Having a feedback loop memory of when my coworker was with a customer and her son called the bank. I picked up the phone and he asked "hi is my mom there?" and I said "Yeah. She's with a customer at the moment. Do you want me to put you on hold or have her call you back in a little bit?"
And, while my coworker was still with the customer, she whirled on me and asked "Is that my son??"
I nodded, as one does. So she yelled, as one usually doesn't: "Don't EVER tell my kids I don't have time for them!!"
(This was in front of the customer, I did not see their reaction because I was too busy wondering if my coworker was going to launch herself at me and rip the phone from my hand).
"Oh," I said lamely. "I'm sorry."
... honestly I don't remember what happened after that. I think my memory blanked it out. But she chilled out at some point and talked to her son and everything was fine and dandy.
But I guess the point is, like... I'm sorry you emotionally neglected your kids for years/are a workaholic/your mom raised them, and are now trying to make up for lost time. That's not my problem. Maybe don't scream at me when a customer is in the lobby?? And go to therapy instead?? idk what to tell you.
