reed richards, tony stark, black bolt, stephen strange, namor, charles xavier - these six come together to each take an infinity stone (gem) and keep them separate and safe, swearing to never, ever use them. tony hides his in area 51. bad shit happens, gets fixed. ps. t’challa kind of knows what’s going on, the end.
after that? there’s a world of possibilities open. the avengers can reform, you can have formation of the various regional avengers, deal with old enemies that are supposed to be dead, pull from classic invincible iron man and avengers and tales of suspense, make up something completely new. because the point of this is that in the mcu, the avengers’ story was just beginning when it really, really got cut short with so many of the core members and pillars of support for them gone. this is, honestly, a bad end, that the 616 crew would try to avoid/fix.
#⚛ (protocol: psa) / gotta say this clear so you can get it straight#endgame spoilers#avengers spoilers#a4 spoilers#avengers endgame spoilers#avengers: endgame spoilers#mcu spoilers#marvel spoilers#iron man spoilers#// i think that's all the tags i've seen y'all blocking so#// anyway here's what's going on#// and i mean it's super flexible we can do w/e but#// in this house endgame especially does not exist#// we throw it out#// we throw it in the trash#// they had their chance to intro adam warlock#// and let nebula get her revenge#// and they fucked it up#// so we done#// we're peacing out#// we're making our own mcu#// with inhumans and fin fang foom

SteveTony Weekly - May 2
I know I say every week that I read a lot this week but I have been indulging in my favorite coping technique and so this list is ridiculously long. Twitter encouraged me. Blame them.
**Indicates my recent favs
~*~
On the inherent homoeroticism of cake decoration by welcoming_disaster (616/8K)
“She’s matchmaking, Barton,” Carol sighed.
“We,” Thor corrected, thumping himself hard in the chest, “art matchmaking.”
“Who, Cap n’ Tony?” Clint asked, his mouth full.
“Cap and Tony,” Janet confirmed, cutting herself a thin slice of egg and gently depositing it on her whole grain avocado toast, “it’s getting ridiculous.”
“Wait, I thought they were—“ Clint frowned, glancing around the room as though to confirm. Nothing but confused faces met his questioning gaze. “Huh. I really thought they were fucking.”
“And there is the crux of the issue,” Jess licked a bit of spaghetti sauce off her lip.
“Aye,” agreed Thor, “there’s rub.”
-----------
The team tries to set up Steve and Tony. Things don't go as planned.
Baby lovers like you and me (never say die) by FestiveFerret (Old Guard AU/7.5K)
The Avengers. They'd found him frozen in the ice, told him he was immortal, of all things. And with the way he'd lived through seventy years deep in the Atlantic, he found himself inclined to believe them. They'd also been very… convincing.
Without question, they integrated him into their unit - The Avengers, a secret team of unkillables seeking wrongs around the world and making them right, supported and housed by an enigmatic billionaire named Tony Stark. Their immortality, it seemed, was a secret to everyone but him.
Ready, set, bake by ChocolateCapCookie (Great British Bake Off/11k)
The Avengers are on a nationally televised baking competition, but nobody seems to have warned the producers that the Avengers, while they save the world everyday and put their loves at risk doing so, are a) insanely competitive, and b) absolutely terrible bakers. Steve Rogers, especially, has a competitive streak a mile wide, and he's determined to win this competition, but it's not easy when his only real opponent is also the man he's been in love with for years.
***To make flowers grow (in this barren heart) by SoldiersShield, KakushiMiko (Hanahaki AU/16K)
“You hide yourself away in your technology, but you are just as human as the rest of them. Your heart betrays your desire to possess.” Her gaze falls to the arc reactor, and Tony's blood runs cold in his veins.
“The Earth will reclaim what we have lost,” she says, dragging a hand over the chestplate of the armor. “It is you, and your kind-- your greed that pulls life from the soil as if it were nothing. You will reap what you have sown, Stark. The avarice in your heart will strangle the very life out of you.” Arna meets his eyes once more, a serene smile on her face as she leans forward.
“I hope he is worth dying for,” she murmurs, before digging her hand into his ribcage.
(Tony Stark falls in love with Steve Rogers. A rogue enchantress ensures he pays for it.)
Shelter from the storm by silkspectred (KidFic/5k)
Tony adopts a baby. Guess who's Majorly Fucked Up™ about it.
Keep on beating by itsallAvengers (Domestic Fluff/6K)
There were an awful lot of things Steve loved about Tony. But one thing in particular Steve could never get enough of was his heartbeat.
The good or bad thing by petreparkour (Multiverse/10k)
“It’s the metal suit,” Thor informed Steve, his normally-booming voice tinny over the SHIELD comms. “What did Stark call it—Iron Man?”
“But he’s down here,” Steve protested as the Hulk roared in Stark’s face, startling him into waking with a shout. “How could—”
“It’s damaged,” Thor reported. “But it looks different. More advanced. And he—ah. He’s carrying you, Captain.”
“Please tell me nobody kissed me,” Stark breathed out, and then Stark’s voice suddenly came over the comms, but the man lying next to him hadn’t moved.
“Guys, come on, you’re killing me here. What is it, 2012? God, I hate time travel. First, I'm fighting Thanos. Now, I have to deal with my past self and Thor's bad haircut? Oh my God, Cap, yes I hacked their comms, they’re my comms.”
Steve nearly opened his mouth to protest that he hadn’t said anything when he realized that this replica of Tony Stark wasn’t speaking to him.
***The tipping point by nightwalker (Domestic Fluff/7K)
Tony has a few quirks. Steve's still trying to figure them all out.
We two, how long we were fool’d by glassessay (Soulmate AU/9K)
Steve Rogers comes into the world as unblemished as his mother. When Anthony Stark is born, his soulmark is an obvious pattern of ink across his tiny chest.
It only takes a century, two names, and a shared love of Walt Whitman for them to find each other.
The tape in the cave by betheflame (Canon Divergent/5K)
Steve had no idea what was happening.
“You think I didn’t know that?”
Tony was staring Zemo down as though the Sokovian was actual vermin - which, Steve reflected, he kind of was.
“You think that I,” Tony continued, not hiding the sneer in his voice, “Anthony Stark, who has more powerful technology in my literal fingers than most nations have, that I wouldn’t know everything possible about how my parents died? That I wouldn’t know it wasn’t an accident, that your silly little HYDRA Nazi knock-off pals are the ones who murdered them? Please, you are pathetic.”
Happy ending by Robin_tCJ (No-Powers AU/28K)
Steve is a mobile massage therapist, and Tony is a stressed billionaire. What could go wrong?
With a decent happiness by torigates (Teacher AU/16K)
Tony Stark is Iron Man. Steve Rogers isn't, and never was Captain America.
Or, the one where everything is the same except Steve is a kindergarten teacher.
Nothing left but scars by SailorChibi (MCU/6.7K) - Reread
Steve wakes up to the fact that no one ever compliments or even says thank you to Tony, and that he has fallen into the same trap of painting Tony with a specific paintbrush.
This is how he showers a very confused Tony with praise to make up for it.
Our hearts should remember and follow by frostfall (MCU/5K)
Steve hums. “I didn’t know you could play. Or sing. Don’t think I’ve heard anyone mention it before.”
Tony shrugs. “It’s one of the few things, skills, I don’t flaunt. Not something people are interested in, anyway. Not gonna sway any board members by playing fucking Für Elise for them. Sides’, there’s a high chance I wouldn’t even play. Well, maybe if you get me drunk enough and near an instrument. Then, I might reconsider.”
(After a dream leaves Tony rattled, he turns to the piano as a way to distract himself.)
Finally, you and me by pensversusswords (Multiverse/10K)
Because in every layer of time, in every conceivable dimension, he was always meant to love Steve.
By some miracle, Steve was meant to love him back.
***Full disclosure not required (but appreciated) by Potrix (Identity Porn/16k)
The one where Steve knows more than he lets on, Tony knows less than he pretends, Clint has a big mouth, Bucky is a little shit, and everyone learns why keeping secrets never ends well.
Almost never, anyway.
Heartlines by nanasekei (MCU/7.9K)
“Let me,” Tony repeats. He regrets it deeply, so much, he wants to stick the words back into his mouth again, and it must show, in the way his voice wavers. He feels exposed, all of a sudden, as if he’s asking something bigger than what he can actually say. Let me touch you, let me take care of you. “Just… Let me do it.”
i found a way to let you in, but i never really had a doubt (marriage series) by quidhitch (Marriage Series/16k)
Tony Stark doesn’t believe in marriage. It’s nobody’s fault. —Well, it’s Howard's fault, probably, but Tony doesn’t like to think about that for too long, finds that it dredges up all sorts of issues he’d rather keep buried under a mountain of strategically employed sarcasm, humorous self-deprecation, and the occasionally effective substance abuse.
***Hide your love away by sineala (Soulmate/33K) - Reread
Tony has suspected for a long time that the soulmark on his chest matches Steve's -- but he's never told Steve about it. And then it's too late to tell Steve anything at all ever again. In the wake of Steve's death, the Skrull invasion, and Norman Osborn's rise to power, the identity of his soulmate is just one of the many things Tony cuts out of his memory forever.
When Tony returns to consciousness, he's forced to deal with the aftermath of a war he no longer remembers fighting, not to mention a Steve Rogers who can barely stand to be in the same room with him. Surely the last thing Tony could ever need in his life is more amnesia. But that's what he gets. And Tony's new missing memory just might be the key to finding out the truth of his soulmark... as well as his chance to make things right once and for all.
Break the chain (can’t live in circles again) by orphan_account (FWB/19K)
There had been seven amazing weeks of dating Steve Rogers before Tony realised that they weren’t dating at all. And then it was a scramble to adjust to the situation as it had always been: being Steve’s friend-with-benefits.
And if Steve seemed a little confused and bewildered by the way Tony was acting, well. Tony was probably just misreading that, too.
Five times steve and tony (tried to) bail each other out of jail by Teyke (MCU/6k)
Twice before Civil War, twice after, and once during. For very loose definitions of both 'bail' and 'jail'.
Cracked hearts under iron ribs by XtaticPearl (Established Relationship/14k)
Rhodey is away for almost six months now and comes to meet Tony after the mission. He doesn't understand the domesticity of the whole Tower and unknowingly sets off a whole truck of insecurities which make Tony crawl back into being a Stark instead of just Tony. The team is not at all happy and Rhodey joins them in trying to figure out a way to help their resident genius feel better in his skin.
The single biggest problem with communication by BlossomsintheMist (616/108K)
In the wake of Steve's return from the dead and the end of Norman Osborn's reign of terror, the superhero community is recovering--Steve has taken on a new role and Tony is trying to put his life back together. Things are still awkward between them, but they're determined to put things to rights. But when a discussion about their feelings leads to further misunderstandings, they discover that might be more difficult than either of them realized. Set in the early Heroic Age after the end of Dark Reign, this is a get-together story about crossed wires--and second chances.
What are friends for? by bobertsmallismydad (MCU /2.8K)
In which Steve is targeted by a virus. Will the Avengers be able to save him in time?
Starving by festiveferret (Vampire AU/2K)
Steve woke up starving.
***Everybody wonders (What it would be like to love you) by SoldiersShield (MCU/3K)
“...Is that what this is about?” He asks slowly. Steve blanches.
“Oh my god. It is.” Tony has no right looking as giddy as he does. “Steven Grant Rogers, are you jealous?”
--
Or: Steve and Tony have been dancing around each other for a while now, and Steve's rather content with it. Attending a gala together just might change that.
Re(A)d all over by brandnewfashion, MusicalLuna (Drunk Flirting/3k)
Contrary to popular belief, Tony Stark can blush.
It just takes Steve getting drunk on some magical Asgardian mead for it to finally happen.
***The Do-over Proposal by nightwalker (Established Relationship/1.2k)
Steve wants to go on a journey, Tony doesn't think it's a good time, and Bucky needs to beat some sense into both these idiots.
A Winter’s Ball by alliejowrites (Victorian AU/3.8K)
Steve moves to London in search of a patron, so that he can finally devote himself to painting. He is not expecting everything he finds upon meeting Lord Stark. A fluffy little Victorian AU. One-shot.
What’s a fanfic by starksnack (AvAc/1K)
Kamala introduces Tony and Steve to the world of fanfiction. There is a surprising amount of content about them being gay.

Hey Sineala, how are you 💐 I have come across many Tony Stark blogs and many are focusing on Tonys self-loath. It is pretty clear he is suffering from self-criticism, I can’t help but wonder why? I read his wiki page and it seems like from a young age he tried filling the void with alcohol, women and risky sports but does it all stem from the fact he feels guilty of weapon manufacturing? Thank you!
Hey, anon! So this is one of those areas where 616 actually differs a lot from MCU, because the answer to your question is that weapons manufacturing is eventually a thing Tony feels a great deal of guilt about, but it's not the origin of his self-loathing -- or even his superhero identity -- because he hated himself long before he started manufacturing weapons, and he actually continued manufacturing weapons for quite a long time after becoming Iron Man.
(I don't know MCU well enough to speak to whether Tony hates himself there, but he definitely hates himself in 616. It just has very little to do with weapons manufacturing -- or at least, while he is certainly capable of regretting his days as a weapons designer, it's not the root of all his problems or his drive to become a superhero. He's a superhero because he wants to save people, independently of whether he also wants to make weapons that kill people. Yes, it eventually occurs to him that these are two conflicting desires.)
The character of Tony Stark was created in 1963, and that was a time when attitudes toward the military-industrial complex were generally more positive than they are now, and definitely more positive among comics readers than they later became. Basically, Tony was a defense contractor and nobody had a problem with that. He was exemplifying the American dream! He was the best and most wonderful boss that anyone could be! He was, essentially, a fantasy of ethical capitalism. He was the guy who had it all. (And of course he was also Extremely Tragic because of his secret hidden disability, yes, so he really didn't have it all like everyone thought he did, but only he knew that.)
But then, Real Life happened, and the Vietnam War kept happening, and it kept getting more and more unpopular, and the people who read Iron Man comics started to not enjoy the fact that Tony kept making weapons. So Marvel changed that. In the mid-70s, Marvel ran an Iron Man arc involving Tony meeting a woman named Roxanne Gilbert, a pacifist who convinces him to stop making weapons. He changes the company name from Stark Industries to Stark International to reflect his new commitment. Iron Man v1 #78, from 1975, is the key issue you want to read here; it mostly consists of Tony thinking back to some of the horrors he saw in Vietnam and resolving that he's going to be a better man now and dedicate himself to peace.
It’s very touching, actually.
Keep in mind that this is 1975, so this happens more than ten real-life years after Tony debuted as a character. It took him a while to stop making weapons, is what I'm saying. (And even after then, people still try to force him back in -- this is in fact what Nick Fury tries to do to him in Demon in a Bottle, which is one of the things that leads to Tony’s massive drinking binge.)
When we see Tony talk about his weapons-manufacturing days at the beginning of Extremis (Iron Man v4 #1), he says that he doesn't intend to die as a weapons designer:
That entire interview sequence is definitely worth reading -- or even watching, if you prefer, since they made the Extremis arc into an animated cartoon -- if you want to see a modern take on Tony's approximately-current feelings about his weapon-designing days. Basically: he regrets a lot of things.
In fact, we know that one of the worst things that can happen to Tony these days is when people take his technology and use it as a weapon. And we know that because, well, that was the point of Armor Wars. Justin Hammer stole his tech and sold it to villains, and that's what started the whole catastrophe rolling there. And Tony, as you can see, is more than willing to beat himself up about it, here in Iron Man v1 #225:
And much later on, in The Five Nightmares, it is, literally, Tony's nightmare coming true when Zeke Stane uses Tony's repulsor technology to hurt people, as we see in Invincible Iron Man vol 1 #1:
(For MCU fans, I should point out that Zeke Stane is Obadiah's son looking for revenge, but also that, though 616 Obadiah Stane was very possibly the worst villain Tony ever faced, he is absolutely not the same as MCU Obadiah Stane and has very little in common with him.)
So, yes, he hates that this all happened, and he blames himself -- but it's not why he hates himself. Because Tony was sad and miserable long, long before he was Iron Man.
If you ask me -- and, hey, you did ask me -- I personally would be inclined to blame Tony’s self-loathing on the fact that Howard Stark was a horrible parent and was both emotionally and physically abusive toward Tony, and also was pretty much explicitly responsible for his alcoholism. Howard's shitty parenting continues to haunt Tony to this day. Sometimes literally.
(Incidentally, if anyone has a source for this one, could you tell me? I've been looking for it for years.)
So the Greatest Hits of Howard Stark, setting aside the part where he tried to sell Tony to Dracula (setting it aside because Tony is too young to remember that himself, and, yes, I swear this is canon), include such winning moments as That Time He Got Really Angry At Dinner And Was Clearly About To Get Violent, in Iron Man v1 #285:
(There is an issue somewhere in Fraction's run where a flashback shows him grabbing Tony's arms and Tony telling him he's hurting him, but I always misplace that panel, alas.)
Iron Man v1 #286 gives us the famous "Stark men are made of iron:"
In Iron Man v1 #287, we find out that Howard sent Tony to boarding school to toughen him up, because he was "sensitive" and "a coward;" you can see that Tony frames this as being "a disappointment" to his father:
And then there's Iron Man v1 #313, in which Tony recounts how he first started drinking as a child in an attempt to impress his father:
Yeah. So. I could go on, but you get the idea. Howard Stark really, really fucked Tony up. I mean, maybe Tony would have ended up hating himself anyway even if he'd been raised by a father who actually loved him and didn't do... anything like that. We can't know. But looking at the childhood he did get, this seems like a great way to raise a kid and ensure that they have massive, massive problems with ever feeling good enough, or loved enough, or, well, a whole lot of things.
So I think that's where all the self-loathing really comes from. It's not that Tony doesn't feel bad about having been a weapons manufacturer, or finding himself in a situation where things he invented are used for harm -- because he definitely does -- but that's not why he hates himself, deep down.

The Shitstorm That Is TS:IM and IM2020: The Tony Critique
Part 1 / 4!
Because this sucks, and we need to acknowledge that this sucks.
2 3 4
First of all, a nod to the stunning art that these issues feature. I’m sorry, artists, that you had to work with plotlines so damning. Now that that’s over with, let’s start from the first issue of Tony Stark: Iron Man.
The first thing you’ll probably notice is the result of 616 canon being negatively affected by the characterization of the MCU. Now, the MCU is an entirely different universe. Tony Stark acts differently here because, well... MCU Tony Stark is a different person than 616 Tony Stark. Ultimates Tony Stark is also a different person than 616 Tony Stark. Iron Man Noir is also-- You get the point. These Tonys act differently because they have different natures branching off of the same core. They have different experiences. They have different environments and resources.
So, to understand why it’s totally mega-fucked for 616 Tony’s personality to undergo such a dramatic change, you have to understand what 616 Tony originally was and how he acted.
I have a lot to say about 616 Tony, but we don’t have time for that, so here’s a breakdown from @sineala that does an excellent job of giving you the rundown. In essence, 616 Tony is mellow. He’s calmer. He’s charismatic, but in an adult scholarly way. He’s what you’d picture if someone said “respectable businessman” out loud. The closest to 616 Tony the MCU has ever gotten is mid-CW, where Tony’s somber with undertones of guilt and exhaustion. This is him.
616 Tony also has a lot of respect for people. There’s always the odd comic that characterizes him as bigoted in some way, shape, or form, but he consistently puts minorities in positions of power, and for literal decades has appreciated and funded certain charities and organizations that aim to do the same thing. Tony treats people with respect even after they’ve severely wronged him.
So, when the first issue makes our low-key, melancholy Tony Stark who treats people with a professional baseline of respect say wacky shit like this:
We get kind of frustrated.
Not to mention the fact that Tony’s past has also been adjusted to fit the desires of the writers, who seem to have forgotten that Tony was canonically a quiet and sensitive kid (hence why Howard wanted him to “man up” so hard).
"Quiet and sensitive.”
Anyway, here’s further evidence that this run is MCU-ifying Tony Stark in order to make him more friendly to the MCU-to-Comic demographics:
Sitting down onstage to talk to the press is such a Tony thing to do, right?
Well, sure, if you watched Iron Man 1 (and even then, that was one speech! Just one!) If you read any comic featuring Tony at his 616-est, however, you’d figure out pretty quickly that this man likes a podium. His tone is professional, as opposed to conversational. He doesn’t center his whole personality around the fact that he’s an authority figure, but he also doesn’t go out of his way to make himself seem like he’s not. He’s in a position of power. He knows it.
For reference, here’s what “knowing it” looks like. Obviously, this is a more formal occasion than a regular ol’ press conference would be, but... you get the point. This is pretty much his vibe.
And then there’s this bullshit, which is obviously a nod to the MCU in the most shocking and upsetting of ways. Note the trademark pose, the “We are Iron Man,” most likely pointing to both the “I am Iron Man” bit that the MCU had (which 616 Tony didn’t do the second the superhero was popularized, because he was spending all of his time living his life identity-porn style), and maybe the “We are Groot” bit from GOTG.
The thing is, this “We are Iron Man!” mentality fits... no Tony. MCU Tony sees Iron Man as a part of himself. 616 Tony often refers to Iron Man as a separate entity (not concept, but entity) from himself, better and more desirable than him, when he’s having his shittiest days.
And then there’s shit like this, which is objectively shitty. But because Tony’s funky new playboy attitude is comedic and all, he’s going to ignore the fact that Rhodey’s having a post-traumatic episode just piloting the suit (which he’s doing because Tony asked him to, when he could have asked... I don’t know, anyone else?) in favor of being a dick to him.
“You’re all over the place,” says the character who’s canonically diagnosed with MDD and experiences severe PTSD of his own to the other character who has severe PTSD and is being hardcore triggered by something he’s previously referred to as a metal coffin or casket or something.
That’s not even beginning to mention the fact that he’s calling Sunset Bain, a canonically manipulative and shitty ex (who, fun fact, was 5 years older than “undergrad Tony Stark” at MIT, and convinced Tony to keep her a secret from Howard and Maria) “the pretty-but-evil lady.”
So... she’s abusive, but at least she’s hot! And Tony still feels this way about her despite the fact that she, uh... stole some of his ideas, split up with him soon after, and then founded her entire company off of these ideas.
Very cool, Marvel. Thanks for that.
And hey, remember Tony’s fucking awesome quote from Avengers Vol 4?
“I can create a world without war. I can make a world without alcohol or drugs. Without hate or jealousy. But then it wouldn't be the world we live in. Nothing would be learned, nothing would be gained. We wouldn't advance as species.”
Well, here’s a fun fact. He doesn’t give a shit about any of that anymore, because fuck depth, right? Now he wants to ctrl+alt+delete the shit that makes him sad. And obviously, obviously alcoholism is something that’s understandably hated. Of course he’d want to get rid of it ASAP. But this is a guy who practically lives in guilt, a guy who thinks he deserves all the shit he gets and only ever crawls out of it for the sake of his loved ones.
That’s not this Tony.
And then there’s this. Honestly, I have no words for this. If it were some joke intended for an audience around him, then sure, it could work. It’s not like Tony never makes these kinds of jokes.
But this is just him. Him and a recording of himself in a room. Him, saying “I love the sound of my own voice” to himself despite the fact that we have decades of 616 canon proving the opposite.
There are many, many other issues with these issues (pun intended, but please read it with a cynical, if not completely hostile, tone) and how Tony acts within them, but I’m going to go more in-depth with those in some separate posts.
Because this is Hell. For my sins, I’ve become a torturer. For yours, you have to be subjected to even more of TS:IM than anyone should be exposed to.

Tony loves Steve, no matter what
———————————–
Of You, Me, and Us by ShippersList for starkboi (MCU, 1.1k words)
They are just photos. Snaps of his life, something he started taking after the Battle of New York. Nothing fancy, nothing staged, just… quick slices of life he wanted to document, to remember things by, to help getting some flavor to the sharp memories embedded in his mind.
Some are blurry, some are ruined by time (or, more often, coffee stains), some are just of the same subject; from the time when he wanted to document the way the vines grow on that one, particular corner of the park.
Others might say most of them are worthless, but they aren’t. Not to Steve.
And some pictures mean more than the rest. Especially to Steve.
———————————–
Worth the Wait by FreyaS for Royal_Chandler (MCU, 13k words)
When Steve woke up in the future, he met his soulmate and learned he’d lost everything else.

And when he opened his eyes, they were as clear as the sky, and twice as beautiful. And he could not have been bigger than a thumb, from the tips of his golden hair to the bottom of his perfect feet, and Sarah loved him more than anything else in the world.

———————————–
Superfamily [Art] by Hayluhalo for Squishy_TRex (MCU AU, art)
Prompt fill for “adopting kids” for the Stony Loves Steve 2019 event!
———————————–
Heart’s Second Chance [Art] by fictionforlife for BuckytheDucky (MCU AU, art)
Based on one of BuckytheDucky’s prompts:
Steve is the rightful heir to a decent-sized kingdom, neighbouring the Stark realm. When talks arise of the kingdoms going to war, Steve’s mother tells him he must marry Prince Tony in order to prevent the war from coming to fruition; both grudgingly agree, and it’s definitely not love at first sight, fighting behind closed doors all the time even tho they pretend they’re deliriously in love in front of others. Then tragedy strikes, and Steve has to decide whether to help Tony get revenge for his kingdom against Obadiah Stane, the Starks’ most trusted advisor, or convince Tony that he’s no longer allowed to get involved in his old kingdom’s affairs. Through it all, he starts learning more about who Tony really is and maybe even falling in love.
———————————–
Three Challenges by Neverever for Katie_Kat (MCU AU, 6,6k words)
King Steve is offered a marriage alliance with the mysterious Prince Tony which will help his small country greatly. Except that there is a twist. There always is.
———————————–
Be My Sunshine, My Only Sunshine by Nixie_DeAngel for Neverever (MCU AU, 1,8k words)
Letting out an overly tired, but still fond, sigh, Steve closes his charms tome and caps his inkwell before pushing it back towards the center of the table and places his quill next to it. “Okay, Tony, you have exactly twenty minutes before I really do need to get back to studying. Why do you need me to be your pretend boyfriend?”
Or, even as wizards Tony and Steve still can only find there way to each other through the muggle trope of fake dating while fighting their real feelings.
———————————–
a date with disaster (or, the time steve essentially whored himself out on national tv to pay his rent) by quellthefire for Serinah (MCU AU, 3,6k words)
Steve’s been having a hard time finding freelance work, so Bucky signs him up for a reality dating show to earn some extra cash. Little does Steve know that this is going to be the worst date he could possibly imagine, on purpose.
———————————–
To have and to hold by daisybelle for LegendsofSnark (MCU, 1.4k words)

———————————–
You’re Always Worth It by Nixie_DeAngel for Hayluhalo (EMH, 1.6k words)
Tony sees it in the way Steve’s shoulders grow tenser, the way his answers become shorter and snappier. Sees it in the way his eyes grow colder and harder. He sees it in the extra hours put in to training and working out, the way Steve goes through combat bots and reinforced punching bags.
Or, Tony takes Steve on a mini vacation and helps his partner unwind.
———————————–
when you’re gone by talktothesky for ishipallthings (MCU, 25.6k words)
Steve’s had to get used to many things in the 21st century but falling in love with Tony Stark might be the weirdest one yet.
Especially because the man’s dead.
———————————–
The shadow of men by Bill_Longbow for silversoul_snow (MCU AU, 6.8k words)
When Steve sinks his teeth into bringing Tony Stark to justice he shouldn’t be surprised the mob boss takes a mutual interest. He ìs suprised the mobster does this by kidnapping him, but the most confusing thing is that Steve doesn’t really mind…
In a world where soulmates are only rumours and myths, what chance do a cop and a crook have together?
———————————–
time doesn’t love you anymore (like i love you) by armoredsoftie for jayjayverse (MCU, 3.1k words)
Steve returned the Stones to their respective places, and it’s time to go back home. ———————————–
A Beautiful Thing by thegraytigress for FestiveFerret (MCU, 62.5k words)
Steve charges into a crashed alien ship to save survivors, and he comes out with a newfound power: telepathy. The fact that he can read minds isn’t all it’s cracked up to be, though. It’s pretty amusing to the team, really annoying to Steve, and generally not as cool as it sounds. It especially sucks that it’s driven a wedge between him and Tony, not that Steve can figure out why. Still, all in all, it’s something he can try to live with.
Until he can’t.
———————————–
Stuck by Neverever for PjCole (MCU AU, 2.9k words)

His chest constricted, then swelled.

Does the sun shine (during lock down)? by HogwartstoAlexandria for Nixie_DeAngel (MCU, 9.6k words)
The last thing Tony expects when he wakes up that day is the very thing he finds in Pepper’s office, or rather, the very person.
Old flames do they ever really die down? Maybe not, but does Tony have the luxury to find out when he has to think about Peter’s well-being first and foremost?
Or when Pepper is worried, makes a decision, and Tony’s life spins on its axis, once again.
———————————–
[art fill] on read by Priestly for KingOfBiohazards (MCU, Art)
Texting Tony Stark is sometimes easier than talking to him face to face. Mini-comic!
———————————–
good old-fashioned lover boy by nanasekei for Cachette (MCU, 7k words)
Tony is thrilled about his new relationship with Steve. He’s on cloud nine, in fact. It’s so amazing he can believe it’s real. He just wishes they could… Uh. Touch a little. Just a little
———————————–
Here’s Looking at You by mariana_oconnor for SpanglesandSass (MCU, 12.6k words)
Captain America’s disapproving stare watched over most of Tony’s childhood. It only makes sense that when Steve Rogers walks into Tony’s life, that he return the favour and stare right back. But what he sees when Steve doesn’t know he’s watching doesn’t match up with what he thinks he knows, and he comes to realise that maybe the man under the cowl isn’t quite as untouchable as he thought.

Write and Draw by SpellWolf for Shamen610 (MCU, 2.7k words)
games night and plotting ends with two idiots finally getting together
———————————–
Loose Ends by muchmoremajestic for riodesal (MCU, 8.9k words)
Steve Rogers was found in late 2007 after being on ice for over sixty years. In trying to find closure with his past, a few months later he comes across Tony - at the moment a charismatic billionaire responsible for the world’s most lucrative weapons manufacturing company while the country is at war fighting terrorist cells in Afghanistan. When Steve reaches out to Tony to get closure on his friendship with Tony’s father Howard, how will Tony react? Can Steve find the closure that he’s looking for?
———————————–
running into the sun by kiden for ohmyloki (MCU, 8.2k words)
There are other people Steve could ask. Sam or Nat. Even Clint would make more sense. It’s not that they aren’t friends - they are, they’re good friends, hard won, fought for, worked on - it’s just weird. They can live together and fight together, but Tony’s not so sure a few weeks with just the two of them in a car is a good idea. It’s definitely not a smart idea. “Can you repeat that, please?” or: tony and steve go on a nice, soft road trip that brings them closer together.
———————————–
Vienna Waits For You by Evanna_Adams for quellthefire (MCU, 13.4k words)
Steve Rogers was desperate. Not in the general sense of the word but the deadline for his college art project seemed to be looming and damnit, he should have been done already. But it had taken a bit of Barton and Wilson madness to leave his final project in pieces. Natasha, Bucky and the guilt-ridden duo had tried to help him, but the project was lost to him. They had even tried to offer their own college acquired expertise to help. Of course, he had to refuse.

“Or, maybe you just need practice?” Steve blinks at Tony’s question, confused. Maybe Tony needs more sleep than he thought. He’ll have to check with JARVIS.
“Practice - at dating?”

One Throw of the Dice by Wikketkrikket for dirigibleplumbing (616/Ults/3490/1872, 5.7k words)
Steve shrugged, pulling on his shirt. ‘It’s not like it’s Jane or no-one. Everyone gets more than one throw of the dice, Tony.’
He only realised his mistake when Tony didn’t say anything, turning away too quickly when Steve turned to look at him. It didn’t take too much thought to connect the dots. Tony did think you only got one throw of the dice. Tony thought he, Steve, was that one. The One.

Hands Out In The Dark by XtaticPearl for ashes0909 (MCU, 44.4k words)
When Thanos died the first time, it was anybody’s guess that the end of the journey had been reached. The years after that, well that was a story he hadn’t considered until life gave him the chance to try. What he ended up writing, whom he wrote it with, and why it all ended on a bench in New York - there were stories even a Time Stone hadn’t expected.

Dare I Say Forever by royal_chandler for herioneaddict (MCU, 4.2k words)
Naive and young, Steve had thought about it. He’d allowed himself to dream of post-war, matching gold bands and a white picket fence penning in a rambunctious pair of children.
However, there’s no such thing as post-war.
