some thoughts on netflix's adaptation of atla:

kiawentiio was done dirty cause she has so much of katara's bite and sass in her interviews

u can really tell the writing is the series' weakest point because the actors have what it takes to bring those characters to life but they'll only be able to do so much with the script and direction they're given

the wigs are SO ugly. yue had it the worst imo. she deserved better

You know something? I've noticed that Aang has a very idealized image of Katara, but I never really considered how Katara views Aang. In the intro, she talks about how she believes that Aang can save the world. Okay. Not a bad thing. But I know many have noticed how Katara mothers him as have I, and I wonder if reason Katara does is because he is the Avatar.

I'm not saying that she doesn't see him as just regular old Aang. But there are times where she stands up for him without considering anyone else's opinion. In The Storm when the shopkeeper says that the Avatar abandoned them for one hundred years, Katara says, "Don't yell at him! Aang would never turn his back on anyone. Aang is the bravest person I know. He's done nothing but help people and save lives since I met him. You're a horrible old man!". First, she scolds the shopkeeper and then defends Aang without hesitation.

In the Deserter, when Aang burns Katara because he doesn't listen, she ends up comforting him. In the Avatar State, when Fong is trying to tell Aang about him being in the state will help them end the war which is continuing to kill and harm many citizens, Katara stands up to him and tells him that Aang is pursuing his destiny is way. Another instance of Katara not listening to older people who have also seen the atrocities of war and have been affected by it because they were being too harsh on Aang. And we all remember how Katara sounded like a mother in a Parent-Teacher conference with Toph in Bitter Work because Toph was being too hard on Aang. Aang who needed to learn Earthbending to defeat Ozai before Sozin's Comet. Roku literally tells Aang this in book one.

My thing is, Katara has a lot of faith in Aang and is very motherly towards him. To the point where I feel like their relationship would be unbalanced. Don't get me started on how the show frames Katara looking at Aang when Zuko says he's the real hero. Katara puts Aang on a pedestal like how Aang does to her. The difference is that because Katara idealizes him as the Avatar, she is defensive to anyone that is against him or too harsh on him. She cares more about his feelings and emotions, putting hers on the backburner, because he's more important to not only her, but the entire world. The same episode where she gets burned BECAUSE of Aang, she's the one comforting him and making sure he's alright. I just don't see how their relationship would last considering what ATLA shows. Yes, I know that in LOK, they get married and have kids, but that's because the writers decided it should be that way, not because it made sense with what was shown.

starting with a vocaloid song of course we are lmao. there’s actually 2 ways you can read this song (that i’ve seen, though more than that exist im sure) — the first is more akin to the actual intent of the song which is talking more about and alluding to yandere undertones of obsessive love even if it doesn’t seem Real. the second and the one that i associate with dearest narcissus spokes from paramour/prim & provocative is a more Literal reading of certain aspects of the song. she’s terrified to be alone, she wants people to love her and think that she’s important, she doesn’t want people to abandon her—but to others outside her it seems like an attention grab or fake etc etc. but she means it she’s genuine she just doesn’t know how else to ask for love because no one’s ever really given it to her.

(she’s also arospec if that means anything either)

i really ADORE ado’s vocals in this song because it really captures the RANGE of emotions that narci is feeling. pleading, sweet, enraged, manipulative, sincere—it’s everything all at once. a lot of this energy is definitely directed at myrtus (her ex husband) at first, but it is genuinely how she feels about the world. she feels discarded and abandoned by it (and has been a bit) and she doesn’t know what she’s doing Wrong to make people never give her the time of day or love her.

this entire cover is actually the beginning band sequence (after maverick quits the band) to my wip LuKEWARM ReJECTION — it represents the band’s best and most hard worked on song; maverick’s (the ex lead singer’s) magnum opus. it took them nearly a year to perfect it, and as di somberly thinks when they get up on stage for the battle of the bands with their new short notice fill in lead singer toph, there’s no way in fuck they’ll be able to pull this off. toph hadn’t even had time to practice. they get onstage, make their intros, and then they start off the chords for the song.

and toph just blows it out of the water.

his voice is better, stronger, more emotional, more star like than anything maverick has ever TOUCHED and as they roll through the whole set toph just knocks the pants off of everyone including the band! it should be a momentous moment but for di it’s so so SO bitter because he and maverick were dating and he not only left the band, he left di, and you just can’t get over that with the snap of your fingers.

but i LOOOOVE this song as an opening too bc toph deadass thinks these lyrics are so juvenile LMAO it’s the first fight he and di get into after the performance bc he disses the song and di still has emotions high so they start arguing. how dare you call my boyfriend my ex’s magnum opus garbage!!! and toph is all these lyrics were written by a washed up pop star wdym (which hits better for my imagination since the loveless version IS a cover lmao and for me personally, the lyrics aren’t hella compelling i moreso like the bridge for the singer bc his voice MAAAN it’s so good)

i got this song on a couple of playlists but most recently i was thinking about this song in the context of betwixt thumb and forefinger and it really makes me think of sjaak. like he really doesn’t ask for 99.9% of the shit he’s going through and his reactions are horrible but understandable. the background sound and the vibes and the emphasis on the i never wanted this for us is literally him @ biscella and you can’t convince me otherwise.

the other person i’m thinking about with this song is arden from red death & the oracle’s favor, our favorite scorned prince. but instead of like sjaak and it be him talking to someone else, this song for him is more like him talking to himself. he never wanted this responsibility placed on his shoulders and he plays the part but it’s so hard to on some days — how does he survive? he doesn’t know.

What is your favorite scene you’ve written so far? ok i know this is going to make this answer a long one but i've gotta include the intro scene to my zukka novel's fic 'in time's arrow' <333 i enjoyed imagining and writing it so much that it's actually one of the reasons why i'm choosing to blend this fic with my mortician/marine bio au <3333

Fiddling with the frayed strings on his raincoat, Sokka frowned as he peered into the water. Salmon-eels don’t usually stray this far out into the bay. They’re river fish, shoals of glistening silver better suited for the rocky streams back home. For one to hobble out into open water alone, misshapen and streaked the color of wood grain, meant it had to be sick. If it got caught in his dad’s net then it could infect the other fish, and Sokka couldn’t let something like that happen, not on his very first fishing trip. He watched it like a penguin-hawk; in one moment he was tracking the salmon-eel from one end of the boat to the other, in the next— The ocean swallowed him like it was welcoming him home. Later, after he was pulled out by frantic hands that soothed his shuddering chest and layered him in thick blankets, Sokka sat curled up in the warmth of his Gran-Gran’s arms. She rocked him, gentle like the bay before its waters grew greedy, and as she petted at his drying hair she hummed to him of many things. There are animals that can live both on land and in the water, she’d said, and she listed all the ones she knew. There are accounts of more fantastical things that dwelled far deeper, and she described them. Ordinary people have also journeyed into those waters, she murmured. In her stories, sometimes they were even transformed anew.
