i really want to dress up my dolls in halloween costumes, but i can never decide for the girls that don’t have “canon” costumes what they would want to dress up in and what would be (at least somewhat) historically accurate for the time. 😅

The 2023 American Girl Doll of the Year is Kavi Sharma, a South Asian American theatre kid who loves Wicked SO SHE HAS A REPLICA ELPHABA COSTUME. I am absolutely ecstatic that kids get this.

Week Two of Spring Has Sprung 2024: Theater!

"Popular--you're gonna be popular!" 🎶

"Oh Miss Elphaba--you're beautiful!" 🩷💚

Kavi (daughter of Elphaba and Glinda) and Callie (niece/adopted daughter of Zeb and Kallus) met in theater class when Callie first moved to San Fransokyo to live with her uncles and cousins. After a rough outing by a teacher/coming out to her mom which led to her uncles taking custody of her, and moving all the way across the country from her birth state of Florida to California, starting a new school in the middle of the school year was just another big change Callie wasn't sure she was ready for. But almost as soon as walked into theatre class she made friends with Kavi, bonding over their love of Wicked and musicals in general! (Kavi's moms met playing Glinda and The Wicked Witch in a Broadway production of The Wizard of Oz, so she grew up in a very musical household!)

They both dream of playing Glinda and Elphaba together someday (Callie wants to be the first trans Glinda, and they both think there should be a version where Elphaba and Glinda end to together), and they love dressing up and singing the songs--they even plan to perform "Popular" at their school's musical showcase!

When they're not getting ready for their next show, they like hanging out at each other's houses and listening to musical soundtracks, or going on dates to get boba tea at the Lucky Cat Cafe! 🧋

This is the dress I made for Kavi when she goes to see Wicked on Broadway. I wanted to keep it modest, so there’s no skin showing from neck to knee, though the green is meant to simulate Elphaba’s skin color.

The black is very very stretchy knit, and the green is from a t-shirt sleeve. I layered black tulle over the shoulder/upper bodice pieces to give it a little sparkle. Overall, it’s a pretty comfortable seeming dress. It has a circle skirt, which can flare out if she twirls, which is always a bonus. I used a modified version of the IRL Dress by Dollhouse Designs for the pattern.

I’m tempted to add black and white striped leggings and red slippers as a nod to the 1939 movie, even though that was the Witch of the East, Elphaba’s sister, who wore them. 

My recollections of Wicked may differ from those who know the musical because I’ve never seen it, but I read the book.

what does "Disneybounding to Wicked" mean? sorry i'm old or out of touch with slang

So. When you go to the Disney parks, if you're over the age of 10 you're not allowed to wear replica costumes of the characters in case other kids get confused. So what Disney fans do is they will wear outfits inspired by the characters; like, blue t-shirt, red jacket, yellow pants = snow white.

Kavi and her friends are going to see Wicked and they talk about wearing pink and green to represent Glinda and Elphaba

American Girl didn't give us Kavi's Elphaba dress from her journal so I made one! 💚

And I added a hair bauble that made me think of Glinda! (I literally got it off a chocolate box when I was in elementary school and I never threw it away, it has survived MANY moves and now it finally had a use--this is what makes it hard for me to throw anything away XD)

I decided that she is the daughter of Elphaba and Glinda in my San Fransokyo AU--she's in theater with Callie and ends up being one of her partners! (Now I just need to get Aspen and the theater kids polycule will be complete! :D)
