Can I just say I really love how your female characters in ASOIAF fics are so not traditionally likeable? This fandom is not one that tends to be very welcoming to female characters with any flaws or prejudices, even if they're being way more than fair by the standards of Westeros. I enjoy that they all feel like real people with real flaws who aren't always nice or accepting or understanding.

Thank you so much! I think this is something I tend to get on my soapbox for, regarding the ASOIAF fandom (although this is true across many other communities as well) and its very different standards for male and female characters.  Honestly I struggle to name a female character in the canon series who does not have divided opinions about her or who is not regularly pitted against other women by fans. Margaery, maybe, with the exception that she is regularly sexualized beyond belief as a ‘master of seduction’ at the tender age of 16 as well as being every male Self-Insert’s destined love interest because she’s ‘assertive but not in a bitchy way’?  If I sound salty about any of this it’s because I am! I’ve said it before in the comments of my fics and I’ll say it again; the fandom has an incredibly hard time accepting any behavior from female characters in ASOIAF that is in the least bit ‘unlikable’ or flawed. In my opinion this is why many fans refuse to admit that it is indeed possible to like many different female characters at once, and instead pick one to stan while constantly sneering about the other women in the series. Somehow, no one has this problem with the men of ASOIAF. There are not Jaime Lannister and Jon Snow fan blogs at war with each other. There are not 1000 word essays about why Robb or Jon is the ‘better brother’ who ‘has suffered more’. Daemon Targaryen gets to be cool and badass despite his many, many misdeeds but the Targaryen women are regularly castigated and condemned for much milder behavior. The TV show has only added to this because from what I’ve seen it’s writing actively encourages women ripping each other apart and calling each other cunts and weaklings left and right, and the publication of Fire & Blood has not helped matters either, since it reads (to me) like weirdly sexualized and shock value ridden fanfic of the pre-history of the series. I got regular comments at the start of Haunt/Hunt that Nell was bitchy, and bitter, and unlikable, and I’ll reiterate: good. I’m willing to own up to many mistakes with the fic and by no means do I think it is perfect, ‘better than canon’, or that all the characters are completely well-rounded and multifaceted, but I am very, very proud of writing Nell. I think her character development doesn’t mean half as much if she starts out the story without any flaws, prejudices, or grudges. That is not to say that I have anything against nice, timid, mild-mannered, gentle, etc. female characters. Dana is a lot more likable and funny than Nell in terms of personality and I have genuinely enjoyed writing her just as much. Jory is kind, compassionate, and has a romantic streak. I just find it interesting to often write female characters who do not necessarily ‘make things easy for themselves’ in terms of their personalities and how they express themselves. Nell doesn’t suddenly become demure and docile over the course of the fic, she just learns the value of diplomacy and putting aside personal grievances for the interest of the common good.

On the other hand, Wendie cared by being there for the person. She only really cared for three people, Matthias, Luna and Zion. If she cared for someone, she would seek the person out if they’re down and listen to them, or maybe make them something they like to comfort/surprise them and be...very present for them. She would also remind the person of their appointments and things like that. She tended to express care through acts of service, quality time and probably touch.

It’s hard to figure out her ways of care because Wendie doesn't really care for people. She tended to adopt a self-absorbed point of view in relationships, wanting only to take and not really realizing that she had to give. It’s very hard to imagine Wendie being caring or giving, and I can’t imagine her showing interest in people. It’s because she isolates herself from people, so she has no experience with anything people-related at all. 

She is very emotionally and socially stunted (doesn’t know how to socialize or connect) because she never had a real relationship where she gave back. The only person she gave back to was Matthias (also Luna/Zion), because she loves him so she wants to take care of him. When she cares for someone, she wants to take care of them. With Matthias, this nurturing side of her was ‘activated’.

Wendie is very unhappy, and has been for a very long time. She is bitter about many things, making her guarded and isolating. If she lets her guard down, she would admit that she wants love. BUT if you look at her actions, she has not done anything to seek connection, people, companionship or love. In fact, she acts as if she wants to drive people away by being critical, hard to please, defensive, overly sensitive, harsh, and self-absorbed. 

It’s ironic that she pushes people away and then wonders why she’s lonely and feels bitter about not having love. Why? Let’s look at her general state of unhappiness. She comes off with enough baggage that an outsider would think she has suffered some great injustice in her past. But when me and @sakamotorei​ thought about it, we couldn’t really come up with anything. What happened was that she didn’t get along with her family so she left home and ran away, where she was alone for many years and grew even more unhappy. 

I started wondering if, sorry to say, her unhappiness is self-created... and this was confirmed by Rei, who said that she made up the injustice she suffered herself... Again, sorry to say, but she’s an edgelord. In her head, she dramatized her teenage unhappiness so that she became the victim of Heather, Emily, or whichever other person's unfair treatment of her, and the other people are villains. 

What actually happened was that she was hyper-sensitive because of self-esteem issues, which meant she lived in her head all the time, and took people’s less sensitive/gently worded expressions very personally as though they were trying to hurt her. She is convinced Heather, her mom (Heather loves her even if she's not the best at expressing affection), is out to get her. She dramatizes everything and has a victim mindset because she cannot see past or put into perspective her hurt feelings, so she unconsciously creates these scenarios to justify her feelings of hurt, because doing otherwise would mean acknowledging that her hurt feelings stem from her, that she has a problem she should fix.

She needs people to make her feel emotionally comfortable around them before she likes/is ok with them, because of her hypersensitivity. She unconsciously looks for some kind of positive emotional feedback/affirmation in people, and dismisses them or writes them off when she can't find any. This is why she likes Zion and quietshipping works. The power play between them meant she had power over him and she was comfortable. She is unfortunately high-maintenance... 

With Emily, Wendie criticized Emily for all her flaws (she was not wrong and these were things Emily needed to work on) but Emily at least tried to reach out in her own ways. Wendie, however, doesn’t even give anything, and only criticizes and criticizes. Wendie is basically bitchy for a big part of her life. She is like a bitchy ice queen and she treats everyone who doesn’t please her/match her standards with the ice wall, totally shutting them out. She's the kind who is involved in all sorts of drama... If she has an instagram, there would always be vagueblogging or emo posts.

She is still hypersensitive and cannot take in negative feedback, becoming very defensive and upset if anything is pointed out to her. She blames the whole world for the way she feels instead of trying to resolve her feelings. She has even less self-awareness than Nolan. She is totally out of touch with herself and lives in self-denial, where she tries her hardest to block things out. If she had to help or care for someone, she might just walk away. Nolan might grumble all the way, but he would still do it. If he walked away, he would come back (and grumble some more). 

Another problem is that Wendie is spoilt. She is used to receiving and getting her way. Nolan subconsciously picked that up, and always grumbles something like, ‘You’re the princess, whatever you say goes because you’re a girl and I’m a boy’. This is because Matthias spoils her, so she tends to get away with most things. Matthias has conservative/traditional ideas that boys should be manlier/tougher and girls should be pampered, so he would often tell Nolan to give in to his sister and let her have it. Heather always frowns upon Matthias spoiling Wendie. She always came down harder on Wendie because she didn’t want Wendie to be spoiled and she thought Wendie had a mean streak -- she honestly had great foresight in spotting these traits and wanting to prevent them.

Wendie seems to think that others’ treatment of her in terms of justice/injustice. Her mentality is: “Either you're with me or you're against me.” When she was a teen, she frequently felt that things weren’t fair to her. She feels that the world did her an injustice, Heather/Emily/whoever did her an injustice, she isn’t being treated the way she deserves.

My opinion is that Wendie’s biggest problems are that she’s spoiled, has a mean streak, and she is self-absorbed. If she was not spoiled, she would not be so reactive against negative feedback, she would be less self-absorbed. Wendie is also very extreme and can’t find a balance between her fluctuating/extreme feelings (spoiled/used to getting her way coz she acts on them instead of trying to listen to others). If she’s not self-absorbed, she won’t have a victim mindset and see everything to be about her, as an attack on her, and to blame others. If she doesn’t have a mean streak, she won’t be so quick to condemn/punish others. My opinion is also that she is perpetually looping and descends frequently into grips.
