ok. so. the number one anti anders argument i hear from da2 is “i hate the way he treats fenris and merrill” and from a human / elf standpoint, thats completely valid.

however, when it comes to him and fenris in their banter, and how they trigger each other, it is a very different situation.

putting behind cut bc it gets lengthy, and mentions of abuse, slavery, gaslighting, ptsd

they are both escaped survivors of abuse and slavery, both on the run, on different “sides”, both trying to convince each other that they are right and the other side is wrong. and their side has had it worse. i dont know if this is a common thing, but i know for myself, i have been there. i’ve had “friends” that have constantly invalidated me and almost asked me to “prove” that my abuse was real, constantly gaslighting me to the point where I got angry and turning on them.

fenris and anders alone are not bad people. they are both fighting by hawkes side for 7 years in kirkwall, trying to help in this shithole town because people are suffering. the poor are suffering, anders runs a free clinic to heal the poor people, and fenris is always willing to go after the (endless) number of slavers trying to take people away to work them to death. they just simply do not get along in certain situations.

if you take them together during a quest where youre forced to make a decision templars or mages, they will both have their opinions, and talk about it to hawke, and bicker at each other. which, given their nature as people, and their background, is so normal. yes you will win or lose approval as hawke, but as far as their banter, you cannot intervene. which, does kind of suck, but you know what? hawke is not their parent. fenris and anders are grown ass men. they can fight each other, and they still work together. neither one of them threatens to leave hawke, neither one of them *actually* fights each other. they dont try to kill each other. they just fight with words. (which yes, as someone whose suffered emotional abuse, i know how much words hurt). but both of them say exactly what is on their mind. they dont let anything fester.

both of them take things too far. anders says god awful racist things. fenris says anders former lover deserved to die. (not to say that they are the same at all, just that these are the worst things that come to mind). as i said, they are both victims of abuse, they both suffer ptsd. not excuses.(i dont think kirkwall really knows about ptsd) they are caught up in the moment. they are triggered by what is happening with hawke, with the other, what is being said and done, and they feel like they’ve lost control in that moment. plus, neither one gives a royal shit about each other. anders, to fenris is just another mage. fenris, to anders is a templar apologist. all they have in common is hawke and a common goal to help kirkwall.

i’ve seen some pretty nasty fenris hate, but a lot of anders hate comes down to old fashioned ableism. he “whines” too much. he talks too much about his trauma. talk about a privileged position. i guess if youve never been traumatized, it would be “annoying”. or maybe you have, or you had a good support system. you had a good therapist or friends / family. lots of people have not. anders had nobody, except maybe karl, who was immediately killed. anders had the warden, who we don’t really know where they are. and justice. who we know is a part of anders, but they dont really ‘talk’, they more feel each other.

fenris is open and honest about his trauma, and is pretty good with it. (i think). he sits down and has a conversation about it over a bottle of wine. anders talks about it here and there. he is open about it, but hes full of anger, rightfully so. hes not angry at hawke, in fact hes very appreciative for hawke. and if youre blue/purple he shows affection and appreciation for it. (both anders and fenris get hostile at a hawke that is rivaling them, thankfully).

point is, survivors are allowed to be angry. survivors are allowed to talk about their trauma. hawke is their friend, other companions are their friend too. if other companions can randomly talk about their lives, their sex lives and random shit, it should be assumed that heavy topics are okay.

at any rate, yes, as a human, anders is an asshole. (not for the chantry explosion, that was completely necessary) but, his trauma is completely valid. and im sick and fucking tired of that being erased. people in this fandom have sympathy for cullen??? but not anders??? cullen made a CHOICE to be a templar. anders did no such thing.

people always want fenris and anders to be friends, but honestly, within da2, i dont see that happening. maybe, years after. not necessarily when the mage vs templar shit is over, because that never really ends, but when they get some time alone, to think things over. to REALLY get to heal. to get some self love, reflection, everything they need. then they can meet on equal ground.

i legit did not see this coming at ALL but im a lil annoyed that i got tricked into joining the werewolves but seem to not be allowed to join vampires (i know if you get attacked by a vampire you have a chance of catching vampirism from them but like. vampires are mostly just Enemies like bandits or w/e) 

farkas says the. silver hand or whatever they’re called are “bad people who don’t like werewolves” but arent they doing the same thing the dawnguard are doing. i dont understand the werewolf/vampire lore in this at all like

vampires are mostly just enemies, there’s a league dedicated to hunting them who seem to be mostly considered heroes, the guards mention these hunters positively, they recruit openly in whiterun

vampires seem to be pretty universally hated and considered evil

but the companions, a pretty highly respected guild, are all werewolves (it’s probably not totally common knowledge, but they are, ) the werewolf hunters are depicted as the bad guys, every werewolf ive met so far has been a friendly npc / at least someone you can hold a conversation with, while every vampire has been just an Enemy

the companions seem to be able to control their werewolf powers and transform at will rather than randomly, but the guy in falkreath cant control it and murdered a child/is outcast by society 

so i guess “its ok to be a werewolf If you can control it” seems to be the verdict here but then i havent seen anyone claiming its ok to be a vampire if you can control it?? i dont know skyrim’s vampire rules but usually they’re able to survive on animal blood or by like, consensual feeding that doesnt take enough to kill the host. werewolves and vampires both can’t necessarily help what they are but it seems like way more of a choice to become a werewolf. i guess vampires Have to drink blood and werewolves dont Have to hurt people but they cant. help that

A Tharja Take, as I see her as a character.

First of all, I want to clear some things up. No Tharja is not perfect, Yes she is a stalker, I know she is not a good person but holy shit people have the dumbest and most shallow reasons to just throw shit around so I decided to make a full blown post about Tharja explaining some things as I see them, this is not meant to change peoples minds or be a “THARJA IS BEST FUCK YOU IF YOU THINK THE OPPOSITE” so do NOT take it as such. Its okay to like a character , its okay to not like a character but you know what its not okay? To hate on the character, insult it and everyone who likes him/her. If you have to fill your blog with hate for a character and insults besides from the obvious point of it not being okay , I am sorry but youve got issues, being passionates okay but being passionate about negativity? Thats messed up 

Besides the fact that many people just insult Tharja because…she exists and dont even bother getting to know the character, the issue is that shes a stalker. Yes its unhealthy, yes its creepy to pretty much everyone , she even looks at Robin while he sleeps. I doubt anyone would try to make an excuse about how its not creepy. Its a negative trait OBVIOUSLY and everyone can agree on that but if you think its all that Tharja is then…thats a dumb stance on the character, every character has its fair share of good and bad traits. While her stalker demeanor is her most obvious and probably biggest trait, theres other things to consider. She was raised by dark mages to the point she believes its “right” for dark mages to be creepy, solitary and have a dark aura like she states in her support with Henry, its like honoring the profession. Its not an excuse but just the way the character is.

Henry states that when someone uses dark magic they get depressed until they kill someone with it or use curses, making the mages go to a state of euphoria and causing drastic changes in their mood, attitude and personality.

Tharja is by no means a good person but not necessarily bad. She knew Gangrel was a shitty king and hated the kind of king he was, she knows the difference between “good” and “evil” and stays loyal to Chrom. She knows how dangerous dark magic can be and knows the effects it can have on people , hence why she doesnt target her own army or condone the use of it. Doesnt take away the fact that she enjoys murdering and cursing but knows the dangers about them.

Only in Robins support she begins as a “good” person, I believe theres not a single support where she starts conversation and in some, like in Donnels case, she sends him off to a cave to search for ingredients or something? I dont remember but think its something around those lines. She doesnt really begin being friendly but youd be amazed how caring and sweet she gets in her supports, and they dont even need to be S supports. In plenty of supports (havent seen all/dont remember all) like Lonqus, Libras, Kellam and Gregors she aids them to overcome their traumas or in general, with Kellam she helps him know about his parents situation and to deliver a message I think. She gets concerned and worried about them, offering her help, at first mentioning some sort of payment but grows fond of them to the point she cares and wants to help. Frederick got wounded in battle indirectly because of Tharja and she tended to his wounds, saying she would accept her punishment knowing that what she did was wrong. In Vaikes support she CRIES at the death of soldiers, blaming herself because she couldnt do enough to prevent it. Tharja is not just a “shitty thot stalker” , shes kind and caring, shes undoubtedly a stalker, and not a good person but it doesnt mean she is a bad one.

I really have no idea why they call her a thot unless its a joke, since her outfit makes sense…living in a literal desert sounds hot and exhausting, living her whole life in it I assume she wanted to wear something comfortable, I know I would. Not to mention she doesnt even realize how revealing her outfit is or just not paying attention to it, if she did or wanted to be an actual thot there wouldnt be any reason for her to hide her breasts with her book 24/7 and the most important part, get incredibly ashamed about it when Cordelia points it out. She even needs to use a talisman to hide her embarassment for gods sake. Not to mention she wants to kill the men who talked about her assets when Nowi pointed it out, she despies men and people who care only about appearance, made known in Vaikes support.

One cant really argue about her obsession with the avatar and say its okay to get married to someone else and call them your 2nd most important person in your life I completely agree.

Moving on to the “abuse”. Let us not forget theres more than one timeline involved, where the MC becomes Grima and the one youre playing the game. In MC->Grima timeline she does hex Noire constantly….let us make a quick recap. In that future , where everyone is pretty much dying, where the MC is thought to be dead (Tharjas number 1 person) , where theres nowhere to run, everythings gone to shit and some people do argue that the reason behind Tharjas constant hexing was to make Noire more resistant to magic although theres no proof. Now, the most important thing about all this is…the tharja from that timeline is a DIFFERENT Tharja. Its a separate dimension, making all people there different in one way or another to the people in the main dimension. To explain it in two different ways , are you the same person you were 5 years ago? Im sure youre not , no one is. To put it in even simpler terms…why dont people hate Robin? He killed Chrom and pretty much everyone right? Because it was another timeline and not the actual MC, simple as that.

- dwarf sorceress/bard but a dancer - she’s mute, so she casts spell while dancing - travelled with a travelling circus - ran away from her home in the Underworld bc she’s transgender and feared that her father wouldn’t understand - her powers come from the storm (stormborn bloodline) - Taro’s nickname for her is “Lady Thunderdwarf” - Taro is also a very good friend of her, he sings for her and she dances - sometimes when she dances she summons the rain unconsciusly - her name means “happy” or “cheerful” in Italian - cinnamom roll, too good for this world, too pure - hates little and close spaces - has a birthmark that is suspiciously similar to the holy symbol of the god of the wind but?? maybe it’s a coincidence??? maybe not??? who knows - at first she can only talk with Kevin bc he’s the only one in their “party” that knows sign language but then they teach it to everyone - she and Kevin are really great friends bc they both know how it feels to be an outcast - didn’t believe in love at first sight until she met Zero - “ALLEGRA STOP THROWING MAGIC AT MY DOG HE’S BITING THIN AIR YOU’LL MAKE HIM FEEL SAD” - never came out to her dwarven family, and she regrets that a little - but she’s still scared, so she doesn’t write to them - she has two brother (one older and the other younger; the former has died) and a younger sister; her mother died when she was little so she doesn’t remember much - she doesn’t know, but her father cares deeply about her, even if he still thinks of her as a “him” - family is very important to dwarves, and she feels that Ume and Kevin and the other are like a family to her now - before she met Taro, when she was still travelling with the circus, she danced on the music of Kakeru, a young bard from the Eastern continent that is the Kukize that is very good at playing the shamisen and teached her how to read his native language and told her the myths and the legends of his land. she teached him the sign language and how to read dwarven runes - she can forge things bc that’s a thing that every dwarf learns, but she is no master of that art - i love her so much asklabaksdsksfgagsds

Drabble prompts! Get Me, for Athera!

im not a drabble purist, so i hope u dont mind that this isnt exactly 100 words and its never gonna be.

the eyes of the shemlen burned into Athera’s back as she headed for the alienage, but she paid them little attention. there were far more important things to worry about than a few merchants in a middle sized town.

As always, the reaction in the alienage was mixed. Athera gave a polite smile and a nod to a woman pushing her son’s pointing arm out of sight.

“Its alright. I don’t mind a bit of curiosity.”

the boy looked up at his mother with big, pleading eyes. “alright then, if she doesnt mind.”

one hour later, Athera is surrounded by a small crowd of curious city elves asking every question under the sun.

“what are those things on your face?”

“how do you get food?”

“who were the emerald knights?”

“wait we had other gods?”

the sun crawls across the sky as Athera answers question after question, her smile never fading. Eventually, she got to her feet. “I need to get going before it gets dark or my clan is going to worry.”

a wave of disappointed mumbles rose from the crowd, but they all understood. some of the elves drifted away, others offered friendly farewells and hopes to meet again. to a few, Athera let slip where her clan could be found for the next few weeks. they were bold souls, maybe they would decide that Dalish life would suit them, but she knew that she couldn’t make that choice for them.

As Athera began to climb the stairs that would take her to the rest of the city, she heard running feet behind her. A woman caught hold of her arm as she turned.

“Excuse me.” she said, desperation plain in her voice. “I’m sorry to bother you but i need to know something. The Dalish, you don’t have Templars right?”

“no, we don’t. we offer our mages support, not imprisonment. its easier to learn your powers and fend off demons when you aren’t afraid for your life.”

something flashed in the woman’s eyes. it looked like it might be hope. “please, could you follow me so we can talk?”

Athera followed, already sure of what the conversation would hold.

once they were safely inside the woman’s house, the door bolted behind them, Athera smiled at the woman. “Can I have your name?”

“Oh! yes I’m sorry. I’m Lilla. My huspand, Arath, is with our children. we need to- I mean-”

“One of your children is a mage.” Even though Athera said it quietly, Lilla’s eyes widened in fear, her ears twitching back to see if she could hear anyone that shouldnt be there.

“Yes.” she said eventually

The silence between them stretched on. Athera didn’t want to pressure the woman, didn’t want to force the information out of her.

“Arath and me have been talking. all afternoon we’ve been talking. we cant hide him forever, and we dont know the first blighted thing about magic. please. will you take him? Fenarris is no trouble, no trouble at all i swear! so quiet youll never even notice him! we need him trained but we cant put him with the Templars and-”

“Its okay.” poor Lilla was approaching tears “I can take him back with me.”

Lilla almost collapsed with relief. “thank you! oh, thank you so much!”

“what about you and Arath? will you be coming as well?”

Lilla’s eyes lit up like a child given a gift, but soon returned to a watery sadness. “you are generous, but we have other children we cannot leave behind, and nothing worth anything to the Dalish.”

“we would take your whole family if we could. it would be much better for Fenarris if you were all to come. i won’t lie to you, it will be no less work living with the Dalish than it is in the cities, but you can be with your family, mage or no, and you need never submit yourself to shemlen oppression again. i think you will find it very satisfying.”

“I-I need to talk to my husband. we never expected this, planning to run off with the Dalish as though we were children.”

“Take all the time you need. its a big decision. staying the night won’t kill me.”

the last wisps of light are fading as Athera first catches sight of the clan’s fires. “Are we there?” asks the dazed child at her side, clutching his pack of essentials tightly.

“yeah. yeah we’re here.”

the family shared a look that Athera felt like an intruder to be witnessing. soft, hopeful smiles with a quivering of nerves underneath.

Lilla turns her hopeful, nervous face directly to Athera. “Okay. lets meet your clan.”

“They’re your clan now too, if you want.”

and so Athera led the family and their mage son into their new life.

urgh this is so dumb and i havent edited it but i need to go to bed so i dont have time! i hope i got across what i was trying to! i feel like i gotta say here, i really like city elves! i just feel like Athera wants everyone to be aware of their options and hates the idea of breaking a family up. and i need to be clear. she is rescuing Fenarris from the circle and the templars, not the elves from the alienage. i dont even know anymore but if i obsess over this for much longer its gonna burn a hole in my brain so here, hope u enjoy.
