Newb player here and a doodler of drawing Overwatch characters. My main is LifeWeaver because I loved his visuals and it made me started playing Overwatch. As someone who prefer gay fics. I know how vicious the yaoi fan girls can be.

After observation on looking at lore and Blizzard artwork, I do seem Yeehan to be problematic. I don’t get how Ashe is a villain. I had seen her being paired with JunkerQueen and Widow Maker. She seem to be the only family Cassidy could relate to.

I do agree with the reasoning of people wanting Cassidy to be gay and end up with a guy, again personally I see him as Bi or Demi. At least that's a valid reason compared to "he doesn't fit into the stereotypical gender roles so he must be gay", that's the reasoning I, and many others, have seen for Hanzo and Genji.

Also with the villainisation of Ashe, it's less in fanfics (people just tend to ignore her there) and more in general discussions about Yeehan. I've seen shippers shit on Ashe by saying she forced Cassidy to join the Deadlock gang which...no???? Though it has changed recently with the rise of Ouihaw.

Trust me when Ashe was introduced there were riots on the internet of people either hating her or homophones using her as an excuse to hate and bully Yeehan shippers. It was a wild time (and it's repeating on Tictok so-).

As for the Cass and Ashe being family thing, that's mainly a fanon concept, it's not supported by Canon and the Deadlock novel actively contradicts it. Though I do get the appeal of that headcannon, as long as your not shoving that headcannon down people's throats then it's fine with me.

no, it’s okay, you are free to express your opinion, just like I’m free to get annoyed at the tag being filled with Lena and Lena and Lena I haven’t watched a show that has an ace character in it, Sex Education, because it’s not my kind of show and it bores me (though I do reblog gifsets of the Ace Scene and I am so happy about it. Because I do care about ace representation, I try to promote these things and also to share so that it might reach people who are interested in shows like that and will get a kick out of it. But I’m not saying everyone has to), and I’m not saying you must like everything, but at the same time a fandom like ours simply ignoring the plot of entire episodes because… what, they only find one character interesting and they couldn’t find ANY other worth mentioning, is something I personally found ridiculous. 

And that’s kind of the thing, isn’t it? You raised a great point. If this was a part of the fandom that from the beginning had simply said ‘I like this because of my tastes, and everyone has different ones’ I wouldn’t be exasperated, but given how it actually went, nope, THEY said it wasn’t just about people’s tastes, it’s about having representation and supporting fellow lgbtqia+ fans. So good part of my frustration depends on this specific fandom and how it behaved in the past. 

For more context, it bothers me that the loudest (even if small) group of fans left watching supergirl on tumblr are the ones yelling about how Kara and Lena not being together is homophobia, and how they are being queerbaited and how the show (and non supercorp fans) is against gay people, while the tag itself is full of posts either complaining about the lack of Lena, and writing posts about Lena, and completely ignoring the amazing wlw couple there and the trans character there, and in fact those episodes with little Lena but focused on those characters get downvoted/boycotted/ignored by the fandom, and while they hate on all actors and writers if they so much as point out it’s not canon or that they are being bullies, and attack minorities, people of colors, transgender people, people with mental illnesses all day long to defend their ‘rights’. Not to mention that it’s the same group that back in the day accused people of shipping Kara and Mon El, also canon, together because they were against James, who is black, and so it was because ‘racism,’ and then turned around and hated James as soon as he was canonly together with Lena. And there is proof of them being racist as well like when they photoshopped James’s actor as an ape* next to Lena’s actress, and how Raul who played Lena’s ex also commented on that behavior. They use social issues to attack everyone and then show they don’t really care about supporting a show that actually has the representation THEY say they are not getting. 

I was bored by James and Kara. Nothing to do with him being black. I found him cute with Lena at first but then it became a bad relationship for him to keep. But if you (always a general you, not YOU-YOU anon) accuse me of shipping Kara with someone else (Mon El) only because I’m racist and don’t want her with James, that’s the only reason, and then you start insulting James like hell for being with Lena, you basically said it yourself that it’s racism, and on top of it you used his being black and the ‘you are racist’ card as props to attack people, and then disregarded him and the actor as soon as you didn’t need it anymore, and that sounds also racist to me. As well as how pretending to care about trans issues only to ignore the trans character after you stop needing it is using that character/actress and it’s transphobic, if you ask me. 

I’m not saying it’s everyone, I’m not saying it’s all those shippers, I’m not saying personal taste doesn’t count, but come on. Just admit you only care about your ship and it’s not about ‘moral’ reasons, that’s fine, but make it a social issue, and then turn around and ignore episodes about canon representation and downvote them and ask people to boycott episodes. How can you also not find ANYTHING but Lena interesting in a show that isn’t about Lena? So many choices, and yet.

 At least this is my opinion, and seems to be the opinion of all the people who liked posts and reblogged. Again, there is a lot of stuff to talk about so  the answer is chaotic, but to sum it up:

1) if you build a whole case around the fact that your fanon ship (Kara and Lena) is about representation too, about gay rights, and how much you care about it, and have spent years telling everyone else that they are racist and homophobic because they ship other things, and then you don’t even make a peep about the representation you are getting and just complain about your fanon ship, which by the way up until now involves a white, straight, woman, you are using social issues to prop a ship you like and you don’t really care that much about them outside of it. Admit from the beginning it’s about your tastes and that you just like those two women together, it’s not about a show giving you representation, and it’s fine, but you can’t have both. You can’t tell people that your fanon ship is all about representation AND if they don’t like it it’s because of homophobia, and if they like another it’s because of racism, AND simultaneously ignore everything you get that isn’t about said fanon ship.

2) the cast was attacked in the past with racist and transphobic tweets so some people, not everyone, are also motivated by them. Also really, you are telling me that all these people who like Lena but do care about social issues just happen not to like Nia, a trans woman, and not like her ship with Brainy, a man of color, and not like Alex and Kelly, and not like about the whole plot about the guy going after Nia because transphobic, there is just NOTHING interesting to talk about? Either they are using social issues to their advantage which is kinda homophobic and racist and transphobic in itself, or this is a giant coincidence, because there isn’t one of these plots that is worth a post or that won’t make them not complain about the lack of Lena in a show that has all these characters together.

3) for me it’s frustrating to get all this good stuff and then find nothing but comments about Lena in the MAIN tag, where one usually goes after an episode to talk about the episode itself. That’s how tags work in all fandoms except this one. 

4) I’m white, that means that I can’t declare that tumblr deciding not to ship biracial couples in nearly every show where there is one is a matter of tastes or is a matter of racism, it’s not for me to decide, and my personal opinion is that it depends on the person but there is such a racist culture in some places that it can’t not have a role in it. And I’ve seen people of color bring up that yes, it’s about tastes too, but since I’ve also seen many others instead bring up the issue that it’s just happening too much to be a coincidence, that every single time people say a ship is platonic if one of them isn’t white, I feel like it would be racist of me to dismiss those concerns. Because it is a trend and because the racist insults thrown at actors more than once do say that while for some people it is a matter of tastes, for others it’s definitely not just that. Just going to leave this as a little example that represents that hundreds we saw in years:

Part of it is much like Chan culture it's be an asshole valve for all what not able to do in real life versus perceived and actual freedom of others.

That said I can believe that this complaint is legitimate by always prefer something a bit more specific and example especially on the internet we're supposedly you can show things in writing. We're at the very least testimony to understand what you've experienced. Such as an individual instance

For me for the longest time I couldn't be comfortable with/fiction because it seemed like any guy who deviated in the slightest way from straightness with an often weird definition of what that was had to be gay.

I felt called out on that and that's very embarrassed about it. Now a lot of that was my own Hang-Ups. And yet at the same time I didn't feel like they were being particularly wise or inclusive because well frankly I'm more than a few occasions it seems self serve. Such as the character of Dick Grayson who often gets characterize as some Grande sex icon whose ass is constantly goggled and who at least of a DC message support back when they were thing people just couldn't help themselves by saying oh dick is totally gay only he totally isn't.

On one level exposure to this may be more comfortable with the idea. However on another level I just didn't like it. This is led to my current issue with what I call shipping isn't social activism. If you want to coo over an idea that's fine.

But the actual activism comes from how you interact with others in light of that. Too many people want to do the equivalent of wearing an offensive t-shirt and then cry foul when someone so much as gives them a dirty look. At the same time it's like what do you say dress a certain way so that that way you are attacked?

Tell of course there are properties that practically invite this half the Shonen Jump properties very deliberately Court What's called the fuzhoushi audience. Hot guys that are very easy to sexualize in a way that allows them to imagine them with each other. The thing about this when it was Tatu or other girl on girl stuff people at least we're willing to admit that a lot of it was for display and probably appealing than men. When you point out this for women they pretend as if you're being homophobic. Even in the instances he'll be overwhelming instances that this is true it feels tainted as a result for me.

To me all goes back to z u t a r a. I had long experience this weird contradiction with/fiction and Fayette number ideas that this character is queer or not on the basis of subtext. Especially with some characters actually being out and or changed

Avatar The Last Airbender fandom could not have a valid conversation about characterization speculation on World building or any number of things simply because that's how much it dominated the conversation. Weather was the scope of the Fire Nation the nature of their crimes that characterization of one of the major antagonist all of that was subordinate to he wants to make it possible for Katara to end up with Zuko. So what was a completely reasonable and understandable speculatory relationship became this weird thing that dominated and even got back to the production to the point where it had a knock-on effect on Legend of Korra. But this was all defended on the grounds that this was a form of feminism. That a girl wasn't being forced and with a guy that she didn't find attractive and that be transparent appeal for the authors who were male so that a guy could be nice which tied into then ongoing discourse about the nice guy. That is an emotional bully who often appeals to sentiment while trying to control others and have deep-seated antisocial issues behind closed doors or emotionally abusive and manipulative in Intimate Relationships

The weird thing is all of these are valid things to note. We really should let women date whoever the hell they want. And that really is something that guys need to watch out for. getting so caught up in their own emotions and issues that they aren't actually compassionate and considerate about the people in their lives, especially objects of the Romantic affection and definitely romantic partners. But taking this very real phenomena and then immediately applying it as a justification so that that way you could get a bad boy with abs who you constantly saw as not having problems and then inventing problems and exaggerating almost any fault if you can call it that for the designated love interest the storytellers were not teasing and misleading in anyway? really hurt. I like the fact that it was pretty much signposted from the beginning that aang and katara were going to end up together. we didn't spend s

a lot of time as will they won't they so much as how they and can they in light of maturity and circumstance and what this says about them along the way how they contribute to each other in a relationship. That's a lot more satisfying so that when they kiss at the end it didn't feel like a cop-out so much as a sort of crossing of a threshold together and they did this by keeping it more or less in the background but not in a way that I felt detracted too much. It was a really hard balance I don't think they got everything perfect.

For instance I can at least agree on this with critics of the relationship. Katara's feelings were understandably muted so that that way we can continue The Angst of Aang wondering if she will say yes. This feels false. even more so in that he never out and out tells her about what happened with the chakra cleansing ritual.

Like you have all the build-up but there isn't this crossover though I would say that applies to a lot of things in season 3.

But if you went to a avidzkjo and exposed to her videos many of which were quoted in sided or at the very least codified a lot of these arguments it made things incredibly difficult. I know it seems far afield but if you look at a lot of this you can see a lot of the things that I'm experience seeing people sort of Fanboy about gay issues. It's the same level of discourse in the same level of fervor only you don't even get the disconnect that you're talking about fictional people just the same sort of social bullying.

Biscuits the point where someone will have a genuinely heavy emotional reaction where they feel betrayed or hurt when something defies their expectations. Such as staying find me out ya Luke really is that burned out in the Last Jedi. Or your favorite couple doesn't get together, as she had a meltdown series finale.

Or you find out that the woman who was idolized by her surviving family members was a very complex possibly even person who did a lot of horrible s*** even though there was plenty of warning and find posting for that to be the case, Steven Universe.

Obviously not all these are equal nor are they all equally invalid such as what we're talking about. It's just this has been my social experience and so when I see this online I feel this is where it's coming from or at least a similar set of behaviors. At least in my case whenever someone brings up a social issue in terms of validating their opinions it makes me invalidate their opinions and believe that they're just using it to rationalize and Bully me into submission. And since this involves my sexuality I feel used and objectified and not in the good way. It's weird probably because I lack confidence in my own body or looks or life accomplishments but being sexualized and objectified for that and something that I wish I was found attractive for I would not have a problem with. But being bounced out to be a weapon so someone else could win an argument on the internet just feels off. Especially when they say they're doing so for my benefit. When unless they knew that I was gay or into dudes they want and even if they did they would assume that I'd have all the exact same opinions and if ipv ated then they'd snap at me

A similar incident though something different is when on my main someone posted about how we needed to show black women of color with dark skin at feminine and beautiful. I took this as an opening for discussion so I said well one I don't believe that all people can be the same sort of beautiful and that dark skin doesn't off and give off the exact same feel as other skin tones. But even in that case here are some very common pictures of models of women of color or shown being feminine or at the very least no worse than anyone else. Say nothing of the fact that a lot of women of color who are models, i. photoshoots, or what have you are quite in control of their image such as all the various R&B rappers and what have you.

Instead of being engaged with I got several insults thrown at me I was told that I was some sort of bigot or Monster. I wasn't expecting her to immediately agree. But I came in with evidence and examples of how and why I thought differently. At the very least I hope that should clarify a point why she felt that that was more of a thing that Society pushed on her and people like her. Or at the very least give examples of positive representation. What she was aiming for

But nope just dismissal in accusation of how evil and racist and crew line being and how I hate black women.

And this is why I don't think the LGBT part is essential because even though it's born out of some experience with being LGBT and having only Tumblr or social media as your outlet. It has more to do with how you use Tumblr or social media or the internet at your outlet in order to self aggrandize and has very little to do with what their self-aggrandizing with except for to feel better. Maybe much like oppression being more prevalent amongst the LGBT this is why it's a bit more prevalent on lbgt discussion on social media. A sort of preemptive defense for your position. A vicious defense mechanism in order to Mark out your territory and make it so that it's a positivity Brigade and you don't feel challenged or threatening than what you feel should be a space that reinforces you much like you see everyone else being reinforced

You could say the same thing for the various trash nerd fiction. We're being a nice guy with a very superficial set of circumstances that lacks the awareness of how you could look from the outside are bit of a problem. But how if you see or have a different experience even though it's well-meaning can come off as really really creepy. Much akin to say being a black kid really likes sci-fi and even pulp sensibility and then you actually read Edgar Rice Burroughs or Robert E Howard and get this sense of uncomfortableness even with a sense of wonder and awe. You want to eliminate that uncomfortableness or at least have that out of the open. So what are you do spoil everyone's fun or Friday just get along? For a long time it was just get along now there if not trying to spoil everyone's fun at the very least make everyone recognize how it's always been uncomfortable for them. The problem is I suppose a tragedy of the Commons in the immaturity that I point to above. Maybe in your own life you have the equivalent of an Aang but not having the script on his side you have to deal with all the boring and complicated issues of him having a temper that everybody pushes aside and that makes you warm or uncomfortable that everybody just expects you to be as conscious and mother figure. Maybe in your own life you've had to assume or perform by standard so that your sexuality or gender identity was never brought into question but there were always these things that you never looking back that painted it to you or that you wish that others would Express and be shown up as heroic to do so. So you advocate for that in Marco Diaz. Or why this character should totally be gay in addition to them being fine masturbation material which let's face it is hardly A non motivation for plenty of female characters choices and designs.

I know I am guilty of this the character of Coop almost never expresses any real homosexual sentiments. The closest you could say is he's very low expressive in terms of pursuing women, despite obviously having all the markers of someone who should have base instincts. He eats a lot he is crazy about cars and video games. So you would figure in addition to that he would have some sort of p*** habit or at the very least leer at women. Now the easiest explanation is he was on the TV y7 show and thus would not be able to show that but he is held in direct contrast and comparison to his best friend who was all about trying to pull chicks and often hit on them. But even then basic writing kicks in. See the very standard fat girl/guy who is horny next to the thin hot chick who desperately wants to find love but isn't all that perverse... until you step back and realize she probably dates way more dudes it's just the presentation where she doesn't come off as horny as her fat goofy friend. In fact when you set back you realize this is a really really common trick and not just with horniness but almost any other trait it's generally why Sidekicks exist. But at the same time it's very easy because of how he appeals to me personally both in terms of hobbies emotional talents and Circumstance for me to project a reciprocal sexuality onto Harold

So really I shouldn't be all that mad at/shippers. Many of them are gay or lesbian or just kind of interested in the idea. As someone who's had a 20-plus your fascination with Asian culture without actually learning the language or studying a religion or any other thing would be a bit hypocritical of me to get on my pants about how you can't be into this culture or thing as a fandom if you're not going to be serious about it. I suppose my problem is hey treated as a fandom but if so that's all it is don't use it as some sort of aspect of social justice or activism

But it feels like for the last 10 plus years that's all it's been used as. So effectively It's Made fandom for me at least online very difficult to enjoy even when I want to engage and social discussions and see diverse stories and characters. I don't even mind feminist critique so long as we understand feminism is a model not the unvarnished truth. It's something to consider how something can come off another form of history that you should learn in integrate. But instead it's become sort of like this weird warfront by which you ban everyone else. Part of that is the opposition to an even being discussed. But another part is how the discussion is brought up which inevitably is well I've had my otaku expiration date I want to be respectful person and now I want to rag on everybody else's way of being mature. A lot of article writers and Community leaders went through this very common face very publicly and very openly started becoming judgmental of Their audience and their fellows while also lowering their access and putting it behind a pay wall. Simply put they start treating what was once their friends to one degree or another as a resource. And this whole political or social issue mongering feels a way of rationalizing that as if that's what makes them better than everyone.

I want to start a conversation where you treat me as an authority and don't actually engage with me unless it's to give me money

Tumblr is one of the only places on the internet you can come to and express how jokes aimed at cishets can negatively impact LGBT+ people and even young kids who internalize these kinds of things and find people who find ways to say that “it isn’t true” and that “only cishets get upset over it” as if those jokes also don’t contain collateral damage towards LGBT+ people and cause young kids to hate themselves because they’re constantly the target of, honestly, shitty and awful jokes aimed at their sexuality.
