questions for conditioned characters
A) do they know what conditioning is? B) do they understand that they've been conditioned? C) how does this understanding, or lack thereof, affect their perception of themselves?
#asking for my own curiosity really#whump prompt#oc prompt#conditioned whumpee#whump scenario#whump#my prompts#i can answer this for delta#delta definitely knows what conditioning is and could give you a point by point rundown of the different kinds and how they work in psych#but he can not put two and two together when it comes to how he himself has been conditioned. at least not for a very long time.#delta achieves a surprising amount of awareness about the realities of his own situation. but his own abuse is one of the#last things he ever questions. its just so integral to his life he cant comprehend that its wrong.

You know what, fuck it, I have to speak my truth! (this is gonna be a rant, so anyone who actually likes assassin's creed revelations and/or the secret crusade, be warned or maybe don't read this at all)
remember how altaïr talks to king richard at the end of ac1, and richard is like "[humans] come into the world kicking and screaming, violent and unstable. it is what we are. we cannot help ourselves."? and how altaïr answers "no. we are what we choose to be." and how that ACTUALLY has meaning bc he himself was "violent and unstable" at the beginning of the game but he has learned and is now CHOOSING to be a better person who cares about others and humanity at large? remember how his calmness and gentleness was something that he ACQUIRED over the course of the story?
and remember how in revelations they then suddenly had a PRE-AC1 altaïr say about the first of his targets "no man should pass from this world without knowing some kindness." and be all wise and calm and collected during a nice little chat with al mualim, who suddenly acts all fatherly? (like, this is suddenly supposed to be a positive relationship? what??)
also, during the confession the target says to altair: "you put too much faith in the hearts of men, altaïr. [...] humans are weak, base, and petty." and altaïr answers: "no. our creed is evidence to the contrary." KJASJFJDKL???? like, it’s almost insulting how close this exchange is to the one with richard. you know, the one that was actually earned after a whole game of character development. like WTF??? cool congrats now that development means nothing. like, apparently that was just altaïr reverting BACK to being the exemplary assassin who understands and believes in the creed that he was apparently just born as. (i also hate how having a young inexperienced altaïr saying this implies that altaïr's faith in humanity is a sign of naivete instead of a sign of the wisdom he has gained after being confronted with counter arguments for a whole game, and also something that distinguishes the assassins from the templars who use humanity's supposed wickedness to justify controlling them like in AC1, but whatever)
altaïr’s development in AC1 mattered BECAUSE he is not NATURALLY a good person, it actually said something about humanity's capacity for both bad AND good and how humans don't have to be forced to be good through mind control bc they can by their own free will choose to be better when taught how and when allowed the freedom to grow. but no. apparently altaïr has just always been calm, wise and gentle. and he just sort of forgot about that during AC1 bc…. ? bc of adha?? bc of abbas???
oh don’t get me started on the whole abbas thing. (it doesnt even make sense that abbas is so hung up about his father and "his family’s honor", like what about the whole point of al mualim not allowing parents to be close to their children bc it would make them weak? like, my dude, you’re not supposed to HAVE any family aside from the brotherhood)
they used the throwaway character that had like 5 lines and made him into altaïr’s main antagonist in revelations… like, abbas wasn’t supposed to be this ONE dude who had personal beef with altaïr, he was just supposed to show how while altaïr’s revered by many, a lot of his brothers also hate him, bc 1) altaïr is a shitty person at this point and 2) bc there’s no real feeling of community and family in this version of the brotherhood, but just a pervasive sense of competition and jealousy — these assassins don’t care about their goal of safeguarding humanity bc they’re too hung up on petty squabbles and divided by rivalries (you know, the things that made malik hate altaïr even before solomon’s temple and that he overcomes in the end which enables him to forgive and to reconcile with altaïr so they can work together and stop al mualim? (you ever just think about "we are one. as we share the glory of our victories, so too should we share the pain of our defeat. in this way we grow closer. we grow stronger." and cry? bc i do. all the time. malik, the man that you are))
and now abbas is altaïr’s childhood best friend turned lifelong enemy?? like, bowden bent over backwards to come up with an explanation for why altaïr is an arrogant ass at the beginning of AC1, when the explanation is right there: he was raised to kill without asking questions and was constantly praised for how good he is at murder, which resulted in him becoming arrogant and disregarding human life. like, it doesn’t have to be some shakespearean family feud type shit. and guess what, this "simple" explanation actually plays into the story’s themes, who’da thunk!
(like, abbas might not have been a "fleshed out" character in AC1, but he had a specific function and now that function is gone. mr bowden, mr mcdevitt, you know characters are allowed to simply exist to tell us something about their worlds and the systems they live in and sometimes that’s more important and also more interesting than having every single character have a detailed backstory to explain all their behaviors, right?)
with all of this revelations loses all nuance in regards to the levantine brotherhood and also the creed in general. like, altaïr being a master assassin at the beginning despite being a terrible person and not actually understanding the creed is a criticism of the brotherhood and the creed itself. like, it said something about the order that someone like altaïr was able to get that high in rank, simply bc he's good at killing, which also tells us what is considered important in the al mualim era assassin order. when you make altaïr’s arrogance the result of his personal conflicts instead of how we was raised by a brotherhood that only valued one's ability to kill, you lose that characterization of the assassin order itself!
and by suddenly making al mualim a semi good "father figure" you also downplay his manipulation of not only altaïr but all those under his care. (altaïr says something about al mualim being "as a father" to him exactly twice in the codex, but he doesn’t mean by that that he WAS a father to him, what he means is that he was the CLOSEST THING he had bc HE DID NOT HAVE PARENTS, not because his mother died in childbirth and his father was executed when he was young btw, BUT BECAUSE IT WASN’T ALLOWED, like his parents actually lived but weren’t allowed to be close to him, he says he came to view al mualim’s "weak and dishonest" love as enough and even better BECAUSE HE HAD NOTHING ELSE, BECAUSE AL MUALIM ISOLATED HIS ASSASSINS FROM THEIR FAMILIES. al mualim "loved" him bc he was good at killing people for him! hm, i wonder if this could be trying to say anything about cults and indoctrination and the inherent contradiction in fighting for peace and free will by taking children away from their parents and raising them to become killers?? like, altaïr wasn't ~the special orphan boy~ taken in by al mualim bc his father died a hero's death, it was "the way of the order" to have al mualim be the closest thing to a parental figure for everyone to ensure absolute loyalty! altaïr saying al mualim was like his father is not supposed to make you go "oh, he must have actually been a good guy for altaïr to consider him a father", it should make you go "oh that's kinda fucked up that he considers the dude who made him into a killing machine and who manipulated him a sort of father figure"!)
and then in revelations they suddenly portray that relationship as positive and healthy??? like, it would be one thing to give it some nuance by delving into the psychology behind al mualim’s "love" and maybe showing how al mualim did care about altair in a complicated, fraught sort of way (like, you know, there’s a lot of interesting things you could say about al mualim at several points addressing altaïr as "my child" in AC1 and how that parallels Garnier referring to the people he drugged and abused as his "children", and what that says about how the templars view the people who they say they want to save and in whose best interests they supposedly act (in any case, al mualim doesn’t use that phrase because he has any real parental feelings but rather to patronize and to invalidate any objections, like in a "mother knows best" way))
but they even fucking DARE to parallel that relationship with that of altaïr and darim in revelations, by having the reflection in the puddle of darim hugging altaïr showing altaïr hugging al mualim…. like their relationship wasn’t inherently abusive but just tragically cut short because al mualim was just "corrupted by the apple"… like WHAT???? so it’s not the very real problems like grooming, manipulation and indoctrination and the hierarchical structure of the brotherhood itself (all of which are antithetical to the assassin ideology), it was just the evil apple all along. great. that’s DEFINITELY a lot more interesting.
god im sorry i really dont want to spread negativity but this is driving me INSANE. like, somebody please tell me im not crazy bc i feel like somehow most of the fandom is in agreement that revelations and the secret crusade have better storytelling and characterization than ac1.
SPEAKING OF WHICH, can we talk about how, even IF we completely ignore AC1 and treat revelations altaïr as his own character…. the narrative still doesn’t really work?
basically, the whole point of his story in rev is that "he gave his whole life to the brotherhood", this obsession led to him not using his time with his family which has him ending up dying alone in a dark library and this in turn makes ezio reevaluate his life choices…. except. he doesn’t? neglect? his family? or whatever? like, his devotion to the assassins is sort of painted as this tragic flaw that leads to a lonely death bc it supposedly comes at the cost of his family, but… his wife has joined the assassins, (at least) one of his sons is in the brotherhood and even when he goes to protect the assassins against the mongols, he takes his family with him (except for the son who stays behind bc he has a family of his own and who, ironically, ends up dying bc of that)… like, you can’t describe altaïr as a good husband and father in the database and have his son tell him that "everything that is good in me began with you, father" when they say goodbye, and then want to make us believe that he put his family behind the brotherhood and that that is a character flaw that leads to his tragedy.
because you HAVE to have a character’s tragedy be the result of a character flaw. like. that is how tragedies work. otherwise it just becomes tragedy for the sake of tragedy which is… boring bc it has no purpose. and we know it is SUPPOSED to have purpose bc ezIO FUCKING QUITS BEING AN ASSASSIN AFTER WITNESSING IT!
it’s like they want to have their cake and eat it, too — they didn’t want to actually make altaïr a bad husband/father, but still wanted to make his life a tragedy where he loses his family which is why instead they outsource all responsibility to abbas who now has to be the reason for ALL the deaths.
like, they try to make at least maria’s death kind of sort of the result of altaïr’s rashness or whatever but like… these guys KILLED THEIR SON and TOLD HIM THAT ALTAÏR HAD ORDERED HIS DEATH. like, altaïr losing it in response to that is not rash, it’s fucking logical and justified! if anything the scene made me angry at maria for trying to stop him. like, GIRL, he was YOUR son too??? but god forbid we give female characters actual real emotions, she has to fill the role of "voice of reason who dies for altaïr’s man pain" i fucking guess.
like, it’s this weird mix where his tragedy is simultaneously painted as his own fault but also not really bc abbas is the one responsible for all the shit that happens. it just… it just doesn’t really go together.
the only way to make his story make sense narratively and to give it actual purpose is by looking at it in the context of ezio’s story, bc the things he sees in altaïr’s memories are supposed to be a revelation (ha!) to ezio specifically. and i guess that’s maybe the crux of it all — altaïr’s story in revelations was conceived of first and foremost to support ezio’s story and development. which is probably also why many people maybe don’t notice bc, having skipped ac1 and started with ac2, the majority of people mostly care only about ezio and only really appreciate altaïr’s story in as far as it serves to push ezio forward. (tho i’ve also seen a few people say that ezio is also written kind of weird in rev, but i’ve never really been an ezio girly myself so i can’t speak to the truth of that)
like, altaïr dying alone in the library doesn’t really have to make sense for his character, i guess, bc it’s only really supposed to be a cautionary tale for ezio.
so, i guess, for once, they actually had a MAN dying for another man’s character development, which is pretty woke actually. ubisoft, i take everything back jksdsfjhgdsahfhsdhfghfdsgjhsdgjh
#assassins creed#ac1#altair ibn la'ahad#malik al-sayf#ezio auditore#asscreed#rant#long post#this is killing me#i even started rereading the secret crusade bc i thought maybe i remember it being worse than it is#but honestly its the opposite#even just the fact that in the secret crusade altair always says some last sentence after his targets' confessions#has me so irrationally angry aksjdfh#like over sibrands body he says something like 'may death be merciful' or something#like? did they want that to be like requiescat in pace or something???#like aside from the fact that altair WOULD NOT FUCKING SAY THESE THINGS#it also just destroys the tension built up by the target's last words#like... i do think it was very much on purpose that the target always had the last word in the confessions#sigh whatever its just a stupid video game from over 15 years ago who cares#(me. i care. unfortunately. i wish i didn't. send help please.)#also the fact that bowden just completely fucked up arabic naming conventions with the whole “umar/darim ibn la'ahad” thing#(which is kind of an achievement considering that wasn't too great in ac1 to begin with)#tho bc of that they kind of inadvertantly ended up implying that roshan is altairs ancestor which i actually kind of like lol#anyways sorry for this giant wall of text#this is probably (definitely) the longest post i've ever made lmsadjf#but i do think i've gotten most of it off my chest.... maybe#maybe ill add stuff if i come across something else that makes me angry lol#sorry i know i promised an essay and instead delivered a rant#i just dont think i have the capacity to actually structure my thoughts any better kajdsf

Needing a Sua perspective from the ALNST auditions to Round 1. I never put much thought into what happens to the cast post-Anakt Garden graduation (do they immediately go to the auditions? Is there a period of time where they dont see each other until they recognize each other at the audition? Theres a considerable amount of time between the auditions and their Alien Stage season, did they see each other often between then or...? etc.), but regardless, imagine being her and having to choose between sabotaging your own audition so you dont have to go the the Sing, Win, or Die Show or putting your in your all in hopes of winning and spending just a bit more time with this girl you love because you know itll likely be the last time you see her. Imagine...
#dee p thoughts#alien stage#alnst#vivinos#like. not as if life wouldve been sunshine and rainbows if sua failed the audition and never went on alien stage hashtag Im a Pet to Aliens#but like. sua was definitely more in the know. Im not the type to believe mizi was completely naive but I think mizi may have bought into#the idea that dying Wasnt That Bad due to what she was taught and her trust in her owners...until round 1- maybe mizi was confident she'd#truly win and/or her owners praised and made her feel so. sua: ''My dream is Mizi's dream. (paraphrased)'' etc etc#maybe it was the dream of mizi's owners that mizi wanted to fulfill or mizi just wanted to impress her owners in return for their care...#but sua knew. she knew it would either be she never sees mizi again whether she dies or achieve such fame that sua could never reach her...#or sua can spend a little time with her. whatever they have left. whether it was her or mizi the likelihood of them ever seeing each other#again... because mizi is intent on this. she is going to join alien stage. she is going to pass the auditions because she is so dazzling.#...I need to be with her.#I think considering the ivan and sua comic anakt garden may be a pipeline to alien stage? its functionally a music school iirc so I think i#at least gives them a leg up and humans are put into anakt garden with at least some intention of having them try out for alien stage-#but nonetheless I imagine there was a liminal space where none of the cast really knew where their lives were going post-anakt garden.#not that they have much choice in the matter but still dalkjdalkbn- that liminal space mustve been a dark time for majority of them#because well. their owners. and they couldnt meet each other and may never meet again...#regarding the time between the auditions and their alien stage season I imagine its funnily a lot of. training. pr vocals visuals...#they have autographs despite them all potentially dying quickly they had them draft and practice and perfect autographs guys adjlkbnadlfkjf#the look mizi and sua shared in sweet dream when they both passed the auditions together...AUGH.....

wip wednesday
In the drifting silence of his empty apartment, Shen Wei presses the door shut, turns the lock. And then, like his body was waiting until he was alone, his legs give out. Shen Wei tips/topples against/into the wall, sinks down to sitting on the front mat/in the entryway. He sits there for a long time, curled into himself with his arms around his knees. The whole time, his body braced for the sound of Zhao Yunlan’s door opening, the sound of footsteps crossing the hall. Waiting, again, for Kunlun to return to him. But no sound comes from outside his door. At last, Shen Wei tips his head back against the wall, lets out a soft, streaming sigh. The sound trembles in the still air. It’s the closest he’s come to crying in years, that he can remember.
from the up draft of the answer fic. im cutting it veryyyyyy close to the deadline this time ahahaha (nervous!) but the writing is going relatively smoothly (knocks on wood) and i think it'll turn out pretty delicious!!
#weilan#shen wei#guardian#my fic#guardian bonus bingo 2024 prompt 5#wip wednesday#three days ................................. *cries a little bit*#its ok shockingly this feels ... doable. i also did structure this fic to be VERY striaghtforward for me:#sw pov / not much worldbuilding or plot / lots of flashback + canon constraints / no new characters / canon weilan#which IS a skill i wanted specifically to work on through guardian bingo this year so i'm quite happy with this!#i was thinking about this yesterday and in december 2023 it took me about a month to write 'the beginning of devotion' (roughly 3.8k)#and now it will be taking me about a week and a half to write this guy (roughly 3.2k)#without having to sacrifice process very much! i'm starting to learn where i can cut corners which is hehe. awesome#achieved at the expense of. much shrieking and interruption of various necessary rhythms of life haha. but. kind of cool to me#i might do a reflection post about how i think my process has changed this year bc it's definitely different (at least a little) than dec'2#it feels like. yknow. like i've figured out how to do the basic steps and now i'm adding flourishes and stuff#ok enough rambling lol if u've read this far i salute you

Maybe bordering on parasocial but dear god the way that you talk about meatz truly, no joke, gives me so much hope for my future love. I’ve always loved more than my partners, been more sappy and more sentimental and felt more deeply, but the way you talk about loving them makes me hopeful that someday someone will describe me the same way and love me as deeply as you love them ☺️ lots of love for you two :))))
It’s honestly overwhelming at times how much we care about each other. I’m very lucky to have someone that inspires me to love them more every day and it’s overwhelming to process just how much I want to share my life with them. I think from the very beginning of us starting to get to know each other better knew how badly we could fall for each other. I fell in love with how they looked at me and how they cared for themselves and the world and how they inspired me to be a better person to match them. The way they love is so complete and caring and addicting and it’s something I chase every day, to be worthy of their love and the person they want to give it to. It’s absolutely crazy that I met someone I want to align myself so completely with on nsfw tumblr almost 5 years ago and even crazier that we’re two years into our crazy relationship this week.
#asked and answered#anon#feel like i got distracted by getting to talk about how much i love meatz instead of answering your question buttttt uhhh yeah#theyre incredible#to be loved by them is such an incredible feeling and experience i never want to let it go (or share it with anyone)#i could go on for hours about how they make me feel and the things they do for me and the things they do apart from me snd the way they are#i admire them in so many ways#but djjdjdjej offtrack again#yeah! our love is something im proud of#i think you can definitely find it !#mismatched levels of care and love in a relationship is a really hard thing#but i do think finding someone that matches your level is important#and its definitely achievable !#just grab onto it when you find it !

#fnaf#for the animatronic girlies (i know im mutuals with a few)#happy you guys got your movie#it was fun :))#was definitely for the fans and just the fans which i think is why its not really hitting with any other audience#but thats okay because its not really for them#it had a goal of being a labour of love for the fans and just from what i know through osmosis#i think it achieved it

ok. going for round 2.5 of isat instead of doing anything else on the completely normal and uneventful days that are today and tomorrow + however long this takes to accomplish. objectives:
get epilogue part i missed
hit max level with everyone (is there a difference in the event dialogue depending on which act this happens in??)
spend wayyy more time doing things in act 2 bc its too easy to speed thru it and miss stuff that might be different. like im talking ALL of the side quests possible and interact w Everything. apologies in advance to siffrin for this we are hitting loop amounts that should be unthinkable
interact with the leaf while in the room w the globe specifically. not sure if it does anything but i wanna check
sus achievement. need
figure out how to unlock that one house in town w an openphrase?? if possible?? surely theres a way to do that. right
do that mini quest w the bonding earrings pair bc i couldnt find who the other person was for the life of me . need to check epilogue
get all loop conversations ?
keep save of every act for future reference
collect and keep ALL souveniers during the last bit until the end . ive seen what they all do beforehand but some get used up so thats very missable
find the last equipment ?? where could that even be
whatever the rest of the achievements are that i dont know how to unlock. hopefully along the way <3
#i think i know how to do most of this. i think. probably#no idea what most of the hidden game achievements are tho..#maybe ill hit em by accident#isat#this is just me making sure i remember what im doing for this playthrough . but really does the dialogue for that event change at all#i would think so but do i really wanna get them to that level so early in the game without that one memory....#either way thats definitely an act 4ish thing. i cant remember if getting that memory is when u enter act 4 or not#sure as hell would be funny to try it in act 2 tho ..#actually is there a way to open that one house. dont tell me how just tell me if there is bc im genuinely unsure#the current lack of guides makes this a bit rough but its fun to find things on my own :3

Being really passionately into your own genderbend au is all fun and games until someone has a different completely harmless headcanon about something you happened to have an extremely strong-set belief in and oh no it appears i have written a small essay in my tags on marik ishtar gender identity. How did that get there
#its my blog so im going on a rant in my tags#i kind of disagree with the automatic assumption that marik should be butch in any given genderbend au#for multiple reasons#the first one that comes to mind is where the stereotype probably came from which is that marik shows a strong interest in motorcycles#which are in wlw circles typically associated with butches#but i think it does a real dishonor to the idea that if you like “boy things” like motor vehicles or having muscles or whatever#that you automatically then have to assume a masculine role even inside of relationships that are supposed to not be constrained by norms#i really do think someone can enjoy driving a fucking. machine. and not automatically have to practice a very specific form of masculinity#this then brings me to the next point which is the assumption of canon male marik = feminine and breaking away from his masculine#role in the strict patriarchy of the tombkeepers : then genderbend female marik must = masculine to achieve the same effect#and I think that ignores quite a few things namely the part where in canon marik Does Not consider his behavior at all overtly feminine#being 'pretty' was considered normal and incredibly desirable by both sexes in ancient egypt and there was no gender associated with makeup#or showing off large amounts of skin like a crop top would or certain colors such as purple (which was really more associated with royalty#and would definitely fit with mariks tendency to show off his wealth possibly due to growing up with very little access to luxuries)#which brings me to my NEXT point which is that mariks appearance is more about glamour and what is most advantageous for them#which in the case of marik being a woman would probably fit with her fitting modern-day feminine style and behavior#in particular a femme fatale type role in the context of the story as someone who (at least in traditional noir) might have sympathetic#backstory or motives but is still cruel to others and has selfish desires that she attains with a carefully crafted appearance and persona#also stone femme marik is cool. idgaf.#consider this your femme lesbian marik propaganda for the day#yes i am putting this in the main tags. Because i think the world deserves to see it#marik ishtar#yugioh#my stuff#genderbend

i don't believe in the fandom concept of problematic faves (all characters should have at least one Problem, i think, for flavor) but if i did, fiona pitch would have a permanent throne at the very top of my list. i just think she's neato-cheetos.
#on a scale from one to belittling a teenager who was just subjected to weeks of solitary confinement starvation torture#i think that fiona is a 10.5 and should consider prozac#rainbow has a way with multifaceted characters who do things because it's the only thing they know how to do#good things for bad reasons and bad things for good reasons and selfless things for spiteful reasons and vise versa etc#everyone is at least a bit of an asshole about something. even goodboy milk chap boyscout simon killed a bunch of vampires on sight#they were probably up to something shady but the likelihood that they were gonna kill those girls in broad daylight at a crowded renfaire?#probably pretty low. too late to un-kill 'em though. like. those were People. vampires are People. goblins too.#imagine you're a goblin looking to make some serious changes in your society and the only thing you have to do to achieve those goals?#is kill a fifth grader that already hates you and your entire species on principle and would definitely kill you first given the chance#some of those goblins were probably pretty power hungry assholes but i imagine if they have a monarchy they also have tax laws and shit#i couldn't kill a fascist cub-scout for free healthcare but i'm also very anti-murder in general and goblins seem quite pro#i am definitely thinking way too far into this but that's also my One SkillTM#the incredibly similar way that simon and fiona view 'dark' magickal creatures (and what it means about the entire WoM) is an essay itself#its also a LONG essay and i'm too much of a weenie to post in-depth fandom opinions more controversial than 'big teeth Hot'#so the gist of it is 'I JUST THINK THEY'RE ALL NEAT I LIKED THE BOOK A LOT'#del/lat

What’s your favorite Bruce Wayne quote?
OH. I absolutely love " men are still good. We fight, we kill, we betray one another. But we can rebuild. We can do better. We will. We have to"
#its my favourite because heres the thing -- i don't have a definitive belief in permanent good. the end goal for everything should be#fixing problems long term. so others won't have to deal with them. and i see that. but we're achieving that rn despite adversity#we can change people but we can't change the inherent truth that there IS immortal bad in the world#but im comforted by the thought that we don't have to. you don't have control over evil but you have control over goodness#you have to choose goodness again and again. you have to persist.#asks

The Stone Sky - N.K. Jemisin (Broken Earth #3)
4.5/5 - at times too cerebral for my tastes; very fitting pyhrric victory; the mother-daughter relationship in this book makes me SICK. I'm obsessed.
MAJOR SPOILERS BELOW!!!
In an effort to keep this a bit more concise and to the point than my review for The Obelisk Gate, I'm structuring this review into three main sections:
Worldbuilding
Pacing & The Ending
Essun, Nassun, & their relationship
Worldbuilding
I deeply love that Jemisin devotes so much time to making sure that the worldbuilding here reflects on a (sub)textual level the point she's trying to convey regarding race, oppression, and the consequences of othering people. It's rich and allows for a really nuanced exploration into what it means to consider people subhuman, what that does to their psyche, and what that exposes about that society. The section about the "Briar Patch" is ... particularly horrifying. A match to the scene in The Fifth Season with the node maintainer in terms of sheer banal evil.
I do feel, however, that sometimes the commitment to this description and this worldbuilding on every page interfered with getting to know some of the characters. Obviously Essun, Nassun, Schaffa, etc. are very well-developed, but characters like Tonkee, Ykka, and Lerna felt very one-note at times. Since our main characters are in their own heads so much, it doesn't really feel like we really get to know anyone else - though that could be a narrative technique given Essun's tendency to misunderstand or underestimate her relationships with others. Either way, I personally wanted to see a little bit more interaction between everyone.
Pacing & The Ending
At times, the book dragged for me. I think this may be because I felt some scenes with Schaffa and Nassun were somewhat repetitive, but I understand the need to keep them in. They each show something different and unique and horrifying, to be perfectly honest, about their relationship and Nassun's underlying traumas.
The ending, however, was everything I could ask for. It's felt all along like Essun wouldn't survive this, but through books one and two, I had imagined more of a go-down-swinging type of exit. This one was, frankly, all the more heartbreaking. She loved her daughter more than she loved humanity, more than she loved herself.
And what a blow for Nassun. To be orphaned twice over, basically, and to have a hand in the death of each of your parental figures makes my heart ache for her. She's so young to have experienced the world like this. It's especially tragic and fitting, as far as endings go, that she loses her orogeny at the end of the series. It's not a stretch to say that Nassun literally lost everyone who ever loved her and a part of herself she loved (and an arm!). What ultimately brought her the most happiness was also the seeds of her own personal tragedy.
Essun, Nassun, & their relationship
Few things have made me more sick, angry, and deeply conflicted than the twisted ties between Nassun, Essun, & Schaffa. How tragic to be so traumatized by even the attempt to live a normal life that you inflict the same pain upon your child. That your abuser can recognize your actions as wrong. That there's no way you could have known any different!
That said, Essun being afraid of her daughter and understanding that she is afraid of Nassun because Nassun is just like her was, again, deeply sad and frustrating on my part. It was understandable, because even as Essun has attempted to accept the whole of her life, who she is, and what she's done, good and bad, she hasn't really forgiven herself for it. She hasn't forgiven herself for being born powerful and stubborn and ambitious and seeing those traits reflected back in her daughter made her frightened!
From Nassun's point of view, for her to know, but not quite understand, that Schaffa had a hand in making Essun who she was and is, made me as the reader miserable. Schaffa is treating her better than many of the adult figures in her life. But he's also grooming her into a weird, toxic, codependent relationship that only serves to confirm Nassun's impression of her mother as someone who doesn't (or can't) love her when Schaffa is literally the reason that Essun acts and parents the way that she does. It goes round in circles and makes me sick and ill and I will be thinking about this for the foreseeable future I fear.
Overall - an excellent book and an excellent series that I would recommend to anyone who enjoys a dense high fantasy or science fiction story. It packs a punch!
#i think this was actually longer than my last one but its definitely more coherent so like. you win some you lose some#anyway Nassun character of all time. Schaffa you didn't die painfully enough i fear#also essun deciding in the last 10 pages of the book as a character that's been fighting and surviving her whole life to give up so#her daughter can achieve her goals and be happy (whatever that may mean) was everything to me and it did make me sob violently#the stone sky#nk jemisin#fantasy#queer#book review#speculative fiction#bookworm#books#bookblr#books and reading#booklr#fiction

Glancing at the Qian Jin-Xiao Li duo then at the Lu Guang-Cheng Xiaoshi one and realising that from what we know Qian Jin was originally the by-the-book type and even now is incredibly careful and thorough. Meanwhile, Xiao Li went along with the photo shop trio despite knowing how unbelievable it all seemed and was willing to arrange Lu Guang's safety in a less traditional way
Qian Jin especially in the past is much more aligned with Lu Guang personality-wise whilst the more flexible and intuition-based Xiao Li is more aligned with Cheng Xiaoshi
#for future reference I wrote this post s2e4 so we'll see if this holds up down the line#I'm not sure yet how far to read into this in terms of other things: is qian jin keeping secrets in the same way lu guang is?#does xiao li have as big a weakness when it comes to acting on emotions as cxs? is qj-xl's split in the present an omen for lg-cxs?#but I do think the duos are aligned enough to reflect onto each other. and I hope that the show uses that to its full potential#link click#link click spoilers#shiguang daili ren spoilers#shiguang daili ren#oh. also. I find it interesting how both qj and cxs have faced loss in different ways and yet reacted so differently#Ik it's not been confirmed yet if lg has also gone through loss but if/when whatever's going on with him is confirmed I'd love to compare#qj is still careful/particular now but perhaps less by the book and definitely willing to dabble in illegal stuff he didn't as a cop#but in a way that comes off as ends justifies the means. His personality hasn't changed as much as it seems at first glance#he's just willing to bend his morals more to achieve his aims (does he think there may be a way to save his wife still?)#is it intentional he seems to be estranged from xl now he's into this side of things? if it were lg I'd say he'd push him away to protect#but he's not. so I don't want to ascribe that to him (yet)

Just fought E4N. Holy shit that was sick.
#I looooove it#E3N was alright#and I liked one of the mechanics E2N did#but nothing in this tier comes even close to the sheer power of this lad#E4N I love you#I need to go run the nine more instances of it to get the achievements RIGHT now#that’s how cool it was#Only non-EX fight I’ve done so far that I’d say gives it a run for its money is A12N#(I have not done any savages. I am a coward.)#(And by that I mean finding a party for old savages synced is nearly impossible)#If I’m including EXs though yeah Nidhogg EX is definitely up there#I think that’s my second favorite fight I’ve done so far with this being my first#good god the game is fun#I’d love to see Northernlion run THAT.
