I never meant to fall into this fandom, but seeing these really stunning pieces of characters in trench coats and got supremely curious. It took approximately two days to fall ass over teakettle into OMNISCIENT READER'S VIEWPOINT hell, because it has absolutely fascinating characters, interesting worldbuilding, a beautifully drawn webtoon, thoughtful plot elements on the nature of stories and the relationship with the audience and--most importantly--it has the kind of character dynamics you immediately want fic. I'm barely past chapter 40 and I was already spoiling myself for the overarching plot because I desperately needed post-canon fic that offered resolution, because everything was already so deliciously intense that I couldn't stand it! So, here I am, having a bunch of knock-out fic to go with the absolute god-tier art that's in the fandom and desperately trying to drag more of you into this with me because it's so good and I think you'd like it and I don't want to be throwing up feelings everywhere and not have you all understand how much these characters mean to me (especially the main character, he is such a skrunkly little asshole whomst I would die for!!!!) even after just forty chapters! i actually have so many thoughts about this jahdjkdh STRAP IN LONG POST AHEAD

first lets talk about what the 'original timeline' is. the simplest way to define it is the story written of in the original 'Ways of Survival' 3149 chapters, that happens without Kim Dokja's (or hsy's) direct influence. ergo, Secretive Plotter's 1863 regressions, but also the unrecorded history of his life as an outer god.

that leaves round's 0, alt-1863, 1864, 1865 as worlds that were directly influenced by kim dokja and part of an 'altered' timeline, and I would make the claim that they happen to a different, alt!yjh too.

if the 'original timeline' is written by 1863!hsy in the novel 'Ways of Survival', lived by the Secretive Plotter and brought to life by the Oldest Dream; then the 'altered timeline' is written by 'our' Han Sooyoung and 1864!Yoo Joonghyuk (+kimcom) in 'Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint,' lived by Kim Dokja and brought to life by us.

for me, all confusing time paradox, alternate universe stuff makes sense in the context of these two timelines.

Secretive Plotter, when he becomes an outer god and starts observing his own past regressions, mistakenly starts to believe that he can intervene in his own past because he seemingly successfully did in the 999th turn- but actually, that was the only way it could have ever gone, because that was what was written in WoS and what he had already lived. it was an exception and the only exception.

(the alt!1863 world-line was always different from his own past 1863rd regression, unlike with 999, because he would have remembered it if it had happened to him; he only decided to intervene in it bc the alt!3rd turn existed, which in turn was created because he intervened in the alt!1863 turn etc etc the end result devours the cause etc we get it)

SP knows the universe is a closed loop intellectually but he doesn't ever comprehend it fully- because he is a character, he cannot see past the fourth wall even when he learns of its existence (he very literally cant break past the Final Wall). but his story wasn't about that. as all Yoo Joonghyuks do, he wondered about the meaning of his existence, and the conclusion he eventually arrived at was that he existed for the Oldest Dream- he accepted this answer, made the oldest dream a reality and went off to live in domestic found family bliss with little kdj and 999th turns outer gods. thats the way he escapes being a 'character.' (good for him)

on the other hand 'our' yoo joonghyuk / alt!yjh is on a totally different trajectory than Secretive Plotter.

his story starts (as much as anything has a 'start' in orv...) at the end of the alt!1863 world-line when he chooses to live / regress to meet Kim Dokja. he only knows to do that because he literally sees his own story written on the Fourth Wall- hes already very locked in to the truth of the universe from the get-go. then, he sacrifices most of his memories to create that world he saw, the quote 'world-line above the Wall.' he does the impossible and escapes from being a character with his own fervent willpower.

and this YJH is the one we read about in ORV, whose fundamentally different from SP in various ways but most importantly in his...complete self-awareness of the fact he is a character in a novel, not intellectually, but like, existentally?? he is constantly not breaking the fourth wall exactly, but seeing the edges of it intruding on his experience of reality in cosmically horrifying ways (he reminds me a lot of that one tumblr post about eldritch madness).

ANYWAY WE HAVE FINALLY ARRIVED AT YOUR QUESTION JESUS THIS POST IS LONG

and to answer the second part of your question...its hard to say what SP thinks about his pre-scenarios life, but I think it might be along the same lines as every other character does. he knows he was a pro gamer, can vaugley reminisce about it, but it isnt relevent to the plot so he doesnt think about it very often. (heck, he might even assume he has parents and a childhood!)

we're all in ruin. life and death are just stories in between. lee hakhyun understands that, but he can't accept it. he's afraid of death, he doesn't like being sad, he's afraid of people disappearing, so he wants to run away. all stories end. unlike him, kim dokja has accepted this. happy or sad, this world was just a story. he read, and he's reading. for an unimaginable amount of years. is this still the kim dokja we know?

he asks. are you still the reader he knows. he doesn't know if he wants kim dokja to lie. to say he's still the protagonist of this story, that he'll solve this somehow. that they'll see the end of the scenarios together.

kim dokja doesn't answer. for some reason or another, he can't answer. there's something wrong with this snowfield. here, it feels like a fairy tale. they conversed like it was a fairy tale. in metaphors, and symbols. this snow garden was a metaphor for 'between the lines'. nothing is written down, but everything is in between. this kim dokja isn't really him. he's the 'oldest dream', scattered throughout the universe. so he must be meeting lhh through expedient. and then he says the most cryptic bs god DAMN it kdj you're making this really hard for me

and then,,,,, his companions realizing something’s wrong. han sooyoung being the first to act on this because the kim dokja she knows best is the one that isn’t here. yoo joonghyuk choosing to regress (in both this world and the 0th turn) for that sliver of a chance that he’ll see kdj again. and the fact that kdj doesn’t consider even once that this might happen, that his companions would realize something was different. and this isn’t even something new! in all the times he sacrifices himself, he fails to truly acknowledge how much it affects the ones he cares about. he doesn’t comprehend (or is unwilling to comprehend) how much he is loved. his happily ever after doesn’t even include him, not fully — and i don’t think he believes he’s deserving of that happily ever after, either. he’s a reader. he doesn’t realize that this is his own story, too. goddddd i hate this book SO much (<- lying)

The current Yoo Joonghyuk would never hesitate for the sake of his purpose.' - see, this is a much more nuanced and empathetic description than 'lost his humanity' in the webtoon translation. like killing people for your own purposes is not just as human a thing to do as choosing to save other people. it always struck me as a particularly harsh way to word yjh's personality change, esp. when yjh is kdj's blorbo and kdj knows how yjh got to this point.....i think the webtoon in general tries to flatten kdj's low and high points to make him more plateable for a wider audience, which i noticed when comparing scenes side by side for my fic. which is exactly why i prefer reading the source material of stories over any adaptation - things get lost in the medium translation even with the best adaptations.

kdj specifically calls yjh a professional gamer. which is good because i literally can't see yjh streaming to any audience pre-scenarios except maybe for contract-mandated team streams. he can't perform on command and doesn't give a shit about entertaining anyone except maybe his family. bad karoke aside lol

oh my god. so so true. the last one got me thinking about kdj treating people as characters and im. going insane about it

bc like. its pretty early on when kdj realizes his skills make a distinction between "people" and "characters". and not only does he not think very hard about it, he mainly just gets frustrated because he cant "read" people who arent characters. and then he keeps treating people like characters for a LONG time. analyzing their strengths and weaknesses and personality traits and using them strategically. (like the scene where he gets his companions to cheer up lhs so he can evolve?? yeah.) he relies heavily on the fourth wall and even thinks of himself as an outside observer manipulating the story. (insert reader/constellation parallel and just how quickly he became a constellation?? anyway)

and like, at first you probably wont notice, or youll even be on his side! after all, he seems to have a particular ending he wants to see, and you want him to see it! but as the story goes on, you realize more and more that these people genuinely care about him, and hes separating himself from them because its easier. and THEY notice too, but no matter how much they ask him to trust them, he never does. he cant. he remains in denial about it, i think until he eats the fruit of good and evil? pretty sure thats when he starts to realize what hes doing, but he still doesnt really acknowledge it until the confrontation with yjh.

and the fact that this is explored with yjh is SO GOOD. because like op said, yjh trusts kdj so much at this point that he doesnt really share his companions insecurities. hes just like "yeah we're companions. partners. equals. rip to you but im different." so for him to realize that kdjs "trust" in him was all fabricated..... of course hes pissed! who wouldnt be?? meanwhile kdj is still trying to convince himself hes not a bad person for using people, when the person hes used the most, who never even doubted that they were genuine partners, who just got the betrayal of 1865 lifetimes, confronts him.

and he cant deny it anymore. i dont remember the confrontation scene very well, but doesnt omniscient readers viewpoint stop working entirely?? all i remember is the visceral reaction i had when kdj was shown concrete evidence that he didnt actually know yjh at all. cause like, from the moment they first laid eyes on each other, not only kdj but the fourth wall itself tells you that kdj knows everything about yjh. its a fundamental truth to kdj. so to have that ripped out from under him..... THATS what makes him reassess his perspective. he realizes he needs to learn how to genuinely connect with people instead of just collecting information on them, and that theres more to a person than what "character list" can tell him.

and he starts off with introducing himself to yjh...... god. its so so good. the fact that kdjs most pivotal character moment would be impossible without yjh..... and vice versa with 1863!yjh...... yeah. yeah

-hetalia 4/10 this fandom is seriously fucked up now that i look at it but i had lots of fun there when i was 12. Still better than country humans

-warrior cats 7/10 stopped reading the books a while ago because they just weren't it anymore but maybe it's just that i got older. The only fandom I've ever wrote fanfiction for. A lot of great memories mostly from 2018-2020. Interacted with people mostly on Wattpad. Probably wouldn't go back but no regrets

-dreamsmp 4/10 conflicted because I cringe so bad when i remember how i used to act in early 2020 but then I've met SO many cool people on a Minecraft youtube discord server. I was never really into dnf (I've only read some fanfics)

-gacha life music videos and mini movies 6/10 oh god. Never made content, just watched it. This and warrior cats animations sort of created my music taste so. Aside from the weird wolf/angel hybrid princess OCs and gacha heat it was actually decent. I still watch gacha react from time to time 😢

-animation memes(2017-19) 7/10 I'm not a furry guys i swear. Tried making my own and i think looking at them now would cause me a cardiac arrest but back then i thought they were the shit. I even bought flipaclip premium and joined warriors m.a.ps.

-backrooms 8/10 does this qualify for a fandom? I hope so. Joined the reddit but i wasn't very active. I still take backroom-core photos sometimes but that's it

-marauders 9/10 currently in it. Never read Harry Potter (I've only seen the movies). I just read jegulus fanfiction and vibe.

-genshin 7/10 I've played genshin once(1) and I'm not looking forward to doing that again but i really like the characters. I don't know much of the lore so i mostly just read one shot fanfics of my favorite ships

-miss peregrine's home for peculiar children 6/10 i have been trying to finish this series since like 2 years but i just can't bring myself to do it, I'm stuck on book 2. Again like the characters and most of the story but i don't like how the author uses pictures instead of describing stuff. The fandom seems really small and half dead but i admire their passion to fight whoever thinks the movie is better
