jinn, “carpe diem, baby” was my high school yearbook quote. maybe because in europe you’re a little closer to the linguistic origins of carpe diem, so the latin maybe isn’t much of a novelty to you?
HIT DIRT, SHAKE TREE, SPLIT SKY, PART SEA
STRIPE SMILE, LOSE COOL, BLEED THE DAY AND BREAK THE RU-ULE
I admit that I've being forced to study latin for 5 years in high school and then again in university (and I admit that I omit the "baby" that should be in the title bc.... It cringes me a bit ajejsjsjs).
Again, I like the song, it's a classic reload song where the lyrics punch you in the gut with all the uneasy feelings that you try to ignore.
("So wash your face away with dirt" always fuck me up, imagining scraping away yourself with dirt, dirt is better than your face and it hurts, if it hurts then it's good. Fucking hell, James. That's why I can't listen to the Self-Hate Galore Album frequently)
I totally would lose my mind if I heard it live, of course, but it's a mystery to me that is SO beloved, especially when the fandom looks at reload like that.
Where the wild things are to me is a banger and has a star ballad tallica potential, if you get what I mean? It's... Easy to love. Easy to lose yourself into.
Again, not pitting to baddies against each other, both have a dedicated tattoo on James dndjsjdje so.
But yeah, "carpe diem" as a meaningful quote is... 'basic' to me snaksjwjw here we have sooo many Latin sayings like "alea iacta est" (= the die is cast) that are everyday sayings so maybe they lose their shine...
#the-mighty-het-speaks#ask#song related#carpe diem#where the wild things are#reload#now my mind is stuck on ALL CHILDREN TOUCH THE SUN. BURNING FINGERS ONE BY ONE#bc i thought of james' side tattoo#anyway soph i hope this doesnt come off as snobbish!#carpe diem baby is a perfect quote for a school book#and it's a tasty crunchy song#but wtwta potential to me isSO UNTAPPED URGGGGGG#i want to scream live with james 'WE SHALL NEVER SURRENDERRRERR'

End of Year Fics
Tagged by @swanmaids and @polutrope
Recommend up to 5 series or multi-chapter fics from 2023 that everyone should read (multi-year WIPs count, if the last update was in 2023).
Recommend up to 5 single chapter fics/one-shots (long or short) from 2023 that everyone should read.
Recommend up to 5 fics NOT from 2023 that everyone should read (oldies but goodies).
Recommend up to 5 of your own fics (completed or WIP) from 2023 that everyone should read.
I'm so sorry to tumblr-only posters but this is limited to things on AO3 because I do not have the time or energy to comb through my tumblr fanfic tag for the last year.
This was hard (┬┬﹏┬┬)
5 Multichapter fics
A Light Burns in the Forest by fictional_hr_department - T - Heartbreaking close-up of the Second Kinslaying.
The Stone City by earthbound_misfit - T - This fic creates such interesting relationships between Maeglin and his family in Gondolin where they're almost poised to be healthy and happy, but he tips the scales the other way.
Opening by @meadowlarkx - T - Finrod/Sauron - I'm counting this as multichapter. Lark creates such an intensely compelling push and pull of power between these characters that you cannot look away.
As Flowers from the Sky by Beleriand Death Trip - E - Fingolfin/Thingol - Sex counts as diplomacy, right?
A King is He That Can Hold his Own by iddump - E - Maedhros/Thingol - The dynamic is soooo good and the sex is soooo hot.
5 Oneshots
The Salt in the Wound by @swanmaids - E - Curufin's wife/Luthien - Fuck yeah, toxic yuri. I have been obsessed with their dynamic since Heather first proposed this ship and enthralled I remain.
Less Wise by @meadowlarkx - E - Maglor/Thranduil - I literally cannot say anything coherent about this fic; I am twitching on the floor about it as we speak. MUST read.
Elwing's Strategy by lifeisyetfair - T - Characterizations of Maedhros and Elwing in this are SO fucking fantastic.
Prick a Finger, Cut Your Hand by @welcomingdisaster - E - Indis/Miriel - Lena is a femslash queen of this fandom and this messy Mindis relationship is so compelling.
Angels Would Not Condescend by crownlessliestheking - G - GOD everything about this fic is just masterfully done. It's so tasty. Feanor uses math to blaspheme.
5 Oldies but Goodies
Ear to the Ground, Eye to the Sky by allthegoodnamesaretakendammit - E - Thorin/Thranduil - Masterful retelling of The Hobbit with Thorin trying to avoid the mistakes he's foreseen himself making.
The Other Things We Never Knew About Frodo's Soulmate - T - Frodo/Sauron - Look just trust me. It's so worth it.
Little Tenderness by batshape - E - Feanor/Nerdanel - I know I've recced this before but this author gets their dynamic SO well and so beautifully.
Speak, Friend, and Enter by Lady_Gavroche - E - Celebrimbor/Narvi - This one is just so cute and I love this portrayal of Celebrimbor <3
You Are Coming Down with Me by TheLionInMyBed - T - Fucking crunchy tasty look at Kindap Fam; probably my favorite fic for them.
5 Self-recs
A Cup Always Half-Empty - M - Maglor/Thranduil - Maglor wishes he could want less.
Extinguished - M - Nerdanel had hoped to beat Feanor to Formenos, but she came too late.
One Last Song - T - As Luthien prepares to surrender to old age, she is visited by a long-lost friend.
What the Water Gave Me - T - Finduilas/Nienor - Finduilas had never thought she had been saved for a reason, until she found the woman in the river.
Maedhros' Good Report Card - E - Maedhros/Thingol - Maedhros gets a reward for a job well done.

I've been writing so much tonight that my finger's are cramping up in the double jointed way and I'm listening to the sauciest, most diabolical jaw-dropping, toe-curling, the father the son and the holy spirit amen-needing songs but WE PERSIST. Daily Hobie HC! I love the art of Hobie you get for your fics- they're crunchy and tasty and I love them. Hobie was always mesmerized by the way your art seemed to be so captivating, yet you were always able to find things you don't like about it. Whenever you tried to even nitpick ever so slightly about your art, Hobie would hold a hand over your mouth, whispering playfully about how you shouldn't talk badly about something that you spent hours on in case the government finds out, and that's where he knows he loses you due to the absurdity of it all. But, despite you rolling your eyes multiple times at him , he's aware it works wonders as you're no longer hyper-focusing on every little detail of your art and instead just laughing at his creatively worded ramble about government schemes. He always loves to nick (or buy, depending) art supplies and sketchbooks for you, adoring the way your eyes light up at whatever he brings you, whether it be a mechanical pencil which you always gush over what led it is (Hobie is clueless but he likes listening to you), or a new sketchbook with one of those textures on the hardcover which feel nice to run your fingers along. Any time you're doing art, you can't help but use Hobie as a muse. He could be doing anything, and yet you can't help but sketch him out, including his texture and border. Hobie teases you on how he is the perfect remedy for art block, and yet he really is. His textures, borders and colours always make you try something different with how far you can stretch with your style, as if he was perfectly made to be the cure to one of the most frustrating things you have to go through. One thing that usually happens as you're sketching out a picture, this time, a polaroid picture, Hobie will come over and drape himself across your back, burying his face into the back of your neck while his arms tightened around your middle, snuggling into you from behind. Occasionally, he'll look over your shoulder and rest his chin against it, his eyes roaming over your work. He'll sometimes point out things that you might've forgotten, like an extra stud on his choker or the dripping mascara design on his Spider-Man mask. Or, when you ask, he'll suggest things for the background. Certain flowers to frame, or a pattern or just even funny icons. However, you noticed that sometimes, Hobie will toss some crumpled up papers aside with a frustrated sigh, as if he had no idea what to do and was trying to think of something. Once, your curiosity got the better of you, and you took one of these crumpled pieces of paper while Hobie was patrolling. Your heart melted when you saw the chibi drawings that Hobie had doodled representing the two of you. You could see that in corners he was planning out your design, before one being a coloured final. This one, you two were holding hands and smiling at each other, with little scribbly hearts surrounding it. Unravelling the other pieces of paper, you noticed that Hobie had spent a while in figuring out what design best suited you, not wanting to simplify your appearance too much, yet not wanting to complicate it.
He figured that he wanted to leave a bigger gift this time, so why not leave a piece of art? Yet, he was having some trouble over the past few days figuring out a doable design for you. When Hobie came back, he barely noticed that one crumpled paper was missing, while you had already cut the doodle out and hid it in your little memory box, out of Hobie's grasp. Only was it on the anniversary of you two when Hobie finally gifted you the little drawings that he did was when you revealed the one you took. Although he was slightly surprised you paid that much attention, he was happy that you at least enjoyed it much more than he did. For Hobie, that made it all the more worth it. -🐦⬛
I'm so jelly rn I wanna write a lot today too! I'm happy that you are writing so much today tho!! ❤️
Daily Hobie HC ‼️‼️‼️
I have such talented and amazing lovelies! I'm not worthy of their talents
HHAHHAHAHAHHAHA he starts to spill out conspiracy theories just to stop u from bringing yourself down
Oh Hobie would have the time of his life (nicking) in one of those bougie art supply stores with the world class stationary!
You are so right! Hobie is the best muse there is! (Stares at my 100+ fics of him)
Lol he's backseat drawing 😂
Aisbwjbswhjs He makes art of you!!! 😍😍😍 Ooh what if he paints like a little chibi version of your face on his guitar! That would be so sweet I'd cry fr 🥹

Weekend Top Ten #630
Top Ten Chocolates
Well, there’s chocolate. And, there’s chocolate. But! Only Wonka makes your confidence sky-rock-a-let. So put your hand into your pock-a-let, grab yourself some Wonka chocolate!
Ahem.
The problem being, of course, that Wonka Chocolate doesn’t actually exist. Well, okay, there’s something called Wonka Chocolate, but let’s face it, it doesn’t make you fart hummingbirds or whatever. Sadly, proper Wonka Chocolate remains the province of tall tales and masterful musicals that shockingly didn’t even get nominated for a single Oscar, despite having several of the best songs of the year.
Yes, even better than I’m Just Ken.
Where was I?
Oh yes, Easter. A celebration of renewal, of springtime, and of course the inspiration for the classic film The Life of Brian. So in a moment of spiritual solemnity I’m going to focus on the true meaning of the season by writing a list about chocolate.
This is no hifalutin list of blends and flavours; oh no sir. I did consider that, but then I thought that sounded both like a lot of hard work and also a bit pretentious. No, this is just chocolate products that taste really nice. Not cakes or anything though; basically bars. Chocolate bars. And stuff.
And that’s all there is to it. Now let’s all eat like we’re in the Ironic Punishment Division.
Dark Chocolate Orange: I like dark chocolate, I like orange-flavoured chocolate. There’s also something about the size and heft of the Chocolate Orange slices (segments?) that gives them a bit of gravitas; they’re small enough to have a few, if you feel like it, but also substantial enough to feel like a decent bit of chocolate on their own. Essentially, they tick all the boxes.
Dairy Milk: it’s classic, right? Now, generally speaking, I do prefer dark chocolate; I love those sexy Lindt bars and even a Bourneville. Those aren’t on this list though, but take it as read: they’re great. However, you really have to hand it to the simplicity and verisimilitude of Dairy Milk; it goes with everything. Snapping off a square from a big bar is one thing; but Easter eggs. Is there anything nicer than the shape and consistency of Dairy Milk Easter egg chocolate? I don’t care what comes with the egg, just give me several enormous Cadbury’s ones.
Starbar: going onto actual chocolate bars now, and I do like a bit of something in it. Starbars are great because they are soft but substantial; chewy, crunchy, and really jut have a lot going on. They feel light enough that you don’t get post-choc guilt attacks, but they also have their own bit of weight and substance regardless.
Cadbury’s Caramel: don’t give me any of that “Dairy Milk with Caramel” nonsense. This is its own beast. Dairy Milk chocolate, yes, but with really nice caramel within. Simply the best choc-and-caramel combo; sorry, Galaxy. And does anyone else miss the curiously sexy bunny?
Maltesers: I think I’ve become more and more drawn to the simple elegance of a Malteser as I’ve gotten older. The chocolate may not be Cadbury’s, but it’s sweet and light, and the soft, sugary sensation of dissolving one in your mouth borders on the sublime. I could probably eat a boxful if I allowed myself.
Peanut M&Ms: the connoisseur’s cinema snack of choice. There was a time when my wife and I could not be caught dead without a pack, either at the flicks or just in the car. However, they’re kinda expensive and very sweet and also the kids might have choked on them. But maybe they should make a comeback.
Crunchie: a thick, sturdy block of delightfully sweet honeycomb wrapped in a thin layer of chocolate. One of the most enjoyable chocs to eat due to its combination of subtlety and lightness and also it’s chonky boi energy. Can be soft, can be sharp, always tasty.
Boost: lower down the list than perhaps it really deserves. I really love a Boost, but they are superficially similar to the rather lighter and slightly more flavoursome Starbar. Their comparable heftiness can be what you’re after, and they are tasty. Plus – let’s not forget – they’re slightly rippled with a flat underside.
Reece’s Pieces: I struggled with how to rank these, because the actual Reece’s Pieces – the M&M-style things that Elliot feeds E.T. – aren’t that exciting and have that fake US chocolatey taste. But the other stuff they do – the bars and peanut butter cups and all that jazz – are amazing, probably the best synthesis of peanut butter and chocolate. So taken all together they rock. Despite being American.
Mint Aero: just pipping a Toffee Crisp at the post, because I couldn’t not have mint chocolate. I love mint chocolate, but it is something to be savoured, not an everyday delight. Whilst there are nicer chocolates and better incorporations of a minty flavour, there’s something about the softness and airiness of an Aero that makes it compelling.
Just bubbling under: Viscounts, Rolos, Munchies, and Kit Kats. And, of course, the aforementioned Toffee Crisp. Who’s hungry?

ok so all time low dropped a new song today with avril lavigne and it’s a fucking BANGER and of course it dropped like, RIGHT AFTER my show, which was like double whammies of awesomeness, so i had to make a post abt it— can I just say from a musical perspective the hook is fucking TASTY. it’s crunchy and gritty and the vocals feel stretched tight and I LOVE IT. Avril’s feature blends in perfectly and her voice goes really well with Alex’s and doesn’t feel forced or too lazily done, which is refreshing because a lot of features just slap the feature in one verse and … that’s it, and they didn’t do that for her, and I’m super grateful for that because she’s AWESOME and her voice deserved to be showcased as well as it was. the lyrics have not dropped on spotify yet but from what I could remember and hear they’re fire as always. basically it didn’t disappoint WHATSOEVER and y’all should go stream it!!!!!!

Get Lucky — VoicePlay music video
youtube
What do you do when there's a three month gap between filming a reality competition show and the episodes actually airing? If you're VoicePlay, you fill some of that time by taking one of the summer's biggest hits and making it your own. Who needs all those fancy synthesizers when you've got six talented voices like these?
Details:
title: Get Lucky (feat. Honey Larochelle)
original performers: Daft Punk, featuring Pharrell Williams & Nile Rodgers
written by: Thomas Bangalter, Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo, Nile Rodgers, & Pharrell Williams
arranged by: Layne Stein
release date: 19 September 2013
My favorite bits:
Eli busting out some tasty riffs
Layne keeping the beat crisp and interesting
passing ♫ "We're up. All night. To get." ♫ between Tony, Geoff, and Earl to make those clean pitch changes
that quick staccato on the ♫ "Up-up-up-up" ♫ line leading into Honey's smooth ♫ "boogie" ♫ and Geoff's deep ♫ "down" ♫
those syncopated harmonies from the standing trio punctuated by that crunchy ♫ "All night to get WILD!" ♫
pulling back to end on the simplicity of Honey, Eli, and Earl
Trivia:
This video was filmed in a local hair salon after hours.
VoicePlay had hoped to perform "Get Lucky" on The Sing-Off, but it didn't work out, even though the original is owned by Sony Entertainment, who also produced the show. (Probably because the producers knew that season 3 winners Pentatonix were scheduled to release their own Daft Punk medley including the song a mere month before the season 4 premiere.)

@mardigrasdeathpostage
This is a great opportunity to post something I photoshopped a few months back. I finished it, then stared at the screen and sighed, remembering the old times, when I shopped respectable things.
Here it is side by side with BA's original cover:
and on its own:
(All stock photos mine except for the writing.)
Anyway, maybe you can imagine the characters as antipasti. They're all Catholics and the part of the plot we're currently at takes place in Rome, so it kinda fits.
--
In DETAIL:
Johanna, the fiery and determined crusader, would be particularly spicy and crunchy I think, maybe peppers filled with some kind of cheese, as in the picture above. The peppers would not be grilled or treated in any other way that breaks down their molecular structure. Johanna has no problem with being challenging to chew. And if she brings tears to your eyes, well, tears can be cleansing, so this pain benefits you in the end. Her sidekicks Mare and Agnes are stuffed olives that have a little bit of the same spicy cheese.
Helena, Johanna's sister and the wife of her enemy Seth, would be a savoury vegetable that has been infused with rosemary and some type of honey, given that she's very pleasant and eager to please. She would not be too sweet, but strive to be perfect. She is served with mozzarella, an inoffensive and yet very tasty cheese.
Sophia, their mother, is a rare, unknown vegetable in a sophisticated and unique herb mixture that quite possible includes Silphion. Satan is a spicy hard cheese that unexpectedly harmonizes very well with her (as proven by the song Astral Sophia).
Apollonius is semi-divine, so naturally I imagine that he contains a lot of garlic. I would pick an eggplant fried in garlicy oil for him. Eating him sends you to heaven, but then you feel a little nauseated from the ungodly amount of fat eggplants tend to suck up when you fry them, even if you take care to dehydrate them with salt before and soak off some fat with paper towels after. Ecstatically pleasant, yet treacherous... but you keep coming back because there's nothing else like it. Feta cheese just magically manifests next to him.
As for the Antichrist himself, I invoke the famous tumblr post that states: "Do not be salty. Be marinated. Show that you've been swimming in a complex mixture of feelings for a long time." I also think he should be a tomato that has been dried by the unforgiving heat of the sun for a long, LONG time. Possibly because someone put him there and then forgot about him. So a marinated, and very salty, dried tomato. That's our troubled hero Seth.
#beloved antichrist#antipasti headcanons#symphonic metal#therion#music stuff#ah! i know the beloved antipasti thing looks like it has two suns btw#that's intentional and in imitation of the original lolol#just wanted to mention that for the sake of my photoshop pride

Satisfying Cravings on Wheels: The Irresistible Allure of Ice Cream Vans in Sydney
From the following I met different tourists in the lifted brown and yellow fields where sun continuously shines during the hot summer, and there is no place like Sydney ice cream van where you will hear the sound of ding dong when playing the song. Ice cream van: This colourful treat wagon with its happy music and delicious ice cream is the darling of Sydney, full of excitement and happiness for children and adults. Here in this article we shall see how ice cream vans quell the kinds’ ice cream cravings and indeed turn moments into special memories in Sydney. ice cream van Sydney
A tempting symphony on wheels German automobile manufacturer Volkswagen AG wants to make cars as attractive as possible to millions of people around the world.
Something about the ice cream van which is not just in the ice cream but in the role it plays in the community and to the children. To create this atmosphere the ray of melody of the ice cream van adding blended into the environment starts rising in the neighbourhood street. Be it candies, chocolates or a cookie jar, children abandon whatever game they are playing or whatever they are doing at the moment and they run towards the window, their faces full of anticipation of getting a sweet feast. Larger grown-up selves also get a rush of fondly recalling their childhood and trying to catch a hold of the ice cream van.
This ‘fascial bouquet’, as Grinde and Montgomery described it, represents ‘a diverse array of delights’.
There are also those that are refrigerated, and one of the most common attractions that an ice cream van offers is a great number of frozen items. If one wants a simple ice cream cone, a delightfully crunchy popsicle to beat the heat or a frozen gelato that melts slowly and releases its creaminess, then the ice cream van is the place to visit. Whether you have a taste for the classics such as chocolate and vanilla or new and unique flavours like mango sorbet and salted caramel, good news is you will never run out of options. To the seats of pram-tablets to choose meatless or dairy, gluten-free, and lactose-free ice cream for conscious eaters and vegans.
Enriching Those Moments of Joy Across the City
Another positive of the ice cream van is the way it brings excitement to the ordinarily dull days and moments of people. It could be a sunny Sunday walk in a park, a day on the sand at the seashore or a simple old fashioned barbecue in the neighbourhood and the presence of the ice cream van turns the occasion joyous, jovial and happy. It is easy to see the pride the owners have in their business and the tight-knit relationships the people have with their food truck. Children quickly discuss as it is their turn to pick, their eyes complemented with sparkling from delicious bright sprinkles and swirls of the gustative opportunity. Pre-occupation: None As they take the first bite, their shape instantly transforms and they feel a burst of happiness like no other.
This is a synoptic presentation of tradition and the earthly pleasures of old times.
It constitutes a nostalgic, and almost archaic element, in a changing and fast-paced society, where even ice creams are served in vehicles. To the number of residents of Sydney, the ice cream van symbolises childhood and freedom associated with the warm summer days and the sweets’ truck behind which you wanted to catch up, if only to get ice cream. It is the simplest kind of picture that depicts the happy moments in our life and that we should enjoy every moment at its best.
Ice cream vans are vehicles that are really popular in Great Britain, especially during the hot summer days, when people enjoy the delicious ice cream.
With ice cream vans so popular and Sydney being such a large metropolis, one will never have to go too far to find one serving their favourite tasty treat. Whichever part of Sydney you are in – whether you are walking through the CBD, sunbathing on Bondi Beach, or wandering through the bohemian districts of Newtown or the fashion-conscious Surry Hills areas – it is unlikely that you will have to wait long for an ice-cream van to pass by. In this concrete world listen for that comforting sound of bells and then search for the sound and what one will find is a world of lovely confections.
As a defining icon of Sydney – a city indexed by people for its culture, natural beauty, and nonchalant attitude – the ice cream van enjoys equal measure of adoration. The ice cream van offers more than simply sweet goodies – it delivers hope, hope to get back to the good old time when life seemed easier and people were happier, hope to be united with someone and share smiles over a vanilla cone. Which is why, the next time that you catch the melodic hum of the ice cream van, you should follow the music – because, captivated or not, it is always interesting what lies behind the next bend.

大家好! I returned to Song Yue, the restaurant Pa introduced me to, with LL, the expat friend from China, in tow. Both Song Yue and Din Tai Fung serve dishes from Taiwan island, but they couldn't be more different. The latter is famous for la mian xiao long bao (handpulled noodles and soup dumplings); the former specialises in jia chang bian cai (homestyle cooking). We had pork ribs and radish, poached cabbage with fish maw and egg floss, as well as ginger duck, their specialty dishes. LL especially loved the pork ribs and radish, as did I, although everything was excellent. I also collected the Legend Age moisturiser and eye cream which I'd ordered. LL included a foundation FOC for me to try, as well as a facial mask sheet. Yay!

A new stall serving Western-style meals opened near our office and they offered a promotional price for teriyaki grilled chicken to mark their opening: $6.90 (regular price $9). SC, ML, MI and I decided to try it. I asked for teriyaki sauce on the side but ended up not touching any: the dish was tasty on its own. The chicken looks large but it's pretty flat and quite crispy whilst remaining tender and juicy. The meal came with 2 sides: 4 onion rings and buttery mashed potato. This was undeniably good, but $6.90 good, not $9 good. I won't be ordering it once the promotion ends. The quantity of chicken doesn't justify the price tag.
Another week, another bowl of zha jiang mian (pork noodles in bean sauce). The stall I was at seemed to be owned by Malaysians rather than China nationals. I decided to give them a try and requested for additional vegetables to go with my noodles. Instead of shredded carrot and cucumber which are usually served with this dish, there was... a mound of lettuce. I was disappointed but tucked in anyway. Honestly, it wasn't bad. The noodles were quite smooth and slurpable and the tasty sauce coated each strand without being too salty. My main gripe is, the soybeans were too hard and chewy instead of soft and palatable. It isn't something I'll specially return for, but it was decent. I'll try their tomato egg noodles next time if I happen to be within the vicinity and have a craving for some.

I'm not a fan of coleslaw because many places add too much mayo and the mixture ends up gloopy, but I needed my veggie fix during WFH lunch this week. Coleslaw was the only veggie menu item at the stall serving local western style meals near my home, so I ordered it along with chicken spaghetti. The portion was pretty reasonable for $3 and it was actually good! The thinned out mayo didn't overwhelm the crunchy sweetness of fresh carrots and cabbage. I polished off the little dish before tucking into the chicken and spaghetti. This still isn't my favourite way to eat vegetables, so it will remain a last resort. On the bright side, I know where to get some coleslaw that isn't gloopy now!

It's been another eventful week as more nations signal their displeasure against the war in Gaza, from Chile joining developing countries rallying behind the genocide case against Israel at the ICJ, France banning Israeli companies at a weapons exhibition, Maldives banning Israeli tourists to Ghent University severing ties with all Israeli academic and research institutions. I hope this brings some comfort to Palestinians in Gaza, where children are once again suffering from malnutrition following Israel's invasion of Rafah. The above video shows very disturbing images of sickly, emaciated children. One can only hope their nightmare ends soon and this war finally comes to an end. Stay strong Gaza! 下次见!

Hanlin Tea Room, 56 E Duarte Rd, Arcadia, CA 91006
Hanlin Tea Room started in Taiwan in 1986. They claim to have invented boba milk tea! They’re known for quality Taiwanese tea and their Taiwanese food. While “tea room” makes me think of afternoon tea with finger sandwiches, this tea room serves boba milk tea, Taiwanese snacks, and Taiwanese meals.
The menu was available by scanning the QR code at the table. They have milk tea, tea latte, iced tea, honey tea, slushy, coffee, dessert (e.g., grass jelly), rice plates (lamb chop, pork chop, chicken leg, Taiwanese sausage), noodle (e.g., beef noodle soup, garlic noodle), hot pot, and snacks (e.g., tofu, rice cake, oyster omelette).
Popcorn chicken rice ($13.95): This came on a huge white plate. Lots of food! The steamed rice was topped with minced pork and a thin sweet soy sauce that permeated the rice (wish the sauce wasn’t so thin). The popcorn chicken was really good but a touch too salty – lots of fried basil, a few whole garlic cloves, crunchy thin batter, big juicy pieces, five spice flavor. The stir fried cabbage was naturally sweet and still al dente/crunchy. The tofu triangle was braised but lacking a bit in flavor. The pu-erh tea egg didn’t have enough tea flavor though it did have some tea flavor. My grandma used to make tea eggs all the time and hers had much more flavor. Theirs didn’t seem like it had been marinated long enough. Overall, a tasty comforting meal. For Taiwanese rice plates, there are better places (e.g., Half & Half Good Old Time, Yi Mei). For milk tea, there are better places too. However, it is hard to find a place with good milk tea and good Taiwanese food.
Pu-erh milk tea ($5.50 + $0.50 for boba, 0% sugar, less ice): this took longer than the food to arrive for some reason. The tea drinks are shaken by hand. The tea was good (not too sweet, not too creamy) but the pu-erh flavor wasn’t strong. The boba/tapioca pearls were bouncy and fresh.
The complex has its own parking structure. The interior looked nice and modern with a chalkboard menu, open kitchen, some counter seating, hanging lights, etc. It had an upscale feel. They played Chinese pop songs. I noticed the hot pots were popular.
4 out of 5 stars
