Hey, there! I appreciate that you love the story, but I'm afraid unless you got yourself a working time machine, you are going to have a problem with that!
Tumblr media
The story has currently only 13 chapters and neither chapter 14 or 15 have been written or posted yet. You can't read what doesn't exist. ^^°
I'm afraid you'll have to be patient and wait for them. ;)

well. i knew i was gonna eat a lot going out w friends tonight but i feel fucking obese. and now i have to go out to lunch tomorrow too for wedding planning AND easter on sunday. i may have to break my lax rule again because this is just ridiculous…..
i did burn 750 cals working out earlier and also from walking which is good but still ate over my budget. fiancée got irritated with me bc i was upset and felt like fasting wasn’t worth it because of how soon we’ll be meeting our families tomorrow (i’ll only be able to fast like 12hrs instead of my usual 18) and i just wish i could make them understand that there’s no reasoning with the ed like it’s just impossible and maybe i just need to be sad. god i feel like shit
at least we’re meeting for easter dinner which means i can fast literally for like. over 24 hours after our saturday lunch. AND work out again since i was supposed to take a break today but ended up burning like 500 calories alone in the gym before seeing our friends 🤪 so tomorrow will be my rest day and then during my 24hr fast i’ll burn at least another 500 to make up for this fuck up. it doesn’t help that i’ve already gained anyway, altho think my period might be starting and that’s why my weight is fluctuating the way it is… maybe all this eating will just restart my metabolism?? that’s just wishful thinking tho…..i know im a fat stupid pig and that’s all i’ll ever be!!!!!!!!

The short version: We had a serial thief at the flower shop. She’s retired recently and I think that due to Covid she really means it this time.
The long version? hoooo boy, here we go.
This story, and others, are viewable on Tablo
There are rules and there are rules.
In dealing with shoplifting in retail, there are rules on how one engages with a thief. The handbook, if there were one, would consist of a single word.
Don't.
Don't pursue, don't interrogate, don't accuse. Let them take the merchandise, let them get away. Let them return the Cricut machine for an equivalent amount on a gift card to be exchanged once again for drugs.
Let them.
There is no handbook on how to handle Flower Thieves. Prior to working in a flower shop, I never thought that this was a problem.
Life is surprising.
 I'm sure some of you have figured that out by now.
The Flower Thief is notorious, and she has a system. There are days when you simply know that she's going to be in.
"Break the heads off the flowers before you throw them away," Grandpa will say. "She's going to be here tonight, I think."
And sure enough, she would be. At 6:45, a quarter til we close- the Thief would announce her arrival. Loudly.
"Heeeeey, baaaaaaby!"
The very first time I encountered the Flower Thief, she came in through the back door.
"Oh Hiiiii, Darlin'- ain't seen your face around here: you must be NEW! I'm Wren, you know- like the bird? Well, Kyle and I have an agreement that I come and work for y'all sometimes. You should take out this trash, it stinks to high heaven. Anyways, nice talkin' to ya, see ya later."
I may only be a little bit psychic, but I've spent enough time around liars to know insincerity when I see it. Kyle, at the time, was the manager of our store and I have it on record that he's tried to throw her out of the building once or twice.
While I was taking out the trash, her pile of purchase became so tall it towered over her. I watched Clark massively undercharge her for the sake of getting her to go away.
She has a pattern.
She comes in during the design classes because she knows that when there's twenty people in the store, there's not enough people to watch her and make sure she's not stealing. "There's a class today," she asks as if it's not literally every Tuesday. "Don't worry I know you all wanna get out of here on time."
The Flower Thief announces her presence in a grand way and then makes her way to the back to grab a trash bag or an empty box and then proceeds to bury any spare parts she finds in the cooler in the trash bag, hiding them under the things that she's actually buying.
After that, she checks the garbage cans for things we might have thrown away that will last another three days and stuffs them underneath her other ill-gotten goods.
Just when you think she's finished, she'll go through her pile of flowers and say: "You know what? I don't need this eucalyptus." And she'll go back into the cooler with it, stuff it in her purse, and walk back to the register.
And when she's all done being sneaky, she asks one of us to come ring her out.
This is the part that no one wants to do. Because ringing out the Flower Thief means haggling with the Flower Thief.
"Oh baaby, you know I don't pay those prices."
"Oh baaaby, I only pay $19 for roses."
"Oh baaaaaaaaaby, those carnations were on special."
She'll talk you down to under $100 with a sob story:
"Oh baaaaby, you know I'm donating this spray to the family. It's for that woman you know- you know the one. She got herself murdered a couple nights ago? Two children and she was pregnant too! Pregnant! Can you believe it? Who murders someone with child? What's the world coming to? So I need a good discount to make sure we treat this family right because they got a looooong road ahead of them."
"Oh baaaaaaby, you know this one's for that car crash over on Cleveland Avenue? I hear he was taking care of his dying father himself, so it's such a shame for him to go first like that."
"Oh baaaaaaaaaaaaaaby, this is for that little boy that shot himself, isn't that sad?"
Thank you, Sister Mary Loquacious.
And you nod because you don't want to come off as an uncaring sociopath. And while you're nodding and adjusting the price for her sad, sad consequence and mulling over how good she is for donating to these people in their time of need, she steals some greens from the trash can and sticks them in her bag.
She hands you crisp $100 bills. You check them and she makes jokes about how she printed them this morning. They're legit. Counterfeiting isn't why she went to prison.
What she went to prison for was drug trafficking.
"Do you need some help," you ask, trying to be a good citizen.
"Oh no, I got it," she insists. "I'll make it in two trips. I'm stronger than I look!"
And don't you dare get caught looking to see what she put in the bag or she will give you one hell of a lecture.
By the time all of this has passed, the class will be over and there will two minutes left in the work day. She's spent thirty-seven minutes in the store. Your register is unbalanced because now you don't have enough small bills to balance it and only have one $100 bill to get you through tomorrow.
And that's why there are rules.
On occasion, a new person will break the rules not knowing that there's rules. One such occasion was when Clair decided to be helpful.
"You know what? I don't need this eucalyptus," Wren said.
"Oh! I'll put it back for you," Clair suggested. And before Wren could protest, it was out of Wren's hands and nowhere near her purse.
It was mentioned to Sage, who only worked for us one summer, that Wren had failed to pay for something and she immediately chased her out into the street.
Wren drives very fast.
If you cross her too many times, she'll make sure you never forget it. One day, she stomped her way in through the front door, angry.
"You ain't treated me better than a damn THIEF," screamed the Flower Thief.
Grandpa, who was helping Blue make a wedding bouquet at the time, departed from the desk. "Beg pardon?"
"A thief! You been treating me like a thief ever since they made you manager and I'm sick of it! I see you bringing in your henchmen, following me in the cooler, chasing me down the street. Treat me with some damn respect."
Words were exchanged. They were not kind. We thought we'd seen the end of her.
But she was back one week later, doing the same damn thing.
So now there are rules.
If you make something and there's an excess of flowers left over from the pack, you have to make something out of the leftovers or she'll pick through them and stuff them in her bag.
If you cannot make something out of them, you must throw them out.
If you throw them out, you must break the heads off first.
The trash cans must be emptied every night before 5:00.
We do not keep trash bags in plain sight.
Break down all empty boxes, or she will use them in place of trash bags.
Do not leave any food or drink where she can find it.
Do not leave any half-used rolls of floral tape where she can find it.
Do not let her know anything about you- lest she use it against you.
If you speak of a Thief, you summon a Thief- speak quietly, and never her name or you invite trouble.
The basic rules one makes when dealing with pests. Or fairy-folk.
There are rules and there are rules and there are rules.
If you want to keep a pest away, you make these sorts of rules. But if you want to get rid of a pest indefinitely, you have to remove their food source. And Wren's food source was her discount.
You start exercising your right to say 'no' to a customer in small ways.
She saw a bunch of carnations in the trash and said:
"Oh baby, these are still good! I'll take them off your hands for you!"
"They've been sitting without water for hours."
"They're still good!"
"They were out in the sun."
"Oh baby, I've been working with flowers for 40 years and I know that these will still be fine for a couple of days!" She picks a bunch of them out of the trash and shoves it in my face. "See, it's still stiff- it's still good!"
"Okay," I said. And before I could stop myself: "Full price."
Her eyes just about popped out of her skull. If it were just a little bit colder, I would have been able to see steam coming out of her ears.
We stared at each other for about a minute, waiting for the other to flinch. She took the bunch away from my face and threw them back into the trash. While she was in the cooler, I took the liberty of snapping the heads off of them and burying them further into the garbage.
And so began a war between the flower shop and the Flower Thief.
She came in: every single night. And each night, she got me.
Again.
"Oh no, baby! These carns are supposed to be 39 cents a stem. I can bring up the email."
"Sure." She brings up the email. "I see that they are 39 cents but... this was for Saturday."
"Yea, and I bought those carns on Saturday and you charged me full price!"
"Saturday."
"Yeah."
"You didn't buy these on Saturday. You bought them Friday."
"Well I didn't know that they'd be on sale, so I need them for that price because I didn't know they'd be on sale."
"The sales are one-day only. I can't adjust a sale from Friday to reflect Saturday's sale... on Sunday."
She made a noise that reminds me somewhat of a cement mixer.
 And again.
"I got a bad banner last time, can you print me a new one?" She shows me the banner in question. It's white. The 't' and the 'h' in 'mother' ran together.
"Sure."
"Okay, I need it to say 'Beloved Mother' and I want it in pink."
"Sure."
I print it. I ring her up $5.
"Oh baaaaaaby, no, that one should be free."
"Grandpa said- banners start at $5."
"Oh, but you sold me a bad one last time."
"We haven't sold you a banner in three weeks. How long have y'all had that body sitting in your cooler?"
She grumbled, and paid.
 And again.
"I swear you been workin' every night this week! You must be tired," she said, nerves plain in her voice. "When do you get a day off?"
"When the work is done."
"That ain't what I'm askin'. When's your next day off, baby?"
"I stop working when the work is done, Wren."
She narrows her eyes, which is a fun change from them bugging out of her skull like a fruit fly. "You don't ever get any days off?"
"When the work stops, I rest."
 And again.
"I'll be in and out, I know y'all want to get out of here on time," she said- announcing her presence to the entire class. She piled her stuff across the register counter and Grandpa began ringing her up.
"Oh baby..."
"No. We're doing away with the discounts."
There are twenty people in the workshop for the class and Grandpa doesn't want to make a scene. She pulls her into the back, and I choose to make my instructions louder to mask the sound of them yelling.
"So you're going to take your hypericum berries and you're going to cut the stem to about ten inches-"
"How can you do this to me?"
"And you're going to slowly fill the vase with these berries to kind of set the shape of the arrangement."
"After all these years and this is how you treat me?"
"Fun fact- you might know hypericum berries as their more common name: St John's Wort! St. John's Wort has been used as a medication for depression prior to modern medicine." You see- I, too, have taken notes from the Chattering Order.
"You can't do this to me," Wren said, stamping her feet like a toddler.
"But I wouldn't recommend eating them. However, they do smell somewhat like baked brown sugar."
Stamp, stamp, stamp.
Wren threw herself into the cooler and began putting a bulk of her flowers back.
"This is robbery," I heard her say to Grandpa at the register.
"Is it now?"
 And again.
She came in and immediately reached for a half-empty box of oasis bricks (the green sponge material that we use to hold flowers.) She said few words to me, few at all. She talked to Carrie about how she was going out to the country for awhile, to take care of her nephew's property. She needed to stock up. And oh- don't worry about it, she knows what she's doing. She's part of The Family.
She is in no manner of speaking, a member of The Family that owns this shop. Not even a third cousin.
I saw her beeline for a rose I'd set in the trash. I picked it up, opened my mouth, and bit the head off of it. She stood in the middle of the workshop, absolutely stunned.
Rose petals have the vague texture of arugula, by the way. Slightly sweeter, though. Tough to swallow in one go.
She ran back into the cooler and didn't talk to me.
I began taking down numbers.
27 bricks of oasis. One pack of roses. Ten calla lilies. 1/2 pack of assorted greens.
I punched the numbers in to the register. As if sensing something was amiss, she emerged from the cooler.
"$54? What do I have that's $54?"
"The oasis. They're $2 each."
"Oh no baaaaaby, they're $1."
"I can text Grandpa and ask her."
"... that won't be necessary. Why are you charging me $22.50 for roses? You know my prices by now!"
"22.50 is the price for a pack of roses."
"22.50 is everybody prices."
"Welcome to 'everybody.'"
"I ain't paid a price increase in 7 years!"
"The price of milk went up, Wren. So does everything else."
She was seeing red, I knew it. There's a vein in her forehead that pops out when she's angry and it's the same shape as the river that runs through my home town. She sized me up, as if wondering if she could take me.
I'm 256 pounds of 4H beef, and I have a knife. Try me.
"I'm gonna call Kyle on this."
"Do it." A lifetime of retail has made me immune to 'I'd like to speak to the manager.'
She grumbled and put things back. Carrie offered to watch her, I held up my hand.
"Can you do something for me  on these carns? They're the last pack in there and they're lookin' kinda ratty."
"9.50."
"9.50's the regular price."
"Regular price is $14."
"No it ain't."
"Is today. You're taking our last pack and we need those for funerals."
She put them back.
She gave me a credit card. It seemed fake, but it ran. Every time I see here, she's got a different card. Did she print this one this morning, too? At least she stopped trying to sell me on Bitcoin. As you can see, it made her incredibly wealthy.
She gathered her things and left. "Guess I'm getting the rest of my flowers from KROGER!"
There are things you want to say. Like... I hope they enjoy your company just as much as we do. Or: Haven't graced them with your presence in awhile, huh? But at the time, it was better just to watch her leave with her minuscule bunch of flowers. I get a choice in where I loan my voice.
Not here.
Is it over? Nah. She'll be back for another round. But one day she'll finally retire in the way that she's always threatened to. And then? Then it can be as over as it ever will be.
It is shocking to come from a history of retail, where you're not allowed to even hint at the idea of a customer being wrong, where you have to override every single price change to get the scores up, where you have to just let them steal your things and pull the wool over your eyes...
... to flat-out telling someone 'no.'
"No."
It's such a great word.
There are rules and there are rules.
And there are thieves that the rules are made for.
And there are words like 'no.'
And all those things are magic in very human ways.

Natasha stared up at the tall building with two bags of food in hand. She was about to surprise you with some lunch, considering you haven’t been able to take a single break the entire week.
Seriously, even when you were at home, you’d be working on paperwork or taking call after call from your company partners. You’d then go back to work the next morning and completely neglect your own needs, the only thing you’d focus on was anything work-related.
You were the CEO of a major telecommunications company and things have been super hectic around your office. You barely had time to breathe with everything that had been going on, so, Natasha thought that it would be a good idea to give you a nice surprise.
She made her way into the building and got into one of the fancy elevators, quickly tapping the button to the top floor and stood in silence, lively elevator music filling the small space.
When the doors opened, she walked out and was greeted by your secretary; Megan.
“Hi, Ms. Romanoff. Ms. L/N is just in her office working on some paperwork. She has a meeting in 20 minutes, though.”
Megan sent Natasha a friendly smile. The redhead simply nodded and mumbled out a small ‘thank you’ before opening the door to your office.
She was met with the sight of you hunched over your desk. The light poured into the tall windows in the room, providing sufficient lighting.
You glanced up from your papers at the sound of the door closing softly. Natasha smiled at you and held up the bags of food. Your lips turned upward at the sight of your girlfriend of five years.
“Honey, what are you doing here?” You asked as you got up from your desk, quickly making your way over to greet the Russian. You pulled her in by the waist and into a tight hug.
“I thought you could use some lunch. You haven’t been taking care of yourself and I’m here to change that.” Natasha mumbled into your neck as her arms rested on your shoulder, gripping onto the food she still had in her hands.
“Baby, you didn’t need to come all the way here. I’m fine, just been super busy lately is all.” You pulled back slightly and stared into green eyes.
“Yes, I needed to. I can’t just standby while you’re practically drowning in stress.”
Natasha got out of your embrace and made her way over to your desk, placing the food down and turning around, leaning onto the table with two hands gripping the furniture behind her.
“I’ll manage, it’s kind of my job.” You let out a small giggle, rounding the desk and sitting on your chair. Natasha turned in her spot as you patted your lap.
“Come on, let’s eat the food you brought. I have a meeting soon so we gotta be quick.”
Natasha walked toward you and sat in your lap, your arms circling around her waist. She opened the food and laid out the plates of Thai food.
Natasha fed you and herself. You both sat in silence, simply enjoying each other’s company.
Occasionally, Nat would mimic an airplane or train noise as she moved the spoon closer to you, laughing as she abruptly shoved the utensil into your mouth.
After fifteen minutes had passed, you looked at your watch and sighed. You had another meeting that would probably be ridiculously long for no reason.
“I’m sorry sweetheart, I have to get going. I have a meeting in five.”
You moved to get up, but Natasha refused to move off of your lap. You raised an eyebrow at her, the redhead giving you a stern look.
“Take the day off.” You shook your head in protest. You couldn’t take a day off, not now at least.
“Honey, you know I would if I could, bu-“ Natasha immediately cut you off, pressing her lips against yours before pulling back quickly.
“You can though. You’ve been working more than necessary! Please, it’s not even a full day off, it’s half a day.”
Natasha gave you the best puppy dog eyes and pout that she could, knowing how it affected you. Of course, she ended up winning.
“Fine, fine.” You muttered out, leaning forward and pressing a button on your desk-side phone, paging Megan, who sat just outside your office.
“Yes, Ms. L/N?” Your assistant’s spritely voice rang through the phone.
“Megan, could you please clear the rest of my day? I’m taking the day off.” You heard some shuffling on the other end of the phone before the woman replied.
“Okay, your schedule has been cleared and your meetings have been rescheduled to tomorrow.”
Natasha, who could faintly hear the other end of the conversation, smiled triumphantly and placed a soft kiss on the side of your neck.
“Thank you.” And with that, you hung up and returned your attention to the beaming redhead in your lap.
“You never play fair.” You mumbled against her cheek as you placed a gentle kiss against her skin.
“All is fair in love and war, moya lyubov (my love).” You rolled your eyes at the Russian while holding back a smile.
She got out of your hold and stood up, grabbing both of your hands and forcefully pulling you to your feet.
“Let’s go! I know a few things we could do today.” Natasha spoke seductively and sent you a little wink before grabbing the trash on your desk and throwing it away in the small trash can you had under the table.
You watched with a wide smile as she waltzed toward the door, making sure to sway her hips a little more, exaggerating the movement. There was an extra spring in her step that caused her red locks to bounce with each movement.
She turned her head around when her hand was on the doorknob, smirking at you.
ㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤ
“Are you coming or not?”
ㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤ
“I have a feeling I will be soon.”
•❅──────────────── ‎⧗ ────────────────❅•
4 hours later
You laid in bed with Natasha by your side, her head resting on your shoulder with an arm around your torso.
After hours of love-making, you guys had finally gotten to relax. You both just stayed there in each other’s arms, appreciating the moment.
“Honey?” Natasha spoke, breaking the silence.
You tilted your head to look down at her, the redhead already staring up at you as you hummed.
“Have you ever thought about what you want your future to look like?”
This wasn’t the first time you guys have discussed the future. You’d both mention small tidbits of your aspirations and goals, but never went too far into the details of it all.
“Well, first starters, you’re definitely there.” Natasha smiled up at you with bright eyes. It absolutely warmed your heart to see her so full of joy.
“Really?” You nodded your head and kissed her forehead, the redhead briefly shutting her eyes as your soft lips met her skin.
“Really.” You pulled back, brushing your nose against hers. The redhead placed a hand on your cheek, as connected your foreheads.
“Well, I see you in mine too. Maybe we would end up leaving this penthouse and buy an actual home together.”
You nodded with a wide smile. The thought of buying a property with the woman you adored had you giddy.
“Yeah, definitely. Then maybe we could have little rascals of our own running around. We could find a surrogate or maybe even adopt if you’d want to.”
Natasha felt like she was going to melt into a puddle of love. The thought of having children to raise with you filled her with more joy than ever.
ㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤ
“I’d love that.”
ㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤ
The moment was cut off when a loud yawn tore through your body, promoting a little giggle from your girlfriend.
She cuddled closer to you, her arm tightening around your body with a smile on her face.
“Let’s get some rest.” Natasha’s words were slightly slurred, the exhaustion of your previous activities hitting her.
ㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤ
“Yeah, so we can have energy for a round two.”
ㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤ
“Yeah right, more like round ten.”
ㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤ
“Go big or go home!”
ㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤ
“Go to sleep, idiot.”

5 days later
It was a Saturday night and Natasha had practically forced you to not go into work.
Usually, you would go into the office on Saturdays, despite having the day off, to get some extra work out of the way, but your girlfriend was extremely persistent.
So now, here you two were, getting ready to go out for a date night. You had to admit that this was a good idea.
You couldn’t remember the last time you and Nat had gone out on a date; it was a rarity with how busy you both would be majority of the time.
You walked out of the bathroom after brushing out your hair, your heart racing at the sight of your girlfriend clad in a simple black body-con dress that hugged her curves in all the right places paired with a cute, black blazer.
She straightened her hair and did her makeup just the way you liked it.
You stalked over to the woman who stood in front of the full-body length mirror, wrapping your arms around her waist from behind and placing a soft kiss onto her cheek.
“You look gorgeous, baby. I’m so lucky.” Your eyes raked over her figure through the reflection of the mirror before meeting her green ones.
“Thank you, but I’m the lucky one. I swear, if we didn’t have reservations, I’d rip your clothes off and take you right here.”
Natasha’s voice came out husky when you kissed the side of her neck. You sucked on her skin lightly and went to leave a mark, but the Russian turned around in your embrace.
“No marks, not until after dinner at least.” You let out a small whine, pulling her front against yours tightly.
“Oh come on! It’s not like we haven’t ditched our reservations for dinner before. I miss you.”
You tried to go for her neck again, but she flicked your forehead. You stared at her with a look that screamed ‘what the fuck was that for?’
“Don’t give me that look. I’ve been looking forward to having a date night for months. We aren’t missing this. Let’s go.”
•❅──────────────── ‎⧗ ────────────────❅•
Two hours later
Natasha had taken you to one of the best restaurants in New York. You weren’t one for fancy places, you were more of a ‘let’s order takeout and watch tv’ kind of gal, but Natasha absolutely loved luxurious dining experiences.
When you both arrived, the waited immediately escorted you both to the most private table in the house.
The table was set with candles and rose petals were spread across the tablecloth. You were blown away, seeing as the table overlooked the city.
Natasha pulled your seat back for you, placing a soft kiss on her cheek as you sat down. You watched as she rounded the table and sat in the chair across from you.
Her skin was golden as the candlelight brightened up her face, accentuating her green eyes beautifully. She had a cheeky smile on her face and wiggled her eyebrows at you before looking at the menu.
Of course, the redhead ordered the best wine the restaurant had to offer, immediately asking for a bottle of the alcohol.
You two talked about anything and everything over the course of the dinner. You had to admit, this was probably one of the best dates you guys had ever been on, besides your first one, at least.
As you both finished off your meals and were given the check, you noticed that Natasha couldn’t seem to sit still.
She was tapping her fingers against the table anxiously as she gnawed on her bottom lip. You placed your hand on top of hers, stopping the insistent movement.
“Is everything okay, baby?” You asked in concern. It was really unlike Natasha to be nervous, especially during date night.
She was usually relaxed and content whenever you both had time to spend out together.
The redhead sent you a reassuring smile and flipped her hand over, intertwining your fingers before bringing your conjoined hands up to her lips, kissing the back of your hand.
“Never better, hon. Come on, there’s somewhere I want to take you.”
Natasha placed her credit card into the bill holder and waved down a waiter and shortly after, you both walked out into the cool New York air, hand-in-hand.
•❅──────────────── ‎⧗ ────────────────❅•
Your eyes lit up when you noticed where your next destination was; Central Park.
You had always loved the park. There was something so beautiful about the scenery and the usual liveliness of the area that brought you so much peace and comfort.
Natasha led you towards a pond that was located in the heart of the park and you immediately recognized which one it was.
The redhead stopped in her tracks on top of the tiny bridge that hovered over the pond.
“Do you remember this spot?” She asked you as she turned around to face you, hand still linked with yours.
“How could I forget? You took me here on our very first date to feed the ducks, which completely backfired.” You let out a laugh at the memory, Natasha’s cheeks turning red.
“I wouldn’t say it backfired…” The redhead mumbled shyly which only made you laugh harder.
“Honey, you ended up getting attacked by pigeons because you were holding the bread. You walked me home covered in bird shit and your clothes were absolutely torn apart.”
You were practically crying from your laughter and you felt Natasha’s hand heating up in yours.
“It wasn’t funny! I really liked that outfit.” Natasha pouted as your laughter died down.
You placed a kiss onto her pouty lips, her frown quickly replaced with a bright smile.
“Anyway, I took you here because this is where our first date was which obviously resulted in us dating.”
You nodded your head at her words, deciding to remain silent when you noticed she had more to add.
ㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤ
“And, well… this is where I want our last date, as girlfriends, to be.”
ㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤ
You felt your heart sink at her words. Was she breaking up with you right now? It didn’t make any sense! She didn’t ever show any indication that she was unhappy or wanted to leave you.
However, before you could completely break down, Natasha let out a shaky breath, and it was then that you noticed how shaky her hands were.
“Y/N, All my life, I never thought that I’d find love. After all of the things that the Red Room had taught me and forced me to do, I never believed that love was in the cards for me, but then I met you, and everything changed.”
You stared at Natasha curiously. This definitely didn’t sound like a breakup. So what was she going on about?
“I never ever thought that one day, I’d find someone that I’d want to spend the rest of my life with. I never thought that I’d ever want to buy a house and build a family with another person, but god, I’m so fucking happy that I was wrong.”
Your eyes watered when the gravity of the situation finally sunk in. Your thoughts were confirmed as Natasha let go of your hand and slowly bent down on one knee in front of you, reaching her hand into her blazer pocket, revealing the small velvet red box that had been tucked away in the material.
ㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤ
“Baby, these last five years have been the best years I’ve ever had, and it was all because of you.”
ㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤ
Your hands flew up to your mouth as a gasp escaped your lips. There were tears in your eyes as she revealed a gorgeous engagement ring to you.
“Y/N, I want you, every day, for the rest of my life. Will you make me the happiest woman in the world and marry me?”
Natasha’s voice was unstable as she tried to hold back her emotions, but that went out the window when you frantically nodded your head in agreement.
“Yes!” You whispered out in shock. Natasha looked up at you with a wide smile.
“Yeah?” The redhead asked for confirmation and you let out a small chuckle.
“Yes, of course, I’ll marry you! Is that even a question?” Natasha grabbed your left hand shakily and slid the ring onto your finger.
You were both crying at this point. You didn’t care that you were both stood in the freezing cold, in the middle of Central Park.
All that mattered was that this was going to be the beginning of the rest of your life with the woman you loved.
Suddenly, Natasha stood up and picked you up by the waist, twirling you both around.
Honestly, you were surprised she didn’t stumble, considering the fact that she was wearing such high heels. Luckily for you though, she didn’t fall.
You were both laughing like maniacs when she finally stopped spinning. You were like two teenagers in love without a care in the world.
You leaned down, still in her arms, and kissed her passionately.
You could feel all the love and adoration she had for you through the kiss and you prayed to God that she could feel just how much you felt for her too.
When Natasha disconnected the kiss, she placed you gently onto the floor, your arms immediately going around her neck, hers securing themselves around your waist.
“We’re getting married?” She asked in disbelief. Natasha genuinely couldn’t believe that you said yes, even if you never gave her any indication that you would say no.
“We’re getting married.” You reassured her, kissing the tip of her nose, practically melting as her nose scrunched up adorably.
This definitely wasn’t what you expected the night to be like, but you wouldn’t change any detail about it for the world.
ㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤ
You were going to be Y/N L/N-Romanoff.
ㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤ
And that was a name you were going to carry around proudly.
ㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤ

Santa has helpers.
It’s the holidays, and apparently I’m just writing my big giant Jost story in chunks and will eventually get it all put together - she has a name, but that will get revealed when it all comes out.  Have some Christmas with Tyson feels!
The team-imposed shutdown threw a lot of wrenches in the works, as she and Tyson were originally going to spend Christmas together during the tiny holiday break. His family had decided they were going to celebrate the holiday later during the Olympic break to keep them all from having to travel as much. This left Tyson alone for the holidays, but she quickly spoke up and asked if he’d like to come over for a little mini Christmas celebration. Nothing fancy, but a good, hearty, home-cooked meal, maybe some movies and games.
But no, with the sudden outbreaks, the NHL shutdown, and the request that the teams quarantine as much as they could, plans were halted. It hit Tyson harder than her though. He was looking for a nice quiet day to be together, to just enjoy each other’s company. They set a budget on gifts, promising to not try to outdo each other. He thought he had picked out the perfect gift for her, and was really looking forward to getting to see her face when she opened it.
Little did Tyson know though, that she was already working on how to make this all happen despite having to quarantine. It may not be their ideal first Christmas together, but she was sure as hell going to try to make it the best Christmas possible anyway.
The two constantly texted while she was still at work, and video chatted in the evenings leading up to Christmas, but it was easy to tell that Tyson was sad about the upcoming holiday. “So what are you going to do now on the 25th? This sucks so much, you know?”
She could hear the fact he was down, so she decided it was time for a little holiday cheer.
“I was going to surprise you, but I might as well tell you now so plans don’t get made otherwise. I’ve got the 25th all planned out for us.” “Wait, what?” “Alright, so we had planned on having a nice meal, right? That’s still going to happen. You wanted to watch movies? Still happening. Games? I got it down! But you’ll have to wait until Saturday to know how.”
“But… I want to know nowwww!”
“Nope, you gotta wait Jost. Alright I gotta go to bed, some of us still have to work tomorrow.”
“You’re the best babe, you know that?” “I know. Sweet dreams, talk tomorrow.” Tyson eyed the tiny package sitting on the counter next to him, wrapped and tied tight with a tiny bow. He spent a lot of time figuring it out, and even asked Nate to help him pick it. He really hoped she would love it. Nate assured him she would, because not only did Nate know her best of anyone around, but also that Tyson put a lot of thought into it. He was very thankful the store wrapped it for him, otherwise he was just going to throw it into a gift bag with a little paper on top.
On the other hand, she was sure that she had a great gift picked out. The first time she was at Tyson’s apartment, she knew immediately what he needed, whether he realized it or not. Guys are funny like that.
Christmas Eve hit, and she was still working, but at least got off early to go home and start prepping things for Christmas dinner. The ham was defrosted and ready to go into the oven. She prepped her famous potatoes. A nice cranberry salad was created and left to sit overnight in the fridge. Green beans were washed. The two chatted before bed, with her telling Tyson he had to go to sleep… you know the rules - if you don’t sleep on Christmas Eve, Santa does not pay you a visit! He was giddy trying to figure out what she had planned.She did tell him though that they could wait to exchange gifts once the quarantine was over. This bummed him out a bit, but, it was only two days after Christmas they could see each other again.
She woke up early the next morning, busy putting the finishing touches on the plan. Food was cooking, and she sent Tyson the first message of the day.
Okay sleepyhead, wake up, it’s CHRISTMAS!  Tell me what movies you want to watch today.
Tyson thought about it, and sent her a few movies. She picked out which from the list she could make work and sent another text. Open your front door, and look down. Then get on the sofa with that big fluffy blanket. The movie is about to begin!
Confused, Tyson went to the door, and sure enough, looked down to find a box. Opening it immediately, he found a bucket of popcorn and a thermos full of hot cocoa. A note attached said for him to start up his video chat and await further instructions.
A few moments later, her phone started buzzing with the incoming video chat.
“Babe, when did you do this? Why didn’t you knock?” “I didn’t do this… Santa did!”
He laughed at her silliness. She watched him as he got comfy on the sofa, snacks in hand.  The two decided to watch A Christmas Story “together”, as they both laughed at “FUDDDDDDGGGEEEEEEEE” and the leg lamp. He heard a beeping noise in the background of the video chat, and she assured him she’d be back, but promised she was still watching the movie. At the end, she told him to go take a hot shower, and then it would be onto the next surprise - wait for another message.
She hurriedly went to the kitchen, and started filling containers with various food, and threw it all in a thermal bag. Knowing that Tyson loves long hot showers, she had a few minutes to spare as she ran to her car and sped off across the city. Her phone buzzed as she just got to her destination, asking what she was up to.
Me? Nothing at all! Be patient, Santa’s elves are hard at work!
Turning her notifications off so she could sneak around like a ninja, the next event was in motion. She gave herself a few minutes to get away and back on the road home. A quick text to Tyson of Sorry, got distracted with something, give me a couple more minutes happened, and finally she was back home. She dished herself up some of the remaining food, and sent the next Christmas text.
I got word back that the elves have paid you another visit. Check the front door for your next surprise!
Tyson squinted and went back to the front door, and found the bag with a candy cane attached to it.  Bringing it inside, he could already smell things coming from within the bag. Opening it up, he found all the parts of the meal and another note about starting a video chat. With her phone buzzing, she accepted the call and he laughed immediately.
“What are you doing?” He could see she was at the tiny table in her kitchen, with the lights low, but there was clearly garland and lights around it. She sat down with a plate, and smiled. “I thought we should still have Christmas dinner together. I hope you’re hungry!”
Tyson panned his phone camera down to show his plate already full. He sat at the island in the kitchen, as the two ate dinner and chatted.  They talked about what their favorite Christmas memories were going up. He complimented the chef of the meal, causing her to blush. Once dinner was complete, the two sat there talking about how they could both use a nap, but instead, she challenged him to a few games of Words with Friends on their phones.
Don’t tell yourself otherwise, Tyson was all about trying to play dirty sounding words. She surprised him with a few right back. They played puzzle games together. For being apart, he was amazed that she was making everything they were planning on doing in-person together, still happen. The smile never left his face that afternoon.
Suddenly, his phone buzzed with another note from “Santa”, via her.
Grab your laptop, it’s time to go fast with ZOOM! Check your email for a link.
He squinted at her through the video chat, wondering how she sent a text while she was clearly just playing games on her phone and chatting with him. He never saw her do anything that looked like she was texting him.  But there it was, an email from “Santa” with a Zoom link. Joining the meeting, he found not only was she there, but Kacey, his mom, and the Grandparents Jost. There was nothing but smiles amongst all the Josts, and his mom thanking her for setting this up.  Tyson was still amazed by what all she had done to make the day happen.  Everyone chatted for quite a while, until Tyson said he needed to get going. Everyone sent their wishes for a good holiday season and new year.
It was now she that was confused, because Tyson never said anything about other plans. She originally had planned on one more movie and eating leftovers, but apparently that was off the table. He promised he’d text her soon though.
Tyson hurried around his apartment, through the kitchen, and out the door.
About an hour later her phone buzzed, with a message. Santa says open your front door.
She smirked, texting back Tyson, what are you up to?
Just open your door.
As soon as she opened the door, she found herself pelted with a snowball. This caught her off-guard, especially as there was no snow, and it was nearly 50 degrees outside. Childlike laughter was coming from the curly-haired man in a Santa hat in front of her, smile bright and wide.
“What are you doing here, and… where’d you get the snowball?”
“I couldn’t wait, I’m sorry. You know I’m bad at this.  But… I wanted to give you your gift.”
“We’re supposed to be quarantining, goof.” “We’re getting tested every day and we’re all vaccinated. I couldn’t help it, I needed to see you.” She smiled and sighed. “Get your ass in here, Jost.” There were still wet bits of snow” on her shirt, and she questioned again, “No really, where did the snowball come from? You know that’s how you get on Santa’s naughty light, right?”
Tyson laughed again, explaining he scraped a bunch of frost out of his freezer to make the snowball as he came inside her home and plopped down on the overstuffed chair. She rolled her eyes.
“I still can’t believe you did that. Anyway, did you want to watch another movie? Eat some leftovers? My plans for the night just got changed, mister.”
Tyson was rubbing the shiny paper of the package that was hiding in his hoodie pocket. “I was hoping we could exchange gifts first?” He had a hopeful smile.
“I was thinking first… you should come with me to the kitchen,” she smiled and grabbed his hand, pulling him up off the chair. “I need some help with something.”
As the two walked, she stopped in the doorway. Tyson had no idea what was going on, until she pointed upward at the door frame, where a sprig of mistletoe hung. “You have no idea how much I hoped you’d come over so I could use this.”
He simply smiled, let go of her hand and cupped her cheeks as he leaned in and kissed her softly. She might have deepened the kiss more to let her holiday spirit be known.  After a few breathless moments, the two separated, with dazed smiles on their faces. It was at that point that he pulled the tiny box from his burgundy hoodie pocket. Her eyes got wide, and she told him to wait there for a moment, disappearing into a different room, and coming back with a thin, flat package for Tyson. She insisted he open his gift first.
Tyson could see the shiny paper, and how nice it was wrapped. He even took the bow off, and stuck it on her head while she waited impatiently as he took the paper off.  Inside the package he found a new set of ukulele strings.
“Ever since that first time you played for me, no offense, I cringed at the condition of your uke strings. Time to upgrade!”
He smiled at her, and then questioned immediately, “hey, you went over what we set as a budget. That’s not fair. But thank you, I’ll put them on when I get home! Here,” he said as he handed over the tiny box into her hands, “your turn.”
“Store wrapped it for you, didn’t they…” she chirped, laughing as Tyson blushed and looked down.
“Shut up and open your present.”
Under the paper was a small velvet box. She looked at it, then looked at Tyson with concern.
“Well open it!”
Her eyes went back to the box, fingering the edge as she opened it. Inside was a dainty silver chain, including a charm with her initials and favorite gemstone. She looked back at him again in disbelief.
“Tyson, I… you shouldn’t have. And you definitely went over the budget, what the hell?”
“But do you like it?”
She looked down, trying to keep a tear from falling down her cheek, and then back up. “It’s beautiful, but you still shouldn’t have.”
Tyson took the box from her hands and offered to put the necklace on her. She ran to the hallway to admire it in the mirror against her skin.
“I love it, Tyson. But… how did you know that this was my favorite gem?”
“Santa has helpers. Helpers named Nate.”
She laughed, internally thinking she needed to thank Nate the next time she saw him. Still fingering the chain and charm, she felt Tyson wrap his arms around her from behind, pulling her close. He kissed the top of her head as they smiled at each other in the mirror.
“It looks good on you. I’m glad you love it. I…” Tyson’s voice trailed off. He inhaled quickly, and closed his eyes for a moment, opening them again to look her in the eyes in the mirror. “I love you.”
Whatever tears she was hiding from the beautiful gift burst through, as she turned around to face Tyson. He looked down at her, with a hopeful lopsided smile.
“I love you too, Tyson. Merry Christmas.”
A wave of relief washed over him as he pulled her in tight. “Merry Christmas, babe.” The two held that position for quite a while, until of course Tyson said something else. “Now what’s this I hear about leftovers? I’m starving!”
She rolled her eyes, and slapped chest playfully. Back to the kitchen they headed, but not without another stop under the mistletoe… those leftovers could wait a few more minutes.

Should I call him? No! What if it wasn't meant for me? Idiot, there was no one else in the café of course it was meant for you! What if it's a prank? It's probably the number to a McDonald’s or something. And if it's not..? What if he never comes into the café again?
You woke up in a freezing cold room with an acquainted boy named "Ten Lee" on your mind, contemplatively staring into his napkin before finally deciding to text him.
You typed the 11 digits into your phone.
Ok... now what do I say?
Hi Ten, this is Y/N from Décalcomanie.
Hi Ten, this is Y|
|
Why do I even care about this so much? It's just a text and for all I know this kid could be some kind of siren-vampire trying to seduce me with song lyrics at nighttime.. is that even possible?
Hi Mr. Lee this is Y/N from Décalcomanie.
Why so formal? Oh God I sent it..
It’s done.
You grabbed a towel and prepared a quick shower before continuing the rest of the morning. Intruding thoughts about Mr. Lee fill your mind under the water.. like.. why does he only visit the café at night? Your prior superstitious suspicions about him being a vampire fall back in mind.
At least if I get to be a vampire I can live this timeline as a doctor and make my mom happy, then be a dancer for eternity.
As much as you did not know about Ten, you still knew quite a bit about him. His favorite combination at the café is an iced Americano with pandan cake, his favorite color is black— you assume since it's the only color his outfits consist of, and he has a younger sister, which you found out after hearing him say 妹妹 over the phone one night.
The loud text notification sounds throughout the bathroom and you nearly slip trying to quickly finish your shower to check the new message.
Mom (Work)
My daughter! Your grandmother is sick, I am going to Incheon to bring her medicine and groceries so I need you to open the café today. I should be back to take over at 2 o’clock. Be careful on your own!
Unwrapping your body of your towel to dress into a nice outfit, you sighed knowing your Saturday would be another day spent on your sore feet. The café opens at 11 AM so you would only be working an extra few hours, but you hoped your mom would let you take a slice of delicacy home for the filial overtime.
“Aya!”
Another loud notification tone beamed from your phone, forcing your name brooch to prick at your fingertip. The screen luminated with an unknown number.
Contact Not Found
hihi Y/N! no need to be so formal with me! I'm only from ‘96 :)
Contact ‘TEN’ Added
TEN
are you free today? I was wondering if you wanted to get coffee and ice cream, if you're not sick of the smell yet ;p
You frowned remembering the plans your mother made for your day.
Y/N
I'm so sorry Ten my mom wants me to work opening for the café today :(
Figuring that was your ending, you packed a bag full of necessities for the day and walked to Décalcomanie.
TEN
why don't I come over there? the café serves bingsoo this time of year right? it’s barely the afternoon, not many people will be dining. we could still hang out if you’re down?
Butterflies soared in your stomach just like they do every night at 11:59 PM.
Y/N
Yeah that sounds perfect :)
TEN
okk see you soon!
Eek!
It felt so weird to think of seeing him in the daytime, especially after just mentally accusing him of being a bloodsucker.
Upon your entrance, the café was soon bright with morning light and you patiently awaited Ten’s arrival. Nearly an hour had gone by and there was no sign of him. You didn't think he would flake out, but you barely know each other so why wouldn't he?
Ten was right; it was pretty empty here this morning. You bent forward to hand one of the regular old women her tea in the Décalcomanie’s prettiest teacup upon your mother’s request of the best service for all of her regular customers.
The bell chimed with an open door. Your eyes blinked to the woman's upturned phone by her saucer.
𝟏𝟏:𝟓𝟗 𝐀𝐌
Could it be? You laughed at the irony in the thought, but when you looked up from the woman’s table, a rice cake cheeked boy stood across from you.
"I'm here!" He announced to the entire floor.
You bowed a greeting like you do for every customer and ushered him to the bar, "Sit down over here." where he sat in front of your standing form. "What type of bingsoo have you come in for, sir?" You teased.
"Coconut with vanilla ice cream! And.. two spoons?"
You blushed at the thought of sharing subtle intimacy with the fine young man before your eyes. You had only just met him, but you saw no harm in sharing a dessert with him as you would do with friends.. if you had them.
Nodding and running off to make the icy dessert, you heard the ripple of a writing pen. From the corner of your eye, peeked Ten orchestrating an English poem onto a stray napkin, his brown bangs falling on the bridge of his nose. These little actions made your heart jump; his passion for various styles of music felt so endearing to you.
You paid for the grandiose bowl of sugar and presented it to Ten. His phone lit up with a notification and you took notice of his wallpaper: Him with a disgusted looking boy that he was French kissing on the cheek. I'm not judging but.. whomst?
"Who's that?" You asked, handing him a spoon, taking another for yourself.
He glanced at his phone and blushed, breaking out in quiet giggles.
"That's my friend, Yangyang. We really enjoy our time together."
You hummed and smiled. They seem to have a good friendship, but you were still curious to know more about this Yangyang guy.
"So you attend university?" Ten asked before shoveling a high spoon of ice flakes into his mouth.
"I'm a sophomore at SNU." You replied, mirroring his bold eating style.
Ten spoke with surprised eyes, "Really!? That's a fancy school. Wow~ you must be really smart."
"Not really.. I'm studying dance. All I do is move my feet."
"I'm a dancer, too! It's a really hard and beautiful art, you shouldn't sell yourself short for being a part of it." He genuinely advised.
You looked down after thanking him for his kind words, suddenly feeling very bashful. "How old are you, by the way? You calling me Mr. Lee this morning is all I've been thinking about." You both laughed.
"I'm 20, turning 21 this year.” He nodded. "You're from ‘00? Yangyang is the same age as you!"  He exclaims.
"I’ve never met someone my age! How many friends do you have?"
"I have a few, but I’m closest to a specific six and we all live together."
"It must be nice to have so many friends. It’s been a little difficult for me to make friends this semester.." You stirred some melted ice cream around your side of the bowl, suddenly feeling very lonely in Ten’s personal presence.
"You should come over sometime! We love new friends!" He was pleading with his eyes for you to agree.
"Oh.. I don't want to intrude-" "No really! We would love to have your company. Here..." He flipped over the napkin he was previously writing on and scribbled a short address on it, sliding it over to you.
"You should come by tomorrow evening. 5 o'clock if it works for you." Ten says before finishing off the last bit of flavored dairy in the bowl.
You scanned over the inked napkin in your hand.
97 Saemunanro, Sinmunno 1 il-ga, Jongnogu, Seoul
"It's apartment number 117. Just call me when you get there because we may not be able to hear your knocks over the screaming." You looked at him in slight concern, but he only smiled in return.
Ten took out his card to pay for the bingsoo, but you stopped him. "Oh I already paid for the both of us!"
"Aww you didn't have to," Ten frowned, but handed me $20 anyways, "Here take this at least. A tip for my favorite barista." He winked and ran out of the café before you could protest.
"REMEMBER 5 O'CLOCK!"
Ten shouted, bumping into a man, who cursed at him, profusely bowing on the way out. You shook your head at his silliness and flipped the napkin over to a pretty poem.
She is like a cat in the dark and then
she is the darkness
She rules her life like a fine skylark
and when the sky is starless
To Be Continued…

any moment, any time (a.h.)
summary: being in love is hard, in your line of work. you only hope that you can tell him all of your feelings before it’s too late. unrelated, his brother is your best friend.
warnings: this one is... just, filled with angst, my loves. i’m so sorry. there’s also a lot of fluff, to make up for it, though. angst with a happy ending (you hope)
pairing: aaron hotchner x reader (gender neutral, but if i made a mistake let me know!)
words: 4801
part: 1/2 (part two sometime in the next few days, just because this one turned out pretty long)  part two
note: originally titled ‘best friend’s brother’ after the song from victorious (yes), this started as a 3k domestic fluff piece with a high school trope and turned into the disaster that it is. if you can name all the songs i quote throughout this i’ll give you bonus points. i regret everything.
Tumblr media
To say that you were exhausted would be a bit of an understatement—but that’s what four and a half hours worth of paperwork did to a person. You loved your job, and you loved the BAU, they were your family, but there was truly nothing better than falling into bed at the end of the day.
When you got home, however, there was a human lying on your bed, hands behind his head, legs crossed, eyes watching you.
Sean Hotchner, in all his glory.
“Damnit,” you laugh. “What the hell are you doing here?” You crossed the room as he moved over. You sat beside him and he threw an arm over your shoulder.
“What, I can’t drop in to say hello to my best friend randomly?” he asked.
You shrugged. “No, you can, but you can’t break into my apartment randomly.” He practically leaped off the bed, turning to sit at your desk, across the room from the bed.
“Well, I’m here now, so you have to put up with me.”
You kicked off your shoes, throwing your blazer on the floor and beginning to change into the first pair of pajamas you could find. You and Sean had been best friends for so long that changing in front of the other was normal, and you trusted him. Besides, you were too tired to care.
“Well, I’ve had a very long day in the office, so you’ll have to talk to me in the morning.”
Sean laughed, quietly, hesitantly, and said, “My brother treating you guys good?”
You lay down, pulling the covers over yourself and staring at the ceiling. Oh, so many ways you could have answered that question. So many things that you didn’t want to think about. So many things that it wasn’t okay to think about your best friend’s brother. But that was a conversation for another day. You didn’t want to explain your feelings for your best friend’s brother to your best friend, not yet. And yes, you felt so guilty for it, especially with the workplace flirting between you and Aaron, and the not-so-appropriate glances and yes, even the standing too close to each other made you feel guilty. But you couldn’t tell Sean. You weren’t ready. “Yes,” you said plainly. “He’s good at what he does.”
Sean scoffed, nodding. “Yes, he is.” He got up, then moved to lay beside you. “I’m here till Saturday, can I crash here?”
You turned to face him, where he was staring at the ceiling, much like you were. “Of course.”
“You’re the best,” he said, and you laughed.
“Don’t you forget that.” You let out a sigh, then said, “How’ve you been?”
He opened his mouth, then closed it, and turned to face you. “Okay, I guess.”
“You guess?”
“Just been a tough couple of months,” he said, and before you could respond, he said, “Go to sleep. You’re exhausted. We’ll talk tomorrow.”
You wanted to argue, but then you nodded. You were tired. “Okay,” you whispered. “It’s good to see you.”
“Yeah,” he said. “Missed you. Now go to sleep.” He turned over and slipped under your arm, letting you push your fingers through his hair. It had been a year-and-a-half since you and Sean had been able to see each other last, and it had been a year since you had come to terms with your feelings for your boss. You wanted to tell Sean (he was always telling you that you spend too much time hunting serial killers and not enough time meeting people), but there was no way he would want you seeing his brother.
Another day, you thought. Another day.
~~~oOo~~~
“Sir,” you said, knocking on Hotch’s door. You tried to ignore the butterflies in your stomach, but when you no longer could, you blamed them on the fact that you were about to get personal with your boss, and say something that you probably shouldn’t.
“Come in,” you heard, so you did. He was sitting at his desk, doing paperwork. He didn’t look up as you walked in, so you stood awkwardly for a moment. He finished writing the sentence, then looked up at you. “Are you alright, Y/n?”
You nodded quickly, swallowing. “Look, it’s none of my business,” you started, and the look on his face made you rush out, “and it’s nothing bad. But he’s my best friend, and I’d like to say that I’d consider you a friend,” (just friends), “so for the sake of both of you, I’m going to tell you. Sean’s in town—” he opened his mouth to say something, but you kept talking— “and I think it would do you both good if you would give him a call.”
He froze, not exactly sure what to say to you. He ended up just shaking his head. “I appreciate your concern, but,” he stopped, then looked up at you. “Since when are you friends with Sean?”
The question catches you off guard, and you step back. “Since… I don’t know. A few years, I think? You know this. He was visiting you here, started talking to me in the bullpen, we exchanged numbers, started talking.” You breathed out, then said, “I hardly see how that’s relevant.”
He shook his head. “You’re right, it isn’t.” He sighed, and crossed his arms. “Is that all?”
No, dumbass, I’m in love with you, a voice in your head said.
“Yes, it is,” your actual voice said. You turned on your heel and walked out of the room, closing the door as gently as possible behind you. JJ looked up at you, tilting her head. When you sat at your desk, she and Emily exchanged looks.
“What was that about?” JJ asked. Emily nodded behind her, looking you up and down.
“Nothing important,” you said.
“Did you tell him that you love him?” Emily said, and you immediately glanced around the room to see if anyone heard, but no one was in close proximity, save for Spencer, listening to a tape with his headphones.
“Emily,” you hissed. “No, no I did not, and no, I am not.”
JJ groaned. “Oh, come on! You know it’s true.”
You leaned back in your seat, covering your eyes with your hands. “He’s my boss.”
“Yeah, but technically, you report to Rossi, so you wouldn’t be breaking any rules,” Emily said.
“He’s just as head over heels for you as you are for him,” JJ added.
You sighed. You were about to retort it, when Garcia walked in. “New cases, ladies! And Spencer.”
“Oh, shit,” you muttered, remembering that Sean was probably raiding your kitchen at that exact moment. You stood and pulled out your phone as Emily and JJ started heading to the conference room.
“I’ll be up in a moment,” you said to them. As soon as they left, you called Sean. It went to voicemail, which could not be a good sign. You started speaking as you walked up to the conference room.“Hi, Sean, it’s me, call me when you get this, but I’m at work, we just got a case, not sure how long it will take, but you know where my spare key is.” You stopped a few feet from the door, making sure your team couldn’t hear you. “Don’t set my apartment on fire. Love you, bye.”
The conference room was dead silent when you walked into the room.
“Love you, bye,” Morgan said. Your jaw dropped, and you immediately turned to Hotch, who was looking through the case file, jaw clenched.
JJ and Emily and Garcia had equally horrified expressions on their face (they all knew you loved Hotch. And also you were supposed to tell them everything). You shook your head at them.
Rossi was quietly trying to explain what had happened to Reid. “Did you all eavesdrop on my private conversation?” The girls and Morgan nodded, Rossi sighed, and Hotch didn’t move. “How much of that did you hear?”
“Don’t set my apartment on fire,” Morgan said. “So, who’s the guy?”
You shook your head and sat down. “A close friend is staying at my place.” Hotch looked up at you then, and tilted his head. You could watch it click in his head, as he realized his brother was staying at your place. ‘I’m sorry,’ you mouthed at him, but he just shook his head and tried to soften his face as much as possible, to show he wasn’t upset. You could see right past it.
“We have four fires in Wyoming,” Garcia said, clicking through the pictures of the buildings. “And 13 people dead. After further examination, the coroner determined that all of the victims were dead before the fire started.”
“Wait,” Morgan said, “so this guy is killing people, and then lighting the buildings up to cover his tracks?”
“Is it the kill or the fire that gets him off?” Rossi added.
“That’s what we have to find out. Wheels up in 30,” Hotch said, and the team dispersed. You longed to go after Hotch, to maybe explain, to say something, anything, but you didn’t. You walked with Spencer to get your go bags.
“So, I may have overheard you and JJ and Emily talking a little bit,” he said. You looked up at him and he shrugged. “I think you and Hotch would make a good couple. You balance each other out, and you’re always bouncing ideas off of each other.” Reid paused, then shook his head.
“What is it?” you asked, stopping him before you reached your desks.
He laughed, “It’s just that you and Hotch have mom and dad vibes.”
“We… we do?” You sort of laughed at the thought. You ruffled Spencer’s hair and then shook your head, grabbing your things.
“Besides, you guys would make a pretty couple.” Your head snapped up to look at him, but he was distracted, gathering his own things.
“Spencer!” you laughed, and he just shrugged.
“I’m not wrong.”
“No, you’re never wrong, pretty boy,” you said. And then you and him walked to the plane, and he recounted the latest strange and obscure fact he heard.
“You know, I think I actually read about that,” you said.
“Really?” he asked, sitting by the window.
“No.” You sat across from him as Hotch walked in the room. He sat beside you, and you had to pretend it didn’t affect you.
“Hey, look,” you whispered to him. He turned to you, and you sighed. “Yes, Sean is staying at my place, but I just want you to know that—”
“No, it’s okay. What you said earlier, you were just looking out for your boyfriend, who happens to be my brother, it’s okay.”
Your jaw dropped as he turned away. “Boyfriend?” you hissed, as low as you could so the team wouldn't hear as they boarded. “Sean is not my boyfriend, Hotchner.” But I wish you were.
“I’m sorry, I just assumed,” he said quietly, his eyes boring into your soul.
You crossed your arms. “God, you call yourself such a great profiler, but you really can’t profile your friends,” you whispered, so quietly that even he couldn’t hear you.
You were quiet for the rest of the plane ride, and by the time you got to Wyoming, it was already late. You went straight to the hotel, where you split off into pairs. Of course, the team sensed the tension between you and Hotch, and being the troublemakers that they were, decided to put you and him together.
“It’s best for the team that you work out your issues,” JJ said.
“It’s in our best interest,” Emily said.
“We need you at your best,” Rossi said.
And then, Spencer, with: “Contrary to popular belief, forced proximity actually does little to grow bonds between—”
And then a unanimous: “Shut up!”
And then, there’s a, “Fuck,” as you entered the room.
You felt a little bit like you were living in a bad romance novel as you saw it: the room had one bed.
It was fine. Adults can share beds. It’s only mature. You shared a bed with the other Hotchner brother just last night. This would be a breeze.
It was not a breeze when you almost forgot he was there and started to strip in the middle of the room, only to shriek and run to the bathroom.
It was also not a breeze when he walked out of the bathroom wearing a soft t-shirt and pajama pants that made your heart skip (several) beats.
It was also not a breeze when he tried to take the floor and you said that it was only reasonable that you share because the team wanted us to bond and we aren’t going to do that on separate levels.
“And also if you're on the floor and a serial killer walks in, you’re the first target,” you said.
He furrowed his brow, confused, and titled his head. He didn’t exactly know what to say, so he just said, “Okay. But I’m sleeping on the side closest to the door, so I’m still the first target,” he said, and you almost laughed, because it was almost funny.
“I’m sorry about the comment I made on the plane,” he said. “I… I was jealous, and I let my emotions get the better of me.”
“Jealous?” you said (you couldn’t help yourself). You were lying on your back, staring at the ceiling, and he was on his side, facing away from you.
“Maybe that wasn’t the right word.”
“Then what word would you have used?”
“I’m not sure. Reid would probably have the exact word for this feeling.”
You stifled a laugh and shrugged, turning just your head to look at him. “Well, whatever it was, rest assured, Sean and I aren’t together like that. We’re just friends.”
He made a noise just to assure you that he heard in, and then he went silent. “Goodnight, Y/n,” he said.
“Goodnight, Aaron.”
And that’s how, at three am, you sent a text to Sean of sleeping Aaron Hotchner, facing away from you, saying, ‘God is testing me.’ Of course, that was meant to go to JJ.
“Shit,” you muttered, trying to delete the text (and almost not succeeding, but that god for Garcia’s technology hacks) and sending it to its intended recipient. You didn’t exactly want to send pictures of your best friend’s brother to your best friend in the middle of the night.
Hotch stirred, beside you. You were sitting up, leaning against the headboard, and he was still on his side, facing the door. “Ev’ry think okay?” he muttered, and you patted his shoulder.
“Yes, love, go to sleep,” you said, running a finger down his arm (in a completely platonic attempt to get your friend back to sleep). He flipped over to face you, then, eyes wide open. You silently cursed yourself. “I just called you love.”
“Yes, you did, love,” he said, and you sighed.
“It’s too early to be made fun of.”
His eyes darkened and he shook his head. “Except for I’m dead serious,” he said. You looked at him, and he sat up too, moving closer to you. “It’s not fair,” he said, “it’s not fair how much I love you.”
You shook your head, then leaned over and kissed his forehead. “It’s late and you’re half asleep,” you whispered. “Tell me in the morning if you mean it.”
He was too tired to argue, so he huffed an, “A’ight,” and lay his head in your lap. You ran your fingers through his hair and his breathing deepened, falling to sleep right away. He looked so innocent while he slept, as if the horrors of his day simply weren’t there. As if he wasn’t haunted day and night by things most people only experience in horror films. As if he hadn’t lived through more than his fair share of trauma.
He was just… peaceful.
~~~oOo~~~
You woke up slowly, Hotch held in your arms. You were surprised at how cuddly he was, only because of his hard exterior, but you were pleasantly surprised. He absolutely deserved to be taken care of. He stirred, blinking rapidly for a second and lifting himself slightly off of you, taking in his surroundings.
“Hi,” he murmured, laying his head against your chest and slipping his arms around your waist.
“Hello,” you said back. “We should get ready.”
“We have time,” he said, pulling you closer.
You pushed your hand through his hair. “Whatever you say, sir.”
~~~oOo~~~
“You’re here early,” Morgan said as he walked into the room. “That can’t be good. You and the bossman fight?”
You sighed, resisting the urge to say, ‘I wish,’ and instead saying, “I neither confirm nor deny that.” After a few minutes, you had untangled yourself from Hotch and gotten ready for the day, 3 am conversations and 6 am cuddles forgotten.
Spencer walked in a few minutes after Morgan, talking animatedly to JJ, explaining one of the many books on fire he read during the night. You shared a glance with JJ, who excused herself and immediately walked to you.
“Y/n,” she whispered, and you shook your head. “There was one bed!” she said, too loudly.
“Wait, you and Hotch slept in the same bed?” Morgan said, and you groaned.
“Yes! There was one bed, and we were both too tired to fight it, and we’re both mature adults, and it’s not like I haven’t shared a bed with a Hotchner before—” which is not what you meant to say, especially not as Hotch walked into the room. His eyes widened (for a brief moment) and he sat down, choosing to ignore the comment.
“Let’s get to work.”
~~~oOo~~~
It was supposed to be easy. You had an address, and you were half an hour out. But Hotch and Emily and Reid had been interviewing a witness, and they were ten minutes out.
In twenty minutes, Emily had been shot (thank god for bullet proof vests, but she’d have a nasty scar), Hotch was taken hostage, and Spencer was, luckily, unharmed.
“Oh, my god,” Rossi said, as you, Morgan, and JJ approached Emily and Reid, who were standing by their car.
“Where’s Hotch?” you asked, and Emily shook her head.
“There’s four of them,” Emily said.
“We got the profile wrong?”
“No,” Spencer said, moving his hands with his words, “it’s his family, they’re protecting him.”
“Wait, so Hotch is still in there?” you said, looking towards the window.
Rossi, who had taken a phone call as you discussed it, said, “SWAT and backup is on their way.”
You glanced around and noticed that police were blocking off the scene, and JJ was talking to the press. Your head was spinning.
“Fuck,” you muttered, running a hand through your hair.
“What’s the plan?” Morgan asked, and Rossi gave him an uneasy look. Hotch was always the one who came up with plans in situations like these. Damn. Rossi made the plan, and started talking to the team and a group of officers.
“We surround the house. I want everyone looking for viewpoints inside. Make sure my agent is okay—” the thought made you shiver “—and we trust him if he’s talking.”
The group nodded, and someone asked, “If we get a shot, do we take it?”
Rossi shook his head. “No; they have weapons and will hurt my agent if one of their own is attacked. We want this to go down as peacefully as possible.”
You bit your lip as Morgan handed you a vest. Your eyes didn’t leave the house.
“I have a bad feeling about this,” you told him.
“It’s gonna be okay. Hotch is strong, he’s probably talking them down as we speak.” You nodded, huffing out a sigh. Morgan sighed. “He’s going to live, and you and him are going to talk about your feelings, and you’re going to be the happiest couple in the BAU,” he said.
You gave him a half smile. “Thank you.”
He pat your shoulder, tilting his head toward the group. “No problem. Now let’s go save your man.”
~~~oOo~~~
The ambulance ride was your least favorite part. They wouldn’t let you ride with Hotch (something about claustrophobia and how they needed more EMTs and you would just take up space). So instead you were sitting in an ambulance, Reid on one side of you and Emily on the other, Morgan getting his arm stitched up across from you. Rossi was driving JJ to the hospital, saying that they would meet you there.
Your only thought the entire time was that Hotch was in that ambulance by himself with a goddamn gunshot wound.
“What’s the statistical likelihood that Hotch dies?” you said, looking to Reid, who shook his head.
“I don’t think you want to know, honestly.”
Emily put her arm around your shoulders. “It’s gonna be okay, I swear.”
You weren’t regretting not telling him that you love him. You weren’t regretting not kissing him or taking him to see the sunset or learning about the stars with him or showing him all of the wonderful things life offers. You weren’t regretting not doing that, no. You were regretting that you wouldn’t be able to do that. You weren’t regretting what you didn’t do, no, because the past is the past and you can’t change what you didn’t have the courage to do. You were regretting what you wouldn’t be able to do, things that hadn’t had the chance to be. The dreams you hadn’t yet had that were crushed before they even surfaced.
You were crying before you even reached the hospital. Reid was rubbing your arms and Emily had you in her arms, and Morgan was on the phone with Rossi. You cried all the way into the building and all the way up the stairs and all the way into the waiting room. You cried until you couldn’t cry anymore and JJ handed you a bottle of water.
“Drink up, Y/n,” she said gently, “Aaron would want you to.”
You nodded, feeling a little numb. You weren’t sure how long you were going to be sitting their in anguish, waiting for a doctor to come in the room. Maybe it would be a nurse. Either way, they would have a look on their face, a mix of being tired from having been through such a long surgery and the pain of having it be for nothing. The pain of having to walk out here and tell a group of strangers that their loved one died, and that they tried to stop it, they did, but they couldn’t.
It ate away at your thoughts, your stomach doing flips and your head spinning. You felt lighter, all of a sudden. Like you could take a step and float away, even though you were sitting down. And then the room got really loud. But not the voices, it was a ringing in your ear, a sound the color silver, and then it was a sharp pain in your skull.
“Y/n! Y/n, can you hear me?” you heard a soft, female voice say, but you couldn’t exactly place it.
“Get help,” a deeper voice said, and then you recognized that as Morgan, and you shook your head, drinking some of the water JJ gave you and closing your eyes.
“I’m just dehydrated, and the fluorescent lights aren’t helping,” you said. Then you remembered, “I have to call Sean.” You stood up and walked out of the room as quickly as possible, walking right out the sliding door and into the cool night air.
The phone rang twice before he picked up. “Hello?”
“Hey, Sean,” you said, voice breaking.
“Are you okay? What happened?”
You looked down at your shoes (they were dirty from running after serial killers and kicking down doors and running into houses where the love of your life has just been shot). “It’s… it’s Aaron,” you said.
A pause. “What about Aaron?”
“He was… he was shot.”
Silence. A silence that lasted so long that you could almost feel reality bending around you.
“He was shot?” Sean’s voice was eerily calm. Until it wasn’t. “Is he alive? Oh, my god, Y/n, is he alive?”
Stray tears slipped down your face. “He’s in surgery right now. I… he didn’t look good when I saw him.”
When you saw him… it brings up a whole new wave of emotions.
There were gunshots fired. You were behind the house, in case anyone ran. By the time you got back around, one guy was dead, two were in handcuffs, and one was shot. You didn’t see Aaron, and Rossi and Morgan were busy, and Reid was talking to an officer, and JJ was talking to the press, and Emily was yelling for a medic.
A medic.
Your feet were moving before you could even think it, and you were in the house in an instant. Aaron was lying on the floor, a growing spot of red on his white shirt. You could hear Emily tell you to stay with him while she got someone’s attention.
“No,” you muttered, kneeling beside his barely-conscious body. Distantly, you heard a train. “No, Aaron, can you hear me?”
“I… I can hear you,” he said, and you cupped his cheek with one hand while you tried to stop the bleeding with the other, to no avail. You didn’t want to hurt him more; you didn’t press that hard, but you also didn’t want him to die in your arms.
“Where’s the goddamn medic?” you cried, and you felt Aaron grasp at you, trying to grab your hand. “Hey, I’m here, stay with me, you’re going to be okay.” He was slipping away, his eyes fluttering closed. “No, no, look at me,” you said.
“I’m here,” he whispered, his voice scratchy.
“Count to ten,” you said, pushing hair from his face, encouraging him to keep his eyes trained on you.
“One,” he said, tightening and then loosening his grip on your arm. You saw the paramedics out of the corner of your eye, and you silently prayed to whoever was listening. “Two.”
“Good, Aaron, good, the paramedics are here, you’re gonna be okay,” you said as Emily stepped towards you, grabbing your arm and pulling you away from him.
When the ambulance started, they wouldn’t let you go with him. They needed all the space they could get, which made your heart stop.  As soon as he was out of your sight, you turned to Emily and sobbed in her arms. She held you tight, understanding.
“Y/n?” Sean said. You blinked.
“Will you tell Jessica? And tell her not to tell Jack yet?”
You heard Sean sigh through the phone. “Yeah, I can do that. Let me know what happens.”
“I’m sorry,” you said.
“I’m sorry, too,” he said. “Love you, Y/n.”
“Love you too, Sean. Stay safe. Call you soon. Bye.”
Hanging up the phone, you let out a sigh. You spent a minute catching your breath. You wanted to be strong. You wanted to be so strong, and take this like a champ, and somehow know that everything was going to be okay because it had too, but it was so hard. It was so hard.
But you found yourself back in the waiting room as the sun began to rise, slowly, and birds began chirping. It was a wonder that they could go on, and be so lovely, while you were in so much pain. The birds had not a care in the world. You longed to be a bird. The thought of your friend dying not a worry. The thought of your friend dying, alone, in a hospital room with strangers desperately trying to save him… not a worry. Oh, to be a bird.
Garcia was in the room, as she had flown in as soon as possible. She hugged you tightly as soon as she saw you.
“How are you holding up, dearest?” she asked you, to which you just shrugged. You and her sat beside each other, and you noticed her red-rimmed eyes.
“Are you okay?”
She nodded. “I’m just worried about Hotch, is all.”
A doctor walked into the room. “Are you all here for Aaron Hotchner?”
Simultaneously, you all stood. “Yes,” JJ said.
The doctor gave a once over to the group, then said to JJ, “He’s alive,” (cue you nearly falling until Morgan grabbed your elbow) “but he’s asleep right now. We aren’t exactly sure when he’ll wake up, but it’ll probably be a few days.”
The tension in the group immediately lightened, and you were the first one to say, “Can we see him?”
“Yes,” she said. “Just don’t crowd the room.”
The Tomato Thief
Enjoy this little something I wrote based on a prompt here on Tumblr. Feedback is always appreciated.
The first time Ian noticed his tomatoes half-gone, half-squashed from the small vegetable patch he had started working on when he and Mickey moved into the apartment complex, he chose to ignore it. Pretending as if the loss of his small, barely ripe cherry tomatoes was insignificant, he mentioned no word of it to anyone, making a conscious decision to simply start the planting process once again. So, in the past month, Ian, choosing not to get frustrated, but rather improve his skills, was trailing along the edge of a nervous breakdown, trying to get his little patch of land replenished. When he realized that the second time doing something he initially started as a hobby would be much more difficult than the first, he feared that what he intended to be relaxing would turn into aggravating. If it wasn't for the security business, he probably would've had a meltdown, very much hurt by the fact his poor tomatoes were gone, but somehow, he managed to power through it, luck being somewhat on his side, making the tomato-growing process faster than before. It was a long excruciating process, living with the secret that all of his previous hard work was now replaced by even harder work and determination, but the sight of his vegetable patch replenishing itself as if it were never ruined, along with the Westside growing even fonder to both him and Mickey, almost starting to feel like home, made it all sort-of worth it for Ian. His husband was happy, his home was beautiful, his business was expanding, and his tomatoes were finally turning a deeper shade of red, after being torn out the first time while they were mostly green. Ian was truly very much happy.
Until he woke up one Saturday morning, excited to start his weekend off by gardening, his way to relax from the crammed-up week he and Mickey had, both enjoying the little separate bubbles they created, together yet apart, Mickey with the pool he grew to love, and Ian with his veggies, working away in the Sun -- and found every single one of his tomatoes gone, neatly picked from their stems, as if done by a professional.
First, Ian had paled, his complexion turning impossibly whiter in the bask of the afternoon glow. Then, his left eye began twitching. Anger bubbled inside of his chest, and he finally understood his husband's urges to break chairs and signs, and throw tantrums -- Ian felt like murdering somebody. Wrapping his hands so tight around the neck of the person who took his tomatoes which weren't even ripe for taking yet, and squeezing until he saw the life leave their eyes. Scaring himself at the thought, he took a deep breath and then held it for a long period of time -- a questionable, dangerous, life-threatening period of time. He was sure that his neck and cheeks were even redder than his poor tomatoes were when he had last seen them. Exhaling quickly, he balled his hands into fists and made his way quickly to the vegetable patch to examine it better.
Crouching down, as if he were in a detective movie, he observed the soil, in case the culprit left footprints or accidentally dropped a valuable item Ian could use to identify them with. When he saw nothing helpful, but rather just his regular garden -- sans the lost reds -- he rolled over all of his options in his head.
It could've been an animal the last time -- a squirrel or a bird, considering how a lot of the tomatoes were simply just squashed -- but now, the precision the tomatoes were picked with... there was no other possibility. It was one of the other tenants, somebody who deliberately wanted to either get revenge on Ian or simply to eat the vegetables Ian had worked so hard on for himself and his husband. It was ironic how he saw red.
Breathing deeply, composing himself more with each inhale and exhale -- a technique he had been forced to learn in court-mandated therapy -- the ginger made his way from the garden to the manager's office, strides quick. Melanie, the on-sight manager, was in the room, along with her poodle when Ian knocked on the door.
"Hi." She chirped in greeting. "How may I help you?"
Ian forced a smile. "I was wondering if you perhaps had cameras in the garden area? I think someone stole something I left there, by accident." He lied, not wanting the woman to think of him as even a bigger fag for caring about dumbass vegetable-fruits. Much to his dismay, she shook her head apologetically.
"Sorry, no. Was it valuable?"
Yes, Ian thought sadly. "Nah. Probably just misplaced it. Thank you anyway."
She smiled again, "You're welcome. Say hi to your husband for me."
"I will." He waved goodbye and exited the office, closing the door behind him.
No cameras, no clues. He had no fucking idea how he could possibly catch the asshole who had the nerves to fuck with him. Suddenly, he understood what he needed to do.
Mickey was lounging by the pool, sunglasses on, looking hot as fuck, enjoying the day when Ian found him. Stepping in front of the chair Mickey was sitting on, Ian blocked the beams of light which were hitting Mickey's body, slowly giving him a nice tan. Mickey begrudgingly opened his eyes to stare at Ian, pushing his sunglasses down slightly, as if wanting to give Ian a better look of his 'why the fuck are you blocking the Sun' expression.
"What?" He finally asked, pushing his RayBans back up.
"Baby, I need your help killing someone."
Mickey's eyebrows scrunched up in confusion, assessing Ian's face for any sign of humor. When he found none, he blew out an exasperated sigh. "Why?"
"Someone stole my fucking tomatoes."
Ian could see Mickey's eyes close again behind the black glass. "Who?"
"I have no fucking idea. If I did, they'd already be dead. This is the second time, Mick!" He shook his head in disbelief. "First time, I let it slide. Thought it was a bird or some shit. So, I did everything again this past month, made sure everything was better than before, had a near fucking episode over the stress that shit caused me, and now, they get fucking stolen, again!" He was breathing raggedly now, even angrier than before. His shrink's anger controlling methods only worked for a short period of time, he guessed. "We need to kill them."
Ian sat himself down on the chair next to Mickey's, slouching back in defeat. His poor tomatoes. He felt his fingers intertwine with soft, warm ones, Mickey's thumb rubbing soothing circles over Ian's. "We can't kill them," Mickey started. Ian was about to respond how he knew that, how it still made him really fucking angry, but Mickey continued, softly, "without knowing who they are. Once we know who they are, we can slip rat poison into the tomatoes, and have 'em dead in a heartbeat. Can't even pin it on us, 'cause then they'd have to admit they stole it."
Ian's eyes widened slightly, amazed and terrified by his partner at the same time. "I forgot you were a murderer here for a second."
Mickey smirked at Ian's growing smile. "Parole for attempted murder, Red. Need I remind you? Did you forget how much that turned you on?" He was now inching closer to his husband, chin jutting out, seeking out a kiss. Ian complied, even in his angriest moments still horny for his worse half, moving his lips against Mickey's slowly and teasingly.
"We can't kill them." Ian voiced out after they broke apart, now much calmer.
Mickey snorted, settling back in his chair. "No shit."
"We can find out who the fuck it is, though."
"How the fuck you gonna do that? All your tomatoes are gone, right? 'S not like you can just make new ones appear."
Ian thought about it for a second, "Who says I can't? I have my ways."
Mickey nodded mockingly. "Sure, tough guy. Is this the moment I find out I've been married to a wizard?"
"Store-bought tomatoes, Mickey." Ian deadpanned.
"Oh."
"We plant those, and then go on a stakeout." He was already devising a master plan in his head. How they would buy the tomatoes at WholeFoods -- get the expensive ones so the bait was even more tempting, make it look as if Ian grew them himself (even though that was impossible by the rules of time -- but the person had to be stupid enough to steal from a Gallagher after all, so it had to work), and then, wait tonight in the garden, considering how his tomatoes couldn't have been stolen at any other time of day, and try to catch the thief. It was a good fucking plan.
"Why do you keep saying we?"
The voice interrupted his daydream. Confused, Ian looked at Mickey. "You're not gonna help me?"
"Not my problem, man. They're your tomatoes. I'm only here for the murder part, but you backed out of that, so... good luck."
Ian was about to argue, but he thought better of it. Maybe it would be easier to do this alone anyway. Leaning forward, he pressed one last chaste kiss on Mickey's lips, then swiftly got up. "Okay, then. Text me if you need anything. I'm going out."
"Where are you going?" Mickey straightened up for the first time since Ian got there. Ian felt a smile form on his face. His husband was very easy to read.
"Tomatoes, Mick. But, um, not your problem, right?" His voice was teasing and he knew his eyes were glinting with an unspoken challenge. "Don't know if I'll be home tonight. The stakeout might last a while. Guess I'll see you tomorrow. Keep the bed warm for me, would ya'?"
He turned to leave, but Mickey's hurried voice stopped him. "Hey, wait -- hold on a minute."
"Hmm?" So, so easy to read.
Scoffing, Mickey got up. "Let me get changed first. Then, we'll go catch the fucking tomato thief."
The smile Ian gave him was blinding.
----
"Tell me the plan again?"
Mickey was currently observing the expensive as fuck organic fruit in the WholeFoods store, gawking at the prices, but also simultaneously observing his husband as he picked through the best, reddest tomatoes he could find. Between the bitching and the sadness, Ian was all over the place -- it was hard for Mickey to understand why Ian was going so crazy over stolen tomatoes, but the thought of having Ian spend the day doing God-knows what kind of legal and illegal shit made him almost break out in hives. He would rather come along to control the hot mess than "warm the bed" as Ian had so casually put it. Fuck if he was gonna keep anything warm but Ian's dick in his ass.
Ian ignored Mickey's question and shoved a tomato at his face. "Do these look good enough? I want them to look natural, but also really good. What do you think?"
Mickey gave Ian an incredulous look, "Um... those look great... man, just pick whatever the fuck you want. This guy probably isn't very picky if he stole a ripe tomato."
Ian rolled his eyes. "It was a high quality tomato, Mickey." As an afterthought, he added, "Also, it could be a she."
"Maybe it's that fag with the big muscles? Maybe he has a thing for your tomatoes?" Mickey teased, only slightly bothered by the crush the blond guy in apartment 243 had on his tall redhead. It wasn't hard to glance over the sultry looks he gave Ian, or the flirtatious tone. Mickey liked giving Ian endless shit for it, just because of how defensive and uncomfortable Ian got when it was mentioned. It was pretty funny.
"Ugh, God Mickey. Seriously?"
"What? Am I wrong?"
Ian rolled his eyes so hard, Mickey was afraid he'd be shocked by the emptiness he found back there in a moment. Instead, Ian simply grimaced. "That guy really needs to back off. I literally couldn't have flashed the ring in his face more bluntly."
Mickey, using Ian being distracted by the guy, tied the bag Ian had been filling with tomatoes, discreetly moving them away from the spot they'd been standing in the past hour and a half, and towards the cash register.
"If he continues with that shit, I'll just start making out with you in front of him. Should get the point across."
Mickey only hummed in acknowledgment, content with the plan. He hated PDA but Ian made it so natural at times, there was no way he could say no to it.
"Wait, how did we end up here?" Ian glanced around him, only now noticing they were standing in line for the check-out. Mickey shook his head at his husband, who he had to admit was a himbo through and through. "Well, at least we got the tomatoes. The rest is easy."
"What is the plan, anyway?" Mickey repeated the question from before. Now, Ian didn't ignore him. He smirked at Mickey and told him not to worry about it.
"Not to --?" Mickey stuttered. "Ian, your ideas are not top-notch ideas. If I'm gonna try and catch a vegetable thief with you -- which may be the faggest thing I've ever said -- then I need to know the plan."
"Okay, fine." Ian huffed out a breath. "In short, we put these as bait, lure the asshole in, and wait to catch them in the act."
They stared at each other for a moment.
"...that's it?"
"What do you mean?" Ian smiled at the cashier as he took out a ten dollar bill from his pocket, paying for the overpriced vegetables -- or was it fruit? Mickey didn't really give a fuck.
"What do I mean? I mean, this may be the dumbest pan I've ever heard. I mean, sure, the tomatoes are good, but what, you just wanna have a stakeout the entire night? You do know the guy probably won't steal them straight away? We need to give it some time. Work out the suspect list, make sure we know who we're looking for."
Making it out onto the streets of Westside, Mickey was pleasantly greeted by the spring air -- he wouldn't admit it yet, but the Westside was something he was adapting to quite quickly. What used to make him uncomfortable when they first signed the lease changed completely in the past couple of months they'd been living here. It wasn't easy, but as the furniture rolled in, and as the apartment started feeling more like home, the whole "middle-class" life sort of followed. Both Mickey and Ian were still major fucking Southside trash. But now, they were Southside trash that lived in a pretty nice place that didn't have too many murders and attacks per day. That way, when they did happen, it felt nostalgic for Mickey. More special.
"I keep forgetting who you are. Takes a thief to catch a thief, I guess."
"I love how high of an opinion you have of me, Gallagher." Mickey replied teasingly, choosing to take it as a compliment.
Ian smiled, wrapping an arm around Mickey's shoulders, "The highest, baby."
Endeared by the nickname, Mickey blushed slightly. "C'mon man. Let's get back to the apartment. We got a stakeout that needs planning."
Ian nodded, but the arm stayed put the entire way home. Mickey didn't mind one bit.
----
"What about the lady from apartment 193? The one with the weird-ass dog?"
"Ian, she's, like, a hundred years old."
"I don't know, Mick. Seems kinda suspicious."
They were sitting on their newly-bought sofa in the living room, beers in hand, discussing the potential suspect list. Ian had his phone out, writing the names of the possible culprits down, attempting to uncover the thief by the way the crime was executed. It wasn't going that well.
Ian's suspect list was a mile long, all ranging from old women who had complimented his tomatoes months ago, to the weird guy who gave him the stink eye when they first moved in for no apparent reason. "He's out to get me, Mick. I know it." Mickey had told him to shut the fuck up, and presented his own suspect list.
His was a little more realistic, containing names such as Alan who most certainly didn't like the couple -- "maybe the reason for that is the tantrum, Mickey." "shut the fuck up, Ian." -- and the chick whose daughter had a massive crush on Mickey.
"Maybe she thinks I'm some sort of pedo. Not cool, man."
"She would have called the cops, Mickey, not stolen my tomatoes. Also, the whole thing is pretty cute."
Mickey blanched. "She's fifteen! And has a crush on me."
"She's cute, acting all flustered when you casually say "good morning" to her. She probably doesn't even know we're gay."
The girl, Courtney, lived in the apartment a couple doors down from theirs, and her apparent crush on Mickey was beyond adorable to Ian. She was amazed by his thug appearance, and she made it clear in the way she greeted him whenever she passed by the couple, ignoring Ian wholeheartedly. Mickey hadn't even noticed it until Ian pointed it out one night, and when he did, Mickey grimaced and groaned, muttering about how he really didn't need to be the cause of some kid's daydreams.
"Her mother is out to get me. And the way to get me is through you -- everybody knows that."
Ian's chest swelled at the probably insignificant sentence in Mickey's mind. "Aww, Mick. That's really sweet."
"I am sweet."
"It's not the mother. We have to come up with something else."
"Ugh." Mickey groaned. "Why can't we just do this the old-fashioned way?"
Ian simply raised an eyebrow.
"Listen, you already planted the bait when we got back, we have somewhat of a suspect list -- now, we just set up the camera."
"Camera?"
"Yes, Ian. A fucking camera."
"Where the fuck are we gonna get a camera?"
Mickey rolled his eyes. "Carl? He's probably got access to those hidden camera thingies at work, right? We just have him snatch one for us. We'll give it back." He then added as an afterthought, "Maybe."
Ian thought about it for a second and then sighed. "Fine, we'll do it your way."
"Better than crouching in a bush of roses in the middle of the night, Ginger."
"Yeah, I guess you're right." Ian agreed, texting Carl simultaneously asking for the 'camera thingy'.
"Also, I'd probably never, under any circumstances, do that shit. Doesn't matter how much I love you."
"Uh-huh." Ian smiled at Mickey, amused.
"I'm serious." He affirmed. "Never. No fucking way."
---
"I can't believe you made me do this shit." Mickey grunted as he crouched behind a rose bush, eyes trained on Ian's vegetable patch.
"Your plan didn't work, so we're doing it my way."
"Well, I didn't really plan for the camera to get fucking broken!"
Their thief was way more skilled than they had initially thought. After they got the camera from Carl, Ian hid it well, making sure it caught the asshole on tape once they attempted to steal his goods again. And when, a couple days later, his store-bought tomatoes were ruined again, this time, squashed deliberately in the garden, he was so happy Mickey had the bright idea to record it.
Until he found the camera squashed along with the tomatoes. It still worked somewhat, and when Ian saw there was a video on it, his hopes had immediately risen, only to be squashed like the poor tomatoes when he saw the video got cut off in the middle of the night, right before the murder had taken place.
"We are gonna do this my way. And then, we'll kill them." He had told his husband.
"Sure, man. The red blood will fit right in with the tomatoes."
"Stakeout."
"No, Ian."
"The sex you'll get if you do this with me will be nothing like you'd ever experienced."
Mickey scoffed, "Sure."
Ian gave him a look full of mischief, and leaned into his ear to whisper his intentions. "Three words, baby: handcuffs, blindfold, tongue. As someone who claims he doesn't like ass-licking, you sure as fuck make some sexy, loud noises when I try it."
And that's how Mickey was there in the garden, at three in the morning with Ian, his dumbass husband, waiting for the thief to appear. Ian had planted another bait, and decided to have a stakeout that night, after loudly flaunting to the other gardeners how good his tomatoes had grown -- "They'll take the bait, Mikhailo, stop giving me that look."
"The ground is really fucking cold, man. Can't believe you convinced me to do this shit. No sex is worth this."
Ian, in response, pressed an open-mouthed kiss to Mickey's neck. "You sure about that?"
"Yeah..." Mickey sighed in content. When Ian tried pulling away, he muttered, "No. Don't stop."
"Eyes on the tomatoes. You'll get your prize later."
Just as Mickey was about to protest, a figure appeared, inching towards Ian's vegetable patch. The couple stilled, eyes squinting, trying to see who the thief was -- who the fuck was it that had so easily crushed Ian's dreams of becoming a gardener, and had forced them to sacrifice their Friday night, crouching in the bushes instead of loudly fucking in their bed.
When the figure stepped even closer, Ian gasped. The culprit's face wasn't even covered and when Mickey saw who it was, he couldn't help it.
He laughed.
He laughed so hard, tears streamed down his face -- he wheezed at the sight they were greeted with. Ian hit his bicep roughly, but it was too late.
The girl had noticed them. She jumped in fear at the noise and her eyes zeroed in on the two men. Her young face paled and her eyes widened in fear.
"You!" Ian accused, jumping up to his feet, not as amused as Mickey was.
The girl jutted out her chin in defiance, not scared one bit. "Yeah. Me."
Ian stared at the fifteen-year-old. He had once considered her cute -- the crush she had on Mickey being nothing more but sickly sweet to him, perfect teasing material. But now, as he realized she was deliberately sabotaging his tomatoes because of, what? Jealousy? Oh, he was pissed.
"Why, Courtney? I've been working hard on those vegetables."
"Fruits." Courtney replied and Ian gaped at her, as Mickey kept on laughing.
"Not the point. Why? Are you jealous or something?"
"Why would I be jealous?" She asked, still acting tough for a girl who had just been caught in the act.
"Then why are you doing this?"
"Because..." She glanced at Mickey who was still on the wet ground, observing the exchange. "Your tomatoes look better than mine, and I was planning on giving Mr. Milkovich my tomatoes but it wasn't gonna work if yours looked better. So, I took yours."
Mickey busted out laughing again. This time tears were actually streaming down his face, clouding his vision. "Mr." Wheeze. "Milkovich." Wheeze.
Courtney looked down, embarrassed. "Maybe I was a little jealous. I just wanted to be noticed."
"Stealing my husband's tomatoes sure got you on my radar, kid." Mickey muttered, still laughing loudly. Perhaps too loudly for three in the morning.
Courtney stilled. "You guys aren't just... roommates?"
Ian shook his head. "No, married."
Her mouth formed an 'oh' shape, and for a moment they stood in silence. Then she laughed, sheepishly. "Well, in that case... I'm sorry?"
Ian was still on the verge of a mental breakdown, but he chose to remain calm. "Just don't do it again, please."
"I won't. I swear." She raised her hands in the air in surrender.
"Go home, kid. It's three in the fucking morning. You're way past hour bedtime." Mickey pitched in from his seat on the soil.
She nodded once again, muttering a quick "sorry", and then ran out of the garden.
Ian turned to Mickey, still shocked. "The root of all of this has been you."
Mickey just smiled. "Not intentionally."
"She wanted to give you her tomatoes. So she ruined mine."
"Your tomatoes are the only ones I care about."
"This better not be a metaphor for my balls."
"Oh, I like those too."
Ian grinned at his husband. "At least we figured out who it was." He put his hand out towards Mickey. Mickey got the hint and grabbed it, pulling himself up.
"Yeah. It was the little girl all along."
Ian snorted, still a little angry.
"How about now, you and I go back to our warm, comfy bed where you can tie me up and fulfill your promise."
"You're not tired?" Ian raised his eyebrow at Mickey.
The smile Mickey gave him was genuine. "For you? Never."
"Maybe I could fulfill my promise. It'd get my mind of off the tomatoes."
"You can always use me as a distraction." Mickey wrapped his arms around Ian's neck and pulled him down, slotting their lips together.
"I'll show you how to handle your tomatoes properly." Mickey teased and Ian all but shoved him  back to the apartment.
The sex that night was fucking amazing. Mickey realized he wouldn't mind playing detective again if this was the reward he got. Suddenly, Ian's wish to plant thise tomatoes was the best thing that could have happened to Mickey in the long run. He wasn't surprised, though.
Ian really knew how to make the most of everything for Mickey. It was probably why he loved him so much.
This was a night Mickey would probably never forget.
For the prompt thing: kaiba + yuugi + professionalism!
this was fun!! thanks to @dxmichelle for the retail stories. kaiba as a retail worker is like me when I was a retail worker because when i worked at a barnes and noble, i spent a LOT of time perfectly squaring the books. anyway all the kaibacorp adventure park castmembers get some fat fucking pay raise/benefit boosts after this
***
This was all Jounouchi’s fucking fault and Seto was never agreeing to any stupid fucking bets again. When did he become a good duelist, instead of just a lucky one? And he knew it, too, announcing his plans to win the Domino City Invitational with the kind of brash, easy confidence that was a front for nothing, a Roman wall around nothing, with nothing he needed to defend on the other side. As hard to read as a coloring book. Asshole.
“The gods have struck men down for less hubris than this,” Seto snapped, over a game of poker at Yuugi’s weekly game night. Mokuba had badgered him into attending after their return from the yearly strategic planning retreat with the board. You need to be around normal people! No more sharks in people suits!
“So what? You don’t believe in higher powers, Rich Boy.”
 “In my experience, a god and a higher power are two separate things."
“Oh, okay, Neeshee. Maybe you don’t believe in me, but you do believe in games,” Jounouchi said.
“Devastating insight,” Seto said. “And it’s Nietzsche.”
“Bless you. Don't be rude and sneeze into a tissue next time. Let’s make a bet. When I win the Invitational, you… pick up all my shifts at the Kame Game Shop for a week. I take home all the paychecks, but you do all the work. You know, bog-standard capitalism.”
Seto rolled his eyes. “When you lose, you give the jet a good wash and wax. Then you throw your deck and your Duel Disk into the river, and never duel again.”
“Deal. And I tell you what, Kaiba. One day we’re gonna meet across the field, and you’re going to lose, but it won’t even bother you, because you had just so much fun,” Jounouchi said, extending his hand across the table, with a savage grin.
“Don’t fucking threaten me,” Seto said, shaking his hand.
Asshole! Jounouchi stomped the competition with an ease Seto hadn’t seen since he was fourteen and unceremoniously sacking Inspector Haga at the Pan Pacific Final.
At least Yuugi gave him his own nametag, instead of making him wear Jounouchi’s: a plastic, turtle-shaped badge with a white space for his name. There was a line below it that said MY FAVORITE GAME IS... chess, Seto wrote in moodily, with the marker. Then he affixed it to his dark-green apron, neatly and precisely, just over his heart.
Yuugi nudged the curtain into the stock room aside, wearing a matching apron and smiling like he was trying very hard not to laugh.
“Ready to clock in - oh, no. This is the Kame Game Shop,” he said, reaching up to fix Seto’s name tag, tweaking it to sit slightly at an angle. “Perfect right angles are for squares.”
“A KaibaCorp Adventure Park castmember wouldn’t be caught dead with their nametag this sloppy,” Seto snapped.
“It’s not sloppy. It’s jaunty and playful,” Yuugi corrected. “Now, let’s review. You’re an engineering prodigy, so I’m sure you can handle the register. What do we do when a customer walks in?”
Seto sighed, hands bracing on his hips as his eyes rolled towards the ceiling. That asshole picked up five full days of double shifts.
“Welcome them when they walk in,” he said, as Yuugi nodded along. “Ask if they need any help. If they’re just browsing, leave them alone. Provide recommendations if they ask.”
“And?” Yuugi prompted, raising his eyebrows.
“Wrap and bag their purchases and thank them for wasting my fucking time.”
Yuugi reached up, pressing the tips of his index fingers into Seto’s cheeks. “No! Smile!”
Seto bared his teeth.
“Can’t believe people call you a bad sport,” Yuugi said. “Maybe just smize instead. Go! Clock in! Upsell your own Duel Disk!”
Seto let out a final dramatic huff, took the clipboard off its hook on the wall, and added his billion-dollar contract signature to the timesheet, below several rows of Jounouchi’s scrawl.
***
After four hours, Seto took his lunch break, an all-too-brief thirty minutes in the alley behind the Game Shop, leaning back with one foot propped against the wall, answering emails on his phone with all the speed and fury his thumbs could muster. It was high summer. Vines spilled over the wall on the other side of the alleyway, limp and vibrating with heat. Even the shade under the wall was warm.
The side door opened. He turned his head, preparing a choice little bon mot for Yuugi, and paused, his breath hitching in his chest with a wild regret, birdlike, startled suddenly out of hiding.
He stared at Sugoroku, privately cursing Jounouchi for the nth time for making the fucking bet, winning the fucking Invitational, and putting him here in this fucking alleyway, staring at Sugoroku. It was too late to go back inside. Sugoroku stared back, hoary-haired, stooped under the weight of his years. Even wizened, with skin like old, pale leather, the family resemblances were clear: the same big, warm eyes, the same bright smile, no less weakened for age.
He shuffled out the door, dragging a small garbage bag of recycling beside him.
“Open that up and drop this in, will you please? My back’s not what it used to be.”
“Yes,” Seto said, rapidly stooping to take the bag. Should he add sir? Yes, sir? He hadn’t said 'sir' to anyone in ten years. What was he supposed to say? Sorry. I was not myself. I was myself, but the worst version. It was the beta release of me and we have removed the bugs (the murder bugs) in advance of stable release. All remaining bugs are acceptable. We have added accurate legal and medical disclaimers to all our SolidVision and Virtual World products about how the sensory intensity of KaibaCorp proprietary holographic technology may exacerbate existing heart conditions. I am taking good care of her and I love her and she loves me. Who? Her. The dragon.
He dropped the bag into the recycling bin several steps away and turned around to face Sugoroku, summoning his resolve with an inhale, exhale, firm and deep.
“How’s your first day?” Sugoroku said.
“My company isn’t going down in flames without me,” Seto said. “Color me surprised.”
“How’s your first day here?”
“Enthralling. The adrenaline high of consumer retail is really just something else - ”
“Speak up, I can’t hear you over all that racket you’re making,” Sugoroku said. Seto paused, bewildered, mouth half-open - and shut it, color flaring across his face.
“Uh - fine,” he muttered. “It’s fine. I helped an eight-year-old pick out a board game.”
“Oh?”
“Yes. She came in with all the allowance she’d saved up and she wanted something she could play with her sister. I sold her on mancala."
"That's a classic. Not a board game, but a classic. And hard to sell to children."
Seto scoffed. "I hate the crap they pass off as board games these days, with all the… fiddly, little plastic pieces and the arcane rules. Children get drawn in by the colors, but they don't have patience for the rules, so it ends up forgotten at the bottom of a bookshelf somewhere with half the pieces sucked up in the vacuum cleaner. Mancala is simple. You can play it with a patch of dirt and a handful of gravel. But if you want to win, you need to play with skill and wit. It's timeless. It’s elegant."
"Well, you've sold me. I haven’t played mancala in years. Shall we play tomorrow? During your lunch break?"
Seto said nothing, resisting the urge to bite his lip, a bad habit and a sign of nervousness.
“Yuugi speaks very highly of you, you know,” Sugoroku said. “I’d love to know why.”
He chuckled and shuffled back inside, leaving Seto fuming with an odd, stomach-clenching embarrassment.
He checked his phone. Three more minutes left of his lunch break, and his feet were aching. He should’ve worn different shoes, not the Chelsea boots. Tomorrow. Mancala? Damn Jounouchi to hell. Better shoes.
***
“Excuse me,” the woman said. “Do you have Legendary Heroes II?”
Seto abandoned his task of aligning board game boxes at perfect right angles. Fuck jaunty and playful.
“No. That’s not out until December,” he said. The production issues on Legendary Heroes II were a fucking nightmare, and the thought of making his game developers crunch - making them miserable, overworked, and more likely to quit and get snapped up by Schroeder Corp - gave him hives. So he’d pushed release back to December, allowing the small hit to his stock under the rationale that the holiday retail season would make up for it. But she didn’t need to know that.
“But - it’s my son’s birthday next Saturday, and Legendary Heroes is his favorite game,” she said, hands clenching loosely by her stomach, a gesture of pleading.
“I’m delighted to hear it. It does not change the fact that the game literally does not exist,” Seto said.
“Can you just check in the back? He’s been asking about this for months now,” she said, and Seto clicked his teeth, face slipping into a snarl - from the corner of his eye, he saw Yuugi, watching him.
Smile, he mouthed, and pressed his fingers into his own cheeks, putting on a manic, plastic grin.
“Of course. I’ll be right back,” Seto said, smiling, and stormed away. As expected, he did not find Legendary Heroes II in the stock room. He dawdled, checking his email, firing off a few replies, advising Mokuba on the right way to handle the zesty temperament of their general counsel - this’ll be fun, Mokuba said, I get to run KaibaCorp without you, like, dying or something - WHAT? - and stashed his phone back into his apron pocket.
“My apologies,” he said, returning to the woman. “We don’t have it in stock. If you’d like to pre-order it, it’ll be available just in time for Christmas. Just log on to the KaibaCorp website and enter the Kame Game Shop as your pick-up location. If you’re still looking for a birthday gift, I strongly suggest the new Duel Disk. The design is much better for children than the old one - lighter and more streamlined, with less intense haptics. If he already has a Duel Disk, he can bring that in for a trade-in.”
“Oh, perfect!” she said. “We'll do that. Thank you. You’ve been so helpful.”
“You’re welcome. Have a fantastic day,” Seto said, still smiling. He watched her leave and returned to his board game boxes, feeling hideously, fabulously smug. A customer walked in, carrying a bare Duel Disk under his arm, and Seto shot him a cheerful welcome. The man ignored him, heading straight to Yuugi at the counter.
***
Yuugi swallowed, squared his shoulders, and lifted his chin.
"I'm sorry. We cannot accept a Duel Disk return without a box or a receipt," he said. Clearly stolen.
"But I bought it here two weeks ago. And the stupid piece of shit is defective," the man said. "I want my money back!"
Loud enough that Seto, re-stocking towards the front of the store, turned towards them, with open curiosity.
"What's the nature of the defect?" Yuugi said.
"It just doesn't fucking work. I don't know what else to tell you," the guy said. "Are you gonna do the return or not?!"
His least favorite type of customer: smashing reason apart with the baseball bat of belligerence. Yuugi steeled himself for the inevitable slew of insults.
"Sir. I can't do the return without a receipt - "
A hand came down on his shoulder, pulling him with polite insistence out of the way. Seto, with a canny, feline smile, the kind that foretold bloodshed on the dueling field.
"Oh no, Yuugi," he said. "Let me handle this."
I Just Really Miss Him ~ Webpril Day 25
Tumblr media
A/N: Peter is unusually quiet during his stay at the compound. Tony is going to figure out why. I decided to do a bit of a different take on the prompt fill than what most people might expect. I kept it a bit more lighthearted and just Tony giving some good ol' fashioned advice. I didn't have time to read it over, so apologies for any small errors scattered around. I hope you enjoy! x
~Read it on AO3
~Read it on FFN
“Something’s eating you. What’s up?”
Tony sat on the dark leather lounge chair across from Peter, who was sitting at the almost exact centre of the couch. Tony was leaned forward, his hands locked, arms braced on his knees. Tony was starting to feel a stress headache - or an eye strain headache, not that it mattered - emerging so he felt a break was in order. And here he was.
Peter almost felt like he was at a psychologist appointment. He half expected Tony to bring out a notebook and pen and begin asking him about his childhood, and what traumas he’d experienced up until that point.
“Nothing, don’t worry about it…” Peter continued typing on his laptop, the soft sounds of clacking keys filling the silence.
Tony had been busy. Really busy. In the leadup to Peter’s visit to the compound that week, Tony had laid down some ground rules. The first was imbuing Peter with the knowledge that although he was welcome to be in the labs alongside Tony, he did not want to hear a peep out of the kid. The second was that Tony would be in charge of the music; his lab, his rules.
The first rule rarely ever lasted more than half an hour, however. So it was with great surprise and eventual concern when Tony realised Peter hadn’t said a single word since he set himself up on the lounge almost four hours prior. Tony saw it as akin to a bird not flying, or a fish without gills - simply unnatural.
“You’re worrying about it, so I’m worrying about it. And I don’t want to have to worry about it. Let’s have a little father-son moment here, c’mon.” Tony tilted his head slightly to the side, brow furrowed.
Flipping his laptop lid closed with a faint smack, Peter pushed it off of his lap and onto the cushion beside him, watching warily for a moment as it bounced a little bit before sitting still.
“Well…” Peter sighed, stalling for a second while he searched for the right words. “I’ve been really busy with the Friendly Neighbourhood Spider stuff, right?”
“Sure.”
“Which means I haven’t really had a lot of time for anything other than homework and helping Aunt May with some of her stuff.”
“So…?” Tony prompted.
“So I’ve kind of been ignoring Ned because I’m really tired and really busy and when I come home I just want those few minutes to myself, y’know?”
“Don’t you guys talk at school, pass notes in class or whatever it is kids do now?”
“This quarter we don’t really have as many classes together, and the ones we do have I’ve maybe been just a little bit on Mars…” Peter winced, feeling like he was just pouring out empty excuses. “So anyways, he hasn’t really been talking to me for the last few weeks.” He paused, trying to dislodge the lump that had appeared in his throat. “I just really miss him.”
Tony was silent for a moment, and Peter was afraid that a wave of judgment and the tough love treatment were about to come flooding his way. The question that Tony followed up with was anything other than what Peter was expecting.
“Have you given yourself a break? And I don’t mean staring at the ceiling in your room listening to angsty music and brooding. I mean just let yourself be a kid?”
Peter thought hard, biting the inside of his cheek. Well, really the answer was a resounding, “no.”
“I don’t want you at the compound next week.” Tony raised a finger in a shush gesture, successfully having anticipated Peter’s jump to protest. “I want you - when you go home tomorrow - to call Ned and do something over the weekend together. Build the biggest Lego set or something.”
“Mr Stark, the Lego set Ned and I have been after is basically like, hundreds of dollars, and it’s huge.”
“You’re getting hung up on the wrong thing here, kid. Don’t worry about the Lego. The point is, just let yourself have one weekend being a high school teenager. Queens isn’t going to fall to pieces if you take a day off.”
“I mean it might.” Peter smirked. Before long, his smile faded once more.
“Look, if Rhodey can forgive me for some of the stuff I’ve done - the less you know the better - I’m sure Ned can forgive you for going AWOL for a few weeks. And hey, I’ve never met him, but on the odd occasion I have listened to - the frankly absurdly high volume - of voice messages you leave on my phone, that doesn’t really seem like Ned.”
“Yeah...I dunno, I think he’s going through some stuff of his own.”
“Call him tomorrow.” Tony stood up and stretched, and Peter swore he could hear some joints popping. “And if he doesn’t pick up, just leave him a few hundred messages. You’re really good at that.”
“Thanks Mr Stark.”
“No problem, kid.”
------------------------------
It had taken - surprisingly - only six call attempts for Ned to pick up, most of them missed due to Peter calling during family dinner time. After a brief and somewhat awkward exchange, they had agreed that that Saturday night - Peter’s usual night at the Avengers compound - would become a games night.
The second they set foot in Peter’s room, he could feel something was off. It was almost pitch black except for the faint light oozing in through his window from the streets below. Outlined against the warm glow, was a rectangular box, and Peter could vaguely see a piece of paper tacked to the side.
They both stepped closer simultaneously, and Peter almost had the fright of his life when Ned exclaimed “Oh my god, no way! How’d you even get this? They don’t even sell these anymore, man, they’re basically vintage and crazy amounts of money!”
The box in question was the Ultimate Collector’s Millenium Falcon set, which held such a cult status and was so incredibly hard to find that Peter wondered how he was even seeing one right there on his bed.
Peter grasped the corner of the piece of paper that was lightly taped to the box, pulled gently, and read the message in slanted block letters.
I think you were looking for this.
-TS
Peter had to wonder if Tony was secretly a mind reader.
______
Monday Morning
“Y/N,” said Jensen as you wandered away from craft services. “Hey, got a sec?”
“For my number one fan always,” you teased, taking a sip of your coffee. “What’s up?”
“I had fun Saturday. I know you’re super busy and all right now but would you maybe want to go out Friday night? We only have a half day,” he said.
“Yeah. Sounds fun,” you said.
“Oh and The Dark Night? You kicked it in the ass. I loved it,” he said, a huge grin on his face. “I can’t wait to be a part of that too.”
“Really?” you asked with a smile.
“Really. This is one of the best sets I’ve ever been on too,” he said. “It’s great.”
“Awesome. Um, when I get a free minute I’d love to pick your brain on some stuff,” you said.
“Sure,” he said. “Yeah, I’d love that.”
“Y/N! We got a problem with the crane camera,” shouted someone from down the lot.
“Duty calls,” you said. “I’ll see you in an hour.”
“Hey,” you said at the end of the day, everyone looking run down after a day of stunts, one person in particular. “Jensen, hold up.”
“Yeah?” he mumbled.
“Are you feeling okay?” you asked.
“Actually not really,” he said.
“Why don’t you pop over to medical?” you asked.
“Y/N-“
“Do we have to do this again? My set, my rules,” you said.
“Fine,” he said. “I don’t want to keep anyone late.”
“Ten minutes and I’ll head over with you.”
“Do I really-“
“Whoa,” said your dad as he came around the corner. “Jay, you do not look good.”
“I’ve heard,” he said. “I’ll take some cough syrup when I get home.”
“Come on, kid. Let’s go,” said your dad as he grabbed his arm.
“Ethan-“
“Want me to call your mother?” he shot back.
“Alright. Dad, I will take Jensen to medical and you go home,” you said. “I promise.”
Ten minutes later Jensen was wincing and frowning as a thermometer was pulled from his ear.
“102. You have the flu, Jensen,” said the on-site nurse.
“I’m fine,” he said. “I feel fine.”
“Bed rest and liquids. If you get warmer or the fever hasn’t broken by morning, go to the hospital,” she said.
“I’m fine,” he said. The nurse stared him down but Jensen gave it right back.
“You got a roommate to keep an eye on that fever of yours just in case?” asked the nurse.
“Is everyone around here my mother?” mumbled Jensen.
“Thank you, Kelsey,” you said, grabbing Jensen by the arm.
You led him outside and he didn’t complain when you got him sat in your car.
“I’m going to drive you home, okay? I’ll come check on you before work tomorrow, see that you’re alright to come in or if we need to delay,” you said.
“I’ll be fine, Y/L/N. You worry too much.”
“Jensen, I really don’t think you should be alone tonight,” you said, carrying his backpack along with some goodies from the pharmacy into his apartment half an hour later.
“I am fine,” he said, sniffling and closing his eyes. “Okay, maybe not fine.”
You frowned and he dug out the thermometer, sticking it under his arm. You grabbed it as soon as it beeped off, flipping it around to him.
“102.2. Oh yes, you are clearly the epitome of health, Jay,” you said.
“Well it’s not like I can get my mom to come over,” he said, wearily closing his eyes.
“Ackles. I’m starting to see you’re very grumpy when you’re sick,” you said.
“Am not,” he said, going to his couch and laying down. You stood by the edge of it, Jensen letting out a small shake. “Can you make me soup?”
“Soup I can do,” you said. You went to his kitchen and started to poke around, heating up a can on the stove after a few minutes. “How you feeling, buddy?”
“Crappy,” he said. “I’m not hungry anymore.”
“Well I’m still gonna make you soup and you can have the leftovers tomorrow,” you said. He mumbled and you finished cooking, storing the rest in a few thermos’ he could toss in the microwave. You hummed and carried over a mug of it, setting it down on the coffee table. He looked worse than before, a shiver leaving him. “Come on. Get in some pajamas, Ackles.”
He sighed and got to his feet, trudging into his bedroom. Fifteen minutes later you knocked on the door, Jensen laying down on the bed in a pair of boxers.
“Trying to see me naked?” he teased. “I’m kidding. What’s up?”
“Here’s your soup and this is for later,” you said, setting the medicine down.
“Thanks,” he said.
“If you’re too sick to come in-“
“I’ll be there. Just give me a few extra breaks,” he said.
“No problem. Feel better Jensen,” you said.
“Hey, Y/N. Uh, not that I’m not already embarrassed enough but would you mind hanging out for a minute?” he asked.
“Not at all,” you said. You stepped into his room and took a seat at his desk, smirking at the figure on top. “A Lyle funko pop? You really are a fan.”
“Shut up,” he laughed before he started to cough.
“I have like fifty in my closet if you ever want more,” you said. “Your apartment is...cozy.”
“It’s small and older than both of us combined but it’s clean and quiet,” he said.
“How long have you been living on your own?” you asked.
“About three years. I’ve had a girlfriend move in for about six months before but that’s it. You said you moved out of your parents place not too long ago?” he asked.
“Two years. I went to my boyfriend’s place. I’ve only been on my own for one. It’s lonelier than I thought it’d be to be honest,” you said.
“Yeah, I get that. I’m thinking about getting a dog. I’d like company to come home to,” he said, snuggling down into his sheets. “So what’d this ex boyfriend do? So I don’t make the same mistake potentially.”
“I would be amazed if you did,” you said, leaning your elbow against his desk, putting your head in your hand. He rolled over in bed and looked at you, sniffling for a moment. “When your ex-girlfriend talked about the sex stuff, did you feel violated?”
“Yeah. He talk to your friends about that stuff?” he asked.
“No. I don’t really want to talk about it, Jensen,” you said. “You won’t make that mistake. I promise.”
“Are we dating?” he said.
“I think so.”
“I think so too,” he said, closing his eyes.
“I think it’s time for bed,” you said with a smile.
“Mhm,” he mumbled.
“Do you want me to call someone to stay over with you just in case you get worse?” you asked.
“You?” he said quietly.
“Alright, I’ll be on the couch if you need me,” you said. You shut off his light for him, Jensen fast asleep before you even left the room. You cleaned up a little in the kitchen before you sprayed his couch with some lysol, letting it sink in for a moment before you laid down. You sat up and looked for a blanket, spotting one in the corner. You hummed as you went to the basket and grabbed it, smiling when you saw a copy of The Dark Woods on his bookshelf. You looked at the other books, some thrillers, some mysteries, some reference and cookbooks. There were a few YA books along with some general fiction.
You tilted your head when you saw one called “Sullivan” with no author. You pulled it out and realized it wasn’t a published book, just a print copy of a story. You flipped through it some, getting to the end and recognizing the name.
“You read Lyle Sullivan fanfic,” you said, glancing back at his bedroom door. “I shouldn’t be surprised.”
You took the copy and smiled as you sat down, skimming through it for a few minutes.
“If you have a copy of this then that means...you follow me on Tumblr. For fuck’s sake,” you groaned. “I made it for fun, to write the prequel stuff I couldn’t put in the books. Apparently you were a winner in the follower giveaway too.”
You set the book down and grabbed your phone, checking your blog for the first time in months. You’d gone on a temporary hiatus and you wouldn’t call it overly popular. It was mostly short stories here and there aside from “Sullivan,” the backstory of Lyle Sullivan and his life before he met Hale.
Shit, you hadn’t even told him that Sullivan was being turned into a proper book. You grabbed the book and put it back on his bookcase, putting your phone away before you sat back down. He was a fan so it made sense and he loved talking about the story with you.
You lay down and sighed, hoping when you brought it up things didn’t get weird.
“Good morning,” you said, Jensen looking rough as he wandered out of his room in a pair of jeans and an oversized hoodie. “How are you feeling?”
“Sucky but better,” he said. “Down to 100 now.”
“Good,” you said, grabbing a glass of water for him. “Take some morning medicine and then I’ll drive us to work if you’re up for it.”
“For sure,” he said. He wandered around the apartment and chuckled. “Did you clean for me?”
“A little. Mostly sprayed lysol,” you said. He nodded and opened his curtains, turning for a moment before he stared at the bookcase, probably seeing something off about it.
“Did you read last night?” he asked. “Not that I have a problem with that.”
You sighed and he walked over, taking his medicine as you poured his soup in a thermos to bring with him.
“I may have spotted that Sullivan book when I got a blanket. It peaked my interest,” you said.
“So how much more of a loser do you think I am than before,” he laughed nervously.
“I don’t think...I have no problem with fanfiction of my stuff. It’s super cool actually. But...I sort of wrote that story,” you said. He raised an eyebrow and shook his head.
“No you didn’t. It’s not a real book. I got it from a blog which again, super embarrassing but-”
“Jensen. It’s my blog,” I said.
“Oh. You’re...oh,” he said.
“Yeah. I wanted to get that out in the open,” you said, pursing your lips.
“Cool. Um, we should get going. You have to get in early I’m sure,” he said as he grabbed the thermos.
“Yeah,” you said, Jensen already walking away and putting on his shoes. “Uh, let’s head out then.”
