CHRISTMAS MIRACLE — COLE CAUFIELD
cole caufield x fem!reader
12 DAYS OF KINKMAS
summary: in which y/n gets stuck with her enemy, Cole, and finds out hate can lead to some miracle discoveries
warnings: NSFW CONTENT, long intro, handjob, p in v (protected), sub!cole (ish?). (4.7k words)
notes: welcome to day 10 of my 12 days of kinkmas! we’re in the final stretch of kinkmas and i hope you guys are enjoying it!
this isn’t how i want to be spending the first day of my break.
well, i guess the first hour of my break.
i was just getting ready to head home, dreading driving in the blizzard of a snow storm and taking my time to psych myself up, when an equipment manager called me over. he told me a player forgot his ipad and is asking if anyone would be willing to drop it off on their way home because he’d like to go over plays during the break.
hesitantly, i said sure, i’d bring it to them; but what i wasn’t aware of, and what i’m sure my coworker conveniently forgot to mention, is that the player in question is Cole fucking Caufield.
it’s not necessarily that i hate Cole; on the contrary, i had always thought he was extremely kind and talented.
in fact, when i had originally interned with the Laval Rocket, he was always incredibly nice to me. and in turn, i fell for him a little each day.
but then, he was called up to Montreal, and the following season, i was offered the position of media manager for the Canadiens.
i was excited, i spent the week leading up to my first day thinking about how wonderful it would be to be able to joke around with Cole again. i thought of sketch tiktoks for the team to do, most with Cole as the leading man because i knew he was a fan favorite, and questions to ask as they took the ice for practice.
and it was great at first. Cole was sweet and he was always willing to take part in team tiktoks, always greeting me with a smile. but around a month later, something changed.
no longer was he the kindhearted individual i was familiar with, instead he was cold shouldered and rude; snarky and arrogant. and that’s the way it’s stayed. for the past few years it’s felt like pulling teeth to try and communicate with him, and even worse to convince him to be in team tiktoks.
which brings me to now, standing at the front door of his house, an ipad tucked under my arm as i stand in the blistering cold. snow sticks on my lashes, flurries in my hair, but my toque does nothing to shield me from the cold Montréal air.
if i drove here on the icy roads, my windshield wipers at full speed, just for him to not even answer the fucking door, i’m gonna lose it.
i bang my fist upon the door again, body shivering from the cold, and it takes merely a moment for him to finally open the door.
he greets me with a wide smile, but when he sees that it’s me who stands before him, that cheery facade drops, a cold, blank expression taking its place.
i can hear the news blasting from his living room as the heated air wafts out of the home, blasting my face and making my nose go numb from the sudden cold to warm.
“what?” he asks, voice monotone.
“here,” i shove the ipad into his chest harshly, making him cough from the sudden impact, “next time, don’t leave your fucking ipad at the rink.”
he glares back, taking the ipad into his hands and parting his lips to argue.
“it was an accident,” he sneers, “trust me, if i knew you would bring it to me, i definitely would’ve double checked i had it.”
you.
my body fills with anger, insulted yet hurt by the way he says it. as though he’s repulsed by me.
“ya know what, asshole?” i don’t even get to finish my quip before i’m cut off a loud alarm coming from the tv.
it gathers both he and i’s attention, his head snapping back to look at the screen, while i peer around him to see it.
“with the blizzard picking up and roads becoming icier, officials have reported that all roads will now be closed for the night. stay inside and stay warm. we’ll get back to you when the storm passes.”
the news reporters words echo through my head, forcing me to end my comeback and just turn around.
i take a step towards the stairs that lead up to his door, but i’m stopped almost immediately.
“hey, where are you going?” Cole calls out from behind me.
“home!”
“they just said the roads are closed.”
“exactly,” i huff, “which means i need to get going quick so that if i get pulled over, i can say i was already driving.”
i’m about to take a step down the stairs when a hand wraps around my forearm, pulling me back.
“don’t be stupid, y/n,” he says, “you’re gonna crash, and i’m not living with your death on my fucking conscience.”
i turn to look at him, a heated glare in my eyes, “i’m not staying with you.”
a mischievous smirk spreads across his lips as he pushes me toward his open door, “yeah, you are.”
i stumble into the warm house, a stark contrast to the weather outside, and i just get my bearing when i hear the door shut, Cole flipping the lock and walking idly past me towards the living room.
“what the fuck is your problem?” i huff, shaking my head as i succumb to my fate, removing my coat and hanging it on a coat hook next to his door.
“my problem?” he looks over at me astonished, “i’m trying not to let you die.”
i roll my eyes, my arms crossing over my chest.
“i would not have died.” but he’s not paying any attention to my words, his eyes locked on something else entirely.
i follow his line of sight straight down to my breasts, inadvertently pushed up from my crossed arms, and my nipples pebbling through my thin dress.
“oh my god,” i hiss, moving my arms to cover my breasts, “fucking pig.”
his eyes snap up to mine before he rolls them.
“get over yourself, it’s nothing special.”
for some reason, i feel offended. not that him looking at them was great, but the way he shrugs it off and implies my tits are average?
“oh fuck off,” i fume, “people would pay to see these.”
he smirks, wiggling his eyebrows a few times, “you saying people pay to see you naked?”
“what? no!” i’m at a loss for words, not an easy achievement for most people, and yet a common occurrence when i’m around him.
“pretty sure that’s what you implied. and i’m sorry to let you down, but i’m not paying twenty bucks to see your rack.”
i gape, blinking at him in shock, “you couldn’t even pay me fifty to see these!”
i’m not even sure why i’m letting this conversation drag on; why i’m even entertaining it.
i sigh, stalking past him and bumping into his shoulder as i make my way to the living room.
“why would i pay when i could see them for free?” he chuckles at my lame tantrum, following behind me.
“what makes you think that?” i sneer, dropping down on the couch, Cole quick to follow.
“well that’s why you took the job, right?” he laughs, “it’s why you were constantly putting me in the spotlight of the team tiktoks and why you were always so buddy-buddy with me? you’re into me.”
i stare back at him in anger, but also frustration. frustration that anyone would think i would take a job just for a man.
“let’s set things fucking straight,” i snap, “i took the job because it was good pay and i grew up here, therefore, the Canadiens are my team and the plan was always to work for them. long before you showed up.
“i put you in the spotlight of the tiktoks because you’re the fan favorite. you have teeny-bopper girls fawning over your nice guy act and for some reason they fucking eat it up. and finally, i was ‘buddy-buddy’ with you because i thought you were a nice fucking guy and you made me believe we could be friends. never would i ever make a career decision for a fucking guy.”
i’m absolutely seething by the end of my rant, one knee bent on the couch and my body twisted to face him.
“sure.”
that one worded response sets me off. i don’t know what it is about Cole Caufield that gives him the ability to get under my skin like nobody else has, but i’m absolutely rageful.
“god, i can’t believe i ever fucking liked you!” i freeze. the words slipped out before i even had a second to process them, and now i watch as a cocky grin paints his face.
“so you admit, you like me.”
“liked. past tense,” i tell him, “i fell victim to your charming, nice guy facade. but never again.”
“you keep saying that!” he grunts, “i am a nice guy!”
“yeah? well, you certainly pick and choose who to be nice to, and for some reason, i’m not on that list.”
i can’t understand for the life of me why i’m suddenly feeling emotional, but i decide in the moment to blame it on pent up frustration. i always have been an angry crier.
“which is fine,” i sniffle, “but god, you didn’t have to be such a fucking dick. i liked you and i thought you liked me; but then all of a sudden you switched up. you started hating me, and i don’t even know what i did!”
Cole seems at a loss for words, shocked by sudden change of emotions. but, he also seems confused, his brows furrowed and a frown upon his lips.
“you don’t know?” he huffs, “i literally asked you out like five times, y/n! and you rejected me every single time!”
now it’s my turn to be confused, “what? no, you didn’t.”
“uh, yeah, i did! i asked if you wanted to go out for drinks after games like five times and every time you said no!”
realization dawns on me, clarity filling my head, and i can’t help but laugh at the ridiculousness of it all.
“why are you laughing?!” Cole groans, head falling onto the back of the couch and hands covering his face.
“because,” i giggle, “this is ridiculous.”
“how?” his response is muffled by the palms of his hands, but i can hear the frustration in his voice.
“because you asked me out five times and all five times, i thought you were just asking if i wanted to join the team for drinks!”
his hands fly away from his face, head snapping up to look at me, “what?!”
i nod my head, overcome by a fit of giggles.
“you thought i was asking you…. to hang out as a group?”
“yes!” i cackle, “and i get uncomfortable in crowded bars, so i made excuses! jesus, Cole! we’ve hated each other for years because i misunderstood your idea of a date!”
Cole is silent for a moment, staring off in front of him at the news playing on the tv, before he slowly begins chuckling.
“oh my god,” he laughs, a hand slapping down on his thigh and making me laugh even harder, “so you hate me now, don’t you?”
“oh yeah,” i nod, “you were a dick!”
“hey!” he chuckles, “you weren’t very nice to me either! i mean just like fifteen minutes ago you shoved an ipad into my chest!”
“you deserved that.” i point to him, narrowing my eyes.
he shrugs, “alright, yeah, i deserved that.”
the room goes mostly quiet, Cole watching the news, while my sight is drawn to the window, watching the snow cascade down to the ground.
we sit there for at least half an hour, him flipping through channels and me watching the blizzard, before a lightbulb goes off in my head.
“hey, i have an idea.” i announce, catching Cole’s attention.
“hmm?”
“i’m sure we both still have some pent up anger and frustration, we can’t exactly just erase the past couple years of hating each other,” he hums for me to continue, “how about a snowball fight?”
he glances over at me with a singular raised brow, “a snowball fight? what, like we’re six?”
“exactly!” i nod, “we get to pelt each other with snowballs and let out any residual anger towards each other, and then we get to start anew. get a clean slate. whadd’ya say?”
his eyes flicker between me and the window for several moments before he nods, “i say let’s do it.”
with that, we scurry from the couch, bundling back into our coats and toque’s, he even lends me a pair of gloves, and then we’re running out into the thick blanket of snow that covers the ground.
we agree on fifteen minutes to build our shields, hurrying to build snow walls as high as we can, and once i deem the ten minutes over, i’m hiding behind my wall, crafting snowballs into a pile beside me.
grabbing one in my hand, i peer out from behind my shield, watch as Cole does the same, and on instinct my hand flexes forward, throwing the snowball as hard as i can.
obviously not from here, Cole’s shield crumbles upon my third snowball throw, making me cackle as the snow cascades down upon him.
he looks over at me with a glare and i duck down, listening to the pelt of snowballs against my shield, but then it goes quiet and all i can hear is the crunch of snow until suddenly it stops.
my brows thread together as i keep an ear out for any sound, but just as i’m about to peer over my wall, it comes crumbling down, and i look up to find the culprit grinning victoriously.
“hey! no fair!” i huff, throwing a snowball right at his chest. he gapes back at me in astonishment.
“you knocked mine down too!” he shouts, a snowball hitting me in the shoulder.
“yeah, but that was an accident! yours was just poorly made!” another snowball to his shoulder, “mine was made well, you knocked it down on purpose!”
he shrugs, taking off and crunching through the snow as he tries to get away. he stops to pick up more snow and i take my chance to throw, hitting him square in the back.
but he doesn’t even turn around, tossing a snowball over his shoulder. i attempt to dodge it but my efforts are in vain as the snow lands directly on the top of my head, making me scoff in frustration.
“rude!” i yell, taking aim and hitting him directly in the back of the head. snow sticks his hair and he whips around to look at me, but upon seeing me; my hat knocked off and snow covering the top of my head, he starts laughing.
“that’s it!” i call out, stomping over to where he’s fallen onto his butt mid-laughter, his eyes squeezed closed as he chuckles with glee.
towering over him, i hold a snowball in my hand, not throwing it, but instead smashing it upon the top of his head.
his laughter falters, his eyes flying open to scowl up at me as i begin to giggle.
“you’re right, that was pretty funny!” i laugh, but i don’t make it long before i step forward, my foot hitting an icy patch of grass, and i fall forward, a squeal leaving my lips as i land on top of him.
“shit.” i breathe out.
“guess you really did fall for me.” he quips and i roll my eyes, but despite the cheesy line and the freezing cold air, the spots in which his hands rest on my sides are burning.
“that was so corny..” i tell him.
“yeah?” he raises a brow, one hand leaving my side, and i almost mourn his touch, but then a handful of snow is being shoved down my coat and i’m squealing, wiggling on top of him as the snow begins to melt into icy water and trickle down my body.
“oh my god, Cole!” i moan in frustration, my face twisting in discomfort.
“don’t do that.” he stiffens, his hands holding me still on top of him.
confusion pinches my face, but then i feel it, his half hardened cock pressing against my thigh.
my teeth sink into my bottom lip, a spark running through my body, but i push myself off of him, standing up and brushing off my coat.
“ya know what sounds good?” i ask him, stepping back as he stands as well.
“what?” he grunts, a small glare pointed my way.
“hot cocoa,” i smile, “or… something else to warm us up.”
“i don’t know if i have cocoa, but i have coffee.”
i nod, “that works! it’ll warm us up and wake us up!”
Cole trudges into the house and i follow suit, but despite my attempt to change the subject, my mind is still stuck on him being turned on.
a gust of air blows through as i reach the door, a shiver traveling down my spine, and i quickly step inside, shutting the door behind me.
i shed my coat and gloves before kicking off my shoes, hanging my now damp hat on the coat hook over my coat.
trailing behind him into the kitchen, i watch as he opens cupboards, rifling through them. i hop up on the counter, legs pressed together, sitting silently until he huffs and turns around.
“i-” he trails off and i follow his eyesight back down to my breasts for the second time today, my nipples stiff and poking through my dress from the previous frigid air.
“Cole.” i snap my fingers, grabbing his attention as his eyes flick back up to my face.
“hmm?”
“god, if you wanna see ‘em, all you gotta do is ask,” i joke, flipping my hair over my shoulder as Cole steps forward.
“can i see them?” he asks, a wicked smirk plastered to his lips.
my lips part, my eyes wide as i blink back at him.
is he serious right now?
surely he’s joking, but i call his bluff, my thumbs slipping through the shoulder collars of my shirt and pulling them down.
i pull my arms out, the top of the dress now only covering my chest, but he continues staring at me. leveling him with a raised brow as i pull the top of my dress down.
i have every intention of just slowly teasing him, but the fabric glides too quickly, my breasts fully exposed to the chilly air now.
his eyes widen and he stumbles slightly in his hurried steps toward me. my teeth sink into my bottom lip, watching him admire my naked chest.
“you actually-” he cuts himself off with a chuckle, his hands hover in the air before them as he peers at me, “can i?”
i nod, and when his cold skin meets mine, a chill runs through me.
lightly pawing at my breasts, his thumb and pointer fingers pinch my nipples, making my back arch involuntary at the stinging touch.
“Cole.” i whimper through a quiet moan.
he steps even closer, nudging my legs open with his body, and my hands reach out, locking around the back of his neck.
“can i kiss you?” i breathe out.
“fuck yeah.”
i pull him forward, finding his lips with mine in a long overdue kiss, and what starts out slow and careful, quickly heats up into something intense and messy.
my tongue slips into his mouth, pushing and battling against his as he continues playing with my nipples, pinching and pulling, rubbing them between us.
a moan reverberates from my mouth and into his, causing him to smile into the kiss.
“you don’t understand how long i’ve been waiting for this.” he mutters, his lips brushing against mine.
“probably not as long as i have.” i tell him honestly, earning a light giggle from him.
his lips capture mine once more, but his hands divert their attention, trailing down my body and pushing my dress down as a result.
“yeah, i forgot, you have the hots for me.” he grins as i lift my hips, allowing him to pull my dress down my legs and fling it onto the counter.
i roll my eyes, wrapping my legs around his waist lightly, “shut up and take me to your room.”
“yes, ma’am.”
i’m almost frightened by the way my core dampens from his reply. i’ve never generally been a dominant person in the bedroom, but there’s something about him that makes me want to become one.
when we reach his bedroom, i unhook my legs, my front sliding down his body and rubbing against his hardened length as my feet lower to the floor.
my hands find the waistband of his sweatpants, still slightly damp from the snow, and i peer at him through my lashes. when he breathes out a lust-driven ‘yes’ in approval, i push them down, allowing him to kick them off and free his cock from the restraint. he pulls his shirt over his head in a rush, leaving him naked before me in all his glory.
tight muscles and chiseled abs make my mouth water, a sculpted v-line leading to his thick cock.
well, now i know why he has his nickname.
leaning in until my lips are nearly pressing against his ear, i whisper an unsure demand, “get on the bed.”
Cole swallows harshly, nodding as he pulls me toward his mattress. sitting on the edge, he looks up at me, awaiting approval, but i shake my head.
“in the middle.” i clarify.
he follows my orders, sitting prettily in the middle of the bed. an animalistic sensation comes over me, urging me to crawl forward on the mattress, and when i do, i hover over him.
one hand rests upon his abs, tracing the results of his stern training regime, while the other presses into the mattress, holding myself up.
i can feel him shiver underneath me as my nails graze across his torso before i find myself trailing down, wrapping my fingers around his erection and giving a small tug.
a hiss falls from his lips, his jaw clenching as his hips jerk up into my fist.
“aww, look at you.” i coo. i bring my hand up to my mouth, licking up my palm before spitting into it twice, rubbing my fingers into it to lubricate it well.
gripping his cock once again, i slowly begin flicking my wrist, pumping as i stare down at him.
shaky curses and tight grunts come from his mouth, his body writhing underneath me, and the sight is enough to make my core pulse, wetness dampening my panties.
i take the moment to trail wet kisses up his chest, starting from the top of his abdomen and leading all the way up to his collarbone.
“so good for me.” i hum, backing away to spit on his cock.
my thumb rubs over his tip, the mix of precum and saliva helping my hand pump his dick smoothly, and he groans loudly, eyes squeezing shut as his face scrunches in pleasure.
“please, y/n,” he whimpers, his voice cracking, “i’m not gonna last. i wanna be inside you.”
“yeah? you think you deserve my pussy?”
i don’t even know who i am anymore, but i find myself liking the newfound confidence that fills my body.
“yes,” he nods harshly, “yes, please!”
my hand stills, releasing him and flattening against the comforter to wipe off the spit.
“condom?” i question, and he points to his bedside drawer, watching closely as i lean over and grab one.
i open the foil packet carefully, discarding it on the nightstand and pinching the tip before slowly rolling it onto him. my motions earn another huffed out breath of pleasure from his lips.
my thumbs hook into the waistband of my panties, pushing them down and off my legs before i throw them to the floor.
crawling back over top of him, i grasp his cock in my hands one more time, rubbing it through my slick folds. it’s glides smoothly through my wetness, and my head tips back as it rubs against my clit.
“fuck, Cole.”
lining him up with my entrance, i sink down slowly, the tip of his cock penetrating my core and stretching out my walls. the stinging pleasure worsens as i sink down lower, and i begin slowly bouncing with shallow movements until it becomes easier to slide onto his erection.
his hands grip my hips tightly, fingertips digging into my skin, but i can’t bring myself to care as i finally take all of him.
“shit.” he curses through gritted teeth, voice tight.
i slowly begin grinding my hips, my clit brushing against his pelvic bone with every movement, and i cry out as i begin bouncing on top of him, his hips meeting mine with shallow thrusts upwards.
my jaw slackens, breathy moans drifting out as i work my hips up and down, listening intently to the sound of his cock sliding through my wetness as my walls draw him in with each downward motion.
“god, you’re so big.” my words are shaky, my hands clutching at his chest in order to support myself.
soon, my legs begin to tire, shaking in both pleasure and exhaustion, and Cole catches on quickly, taking over the brunt of the work as he begins to pound into me from below.
the intensity of his thrusts sends me falling forward, my tits pressing against his chest, and he takes of the position, capturing my lips with his in a heated manner.
his lips press against mine, his tongue exploring my mouth, and it’s a struggle for me not to cry out as the new angle causes the tip of his cock to graze my g-spot with every thrust.
my stomach begins tightening with slowly building pressure, my walls clenching around him with my impending orgasm.
my toes curl, and knowing i’m close, i break our kiss, snaking my hand between our bodies in order to rub my clit.
“fuck, i’m close.” he gruffs, his hips smacking against mine as his thrusts speed up.
i nod my head against him, “me too.”
my fingers circle my clit, pushing me further and further towards the edge, but before i can get there, Cole is one step ahead.
he lets out a harsh grunt, spilling out into the condom as he fucks me through his release, and the feeling of his dick pulsating inside me spurs on my own climax.
my breath hitches, toes curling as i cum around his cock, my fingers slowing down on my clit.
slumping entirely against him, my head lays against his shoulder, his chest rising and falling rapidly beneath me.
“what the fuck just happened?” i pant, rolling off of him in favor of burying myself into his side.
his arms wrap around my waist, pulling me tighter to him as he chuckles.
“a goddamn christmas miracle.”
i giggle loudly, a snort escaping me and in turn making him laugh harder.
when we finally calm down, our breathing evening out and our bodies feeling somewhat more relaxed, Cole gets out of the bed, disposing of the condom in his en-suite bathroom trashcan before returning with a wet rag.
i open my legs, my hips jerking as he cleans me up, and i wait patiently as he pulls on a pair of boxers, throwing me a pair and a clean t-shirt.
i pull them on quickly, eager to cuddle more, and when he finally joins me back in the bed, my leg is quickly thrown over his hips, my arm resting on his chest as my head gets buried in his neck.
“you’re a cuddler.” he states the obvious, his hand running up and down my back as i hum in agreement.
“is that a problem?” i question, eyes fluttering shut, and i can feel him shake his head.
he pulls me in tighter, pressing a kiss to my forehead, “just an observation for the future.”
“the future?”
“oh yeah, you’re not getting rid of me now.” he tells me, but i can hear it plain as day; he’s nervous.
i heave out a deep sigh, my body melting into his before i answer, “wasn’t planning on it.”

INT. WATSON’S ROOM
JOHN Hello, Hello, Hello! It’s Doc Watson here to uh- or just John, John is fine too. Um, but I am here to share another spine chilling case with you lovely listeners. This was a dark one folks, so be cautious. Warnings for death, a couple of those, uh parental abuse, some light usage of the S word, and one inflammatory F bomb by yours truly. If none of that is enough to scare you off, well then, good luck and enjoy the adventure of the Speckled Band.
AUDIO CUT
INT. WATSON’S ROOM
Door opens with a bang.
SHERLOCK Your presence is required in the living room.
John gasps awake. Sherlock removes John’s bed covers.
JOHN Huh? What?
SHERLOCK We have a client. In the living room. Ms. Hudson informed me at 6:45, I let you sleep an extra half hour but you really must be up now.
John yawns.
JOHN It’s 7:15? And you’re awake?
SHERLOCK (darkly) Like I said, Ms. Hudson woke me.
JOHN Alright, alright, uh- let me just get some trousers on.
Sherlock moves to leave.
JOHN (CONT.) Hold on, is that my microphone?
SHERLOCK I assumed you’d want it.
JOHN (pleasantly surprised) Well, uh, yes, thank you.
SHERLOCK You’re welcome. Now come along, Ms. Hudson is bringing up tea.
Intro music plays
INT. 221B BAKER STREET - LIVING ROOM
John enters the living room, trousers successfully retrieved.
JOHN Hello there. John Watson, nice to meet you.
HELEN (quietly) Helen Stoner.
John takes a seat.
JOHN So you're a fan of the podcast?
HELEN Sorry, what?
JOHN Oh I just- the Sherlock & Co podcast. It’s my, well, part of our business. I assumed that’s how you found us.
HELEN No, uh I found you on Reddit actually. r/Holmes. I read about a case with these missing opals, from the account FarintoshRed. I thought Mr. Holmes might be able to help me too.
SHERLOCK I vaguely remember the name Farintosh, the opal tiara even more. Now Ms. Stoner what is it that brings you all the way from Surrey this early in the morning?
HELEN I- Did someone tell you I was coming?
SHERLOCK The return ticket is sticking out of your purse.
HELEN (nervously) Oh, right.
Mariana enters the room.
MARIANA I have several cups of very caffeinated tea and a couple of day-old scones. They're only half rock hard.
JOHN Ah, Mariana, you're an angel.
SHERLOCK Yes, thank you. Although I’d prefer something a little stronger than caffeine…
JOHN Not this early in the morning, please. I’d at least like to keep the substance abuse to an afternoon activity.
MARIANA (to Helen) You can just ignore them.
HELEN Um, thanks.
SHERLOCK So early train, and by the mud on your coat, a taxi before with an unexpected rain shower. A little dangerous to be out by yourself before the sun's up. I assume you took this trip without permission?
MARIANA (whispered to Sherlock) Sherlock, that's a little patronizing.
SHERLOCK It would be if our client wasn’t a teenager.
JOHN (also whispered to Sherlock) Mate she’s got grey hair.
HELEN No he’s right, I’m 17.
JOHN Oh! I’m- God, sorry I just didn’t. Blimey.
HELEN I get that sort of reaction a lot. The hair’s genetic or something. My sister had it too. But that’s sort of why I’ve come. Not because of my hair but um… My 18th birthday’s in a couple weeks and… I think maybe I might be dead before then.
MARIANA (tentatively) And… why do you think that?
HELEN Because it happened to my sister, 2 years ago.
Pause.
HELEN (CONT.) I live with my step father, Greg Roylott, uh in this old family estate of his, Stoke Moran. My mum married him when my sister and I were both two. And you know, everything was fine, we were a totally normal family, but when my mum died, when we were about eight, uh, well Greg got really depressed. We were all torn up about it, but he… he could get really, really angry. The last couple of years my sister and I had to get him out of a lot of bad situations. Julia- my sister, she had a really hard time with it. Kids at school could get pretty nasty about it all, and I mean everyone in our village talks. It was a lot, still is a lot. But she decided, two years ago, that she'd had enough. She snuck off one night to stay with one of my mum's old friends, Honoria Westphail, for a couple of weeks.
SHERLOCK And you stayed?
HELEN Greg is- he's the only father I've ever known. I thought you know- everyone deals with grief differently, if I just gave him enough time... He never touched me or Julia.
SHERLOCK But Julia ran away.
HELEN Yeah, and not just. Ms. Westphail was helping her file for emancipation. We were both 15, and she didn't even have a bank account yet, but she wanted to get as far away from Greg as possible. She needed the money from our mother's inheritance.
SHERLOCK Which neither of you receive until your 18th birthday.
JOHN Or you're legally declared independent.
HELEN Right. But then Greg, he, well he reached out to Julia, said he wanted to make amends, that he'd been talking with people, trying to get better. I thought he was telling the truth, I mean at that point it had been weeks since he'd gotten into a fight in town, or come home drunk from the pub.
Helen pauses.
HELEN (CONT.) (voice choked) I convinced Julia to come back when he asked her over for dinner.
MARIANA If you want to take a moment-
Helen sniffs.
HELEN No it's- I can keep going. Dinner went fine, I mean Julia and Greg were never the closest, but you could tell he was trying. He didn't even bring up the whole emancipation dealings. We all went to bed around the same time, but Julia had come into my room complaining of a headache pretty soon after that. Greg likes smoking these Indian cigars before bed, and Julia and his rooms have connected ventilation, and she, uh, was always sensitive to smells like that. I didn’t mind the company, there was this awful storm going on outside, and in a house as old as ours, it gets kind of spooky.
JOHN Old manor house on a dark and stormy night? I bet.
HELEN Exactly. And um, Julie only stayed for a bit but- she asked me if I'd heard any whistling at night while she’d been gone. Like a tea kettle going off, I remember her describing it. It was such a weird question, and I know I hadn't heard anything like it before, but like I said the house is really old, and we don't have the money for many repairs. I just told her it had to be some drafty part of the house. I don’t think she actually ever believed me… and then uh, that's when she went back to her room. I watched her lock her door.
SHERLOCK Did you both routinely lock your doors at night?
HELEN Yeah, force of habit I guess. When we were younger we were always scared the Cheetah or Baboon would escape in the middle of the night.
Weighted Pause.
JOHN Er- Cheetah and Baboon?
HELEN Sorry, yeah, Greg's dad, back in the 80's was mad obsessed with India I guess? He lived there for a while, and he decided to like- make an attraction of the old Manor. There used to be a pretty massive menagerie of Indian wildlife attached to the house. Honestly it's why Greg had no money coming into the marriage with my mum. His dad spent it all. These days all that's left are the Cheetah and Baboon. Just one more reason for people to talk, you know?
MARIANA I can imagine...
SHERLOCK So the door was locked.
Helen takes a deep breath.
HELEN I woke up to her screaming. It was- I've never heard anything like that scream. Then there it was, a whistle, like a tea kettle, and uh then this large metal clang, and it shocked me enough I was able to get myself out of bed.
SHERLOCK The locked door-?
HELEN She was able to open it herself. That’s how I found her, the door opened before I got to it. She was- her eyes were bulging, and I could- I could see the veins in her forehead. The storm had knocked out the power by then but she was holding her phone flashlight. I- I caught her there, in the hallway. She fell into my arms and I could tell she couldn’t breath, she couldn’t- but she managed to tell me “Helen! It was the band! The speckled band!” That’s how Greg found us, I don’t remember much after. I think he tried to do CPR, and I called 999… She was dead before they got there.
MARIANA (very sincerely) I am so sorry.
Helen continues as if she hasn’t heard.
HELEN I was… shell shocked. Everyone was pointing fingers at our step-dad, and even then I couldn’t, I couldn’t really believe. The windows of her room are barred, the fireplace was bricked up, the door was locked. There’s nothing he could have done to her.
JOHN The coroner couldn’t find anything? No foul play, no poison in her system?
HELEN I know they did a thorough search, like I said everyone was sure Greg had something to do with it. There wasn’t anything. Eventually they marked it down as a “cerebral embolism”.
Helen gives a very sharp laugh
HELEN (CONT.) She was 15!
Heavy pause. Helen collects herself.
SHERLOCK This all happened two years ago, you’ve had time to doubt him, to look for help elsewhere- but something changed recently. Ms. Stoner, what happened?
HELEN Last week, Greg said that- there was some work around my room that needed to be done. Structural stuff that needed to be fixed. He moved me into Julia’s bedroom and- (Helen takes a shuddering breath) I heard the whistle. Last night, Mr. Holmes, I heard the whistle again.
AUDIO CUT
Interlude music plays briefly.
INT. 221A BAKER STREET - MARIANA’S OFFICE
MARIANA I’ll make sure she gets to the train station alright. I have a bad feeling about leaving her alone.
JOHN Thank you, Mariana… God I can’t- doesn’t this feel a little wrong? That we’re her last line of defense I mean?
MARIANA I suppose, it is frustrating that it’s taken all this for something to be done. But there’s no one I trust more than Sherlock to help her. She only has us, but at least it’s us.
JOHN Right. No you’re right.
Pause.
MARIANA I’ll see you in a bit.
JOHN Be safe.
The front door to 221 Baker Street opens. The sounds of the street filter in. The door closes and it is quiet once more.
JOHN (to the listeners) So, we’ve taken the case. Obviously. There’s still a part of me that can’t quite believe it, but well- it was hard to say anything but yes.
John enters the flat.
INT. 221B BAKER STREET - LIVING ROOM
JOHN I’ve got us train tickets leaving in an hour. You better start packing.
SHERLOCK I’ve already finished. I’ve got noise canceling headphones, my pistol and my toothbrush.
JOHN (john laughs) Ah, planning on shooting your mouth off then?
SHERLOCK (baffled) What? No, of course not.
JOHN No its- it’s a joke from M*A*S*H. Ya know- Frank took his gun and his toothbrush, there he goes shooting his mouth off again… I’m realizing, suddenly, this was one of my more obscure references so I am… going to stop.
SHERLOCK Good.
Pause. John takes a deep breath in.
JOHN You don't think we're being pranked do you? I mean, that was all- a little mad. I mean the Cheetah and Baboon detail? It sounds like something that would go viral on TikTok.
SHERLOCK You’re only saying that because she’s 17. It was the truth, every detail of it, there's no doubt in my mind. Besides, the Indian menagerie in Surrey is about the easiest detail to corroborate, here look.
Sherlock hands over his phone.
JOHN “They Bought a Zoo Before it was Cool: the sordid tale of Surrey’s oldest family and their lost fortune” Jeeze, okay. So not a TikTok prank then.
John sighs.
JOHN (CONT.) Maybe I just don't want to imagine someone willing to kill a 15 year old girl. I mean… why?
SHERLOCK Why else Watson? Money. In both instances, Julia’s emancipation, and Helen’s 18th birthday, he loses the money from their mother’s inheritance.
Pause.
JOHN You don't think Helen was lying about Roylott not... not hitting them do you?
SHERLOCK (carefully) No, she was telling the truth there too, I assume that would leave too much evidence for the courts. There are other ways to keep someone under control...
JOHN Well Roylott better hope we don't meet up with him anytime soon, I swear I see his face and it's one, two lights out.
SHERLOCK You may be getting that wish sooner than later.
JOHN What do you mean?
SHERLOCK Greg Roylott is on our front stoop-
The downstairs door slams open. Muffled yelling. Heavy footsteps.
JOHN Oh God, I forgot to lock it when Mariana left.
SHERLOCK (harshly) Get back from the door. The heavy footsteps approach faster.
JOHN Well this one is locked- The door to 221B is thrown open with a crash.
JOHN Shit!
DR. ROYLOTT Where is she? Where the Hell is my daughter?!
JOHN Sir you can't just barge in here-!
DR. ROYLOTT Which one of you is Holmes?
SHERLOCK That would be me, but I'm afraid you have the advantage, I don't know you.
DR. ROYLOTT Dr. Gregory Roylott, as if you don't know you slippery bastard.
SHERLOCK Of course Doctor, please have a seat. We were just finishing our morning tea.
DR. ROYLOTT I'm not here for tea, my step-daughter's been here. I tracked her phone so don't try and lie Holmes. She was here not 4 minutes ago.
JOHN Now hold on-
SHERLOCK You know, it is a little cold for this time of the year.
JOHN (under his breath) What?
DR. ROYLOTT What's she said to you?!
SHERLOCK But I have heard we'll be getting an early spring, the crocuses are close to blooming. I have a feeling it's going to be quite lovely.
DR. ROYLOTT Oh come off it, I know what you’re doing! I looked you up online, you're a couple of con artists looking to make a buck off my girl, huh? Put her on your bloody podcast right? She's 17, what are two men of your age doing letting her into your flat? I could have the police-
Sherlock laughs. It goes on longer than it should.
SHERLOCK Your conversational skills are entertaining, when you leave, mind closing the door. Like I said, it is cold for this time of the year.
Pause. Dr. Roylott chuckles darkly.
DR. ROYLOTT Alright, have it your way. But hear this, stay away from my girl, I'm a man of means, I wouldn't take my threats lightly gentleman.
Dr. Roylott turns to leave.
JOHN (very sarcastically) Great meeting you Mr. Roylott.
DR. ROYLOTT It’s Dr. Roylott to you.
JOHN Yeah well, it’s Dr. Watson to you, you pratt.
Dr. Roylott leaves. The door is slammed with tremendous force.
John lets out a very relieved sigh.
Sherlock laughs again.
SHERLOCK Fine fellow, we’ll have to have him round again.
JOHN (not paying attention) I think he broke the door hinges!
SHERLOCK I suppose it’s best it didn’t come to anything physical, but I’m fairly certain I could have taken him. He lagged slightly to the right.
JOHN (still not paying attention) He definitely broke the door.
SHERLOCK Grab your stuff Watson, I think it’s time we were on our way as well.
JOHN You know I’ll have to call Mariana about this.
AUDIO CUT
INT. LONDON WATERLOO TRAIN STATION
The noises of a busy train station. The intermingling of engines, voices, and footsteps.
JOHN Yeah, I know- clear off the hinges. Forced the lock through the door frame- (pause) Alright. Thanks Mariana. Yep. Yeah. Talk soon, bye. (to Sherlock) The whole door’s gonna have to be replaced, can you believe that?
SHERLOCK Yes, I think you’ve mentioned it once or twice now.
JOHN Sorry, I’m just coming to the realization I live in a world where a man can literally break down my door in one go.
John sighs. A distant intercom plays.
JOHN (NARRATING) I suppose now is as good a time as any for some shout outs. I’m still new to Tumblr but the community on there has been nothing but supportive, so I’ve some awesome people I’d like to mention from there. So special hello to @tsukihasnolife who I’ve already commissioned to do some incredible art for this episode. We’ve also got @eardefenders, @starfruitsomething and @littleoceanbabe who I hear are all working hard on a flash bang for other fans of Sherlock & Co. Not sure what a flash bang is, but I appreciate the publicity and support! And lets see maybe some people from Twitter or er X now-
SHERLOCK Watson the train.
JOHN Oh God, yeah. Uh, bye! Thanks again.
AUDIO CUT
INT. UBER
The car drives alone on the road, engine humming softly.
JOHN We are back in Surrey listeners, you may remember the last time we were here was for the case of the Solitary Cyclist. (to Sherlock) You know maybe we should check in with Violet-
SHERLOCK I sincerely doubt Ms. Carruthers would enjoy seeing us Waston. We were at least slightly culpable in her brother's outburst.
JOHN (muttered) I wasn't the one with the gun. (John coughs) But Uh- yeah, yeah that's probably for the best.
DRIVER So where are you guys headed exactly?
SHERLOCK (in his just-one-of-the-mates voice) Stoke Moran, I've heard it's a real piece of work.
DRIVER Yeah, the place should be demolished if you ask me, it’s a death trap.
SHERLOCK Well that's why we're here, come to make a couple of estimates for the bloke who lives up there.
DRIVER Fair warning mate, lots of contractors have been through there. The Doctor, Roylott, he doesn't have the money to pay.
SHERLOCK Really? Big family estate like that with no money?
JOHN Sherlock, look-
SHERLOCK Sorry, would you mind stopping here?
DRIVER We're still a mile out-
JOHN We like the fresh air, thanks for the ride. Uh- five stars!
John and Sherlock exit the car. The car drives off.
EXT. THE GROUNDS OF STOKE MORAN
JOHN That is Helen over there isn't it?
SHERLOCK (in his normal voice) Yes. Probably best we catch her here, I don't want to get too close to the house until we're sure the good Doctor is nowhere near. (voice raised) Ms. Stoner!
Sherlock and John walk to catch up with Helen. Helen approaches, slightly out of breath.
HELEN Hi. I was hoping I’d catch your car on the way in.
SHERLOCK We had a visit with your step-father this morning, just after you left.
HELEN (taken off guard) What but I- he’s barely ever up by 11, and no one would have told him-
SHERLOCK You’re phone Ms. Stoner, I’m afraid he’s been tracking your phone. I would suggest checking your settings for the parental controls he installed without your knowledge.
HELEN If he knows that I- that I came to you-
SHERLOCK If he makes any motion to harm you Ms. Stoner we will personally escort you to Ms. Westphail’s house tonight. But I doubt with the way things are turning out he will try anything that obvious.
JOHN Like busting down a door.
HELEN What?!
Sherlock clears his throat pointedly.
SHERLOCK We’re getting ourselves a room at the village Inn, we have no intention of leaving you alone. Now Ms. Stoner is it possible we could enter the house undetected? I would very much like to see your sister and Dr. Roylott’s rooms.
HELEN Yeah, yeah I can manage that. He had work in London today, I thought- anyway he won’t be back till this evening.
SHERLOCK Lead the way Ms. Stoner
AUDIO CUT
EXT. STOKE MORAN
JOHN (out of breath) We are just now approaching the manor. It's uh- it really is something to see. Which since you can't see listeners, you'll have to take my word for it. Stoke Moran is uh grey, and big. Uh- I can do better than that, hold on. It's... lichen-blotched stone, with a high central portion and two curving wings, like the... claws of a crab. Sort of. Like if a crab had its pincers raised, you know? The left crab claw has broken windows blocked with wooden boards, and the roof is partly caved in, a uh picture of ruin. The middle bit- the body I guess? It’s in okay shape, it’s got some large observation windows near the ground floor. The right-claw looks to be the only section of the house that's still livable. Pretty modern, at least it's got blinds in the windows, and appears to be standing on its own.
HELEN What’s he doing?
SHERLOCK Narrating. He does it when he’s nervous.
JOHN I do it because a podcast is an auditory experience. Can’t exactly wave a camera around to show them- hold on, what’s this over here?
HELEN Oh I wouldn’t-
An animal screeches, a mammal howl, and it slams itself into its glass walled enclosure.
John screams.
The microphone falls. Helen and Sherlock break out into surprised laughter.
HELEN (through laughter) That's the menagerie. Sorry.
The Baboon calls out softly through the glass. There's rustling as John quickly retrieves the microphone.
Sherlock and Helen continue to laugh.
JOHN Seriously, how is this even legal?
AUDIO CUT
INT. STOKE MORAN MANOR - JULIA'S ROOM
A door creaks open slowly. Helen, Sherlock and John enter the room, footsteps echoing loudly.
HELEN So this is- this is Julia’s room. Mine’s just next door to the right, and then to the left is Greg’s room.
SHERLOCK And this is where you’re currently staying because of the restoration work?
HELEN Yes.
Sherlock walks around the room.
SHERLOCK These bed drapes- were they Julia’s?
HELEN Uh- no. No they weren’t really her taste. I think Greg had them put up when she was living with Ms. Westphail.
JOHN (darkly) He seems to have a habit of making living decisions for you.
Sherlock steps up onto the bed, bed springs squeal.
JOHN (CONT.) (pained) Sherlock, your shoes on the bed-
SHERLOCK (ignoring John) This ventilator, right above the bed, does it work?
HELEN Oh that, no, at least not since I’ve moved in. It’s completely freezing here at night.
SHERLOCK Interesting for such a recent refurbishment. Do you remember when this was installed?
HELEN Uh- it- it actually may have been around the same time as Greg hung the bed drapes. When Julia was gone.
Sherlock jumps down from the bed.
SHERLOCK I think I’ve seen enough here. Would you mind leading us to your step-father’s room?
HELEN Sure, like I said, It’s right next door.
Helen, Sherlock and John leave the room.
INT. STOKE MORAN MANOR - DR. ROYLOTT’S ROOM
The door to Roylott’s room opens. John gives a low whistle.
JOHN Well. This is- something.
HELEN Yeah, it’s a lot. Mostly stuff he inherited from his dad.
JOHN For our listeners, the Doctor has, well lots of… collectables lets say, I am presuming from India. Almost every wall and shelf is covered in Hindu icon paintings and sculptures.
SHERLOCK Murtis, not icons. They’re meant to be used in homes and temples for worship. Not... as collectables.
JOHN Yeah, so- it’s extremely distasteful. Not like I needed another reason to dislike this guy. Besides all of the uh- memorabilia in the Doctor’s room, there’s this massive safe- and uh, a bowl of milk is set on top. Helen, do you happen to have a cat around here?
HELEN (pause) No. I’m allergic.
JOHN Could be for the Cheetah, maybe?
SHERLOCK Perhaps… Helen, is it your step father that deals with the animals?
HELEN Er, not really. He feeds em, but he stays out of their enclosures. Honestly he doesn’t pay much attention to them these days. He’s got a vet who comes to see them every couple months or so- but she comes by with her own equipment.
Sherlock moves further into the room.
SHERLOCK Have you ever seen him use this?
HELEN No. What is that?
SHERLOCK It’s a catch pole. Normally these are used by professionals in animal control.
HELEN Right- well maybe the vet left it behind last time she was here?
Pause.
SHERLOCK Possibly… Well Ms. Stoner, I have seen what I’ve needed.
HELEN Well, do you know how it happened? How he did it?
SHERLOCK I can’t answer that quite yet. But we will be back tonight. Your old room, you can still comfortably sleep there at the moment?
HELEN (guardedly) I could…
SHERLOCK Good. Tonight, when your step-father falls asleep, shine a light through your bedroom window, and then leave to sleep there. Watson and I will be spending the night in your place. We will see for ourselves what plans he had for you.
AUDIO CUT
Musical interlude.
INT. SURREY INN - JOHN AND SHERLOCK’S ROOM
The room is quiet. John taps absentmindedly at the microphone. It is super annoying.
SHERLOCK You have a question?
JOHN No. Nope, just… thinking.
SHERLOCK (begrudgingly) I’m not certain what it is.
JOHN But you have a pretty good idea.
SHERLOCK I’ve been wrong before.
JOHN (skeptical) Rarely. If ever.
SHERLOCK You have theories I’m sure.
JOHN Not- not really. The new heating vent that doesn't work… that’s unusual, and purposeful. I thought maybe a nerve gas agent-
Sherlock makes a quiet noise of dissent.
JOHN But- I know that makes no sense, so I’ve got nothing. And then there's the whole issue of the speckled band... a clothing item, a poison...
SHERLOCK You’re picking up on the important details.
JOHN So are you going to share with the class what's actually going on?
SHERLOCK We’ll see tonight. Or we won’t.
JOHN (joking) I see how it is, plausible deniability. Can’t be wrong if you don’t say it out loud.
SHERLOCK John.
JOHN Yes?
SHERLOCK I think you should get some sleep before tonight.
JOHN Right, yeah. (pause) You’re not wrong though, whatever you're thinking, I know you’re not wrong.
Pause.
JOHN (CONT.) Goodnight.
Pause. John settles into bed.
SHERLOCK Thank you.
AUDIO CUT
Musical interlude
SHERLOCK Watson. Wake up, Ms. Stoner has given us the signal.
John shifts in bed. He yawns.
JOHN I really hope this isn’t a habit you're developing. Waking me up in the early hours of the morning I mean.
SHERLOCK Come along, Watson, no time to dawdle.
JOHN Dawdle. Funny word, dawdle. Dawdle. dawdle... and now it just sounds fake. (pause) Hang on… where did you get a cane?
AUDIO CUT
EXT. STOKE MORAN
JOHN (out of breath) We are back on the grounds of Stoke Moran, making our way up to the house. And- I am really wishing we could pick cases that didn’t require so much walking in the dark.
SHERLOCK We’re close to the door Helen said she’d leave open for us. Keep quiet, and keep your flashlight down.
JOHN Yep. Yep got it. Uh- aren’t we also close by to the-
Something thumps against the glass wall. Sherlock yelps.
The Baboon gives a howling laugh, tearing away from the window.
Sherlock takes in several gasping breaths. John snickers.
JOHN See? Not so funny when it’s you, the Baboon jumps.
SHERLOCK No. Comment.
John laughs quietly. He moves forward.
JOHN The doors over here by the way.
AUDIO CUT
INT. STOKE MORAN MANOR - JULIA’S ROOM
JOHN So we took a back entrance that Helen showed us early today. We have safely made it into Julia’s old room. So… now we just wait and listen for a whistle I guess.
SHERLOCK I’ll take the bed, under the vent. For your safety, the rocking chair in the corner is best.
JOHN You just don’t want me to accidentally fall asleep on a stake out again.
SHERLOCK (whispered) It is imperative we stay as quiet as possible now.
JOHN (whispered back) Of course.
SHERLOCK Which means we’ll be sitting in silence for a good portion of the night.
JOHN Yeah mate, I know how quiet works.
SHERLOCK I thought a warning might be nice.
JOHN Well, thanks, I appreciate that. (to himself and the microphone) Of all the things he chooses to warn me about and- oh Christ, the listeners, right-
AUDIO CUT
JOHN (whispered) It is… currently four in the morning. We haven’t heard a peep. I don’t know if we scared Roylott off today, or threw him off his game, but I don’t know if it’s happening tonight.
SHERLOCK Watson.
JOHN What? Did you hear something?
SHERLOCK No.
JOHN Alright. Yeah, quiet. I can do quiet.
SHERLOCK Watson...
JOHN Sorry yeah-
SHERLOCK No, listen!
A high pitched whistle blows softly from above.
SHERLOCK Stay back.
JOHN Hold on, let me get my camera light on, I can’t see.
SHERLOCK No, John the vent is opening!
A large CLANG as Sherlock’s cane hits the vent. A hiss, something slithers back through the vent away from them.
Dr. Roylott SCREAMS from the other room.
JOHN (panicked) What on Earth was that?
SHERLOCK We’ll need the light Watson, hurry.
INT. STOKE MORAN - DR. ROYLOTT’S ROOM
Rushed footsteps. A door bursts open.
Roylott moans.
JOHN Fuck! Is that-?
DR. ROYLOTT (strained and slightly slurred) Get it off me!
JOHN A snake, the speckled band was a snake?!
SHERLOCK Hand me the catch pole. By his leg, there!
JOHN Right-
John moves, he grabs the catch pole. Sherlock takes the pole. The snake hisses, Roylott blubbers in panic and pain.
SHERLOCK The safe, open the door to the safe!
JOHN The- oh! There’s a whole terrarium in there.
The snake hisses again. Louder.
SHERLOCK Watson!
JOHN Got it!
The safe is forced open more. Sherlock places the angered snake inside. John closes the safe with a loud METALLIC CLANG.
John gives a sigh of relief. Roylott moans again, and then tumbles to the floor.
DR. ROYLOTT (gasping) It’s- Swamp Adder- the venom- it bit me.
JOHN Oh God, right, okay, just, hold on- Dr. Roylott, I need you to stay calm. (to Sherlock) Call emergency services! He’s going into anaphylactic shock, I can’t-
SHERLOCK (seriously) They won’t have the anti-venom.
JOHN Just call! I don’t- Maybe I can do another tracheotomy, there’s got to be a pen around here, maybe a letter opener.
John stands. He looks frantically for tools to help.
SHERLOCK John-
JOHN I’m thinking!
SHERLOCK John!
JOHN What?!
SHERLOCK He’s dead.
JOHN But he- (pause) His pulse stopped.
SHERLOCK I’ll call now.
JOHN Um- yeah. Okay. (pause) I’ll- I’ll go get Helen. I’ll see if we can get a hold of Ms. Westphail.
Tense pause.
SHERLOCK He did it to himself, John. He did this to Julia, and he was going to do it to Helen.
JOHN (strained) You’re right, yeah. (John sniffs) I’ll go get Helen.
John leaves, the door closes softly behind him.
AUDIO CUT
Musical interlude.
INT. JOHN’S ROOM
JOHN Well folks, that is the end of the case. Say au revoir to the speckled band, which is now, along with the Cheetah and Baboon being safely handled by some animal conservationist group. Apparently cheetahs are a very endangered species so, Roylott was definitely keeping that illegally. Um, as for Helen, she is now happily settled with her aunt. Obviously, this was a bit of a shock for her but… she’s, she’s in a better place now thank God. And Roylott, well you all know how he ended up. I don’t uh- I don't have much else to say other than that. The Swamp Adder venom really-
The door to the bedroom opens. Sherlock walks in.
SHERLOCK Oh, you’re not done yet.
JOHN Nope, just doing the wrap up.
SHERLOCK Do you mind?
JOHN No, come on in. I was just talking about the Swamp Adder.
Pause.
SHERLOCK You know... there’s no such thing.
JOHN What?
SHERLOCK He misidentified the snake, there’s no such thing as a Swamp Adder.
JOHN But we saw it-
SHERLOCK We saw an Indian Saw-Scaled viper, Echis Carinatus if you want to be technical, and while extremely venomous, it is by no means the most venomous snake in India. That would be the Common Krait.
JOHN You know all that, but you couldn’t name one Madonna song last week at the pub?
SHERLOCK Well the next time Madonna gains the ability to inject 12 milligrams of venom into her victims in one bite, then I’ll try my best to remember her discography.
JOHN Right okay, well you heard it here folks, world class detective, violinist, podcast co-host, Sherlock Holmes, can also add snake expert to his list of accomplishments.
SHERLOCK Herpetologist.
JOHN What?
SHERLOCK An expert in reptiles and amphibians, a Herpetologist.
JOHN Okay that- that can’t be real.

TW : Do not read if sensitive to violence!
Part 4 is going to be MUCH shorter than the previous writes, due to lack of motivation and how Alice rarely appears.
This will start when the breakout already happened!
The Experiment Massacre
Pt: 4/???
The Experiment Massacre:
Alice's Pov:
The alarms blare, loud and ferocious booms.
My ears ring.
"Oh shit...shit...shit..."
I say frantically
"Where is it...where is it..."
I run around, hoping to find the nursery soon enough...before they get there.
"Them bloodthirsty monsters won't be able to hold back too long..."
The fear sets in, when I hear the cries of children...panic...fear...death. . .
I see the door to the nursery, wide open, with a long tail sticking out...it swishes...so happily...
Soon enough, a couple armed humans come running by and shoot at whoever it was, it pounced them...tearing them to shreads.
I make a run for it...toward the nursery...I look around...everything's in shambles...all cribs knocked over...everyone...gone...
"Awh fuck..."
I see the name of my own child...crib knocked over...and nowhere to be seen...
I fall down to my knees...and sob.
My own child...gone...?
Gone.
I failed.
"No...this can't be...happening..."
I cry, and beg for him to come back...even though, I know he ain't...
Suddenly...a baby Mp.3 plays...the most commonly installed sound effect...for a child...?
"Hello?"
I look around and follow the sound...only to find a small baby with blue eyes...all alone...on the floor.
"Oh my robo-jesus...who left you here, little one?"
I say in a caring tone...
I look around for a little and look back at it
"My name is Alice...and yours is?"
I look around again, and find a name tag
"Beau...what a nice name..."
I stare at Beau for awhile, observing his little details...for once...everything seemed so quiet...and at peace...
A loud bang occurs...its coming from the door...huge dents appear on it...
"Beau...I promise I'll keep you safe...no matter what..."
I said in a terrified tone.
[End of Alice's pov]
Author's note: Finally! All of the "intro" are done! From now on, it will be second person pov and usually merge all 4!

strawberry vines; s.f.k.
chapter one
Pairing: Sam & female!Reader
Word Count: 2.2k
Summary: You had always been passionate about music and marketing, so when your final capstone university project is to create an exhibit with a specific muse, your chance encounter with a small local band leads you to an epiphany for the showcase. You never meant to mix work with play.
WARNINGS: Mild swearing, alcohol mention.
Notes: Hi guys! This is my first time posting fanfic for this fandom and I’m kinda nervous lol. This is an intro chapter to what will become a series. I hope y’all enjoy this plot layout, please let me know what you think! My asks are always open to comments, concerns, and suggestions!
It had always been cold in Clark, but never like it was today. You always brought an extra sweatshirt (sometimes a blanket) in the winter, but today it was nice outside, so you didn’t think too hard about it when you showed up in a flannel. The wind outside was warm, a nice 76 degrees that felt like a Californian beach-side haven compared to the 59-degree library. Courses had begun a week ago and being a senior, graduation could not come faster, though you were pleasantly surprised when the senior advisor offered a new capstone course. Opting for what felt like the ‘easier’ option, you decided to capstone in “American Magazines” rather than write a 25-page paper in some nondescript writing seminar. All magazines are is journalism of some sort… and it fits almost too perfectly considering your little hobby blog kickstarted pretty well this concert season.
It started as a way to get your writing out, a way to combine your love of music with your dream of working in music management and social media. Snippets of concert reviews and novice photos taken on your cheap Nikon camera were littered throughout the blog, as well as album reviews and interviews with amateur bands and musicians. A blog is basically an online magazine, right? You sat down in the surprisingly comfy library chair and skimmed the class’ syllabus, “END OF YEAR EXHIBIT” was displayed in bold caps and seemed to be the assignment of the year: an exhibit dedicated to the subject of your choice, paired with a homemade zine to be handed out to spectators at the show.
Subject of your choice… you wracked your mind, flipping through the mental trading card binders of the musicians you’d worked with in the past, you were sure one of them would be up to the idea of being this semester’s muse.

Lecture hall never got better, no matter the course or the people around you. But why would it? It was a lecture hall, but at least your professor seemed nice. Dr. Richards was an older eccentric man who wore his gray hair in a slicked back ponytail. He looked as if he was meant to teach in the fashion department and not in communications, but it made sense as he explained his requirements for the class. After going over the bulk of the syllabus, he went over the end-of-year exhibit in finer detail. It was meant to be a multimedia project where students needed to tie in their overall career goals with, something that reflected what the student had learned in the course as well as their own personality and aspirations. You smiled slightly to yourself, excited about the creative liberties you were being given for the project, and the prospect of being able to design your own exhibit for the public. You hadn’t realized that class ended, and you quickly gathered your things as you rushed to get out, not noticing the tall figure gazing toward you. You looked up and came face to face with your TA for the class.
“Hey, I’m Danny, I noticed you were kinda zoned out for a moment there and wanted to check in,” he chuckled lightheartedly. His hair was done up in what looked like a turquoise claw clip, his curly bangs and front pieces tousled and frizzy. He radiated what could only be described as pure joy, as if he wanted to help in whatever way he could.
“Oh my god, sorry, I do that sometimes, you know, lost in the mind of an artist or whatever, I’m just wracking my brain trying to think about what to do my exhibit on…” You cringed at yourself, “You know what, just ignore me. I’ve seen you around before, actually.” Danny looked surprised, and you could see the wheels in his head turning until his eyes lit up.
“Wait, yeah! I think we have a few mutual friends, small world UMich is. About your exhibit, do you have any ideas so far?”
“Well, I review local musicians and write about their gigs, usually free ones at bars or restaurants. I was thinking about possibly setting something up with maybe a band of students but I don’t really know where to search for one.” You saw Danny’s eyes light up for the second time.
“It’s funny you say that, I have a band and we perform quite a few times a week at The Garage Bar on Church Street, you know the one right?” You nodded as he spoke, a silent yes to his question. “We’re called ‘Greta Van Fleet’. I don’t think my bandmates would mind you coming in for a few practices or gigs, to be honest, I think Josh would love that. Why don’t I give you my number and we can talk about it more later, I’m running late for practice, actually.”
Danny scribbled his number down on a piece of paper and ripped it out of his notebook, handing it to you with a smile and a nod as he rushed out of the hall. You were alone as you gazed down at his hurried scrawl, who the hell is Josh?
•
Thursday night rolled around and you found yourself staring at the mirror, for the millionth time it seemed, deliberating over your outfit. You didn’t care what you wore, really, but you couldn’t help but feel self-conscious all of a sudden, they wouldn’t scrutinize you, right? They’re just a group of young guys- possibly young? Who were you to know if it wasn’t just your TA and a bunch of grandpas? Or maybe dilfs? Who knows, though you semi-wished for dilfs.
You finally settled on a black mini skirt and a plain orange tee with a jacket thrown on top, something safe but still giving the illusion that you might have gave a fuck about your appearance. As you walked out into the brisk autumn air, you shivered and pulled the jacket closer to you, berating yourself for not dressing warmer. It wasn’t too long before you showed up at the address Danny had sent to you a couple of hours prior, accompanied by a few dancing emojis – he was a frequent user of emojis, you had discovered, with the few texts you two had exchanged. You weren’t expecting google maps to take you to a house, maybe a bar or a practice hall of some sort, but it looked like your typical college-aged boys home. Fairy lights which were strung haphazardly over the porch, lawn chairs on the patio, and a turned-over welcome mat greeted you as you rang the doorbell. You could hear the plucking of off-key guitar strings and chatter coming from behind the door, which only heightened your anxiety about this whole evening. You brought along your laptop and camera, hoping maybe to get some off-the-clock practice shots if the band agreed to work with you on the project.
The door suddenly opened and jarred you from your thoughts, a flash of warm light came from inside the house and a curly mop now stood in front of you. Attached to the mess of curls was a bright white smile belonging to a handsome young guy; he couldn’t have been much older than you, 3 years at most.
“Welcome, welcome! You don’t have to stand outside, come in and make yourself at home. We have beer and seltzer in the fridge if you want, or apple juice,” The guy blabbed, ushering you inside the foyer leading into the kitchen and living room.
“Don’t be a dick, she doesn’t want apple juice.” The voice came from beyond the door frame, yelling almost as it berated the man in front of you. As you opened your mouth to speak, almost the exact same motherfucker walked out of the kitchen, “Sorry about Josh, he can be a bit overbearing.”
They had the same look, though this one had long wavy locks and his presence was not as bold, yet he shined as he entered the room. “I’m Jake, and this one is Josh, obviously, I assume youre the girl Danny’s mentioned.” You instantly felt at home, with the yin and yang nature of their contrasting personalities, and you nodded as you looked between the twins.
Josh knocked the back of his hand into Jake’s shoulder, “Lighten up, will ya?”, he turned back to face you. “Let’s go, Danny and Sam are downstairs tuning. Did you need a drink or anything ‘fore we go?”
“Honestly I’m okay, thank you for asking though. Do you have anywhere I could plug in my charger, though?”
“Yeah, just follow me.”
You made your way down the narrow staircase into what felt like a make-shift man cave of sorts, traffic signs, and rock ‘n’ roll memorabilia coated the walls as you entered the dimly lit basement. It smelled of incense, alcohol, and a hint of cologne as the boys ahead of you went straight for their bandmates. There sat Danny, and who you could only assume was Sam. He was hunched over what you thought was a guitar, only it was a light blue, almost green color, something you didn’t usually see. He had long brown hair, brushing his shoulders and wrapped like a halo around his face as his eyes were focused on the strings and his plush lips were mumbling something quietly, too quiet to hear. He seemed to be closest to your age, maybe a bit older, but nothing too crazy. Jake gestured you to the couch, where the outlet was sat directly next to, and you took a seat next to him.
“Nice guitar, I love the color,” you uttered loudly, loud enough to get his attention. He was the only one who hadn’t immediately perked up at your presence, even Danny had greeted you so welcomingly, now occupied with the brothers. This one was seemingly too entranced by the sounds coming out of his instrument as he tuned the strings. At the sound of your voice, he slowly looked up, and you could see he had large, downturned chocolate-colored eyes. He smirked gently, one side of his mouth lifting as he scoffed.
“Thanks, but this is a bass. I understand the confusion though, especially since it is customized. Though, it does look almost brown to me... You don’t get much of those out in the wild.” His eyes quickly scanned your appearance, looking for a comment of his own. “Nice… leaves?”
You glanced down confused by his comment on the color but noticed your tattoo peeking out from under your skirt, “Oh, thank you, they’re berry vines, strawberries actually. You don’t get much of those out in the wild, either.” He chuckled as you smiled to yourself, pleased with your quick wit.
“Well, Berry, it’s nice to meet you. Daniel over here has been talking about you coming over for a week now and I think we’re all a little interested in hearing about this little project of yours.”
“Nicknames already?” Danny chimed in, Sam’s head turning to meet the sound of his voice. “We can talk about logistics later, I have class in the morning so let’s get this shit started.”
The boys all made sounds of agreement and got into position as you looked around and decided to sit on a large purple bean bag chair on the floor, near where Jake was messing around with the pedals next to his feet. It was then that Danny counted them in and Josh’s vocals came in, loud, raw, and powerful, something you didn’t expect to come out of such a small man. The combination of Jake’s electric riffs, Danny’s pounding beat, the smooth and sexy bass lines, and Josh’s voice, you were quite frankly surprised and pleased. When Danny had mentioned a band, you had expected an amateur bunch of musicians trying to mesh their different sounds together, but this band was amazing, sounding as if they had been practicing for years and years together; their chemistry was addicting. As they finished off the song, Josh looked over at you for approval, grinning widely with a sparkle in his eyes really only seen in people who were truly passionate and into their craft. Your only reaction was a dropped jaw.
“That was… insane. Like, I’m blown away to be quite honest, you all work so harmoniously together- how? I mean, you’re all so cohesive.”
“I mean, we’ve been playing together since high school, we got a small following back home because of it but there’s always room to practice.” Jake was so genuine with his responses, probably the most level-headed out of the bunch. You nodded, urging them to tell more. He continued, “It’s been a rollercoaster but we’re looking to reach outside of just local bars and lounges.”
Sam chimed in, “Yeah, I’m kind of sick of college.” he flashed you a smirk, which made your cheeks heat, but you ignored the urge to keep eye contact with him. “Well, I would love to work with you guys this semester… I’ve got good social media skills too if you’d like this to branch outside of academics…,” Even asking the question felt embarrassing to ask, but something inside told you to stick around.
The boys looked around at each other, communicating with their eyes, silently agreeing with nods of approval and shrugs before Josh spoke up, “I think we could swing that.”

The Fine Art of Surfacing; A Very Late Review
Back with a vengeance (and a whole lotta gloves. It’s cold!). I'm extremely ashamed of this; hopefully nobody sees it. Anyways, enough of my yammering. Let’s boogie!
Someone’s Looking At You
Fingers kills it yet again on the keyboard. Would be an excellent song to show to someone with anxiety. When the feds wiretap me, they’ll be hearing this on the line.
7.5/10. Not my favourite song, but it’s pretty damn good. The best part about it is the lyrics.
2. Diamond Smiles
I do not remember Diamond’s smiles. Sorry! What I do remember is the trumpet around the end of the song; that added a fun little kick to an upbeat song about suicide. Which, haven’t we seen that on ATFTT? This is more anthem-like though.
9/10. Listened to this on repeat!
3. Wind Chill Factor (Minus Zero)
By Jove, that intro is strong! Third favourite song on the album. Geldof sounds a bit different here; less staccato than usual. Very funky song, could dance the Robot to it. VERY New Wave. A mystery as to why it’s not an overplayed radio classic.
10/10!!
4. Having My Picture Taken
“Hold it fellas, watch the birdie!”. I originally thought it was beard instead of birdie, which confused the crap out of me. Then again, why the fuck does Geldof have a bird? Best part of it was the guitar. I have a feeling I would’ve hated this in middle school.
10/10.
5. Sleep (Fingers Lullaby)
Apparently Kanye sampled part of this song? Don’t really care about that. Even though this isn’t like the lullabies yo momma sang to you as a baby, I would absolutely fall asleep to this and have dreams of actually being able to read sheet music. This song is excellent! It has this nice repetitive thing going for it, which is really relaxing. The chorus is kind of chanted at you in this hypnotic way (and the vocal harmonies are just pleasant). Relatable subject matter… why can’t I close my eyes and go to sleep.
11/10. I don’t care that the scale only goes to 10! It’s my favourite song off this album.
6. I Don’t Like Mondays
Before I get crucified for this, just remember I gave this song a 9/10 (that is a perfectly good score! Be happy). I just can’t give it a proper ten because of how much it’s been played… and I also associate it with a strange comment about Brenda Spencer. Eugh. Still quite good, and the lyrics make me think.
What even is life? 9/10.
7. Nothing Happened Today
Too true. Percussion knocked it out of the park; started this track off with a bang. It’s got a nice tempo. My favourite part was that bridge; everyone lied to Harry Hooper, the poor sod.
I really need to learn how to describe music better. 10/10
8. Keep It Up
If the “it” they’re talking about is the synth, hell yes! I don’t have much to say about this song other than I enjoy it. Probably not everyones cup of tea.
10/10. Will go into my “General Good Music” playlist.
9. Nice N Neat
Second favourite song on the album. If Sleep is a night song, this should ideally be played mid day. Since I’m real big on theology (as always…) these lyrics gave me a laugh;
We'd take a recipe for religion
And bring it to the theological kitchen
Mix it up to make our own concoction
Real neat groove; gets a 10/10.
10. When The Night Comes
Damn depressing, but it's a good story. Is that acoustic? I can’t tell, my headphones are all messed up. I don’t really have much to say about this song for some reason.
8/10.
11. Real Different
I. Love. B-sides. For some reason I got a notification saying “If the spud fits, wear it” while listening to this (specifically the part where Geldof says ‘stop and turn away’).
12. How Do You Do?
This isn’t similar to the Beatles at all, but I was reminded of them. I feel a little racist towards Brits now? Quite punk rock, rebellious in nature. Feels like it wouldn’t be super out of place on their first album, but I might be wayyyy off base.
10/10. Could (and would) dance to this in a public space.
13. Late Late Last Night
AliasJoeRibidiumPaulø… what were you on? Must’ve been something you ate last night. Okay, enough with my corny jokes. I like this song, but it’s not the best on the album. It’s main redeeming quality is it's lyrics (which I can barely keep up with).
7/10? It’s not bad but I just don’t care about it right now.
Okay… overall album rating: a 9/10! A Tonic For the Troops tops it e-z though.
I think the next album I’ll “review” (a.k.a. stammer on about pointlessly) will be either In The Long Grass or V Deep. Time to go hibernate again.
#Didn't proof read/revise this so if it's incoherent... be still.#Now that I think of it though#these are more just random thoughts. Not really a proper review. I should stop calling it one. Whatever!#the boomtown rats#music shtuff

+x+ new album thoughts:
1. devil by the window -- i’m sorry. i heard the bass line and i was halfway sold, and then the song didn’t fuck up anywhere that much and this is how i’m contractually obliged to like it. one thing that bothers me a bit it’s that it’s entirely in english, their pronunciation is distracting sometimes, but what can you do! it’s kpop, of course there’s english
okay, no, actually it would benefit from one last chorus with some additional Bang. i get that the inhale at the end was probably supposed to be pre-intro to the next song but. stop having songs be silky smooth and barely longer than 3 mins :(
2. sugar rush ride -- oh i see we’re not abandoning the pop-punk (?) thing. good for them, i’m always down for some nice guitars. oh, this track is also kind of light and fresh-- ah, an anti-drop. well. i’m not sure about that, i’m already listening with the volume a bit louder than i normally do and the song still lacks that punch. just release the tension! put some back into those drums, would ya?! and the bass too! the previous track had a nice bass line, but this one seems to only have trace amounts of it. hybe’s musical minimalism in title tracks seems to continue and i’m not a fan, i think
3. happy fools -- i’m... not particularly a fan of bossa nova/-adjacent stuff, and i don’t know the featuring artist. neither the verses nor the chorus had a particularly strong impression on me, like. this is a song and i guess it exists. oh, the featuring artist is a western english-speaking female artist, and i could hear “korea” and “txt” in her rap. ok. literally why though. what does she introduce to the song. honestly txt have had a couple of those collabs with female artists and each of them was like... oaky, but why. how are they special or somehow necessary. like why is this happening. i don’t know. the song is less than 3 minutes long, though, so... moving on
4. tinnitus (wanna be a rock) -- the title was intriguing. the sound is plink-plonky moombahton which i’m not immune to, and the juxtaposition of the title and the sound means i’ll probably have to look up the lyrics. oh, okay, they slipped into the chorus a little bit too seamlessly for me, but i guess if you take hybe’s recent minimalism obsession in consideration, it kinda works for a chill bouncy thing to. well. bounce to. but again, the song is roughly as long as the previous one, and at this point it just seems like lazy music making. this song is like, Nice, in a ‘nothing special, but pleasant to me personally, will listen again when i’m bored’ way. you could make it longer and give it a more lasting impression, it’s not like every second of it is perfect because you’ve worked on it so hard. eh
5. farewell, neverland -- ok, the guitar in the intro has a nice vibe, PLEASE keep it throughout the song, PLEASE. oh, the rhythm is similar, and the guitar indeed is There through the whole song, but Other Instruments Join It and the chorus has an actual impact, and the post-chorus is there and does too! what am i hearing! gasp! electric guitar! jokes aside, the melody has this kind of conflicted, slightly nostalgic feeling to it -- judging by the random english words i’m able to make out, that’s exactly the vibe they were going for. but again, it’s short as fuck.
final verdict -- yeah, aside from the initial “oh there’s a bass line!” pleasant surprise, this album is rather... tame... i can see the three tracks out of five total growing on me even to the point of becoming earworms, but *sigh*. maybe it’s just Back In My Times Things Were Better speaking through me, but i think I liked their more... textured? layered? earlier sound. their current stuff feels too polished and empty, and even if it sounds pleasant, i feel it’s... a bit of a shame to bop to it seriously because of how low-effort it sounds lmao. surprise me every once in a while, maybe?
like... idk, maybe it’s bullshit reaching, but i feel like maybe this kind of producing makes the instrumentals so underwhelming layers and things-happening-wise to... make the vocals pop more? perhaps? but it doesn’t work on me, because these vocals are... well, they are! i’m sure the boys are skilled and i have nothing against them, but these are not voices i’d delight in listening to read a phone book, if you get me. like. everyone in kpop is a skilled vocalist, else they wouldn’t be here. give me music.
tl;dr well i liked 3 out of 5 songs so ★★★☆☆

You deeply groaned as you fluttered your eyes open. This was not a great time to wake up. You really wanted another hour of sleep, but you knew you had work to get done today.
You looked behind you. You smiled at the sight of Wilbur in his sweet slumber, his arm lazily draped over your waist. Wilbur very much loved to be in bed with you. If he could, he would spend all day there, just you in his arms and some soft lofi in the background.
That was something very rare to get. Being a streamer and musician, Wilbur was busy almost all the time and rarely took a day off. Mornings and nights were dedicated to you. However, there were times that you would stream with him, or stop by the office to give him food, but nothing was compared to waking up with him.
“Oh shit,” You whispered, “We’re supposed to do morning vlog today.”
You looked around for Wilbur’s camera, which was no where to be found. You settled on stretching over to nightstand and unplugging your phone. You looked back at Wilbur to make sure he was still sleeping. You could tell he was by the gentle raise and fall of his chest and subtle “Ah-woo”. You just knew that was the perfect way to start the vlog. You recored him for about ten seconds of him doing his ‘not really a snore but definitely something’ and giggled almost the whole way through.
You would think that after living with him for two months and the multiple sleepovers that you’ve had with him, that you would be used to it by now. But even today you still giggled just like you did when you first woke up with him.
You snuck yourself out of bed and made your way to the kitchen. Once arrived you did the intro, “Good morning chat! It is currently about 6:30 in the morning, and as you realize, I am the only one awake. As you saw, Wilbur is still sound asleep and that how it is every morning. So we’re going to vlog our morning routine today, which I promise is way more interesting than the nightly routine vlog. So, Wilbur is literally the best person ever and deserves the world. And his world, besides me of course, is his morning coffee. So I’m going to use our Keurig to get his coffee started.”
You stopped the recording and decided to get some of your creativity out. You weren’t musical like Wilbur and can't draw for shit, so videography was your way of being creative. You set your phone the in the corner and opened up the blind to let a little bit of light through. It still looked basic so you moved your plant to the background, which added the perfect look. You started brewing and hit record.
While that was going, you measured out the creamer and syrup and grabbed your sippy cup for your chocolate milk. No judgement here. We all know chocolate milk tastes better in sippy cups.
The brew came to a slow stop and you grabbed the camera, “Wasn't that a satisfactory angle chat? Now, I am more of an iced coffee person, so in the morning I have water or chocolate milk, and today is definitely a chocolate milk day.” You raised your cup to the camera and fake ‘clinked’ it, cutting the recording when it was closest to the camera. You finished up making Wilbur’s coffee and set it on the living room table.
You looked at the time, 6:50 am, now was a good time to get Wilbur up. You always let his coffee sit out for a little bit, that way he could drink it the second that he woke up. You threw some napkins under your drinks and moved another plant over there. You wanted your place to look aesthetically pleasing, even if it was a little bit staged. You did a transition with your cup, this time now on the table.
“Okay chat, we all now mr. simpbur is a snuggler so we don't have breakfast in the kitchen, instead we share on the couch, that way we can get all of our snuggles in before he has to leave for the office. I have everything set up, normally I would prepare breakfast too, but I feel like cooking with Wilbur this morning. We’ll do this about once a week for some bonding time, so let's go get him up,” You decided to keep recording, just in case Wilbur woke up from your loss of presence.
You creaked the door open, Wilbur was still asleep. He adjusted his body for that he was hugging a pillow, who you assumed was your replacement. You laid down next to him and just took a moment to admire him. It was moments like this that you forgot that you were internet personalities. This was you. This was Wilbur. Both of you living your life without needing to exaggerate yourself. This was Wilbur at his purest form. He was all relaxed, not even aware that he was being recorded.
You scooted closer to him and intertwined your legs with him. You brushed his bangs with the back of your hands and gently placed your lips on your forehead. He stirred a little bit, but not enough to wake him up. You took the pillow from him and wrapped your body around his, “Wilbur, my love, it's about seven, you need to get up.”
You could tell he woke up by him pulling you closer and burying his head only you neck. You gently massaged his head and twirled his curls between your fingers, “Come on Will, I got your coffee made already. We need to start breakfast.”
He shook his head and kissed your shoulder, “Mine.”
You laughed, “Yes Will, and ‘yours’ is hungry, let’s get up and eat.”
He slowly nodded and pulled you closer, “Mmmm... I love you.”
“I love you too, simpbur.”
He snapped his head up at the nickname and saw the camera, “Fuck-that’s today?”
You giggled and detached yourself from, “Say good morning to chat.”
He shook his head and buried it in his pillow out of embarrassment. You stop recording and put your phone on the stand. Just seeing Wilbur all flustered was enough to make you go back to bed. You laid back down with him and pulled him on top of you.
“We’re gonna have to re-record that part,” Wilbur mentioned.
You rubbed his cheek with your thumb, which he happily leaned into, “No bubs, we gotta keep it in. It was a very cute moment.”
He shook his head aggressively, “No! That was embarrassing!”
“Too bad, it’s on my phone so I get to chose what goes in.”
He huffed and grabbed your hand, accepting defeat, “You said you made my coffee?”
You two got up and sat down on the couch. Wilbur took you into his arms the second he took his first sip, his personal way of saying ‘thank you, you’re the best person to ever exist’.
“What are you feeling for breakfast?” You asked.
“You,” Wilbur joked, kissing your temple.
You gently pushed him, “No actually, I really want yogurt, so pick something that goes well with that.”
“Can we just make a fruit plate?”
You excitedly nodded, if it wasn't for Wilbur, you would not be eating healthy. He really made sure that you were going to live as long as he did. Neither of you could live without the other. If something crazy didn't happen to you, you were going to die from a broken heart.
Wilbur grabbed your phone and started recording, “So um, good morning chat, I’ve had some coffee and more awake now. What you just saw- no you fucking didn't. We’re on the sofa right now and we decided on a fruit plate with yogurt this morning, trying to be a little healthier considering we had ice cream at one am last night. So we’re gonna make that off camera, because if you guys get us to six million subs, we’ll do a cooking stream!”
“Oh we are now?” You questioned. “I was never told about this.”
Wilbur laughed and kissed your temple, “Well you know now, that's good enough innit?”
You shook your head and placed your hand over the camera, Wilbur stopped the recording. You go the fruit out while Wilbur prepared the sink for rinsing and knives for chopping.
You made the plate look all nice and took it back to the couch. Wilbur placed his arm back over you and grabbed the remote with is free hand while you centered your phone.
“Okay chat, we’re gonna eat and watch tv for a bit, then you're gonna get ready with us. Wilbur has a test shoot at the office today, so we gotta make him look all pretty and obviously personal hygiene is a must... so yeah, brb.”
You two set up another game show to watch, it sorta became your go to show. Especially because there was no storyline and you could talk when you wanted. This was a pretty chill morning, you two enjoyed each other's presence.
When you finished up, Wilbur took the dishes and you went to the bathroom and cleaned up a little bit. You heard Wilbur go into his closet, so you started recording, “Okay chat, last thing we do before he leaves is actually get ready. Wilbur is getting changed right now so I’m gonna brush my hair out. I can get a little aggressive with the snarls and Wilbur always thinks I'm ripping my hair out so I always do it when he's not around to make sure he doesn't get worried.”
You set the phone in the corner and set it up to record a time lapse. You heard off in distance some light pop type of music, so you knew that Wilbur got his speaker out.
“Are you playing copyrighted music?” You called.
“It’s released Lovejoy!”
You smiled, you always got giddy seeing how happy Wilbur was able to make himself with his own music. You set your brush down and started to wet your toothbrush, Wilbur slid into frame, already jamming out to his own music.
You covered your mouth with your hand stifled your laughter. Wilbur laughed with you and tugged on your waist, trying to get you to dance with him. You aggressively shook your head no, you hated dancing. You would think by now that you would be used to Wilbur and his random dance breaks, but you never came around.
You looked down in shame as Wilbur attempted to get you to spin around. Once you made it clear that you were not in the mood to dance, Wilbur turned down the music and waddle over to the counter.
You grabbed the camera, “If someone wants a very tall British man, you can come get him. Warning: not fun dance outbreaks.”
“Oh come on now, y/n!” Wilbur wrapped his arms around your waist and placed his head on yours, “Stop pretending like you don't like to dance.” “You know I hate dancing,” You reminded him.
“Well chat, apparently I’m not allowed to have any fun in the morning? But anyway, that was a joke, but- we do really have to get ready. Should we do this Disney Channel style?”
You laughed and shook your head, “No, I think I just want to make sure you don't miss your meeting.”
“That’s at nine! We have time! Please let me have fun with you! It’s going to be such a stressful day!” He pouted with the cutest puppy dogs eyes.
There was no way that you could say no to him, “Alright, what fun we having?”
Wilbur said nothing and prepared his toothbrush like yours, “Last one to finish brushing their teeth has to do the dishes tonight.”
You hated dishes. You were winning this one. You didn't even wait for a countdown. You instantly grabbed your toothbrush and turned on the water with lightening speed.
“What?!” Wilbur yelled. “That’s not fair!”
You did your best to bump him away, but it literally did nothing. Both of you were laughing very hard but Wilbur quickly caught up. You both fought with your hands, trying to cup a decent amount water. You both managed to get the water into your mouth and you turned to face Wilbur, it came down to who could rinse the fastest. You two just stared at each other, wishing the water around. You were dead serious. You were not doing the dishes tonight. Wilbur kept flaunting his hands around trying get himself to go faster, which ended up in him completely breaking out in laughter and spitting all over your face. It took you by surprise and all that you could you do was laugh to yourself, you eventually spit the water out in the sink, raising your hands in victory.
“I am so sorry, love!” Wilbur took your hand and guided you into his arms, gently running his hand up and down your back, “I didn't think that would be that hilarious.” “It’s okay,” You laughed and looked back in the mirror. You were completely drenched shoulder up, “It was fun. Better to happen to me than you, you look really nice today for the shoot.” “Thank you,” Wilbur blushed and turned you around, “I think that is enough recording for today. All that we have left to do is leave so... thank you for watching! Subscribe now and remember, cooking stream at six mil! Bye guys!”

Cαrαtlαnd 2022 Ments
Intro Ment:
Evelyn cleared her throat right as the camera panned onto her.
“Hi Carats, I’m Evelyn. If it’s your first time here, Welcome to Caratland. And if it’s your second or third time here, welcome back! Online Carats, with all of your presence, it feels like our family is whole again. It’s super bright out today, and I can see everyone very well. I hope you brought some good sunglasses to protect your eyes for a little while,” she smiled holding her hands above her eyes, looking around at all of the waving carats, in which she waved back.
She clapped her hands together, “It’s the last day and the weather is so perfect out. Let’s have lots of fun today okay!” The sounds of the Sogo drums filled her ears making her smile.
~
The camera had panned over onto Hoshi and he started doing his long ment.
“You know, 10 years are going to fly by and we’re gonna be still standing here and you’re still going to be doing your introduction.” Evelyn laughed alongside the other members cracking jokes.
~
Jeonghan started singing a little part of Dream.
“Wah Jeonghan’s voice is super relaxing to listen to. It’s very heavenly.”
“I think Eunji-a should sing Dream of You for Carats.” Jeonghan smiled over to her, “It the last day today and it’ll make the carats feel warmer inside to hear her vocals.”
Evelyn looked surprised at his sudden comment as the members each cheered her on. She cleared her throat before singing the chorus.
~
“Evelyn dyed her hair grey for Caratland,” Seungkwan walked over to her and grabbed a few strands, holding them up, “Carats, do you like it?”
The Carats banged super hard on the drums and clappers making Evelyn blush.
“It’s a very pretty color. And the way it’s styled is very princess like.” Minghao commented with the others agreeing. Evelyn had then started doing the princess wave.
“It’s Princess Evie.” Mingyu exclaimed, pretending to bow.
“But she’s dressed very edgy?”
“She’s definitely an edgy princess then.”
~
Ending Ment:
It was reaching towards the end of the fan meeting. The air had become cooler as the night went on, and the wind blowing didn’t help the cause either. The members all sat center stage on their benches going down the row for their ending speeches. Seungkwan finished up his speech, looking over to Evelyn and giving her a smile that it was her turn. The camera panned over to her as she breathed in deep, trying her best to calm her emotions. The last day was always the hardest, no one wanting to say goodbye.
“Did you have fun today ? Evelyn smiled, looking around at the bundled up fans banging on the sogo drums, “Yeah, me too.”
“Online carats, did you have fun today?” Evelyn looked directly into the camera for the online viewers, giving a big smile and turning her mic towards it, “I could hear your excitement all the way here on stage.”
Gathering up her thoughts quickly, Evelyn took another breath before getting into her speech,
“I’m so glad that the weather decided to play nice today and give us this last day worry free of anything bad happening. These pasts 3 days have flown by a little too quickly for my liking, and I think it’s unfair that time is allowed to go by so fast. If it were possible, I’d travel back in time to do this all over again. I’ve missed you all so much, and even though it’s a little different circumstances that normal, it’s still nice to see you all again after so long. Thank you for coming to see us in this cold weather, and I’m sorry you had to suffer through the cold and rain the past three days. I hope none of you end up sick and are staying healthy the best that you can. And as for our online carats, It’s nice that you were able to join us today. I know most places it’s probably early in the morning and you haven’t slept all night so you must be getting exhausted. Make sure to get some sleep afterwards, and take care of your health as well. Believe me when I say that we really could feel all of your energy and love through the screen throughout the whole night , so thank you so much for sticking around with us for these past 4 hours!”
Evelyn held the mic away from her mouth, biting her lip in the process. Even though she wasn’t looking at them, she could easily tell that members were looking at her. She swallowed the lump that was sitting in her throat, pleading for her tears to retreat back into her eyes.
“I’m never one that’s going to lie to you, so I’ll tell you the truth about my condition today. I woke up this morning and my body wasn’t feeling in the best condition. I thought it would go away by the time practice came around, but during practice today, I felt that I was close to fainting. I managed to pull myself together and push through to finish rehearsals.”
Evelyn could feel her face getting more red as she was slowly losing the the battle to keep herself together. Fresh tears began to roll slowly down her face as she put her head down to not show anyone that she was in fact crying. Wonwoo had grabbed some tissues and handed them to her as he placed his hand on her back, rubbing slowly hoping to calm her down at least a little. She wiped her eyes and picked her head back up.
“I didn’t know when the next time that we would see each other again after today would be, so I didn’t tell anyone my condition or let it be shown because I didn’t want to worry anyone,” her voice cracked slightly, sniffling to regain some composure back.
“I’m so sorry that I let my body get to that point. I promise to work harder and give you better performances in the future. I’m sorry to the members because I didn’t tell you about my conditions, but I just really didn’t want to let anyone down or make you worry about me.“
“Eunji, don’t cry,” Jeonghan called into the mic, leaning forward to get a better view of her, “It’s okay.”
“You would never have let us down Eunji.” Seungcheol spoke into the mic, “I’m sad that you didn’t tell me about you being sick. But you’re our maknae, so we’re always going to worry about you.”
Dabbing at her eyes again, Evelyn let out a breathy laugh at Seungcheol’s comment. She looked in both directions at all of the members, giving them all a quick smile.
“Some of the members families are here watching us today, so it was great seeing everyone after a long time. Unfortunately, my grandmother couldn’t be here today, but I know she says hello to everyone and that she’s watching at home.“ Evelyn look into the camera and giving it a wave, directed towards her grandmother.
“I have hope that we can meet again together real soon. I’ll be looking forward to that day! We’re always gonna be a Seventeen that you can be proud of and a group that you can call your home. I promise we’ll work harder to show you even an better Seventeen. I love you carats forever! Until next time! Eviehae!” Evelyn held up her free hand to her damp face, and pressed a half heart to her cheek with a smile.

The quote from Shirley made me think of the one press conference thing where a guy (there always has to be some ‘wacky’ guy asking dumb questions at these things) asked Charlie if he had a business card. Charlie seemed annoyed and said “this is my business card” and pointed at his face. I thought good for you Charlie! It was nice to see a moment of ‘I know who I am’ confidence.
After a little sleuthing, I found it in a documentary about The Bigger Bang tour:
It is a funny interaction. He dealt with enough wackiness/idiocy on a regular basis, he wasn't putting up with any more. But what you said is true, it's a moment of 'I know who I am' confidence, and those are nice to see because they were quite rare with him.
He's one of those people where I guess you have to make a distinction between self-respect and self-confidence. Charlie had an immense amount of self-respect, something that showed itself in how he chose to live. He had a very certain image of who he wanted to be, which wasn't some kind of hedonistic rock god, and he conducted himself in accordance with that image (loyal to his wife, well dressed in a classical way, devoted to jazz, etc) even though it made him stick out in some ways.
At the same time, he didn't have a massive amount of confidence in his own abilities. Charlie was the first person to insist that he was "just the drummer", wasn't a great drummer at that, and that the band could fire or replace him easily. And Charlie was absolutely the only person of the four of them that believed that. It's sort of ironic that they fell into that dynamic, because based on the history of the band, it really should have been the other way around. They knew they were getting something extraordinary with him, he was the one taking a chance to go with them.
This is probably a slightly boring detour into history, but it's interesting to note that Charlie's ultimate drum hero was a guy called Dave Tough. Tough was an American swing and jazz drummer who played from the late '20s to 1948, and if you read interviews with almost any musician who worked in that period, they're full of praise for him. Which would come as a surprise to some people, as he's been forgotten relative to figures like Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich, famous for their long solos and big kits. As a drummer and a man; "Dave was the single most musical drummer that I've ever known...a sweet man, a gentle man" according to Artie Shaw. He was an extremely thin little man who dressed sharply every day, loved to make art and wanted to be a writer, and hated taking solos. Ultimately, he drank himself to death because, among other things, he felt he wasn't a good enough drummer.
I think one of the most beautiful things about the story of the Stones, if you can call it that, is that they worked so very hard to try to make sure that Charlie never felt the way his hero did. They did everything they could to give him confidence, always.
There's a striking moment during an interview from 2013 where Mick is explaining why Charlie couldn't play with the Stones for their Marquee Club gig in 1963, and, with Charlie sitting right next to him, he just casually tosses this out:
Likewise, there's a little throw-away line in an intro Mick did for Charlie a few years ago that strikes the same chord. He refers to Charlie as Max Roach, who was another one of Charlie's heroes and a highly respected and technically talented bebop drummer. It was Mick's way of saying 'we don't care how mediocre you think you are, we think you're as extraordinary as this guy who was one of the two or three greatest jazz drummers ever':
Ronnie was just the same:
It bears noting here, in relation to Charlie's comment about being replaceable, that the Stones have made a very conscious choice not to replace him. This is how Keith put it: "You took Charlie, everything fell apart, and to be able to transition this thing and also feeling Charlie's presence in a way via Steve...[was important]." Steve is filling in for Charlie, and he's doing it precisely because he was a close student of Charlie's style, so through him they can retain their link to Charlie when they play.
Of course, Keith was Charlie's biggest fan and booster. Like Mick, Keith took all the joy in the world in grabbing him and making him try to see how talented he was via the thousands of people screaming their admiration for him:
He could basically give a graduate level lecture on why Charlie was amazing, and would do it for any journalist who would listen:
And he did everything humanly possible to give Charlie the confidence he needed to get out there and kill as a band leader. I know we've all seen this picture:
It's Mick and Keith coming out together to support Charlie's big band premiere at Ronnie Scott's in 1985. But what you discover, if you read the reviews of all of the various bands, quartets, tenets, etc. that Charlie fronted over the years, is that Keith came to every premiere no matter where it was, and every New York performance. In fact, he and Patti flew from Jamaica specifically to see Charlie start a residency at the Blue Note in 1986. But if you look at those pieces, you'll also see a lot of stuff like this:
"Mr. Watts is as modest as can be. He waited until nearly the end to introduce the musicians; while he was presenting the bassist Dave Green, touchingly, as ''my childhood friend,'' Keith Richards, sitting at a table with a retinue, a poodle and an ever-lighted cigarette, heckled in mock surprise, 'You have one?'"
That wasn't Keith being mean to Charlie. A music critic actually discovered the real reason. Jazz band leaders are basically required, in addition to introducing their players, to do patter between songs and interact with the audience. Charlie was shy, both hated public speaking and thought he was dismally bad at it. So Keith would heckle him throughout a performance in order to make Charlie feel like he was the only person there, and like everything was safe and comfortable.
Anyway, this is far too long, but yeah, Mick, Keith, and Ronnie knew (and know) they had something singular in Charlie Watts, and they're still out there trying to show Charlie just how special he was:
#sorry that this is painfully long#but all the nine billion ways Mick and Keith and Ronnie tried to give Charlie confidence make me feel some kind of way#a band that's really a family#the rolling stones#charlie watts#keith richards#mick jagger#old married band#ronnie wood#the married trio#middle aged married band#dave tough#anonymous#ask response

Summary: You begin your first year at a prestigious university, set out on achieving your academic goals when a series of men step into your life that change the way you view the definition of love.
Part Two
Warnings: none in this chapter
Word count: 2.2k
After a moment of gathering your thoughts, you open your eyes to see other students begin to filter into the large auditorium. The little wooden desks that flip out from below the seats force people to squeeze past each other and give awkward sorries. Coming from calc, you thankfully don’t have to do the awkward shuffle as you came straight from a nearby building. While watching the students trickle in, you notice that many hold coffee in their hands and you suddenly are incredibly jealous… that guy from your last class wasn’t wrong in his assumption of your night owl status.
You sigh, and pull out your laptop to pull up the syllabus for the class. You were slightly nervous for this class, as it was completely out of your comfort zone. You hadn’t yet settled on a major, so you were knocking out some general classes while you were a freshman. And now, you were sitting in an Intro to Composition class to fulfill your creative work requirement. You really didn’t have experience with music in any formal sense, but you always loved to listen to music as you did basically anything. You found that music helped make the more unpleasurable bits of life more bearable. And the good bits, well, they always seem to have a good beat behind them too.
While you begin to look at some of the upcoming projects and their due dates, you feel the seat below you shift as someone occupies the seat next to you. When you glance up, you first see that since you pulled your laptop out, the lecture hall had quickly filled up. Your eyes dart over to your new seat buddy, and you can’t help but feel your eyes widen a bit. It was a boy with a slight build, but definitely a powerful aura. From your view, the sharpness of his jawline coupled with his soft looking cheeks was enough to inspire Michelangelo himself, you thought. While he was bent over slightly pulling out his desk, you shifted your eyes to look at his. He had soft eyes, and you could just barely tell he added a bit of a peach shadow and mascara to his look. Framing his face was inky black hair that was gelled to perfectly hang just to the edges of his dark brows.
Not wanting to get caught staring, you drag your eyes away from him and back to your laptop. You felt heat rise to your cheeks and willed it to recede --- you’ve had enough of embarrassing yourself today, you thought. Why oh why God, did you send freaking male models to your university, and not only that, but make them attend the same classes as you!
You quickly snap out of your thoughts as you hear a voice come from close to your right side. Eyes going from your laptop to the speaker, you realize it’s the boy next to you that spoke.
“Hey, just so you know I think your bag is caught on the chair, and looks like it’ll spill…”
His voice is more light and melodic than you anticipated from his angular features, but you don’t really fully process the thought before you realize that yes, your bag is precariously hanging from the edge of the chair between you, and it looks like your notebook and pens are about to end up scattered across the lecture hall. You gasp and grab your bag before it dumps, and lift the strap to untangle it.
“Oh my God, thank you so much, I’m sorry!” Your words rush out of your mouth as you zip the bag to prevent further disaster. How embarrassing, you groan to yourself internally.
He lets out a tinkling giggle, “No worries, happens to the best of us.” Said with a smile, he makes you feel better about the awkward situation almost immediately.
You smile back at him, “I suppose that’s true”. His grin widens a bit at your reply, and you notice his eyes squinch up to the point where they seem to disappear a bit, which you have to admit is incredibly endearing.
“My name’s Jimin!”
“Y/n. Nice to meet you!” Your smile gets larger at his introduction, it’s nice to be making a friend in a class that you already feel out of your depth in, and not to mention one that is as kind and not at all bad to look at.
“You too! So, what year are you? I’m a second year.” His smile never left his face.
“Oh, I’m only a first year actually!” You hated having to tell people you were a new student, honestly, but you kept your smile hoping he wouldn’t tease you too hard for it.
“Aw, you’re just a baby! Don’t worry, sunbae will take care of you!” His smile definitely had a cheshire quality to it now.
“Is that a promise sunbaenim?” You smirked back at him. While your words were formal, you were quick to pick up his flirty nature and turn it around on him. You saw his eyebrow lift in amusement at the subtle double entendre, and just as he was about to respond, a much louder voice cut him off from the front of the hall.
“Good morning everyone. Welcome to Intro to Composition. I am your professor, Doctor Choi. To my side here is this class’s learning assistant, Yoongi.” At this he swings his arm around to gesture to a boy giving a flat smile and nodding his head in greeting, his hands in his front pockets in a kind of forced relaxed stance.
“He is a fourth year student and is here to answer any questions you may have about the class material, as this is a rather large class.” The professor continues on, but you only give it partial attention, half because of already reading the syllabus, and half because you were getting a good look at the LA he introduced.
Yoongi was standing towards the wall of the auditorium, seemingly not wanting to be the center of attention. He wouldn’t have pulled your attention so much if it wasn’t for his gorgeous feline-like features that gave him an elegance, despite his slightly awkward demeanor. The glasses perched on his nose and the dark bangs swooped gently over his forehead gave beautiful contrast to his pale skin and pink lips. The silver hoops in his ears that reflected the overhead fluorescents gave him more of an edgy vibe, and it seemed to suit him well.
As it seems, Jimin thought so too. You turned to glance at your new friend to see him eyeing the LA you yourself was just examining. You watched him pull in one of his plush lips to pull it lightly with his top teeth. The quick action made you lift your brow in amusement. The introverted LA appeared to have a fan club in you and Jimin. After a quick glance around the room, you saw most of everyone beginning to type notes or watch your professor with way more attention than you or Jimin were giving him.
At this, you quickly refocused on the lecturer. Lord knows you need to pay attention to do well in this class with the zero experience you had with the material.
----
75 minutes later, the distinct sound of students shuffling as they put away their things and exit the room rings out. You and Jimin follow suit.
“What do you think of the first project that he introduced today? I’m a little nervous to be honest.” You look up from your bent over position to see Jimin’s eyebrows slightly furrowed as he expresses his concern.
“Yeah, me too. I have absolutely no idea what I’m doing with this stuff so it’ll definitely be a learning process.” Slipping into a conversation about the class was completely natural to you two. It seemed you two clicked as friends right off the bat.
“Tell me about it. I’m a freaking dance major, not a music major!” He let out a grown and tipped his head back as you both walked together out of the lecture hall.
“My advisor recommended this course to me because she said that some dance majors find it useful to learn about music construction, because it can help them be better at moving to the music. And because I tend to focus on contemporary, it makes sense. I’m just worried about not doing well in the class itself.” As he spoke, his face slipped into a cute pout.
His pout made you giggle, which you tried holding back behind your hand but he heard you before you were able to.
“What is so funny? Is my life struggle really that comedic to you hoobae?” He couldn’t hide the smile on his face, knowing how dramatic he was being. The slight giggle in his tone gave him away too.
“Of course not, I would never belittle your struggles, sunbae. You must have it so hard. Dancing requires an immense amount of brainpower, I don’t know how you are able to walk around with how big your brain is!” You widen your eyes for dramatic flair as you fight your lips from quirking up.
He stops dead in his tracts, and turns to you with his eyes nearly bulging out of his head at your sarcastic reply.
“Ya! Kids these days show no respect for their elders!” He bumps his hip into yours after catching up to you, “I’ll have you know I was class president for nine years in school! And valedictorian! And this is how I get treated!”
You make a noise of surprise in the back of your throat and turn to him. “Were you really, sunbae? That’s amazing!” His easy-going attitude definitely didn’t leave you with the impression that he was that dedicated to his studies.
Now slightly sheepish, he shrugs. “Yeah, it’s true. I was a model student back then.”
Looking forward, he gives a bit of a bitter smile to himself. “You are wondering why I became a dance major, I imagine.”
Sensing the slight sensitivity to the topic, you shake your head as you answer, “Well, who am I to judge who does what major when I can’t even decide on one for myself?” You give him a shy smile.
By this point, you were both strolling down the brick path connecting the buildings of campus together, the bite of winter still remaining in the wind that blows your hair off your face on the otherwise sunny day.
He turns to look at you, with a slightly more evaluative gaze. You only hold eye contact for a second before moving your eyes forward again, trying to avoid blushing under his attention.
“You have time. Don’t force yourself into a path that others make for you.” His face was contemplative, and it seemed like he might have been speaking from personal experience.
“That’s good advice sunbae. Maybe your brain really is super big.” Your attempt to make him smile again works, and he lightly pushes your shoulder.
“Brat!” You can’t help but to let out a loud giggle, to which he lets out his own.
Seeing the street you needed to turn on for your next task of the day, you go to say goodbye to Jimin. “Well, this brat has to go buy groceries, so she’ll see you later.” You go to turn away, but before you can, he grabs your hand.
“You’re just going to leave your new friend without giving him a way to contact you? What if he has some pressing composition questions, huh? What is he to do then?” The teasing tone makes you smile.
“Well, if I remember correctly the LA you were checking out earlier is at your disposal sunbae.” He sputters for a couple seconds, pink coming to his cheeks making your smile widen, taking pleasure in catching him off guard.
“Okay, but you can’t tell me he isn’t yummy y/n!”
At this, you let out a cackle and bend over from the force of your laugh. You didn’t expect his answer, but you did have to agree with him. That LA, Yoongi his name is you think, definitely is yummy. He is gorgeous in an understated way.
After you finish laughing, you relent. “Okay, I’ll give you that. I’ll spare you the embarrassment of asking the yummy LA your dumb questions. Hand me your phone”.
He pulls his phone out of his canvas tote, holding his laptop and what looks like a textbook. You quickly type in your contact information, and hand it back to him.
“I appreciate your pity on my poor soul, y/n.”
“It’s more pity on Yoongi’s soul, actually.” You have to raise your voice as you are already walking away as you reply, your head turned over your shoulder. Your smile is met with a shake of his head and a tongue sticking out in your direction.
You laugh as you continue on towards the grocery store, happy that you were able to make such a good friend on just the first day of classes. Who knows what the rest of the semester has in store for you, if this is just day one, you think to yourself. Only time will tell.

Courage My Love// Semi Eita
Pairing: Semi Eita x Reader
Summary: You like Semi and come up with a plan to confess to him, unfortunately it takes a turn. You meet again a couple years later by chance.
Chapter Seven: Take What You Want
Series Masterlist•<Previous•Next>
“Are you done with the eyeliner? I need it,” Izumi asked Haruka as everyone was getting ready on the bus.
“Stupid. Fucking. Boot. ZIP UP!” Yui yelled in frustration as she yanked on her zipper that had gotten stuck on itself.
“Yui, be careful-“ you started only to witness them accidentally hit their forehead.
“Goddamnit!”
“Yui got a boo boo already,” Haruka sighed before handing the eyeliner to Izumi.
“Poor Yui,” you said rubbing her forehead to which Yui attempted to bite as a joke. “Ooooo feisty, let’s save that for the set, alright babe?” Yui got up and took hold of your ears gently and you did the same. Giving each other a toothy grin you started shaking each other’s heads and making a random sound but you decided to mess with her and let your forehead tap hers. Yui let out a yelp as you let go and ran off the bus to get away from her wrath.
“Y/n!”
“Not here right now! Please leave a message!” Yui was probably the person you were closest to in your band which meant she was the one that had to put up with your bullshit while you put up with hers.
“I’m gonna getcha! And then I’m gonna hitcha!”
“No you’re not!” Running into the venue you were trying to find a place to lose her until you saw Won’t Regret and decided to talk to them instead after realizing the time. “Hey, boys,” you greeted.
“Hey,” they all greeted back.
“You look really good tonight,” Ranmaru said to spite Semi.
“Boo! She does, doesn’t she?” Yui asked as she wrapped her arms around your torso only to move your body side to side with her like a penguin.
“Thanks! You guys look good too,” you said taking note of their ensemble.
“Thank you,” Ranmaru said, looking over at Subaru.
“Gotta impress the crowd, ya know?” Subaru said before stretching his arms upwards to show off the muscles he’s gained from drumming over the years.
Your eyes grew in size taking in Subaru’s form only to grow wider when taking in Ranmaru’s, who was bigger than Subaru due to him working out, when he started rolling his shoulders. Semi took notice of your reaction and knew what his band mates were doing the moment they first complimented you but they didn’t have to go this far. “Hey! You guys should probably start prepping your stuff on stage to make sure it sounds good. The guy is signaling for you.”
“Yeah! Let’s go!” Jiro said wanting to help his leader out. He walked behind Ranmaru and Subaru’s backs and gave them a slight push so they could start walking. The two were about to complain before the took in Semi’s glare. When they got to the edge of the stage they fist bumped knowing they accomplished their goal only to hear the crowd scream because they thought the show was gonna start.
“That’s literally the funniest part about performing live,” you stated causing Semi to ask you ‘what was’ while looking confused.
“Them being so excited that they’ll literally scream just by seeing someone get on the stage, even if it’s just a tech guy,” Yui answered.
“Or when the lighting changes! The room just gets a little darker for a second and all of a sudden someone shrieks which just cases a chain of other people doing the same while others laugh,” you added on.
“It’s cool seeing them get so excited. Gets me excited,” Semi said, looking longingly to the crowd.
“I gotta go piss. I’ll be back!” You told them, excusing yourself to go find the restroom. After walking around with no luck you eventually decided to ask a staff member to point you in direction of the bathroom.
Sometime during your search you could hear Won’t Regret start playing their set and when you finally made it to the comfort of the stalls, Semi was already at the second verse of the first song. When you felt it time you were ready to get up you heard a voice belting out the bridge.
“Rage!
I'm the bad guy, I'm the nice try
I'm the typical bitch with the rage
On my face
I'm the goddamn beast of the goddamn pride”
Your face grew warm from the raw emotion you could feel from the sound. After washing your hands you sprinted back to where you left Yui at side stage. She turned around as you were approaching and looked at you with wide eyes.
“Was that him?” You asked while pointing at Semi. The song had ended and he started introducing the band to the crowd.
Yui with the same stunned expression nodded her head before speaking. “Dude, this mother fucker got lungs.”
“It wasn’t Jiro or Ranmaru? Even Subaru?” You continued still not believing it was your old friend that could do that.
“It was him. Has he always been able to do that?”
“No! Where’s his guitar?”
“I don’t know. He performed the song without it. He’s something else. It’s crazy.”
“Maybe he took over the vocal role and left the guitar to just Jiro...” you wondered.
“Alright let’s keep the night going. This next song is called Girlfriend,” Semi spoke into the mic. Ranmaru started leading them into the song with his bass and Jiro and Subaru followed.
As they were playing the intro, Semi licked his upper lip before taking a deep breath and started singing. With every word he sung he nodded his head along with the music either up and down, back and fourth, or side to side; whichever way he felt was best for the moment. He would bring his mic stand closer to himself and then pull it away so he could take quick breaths. When he got to the pre chorus he started bouncing his right leg to match the instruments as he head banged along.
You were feeling as if this was a completely different person from sound check. He wasn’t as stiff as he was before, he was actually getting really into it.
At the chorus he grabbed the mic off its stand and started walking closer towards the crowd which made them start pushing against the barricade. Backing away to get ready for the second verse, he made his way over to Jiro who was on his on his left and rubbed the back of his hand on his cheek before proceeding to go over towards Ranmaru on the other side of the stage to boop his nose. Both gestures made some people in the crowd scream which you and Yui found funny.
Hopping to the beat of the repeating pre chorus into strutting along with the chorus, Semi made his way back to his mic stand and put the microphone back into its holder. At the bridge his voice got softer and he was swaying lightly side to side but as it progressed he leaned forward with the mic stand until it was almost on the ground only to gradually come back up while rolling his shoulders backwards.
Using both hands to hold the bottom of the mic that was still on the stand, Semi belted out the final verse that led into the ending of the song. He used both his hands to run his hands down his face into raising his hands to show his index and thumb fingers were connected while his other fingers were pointed upwards. He then pointed at the crowd only to then use his hands to make an hourglass shape. Ending the song by putting one hand on his chest and the other on the mic, he pulled the stand to the left side of his head so he could catch his breath. The crowd immediately started cheering and screamed even more when he used the bottom of his shirt to wipe his forehead.
“Girly,” Yui started, “I ain’t gonna lie to you, but that’ll make your pussy throb.”
“Yui!” You laughed not expecting those words to come out of your best friend after what you both had just witnessed. “Girl, I was literally about to say that made my pussy throb,” you responded to finish the meme.
“Is he single?” She asked in a joking matter.
“Yui!”
“Y’all better not be referring to Jiro,” Izumi said which made Haruka hit her on the arm. She looked at you two with a panic in her eyes which you guys responded with a smirk.
“Oh? Does our baby of the band have a crush?” You started.
“Does our little drummer girl like their little guitar hero?”
“I hate you guys” Haruka said as she crossed her arms and pouted.
You all put your arms around her instead of continuing to tease her and continued watching Won’t Regret perform. Some of the songs really blew you guys away. Each song had something different to say and even if you couldn’t relate to the songs personally, you could emphasize with them. At one point you had tears in your eyes because one song had hit Yui too close to home. Taking note of the time, you realized their set was almost done and you needed to do your warm ups so you led the girls to your green room.
“They’ve grown so much,” you started, crossing your arms over one another to stretch.
“I mean, they’ve been playing for years so it makes sense but Jesus didn’t they just recently get signed?” Yui asked, holding the back of foot behind her to her butt one at a time.
Izumi sat on the ground with her legs spread out and placed her hands in the middle to stretch before speaking. “Yeah, with that talent they should’ve been signed years ago.”
“I guess luck wasn’t on their side up until now,” Haruka responded while doing lunges.
On stage, Semi could feel the rush of adrenaline within him. He was on a high performing live with his band mates and he couldn’t be happier. He loved showing off and seeing you and your band mates watch him for a while only fueled him more, not to mention his band mates and the crowd did as well. He put out so much energy and was lucky that the crowd gave it back because many crowds don’t. Most people just stand and watch with a bored expression on their face during the opening band because they’re only here for the headliner.
“Thank you so much again! We’re Won’t Regret and we’ll be at our merch table once we get off stage. The night is still young so I hope you’re not tired yet and are excited for Courage My Love!” Semi spoke, resulting in the crowd hollering at the mention of your band. “Wow, you guys really like them. But what about One Ok-“ More screaming started before he could even finish speaking. “-Rock. I didn’t even finish saying their name!” Semi laughed. “You guys were a beautiful crowd. Thank you for your time and being the first people to ever hear us live in the US. We’ll meet you at the merch table!” Getting off stage the boys received so much applause they couldn’t help but look back and wave goodbye.
“That was amazing!” Jiro started once they were off stage.
“That was the best show I think we’ve ever played,” Subaru added, pinching his shirt and moving it so he could get some cool air.
“Good job, guys,” Ranmaru spoke, putting his bass down in its case.
“I’m excited to meet some of them,” Semi said.
Meeting some people after the show was a new experience for them this time. Back home when they met people, the majority of them were people they could recognize because of the amount of times they’d seen each other where here they’re in a completely different country. Everyone was new.
Not many people were lined up at the table, probably a good fifteen people were, which they assumed was because not everyone wanted to risk giving up their spot in the crowd.
“H-hi,” a girl with dyed blue hair stuttered as she approached the table. “Could you sign my book?” she asked, opening her composition note book to a blank page.
“Of course!” Jiro responded with a smile. Semi and Jiro had the best English so they did the majority of the talking while Ranmaru and Subaru would responded whenever they felt comfortable.
“Could I also get a picture?” she asked nervously.
“Yes,” Ranmaru, answered enthusiastically.
The guys posed behind the merch table while the girl stood in front of it and one of her friends took the picture.
“Thank you for hanging out with us,” Semi told them.
“Have a good day,” Subaru added, smiling and giving them a nod to which the new fan gave back.
The boys continued talking to the people that were in line for them and ended up staying there to watch your set from a distance. When your set was done they got up and ran to the bus so they could take a quick shower, Semi going first since he had to go back on stage.
Your band met with your fans after your set as well and left once On Ok Rock started to perform so you could shower as well.
When you were done you found Semi standing side stage watching Taka and his band perform. “Hey,” you started, surprising your old friend when he heard your voice.
“Hey,” he responded.
“Proud of you. You guys were incredible to watch.”
“I could say the same to you. I didn’t know you had that much energy in you.”
“Don’t worry, I’m still lazy. The stage is where I really let myself bloom. I love it,” you told him honestly.
“Well, I’m glad you found your safe Heaven.”
When Taka announced that they were playing the final song, you and Semi stopped talking to pay attention to your cue to start getting on stage after one of the staff members handed you wireless mics. Semi took the lead and walked to the center of the stage when his part started only for you to follow when it was time for the duet. You continued your singing since the second chorus was assigned to you. Semi and Taka backed up to give you some space to have center stage but when it was over you and Semi crossed each other to switch positions. He sang the part that led into the bridge only to switch places with you again and then walk over to the left side of the stage. Taka stayed in the middle and you made your way over to the right side. As Taka sang the last chorus of the song you and Semi did your best to interact with the crowd before standing up to walk towards the middle of the stage while alternating lines. Taka sang the second to last line by himself and then you and Semi joined him to sing the last one together to end the night.
You both stood with an arm around Taka’s shoulders as he had his over yours and Semi. When the song was over, you and Semi moved to get off stage but Taka kept a hold on you both and spoke into the mic, thanking the crowd, your bands, and everyone else that helped make the show possible. He had you all bow together before turning and waiting for his band mates to come over so they could take a group photo with the crowd behind them.
Getting off the stage Taka thanked you for your performances tonight before letting you both go to your respective buses to relax and get ready for the next day.
“Welcome back,” Haruka yawned when you appeared.
“Hey. Is Izumi making curry?” you asked.
“You know it!” Izumi responded, following your tradition of her cooking her favorite curry on the first day of tour.
“I can’t wait,” Yui spoke, tired from jumping around. Taking a seat next to her on your small lounge couch, you rest your head on her shoulders and let your eyes close as you waited for Izumi to finish dinner.
Laying in his bunk after a long night, Semi couldn’t sleep. His mind was clouded with how the first night went. He was proud of himself and his band mates for doing really well their first night. They performed just like they usually did and didn’t hold anything back which made them surprise themselves. He honestly thought at least one of them, mostly himself, would’ve messed up. Eventually letting his mind wander a little, he thought of you.
He’s seen you perform on stage through his phone screen but never live in person. You were all smiles on stage moving your body along with the music while also never missing a beat. You were literally a pro. He also enjoyed watching you interact with the crowd and seeing you change your attitude when talking about certain topics regarding your music, most of them being about feminism, but other topics as well. He felt like he could watch you perform for hours and never get sick of it. He just wanted to listen to you.
Another thing he realized is that he would love to sing a song with you. The duet you both shared was probably his favorite part of the night because of the harmony he could hear through his headpiece was crystal clear since the majority of the crowd was blocked out. It was pure bliss to him.
He could still feel an attraction to you but he knew better than to jump on it because who knows if you still felt the same. On top of that you both decided to start anew instead of jumping into where you left off. He had to take things slow and see.
a/n: I wrote 90% of this all this morning all because I couldn’t get the songs out of my head. The first song Won’t Regret sings is another song by Badflower and it’s called Wide Eyes. I’ve been obsessed with Badflower since December like I basically listen to them daily they’re sooooo good. Also the song that made the girls emotional was Daddy by the same band.
I basically headcanon Won’t Regret as Badflower like I legitimately believe songs like theirs are what Semi’s band are like. Also if I remember correctly I’m pretty sure this hc is what led me to write this story. This is a long ass authors note oops sorry I just adore Badflower

no service (gbd)
the boys do their first no tech challenge since you and grayson get together, and though they make it, something goes terribly wrong at home
word count: 5k
warnings/tags: angst, worried!grayson, hurt!y/n
feel free to send in requests! i’ll write most things! hope you enjoy :)
Your POV:
“I dunno, I just have a weird feeling about this one.” Grayson’s fingers were twisting and untwisting the hem of your shirt, his nerves evident as you laid next to him in bed.
“Gray you’re gonna be fine, it’s just like before. You’ve got the van, and you’ve done survival stuff. Everything is gonna work out. I am gonna miss you though,” you gave him a sad smile.
Since you’d started dating, you’d been attached at the hip. You still had an apartment of your own, but if you were honest you needed to just bite the bullet and sell it - you practically lived with the twins, and you wouldn’t have it any other way. But that also meant that this was going to be the first long-ish stretch that you weren’t with each other.
“It’s just 7 days baby, it’ll go by so fast.” Now he was comforting you, of course.
“You’re gonna have the best time, I can’t wait to see the video when you get home.”
“I’d send you pictures, but you know we won’t have our phones,” he sighed, running a finger along your jawline. “Not being able to see this face all week is gonna suck.”
You blushed deep red, warming his fingertips before you pulled away and crawled across the bed.
“Hey, where ya goin’?” Grayson pouted, but you ignored him for a second, going over to the dresser where you kept some of your clothes full time. You reached down, pulling out the little album that you’d been making as a gift for Grayson down the road. You pulled out one of your favorite pictures; from one of the first weeks that you’d been dating, it was the two of you with the LA skyline in the background, with you looking up at him as he smiled.
“Here, take this with you.” You handed him the photo. “I know E will probably give you shit, but just hide it somewhere. Make sure you bring it back though, that one’s my favorite.”
“I love you,” he responded, but you barely heard it, because at that exact moment Ethan was banging on the door and yelling “GRAY! C’mon it’s time to go!”
“And i’m going to kill my brother,” he groaned, reaching out and pulling you to him tightly, falling back on the bed. You landed on top of him, and his lips were on yours before you could say anything. He kissed you roughly for a minute, a bit of urgency there as he knew you weren’t going to be able to do this again for a while. Ethan knocked on the door again, and you felt Graysons arms tighten as he rolled over, putting you underneath him
“Go Gray, before he beats the door down,” you teased, pushing gently on his chest.
“I could just stay here with you,” he countered, raising an eyebrow.
“Go,” You giggled, pushing harder.
“Fine, fine,” he grumbled, kissing you again before getting up. “Alright E, I’m coming!”
You followed him to the door where Ethan was standing in the doorway.
“Finally get him to stop crying and leave?” E asked.
“Oh shut up,” you teased, pushing on his chest so you could get by. He followed you, slinging an arm around your shoulders as you headed out to the van, which you knew was already packed.
You stayed out of the shot as they filmed a little intro explaining what they were doing. Grayson was so much more excited these days in all the videos, but even more so in the ones that had to do with adventures. You watched as the locked their phones in the box they’d used before, storing it under the benches in the van.
Once the cameras cut, Gray made his way back over to you, wrapping you up in a tight hug.
“I love you. I’m gonna miss you so much,” he murmured into your hair.
“I love you too Gray. Be safe.”
“You too. Call Ricky if you need anything okay? He’ll still have his phone for emergencies.”
“I’ll see you soon.”
-----------------------------------------------------
Grayson’s POV
His mind was already wandering as he continued driving down the road, already in Arizona. They were headed to Big Bend National Park, with the new challenge of not using their phones for navigation. Ethan was actually a good navigator, so once he got on the right highway it was just a matter of driving through Arizona and Texas, then down to the Mexico border to get to the park.
“I think all this footage is gonna be sick, and I’m excited to get some star shots once we get to the park,” Ethan said. Gray just nodded along, watching the road.
“You good bro? You’re off, I can feel it.”
“Yeah, I’m fine. I just have a pit in my stomach about this whole thing. It’s makin’ me anxious,” Grayson explained, fists tightening on the wheel of the van. Ricky was in the back, sound asleep.
“What about it though? Is it something specific?” Ethan asked.
“I can’t put my finger on it. I just have a weird feeling. I’m sure it’s nothing, I’m just in my head.”
“Is it Y/N?”
Sometimes, Grayson really hated sharing a mind. And this was one of those times. He stayed silent, which was enough of an answer for Ethan.
“She’s a fully capable person Gray. She’s gonna be fine without you for a few days.”
“Thanks asshole, I know. Just drop it.”
“Whatever,” Ethan shrugged, settling down into his chair a bit more, crossing his arms and getting comfy for the long trip ahead.
And a long trip it was. They made it to the park around 1am, and were amazed at what they saw. Above them was the whole milky way, clear as day.
They shot a quick clip explaining the main reason they’d come all the way to Big Bend.
“It’s a certified dark zone, which means no one is allowed to have building with lights out here. So theres no light pollution at all, it’s one of the best places in the world to see the stars,” Ethan explained. Grayson wasn’t paying too much attention; instead he was gazing up, and suddenly missing who he wanted beside him more than anything.
It was going to be a long few days.
Your POV:
The first four days were alright. You spent your time wandering around the house, enjoying all the space. You sat in Ethan’s comfy chair in the living room while you watched netflix, cuddled up in one of Grayson’s blankets from his bed that you’d dragged with you. It smelled like him, and it was comforting.
When that got boring you’d change into a swim suit, heading out to the pool - you’d given it a good cleaning, which you knew the boys would be thankful for when they got back. You were determined to get more of a tan than Gray by the end of the summer, and if you had any chance at all you needed to get a head start.
By day five, the boredom was starting to get to you. You wanted to talk to Grayson, see his face, see his smile, hear his laugh. You even resorted to going back and watching a few of your favorite videos of theirs, just to hear his voice. You felt pathetic while you did it, but you also couldn’t really bring yourself to care too much if you were honest. All throughout the day you caught yourself pulling out your phone to text him, but you knew he wouldn’t see them.
Still, you’d send a message just for fun, knowing he would see them once he got back and was allowed to have his phone. You could just imagine his face when he got back and saw all the little messages you’d left.
miss youuuuu
hey u should come home now, k thanks
I stole your favorite hoodie and you’re never getting it back oops
im gonna hide all your building stuff, that’s the level of boredom i’m at
this shit sucks
i love you
I wanna go on the next adventure :(
But as you sent the last one, it sparked an idea.
You could make your own adventure. Nothing was stopping you, and you had nothing better to do. The weather was nice, and there was supposed to be some good surf coming in.
And so, that was that. You packed up a towel, your wetsuit and some sunscreen, heading out to the car. You decided to take the Bronco, just because it had the surf rack on top. Grayson still wasn’t too keen on anyone driving his car, but he trusted you with it more than Ethan, and you knew he wouldn’t really care.
So you packed up your surfboard, struggling a bit to get it on top of the roof and strapped down - Grayson always made it look so damn easy. But you managed, finally getting in and heading to the beach. The drive was beautiful, as always, but you missed being in the passenger seat with Grayson’s hand on your thigh.
Damn. These last few days were gonna suck.
Grayson’s POV:
“I think we’re really getting the hang of this bro. I’m excited. We could do this full time, for real,” Grayson grinned, packing up a few things in the van while Ethan filled up the packs with water. Ricky was filming, so he took the opportunity to explain what was happening.
“So guys, today we’re going on the longest, and most difficult hike in Big Bend. It’s called South Rim, it’s about 14 miles total, but we’re gonna split it up and actually camp about halfway so we can get even cooler views tonight. Now, Ethan and I like to say we’re hikers, but honestly, we kinda suck.”
“Yeah, we uh, we’re not great,” Ethan chimed in.
“So this should be fun!”
“Oh yeah, great time.”
“And obviously we don’t have our phones, so we’re gonna have no idea what time it is, we won’t be able to call for help if we get, ya know, mauled by a mountain lion or something.”
“Bro, why would you say that!?” Ethan groaned.
“It’s the truth! Well, I guess Ricky has his phone though, so we’d be alright.”
“My phone hasn’t had service since we got here,” Ricky countered from behind the camera.
“Oh we are so fucked dude,” Ethan grumbled.
And in all honesty, it put a bit of a pit in Gray’s stomach, knowing he wouldn’t be able to contact anybody if something happened. But he pushed the thought from his mind, moving to help his brother pack up the tent and begin their trek.
Your POV:
The beach wasn’t too crowded, which was a blessing. When you said you liked to surf, it usually meant that you liked to catch 1 wave out of the 50 you tried for. You were a beginner, that was for sure. There were only about 20 people on the entire beach, and a few surfers out on the break, with the lifeguard keeping a close eye on them.
Even if you didn’t feel it, you looked the part in your wetsuit, board tucked under your arm. You snapped a quick picture, sending it to Grayson’s non-existent phone just for kicks.
wish you were here! you’d be laughing at how much I’m gonna suck. love you!
After it sent, you put it away in the waterproof box you’d brought. You made your way over to the lifeguard station, waving up at the man sitting atop the chair.
“Hey, I’m here by myself, do you care if I leave this box here with you?” You asked politely.
“Yeah that’s fine. Be careful out there,” he responded, not taking his eyes off the water. You put it down by the legs of the chair, jogging towards the water. The ocean was cold when it hit your skin but you adjusted quickly, diving in and heading out to the break.
And as you predicted, you missed practically every single one you tried to get up on. You hit the water over and over again, your arms sore from pushing up to standing, even if it was to no avail.
You began paddling in after about an hour, accepting defeat, when suddenly you noticed everyone beside you paddling out instead of in.
The lifeguard’s whistle came too late. By the time you turned around, the wave was already there, towering feet above any that had come prior.
And you were right in the break.
You’d read about these before. Rouge waves, you remembered. Random waves that come from nowhere, with no apparent cause. You had just enough time to suck in your breath before it crashed directly over your head.
It felt like the inside of a washing machine looked - that was the only way you could describe it. And then you felt something warm on your head, and everything went black.
Grayson’s POV:
It was the morning of day six, and Grayson had never been more ready to get home. The pit in his stomach was a rock now, and he had no explanation for it at all.
“Bro we’re actually disgusting. Like we need a real shower somewhere, or we’re never gonna get the smell out of this van,” Ethan said. And he was right. After all the hiking and sleeping in the tent, the three of them reeked.
“We could do a gas station shower, we just gotta map our way there without our phones. I don’t think that breaks the rules, we just aren’t supposed to use technology,” Ricky shrugged.
“Alright sick, we might as well start driving. Gray, you okay?” E asked.
“Yeah. Just don’t feel good,” he mumbled. He kept himself curled up in the back of the van, head resting on the table as Ethan found his way out of the park and towards the nearest town.
Grayson couldn’t figure out what was bothering him so much. He wasn’t dehydrated, he hadn’t eaten anything bad. He should be having the time of his life, but he couldn’t shake the feeling that something was terribly wrong. It was like the time that Ethan had cut his leg open when they were kids; Grayson wasn’t near him, but he just knew. It was exactly that feeling, except Ethan was right there in front of him, perfectly fine. So he just kept his head down, hoping whatever it was would pass.
They found the gas station about 45 minutes later, and the three of them headed in eagerly. Maybe a good warm shower would clear his mind.
And once he was done, he did feel better. But only slightly. It was getting harder to breathe. He headed out, noticing that Ricky was already in the van and Ethan was waiting outside.
“Gray, dude you don’t look good. What’s wrong?”
“I think I’m getting sick man. I’ve been sick to my stomach since yesterday, and I feel like I can’t breathe now. Maybe I’ve got a really bad allergy to something out here. I’m sorry man, I’m trying to shake it so I can be up for the video, but I don’t know where it’s coming from.”
“Guys.” Ricky’s voice was serious, much more serious than normal.
“What’s up?” E asked.
“I just got service again, and I’ve got 12 missed calls, all from the same number. I don’t recognize it though. LA area code.”
“Call it. Call it now.” Grayson’s answer came before he could even think about it. He felt like he was going to hurl.
Ricky dialed it back quickly, holding the phone up to his ear. The twins climbed in the back, sitting down across from him at the table.
“This is he.” Ricky said. “Um, yeah, yeah he’s right here.”
Grayson’s blood went ice cold when Ricky held the phone out for him.
“It’s for you.”
He felt robotic and he reached out, taking the phone and putting it up to his ear.
“Hello?”
“Hi, is this Mr. Grayson Dolan?”
“Yes.”
“Hi Grayson. We’re just calling on behalf of Ms. Y/N Y/L/N from King Hospital, you’re listed as her primary emergency contact.”
“Is she alright? What happened?”
“She’s stable right now. We don’t have all of the details, she’s been in and out of consciousness. She was in an accident -”
“Accident?” Grayson’s voice cracked, and Ethan stiffened up beside him. As if it was instinct, he felt his brothers hand on his shoulder, anchoring him just enough that he could listen.
“She was out surfing at Manhattan Beach, the lifeguards said there was a rouge wave. They got her out quickly, but they think she hit her head on some rocks when she went under. She wasn’t breathing when they got to her, but she was stabilized in the ambulance. She told us to call Ricky off her phone when she was conscious because you wouldn’t have your phone. We’ve had her sedated so her brain could rest, but it looks like we’re going to need to take her in for surgery, because we found some deep lacerations on her head and want to check for anymore significant damage.”
“Surgery?” Grayson expected himself to go numb, but he almost had the opposite. He was so overwhelmed that it was crippling. “How soon?”
“As soon as we’re able. She isn’t able to give consent, so we needed to get in contact with you if possible. Are you able to get here quickly?”
“I’m - I’m not in the state, I’m in Texas.”
“Well, a telephone consent will do,” the nurse said.
“Oh. Okay, yeah. Yeah, I consent. Do what you need to, please just be careful.” It was dumb thing to say, he knew that, but he couldn’t help himself.
“Thank you Mr. Dolan, we will. And we’ll keep you updated. Should we call at this number, or the one you have listed?”
“The one I have listed is fine, I have it now.”
Ethan knew exactly what that meant and was immediately scrambling to find the box with their phones while Ricky got the key ready off his keychain.
“Alright, speak soon Mr. Dolan.”
And with that she hung up the phone.
“I’m gonna be sick,” were the only words that Grayson could manage as he crawled to the back of the van and hurled over the bumper. Ethan followed him, holding onto his shoulders and trying to stabilize him so he didn’t fall out.
“What do we need to do Gray?”
“Drive. We need to get home, now.”
Without further questions, Ricky climbed into the drivers seat as they closed up the back of the van, immediately heading in the direction of California.
When Gray finally managed to get enough air in his lungs, he was able to look up at Ethan, who was sitting opposite of him.
“Y/N’s hurt. I think it’s pretty bad.”
“Tell me what happened.”
And so he did, to the best of his ability. He didn’t have very much information, which was the hard part. But he told his brother everything that the nurse did.
“Well, if she was with it enough to give them Ricky’s number instead of yours, that’s good. That means she was alright when they got her in the ambulance.”
“Right. I wonder if she tried to call me.” The thought made his stomach tighten.
“Your phone was dead, it’s charging up front right now. Either way, we’re headed back as quick as we can.”
Grayson noted that the van was moving quite quickly - Ricky was definitely speeding, but he didn’t care.
“E.”
“I know Gray. I’m scared too. But she’s gonna be alright. She has to be.”
She’s gonna be alright
She’s gonna be alright
He repeated the words over and over again in his head, sometimes mumbling them aloud. A few minutes later, his phone was charged. Ethan climbed to the front to get it. Without having to ask, Ethan knew that Grayson wanted him to screen his texts, just to see. And he could tell there were texts from her just by his face.
“E. If she text me about all this and I didn’t answer, I’m gonna lose my fucking mind.”
“She wouldn’t have been able to, she didn’t take her phone in the water. These are all from before.”
He held out his hand.
Looking at the texts was his undoing. He could hear her voice, clear as day in his head as he read them, making it all the much harder. He began to sob, uncontrollable ragged sounds. Ethan put an arm around his shoulder in silent support, as he often did. And Ricky continued down the road.
------------------------
It was the longest 15 hours of his life. They’d checked to make sure it wasn’t quicker to stop in Phoenix and put Grayson on a flight - driving straight through was faster. But god it felt like it was taking years. He held the picture he had of him and Y/N in his hand, but he couldn’t look at it for too long without losing it.
Ethan was driving now, with Grayson in the passenger seat - he hadn’t been forced to take a turn, everyone knew he was in no shape to drive.
Everyone in the car was on edge, which meant they all jumped practically to the ceiling when Grayson’s phone rang. He answered on the first ring.
“Hello?”
“Mr. Dolan?” It was a different voice this time.
“Yes.”
“Hi, this is Y/N’s surgeon, just calling with an update. Y/N is out of surgery, and she did great! No complications, and the damage seems pretty minimal, though we’ll have to see once she wakes up.”
He took his first real breath in the last 15 hours.
“That’s great news. Thank you.”
“So she’s in recovery right now, but she’s gonna be unconscious for the next 30 minutes or so. Should we be expecting you?”
“Yeah, yeah I’m headed there right now, I should be there in about 25 minutes according to my GPS.”
“Alright perfect. Well, she’s in room 828 on the post op wing when you get here, just sign in at the desk and we’ll bring you up. We’ll take good care of her.”
“Thank you so much doctor.”
“She’s alright. Out of surgery, should be waking up soon,” he explained as soon as he hung up. The relief was obvious, especially for Ethan. Gray had been so caught up in his own worry that he’d forgotten how worried Ethan must be - Y/N was practically his sister. Grayson watched as his brother pressed just a tiny bit more on the gas, racing towards the hospital.
When they arrived, Grayson couldn’t get out of the van fast enough. He bolted for the entrance, with Ethan in tow. Ricky stayed in the car out of privacy, offering to get them anything they needed.
They went through the motions of check in - something they were all too familiar with - and Grayson followed the nurse up to the post op floor, where he was transferred over to the nurse that had initially called him.
“She’s starting to stir just a bit. Just to prepare you, we aren’t sure how confused she’s going to be when she wakes up. With the mixture of anesthesia and her concussion, she may be very out of it. Just be patient with her, she should come around to her normal self within the next few hours. She’s right through here.” The nurse stopped outside the door, opening the door with a gentle push.
“You wanna go alone, or do you want me with you?” Ethan asked, hesitating.
“With me.” He didn’t have to think about it.
Grayson went in first, and if Ethan hadn’t been behind him, he probably would have fallen to his knees. Y/N was in the hospital bed, gown over her still form, her head partially wrapped in gauze. She had oxygen tubes in her nose and was breathing deeply, laying flat on her back, eyes closed. Just the image of her in the whole hospital garb was enough to bring tears to his eyes. He hated it more than he could have imagined.
Once he was stable enough on his feet, Grayson headed to her bedside. As he got closer, she started to stir a bit, fingers twitching as he sat down as gently as he could on the side of her bed. It was as if she knew he was there already, even though he hadn’t said a word or touched her at all.
“Mmmmmm.” She started to make a noise, her dry lips parting.
“Baby?” Grayson leaned forward, taking her hand in his, careful not to move her IV.
“Mmm- mad.” She mumbled, eyes still closed.
“Mad?” He looked back at Ethan for clarification, but he just nodded. Grayson raised a hand up to cup her cheek, and she smiled, resting her head in his palm. He revealed in the feeling, taking it in.
“Bronco.” This time, her word was clear, though it didn’t make anymore sense.
“Baby. Y/N, can you open your eyes sweetheart?” Grayson coaxed, rubbing his thumb along her cheekbone.
“Tryin’. It’s heavy,” she said, scrunching her eyebrows. He could tell she was really doing her best, which made his heart squeeze a bit tighter. When she finally managed to lift her eyelids, he could tell she was exhausted.
“You’s gonna be mad at me,” was the first sentence she managed to string together, though all her words were drawn out and slightly garbled.
“Why would I be mad at you baby?”
“I drove the bronco, left it at the beach. Probs some homeless guy living in it,” she said, resting all the weight of her head onto his hand.
“It’s okay. I really couldn’t care less about the car right now.”
“Don’t say that, Ethan will be big sad.” She gasped then, sitting upright a little more. “Ethan! Hi buddy!” She had just noticed him at the end of the bed. She blinked hard, like she was trying to bring him into focus.
“Hey girly, how yah feelin?”
“Got a cracked skull, but i’ms okay. But guess what?”
“What?” He asked.
“Still smarter than youuuuu,” she shrugged, and Grayson couldn’t help but let out a laugh.
She really was back to normal.
“You want me to go get the car?” Ethan asked, sitting on the opposite side of her bed and for once, choosing not to throw a comeback. He really had been worried.
“I don’t have keys. Or my phone. I left em with the lifeguard,” she pouted, her lip curling down. If it wasn’t so pitiful, he would have found it adorable.
“It’s okay, we’ll figure it out. Don’t worry about it,” Grayson reassured her, leaning forward to press a kiss to her forehead.
The nurse came in then to check on her. Ethan moved out of her way, and Grayson was about to move away, but Y/N grabbed his hand, using all her strength to hold him there.
“Don’t go,” she whimpered, and he swore he could feel a piece of his heart crack.
“I’m right here, just getting out of the nurses way,” he promised, kissing her hand and standing next to the bed.
“You guys are fine, I’ll let you know if you’re somewhere I need to be,” the nurse smiled. “How’re you feeling Y/N?”
“Sore, but okay.”
“Well, you’re a trooper. I’ve never seen anyone come out of anesthesia so clear headed before. Now, you might get confused in a little while, but that’s just the concussion, and it’ll pass, okay? Just gotta give it time. You just rest and give your body some time to heal. You should be ready to rock and roll out of here in the next few days, okay?”
“M’kay. Is my phone lost forever?” She asked.
“Actually the lifeguard that pulled you out dropped off your box with your things earlier. It’s over there with your other belongings.”
Grayson made a mental note to find that guy and thank him profusely in the future. Ethan went over to the personal items bag, bringing it over to the bed. Y/N started to rummage through it, pulling things out one by one.
When she got her wetsuit out - which took some effort - she frowned, running her finger over the new cut that Grayson assumed was made by the paramedics. He tried as hard as he could to not picture what the ambulance looked like when that cut was made.
“They cut it,” she pouted. “That was my favorite one.”
“I’ll buy you a new one,” Grayson reassured her.
“M’kay,” she mumbled, satisfied. She cuddled down a little bit into her pillow, obviously exhausted. Grayson continued going through the bag, getting the keys and her phone out of the box.
“I’m gonna get the car before it gets towed. Give you all a minute,” Ethan said quietly, having a hand out for the keys.
“Thanks bro. I’ll keep you updated.”
He was extremely grateful, but he couldn’t find the words. He hoped Ethan knew.
“Gray,” Y/N said quietly.
“Hey baby, I’m right here.”
“M’tired,” she murmured, holding a hand out. “Can we sleep?”
“You can sleep sweetheart,” Grayson reassured her.
“C’mere. Come up here,” she said, patting the bed next to her.
Grayson obliged, sliding his arms under her knees and behind her back, scooting her over just enough so that he could slide into the bed beside her.
“Much better. I missed you. Maybe don’t go for so long next time,” she said, curling up against him and getting as close as she could.
“Don’t worry. I’m not leaving you for a long, long time.”
“Sounds good to me,” she mumbled, but she was already falling asleep before the end of the sentence. So Grayson held her close to him, relishing in the feeling and lulling off to sleep.

so first thing i have to say about far cry (check out the other posts later)
i wanna talk about the best part of the game:
fishing
yeah i doubt its the most popular opinion but i will die on this hill. the fishing is the best part of the game
i grew up in buttfuck nowhere, so i have spent a lot of time being nearby wilderness things, and have experienced most wilderness things. that being said; i hate fishing, its boring and i cant be in the water, which is far better than being near it
far cry fishing is def unrealistic, but its sharp, consistent and believable, that i feel i could feasibly go fly fishing with no experience
and i gotta give the sound design so so much credit for that, the sound of the line tightening as the fish pulls, its such a subtle informational cue that doesnt use the bog standard fishing bar (im sorry stardew valley)
and the best sound i think in the whole experience is the fish sound, its such a wet sound!?! i dont understand how sounds get wet, but some games just nail that. its such a fun reward to the more mechanical, stretching sound of the fishing itself.
what really sets this as the best part of the game to me though, is the incredible contrast which it has from the rest of the game. everything from the story and sidequests are covered in guns, cars and explosions like they were sprinkles.
now im not saying thats a bad thing, the game does it really well, and its a fun time. and sure you can hunt, or enjoy the wilderness, stuff like that, but hunting means guns, exploring means using your fancy exploration equipment like your parachute and wingsuit and grappling hook, and it gets sorta action-y
but fishing has none. no pew, no bang, no zoom or vroom. its just you, some floppy bois, and the amazing natural setting of the game.
being able to go from freeing encampments in a blaze of glory, using john wick like gun-fu with your pistol and throwing knives, to then head out back with your trusty fishing rod and just, hang out. its impeccable, its kinda the thing that just cause 4 was lacking for me.
all too often i would start to get overstimulated with the constant blockbuster nonsense, and even with the non-explosion-y side quests, like wingsuit and parachute challenges, those still stunk (not in like, a bad way) of action movie stuff
im telling you
fishing
this also leads to a really fun thing:
i like fishing -> i wanna stop things that keep me from doing so
if im vibing by the riverside, and then some cultist on a jetski comes and scares off the fishies,
i get fuckin bothered by that.
so the only choice is to whip out the action movie bullshit and take your revenge
it creates player driven goals from what otherwise would just be a random enemy patrol. instead of 'oh dang, a dude' it turns into "SIDEQUEST: Protect the Fishies"
i think next im gonna talk about the gun stuff in the game, check out the tag for this little series #farcrywiththeo
hidden story to keep the post shorter
my first time trying out the fishing, i figured, "eh how bad can it be" and bought the intro fishing rod from a dude near a stream (im astonished they dont give it to you by default tbh) and gave it a few casts
i obvs fell in love w it, and hung out there for a good bit
the issue: the generic npcs in this game are... not great
so the dude i bought it from spent the entire time mumbling stuff like
im gonna catch me a big un'
nice piece of land we got up here, shame its bein' shot to hell
this lake is nice this time of year
on repeat
so i did what any person trying to protect their fishing time would do
ganked him
and then it was silent, and it was wonderful

DMX Discography Overview
It's Dark and Hell is Hot(1998): DMX's distinctive growl, aggression, and arresting flow is fully formed and at its highest potency here on It's Dark and Hell Is Hot. It's Dark and Hell is Hot is, for the most part, a dark menacing and street-orientated album. Some tracks even lean toward a horror-core vibe, "X is Coming" being the bleakest and most unsettling of the bunch. Still, there are deeply emotive tracks like Let Me Fly, Look Through My Eyes, and Convo, where DMX gets introspective and lets us in on his struggles internally and morally/spiritually. There are also hits here, like the hard but catchy "Ruff Ryders Anthem" and the chill summer jam "How's It Going Down." The album's production is handled by PK and Dame Grease, with the album's calling card produced by Swizz Beatz. On a broader level, DMX was a presence in the rap game filled some of the space that had been vacant since Tupac Shakur was murdered, passionate, aggressive, and visceral only specifically representative of the east coast. He also was the answer to the shiny suit luxury rap era Puffy was dominating with in 1997. The album is pure classic and certainly a top-tier album of 1998. Rating: 9.0/10
Favorite Tracks: Rough Rydahs Anthem, How's It Going Down, Intro, Crime Story, Look Thru My Eyes, Let Me Fly

Flesh of my Flesh Blood of my Blood(1998): Flesh of My Flesh Blood of my Blood was released in late December of 1998 cemented DMX as the biggest rapper of that year and late 90s in general(Jay-Z notwithstanding). Aside from the Beastie Boys, the album had the highest first-week sales in a highly competitive year. As for the quality of this one, It's more of DMX's burst of rough and jagged rhymes. When he's not menacing(which is most of the time), he's as introspective and pain-stricken as he was on It's Dark, and Hell Is Hot. The apex of that would be "Slippin," an iconic song that is amongst the saddest tracks in hip-hop history as DMX open shares the trauma of his upbringing, being an addict and struggling to get out of it only to find its way back in it and everything that surrounds that in his past. It's really the fight in the song that makes the song his willingness not to quit and keep trying that makes the song "I got to get up, get back on my feet so I can tear sh*t up." What keeps the album from being the classic his debut was is that Swizz Beats takes the helm on most of the production here, which is hit or miss. DJ Shok, PK, and Dame Grease have a lot of the best beats here. They bring out that dark energy and tone that makes for X's best work. All in all, it's still a great project and amongst his best work. Rating: 8.0/10
Favorite Tracks: Slippin', Dogs For Life, Coming From, Black Out,

...And Then There Was X(1999): ...And Then There Was X picks up were DMX previously left out brutal, pummeling bone-crushing violence come is to be expected. "One More Road to Cross" and "The Professional"(one of the albums hardest tracks) are early highlights. Then there's the heartfelt but mature writing of "Here We Go Again," one X's best tracks, and "More 2 a Song," the ladder of which speaks to DMX's avoidance when it comes to rapping about the flashy materialistic side of things. While this is DMX's third full length album, it sounds more like a full-fledged sophomore effort to It's Dark and Hell is Hot while Flesh of my Flesh' plays more as an extension, too, or a very good b-side to its predecessor. This album contains some of DMX most well-known hits it including his biggest "Party Up"(Up in Here), a high energy track produced by Swizz Beatz that finds DMX being peak DMX, the chorus is both funny and little corny, there's a good touch of humor in DMX's bars on the track that give it charm. Another well-known X track is "What these B*tches Want" ft Sisqo, a silly and misogynistic track that has its charm and humor but is a bit lacking as far as the chorus in my opinion. "What's My Name?" however, is a banger that's one of DMX's better singles and meant to be played at a high volume out of your car. ...And Then There Was X is another strong album from DMX, and its more consistent than Flesh of my Flesh' less visceral and hungry than It's Dark. 8.5/10
Favorite tracks: Party Up(Up in Here) Here We Go Again, What's My Name, The Professional, Angel, More 2 a Song

The Great Depression(2001): DMX's fourth straight #1 album finds him trying new things. There are the rap-rock efforts like Bloodline Efforts, and I'ma Bang which will always be hit or miss depending on the kind of music listener you are. To me, they're listenable but amongst the corniest of DMX records in his catalog. The worst is the silly/sad "She Was Da Bomb" where X writes a track about basically impregnating a woman and threatening to be a deadbeat. Yeah, the lows here are amongst the lowest of his career. Transversely, "Who We Be," a socially conscious record, is one of DMX's best tracks ever, and "We Right Here" has a great beat and is amongst the best on the album. Aside from the hits, you get the heartfelt "I'm Missing You" and the thoughtful "When I'm Nothing". There are also more R&B sounds here which I think is a nice change of pace. The Great Depression is solid; it's less aggressive and consistent than any of the three albums before it; some songs really work, and a few don't. I think it's worth listening to; there are essential DMX tracks here, but I wouldn't consider the LP quintessential as a whole. 7.5/10
Favorite Tracks: Who We Be, We Right Here, When I”m Nothing, I”m Missing You,
youtube
Grand Champ(2003): DMX's fifth straight #1 album is even more boom or bust than The Great Depression is. Where The Great Depression had weird moments and tracks that didn't quite work. Here X doesn't sound quite as passionate as he does early in his career. In an interview he did on 106 n Park around the time of the album's release, he'd spoken about not making what he should off his music, and I wonder how much that put a damper on writing and recording for this album. When it comes to what's here, the menacing brutality and growl is here, but it isn't as consistently visceral as it was early on. At 24 tracks, it's also a long, over-bloated album but even shorting it; I don't think the bulk of the music here holds up through time. "Get it On the Floor," has a terrible chorus, and most tracks between 13-23 are forgettable. As for the best of what's here "Where the Hood At" Produced by Swizz is a classic DMX track it's hard and has a great beat and hook. "Dogs Out" Which features Kanye on production. Then you have "We're Back" ft Eve and Jadakiss, another highlight and features pretty good verses from all three, but I believe Jada had the best performance. The international version of the album features the track "X Gon Give It To Ya" another very good single from X. This is an interesting listen, and depending how die-hard an X fan you are you may still enjoy this. I think there are tracks worth salvaging, but it isn't an essential listen. 6.5/10
Favorite Tracks: Dogs Out, Where The Hood At, X Gon Give it to Ya
youtube
The Year of the Dog(2006):This is the point where the bottom really fell out on DMX's music. The highs here aren't amongst the highest of X's career, and the lows are certainly amongst the lowest—tons of generic and lackluster production, mediocre choruses. A weird rap/rock crossover. DMX's tenacity isn't as urgent or visceral, and a lot of what's here (tracks 2-10) sounds, sadly, like a caricature of himself(with "It's personal" as the exception). The best tracks on the album are sneak in at the end where you find songs like "Blown Away" and "Goodbye"; those are the most soul-bearing tracks on the album. As a whole, it's a below-average album that, aside from a few moments, The down turn reflected itself culturally and sells wise it was his first album not to go #1 and only to go gold, and by the mid 00s DMX wasn’t in most conversations when comes to being amongst the best . 4.0/10
Favorite Tracks: It’s Personal, Blown Away, Goodbye, Life Be My Song
Undisputed(2012): Undisputed was a well-intentioned, admirable comeback album for DMX. There are some solid moments here "Cold World" Speaks on what he perceives as the rap game getting weak. "I'm back" is one of the better tracks on the album. You can hear the pain coming through on "Have You Eva." I like "Y'all Don't Really Know" because it comes close to some of his early work. Still, it just isn't enough; there are quite a few missteps on this album, whether it'd be the awful "Sucker for Love" or "I Get Scared" X sounds weaker vocally, and the production is lacking. There's some charm to "I Don't Dance" with MGK but it's somewhat awkward and not among his strongest singles. It's better than Year Of The Dog but still far from the level of X's heyday. 5.5/10
Favorite Tracks: I‘m Back, Have You Eva, Ya’ll Don’t Really Know
DMX is an undeniable legend and quintessential to late 90s-early 00s hip-hop. His music and voice, and passion transcends its era and is easily felt now. His apex from 98-00' is highly recommended. Past that, it's a lot more hit and miss, but both the Great Depression and Grand Champ have some gems worth grabbing. Past that, it's even spottier but given X's internal struggles it was great we were even able to get those LPs. Fortunately, DMX seemed to be doing well and had finished an album before passing away, so I'm eager to hear what he'd been working on.

Fortune’s Rule, Part 1
So I had a conundrum: wait until this fic was finished and nice and way too long for anyone to read in one sitting, or break it up into parts and hope that readers don’t mind that the “leading man” doesn’t actually appear in the first part. SIGH. So I’ve decided to go with the second one.
If anyone has some pointers for me on how to write stories that are short, concise and don’t require people to fight their way through my word jungle in order to get what they want out of the experience, that’d be swell.
Anyway, here’s the first part of this story. I promise that there will be subsequent parts coming soon.
Pairing: Damian Priest x OFC (I wasn’t joking, he literally doesn’t appear in this first section)
Word count: 2,386 (And it’s just a bloody intro???? Yes, I’m sorry)
Content advisory: violence, criminal behavior, drug use
“What the hell was that?” Cynthia whimpers, sinking into the backseat a little further.
You twist your neck from the passenger seat, although there’s nothing to see from the outside of the house, at least for now. You both heard it, a few sharp cracks that echoed in your brains, if not in reality, like those stupid cherry bomb fireworks people were always setting off when you were kids. The sort of thing boys were always into.
Cynthia clamps a hand over her mouth and shakes her head. This is not her scene. This is way beyond her scene. She’s here because the two of you were supposed to score some mushrooms out of the deal, but more importantly, she’s here because she’s your friend. You were the one who assured her that it was no problem for the two of you to accompany your boyfriend, Johnnie, to actually buy the drugs from his supplier. Yes, you’d known that he was picking up a lot more than mushrooms. And yes, you’d been aware that there was some kind of tension between him and the guys that he was going to buy from. But you’d told yourself that it was no big deal and, just to make yourself feel that much more confident, you’d told Cynthia that as well.
A few seconds later, you see Johnnie come tearing out of the house, a few more loud firecracker-sounds following him. He crashes into the car like a missile, jumping so forcefully into the driver’s seat that he almost ends up in your lap. He drops a worn canvas satchel onto the console between you and as it shifts closer to you, you can see what looks like a lot of bills inside.
“Keys!” he rasps.
You shove your spare set into his hand, not wanting to ask where his keys have gone. He fires up the engine and takes off so fast that the back of the car fishtails and the tires screech.
“Johnnie, what the fuck just happened?” you growl, your heart pumping as you see the sweat pouring from him and a trickle of blood from a cut on his brow.
“Don’t fucking start,” he snaps. “Don’t start with me now. We’re going to go back home and I’ll explain then but until we’re home I don’t want to hear a fucking word, you got that?”
His voice rises threateningly for the last three words and you hear Cynthia sob behind you. You know that there’s a problem, a big problem. You just want to know that those sounds you heard weren’t shots. That’s all you want to know.
“It’s just that we heard… there was something that sounded…” You don’t want to anger him. His eyes are so intently focused on the road ahead that you feel like distracting him will cause some sort of meltdown.
“I said shut the hell up!” he bellows, grabbing something from his pocket and tossing it into your lap.
The weight hits you and you almost scream in shock before you even know what it is. Then, when you see what it is, you want to scream even more. Sitting in your lap is a handgun. You’ve seen them, even held them before when your father used to take you to shoot handmade targets in the field near the trailer park where you’d grown up. But this is different. The metal is warm and the damn thing is much bigger than anything your father used to use. It’s something that would intimidate other people when you whipped it out. It’s the sort of thing that should end a dispute through intimidation alone. But in this case, you’re pretty sure it didn’t.
You’d love to punch Johnnie right in the fucking ear. You want to demand to know what’s going on, but he’s the one who’s managing the vehicle that’s rocketing through the back roads to get to the highway and it feels like anything you say is going to freak him out.
From the backseat, Cynthia whispers your name, wanting to know what’s going on.
“Don’t worry, Cyn,” you reassure her. “It’s no big deal.”
“Shut up,” Johnnie spits, almost under his breath.
You can’t miss the look on Cynthia’s face as she pushes her cherry red hair out of her eyes. She knows that something has gone very wrong as surely as you do.
“Just take it easy, “ you grunt in Johnnie’s direction. “You don’t want to get pulled over for speeding.”
He looks like he’s about to turn and punch you in the face but almost immediately, a wave of calmness passes over him. He takes his foot off the gas just a little and seems to focus on the road and not whatever he’s just seen.
The three of you ride in silence until you hit the offramp to the freeway, at which point it seems like there’s enough distance between you and the place you’ve left for you to speak.
“You need to tell me what the hell happened back there,” you snap.
“I didn’t have anything to do with it,” he mutters, pulling out to pass the car in front of him like the guy owes him money.
“Dude, something went all the fuckin way wrong and you need to tell us because we need to know what to say in case anyone comes asking questions.” You let the emphasis fall on the final word so that he catches your full meaning. The three of you need to get your stories in line.
“It was nothing,” he insists. “I went there to conduct a little business, some other guys showed up and started an argument. I didn’t feel good about the whole situation so I left.”
“Johnnie, no one else came up to the house while you were in there. And it seemed like whatever argument happened involved guns.”
“Why the fuck are you contradicting me? You wanna know what to tell the cops? Tell them exactly what I just said!”
“Oh yeah? And what if there are traffic cameras or neighbourhood watch cameras? What happens if there’s a nosy fucking neighbour? No other car pulled up. No other people walked into that house after you did. So get your shit together and tell us enough of what happened that we can come up with a story that the cops will actually buy.”
“What the hell is going on?” Cynthia groans, staring at you with her almost perfectly round eyes.
You want to grab her hand and reassure her. After all, the two of you have been friends since junior high school. You skipped school together and hitchhiked to the city to go see so many shows. Almost all of your first drug experiences have been together. You’d lost your virginity to the same sleazy guy who always showed up at high school parties even though he was clearly too old to be there.
But for all the time and experience you’ve had together, you feel like you can’t help her right now. Things had been a bit weird since you’d hooked up with Johnnie and since she’d gotten a scholarship to art school. She hadn’t even applied on her own, hadn’t ever considered education beyond high school, but some of her paintings got picked up by a local gallery and a big shot from a nearby college had been awestruck. He’d pushed her until she applied and when she’d gotten accepted, he’d made sure that she was able to get a full scholarship. In a couple of months, she was heading away.
You hadn’t ever considered education beyond high school either but all it meant for you was that you’d spent the last few years working at whatever minimum wage shit job you could find and doing as much as you could to distract yourself when you weren’t on the clock.
She’d found a lifeline. You hadn’t. You tried not to be jealous of that. You liked to think you were keeping her open-minded by doing psychedelics together.
Johnnie is gripping the steering wheel like he’s trying to choke it to death. Although he’s eased off on the speed a little, he’s still going way faster than he should, well over the speed limit, and you don’t know what’s going to happen if you get pulled over. As a precaution, you take the gun off your lap and slide it under the passenger seat. Cynthia notices and gasps when she sees what you’re doing.
You keep your eyes on him as he stares furiously at the freeway ahead, his concentration unbroken until he sees two police cars, sirens blaring, headed in the other direction.
“Fuck,” he gasps, jerking the wheel to the right.
The car swerves violently and both you and Cynthia scream.
“Shut up! They’re headed to the house. I just need to take the next exit and stay off the highways for a while.”
You’re about to ask him how he knows where the police are headed when he slams the car to the right again, lining up to take the next exit.
Another police car, this one followed by an ambulance, rockets by on the far side of the freeway, siren howling and lights flashing.
“Fuck!” Johnnie gasps.
You’re hardly able to process the sound before you hear yourself screaming. The exit is just ahead but he swings the wheel wildly, propelling you off the road entirely and into the thick foliage on your right. The car bounces violently enough that your head slams off the side, the dashboard, and the roof, the howls and yelps of your two companions echoing like something in the distance. You hit a series of hard bumps, like you’re going down a very steep staircase and it feels like every part of your upper body gets banged up in the descent before you finally hit bottom and your skull slams hard into the dashboard.
It’s a long few minutes before you recover enough to realize where you are and realize that the car is quickly filling with murky water. . Instinctively, you unfasten your seatbelt and try to force the car door open, to no avail. It’s then that you become aware that the car has taken a nosedive into the swampy river and that it’s sinking quickly. Your window is down enough that you can, somewhat painfully, pull yourself through it, although being sucked down into the mud and water doesn’t feel much safer on the outside of the car.
You keep a grip on the door and look inside. Johnnie is unconscious over the steering wheel, his neck bent at an ugly angle and a stream of blood slowly falling from his mouth. You hesitate a moment before reaching through the window again and grabbing the satchel from the front seat. At first, Cynthia looks like she’s unconscious and face down in the water but as you’re about to move away, she raises her head and wriggles her body towards the door.
She hisses your name as she pulls herself up to the window, extending her hand for you to pull her out. “Shit,” she moans, “this fucking hurts. Let’s just get out of here.”
You can see her legs, which you hope she can’t. They’re mangled, the bone of one shin ripping through the skin, both obviously fractured in multiple places, trailing after her like strange, jointed snakes.
You back up a step or two. “I’m going to go get help,” you croak. “I’ll be back in a few minutes.”
She shakes her head violently, a long stream of blood and saliva escaping her bottom lip.
“No way. Come on, get me out of here. We’ll make up some story for the hospital.”
You don’t know what the hell you could tell a hospital, particularly if the police are on the lookout for some people who fled the scene of a crime along the exact same route you’d been taking before you crashed. You need to get away from here. You’re dazed but you’re not broken. No one needs to know that you were ever here.
“I’ll be right back,” you assure Cynthia, backing away from the car and into the river.
“Godammit, don’t you dare leave me here Leeanne!” she screams.
“I’ll be right back,” you repeat.
She’s injured. She’s too injured for you to help. The police will find the car. The police will rescue her. Whatever she tells them, they’re not going to prosecute her because she’s just an innocent bystander. She just went to get some mushrooms with her deadbeat best friend and her wannabe drug kingpin boyfriend. She’ll be fine.
“Don’t worry,” you yell at her as you step back into the river, the current pulling at your legs.
Her screams resonate for what seems like a long time as you let yourself be carried a bit by the current. If the police come with their dogs, they’ll lose your scent in the river. For some reason, this is something that you remember even as you’re fighting to keep your head above water. Finally, feeling that you might be reaching the end of your strength, you grab hold of a low-hanging branch near the far side of the water. You just cling to it for a while, trying to catch your breath and summon the strength to rescue yourself. As you listen to the sound of your laboured breathing, you swear you can still hear Cynthia’s screams.
Finally, you haul yourself up the river bank and crawl onto dry ground. You pull yourself over the forest floor, not trusting your legs, until your lungs simply refuse to give you the oxygen to move any farther. Looking out over the river, you can see the back end of the car, slowly sinking beneath the surface in the distance. There are sirens again and noises, voices, people closing in on the wreckage. You want to watch, to know if Johnnie and Cynthia are alright. But you also need to sleep. Your head is pulsing from the point where it hit the dashboard, so painful it feels like your skull is cracked. You try to keep your eyes open, wanting to know, but the world is growing darker and colder and you’re too exhausted to fight it off any longer.
