Downhill Into You

Nash Hawthorne x Libby Grambs

Warnings: Fluff, light physical comedy (minor falls), mutual pining, excessive Hawthorne sibling chaos, slow-burn romance, secondhand embarrassment via Max and Jameson. No major triggers.

Synopsis:While on a winter trip to True North Lodge, Libby lets Nash teach her how to ski. She’s clumsy, he’s charming, and when she falls—straight into him—it sparks more than just laughter. With the Hawthornes causing mayhem in the background, Libby and Nash find themselves inching closer… one awkward wipeout at a time.

Word Count: 1,165

The snow at True North Lodge was the kind that sparkled like magic—soft, powdery, fresh. Libby had admired it from the giant lodge windows for the last two days while wrapped in a blanket beside Max, sipping hot cocoa and watching the Hawthorne brothers risk their lives on skis.

Xander had built a ramp out of snow and was trying to launch himself over a tree stump. Grayson was gliding down steep terrain like a man in a cologne commercial. Jameson? He kept throwing himself off the steepest paths and yelling “I’m one with the mountain!” as Avery shouted after him to please not die today.

So yeah, skiing had seemed like a spectator sport.

But now here she was: on the slope, skis strapped to her boots, staring down a hill that was technically for beginners but looked steep enough to qualify as a death wish.

“I’m gonna die,” she said, tightening her scarf.

“You ain’t gonna die,” Nash replied, amusement curling in his voice. “This hill’s for kids.”

“Exactly. Kids have flexible bones.”

Nash laughed—really laughed, the sound curling warm through the cold. He was so easygoing it was almost infuriating.

Nash, in a gray thermal and navy ski jacket, looked like the embodiment of winter comfort. He wasn’t wearing his cowboy hat—too windy, he claimed—but somehow, even with ski goggles pushed up on his head, beanie low on his brow, his cheeks red from the cold he still looked exactly like himself: calm, capable, and completely unfazed by the idea of flinging himself down a mountain.

Libby, meanwhile, was trying not to cry.

“You remember the pizza thing?” he asked.

“Pointy skis in front, wide in back. Yes. The tragic triangle of shame.”

He grinned. “That’s the one. Keep your weight centered, bend your knees a bit. Don’t overthink it.”

“Easy for you to say,” Libby muttered. “You were born on a horse and probably skied out of the womb.”

Nash chuckled. “I was raised with a view of the slopes. Me and the boys used to sled down the back pasture when it iced over. Broke my arm once, but I landed on Jameson, so really, he broke it for me.”

She gave him a wide-eyed look. “You guys are a danger to yourselves.”

“That’s what Grayson says. Usually right before joining in.”

Libby turned to glance uphill. She could see Max and Avery up on the balcony of the lodge, wrapped in blankets, cheering—or maybe laughing, she couldn’t tell. Xander was building what appeared to be a snow rollercoaster and narrating it like a science documentary. Farther down the slope, Grayson was skiing backwards with all the grace of a movie spy, while Jameson was making snow angels mid-slope, yelling something about “becoming one with nature.”

And here she was, about to die on a beginner run.

“I don’t know about this,” she said, peering down the hill. “I’m not exactly… coordinated.”

“You’re braver than you think,” Nash said, tone shifting gently. “You’ve faced worse than this, Libby. And if you fall, I’ll be there to catch you.”

She glanced up at him. That grin again, small and sure. He believed in her. She didn’t know why, but he did. And maybe—maybe she wanted to believe in her, too.

“Okay,” she said, heart thudding. “Here goes.”

She pushed off.

At first, it felt manageable. She was moving! Actually skiing! Her knees wobbled, but she kept her balance, skis in their sad little pizza shape. Nash skied just ahead of her, looking back to coach her through each turn.

“You’re doin’ it!” he called.

“I am, aren’t I?” she yelled back, laughing.

Then her left ski caught on something—a patch of ice maybe—and her center of gravity shifted.

“Oh no—oh no no no—”

She didn’t fall away from him. She fell toward him.

Nash barely had time to react before she collided with him. They both went down in a tangle of limbs and skis, landing in a soft drift of snow, her on top of him.

“Oof,” Nash grunted, but he was already laughing.

Libby blinked down at him, stunned, her hands pressed against his chest. His beanie was crooked, his goggles half hanging off his face, and snow was sprinkled across his beard and lashes like powdered sugar.

“I crushed you,” she gasped.

“I’ve had worse landin’’,” he said, still breathless. “Though this one’s definitely the warmest.”

She let out a stunned laugh, cheeks burning. “I can’t believe I tackled you.”

“You didn’t tackle me. You… gently body-slammed me.” He grinned. “Real graceful.”

Libby groaned and flopped onto her back beside him in the snow, staring up at the sky. “This is humiliating.”

“This is skiing’,” he said. “I’ve wiped out worse just trying to race Grayson. Once landed in a snowdrift and didn’t find my ski for two hours.”

She turned her head. “Are you trying to make me feel better?”

“I am making you feel better. See? You’re laughing.”

She was. And she hated that he was right.

A moment later, Nash propped himself up on his elbow and looked down at her.

“You alright?”

“I think so. My pride is bruised, but nothing else.”

He offered his hand, and she took it, letting him help her up. They stood close together, snow clinging to their coats, skis still attached, arms brushing. Nash’s hand lingered at the small of her back a moment too long before letting go.

From up the hill, Jameson’s voice echoed: “Hey, did Libby just crash into Nash?”

“I told you!” Xander shouted from the lodge balcony. “They’re falling for each other—literally!”

Libby groaned and buried her face in her gloves. “Please bury me in the snow and let the mountain take me.”

Nash just laughed. “Ignore ‘em. You did good, Sunshine.”

She peeked up at him. “You call everyone that?”

“Nope.” He winked. “Just you.”

Her heart did something stupid and warm.

Back uphill, Avery waved from her blanket cocoon. Max was filming them and making exaggerated swooning noises.

“Tell me that’s not going on the group chat,” Libby called.

Max grinned. “Too late! Caption: ‘The moment she fell for him.’”

“You’re all evil,” Libby muttered.

Nash adjusted her scarf gently, fingers brushing her jaw. “Ignore the peanut gallery. Wanna give it another go?”

She stared at the slope. It still looked steep. Still looked like a bad idea. But then she looked at him.

“Yeah,” she said. “Let’s try again.”

This time, he stayed right beside her, their skis gliding in sync. He talked her through each curve, each shift in weight, each gentle stop. She fell once more—into the snow this time, not into him—but he was there before she even had time to flinch, holding out his hand with that easy, warm smile.

And as they stood there, snow dusting their shoulders, Libby realized something:

It didn’t matter how many times she fell.

Not when she had Nash Hawthorne beside her—steady, kind, and just maybe… waiting to fall, too.

Accidental long-ass meta incoming lol

Emmrich "a lowly butcher's son" Volkarin has some unresolved issues regarding his inherent self-worth (☝️ that isn't just tied to his age), despite how much he tells himself social class doesn't matter. The world around him keeps saying otherwise, and Neve even offers sympathy for him regarding how intimidating it must have been to grow up amongst noble mages and scheming highfalutin politicians/Mortalitasi, when he is from humble origins.

I imagine in Emmrich's mind he just sort of "got lucky" that he was taken in by the Mourn Watch after being orphaned (he could have simply gone to an orphanage, his magic hadn't even manifested yet, someone simply took pity on him), then "got lucky" again by turning out to be a mage, and then he "got lucky" yet again by turning out to have a very rare and valuable Mortalitasi skill (corpse whispering).

If I were in his position, surrounded by all these career Necromancers, who have had their entire bloodlines deeply steeped in the hierarchy of the Necropolis, I'd certainly feel the need to prove myself EXCEPTIONAL, to feel like I earned the right to be there. Classic Impostor Syndrome brought on by low social status, and it's especially strong in higher academia.

And like he mentions to Harding, he's had to defend the notion that social status doesn't matter many times; it's to a point where he gets reflexively defensive when it's brought up at all. He expects an argument, to have to justify his place amongst the Noble names when he is just a common 'Volkarin'.

Obviously I prefer the reason he doesn't try to hide his commoner-status is out of sheer principle, but I can't help but think it's also because he might as well stick by it; with his commoner name he literally CAN'T pretend otherwise. In his younger days he might have been tempted to simply pick a fancier-sounding name, make up some rich uncle with an estate and a proper family name - but not only would that not fool anyone, it would be an insult to his parents' memory, and that's unacceptable for him both as a Watcher and as a grieving son.

Oh! And don't even get me started on his (and I mean this affectionately) vanity, the man refuses to have a hair out of line, always properly dressed, bathed and perfumed, never cusses - and all that from a commoner boy from the outskirts of Nevarra City, who used to hug the neighbour's pig regularly. I don't think he's consciously doing it, but a part of him seems keen on denying the messier aspects of life, because it's viewed as lowly and 'beneath propriety' or whatever I'm sure he's been told growing up. It's ok, Emmy, you're allowed to get sweaty and get your hair tousled, we won't judge you. (Yes, I admit, some of that vanity is also coming from his distaste of ageing/being reminded of his own mortality, but still...)

And if you're romancing him, the man is always trying his absolute hardest to impress you, even though Rook's already smitten af, and they're already dating and it really isn't necessary (although one can't complain) and he seems genuinely baffled that you even NOTICED him (despite him being far more accomplished career and skill-wise, the man seems to just consider it a foregone conclusion that he isn't impressive, despite actual evidence to the contrary)

TL;DR that man is burdened by multiple insecurities, even if he's learned to hide it somewhat well by this point in his life. His high-standards, ambition and need for exceptionality in every aspect of himself is a symptom of unaddressed impostor syndrome, and I will die on this hill.

Someone pls tell this man he is amazing, and keep doing it 'till he actually believes it Good Will Hunting-style, pls he needs it so much </3

Emmrich and ambition

Something I don’t see talked about much (although I could have missed it) is Emmrich’s ambitiousness. He’s not just interested in the Fade, he’s the foremost expert in the world. He doesn’t just want to be a Mourn Watcher, he wants to reach the highest possible rank it’s possible for a Watcher to achieve (lichdom). (Obviously there are multiple positive and negative motivations for him to consider lichdom, but his ambitiousness is definitely part of it).

There’s a conversation he has with Harding where she asks him what he would have done if he wasn’t a Watcher, and he thinks about it and eventually says he’d have been a botanist. But not just *A* botanist, noodling around in his greenhouse - he specifically says, “one of the great botanists”. It isn’t enough to just be a botanist, he has to be the best at it.

I’m not at all saying this as a negative thing, fwiw - very often this sort of ambition can come with a sort of big-headedness, especially when one is at the top of one’s field, but that doesn’t seem to be the case with Emmrich (the majority of the time, I’m sure he has his moments like most experts do). Rather, it spurs him on to greater heights and inspires him to share that passion with others. But that drive to Be The Best is definitely there.

It could explain why he was friends with Johanna - on the surface, it does seem a bit out-of-character considering her cruelty, unless you also consider her brilliance. They were on each other’s level academically, and he knew she could help him achieve (and she knew the same about him). I’ve no doubt her ambition was something he particularly admired … maybe *too* much, by his own recognition. Maybe it even spurred on his own.

I also raised an eyebrow when I chose Dorian for Archon and got a little ‘Emmrich approves’ pop up. While you could say it’s just because he likes the idea of a fellow necromancer being in charge - part of ambition is taking action to achieve your goals, and Dorian’s goals are definitely things Emmrich would agree with, even if he might not be in total agreement with his methods (which he might be! We don’t really know, he doesn’t say that much about it). So he’d probably, y’know, admire the conviction and determination if nothing else?

It’s likely something he also admires in Rook, whether romanced or not. Rook is the only person really in the world who is stepping up to tackle this issue, and yes they were already involved but they’re still doing it! It’s maybe also part of why he joins the Veilguard (all pretty ambitious people/the best in their respective fields).

I don’t really have a point here, I just wanted to ramble about an aspect of his personality I don’t see mentioned/explored all that much. Now he’s started seeing the world I’m sure he would like to continue doing that (and iirc his writer said essentially the same thing), but I’m sure he would also be involved in writing the inevitable books about what happened, wanting to be recognised for being part of it all, because - and we're getting into esoteric Waffle Territory here - if you dig into it his ambitiousness is likely all tied up with his fear of death, or perhaps more accurately, of being forgotten. Or perhaps even more accurately, of being left behind. By the world. Like he was by his parents.

are there even any actual ships in aot?? im being so serious rn, i can't remember. apart from like... the married characters i mean? anyway. as long as sexualities are being respected and the characters are in the same age bracket, i couldn't care less about what people ship or don't ship or how they ship it. also, some canon ships are garbage and people can write alternative ships which are way more compelling.

The Cruel Prince series did NOT have one of the most complicated and nuanced father-daughter dynamics I’ve ever read to be marketed as “famous tiktok enemies to lovers, mc is hot bec she kills people”

Say what you will but “Fae general’s human wife fakes her and his heir’s death to marry a mortal man, and have twins only for the fae general to find out years later and is honor bound to  kill both her and her husband (in front of the kids), and ooops, looks like he’s got three kids now! Yeah their mum betrayed him and all, but still they’re her kids, and he’s subsequently honor bound to raise them, and now we get to see the mess one of the younger kids makes in an effort to become part of the country she was spirited away to, murder and blackmail updates at ten” is infinitely more gripping than “tiktok’s 5th most hyped read, enemies-to-lovers, Yass Queen extravaganza of the decade” will ever be.

I will die on the hill that to understand Anidala you have to accept that Padme saw the red flags clear as day and went for it anyway. Why? Because Anakin was honest with her. Because Anakin, for all his idolising and putting her on a pedestal, still saw and treated her as a human being, even argued against her at times without fear or without hiding behind clever words. Because Anakin made her feel the youth that was taken from her at a young age. She was captured by the boyish charm and the awkwardness and the blunt honesty, and so when he came to her with a billion red flags, she went for it anyway. He was a breath of fresh air to her.

To understand Anidala you must understand they are 100% freak4freak. They are both children who grew up too fast and are now in a secret relationship giggling like teenagers in their twenties. This is vital to them. Padme is not a flawless character or an idea of perfection, on the contrary she is a very human character who was put in charge of her people at fourteen, something that had a lasting impact on her, and so she is choosing her childhood joy and a fairytale romance over the red flags her husband is waving. She is the OG ‘I can fix him’ mentality. No one is doing it like her.

Small ways they show affection

Lucifer

Leaves roses on your desk or bedside table with a small cup of tea/coffee for you in the mornings, even if he isnt there, i feel like he would make you something warm to drink along with his normal coffee he has in the morning. Its not outright said, but he cares alot for you to do this every morning without fail, its become part of his routine now, not that he minds

Mammon

I feel like he would subconsciously play with your hair or your jewelry if you both are together, you both could be lost in deep conversation and he would just reach up and start playing with a strand. If you mention it to him, he would turn red and look away, claiming that he did nothing of the sorts

He gives you small shiny objects like a crow. A small bracelet, a pair of earrings, shiny rocks, coins, a cool leaf he found, he would give you those types of things

Leviathan

Leviathan is pretty socially awkward so you don't really get large displays of PDA from the demon, but if your waiting in line or are in a large crowd, he intertwines your pinkies together or holds onto your sleeve

I feel like he would also pre-save games that he thinks that you would really enjoy, sending you a vague text about saving it for you while his face is bright red behind the screen

Satan

He leaves you little note with quotes from romance novels, i will die on this hill. If he finds a book that he thinks you will like, he will leave the book on your desk with a small sticky note that reads something like 'and for the first time in his life, he felt comfortable, and its all thanks to her/him', cheesy stuff like that

Asmodeus

This man is so into PDA, a arm around your shoulder, his hand on your waist, arms linked together, fingers interlocked, he just loves PDA. But when you both are alone, you could just be talking and you have your legs over his lap, he rests his hand on your calf as you both talk

Alone, his touches are more gentle, more loving. He likes touch, and he feels just resting a hand on your leg or just resting his head on you

Beelzebub

He knows all of your favourite devildom drinks and snacks, he makes sure that he brings enough for you while he's on snack time. Sometimes they don't make it to the house but its the thought that counts!

But when they do, he restocks your small snack draw and leaves some on your desk, making sure you never go hungry

Belphegor

He would give you a small bracelet that he tops up with magic every night so that you don't have bad dreams, Is it annoying? Yes, but is it worth it to see you happy? 100% Yes

He would just lean on you, not out of sleepiness (even though it does happen), he likes to lean against your arm or rest his head on your shoulder

This was spurred by chatting with @hastyhobbit on another post but my genuine hill to die on is that the only film industry I would ever trust to do an adaptation of the Silmarillion is, in fact, Bollywood. Not the Indian cinema industry or regional film, but straight up million-dollar budget high-chaos Bollywood 🙏🏽

The sheer commitment to melodrama for melodrama’s sake, the utter camp, the ridiculously Noldorin aesthetics, jewel politics, domineering father figures, lamentations!

Like truly only Bollywood would be able to watch the first kinslaying and go, yeah, I can totally get why Maglor wrote the Noldolante about this. Let’s make it a dance number.

They’ll look at Elwing jumping off a cliff and turning into a fucking bird and put it against a piano-led backing track about motherhood. Elrond and Elros would be played by the same child and spend half their time giggling and running around in the background during the bloodiest scenes to add pathos.

The tagline to the film would be “family is the most important thing”. Huan the dog would be voiced by Boman Irani and make silly little scatological jokes to break up the tension. Celegorm will 100% be called some equivalent of “blondie”.

Beren and Luthien? God, they would BODY that storyline. The love songs. Catching her dancing in the forest. The extended 20 second zoom into Thingol’s furious face while the two of them cavort in the Swiss mountains would put Elrond’s “😡 she stays for you 😡” bit in Fellowship to SHAME.

Heist film + comedy + tragedy + romance + musica + period war drama all in one? Bollywood essentially has a PhD in that exact thing.

And if the Fëanorians do not do this then I do not want them:

i just love love and deepspace so much because the writers inadvertently subvert what is arguably the most popular trope in romance right now that is absolutely plaguing the genre: the callous, cold, (borderline) abusive mafia boss/bad boy/criminal of some kind. sylus is, at first glance, expected to follow all the ten booktok commandments of this trope, like he looks like what you’re supposed to picture when these books are brought up. he comes into the story mysterious, curt, domineering, almost to lull you into an expectation of where this is going. you’ve seen this before, it’s the most popular romance trope of the decade after all, the red flag booktok biker bad boy.

but instead, within literally a few chapters, he is so fucking tender. he is the most emotionally secure out of all the love interests. he looks at our character with nothing but absolute softness and warmth in his eyes. he is ruthless and he is a killer, but our character will know absolutely nothing but gentleness with him from here on out. even canonically in the bedroom, too, what you would expect from this booktok bad boy archetype is a dominant man who relies on violent and/or misogynistic sexual beliefs to fulfill his pleasure; but instead he submits, maybe not in the way you’re thinking of, but he truly gives himself over to our character, all of him on a silver platter. he’s a one woman man (for centuries), constantly asking for confirmation, going slowly with gentle hands, taking the time to imprint nothing but love and care with them. he’s secure in his masculinity, not possessive, protective yes but still knows and trusts that his lover can handle herself. in fact, loves the fact that she can handle herself, especially when up against him. (the man is canonically a bratty sub and i will die on that hill but that’s neither here nor there.)

sylus is the breath of fresh air that the heterosexual genre of romance media desperately needs.

i feel like its my curse to fall in love with side characters but i feel like we dont appreciate mithara’s brilliance enough

like ur gonna look me in my eyes and tell me u willingly miss out on an incredibly written character just bc she doesn’t have as much content and you gotta murk a few twerps to get her. knock her out like the rest of us

like she’s such a fascinating woman. for someone so vindictive and evil she’s so willing to be immediately vulnerable with you and voice her concerns just because you decided to save her and she recognises that most people in their right mind would leave her for dead but You Don’t and she literally doesn’t waste a second expressing her gratitude. who else willingly does that without me having to wrench it out of them huh

and i think it’s so fascinating because she’s literally a commander And Also a noble and yet you can ask her about anything to do with home and her life before and she’ll tell you it all so willingly just because you asked. she doesn’t hide anything from you; everything is out in the open and straightforward from the get go. she’s a no nonsense woman and i deeply respect that

it could also just be a me thing but there’s something i really appreciate about her not really having any specifically romantic greetings. she’s stalwart and alert and ready to run into battle for you until you ask her for a kiss and then her voice softens and she’s sweet and teasing you and it just feels So Much More Natural you know?? i find some of the other romances dialogue to be a little too mushy or on the nose for my liking so minthara is hard Not to romance every time
