They are killing me with their sexual tension. Creekmore Ch.7

I have big and scandalous plans up ahead.

Chapter 7

The first body since the two high school girls had been found. Judging from the decomposition it had been out there for a few weeks.

When Emerson got to the woods on the edge of town, he saw one of the cops that had found her vomiting behind his patrol car.

Once he saw the body he could see why. It wasn’t for the faint of heart.

“Who is she?” asked Emerson, feeling like he was stuck to an anvil sinking to the bottom of the ocean.

The face was completely torn off the skull. Black holes where the nose and eyes were remained. Her blonde dreadlocks were filthy and matted with blood.

“Her ID says Camille Glenn. Twenty-six lived in the mobile homes on Laramore Lane,” answered Burnham.

No one had reported her missing. It was luck that Creekmore had heavy rain yesterday. It washed away the shitty burial job.

The lazy burial job, thought Emerson.

The killer wanted Camille to be found.

The small forest was a popular place for morning runners and high school kids looking to smoke after school. If you wanted to hide a body there you would have to dig deep, not just throw a few shovels of dirt and debris over it.

The sun was starting to peak over the trees. Birds began chirping. Life filled the air even though death was all around.

“Footprints? Tire tracks?” asked Emerson even though he already knew the answer.

Burnham clenched his jaw, tearing his eyes away from what was left of the girl.

“Rain washed them away if there was any to begin with.”

Emerson offered a curt nod.

As he drove back to the precinct, Emerson was deep in thought.

He envisioned the evidence board him, Burnham, and a few others had set up. Pictures of the victims, names, locations, possible connections, he had memorized it.

He mentally added Camille Glenn.

His stomach hurt. This had been one of the most brutal murders he had ever seen. Normally it was a gunshot wound, a stab wound, blunt force trauma, but nothing like this. This was evil.

He actually felt sick and he hadn’t felt like that after seeing a body since his first year on the job.

Emerson felt a darkness settling into his mind. Almost like a depression though he wasn’t depressed. His life was actually in a good place right now.

Ever since their first date nearly four weeks ago, Emerson and Gwyn had seen each other almost every day. Most of the time it was dinner after work, sometimes their schedules only allowed for a quick coffee. But they had made time for each other.

In fact, he was the happiest he had been in a long time. Then why the cloud of doom?

Emerson shook his head, trying to clear his mind. He pulled into the parking lot and braced himself for a long day.

When she wasn’t working on commissioned pieces, Gwyn worked at an art gallery downtown. Today they were switching the exhibits around so she had gotten there early.

Paintings and sculptures that had been on display for over two months were taken out and replaced.

She was trying to center a watercolor Impressionist painting when she heard her boss walking up to her.

Nancy was in her 50s and looked like exactly the type of woman who would run an art gallery. Stern but approachable and very kind once you got to know her. She reminded Gwyn of the teacher you hated at first but grew to love.

“Did you hear they found another body this morning?” she said, chewing at her maroon painted nails.

Gwyn’s eyes went wide, “Where?”

“The woods. The Creekmore Bulletin posted about it a few minutes ago,” answered Nancy, staring at the watercolor as if to distract herself.

Gwyn made Nancy pull up the article on her phone. As she read it her stomach dropped. Her first thought was of Emerson.

Knowing he had seen that girl. Or what was left of her. Shockingly, The Bulletin hadn’t really censored details.

Gwyn knew Emerson was a seasoned detective but still. Seeing something like that was bound to have an affect.

She found her thoughts were of him most of the time. Where before they had centered around her work or other hobbies.

They had only spent a little under a month together but she was beginning to feel like she had known him a lot longer than that.

He was potent. Was that the right word?

Everything about him filled her senses.

Emerson grabbed his coat before Burnham or anyone else could say another word to him. He had been awake since 4 a.m. and he was ready to go home and take his mind off evidence boards and skinless faces.

As he stepped out the precinct doors, his phone rang.

“Hey cowboy, how does dinner at my place sound?”

Gwyn’s voice floated through the phone providing Emerson with a boost to his mood and energy.

“That sounds wonderful actually. I can pick something up on the way if you’d like? I’m about to leave the office,” he said.

“I could go for some Thai food…” answered Gwyn.

Gwyn heard a knock on her door. She skipped over to it knowing it was Emerson.

“Well if it isn’t the most handsome delivery man in town,” she said.

Emerson offered a faint smile as he walked in.

Something was off. Gwyn could already tell.

“It’s funny you like drunken noodles. That’s what my niece likes too,” Emerson said as he set the take-out on the counter.

“She has good taste,” Gwyn replied, moving to hug him from behind.

He turned to face her. His eyes looked exhausted.

“I missed you,” she said softly.

Emerson bent his head to kiss the tip of Gwyn’s nose. They were still somewhat shy around each other, sometimes hesitant to make the first move. Though today his mind was too concerned with other things to be filled with nerves.

“And I you,” he replied.

Gwyn clasped both hands around his neck, gazing at him.

“I take it you don’t want to talk about work?”

Emerson ran his thumb over her chin and shook his head.

And just like that their moment was gone as he turned to plate the food that was sure to be getting cold.

Gwyn glanced over at Emerson. He had been spinning the same section of Pad Thai around his fork for 10 minutes.

“Is your food not good? You can have some of mine?” she said with a mouthful of noodles.

Emerson shrugged, “I’m not that hungry. I had a long day.”

Gwyn frowned, “Wouldn’t a long day mean you were starving?”

The detective’s eyes flicked up to meet hers, “Not in this case.”

Literally, he thought.

Gwyn took his plate from him and set both on the coffee table.

“Are you tired? Maybe you should lay down.” she remarked, pushing him playfully onto his back.

The soft leather caressed Emerson’s head. He closed his eyes. He felt Gwyn trail kisses along his jaw.

He felt her body weight hovering above him and he reached to skim a hand through her hair. Though their moment was once again ruined as the image of Camille Glenn’s skinless face barreled its way into his mind.

Emerson sat up and massaged his temples with three fingers. Gwyn sat up beside him.

“What’s wrong?” she asked quietly.

She could tell something was troubling him. Whether or not he was too stubborn to reveal it to her was still yet to be known.

Gwyn gently rubbed circles on his back with her palm, awaiting his response. Though she already knew what it would be.

The dead girl in the woods.

He looked at her, his mouth covered with a fist. They sat in silence for a moment before he caressed the side of her face.

“Nothing you need to worry about,” he said.

As if she didn’t read the news.

“Emerson….” she began, treading lightly.

Their time to talk was over as he leaned over and kissed her. His hands began to roam.

I guess I can let him off the hook this time, she thought as she sighed into his mouth.

They had still not been intimate with each other. Hell she didn’t even know if they were an item. Was that a thing?

Was acknowledging exclusivity a thing for people their age?

Gwyn hadn’t been in a serious relationship since she was 28. The last remaining year of her twenties until now had been filled with flings, dates, friends with benefits and the like.

It wasn’t until four months ago when she had turned 33 that she decided she wanted something more. She wanted to start building a life with someone.

Did she want Emerson to be her boyfriend?

Yes, she thought as goosebumps rose on her skin from his sensual kisses.

How long was long enough to be official?

She had been out of the relationship game for too long.

Gwyn let Emerson move over her. She looked up at him. At the man who was fast on his way to earning her adoration.

She took his face in her hands, momentarily preventing him from planting anymore kisses.

He blinked slowly, saying nothing.

Emerson studied her. He could see the cogs in her mind turning. She was thinking about something just as he was trying not to think of something.

“What is it?” he asked.

“Nothing I just like looking at you,” Gwyn remarked.

He chuckled, turning his face to kiss her hand.

Gwyn wanted him more in that moment than she had in any other.

“Do you want to go in the other room?” she asked, feeling anxious as soon as she said it.

Emerson held her gaze, “I do...but not tonight.”

He wanted their first time together to be special. He wanted to think of nothing but her in that moment. And if they were to have that moment tonight, his mind would be elsewhere.

Brief disappointment flashed across Gwyn’s face. Emerson caught it.

“Work was hard today. I can’t stop thinking about it. That’s all,” he reassured her.

She smoothed his hair. He was tired. She could tell.

“Stay here tonight,” she said.

“Gwyn….”

She sat up, taking Emerson’s hand.

“I think we have known each other long enough for you to spend the night. And sleep,” she added. “Relax.”

She offered the last part as a joke to lighten the tension.

“Sleep sounds nice,” Emerson said, a yawn escaping.

Gwyn noticed how weary he looked. Today had been a long day indeed. He looked haunted. She wanted to help.

“I don’t know...I am exhausted,” he said.

Gwyn rolled her eyes, “Emerson. When I said sleep I meant sleep.”

His eyes searched hers, “I know but…”

Gwyn undid the top button of his grey shirt.

“But nothing. You're staying. We are sleeping. It’s settled.”

Emerson couldn’t help but smile as he followed her to her bedroom.

A Lon Chat

So we did the first chat for patrons tonight, on Discord. This is an edited transcript. This is an example of the kinds of chat we’ll be doing at the $5 and $10 reward levels.

We covered some of the upcoming story, world-building, color palettes and web design.

When Kel explores a new section of the forest, they introduce themselves to the trees.

One of the interesting changes about having the neural interface active is that over time the trees may start answering back.

There's a lot of rock and forest and a valley. It's not a huge valley, but winds away along a river. There was a lot of erosion before Ama started terraforming, so the topology is kind of post-erosion planted. But this is a relatively young area of mountains. Basically the mountains are jagged but the valley is not.

There was a glacier here, before.

Oh, the planet was pretty cold before Ama got there. One of the first things she did, terraforming, was to shift the albedo to warm things up. This was a pretty rapid process at first, but she has a pretty good handle on albedo control since one of the major projects she was designed around was stopping global warming.

The early years on Avalon involved a ton of "mousetrap bots" spreading across the planet to accomplish this albedo shift and to start growing the power network.

There are a couple of continents on Lon, but they actually are on the "mainland" they're just not in an otherwise settled part of it. It's one of the higher mountains behind them, and not particularly easy to get to, but well placed for a communications station.

Because it has a good line of sight to Ama's asteroid and is high up and low interference from the power networks on the ground.

Anyway, the way my brain works, I can get into "graphic design mode" and do art, or "web design mode" and do web design and web graphics, or "writing"... so I tend to do writing for a while and then shift gears to illustrate. It's part of why it would be so much faster for me to have someone else handling the art and web--I wouldn't have to keep shifting gears away from writing.

I cannot even start to explain how many hours I've spent looking for the base pictures

Like, the "La Petite Android" picture? Has something like 20 different photos in it, composited. Anything planetary is from Nasa.

But Ama herself is composited out of like, 7 people plus an asteroid and some spiderwebs and broken glass

Which is, you know, appropriate for an android with 50 personalities who builds herself out of data and the available materials.

I posted at the $10 level a new picture called "Bubbles of Memory" which is a fun mashup of actual bubbles and glass sphere photographs

That picture shouldn't be done yet, but I forgot where I was in the story, made that, and then realized I hadn't talked about those things yet in chapter 6. They're more "chapter 9" (chapter 2 of Lon Ago...)

Anyway, your icon is high contrast but engaging, so I approve, lol

Alright, so first priority for me, since I always do the web at night, was to avoid glaring whites and blacks

Also, I see a lot of chromostereopsis, so a red-black is going to look farther away to me than a blue black.

So I messed around and found #140000, which is this sort of inky burgundy black, and the fact that it's a little red means everything on the page is going to have a little more dimension for me and anyone who sees the way I do.

Second priority is a "white" but I wanted something easy on the eyes. So that gives us the "pale", an ecru-ish color.

It helps that they look good together.

So then we need accents. A little darker for the ecru, and a little lighter for the red-black.

I've got a google doc with this all laid out, I know you're shocked.

Every color picker I've found has an option to enter a hex code. I use photoshop to find the hex code, but any color picker, you pick the color, it pops up a hex code.

Since css uses hex codes, having a list of hex codes is hecking useful.

This is a learning process

My primary objection is when people make a "professional" theme that's supposed to be for businesses and there are 16 shades of black

Anyway, you'll notice i have like 8-12 colors in each site

And they group in families... a couple light creamy colors that would be on the same paint chip, a couple of dark colors, ditto, some blues, some accent colors. I pulled the blues and accent colors directly from my artwork.

Starting with the chillwave movement and French touch acts and artists in the late 2000′s, music with a decidedly 80′s influence has been in vogue for the better part of a decade now. Proto-synthwave acts like Anoraak, Justice, and M83 helped start and continued to stoke the fires of the 80′s revival. By the early 2010′s, acts like Com Truise and Mitch Murder began perfecting and popularizing 80′s influenced electronic sounds, and some offshoots of those movements followed with a deadset intention on perfectly emulating those neon 80′s vibes. Outrun differed from synthwave, chillwave, and vaporwave in that the intent seemed to be to recreate those specific sounds utilizing equipment and techniques from that bygone era. Acts like Betamaxx, Lazerhawk, and Miami Nights 1984 created landmark albums and EPs that led to a steady increase in the internet’s thirst for the sounds of yesteryear. Today, we have artists like Carpenter Brut, Gunship, and Power Glove doing things like releasing physical albums, playing at music festivals, and soundtracking apps and major video games. As a result, though, the outrun synthwave movement has also become saturated with people that want to emulate the sound of the 80′s, so it’s become a bit more difficult to find those diamonds. One such absolute precious stone in that rough is Jim Govoni’s project Botnit. Having been a huge fan of his intricate melodies and incredibly punchy and polished work for quite some time, I felt like Jim’s work was a best kept secret that is severely underrated. Having truly considered his work among the best that the entire genre has to offer, I was elated when he agreed to an interview. The resultant conversations that followed were way too long to post, so I’ll stick with just the highlights of my interview with Jim Govoni (Botnit).

1. What is the story behind the moniker "Botnit"?

It doesn't mean anything as a matter of fact. When I first started making tunes, it was under the name "Bill vs. the World", which was really cheesy electronic tunes with secretly-recorded audio of my friend Bill yelling at video games played over it, honestly: https://billvstheworld.bandcamp.com/ When I started making serious music, this didn't really work out, so I needed a better name. My friend (who later put out synthwave tunes under the name Roburai) and I were regulars at a gym at the time, and developed a fairly strong micro-language. I worked in a few from my past playing video games with my younger sister. The video game Tekken 2 had a fighter named Baek Doo San, this somehow transformed into Nit San Face for short, and when it transferred to Roburai chats, the 'nit' part became a suffix to other words, like Beentnit, Fartnit, and Botnit was just one of those. When it was time to pick a name, he recommended to just take Botnit, so I did.

2. How would you describe your own music?

Tough question, I think emotion is a big part of music, when it lacks it, I sort of sit there and wonder what the hell the point is. I can remember back in 2012 when I started making serious synthwave, that I wanted to be able to make tunes with feelings, to allow a person feel a certain way about a song, without having to force-feed them vocals as instructions on how they should feel. My only real goal was to have a nice little package of 10 songs, or 8 in the case of State of the Art, and have it all sound like it was made by the same guy at the same time, which was difficult as the albums ranged from 6 months to a year and a half in completion time. Obviously you change a little bit over time, so it's tricky. I think all it takes to make evocative music is to let the synths do the talking for you, so that's what I do. I don't crush you with heavily compressed Drumulator kicks and bass arps and upside down crosses, because it's been done already by many copycats and phonies, quite frankly. At the time I started, Mitch Murder was one of the few artists to put lots of old samples in their tunes, and I took a cue from him, speaking of copycats.

3. What are your greatest influences (artists, experiences, weather, etc.)?

Musically Mitch's "Current Events" and Betamaxx's "Interface" were giant influences, as well as MPM Soundtracks, who made some synthwave that has yet to be surpassed in my own opinion (Summer of '84, original, NOT the Flashworx remix). Like a lot of people back then, the movie "Drive" definitely set something in motion for me, but I think it was more about an aesthetic than the two big tunes that came from that film. Almost more important, I used to work at a video arcade in the late 90's, and those experiences shaped a good number of tunes ('Hi-Score', 'Arcade Cowboy', 'I'm Somebody Tonight')

4. What is your opinion on the ever-changing structure of independent music?

This could go on forever, but all I will say as a main point is that I like how social media helps people get exposure. Bandcamp helped me incredibly, as did soundcloud. But a big problem is that whoever promotes themselves the most wins, they get the most plays, they get the most attention, because they self-promote. I don't self-promote really unless like, I'm trying to raise 100 buyers for a vinyl release for it to be manufactured, and I'll post twice about it. There's a few synthwavers, including one I have met in person, who I feel makes supremely inferior music to me, if I'm to be honest. The guy's very nice, but I think his synthwave is objectively bad - though he has 20 times the followers because he promotes the shit out of himself, nonstop each day, so you can either have 100,000 people come across your music and 2,000 like it, or 1500 people come across you music and 900 people like it, I think I'd take the latter. But it just sort of seems like connections, pay to play (promote), and "what's hot" will always be king. At least in independent music also, you can be successful and not have to look like a model also. It's not a coincidence that somehow the most popular singers all don't look like weathered clock tower keepers, but that is another topic for another time. :-)

5. Does making music pay the bills? Is it more of a dedicated hobby?

Definitely a hobby at this point, I never really had aspirations of it becoming a career, as I started making music when I was 33 years old, and already had a career. I put out albums in 2013, 2014 and 2017, and I haven't actually made any new music since August 2017, and don't really have any plans to make more right now. (I think retiring in 2015 really hurt me). Every now and then I think about breaking the keyboard back out, but I haven't yet, as I don't have such a desire to anymore. I like making the tunes, but it's so unbelievably time-consuming. You could work for 3 hours on tunes and come away with nothing. I simply can't afford that at this point in my life. As for paying the bills, I lucked out this year as a very well-known Twitch streamer started playing my tunes on his streams, and they were added to some Spotify playlist based on him. Revenue from that allowed me to buy a new computer this year after about 9 months of saving botnit money. So I can't stress enough if you're an artist, get your tunes on Spotify/General Digital Distribution if you want anyone to really hear it. Bandcamp is dead, they just don't know it yet.

6. What do you do for a living, and do you like it?

Some of my coworkers know my artist name and look it up from time to time, so I will be careful here. I work as a network engineer a major New England university. Do I like it? I like it when the internet works, less so when it does not. There's a pretty good work/life balance in higher education, a workplace not driven by profits and corporate greed is a great thing, but it's tough - Early in my career we were rolling out wireless internet to buildings that never had it before, like dormitories, or adding it all over a building instead of centrally locating it in a student lounge or something. We were like white knights bringing freedom of wireless computing to people. Fast forward 10 years, and people are upset when they can't watch 4K netflix on their 3 wireless devices simultaneously, and only pulling down moderately awesome speeds that beat anything they could get at home. Wireless went from a privilege to a commodity, like water and electricity, your sewer bill, and some of that shine will never really come back. Some days I wish I ran a taco truck, or was a winemaker or something, but that's no cake life either. Most people don't love their jobs, but you find something you're good at, and you just try to do good work.

7. What are some other things you enjoy about life besides art?

Video games, definitely a part of my DNA, retrogames specifically, Genesis, PlayStation 1, Dreamcast. 90's arcade games (it's somewhat of a secret that I'm actually much more of a fan of the 90's than the 80's). I spend a lot of my time around video games, though it's waned in the last few years as I move on with my life and there's other things that need to be done instead. Sometimes I think I'm less of a video game fan and more of a nostalgia fan. I like dining out, when a new restaurant in my city opens up, I like checking it out, having a fancy cocktail. I like wine a lot, going to Napa Valley on my honeymoon was a great experience, and someplace I can see retiring someday (I'm 38 years old, Jesus). I used to like running, 5k's mostly, but have done a 10k and a half marathon, though I don't run anywhere near what I used to these days. We cook a lot, and go to the Boston Ballet about 3 or 4 times a year, which is a wholly expensive experience overall, but my wife enjoys it very much, and I dig it too, it's a fun night out. I think sometimes I don't enjoy enough about life than I should. I'm approaching middle age now and I've never been out of North America, not that I've had a real desire to, but I need to spend more time enjoying little things that might not register as a real event if a day were to be summed up, just something to be happy about.

8. As a known music fan, what are some of best musical experiences you have had with other people's music?

I don't think I ever told this story, but I used to be a focus group game tester for Harmonix here in Boston. I was a fan of their first music video game FreQuency for the PlayStation 2, and before Amplitude came out, I was Harmonix's forums moderator, so they would occasionally bring me in to test new games. I playtested Amplitude, 2 Karaoke Revolution games, an Eye Toy game also for PS2, and Rock Band 1, all before they were released to the public. I went to the Guitar Hero and Rock Band release parties in Boston, that was a hell of a time. I applied to be a game tester when Guitar Hero 1 was in production, but didn't get the job (the pay was terrible anyway, sour grapes). A lot of the bonus songs in those games were Harmonix employees, so meeting them was really cool, and going to all their concerts in the mid-2000's was a unique thing, special slice of life, something that you can really only do in your early 20's. I even helped a bit with Guitar Hero II forum moderation (I'm listed in the Thank You's in the game credits). Synthwave wise, I can remember being on the third date with my future wife, and playing her Mitch Murder's "In the News" to demonstrate what kind of music I liked. And before that, riding the train to Boston listening to Betamaxx's "Senior Year '84" and "Contra", wondering how the hell me made such cool tunes, and not thinking I would ever make anything like that.

9. Also, what are some of the most memorable moments for you in your own musical journey?

Too many to list, but I'll try: Being a fan of New Retro Wave and them picking my album for album of the week twice, back when they actually answered my emails (though it was 2013, so it might have been the only synthwave release that week :-)) There was a little synthwave meetup in 2015 with Marko Maric, Protector 101 and myself, hell of a fun time. I've seen Com Truise and Toro y Moi live in the last couple years, both big influences, DJ Tiesto and Paul Oakenfold in 2000 and 2001 respectively, though I don't fancy live music so much. Seeing Maniac Synth's music video for Hi-Score was mindblowing to me, and super awesome. Related strictly to my music, I'm pretty selective about a song making it to an album - there's no more than 10 tunes per album, and I want there to be no fillers. For this to happen, there has to be a point in making a tunes where it just clicks, you get an idea to try something, and either by mistake or on purpose, you play it back, hearing this tune for the first time, and you're just smiling stupidly because you realize you just made a new album track. It's an intoxicating high actually. Oddly enough I'm far enough removed from my early pre-Vivid Memories tunes from early 2013 that I'm already nostalgic about it when I listen back. I remember time alone in my apartment when I could bang out 1 song a week, music production was all new, and how somehow synthwave was just more relevant back then.

10. Ever have anything particularly weird happen while touring or playing shows (if applicable)?

I've never played live, I don't really have the setup. I could just get up there and play mp3's and push buttons and bob around like an idiot, I guess. There's a guy in San Francisco who runs a club that's asked me to come out and play so many times I feel bad, but it's 3,000 miles away and maybe I should try it in Boston first. :-)

ANON, I’m so glad you sent this, thank you! Yesterday I started this little modern AU Valentine’s Day ficlet and wasn’t sure I’d finish it, and your ask inspired me to finish & post it :33

It’s not the galaxy far, far away version, but it does feature all three of those couples! Happy Valentine’s Dayyyy~~!

I call this: ALWAYS SOMEHOW REHEATING FISH, as it was inspired by the new Girls episode and me laughing at that quote re: meaty near-naked Kylo and his naked partner being awful to their roommate.

Finn smirks as he passes the long line at the flower stand in his building’s lobby. They ran out of red roses around lunchtime and are now selling the dregs to desperate people who didn’t plan as well as he has. He got an email confirmation that the custom bouquet he ordered for Rey arrived at her apartment two hours ago, and her creepy cousin actually responded to his text about placing it in her room. Whether or not Ben actually did so is still uncertain, as it’s hard to predict what he’ll do, regardless of what he says, but Finn has tried to come up with some reason why Ben might want to sabotage Rey’s Valentine’s Day flowers, and he hasn’t landed on anything yet. As obnoxious as Ben can be, he does seem to genuinely care about Rey. Finn would love it if this affection for Rey would translate into Ben maybe attempting to find his own place and letting Rey live her life without her codependent cousin haunting her steps, but he’s not going to hold his breath waiting for that to happen. Not yet, anyway: eventually he’s going to ask Rey to marry him. Maybe next year. At that point, Ben will hopefully take his cue to move out.

If Rey says yes, that is.

It’s a gray and rainy Tuesday, just a little after six o’clock in the evening. Finn thinks about texting Rey, though she likely won’t have time to look at her phone until her shift ends in five hours. She’s a waitress at Jakku, one of the trendiest restaurants in town, and today will be hell at work for her: the restaurant is fully booked, packed with couples who will expect her to cater to them and their special day while she juggles ten other tables who all demand the same level of doting attention in exchange for Jakku’s insane prices. Rey has been dreading Valentine’s Day all week for this reason, just like she dreaded it last year, when she and Finn were still only friends. Last year all he did was send her supportive messages when she griped about the work day she faced and then about how gruelling it was. He’d offered to bring her some ice cream at midnight, when she finally got home, but she’d said she just wanted to sleep.

This year they’re not just dating but getting pretty serious after seven giddy months. Rey has given him a key to her apartment, where he sleeps more often than not, though he has his own place and it’s pretty nice, definitely quieter. But Ben is not there, and if Ben wasn’t inventing nonstop excuses to need Rey’s “energy” nearby in order to stay sane, he wouldn’t be Ben.

Finn has a modest plan for this year, knowing that Rey will be exhausted when she finally gets home: he’ll surprise her by being there waiting in her room, which feels more and more like their room these days. He’ll have the flowers and a big plate of her favorite cookies, fresh-baked. It’s a recipe they’ve made together before, a kind of nascent tradition. He’s got all the ingredients in his car, except for eggs and milk, and when he was over at the apartment on Sunday there were plenty of both in the fridge. Once Rey gets home they’ll cuddle up together to get crumbs in the bed and watch a movie on her laptop. She’ll probably be too tired for sex, but Finn will offer to rub her back and shoulders, and maybe one thing will lead to another. Whatever happens, he wants to make her feel cozy and appreciated after a long day.

The first thing he notices upon approaching the apartment is that two trash bags are sitting in the hallway by the door. The super has specifically asked them not to do this, and Rey has been stressing about getting fined if Ben keeps ignoring this rule. Finn feels his temperature rising already as he sets down his grocery bag and takes the trash bags to the chute at the end of the hall. It’s really not so difficult, and especially shouldn’t be for someone who is home all day ‘pursuing his art,’ or whatever term Ben is using to describe his freeloading lately. Normally Finn would ask Ben to do it, with a varying degree of firmness that depends on Ben’s mood, but he doesn’t want to get into a thing with him tonight and cause drama that might linger until Rey gets home. Better to just take care of it so Rey doesn’t have to worry about this on a day when she’ll already be drained.

Trash disposed of and grocery bag in hand, he lets himself into the apartment and immediately winces. Despite the removal of the trash, the place stinks of fish and eggs and some other kind of food that he can’t place, something that doesn’t compliment either smell. Finn sighs when he walks in and sees the state of the kitchen: dirty mixing bowls all over the place, flour splattered on the counter and spilled on the floor, what looks like a fish carcass on a plate in the sink. In the middle of the clutter of dirty dishes piled on the kitchen island there’s an empty champagne bottle that stands there like a flag Ben has planted, claiming territory. Great.

Finn surveys the mess, wondering if it wouldn’t just be easier to go home to his place, make the cookies there, then bring them back here to surprise Rey. His apartment is on the other side of town and traffic was bad, some wreck on the highway backing everything in the city up. He puts his bag of ingredients down among the detritus, considering that some poor bastard was in a wreck on Valentine’s Day, and that having to clean up after Ben isn’t the worst thing he might spend this day doing. Just last year he’d been stewing in misery on Valentine’s Day, already in love with Rey and imagining they’d never end up together. Washing dishes in preparation for spending the evening with the woman he loves is no big deal. At least the apartment is quiet. Ben probably went out to get trashed with his friends in some kind of anti-Valentine’s Day protest. He’s weirdly bitter about being single, for someone who seems to have a lot of sex, based on the guys who come and go at all hours and his candid, uninvited commentary on his Grindr adventures.

Finn picks up a pan with what looks like omelet residue in it and curses under his breath. When he checks the fridge, his suspicions are confirmed: Ben has used all the eggs. The milk is gone, too, only the empty carton remaining on the counter, behind a pile of mixing bowls.

“Who even has this many mixing bowls?” Finn mutters, surveying all the ones that need to be washed as he weighs whether he should go down to the bodega for milk and eggs now or just get this mess cleaned up first so he won’t have to come back to the discouraging sight of it.

He rolls up his sleeves and turns on the water, trying to swallow his feelings of resentment. Rey is his dream girl, perfect for him in every way, except for the anchor around her neck that is Ben, and Finn wouldn’t mind so much if he could envision an exit strategy for Ben easing out of her life at least somewhat. As he stands washing Ben’s dishes, nightmarish scenarios where Ben is still living with him and Rey after they’re married with kids begin to enter his mind, and he’s picturing himself washing sixty-year-old Ben’s breakfast dishes when he hears Ben’s bedroom door open down the hall.

So Ben is here after all, just having a rare quiet evening. Good: Ben can help him clean up this mess, or at least run to the bodega for more milk and eggs.

Finn turns from the sink and sees not Ben but a naked man with red hair who seems equally startled to see him, freezing in his tracks just before entering the kitchen.

“What the fuck!” Finn says, at the same time as the man, who smacks both his pasty hands over his crotch.

“Who are you?” the man asks, scowling. He has a British accent.

“I’m– What do you mean, who am I? I live here! Sort of. Are you with Ben?”

“Who’s Ben?”

Finn feels a chill racing down the back of his neck. There’s a nude lunatic in Rey’s apartment, and apparently Ben didn’t let him in.

“Hux!”

But that’s Ben, and he’s racing out toward the naked man as if he does know him. Ben is at least wearing underwear, though they’re tight enough to leave little to the imagination. He sort of stumbles to a halt, bracing himself on Hux’s shoulders. Hux allows himself to be jostled, hands still over his crotch.

“Who is this man?” Hux asks, turning his scowl on Ben. “I thought you lived with your cousin.”

“I do– This is her boyfriend. What the hell are you doing?” Ben asks, as if he’s so unfamiliar with the practice of washing dishes that he doesn’t recognize it when he sees it.

“I’m surprising Rey for Valentine’s Day,” Finn says. “Trying to, anyway. What did you do in here, cook a twelve course meal?”

“We worked up an appetite,” Ben says, stepping in front of Hux in some kind of belated, gentlemanly gesture. Finn returns his eyes to the dishes, scrubbing with renewed vigor and increasing annoyance.

“Kylo, just get me a fucking glass of water,” Hux says, and he stomps back toward the bedroom. “You people are all too old for roommates,” he calls before slamming Ben’s door.

“Who is that prick?” Finn asks when Ben stands there scratching at his stomach. “And why is he calling you Kyle?”

“Kylo.” Ben goes for the cabinet near the sink, glowering when he sees that there are no clean glasses. “It’s my pen name.”

Finn opens his mouth to ask what Ben is penning these days, then decides he doesn’t want to know. “Help me with this, whatever your name is,” he says. “I’m trying to make something for Rey, for when she gets off work. You guys totally wrecked the place. Who makes fish in the middle of the day?”

“Hux has a refined palate,” Ben says, lowering his voice. He moves over to the next cabinet, grabs a coffee mug and shoulders Finn out of the way to fill it with water. “Fuck,” he says. “He probably only drinks filtered.”

“Who is he? Some guy you picked up?”

“Obviously. He’s incredible. Best sex of my life. We’ve been–”

“I don’t care what you’ve been doing! You used the last of the eggs, man, and all the milk. I need you to go to the store and get more, please.”

“Not likely.” Ben drinks from the mug of water and makes a face. “Does this water always taste so shitty? Hey, if you go to the store, get some bottled water, all right? I’ll owe you one. Fiji, or one of those other fancy kinds. Not Deer Park or Crystal Geyser. Or Dasani.”

“Why don’t you get your own bottled water, and my eggs and milk in the meantime?”

“I’m naked.”

“You could get dressed!”

“Also it’s raining, and this is, like– This is special,” he says, whispering. “I can’t mess this up.”

“What, your hookup with some snob who thinks people in their mid-twenties can’t have roommates? What the hell world does he come from?”

“England. Wealth. Power.”

“Gross.”

“I know,” Ben says, and he smiles dreamily. “He’s all uptight. And then, in the bedroom, he’s like an animal, fuck, he was so ready for it, overdue–”

“Stop!” Finn turns the faucet on Ben, who stands there and lets himself be soaked, unimpressed. “I don’t want to hear about your sex life, just do me a favor and go to the store while I clean up your mess.”

“You don’t have to clean my mess.”

“I do if I want to cook for Rey. I can’t work around this disaster.”

“Sorry man,” Ben says, slapping Finn on the shoulder. “I can’t walk away from what’s going on in my bedroom right now. This is once in a lifetime shit. I have to play my cards right.”

“Hey– No! Fine, I’ll go to the store, but you have to clean up this crap while I’m gone.”

“I don’t have to do anything,” Ben says, darkening. “This isn’t even your place. It’s mine.”

“It’s Rey’s, and since she’s busting her ass working on Valentine’s Day, maybe you could be nice enough not to let her come home to a trashed sex den that she’s paying for and you’re residing in?”

“I contribute. You don’t know about our financial data.”

“I have a vague idea.” Finn smacks off the water and reels himself in while he dries his hands on a dish towel. Pointing out that Ben’s contributions to the rent are minimal compared to Rey’s is not the way to get what he wants right now. “Look,” he says, holding up his hands. “I love Rey, you love Rey. Let’s both do something nice for Rey. I’ll even get bottled water for your guy while I’m at the store, okay? Let him sleep it off for ten minutes while you clean up in here. No big deal, right?”

“Don’t talk to me like I’m a child,” Ben says. His eyes are narrowed, but the fact that he hasn’t stormed off yet is a good sign. “I’ll clean this shit up. Fine. For Rey. And remember, Fiji water. Or something of Fiji caliber.”

“Great,” Finn says, wanting to punch the snotty look off Ben’s face. Unfortunately, Ben is enormous and most of the money he does bring in comes not from his flighty stabs at art but from cage fighting, something he is disturbingly good at. “I’ll be right back,” Finn says, already dashing for the door.

The rain is still coming down, soaking the mostly empty sidewalk as Finn hurries toward the bodega on the corner, his jacket pulled over his head. He has an umbrella, but it’s in his car, which is parked in the garage of Rey’s building, and fetching it would take longer than dashing to the bodega without it. He can deal with some rain for a block and a half. Or, he normally can: right now it’s making him grit his teeth as it seeps into his shoes and makes his socks damp while he thinks about Ben up there in his underwear, refusing to replace what he’s consumed. Typical. Don’t talk to me like I’m a child, ha. Then don’t act like one, asshole! Finn pushes his low-boiling rage aside and jogs the rest of the way to the store, telling himself that at least Ben is doing dishes now, as he should be.

The usual clerk is behind the counter. His name is Matt and he’s been working here for as long as Finn has been hanging out at Rey’s apartment. He’s a big fan of Ben’s and in awe of Ben’s reputation as a cage fighter, which is apparently noteworthy in certain circles. Matt and Ben train at the same gym; Rey thinks Matt is in love with Ben, but Ben insists that Matt just appreciates his fighting style, which is a combination of eerie grace and beserker mania. Finn nods to Matt as he approaches the counter with his hastily collected milk, eggs and two-liter bottle of Fiji. He gets the usual blank-faced stare from behind Matt’s unfashionable glasses. Matt only ever lights up if Ben comes here with them.

“You okay?” Finn asks when he notices that Matt’s face is very red.

“Yeah.” Matt keeps his eyes on Finn as he drags his purchases mindlessly across the scanner. “Why.”

“Nothing, just. You look kinda feverish or something.”

“My lover got caught in the storm.”

Finn cocks his head. “Sorry?” That sounds like a euphemism.

“My lover. He’s on his way here. Because I’m stuck at fucking work, in this shit hole, on Valentine’s Day. But he’s afraid of thunder. I’m managing my fury by breathing deeply.”

“You–”

The bell on the door jangles violently, and the man who runs inside seems to bring the rain with him, arriving like a kind of human splash. His approach is so swift and panicked that Finn braces himself to confront an attempted robbery. Then he notices that this man is behaving more like he’s fleeing robbers than aiming to act as one, dashing toward Matt and flinging himself behind the counter as if seeking shelter. He’s tall but willowy, his clothes and lank red hair plastered to his body. He throws himself into Matt’s arms, where he is received with a satisfied grunt from Matt, who lifts him nearly off the floor in a crushing hug. So this is the lover Matt was anticipating. Finn averts his eyes when they start making out with audible moaning relief, acting like the red-haired man just came home from war.

“Uh,” Finn says, after this has gone on for longer than he’s willing to abide. “Can I pay?”

Matt goes on mouthing at the other man’s neck. Finn begins to worry that he’s going to throw his boyfriend onto the counter and have him right here, breaking the eggs in the process. This was the last carton on the shelf. The boyfriend at least seems to notice Finn’s irritation, squirming and poking at Matt until he does, too.

“Sorry,” Matt says. His glasses are crooked. “I was just. I was worried about him.”

“I’m fine,” the boyfriend says, in a near whisper. He’s still pressed to Matt’s chest, his skinny shoulders lifting when Finn holds out a twenty.

“Valentine’s Day should be a national holiday,” Matt says. He sounds and looks angry, as if Finn is the one keeping this from being so. “Anyway. This is Techie. Today’s our one-year anniversary.”

“Congratulations,” Finn says. “Can you take my money, please?”

“Are you making a cake?” Techie asks, surveying Finn’s purchases.

“Cookies,” Finn says, tightly.

“For someone special?”

“Yeah, actually.”

“The hell kind of cookies do you make with milk and eggs and overpriced water?” Matt asks.

“These are– There’s other stuff, back at my place.” Finn holds his hand out. Matt gives him a look while surrendering his change. “I know your pain, okay?” Finn says. “My girlfriend won’t finish her shift until midnight.”

“That’s rough, buddy,” Matt says. Finn can’t tell if he’s being sincere or not. “You want a bag?”

Finn does. He stands there, dripping and cold and harnessing all the patience he can as Techie elects to lend a hand, bagging Finn’s three items with weirdly deliberate care and beaming at Matt between each one, as if looking for approval. Matt rubs Techie’s back and stares at him in a way that is itself pretty lewd. They’re making out again before Finn has reached the door.

The rain is relentless, and Finn wants to run for it, but he’s afraid he’ll slip and break the eggs, especially considering he’s still wearing his shoes from work, which are the nicest ones he owns but not known for their great traction on slippery surfaces. He hurries along as fast as he can without risking a fall, glad that he keeps some spare clothes at Rey’s place. That interlude in the bodega took longer than it needed to, but hopefully this means Ben is finished or at least almost finished cleaning the kitchen. Finn can throw on some dry clothes and get started on the cookies. He smiles to himself when he reaches the apartment’s street entrance, thinking of how Rey will be charmed by his story about Matt’s delicate boyfriend. Just the thought of her curling up with delighted laughter as he relates this anecdote in bed gets him up the three flights to her place in a pretty good mood.

He reaches the door and realizes he didn’t think to lock it behind him when he left, too preoccupied with his mission or annoyed with Ben. He tries the handle, not surprised to see that Ben hasn’t bothered locking it since. He considers himself a walking security system, of course. Finn strides inside, reminding himself not to lose his cool if Ben has taken his sweet time with the cleaning.

Only when he sees what’s actually going on inside the apartment does he realize what a naive, best-case-scenario fantasy the idea of Ben taking a long time to clean the kitchen was. Instead, there is some manner of shameless sex going on right there on the living room couch, in full view of the front door, limbs and balls still in fervent motion when Finn whirls away from this scene in an indignant panic, slamming his bag against the doorframe in the process. He can just hear the eggs breaking over the sound of Ben grunting and Hux cursing him for not noticing that they have company.

“Are you deaf?” Hux shouts. “Stop thrusting, the boyfriend is back!”

“Wah? Oh– Fuck, Finn, sorry, hey–”

Finn is torn between wanting to run and wanting to throw his shoe at Ben. It’s not the first time he’s seen Ben’s balls from this vantage point, but usually Rey is beside him to shout oi! and share in his exasperation. And the fucking eggs. He slams the apartment’s door shut and steps out into the hallway to check the carton. The eggs met the doorframe hard, taking the brunt of the impact and then getting crushed with the heavy milk and water bottles. Every one of them is broken.

He’s still standing in the hallway in a kind of defeated, shivering stupor when Ben emerges wearing sweatpants. The waistband on them is worn out, and they hang low enough to be obscene, but Finn can’t work up his usual indignation about Ben’s lack of modesty. Not after what he just saw. Usually when he and Rey walk in on something the lights are off, at least.

“What the fuck, man,” Finn says, lifting his dripping bag. “My eggs.”

“Your eggs?” Ben hikes up the pants and frowns.

“You have a room. With a functioning door. Why, just– Why?”

“Sorry, shit, I didn’t mean to– I started to do those dishes, and he came out to see what was taking me so long, and he’s, he’s insatiable, Finn, it’s fucking amazing. We ended up on the couch–”

“You started to do the dishes. Started. How far did you get?”

“I guess I washed, like, a spoon.”

“Okay. Right.”

“I wanted to do it, don’t give me that look. It was him, he has no patience! He came out sniffing for more dick like a–”

“Do not finish that metaphor. Please. Just– Get out of my way, all right? I’m going to hide in Rey’s room until she gets home.” So much for making her a treat; Finn gives up. He’ll text her about ordering a pizza, since she might not get a chance to even stuff down a snack during her shift. At least he has the flowers, an arrangement that cost almost two hundred bucks and looked really beautiful in the preview image, unique and luscious. “Here,” Finn says, thrusting the bag at Ben. “Your Fiji. Enjoy the milk, too, what do I care. Is he– Can I walk in there, or is he going to be splayed and waiting for you?”

“You’re good, he ran back into my room.” Ben peers down into the bag. “Oh, shit. Your eggs.”

“Yeah.”

Finn pushes into the apartment, still bracing himself to see Hux’s ass or dick or worse, but it’s true that he’s fled, and Ben’s bedroom door is mercifully closed at the end of the hall. Walking into Rey’s room is an instant relief: lately it smells not just like Rey but like home, moreso even than Finn’s own place and despite all the Ben-related annoyances that come with spending so much time here. He’s digging out his phone to ask Rey her thoughts on ordering pizza when he notices the flowers he ordered for her, sitting on top of her dresser and looking conspicuously diminished.

“Oh, you’ve got to be kidding me!”

He hurries over to the flowers, trying not to lose it just yet, but there’s no mistaking it: the bouquet he carefully designed on an interactive website, checking for flower meanings in another tab every time he added a new variety, only retains a measly quarter of what he paid for, and what remains is mostly filler in neutral colors. The vibrant peonies and hybrid tea roses are gone. There’s no enormous sunflower, no coral orchids spilling down the sides of the vase. Even the little yellow peanut flowers that he had to special order, to represent their nickname for each other, are missing.

No, not missing: this flower delivery service is top-class, with page after page of flawless customer reviews. He did thorough research.

Stolen. That’s what happened here. Fucking bald-faced thievery.

“You know, I knew you were low!” Finn says when he’s standing outside Ben’s bedroom door, pounding on it with his fist and hesitating to barge inside only to spare himself another eyeful of Ben fucking his random nympho ginger. “But this– Even after all the bullshit you’ve pulled, all the stories Rey has told me, I never thought you’d mess with her fucking Valentine’s Day flowers!”

Ben opens the door and sticks his head out, and if Finn wasn’t ready to kill him he might think Ben actually looks a little remorseful.

Then Ben says: “What stories Rey told you?”

“You’re a monster!” Finn shouts.

“Okay– Okay, I’m sorry, I know, all right.” Ben ducks down to pick something up off the floor and slips out into the hall, leaving the door cracked open as he holds a crumpled black t-shirt over his dick. “Sorry, that was– That was bad, I know, we got kind of drunk earlier, and I thought I could make Hux a flower crown and then just put all the flowers back, you know, I didn’t think they’d get kind of, like, wrecked, by what happened after he was wearing the–”

“Flower crown? Fucking– flower crown, what– What is wrong with you?”

“I thought it was stupid, too!” Hux calls from within the room. “For the record!”

“Fuck you!” Ben shouts, whirling around to poke his head back into his room. “You liked it, I have pictures!”

“I can’t handle this,” Finn says, feeling the words take on a kind of damning weight in his chest, because maybe he means more than this day, this one ruined evening. Rey is worth it, of course she is, but he also feels like he’s going to lose his mind.

Ben opens his mouth to respond, probably to make things worse, but before he can they both hear someone fling the apartment’s door open.

“Rey?” Ben calls, and Finn thinks it can’t be her, she’s going to be at Jakku for at least another four hours, but when they both hurry into the living room they find her at the door, wearing her rain slicker and sniffling, her eyes puffy and red.

“Finn!” she says, with surprise and also with such pure, voice-cracking and instant relief that he feels like he could spend an eternity sharing a cardboard box with three Bens, as long as Rey was there, too.

“Peanut,” Finn says, not caring now if Ben holds hearing this over them at a later time. He rushes across the room as she hurries toward him, and when she crumples into his arms and releases a kind of full-body sob he silently vows to kill whoever hurt her, but only after he holds her like this for as long as she’ll let him. She smells like rain and like the grubby reality of even the finest restaurant kitchen, where things have been frying and butter hangs thick in the air.

“I quit,” she says, holding on tight, her chin on Finn’s shoulder. Only then does he remember that he’s still very damp himself. “I threw my apron in Unkar’s face.”

“Yes!” Ben says. “Finally! Fuck that guy.”

Finn can’t help agree with this, based on all the horror stories Rey has told him about Jakku’s owner-manager, though he understands why she’s upset, too.

“I feel terrible,” she says when Finn pulls back to sweep his thumbs over her cheeks, not sure if he’s brushing away tears or rainwater. “I left– I left in the middle of Valentine’s Day! Poe and Jessika will have to pick up my slack, they’ll hate me–”

“They won’t,” Finn promises, and he kisses her nose. “I’m proud of you, it’s okay, don’t worry. If you walked out, Unkar must have really screwed up.”

“He’s screwed up plenty of times before,” Ben says, before Rey can even begin to describe what put her over the edge. He comes forward and touches Rey’s shoulder, trying to insinuate himself into the hug. “You deserve better,” Ben says. “And now you can be serious about cooking school.”

“With what money?” Rey asks. “Unkar says I’m on the server blacklist now, that no one will hire someone who couldn’t cut it in his kitchen–”

“What bullshit!”

That’s Hux, peering at them from the hallway and wrapped in Ben’s checked flannel bedsheet.

“I work in the industry,” Hux says, straightening his posture with snobbish authority. “I know Unkar, and he’s infamously difficult. I’ve worked with every restaurant developer in this town who means anything, if you need a real recommendation. I designed Starkiller.”

“What’s Starkiller?” Finn asks, wanting him to get lost.

“A really big restaurant.” Rey sniffles again and presses her hair down. It’s wild and damp, pulling out of her bun. “Uh. Who is that?” she asks Ben, pointing to Hux.

“The love of my life,” Ben says.

“Oh, fuck off!” Hux says, but he’s grinning.

“We’ll figure it out,” Finn says, speaking softly and attempting to ignore the other two. “You must be– Are you hungry? Do you want a drink, want me to run out and get ice cream? Anything you want–”

“I just want to get in bed,” Rey says. “With you,” she adds more quietly, and she leans up to kiss Finn on the lips. It’s sweet, chaste, but sends a thrill all the way down to his heels, maybe because of the way she swooned into it. “I’m so glad you’re here,” she says, smiling a little, her lips still pressed to his. “How did you know I’d need you this much?”

“I don’t know, just. It’s Valentine’s Day. I just wanted you to know how much I–”

“Look, if you really need the money,” Ben says, interrupting this moment, because of course he is, “I could ask my mother to, uh. To help us with the rent for a while.”

“You haven’t spoken to Leia in years!” Rey says, peering at Ben from over Finn’s shoulder.

“Right, but I could. To help you realize your dreams. Because you’ve helped me realize mine.”

Ben turns to look at Hux, who makes a face like Ben has just thrown a live octopus at him.

“We’ll be in my room,” Rey says, grabbing Finn’s hand. “Don’t disturb unless you want an ass kicking.”

After they’ve both changed into clean, dry clothes, and then almost instantly shed those clothes in the process of having quiet but intense sex that rolls over both of them like an unplanned-for summer storm, Finn tells Rey about his disaster of a day, including the bit about Matt and his thunder-averse boyfriend, which makes Rey laugh even harder than he’d dreamed it would. She tells him about her day, and he’s all sympathy and cuddling when it turns out hers well outpaces his for horribleness. The telling of it seems to unburden her, and she reaches over Finn’s shoulder to grab one of the remaining flowers from the sadly deconstructed bouquet, tucking it behind his ear.

“Well, it’s something to tell the grandchildren,” she says, stroking the back of one finger along the line of Finn’s jaw. “Our first Valentine’s Day together.”

Finn kisses her and tries not to interpret that as a lowkey marriage proposal. Maybe she was just joking around, being lighthearted. But something about the way she said grandchildren makes him highkey wonder if she’s been thinking about their future pretty seriously, too.

Feeling pretty sure that she has been really helps around three in the morning, when Finn is half-awake and sharing a pair of headphones with Rey as they blearily watch another old X-Files episode on her laptop in an attempt to drown out the sounds that are again coming from the bedroom across the hall. Attempting to frame this in the most generous way possible, mostly out of sheer exhaustion, Finn hopes that Ben really has found the love of his life, and that the trajectory of this love will take Ben far, far away from here.

We’re half way through the Artfully Wild Blog Along. This is day 15. You can find out more here.

Checking in with you here at the half way mark of what has become an semi-annual thing – I spend a month twice a year blogging every day. Some years I make it, some years I don’t, but I always value the fruits of the attempt.

It’s been a bit hard to wrangle my time properly with all that’s going on. Some things are slipping off the radar – like the poeming, like the housework, like the self-care – because these posts do take quite a while to compose, and I tend not to write ‘lightly’ most of the time. I’m a digger. I like to excavate. It’s my jam.

That being said, today *requires* quick and light. I spent the last four days procrastinating on a bunch of stuff that’s very ‘eat the frog’ gnarly. Writing I have to do for a thing (it’s an interview. Believe it or not, I hate writing about myself. I find it irksome, but it’s good exposure, so I say yes to these things. Otherwise how is anybody new ever going to find me?), two bedside tables to put together, a kitchen that needs a deep clean, some laundry. I have to film a thing for a thing, too, rather urgently, actually, and in the midst of all that, I have a dinner guest tonight (my kid, but still – a dinner guest means I have to actually *gasp* make dinner instead of just grabbing a hunk of cheese to gnaw on when my blood sugar starts to tank) and I’m five or six poems behind, too.

In the interest of self-care, though, I’m going to start my day with a long shower, which feels a little bit indulgent given the size of this list. If I *don’t* start with a shower, though, the shower will have to wait until tomorrow, and that is what we call ‘putting ourselves last’ and that will not do.

I did art for me throughout the weekend (instead of tackling the whole eating the frog thing), so we’re going to call that a win, even if it did put me way behind on other things.

I wish I could tell you that all is peaceful with me, but I’m pretty stormy, and feeling all kinds of feels that I can’t even get into. I’m definitely *okay*. Fine, even. Just working through some uncomfortable things that I wish I could just slay like I slay my list every day. Some things need integrating, though, not slaying, so I’m doing the work as best I know how, gently, steadfastly, with my eye on the prize, which I’m hoping is some kind of sense of solid ground.

But first, a shower, because that will invigorate and motivate me, and there’s nothing like squeaky clean hair and a freshly scrubbed body to set the tone for the day.

Final pictures of Nipsey Hussle the day before he was gunned down

The day before he was murdered in cold blood outside his clothing store, rapper Nipsey Hussle was seen smiling, posing and greeting people at a March Madness basketball game.

The 33-year-old attended the West Regional NCAA March Madness basketball elite 8 game between Texas Tech and Gonzaga in Anaheim, California, on Saturday. The next day, he was executed outside his clothing store.

Hussle, a former gangster turned rapper and entrepreneur, was due to sit down with the LAPD in the coming weeks to discuss gang violence and how to prevent it.

No one has been arrested for his death and fans have gone into a frenzy speculating over the reason behind it.

The 33-year-old rapper was in high spirits at the game on Saturday between Texas Tech and Gonzaga

Some believe he was killed because he had been buying up property in south Los Angeles an effort to legitimize himself and the area.

Last year, he opened a co-working space and STEM center aimed at bridging the gap between urban communities and Silicon Valley.

Others believe his death is linked to a documentary he was working on about a herbalist who claimed to have cured AIDS.

The LAPD has not yet suggested a motive for his killing but a source close to the investigation told The Los Angeles Times they believe his killer belonged to a gang.

Nipsey was shot multiple times and was pronounced dead after being rushed to hospital. The two other men were in stable conditions. Eyewitnesses saw a man fleeing in a vehicle after the shooting.

Moments before the gunfire, he had tweeted: ‘Having strong enemies is a blessing.’

Hussle was seen socializing at the event with other spectators and smiling for cameras

The rapper, who was also on a mission to eradicate gang violence from the neighborhood where he grew up, was shot multiple times on Sunday. Police are yet to find his killer

Nipsey grew up in south Los Angeles and often talked about being in the Rollin 60s Neighborhood Crips gang in his teenage years.

‘We dealt with death, with murder. It was like living in a war zone, where people die on these blocks and everybody is a little bit immune to it,’ he told the LA Times in an interview last year.

He had since become a community organizer in South LA.

He was involved in the Destination Crenshaw arts project and opened a co-working space called Vector 90 in Crenshaw so young people could take classes in science, technology and math.

In recent years, he had been buying up real estate in the neighborhood to try become a legitimate real estate mogul.

He and his business partner had plans to turn the plot where his clothing store was into a residential building and last year, he opened a co-working space and STEM center.

He was eager to increase awareness and interest in the technology and science industries in south L.A., with some residents crediting him for ‘teaching us how to invest’.

Michel Moore, LAPD chief of police who was due to meet Nipsey today, said there had been 10 murders over the last week.

He wrote on Twitter last night: ‘Tonight’s homicide in South LA represents the latest loss in a troubling surge in violence.

‘Since last Sunday 26 victims have been shot & 10 homicides—that’s 36 families left picking up the pieces. We will work aggressively with our community to quell this senseless loss of life.’

The rapper and his girlfriend of five years, Lauren London, had just quizzed each other about favorite colors and celebrity crushes in a GQ interview on Thursday.

Long part of the underground rap circuit, Hussle struggled to find fame but began selling his own mixtapes, which hip-hop royalty Jay-Z once bought 100 of for $100 each.

He was Grammy-nominated for Best Rap Album for ‘Victory Lap,’ his first formal album that finally dropped in February 2018 after six years of teasing, but lost out to rap’s woman of the moment Cardi B.

The heavily-tattooed hip-hop star was next scheduled to perform at the Kings of the West concert on September 14 at the SAP Center in San Jose.

Tributes have been flowing in following news of his death from big names in the music industry, including Rihanna, Drake, and Snoop Dogg.

Mayor Eric Garcetti also tweeted Sunday: ‘Our hearts are with the loved ones of Nipsey Hussle.’

Nipsey’s tour mate Snoop Dogg shared several social media tributes in the hours after the shooting.

‘It’s f***ed up, man,’ he said in an Instagram video.

‘I just want to send prayers out to Nipsey Hussle’s family and Lauren London and her family. It’s f***ed up, man. This is f***ed up. Prayers out to the whole family, man. This s*** got to stop, man.

Nine-time Grammy winner Rihanna also tweeted a tribute to Hussle.

‘This doesn’t make any sense!’ she wrote.

‘My spirit is shaken by this! Dear God may His spirit Rest In Peace and May You grant divine comfort to all his loved ones! I’m so sorry this happened to you @nipseyhussle.’

Four-time Grammy winner Drake said his ‘whole energy is just at a low right now hearing this.’

‘We just linked for the first time in years and said we were gonna do a new song this summer cause it had been too long,’ he wrote.

Ramblings: Ovechkin Clicking at Career-Rate, Rantanen On Another Planet, Meier, & Johnsson (Dec 12)

William Nylander hit the scoresheet for the first time this season. The 22-year-old led the way for the Leafs with two even-strength assists as they beat the Hurricanes 4-1 on Tuesday evening. Nylander continued to skate alongside Nazem Kadri and Patrick Marleau on the team's third line. He's also working the half-wall on the team's second power-play unit.

It isn't exactly the ideal spot to push his metrics to the next level, but it should be enough for him to play at a 60-point pace – about where I'd peg his floor to be.

Freddie Andersen continues to roll on. The 29-year-old has been the best fantasy netminder in all setups. His win tonight pushes his record to 17-8-0 with a 0.928 save percentage. He's posted a quality start rate of 72 percent. That's a puck-stopper you can rely on.

Andreas Johnsson scored a goal on Tuesday night but it was quickly changed to give credit to Morgan Rielly. Despite the pointless night, Johnsson has been playing well of late. He was a sleeper pick by many last offseason to break out in Toronto this year. He started his season by watching up in the press box as a healthy scratch. When he did get into the lineup, it was in a depth role.

Well, Willy Nylander is back in Leaf-land and things are moving and shaking. Johnsson has been lining up on the left side of Auston Matthews at even strength the past few games. He's also seeing his fair share of second power-play unit duties.

The 24-year-old has made the most of his upgrade in deployment. He came into the game against Carolina with two consecutive games with a goal and an assist. He’s owned in just 16 percent of Yahoo leagues but that number is climbing.

Patty Marleau doesn’t look like a true fit beside Matthews, and Johnsson’s speed, skill and tenacious-style fits well to pursue the puck and cause turnovers for the big pivot to operate with. I love this type of streamer. A young player with upside who is in a good spot. He won’t see PP1 time, so the results will be held back to some degree. But he could become a staple on that line with a few more strong performances.

Buy-in if you can.

It was reported that Ryan Miller will miss six weeks with a sprained MCL. The Ducks wasted no time in claiming Chad Johnson off of waivers from St Louis to provide some support to John Gibson.

Jordan Binnington is the new back-up in STL. The 25-year-old has a single NHL game on his resume. He managed to wrestle the starting gig in the American league from Ville Huuso who has been projected as the up and comer for a few seasons.

With the way the Blues are playing these days, it is conceivable that Binnington sees some ice, but the results will likely be very muted.

It was Jake Allen who got the start and the win against the Panthers on Tuesday. St Louis needed this one. After getting shelled on home ice by Vancouver on Sunday, the media was all over the practice tilt involving Bortuzzo and Sanford. Perhaps that was the gelling moment for a squad that should be much better than they've been.

David Perron (2+0), Brayden Schenn (1+1) and Jaden Schwartz (0+2) led the way for the Blues.

Speaking of bad teams, the Blackhawks dropped their eighth consecutive contest on Tuesday. They fell 6-3 the Jets on the road.

Winnipeg was led by Kyle Connor and his two tallies. Dustin Byfuglien chipped in with three assists. He seems to be back to his old ways after that terribly managed concussion.

More injuries in Anaheim? You don't say. This time it's the team’s top left-wing, Rickard Rakell who continues to be out with a sprained ankle. There is no timeline for his return at this point.

That’s another gaping hole on a team that has been decimated with injuries this season. It was Pontus Aberg who rolled next to Getzlaf and Ondrej Kase on the team’s ‘top line’ during the last game. Aberg and Sprong both took turns on the team’s top power play unit.

No one is replacing Rackell in the short term, but Sprong or Aberg could provide some streaming options if they are getting exposure to Getzlaf in all situations.

Boston and Arizona squared off in a cross-conference battle that drew…very little attention. While it didn't have the heat of a divisional matchup, this was a good game. The Coyotes jumped out to a 2-0 lead after Nick Schmaltz and Nick Cousins potted first-period tallies. Schmaltz has seven points in the seven games since landing in the desert. Here's hoping you bought in when we told you to.

The Bruins stormed back to score four unanswered goals. Brad Marchand popped two. David Pastrnak chipped in with a goal and two helpers. The Bruins haven't been their dominant self with Patrice Bergeron on the shelf. But they're finding their way.

Of note, Ryan Donato skated on the team's second line and top power-play unit. He saw 3:35 of PPTOI and recorded an assist and two shots on goal. That's the type of deployment you want to see the young sharp-shooter receive to start considering him an asset for this season.

The NHL has its first 50-point scorer in 2018-19. Mikko Rantanen buried his 13th and 14th goals of the season and added two assists on Tuesday in a 6-4 loss to the Oilers. That extended his point streak to 12 games and 23 points. This dude is on another planet.

He has a six-point lead atop the Art Ross race.

Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl combined for five points in the victory. Drai was chucking some backhand sauce out there.

The big German has quietly slid into the top-15 point producers with 37 points in 31 contests. He and McDavid belong together. I don't ever want to see those two split up again.

Mikko Koskinen was good once again. Ken Hitchcock appears to have cleaned the squad up defensively, and it's Koskinen who is thriving the most. He sporting a 0.928 save percentage in 15 games played. He has two regulation losses in his last 11 games and has posted a quality start rate of 60 percent.

The crease is his.

The LA Kings are dreadful. Leading the Sabres 3-1 heading into the third period they managed to blow things. Jeff Skinner ended up potting the overtime winner, his 21st of the season. His captain and linemate, Jack Eichel contributed a goal and an assist. It was his fifth multi-point outing in the last six games.

Eichel now sits tied for ninth in NHL scoring with 38 points in 31 contests. The 22-year-old has officially arrived. And so have the Sabres. Buffalo is solidly in the playoffs and third in their division. Just three points behind the Leafs for second. It's been a long road in upstate New York, it's good to finally see some success.

Rasmus Dahlin was held off the scoresheet in this one. But the 18-year-old played 28:34, had eight shots and three blocks. He played 10:04 on the man-advantage!

Fret not keeper league owners, his counting stats may not jump off the page just yet, but he's out there doing things like this before he even has to shave. Imagine what he'll do in a year or three.

Nick Backstrom and Alex Ovechkin teamed up to lay a beatdown on the Red Wings on Tuesday. Ovi proceeded to score three goals to push his league-leading total to 25 in 30 games. The 33-year-old has never had that many tallies through 30 games in any of his previous 13 seasons.

Let that sink in for a moment. He's 33 years old and on pace for his highest output yet. The man is pacing for 68 goals!

What a legend.

Ovechkin is currently riding an 11-game point streak where he's scored 13 goals and 19 points.

Meanwhile, Backstrom continues to be the most underappreciated fantasy star ever. Left for dead by many after a 'disappointing' 71-point campaign a year ago and looking like his days of dishing to Ovi at even-strength were over. Well, turns out he's far from dead. The 31-year-old has 38 points in 30 games to be living in the top-10 league-wide.

I keep trying to trade for him in my main league and you should too.

Gus Nyqvist potted a goal and an assist. The 29-year-old has produced nine points in the six games since Anthony Mantha went down with a hand injury. Nyqvist is having his best start to date with 28 points in 32 games. A quiet but effective producer who is seeing high-end deployment.

That's a good combination.

The requisite Elias Pettersson tidbit.

Since we're talking about Pettersson (when am I not?), the 20-year-old rookie posted a goal and an assist in Tuesday's 3-2 win over Columbus. His 32 points in 27 games vaults into the top-30 for skaters league-wide. His 1.19 points-per-game represent the 18th best mark.

As amazing as that is, the thing that really stands out is that 1.19 points-per-game is only good for 18th in the league! We are living in a high-scoring and enjoyable time. Perhaps the 22 skaters that played at or above a point-per-game last year wasn't an aberration after all. The goalie pads are slimmer, and the red lights are warmer.

Good times.

The Wild laid the boots to Canadiens 7-1 on home ice on Tuesday. Matt Dumba scored two goals, while Zach Parise added a goal and two helpers.

Dumba has been good again this season. The 24-year-old has 12 goals and 21 points in 30 games this year. His 12 markers lead all blueliners and he's on pace for another career year. That would be five seasons in a row where the former WHL stud improved on his goal and point total.

Jeff Petry may not be working the top power-play unit in Montreal now that Shea Weber is healthy, but that hasn't slowed him down yet. The veteran defender has five points in the five games since Weber rejoined the team.

His five-on-five shooting percentage is a bit high, but the rest of his metrics remain solid. Better not drop him yet.

Let's talk about Timo Meier for a moment. The 22-year-old is tied for 10th in the NHL with 26 even-strength points. His 3.6 P/60 is 17th most – tied with Crosby, Wheeler, Eichel, Pasta, and Malkin.

He's putting 3.31 shots on goal per night and is on pace for 44 goals and 82 points in 79 games.

People need to be waking up on this kid. He’s a play-driver and he’s driving the bus in San Jose as a third-year player. We keep waiting for his numbers to slag, but there have been no signs of slowing down yet.
