Me debunking astrology generalizations and misconceptions or smth idk...

Squares and oppositions aren't pure evil. 

I can't believe I have to say this because I thought ya'll have learnt the characteristics of every aspect but here we are. Nothing in astrology is black and white. And I saw some ridiculous statements (not necessary here on tumblr) that said things like "if your Venus squares someone's ascendant then you don't find that person attractive AT ALL". Or "Mars square Mercury people can't speak politely and have an annoying voice". Like????? First of all, that's ridiculous. Second of all, square in not "everything bad" just like trine is not "everything amazing". Squares bring tension, which leads to motivation, they’re stimulating; sometimes excitement or charisma; sometimes they can make you overdo things. I'm not saying they're oh-so-marvelous because the challenges are still there, but they're not as bad as people paint them to be. Squares happen between two signs that are in the same modality so they have a bunch of things in common. Besides, some of them (Sagi-Pisces and Gemini-Virgo) are ruled by the same planet so there's a special type of chemistry between those (especially when applied to synastry). Oppositions work in two ways, planets either meet in the middle - opposite signs usually complete each other and fuel each other up. And worse case scenario? Natally this means being pulled in two different directions; synastry-wise, you can completely miss each other like two passing cars - so there may be some misunderstandings but I don't think that's the end of the world... And, as per usual, may be mitigated by other positive aspects.

This is me debunking other people's attempts at debunking Sun sign compatibility. 

Sun IS very important but when people ask about compatibility and go with Suns... and then someone tries to be a smartass and debunk the "compatible-incompatible" and does the same thing without even realizing it. Like, "oh I actually see a lot of Aries and Pisces having amazing relationships because *insert someting that is a total stretch and refers to their Sun sign traits*"... But you seem to forget that they're neighbouring signs... which means they probably have personal planets in those neighbouring signs... which means they're compatible not because of some made-up stuff that you're trying to come up with but because their other planets are compatible with each other. But you're still feeding into the Sun sign compatibility talk. (So like, what I'm trying to also say, yes, the entire synastry chart comes into play; Also, side note, everyone can get along on some level if they’re mature enough).

Planet in a sign is NOT the same as planet in the house. 

There may be some overlaps in some of the sign-houses associations (like in the overall energy; like for example, it sort of makes sense that 3rd, 7th and 11th are referred to as “air houses” because they’re the most social) but in NO WAY there are similarities between planet house position and the "ruling" sign. That association started a few decades ago and some would say that NOT linking houses with signs is a purely traditional approach. But there’s plenty of professional modern astrologers with 20/30/40-year experience who still differentiate between sign/house position... because they know (and have learnt along the way) that there’s a huge difference.

I'll give you 3 quick examples: Gemini planets and 3rd house planets both may put emphasis on communication, mental stimulation and gathering data. But Geminis are often scattered in their approach, they may be easily distracted, may be indecisive, may be jack of all trades and talkative jokesters. They actually hate routines and dullness. "Spice it up" is probably a Gemini's philosophy. Now 3rd house planets may indicate you actually LIKE doing things on the regular - like running errands every other day in the mornings or going to that one specific coffee shop to pick up a snack. You may actually work in logistics or as a postman (especially if your chart ruler or MC ruler is in the 3rd). Planets in the 3rd talk about your siblings, neighbours or school experiences - like having Venus in the 3rd may point to positive experiences within those areas - something Gemini Venus has nothing in common.

Venus in the 9th can study at an art/beauty or fashion school (or even teach there if the MC is involved); can be very attached to spiritual and religious matters; can also find love in a foreign land. But imagine it being in Taurus - rather shy, needing those stable values to feel secure, being an exceptionally great student at that art school thanks to its domicile. Venus in Sagittarius on the other hand, likes adventure, things being shaken up from time to time, lightheartedness and exploration. But what if we flip the scenario and that Sag Venus is in the 2nd house. This can denote earing money through travelling and looking for ways to expand but in a financial matters.

Continuing with the Venus examples, having Venus in Aries is completely different than Venus in the 1st. What do people usually say about Venus in the 1st? That it makes the native charming, lovely, well-put together, with great manners, maybe beautiful, graceful, maybe a bit shallow. When in Aries? None of these characteristics fit, on top of that, it's in its detriment. Our poor gal Venus is uncomfortable and confused in Aries. She's like, "conquer? Swords? Selfishness? Obnoxiousness? Sparring? You're telling me to fight people? What am I doing here???" 

And I'll leave you here with that cause those examples weren’t that quick lol and in fact, I could give you a 100 of those. Besides, this actually inspired a 3-page rant that I've already posted not so long ago that you can read HERE.

There's no such thing as "more accurate" astrology. 

Both western and vedic are valid. Both can show you the same things. JUST KEEP THEM SEPARATE AND DON'T MIX THEM WITH EACH OTHER. And don't say things like "sidereal shows your soul" - omg I saw this statement soooo many times, who the hell even came up with this?! Actually, if anything, it's the modern western approach that "psychologized" (yea I just made up a word, you mad?) astrology while Jyotish still sticks to the very real "here and now", sometimes fatalistic predictions of how exactly your life is going to roll out... But hey, reach for hellenistic methods and they can tell you the same things, just with different tools. So no, they do not show different things, it's just their language is different.

If you say you don't identify with your chart then you're just reading it wrong.

This partially connects to the last one in some ways... Switching to a different astrology or different charts is not a solution. Learn how to read your natal. If you say it doesn’t describe you, I can guarantee you that you haven’t studied it properly. (Now this hasn't turned into a rant yet but I may actually do a whole-ass post on this because if I start elaborating on it now I'll end up with another 3-page essay).

Learn how and when to generalize. Also learn how to take generalizations. 

I understand that you have to pick up on every single thing separately in order to put everything together. It's like learning a new language: first you need to learn individual words and then you need to know the proper grammar to create a full sentence. This is 100% understandable and necessary, but it's important to take the entire thing into consideration. And this goes for all branches of astrology, but I guess it's especially annoying with synastry. This, again, comes down to the very black and white approach. You know, like when you see those long paragraphs where people elaborate on all the intricacies of Venus-Pluto aspects or whatever as if that one thing was determining the entire relationship between two people. (Side note, no shade but some of ya'll should start writing fiction or poetry cause the amount of fluffy speech and waffle that I see floating around here on tumblr is insane sometimes). Why are you wording everything as a make it or break it type of situation? And on the receiving end - learn how to take *properly phrased* generalizations constructively. Example: it IS a rule that Aries is a competitive one, maybe you're not one of them (for many reasons) but don't make a fuss about someone saying this. It IS a basic rule that energies of the same sign in two people are going to get along (well that depends on the planets involved but I digress), if that, for some other reasons, doesn't apply to you, don't go yelling that it's bullcrap because you hate people of the same sign. You know? Like, learn the difference.

DON'T SCARE PEOPLE WITH ASTROLOGY.

I had a mini-rant on this one a while ago, but I think this deserves a constant reminder (and refers to the last point), I don't want to see any more posts that would say things like "xxx house placements will bring you suffering" or "stay away from people with planets in your xxx house" or, even worse, making a (completely untrue btw) prediction based on one single thing like "someone with so-and-so aspect is going to harm you". And you're so casual about it??? You know there are sensitive people in the world. Learn some ethics. Learn some counseling skills. Don't be ignorant. Don't throw these random stuff at people just like that. And learn some actual astrology cause most of these aren't even closely describing that particual aspect. LIKE WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK.

Studying astrology and believing in free will doesn’t go well together.

It's not just psychological and spiritual. It's useful to know that western astrology made it like that because there were still people threatening astrologers for using it as a divination tool. So they moved away from the predictive/deterministic aspect of it. Now, I'm not here to change anyone's beliefs cause that's a very personal thing that everyone should develop on their own. But once you start diving deeper into astrology you'd notice that there's a heavy emphasis on fatedness and things being predetermined. That includes both the good and the bad stuff and you should learn to accept that. And with the bad things specifically, let's not excuse it with some "oh that was an opportunity for growth". Like yea, maybe, occasionally??? But just acknowledge that sometimes things happen not because there was a deeper meaning in them... but because you have a Pluto-Mars conjunction in the 6th that makes an applying square to your chart ruler and you were going through a profection year where Mars was your time lord and it transited that chart ruler while making a conjunction with Neptune so you were attacked by a baby crocodile while swimming and it bit off your toe and you got a nasty infection and that’s it (I just made that up btw, I don't actually know anyone who was attacted by a crocodile). So like, sometimes shit just happens and there's nothing psychological about it. Also, I bet your free will didn't want to be attacked by that croc.

Getting organised in 2021

Huh, me? No I mean you! You!

I'm sure many people are looking ahead to 2021, and, with the new year comes renewals of goals, habits, motivation and so forth. I'm not really about that, but I thought now would be an apt time to talk about what I've learnt over the past 2 years regarding project management and keeping motivated. 

Now, I want to preface this blog with my thoughts about the whole "productivity" thing. I make a huge, HUGE distinction between being productive at work and productive on your hobbies. The idea of productivity in the workplace can be used in a manipulative fashion, where one may work themselves to mental and physical exhaustion for the benefit of someone else. Considering most people reading this will probably be on a fixed wage (rather than commission-based), does it really make sense to push oneself harder without getting any immediate, tangible benefit from it?

So that’s my rant for the blog, I promise! Anyway, on the other hand we have productivity on your hobbies, which is a completely different matter. You get out exactly 100% of what you put into your hobby, and it'll benefit you in multiple ways. I don't think I need to sell this to you, as I'm sure most people, myself included, would love to be more productive on their own personal projects. In this blog, I'm going to be talking exclusively about this sort of productivity and how to improve it in a couple of different ways. Again, this is all stuff I've personally tried and tested, so while I am confident this approach will work for me, it may not necessarily work for you. But, you won't know until you try!! So if you're convinced and want to get motivated, read on!

I first want to talk about one's mindset, and then dive into the tools I use. The latter will provide a bit more context for the former, and in the end, the most powerful tool you have is your brain, so use it!

Training your brain

So, the biggest problem I find myself, and other people have, is how to tackle a project and starting a work session. One I start, I find it easy to get into the zone (and this comes back to the choice of tools that augment my workflow), so getting started and knowing what I'm doing is the main thing I have to tackle. 

On the broadest level, I work with a general plan that has been written up previously. This contains all the key points from start to finish, without worrying too much about the detail at this stage. There is some skill involved in identifying what constitutes a "key" point, but this all comes down to practice. For reference, if I estimate something will take a week or two to finish, that's a task. If something will take longer than that, it's more than likely several tasks, and rolling it up into one task will probably cause some decision paralysis. Anything smaller and your list will get too clogged up, and again, decision paralysis. Right, so that's your high level plan done. Cool, but not really going to help you on a day-to-day basis as this will be something to refer to between tasks.

Ok, so now you have a list of chronological tasks. Take the first one and start it. Oh, you don't know where to start? Don't worry, I'm with you. It's important to recognise the mental signs related to approaching a task. If I find myself hesitating or not looking forward to a particular task, it often means I haven't defined it well enough. That means breaking the task down into individual steps, until you're comfortable saying "yep, I can do this right now" with each dot point. Again, it'll take some practice (depending on your hobby) to visualise and write down each step, but it is definitely something that you get used to, and will save you so much time umming and aahing with your program of choice open, but not actually getting any work done. If you are finding that happens more often than not, it breaks your workflow and you can't get into the zone!

A few more general tips. It helps to be consistent with your work. Try to dedicate a regular time to your hobby and you'll find it a lot easier to get into the working mindset and the zone. Allow yourself some days off, but don't use the excuse of "not being motivated enough" as a reason to take time off. What would be better is, if you can't force yourself to, say, program, work on the art, or the sound, or design. But do it consistently! 

Be accountable as well. This means involving others as much as you can - as an example, say you want to discuss a design aspect with a friend and you'll find extra motivation to work on that aspect, and get it ready for someone else to read over. Just having that knowledge of another person looking at your work will bring it to a new level, trust me! You can also be held accountable to people you don't know! Part of the reason why I started this blog and my Twitter account was because I always have in the back of my mind while working, that it'll eventually make its way to my blog. 

Finally, if your hobby has one, make use of the community where possible - get involved and see if there are ready made templates or resources you can use. I know people like to do things without help, and I absolutely respect that, but I find that people have often gone through the same struggles as you, and will provide ways to make your life easier!

Tools of the trade

Ok so I've used a lot of different software and systems in my time, and by process of natural selection the ones that I still use today are the ones that have been most helpful for me! Here's a short list with both the specific thing I use, and in brackets, what I use it for. If you already use something similar that fill a similar role, then my suggestion is to stick with what you know:

ClickUp (Project management, checklists): This is where I keep a list of all my major tasks. You can have checklists nested in checklists which is amazing for planning, and can organise things into broad categories, and tons more. Any good project management software like Trello etc. should support this.

Google Drive (Cloud storage of other assets, easy sharing, MS office replacement): I use this to store anything that isn't code related, and to work on things simultaneously with other people. While this game is a mostly solo effort, I absolutely discuss and show a ton of stuff to my more experienced friends, who in turn provide very helpful feedback. It's much nicer and more organised than sending files through a messaging app or (heaven forbid) emails!

Bitbucket (Source control, cloud storage of code): If you code, you need this. I don't care how small your project is! Actually, smaller projects are better to learn from! Github is definitely used the most for source control, so if you like that more, use it!

Google Keep (Note taking, brain dumps): Ever had a genius idea right before bed? Same, and I use Google Keep to keep track of them. I could use Clickup in this instance but I find the app to be a bit clunky compared to Keep.

Notepad++ (Rapid notes, copypasting error messages): Notepad ++ is what I use mainly for copypasting error messages to look at later, but I also use it when I need to break down a sub-task down, or make a note to do something later without interrupting my flow. The fact that Notepad++ specificaly can have multiple tabs and will save your tabs automatically without you having to manually save it is amazing.

Good 'ol pen and paper (Scratchpad): For those REALLY hard problems that can't be solved in my head, I turn to pen and paper to get my thoughts organised. While I could use something like Notepad++, I find that being able to write and draw anywhere on the paper, and link things up with lines helps immensely to get a clear idea of things.

look not to vague here particularly bc my comment about You Know did straddle the line between criticising art and being mean about a person, fair play there, it was not a simple critique of art

but my biggest beef with Fine Art as an educational establishment is that I've yet to meet a Fine Artist who's been taught to separate artistic criticism (which can be very harsh and very negative) from a personal attack.

and as I say I'm not talking about You Know here, I understand how that felt personal bc it was about his public persons not just his work. but the idea that negative comments are inherently unkind or are a suppression of the Artistic Vision are pretty endemic to my experience of Fine Artists (whether at college/university or pros in their fifties setting up shows in spaces I've helped run).

like I tend to say the thing I got from my undergrad that I couldn't have got without studying art wasn't technique or theory (you can learn those from books) but the ability to give and take productive criticism.

and that includes criticism that isn't meant as concrit tbh, like, my tutor used to say 'clients don't know shit about art but if they say something looks like a dick you need to be able to either take the dick out or make sure there's a good reason for the dick to be there.' like art is made to be seen so anybody who sees it and tells you what they're seeing in it is giving you useful information even if they're also being a cunt. this is especially true for commercial work/work to brief but like. all art you put out the world rather than keeping as a personal/practise work is a communicative medium so what is communicating Matters.

you won't always have to change it but you do have to accept that some people won't like it and some people won't like it for reasons that didn't occur to you. so taking critique effectively is about listening to what the other person is saying and deciding whether or not you think their point is valid, significant and useful. and sometimes it isn't! like I've suggested some changes to people's works in progress and been really glad they ignored me when I saw how they finished it! and sometimes we are just gonna disagree! if you put a political message in your work and I say 'i think that message sucks' that doesn't mean you're WRONG or your art needs changing it may just mean. we disagree. but art is a conversation and for a conversation to work people are gonna have opinions about it.

and btw there's a skill to giving good critique too and it means getting beyond 'i like' or 'i don't like' and trying to work out what specifically you're reacting to and why. like 'the anatomy is dodgy' is less helpful than 'the hand looks weird' is less helpful than 'the hand looks stiff and awkwardly posed' is less helpful than 'what if you moved this finger to here?'. Saying 'i hate this' is less useful than 'this colour scheme makes me nauseous' is less useful than 'i think the juxtaposition of these two colours is gross, is that intentional? if not it might be nicer with a warmer yellow'. and always giving space for the artist to consider and explain why they made intentional choices.

critique is not about instruction but about questioning. but like. also if you have to give a ten minute explanation of why you made a choice then the art probably isn't effectively communicating for itself and that's useful information in itself. like 'I'm not sure what you're trying to say' or 'this seems kind of on the nose is there something more you're trying to get across' are Very Useful Criticisms to develop your work

but a lot of people get very defensive and like not to be a dick but while there's a few in every group, every single time I've had a joint crit with fine artists they have just been dreadful at taking crits. like it's always the fine artists who get upset at you questioning their vision and burst into tears or storm out or say "why are you all picking on me" when like. the crit they're getting is way lighter than in illustration or graphic design groups.

and like. this makes me sad. because I think when it comes to art teaching, group and individual crits are like 90% of the most valuable learning. like I didn't get a lot out of my art education because I had The World's Most Amazing Artists as teachers! (some of them have been really good though) I got a lot out of my art education because group crits helped shape my work, make specific changes, and learn from 30 other minds who saw my work from different angles. and if that basic skill, to criticise and be criticised, isn't being developed in five art courses then those students are missing a vital skill to keep improving and developing their work and communicating their ideas clearly and strongly.

also uhhhhhh if they haven't learnt to take criticism from other artists in a safe managed environment like a studio or classroom then they are really gonna Struggle if they get any notoriety because the majority of people who look at art aren't thinking about how to improve it, they're criticising from the perspective of a finished work, and that's still useful critique but it's much less likely to be couched in compliments or to come with specific suggestions for improvement. and with commercial art clients they often know nothing about process or theory they just know if they Like It or Don't Like It. so it helps to have practise in interpolating vague or general criticism into actionable changes and subjective opinions, and to have had space to develop some resilience. you know. it DOES hurt when people criticise your work, particularly if it's very personal, and it takes work and practise to get past that kneejerk defensive reaction and to step back from it a bit. but somebody saying "I don't like this art" or "this art is shallow/obvious/meaningless/ugly/unpleasant" isn't a personal attack. it feels like one bc you know how much thought and effort and work and how much of yourself goes into every piece. but art is a conversation and a negative response is part of that conversation. and if your work reaches a wide enough audience someone ain't gonna like it and uhhhh. a lot of fine artists don't seem to be able to cope with that concept.

(mind you if somebody says "this art is ugly and meaningless because it was made by an ugly meaningless stupid person" then yeah that's about you and they're being a dick (but also. it is about you and it isn't about you, it's about the single facet of you that they see from your art, and they do not know you and aren't speaking to your actual worth even if they think they are). but even there like. block it out and move on bc throwing a tantrum at them, however justified, only makes things worse. their opinion is not of you the entire human person but of you the reflection they're seeing in their interpretation of the art. it's not your problem.)

like it's not that you don't get to be upset when people talk shit about your art or recieve it in a way you don't like. of course you do. but it's also uhhhhh an inevitable consequence of putting art out into the world. by putting it out publicly you are inviting 'what do you think about this' and you can't be surprised when people tell you. it's not bullying to Not Like Your Artwork. it's kind of aggro to seek somebody out to tell them you don't like their art and all the things they should change about it (and that's got pretty endemic with the internet and accessibility of artists) but it's on you if you go looking for reviews or critiques or responses to your work and then can't cope with the fact that they're not unilaterally positive and not everyone is picking up what you're putting down.

Where do you see Higuchi's arc heading? Do you think she will get more focus?

After you sent this ask to me you wrote this meta on her yourself and I agree with many points you make!

I will now try to add something more.

Higuchi has gained focus in two different chapters which are An Occupation that does not suit Her and Addict. Both chapters focus on her relationship with Akutagawa and this fits with the idea that Higuchi is in the story to help him:

Higuchi’s objective is pretty clear and it is to help Akutagawa. However, it is not clear how this will happen plot-wise since there are many possibilities. At the same time, the objective of “helping her senpai” is an external one which is linked to the internal objective to become Akutagawa’s equal and to possibly start a relationship with him.

So, how can this happen? As stated above it is impossible to say for sure until their relationship gains more focus, but we can make some general considerations.

Akutagawa, like Higuchi, has a clear external objective (being recognized by Dazai) which is linked to an internal one (being worth of life). However, it is pretty clear that his arc is a case of what you want is different from what you need. In other words the external objective does not overlap with the internal one even if the character thinks so.

Atsushi has started showing Akutagawa this:

Akutagawa wants to be recognized by Dazai and thinks that the right way to do so is to become strong. However, this is not the case, like Atsushi tells him, because a person’s worth does not lie in physical strength. That said, I think that an ulterior step needs to be done here and it is that Akutagawa does not need to be recognized by Dazai at all. Akutagawa’s worth as a human being is not given to him by another person and he needs to understand it.

Let’s consider this:

Dazai compares Akutagawa to a former stray dog and in this metaphor Dazai himself is the master who picked him up. The idea that a person can gain value once they are picked up by another individual or an organization is one shared by many other characters, but I think that it is ultimately wrong. This does not mean that the relationships one builds are not important, but that thinking that these relationships (both healthy and unhealthy) can solve all one’s problems is wrong.

In the end it is as Dazai says here:

People are stray dogs and they can’t change it, but this is also why they can choose for themselves how to live and why they have possibilities. In other words the stray dogs of the title (imo) are not just people who are excluded or dismissed by society (even if it is clearly a theme), but humans in general and their struggling is what living means.

In other words, Akutagawa should realize sooner or later that the objective he has chosen to pursue is not what can help him, but that other things are. I would not be surprised if Higuchi will be one of these “other things”.

This is because their relationship too is subjected to the hierarchy the mafia imposes like the one between Dazai and Akutagawa was, but the chapter An Occupation that does not suit Her makes clear that Higuchi, despite her using codes linked to the mafia like “job” or “superior”, is actually aware of the fact that what she wants is not connected to the organization:

She wants to be close to Akutagawa and him to be safe. However, she is still not able to express it in a way which does not call back to their jobs:

In other words, Higuchi, differently from Akutagawa seems to know what she wants, but she does not know how to obtain it. In other words, she uses the wrong method because she keeps trying to grow close to Akutagawa while staying in the boundaries of their working relationship.

The chapter Addict shows more of it:

All in all, Higuchi can only attempt to grow closer to Akutagawa in a roundabout way and instead of being honest with her feelings and to admit that she is jealous she keeps finding excuses linked to her job.

What is more, this chapter is interesting also because of another thing aka that it presents Katai and Higuchi as foils.

Both are in love with a person and start investigating the “yamato nadeshiko” because of this. However, it is clear that none of them truly knows the object of their love.

Katai has only seen Gin from afar and knows nothing of her to the point that he fell for her despite his hate for criminals:

Higuchi obviously knows Akutagawa a little more, but her knowledge is limited to his work life. It is made clear that Higuchi knows very little about her superior’s personal life to the point that she ignored his relationship with both Dazai and Gin and up until the Guild arc he did not even know that Gin is a girl.

It is obvious that if Higuchi really wants to build a deep bond with Akutagawa she has to communicate and to get to know him better. This is also what the title of the chapter suggests. All in all, Katai’s crush for Gin is called an addiction and it mirrors Higuchi’s one for Akutagawa. This doesn’t mean that both relationships have no chance to develop into something important and deep (being it romantic or platonic), but the characters have to put effort into it and must at least know more of the people they are interested in.

The current arc seems to offer Higuchi the perfect chance to use what she learnt about Akutagawa in Addict to help her superior. As a matter of fact Gin was wounded and it is possible that Akutagawa will be in distress over it. Higuchi might help him out and grow closer to him as a result.

This is where I see Higuchi going. She could do so in different ways, but in the end I think she will face Akutagawa as an equal and help him find worth in himself since she clearly values him as a person, while the mafia does not:

Apart from that, I think we might have something more in store for Higuchi when it comes to her past and her ability.

The wiki says that the author confirmed that Higuchi has an ability even if she has still to reveal it. This is interesting because Higuchi has been among the first characters to have been introduced, so it is possible that the reveal of her ability has been postponed for a reason which might be linked to a specific plot point or to Higuchi’s past.

This is also something we know nothing about. In chapter 14 many characters say that Higuchi is not suited for the mafia:

But then why is she in the mafia in the first place? What is more, why is she Akutagawa’s direct subordinate and Black Lizard’s superior?

Let’s highlight that both Mori and Black Lizard compare Higuchi to Akutagawa as if her position is something she has obtained only thanks of him. However, there must be a reason for this since even Gin who is Akutagawa’s sister and a skilled assassin is Higuchi’s subordinate. In other words, Higuchi’s current position in the mafia is strange and there might be a reason for it. It is also possible that this reason has to do with her ability, with Akutagawa or with both. After all, Akutagawa himself was selected by Dazai because the latter saw potential in the former’s apparently useless ability, so I would not be surprised if Higuchi’s story had some similarities to Akutagawa’s. After all, as you yourself have explained in your meta Akutagawa treats Higuchi in a similar way to how Dazai treated him.

5e Kayn the Shadow Reaper build (League of Legends)

Hey remember when I said I wouldn’t just make League of Legends builds? Well getting back into LoL I rediscovered my love for Kayn the Shadow Reaper. Kayn’s an edgy little anime boy who doesn’t wear a shirt and he has daddy issues as well as a scythe daddy who sasses him and only slightly wants to take over his body to destroy all of humanity.

I should mention that this build is built much more for blue Kayn (the Shadow Assassin) than Raast. I might make a Raast build at some point but for now my focus is much more on replicating Kayn’s mobility and high damage output than Raast’s sustained damage. Blue Kayn is much more similar to regular Kayn than Raast as well. Just be sure to focus down ranged opponents with this build, and if you kill too many melee enemies ask your DM if you can change your race to a Tiefling.

GOALS

I am the weapon, you are a tool - Fun fact; Raast is sentient, and that’s rather necessary for this build. I think most people know where this is going but there’s a nice bonus utility in the subclass we’ll be picking.

Stealthy ganks from the dark - With a dash, a long-ranged lunge, and the ability to walk through walls you’ll be able to keep up with your enemies with ease. Believe it or not getting a spell to walk through walls in 5e is rather difficult, but still quite possible.

Kill the body - As a Shadow Assassin you’re meant to quickly burst down anyone you run into, so high damage output will be key.

RACE

Kayn was always a very skilled individual but he’s still only human. Luckily Variant Humans can still hold their own in a fight. Bump your Charisma and Wisdom with your two free points and take the Acrobatics skill as you are naturally nimble on your feet. For your Feat take Mobile to further increase your mobility and dodge enemy auto-attacks. And for Language... honestly it doesn’t matter just pick whatever language you think will be useful. Spoiler alert: this build is going to end up getting a lot of languages.

ABILITY SCORES

15; CHARISMA - You’re a pretty anime boy who learnt how to be a scary shadow man from the scariest shadow man around. Also I think anyone who knows a thing or two about 5e knows the real reason for this high Charisma score.

14; DEXTERITY - You are naturally dexterous and while in a real world I’d love for this to be a 20 unfortunately there’s no finesse Scythe weapon in 5e so we’ll have to have that high Charisma score instead. Even so DEX leads to AC and 2 is more than enough for the armor we’ll be wearing. (NOTE: If you’re rolling for stats your Dexterity doesn’t need to be higher than a 14.)

13; WISDOM - Wisdom is tied to a variety of vision skills which you’ll need to be an assassin. Knowing to read your opponent’s moves is key in Zed’s Shadow Order, and being able to bandage yourself never hurt anyone. It’s also a requirement to multiclass so...

12; CONSTITUTION - Your recommended build includes Black Cleaver which provides a nice boost to your health. That, and you don’t want to be squishy as a melee fighter.

10; STRENGTH - Strength isn’t that necessary for this build as Raast does all the heavy lifting, but dumping it isn’t as in-character as dumping...

8; INTELLIGENCE - Noxus isn’t known for its education system, and you were put into the army when you were just a child which certainly didn’t help you learn math.

BACKGROUND

For your background choose the Faction Agent from the Sword Coast Adventurer’s Guide. You are a member of the Shadow Order and while that isn’t a faction on the Sword Coast it most certainly is a faction. You gain Insight proficiency as well as an Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma ability of your choice - choose Intimidation as shadow assassins tend to be a pretty spooky lot. You also get the Safe Haven feature which lets you communicate with members of Zed’s order to gain access to a hidden safe house, free room and board, or assistance in finding information. If they ask why they should help tell them you’re Zed’s protege. Or just kill them for their defiance - that would be in character too.

THE BUILD

LEVEL 1 - RANGER 1

SURPRISE! This isn’t a pure Hexblade build! Quite surprisingly this build doesn’t even go that deep into Hexblade! Anyways we’re starting with Ranger over Hexblade because the skills and saving throws that a Ranger gets are far more useful to us. With that in mind take proficencies in Athletics, Stealth, and Survival to survive the jungle, gank your opponents, and survive a 1v1.

You also get Favored Enemy and the most in-flavor enemy to choose would be Fiends (as that’s what Raast would be classified as) but feel free to metagame a bit and ask your DM what types of enemies you’ll be facing - one of the key features of Kayn is the ability to adapt your play-style to whatever the enemy team picked. Enemy team got a Teemo? Take Halflings as a preferred enemy and chop down that little pest. You also get a language that’s supposed to be tied to your favored enemy, and for the sake of roleplay I’d suggest taking Infernal. Raast is an old Darkin and chances are he won’t be nice enough to talk to you in Common.

You also get Natural Explorer and again there’s no option here that’s too necessary for roleplay so I’d suggest asking your DM on what setting will be the most useful. Technically Forest is the closest similarity to the jungle but the key to playing Ranger is knowing ahead of time where the campaign will take place.

On Revised Ranger / Class Feature Variants Ranger: This build doesn’t require too much from your favored enemy and terrain but it’s well-known that the Revised Ranger UA and Class Feature Variants UA help Ranger out a lot. This build uses one of the subclasses from Xanathar’s Guide to Everything which work perfectly fine without the UA features. Even so the UA features help a lot so if your DM allows them absolutely take the opportunity to use them. Favored Enemy from the Revised Ranger PDF provides a big boost to your utility, and Deft Explorer is far more useful to you than Natural Explorer. If you plan on taking the Canny feature the skills I suggest to boost are Athletics, Medicine, Stealth, or Survival. Favored Foe from the class feature variants UA is fine but I’d honestly prefer the Revised Ranger’s favored enemy instead.

LEVEL 2 - WARLOCK 1

And now we get the key portion of this build. We’re going into Warlock and I think most people have identified what we’ve came for: Hexblade! The Hexblade patron lets you find a living scythe in the underbelly of Noxus which will give you immense power with the slight caveat that it may try to take over your body in order to destroy the world. Regardless you gain Hex Warrior which lets you attack using your Charisma modifier instead of Strength or Dexterity, which is good because a scythe usually requires a lot of upper body strength but now we can just use our dashing good looks instead. I should mention now that probably the closest you’ll get to a scythe in 5e is a War Pick, but the War Pick can’t be wielded in two-hands and Kayn doesn’t use a shield so ask your DM if you can reflavor a Battleaxe as a scythe, since you can use it in two hands thanks to the versatile property. (Don’t worry though; we’ll get a more scythe-like weapon soon.)

You also gain Hexblade’s Curse which lets you cast Chilling Smite (the summoner spell; not the Paladin ability) on an opponent to do extra damage to them and heal when they die. You can only target one creature with this and gain it back on a short or long rest so save it for the enemy ADC to pop them quick or place it on a tank to shred through them like Raast asked you too.

You also gain access to Pact Magic - You get 2 cantrips of your choice and you may notice that we’re not taking the weapon attack boosting cantrips: there’s a very specific reason for this. Anyways this is probably going to be one of the few times that I honestly suggest Sword Burst as a viable spell as it lets you spin around with Reaping Slash to deal damage to any enemy beside you that fails a DEX save. And none of these spells are really in-character for an AD champion so screw it you may as well take Eldritch Blast in case you need a ranged attack.

For your spells Armor of Agathys lets you shield yourself in cold shadows which provide a bit of extra temporary hitpoints and also cause your enemies to take damage if they hit you. Wrathful Smite from the Hexblade list lets you use Blade's Reach from inside a wall to do extra psychic damage to an enemy and they have to make a Wisdom saving throw or else become Frightened of the fact that you’re ganking them - should’ve warded bro!

LEVEL 3 - WARLOCK 2

With 2 levels in Warlock you gain access to Eldritch Invocations and while there is literally an invocation called “Armor of Shadows” we won’t be taking it. I haven’t mentioned it yet but while Kayn doesn’t wear a shirt in League you can’t have a 20 in DEX like he does unless you get really lucky with your dice rolls, so feel free to wear some Medium armor since in 5e armor doesn’t affect your movement speed. I recommend getting your hands on a Breastplate as early as possible as it will give you good AC while still allowing you to be stealthy by not imposing disadvantage on stealth rolls. (Which you can remedy with a Feat but Medium Armor Master is bad.)

Anyways we’re going to start with Devil’s Sight for those who can not see in the dark, which as a human you currently are. For now you can leave your other invocation empty since we need Warlock 3 to get the next invocation we want. Likewise we’re also going to wait until next level to choose our spell.

LEVEL 4 - WARLOCK 3

And now we gain access to our Pact Boon, and to the surprise to no one we’ll be picking Pact of the Blade which is the pact of choice for any melee Warlock. Pact of the Blade lets you summon any melee weapon into your hands to use as you wish. What’s more is that as a Hexblade this also works with your Hex Warrior feature so you can now use a Heavy weapon with your Charisma. Again while there’s no scythe weapon in 5e a glaive is like a scythe with a smaller blade. It does a d10 slashing damage and has the reach property which will allow you to attack at a 10 foot range, keeping you safe from opportunity attacks. Does this make Mobile’s ability to negate opportunity attacks largely redundant? Yes!

You can also now take the Improved Pact Weapon invocation which lets you wield a two-handed weapon and still cast your Warlock spells. The weapon also gains +1 to attack and damage rolls, and you can also summon a shortbow, longbow, light crossbow, or heavy crossbow as your pact weapon instead of just a melee weapon. While Raast might get bitter that you borrowed Varus’ bow don’t feel limited in your weapon choice.

You also gain access to second level spells and we’ll grab both Blur and Branding Smite from the Hexblade list. Blur lets you up your jukes to give creatures disadvantage when they attack you unless they’re scripting and have blindsense, and Branding Smite lets you do Radiant damage to the target and make sure that they don’t use stealth to get away. You’re sort of midway decent against Evelynn but this will help you get the upper hand on her.

LEVEL 5 - WARLOCK 4

4th level Warlocks get an Ability Score Improvement - bump your Charisma for better attack rolls and damage rolls.

You also gain access to another spell and Hold Person will let Raast knock up a target so you and your allies can hit them. (Note: Hold Person will not strike an enemy up into the air it’ll just paralyze them, which is still very useful!)

In addition you get another cantrip and like I said before none of these are really in-flavor for an AD champion so just grab Prestigitation or Minor Illusion to do some funky Shadow Order trickery.

Also I might suggest replacing your Smite spells with other spells that don’t take your Bonus Action soon? This is just an advanced step if your DM is really stingy on the rules - there aren’t many spells that I’d want at this level but you’re still welcome to pick and choose instead of having Wrahtful Smite and Branding Smite.

LEVEL 6 - WARLOCK 5

5th level Warlocks gain access to another Invocation which will be Sign of Ill Omen, which lets you Bestow (a) Curse of a floating scythe above your opponent’s head which will allow you to do an extra d8 Necrotic damage per hit, give them disadvantage on an ability check of your choosing, disadvantage on attacks against you (because you’re inside of them technically), and the target must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw or else be unable to do anything. This is the closest we’ll get to mechanically when it comes to replicating Umbral Trespass but in essence you can treat this like a more beefy Hexblade’s Curse which requires concentration and only comes back after a Long Rest.

You also gain access to third level spells which means that finally we can put a level into Shadow Step. Blink lets you roll a d20 and on an 11 or higher you go to the Ethereal Plane where yes: you can walk through walls. At the start of each of your turns you reappear in the open and have to roll another d20 to disappear again. This spell is somewhat unreliable but it is a way to walk through walls as well as avoid damage and get the jump on your enemies.

Also if you took my advice from the last level I’d probably suggest replacing one of your Smites will a spell like Gaseous Form or something? GF lets you travel through walls as long as there are cracks in them and while it doesn’t increase your speed it is more reliable than Blink for getting around. If your DM is nice I’d also suggest taking another third level spell - not quite sure which one but there are a lot of great options at this level.

LEVEL 7 - RANGER 2

Now that we got Shadow Step it’s time to get access to our passive. But firstly level 2 Rangers get to pick a Fighting Style - unfortunately Great Weapon Fighting isn’t an option so your best bet will be the Defense style for +1 to your AC. (Yeah we’re still wearing armor.)

You also gain access to Spellcasting and... bleh giving spells to an AD character is always weird. I’d recommend Hunter’s Mark to get value out of your passive and Ensnaring Strike to cast Chilling Smite (again: the LoL summoner spell) on a fleeing opponent.

On Class Feature Variants Ranger: Hunter’s Mark is built into Favored Foe if you use it instead of Favored Enemy, which is why I suggest using the Revised Ranger Favored Enemy if your DM will allow a mix-and-match between the two UAs.

LEVEL 8 - RANGER 3

Now here’s the real shocker of the build: your Ranger subclass. Take the Horizon Walker for some unique shadow dimension shenanigans! At early levels you get access to Detect Portal which isn’t really in flavor for Kayn but to be honest chances are you won’t use this ability much. You will however gain access to Planar Warrior which lets you add a d8 of force damage to a single weapon attack as a bonus action. Force really isn’t resisted much and a d8 of it every turn can greatly increase your damage output. You also gain access to some class-specific spells and Protection from Evil and Good lets you share some of your anime determination powers to stop Darkin (as well as aberrations, celestials, elementals, fey, and undead) from hurting your allies as easily.

You also gain access to Primeval Awareness which is... it is... it certainly is! Truthfully while I’ve been avoiding talking about the Class Feature Variants UA I think Primal Awareness’ spell list is far more useful and in-character for this build. Speaking of spells you get another spell known: take Longstrider to use Shadow Step’s movement speed to close in on your foes. Along with Mobile you’ll be walking at 50 movement speed, which is practically dashing speed!

LEVEL 9 - RANGER 4

4th level Rangers get an Ability Score Improvement: bump your Charisma for maximum damage and accuracy with your weapon as well as maximum anime speeches about how you’ll become galactic emperor of the universe.

LEVEL 10 - RANGER 5

5th level Rangers get an Extra Attack, allowing you to increase your damage output and burst your enemy down more quickly.

You also gain access to second level spells such as Silence which lets you stop any pesky caster from bursting you down... wait you’re caster now too shit. Make sure to stop concentrating on Silence before trying to use Blink to Shadow Step.

And speaking of second level spells you also get access to Flash-I mean Misty Step to quickly teleport out of danger if needed, but honestly with Mobile you can avoid most sources of damage by disabling the enemy’s ability to opportunity attack. Especially considering that you’re using a huge “scythe” with reach getting hit by opportunity attacks really shouldn’t be an issue.

LEVEL 11 - RANGER 6

6th level Rangers get Favored Enemy and Natural Explorer improvements and you know what that means? More languages! :D Again feel free to metagame and ask your DM what to pick since none of these are too in-character. ...Or just use UA?

LEVEL 12 - RANGER 7

7th level Horizon Walkers gain access to Ethereal Step and let’s be honest this was the main reason to pick Horizon Walker. This will let you cast the Etherealness spell which is a far more reliable Shadow Step than Blink will ever be. You can move in any direction though moving up or down will cost double movement. The spell only lasts for 1 turn but with 40 movement speed from Mobile you should be able to get wherever you’re going. This ability comes back after a short rest: Shadow Step has a long cool-down so don’t waste it!

You also get another second level spell and ehhhhhh? None of these are overly impressive or in character so I dunno... Find Traps? I just want to remind everyone that you don’t have to follow this build word-for-word, and even if you’re an anime edgelord some extra healing never hurt anyone. 

LEVEL 13 - RANGER 8

Level 8 Rangers get another Ability Score improvement but with a maxed out Charisma modifier you can prove worthy of some Feats.

Alert - A Shadow Assassin doesn’t get surprised, and this feat will guarantee that you always go first.

Charger - Charger lets you capitalize on your massive mobility and chase someone before managing to strike them with Raast. If you manage to pair it with Blink you can Shadow Step through walls before coming behind the enemy ADC.

Prodigy - Kayn in lore is a Prodigy, and this can help you cover up some of the skills your party might not have. Also more languages! If you’re looking for the most in-character skills to have Expertise in go for Acrobatics, Athletics, Intimidation, or Stealth.

Savage Attacker - Channel your inner Raast to get more damage out.

Lucky - Luck is a tool, just like any other.

You also get access to Land’s Stride which lets you move through non-magical difficult terrain without spending extra movement, further decreasing the usefulness of Mobile. You can also Shadowstep through plants that would otherwise harm you, and have advantage on saving throws against magical plants that might impeed your movement. Build the body.

LEVEL 14 - RANGER 9

9th level Rangers get access to 3rd level spells: take whatever you think is good honestly because you’re going to use all your 3rd level slots on Haste from the Horizon Walker list anyways. Go on; shoot faster! Wait woups sorry wrong Champion.

LEVEL 15 - RANGER 10

10th level Rangers get another terrain for Natural Explorer. Again discuss with your DM on what to take, or use the UA rules.

You also get Hide in Plain Sight which lets you prepare for an ambush at the Noxtoraa. You can spend 1 minute to hide in the shadows for a +10 bonus to stealth as long as you remain still... or you could just take the Pass Without a Trace spell?

LEVEL 16 - RANGER 11

11th level Horizon Walkers get access to Distant Strike. When you make an attack you can bounce between shadows to teleport 10 feet before you attack. In addition if you attack two different creatures you can attack a third with an extra attack.

The damage of Planar Warrior increases to 2d8 at this level for more damage with The Darkin Scythe, and you get another spell so take what you want: probably a 1st level spell since you’ll be spending all your 2nd level spells on Misty Step and 3rd level spells on Haste.

LEVEL 17 - RANGER 12

12th level Rangers get another Ability Score improvement. Refer to level 8 Ranger for Feat options.

LEVEL 18 - RANGER 13

13th level Rangers get access to 4th level spells: Locate Creature will allow you to find your mark no matter where they might go.

You also get Banishment from the Horizon Walker list which is really useful if any of Raast’s friends come for a visit.  "Rhaast..? Why are you trembling?" "It's nothing Kayn. Nothing at all."

LEVEL 19 - RANGER 14

14th level Rangers get another Favored Enemy! Aaah! How many times do I have to say it: ask your DM on what you’ll be facing in the campaign, even though by this point it really doesn’t matter.

You also get the Vanish trait which allows you to Hide as a bonus action to use that stealth score of yours, and makes it impossible to track you unless your enemies are using magic or you’re leading them into an ambush.

LEVEL 20 - RANGER 15

Our capstone is the 15th level of Horizon Walker which gives you access to the Spectral Defense feature. When you take damage you can use your reaction to gain Resistance to it, halving the damage. Remember that you only have one Reaction but this is still a very useful ability to have in case you bite off more than you can chew as you’re known to do.

You also get another spell and again: pick your poison by this point it really doesn’t matter.

FINAL BUILD

PROS

'Cause either way we're dead, oh - With up to 3 attacks every turn, Planar Warrior damage, Hexblade’s Curse, Hunter’s Mark, Haste, and Bestow Curse you can output some extreme damage at close range. You even have Eldritch Blast and the ability to turn Raast into a bow for ranged combat.

Free the body - You have an immense amount of mobility tools between Mobile’s movement increase, Misty Step, Blink, Haste, Ethereal Step, and even Longstrider. I believe we accomplished the goal of walking through walls and then some.

A craftsman never blames his tools - You have a surprising amount of utility under your belt with a lot of proficiencies, an ungodly amount known languages, and a lot of Ranger spells and skills giving you tools to start a fight.

CONS

Death finds fools quickly. - Despite being a melee fighter you aren’t very bulky, with a relatively low AC and a lower Constitution you’re just a few hits away from being in Power Word Kill range. Feel free to invest in some Ruby Crystals, or more particularly an Amulet of Health.

Talk, talk, talk. All you ever do is talk! - You’ve got an immense amount of Concentration spells and not a lot of Constitution to concentrate with. With a mere +1 to CON saves and no Warcaster or other such feat you’ll end up losing Concentration often. Hm maybe that’s why Kayn drops Shadowstep if he gets hit?

Shadows touch all - Excluding Charisma you have almost no investment in your stats, and while your class makes up for your low Strength and Dexterity saves you can easily be hit by any Intelligence or Wisdom saving throw.

But that only matters if you get hit: keep to the shadows, strike your enemies when they least expect it and then meld back into the darkness for your next kill. And be sure to focus the ranged enemies unless you want to swap characters mid-campaign.

On Raast

As I said previously this build is built much more around Shadow Assassin Kayn than Raast. I may make a Raast build at some point but it would require a far different level progression, including the fact that you’d be playing a Tiefling instead of a Human. Chances are if I ever make an Aatrox build that would be a far better analogy to Raast.

If you’re planning on potentially turning into Raast at some point discuss it with your DM. You’d essentially be changing characters completely at that point.

Your Self-Esteem and Your Business Success

Having a healthy degree of self-esteem is essential for every person. It can help you put things in proper perspective which in turn makes it possible to get through life's challenges and achieve the things you set out to attain. So, do you value yourself? Would you like who you are?

You probably now have any idea what self-esteem is. But let us make it clearer still. The expression self-esteem is often related to self-confidence. But it isn't quite that-although there's a co-relation. Self-confidence aids self-esteem. However, self-esteem runs much deeper, it's more encompassing. We can sum this up by stating that self-esteem is a blend of self-confidence and self-worth. It's the belief in one's abilities and significance; the certainty that one can live and worthy of being here.

In order words, just being exceptionally capable alone is not sufficient to make you appreciate yourself. Hard to imagine? I will illustrate: if it is possible to paint and draw like no other artist on the planet, that won't affect how that you respect yourself if what you really value is academic art.

Similarly, in the event you even excel in a specific component of academics, such success will not do your self-esteem much good if this is not what you have always wanted to do. Thus, rising to the top of someone's profession is unlikely to influence an individual's sense of self-worth if they're not proud of the profession. It is clear now, is not it? Self-esteem comes from a sense of personal efficacy and a sense of personal value.

Enough of definitions. How can this feature help us in life, particularly in our MLM or Online businesses? Someone with a high self-esteem is usually able to concentrate on the positive aspects of things, as opposed to dwelling on negativity that often breeds frustration and hinders the attainment of business objectives. Undoubtedly there'll be times in your business when things won't turn out the way you anticipated.

There'll also be times when you'll be stressed out and stopping seems the most reasonable thing to do. A top self-esteem will see you through these times. It helps a person to distinguish the failure of a individual's method and the failure of the individual himself.

The man who believes in themselves and their skills will just change the methods or approach, maybe even selecting another set of employees and trying again. The thing is that so long as you think you have what it takes to be successful in your business, if you hang on long enough, you will succeed!

Self-esteem assists your business in still other ways. It can help you to take calculated, creative risks and propels one to push through with your choices, as you believe you're capable. Subsequently, this positive mindset brings willing clients and the perfect sort of staff. The thing is that in the business world, particularly today's highly competitive business environment, the normal client prefers to take care of the business person who exudes some degree of self-belief.

Ask yourself, would you hire a lawyer or marketer who doesn't believe in their skills? Hardly! It's also true in other professions also. A high self-esteem can allow you to deal more confidently with customers. It will certainly manifest in your communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills, all which will help to attract new customers and business deals.

We can go on and on. But suffice it to say that as a business person or an entrepreneur, a healthy self-esteem is a valuable asset that you ought to try to cultivate. If you lack it, people will have doubts on your skills. But if you've got it, it often brings people to you and your business.

According to me, being in charge of your own life means knowing precisely what you would like and making sure you get it. If you're in charge of your life YOU decide what happens. You do not just let yourself be pushed by other forces outside of yourself. You're the captain and your life is your boat. You pick the destination and the way of getting their. If you do not take charge of your life you're merely a small ant which happened to be on board of the boat and that lets itself be carried from place to place with no influence over the steering wheel.

In case you've got low self-esteem you do not dare to dream. Deep inside you do not feel as though you deserve asking for what you want. You are like a small child who has learnt it is far better to sit quietly and wait to see what happens rather than a kid who loudly informs everyone that he/she doesn't like bananas but enjoys apples. The quiet child is just as likely to get served a banana or an apple but the kid with higher self-esteem is more likely to find the apple than the banana. Because they don't believe in their own ability and they are confident that the world out there's uncontrollable and frightening, the feel helpless. Another consequence of increasing your self-esteem is you will no longer feel a need to defend yourself or to conceal yourself. Regardless of what other folks think you are going to learn that you're on the right path. With high self-esteem you won't be scared of failing. Failing is just a process of finding out what doesn't work and it brings you nearer to the solution that does work. Consequently you may dare to take more risks. The more risks you dare to take the quicker you'll move towards your objective. The more different methods you try, the more probable you will find the method that requires you to your objective.

Growing up in her little village in the Marches she never quite felt welcome in the Chantry, but she also had some Chantry priests who were kind to her, and she saw how that one little building seemed to bring people together. After learning about the bigger picture she’s somewhat more disillusioned, but still remembers wanting that feeling of community. Cooking - growing up on a farm and then having to usually make her own food with the mercenaries, she’s really good at making a tasty dish with very limited ingredients, and knows some interesting recipes learnt from her parents. 

Related to the above, making things with her hands is something she’s pretty good at - she can make a mean cheese, as well as being a good leatherworker and knowing some smithing and carving. 

She’s great with animals and can generally handle even the most timid or angry beasts.

Important Message About Recent Concerns

Hey there! Thank you so much for tuning in. This is Mod Ari. I want to apologise in advance because I wrote most of this around 3 AM and didn’t finish most of it until around 9 AM on Wednesday, so I’m afraid I may not be as articulate as I probably would have been hours beforehand. Since then, I’ve been trying to sort out all of the information I’ve gathered from people as well discuss everything with my mod team. I also apologise because this message is going to be very long. But, I come to everyone to address a concern that has been present since the very beginning of this project, and that is the presence of our finance mod Fiama/Fif.

Now, before I delve deeper into this topic, I want everyone to know that the issue I spoke of in a Twitter post I made a while ago isn’t exactly a true issue because it is more of a heavy concern found among a few people. I hope to defuse that by the end of this long message. The real issue is that I have failed to communicate to everyone about my decision to let her stay and that I have let these concerns grow until people have become uneasy with our zine’s management. In this message, I will discuss about the steps my team and I has taken in order to (hopefully) clear everyone’s doubts. Please bear with me and know that I speak with certainty, utmost honesty, and with respect to many people’s feelings about the matter.

First of all, I want everyone to know that this zine is the first one I have ever started on my own. I dove into this project while only being in the BNHA fandom for around 7 or so months, absolutely enamoured with the KatsuDeku relationship, and with no online zine modding experience other than being an artist in a few. The only experience I have comes from real life volunteer work as well as from my part-time job, so I opened moderator applications in hopes of getting some help and advice while being open to letting a few newcomers learn with me. But please do not think I was not capable of organising small projects and reviewing finances before this project because I was and I am. I learnt a little bit of financing from my own mother who is excellent at budgeting (as she has been through many hardships as a result of living in poverty), from my schools and classes throughout high school and current college career, and retail job (which is also where I learnt how to ship lots of packages and keep up with orders). It just never hurt to have another person, or a few others, who have previous experience help me along the way because zines are run very differently and I didn’t know how financing in zines usually worked. So, I joined other projects as moderators to see if theirs were done similarly and I wasn’t disappointed.

If I recall correctly among all of the mod applications, only two people had experience with handling finances, so I chose the one whom I thought was the better choice, which was Fif. Now, please remember that I was very new to the fandom especially in this ship (wherein back then, I only knew a group of people who I was comfortable talking to, and now I know whole communities!); and so at the time, I had no idea about who Fif is and the history she has with the zines listed in her application. This is relevant because when I revealed that she was a part of our team, two people immediately came to me and warned me about the zines she used to be a part of, what her behaviour is said to be like, and what is said she has been known to do.

I humbly ask everyone to understand that I was blissfully ignorant to the happenings within the zine scene because I was brand new to it all, but please know that I still heeded their warnings with high regards and proceeded to tell my editor/beta mod, Maj, about it (who was the first person I appointed as a co-mod and is a dear friend whom I know I can trust with everything). Both of us became cautious, but because I wasn’t sure what to believe (and I partly wanted to see for myself if the behaviour they warned me about is true), I allowed Fif to continue being in my team—but not without strongly reaffirming my position as the head of this zine. I asked for everyone’s cooperation with as much honesty as they can give me, and I told them they will receive everything I have to offer and more in return.

I believe it was at that point that everyone developed a sense of respect for one another because while we work in different areas, we all have the ability to interfere with each other’s works without needing immediate help from other people. We all had initiative and enough individual skill to make up for someone else’s errors. From then on, we communicated very often, and everyone follows the tasks I give them. We’re an efficient team with good communication, but the only unfortunate situation that had us scrambling about is that our schedules started to get out of sync due to us all being college students, which has caused us to delay completing the feedback emails (of which I personally apologise for because I am in charge of writing them).

The reason why I let Fif stay is because she has done nothing suspicious or has said (or done) anything to affect this fanzine in any way to make me believe that she is everything that people have been warning me about. I say this with complete honesty: I have seen nothing but genuine intentions on her part, and while I find it true that she is sometimes inactive, I never expected her to do any of the work I had already assigned to the rest of my team and she has always communicated to us all about the reasons why she has to be away for certain periods of time. She’s done as I have told her, answered anything I asked of her, gave her opinion when I needed it, completed the financial sheet decently, has explained to me her thought processes, let me review and check the numbers on my own, and that is all I needed from her. The rest is under my and the other mods’ control. Madin, Maj, and Grim can all attest to this, and if need be, we will provide evidence to anyone who does not believe it to be true. But after a long discussion with all three of them, we have come to a conclusion with an extremely difficult decision.

Fiama will no longer be a part of our moderator team. We have asked her to leave our project, not without remorse, and she has been removed from the server and all of our accounts.

I’ve thought about the necessary precautions in case we decided to keep her, with all the initial warnings in mind, but recently an acquaintance of mine who I also co-mod with in another zine has come to me about his experiences and is extremely worried that this zine will also be affected by so many possibilities. He has given me enough information about the zines Fif used to be a part of and how they were all handled, so I respect his opinion very highly because he was in the direct line of fire when Hallowzine happened. 

A few of our contributors has also expressed their worries to me, and now that a potential customer has also done the same, I wanted to assure everyone that we have already discussed our decision with Fif herself. The information I gathered from my own research and from talking to a few sources held enough weight for all of us to become reasonably wary. So, I have communicated my own suspicions to Fif herself, and she undoubtedly understands, and I hope that everyone currently reading this message does as well, that I do not tolerate malicious intentions of any kind and that I am a woman of my words—that while I may be an amicable person, I am not weak and I will always persist in my decisions.

That being said, I want to give everyone some insights, and although small as it is, I hope it brings anyone who reads this message a sense of comfort that we are running our zine as smoothly it can.

For starters, I had established in the beginning that I will be the one handling money in this project. The payment systems I have created are both connected to my personal bank accounts, but I am allowing my entire team access to it so that they, as well as everyone else involved in the zine, can have the reassurance that I do not hold any malicious intent with the money sent to those accounts. However, if anything suspicious happens to the money at anytime during the pre-orders period, rest assured that anyone in the team or I will be closing the accounts immediately and freeze this project momentarily until we find a solution to whatever issue that may arise. I highly doubt that any of my moderators have the desire to steal money for personal and evil purposes, but I want everyone to know that I can be trusted too.

Secondly, I have contacted an acquaintance and a colleague from my part-time job, both of whom are accounting majors, to help me look over the financial sheet. My acquaintance and I have reviewed it together a few days ago, and we did not find anything suspicious or wrong with it; and before that, I had reviewed it several times myself to see the progress made on the sheet. My friend has done so as well yesterday and shares the same thoughts. So, I believe it is safe to say that the budgeting is done correctly, but because we have officially removed Fif from the project, we will have to make slight adjustments to the sheet. It is still under discussion, but one of the options I presented to my mods is that we can invite my acquaintance and help us out for a bit, at least to re-organise the sheet. It’s only an option however because we have yet to see if she’s needed or not. As previously mentioned, the team and I are all capable of handling the job ourselves, but we’ll definitely give out more information about what we’ll decide on doing.

Lastly, in an ask I had answered previously, an anon wanted to know if there were any funds saved for emergencies or for the contributors, and I want to relay what I said in here too: I have $800 saved up for this project, or more specifically for the contributors, but I can and will use it to cover anything lost should there be any unfortunate events in the future. This $800 is my investment and testament as to how seriously I treat this project, and I know that the rest of my mods (as well as close friends) will do their best to pitch in with anything they can offer.

In the end, we have done all we could to ensure the safety of this project, our contributors, and our potential customers. I support the absolute validity of all their concerns just as I fully respect everyone’s opinions. The rest of the team has their own reservations about Fif’s zine history, but we were absolutely prepared and had precautions set just in case we decided to let her stay. Either way, even without her aid, Wanderlust will continue to run strong because I believe that the team I chose is capable on their own feet and are versatile enough that I believe they can handle everything even without my presence in this project. 

It shakes my morality to the core knowing that Fif did not do anything wrong during the course of this project, that it is not entirely fair of me or the rest of the mods to do so; but we will always hold the safety of our contributors and future customers with the highest priority.

To end this long and arduous note, I can only humbly ask everyone to place their trust in us—in Madin, in Maj, in Grim, in ME. Because while I know we have our own faults to improve on, being in this team has already helped teach us things we need to know in any future projects. We will continue to be as transparent and honest as we have been since the very beginning. We’re just so, so sorry that this has and is causing so many people to doubt us, but I cannot blame anyone for it. I can only place that blame onto myself for not knowing her background when I should have been more responsible and researched it. For that, I want to apologise for ever causing such a feeling to surface. To the people who has seen and felt the consequences of the fallout regarding Hallowzine or any other zines that ended in a similar light, I want to apologise as well because I’m sure that those situations must have been incredibly difficult to deal with, and it must have been uncomfortable knowing that the possibility of history repeating itself again was plausible.

I hope that you all may have the heart to forgive my oversights and that you do not place any blame onto my team. Know that I will take full responsibility and accountability in the event that our project fails for any reason—however, I am absolutely certain that it will never happen because I trust my three co-mods with all my heart. It’s only up to you now to decide whether we are still worthy of your trust, and whether I am worthy of that trust. 

I’ll end my statement with this: Wanderlust will remain strong so as long as I or the rest of my team are here to run it.

How To Start Teaching Yourself a Language: 10 Simple Tips For Success in Language Learning

Do you dream of learning another language, but you’re not quite sure how to start?

Maybe you’ve recently downloaded your first language learning app, but you’re not quite sure how to go from screen to reality.

Or if you learnt a language in the past and want to refresh your skills, you’re wondering if the world has anything new to offer besides weekly evening classes at the community centre.

Congratulations to you! This is an exciting time. If you’re feeling curious but confused about how to teach yourself a language, this is the right article for you.

Today I have 10 simple tips that will make starting your new language a total success and help you stay motivated for many months and maybe even years. They’re perfect for beginners, or learners who need a fresh burst of inspiration.

Let’s get started:

1. Tidy Up Your Mind

Have you heard about the life changing magic of tidying up? I mean that Marie Kondo book and Netflix show. In Marie Kondo’s world, the simple act of letting go of your less exciting stuff is a way to improve ALL of your life. And that advice works for language learning too!

Before you saddle yourself with the new project of learning another language, it pays to tidy up your mind.

Start with a simple list, asking yourself: “What do I believe about my language learning abilities right now?”

Once all the beliefs are out on paper or screen, examine each one to find out which ones are actually useful to you. In Marie Kondo terms, find the ones that spark joy and throw out all the others. Your brain will be clutter-free and ready for a positive new start!

2. Write a Note for Future You

As you’re currently reading this article, you are probably excited and keen to jump into learning your new language. This is awesome! Let me ask you one more question:

What are your reasons for learning this language?

You have got to know your reasons and hold on to them, because the world is going to start getting distracting. Textbooks and evening classes make lots of assumptions about why you’re learning.

For example, if you’re truly in Japanese class because you love manga, you’ll soon get bored of a textbook for busy travellers. When that happens, it’s easy to assume that you have lost your love for everything in the language.

So make sure you are prepared and do write down what motivates you, and once you get bored you’ll have a letter to open and remember where your true North is pointing.

3. Get Great Gear

Every new project deserves some gear. Runners buy shoes, knitters buy wool, and language learners buy notebooks, dictionaries, textbooks and other delightful things.

If you’re someone who loves to start a new project with an optimistic shopping excursion, go ahead and indulge! For tips on what and how to buy, read No More Hoarding! How to Organize All Your Language Learning Resources.

And to save a bit of money, don’t forget that libraries and second-hand shops always stock a few shelves of language resources that you can use.

4. Get More Than One App

Beyond your paper resources, your smartphone is an amazing language learning tool. The most famous language learning app you might know is Duolingo, but don’t stop there. Download three, four, seven apps to help you learn. Why not!

Every language learning app uses a slightly different system. Get yourself a whole range of different apps to test drive and make it your goal to find out which one’s the most enjoyable.

It’s easy to start ignoring one app’s notifications when you’ve broken the streak. In fact, my advice is to switch notifications off completely as they can easily make you feel bad about your progress when you’re actually doing well.

5. Read a Story

Research has shown that learners who learn by reading and listening to lots of interesting input at the right level can learn languages up to six times faster than those who study rules and textbook dialogues.

The trick here is to find something you’re interested in: perhaps a fun short story (like in my German Uncovered course), a video game, comic book, or a song.

Don’t be afraid to immerse yourself in something you only half understand, see if your brain can start seeing any patterns, and make best friends with your dictionary.

It’s surely challenging, but you’ll be amazed at just how much you can learn just from enjoying something you love.

6. Research Music

There are so many cool ways of using music for learning a language that it deserves its own place in this list. You can start by searching online for artists that make your favourite style of music in their language (rap and hip hop are amazing for this), or by investigating local music styles.

Then just hit play and enjoy. To go a little further, you can start reading the lyrics or researching artist interviews. Feeling more ambitious? Attend a concert!

7. Express Yourself NOW

Most people think that they have to wait until they have studied for 50+ hours before they can start expressing anything meaningful in another language. But what if you could flip the script and START by expressing yourself right away?

The trick here is to realise that you don’t have to do this by writing a perfect essay. Expressing how you’re feeling can start with something as simple as one word (“hungry” - “tired” - “headache” - “curious” and so on) and it will help you learn the most relevant and important vocabulary you could ever wish for.

Your act of self-expression can be long like a diary entry or short like a tweet. You can make it by creating a colourful art collage, or by writing the same word in 20 different pens. If you’re feeling brave, you can even share your creation online or record an audio diary.

What matters is that you signal to yourself that you’re ready right now, instead of having to wait for some kind of future level.

8. Make Daily Contact

While I’m on the subject of avoiding anything that makes you feel like you’re “not good enough yet”, I have another tip that has served me fantastically well with every language I’ve taught myself since I left full-time education:

Make daily contact with the language.

That’s all. No need to study 200 flashcards every day or go through four Duolingo levels. What you want is contact. Switch the radio on, watch a video, say hi to a friend, read a page in a book, do a grammar exercise, it does not matter.

Daily contact is the foundation on which you can build a solid language routine without feeling like it’s driving you around the bend.

9. Use Social Media for Language Learning

Most of the time, we think of social media as a distraction and a waste of time. But there’s another way of looking at it.

Follow accounts that share content in your target language, and you’ll instantly have a cool and relevant library of interesting stuff to study. As you get better and feel confident, start making comments in your target language and creating your own posts.

10. Try It All

Last year, I interviewed listening expert Cara Leopold for the Fluent Show, who shared this simple lesson on what works well in language learning:

Everything works.

No matter which product you buy or which blog you read, they all have something that will work. The key is finding out whether it will work for you. (“The Miracle Morning” is certainly NEVER gonna do it for me, for example.)

Try Flashcards, try vocab lists, try immersion, try podcasts, try everything that looks interesting in your target language.

Even if you find that it doesn’t work so well for you, it’s unlikely to break your language skills completely.

She doesn’t need to check the time to guess that she’s already late to class, and one glance at her device indicates her classmate’s name glowing on the screen, further confirming her deduction about the situation. 

She makes a grab for her phone, swiping the green call button before pressing the device to her ear. 

“Where the heck are you?” a voice explodes at the other end of the line. Chaemi is someone who Jinae had considered her friend until the end of the last semester, when she realized that the said girl had been distributing her notes to her other classmates with the excuse that Jinae’s notes are the best she had seen, and that knowledge should be shared among the people fighting the same battles.

Jinae hadn’t been completely comfortable with the idea, but she’d clamped her mouth shut at the retort that clawed away at her throat, instead giving the girl a tight-lipped smile. 

From that day onwards, Jinae had learnt not to trust too easily, not to fall for people’s kindness when it’s readily available.

“I’m sick.” Jinae lies smoothly as she runs a hand through her messed up bed hair, “Won’t be coming today. See you.” 

And before she can hear Chaemi’s response, she cuts off the call and falls back onto the bed.

Memories of last night float up through her mind, which is the reason as to why she has overslept and has practically wrecked her sleeping schedule. It’ll take her approximately two days to get back to routine if she manages to go to bed early tonight, but something tells Jinae that she’ll be calling an all-too familiar number soon. The conversation she’s had with Baekhyun is still fresh, impregnated in her memory like a permanent engravement. While he’s a practical stranger, he has made her feel so much better than her boyfriend ever did during these few weeks. 

Balancing her phone with one hand as she brings it up to her face, she catches sight of a familiar name on the screen. 

Taehyung, she mouths softly as if it’s a prayer that she shouldn’t be saying out loud. She opens the message and the words pop up on the screen. It reads: 

I’m sorry that I forgot to tell you about my medical conference. My phone battery died and we’re practically in the middle of nowhere, but I managed to charge it when we reached the hotel yesterday night. I’m sorry, can I call you later? 

Jinae’s nose wrinkles up in part annoyance and agitation. Is he even for real? She thinks to herself as she locks her screen and tosses her phone aside, a dead weight of frustration building up inside her stomach at the thought of being placed on the back burner all because of his career. It’s always about his career, always about himself and what he wants that are placed first. Jinae fully understands his responsibilities and had been fully supportive of his decisions at first. But she can’t seem to feel as though he’s throwing everything away just for that. And if that’s the type of person that Taehyung is like, then clearly she doesn’t seem to form part of his important circle of priorities anymore. 

The day crawls by at an uneasily slow pace, but it’s mid-afternoon when she receives a message from an unknown number. Momentarily pausing in the middle of folding her clothes, she picks up her device and reads the message with a growing sense of recognition. 

Hey, it’s Baekhyun. Hope you’re feeling better after last night. Just wanted to say that I had a nice talk with you. 

A small smile impulsively curled her lips upwards. That is indeed sweet of the familiar stranger. She can’t seem to put a face to his name, but those words are enough to make her feel warm with slight happiness. At least there’s someone that cares enough. It gives her hope that there’s someone who wants to listen to her problems, even when she barely even knows him. 

She texts back, her fingers flying over the keyboard: 

Hey. Thanks for listening to me yesterday night. Hope I didn’t take up too much of your sleeping time. Thanks again, for being there. Really, it means a lot. 

His answer comes buzzing through a few minutes later, and she doesn’t hesitate to pick up her phone to read: 

It’s no problem. I hope that helped you. Also, I told Taehyung about you. I hope you don’t mind. I think he deserves to know that you’ve been having a rough time. 

Jinae already knows this from Taehyung’s earlier message, but the reminder causes another flare of annoyance to ignite within her, causing a rush of adrenaline pumping through her blood as she thinks of all the things he’s been hiding from her. It’s not just the fact that he hadn’t even told her about his impromptu trip, it’s not just about the fact that he hadn’t even bothered telling her about his roommate. No, it has just been an accumulation of things that had built up over time the moment he’d moved to another city. 

A relationship isn’t one-sided. She needs him to understand that the only way for this to work is for both of them to cooperate and communicate with each other.  And clearly he hasn’t been doing a lot of communicating these past few days.

As he’d stated before, Taehyung calls Jinae while she’s busy stir-frying some vegetables for dinner. Feeling her phone buzz through her jean pocket, she fishes it out and puts it on speakerphone before settling the device on the counter, giving her vegetables another stir through the saucepan. 

Taehyung’s voice floats through the kitchen like an echo, “Hello? Jinae?” 

“Took you long enough.” she says in a cold tone, reaching for the pepper at the other end of the counter. 

There’s an audible sigh at the other end of the line, “You’re mad at me, aren’t you?’

‘Are you serious?’ she shakes her head while sprinkling a shower of pepper over the saucepan, ‘I’m not mad, Taehyung. I’m disappointed in you.’ 

‘I’m sorry,’ his voice sounds genuine enough but that makes her snap, ‘Do you even know why I’m mad? You’ve been MIA for the past few days. How would you feel if our roles were reversed?’ 

‘You’re right. I should’ve told you but I--’ he takes a pause, hesitating slightly before continuing, ‘You have to believe me, I really did forget to tell you.’ 

‘Yeah, because all you care about is your career.’ She shoots back snarkily, ‘look, I don’t ask for much. I don’t need you to call me every day. Heck, we can call once a month if that’s what you want. But for god’s sake Taehyung, help me out here.’ 

She can feel the tears coming, can feel their threatening prick at the back of her eyes as she struggles to keep her breathing stable enough to finish this conversation. 

Taking a deep breath, she tries to find her courage, ‘I gotta go, my dinner’s ready.’ 

‘Wait, Jinae--’ 

‘You want me to wait?’ she hisses, ‘Until when? Next week? Next month this time?’

‘Can you just listen to me--’ 

‘No Taehyung! You listen to me!’ she bellows through the phone while her knuckles turn white from gripping the phone too tightly in her hold, ‘I’ve had enough running after you when the only thing you do is take me for granted. So I’m not going to run after you anymore. If you want this relationship to work then you better prove it.’ 

She doesn’t wait for him to answer before cutting off the call and pressing the phone to her chest. The tears are already sliding down her cheeks at this point, crystal jewels reflecting the kitchen light as she takes staggering breaths. She is gripping her phone so hard that it practically engraves an indent through her skin, turning red from where she has held it so tightly. It takes her a moment to recollect herself, but when she does, it’s only because of the realization that her vegetables are burning. 

Quickly, she reaches over the stovetop to switch it off before scrambling the food over onto her plate to salvage what she can. Thankfully, most of the them seem edible, though a bit on the brown side. Grabbing some rice and plopping it on her plate, she proceeds to her couch before turning on the tv, balancing her plate on her crossed legs.

Stupid Kim Taehyung, she grumbles inwardly while switching from channel to channel, her mood having significantly darkened due to that one phone call. Sometimes, she wishes that she’s single, just to avoid all these conflicts that are unnecessary and emotionally draining. Most of all though, she feels stupid to even feel so affected by such a triviality. She wishes that she doesn’t have to care, for that would make her world so much simpler, less complicated. 

But they always say that the deepest wounds are the hardest to heal.

Byun Baekhyun is what you would call a social butterfly. 

Except that he’s never given the chance to be the confidante. He’s always called up for parties, for external activities that require social skills and entertainment. He is deemed as the funniest, stated to be the one to go to when you want to have a good time. Because of that reputation, he has gained a lot of friends and acquaintances. If they don’t know him by face, then they’d definitely know his name. Everybody knows him. 

And yet, that comes at a price. 

Because when people want him around to have fun, when they call him up to hit bars and to attend clubs, they barely tell him about their problems or their worries. 

Baekhyun knows them by name, he knows his friends by face and enjoys their company. 

But that doesn’t mean he knows them. 

So when he finds out that there had been another voicemail message for his roommate-- it’s the fifth time consecutively this week that he’s received messages from her, each more and more distressed and agitated -- he’d decided to take matters in his own hands and called her back with the intent to help her sort out her feelings. Her call out for help had been obvious and for once in his life, Baekhyun has felt like he’s actually made himself a friend. 

He hadn’t taken this as a sign that they were now full-fledged to a normal type of friendship and understands that it’s probably a one time thing. But that doesn’t stop his ears from perking up from his position on the couch upon hearing the familiar click of the receiver to indicate that another voicemail has gone through. 

He gingerly approaches the home phone and sees the light blinking, thus knowing that it isn’t just his imagination playing tricks on him. He has heard a voicemail coming in. He hesitates slightly when his hand reaches out to press the button, wondering if it’s actually wise to listen in on the messages, before realizing that this is a shared phone and that he has all the right to listen to the messages if he wishes to. 

So he presses down onto the voicemail button.

‘Hi.’ 

His head snaps up at the sound of the all-too familiar voice filtering through the flat. He stands alert, eyes pinned onto the machine. 

‘It’s me again.” there’s a slight pause. He can imagine the cogs turning in her head as she debates on what to say, “I’m not here for Taehyung though. He’s not home and I know you are, I just wanted to say that I’m really grateful,’ she laughs in a slightly awkward manner and his own mouth twitches into a half-smile, ‘The conversation we had really saved me that night, and I think I have to thank you again for that. It really helped me.’

She pauses slightly, as if pondering over what she can say next, before continuing, ‘Anyway, Good night Baekhyun.’

The mention of his name jolts him out of his senses. He stares at the receiver for a minute as he wonders if he’s hearing it right. He’s not used to this, not used to having people genuinely thank him for just being there. Whenever others reach out to him it’s always centered around parties and how fun he is, how he manages to drag people in without effort, how he can make one single reunion turn into a freaking pub crawl in merely five minutes. People praise his social skills and his attitude, people crave his compliments and enjoys his fun nature. 

And yet, there’s just something about her words that cause his chest to blossom with warmth, a smile smile alighting his lips as he thinks back to that particular night. 

And that’s when he decides to press the button that will call back her number, hovering in hesitation as he hears the dialing tone of the phone, almost like an impending death sentence. 

He doesn’t realize he’s been holding his breath until he hears a click at the other end to indicate that she has indeed, picked up the phone. 

‘Hello?’ she ventures, tone timid and shy, totally unlike the rawness she had exerted a few nights ago.

Baekhyun clears his throat awkwardly, ‘Hey. Thanks for calling back.’

‘It’s no problem,’ she replies, ‘You deserve that much for helping a stranger.’ 

Her words cause another rush of warmth to tingle up and down his spine. He can’t help but grin while jokingly saying, ‘Yeah, people say I’m good at coming up with bullshit.’ 

‘Trust me, it was pretty good bullshit.’ 

He laughs again, ‘Did you talk things through with Taehyung?’

Jinae lets out a sigh and Baekhyun guesses that things aren’t going as smoothly as they should, ‘we fought. Long story short: he’s sorry and I’m pissed.’ 

‘And you have all the right to be. Not that I’m trying to add oil to the fire.’ 

‘No,’ she replies, ‘No, he deserves it.’ 

Baekhyun is aware of his roommate’s tendency to forget things, especially when he is engrossed in his own little world of scientific facts. Taehyung might’ve been all too invested in his latest project to remember the rest of the world and it’s not fair on JInae’s end. But Baekhyun hopes that they’ll be able to work through things somehow, considering that Taehyung’s ways are really just a part of his personality. 

‘Anyway, I know I’ve taken full advantage of you that night when I ranted for so long.’ Jinae continues on and there’s a rustling to signify her movement through the room while Baekhyun sits himself down on a nearby couch, ‘So I wanted to return the favour.’ 

His eyebrow raises in curiosity, That is?’

‘It’s only fair if you’re the one to rant this time.’

That must be one of the weirdest things anyone has ever said to him, and to think that she’s nothing but a random girl on the phone, one that he barely knows and one he can’t even claim a face to her name makes him burst out into soft laughter. 

‘What?’ the girl asks, ‘What’s so funny?’

‘Nothing, it’s just--’ Baekhyun manages to calm himself down enough to say, ‘Do you realize how weird that sounded?’

‘I say a lot of weird things.’ 

‘I know you do.’ 

‘Excuse me?’ she chokes back a chuckle, amusement present in her tone, ‘You barely know me.’

‘You cried with me. I’m pretty sure I know you better than most of your friends.’ 

She seems to consider his response fair, ‘that’s true.’ she says, ‘But stop changing the subject. I really want to return the favour. Take it as a thank you gift.’

Baekhyun hums, receiver pressed to his ear. He doesn’t realize that there’s a permanent smile that seems to be plastered over his face as he swings his legs in thought, looking out his apartment window and noticing for the first time that the scenery is one that is pleasant to the eye.

‘Fine,’ he finally answers, ‘there’s something I’ve never told anyone.’ 

Her silence is enough to make him go on. 

‘I’m— err— this is weird.’ He laughs awkwardly, impulsively rubbing the back of his neck while hearing the girl laugh softly. He takes a deep breath before trying again, ‘okay, here goes: I have many friends, but barely any genuine friendships.’

She seems to take a moment to weigh his statement, ‘Go on.’ She says. 

‘I--’ he scratches his head, feeling weirdly vulnerable with the words that are tumbling out of his mouth, ‘I’ve always envied people who had close friendships. I mean, it’s not like I don’t have friends. I have them,’ he chuckles slightly, but the laugh is hollow and without meaning, filled with something other than the lightness he claims to be feeling, ‘It’s just that they never confide in me, nor do I confide in them. And I know that confiding in everyone isn’t a thing, but at the very least, I’ve always envied other people who had people they could count on, because I don’t have any.’ 

‘I’m sure that’s not true,’ Jinae insists, ‘You’re such an easy person to talk to--’ 

‘And that’s probably why,’ Baekhyun replies gently, ‘people find me too easy to talk to. They like me because i’m easy-going, because I can make them comfortable. They like having me around for a good time.’ he shakes his head although he knows that she can’t see him or his face. His lips are pressed into a tight, thin line that is taut at the corners, biting the inside of his cheek as he contemplates over the horrible truth that he has just admitted out loud. 

‘And I guess I’m partly at fault for not telling them what I really feel,’ he continues, ‘But it’s not like I can go ‘hey, tell me your problems’. It just doesn’t work that way. If people don’t trust you, then they don’t trust you and there’s nothing I can do to change that.’

Jinae hears the rawness in his voice. There’s a delicate fragility in the way his alto shakes, the way in which he measures his words carefully so as not to sound too dramatic. And yet, it hits her right in the middle of her chest. A mixture of pity and sympathy burn through her heartstrings upon listening to his explanation, and it dawns on her that friends aren’t easily given to everyone. 

It must be a pretty lonely thing, not having people other than your family you can rely on. 

When she finally finds her voice after listening to his story, she can only hope that it gives him some kind of comfort to know that someone cares and someone understands. She says: 

‘You have me.’ 

There’s a brief pause at the end of the line. Jinae can practically feel her heart beating through her ears as blood starts racing with adrenaline. Was that too forward? She can’t help but think that maybe that will only scare the boy off. In her moment of contemplation, she’d blurted out the most genuine thing she thought about her relationship to him and though it’s a brash statement to make, she believes it to be the truth. 

Because not anyone would take away their time to listen to her problems, and actually care. 

Baekhyun listened and Baekhyun had cared though he had no reason to. 

‘You--’ the words are choked at the back of his throat, ‘you don’t have to say that.’

‘But I mean it.’ she presses on, ‘you listened to me when I had my troubles, and right now I want to listen to you, because friendships are relationships between two people, and relationships are a two-way thing.’ a small chuckle leaves her lips, ‘at least that’s what I told Taehyung.’ 

He laughs lightly at the other end of the line, and she picks up the heartiness of his baritone this time. It sounds more genuine, filled with a warmer light, ‘that means a lot then. Thank you.’ 

‘Don’t thank me,’ her lips danced with a smile, ‘That’s what friends are for, right?’ 

‘Right.’ the words seem foreign falling from his mouth, ‘friends.’ 

She grins into the receiver, ‘Let’s make a deal.’ 

‘Okay, shoot.’ 

‘I’ll be your person whenever you need to talk or rant, and you’ll be mine when I’m having a mental breakdown.’

‘That sounds like a fair enough deal.’ 

‘Of course it’s fair,’ she scoffs, ‘I made it.’ 

‘And here I thought I made myself a decent friend.’ 

A small chortle erupts through her throat, ‘stop trying to insult me. We both know I’m amazing.’ 

‘And here goes her ego.’ Baekhyun laughs with her, his alto filling her with a pool of warmth so that she can’t help but let another smile stretch across her mouth before breaking into a full out grin, ‘Admit it,’ she can’t help but tease him as she runs a hand through her hair absentmindedly, ‘I’m a great person.’ 

He pauses. Then, ‘You are.’ 

The words are warm and full of genuine clarity. There’s no hesitation, no attempt to please her. Just the truth coming out of his mouth, and Jinae can’t help but feel like there’s just something about this young man that makes her enjoy his company. 

She doesn’t know whether it’s the way he seems to be saying everything from his heart or the fact that she can hear the truth with just the mere presence of his voice, but though she shouldn’t be trusting him so easily with her problems, there’s just something magical about him that makes her want to get closer and to get to know him better. She feels like out of all people she’s met, he understands her the most. He is wise and open-minded to understand that she’s different, and yet provides her with a comfort that one else ever did. It’s as if he can step in her shoes for a small moment and be her, experience what she does, before giving her the opinion she needs. 

‘I should be going to sleep soon.’ Baekhyun finally breaks the spell of the moment. Jinae glanes at her clock on her bedstand to realize that they’ve spoken for more than an hour. 

Hurriedly, she quickly replies, ‘Yeah. I should be going too. I didn’t realize we’ve spoken for so long.’ 

‘Let me know what’s up with Taehyung,’ Baekhyun states with a firmness, ‘I’ll beat him up if he gets unreasonable.’ 

She laughs, ‘Thanks, I’ll keep that in mind.’ 

‘You better.’ he says. ‘Thank you, for today.’ 

Jinae softens, ‘you’re welcome.’

SILVER ARTS AWARD

Silver Arts Award Unit 1 Part A: Identify and plan an arts challenge

What art forms are you interested in/do you like? I am in interested in both literature and the dramatic arts. I enjoy reading poetry, such as that of Wordsworth and Ovid. At an Oxford lecture, I was told that Wordsworth’s The Prelude can be regarded as antechamber and the rest of the work like a church. That amazed me, as I did not know beforehand that a poem could be as well structured as a play (e.g. Pirandello’s Six Characters in Search of an Author).

What arts/creative skills do you already have or feel confident in? I studied English literature at A-level and used to take acting classes at YATI. Thus, I feel most confident in acting and writing, rather than painting or sculpting. I have looked into pursuing an English Literature degree at a Russell Group university and the future and so something involved with writing or acting out a script might interest me best.

What arts/creative skills would you like to develop or try out? I would like to work on directing. While at YATI, I attended a film-making course, which I very much enjoyed. However, the course was only temporary and I was disappointed when it ended. I feel it would be beneficial for me to boost my leadership and teamwork qualities, so perhaps another acting or film-making course which involved me taking more of an active role now that I am older would be good.

Do you have any ideas for possible challenges you could set yourself? You could discuss this with your adviser and record notes here. I am very enthusiastic but I am not used to leadership experiences. I think it would be good for me have a go at giving whichever group I am working in some good ideas. It would also be useful for me to learn how to better deal with criticism. I feel I respond appropriately to criticism, but there is always room for improvement.

Your challenge

I will be extending an arts skill I already have (film-making).

Describe your arts challenge here: It is a film-making project with the Holborn Community Association (HCA) and it involves a group of young people making a film about transportation in London. The project is done in association with the London Transport Museum and will get the opportunity to visit their depot in Acton, which is normally open to the public only three times a year. Once complete, we will have the opportunity to screen our film at a local festival.

Why have you chosen this as your arts challenge? I am already familiar with the HCA, as my mother works there and I know one of the people who is running this course (Chloe). As well as developing my film-making further, I also want to make new friends, who may have similar interests to me, as they will likely also have ‘creative’ personalities.

What will the outcome of your challenge be? (E.g. an end product, a performance, a demonstration?) The outcome of my challenge will be a finished product which has been edited and made ready to present to an audience. Our on-screen performances will be shown to an audience. A previous film this group did in 2019 was a protest piece in support of Black Lives Matter. Perhaps our piece will incorporate similar themes but explore them in relation to public transport.

Arts challenge plan

What steps will you have to take to achieve your challenge? I am planning to document my progress using an online blog and I am planning to do extensive related to transport in London. I also plan to visit other relevant locations and to try and include some form of transport memorabilia in our film. I will also research other things that will help our group, such as relevant music and how transport relates to the lives of Cockneys or other old-fashioned Londoners, something I take interest in.

Who or what will you need to help you? (E.g. other people, materials, resources) I will need a film camera, editing software, a large sheet of A4 on which to plan with my group and a Google Docs document with which we can keep a diary of all our ideas and chart our progress for our Arts Award. I will need the help of the transport museum organiser who is helping us, as well as Jack (a filmmaker) and Chloe (HCA) who are involved in our project. In terms of resources, I will need to look up relevant online information. I will also need to take accounts given to be me by older members of my community in the Clerkenwell area, as well as those in adjacent working-class areas like Shoreditch, Southwark and King’s Cross.

How will you arrange this? I will write an action plan which has mini-goals for my own personal research for the project, as well as goals relevant to the overall group project and also an overall target. I will also include a schedule for each day, although that will be subject to change based on the wishes of the group. I will write a schedule for myself in my own time to make sure I meet all the requirements of my Arts Award and keep track of my development as it progresses.

What targets will you set to achieve throughout your challenge and how will you show you are working towards them? Firstly, I will aim to have a movie idea which is ready to put into action and which our whole group likes and agrees upon. I will write a brief summary of this idea in this Silver Arts Award Booklet. Then I will aim with my group to put this idea into practise immediately. I will document the early stages of our filmmaking process to show this and I will write a list of the various film techniques (whether related to camerawork, plot, structuring, style, script or acting) and provide links or footnotes to the websites or books in which we found them. I will continue to chart the filmmaking process in my booklet and how our ideas changed along the way. I also aim to have a finished film, which I will show in my booklet and I aim to show this cohesive, well-structured film to an audience and will document this by writing a brief summary/memo/’manifesto’ of what the film will entail and why (and if there is a political message behind or not, and if not, the reasons why). Essentially I will detail the reasons for everything in the book and I will collect audience feedback to put on the blog I have created. The blog will be updated weekly, as well as at the end. I will make important signposts in the blog (at the beginning, halfway through and end of the project) so that a clear structure can be seen and my progress can be noted. I will use relevant images, as well as reels/clips from the film which show my developing film knowledge and teamwork.

How will you collect feedback about your arts challenge? I will collect feedback by asking the mentors and those associated with TFL what they think of our project and if it relates directly to the theme of transport. This is necessary to ensure I do not go on a tangent, as before starting this project, I was unfamiliar with the ins-and-outs of the London transport service. I will also talk to people who work for TFL to see what they think of the direction I am going in and see if they think I am being faithful to the work they do and their daily lives. Also, I am going to collect audience feedback after the screening of the film. I hope to have the opportunity to screen the early drafts of the film prior to the private screening we do for our parents, as I want to see what people and think and how I can improve. I will take notes and then write a new plan using these notes of what to do to improve my film in all aspects (e.g. camerawork, acting, dialogue, editing, scenery, colours). I will ask for specific subject-related/arts-related feedback (e.g. symbolism).

Silver Arts Award Unit 1 Part B: deliver your arts challenge

Write your arts challenge here: My arts challenge is to make a well-edited, finalised and polished film related to the theme of Transport to be screened in front of an audience of people. I need to make this film with a group of other young people and respect their ideas. I am doing it for the Holborn Community Association (HCA) in conjunction with TFL.

SIlver Arts Award Unit 1 Part C: review arts events

Where did you go? I went to two places. The first place I went to was the London transport museum in Covent Garden. Here I went on a tour of the museum in which I learnt about its history. I also went to the London Transport Museum’s Depot in Acton, which expanded on what we learnt in the Covent Garden Museum in terms of the different vehicles and designs present in its history and the characters who drove these buses, but also gave us new insight into what goes on with the Museum behind the scenes.

What did you see/do? At both events I saw old London buses, as well as trains, trams and even carriages (horse-drawn and electric) from times gone by. I asked questions about interesting people such as Isambard Kingdom Brunel and collated information on him from the LTN. In Acton, we learnt about the first black female bus driver and how groundbreaking this was. We also planned our films around transport and we came up with a movie based on a time-travelling train.

Describe which art forms were involved Film-making was involved and we were artistically inspired by the way museum was laid out, as it felt like the interesting objects were each leading on to the next one, thus pulling us through the chronologically ordered museum. We used film-making and saw the design art form used in curating the museum, as well as the Moquette of TFL (textile design). We also saw the graphic design on old TFL maps, which inspired us in making our movie poster.

Have you seen or done something like this before? What was similar to things you’ve seen or done in the past? I have previously been on a filmmaking course and this was similar, as we took inspiration from short films and learnt about plot and different types of shot. We also went on a tour of the museum of london transport, which is like the museum of london (which I have been to) in the sense that it uses the ordinary people of London to evoke a strong, living sense of London history.

Was there anything unexpected about what you saw/experienced? Yes, I was surprised by how beautiful the designs of the various TFL signs (and map booklets) were and how much thought, creativity and love went into making them. I was also surprised by the various types of seats used in the trains, as not only would they be aesthetically pleasing for a film shot, but they were also designed to look beautiful and to provide comfort for passengers, perfected over decades (their design changed very music).

What did you think was good and why? I think the tour by TFL was good, as it let me understand the design aspects better and how they related to the history of London and TFL, which I would not have been able to work out on my own, as previously I had no idea about design or how something could connect so deeply to the people of London and they transport they used. The tour of both places was interesting and brought the old vehicles to life and made me imagine the sort of people who went on them.

Is there anything about the arts event you didn’t like ? Why? I did not like that we did not get to link the design of the TFL logo, seats etc. more to how our films looked, as the design of these logos and vehicles was and is so beautiful that it would be a shame not to include these obvious sources of inspiration in our film-making process.

What have you learnt from this arts event? I have learnt that one must not forget the role of transport in making a city work. Transport functions beneath the surface (sometimes quite literally) and so those who use it can take it and maybe even its staff for granted, when in fact it has played a vital role in expanding London and creating the modern culture of our city.

What thoughts or ideas will you take away with you? I will take away with me the thought that transport can serve my local area and various modes of transport in all forms are highly beneficial to London. I will think of how hard the TFL staff work, as well those creative figures who worked on making the logos which are almost equally important in the transport service.

How will you share your review with other people, and how will you evidence this? I will include photos of the transport which I have taken and I will get feedback from other members of my group, as well as our advisors and the museum staff and I will upload all I have written, filmed and photographed etc. online on a blog run by the HCA and used by our group.

What qualities do you think a good leader needs to have? A good leader needs to be able to direct the group they are working in. Such a leader needs to able to be confident and bold at decision-making, but also should not speak over others constantly, as other members of the group may have valuable ideas. A good leader should make all members feel included and everyone should feel listened, but a leader must also make sure that all members of a group know what their roles are and that they are doing what is required (and that they know what the task is).

What leadership skills would you like to develop in your arts leadership project? I would like to be more confident in interacting with others. I want to focus on making my group work as a cohesive team. I want the team members to have a supportive relationship and for us to benefit each other with the work we do. I want to ensure my group has an overall aim for the film once the conceptualisation stage is over, rather than us all having vastly different interests, which could lead to conflict. I want our group to function as one entity and I want to have a hands-on approach in ensuring this.

Describe your arts leadership project. What are you going to do? What will the overall aims and outcome be? My leadership project is social media and marketing. That category has been essentially split in two and another group member will focus more on the technical side of this category, whereas I will focus on the marketing aspect, although this still bears relevance to social media. We have set up our own film company for making this film and I will aim to promote our social media account. I have some past experience in marketing, as I previously had an Instagram, Twitter and Facebook account which I used to promote my rap music. In this, I paid attention to viewer analytics and made sure to target a specific demographic (18-25 year olds from the UK who were fans of Grime music) and I will use these skills in the future to try and get the right target audience. I will talk to people on the street (thus developing my people skills) and target a specifically young demographic, as they will not be that much older than us. My aim will be to get as wide an audience as possible when our film is screened at a festival and I hope the outcome will be that we receive the response that our film really connects with this audience and that they feel they can relate well to it.

What resources will you need? Are there any health & safety considerations? I will need access to social media and a large sheet of paper to do a mind map on marketing on. I will also need an Excel spreadsheet and Microsoft Word. I will need sufficient time, but not much else.

Health and safety considerations are that audience members must be covid-tested and also we must make space for wheelchair users. We must also accomodate people who require dogs, such as blind people or people who have anxiety dogs, as the animals would need enough space to sit down and have somewhere where they would not bark and interrupt our film.

What will your leadership role be? What will you be responsible for doing? My role will be to market our film. I will be responsible for ensuring our film is as popular as possible and that it appears professional, but not overproduced: I want to present our film in a way that will appeal to the audience (as emotional appeals are successful in marketing) and that it will appeal to as wide a range of people as possible.

How will this develop my leadership skills? It will give me a deeper level of understanding in a field where I would like to develop my skills further. Thus, I will be able to deal with potentially stressful situations and long working hours and I will be able to direct other members of my group and be able to contact them in a businesslike fashion about their ideas and how I can market them.

Will you be working with other people? What will they be doing? How does your role relate to the roles of others? I will be working with my teammates, who will be more focused on the actual concept of the film. I will get their feedback on how effective my marketing is and I will try and also get them to make their ideas as marketable as possible to an audience. I will also be working with someone on the social media aspect of the project and I will make sure my marketing of our film and company will be relevant to his social media account and what it reflects about our film.

odd question but is there any pressure to do well in med school/law school? you have to do v good in undergrad to get in but like what about after? sure u have to pass classes but like med school/law school is stressful enough so to do well but do u have to be the top of your class to get a job? No I don't I mean the process of getting a job after is hard enough but like will people really care about your 4.0? Like u just graduated from some really hard years of intense schooling

I’m going to handball this to @lawschoolruinedme and her followers because a good majority of them are experienced practitioners and can probably tell you (on good authority) whether their grades affected their job hunt/ career progression and whether “people cared about 4.0″ (and if so, who, why, and whether their opinions were of any consequence) 

Also this is going to be very law related as I have no experience in med school. 

Here’s a thing I’ve learnt since graduating law school though: 

No one is going to give you a pat on the back for graduating law school. It is not a “free pass” to a job in the legal field or in any other field for that matter.  

Once you’re ‘in’ law school, you’re all running the same race. Everyone who got there did well in their undergrad. 

So yes, there is pressure to do well in law school. Yes it’s intense. It doesn’t help that (usually) you’re all a bunch of overachievers who are accustomed to being in the top 10% of your cohort or whatever. 

But arguably there’s a similar level of pressure that anybody who wants to do well in their chosen field of study feels. Whether it be self imposed or otherwise. 

I mean, we’ve heard the faculty specific jokes about “oh it’s ok if I don’t do well in law because hell I’ll be able to get a job in _________ anyway and beat out all those graduates” 

But whilst a law degree (esp a long one) may show commitment, a ‘high level’ and ‘excellent verbal and written communication skills’ these skills aren’t exclusive to law. And just because you do a law degree doesn’t mean you’re “better” that someone else who does. You don’t get a ‘free pass’ or get to ‘relax’ as if the law degree is somehow a safety blanket against unemployment. A law degree doesn’t entitle one to a job in another field of expertise. 

To put it bluntly, a law grad who has a credit average won’t necessarily beat out the arts grad who has a high distinction average in the job race. 

What I can say is that the pressure I felt studying my law units was... very different to the type of pressure I felt when I was completing my arts units. I mean this could be due to a range of different reasons. The people. The competitiveness. The type of study and assessment I needed to do for law units. 

But this was my brand of pressure. Like, I’d rather read 100+ pages worth of case law than, say, apply some mathematical formula to determine the base load of a bridge (can you tell I have never studied anything engineering related?). I mean, we pick our own demons, right?  

With regards to jobs, I guess it depends on what you want to do with your chosen degree. What I can say is that having good grades may be a shortcut to where you want to be. Esp if you’re doing the traditional clerkship-top tier route. 

But a lot of the job hunt comes down to intangibles - the market, someone going on maternity leave, who you know, networks, timing, sheer dumb luck. 

And that’s hard to accept in the legal job market atm (in aus anyway). 

But I honestly believe that if you sincerely want to have a certain job/ position etc you can get there. Where you start is not where you end. If you don’t want it to be. 

And it may be a longer, less glamorous road. It may be the “ten years working in community legal centres before I moved.”  But that’s ok.

Sometimes, the little diversions, well, they help you find out what the fuck you want to do. Whether it be in the law or outside of the law. And hell, having to sacrifice (time, money, whatever) sometimes means you’re more conscious of the choices you’re making. 

As you change, your career aspirations will change.

The pressure/ stress is always there though. 

The degree of such pressure/ stress? I think that’s a personal thing.
