82. Mile High by Liz Tomforde--⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

MILE HIGH is the epitome of those romance books where they're a million hours long (in audiobook format) and even though everything seems like it's going well, there are still 10+ hours left in the book. My anxiety had a field day with that one and even though I was terrified, I really wanted to see these two get the happy ending they deserved.

I knew there was a lot of hype around MILE HIGH. In fact, I had convinced myself that I would probably not like it because sometimes hyped up things are just not for me. But I was very happy to find that I actually really, really enjoyed this. The chemistry between these two characters pulled me in, and their mature way of going through life together (save for a couple of instances) made me want to stay. Also, holy, that spice? Jaysus.

There's some pretty great conversations in this about self-worth and how we view ourselves and our bodies. Being someone who has always had a messy relationship with my body, this book was almost healing? The way the MMC talks to the FMC and helps her grow into a more genuinely confident woman was empowering. Even though he was that person who is really good at giving at advice but has a harder time retaining said advice for himself, this only made him more relatable as a person.

I loved the side characters and I'm salty that I didn't read their story before meeting them in this one. I also really loved how supportive they all were.

I enjoyed a lot of things about this book and save for some of the decisions made and admittedly, the length of the book, this was such a great and sexy read. I'm glad I gave it a shot! Now I need the sequel.

83. My Love Mix-Up! Vol. 3 by Wataru Hinekure (Writer) , Aruko (Illustrator) , Jan Cash (Translator)--⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Okay, this was FREAKING CUTE. This volume had me kicking my feet in bed like an excited child. I'm so excited to see more of this relationship as it develops!

But I also loved seeing the best friends finally be more honest with each other. I'm excited, as well, to see that one relationship grow and change.

There was more honesty in this volume and more silly hijinks.

I can't say too much because spoilers LOL but I really liked how the characters were being called out for being scared to admit how they were feeling. I think everyone worked off each other really well.

84. Under Currents by Nora Roberts--⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

UNDER CURRENTS started a bit differently than the past suspense books I've read by Nora Roberts and I think it was different mainly because it was from the POV of a MMC. It was also something that I could tell had some seriously dark undertones. And this book was DARK in that it dealt with a lot of physical abuse. It's not the darkest I've read, but it was still a bit surprising to see--which isn't a bad thing, it was almost slightly refreshing after I read a few of Robert's books.

I also liked that while this did have its similar formulaic outline as Roberts's past suspenseful romance novels, it deviated in some instances. That kept me on my toes, even though I could still kind of guess where the story was going.

What I will comment on is the fact that there was so much random kissing others on their lips? Like, not couples. Just like, an old ex gf who is married kissing her childhood dance date on the lips "lightly" as a platonic thing, or the FMC kissing a teen boy in "thanks" "lightly" on the lips. LOL why was there so much random light kissing on others' lips? It was weird LOL.

Anyway, another fun romantic suspense novel! Will hopefully pick up another Roberts book in the near future!

85. Cherry Magic! Thirty Years of Virginity Can Make You a Wizard?! by Yuu Toyota--⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Okay, I really enjoyed CHERRY MAGIC! even if it gave me severe secondhand embarrassment LOL. I was screeching and giggling as I read the dirty thoughts going through the love interest's mind. I especially related to how the MC notices how different thoughts can be from the look on a person's face. It's so easy to hide what you're thinking because your brain and the privacy of your thoughts is that one part of you that truly belongs to you.

I like this concept and I'm excited to see how these two characters get on. Have I already ordered the next three volumes? Maybe...

86. Ready or Not by Cara Bastone--⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

READY OR NOT was so much more than I was anticipating. I already loved this trope, but the way Cara Bastone explored this topic and the relationships surrounding the protagonist and her friends and love interest was done so well.

While this was definitely about the pregnancy the MC experiencing from the very beginning of the book, READY OR NOT was more about the characters and how all relationships have various levels to them. Also, how a pregnant woman is sometimes viewed by society--especially one that doesn't fit to the societal norm of how a pregnant woman should present herself and her "situation".

I know that some might view some of the situations as idealistic, I mean this is a fiction novel--the characters get to have idealistic outcomes sometimes. I loved the level of communication between everyone, the MC's level of maturity but also self-awareness. I loved her over-the-top energy levels and how she herself had some pretty big character growth moments.

I also listened to the audiobook of READY OR NOT and phew, that narrator was GREAT. She fully committed to the role and gave the MC so much personality. Also, the smuttier scenes will have you blushing. There weren't a lot of those, but the ones we got were definitely worth the wait after the building of anticipation.

This was just such a pleasant read and I think it's one of those drama-free books that will leave many readers happy and surprised.

Books of 2021, August

#54 - Anne of the Island by L.M. Montgomery (re-read) - 5/5 stars

Each of these books seems sweeter than the last. Even knowing how it ends, I was in agony over Anne continually rejecting Gilbert. I wept over Ruby and laughed with Phil and highlighted so many bits and pieces. The next book in the series is where I left off ages ago when I first picked up these books, so I’m doubly excited to get to it.

#55 - Anne of Windy Poplars by L.M. Montgomery - 4/5 stars

Had to get the audiobook for this one. It’s such a different style and tone in the beginning than the others in the series that it was a little difficult to keep engaged. I discovered only after that, while chronologically it’s the fourth in the series, it was the seventh published. It felt sleepy compared to the prequels.

#56 - Anne's House of Dreams by L.M. Montgomery - 5/5 stars

This whole series really is a love song to life, isn’t it? And we finally get a bit more of Anne and Gilbert’s romance, which is always great. Did enjoy that little twist near the end. (Honestly should have seen it coming.) As always, I adore the characters.

#57 - My Man Jeeves by P.G. Wodehouse - 4/5 stars

This book was plain fun. I read it as an audiobook during a slow period at work and kept struggling not to laugh out loud.

#58 - A Conspiracy of Kings by Megan Whalen Turner (re-read) - 4/5 stars

It’s taken me so long to get to this one that I finally caved and just listened to the audio again, making notes in my hard copy as I went. And then I listened to the whole thing in a day.

While this isn’t my favorite of the series, I do still very much love it (particularly the gun gag, but who doesn’t love that?). Sophos is in my top four favorite characters. The way he constantly tries to emulate Gen and constantly underestimates his own strength kills me every time. Also, while I love reading about Gen and Irene’s romance, Sophos and Helen’s is more what I crave, so of course I adore them.

#59 - A Wind from the Wilderness by Suzannah Rowntree - 3/5 stars

For the life of me I can’t remember where I first heard of this book. I know I ended up getting it on Kindle a while ago and then forgot about it until I was searching for a different book. Decided to read it on a whim and enjoyed it pretty well, overall. No I lied this story frustrated me to no end.

Like, for a while there I could kind of enjoy it. The romance felt a little forced to me, and the book had a couple of basic editing issues (might have been related to ebook formatting, really), but I enjoyed the historical setting and details (minus the inaccuracy about the size of an average Crusades-era warhorse), even if the plot didn’t really grab me.

Then a lot of stuff happened in quick succession near the end and I just kind of gave up. Here I was hoping for a slightly happy ending and did I get that? Oh, no.

I don’t plan to finish the series.

#60 - Eagle of the Ninth by Rosemary Sutcliff - 5/5 stars

This one ended up on my TBR after I saw it rec’d in the Queen’s Thief Fandom (I want to say it in someway inspired TQT but not 100% on that). Got it as an audibook and listened to it during a housework Saturday.

The audiobook was all of 4.5 hours, tops, and the narrative style is very easy to listen to. Not a lot of high action, but a solid adventure all the same. Reminded me a little of Stephen Lawhead but that could just be the Roman Britain setting.

There is a short series that follows, but I like this as a standalone.

(Tried recommending it to my dad since it seems in his taste, but he remembers the movie and I don’t think he liked that one. Said something about it being less accurate than Gladiator which is low abuse for him. So I don’t think he’d willingly read this.)

#61 - Children of the Mind by Orson Scott Card - 4/5 stars

And that’s the first Ender series finished!

I listened to the first three in audio form (library didn’t have the audiobook for this) so actually reading was kind of weird. That and it’s been a while since I read the other books so half of the details were lost to the ether and I had to keep looking up summaries.

I really struggled with the first half of this book. Maybe I just wasn’t in the right mood for it, but it felt a little slow (that and I kept reading it before bed and falling asleep). It proved to be just as introspective and challenging and surprisingly emotional as the rest of the series. I love the way Card’s experiences and research are clearly evidenced, just off the page. I love how I’d be reading along and bam! Bit of poetry on the gentle and reliable nature of real love here; hilarious and witty dialogue there; oh, and we’re back to discussing the nature of humanity.

Yes, I definitely cried at one point, quite to my own (hormonal) surprise.

On one downside, while I like a lot of Card’s ideas and especially how he communicates those ideas, I do not like how he (or at least many of his characters) treats marriage. It’s a little too flippant for my taste. Especially among the cradle Catholics in his cast.

Also how DARE Card make me sympathize with Peter 2.0?

#62 - Adorning the Dark by Andrew Peterson - 4/5 stars (original ‘21 TBR)

My first nonfiction of the year! And wow, this one was good! (Yes it took me a while to get through but I kept getting distracted.) I’ll be coming back to this one again and again. So much wisdom here, and I love how Peterson writes like it’s a conversation with the reader. It’s such a warm, welcoming style.

It did get a little long-winded and rambly at points, hence the four stars.

(I definitely prefer this to his children’s fiction but that’s down to taste.)

#63 - Anne of Ingleside by L.M. Montgomery - 4/5 stars

My only true complaint of the series at this point is that SO MANY characters have been introduced up to now that I’ve lost track of all of them. Took me forever to remember who Rebecca Dew was.

As always, I adore Anne and her family.

#64 - Thick as Thieves by Megan Whalen Turner (re-read) - 4/5 stars

Listened to this at warp speed during work on the 31st. It remains my least favorite of the series (for whatever that’s worth). I miss Gen.

That said, there’s plenty I appreciate about this installment: the different pantheon to explore, the myths and appearances from those gods and heroes, the fulfillment of Gen’s promise made to Costis in KOA, the shift from straight-up court intrigue and trickery to adventure, and getting to see Costis from an outside perspective that isn’t Gen’s.

It was also interesting reading this after finally getting ROTT and knowing now what was going on back on the Little Peninsula at the same time.

And HELLO PHERIS IS RIGHT FRICKIN THERE. No wonder I recognized his POV of that scene in ROTT. AND THE LETTER KAMET WRITES HIM.

DNF:

Fable by Adrienne Young - Irritating MC, bland story building, and I didn’t like where the romance was headed.

Heartless by Anne Elisabeth Stengl (original ‘21 TBR) - unsympathetic MC (another princess who complains about her lessons and her clothes and refuses to marry a man because he’s “stodgy” and “probably doesn’t read poetry” and “isn’t romantic”). Writing style wasn’t terrible, but didn’t hold my interest. Also the cat creeped me out. I read a book once that included a horse that was born without eyes and I have never recovered. (Several reviews also mentioned this was allegorical, though I’m not entirely sure how.)

currently reading: finally picked back up "Not All Fairy Tales Have a Happy Ending" the story of Serra Online. I stalled out on it because it turns out I needed glasses. oops.

last song: that isn't part of the The Labyrinth soundtrack I have on repeat all day? The kiddos and I have been listening to Pool Party by The Aquabats a lot.

last movie: I finally saw most of Luca.

last series: Leverage: Redemption which was such an amazing sequel series to an already amazing show. I loved it.

sweet, savoury or spicy?: all? Love spicy, but also love me some sweet and savory together, like kettle corn.

craving: lunch.

tea or coffee: tea, only.

currently working on: I'm outlining a 1x2 BDSM!AU that will be a 5+1 (the format, not the ship), so that I don't write another nearly 20k word fic; I ain't got time for that.

unpopular movie/TV show opinion: I don't think you need to invest in something you don't like because it's "prestige" tv. Just because it's critically acclaimed doesn't mean it's enjoyable. Watch for enjoyment, not because you feel you have to.

a movie you liked and everyone else hated: Sahara is one of my fave movies of all time. I have it on a list of faves and my justification was "because fuck you." (Also, and this one is for Mario, Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift)

a movie you hated and everyone else liked: I generally try not to watch things I know I'm not going to like... But I really didn't like Children of Men (for a variety of reasons) and it is very critically acclaimed.

a movie you think deserved to be more famous: The Commitments. IDK If you need to be Irish really get it... but the music alone is totally worth giving it a watch. Also, The Great Muppet Caper, which may be the greatest movie ever made.

a show you would sacrifice many others in order to save: Lie To Me. It was just getting so good and then cut off right in the middle of season 2.

a fun fact about youself that doesn’t come up in conversations: I was a jr rodeo princess.

celebrity crush: When I search the "age appropriate crush" tag on my tumblr the two biggest hits are Chris Evans and Ian Bohen...

something you love about where you live: I live surrounded by water. I can drive 15-20 mins and get to the bay or the ocean. And so we have micro climates. It might be 85* during the day, but the fog will roll in at night, and it will drop to 55*. It's away from downtown, but I can be in The City in about 30 mins. Perfect.

something you can’t do but wish you could: play an instrument well, and speak another language fluently.

one thing the pandemic made you miss, that wasn’t even your thing before: my commute to work. I've realized that I'm actually an outgoing introvert, and that transitional time in my car between work and home let me decompress. Now I just go for runs to get the same alone time with podcasts/audiobooks.

The Hate Project by Kris Ripper

The Love Study #2

Adored this Carina Adores romance! It had me smiling, caring, chuckling, and hoping for the best for two rather prickly characters. I will say that the story grew on me and I was not enamored at all by the end of the first chapter BUT by the end of the second chapter I was invested and wanted to know what would happen.

What I liked:

* The slow build of the relationship

* That the two men were not “easy” to love from the first moment you met them

* The group of friends that go by a name that would be censored if I typed it in her…they are there for one another no matter what.

* Being able to read and understand this book without having read book one in the series first

* Stepping into a world that is not my own

* Oscar: anxiety plagued, quirky, caring, organized, interesting, a person that as explained helped me understand better someone I know.

* Jack: bright, cautious, caring, loves his grandmother, a person with potential that is tapped in this story.

* That both characters became more and more real as I read, I was invested in them and their HEA was something I truly wanted them to achieve.

* Evelyn: Jack’s grandmother is a character and oh so lovable!

* The way the hoarding aspect of the story was handled

* Finding out what “The Secret” was

* All of it really except…

What I didn’t like:

* Having to say goodbye to the characters when the book ended…

I’d never had friends until college. And even then, I wouldn’t have had friends except that Ronnie and I were freshman year roommates (before she transitioned, obviously), and she was friends with Dec and Mase and Mia, and they came around a lot and just sort of looped me in. It happened slowly over that first year and suddenly I had…friends.

What’s that thing with snake poison, where you take it in small doses every day to grow your immunity to it? That’s what happened with the Motherfuckers. Eventually I built up a tolerance to their, like, happiness and friendliness and optimism. Now my brain just recognizes them as a part of me. The same thing probably happened to them: eventually they built up a tolerance to my moods and freak-outs.

The most important thing you need to know about my friends is that they’re all way better people than I am. You can tell because they threw me a pity party. There’s the aforementioned Declan and Sidney, who got together during the commission of a video series called The Love Study on Sidney’s YouTube channel. Then there’s Mia and Ronnie, disgustingly married to each other. And the last of the official Motherfuckers is Mason, who once tried to get married (to Dec) and was left at the altar (by Dec). Which was awkward for a while, but now it’s fine. Though of all of us Mase is the one who wants a white picket fence and 2.5 kids.

Sounds fucking awful to me, but to each his own, I don’t judge, whatever floats your life raft, et cetera.

Since I didn’t want to get my impotent rage-slash-panic germs on anyone, I took up a seat in the corner and didn’t leave it except to use the bathroom and acquire victuals. By which I mean vegan, gluten-free, cauliflower-based pizza that turned out to be delicious. It used to be that my friends had an informal rotation for who’d sit with me, trading off for the duration of the social event, but that was before Jack. Jack was new to the group. Dec had collected him from work, and for reasons I didn’t understand (I would have suspected sexual favors if I didn’t know better), he kept mostly showing up to drinks with the Motherfuckers. And was now also on the invite list for ad hoc gatherings to celebrate catastrophic job loss.

Jack and I had no other setting with each other than arguing. Since neither of us was all that nice (and everyone else in the Motherfuckers was very nice), it worked out. He thinks he knows everything, I definitely know everything, and even though for the most part we would arrive at the same point from different angles, we spent most of our fights poking at each other’s angles to prove they were incorrect.

I probably shouldn’t have been surprised when it turned out bickering was actually foreplay.

Since the party was in my honor I was obligated to stay through dinner, and I did. In my corner. Weathering the well-intended reassurances of my friends was hard enough, but when Dec brought out one of those quirky adult card games where kittens exploded I had to get the hell out of there. Too much goodness on a bad day.

Jack apparently had a similar thought. It wasn’t the first time we’d made our escape at the same moment. This time, instead of parting ways on the sidewalk with a lukewarm we know each other through friends wave, both of us stopped.

He stopped a second before I did, which I immediately decided made him more desperate. It wasn’t charitable, but I believe in keeping track of who has the advantage in any encounter. Even a one-off.

“I live ten minutes away,” he said.

“Good for you.”

His lips twisted a little, from not-smile to not-impressed. “This is a pity fuck, Oscar. Take it or leave it.” With that he turned and made for a black two-door something-something on the other side of the street.

I hesitated. For about five seconds. But following up a pity party with a pity fuck sounded about right. “Just to clarify,” I called as I caught up with him, “I don’t do relationships.”

He hit a button that unlocked his car. “Just to clarify, I’m not offering one.”

Books Read In 2020: The Why

In a tradition I accidentally started for myself in 2016 and now quite enjoy, at the end of the year I look back at my reading list and answer the question, why did you read this particular book?

Below, my 100 reads of 2020 are split into groups by target readership age, plus nonfiction at the end, now with a bonus note about how I heard of it. Which I probably won’t continue to do next year, but it was fun to try.

ADULT FICTION

I read each of these books because...

A Glitter of Gold - Liz Johnson. 2019. It had me at "her pirate tour business," but between the shipwreck & the museum-director love interest it was like BLOOD & TREASURE ROMANCE AU LET'S GOOO.

How I heard of it: a book blog

The Last Woman in the Forest - Diane Les Becquets. 2019. Recommended by a dog lover; I'm down for a thriller about a woman who has a dream dog-inclusive job like this.

How I heard of it: a book blog

Good Omens - Terry Pratchett & Neil Gaiman. 1990. I really enjoyed the miniseries and wanted to see if the book everyone loved so much was as good (for the record: it was not. at least not if you’ve seen the miniseries first; otherwise they are probably equal).

This Is Home - Lisa Duffy. 2019. Attractive cover + I flipped it open to a random page and just liked the writing style.

How I heard of it: library

Dear Mr. Knightley - Katherine Reay. 2013. I'd had this on the back burner for a while because the MC sounded like me, and one day I got sick of not being able to find any fluffy contemporary romances with beta male heroes and decided Matthew Gray Gubler was gonna star in this one. (spoiler alert: it is a good book but that did not work)

How I heard of it: a book blog

Rubbernecker - Belinda Bauer. 2013. Criminal Minds sent me into a tailspin so I went hunting for books to cast Spencer Reid in again; the Asperger's/case-solving/difficult relationship with mother combo sounded promising.
