I think I would’ve vibed with the timeless child stuff if they had gone about showing it differently. master shows up like “there’s a big secret that makes our whole history a lie and I destroyed gallifrey over it but I won’t tell you what it is bcs I’m evil again ;)” .. i still don’t even know why all of his previous development as missy just went erased.. what happened to “it’s called friendship”? You’d think with what happened in seasons past he’d at least try to find her Before destroying gallifrey.

Riverrosetober 2023- Day 7, Prompt: Home

THE WOMAN WHO FELL TO EARTH- TARDIS INSIDE, 13 HAS FALLEN

Rose hit the side of the TARDIS walls, she twisted and grabbed onto the railing. Somewhere to her right was River who had slammed into the console and gripping onto the controls for her life, she may have regained more regeneration cycles but she did not want to regenerate right after her husband-wife. Especially in the TARDIS which had just dealt with their regeneration. She and Rose had been scolding him for holding it back, but when he got into one of those depressive states. Gods, there wasn't a whole lot they could do.

Eventually the shaking of the TARDIS stopped, though she kicked the two of them out of the console room. Which was more then fine with the two of them for the moment because despite both of their superior biology's (Rose shivered, that sounded far too much like her husband-wife. Blimey, that'd take some getting used to.) being that close to a regeneration, especially one that's part of a fresh set... best they go to the Med Bay and make sure neither of them are injured, and then when that's finished they can go and see what their lovely girl has come up with for a new console.

Earth- 2018, Sheffield

"-oh! And I need to get back to my Rose and my River. Ooh, will they still like me?" 13 looked down at her body, then quickly looked into the microwave that she was using to help locate the TARDIS. She was quite short in this body, shorter then she'd been in others. Her eyes flicked up to her hair, she rather liked it-though she was afraid that Rose might say she stole hers.

Standing back up and spinning to face the three humans that stood nearby she had a grin on her face, "Right! One... Two... Three!" she used her makeshift sonic, for a moment nothing happened and then-she was floating in deep space. The Doctor sighed, then panicked, looked, and saw Yaz, Graham, and Ryan nearby. "Fuck."

TARDIS Interior

Carefully Rose rose from the table and stretched, full body scans were a nuisance. She turned towards River, "So? Anything abnormal with me?"

"Nope. According to the scans you are perfectly fine-well, as much as you ever are. Your cell degradation has slowed down some more, so your life expectancy has increased more."

"Great," she swung her legs off the table, looking down at her outfit, "New clothing time?"

River sighed, "New clothing time indeed. And perhaps some chips?"

Rose perked up, "hmmm, how about fishfingers with custard?"

"...sure, you can have custard with it, just, when the Doctor is back- please don't give any to them."

"Why not? They liked it perfectly fine in their eleventh body."

"Rose."

"Ok, ok! I won't... while you can see anyways."

"What was that last bit, Darling?"

"Nothing! Now, food-then outfits. And then we check out the console room."

THE GHOST MONUMENT- end of episode with 13

"Ohh! Oh, yes! C'mon, come to mama!" 13 has a manic grin on her face she called out to the TARDIS trying to stabilize her. Finally she succeeded.

Rushing over to pulled the doors wide open, and suddenly, almost reverently she walked in. Turning to look around, "oh, you've redecorated. I quite like it."

"You better since you're the reason she had to change desktops."

The Doctor spun, eyes landing on one of her wives, "Rose!" she rushed over and lifted her wife into a hug before setting her down. Then she noticed something was wrong, she had to look up. And at that realization she sighed, and Rose giggled.

Hesitantly, the Doctor stepped back. Suddenly self-conscious, what if they didn't like her now?

Apparently she had voiced that concern aloud and was being reprimanded, by River. "-d you absolute idiot! Of course we love you. Now- we are going to get you to the zero room and you are going to stay until your fully done regenerating. Don't think I don't see the wisps still circling."

Somehow she ended being led away by River, and Rose turned to the three people nearby. She sighed before shaking her head, "Would you like a 'cuppa?"

Yaz nodded, with Graham not for behind, but Ryan asked if he could have coffee. To which Rose simply smiled, "'course you can." and that was that.

#this is another change that I’d attribute to the shift towards character-driven storytelling #s1 set a precedent where The core conflict of the show is between the companion’s ordinary life and their life with the dr #which. is better dramatically to resolve by making a Thing out of it and elaborating on Why they can’t go home or why they can’t stay #whatever Reason classic companions have to be traveling with the dr doesn’t tend to be a big deal #because classic didn’t have any long-term plotlines or character arcs the way nuwho does #(which isn’t Bad it’s just a different storytelling format) #basically. I’m not sure if Every modern companion leaving under Good Circumstances would work well under nuwho’s format #honestly I think the fact that all of chibnall’s companions left to their home time basically unchanged is one of the era’s biggest weaknesses #ESPECIALLY Graham and Ryan weren’t given the kind of character work that would allow a tragic/dramatic departure #they leave the tardis almost entirely unchanged from when they entered and that’s like. #I mean it’s FINE for a certain format and style of television #but dr who hasn’t done that since classic and just throwing it into nuwho doesn’t Work (via osgoodification)

No offense to modern Doctor Who but why does every companion stay in the TARDIS until some horrible life altering thing forces them to leave (death, trapped in a parallel universe, memories forcibly taken, etc.). I miss how in Classic Who most companions just said “Hey Doc, this has been fun but I think it’s time I went home” or “hey this planet is pretty cool, I think I’m going to stay here” and the Doctor was just like “okay cool, I’ll always remember you fondly, bye!”

“we’re so back, doctor whos so good now.” did nobody watch 13’s era? the king flirted with ryan. there was history episodes, like actual good ones. earth had alive goo in it. there was an alien who collected teeth and stuck them in his face as a trophy. the doctor and the master were straight presenting but queer. the master did a whole dance to rasputin. there’s MI6. they meet mary shelley. the doctor just keeps finding companions. jacks there and he kisses graham. dan lewis is there and i love him. there’s one too many gravestones. the doctor and yaz have a whole episode which feels like a fanfic. i don’t like chibnalls writing of the doctors backstory but like the seasons are good. we’ve been back for a while. just say you don’t like 13 and move on.

A non-exhaustive collection of my Doctor Who hot takes:

Thirteen has now taken Nine's position of "most underrated modern Doctor". I bet you people are already recommending "skip thirteen" as part of their advice to new fans. I hate this.

Nine's dynamic with Rose is more interesting (to me, at least) than Ten's dynamic with Rose. Nine and Rose come across like cool besties who may be getting into QPR territory and are trying to figure it out. Ten and Rose, by contrast, are every sixteen year old straight couple.

I think Six and Mel have a better dynamic than Six with Peri; partially because the writers started having Six be a lot kinder and gentler, and partially because Mel's personality meshes with Six's better than Peri's did.

Eleven is considered the least favourite modern Doctor by most of the fandom not because of anything wrong with Matt Smith's peformance but because a) some people hated that Tennant wasn't playing the part anymore and b) M*ffat hamstrung Eleven's characterisation.

The brigadier definitely improves over time; I found him especially difficult to like during the Third Doctors era but by the Seventh Doctors era he was a lot easier to enjoy watching (and the writers were less okay with him being misogynistic by then; never quite forgave him for being such a jerk to Tegan and Nyssa).

Twelve was the most hated modern Doctor for ages primarily because people had gotten used to attractive young men playing the character and reacted badly when the Doctor didn't look like the fresh-out-of-uni teacher they fancied at school.

Jenna Coleman is really good at Clara but I think she works better as a Twelve companion than an Eleven companion; their dynamic feels a lot more interesting.

The writing of the Chibnall era is fine. Like, a lot of it is really good. For a lot of people, it was never about the writing (as they insisted); it was because they didn't like that Thirteen was being played by a woman.

The extended fam (Yaz, Graham, Ryan and Dan) are severely underrated by the fandom. They all have so much interesting characterisation but you wouldn't know it from the way so many associate them as being "boring".

Some of the first RTD era had really not aged well, especially when it comes to how Martha was treated.

RTD deliberately avoided mentioning as much as he could about Thirteen's era in the sixtieth anniversary specials because he wanted people to forget that era happened. Thirteen's outfit? Burned away. Mentioning every companion? Thirteen's companions are left out. Every love interest mentioned? No mention of Yaz, despite her being the love interest barely three episodes before.

M*ffat seems to actively dislike writing for RTD's companions; in so many of his episodes for RTD's two eras, the companions are either shunted over to the side or the Doctor is randomly rude to them for no reason.

The Timeless Child is less of a canon-breaker than bi-generation.

David Tennant is a lovely man but I don't want him to play the Doctor for at least another ten years. He has so far played three separate versions of the Doctor; that's more than enough.

Going back to my earlier point, M*ffat's writing for Clara got significantly better after Twelve turned up and he had to write a more complicated relationship than "Clara thinks Eleven is cute".

Thasmin is not queerbaiting. Two queer characters falling in love but not kissing or becoming a couple is not queerbaiting. Please actually research what that word means.

I actually really like the season 19 TARDIS team of Five, Adric, Tegan and Nyssa; I know a lot of people think it's overstuffed but I like seeing the characters bounce off each other.

"Kerblam!" isn't an amazing episode but most people who criticise it online have never actually watched it; they just saw an out-of-context photo set and decided they knew what it was about.

The best writing Nyssa got in the classic show was "Legopolis" and "Arc of Infinity"; especially in the later, Sarah Sutton did a great job when she was given more to do than "being the sweet one".

Also, she was (and is) in love with Tegan and vice-versa (but that's not a hot take since they're a canon couple now XD).

I personally don't get the appeal of Four. I know they're considered the "iconic" incarnation for the classic era but I don't get it.

The way Yaz is treated by the fandom now is rather similar to how Martha was treated back in the 2000s (although Yaz doesn't have to deal with people hating her for not being Rose).

In their last scene with the ice-cream they actually did kiss and the camera just didn't show it because screw the show for not giving them a kiss

Adding on to 'Yaz's family thinking they're dating'-

Yaz's family have set up little dates for the two of them before despite Yaz adamantly denying they're a couple. 13 just enjoyed the picnic, still doesent know about what Yaz's family is saying about them.

One time 13 asked Yaz where she wanted to go and Yaz said "Uh I don't know, you pick." and 13 took this as 'where do *you* want to go'. They then spent several hours at one of those aquariums where you can pet the sea creatures.

They've at some point probably been trapped in a prison cell for some amount of time together, they ended up playing poker with rocks (don't come for me idk how poker works) and Yaz managed to convince 13 to talk about her feelings.

One time Yaz walked into a poll (like on a sidewalk) (distracted talking to 13) and 13 asked if she was okay, then proceeded to do the exact same thing.

Sometimes if 13 is walking Yaz somewhere in the TARDIS, the TARDIS will purposefully make hallways longer so Yaz and 13 can just be together for longer. (It also ships them)

One time Yaz found a ddr machine at a thrift store and brought it into the TARDIS, 13 ended up making some "upgrades" and now ddr is more like beatsaber.

13 took Yaz Ryan and Graham to a planet that was all flower fields and Graham kind of shooed himself and Ryan away cuz he knew Yaz had a crush on 13.

13 really likes jasmin flowers (and roses, those are her two favourites)

One time Yaz and 13 went to a lake that had heat cents all a cross the bottom (so the water was heated) and just swan around the whole day

Also they stopped for a picnic at one point

Yaz took 13 to a sushi place one time, they ordered spring rolls :]

One time they were in Soho and found an old bookshop, overall the seller didn't seem to want them taking home any books but it was a good experience overall

13 and Yaz will nap together sometimes :]

Yaz had nightmares and if she wakes up from one she seeks out 13

The mattress is in the control room bc yaz sleeps better around the doctor ( also so 13 can take lil power naps)

13 genuinely tries to improve herself for yaz (like being more open)

Yaz doesn’t push 13 to share but will ask questions

Yaz does not let thirteen be a douche bag to her, and will call her out

i know everyone hates 13’s era and whatever (you’re wrong but that’s not the point here) but like i’m always saying i wanted more from them. cause like i love yaz so much ofc but i wanted more of ryan and the doctor one on one. show me them sharing one brain cell and getting captured all the time only for an exasperated yaz and graham to come break them out. and more of graham and the doctor. show me more of the doctor accompanying graham on random chores when they’re home bc she doesn’t like being alone and her being enthralled by grocery shopping. and more dan omg. show me dan and the doctor getting to go on fun easy adventures and dan getting the full companion experience. and honestly more yaz too. more little “dates” they won’t admit are dates and moments together that aren’t colored by loss and battle. i’m never over 13’s era i loved it so much and i want so much more of them.

i think i prefer 13 as quite a indifferent doctor. i mean she was very aloof. i wanna actually explore that. kind of how 12 was at first, very over the whole performance of being 'the doctor' thing. but i dont mean for her to regress, i would have taken it further, made her an anti-hero. because there are shades of it in her dynamic with the fam which is fascinating. i unfortunately know it wasnt on purpose, but it feels like she had the least closeness with the fam out of all companions ever. in my version, i would have liked it to be semi on purpose, but her also to be hurt by it when graham and ryan eventually left because deep down there is some affection. to be annoyed because even her outfit is designed to be neutral. remember in 'how to get away with murder' bonnie told laurel that she shouldn't assume she's nice because she's female?

maybe 13 would have preferred grace and feels guilty. and as for yaz. sorry shippers but in my book, that story works unrequited. but i dont think it's any less valid.

i feel like 13 to me works better if she is kind of shitty. i loved in the show when yaz physically pushed her away because she was so mad. i really liked when she told the fam that she didn't understand why they were upset with her because she did all the standard pleasantries. they knew it was surface level.

i like the idea that 13 could realize even the mundanity is valid. that no one has to be exceptional to be worthy of her prescence. and even more her getting her ego wounded when ryan and graham leave, because they're not feeling it. which gets her right in the gut because people have screamed and begged to stay with the doctor. literally.

what do you think? does anyone understand what i'm saying? and jodie could have 100% pulled this off.
